Alert: Chili's Might Be Cutting Your Favorite Dish From Their Menu

0
0

2017 hasn't been the best year for a lot of us, and it's about to get worse — especially if you're a fan of major American restaurant chains, where the menu can be counted upon to deliver comforting, consistent meals, if nothing else. But now, Chili's has announced that they're slashing their menu by a whopping 40 percent, meaning 75 items from their gloriously massive 125-item menu will be gone forever, and I'm seriously livid.

The theory: By reducing the number of foods they serve, Chili's can focus on providing better quality. But I call BS! The chain is getting rid of two of my favorite vegetarian appetizers, crispy asparagus and Buffalo fried cauliflower, and their light and healthy mango tilapia. Instead, they're going to double down on their "meatier burgers, ribs and fajitas," Chili's president Kelli Valade said in a press release.

More: Chili's cancels autism fundraiser after controversy

Yes, 125 items is a lot. But honestly, you can go anywhere in town and get a burger. Items like crispy asparagus and Buffalo cauliflower are what keeps me going back to Chili's time and again — their uniqueness and relatively high quality make them a favorite. They're also citing the high price of avocados as a detriment to profits, so be on the lookout to see if your favorite avocado-containing dishes are axed from the menu too.

More: Dad fired from Chili's for telling co-workers not to say "retard"

Apparently, business has been down at Chili's, which is why they're revamping the menu. But ironically, they're going to lose the business of people like me, who go back again and again for certain menu items that are about to go extinct.

More: Bacon-crusted ribs from TGI Friday's are ridiculously amazing

It is what it is, and if I want to go to a restaurant where the menu doubles as substantial reading material, there's always the Cheesecake Factory. In the meantime, hopefully Chili's will still be serving huge margaritas, because I have a feeling that the next time I eat there, I'll need one.

No Playing Favorites: Prince George Won't Be Permitted to Have a Best Friend at School

0

No best friends allowed. That's actual policy at Thomas's Battersea in London — the school little Prince George, 4, is now attending.

Last week, the tiny heir to the British throne was pretty much the cutest thing on the planet as he held his dad's hand on the first day of school. (Seriously, that blue uniform did us in — thank you, Kensington Palace, for sharing pictures.) But we all got a little melancholy today when we found out that Thomas's puts the kibosh on students making any special, singular friend.

George and Wills

Prince George 1

Jane Moore, a Sun journalist who lives near Thomas's Battersea and has friends whose kids go there, explained to British network ITV last week that the school wants its students to befriend each other equally. Which is all well and good — just not necessarily how kids actually operate.

More: Kate Middleton Shares Prince George's Adorable Nickname for the Queen

Moore explained to other panelists on the show, Loose Women: "There are signs everywhere saying 'be kind' — that's the ethos of the school. They don't encourage you to have best friends."

Again, it's a noble sentiment. But best friends can prove difficult to discourage. What if Prince George happens to find a special buddy who really gets him? Someone who lets him privately trash-talk his annoying little sister Charlotte in the finger-painting corner and keeps all his tiny royal secrets?

Prince George will go by "George Cambridge" at the school (no one will ever guess who he is with such a sly alias!), and like any other student, must follow school rules. That means those pertaining to best friends as well as those regarding birthday party — and, we assume, tea party — invites.

Moore said, "There's a policy that if your child is having a party, unless every child is invited, you don't give out the invites in class. I think [it] is quite a good thing, as you don't feel excluded."

Fair enough. Is Thomas's Battersea onto something here? Of course we're all for kids learning to be kind to everyone. It's just hard not to love the idea of George bonding with a commoner bestie outside the Kensington Palace walls. A royal nanny just doesn't cut it as BFF material, you know?

Jimmy Kimmel Brings Newborn Son to First Public Appearance Since Heart Surgery

It's about time we finally get a look at Jimmy Kimmel's newborn son. Little Billy Kimmel was born on April 21, but soon after he arrived, Kimmel announced the newborn would need heart surgery to treat his tetralogy of fallot with pulmonary atresia, a type of congenital heart defect that causes five different distinct abnormalities. Billy's first heart surgery happened almost immediately after he was born.

