House of Cards Is Dealing With Sexual Assault Allegations About Kevin Spacey

Updated Nov. 3, 2017, 9:30 a.m. PT: At least eight current and former staffers on House of Cards have come forward to anonymously accuse Kevin Spacey of years of sexual assault and harassment. Several of them were young, just beginning their entertainment careers, and described Spacey's behavior as "predatory."

One account came from a production assistant, who says he was tasked with driving Spacey to set. He alleges that while he was driving, Spacey reached over and put his hands down his pants.

"I was in a state of shock," the PA told CNN. "He was a man in a very powerful position on the show and I was someone very low on the totem pole and on the food chain there."

The same PA also alleges that when he delivered Spacey's bags to his trailer, Spacey blocked the door and assaulted him again. This was after the PA claims he told his supervisor about being sexually harassed by Spacey.

"I have no doubt that this type of predatory behavior was routine for him and that my experience was one of many and that Kevin had few if any qualms about exploiting his status and position," he added. "It was a toxic environment for young men who had to interact with him at all in the crew, cast, background actors."

Another crew member, who worked on House of Cards for all six seasons, told CNN that Spacey habitually harassed him and touched him inappropriately without consent.

House of Cards' production company has halted filming on the sixth season for now and told CNN it put in place "an anonymous complaint hotline, crisis counselors, and sexual harassment legal advisor for the crew."

Updated Nov. 1, 2017, 8:35 a.m. PT: We already knew that Netflix was ending House of Cards after its upcoming season following accusations of sexual assault made against Kevin Spacey. But now, the streaming service has gone a step further and halted production on the sixth season of the hit political drama.

"MRC and Netflix have decided to suspend production on House of Cards season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew," the company said in a statement.

How Netflix will proceed with this remains to be seen, but in the meantime, we'll just keep living for that Claire Underwood spinoff that's reportedly in the works.

Original story:

In light of alarming sexual assault allegations made against its star, Kevin Spacey, House of Cards is officially folding — Netflix made the announcement Monday that the popular series' upcoming sixth season will be its last. However, a House of Cards spinoff will take its place.

The spinoff is reportedly in the early stages of development according to Variety. Although no specific characters or storyline are attached so far, Variety confirms that the new show will take place in the same universe as the original House of Cards.

Since Netflix and Media Rights Capital decided to end House of Cards after its sixth season, possibly due to the troubling nature of Spacey's alleged actions, it's only logical that Frank Underwood will not have a role in the spinoff. That doesn't mean that his wife, Claire, would be out of the picture, though.

Spokespeople for both Netflix and Media Rights Capital declined to comment, but the internet is here for a spinoff with Robin Wright (aka Claire Underwood) at the helm.

Clearly, House of Cards fans feel the phenomenally talented Wright deserves to take over as Madam President.

Alas, there is reportedly another potential focus brewing for the spinoff — one which would revolve around Doug Stamper, the political aide who did much of Frank's dirty work in the first five seasons. Eli Roth is reportedly in talks to write the series from this particular slant.

Since the spinoff is rumored to be in such an early stage of development, it's impossible to know at this point which path producers will choose. What is certain, though, is that Spacey (and hence Frank) will not figure into the new series.

Julia Roberts Tries to Carry Her Tweens to Bed

In the December issue of InStyle, cover star Julia Roberts acknowledged that being a mother comes with a unique kind of heartbreak. Roberts, a mother of three — 10-year-old Henry and 12-year-old twins Hazel and Finn — opened up about the bittersweet experience of watching kids grow up.

More: So People's Most Beautiful Woman Julia Roberts Is 49 Years Old — Get Over It

“All the clichés are true,” she said to InStyle. “I’m so proud of them but also... I tried to carry somebody up to bed the other night, and it was just, ‘All right, you’re gonna have to get on your feet and sleepwalk because I just can’t get up the stairs.’” Pretty impressive that she even tried, though — carrying a kid who's older than, I dunno, 6 up a flight of stairs? Sounds like some badass firefighter shit to us.

This year, Roberts and husband Danny Moder celebrated their 15-year anniversary and will soon embark on another parental challenge: rearing two teenagers, since Hazel and Finn turn 13 this month. The Oscar-winning actor herself turned 50 in October. And in addition to revealing her love of birthdays — an anomaly for women in Hollywood, apparently — Roberts got real with InStyle about the one topic all reporters seemed stuck on: her life as a woman who has lived more than half a century. (*Gasp!*)

More: The Risky Decision that Could Have Cost Julia Roberts Her Career

“Really, people?” she said about everyone's obsession with her age. “Are we still in that space? Did anyone go over this with George Clooney or Brad [Pitt] before their 50th birthdays?”

Roberts is currently promoting her new film, Wonder, based on the 2012 YA novel by R.J. Palacio. The story is about a protective mother of a small boy (played by Jacob Tremblay) who's struggling socially because of an extreme facial deformity. In a nutshell, Roberts' character Isabel has to learn to let a lot go, to embrace her family's unique reality and to stop caring what other people think.

All the Celebrities Who Have Accused Harvey Weinstein of Sexual Misconduct — So Far

In early October, The New York Times published an exhaustive exposé on decadeslong sexual harassment allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. At the time, the publication detailed how the disgraced film executive had paid off at least eight women. And in the time since, even more women have come forward with shocking stories of abuse.

Weinstein's victims run the gamut from fleeting assistants to models to top Hollywood talent — all sharing a similar narrative of the ways Weinstein forced himself upon them or tried to coerce them into sexual acts.

As the story continues to unfold, another pattern emerges: that of an extremely powerful, wealthy man using his influence and means to silence any woman who would dare speak out against him. Only now, emboldened by the Times exposé, these women are coming forward.

Slowly but surely, the stories are beginning to surface with increasing frequency. Below are the accounts of all the women who were allegedly subjected to his sexually deviant behavior.

Paz de la Huerta

Former Boardwalk Empire star Paz de la Huerta is the latest to come forward with accusations against Weinstein. In an interview published on Wednesday, Nov. 1, de la Huerta told Vanity Fair Weinstein raped her on two separate occasions.

The first time, she alleges, happened when Weinstein offered her a ride home in New York and then demanded to come into her apartment for a drink.

"Things got very uncomfortable very fast," she said. "Immediately when we got inside the house, he started to kiss me and I kind of brushed [him] away. Then he pushed me into the bed and his pants were down and he lifted up my skirt. I felt afraid… It wasn’t consensual… It happened very quickly… He stuck himself inside me… When he was done he said he’d be calling me. I kind of just laid on the bed in shock."

On the second occasion, de la Huerta alleges Weinstein waited for her outside a photo shoot after he had been calling her "incessantly" even though she begged him to leave her alone. She says she had been drinking that time, and that Weinstein again bullied his way into her apartment.

"I was in no state. I was so terrified of him," she explained. "When he was on top of me I said, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ He kept humping me and it was disgusting. He’s like a pig… He raped me."

NYPD detective Nicholas DiGaudio told Vanity Fair de la Huerta is one of the people he has interviewed in his investigation of Weinstein.

"I believe based on my interviews with Paz that from the N.Y.P.D. standpoint we have enough to make an arrest," he told the magazine.

Finally some good news.

Dominique Huett

On Tuesday Oct. 24, actor and model Dominique Huett came forward to allege that in November 2010, Weinstein brought her to a room at the Beverly Hills Hotel where he forcibly performed oral sex on her without her consent. Huett alleges Weinstein, operating in a manner extremely similar to other women's stories, moved the conversation from her career to Weinstein, asking if she could give him a massage. When she declined, Huett says Weinstein was persistent and eventually he wore her down.

Weinstein then allegedly began to suggest he perform oral sex on Huett. In a lawsuit being filed by Huett against The Weinstein Company, the following details are included: "Weinstein displayed persistence and would not take ‘no’ for an answer. Weinstein initiated and Plaintiff froze as Weinstein removed her clothing and performed oral sex on her. Weinstein performed oral sex on Plaintiff for several minutes. After performing oral sex on Plaintiff, Weinstein masturbated in front of Plaintiff until he reached orgasm."

