Could Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn & Diane Keaton Cameo in New First Wives Club?

Break out your praise hands emoji, because here's some news that's sure to brighten any '90s kid's day — the 1996 film First Wives Club is getting rebooted. Girls Trip writer Tracy Oliver is bringing the nostalgic classic to TV, and there's still hope Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton could cameo.

Deadline broke the news of the reboot, noting it will be moving from its classic film format into a half-hour TV series set to air on Paramount Network (which is currently Spike).

Like the film, the show will focus on a group of women who empower each other after their marriages crumble. Their closeness is born via the bonds of sisterhood... and revenge, naturally. The new series, like the original film, will be based in New York City.

Oliver took to Twitter to confirm the news and express her excitement about the project. "My mom, sis & I [loved] the hell out of this growing up! Dumb excited to be adapting for TV with a diverse cast," she gushed, adding a winking emoji.

The adaptation is obviously in its early stages, so — other than Oliver's assurance it will be diverse — the cast remains a mystery at this point. And while we can't wait to see who will be cast, the lack of information at this point leaves hope the original film's starring trio could at least cameo.

After all, remember how Ivana Trump had a guest spot in the movie as a sort of mentor to Hawn, Midler and Keaton's characters? Perhaps they, in turn, could reprise a similar role in the reboot.

Regardless, The First Wives Club will undoubtedly be brought back to life right in Oliver's highly capable hands.

Blake Lively Reveals the Powerful Reason She Agreed to Her First Nude Scene

When Blake Lively's new film, All I See Is You, hits theaters on Oct. 27, audiences will see the actress in a new light. The movie marks the first time in Lively's career that she has agreed to any nudity, and the reason she broke her own no-nudity rule is stirring.

More: Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds Had the Best Dinner Party Ever

Lively opened up about the Marc Forster-directed role in an interview with Vanity Fair, explaining that she almost didn't see the script at all. The 30-year-old actress' stance on nudity is so firm that her team assumed she wouldn't even consider a role that required a partially nude scene.

"I thought, well, he's not unmoving. Let me read it and if it's great, then I'll [talk] him out of it," Lively said of Forster. However, it was Lively, not Forster, whose perception shifted.

In the drama, Lively plays a woman who is basically blind but has her vision restored in a life-changing surgery. Her character, Gina, must then re-discover her own world and all the things in it: herself, her marriage, her sexuality.

It was in "seeing" nudity through this lens that changed Lively's mind.

"I always find nudity distracting," she told Vanity Fair of her previous point-of-view. "I'm very in love with my husband, but if there's a pair of boobs out, I'm a human being! You're like 'boobs!' It doesn't mean I'm lusting for them, [but] when there's naked boobies, you look at them."

In doing research for the role, Lively consulted with blind friends and even used blackout glasses. She also relied heavily on the input of an on-set lens technician whose life closely paralleled Lively's character. "I was really acting for her. [I would ask] is this the accurate reaction? How do you feel? If I would make her laugh, or if I would make her cry... then I knew I was doing my job," Lively said.

The highly immersive film required 19-hour work days and, yes, partial nudity. But, for Lively, "It's the performance I'm most proud of."

No, an Underwire Bra Won't Give You Cancer (& 9 Other Breast Health Myths)

0
0

Y'all, from workplace inequality to being harassed in the street, being a woman is hectic, and we have plenty of real issues we battle on a daily basis — so we certainly don't have time to be worrying about female health myths that are totally bogus. For instance, we're constantly hearing things about our breasts, most of which aren't even true. Lame.

To help you and your breasts have a long, healthy and happy life together, I went to a bona fide boob expert, Dr. Neelima Denduluri, associate chair of the US Oncology Network Breast Cancer Research Committee, to help sort out fact from fiction.

Myth: Breastfeeding will ruin your boobs

Bust-ed: It won't, Denduluri says. Your breasts will change (a lot!) with pregnancy and when your milk comes in, whether or not you decide to breastfeed. As a bonus, Denduluri says that some studies have shown that breastfeeding may protect your breasts by reducing your risk of breast cancer.

Myth: Running, jumping rope or other high-impact exercises will damage your boobs

Bust-ed: Actually, aging is what ruins your boobs! Plus, there's never been any solid research that showed that exercising makes your breasts sag or injures them. Denduluri says that getting older is the main reason the shape and appearance of your breasts change. So basically, your boobs will be ruined no matter what you do. Kidding! The real message here is that it's normal for our boobs to change as we live our lives, and exercising is one of the top things we can do to make sure those lives are healthy ones.

Myth: You'll be able to see or feel if you have breast cancer

Bust-ed: This is why we give ourselves breast exams, right? Not necessarily, Denduluri says. "A breast mass is often not found by exam," she explains. "This is why mammography is very important." But self-exams aren't pointless. Denduluri says it's important to know what your breasts normally feel and look like so you can report any changes to your doc.

More: Here’s Why Your Breasts Can Feel Lumpy One Week & Sensitive the Next

Myth: Women smaller than a C cup don't need to wear bras

Bust-ed: Nope! The only thing that determines whether you "need" a bra is whether or not you want to wear one. Larger ladies may feel more comfortable with more support, but some find bras constricting and say they actually cause neck, shoulder and back pain. Ultimately, there's no health reason to wear a bra. "Wearing a bra is a personal decision, and no cup size should limit a bra or require a bra," Denduluri says.