But now, Billy is doing well, even though he will need more heart surgeries in the future. Kimmel has been sharing updates on Billy's health both on his show and on social media, and Billy has finally made his first public appearance: at a Los Angeles Alex's Lemonade Stand event, a charity that raises money for childhood cancer research. After such a rough start with a life-threatening illness, it's no wonder Billy and his mom and dad and big sister, Jane are supporting other kids who are fighting for their health and lives.

Little Billy was fast asleep against Kimmel's chest while his wife carried Jane, who enjoyed a glass of lemonade. Aren't they just the picture of an adorable family?

They've come a long way from when Kimmel took a break from the jokes he normally cracks on his show and delivered a tearful message telling fans about Billy's fight for his life. The hard times the Kimmels have gone through even ended the host's longtime feud with his rival Jay Leno.

The First Trailer for Netflix's Alias Grace Will Make Your Heart Race

On the heels of the success of Hulu's series The Handmaid's Tale, Netflix needed its own adaptation of a Margaret Atwood bestseller. It may have found a hit in Alias Grace, which, based on the first trailer that just dropped, looks to be a creepy thriller that rivals the Hulu award-winner.

More: What to Watch When You Don't Know What to Watch

Check out the trailer for yourself, but buckle up, because it's a pretty intense two-and-a-half minutes.

First trailer for Netflix new series Alias Grace Atwood

First trailer for Netflix new series Alias Grace Atwood

According to Netflix, "The six-hour miniseries follows Grace Marks, a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who, along with stable hand James McDermott, was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery, in 1843." But watching the trailer shows that even though she was convicted, Marks may actually be innocent, and there are clearly some other (mental? supernatural?) factors at play here.

More: Ranking All of Netflix's Summer TV Shows & Movies So Far — What's Worth the Watch?

Alias Grace is based on Atwood's 1996 novel of the same name, which follows historical events — the famed 1843 murders actually happened — but through the lens of Marks' fictional doctor, Simon Jordan, who tries to reconcile the brutal nature of the murders with the Marks he knows: a gentle, meek woman. The novel features twist after turn, and it's probably a safe bet to assume the Netflix series will too.

The miniseries adaptation has been in the works since 2012 when it was first slated to be a feature film. Probably wisely, its writers and producers decided a miniseries was a better fit — fans of the book will know that even six hours will be cutting it close to tell this tale.

Louis C.K. Is Still Dodging Sexual Assault Rumors

0

Rumors have been shadowing comic Louis C.K. for years, saying he's known for sexually assaulting the women who work with him. But what might make the rumors even worse — at least, for now — is C.K.'s unwillingness to address them.

More: Louis C.K.'s SNL Sketch Has One Huge Problem

C.K. has been plagued by anonymous internet talk that says he locks himself in rooms with female colleagues and masturbates in front of them. While no one has specifically come forward and claimed to be one of his victims, he has been outed by name by Roseanne Barr, who says she hasn't experienced such an assault from C.K. herself, but claims to have heard accounts from multiple women.

Another fellow comedian, Tig Notaro, made headlines last month for publicly calling on C.K. to address the rumors, saying, "I think it's important to take care of that, to handle that, because it's serious to be assaulted. It's serious to be harassed. It's serious, it's serious, it's serious."

More: Louis C.K. and Julia Louis-Dreyfus Win Amy Poehler's Emmys

But that still didn't push C.K. to say much. In an interview with The New York Times at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, he refused to address the rumors in earnest, saying only, "I’m not going to answer to that stuff, because they’re rumors. If you actually participate in a rumor, you make it bigger and you make it real."

The New York Times reporter pushed again, asking, "So it's not real?"

C.K. responded, "No. They’re rumors, that’s all that is."

More: Louis C.K.'s SNL Visit Was Offensive on Every Level (VIDEO)

As of now, it's hard to know what to make of this. While believing victims is so important, there is no one here claiming to be a victim. On the other hand, C.K. is a powerful force in the industry, and speaking out against him could have irreparable consequences. Like women stayed silent for years before coming forward in droves to accuse Bill Cosby of drugging and raping them, victims could be being silenced by the power structures at play here. Only one thing, though, is for certain: C.K. isn't doing himself any favors by refusing to address the rumors as they grow.

