4 Times Elaine Benes Was a Champion for Women's Health

What is there left to say about Elaine Benes, the iconic Seinfeld character brought to life by Julia Louis-Dreyfus? She was smart and sassy, and aside from hanging around with a group of man-children, pretty much had her act together.

In a show revolving around the lives of men, Elaine still managed to raise several important women’s health issues throughout the sitcom’s nine-season run. Here are a few of the most memorable moments.

She’s vocal & passionate about birth control

Elaine never hid the fact that she enjoyed sex. Even if it took her many years before she was able to have an orgasm, she still chose to engage in the act and wasn’t shy about talking about her birth-control methods of choice. Of course, there’s the Today Sponge. As someone entrenched in women’s sexual and reproductive health, I can say, hand on my heart, that I have not heard of anyone using the sponge outside of this episode of Seinfeld. But Elaine — she’s definitely a fan. When she found out from Kramer — inexplicably the messenger of crucial sexual health information — that the sponge was going off the market, she made it her mission to stockpile as many as she could. Given they were a nonrenewable resource, she made sure to assess her gentlemen friends in order to determine whether or not they were “spongeworthy.”

But this isn’t Elaine’s only discussion of contraception. In another episode, she describes how her diaphragm falls out of her bag — repeating the word to great comedic effect and making Jerry’s virgin girlfriend uncomfortable in the process.

While we’re on the subject, Elaine is also not shy about letting her friends know about the importance of female sexual pleasure and orgasms, but that’s a conversation for another day.

She doesn’t want kids, & she’s not afraid to say it

A lot has changed since Seinfeld was on the air, including a wider conversation about women’s decisions to become parents. Before people like Jennifer Aniston were talking about their choice to opt out of motherhood, Elaine was speaking for all of us non-mothers-to-be. When her friend tells her that she’s “gotta have a baaaaaby,” Elaine quickly changes the subject to a piece of whitefish she ordered the other day.

Elaine tells Jerry her friends “act as if having a baby takes some kind of talent.” Jerry immediately jumps to the conclusion that Elaine must want to have a baby, to which she responds, “Why? Because I can?” After meeting her future beau (and Bizarro Jerry), Kevin, Elaine says that having a baby has “been done to death.” She’s not wrong.

She tackles the “women are difficult” stereotype

In another episode, Elaine goes to her doctor because of a rash, sneaks a peek at her medical chart and finds out that she has been labeled “difficult” by her health care providers. The more she asks about it and protests, the worse her chart write-up gets. While this made for an entertaining premise for a sitcom plotline, it’s a very real problem that so many women face, both in and out of the doctor’s office. The minute we open our mouths to express an opinion or even ask a question, we’re labeled as “difficult.” Elaine was ahead of the curve pointing that out.

She gets real about toilet seat germs

When Elaine finds out that she only shares her office bathroom with one other woman and that her colleague still uses toilet seat covers, Elaine gets offended. She likens it to using toilet seat covers if you lived with a roommate. In this case, Elaine even has science on her side: Most healthy people won’t get sick from sitting on an uncovered shared toilet seat.

More: Paper-Lining Toilet Seats: A Match Made in Heaven or a Waste of Time?

This episode also touches on slut-shaming; the reason Elaine’s co-worker covers the seat and is afraid of Elaine’s germs is she thinks Elaine enjoys the company of numerous men. This implies that she’s afraid of catching herpes or some sort of STI from the shared toilet seat or the stapler or telephone receiver Elaine rubbed on her (clothed) butt.

Want to hear more about Elaine’s place in women’s health pop culture and happen to live or be in New York City on Wednesday, Sept. 13? Great news — I’m hosting event along with Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, New York Times best-selling author of Seinfeldia when we’ll be doing just that! Elaine Benes Appreciation Night: A Planned Parenthood Benefit will take place at the Spreadhouse Cafe on the Lower East Side at 7:30 p.m. Please book tickets now, as the venue has limited capacity.

Can You Get Addicted to Sexting?

As a divorced woman in her 40s who recently started dating again, I've found myself in unfamiliar territory. Not only is dating much different when you have kids, animals and a mortgage to take care of, the last time I was "out there," texting wasn't a thing.

So when I began exclusively dating a very handsome single dad who made me feel sexy for the first time in a long while, things started getting pretty hot in our text messages.

Since we both had kids we couldn't rush off to meet whenever we wanted, and we both admitted to not knowing if we'd ever find someone who felt passionate about us at this point in our lives. Resorting to steamy conversations while our kids were sleeping soundly in bed helped scratch the itch, so to speak. And it was so exhilarating.

More: No, Anal Sex Is Not the Solution to This Medical Problem

A few weeks into our relationship, we started sending flirty texts. One thing led to another, and we were chatting for hours on the nights we couldn't be together. We got very descriptive about what we wanted to do to each other when we did meet up again, and it was hot. So hot in fact, I started to feel like I couldn't get enough. I couldn't wait for night to come so we could have our "sessions" and I started sending him steamy messages during the day too to get my fix.

The rush, the excitement, the sheer pleasure of feeling so attracted to someone and not holding back my deepest fantasies and hearing theirs began consuming me. Before I knew it, I wanted to sext with this man all the time. Some of the things we said to each other seemed shocking at first, but then became diluted. This made us both get sexier, send pictures to each other and discuss our deepest sexual fantasies; things we'd never dare share with anyone else.

More: This Is the Key to Becoming a More Positive Person

And if one of us had a night we couldn't sext it up, I began to feel strange. Not quite sad, but almost bored with a normal night in front of the television relaxing or going out with friends.

I'd never dabbled in anything like this before and was beginning to wonder if I was getting addicted. I certainly didn't feel comfortable admitting my new habit to anyone else.

I began to wonder if something was wrong with me. I've never been a promiscuous person. I'd always had monogamous relationships even though I found myself getting bored in the bedroom after a few months. Was this what I needed? To hide behind my phone and ask for things I wanted sexually because I was too shy to ask for them in person?

Did getting this kind of attention and validation from a man I was deeply attracted to do something for my self-esteem that had never been done before?

The arousing messages made me extremely excited while they were being exchanged, but then they were followed by shame and a little guilt, even though we were in a monogamous relationship with each other.

The fact that I began to feel like I needed it worried me. So I asked him if he felt the same way. He agreed that sexting was on his mind all the time and it was now one of his favorite things to do. Everything else seemed dull in comparison and he was ecstatic I was so into it because it seemed to be filling a need in him as well.

Which made me wonder. Can sexting be addictive?