Myth: Underwire bras can give you cancer

Bust-ed: Where did this rumor even start? Every girl who's ever worn a bra has likely heard that bras cause cancer. The only thing bras and cancer have in common, Denduluri says, is that they're both linked with boobs. "Underwire bras are not associated with causing cancer," she says. "In fact, bras are not associated with causing cancer, irrespective of what kind."

Myth: Inverted nipples mean there's something wrong with you

Bust-ed: Some women have naturally inverted nipples, Denduluri says. So if your nipples have always been inverted, no worries. That is just how your breasts are shaped. But, she adds, if your nips suddenly turn themselves inside, it can be a sign of cancer, and you should call your doc, stat.

Myth: Gaining weight means bigger boobs

Bust-ed: I wish! "Some women gain weight in their breasts, and others are prone to distribute weight in other places, such as their abdomen, thighs," Denduluri says. "It is very individualized."

Myth: You can increase the size of your breasts with this special cream/tea/exercise

Bust-ed: Nope. No, not even that one. Not that one, either. It doesn't matter what the testimonials on the internet say (they're probably fake anyhow). Worse, many supplements have harmful ingredients that can make you sick, Denduluri says. Skip the quick fixes, and save your money.

More: Understanding the Lumps & Bumps in Your Breasts

Myth: You should sleep in a bra to prevent saggy boobs or a wrinkly chest

Bust-ed: Wearing a bra while standing or moving may help prevent some sagging or ptosis, as the pros call it. But wearing one lying down doesn't do a darn thing, Denduluri says. So sleep in a bra if it makes you more comfortable, but take it off if you're worried about cosmetics.

Dealing With the Fear & Guilt That Comes After a Major Tragedy

0
0

So many of us woke up yesterday morning and were immediately faced with the news of the largest mass shooting in U.S. history. Learning of this huge loss of life didn’t exactly make us ready to face the week ahead — in fact, a lot of people probably had the same question: How am I supposed to function and carry on like it’s a normal day after what happened in Las Vegas?

Even if we aren’t directly involved with the shooting at Mandalay Bay that left at least 58 people dead and more than 500 injured, it’s completely normal to react to the news with a mix of feeling helpless, guilty, depressed, anxious and angry. Logically, we know feeling bad about the shooting won’t actually help anyone, but we also need time to process the tragic events and not pretend it didn’t happen.

Carolyn Wagner, a licensed professional counselor and psychotherapist practicing in Wilmette, Illinois, agrees, saying, “Our lives and day need to go on as usual,” but “this should not be confused with ignoring what happened or not taking the time to think or talk about it.” Along the same lines, Tracee Dunblazier, a grief counselor, cautions that “ignoring the news or pushing away the emotion doesn't work, as it only saves the feelings to be processed for another time.”

More: What to Do If News Is a Trigger for Your Mental Health

Dr. John Santopietro, president and medical director of Silver Hill Hospital in Connecticut, was involved as a psychiatrist in the Sandy Hook shooting and has seen firsthand how people come together to survive during tragedies, as well as how devastating these events can be to a community. Unfortunately, he says that there is no formula for when someone should return to work and their usual routine after an event like the one in Las Vegas, but emphasizes the importance of watching for signs of stress in anyone who has been affected, including changes in eating and sleeping habits, major behavioral changes or depressed or anxious moods, for example.

Fear is completely normal

When something bad happens, it makes sense that it makes us afraid or anxious. In fact, Dr. John Mayer, a clinical psychologist, says that being fearful is a good psychological and emotional protective mechanism during times of danger, and it’s OK to reexamine your behavior in terms of crowds and public events and be mindful of your surroundings.

“Even if we are not directly impacted, this type of public mass tragedy does have an effect on us,” Wagner says. ”It shakes our sense of security and naturally leads us to start thinking about what it would have been like to be one of the people there or to have a loved one there. This is a normal reaction and it deserves some reflection.”

So how long is it normal to live with this fear? Dr. Nekeshia Hammond, a psychologist, says that experiencing these emotions for a few days or even a week isn’t uncommon, but if they last more than a few weeks and are to the point of affecting your ability to function in your work or family life, it may be time to seek out a mental health professional.

Dr. Melissa Flint, associate professor of clinical psychology at Midwestern University, echoes that sentiment, saying, “The most important part is that you seek help if you need it.” This can be done by calling 911 in an immediate crisis or a mental health hotline.

More3 Ways to Help the Victims of the Las Vegas Shooting

Guilt is normal too

You know that feeling where next to the tragedy everything else seems frivolous? According to Hammond and Lindsey Pratt, a psychotherapist in New York City who specializes in trauma, that’s a form of survivor’s guilt and another common reaction to the events.

“Coping with this guilt may have you questioning the senselessness of violence and feeling guilty about continuing on with the normalcy of the day-to-day,” Pratt says. “However, it's important to consider that experiencing both joy and sorrow does not in any way minimize the pain of others.”

Dunblazier explains that “guilt is the presence of unexpressed grief and heartbreak” and that expressing anguish through crying or an emotional response is a skill set and not weakness.

But why are we feeling guilty about something we had nothing to do with? Dunblazier says it’s a common experience to transfer your grief and anguish from things you can’t control — like these mass tragedies — to things you feel you are in control of, like your friends, family, work or social situations. In this case, she says it’s important to practice self-awareness by asking yourself what you’re feeling and where it originated as well as taking five minutes at the end of the day to reflect on your emotions and release them.

One thing to watch out for, says Dr. Paul Hokemeyer, an addictions therapist and certified clinical trauma professional, is destructive forms of self-medicating, specifically excessive alcohol consumption, overeating and another reckless behavior. Engaging in these will only add to your sense of hopelessness, he adds.