Everything You Need to Know About the iPhone 8 & iPhone X (There Are 2!)

Apple hosted an event today to share details about their next generations of the iPhone, and before the event even began, people had some high hopes.

What will the new iPhone be like

What will the new iPhone be like

New iPhone features

The event was classically over-the-top, opening with a showcase of Apple's new Steve Jobs Theater that lasted through the entire duration of The Beatles' "Love is All You Need." My eyes were rolling so hard they nearly got stuck in the back of my head — your new theater is pretty, sure, but what about the new iPhone, something the rest of us will actually be using?

After a spiel about the new Apple park on their company campus, new plans for retail (apparently they call their stores "town squares" now, which... OK) and some info on updates to the Apple Watch, they finally got to it. And not only did they spill the deets on the iPhone 8, but they also shared information about the iPhone X, which they're touting as "the future of the smartphone" and "the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone."

So, what are we working with? Here's everything you need to know.

iPhone 8/iPhone 8 Plus

  1. It comes in three colors: silver, space gray and gold.
  2. The glass is stronger, so your phone will be more durable.
  3. It's microscopically sealed, so it's more dust- and water-resistant.
  4. It has a Retina HD display with 3-D touch technology and true-tone display that will adjust your screen's brightness and color depending on the ambient light around you.
  5. The speakers are 50 percent louder than on the iPhone 7 and they're in stereo, so when you're watching movies in widescreen, you'll be able to be fully immersed in sound.
  6. It's powered by a new A11 bionic chip, the most powerful and fastest chip to ever be used in a smartphone, so your phone will work more quickly and intuitively than ever before.
  7. The apple-designed GPU graphics card is faster than ever and optimized for 3-D games and augmented reality.
  8. The camera is way better. It has a 12 megapixel sensor, a new color filter for truer tones and better saturation, a wide-angle and telephoto camera, image stabilization and "low noise" so the colors and sharpness of your images are truer to life. There's also a new portrait lighting mode that makes taking artsy pictures of faces easier than ever.
  9. The video is better too, recording at higher resolutions with lower noise and more frames per second.
  10. The phone comes fully equipped with an AR Kit for augmented-reality apps.
  11. Thanks to its glass back and Qi compatibility, the iPhone 8 supports wireless charging. This is great news for anyone who is sick of their iPhone chargers constantly fraying.
  12. The iPhone 8 will be $699, and the iPhone 8 Plus will be $799.
  13. They both will be available in two storage configurations: 64 GB or 256 GB
  14. You can preorder the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus starting on Sept. 15, and it will be available a week later, on Sept. 22.

iPhone X

  1. It will be available this year. You can order it on Oct. 27, and it ships Nov. 3 — just in time for the holidays!
  2. It has an edge-to-edge screen and stainless-steel band that are microscopically sealed to be dust- and water-resistant.
  3. The home button is gone. There are buttons on the side, but everything else is done using the touchscreen.
  4. You unlock it using Face ID, totally new technology that scans and recognizes your face to unlock your phone. All you have to do is look at your phone and it will recognize you and give you access. It's super-secure too. With Touch ID, there was a 1 in 50,000 chance someone else's fingerprints could open your phone. With Face ID, that number is 1 in 1,000,000.
  5. It comes in space gray and silver.
  6. It has a brand new Super Retina HDR display, with 2,436-x-1,126 resolution and 458 pixels per inch, the highest pixel density of any iPhone ever, and it has great color accuracy thanks to true-tone technology.

  8. Animojis are the new emojis! You can choose from 12 different emojis, and using the True Depth camera technology, they can make the same facial expressions as you. You can even record videos where they'll match the movement of your face and mouth exactly — it's like getting your own Pixar cartoon character.
  9. It has better battery life. The battery lasts two hours longer than the iPhone 7, and like the iPhone 8, it's equipped with Qi-compatible wireless charging capabilities.
  10. The iPhone X will retail for $999 and is available in 64 GB or 256 GB

Witnessing Childhood Bullying Changed the Way I Parent

0
0

“Oh, no. I’m stuck,” I heard a classmate whisper under his breath as he struggled to free the lower half of his body from the one-piece chair/desk that had him trapped. The furniture looked like a dollhouse accessory in proportion to his frame. He pulled and pulled, but each desperate wiggle only brought more attention — and, from the surrounding kids, laughter — to his plight. I'd watched this kid get tormented for years because of his appearance. They called him “golly gross giant” and “blubber butt" and often pantsed him, yanking his loose trousers to his knees.