Dr. Lisa Strohman, a clinical psychologist and founder of Digital Citizen Academy, told SheKnows we form an addiction when we crave something and lose control over its use. "When we are no longer able to step away and it begins to impact relationships, work, self-esteem and emotional stability, the vicious cycle of addiction begins," she says.

More: Are At-Home STI Tests the Future of Sexual Health?

Strohman says sexting can be addictive: "Our brains register all pleasure in the same way. It doesn’t matter whether it's a drug, sexual encounter, monetary reward or a sext. Pleasure is actually our interpretation or the feeling we get when the neurotransmitter dopamine is released into our system. Dopamine release is so consistently tied with pleasure that neuroscientists refer to the region as the brain’s pleasure center," she explains.

It makes perfect sense. When something feels good, you want to do more of it, even though you are aware it has highjacked your brain and there is risk involved.

Strohman warns behaviors such as gambling, shopping and sexting and other "process addictions" can become just as harmful as drugs and drinking. And if sexting is coming in the way or your normal life or productivity at work or makes you lose interest in all other hobbies or interferes with other relationships, (like canceling plans so you can sit home and sext), it's time to stop and reach out for medical help if necessary.

As for me and my partner, we decided to hold off on sexting for now. It was starting to affect too many areas in our lives, and we could see ourselves wanting to do nothing else. Maybe we will bring it back if we are still together in a few years and our sex life needs some spicing up, but for now, we are both satisfied with saving the real thing for when we see each other instead of spending our evenings with our necks bent over our iPhones.

How to Know When It's Time to Walk Away From a Friendship

$
0
0

Look, nobody is perfect, and it's so important that we embrace and love the flaws in everyone around us. But there is a point when a relationship is so flawed that it no longer serves us and can actually suck the joy right out of life. Yes, we're supposed to stick with our friends through thick and thin — however, there does come a time in some relationships when it's better to walk away. So how are you supposed to know when it's that time?

Acknowledging an unhealthy friendship is the first step in claiming our own inner peace and happiness. The second step is to find the courage to keep a healthy distance. Toxicity spreads like an infection, and if we aren't careful — it can change us for the worse.

If any of your friends have the following 11 traits, then honey, it's time to reassess your idea of what friendship actually means.

1. They always have a problem with someone

Not a day goes by that your friend doesn’t have an issue with another person — whether it’s the clerk at the grocery store, her coworker, her boyfriend or her neighbor. Be wary of someone that can’t get along with others. It's a pattern that is likely to repeat itself and you may be the next one on their shit list.

More: The Real Reason You Procrastinate — & How to Fix It

2. Every potential solution to their problem is met with an excuse

If every suggestion you offer your friend is met with a new dilemma, that’s a red flag that you are dealing with a toxic person. Healthy people set out to fix their issues. Toxic people feed off turmoil and chaos. Don’t get swept up in their endless cycle of unresolved problems.

3. They speak badly about other people

Pay close attention to how your friend talks about others. There is a good chance they are talking to others about you in the same way. Toxic people are often highly negative individuals who regularly gossip and badmouth others for their own benefit.

4. They pressure you to do things you don’t feel comfortable doing

Misery loves company, and toxic people love to get others to misbehave with them. If you find yourself participating in activities that you don’t like and would never do on your own, consider that a clear sign you’re in an unhealthy friendship.

5. You get anxious being with them in social settings

Whether you’re fearful they will get into a fight with your friends or embarrass you in front of your boss, toxic people don’t respect boundaries or practice situational awareness. Trust your gut and stop inviting them (or accepting their invitations) out.

More: Tia Mowry on Meditation, Endometriosis & the Importance of Female Friends

6. They have a history of broken friendships and family relationships

The greatest predictor of the future is the past. If your friend has a reputation for failed relationships, it’s an indicator that your relationship may be headed for demolition as well.

7. Discussions are always about them — never you

Great friendships are mutually beneficial. You share your life, they share theirs and everyone wins. When you’re friends with someone who has a poisonous personality, they tend to dominate every conversation and make everything about themselves.

8. You’re afraid of making them mad at you

Toxic people can be vindictive. If they’ve royally screwed someone who they once called a friend, you know they could potentially do the same thing to you. A friendship should never be based on the fear of revenge.

9. They’re flaky

The only time they’re concerned about is their own. They make plans and don’t show, or if they do come, they’re always late. If you can’t rely on your friend to be there when they say they will be, then you can’t really rely on them for other things either.

10. They’re friends with your enemies

Nothing is a bigger betrayal than when a so-called friend is buddy-buddy with someone who has hurt you. While it is possible to be acquainted and even friendly towards people our friends don't like (that’s what grown-ups do) there is a clear friendship line that is crossed when someone who says they are your friend is also hanging out with your enemy.

11. You feel emotionally or even physically sick after spending time with them

Friendships are supposed to be easy. By their very nature they are meant to make us happier. If you find that spending time with a particular friend leaves you emotionally drained, or even physically spent, it’s time to reassess the relationship. Skip the guaranteed headache and search for a friend that leaves you smiling, laughing and eager to see them again tomorrow.

People love celebrity entrepreneurs, but celebrity mompreneurs are possibly our favorites. Quite a few stars from film, television and music have founded businesses based on their experiences as mothers, combining two rewarding experiences into one. The next time you're looking for some inspiration, check out these celebrities who are making "having it all" look easy.

Jessica Alba

Doesn't everyone know about The Honest Company at this point? The brand, owned by Jessica Alba, touts eco-friendly products. While it has been at the center of a few controversies, no one can say it hasn’t been successful.

Madonna

The singer wants to inspire creative dress in a material world with her Material Girl clothing line. Even more inspiring is the fact that the business is a collaboration between mom Madonna and her daughter, 20-year-old Lourdes.

Jessica Biel

Biel's Au Fudge is a high-end, kid-friendly dining establishment. The menu features pasta, burgers and grilled cheese with an organic twist, and there’s a space for kids to play as well.

Julianne Moore

This actress is also a successful author; she created the Freckleface Strawberry book series and corresponding app. The series promotes the beauty of differences — like the red hair and freckles Moore and her daughter have in common.

Tori Spelling

With five children, Tori Spelling is acutely aware of what kids need — especially when it comes to clothing. Spelling teamed up with JCPenney to relaunch her previous clothing line, Little Maven, refocused on babies and toddlers.

Ali Landry

With a less tangible (but potentially even more helpful) product, Ali Landry is working on a review site for baby products. The actor and model also has a reality show with the SpokesMoms and Born by Moms brands.

