Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon's mini-me daughter, Ava Phillippe, is all grown up and about to make her society debut. According to Vanity Fair, Ava will be one of six Americans presented at le Bal des Débutantes at the Peninsula Paris hotel on November 25.

Ava, who turned 18 in September, will reportedly be wearing Giambattista Valli Haute Couture to the debutante ball, or cotillion. Maharaja Padmanabh Singh, the young monarch of Jaipur, will act as Ava's cavalier (read: escort for the occasion).

Ava's first debutante ball, this signifies her official introduction into high society. Previous debutantes at le Bal range from Robert Kennedy Jr.'s daughter Kyra to Italian princess Mathilde Melusine Ruspoli.

Page Six reports that the other Americans "coming out" at le Bal this year alongside Ava are as follows: Warner Music Group owner Len Blavatnik's daughter Laila, 18, Steve Harvey's stepdaughter, Lori, 20, producers Bradley and Colleen Bell's daughter Charlotte, 17, filmmaker Louise Malle's great-niece Jeanne, 16, and Stanley Ho's daughter Alice, 18.

Ava's debut marks a rare public appearance for the unassuming teen, who historically has chosen a low-key lifestyle over being in the spotlight. However, Ava's famous mama has gushed about her daughter's distinctive sense of style and self.

"She's so much cooler than I am!" Witherspoon told Us Weekly in April. "She's very cutting-edge, and she knows a lot about fashion, and she has her own sense of style, which is amazing."

Old Dynasty vs. New Dynasty: How Mom’s Fave Soapy Drama Is Getting Updated

Chances are high that if you mention the name Dynasty to your mother, aunt or grandmother, she'll respond with either a surprised face and an approving nod or maybe a wistful "Oh, yes." For this generation of women, Dynasty is an iconic 1980s soapy drama that captivated viewers across the country. Running for nine seasons and spotlighting the talents of actors Linda Evans, Joan Collins, Heather Locklear and so many more, Dynasty followed the drama brewing in the lives of the uber-rich Carrington family. Think Gossip Girl's very sassy precursor.

Funnily enough, it turns out that the creators of Gossip Girl saw an opportunity to keep the soapy, super-dramatic spirit of both the 1980s version of Dynasty and their Gossip Girl baby alive by rebooting Dynasty for the millennial set. One look at the trailer indicates that all of the extravagant wealth and over-the-top drama will be there, but it's also apparent that some big changes are being made as well.

Here's how the 2017 version of Dynasty is switching it up from the version that first aired in 1981.

1. The cast is more visibly racially diverse in the Dynasty reboot

CW Jeff Colby Dynasty Character Intro

CW Jeff Colby Dynasty Character Intro

The 1981 version of Dynasty was fairly white in its core cast, but it looks like the reboot will pay more attention to inclusivity. By moving from its original setting in Denver to Atlanta, the show has taken the opportunity to acknowledge that this city is not predominantly white, nor are the 1 percent strictly a white community. The Colbys, famous foes of the Carringtons, are now a powerful black family in Atlanta; from the trailer, it looks like Fallon Carrington and Jeff Colby will be coming together in order to seize power. Let the games begin.

2. The addition of a gay male character will further build robust diversity

CW Sammy Jo Dynasty Character Intro

Heather Locklear's character in the original Dynasty, Sammy Jo Dean Carrington, has been adapted into Sammy Jo, Crystal's nephew who begins a romantic fling with Steven Carrington. There's bound to be the same sexiness with Sammy Jo, but there will certainly be new territory to be explored through these LGBTQ characters.

3. Familiar Dynasty faces from the original show could pop up

Dynasty 1981 Alexis Krystle Scene

According to executive producer Josh Schwartz, just because the new Dynasty is rebooting a ton of stuff, that doesn't mean there won't be callbacks to the original show. Nor is it entirely out of the question for familiar Dynasty faces to appear. In fact, Schwartz teased over the summer that there's a chance Collins, who played Blake Carrington's ex-wife Alexis on the original Dynasty, could make an appearance in the future.

4. The character of Krystle has changed since the 1981 version aired

CW Crystal Dynasty Character Intro

CW Crystal Dynasty Character Intro

In the original Dynasty, Krystle (played by the forever cool Evans) was the character through which we entered the incredibly rich and extravagant world of the Carringtons and Colbys, but she was fairly conventional and, well, white. In the reboot, Crystal is going to be a heightened version of the old Krystle with layers of ambition piled onto her existence as a Latina woman moving through very white and privileged spaces. Expect Crystal to shake things up in a number of ways.

5. The women of the 2017 Dynasty are more complex and will hold the show's focus

Dynasty Women GIF

The trailer and further commentary from Schwartz both indicate that the women of 2017's Dynasty are much more interested in achieving and maintaining power in ways that only the men of the 1981 version could have achieved. To Variety, Schwartz noted that "both of these women [Crystal and Fallon] are ambitious career women... they want to run this business." He also pointed out that "having Crystal have a more senior role in the company, not just being the secretary, makes her more credible of vying for control of this company with Fallon. They’re competitive, they’re both smart, they’re ambitious."

6. Expect our modern way of life to heavily influence the 2017 reboot

Dynasty Wealth GIF
Image: Giphy

Back in 1981, cell phones hadn't yet become widely available, there was no social media, and the pressure to be woke about the divide between the wealthy 1 percent and the rest of the world wasn't as, well, pressing. Moving the show from Denver to Atlanta and making a majority of the characters millennials will make the reboot feel accessible and relatable in a way wouldn't happen for modern viewers watching the 1981 version.

7. Don't expect the catfights from the 1981 Dynasty to carry over to 2017

Dynasty Catfight GIF
Image: Giphy

Sure, the initial trailer for the reboot is teasing at least one face-off between Fallon and Crystal, but don't expect there to be sniping and petty catfights aplenty. While the old Dynasty thrived on ramping up the drama with this kind of tactic, the new Dynasty is more than likely going to see the women and men of this world use their wits to best their enemies. Plus, if the show is going to focus on its ambitious women, then throwing them into reductive catfight scenes might be a bit counterproductive, right?

The Dynasty reboot starts airing Wednesday on the CW.