Then on one glorious, vengeful morning, he showed up at school wearing brand-new overalls. “Try to pants me now,” he said proudly. But as fate would have it, one of his overall straps popped under the pressure. A loud clang rippled through the onlookers when the metal clasp hit the corner of his seat. Laughter devolved into hateful taunts: "Maybe you should lose weight, fatty." "You’re such a blimp, they’ll have to use a chainsaw to set you free."

I remember standing silently by the blackboard, my heart breaking into a million little pieces for this boy. Yet I did nothing. I waited — confused and anxious — for help to come.

I don’t know if it was the emotions running high that day or the embarrassment or if the kid had finally just had enough. But he tore off his overalls, picked up the desk, and with rage in his eyes smashed it into the floor until only fragments were left. When he was escorted from the classroom that afternoon in his T-shirt and underwear, it was the last we saw of him. But the impact of that bullying never left my mind.

More: Here's What Your Kids Are Really Learning About Bullying in School

When my oldest was 7 or 8 years old, he came home from school one day in a melancholy mood. Normally, he's a chatterbox, giving me the rundown of his day as if he's acting out a Shakespeare play. On this day, however, there were no smiles or animated scenes; he immediately retreated to his bedroom.

“Honey, is something wrong?” I asked, peeking around the edge of his door.

“I don’t know.” His face was hidden in a pillow, but I could hear his stifled sobs.

I put my hand on his shoulder. “You can tell me anything,” I urged.

After a few seconds, he turned and looked at me. “One of the older kids teased Jack,” he confessed. “They called him a weirdo.”

More: How to Stop Your Kid From Being the Bully

Jack was my son’s best friend — a tall, freckled redhead known for his quirky knock-knock jokes. Our families had moved to town the same year, and the moment the boys met, they became inseparable. I was furious to hear that Jack had become the target of bullying — but I knew I had to be patient and help my son navigate his own feelings.

“Are you upset because they teased him?” I asked.

He wiped his nose on the back of his sleeve (before I could protest) and said, “No. I’m upset because I didn’t do anything to help him.”

His words cut through my heart. I thought of my classmate from so many years ago — and the look of anguish on his face. I had failed that boy, and in this moment I realized I had failed my son too.

My son and I had often talked about the importance of being kind to others and what to do if someone wasn’t nice to you. But I hadn’t prepared him for this day — a day when he could have made a difference. When my classmate was bullied, I had stood quietly on the sidelines. When I was a kid, I was never given the guidance to do the right thing.

More: My Teen Won't Use a Smartphone — Will He Still Have a Social Life?

That night, I called Jack’s parents and told them about the incident at school. They were thankful because Jack hadn’t said a word. I also sat down with my son and gave him my explicit permission to intervene in the future. I encouraged him to walk away so the bully loses the audience they crave — or if he feels comfortable, to ask the bully to stop (and encourage others present to do the same). I also told him to never be afraid to tell someone — whether it's me, a teacher or another adult he trusts. And I explained how important it is to support victims of bullying, even after an incident happens.

“I should call Jack and tell him I’m sorry for not doing anything,” my son suggested.

“That’s a great place to start,” I encouraged. Finally, the smiled returned to his face.

Our experiences shape the way we raise our own children, and it took me decades to realize how much that one childhood incident would define how I parent. That boy, wherever he is today, is the foundation from which I’ve learned to teach empathy, acceptance and respect. He's the guiding light I’ve used to approach the complicated issues of prejudice, diversity and equality. And thanks to him, my son will grow up as a helper — not just a bystander.