Heidi Klum

This model, mom and host of Project Runway isn’t at a loss for things to do. Despite this, her passion for motherhood and expertise in fashion inform a natural collaboration with Babies R Us for Truly Scrumptious, which features clothes, room decor, bedding and furniture.

Melissa Joan Hart

Often, working parents create businesses out of the frustration of not being able to find what they want or need. This is no different for celebrities, and Melissa Joan Hart’s King of Harts clothing line was born out of this exact scenario. Focusing on functionality, this clothing line for young boys is expanding to girls’ clothing as well.

Soleil Moon Frye

The Punky Brewster child star has built several businesses, including an app, party kits and a children’s clothing company. Moonfrye, P.S. XO and The Little Seed are all infused with creativity and apparently inspired by her three children.

Gwen Stefani

Fashion maven Gwen Stefani is no stranger to producing successful clothing and accessory lines. On the heels of her Harajuku Girls brand, this mom is launching a Harajuku mini-line for all genders with Target, encouraging children to express their individuality and style.

Jessica Simpson

Along with her sister Ashlee, who is also a mom, Jessica Simpson has launched a self-titled collection for girls. With multiple successful clothing and shoe lines, who knows what she’ll come up with next?

Haylie Duff

Clothing lines are a popular celebrity side hustle, but Duff's stands out thanks to its ability to mix and match pieces. Her Little Moon Society focuses on comfortable designs and materials that allow for movement and growth.

J.K. Rowling

While this mom wasn’t always famous, boy has she hit the big time. With news of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child coming to Broadway, it seems like nothing will stop Rowling from building on the success of the Harry Potter franchise.

How the Internet Really Felt About It on Opening Weekend

$

The highly anticipated remake of Stephen King's clown-centric horror novel, It, is finally here. But did the movie actually live up to all the hype? And how did it stand up to the original movie, released in the '90s?

The original It is a horror movie classic, and remaking it was a bold move. It's fair to say fans have so many nostalgic feelings about the original, it was tough to know how they would feel about a remake. But in 2017, we're all fans of nostalgia, and remakes of Full HouseGilmore Girls and other classic shows and movies have only delighted die-hard fans of the originals. So why not go for an It remake that looks even more spine-tingling and unnerving than the original?

The only way to judge the success of the It remake right now is to either see it or check out the reviews floating around on the internet. The internet is full of opinions about this, and so are the pros reviewing it.

In case you forgot how freaking scary it looked like it was going to be and what also influenced the critics who reviewed It, here's the trailer to refresh your memory:

Official trailer for Stephen King's IT

Now, for the fun part: here's what the critics had to say about It.

Obviously, the internet had mixed reactions

The internet can't agree on anything, ever, so if you're just scrolling through Twitter, you're going to get a mix of people who thought It was the most terrifying thing they'd ever seen, people who thought it was more boring than watching paint dry and everything in between.

You get the idea. For every tweet saying It was scary, there's one saying it was funny. That's just the nature of horror movies. Some people are freaked out by them, and others laugh all the way through.

Professional reviewers were also a mixed bag

As far as the professional reviews go, there was consensus on some things, but not others. The old version of It was set in the 1950s, so the new version got moved to the 1980s. Some thought that was a good idea, because the '80s are more familiar to many of the people watching the film, and it allowed for references to nostalgic things like Michael Jackson and New Kids on the Block. Others thought it erased the innocence that came with the idyllic 1950s small-town setting.

Some also thought the length of the movie (a little over two hours) forced the timing to be a little off in places. As TheWrap put it, "Horror is like comedy in that timing is everything. If you hold a shot too long or for too short a time, the image will no longer have the power to scare us. Muschietti doesn't quite get this balance right when he first reveals Skarsgård's Pennywise in a storm drain. It feels as if the shots need to be held slightly longer for the full sense of dread to be captured, but Muschietti does not have time to linger here."

And The Hollywood Reporter wanted the scary scenes to tie together better, creating a more cohesive sense of terror for the audience throughout the entire movie: "Pennywise, we learn, is a shapeshifter who can take on whatever form is most frightening to his victim. And the film gets right into those hauntings, with a series of sequences in which, targeted when each is alone, the kids seemingly hallucinate horrible things. Though effective individually, the scenes don't build upon each other to fill us with dread."

More: Scary Movies: Curl Up With These Stephen King Classics

But the pros agreed on some things

Almost every review agrees: The movie's core group of stars, a gang of young teen outcasts who call themselves the Losers' Club, is exceptionally well cast in the remake. As Polygon put it, "The camaraderie among the cast of teen actors who deliver fantastic performances as members of the Losers' Club keeps the movie feeling so invigorating minute after minute. There's an enormous amount of pressure on these teens to make the audience care about their characters. Without the Losers' Club, IT doesn't have anyone to root for. Each individual performance stands on its own and contributes to the most important quality the film succeeds on: its ability to endear."

A lot of reviews also seemed to love Bill Skarsgård as creepy clown Pennywise.

"As Pennywise, the deeply spooky spectre who appears in the guise of the teens' greatest fears, Skarsgård is icily menacing, the character's evil eyes freezing the audience in its tracks," Screen International's review reads. "Mostly appearing as a creepy clown, Skarsgård taps into the disturbing juxtaposition of frivolity and derangement that many people associate with this common children’s entertainer."

Most seem to also agree that the ending straight-up sucked

Caution — spoilers ahead!

Are special effects ruining horror movies? A lot of It's reviews seem to kind of allude to that, especially when they talk about the ending, which is basically the Losers' Club battling It as a giant CGI monster. After all the slowly building creepiness of the rest of the movie, the final scenes feel a little too thriller and not enough horror.

"As creature design has become easier and more elaborate, thanks to digital techniques, it has also become less imaginative," the New York Times writes. "Movie monsters resemble one another more and more, and movies of distinct genres feel increasingly trapped within the expected. The climactic sequence of IT sacrifices horror-movie creepiness for action-movie bombast, staging a big fight in a cavernous space. We might as well be looking at superheroes."

More: Let's Brush Up on Your It Trivia Before the New Movie Drops

It isn't an award winner, but it's a lot of fun

Despite all the mixed reviews, It delivers on what horror movies are supposed to deliver on: It's creepy at times, funny at times, solidly entertaining and well worth the price of a ticket. It's probably not going to be up for any Oscars or anything, but you should probably see it anyway, especially if you're a fan of horror movies or Stephen King.

Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s First Promo for The Bachelor Season 22 Is Already Here

If you're still salty Peter Kraus wasn't tapped to be the next Bachelor, you might not be too pumped to hear that ABC just revealed the inaugural promo for Season 22 with Arie Luyendyk Jr. (that was quick, right?!). But, hey, just think of this as your first chance to see what all the fuss is about.