Why Foot Cellulitis Is More Than Just an Ordinary Skin Infection

Chances are, you’ve had cellulitis or know someone who has. The infection is incredibly common, caused by bacteria entering the skin thanks to a simple cut, a case of athlete’s foot or a skin condition like eczema. It usually shows up on the feet and lower legs, but it can affect other parts of the body. While it’s easily treated if caught early, it always pays to be proactive. We asked the experts for the lowdown on cellulitis and how to combat it so you can keep your feet healthy.

What is cellulitis?

Cellulitis is a skin infection caused by a break in the skin such as a scratch or a cut, which then allows bacteria to enter. The infection causes the skin to swell, and turn red, tender and warm to the touch. Cellulitis can be minor or severe depending on the breed of bacteria that’s involved (usually staphylococcus or streptococcus), but almost everyone experiences that kind of inflammation.

More7 Important Things Your Feet Could Be Telling You About Your Health

Scratches and scrapes aside, there are other risk factors that increase the chances of developing cellulitis. Dr. John Diaz, a plastic surgeon, says those with weakened immune systems such as the elderly are more susceptible, while diseases like diabetes make it harder for the skin to fight off infection. Diaz explains that some medications, including steroids, also put people at greater risk. Specialist dermatologist Dr. Kate DeAmbrosis adds that surgery, trauma, varicose veins and dermatologic disorders like eczema “disrupt skin’s integrity” and offer “easier access to the bacterial organisms that cause cellulitis.”

What is foot cellulitis?
Image: Getty Images/Design: Ashley Britton/SheKnows

You might be wondering, why feet? It makes sense, really — our feet take a beating every day, and they’re more likely to come into contact with bacteria. For example, walking barefoot exposes the feet to objects that can easily cut the skin and then gives bacteria from dirty or contaminated floors an entry point, Diaz says.

“Someone with athlete’s foot may already have bacterial contamination of the toes. A simple scratch or small cut on the foot will then allow easy passage of bacteria into the skin surface,” he tells SheKnows.

What’s more — and this is a fun fact — DeAmbrosis says the webbing on our feet is a “reservoir for bacteria.”

While cellulitis isn’t contagious, it can quickly spread to the lymph nodes, bloodstream or other parts of the body if left untreated.

Signs and symptoms of cellulitis

At first, cellulitis appears as a red, swollen rash and the affected skin feels tender, "stretched" or even painful. As the infection worsens, those areas of inflamed skin grow larger, and the rash can spread very quickly within 24 hours. According to Diaz, cellulitis caused by more aggressive forms of bacteria can lead to blisters and dimpling of the skin along with fever and chills.

More: 6 Reasons to Get Pedicures, Even in Winter

The other major symptoms associated with cellulitis are:

  • Sweating
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Low blood pressure
  • Confusion
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches

However, DeAmbrosis points out that some patients don’t have any of those associated symptoms early on.

The golden rule? If you break out into a rash, get it checked out sooner rather than later.

How to treat foot cellulitis

Luckily, cellulitis can be easily treated — but it’s important to take action before the infection spreads. In most cases, oral antibiotics clear the infection fully within 10 to 14 days. The symptoms usually start to subside after three or four days.

If the pain is intense, your doctor may also prescribe a pain reliever. It also helps to keep your feet elevated to reduce swelling.

MoreEasing Foot Pain: The Best Advice Is to Change Your Shoes

Protect your feet to prevent cellulitis

As always, prevention is the best cure, and it all comes down to taking care of your skin. DeAmbrosis suggests being proactive about any skin conditions. “Wear compression stockings to prevent lower leg swelling, manage varicose veins early and control inflammatory skin diseases like eczema.”

Diaz agrees, saying it’s key to keep a close eye on any skin changes, and if you do develop a cut on the skin, make sure to wash it immediately with soap and water. After that, he says that covering any wounds with antibiotic creams and a dressing will also prevent the overgrowth of bacteria that could lead to cellulitis.

George Clooney's Denouncement of Harvey Weinstein Sends a Clear Message

George Clooney has become one of the few prominent male celebrities in Hollywood who has chosen to speak out against the alleged behavior of producer Harvey Weinstein. Late Monday evening, Clooney gave his statement about Weinstein to The Daily Beast, wherein he opened up about the state of his relationship to Weinstein and his feelings on the allegations of sexual assault made by actors like Ashley Judd and Romola Garai as well as being the center of a New York Times exposé that sources a plethora of testimonies for those in the film industry who speak about the open secret of Weinstein's allegedly abusive behavior. In doing speaking up about this event currently rocking the film industry, Clooney may have just taken a step in a commendable direction.

More: Harvey Weinstein Was Fired From His Own Company

Clooney spoke over the phone to a Daily Beast reporter, who was able to detail the actor's full statement which appears to denounce Weinstein and his alleged actions despite having cultivated a working relationship with the producer over 20 years.

"It’s indefensible [the Daily's Beast's emphasis]. That’s the only word you can start with," Clooney began. "Harvey’s admitted to it, and it’s indefensible. I’ve known Harvey for 20 years. He gave me my first big break as an actor in films on From Dusk Till Dawn, he gave me my first big break as a director with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. We’ve had dinners, we’ve been on location together, we’ve had arguments. But I can tell you that I’ve never seen any of this behavior—ever [the Daily's Beast's emphasis]."

Clooney's condemnation of Weinstein is an example of the noticeably small group of male celebrities (which includes Mark Ruffalo, Christian Slater and Seth Rogen) who are coming forward to denounce Weinstein. To the possible dismay of readers, a recent Guardian article made note of the many male celebrities have remained silent about these allegations against Weinstein, with special attention paid to those men who have made statements in the past supportive of women and gender equality.

In the interest of fairness, it should be noted that news of Weinstein's alleged behavior broke on Thursday, October 5 and by Sunday, October 8 he had been fired from his position at his company, The Weinstein Company. Things have moved at an unnaturally fast pace and that may have affected the ability for these men to give their opinions immediately.

Female celebrities, on the other hand, have been quite vocal about Weinstein. While Judd and Garai, sadly, condemn Weinstein from a personal standpoint, a whole host of female celebrities (including Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, Lena Dunham, Jessica Chastain and Rose McGowan) have immediately come out in public condemnation of Weinstein.

What can be stated confidently is that Clooney's statement is one that should hearten those who are in need of reassurance that those in the film industry have the right outlook on an issue as grave as this.