Getting back into a routine can help

Yes, the mere act of going about with your regular routine when a major tragedy just occurred could be the source of guilt, but it could also do you some good.

Dr. Robin Goodman, a licensed clinical psychologist and art therapist with particular expertise in trauma and bereavement, suggests balancing what it's necessary in your life to continue to do with what you can do to help others. Along the same lines, it’s important to stay engaged in some routine activities — even if you’re not at full speed.

“Recognize that doing your regular job can be helpful to recovering and maintaining perspective,” Goodman says. “Yet at the same time, it can be a time for reflection and awareness about one's life. Individuals can pay attention to these thoughts and feelings and consider what to do with them over time rather than immediately.”

Limit your media exposure

There is a fine line between staying informed and obsessively watching a video of the shooting over and over. Julie Barthels, a licensed clinical social worker in Illinois and co-author of Resilience Revolution: A Workbook on How to Stay Sane in an Insane World, says that too much media coverage “reinforced the horror of it and does not allow you the opportunity to process the emotions that come with it.”

Similarly, Hammond suggests limiting your intake of social media as well as news outlets. “If it feels like too much to process all of the details, videos and articles that emerge, be sure to take a break for your mental health,” she adds.

Avoid negative friends & family members

Whenever something bad — or good — happens, you know there are certain family members and/or friends who will have strong opinions about it and perhaps get you all riled up. There’s a time and place for those people — and this isn’t it, says Richale Reed, a therapist practicing in North Carolina. Instead, reach out to people who will help you process what happened in a constructive way.

MoreHow to Talk to Your Kids About Scary World Events

Turn thoughts & feelings into productive actions

Several of the mental health professionals suggested taking some sort of action as a way of proactively dealing with your feelings of helplessness. This can range from doing things that will help you personally to those that also impact the community. Giving blood and finding meaningful volunteer opportunities are always good options. In addition, Wagner suggests doing things like reaching out to your loved ones to let them know how much they mean to you and making an emergency plan with your family so you know how to respond should something like this happen to you.

If you would like to make a monetary contribution, a local government official in Las Vegas has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to provide relief and financial support to the victims and families of the horrific Las Vegas mass shooting.

“In these moments, finding ways to express compassion where we are able, in our spheres of influence, become the ways we can make a small impact in our worlds that feel so out of control,” Flint adds.

Why Fall Allergies Always Sneak Up on You

Pumpkin spice tissues aren’t on the market (yet), but for many of us, allergies are a seasonal ritual — as familiar as the lattes, granola crunch and, yes, even pumpkin spice lip balm that accompany the first crisp, put-you-in-the-mood-for-apple-picking days of fall.

We might think that fall should offer us a reprieve from the bursting blooms of spring and the sinus crud that often comes in with winter. However, according to Dr. Clifford Bassett, founder and medical director of Allergy and Asthma Care of New York, fall is actually quite a fertile time for allergies.

More: Is It True Your Allergies Change Every 7 Years?

“In most areas of the country, [fall] is a time of change [with] hot and humid weather easing into the cooler and drier area for the most part of the fall season," he explains. "That generally means ragweed pollen —one of the more prolific pollen producers, as one single plant may produce billions of grains — weed pollen as well as a variety of outdoor and indoor mold spores."

How fall allergies sneak up on you

And, just like that friend who wears her flip-flops well into October, certain elements of the summer — in this case, pollen spores — like to linger on even after bathing suit season ends. The symptoms of autumn allergies aren’t much different from the sneezy, sniffling, bleary-eyed, frog-throated agonies of spring allergies since the pollen and ragweed still trigger the immune system flare-up that releases decidedly un-fun body chemicals like histamines, which cause inflammation and discomfort.

More: 10 Allergy Myths, Busted

But there are apples to be picked, haunted houses to run through and many, many jackets to be modeled — so what can you do to stay sneeze-free — or at least minimize your allergies’ impact on your daily life?

Bassett recommends taking your cues from another seasonal staple, the return of football. “Your best defense is a good offense.” What exactly is a good offense? If you’re prone to allergies, going to a doctor and getting a formal allergy test is a great way to start; from there, Bassett says, you and your physician can develop a game plan that may include taking an over-the-counter nasal steroid medicine or oral antihistamines. You should also track the pollen count, and, on extremely high-pollen count days, consider eschewing that hike outdoors and hitting the indoor treadmill.

Though it’s delightful to open the windows on a cool Sunday morning, we’re not just inviting in that ephemerally crisp smell of autumn air — we’re also letting in the pollen. On the still-warm days when you’ve got to run the AC, put it on recirculate and clean out the air filters on the regular. You should shower and wash your hair every night — and don’t worry. There are plenty of pumpkin spice bath bars and shampoos to make bathing a true seasonal experience.

Bassett also recommends using a saline nasal wash to keep your sinuses clean and irrigated. There are also other more fashion-forward ways to protect yourself against pollen and ragweed. Bassett says that wearing sunglasses (especially on windy days) and hats can keep these nasty allergens out of your eyes and your hair.

More: Semen Allergies Are Real & Can Make It Harder to Conceive

Don’t let allergies keep you away from the joys of the fall — after all, that Halloween candy isn’t gonna eat itself. Building a plan with your physician and employing a few commonsense steps can make the difference between sneezing through the season and getting your pumpkin spice on for a long time to come.