More: Here's Why ABC Cast Arie Luyendyk Jr., a Surprise Choice, as the Next Bachelor

While the teaser trailer seems to be fast-tracked, ABC is all about surprises these days. After all, it was only a week ago the network threw Bachelor Nation for a big loop by announcing Luyendyk would be in the driver's seat this season.

Many fans, of course, were gunning for Kraus, a contestant on the most recent season of The Bachelorette with Rachel Lindsay. While host Chris Harrison insists Kraus was in the running up until the last minute, the timing simply wasn't right. On the plus side, Harrison also hinted that Kraus could very well be a future Bachelor, so that's something.

For Season 22, though, ABC opted for Luyendyk — the 35-year-old race car-driving runner-up from Emily Maynard's season of The Bachelorette.

Producers are clearly keeping their fingers crossed in the hope that fans will fall in line with their surprising choice, especially since it's been five years since Luyendyk appeared on screen. And judging by the comments he made on Good Morning America, Luyendyk was just as surprised as the next person that he was chosen for the job.

"I was a little skeptical because we'd been in talks for a few years about doing it, so I just kind of went into it with an open heart, an open mind. It just hit me that yeah, I'm here," he revealed.

At only 16 seconds long, the new teaser trailer doesn't tell us much, but it does play up Luyendyk's reputation as being the "best kisser of all time" (aka the Kissing Bandit). It also promises hearts will race, which is surely just the first of many race car-related puns that will pile up this season.

Meghan Markle & Princess Diana Had the Same Makeup Artist for Vanity Fair Photos

Thanks to a lovely bit of Brit arm candy by the name of Prince Harry, Suits actress Meghan Markle stays in the headlines these days. And surely the fact that the makeup artist on her October Vanity Fair cover shoot was the same makeup artist used by Princess Diana for her own Vanity Fair shoot will do little to squelch the rumors that Markle will soon be royalty herself.

More: Meghan Markle Is Officially a Part of Prince Harry's Royal Squad

Of course, the interview made waves on its own — opening up for the first time about her relationship with Harry, Markle didn't hold back. Asked how she deals with all of the hype, she told the magazine, "We're two people who are really happy and in love."

As if that wasn't enough to set the tongues of royal family fans wagging, a seemingly innocuous Instagram post shared over the weekend revealed that Markle and Princess Diana's Vanity Fair photo shoots shared one key element: a makeup artist.

More: The Queen Reportedly Grants Prince Harry Permission to Wed

The makeup artist's name is Mary Greenwell, and she didn't just work with Diana on her Vanity Fair cover shoot. She was also the makeup artist for the princess' 1991 Vogue cover. Her other high-profile clientele over the years has included supermodels such as Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell.

On Sept. 7, Greenwell featured Markle's Vanity Fair photos to her Insta, calling the occasion "such a lovely day."

Was this a case of royal coincidence? Or did the magazine mastermind the matching makeup artist? Is it possible Markle did the research and made the request herself? It's anybody's guess. Still, our royal engagement-loving hearts are choosing to believe Markle's makeup artist choice was a little nod to Harry's late mother.

As meet-cutes go, though, it wasn't exactly love at first sight. Kunis and Kutcher have both confessed they initially looked at each other in a little-sister-big-brother kind of way. They remained friends, however, and obviously realized their feelings for each other evolved over time — the couple married in 2015 and, in addition to son Dimitri, have a 2-year-old daughter named Wyatt.

There Might Be a New Way to Prevent Birth Defects & Miscarriages

A study has revealed a new prevention tool for miscarriages and birth defects: a vitamin. Scientists are thrilled to discover two outcomes from one study at the Victor Chang Institute in Sydney. The “double breakthrough” found that taking vitamin B3 while pregnant can prevent miscarriages and birth defects.

“It’s rare that you find a cause and a prevention in the same study. And the prevention is so simple, it’s a vitamin,” said Professor Sally Dunwoodie to BBC.

Approximately 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, and 7.9 million babies are born with a birth defect worldwide.

More: These Household Products Could Cause Birth Defects

Vitamin B3, or niacin, is a water-soluble vitamin that can be found in meat, tuna fish, seeds, mushrooms and various other common foods. In addition to pregnancy benefits, vitamin B3 aids in other common health problems. The vitamin is important for the cardiovascular system and metabolism. It balances blood cholesterol and brain functions.

A deficiency of B3 can come in the form of fatigue, memory loss, depression, headache, diarrhea and skin problems. According to Healthline, the recommended dose of B3 is 16 milligrams for men and 14 milligrams for women per day.

The researchers for the study looked at the DNA of four families who had suffered from miscarriages or birth defects. Certain defects included heart, kidney, vertebrae and cleft palate problems. The findings found two genes that caused deficiencies in the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide molecule, which is vital for development and generation of organs.

A 2010 study found that women who did not use a multivitamin during pregnancy had low dietary intakes of folate, B3, riboflavin, B12 and vitamins A and E.

Dunwoodie took the gene mutations and replicated them in a study on mice. She wanted to look into the reversal of this deficiency utilizing the vitamin B3 on pregnant mothers. By boosting NAD, miscarriages and birth defects can be completely prevented. She says, “It bypasses the genetic problem.”

She explains, “We’re not all the same in how we absorb nutrients,” which includes characteristics for body mass index and diabetes. However, the results are a beginning to understanding issues with pregnancy and mortality. Dunwoodie suggests that women take a pregnancy-specific multivitamin, where 18 milligrams of vitamin B3 is included in the capsule.

Nevertheless, this study doesn’t address all problems that pregnant women experience. While pregnant women might be deficient in vitamin B3, the doses utilized in the research were “10 times the recommended daily doses for supplementation in women,” explains Dr. Katie Morris, an expert at the University of Birmingham. Researchers are unaware of the side effects of high doses, which could create various other complications that are unknown as of now.

The breakthrough study does provide a better understanding of how scientists can advise potential parents. With 6 percent of babies and 20 percent of pregnancies affected by birth defects and miscarriages worldwide, this could be a possible prevention in the near future.

9 Ways Having ADHD Affects Relationships (for Better & for Worse!)

Being in a relationship is hard, but throw in dealing with ADHD, and it can seem downright impossible. It makes sense — ADHD is a condition that makes it difficult to give anything your full attention, something relationships usually need a ton of to grow and thrive. But despite the difficulties it may present, many adults with ADHD do find themselves in successful partnerships — though not without a few bumps and hurdles along the way.