Chip & Joanna Gaines Are Talking About Why They're Leaving Fixer Upper

Updated Oct. 10, 2017, 8:00 a.m. PT: Chip and Joanna Gaines may have heard the rumors that they're only threatening to end their wildly popular show, Fixer Upper, in order to land a more lucrative contract, but their rep says that's simply not true.

A source told Page Six this week that the Gaineses were only holding out until Discovery Communications completes its purchase of HGTV, the network that airs their show, because its current owner, Scripps, has "very restrictive" contracts with talent that take a cut of everything they make from books, appearances, endorsements and products, all things the Gaineses have going on on the side. With their newly launched home decor line at Target, the Page Six source said, they were hoping for a better contract that would allow them "more money, less work, more control."

The PR manager for the Gaineses, however, denies that.

"Chip and Jo’s decision to leave Fixer Upper is truly just based on wanting to catch their breath for a minute; to rest, refresh, and spend even more time with their family and growing businesses," their rep said. "It is not based on anything else people might read. They were very open and honest about their reasoning behind this decision when they first shared the announcement."

And for fans, don't worry — there's still another season of Fixer Upper set to air before the couple calls it quits on the show that made them famous. They've been tight-lipped about whatever plans they may have for the future, but we highly doubt this is the last we'll see of Chip and Joanna Gaines.

Original story:

It's the end of an era at HGTV. Chip and Joanna Gaines, the couple behind the massively popular house-flipping series Fixer Upper, have announced that they intend to end the show after the next season.

"It is with both sadness and expectation that we share the news that season 5 of Fixer Upper will be our last," they wrote in a joint statement on their shared blog Tuesday. "While we are confident that this is the right choice for us, it has for sure not been an easy one to come to terms with. Our family has grown up alongside yours, and we have felt you rooting us on from the other side of the screen. How bittersweet to say goodbye to the very thing that introduced us all in the first place."

While fans of the show will no doubt struggle with the news, it seems like a good time for the Gaineses to move on. After all, they've probably fixed up every house in all of Waco, Texas, on HGTV's dime. And knowing them, they have something new in the works. We just don't know what it is quite yet.

More: Apparently, Donald Trump Likes to Watch HGTV on Air Force One

But based on their statement, it might be a minute before we see more from the Gaineses. It sounds like they might be ready for a break.

"We’ve been all over the world now," they wrote. "But there’s something really romantic about not just saying, 'Remember where you came from,' but really living that out."

And they want to give their four kids, ages 12, 10, 9 and 7, a chance to grow up outside the spotlight.

"They’re so young, and we want to give them the chance to have a normal childhood," they said. "Family is the most important thing in the world."

We'll be waiting to see what the Gaineses have up their sleeves, but in the meantime, we hope they enjoy taking a little break from their nonstop lives as international celebs.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy & Vanessa Lachey End the Feud Rumors With a Dance

Updated Oct. 10, 2017, 8:15 a.m. PT: OK, so maybe Vanessa Lachey and her Dancing with the Stars partner Maks Chmerkovskiy weren't actually feuding when he skipped their performance together due to "personal issues."

They took to the stage again together this week to perform a rumba that was inspired by their children, who were born just a few weeks apart. An emotional Lachey explained about how difficult it was to convey all the emotion they had into the dance, but that they were able to do it together because of their partnership.

"We know what the week is, and that is what dance is," she told Entertainment Tonight. "It is literally speaking emotion through movement, and I was worried I wasn't going to be able to do it. But I know I got this guy literally standing there, and he’s got my back… I just looked over and grabbed on and was like, ‘We got this.’"

That's a pretty sweet sentiment for the pair, so if there ever were a feud, we're getting the feeling they were able to work through it.

Updated, Oct. 4, 11:30 a.m. PT: Maybe they aren't feuding? Maksim Chmerkovskiy took to Twitter to explain his absence from Monday's episode of Dancing With the Stars, and his promise to be back with his partner, Vanessa Lachey, next week seems to point away from the rumors that they were having serious chemistry problems.

"As you are all aware, I had to leave the show last week to take care of some personal issues. I take full responsibility for my absence," Chmerkovskiy wrote. "And want to apologize to my partner Vanessa. We are both looking forward to dancing for our fans next week!"

Meanwhile, Lachey also took to social media to say she can't wait to be back to work with Chmerkovskiy.

"I can’t WAIT to get started tomorrow with @maksimc on week 4!" she wrote on Instagram. "We’re cookin' up something special for you!"

Maks and Vanessa address DWTS feud rumors 3

Maks and Vanessa address DWTS feud rumors 3

So are they actually feuding? If so, they're trying really hard to keep it under wraps.

Original story:

It wouldn't be Dancing with the Stars without some drama, and it looks like we might already be getting some in Week 3. Viewers most likely noticed that Maksim Chmerkovskiy didn't dance on Monday night, and sources are saying the reason is his partner, Vanessa Lachey.

More: Sasha Pieterse Opens Up About PCOS — What You Need to Know About the Condition

"Maks is dealing with a personal issue so Alan [Bersten] is stepping in and dancing with Vanessa tonight," host Erin Andrews told the crowd and viewers, not offering any more details about this alleged "personal issue" that kept former Mirrorball champ Chmerkovskiy from the stage.

Luckily, a source dished all those missing details to People magazine. "There’s a big chemistry issue," the insider claimed. "They both have big personalities and that’s not always the best recipe for a good partnership."

More: Maksim Chmerkovskiy & Peta Murgatroyd Had the Most Magical Wedding in 2017

The source added that Lachey and Chmerkovskiy "have been fighting a lot" even though Lachey has publicly called Chmerkovskiy the "best coach." And honestly? We can see it.

It wouldn't be the first time Chmerkovskiy had a major personal issue with his dance partner. After Season 13, he told reporters of his then-partner Hope Solo, "That’s literally the only person that I could dislike from my past, present or future." Those are some pretty harsh words, so it sounds like as much as we love Chmerkovskiy, he does have a strong personality under all that charm.

More: Jordan Fisher & Lindsay Arnold Blow Up DWTS With Their Fiery Chemistry

Then again, this is just a rumor, and People wasn't able to reach reps for either Chmerkovskiy or Lachey for a comment. Until this is confirmed, we're just going to continue under the assumption that we'll see these two partners back together on next week's episode.