Everything We Know About Scandal Season 7

Scandal's final season is right around the corner, and the days of Vermont and jam are far behind us, people.

In fact, from what we know about Season 7 so far, it's safe to say that the probability of Scandal having a happy ending is small. Very small.

Even Kerry Washington herself revealed Olivia is prepared to sacrifice everything, including and most likely Fitz, to maintain her control, "Olivia’s sitting in the highest seat," Washington told Variety in a recent interview. "Anything that jeopardizes her ability to show up for the republic is potentially a problem. Relationships are not the most important thing right now, unless that relationship serves and enhances her ability to wield her power in the ways that she needs to."

Even her relationship with Mellie will be all about that power struggle.

"There’s so much kerosene they’re both sitting on and they’re just one little match flick away from an explosion," actress Bellamy Young said.

The season will pick up 100 days into Mellie's first term as president, and the trailers are just teasing us with the play between Olivia's happy, healthy relationships and total destruction.

There are some theories that Olivia will turn out to be a lot less like Shonda Rhimes' main girl Hillary Clinton and a lot more like Donald Trump. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, as they say.

Even Papa Pope, the king of corruption, will be worried for his daughter. "I think that’s what Rowan’s big worry is. When you get that much power, morality goes out the door because you think everything you’ve done is for all of the right reasons," actor Joe Morton shared.

At least we have an entire season before the catastrophic ending that's sure to come.

In the in-between, a lot will be happening in D.C. The show is getting a host of great guest stars, including Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Jay Hernandez (Nashville) and Shaun Toub (Homeland).

It's also going to be a busy season for Cyrus as vice president since he'll pretty much just be plotting behind Mellie's back the whole time. Let's hope she doesn't go the way of James. Still too soon?

Young told Variety, "You cannot trust him even as you're looking him straight in the face. I think Mellie remains quite awake, on guard, and ready whenever she's with Cyrus. There's no greater partner in politics than Cyrus. She knows that he can lift you up to the absolute heavens, but she knows that he'll tear you down in an instant. It's making a deal with the devil, which has always been what our show's been about."

Washington, luckily, hasn't given up all hope of a happy ending for Olivia just yet. "She is going into this time and this position having been able to watch a lot of people make mistakes, and so hopefully she takes all of that wisdom with her and doesn’t walk down the same paths."

But I mean... come on. It wouldn't be Scandal without at least a few scandals.

How do you think Scandal will end the series? Will it be Vermont and jam or power and corruption?

Jared Leto's Playing Mega-Rich Playboy Hugh Hefner in a Biopic

Well, this is certainly interesting news no matter which way you slice it: Jared Leto will play Hugh Hefner in a planned biopic. News the famed method actor was confirmed to be stepping into the shoes of the Playboy mogul broke early Tuesday morning, and the casting decision is sure to be notorious for a couple of reasons. Director Brett Ratner, who was the guiding force behind Rush Hour 2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, is also set to direct this biopic about Hefner's life.

More: Jared Leto Accused of Being a Real Creep on the Set of Suicide Squad

The project is still in the super-, super-early stages of development, which only adds to the surprise this film has landed its leading star already. According to The Hollywood Reporter, who first reported the news, Ratner had his reasons for wanting Leto to play Hefner. "Jared is an old friend," Ratner explained. "When he heard I got the rights to Hef's story, he told me, 'I want to play him. I want to understand him.' And I really believe Jared can do it. He's one of the great actors of today."

There's no doubt that even though Leto has reportedly never met Hefner (there were plans to arrange a meeting through Ratner, but Hefner's health was failing at the time according to THR), there is more than enough video and print footage for Leto to study and use to craft his own version of Hefner.

The news is additionally surprising when you consider the fact that Hefner very recently died on Sept. 27 at age 91. The founder of Playboy led a colorful and controversial life, and while there have been a plethora of opinions about what kind of legacy he leaves behind, it will no doubt be interesting to see how Leto interprets the man behind the legend. Announcements of planned biopics aren't typically made so soon following the death of the subject of said biopic, so once the dust settles around the shock of this news, there will no doubt be intense curiosity about what events in Hefner's life this film will cover.

I Changed My Daughter's Name at 8 Months

0
0

My 10-year-old daughter has the best story to tell at cocktail parties (I mean, future cocktail parties — it's generally frowned upon for children to be on the cocktail circuit). She's going to tell this story about how when she was 8 months old, her parents made a surprising decision to give her an entirely new name.

That's right: For the first 8 months of her adorable little life, her name was Presley. A perfectly lovely name. But at 8 months, her parents did a crazy 180 and changed it to Summer. Also a perfectly lovely name. So why did we do it? It all goes back to the first few days after she was born — and a cheesy TV teen drama called The O.C. Yep.

More: Aquatic Names for Your Beach Baby

I had been pretty convinced my daughter was going to be a boy. Mother's intuition, right? So I didn't think much about girl names. My husband liked the name Presley and that sounded good to me — even once we learned she was, indeed, a girl.

But a few days after her birth, I started cringing every time someone used the name Presley. It wasn't that I didn't like the name. I really did. It just didn't seem like hername. She didn't seem like a Presley. But honestly, what the heck did I know? I had a 2-year-old and a newborn; I was exhausted. I soon had mastitis, and I was crying at soap commercials. I didn't exactly have my act together. I figured I would get used to the name.

Except I didn't. Six months later, I still didn't like it. I finally broke down and confessed to a friend who assured me that I wasn't crazy — although I remained a little unconvinced. And then, I finally told my husband: Our daughter's name wasn't Presley. "Huh?" he asked. "Her name isn't Presley? Then why am I calling her that? I think her name is Presley. She is Presley."