[SPOILER] Is Leaving Grey's Anatomy, But They Aren't Going Far

This much is certain: if you're gonna be a fan of Grey's Anatomy, you've got to have thick skin. No, this is not a franchise where everyone gets their happy ending — but it's full of endings, nonetheless. And the latest bit of casting news to come out of ABC's medi-drama means Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital will soon be losing one of their finest.

More: Grey's Anatomy Season 14 Will Feature a Blast from the Past

Don't fret just yet, though, because this casting shakeup isn't entirely a bad thing. According to E! News, Jason George (aka Dr. Ben Warren) will be leaving Grey's Anatomy. Go ahead and grieve his departure for a moment; we'll stand by.

Now, ready for some good news? George isn't going very far. In fact, he'll be under the same Washington-based, Shonda Rhimes umbrella as a star on the upcoming as-of-yet untitled Grey's spinoff about members of the Seattle Fire Department.

While this was hinted at heavily during the Season 13 finale — remember when Ben ran into the burning hospital to help save Dr. Stephanie Edwards? — the network remained vague about potential casting for the spinoff.

Until now, obviously. After The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, George tweeted in confirmation, saying, "Oh, and um... this is happening... the #greysanatomy universe is expanding."

George also retweeted a post by Stacy McKee, an executive producer, editor, writer, and co-showrunner on Grey's. McKee will be helping to helm the new series, too.

So far, the only other casting news that has been announced is the recently canceled Rosewood's Jaina Lee Ortiz. Whether Ortiz will play the ensemble drama's lead has yet to be determined.

Happily, George will remain on Grey's as a series regular until the spinoff drops into ABC's rotation, which is rumored to happen midseason of 2018.

Could this affect the marriage of Ben and Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson)? It's a distinct possibility, since it's unclear how Ben will make the transition from Grey Sloan to the Seattle Fire Department. However, it will be nice to see George — who, IMHO, is highly underrated — land squarely in the spotlight.

Arie Luyendyk Jr. Broke Up With His Girlfriend for The Bachelor — Ugh

One might think ABC would be avoiding any major drama with the next season of The Bachelor, considering the romantic quagmire that was the just-wrapped fourth season of Bachelor in Paradise. But, then, one would be wrong — because not only is Arie Luyendyk Jr. a controversial pick for the next Bachelor, but his ex-girlfriend claims he wasn't actually a bachelor IRL for very long before accepting the ABC gig.

More: Here's Why ABC Cast Arie Luyendyk Jr., a Surprise Choice, as the Next Bachelor

Sydney Stempfley, a 26-year-old receptionist, has opened up to Entertainment Tonight about her year-long romance with Luyendyk and why she didn't see any of The Bachelor hoopla coming.

According to ET, Stempfley and Luyendyk met via Instagram a few months before she moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, where the 35-year-old race car driver and real estate agent resides.

"We started talking in January 2016, just through direct message," Stempfley said. "We kind of talked off and on just through Instagram, but I landed a job in Scottsdale after graduating [Miami University in Ohio]. I flew out to search for apartments, so I messaged Arie and I told him that I would be in the area and he asked me out on our first date."

Stempfley claims the "hit it off right away," started dating and have been in a happy, monogamous relationship for the last year... to her knowledge, at least.

The couple even celebrated their one-year anniversary in July in a super-romantic way — by going back to Chelsea's Kitchen, the restaurant where they first officially laid eyes on each other.

When asked whether either party had cheated during their time together, Stempfley insisted to ET that there was no infidelity on her part. "We always had a great time, tons of fun. We made each other laugh and had just really a great relationship, so I can't complain there... [we] had great memories," she said.

Is it just us, or does that sound like a direction contradiction of the lovelorn Luyendyk described by Bachelor host Chris Harrison?

It would seem someone has some explaining to do, because Stempfley came ready with receipts. In addition to plenty of photos of the formerly happy couple, she also revealed that they'd already met each other's parents, traveled extensively together and spent holidays together.

And, as if all of that wasn't damning enough, Stempfley recounted the couple's breakup in heartbreaking detail.

"The night before the breakup, we hung a little light fixture together, made beef stew and I slept over. Everything was normal! The next day, we had plans after I got off work. It was just a regular day, so it definitely caught me by surprise," she elaborated. "I was over the phone originally, just out of the heat of an argument, just a small argument. But then I went over to his place and we discussed it further and that's kind of when it happened [for good] — it was in person."