Our Snacking Habits Are Adding Up to a Shocking Amount of Extra Calories

We’re a workaholic culture, and it’s easy to get so wrapped up in our work, it takes up every element of our day. That probably includes eating lunch at your desk while your brain is wrapped up in your computer.

More: 10 Nutritious snacks that’ll keep you from the vending machine at work

Turns out, that’s not only bad for our work-life balance, but it’s also terrible for our diet. Not paying attention to what we are eating leads to a lot of random grazing during the day — probably more than any of us can imagine, says a new study.

The survey, via Dutch food brand Kallø, says those extra calories add up to 100,000 extra calories per year for the average woman. In fact, according to The Sun, the average woman will eat 135 cookies, 90 slices of cake, 90 packets of sweets and 45 doughnuts a year while at work and probably so distracted she’s not even fully appreciating all those calories and grams of sugar she’s putting in her mouth.

It seems most of this snacking, according to the survey, is happening between 10:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m., which makes sense to any of us who have ever been stuck at a desk staring at the clock. How do we unpack this information? Well, if you find yourself to be one these office snackers, maybe pack some healthy treats like cut up veggies or hummus so you can keep things under control. That will of course ultimately add up too, but we do what we can.

Monica Lewinsky's Anti-Bullying PSA Shows Consequences of Online Comments IRL

$

The privilege of anonymity has enabled people using online comment sections and social media to unleash hate-fueled vitriol at virtually every demographic, completely without consequence. Few people know that better than Monica Lewinsky, who came into the public eye just as use of the internet started really taking off and has referred to herself as “patient zero” of internet shaming.

Her latest project is an anti-bullying public service announcement focused on the detrimental effects of online comments and how utterly ridiculous they sound when they are said to people offline in real life. The video, entitled “In Real Life,” features actors saying and receiving comments typically reserved for the internet to people in real-world situations. For example, in one scene, a white woman approaches a woman with darker skin on the street, saying, “You know what? All of you Muslims need to go back to the hellholes you’re from.” Another features a man accosting a gay couple in a restaurant, saying, “I think gay people are sick, and you guys should just kill yourself.”

ML

ML

It’s pretty hard to watch, but that makes the message that much more impactful. If you’re horrified by people saying these things to strangers in real life, why would it ever be acceptable to do the same thing online? Also of note is the fact that all of the comments featured in the video are real social media posts.

More: Why Having Fewer Friends in High School Has Major Benefits

But there’s a silver lining: The video also features passersby who react to the bullying they witness and intervene and/or assist the person being harassed — and they weren’t actors.

Lewinsky told People that the basis for the video was her own experiences.

“I think that there are probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions of horrible things, which have been said about me online and in print,” she told the magazine. “But I can count on one, maybe two hands, how many times people have been rude to my face. That’s my own personal connection. When you are with someone, when you see someone face to face, you are reminded of their humanity.”

One scene that was particularly poignant for Lewinsky (and me, for that matter) featured a woman being fat-shamed in a café, which she said she related to “in a deep, emotional way.”

“I know what it feels like to be judged and picked apart regarding your body. To be body shamed,” she told People.

Monica, honey — me too. (Shoutout to those who have taken to social media to point out that I’m too fat to be a health editor, and their helpful suggestions to eat a salad and/or step foot in a gym!) Having said that, I’ve also experienced plenty of fat-calling and shaming in real life, proving that this is one area where society has deemed it acceptable to say horrible things to people’s faces (in the name of our health, of course).

MoreTalking About Mental Health Is Good — Investing in Mental Health Is Better

People are all about mental health awareness lately — and that’s wonderful — but it’s time that we look one step beyond the existence of mental health issues and start taking into consideration some of the behavior that causes them. And yes, that includes bullying, both online and in person. So let’s all try to be a little less horrible and think about the consequences of hateful comments before spewing them mindlessly.

Vanessa Lachey revealed on this week's Dancing with the Stars that her third child with husband Nick Lachey was born a frightening 10 weeks earlier than his due date — an event she said changed her forever.

Monday night was Dancing with the Stars' "Most Memorable Year" episode, with contestants recounting the stories behind the night's dances. This could have also been titled the "Most Tear-Filled Episode" episode.

Just make him OK.”

Fortunately, the baby and Lachey were very much OK despite the emergency surgery. The Lacheys named their early arriver Phoenix Robert. He joined brother Camden, 5, and sister Brooklyn, 2. Lachey posted this ridiculously sweet first Instagram pic on Dec. 26 announcing his birth.

Jon Stewart Tried Really Hard to Say Something Nice About Donald Trump

Once again, President Donald Trump has been tweeting insults at whomever crosses his path. This time, it was late-night talk show hosts, who Trump blasted for siding with Democrats and called "unfunny" in a tweet before asking them, "Should we get equal time?"

Stephen Colbert had a plan to try to even things up by inviting his good friend and fellow late-night host Jon Stewart to help him make sure that for every negative thing that was said about Trump, something positive would be said too. All about equal time, right?

Except it wasn't as easy as it sounds.

Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart give Trump equal time

Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart give Trump equal time

Colbert started off by talking about how ridiculous it is that Trump is asking for this bizarre sort of equality in news coverage, saying, "Donald Trump thinks we should give equal time on a comedy show even though the election is over, kind of like if The Big Bang Theory was immediately followed by the Creationist Bazinga Fun Time Hour starring Jesus and his roommate, a T-Rex. Look out for the spinoff, Young Jesus."

Stewart was then asked to say something nice about Trump. He looked around nervously, then whispered to Colbert, asking if he could have more time to prepare. Finally, he said, "Donald Trump is not a cannibal."

Next, Colbert mentioned more literal facts that have happened in the last week that maybe don't paint Trump in the most appealing light. "Last week, we learned that Donald Trump’s own Secretary of State called him a [bleep] moron. Not only is that an insult, he gave away Trump’s Secret Service code name," Colbert said.

Stewart answered with, "Given the choice between having hot lava poured into my pee hole and Donald Trump being president I choose lav... the latter."

Finally, Colbert mentioned Trump's latest edict that gives employers the option to deny birth control coverage for women on religious and moral grounds. Steward replied with, "Donald Trump is great to women... Good... Better than Harvey Weinstein."