According to Refinery29's report, Huett's lawyers are also pushing to have Huett's lawsuit allowed in court despite falling outside the statute of limitations because they claim she was not made aware of The Weinstein Company's complicity until last month.

Lupita Nyong'o

In an op-ed written for The New York Times, Lupita Nyong'o started by explaining that she too had been part of the "conspiracy of silence." It wasn't until she saw so many women coming forward that Nyong'o stopped blaming herself and realized her own encounter with Weinstein was "a sinister pattern of behavior" on the movie mogul's part.

"I met Harvey Weinstein in 2011 at an awards ceremony in Berlin, while I was still a student at the Yale School of Drama. An intermediary introduced him to me as 'the most powerful producer in Hollywood.' As an aspiring actress, I was of course eager to meet people in the industry but cautious about strangers, and the intentions of men in general. So I tried to vet this famous producer by asking my dinner-table companions what they knew of him. A woman who was a producer herself cautiously advised me to 'keep Harvey in your corner.' She said: 'He is a good man to know in the business, but just be careful around him. He can be a bully.' And so I exchanged contacts with him in the hopes that I would be considered for one of his projects," wrote Nyong'o.

However, upon arriving at Weinstein's home for a movie screening, things took a decidedly insidious turn. About 15 minutes into the film, Weinstein told Nyong'o he wanted to show her something.

"Harvey led me into a bedroom — his bedroom — and announced that he wanted to give me a massage," Nyong'o recounted. "I thought he was joking at first. He was not. For the first time since I met him, I felt unsafe. I panicked a little and thought quickly to offer to give him one instead: It would allow me to be in control physically, to know exactly where his hands were at all times."

She continued, "I began to massage his back to buy myself time to figure out how to extricate myself from this undesirable situation. Before long, he said he wanted to take off his pants. I told him not to do that and informed him that it would make me extremely uncomfortable." When he started to take his pants off anyway, Nyong'o moved for the door and managed to leave. His kids were in the next room the entire time.

A few months later, Weinstein would proposition Nyong'o in a restaurant, telling her that she had to do certain things if she hoped to have any career. She refused, and a few years later rejected Weinstein's repeated requests to have her star in one of his films.

Ashley Judd

The Times exposé opened with a powerful story about Ashley Judd when, two decades ago, she was allegedly invited to Weinstein's Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel room. A young actor at the time, she assumed it was for a business breakfast meeting. However, when she arrived, she claims she found Weinstein waiting in a bathrobe. He asked her for a massage or if she could watch him shower. "How do I get out of the room as fast as possible without alienating Harvey Weinstein?" Judd told the Times she remembers thinking.

For Variety's Women in Power Issue in 2015, Judd previously shared the story of her encounter, albeit without mentioning Weinstein by name. In detail, the actor described how one of the industry's most famous movie moguls had lured her into his hotel room and made sexual advances on her. At the time, she told Variety, "This will be familiar to all the women to whom this has happened. I have a feeling we are a legion."

Rose McGowan

The Times piece also identified Rose McGowan, who starred in the Weinstein-distributed 1996 film Scream, as a victim. A legal document reviewed by the Times revealed that the then-23-year-old actor had reached a $100,000 settlement with Weinstein over an incident in a hotel room during the Sundance Film Festival. The legal document reportedly underscored that it was "not to be construed as an admission" by Weinstein but intended to "avoid litigation and buy peace."

In October of 2016, McGowan alluded to her abuse, tweeting, "Because my ex sold our movie to my rapist for distribution #WhyWomenDontReport." Although McGowan doesn't specifically reference Weinstein by name, her film Planet Terror was distributed by Weinstein in 2007. And at the time she made the movie, she was dating filmmaker Robert Rodriguez.

In a Twitter thread directed at Amazon and its CEO, Jeff Bezos, on Oct. 13, McGowan finally publicly named Weinstein as her rapist.

"I told the head of your studio that HW raped me. Over & over I said it. He said it hadn’t been proven. I said I was the proof," she wrote. "I had already sold a script I wrote to your studio, it was in development. When I heard a Weinstein bailout was in the works I forcefully begged studio head to do the right thing. I was ignored. Deal was done. Amazon won a dirty Oscar."

McGowan, who has for years been vocal about the problems in the industry, has become the voice of the Weinstein resistance since the Times piece went live. In addition to calling for the dissolution of The Weinstein Company's entire board for what she says is its complicity in covering up Weinstein's behavior, McGowan continues to bring to light her story as well as the stories of other women who were victimized by Weinstein.

Asia Argento

In an investigative piece by Ronan Farrow, the son of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen, Italian actor and director Asia Argento revealed that Weinstein forced oral sex on her. At the time, she was working on the film B. Monkey, which was released in 1999 in the U.S. by Miramax. She was 21 and a rising actor when she was invited to what she was led to believe was a Miramax party at Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc on the French Riviera. However, when she arrived, there was no party — just Weinstein. At one point, Weinstein left the room and returned in a bathrobe with a bottle of lotion, asking Argento for a massage. At first, she resisted, she said, but eventually reluctantly agreed. It was then that Weinstein allegedly pushed her skirt up, forced her legs apart and performed oral sex on her as she pleaded for him to stop.

On Twitter this week, Argento shared a clip of a film she directed in 1999 that mirrored her experience with Weinstein. Also supporting her story is Argento's boyfriend, Anthony Bourdain, who is currently dragging Weinstein and anyone complicit in Weinstein's history of harassment/assault.

Mira Sorvino

Mira Sorvino, who starred in multiple Weinstein films, told Farrow that she also found herself alone in a hotel room with Weinstein during her early career. The year was 1995 during the Toronto International Film Festival. They were there to promote the film Mighty Aphrodite when Weinstein invited Sorvino to his room, presumably to discuss the film. "He started massaging my shoulders, which made me very uncomfortable, and then tried to get more physical, sort of chasing me around," she said.

Sorvino managed to get out of the room that night, but weeks later, Weinstein called her back in NYC to request another meeting. After calling a friend to come over and pose as her boyfriend, Sorvino “freaked out” when Weinstein arrived at her apartment earlier than expected. “I opened the door terrified, brandishing my twenty-pound Chihuahua mix in front of me, as though that would do any good," she said. When she explained to Weinstein her boyfriend was on his way over, the film exec angrily left.

Emma de Caunes

French actor Emma de Caunes met Weinstein in 2010 at a party during Cannes Film Festival. Months later, he reached out to her about meeting in Paris under the guise of needing a strong female lead for a film he was producing. Weinstein claimed the movie was an adaptation of a book, but he couldn't remember the title. "But I'll give it to you. I have it in my room," he reportedly told de Caunes.

Once in the room, de Caunes took a phone call, at which point Weinstein disappeared into the bathroom. Moments later, he walked out naked and with an erection. He then allegedly told de Caunes to lie on the bed and told her that "many other women had done so before her." De Caunes told Farrow she was petrified but afraid to show it. "It was like a hunter with a wild animal. The fear turns him on." She immediately left.

Rosanna Arquette

Rosanna Arquette agreed to meet up with Weinstein in the early '90s to pick up a script for a new film. When Arquette arrived at the room, Weinstein allegedly answered the door in a white bathrobe. He said his neck was sore and asked for a massage. When Arquette told him she could refer a good masseuse, the movie mogul forced her hand onto his neck. When she jerked away, he then tried to place it on his penis, which was reportedly visible and erect. "My heart was really racing. I was in a fight-or-flight moment," she told Farrow for The New Yorker. After telling Weinstein she would never do that, the film exec told her she was making a huge mistake by rejecting him. And, says Arquette, "He made things very difficult for me for years."

Angelina Jolie

During the '90s when Angelina Jolie was working on the film Playing by Heart, she endured an encounter with Weinstein during which he allegedly made unwanted advances on her in a hotel room. "I had a bad experience with Harvey Weinstein in my youth, and as a result, chose to never work with him again and warn others when they did," she told the Times in an email. "This behavior toward women in any field, any country is unacceptable."