So how do they do it, and what are some of the challenges they face on the road to love (you know, aside from the everyday challenges they face right along with the rest of us)? I took to the trusty internet to find people who were willing to share their stories. Here's what they had to say about the ways ADHD affects their relationships — for better or for worse.

1. It starts off great

"Generally in relationships, I've found that significant others love me at first. They like what they call my spontaneity. Eventually, the fact that I jump from task to task faster than most people makes my significant others feel lesser. Eventually, I find people get tired of jumping around the way my thoughts do and it turns to resentment and annoyance." — Shelly I.

2. It makes it easier to get out there

"ADHD has affected my relationships in many positive ways, one being the constant urge to be active, which over the years has encouraged me to socialize more and push myself into the world of unknown possibilities... I often wonder if I have inadvertently pulled people into my life that do not have ADHD in an effort to level me out and reel me in when needed." — Emily H.

More: Why My Daughter Needs to See Me Fail at Managing My ADHD

3. There's a learning curve

"There’s nothing quite like being courted by someone with ADHD, so in the beginning, hyper-focus can be an incredible boost to any new relationship. Over time, however, when the relationship is no longer new and shiny, it can be hard not to take it personally when your partner gets easily distracted or hyper-focused on other things. My husband and I both manage ADHD in our lives, and we’ve learned to navigate that with good communication and (mostly) without taking things too personally. But I have to say, in the early years, before we understood what we were dealing with, it was responsible for a lot of tears and arguments."  — Elaine Taylor-Klaus

4. It can help strike a balance

"My husband and I have had a small business together for over 25 years, and we're a great team. We've come to realize that my having ADHD means that I can change directions at a moment's notice and that I'm spectacularly good at 'flying by the seat of my pants.' He's a planner, so having to make a change on the spur of the moment drives him crazy. Once we both realized that, it's made life a lot easier. I try to always remember that deviating from the plan makes him uncomfortable, and he relies on me when we have to make a quick decision. It's a good combination." — Ari T.

5. It takes patience

"I have learned that I can’t have romantic relationships with people who are not patient. My past relationships did not go well because my partners were often frustrated with me, and I rarely responded well to their frustrations. This always created conflict and negative outcomes and was a huge contributor to them becoming my exes. You see, with ADHD, sometimes I react slowly and other times I react too quickly or act on emotions too quickly or begin reacting verbally and physically before I have processed what I am reacting to. With my husband, he knew up front I had ADHD, and for the most part is always patient and has loved me and appreciated me for these differences, which has allowed me to feel relaxed and safe... Without his patience, we would not have the amazing marriage that we do." — Maclain C.

6. Partners may feel neglected

"ADHD affects my ability to focus and stay engaged, which can make my partner feel that I am not interested in areas of his life that are important to him. Often, my lack of focus can also make him feel as though I am not paying attention to important details in his life or that he is simply not a priority." — Arlene T.

More: I Used to Joke That I Was "So ADD," & Then a Doctor Told Me It Was True

7. It might bring the fun

"I definitely add spontaneity and fun to most relationships, including the one with my husband. I am able to help him think outside the box and push him beyond his comfort zone. At the same time, I have a tendency to leave cabinets and drawers open. I have been told that I have little Amy piles all around the house. I think he does a lot of cleaning up after me, which can be frustrating." — Amy S.

8. You have to work for it

"I’ve learned to try harder to make relationships work. ADHD often gets in the way, so it takes more effort to stay connected and work through issues." — Terry M.

9. But the right partner is out there

"He's usually pretty good at recognizing my stress, giving gentle reminders or even pitching in where I fall short..." — Emily W.

7 Reasons All Women Should Watch Broad City

After a long hiatus, Season 4 of Comedy Central’s hilarious female-centric comedy Broad City will be blessing all of our screens again on Wednesday. If you haven’t already fallen in love with the antics of Abbi Abrams and Ilana Wexler (played by showrunners and creators Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer), it’s time you did. With three fantastic seasons under their belts already, Jacobson and Glazer are undoubtedly sitting proudly at the top of the TV comedy game, only adding to the ever-growing list of awesome lady-centric shows on the air right now, like The Mindy ProjectGrace and Frankie and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

More: If You're Not Watching Broad City, You're Missing Out. Here's Why.

With quick wit, a refusal to shy away from hot-button issues and strong feminist storylines, Broad City is must-watch TV for all women, young and old. If you haven’t already seen the first three seasons, here are seven reasons why you should get binging before the Season 4 premiere.

1. It's one of the funniest shows on TV

Before we can even touch on all of the awesome feminist moments from the first three seasons of Broad City, we need to talk about how undeniably hilarious this show is. It’s an indisputable fact that Jacobson and Glazer are two of the funniest ladies on TV right now. Take, for example, the moment Ilana ignored her seriously dangerous shellfish allergy at her birthday dinner:

Broad City Ilana Shellfish

Or when we found out about Abbi’s jazzy alter ego, Val:

Broad City Val Reveal

Honestly, there's nothing like it.

2. Abbi and Ilana are like a modern-day Lucy and Ethel

Broad City Need More Friends

Part of what makes Abbi and Ilana such great characters is their perfect chemistry on screen, which is reminiscent of the relationship Lucy and Ethel had on I Love Lucy. It’s hard not to compare them to the iconic duo, especially since one of them is wacky and free-spirited (Ilana/Lucy) and the other is more level-headed (Abbi/Ethel). Some parallels just draw themselves!

MoreThe Best Female BFFs in Film & TV

3. They are sex-positive

One of the best things about Broad City is the show's insistence on normalizing the sexuality of young women, something that is often either fetishized or demonized. Both Abbi and Ilana are sexually active, and they aren’t shy about talking and joking about their sex lives. For example, Abbi’s new experience using sex toys with her cute neighbor Jeremy in Season 1 helped break the stigma against women taking control in the bedroom.

Broad City Abbi

Ilana’s unabashedness about her fluid sexuality and her open relationship with Lincoln (played by Hannibal Buress) help create an example for the pride young women should have in their sexualities. This normalization is super important since most women are taught from a young age that their sexuality is something to be ashamed of.

4. They emphasize the importance of strong female friendships

Abbi and Ilana’s friendship is the definition of #squadgoals. They love and support each other unconditionally, but they’re also not afraid to call each other out when one of them is being problematic or is about to make a big mistake. Now more than ever, it’s so important for women to stick together and hold each other up, and the gals of Broad City show how rewarding friendships between women can be.