Colbert sharply and cheekily remarked, "I would fact-check that."

Stewart's faux breaking point came when a clip was played showing Trump in a roomful of top military personnel telling reporters that we are currently in "the calm before the storm." When prompted by reporters about what "storm" he's talking about, he only said cryptically, "You'll see," which clearly set Stewart off.

"What the fuck is wrong with this guy?! Why would you — you’ll find out? A cliffhanger. Surrounded by military people," Stewart said. "How is all this not the storm? This is all the storm. And what kind of a sociopath would use that terminology while people are still literally cleaning up from storms? I’m sorry. I can’t be positive. I can’t do it."

Yes, Your Dog Is Totally Barking at an Invisible Ghost in the Corner

Just call your dog Haley Joel Osment, because just like that cute little kid in The Sixth Sense, your pooch can see dead people.

A lot of people kid about dogs barking at ghosts all the time, but this is no joke — they really do. A lot of animals pick up on more things than humans, but dogs are even more tuned in than most. They sense energy, extra sensory phenomenon and otherworldly beings.

I often encounter an animal that is having a problem with ghosts in my work as a professional animal communicator (pet psychic). Sometimes they tell me the ghost is unhappy, afraid, unsettled, lost and lonely. They just need a little help to find their way home.

Sometimes the animal is worried and scared because the ghost is angry, vengeful and seeking retribution for what happened to them. Those hauntings are the hardest to find closure with because the ghost has to accept the truth about what happened to them, forgive and let go before they can go on. Other times they are happy and content, peacefully watching out for their loved ones until they are ready to cross over completely into the next life.

Cassie is a wonderful border collie dog I visited who was behaving very oddly. She and her human mom, JoAnne, had just moved to an old farmhouse in a new city. Shortly after they got there, Cassie would bark wildly, staring fixedly at what appeared to be empty space. Nothing her mom did would calm her down. She carefully watched the ceiling and corners of the room for hours before wandering off to go do something else.

Cassie acted like she was following someone around the house and even out into the yard around the house. Sometimes she would sit down, cock her head to the side, ears straight up and listen attentively... but to what? What did she hear? What did she see? What did she know that we didn't?

Worried, JoAnne contacted me for help. Was her dog suffering a brain tumor? Going crazy? Why was she behaving that way? And even more importantly, what could be done to help her?

When I spoke with Cassie, she told me about a young girl with blonde hair who appeared in a simple grey, dirty, torn cotton dress. The ghost girl talked to the dog because only the dog could sense her presence and hear her thoughts. She had been isolated and lonely for a very long time.

When I tuned into the ghost girl, I learned her name was Sarah Jane. She was born in 1885, the only girl among five boys. Her mother had died shortly after she was born. Her father was a gruff, stern alcoholic who raised his family with a strong and often brutal hand. Her father and brothers abused and beat her just for fun when the mood struck. One day she went to town for supplies and a woman approached her, asking her name. The woman was concerned about her, having heard about her situation. She encouraged Sarah Jane to have faith and to say nothing. She would be in contact as soon as she could figure out what to do.

Sarah Jane went home that day hopeful that something might change, but before she could find her freedom, she was beaten badly, and died when her head hit a log.

Her family didn't mourn her. They only found a rough spot to bury her on their property and went on about their business. There wasn't even a marker to show for her life lost.

Sarah Jane's spirit continued as a ghost. Because she had no one on the other side who could welcome her and guide her through, and because she didn't know what to expect in the afterlife, she found herself stuck on the property. For years she simply observed the people coming and going as day by day went by... until one day the nice lady and lovely dog moved into the old farm house. For the first time the dog's person paid close attention to what her dog was telling her.

That day as I shared Cassie and Sarah Jane's story with JoAnne, something even more extraordinary happened. In a remarkable moment of clarity and remembrance, JoAnne flashed back to a past life. She knew beyond a doubt that she was in fact the woman from the town who had been trying to help the girl. She remembered grieving, feeling sad and guilty that she and her friends had not acted quickly enough to save the girl.

JoAnne told me that she wasn't even sure why she had moved here to this place. Now that she knew the rest of the story, she realized that she had been called back to make good on her promise to help the child. With tears in her eyes, she greeted the ghost girl with love in her heart. They connected and began a deep loving conversation which I helped mediate.

For the first time, Sarah Jane felt loved and cared for. Cassie calmed down and settled peacefully, knowing everything was okay.

And when Sarah Jane was close by? Cassie would tell her mom. And all was well.

Jenna Dewan Tatum's Janet Jackson Dance Was Interrupted By the Cutest Crasher

Don't you just hate it when you're rehearsing your dance routine for Janet Jackson's Hollywood Bowl concert and your kid grabs onto your legs so you totally can't do that super-fly move?

Yeah, us too. World of Dance host Jenna Dewan Tatum was rehearsing for Sunday's Hollywood Bowl concert when Everly, her daughter with Channing Tatum, decided she wanted her mom. Nothing, not even totally lit hip-hop, was going to keep this 4-year-old away. Dewan Tatum posted an adorable clip on Instagram of herself trying to keep dancing while Everly clings to her and makes an impressive if vague noise.

The same thing — the interruption, the clinging, the wailing — has happened to so many of us. Except, you know, in the supermarket, which is really close to a Janet Jackson concert rehearsal. Almost the same, really.

Interruptions aside, Dewan Tatum was thrilled to be working with Janet Jackson again. She shared another Instagram post about the big event. “Generations of Janet kids brought together…! Dancing for her was always way more than a job, it was being part of a legacy. I have been pinching myself all day being in a room years later dancing with these legends..."

Everly's meh reaction to her mom's dance rehearsal is pretty much standard for her, it seems. Channing Tatum told Jimmy Kimmel in August that Everly is less of a dance lover than both of her parents. He talked to Kimmel about letting Everly finally see Step Up, the dance film during which he and Dewan Tatum met. "We actually showed [Everly] Step Up for the first time. We were like, 'This is really cool! It's got dancing. She's going to love it!' Within 10 seconds, she was like, 'Can I watch a real movie? I don't know, like a good one?' I'm like, 'What do you mean? This is a real movie! This is such a real movie! They made like seven more of these! You will watch it! Sit down!'"