Ambra Battilana Gutierrez

One of the most recent victims to come forward, Ambra Battilana Gutierrez — a Miss Italy contestant finalist — met Weinstein in 2015 at the reception for a show he was producing at Radio City Music Hall. Gutierrez, 22, recalled to Farrow that Weinstein repeatedly remarked how much she looked like actor Mila Kunis. He soon after requested a meeting, to which Gutierrez brought her modeling portfolio under the assumption it would be a business meeting. But shortly into the meeting, Weinstein asked if Gutierrez's breasts were real before lunging at and groping them. He also tried to force his hand up her skirt, says Gutierrez. When she continued to protest, Weinstein backed off, gave her tickets to his Broadway production of Finding Neverland and told her he'd meet her there that night.

Instead, Gutierrez went to the NYPD and reported the assault. When she failed to appear at the show, an irate Weinstein called her. The police saw an opportunity, convincing Gutierrez to wear a wire and meet up with the movie mogul. The tapes, which have now been released, reveal a tense conversation during which Weinstein admits to groping the young model.

Jessica Barth

Actor Jessica Barth (Next, Ted, Ted 2) told Farrow she met Weinstein at a Golden Globes party in 2011. When the movie exec asked Barth to meet him at the Peninsula, she agreed. When she arrived, though, she was asked to come to his room. At the time, Weinstein assured her it was "no big deal" and that he just wanted privacy to "talk career stuff." In the room, Barth claims she discovered Weinstein with a bottle of Champagne and sushi. He then reportedly proceeded to alternate between offering her movie roles and sexually harassing her. "'So, what would happen if, say, we're having some champagne and I take my clothes off and you give me a massage?'" Barth recounted Weinstein asking. "And I'm like, 'That's not going to happen.'"

When Barth got up to leave, Weinstein reacted harshly, telling her out of spite that she need to lose weight to "compete with Mila Kunis." Barth told Farrow she burst into tears upon leaving, but that she did share the harrowing experience with two people — whom Farrow contacted and who corroborated Barth's account.

Gwyneth Paltrow

When Gwyneth Paltrow was 22, she was cast to play the lead in the movie adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. Because the film was being produced by Weinstein, the young actor didn't find it out of the ordinary when he requested a meeting at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel. And while it began innocently enough, Paltrow told the Times it ended with Weinstein making unwanted sexual advances — including touching her and suggesting they give each other massages in the bedroom. "I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified," Paltrow revealed. Although she refused Weinstein's advances, she admitted, "I thought he was going to fire me."

More: Gwyneth Paltrow & Angelina Jolie Tell Their Harvey Weinstein Stories

Paltrow also divulged that she told her then-boyfriend, Brad Pitt, about the exchange. Pitt then reportedly confronted Weinstein at a movie premiere, telling him that he wouldn't do anything like that to Paltrow again... or else (else, in this case, was reportedly a "Missouri whooping"). A representative of Pitt's has since confirmed this narrative of events to the Times.

Romola Garai

British actor Romola Garai (Vanity Fair, Atonement, Suffragette) was only 18 when Weinstein called her in for an "audition" that ultimately proved to be much more sinister in nature. "Like every other woman in the industry, I've had an 'audition' with Harvey Weinstein, where I'd actually already had the audition but you had to be personally approved by him," she told The Guardian. "So I had to go to his hotel room in the Savoy, and he answered the door in his bathrobe. I was only 18. I felt violated by it, it has stayed very clearly in my memory."

Katherine Kendall

In 1993, when Swingers' Katherine Kendall was 23, Weinstein set up a meeting with the young actor through her agent. After sending her several scripts, he invited Kendall to a screening in a cinema near Lincoln Center in Manhattan. And after the screening, he said he needed to drop by his apartment to pick something up, Kendall told the Times. Once in the apartment, it wasn't long before Weinstein went into the bathroom and allegedly emerged wearing only a robe and asking for a massage. "'Everybody does it,'" Weinstein said, according to Kendall. Her refusal only seemed to excite Weinstein more, as he left the room and returned in the nude. "He literally chased me," she said. "He wouldn't let me pass him to get to the door."

Heather Graham

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Heather Graham recalled her own disturbing experience with Weinstein in the early 2000s. It started when Weinstein invited the star into his office to discuss a pile of potential scripts. While that seemed straightforward enough, Weinstein then pivoted the conversation problematically.

"Later in the conversation, he mentioned that he had an agreement with his wife. He could sleep with whomever he wanted when he was out of town," Graham told Variety. "I walked out of the meeting feeling uneasy. There was no explicit mention that to star in one of those films I had to sleep with him, but the subtext was there."

Cara Delevingne

In a lengthy Instagram post on Oct. 11, Delevingne detailed a pair of uncomfortable interactions she had had with Weinstein early in her career.

"When I first started to work as an actress, i was working on a film and I received a call from‎ Harvey Weinstein asking if I had slept with any of the women I was seen out with in the media. It was a very odd and uncomfortable call," she wrote. "I answered none of his questions and hurried off the phone but before I hung up, he said to me that If I was gay or decided to be with a woman especially in public that I'd never get the role of a straight woman or make it as an actress in Hollywood."

Cara Delevingne instagram about Harvey Weinstein

Cara Delevingne instagram about Harvey Weinstein

The second interaction Delevingne recounts is even more harrowing.

"A year or two later, I went to a meeting with him in the lobby of a hotel with a director about an upcoming film," she wrote. "The director left the meeting and Harvey asked me to stay and chat with him. As soon as we were alone he began to brag about all the actresses he had slept with and how he had made their careers and spoke about other inappropriate things of a sexual nature."

Delevingne continued, "He then invited me to his room. I quickly declined and asked his assistant if my car was outside. She said it wasn't and wouldn't be for a bit and I should go to his room. At that moment I felt very powerless and scared but didn't want to act that way hoping that I was wrong about the situation."

When Delevingne arrived in Weinstein's hotel room, she said another woman was there, and she immediately felt safer. But that didn't last.

"He asked us to kiss and she began some sort of advances upon his direction," she wrote. "I swiftly got up and asked him if he knew that I could sing. And I began to sing....I thought it would make the situation better....more professional....like an audition....I was so nervous. After singing I said again that I had to leave. He walked me to the door and stood in front of it and tried to kiss me on the lips. I stopped him and managed to get out of the room."

Delevingne said Weinstein still offered her a part in the movie he was casting, but that she always felt like he may have only given it to her because of that encounter in his hotel room.

"I was so hesitant about speaking out," she wrote. "I didn't want to hurt his family. I felt guilty as if I did something wrong. I was also terrified that this sort of thing had happened to so many women I know but no one had said anything because of fear."

Léa Seydoux

Léa Seydoux — known for her roles in Blue Is the Warmest Color and Spectre — come forward claiming Harvey Weinstein sexually attacked her.

In an op-ed for the Guardian, Seydoux (who worked with Weinstein on Inglourious Basterds) said she met Weinstein and his female assistant in the lobby of a hotel. "All throughout the evening, he flirted and stared at me as if I was a piece of meat," she explained. "He acted as if he were considering me for a role. But I knew that was bullshit. I knew it because I could see it in his eyes. He had a lecherous look. He was using his power to get sex."

But things escalated when his assistant left. "We were talking on the sofa when he suddenly jumped on me and tried to kiss me. I had to defend myself," she said. "He’s big and fat, so I had to be forceful to resist him. I left his room, thoroughly disgusted. I wasn’t afraid of him, though. Because I knew what kind of man he was all along."

Kate Beckinsale

kate beckinsale weinstein instagram

The Underworld star came forward on Thursday with her own personal account of what she says happened between her and Weinstein when she was just 17 years old — which would make Beckinsale one of Weinstein's youngest alleged victims to come forward. In an extensive Instagram caption, with a picture presumably taken around the time this alleged incident occurred, Beckinsale bravely detailed her side of the story.