And honestly, there’s nothing cuter or funnier than their video chats.

5. They're not afraid to get political

Anyone who says that comedians should stay out of politics should take several seats and watch a few episodes of Broad City. Jacobson and Glazer, who are both very politically active in their personal lives, are not shy about their views, and they’re not scared to bring those views into their TV show. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Broad City aired an episode that openly endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton (and even got her to do a cameo on the show!).

Jacobson and Glazer have said that they won’t be holding anything back in the newest season of Broad City, revealing that when it's used, President Trump’s name will be bleeped out like a curse word. But that’s not all — Comedy Central President Kent Alterman said that there is "no other reaction to the election" like what Jacobson and Glazer have done with Season 4.

More: Broad City Will Bleep President Trump's Name for the Greater Good

6. Two words: Girl power

In what is definitely one of the most iconic moments of Broad City so far, Abbi and Ilana are told to smile by a man on the streets of New York, and their reaction is perfect.

This is just one example of how Broad City elevates the importance of owning your strength as a woman with humor. Jacobson and Glazer blend art and resistance together seamlessly with Broad City, and it’s amazing. These ladies are making it even cooler to be badass feminist heroines, and we are so here for it.

7. Jacobson and Glazer are bosses IRL, too

These #GirlBosses don’t just reserve their awesomeness for the silver screen; both Jacobson and Glazer have full, active lives outside of Broad City, and they are killing it.

Glazer has been featured on 2 Dope Queens, a hilarious podcast hosted by Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson, and she hosts her own podcast with Robinson called Sooo Many White Guys. She also recently starred alongside Scarlett Johannsen and Kate McKinnon in Rough Night.

Jacobson, who is as artistic as her character on Broad City, designed and published two coloring books, Color This Book: New York City and Color This Book: San Francisco. She also recently wrote and illustrated Carry This Book, which hilariously imagines what the contents of different celebrities’ bags would be. Like Glazer, Jacobson has also found her way into the world of podcasting, and she recently hosted a series of fine art podcasts with WNYC Studios called A Piece of Work that are currently being featured on the Museum of Modern Art’s website.

Can I get a “yas, queen”? If these reasons aren't enough to get you to watch Broad City, then I'm not sure what would be.

Your Official Shondaland TGIT 2017 Preview Is Here

Are you ready for Shonda Rhimes and her insanely addictive, soapy melodramas to once again dominate your Thursday nights this fall? You should be, and there's a new trailer here to help you get in the spirit. A new Shondaland TGIT trailer premiered on Monday night during the Bachelor in Paradise finale and from the looks of this trailer, Rhimes' biggest shows are bringing some serious drama.

More: Will Scandal Season 7 Be Its Last?

Perhaps the biggest indicator that there will be drama aplenty from the three TGIT staples — How to Get Away with Murder, Scandal and Grey's Anatomy — is from the music that was chosen to soundtrack the trailer: Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do." Each of the female protagonists from these shows almost appears bolstered by the music, as if they can hear it in their heads and are compelled to thrive even when it looks like the deck may be stacked against them.

TGIT Shondaland 2017 Trailer

Which isn't entirely untrue. In the final season of Scandal, Olivia Pope is now working in the White House for Mellie, who is now the President of the United States (yeah, that happened). The first time we see her in the trailer, she looks more than happy to tell her father over dinner that contrary to what he believes, she can have it all. Now doubt Olivia is going to be bent on getting the happy ending she wants and deserves before the season is over — will that include Fitz?

Meanwhile, over on Grey's Anatomy, it looks like Meredith might be starting something exciting and romantic with Nathan, Teddy makes her happy return to the hospital, and Maggie and Jackson are sharing some very serious "this is more than just friendship"-type looks.

Oh, and did you think I would forget to mention HTGAWM? Clips from the upcoming season focused heavily on Annalise, who seems to be falling into bed with a new man and who is taking meetings with the mysterious character played by newcomer to the show, Jimmy Smits. What are you doing, Annalise? And why do you look so darn good doing it?

Why My 1-Year-Old Sleeps on the Floor

When my husband and I found out I was pregnant, my in-laws bought us a crib — a beautiful, high-quality, solid-wood crib. My son is now 16 months old, and he has still never slept in that crib.

As soon as the crib arrived, we tucked it into the corner of our bedroom, and as my belly grew, I imagined my little one waking up every morning in it. I imagined my husband and I gently rocking him each night, sweetly singing him to sleep — which I could only assume would take no more than 15 minutes — before quietly high-fiving each other and sneaking out of the room to carry on with our lives and sleep cycles while our son peacefully slept through the night.

Looking back, I realize my expectations of how our nighttime routine would go (you know, like the concept that it would involve any of us actually sleeping at all) were comical.

More: 7 Tips for New Moms to Get Some Sleep

When my son, Trip, was about 3 weeks old — still waking up every two or three hours around the clock to nurse and sleeping in a bassinet next to our bed — he had the first of a few episodes in which he projectile-vomited an amount of liquid that would make the makers of The Exorcist proud. It would have been a little funny and a lot gross — if he hadn't also turned gray and stopped breathing.

We called 911 and brought him to the hospital, where they kept him overnight for observation. We were released the next afternoon with an entirely vague diagnosis. It was probably a fluke, a one-time event, and let’s all just hope it doesn’t happen again. Great. One month later, it happened again. This time, they prescribed two medications and set up a monthly appointment with a pediatric GI specialist. The medications seemed to help, but as a result of the puking-and-not-breathing episodes, doctors insisted that Trip had to sleep on a steep incline — so he wouldn’t aspirate his vomit. Mind you, at this point, he was barely sleeping at all on flat surfaces. We were not optimistic about these new instructions.

So, we bought an inclined Nap 'n Play rocker. He fell asleep in it sometimes, but at this point, he was no longer a newborn and his legs were hanging over the edge. When he napped, (if he napped) it was twice a day for two 20-minute stretches — and that was it. At night, it was worse; until he woke up every two hours, as if he were still a newborn (he was pushing 1 year old at this point), and although I could usually nurse him back to sleep, the constant waking up in the same place, minutes apart, made me feel like I was just living a real-life Groundhog Day.

More: Sleep Training My Baby Made Me a More Confident Mom

When he couldn't possibly fit in the rocker anymore, we — again — tried the crib. Trip completely rebelled against it, and would bash his head against the bars as he rolled around. We then tried co-sleeping, during which my husband was convinced he would roll over onto Trip in his sleep and crush him. So then my husband started sleeping on the couch, bad back and all. Everyone we knew told us to try the cry-it-out method, so one desperate night, I laid Trip down in the crib and stood sobbing outside the bedroom door as he wailed and screamed. He worked himself into such a hysteria, his very active gag reflex took over —and he started throwing up. That was the end of that method.