Constant debate ensued for the next two months while we tried to figure out what to do.

Meanwhile, in an effort to keep up my highbrow television habits, I was watching the super-cheesy TV show, The O.C. — and on the show, there was a character named Summer. Summer! That was my daughter's name. (Plus, I kind of love that the name comes from some now-canceled TV show rather than a Charlotte Brontë novel or something. I have always embraced my passion for bad TV.)

Somehow, I finally convinced my husband to change it. I honestly don't know how. He probably just wanted me to stop crying. And that's how our daughter became Summer.

More: Quirky Baby Boy Names (That You Can Still Spell)

Of course, this meant we had to legally change it, which they don't make easy for you in New York state. There were a lot of bureaucratic steps, and it officially took about a year. But by that time, everyone knew her as Summer — and I adored her name.

"Baby name regret," the unofficial diagnosis for that feeling you have when you look at your perfect baby and think, "Why on earth did I name her this? Am I going crazy?" is something that can happen to even the most seasoned parent. And for some reason, it brings a lot of shame. You think to yourself, "I had 9 months to come up with this. Wasn't that long enough?" But there is something about holding your baby in your arms and really sitting with that name andthat new person. A couple of days in the hospital don't always feel like enough time.

Once you have baby name regret, you may be afraid to make a change because you're worried about what family and friends will think. But I absolutely promise you: People are way too busy taking selfies and putting them on Instagram to worry about the name of your baby. Changing your baby's name will be a blip in time on their radar screen. It will go like this. "Interesting. Cherie just changed her baby's name. Huh. OK. The baby's name is now Lila. OK, I'm going to now go back to adjusting the filter on this picture of me at the beach."

And yes, there will be some time when people awkwardly don't know what to call your child (the old name or the new name or both?) and will simply refer to her as "the baby." But that's OK because she is a baby. And in time, everyone will adjust. Even your Aunt Lucy who doesn't know why young people make things so difficult. (In her day, people gave their baby a name and stuck to it, even if it was awful.)

More: It's Time to Stop the Baby-Name Shaming

That awkward time will pass, and soon you'll be left to deal with the regular old stresses of newborn-hood, like never brushing your hair or showering or sleeping or anything else you used to do. But you will likely be very relieved. Your baby will have this perfectly lovely name, maybe from some mediocre teen drama, and she will have a great story to tell at cocktail parties.

Las Vegas Blood Needs Met for Now, So Schedule Appointments in Coming Weeks

0
0

When the largest mass shooting in U.S. history resulted in at least 59 people being killed and more than 500 injured, it was a major strain on the city’s medical facilities and blood supply, and people took immediate action. But following the immediate and significant response to calls to donate blood, United Blood Services in Nevada reported yesterday that they are now able to meet the blood needs of the victims of the shootings and request that would-be donors make appointments to give blood in the weeks to come.

After Sunday’s shooting, the mayor of Las Vegas and governor of Nevada asked those in the area to give blood, the response was overwhelming — lines hundreds of people deep stretching for blocks around the three donation centers, NBC News reports. The shooting and desperate need for a large volume of blood comes a few months after Nevada experienced a blood shortage officials said was dangerously low.

Now, thanks to the outpouring of love, support and blood, the Las Vegas area is all set for donations at the moment.

More: Dealing with the Guilt & Fear That Comes After a Major Tragedy

But the supply won’t last forever. Thinking ahead to future blood needs in the community is important because blood products have a limited shelf life — 42 days for red blood cells and five days for platelets, so it must be constantly replenished, UBS said in a statement.

Rather than donating now, UBS is encouraging donors to schedule an appointment by calling 877-UBS-HERO (877-827-4376) or online at bloodhero.com. Because of the increased interest, UBS said that donors may experience extended wait times when scheduling on the phone or online.

More3 Ways to Help the Victims of the Las Vegas Shooting

“While we are in awe of the incredible outpouring of support from the hundreds of local residents and from those across the country, it’s important to note that in any situation where blood transfusions are needed, it’s the blood already on the shelf that saves lives,” UBS said in a statement. “We understand that people want to come forward now to show their support, however, to effectively manage the blood supply for patients, we are asking donors to make appointments to give blood throughout the coming weeks.”

As always, those located outside Nevada who wish to donate blood can visit the American Red Cross website and enter their zip code to find the nearest blood drive.

In his first opening monologue after the Las Vegas shooting that left 59 dead and more than 500 injured, Jimmy Kimmel struggled to hold it together. Tears ran down his face as he offered his take on the shooting, which hit him very close to home.

"Well, here we are again, in the aftermath of another terrible, inexplicable, shocking and painful tragedy, this time in Las Vegas, which happens to be my hometown," he said. "Of course, we pray for the victims and their family and friends, and we wonder why, even though there’s probably no way to ever know why a human being would do something like this to other human beings at a concert, having fun and listening to music."

He continued, "This morning, we have children without parents, fathers without sons, mothers without daughters. We lost two police officers. We lost a nurse, a special ed teacher. It’s a kind of thing that makes you want to throw up or give up. It’s too much to even process."

But Kimmel did more than just get emotional. He also made a harsh call for action to address the continued gun violence that Americans face.