"I was called to meet Harvey Weinstein at the Savoy Hotel when I was 17. I assumed it would be in a conference room which was very common. When I arrived, reception told me to go to his room. He opened the door in his bathrobe. I was incredibly naive and young and it did not cross my mind that this older, unattractive man would expect me to have any sexual interest in him. After declining alcohol and announcing that I had school in the morning I left, uneasy but unscathed. A few years later he asked me if he had tried anything with me in that first meeting. I realized he couldn't remember if he had assaulted me or not. I had what I thought were boundaries - I said no to him professionally many times over the years some of which ended up with him screaming at me calling me a cunt and making threats, some of which made him laughingly tell people oh 'Kate lives to say no to me.' It speaks to the status quo in this business that I was aware that standing up for myself and saying no to things, while it did allow me to feel uncompromised in myself, undoubtedly harmed my career and was never something I felt supported by anyone other than my family. I would like to applaud the women who have come forward, and to pledge that we can from this create a new paradigm where producers, managers, executives and assistants and everyone who has in the past shrugged and said 'well, that's just Harvey /Mr. X/insert name here' will realize that we in numbers can affect real change. For every moment like this, there have been thousands where a vulnerable person has confided outrageous unprofessional behavior and found they have no recourse, due to an atmosphere of fear that it seems almost everyone has been living in. I had a male friend who, based on my experience, warned a young actress who said she was going to dinner with Harvey to be careful. He received a phone call the next day saying he would never work in anothermax film; the girl was already sleeping with Harvey and had told him that my friend had warned her off. Let's stop allowing our young women to be sexual cannon fodder, and let's remember that Harvey is an emblem of a system that is sick and that we have work to do."

Claire Forlani

Yet another woman has accused Harvey Weinstein of attempted sexual assault. This time, Claire Forlani, star of Mallrats and Meet Joe Black, tweeted accounts of escaping from Weinstein multiple times as a young actor.

"You see, nothing happened to me with Harvey — by that I mean, I escaped 5 times," she wrote. "I had two Peninsula Hotel meetings in the evening with Harvey and all I remember was I ducked, dived and ultimately got out of there without getting slobbered over, well just a bit. Yes, massage was suggested. The three dinners with Harvey I don’t really remember the time period, I was 25. I remember him telling me all the actresses who had slept with him and what he had done for them. I wasn’t drinking the cool aid [sic], I knew Harvey was a master manipulator."

She also wrote about her reluctance to speak out even though she was "in awe" of women who did because she knew those who sought justice would be ostracized.

"For us it was something you weren't supposed to make a big deal out of; it was sadly our normal," she wrote.

Now, she's hopeful that the days of Hollywood being overrun with sexism and harassment could be coming to an end.

"I feel excited, I really do, that this could be a thing of the past, that these men will now not feel they have carte blanche to intimidate, sexualize, bully and ultimately hurt women or girls," she wrote. "I'm not naïve enough to believe it can be eradicated but it can be a different time and that after all this pain, suffering and fear, it can be a new time in this business. I am proud of my community. I love what I do. There are so many beautiful people in this business. So may the bad seeds please leave the stage?"

Minka Kelly

Actress Minka Kelly, best known for her roles in Friday Night Lights and Weinstein Co.'s film The Butler, posted a lengthy Instagram post about a time Harvey Weinstein propositioned her.

As detailed in the post, Kelly explains that she met Weinstein at an industry party; the next day, her agent informed her that he wanted to set up a general interview in his hotel room. Feeling uncomfortable with that, she agreed to meet Weinstein and his assistant at a hotel restaurant instead. Upon arriving, Weinstein showered her with potential movie roles and then, as many other of his accusers have said, dismissed his assistant. That's when Weinstein allegedly promised Kelly a "lavish lifestyle" with strings attached.

"He said, 'I know you were feeling what I was feeling when we met the other night,' and then regaled me with offers of a lavish life filled with trips around the world on private planes etc. IF I would be his girlfriend," Kelly wrote. "Or, 'We could just keep this professional.'"

Kelly "gracefully" shut him down, telling him she was flattered, and they decided to keep their relationship professional. Weinstein asked her not to tell anyone about their exchange but she immediately called her agent and told her everything. They shared a laugh at his audacity, but now Kelly's apologizing for not doing more.

"I'm sorry for obliging his orders to be complicit in protecting his behavior, which he obviously knew was wrong or he wouldn’t have asked me not to tell anyone in the first place. For making him feel ok about the gross things he was saying and that I felt my only route was to say I was flattered. For not insisting that my reps never allow anyone to take a meeting in a hotel room (with him or anyone else), because I honestly don’t know what might have happened if I’d just showed up as originally scheduled."

Eva Green

After her mother revealed her to be one of Weinstein's victim's, Green released a statement detailing a time Weinstein made an aggressive advance and she was forced to "push him off."

"I met him for a business meeting in Paris at which he behaved inappropriately and I had to push him off. I got away without it going further, but the experience left me shocked and disgusted," she wrote. "I have not discussed this before because I wanted to maintain my privacy, but I understand it is important to do so as I hear about other women’s experiences. Women are often condemned when they speak out and their personal reputations tarnished by association."

Green continued, "I salute the great bravery of the women who have come forward. We should recognise that this sort of behaviour exists everywhere and is not unique to the entertainment industry. The exploitation of power is ubiquitous. This behaviour is unacceptable and needs to be eliminated."

Angie Everhart

In a live video interview with TMZ, Everhart told about a time Weinstein trapped her in a room and masturbated in front of her. Unlike so many women, Everhart did not keep quiet, but when she told others about what had happened, she said most of them replied, "Oh, that's just Harvey."

TMZ reporters asked, "So they literally passed it off as 'We know he does that'?"

Everhart just said, "Yeah."

She also spoke about how Weinstein's predatory behavior has been by no means a secret. "People have known this about Harvey for more than a decade... There isn't a single person who is anybody in this business that doesn't know that Harvey Weinstein has been like that. If they know Harvey, they know he's been like that," she said. But, she added, women don't come forward with their personal stories for fear of hurting their careers. "It's a very scary thing in Hollywood to come out and talk like this about somebody who is so powerful as Harvey Weinstein. He got stories crushed, and he can crush you. Even when I said it that night, nobody cared."

Lena Headey

In a series of gut-wrenching tweets posted on Tuesday, Oct. 17, Game of Thrones actor Lena Headey described the two very horrible encounters she had with Weinstein. In the first encounter (edited according to Entertainment Weekly’s report for clarity and brevity), she states: "The first time I met Harvey Weinstein was at The Venice Film Festival. The Brothers Grimm was showing there, (during shooting I was subjected to endless bullying by the director Terry Gilliam). At one point Harvey asked me to take a walk down to the water, I walked down with him and he stopped and made some suggestive comment, a gesture, I just laughed it off, I was genuinely shocked. I remember thinking, ‘It’s got to be a joke.’ I said something like, ‘Oh come on mate?! It’d be like kissing my dad! Let’s go get a drink, get back to the others.’ I was never in any other Miramax film.”

She continued, detailing the second encounter with him.

The list continues to grow

Just over the weekend, nearly two dozen more women came forward with their own stories of abuse at Weinstein's hands. Several of them were young models and actors who spoke out about their experiences and saw their careers stall or end because of it. Women who have spoken out include:

  • Alice Evans
  • Tara Subkoff
  • Louisette Geiss
  • Tomi-Ann Roberts
  • Judith Godrèche
  • Dawn Dunning
  • Lucia Evans
  • Laura Madden
  • Lauren Sivan
  • Emily Nestor
  • Zoe Brock
  • Louise Godbold
  • Liza Campbell
  • Romola Garai
  • Florence Darel
  • Sophie Dix
  • Lysette Anthony

Many of their stories can be found in The New York Times, as it continues to compile the accounts of women who were harassed or attacked by Weinstein.

Mom Says She'll Continue Breastfeeding 5-Year-Old Despite Internet Ire

British blogger Sophie Mei Lan is the mother of two girls (Jasmine, 5, and Ariana, 2), both of whom she's still breastfeeding. That last fact — nursing a 5-year-old — has been the source of much controversy from haters online simply because it raises the age-old question: How old is too old for a kid to be breastfed?