We're wondering if Everly will give a hard pass on dance lessons and hold out for soccer or softball instead. Or maybe singing? Based on the recent video evidence, she sure has the lungs for it.

25 Cat Behaviors That Seem Random, but Really Aren't

It's no secret that cats are stone-cold weirdos — that's kinda why we love them so much. The only complaint we really have is that they're always up to some strange, unexplainable hijinks that continue to baffle us. Yes, despite the fact that we share the same habitat as our beloved little pets, they remain somewhat of a mystery.

But if you think your cat's crazy behavior is totally random, think again. There are actually some rational explanations behind the crazy stuff they do on a day-to-day basis. Check it out.

1. Nail biting

There are a few reasons that your kitty may bite their nails. One is that they are just giving themselves a little manicure. Two, she's an anxious kitty with a bad habit. Just like humans bite their nails when nervous or bored, so does your cat, according to Cat World. As this habit may be hard to break, find the root of the problem to see if it is indeed a ball of nerves causing her to nibble at her nails.

When your cat is giving you the "eye of the tiger" or looking at something intensely, watch out! She's probably ready to pounce on her next prey. Cats like to examine their victims to ensure that when they are finally ready to spring, it will be for good reason. Unless you don't want your cat to pounce on the object (think a new pair of Tory Burch flip flops), let her practice her natural instinct.

3. Random sprint

Does your cat run at an enormously fast speed and bounce off of the couch? No need to fear. Your cat, who can run up to 31 miles per hour, is just exercising! Most house cats have an extreme amount of energy that gets pent up and needs to be released. If you're not regularly exercising your kitty, you may want to start playing or walking him to avoid random sprints through the house.

Why do you sit in an unladylike position? Because it's comfortable, of course! Same goes for your kitty. When she is sprawled with her legs open, she is relaxed, happy and trusting in you. She knows that she is safe in your presence, so she can relax.

The reason your cat rubs against furniture is the same reason she likes to rub herself against you. She is giving you her "scent;" you are her human, and she wants the whole world to know. By releasing pheromones from her head, your cat is showing pride in her ownership over you.

For most people, cats are a great pet because they pretty much clean up after themselves. But uncovered poo is usually an indication of an angry kitty. Did you recently show him dominance? This could be his treat to show you that he is, in fact, the dominant one in your relationship.

But, it can also be a sign of a medical issue, according to Vet Street. So if your cat continues to leave their poop uncovered, you might want to take them to the vet.

Not only does your cat hiss to express anger, but also fear. Most cats will hiss when agitated, or to simply warn you to back off and avoid a kitty fit. Other cats will hiss when they're afraid of something or someone. A hiss may also erupt when they feel threatened by a new member of the animal family. Let your cat calm down, and show him that all is right in his world.

When your cat's ears are twitching back and forth, they are expressing a feeling of anxiety or agitation. This action is to show whoever is irritating them to back off. If not, they may act on the anxiety by running away, hissing or swatting at the source.

Your cat learns to communicate with you in the same way that a baby does — through listening intently and imitating. So when your cat meows like a baby, she is probably imitating the "baby" way that you speak with her. It's typical for humans to speak to an animal in the same way that they speak with a baby — through simple words and soft vocalization. Your kitty just wants to engage in the conversation.

7 In-Flight Beauty Tips Straight From a Pro Crew Member

$

Even on the shortest flights, the bummer combo of altitude and dry, recycled cabin air can wreak havoc on skin. Ever wonder how flight attendants manage to protect their skin against the high skies? Well, we went straight to the source and asked Emirates cabin crew member Ashleigh Joseph how she deals.

If you’ve ever flown with the Dubai-based airline, you’re aware that its crew members are famously polished and put-together with impeccable skin, hair and makeup from takeoff to landing. Joseph let us in on her secrets for air travel prep, in-flight fixes and post-landing recovery tips. Here, grab her top seven tips to smooth beauty sailing at 35,000 feet and above.

Preparation is key

“Moisturizing lotion, lip balm and body spray are all musts when it comes to flying,” says Joseph. “With the air 37,000 feet up being quite dry, it can be harsh on the skin. Use a good facial mask 2 to 3 times a week to help keep your skin in really good condition, and use rose water when flying, which can be taken in a refillable spray container and used throughout the flight.”

Stay hydrated

Between eating at 4.30 a.m. and traveling across the world’s time zones, Joseph’s one constant is keeping her body hydrated at all times. She recommends lots of green tea, water with lemon or mint and fruits and vegetables to boost your immune system.

More: 6 Pumpkin Beauty Products That Won’t Make You Feel Basic

Prime time

“One thing this job has taught me is to use primer, primer and more primer before applying makeup.” she says. Splurge on a primer that will keep your makeup in place, and Joseph promises your makeup won’t budge the entire flight.

Go natural

“If you do wear makeup, make sure your look is natural,” Joseph suggests. “And avoid waterproof mascara, as this dries out your lashes and is harder to remove after a flight or sleeping onboard.” But one beauty item that Joseph calls her best friend is lip liner. “Lip liners help attain and accentuate the wonderful ‘Dubai lip’ most are trying to achieve.”

Set your makeup

Joseph credits a setting spray with keeping her look fresh despite the long-haul flights. “It requires minimal replenishment throughout the flight and that’s why I love it!” Who doesn’t want to come off a 12-hour flight looking completely relaxed and impossibly fresh looking?

More: WTF Is an Essence & Should You Be Using One?

Pack the essentials

"If I look in my cabin bag right now, I’ll have at least three of each: roll on perfume, a shower cap and a sewing kit with spare buttons,” she says. Whether it's freshening your scent or preserving your blowout during a quick post-landing shower, make sure you have what you need on hand, from dry shampoo to deodorant.

Keep it moving

One thing Joseph always does post-flight is fit in a little workout. “Once you land, aim to get a bit of exercise, even if it’s just a brisk walk,” she recommends. “Exercise can mobilize the extra fluid.” No puffiness here!

Well, Campari fans, I hope you're sitting down, because we've got big news.

Campari has partnered with Sweet Saba, a NYC-based designer candy brand, to create edible "cocktail rings," — the adult version of the ring pops we loved as kids.