I asked my mom friends how their babies were sleeping, and all of them answered, "Oh, I’m so bored. She sleeps so much!" or “He started sleeping through the night at 4 weeks," and I would nod and smile and silently curse them and their lack of under-eye bags. I asked for sleeping tips on mommy blogs. I researched baby sleep massage techniques. I bought six different kinds of lavender magnesium lotions. I rocked, sang, read bedtime stories, put up blackout curtains, tried a sound machine, bought a doll that breathed and had a heartbeat (and sounded creepily like Darth Vader) — until one day, when my friend texted me a photo of her 9-year-old daughter’s "floor bed."

"Wait a minute," I thought. "Has this been the answer all along?" I got a two-inch mattress, awkwardly tossed it onto the floor of our room, and stared at it. Sure, Trip was only 1, but if he slept on the floor, he could have more room to move around than in his crib, nothing right up against his sleeping space to bang his head on. We could easily bolster the pad up with a rolled towel if he needed an incline, and if he rolled "out of bed" here, he wouldn't even notice. But would he actually sleep?

More: How Bad Are Pacifiers, Really?

That night, I nursed Trip down, hummed his lullaby and lowered him onto the floor. He slept nine hours that night, only waking once for an early-morning feeding. I could barely keep myself from dancing. Today, he's been sleeping on the floor for four months, and while I'm still working on my under-eye bags, I no longer replace all the words in his lullabies with, “Go the fuck to sleep.”

Just When Corinne Olympios Thinks the BIP Scandal Is Over, Her Co-stars Prove It's Not

ABC seems really eager to put that whole filming shutdown controversy on Bachelor in Paradise to rest, and now that Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson have hugged it out on TV, it's time to move on from it, all right? Um, not so fast. There are still so many lingering questions, and the BIP cast is already speaking out about some of their thoughts on Olympios and Jackson's meeting.

More: 10 People Who Swear the Bachelor in Paradise Scandal Was Scripted

As they spoke to reporters about it, BIP cast members seem to be taking a clear side here. Jasmine Goode talked to Entertainment Tonight, slamming Olympios for not "taking accountability" throughout the scandal.

"I do understand where Corinne's coming from, but I think a lot of people were confused on why she's not taking accountability on what really happened," Goode said. "I think she was maybe blaming it on other things or people in her ear and I think people were, like, rolling their eyes because they're probably, like, why aren't you being 100 percent honest and saying, 'I was not a victim? I shouldn't have said that'?"

Goode later added that she's salty toward Olympios for not speaking to her while the controversy was unfolding.

"I just want to hear why she didn't reach out to me, because me and her were really close," Goode said. "Even if you couldn't talk to me for legal reasons, just say, 'Hey Jas, I got your text. I can't talk'... I'm over talking about it, honestly."

More: DeMario Jackson Won't Avoid Confrontation on The Bachelorette

Another contestant, Diggy Moreland, also called Olympios out for the statement she released after production was shut down, referring to herself as a victim.

"Corinne saying, 'I was the victim,' that wasn't really addressed too much," Moreland said. "DeMario kind of said exactly what he did say, whereas Corinne was kind of still playing into, 'I'm still the victim.' It wasn't really getting solved. She didn't receive as much love [from the cast] as DeMario did."

Even Raven Gates, who competed on the same season of The Bachelor as Olympios, openly sided with Jackson. "I've always been Corinne's friend. I'll always have her back too. I just thought it was more important to have DeMario's back and be outspoken about it, just because it was so crazy," she said.

We still don't know exactly what happened that night, and we also don't know how much the cast members know either. That said, it's a little disturbing to see so many people openly picking a side in something that, ultimately, didn't involve them. Neither Jackson nor Olympios has told the full story, so all this still has a pretty icky feeling to it. We just hope all these people picking sides hasn't silenced Olympios if she truly was a victim like she said.

5 Ways to Quickly De-escalate an Argument With Your Partner

$

Even the best couples fight sometimes — that’s just what happens when two people who care about each other spend a lot of time together. But unfortunately, in some cases, arguments can escalate quickly, turning a little disagreement into a big issue.

Obviously, no one wants that to happen, but it can and does. There are plenty of reasons this can happen, says licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula, author of Should I Stay or Should I Go? Maybe you’re stressed out and tired, you’re really passionate about the subject you’re arguing about or one (or both) of you just tends to get fired up easily.

Fights can also escalate quickly when they involve unresolved issues and old resentments, says licensed marriage and family therapist David Klow, owner of Skylight Counseling Center in Chicago. “The old hurts are like a keg of gasoline, and the new arguments are like the sparks that set off the gasoline, making things escalate in explosive ways,” he says. And of course, the danger in getting to this point is that you can say things you’ll both later regret.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to try to keep things from getting out of hand. Try one or all of these tricks to keep your arguments above the fray.

More: An open letter to toxic couples who come to me for therapy

Ask for a timeout

Simply walking away can be seen as “stonewalling,” which is where one person shuts the other out, Durvasula says. But asking if you can have a moment to clear your head — and actually taking time to do it — can help get the conversation back on track.

Move to a different room

It’s a weird trick, but it works. Changing spaces can give you a reboot. “The simple art of motion and a different setting can take you off track — lots of arguments are two people saying the same thing over and over just in a louder volume each time,” Durvasula says. “Moving location can change this loop.” BTW, if your argument starts in the bedroom, Durvasula recommends moving to a different spot since that room should be a space reserved for intimacy.

Verbalize where you think they’re coming from

Saying something like, “I just want to make sure I understand where you’re coming from. What I think you’re saying is…” can help show your partner that you’re trying to see their side of the story. “The best thing we can do in an argument or any interaction with a partner is to attempt to see their point of view,” Durvasula says. “In so doing, we can often de-escalate anything because it shows the other person that you may not agree, but you can see their point of view.” Not only does it convey that you’re trying to understand where your partner is coming from, Durvasula says it might also help you calm down in the process.

More: The three D's that could be the harbinger of doom for your relationship

Use “I” instead of “you”

Using the word “you” can feel accusatory, but “I” or “I feel” statements force you to take ownership of your feelings, Durvasula says. “It helps contextualize the issue and the associated feeling,” she explains. For example, “I feel annoyed that we spend every Saturday with your friends.” “You” statements, on the other hand, (“You always insist that we hang out with your friends all the time”) get an argument nowhere.