More: My Kid Won't Drink My Pumped Breast Milk — but Someone Else's Baby Does

In a recent interview with the U.K. daytime program This Morning, Mei Lan explained how breastfeeding benefits not only her children, but herself. “[W]hen I’m feeding my babies, it anchors me and I focus on them,” she said, as noted by Us Weekly. Mei Lan has openly discussed her struggle with depression on Instagram and on her blog.

Breastfeeding Mom

Breastfeeding Mom

The mom hasn’t shied away from sharing images of herself breastfeeding her children online. This too often garners a mix of support of and criticism. After her television appearance, Twitter erupted with a slew of comments, largely criticizing the mother of two. Poor thing. At least it seems like Mei Lan is able to shrug the comments off. Except, that is, for the one opinion she has been concerned about: that of her husband, Chris Hale.

More: Breaking Up With Breastfeeding

“It’s caused a bit of friction in my relationship. Chris would like me to stop because it’s so tiring,” Mei Lan told The Sun on Thursday. “We do argue about it, but we know breast milk is one of the healthiest things we can give our children.”

At least it seems like Hale is simply concerned with the physical effects of breastfeeding two large, hungry children — rather than shaming his wife for an entirely personal choice that some people simply see as "inappropriate" for whatever reason. “My take on it: I feel sorry for mothers,” he said on This Morning. “They are always judged. It’s almost a battle you can’t win. You do what is right for your family. It doesn’t really matter what everyone else thinks.”

Our take on it: You do you, Sophie. This is nobody's decision to make but yours — and it's certainly not a decision that anonymous internet commenters who don't even know you should be making for you.

How to Manage Decreased Libido While on Antidepressants

For some people with depression, antidepressants can be lifesaving. The most common forms used to treat anxiety and depression are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. SSRIs are known to impact all four stages of the sexual arousal cycle, including desire, arousal, orgasm and resolution, impacting up to 60 percent of patients. It might seem like your sex drive will be collateral damage in the pursuit of better mental health, but it doesn’t have to be. There are several ways you can up your libido after SSRIs kick in.

If you want to take antidepressants without impacting your sex drive, there are drug alternatives that may be right for you. Wellbutrin, a brand name for bupropion, for instance, is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor that has many of the same side effects as SSRIs, but may not affect the sexual arousal cycle and can even increase your libido.

The drug can be taken as a standalone antidepressant or in addition to an SSRI. If you are prone to seizures or have an eating disorder, doctors say you should not take Wellbutrin.

More: 8 Facts about your libido that will help you improve your sex life

“Bupropion is known to reduce seizure thresholds, with a seizure rate of about 1 in 1000 subjects treated,” writes Dr. Eric Wooltorton, an Ottawa-based general practitioner. He continues,  “[Bupropion] should not be administered to patients with conditions altering the seizure threshold, including anorexia nervosa or bulimia.”

If switching to Wellbutrin is not an option and a low libido is getting you down, you may want to consider lowering your dosage. Dr. Robert L. Phillips, a family physician and the vice president of research and policy at the American Board of Family Medicine, writes that in “one study, 73 percent of patients whose SSRI dosage was halved reported improved sexual function while antidepressant effectiveness continued.”

Phillips also notes that people with “major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder have an even higher prevalence of sexual dysfunction” than the general population. The explanation behind this is that sexual dysfunction is a symptom of depression and will impact your libido regardless of whether or not you are taking medication. As a result, treating your depression first can positively impact your sex drive.

Norman L. Keltner, a professor at the School of Nursing at the University of Alabama, writes, “[P]atients can plan activities when drug levels are their lowest […] [such as] right before the next dose is scheduled to be taken.” Patients taking drugs with short half-lives, such as sertraline and clomipramine may find this method the most effective.

While some physicians may advocate a drug holiday — a brief period in which antidepressant users abstain from taking their medication for improved sexual function — Dr. Agnes Higgins, a professor at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Trinity College in Dublin, warns against it.

Higgins warns that those considering a drug holiday should keep in mind they may experience “withdrawal symptoms associated with their particular medication [that] […] may render the individual unable to engage in sexual activity.”

An important thing to note is that while sex drives may be lower than usual, it’s still possible to get aroused and orgasm. Foreplay can be an integral part of sexual satisfaction and one that should never be missed.

The bottom line: Take some pressure off yourself by keeping in mind that depression and sexual dysfunction are usually correlated and treatable.

Alec Baldwin Admits to Sexist Behavior While Publicly Acting Like a Good Guy

Alec Baldwin just owned up to treating women poorly throughout his career, and honestly? We're not sure how to feel about it.

More: Alec Baldwin Is the Latest Celeb Who May or May Not Run for President

While receiving a career honor from the Paley Center for Media on Thursday, Baldwin told reporters, "I certainly have treated women in a very sexist way. I’ve bullied women. I’ve overlooked women. I’ve underestimated women. Not as a rule, [but] from time to time I’ve done what a lot of men do, which is... when you don’t treat women the same way you treat men. You don’t. I’m from a generation where you really don’t and I’d like that to change. I really would like that to change."

Baldwin's comments come on the heels of accusations of widespread sexual harassment, assault and even rape made against other prominent men in Hollywood. Several of the film industry's most powerful men have seen their careers come crashing down in recent weeks, including Harvey Weinstein, actor Kevin Spacey and directors Brett Ratner and James Toback.

Baldwin didn't outright admit to any sexual harassment or assault, only sexist behaviors. And immediately after calling for change in the industry, he admitted that he knew about the reputations these men had and never did anything about it. Like so many men, he stood by, silently complicit.

"I knew of certain things that there were rumors of things happening to people, but I didn’t necessarily know the scope when you hear the hundreds and hundreds of women who are complaining about this," he said. "In all the time I’ve known Jimmy [Toback], I never had one conversation about his sex life, which is not unusual for me because I’m not sitting down with some guy and he’s saying to me, ‘Man, you should have seen what I did last night with this girl in this hotel.’ I don’t go there."

He continued, "I’d always heard Jimmy [Toback] was peculiar. I remember years ago, with [the movie] The Pick-up Artist, Jimmy had this reputation 20, 25 years ago or more of hitting on [women], going up and saying provocative things to them. I’d heard of that. But in my time with Jimmy, it was absolutely, positively business."

The problem with Baldwin's comments is that he's clearly trying to look like the good guy by coming clean without being publicly accused of misconduct. But he's actually admitting to the complicity that has allowed this abuse of women to continue, unchecked, for as long as the entertainment industry has existed. If Baldwin really wants to see change, we need more from him than empty words.

Hilaria & Alec Baldwin Are Expecting Their 4th Child

Updated Nov. 3, 2017, 11:45 a.m. ET: Well, in case anyone doubted Hilaria Baldwin's level of seriousness when she said she wanted a fourth baby with husband Alec Baldwin right after she] delivers, here you go: Baldwin is now pregnant with said fourth baby. This is a woman who knows what she wants and makes it happen, folks.

Baldwin posted the happy news on Instagram today, writing "Our Baldwinitos are getting a new teammate this spring." Said Baldwinitos include Carmen, 4, Rafael, 2, and Leonardo, 1. That's right: three very tiny tots. And it's worth noting that Carmen only turned 4 this past August, so by the time the newest addition arrives, the Baldwins will indeed have four kids ages 4 and under. Wowza.

Baldwin's post also teased a potential reveal of the baby's sex as soon as tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Original Story:

Hilaria and Alec Baldwin already have three (very) little ones together — all still under the age of 4. But Hilaria, a fitness and yoga expert, told Access Hollywood on Wednesday she is totally down for another kid. Like, yesterday.

She said in the interview, “Yes! I would totally do one more... for some reason, right after I deliver a baby, I want another one. It’s kind of, I feel like it’s like going down this, like, crazy slide, and then you’re like, ‘I wanna go again.’ 'Cause it’s just so invigorating, and I had great experiences.” Hilaria, you are hilarious. It's OK to take a moment to gather your procreative thoughts. Breathe.

Baldwin really makes childbirth sound like a fun ride at Six Flags, right? She seems like one of those peppy, endlessly cheerful, naturally caffeinated types — which probably goes a long way when you're hauling three toddlers from 4 a.m. to midnight. Still, we hope she gets her doctor's approval before hopping on the, er, "crazy slide" again. Go easy on that uterus, girl. Maybe take a nap before you make any rash decisions.