They're not only cute, they're delicious, and their deep-orange color makes them a staple for all your fall parties. They are crafted in the same reddish-orange as Campari and sit on top of an adjustable silver band. Now, before you get too excited, while these rings have the taste of Campari, they don’t have the booze — so you’ll get the flavor but not the buzz.

While we’re already thinking this is a perfect stocking stuffer idea, we kind of don’t want to wait that long. Maybe we should start gifting them as party favors for our fall soirees? Thanksgiving dinner, anyone?

The cocktail rings are available for $62 each on the Sweet Saba website, and 10 percent of the purchase proceeds will benefit City Harvest, a nonprofit organization that takes restaurant food leftovers and distributes them to the hungry.

The Condition That Makes Delivering a Baby During Hurricanes Even More Difficult

$

Placenta accreta, a condition affecting pregnancies, has appeared frequently in recent news headlines. Kim Kardashian West announced that she and Kanye West will be using a surrogate to carry their third child due to the life-threatening issue. Kate Hudson is receiving a lot of backlash for an insensitive remark she made in Cosmopolitan’s October issue regarding C-sections (a procedure that may be medically necessary for women experiencing the condition). And, just this month, a young doctor helped walk a father in Miami through delivering his girlfriend’s placenta in the midst of Hurricane Irma. These are all examples of the impact of placenta accreta.

For the family in Miami, the weather hindered an ambulance from reaching the family, so the baby was delivered at home. But when it came time to gently tug on the placenta, it was stuck and wouldn’t come out. Dr. Kendra Anderson of Jackson Memorial Hospital was called to instruct the father, David Knight, on how to cut the cord.

Placenta accreta is one of three irregularities in which the placenta attaches too deeply into the uterine wall and can’t easily separate from the wall post-delivery. Manual attempts to detach the placenta can result in life-threatening hemorrhaging for the mother and can cause damage to the uterus and other organs during removal.

At this point, it had been 36 minutes since the baby was born. Typically, the placenta should be delivered within 30 minutes of childbirth. If it hasn’t been delivered, there’s a strong possibility that the mother has placenta accreta.

Anderson realized how severe the situation was — if Knight pulled at the cord too hard, he could invert his girlfriend’s uterus and kill her. She calmly walked Knight through massaging his girlfriend’s uterus to encourage the placenta to come out and then to put pressure on her pubic bone while gently pulling on the cord. Ultimately, the placenta was delivered successfully.

But for some women, this isn’t the case. According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, one in every 533 pregnancies resulted in placenta accreta between 1982 and 2002.

The specific cause of placenta accreta remains unknown, but according to March of Dimes, scarring from a uterine surgery or a previous cesarean delivery can add to the likelihood of developing placenta accreta. In addition, pregnant women whose placentas either partially or fully covers their cervix (a condition known as placenta previa) may also be at a higher risk of developing placenta accreta.

While placenta accreta is the most common of these irregularities, placenta increta and placenta percreta are two other severe conditions that occur when the placenta roots itself too deep into the uterine wall. With placenta increta, the placenta attaches deeper into the wall without penetrating into the muscle. Placenta percreta occurs when the placenta penetrates through the entirety of the uterine wall and attaches to another organ.

More: I had the same placenta issue as Kim Kardashian West and nearly died

To learn more about placenta accreta, be sure to check out the International Cesarean Awareness Network’s Accreta Awareness Month programs throughout October. As ICAN’s website points out, for many women, the first time they hear the word "accreta" is when they are diagnosed. But given that cases of accreta are on the rise due to high cesarean rates, chances are you will know someone in your lifetime that will face this diagnosis.

Those who have read both Fifty Shades of Grey and Grey will know that if we're going to retell things from Christian's point of view once again, then we can expect things to be even sexier and more thrilling than we previously thought. Sure, there's the risk it will feel familiar because we're essentially reading the same story again, but isn't there something even the tiniest bit thrilling about getting back into the mind of Christian Grey once more?

Do Pregnancy ‘Rules’ Really Matter?

The news is out. You're pregnant! Everyone is delighted for you... and then come the warnings. From your doctor to your mother-in-law to your neighbor's grandma — everyone has their opinion on what you should and shouldn't be doing (and drinking and eating), and they're not afraid to tell you.

More: How to "Green" Your Pregnancy

Pregnancy "rules" vary depending on where you live and are a relatively new phenomenon (my own mother, pregnant in the late '70s and early '80s, doesn't recall being given any "rules" beyond the very vague and entirely subjective "don't drink too much.")

Obviously, rules are there ostensibly to help keep pregnant people and their babies safe, but some rules are definitely more important than others. Ahead, we break the big ones down for you — and reveal how real-life moms deal with them during their own pregnancies.

1. Alcohol

The official line: Don't booze when you're pregnant. "No amount of alcohol is safe or recommended during pregnancy," says Sherry Ross, an OB-GYN and women's health expert at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

"Abstinence reigns as the prevailing wisdom because it is safe for everyone," explains Dr. Ian Tong, chief medical officer at Doctor On Demand. "But if your cultural norms dictate some alcohol consumption, you should consult a physician to receive individual guidance," he adds.

A 2015 report published in Pediatrics deemed alcohol consumption hazardous during all stages of pregnancy; however, the same report showed that 1 in 10 women still drink while pregnant. And in practice, not all doctors draw a hard line. One mom, Madeleine D., says, "My OB told me, 'Go ahead and have a glass of wine. My wife had an occasional drink with each of our kids. They're weird, but I'm pretty sure that's not why.'"

2. Smoking

Unlike alcohol, you probably won't find a doctor who'll give even occasional cigarette use the greenlight during pregnancy. "Smoking during pregnancy is a known health problem to both the fetus and the newborn," says Ross. "Risks include low birth weight, preterm labor, abruption of the placenta (placenta detaches from the uterus), sudden infant death syndrome, an increase in childhood respiratory infections and possibly learning disabilities. Risks to the mother include preterm labor, premature breaking of the membranes (water breaks), small and unhealthy placenta, miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies." Besides, pregnancy — even health in general — is just one of a myriad of reasons to quit smoking. So why not get on that, stat?

3. Caffeine

While caffeine in large quantities has been linked to miscarriage during the first trimester and "excessive" daily consumption may decrease the baby’s birth weight, the results of research remain unclear — and most doctors agree you don't have to skip your daily coffee.