Change your tone

When a fight escalates, the best thing you can do is to try to switch to damage-control mode, Klow says. “Try to calm your own emotions and find a way to bring the interaction to a safer place,” he explains. That includes changing your tone, saying something unexpected or injecting a little humor to find a way to reassure your partner that you still care.

More: Our marriage is better because we fight like cats and dogs

See the argument for what it is

Arguments are just that — arguments. What they’re not is a sign that your relationship is over. “Don't overreact to arguments,” Durvasula says. “Some people view arguments as harbingers of doom and become hysterical in the face of them.” Sure, if you’re always fighting, it’s not a good sign, but overall, arguing here and there is normal in a relationship, she explains. “You can argue, but… after the argument check in with your partner and let them know you love them,” Durvasula says. “Arguments happen. It really comes down to how they are conducted and dealt with on the back end that speaks to the health of the relationship.”

Jessica Biel Is Every Mom Discussing the Terrible Twos

If you wake up Jessica Biel's 2-year-old in the middle of the night, she will cut you. OK, maybe not literally, but girlfriend will be pissed, because this kid is driving her nuts and she needs her sleep. Sound familiar?

The incredibly relatable Biel is one of those celeb moms with whom we'd truly love to eat frozen pizza and drink cheap boxed wine. Biel spoke with Stephen Colbert on his show the other night to discuss her new series, The Sinner — but the conversation turned (hilariously) to Silas, Biel's son with husband Justin Timberlake.

Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel

Silas arrived on the scene in early 2015, and Biel and Timberlake definitely aren't ready for a second child — or even sure there will be one at all, according to Biel. Biel vented to Colbert about having to pry things "out of his slimy little hand" (Silas's, not Justin's) at bedtime, to ensure he doesn't poke himself — and wake up the neighborhood in the process.

Biel said, "God forbid they wake up in the middle of the night. You know, if you wake my kid up in the middle of the night by accident, you're dead to me."

MoreJessica Biel & Justin Timberlake Are Not Loving the Toddler Years With Silas

Colbert teased Biel that any middle-of-the-night parties were likely the fault of Timberlake and his buddies. She agreed.

"Not my friends," she deadpanned. "My friends are quiet, demure, modest. He's a wild musician."

Biel was also happy to list all the things that cover every surface of her house, courtesy of Silas. "What one can only hope is chocolate?" suggested Colbert.

"If it's not [chocolate], it's stickers and Play-Doh," Biel responded. "And Gak and crumbs and who knows? Everything is covered with everything," she said.

Colbert took the opportunity to warn Biel that the threes are often even worse than the twos. Biel is clearly resigned to her fate.
"I've heard so much about the ‘three-teens.' The 3-year-olds are called the ‘three-teens' because they're so insane that they're just like having tiny teenagers, which is way worse than having big teenagers, I think," Biel shuddered.
Then she laughed and backpedaled as so many of us have done in her position (that is, the being-caught-complaining-about-our-kids position, not necessarily while on The Late Show): But no, really! motherhood's great! My kid is so precious!

"I mean, listen. It's not all terrible, by the way," Biel said. "He's like the greatest of all time. Now, I'm feeling really bad. He's cute. He's funny."

Bonus: Motherhood has apparently inspired Biel to co-found a restaurant called Au Fudge, which Biel explained to Colbert is so named because parents can't say "the fun words anymore." The restaurant is the perfect haven for exhausted parents. You can eat (and drink!) while the kiddos go nuts in the eatery's "creative space," where there is an — absurdly but aptly named — Au Fudge au pair on duty. Sweet. Can we get a table for a few hundred of us, including Biel and Timberlake and even wild Silas?

We'll be the first to admit that not every classic movie and TV show needs to be remade or turned into a Broadway musical (lookin' at you, Friends). When it's really a classic, it stands the test of time on it's own. There's no need to reinvent the wheel here, people. But in the case of Mean Girls, bring on the musical adaptation.

We had our doubts in the beginning. Mean Girls is a slumber party staple for an entire generation. It's fair to say that nearly all millennial women can quote at least half of the movie without batting an eyelash. Remaking that kind of greatness is a seriously bold move. Could it actually be pulled off?

The answer appears to be yes. The first trailer for Mean Girls the musical was just released on Facebook, and honestly, it looks like it's going to be so fetch.

The reason the trailer gives us such high hopes for the musical is that it gives us our first glimpse into the casting, which is what made the movie so great. Regina, Gretchen and Karen all look into the camera as they formally invite us to go see the Mean Girls musical.

"Come here, I want to tell you something," Regina half-whispers. "First of all, I really like your hair color," she tells us, which is such a Regina thing to say.

Then, Regina is cut off as Gretchen interrupts her, saying, "We want to invite you to see Mean Girls."

Karen follows up, believing she's giving us the real 411 by explaining what a musical is. "It's a musical. People talk and sing and move at the same time." Basically, watching the trailer tells you everything you need to know about how the Plastics are going to interact on stage, and we're living for it. Their chemistry is perfect, just like it was between Rachel McAdams, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert in the original film.

There's also the fact that the musical version will be tweaked slightly from the movie — it's set in 2017 instead of 2003, which means the cliques at North Shore High will have smartphones and social media to contend with. Will the Burn Book go digital? We can't wait to see.

Cutest mother-son pic of the week? That's got to be Kate Hudson and Ryder Robinson (her son with Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson). Hudson posted a photo on Instagram of the two of them rocking matching buzz cuts (oh, yes!). Ryder's got one arm slung around his mom's shoulders in the picture (which Hudson simply captioned with a heart).

But what's with the buzz cuts? We can't speak for Ryder, but we know that Hudson chopped her blond locks sometime in late July for her role in the upcoming film Sister. The movie, which is written and directed by singer/songwriter Sia (yes, that Sia) — also stars Dance Moms alum Maddie Ziegler, who often appears in Sia's music videos. Remember Sia's eerie mini-me in "Chandelier"?

Clearly Hudson and Ziegler hit it off during filming, as Hudson also shared a sweet pic of them taking a break to sneak a peek (with proper eyewear, chill) at the eclipse on Aug. 21. Ziegler also shared the same photo — because pics or the eclipse never happened, right?

Hudson hasn't been flaunting the buzz cut that much, possibly to keep it on the down-low before the film is released. She seems to be defaulting to wigs or her usual hipster fedoras when out and about. But honestly, we think the buzzed look really suits her; after all, she's Kate Hudson, and she can rock anything. And if this photo is any indication, Ryder 100 percent inherited the rock-anything gene.