But it seems like she's made up her mind based on the interview. “It’s definitely something we would consider doing again. One more time!" she gushed. "But, like, imagine if it were twins! Oh, my God. Or triplets? No, that would not happen. Doesn’t run in our family.”

Watch out, Hilaria. Saying you're not going to have triplets is a surefire way to get the procreation gods laughing at you and sending you just that. Baldwin triplets?? Come on. You just invoked the universe's frat boy sense of humor, Hilaria.

Married since 2012, the Baldwins share Carmen Gabriela, 4, Rafael Thomas, 2, and Leonardo Angel. Alec Baldwin also has daughter, Ireland, 21, with Kim Basinger, who is currently somewhere on this planet sipping a dry martini and trying not to smirk at this latest Baldwin baby news.

Hilaria's enthusiasm for childbirth is matched only by her fever-pitch excitement for coordinating family Halloween costumes. “Last year, we did The Incredibles, and this year, we have a whole new thing,” she said in the interview. “I’m not gonna tell you what it is. But I am so excited about it!”

We hope Alec is as jazzed about Halloween — and/or a fourth baby — as his wife is. Somehow it seems like he might be a tough sell on both, but what do we know?

Names from history

Yep, Thanksgiving is a fraught holiday based on a violent history that many simply choose not to celebrate, with good reason. But it's worth remembering that in all the dark times throughout American history (hi, 2017), there have been some shining lights too. Below are a few names inspired by Americans we can all be grateful for.

Sarah: Sarah Josepha Hale was not only a prolific writer and editor, but she spent much of her life crusading for more educational opportunities for girls and women — and she also pushed for a national Thanksgiving holiday. She wrote a letter to Abraham Lincoln urging him to create the holiday, and he did.

Abraham: Abraham Lincoln announced an official Thanksgiving holiday to take place on November 26, 1863.

Franklin: In 1939, Franklin Roosevelt moved the official Thanksgiving holiday to the third Thursday in November, but a few years later agreed to reset it permanently to the fourth Thursday.

Truman: While historical experts dispute the notion that Harry S. Truman was the first president to pardon a turkey, the myth lives on. And Truman is a great name anyway, so it could be a great choice for a Thanksgiving — or any day — baby.

So if your bundle of joy arrives on or near this coming Thanksgiving, maybe steer clear of naming her "Casserole" and embrace one of these names inspired by the holiday instead.

CMAs Host Brad Paisley Calls Out Award Show Restrictions About Gun Control

Brad Paisley wasn't afraid to speak his piece early on Friday when it came to the upcoming 2017 Country Music Awards and the show's press guidelines. The country music singer was among many who felt that the recently issued (and now rescinded) guidelines on whether the press can discuss anything related to guns or gun control at the CMAs were too restrictive.

More: Why Is Country Music So Lit for Brad Paisley?

When the guidelines were first reported, the one that caught Paisley's attention (as reported by E! News) stated that the "Las Vegas tragedy, gun rights, political affiliations or topics of the like" would be out of bounds for the press. It's understandable that the show's organizers would have this impulse, probably from a desire to keep the tone of the evening's proceedings as light and easygoing as possible.

However, when that news first got out, Paisley immediately aired his feelings on the matter. "I'm sure the CMA will do the right thing and rescind these ridiculous and unfair press guidelines. In 3...2....1.....," he wrote on Friday morning.

Brad Paisley CMA 2017 Tweet

The tweet must have caught the attention of the CMAs' organizers — perhaps due in part to Paisley's role as co-host of this year's show — as well as outcries from other folks. Within hours, the restriction was lifted.

In response, Paisley tweeted, "Bravo CMA awards for doing the right thing & apologizing for this mistake. All are welcome, let's have a great show." An easy ending to a somewhat tense morning — but it does send a strong message to everyone watching, attending and participating in the 2017 CMAs.

Paisley's feelings could suggest that there are many in the country music community who are open to discussing gun control and gun violence in America. Following the Las Vegas terror attack, where attendees of a country music concert were specifically targeted, it's understandable that a focus on the events and the community at large would come up again at the CMAs.

It's good to see Paisley speaking up and making sure we can have an honest discussion about tough subjects, even if it feels like the timing or venue may not be quite right. Of course, we do hope the CMAs are a fun event. But if the topic of gun control does come up, then it's good to know we can talk about it.

A Fertility Crisis Is Happening Right Now in Flint, Michigan

$

There are fewer babies being born in Flint, Michigan — and that's no coincidence. Recently, Mother Jones reported that residents experienced fewer pregnancies and higher fetal deaths, including miscarriages, since April 2014. A working paper by Kansas University economics professor David Slusky and West Virginia University economics professor Daniel Grossman studied health statistics in Flint over the past decade and compared them to 15 other cities in Michigan. The report revealed fertility rates dropped 12 percent and fetal deaths increased by 58 percent.

Three-and-a-half years ago, the city began to draw its water supply from the Flint River, which was undergoing a pipeline project, the Washington Post reports. The decision aimed to save money, but residents quickly complained about the odor and color of the water. Officials at Flint told its residents the water was safe to drink in 2015 despite the clear hazards residents had been complaining about. The crisis has not yet been resolved.

More: Flint water crisis puts moms in an impossible position

While many Flint residents may have access to resources, such as water filters and bottled water, at clinics, many other don’t receive important medical information, stresses Alexandra Markham, a public health activist based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, who has done work on the ground in Flint.

“Lead crosses the placenta,” explains Markham. “I heard many times, ‘It’s OK, I was pregnant then.’ Not OK. Those babies were exposed as well.”

The babies' exposure to lead can be a result of their mother's exposure to the substance. “During pregnancy, it is more likely lead that has been stored in the bones and teeth from previous exposure will leach back into the blood, thus exposing the baby. Typically, this is a result of dietary deficiencies," Markham says.

This isn’t the first time poor reproductive health has been connected to hazardous environmental factors. According to U.S. News & World Report, research shows that infertility, miscarriages and other birth defects have been linked to exposure to toxic chemicals from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

While toxic chemicals are a part of everyday life, certain demographics are prone to higher exposure than others.

“Because they are more likely to be low-wage workers, women and people of color are disproportionately exposed to many hazardous chemicals, including agricultural pesticides, home cleaning products, industrial cleaning products, and chemicals used in hair and nail salons,” a spokesperson for the National Women’s Law Center explains. That’s why it’s not a surprise that many citizens of Flint, a city that has been exposed to dangerous toxins through a polluted water supply, have experienced reproductive health problems.

“The troubling part, aside from the fact that these discussions were necessary at all, as lead poisoning is 100 percent preventable, is the fact that this information was already available,” Markham mentions. “These were not lessons learned in Flint, and yet the people affected did not know.”

Environmental Racism video

Environmental Racism video

Many would refer to this phenomenon as environmental racism, or what the The Atlantic refers to as the New Jim Crow. Discrimination in public planning causes communities of color, especially black communities, to face disproportionate rates of lead poisoning, asthma and other types of environmental harm. According to Michigan Radio, black Americans make up nearly 60 percent of the population of Flint.

“The crisis with Flint’s lead-poisoned drinking water is terrible, with not only obvious health effects, but ones that may not be apparent for years,” Dr. Mark Payson, medical director with Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine Northern Virginia explains. “This report is a perfect case study of what can go wrong when there are not appropriate oversights of public health and environmental concerns. Having respect and concern for our environment, from working to limit climate change to reducing toxins in our environment, is critical to both our personal health and the health (and even existence of) our children.”

In many cases, environmental racism is especially evident during natural disasters. HuffPost reports flooding hits low-income neighborhoods of color the hardest, especially most recently during Hurricane Harvey. While weather itself doesn’t see race, the faces behind urban planning do. Now the fourth-largest city in the United States, Houston doesn’t have any environmental zoning laws, just deeds, which allow property owners to control and dictate how their land will be used. Wealthy property owners then have the power to decide where power plants go and don’t go, as well as which neighborhoods have their flood guards installed first.