"Consuming less than 200 milligrams of caffeine a day [the equivalent of a 12-ounce cup of coffee] is considered a safe amount for a growing baby," says Ross. For moms-to-be who suffer from chronic headaches during pregnancy, doctors often recommend daily caffeine consumption. "My OB told me not to give up my morning fix," says Jessica R. "He said, 'By all means, have your coffee. More than six cups isn't recommended.'" Is that much really recommended for anyone, though?

4. Herbal tea

The “rules” around herbal tea during pregnancy are murky at best. No U.S. regulation specifically addresses herbal tea, and the Food and Drug Administration doesn't regulate the safety and effectiveness of herbal products the way it does prescription drugs and even over-the-counter medicines. If clinical studies are the end-all, be-all for you, know that there's a dearth of research to confirm either the safety or risk of herbal teas during pregnancy. That said, there are probably a million moms who swear by peppermint or ginger tea as a remedy for morning sickness, so do with that information what you will. And you can always check out the American Pregnancy Association for information on what herbal teas you might want to avoid during pregnancy.

5. Fish & seafood

Certain seafood, like shark, grouper, swordfish, halibut, king mackerel and tilefish have high levels of mercury, which may cause fetal brain damage and developmental delays. To get your fish fix during pregnancy, it's best to stick to varieties thought to be low in mercury, such as shrimp, canned light tuna, scallops, oysters, squid and salmon. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says you can eat up to 12 ounces per week.

Oh, and if anyone tells you off for eating salmon nigiri during pregnancy, simply point them in the direction of the 127 million Japanese who consider eating raw fish to be a good neonatal nutrition practice. "I ate sushi all throughout my second pregnancy (my OB said it was OK) and my daughter is not only fine, but smarter than her brother — and I didn't enjoy anything good while pregnant with him," says Anna L.

6. Deli meat & soft cheeses

Deli meat, unpasteurized soft cheeses such as feta, queso blanco, queso fresco, Camembert and brie, smoked foods and raw sprouts are all possible breeding grounds for the bacteria listeriosis, which can be fatal to a growing fetus — according to Karen Wright, a practitioner at Metro Integrative Pharmacy in New York City, which specializes in wellness and fertility. However, there is a workaround if you're craving a stack of cold cuts. "Listeria is destroyed at high heat," Wright explains. "Therefore, eating reheated deli meats or pasteurized soft cheeses would not be an issue."

Of course, every culture has its own take on what foods are best avoided during pregnancy. "I ate feta cheese," admits Nina M. "I'm Greek. My grandmother lived to be 102 and had five kids. You think she didn't eat any feta while she was pregnant? Ha."

7. Raw eggs, meat & poultry

This risk of eating undercooked meat, poultry and eggs during pregnancy is salmonella bacteria; however, this one affects the mother rather than the fetus. "Salmonella weakens the mother's immune system," explains Wright. "It does not cause [direct] harm [to the fetus] like listeria, but if the mother's immune system is weak, it could affect the development of the fetus." If you do get salmonella during pregnancy, the biggest risk is dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea, which can cause low amniotic fluid and birth defects. As soon as you can keep fluids down, a good measure is to sip water every 10 minutes, which gradually rehydrates your body, says Wright. To stay safe, make sure any eggs you eat are pasteurized and meat and poultry are cooked.

8. Hot tubs

According to Ross, extremely hot temperatures can indeed be a problem during pregnancy. "Temperatures above 102 degrees F (38.9 degrees C), especially during the first six weeks of pregnancy, can cause defects to the baby’s brain and spinal cord and increase the chance of miscarriage," she says. "It’s best not to use a hot tub if you are trying to get pregnant or during the first trimester to make sure you are not putting the baby at risk for serious abnormalities — and the general rule is not to spend more than 10 minutes in a Jacuzzi that is set at 102 degrees beyond the first trimester."

That said, "Let's be clear about the difference between a Hot Tub and a hot tub,” says Dr. Katie Hicks, an OB-GYN in private practice in Massachusetts. “The first is the large shared 'spa' experience found in hotels, spas, and some rich people’s patios. Usually, these are maintained at about 108 degrees, and the hot water is constantly being replaced by more hot water," she explains, adding that "soaking in your own tub, as long as the temperature is moderate and not steaming, and you're not constantly refilling it with more hot water, is fine and soothing. In fact, we use this for pain relief in laboring mothers — the hospitals keep the water temperature below 104.”

9. Sleeping on your back

Let's face it: As much sleep as possible during pregnancy is a very good thing. Sleep whenever you can, however you can. There should be no rules about this — but unfortunately, there is one. "In general, it’s best to sleep on your right or left side during pregnancy after 20 weeks," says Ross. "If you are sleeping on your back, the growing uterus puts added pressure on the vena cava, which is the large vessel that flows into the heart. If this vessel is compressed for long periods of time, it can cause decreased blood flow to the baby. Long term, this can cause stress to the baby, increase maternal blood pressure and cause you to feel dizzy."

The obvious problem is that — pregnant or not — it's pretty hard to control your body's natural impulses during sleep. "I don't plan to sleep on my back, but I wake up at least once a night and I'm on my back," says pregnant mom Lorraine D. But don't stress about unintentional back-sleeping; if you were in any danger, you'd feel nauseated and breathless long before your baby was deprived of oxygen. Just roll onto your side and try to fall back asleep.

10. Bleaching your hair

Are you a terrible person if you just can't bear to go through your pregnancy with your roots as dark as night? Of course you're not. According to the American Pregnancy Association, research on the safety of hair bleach and dye during pregnancy is limited but suggests that the amount of dye that actually has the potential to reach the fetus is minimal. If you are worried, go for highlights, which won't apply any product directly on your scalp. Or leave any salon action until your second trimester, when your developing baby is less vulnerable.

Ultimately, like with everything else related to your health and safety during pregnancy, if you aren’t comfortable with bleaching your hair, then don’t bleach your hair. As for drinking an occasional glass of wine or a couple of cups of coffee, most doctors will tell you it’s probably safe. However, there will always be people willing to tell you — with loud voices or evil eyes — that you are putting your baby's life at risk with every sip, bath or plate of sushi. So do your research, and use your best judgment. Try not to stress (which may be even more dangerous to you and your baby than many of the above "rules"), and remember that not all risks are created equal.