"I’ve been reading comments that say this is terrible, that there’s nothing we can do about it, but I disagree with that intensely, because of course there’s something we can do about it," he said. "But we don’t, which is interesting because when someone with a beard attacks us, we tap phones, we invoke travel bans, we build walls, we take every possible precaution to make sure it doesn’t happen again. But when an American buys a gun and kills other Americans, then there’s nothing we can do about that."

More: 3 Ways to Help Victims of the Las Vegas Shooting

He continued, "Five people got shot in Lawrence, Kansas, last night. Three of them died. It didn’t even make a blip because this is just a regular part of our lives now. You know what will happen. We’ll pray for Las Vegas. Some of us will get motivated. The bills will get written. They’ll get watered down. They’ll fail. The NRA will smother it all with money and over time, we’ll get distracted and move on to the next thing. And then it will happen again."

Kimmel then turned his attention to members of Congress and the president's staff, who say this isn't the time for political talk or who vote against stricter measures for background checks, including the ones who, this very week, are debating a bill to allow the sale of gun silencers in the U.S.

"We have a major problem with gun violence in this country, and I guess they don’t care," Kimmel said, tears running down his face. "If I’m wrong about that, fine! Do something about it, because I’m sick of it. I want this to be a comedy show. I hate talking about stuff like this. I just want to laugh about things every night, but that seems to be coming increasingly difficult lately. It feels like someone has opened a window into hell. And what I’m talking about tonight, it isn’t about gun control. It’s about common sense. Common sense says no good will ever come from allowing a person to have weapons that can take down 527 Americans at a concert."

He also called out the hollow-sounding response to send "love and prayers" to Las Vegas.

"In 1980, we had a big fire at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. It was horrible. Eight-five people died. I was 13 years old. I’ll never forget a man jumped out the window. It was a terrible thing to see," he said. "And then a few months later, there was another fire at the Hilton, and five people died. So you know what they did? They changed the laws. They made major changes to the fire-safety codes, and it hasn’t happened again. Why would we approach this differently? It’s a public-safety issue, and something needs to be done already, so tell your Congress-people to do something. It’s not enough to send your love and prayers."

Tori Spelling Wants a 6th Kid, Because The Brady Bunch

0
0
If you've been waking up in a cold sweat at 3 a.m. every night, wondering, "When in the name of all things good is Tori Spelling going to give the world a sixth child?" well — you're maybe alone and maybe need to talk to someone. But hey, looks like Spelling might give the world that baby anyway just for kicks. And apparently, she has some very compelling reasons for wanting to have that sixth child:
  1. She has always liked even numbers.
  2. She has always been a fan of The Brady Bunch.
Yep. You may think we're kidding, but it turns out these fun facts about Spelling are quite motivating on the fertility front for the 90210 alum and her husband, Dean McDermott. "I do like even numbers and I was always a big fan of The Brady Bunch," Spelling explained to Us Weekly recently. "So three boys, three girls would be ideal. But we're blessed and you know, who knows?"

For the record, Spelling's mom, Candy, is not on board. She told Us last month that she has her fingers crossed her daughter is finished popping out babies — maybe because Spelling also has a penchant for adopting miniature pigs that aren't necessarily housebroken.

But Spelling is undaunted. At the L.O.L. Surprise Party! event in Hollywood last week, she also said, "We're both believers... none of our kids are actually planned. So we're believers that they choose us and when the time is right, it's right. If not, we're definitely blessed." From that quote, it's not exactly clear what Spelling and McDermott believe in, exactly, but we'll assume it's a God that rains children and miniature pigs upon people who profess their love for The Brady Bunch.

Tori S IG

Tori S IG

Whatever the case, all that vague believing has churned out quite a swarm of cute kids for Spelling and McDermott and plenty of kid pics on Spelling's Instagram feed. There's Liam, 10, Stella, 9, Hattie, 5, Finn, 5, and Beau, 6 months old. So if Spelling is truly hoping to star in a reality TV Brady Bunch revamp, she's poised for success.

How is Spelling managing her current brood with work? At the L.O.L. event, she said, "People say, 'How do you do it with 5?' I'm like, 'You don't think about it. You just do it.' There's no thinking, so I just try to make sure my kids are my first priority and work is always second, so I feel like if you always keep that in your mind and go with your heart with your family in mind, it all works out." Damn, Tori. How do you stay so chill with all those children and indoor swine?

Things haven't always been rosy for Spelling and McDermott, who managed to recover as a couple after McDermott cheated on Spelling with the most unfortunately named other woman of all time: Emily Goodhand.

But the couple is making things work, and according to Spelling, McDermott is a good "hands-on dad" — so there's that. "We're a team and we work off of each other and we work a lot together," she said at L.O.L. "So when we can work with the family like on reality and stuff, that's always the best because then we're together."

More: I'd Totally Take Tori Spelling's Marriage Advice Any Day

It is always good to work with family "on reality and stuff" in our opinion. Another suggestion from Spelling is... bed picnics? "Honestly, we like bedtime, not like bedtime, but time in bed," Spelling told Us at the event. "I heard there's amazing mattresses that are 9-feet wide. I need that because I have a huge family. Our favorite thing is to put towels on the bed. We bring up what we call a 'bed picnic' and we put on a movie and all cuddle in bed."

Not sure what the towels are for, but hey, maybe that's a pet pig thing. In the meantime, we'll keep our ears open for any news that Spelling and McDermott and all their believing, Brady Bunch and bed picnics have conjured up the even-numbered six kids they've been dreaming of.

Sandy Hook Mom Blames Congress for Las Vegas Shooting

A mother who lost her 6-year-old daughter in the brutal Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in 2012 is laying the blame of the mass shooting in Las Vegas squarely at Congress' feet.