“Don’t ask why, you already know why,” emphasizes Markham. “Look for the money. It’s what made them switch the water supply. It’s what makes them take care of one neighborhood over another.”

Dear Millennials: Stay Home From Work When You're Sick!

By Alex Wilson

As we transition into the colder months year after year, it’s always a good time to remind professionals that it’s OK to take time off if you’re feeling sick. Based on a new study, one demographic needs this reminder more than the rest — millennials.

According to a new study by CityMD, millennials (those who are ages 18 to 34) are more likely to leave their house when they’re sick. About three-quarters of millennials admitted to venturing outside when they were sick, meaning they’re much more likely to potentially expose their colleagues to illness. Only 56 percent of older adults admitted to doing so.

Dr. David Shih, executive vice president of strategy, health and innovation at CityMD, said millennials particularly need the reminder during flu season because they tend to gravitate toward large urban areas.

“Most millennials are young and healthy,” Shih said to CBS News. “They may underestimate how long it takes to recover. When we have a large population who are out and about in public spaces with the flu, there is a high exposure.”

More: 8 Ways Smart People Stay Calm And Combat Stress

It’s understandable why the U.S. population needs a reminder to take their sick days. A recent survey by Glassdoor shows that the average U.S. employee only takes about half of their allotted vacation time. This statistic hasn’t changed since Glassdoor began researching it in 2014.

Regardless of whether it’s for vacation or illness, millennials tend to avoid taking time off of work altogether because of the accompanying guilt. Jake Tully, a 25-year-old creative lead, explained that he neglects to take time away from work due to the burden it would place on his co-workers.

“I feel incredibly lucky to lead excellent and competent groups of people,” Tully said to Forbes. “I don’t ever want to put those I manage in a position where my prolonged absence hinders their day-to-day or makes their lives more difficult.”

More: Cut the Excuses — Here Are 5 Simple Reasons You Should Volunteer ASAP

That difficulty is felt by employees on the bottom of the corporate ladder, regardless of how their boss spends time out of the office. Millennial Taylor Palmer knows that taking time off of work — especially after starting a new job  — could impact one’s professional identity.

“I don’t want people to think that I’m lazy or that I’m a slacker. I’m not,” Palmer said. “I just transitioned into a new job, and my focus is on making the best impression possible. Taking time off of work right after I start, regardless of what it’s for, could hurt me in the long run.”

But is that perception actually true? Andreea Ciulac writes that when you show up to work sick, your colleagues aren’t looking at you as a dedicated employee.

“Next to ‘the guy who heats up leftover fish in the break-room microwave,’ a sick employee is the most disliked person at every office,” Ciulac wrote for The Chicago Tribune. “People don’t see you as a hard worker in that moment; they see you as selfish. They think you came in so you didn’t burn a vacation day.”

Even though it seems like this is a clear case of “damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” there’s an easy solution: Take days off! While it might cause you some short-term stress, it will set you up for long-term success.

More: Your Kids' Lack of Sleep Could Be Affecting Your Workday — Here's How

“After I take a sick day, I sit down with my boss once I’m back in office, review everything I missed and what I need to do to catch up,” Palmer said. “It’s a simple solution, but an effective one.”

Other millennials suggested a flexible work-from-home schedule and streamlined methods of communication (like Slack) as reasons you should take advantage of your sick days.

“If staying in the know helps you relax when you’re out of office, there are tons of ways you can stay connected,” Palmer said. “You just need to commit to not showing up to work. Give yourself time to relax!”

Is Sophie Turner's New Movie Character Even Stronger Than Sansa Stark?

Sophie Turner's character in Game of Thrones (Sansa Stark for those of you who haven't lived) is definitely a strong woman, who has matured into one of the most beloved characters on the show.

More: This Is Emilia Clarke Riding a Dragon Pre-CGI on Game of Thrones

But Turner's next role might even put Sansa's strength to shame, and that's saying something.

In the film, aptly called The Girl Who Fell from the Sky, Turner will play a character based on a real-life girl named Juliane Koepcke, who was the lone survivor of the 1971 plane crash of LANSA Flight 508. Koepcke was ejected from the plane after it was struck by lightning. She fell 10,000 feet, roughly 2 miles, before the canopy of the rainforest broke her fall. (Yes, this really happened.) Not only did Koepcke survive the crash, she then survived for 11 days in the Peruvian rainforest before being rescued. (Again, true story here.)

Turner won't just star in the film, she is also set to produce. The script for the film has reportedly already been written.

Turner shared her excitement about the project on Twitter.

Blake Shelton's Mom Almost Caused Him to Give Up Singing

Blake Shelton admitted in a new interview with Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest that his mother was a "full on stage mom" when he was a kid.

In fact, she even entered a then seven-year-old Shelton into beauty pageants to show off his talents.

"I hated it so much that I almost didn’t want to be a singer anymore," Shelton explained, adding that other kids made fun of him. "I was like, ‘Mom, I’m good. I don’t like singing. I changed my mind.’ It’s embarrassing! You get beat up when you go to school."

Hey, at least she tried to support his dreams.

Luckily, Shelton didn't give up on singing, though he did ditch the pageants. Instead, he moved to Nashville when he was just 17 and released his first single "Austin" at 25.

Shelton also talked about the other leading lady in his life, Gwen Stefani. Many of Shelton's songs off his new album Texoma Shore are about Stefani.

"What are we, The Partridge family or something?” Shelton joked when Ripa and Seacrest asked if Shelton and Stefani sing to one another around the house.

But just because they don't sing to one another around the house doesn't mean they don't write songs for one another.

"She was there when I was recording a lot of [Texoma Shore] in Oklahoma. So, she would hear this stuff as it was going down," Shelton told Seth Meyers on his Wednesday appearance on Late Night. "I remember when I wrote this song and then recorded it, I was like, 'Oh yeah, here’s another one,' because I didn’t want to say ['It’s about you'] … it’s embarrassing! I mean, come on. You don’t want to be like, 'Hey I wrote a song about you.' But I did write a song about her!"

Victoria Beckham is fashion and beauty royalty. Her runway fashions are worn by the Hollywood elite; Estée Lauder recruited her for a wildly successful makeup collaboration; and let’s not forget her status as a pop-culture icon, alongside the Spice Girls.

With this many accomplishments and a sizable income to her name, one might assume Beckham’s personal beauty stash includes items that cost more than our rent… and it does. But there are also a few bargain products sprinkled into her daily routine. According to a recent interview with Into the Gloss, Beckham swears by Bioderma Sensibio H2O Wipes for makeup removal. Yes, the pink ones you always pass in the drugstore aisle.

It’s also important to note that her cleansing steps don’t start and end with wipes. Most of us, especially after a long day, tend to wipe off our makeup and jump right in the bed, not realizing our skin needs a little more love. However, the Bioderma wipes are a great place to start.

How Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Has Impacted My Sex Life

$

0

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or myalgic encephalomyelitis, is one of those disorders most people don’t really understand. In my experience, even knowing someone with the condition doesn’t necessarily elicit the compassion from people other disorders might. CFS being so misunderstood may top the list of reasons.

When I share my condition with others, I’m often told to take a nap or go to bed earlier, both of which would probably do me some good, but won’t cure me of the fatigue I experience every second of my day. I’ve also heard I should exercise more, something that is nearly impossible but for a few specific kinds of exercises due to also having postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, a form of autonomic dysfunction that causes vertigo and sometimes fainting.

I think most find it hard to understand feeling exhausted all the time, often to the point of not being able to sleep, or compare it to feeling tired. Before I got sick, I know I wouldn’t have totally gotten it either. The important takeaway, though, is that CFS impacts absolutely everything about my life, including sex.

More: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Isn't Just "Fatigue" — It's a Deadly Disease

Because I was single for a long time with a few short-lived relationships here and there, sex wasn’t a big concern of mine after I got sick. Sure, I felt horny at times and masturbated if I felt up to it, but having several debilitating medical conditions, including one that saps all your energy, I put sex pretty far down my priority list. What energy I did have, I had to put into working. All the rest of my time was spent recovering from work until my next shift.

It wasn’t until I met my girlfriend that I even put much thought into sex with another person beyond more than a passing fantasy. I didn’t have much reason to despite the fact that I enjoy sex. But my girlfriend rekindled feelings in me I hadn’t felt much since college.

I think it was more than just the fact that it was nice to have sex again, but that it was nice to have sex with her. I feel so lucky to have met her because she is the most patient, compassionate and kind person I know. She appreciates and cares about me and prioritizes my boundaries. It all makes the experience of having sex with her very fulfilling despite having CFS.

There are some days when I can barely do more than collapse into bed because I’m so exhausted and sore. I feel like crying if I’ve forgotten to brush my teeth and have to get back up. Those nights we don’t have sex. I wouldn’t remotely be present if we tried, and my girlfriend doesn’t push me like I’ve experienced in former relationships. In fact, she calls things to a halt if she even thinks I’m hurting beyond what’s normal for me.

I sometimes feel bad, like I’m not fulfilling my role as her girlfriend. I know no one owes anyone else sex for any reason, and I would never feel she owed me sex if our situations were reversed. It’s so easy, though, to slip into depressive thinking when I already feel low. It’s something I’m actively working on.

More: Chronic fatigue syndrome is all in your head — but not the way you think

On those bad nights, my girlfriend cuddles me, assures me she loves me no matter what and says my well-being is far more important to her than sex. Even though I already know, it really helps me to hear her repeat it.

When I do feel up to having sex, I’m often very weak and can’t be on top long before my arms start giving out. This is a drastic change for me — I used to be an athlete, and then CFS happened. Everything about being sick is at least a little frustrating. But I’ve adapted, and the way I have sex has too — for instance, we now switch positions when I start to feel weak.

One benefit of having CFS is that it has forced me to be very open about what I’m feeling before, during and after sex. I have to; otherwise I might hurt myself and not be able to move much the next day. I was very shy and lacked the confidence to say what I wanted before I got sick. I tended to deny my own wants and needs in favor of my partner’s, something I’ve since learned is extremely unhealthy.

Having such open communication during sex is characteristic of our entire relationship. We talk everything through, even when it’s difficult, and grow stronger together as a result.

The bonus of having great communication is that sex between us is amazing and very satisfying. While CFS has created some barriers in my life, it’s also pushed me to be honest in a way I maybe wouldn’t have otherwise. I may never have learned to take care of my body and needs in the ways I do now.

It’s hard to be grateful for something that has changed every single thing about my life, but I can appreciate a perk when I see it. Sex is one of them.

The Real Reasons I Won't Be Watching Shameless This Season

$

It's been a while since I last watched an episode of Shameless. The show premiered in 2011, but I didn't start watching until 2013. I binged the first two seasons, fell head-over-heels in love with Fiona Gallagher and her brood of siblings and praised the series at every turn for its portrayal of working-class people trying to get by.

There are few subjects Shameless doesn't cover. It deals with sex, drugs, abandonment, alcoholism, racism, mixed families, sexuality and mental health. And to be frank, it deals with these issues in such a nuanced way that blew me away in every episode I watched. The show is addictive, but it can also painful to watch.

I didn't stop watching Shameless because it was poorly written or uninteresting. I stopped watching because it was too hard to get through a certain plot.

Watching Ian struggle with mental illness hit me hard

Ian Hospital Shameless

As Ian Gallagher (Cameron Monaghan) began to deal more heavily with his bipolar disorder, I got nervous. Although I don't have bipolar disorder, I have family members who do. The mood disorder's portrayal in media is often pretty negative. Likewise, treatment for bipolar is treated as something bad or that makes people weak. Positive representation is rare but incredibly important.

More: Demi Lovato Would Like You to Stop Misusing the Word 'Bipolar'

I cringed initially at Ian's hypersexualization as a young gay man. Much of the plot concerning his sexuality had already been mired in stereotypes that seemed harmful to casual viewers. I raged at his family members and his boyfriend for being so aggressive about pushing Ian into treatment that he didn't seem ready to receive; beyond that, I took issue with the characters so readily comparing him to his mother, Monica, who'd been repeatedly framed as a horrible mother and a bad person.

At the time, it felt like Shameless was focusing too much on how Ian's family reacted to his increasingly erratic behavior, rather than Ian himself. It felt like his agency had been taken away, and the idea of that was distressing. Nervous about what that might mean for the future of his character (and the show), I bailed.

Now, I'm wondering if I was too quick to judge.

Shameless' portrayal of mental illness is necessary and good

Fiona Shameless GIF
Image: Tumblr

After I stopped watching, I kept tabs on Shameless via the internet (mainly through friends who talk about the show on Tumblr and Twitter). It's been literal years since I last watched the show, but recent discussion surrounding its portrayal of Ian's bipolar disorder has me wanting to watch again. I just don't know if I'm ready.

More: 7 Things You Never Knew About Going to Therapy

Shameless has been repeatedly praised for its honest portrayal of Ian's bipolar disorder. It apparently explores his symptoms both on and off medication, portrays him advocating for himself in the workplace and working against systemic discrimination against people with mental illness, and digs deep into his relationship with himself and with his loved ones as he learns to navigate what his diagnosis means.

That's light-years ahead of where I thought Shameless was headed when Ian's manic behavior first became a focal point. I can't help but wonder what else I'm missing out on by no longer watching the show.

We need more media that explores the nuances of mental illness

Ian Shameless Fix Me GIF
Image: Tumblr

For people who live with bipolar every day, characters like Ian Gallagher are incredibly important. Conversations about mental health are too often focused on how "bad" people living with mental illness are. Show me a headline about a mass shooting, and I'll show you five more about how the perpetrator is mentally ill. Hell, even the president has been "diagnosed" with mental illness as a means of explaining his repeatedly abhorrent behavior.

More: The Consequences of Diagnosing Donald Trump With Mental Illnesses

When we focus solely on how mental illness is damaging, we lose a very important thread: People with mental illness are people, and we deserve to be treated as such. Shameless is telling an important story.

I won't be watching this season, but that doesn't mean I won't eventually catch up. The best art is the kind that pushes boundaries and takes us out of our comfort zones, but sometimes, ingesting that is just plain hard.

Khal Drogo & Daenerys Targaryen Had a Reunion IRL & We Have Lost Our Chill

Consider all my chill gone from here until the end of time because an adorable Game of Thrones reunion happened and I can practically feel the love and joy radiating through my computer screen.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who was thoroughly delighted to see Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke reunite on Instagram and in real life on Sunday, November 5. While the GoT actors have been friendly for years, it's no surprise that the two might actually link up and hang out whenever one of them is in the other's neighborhood. With that in mind, it must be said that if their documentation of the evening is any indication, these two had way too much fun together while Momoa was in London to promote his new film, Justice League.

Clarke's photo and caption are really just about the sweetest thing on the planet. It looks like she and Momoa can barely contain their excitement at being in each other's presence. Look at how hard she's cheesing for her photo. Too cute!

Of course, so is the caption that she wrote to accompany the photo. "When life is so good that your sun and stars is in your city...you lose your eyes and gain 5 grins (and gins) where until now they'd only been one... (*grins- there's always more gins). @prideofgypsies YOU ALWAYS MOTHER OF DRAGONS MAIN MAN," she noted.

Momoa, who regularly documents the many reunions he has with his friends, was not going to miss an opportunity to do the same whilst he chilled with Clarke. Over on his Instagram, he posted a photo of he and Clarke standing outside, both wearing badass fur coats that, if I didn't know any better, make them look like Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen in modern times.

"Crazy mad insane LOVE for this queen it’s truly like bubbles of giggles are in our bellies when we are together. It’s a shame we don’t get to see each other as much as we would like but when we do [I] feel like a fucking KHAL love u @emilia_clarke always forever," he wrote, to go alongside this sweet, fur-fledged photo.

And as if this GoT pair weren't cool enough IRL, Momoa's Justice League co-star, Gal Gadot, joined the two during their reunion. Luckily, Momoa saw fit to post a photo of the trio as well. This is officially the best celebrity reunion, you guys. I'm calling it right now.