Nelba Márquez-Greene tweeted that Congress' lack of action on gun control in recent years makes its members culpable for the at least 58 dead and 515 injured people who were shot while attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival. The murderer used automatic assault rifles to mow down the crowd below his 32nd-floor room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. This is now the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

“This is on every congressperson who said in ’13: There is simply nothing we could do,” Márquez-Greene wrote on Monday.

Márquez-Greene's voice is joined by that of Erica Lafferty, whose mother was the principal of Sandy Hook and died in the mass murder there in 2012. Lafferty said that the Las Vegas attack brings those memories all back — and makes her feel like a failure that so little change has been affected in gun control in the United States since then.

"I'm angry. I'm triggered. I'm terrified. I miss my mom," Lafferty said in a statement released on Twitter. "I hurt for her. I feel like I've failed. Mostly, I am fucking sick of this happening ALL OF THE TIME."

Kate Winslet Plays Coy About Whether She Had a Crush on Leonardo DiCaprio

It's not often the great Kate Winslet says something that makes us roll our eyes and say, "Puh-lease." She is, after all, one of the great actors of our lifetime, and generally we treat her words with the reverence that they deserve. Today, however, we learned that Winslet is actually a professional fibber, because today, she claimed that she has never had a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio. That's right — not even when they filmed Titanic together.

More: Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet Are on a BFF Vacation Right Now

"It was seven months of very intense work, we were both really very young. And luckily, and this was the fortunate thing, we never fancied each other!" she claimed in a new interview with Lorraine Kelly on a U.K. TV program. "I know that's really annoying to hear, sorry. We really never did. So it did mean that we were able to have this… be able to tease each other, which we still do, which is really amazing."

More: Kate Winslet Is Embarrassed by the Hollywood Pay Gap Conversation

How do we know Winslet is fibbing? Because every woman who possessed a pulse at the time Titanic frenzy was happening had a crush on DiCaprio. And every generation of women that has watched the movie since then because the poor things weren't lucky to be alive at the height of Titanic fever has also had a crush on DiCaprio. It is a shared human experience to have a crush on DiCaprio. No one gets to just pretend it didn't happen to them (not even Winslet!) because it literally happened to everyone.

We'll give you a moment to process the fact that Queen Kate Winslet just lied straight to all of our faces and share this nugget to help you forgive her: She thinks Titanic is basically like Mary Poppins.

"There's another generation of children who are enjoying it and loving it for the first time. It's like Mary Poppins, I like to think," she said.

Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth Posts Baby Bump — & Anti-Abortion Stance — on Instagram

Newlyweds Austin Forsyth and Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth are fueling quite the Instagram firestorm this week. Yesterday, pregnant Duggar Forsyth posted a slideshow that started innocuously enough: with a baby-bump pic. "It's already about the size of a bell pepper and weighs around half a pound!!" she wrote of her soon-to-be baby. Adorable! Hooray! Congrats! Right?

Austin and Joy Forsyth

More: 30 Times the Duggars Enraged Instagram

Well, if you click through said slideshow, you'll see that Duggar Forsyth has also tacked on an "ABORTION KILLS CHILDREN" protest pic as well as a "Life offers no guarantees but abortion offers no chances" wrinkled-baby-feet poster. Right. Because nothing tells your first child "We're so happy about your impending arrival" like an Instagram post that's all, "you'd better be grateful we didn't abort you."

Predictably, all hell broke lose in the comments thread. Fans and haters alike had plenty to say about the arbitrary anti-abortion addition. And some of them made a lot of sense.

"I love Joy and Austin...but whether or not a woman decides to abort is HER choice. Circumstances vary for every pregnancy. You have every right to your own beliefs but don't judge and condemn others for theirs."

"Just like the Duggars will never believe in birth control or treating the trans community with respect."

"I am not for abortion or against it. I think that if you become sexual[ly] active you should [bear] the consequences of it. But I understand and accept it when it happened out of a woman's control like rape. If that makes me a horrible person... then I guess I am one."

"Sitting or standing on a public street corner and holding a sign saying abortion KILLs babies makes children ask a lot of questions. Questions families might not be ready to answer yet."

"Duggars...get free money to pop out babies [and] then judge the rest of the world."

"Abortion is a serious matter, not to ever be taken lightly, but! It is up to every woman to decide. And all children being born should be wanted, loved and well taken care of."

We're not really surprised by the couple's approach to bump-sharing. After all, their Instagram fans received first word of the baby on the way via this wordy, Bible-quoting, anti-abortion post on Aug. 30.

Commenters who didn't feel like engaging in a debate on a woman's right to choose opted to question the timing of Duggar Forsyth's baby instead (since premarital sex is a major no-no for anyone with the Duggar last name). One wrote, "I will believe Joy didn't have sex before marriage if she gives birth exactly 22 weeks after this post. And if it's way before and a big baby we will know."

New Buttermilk Chicken Strips From McDonald's Sound Seriously Delicious

I grew up in a town so small there wasn't even a McDonald's (crazy, I know!). On trips to visit family, my sister and I were always most excited about one thing: our trip through the McDonald's drive-thru to get a Chicken McNuggets Happy Meal. Fried chicken and a toy? That's the good life.

Now that I'm older, my tastes are a little more refined (though I'm still known to indulge in Chicken McNuggets on a semi-regular basis, because, let's face it, they're delish). That's why I'm so excited to try McDonalds' new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders, the fried chicken option I've been waiting for.

More: Table Service at McDonald's? Yes, Please!

Buttermilk Crispy Tenders are made with 100 percent white meat chicken that's free from artificial flavors and preservatives. And because of the crispy but light breading, you'll really be able to taste the juicy meat in each bite. Each tender is fried until golden-brown, and they come in four-, six- or 10-piece counts.

I usually think of fall and early winter as the holiday season, but I definitely wouldn't mind it starting a little earlier each year. And this year, Taco Bell is making my wish come true thanks to their full-blown National Taco Day celebration on Oct. 4.

First off, they've released a holiday special, "Glen and The Magic Taco," that tells the origin story of National Taco Day. Sounds heartwarming! You can watch it while eating from your National Taco Day Gift Set, available at Taco Bell stores on Oct. 4, which consist of a "gift wrapped" Nacho Cheese, Cool Ranch, and Fiery Doritos Locos Tacos and a classic crunchy taco, all for just $5. They come in special National Taco Day Wrapping, so each bite feels a little more festive than it otherwise would.

Jason Aldean Issues Emotional Plea in Response to Las Vegas Shooting

In the wake of the horrific mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Sunday, many people have found it difficult to put into words the maelstrom of emotion they feel. Jason Aldean, who was performing at the time of the shooting, responded soon after — but in a new Instagram post, the country superstar opened up more about the senseless tragedy.

Calling for unity and compassion, Aldean shared a lengthy and vulnerable post on social media about his feelings.

"Over the last 24 hours, I have gone through lots of emotions. Scared, Anger, Heartache, Compassion and many others," Aldean said in the Instagram post. "I truly don't understand why a person would want to take the life of another. Something has changed in this country and in this world lately that is scary to see. This world is becoming the kind of place i am afraid to raise my children in. At the end of the day, we aren't Democrats or Republicans, Whites or Blacks, Men or Women. We are all humans and we are all Americans and its time to start acting like it and stand together as ONE! That is the only way we will ever get this Country to be better than it has ever been, but we have a long way to go and we have to start now. My heart aches for the Victims and their families of this Senseless act. I am so sorry for the hurt and pain everyone is feeling right now and there are no words i can say to take that pain away. Just know u all are in my heart and my prayers as we all go through this together. Time to come together and stop the hate!"

Organizers of the Route 91 Harvest festival also issued a statement on Tuesday saying they are "completely devastated" and offer their "deepest sympathies" to everyone involved. It is estimated 22,000 people were in attendance at the festival, which — in addition to Aldean — featured Jake Owen, Big & Rich, Kane Brown, the Josh Abbott Band, Tyler Reeve and Dee Jay Silver.

A Brief History of Melanie Griffith & Dakota Johnson's Mother-Daughter Relationship

0
0

You may know her best from her role as Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades franchise, but Dakota Johnson isn't new to the high-profile world of acting and ensuing celebrity. She's the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and the granddaughter of Alfred Hitchcock ingenue Tippi Hedren. She's watched firsthand how her family handles the daily hustle required of an actor and celebrity. One can only imagine that as Johnson has risen up as a prominent actor on her own merit, it's brought her closer to her family — especially Griffith, with whom her relationship has been well documented over the years.

More: 12 Great Things About Dakota Johnson That People Don't Know

On the occasion of Johnson's 28th birthday on Wednesday, we're taking a moment to really look at the special (and sometimes feisty) relationship between Johnson and Griffith. Arguably, like most mother-daughter relationships, things don't go smoothly 100 percent of the time. But if you follow along closely enough, you'll see that these two are about as close as you can get and are endlessly supportive of one another.

Back in 2000, Johnson attended the Golden Globes with Griffith and her then-husband, actor Antonio Banderas. It's so sweet to see Johnson, only 10 at the time, act as her mom's date for the special evening. In the clip, her nerves come through a little bit as she chats about how she chose her dress for the night, but watching her connect with her mother so easily makes it clear that these two are close.

Of course, the mother and daughter had a chance to cheer each other on yet again at the Golden Globes in 2006. Whereas in 2000, Johnson was there to support her mother, Griffith returned the kindness six years later as she presented Johnson to the Golden Globes crowd.

Back in 2012, both Johnson and Griffith found themselves on network television: Johnson was starring on the short-lived sitcom Ben & Kate, and Griffith had a guest role on Raising Hope. Considering that Raising Hope aired right after Ben & Kate and in light of the fact that these actors are related, Fox saw fit to put together a little interview montage where both women get to talk about how much they love to work side-by-side (sorta). It's pretty easy to see just how much they support each other.

At the 2015 Oscars

Of course, not everything is smooth sailing. One of the more notable bumpy moments in Johnson and Griffith's public relationship happened at the 2015 Oscars. When asked by Good Morning America reporter Lara Spencer if she would ever watch her daughter in Fifty Shades of Grey, Griffiths demurred with a simple "I don't think so." The two went back and forth a little, verbally sparring about whether or not Griffith would actually watch her daughter in the racy film. However, if you are half of a mother-daughter duo, then you'll recognize this as just a typical interaction between moms and their daughters rather than a sign that these two don't really get along.

Over on Griffith's Instagram account, you can see that she is totally her daughter's biggest cheerleader. Even though they have had their bumpy patches, little moments like this one, where Griffith celebrates her daughter, kinda make you forget about the low points, right?

To date, Griffith and Johnson remain close and content in their friendship and as mother and daughter. Without a doubt, it's clear their bond is a special one.