A few days before the official Bachelor announcement was made, Stempfley touched base with Luyendyk about the rumors he could be in the running. He assured her he hadn't been contacted by producers and doubted it was a possibility.

Fast forward to his "reveal" on Good Morning America, when Stempfley (and the rest of the world) got confirmation Luyendyk would be in the driver's seat this season.

As for whether or not she thinks the breakup was orchestrated by Luyendyk so he would be available for the reality dating series, Stempfley remains uncertain, saying, "The only thing I have to go off of is his word."

Oof, ABC. Just, oof.

The first line, of course, is a lyric from the pair's country music duet, "Pushin' Time," which was part of Lambert's 2016 Album of the Year, The Weight of These Wings. Although not explicitly confirmed, the song certainly seems to lean into Lambert and East's love story:

"Are we fools for rushing in?/'Cause I already dread the end/Lonely ain't no place to start/I guess that's just where we are/Oh, how I remember well/The sunset on September 12th/I disappeared to get a drink/You still kept your eyes on me/Sometimes love acts out of spite/And good things happen overnight/Can't take it slow 'cause you and I are pushing time."

Although fans were initially stunned by Lambert and ex-husband Blake Shelton's decision to split in 2015, the shock has since evolved into happiness as both country superstars seem to have found love again — Shelton with punk-pop-rock queen Gwen Stefani, and Lambert with East.

The latter have kept their relationship pretty low-key, aside from the occasional interview comment and ridiculously adorable Insta-pics.

However, East did reveal during a radio segment that he and Lambert unsurprisingly met through their music. Or, to be more specific, his. "Randomly enough, she came to one of my shows... A friend of hers introduced us," East told CMT After MidNite station 92.3 WCOL.

Why Does It Feel So Good When Someone Plays With Your Hair?

0
0

I am not above admitting I bribe, and even pay, my kids to play with my hair. We all know it feels wonderful. It's relaxing and can immediately put us in a Zen-like state, and I find I want nothing more than to end my day with someone running a brush through my hair or braiding my locks.

It has become a nightly tradition in my house, and I began to notice I was not only enjoying the feeling of it, having my hair played with was lifting my spirits if I was feeling down, stressed or just in a funk.

More: Mysterious Massage Technique Can Help with PMS Symptoms

Many would agree it's a wonderful sensation, but why does having your hair played with or getting your head massaged feel as good as it does? And can it really elevate our mood?

SheKnows spoke with Dr. Sara Williams, a clinical psychologist and professional consultant for the Between Us Clinic. Williams confirmed it does in fact reduce stress since humans are social beings and are wired to feel "pleasure through physical intimacy with one another by touch," she says.

And it’s not just any touch that will do. It must be loving, human touch — which is why a massage chair doesn’t feel as good as a getting a massage by a person. “The sensory neural network behind our experience of physical contact can tell the difference,” she says.

When someone is touching you in a loving way, it releases the bonding hormone known as oxytocin. Human contact causes the body to react by reducing cortisol levels, which "can lower blood pressure and reduce heart rate, all of which reduce stress and have beneficial impacts on our overall well-being and mood," says Williams.

And the healing benefits don’t end there, Williams adds. “Some studies suggest that regular touch, such as having someone play with our hair, can even strengthen our immune system.” I can think of no better way to ward off sickness than a nice head rub.

Touching of the hair, head and scalp are especially intoxicating as there are "Specialized sensory neurons located at the base the hair follicles," says Williams.

More: 10 Things Your Hair Tells You About Your Health

She goes on to explain these neurons detect tiny movements, and once stimulated, "the neuron transmits a sensory message to the brain." This is what causes feel-good chemicals to be released.

Shannon Lajoie, a licensed massage therapist who has been practicing for 17 years, adds that we really don't realize how much our work frontalis muscle does during our waking hours.

“Head massage has this transformative effect because it feels so good that it puts our awareness in our body and out of our head, which is amazing considering the massage is taking place on the head,” she says. “There’s more nerve endings and definitely more trigger points and a very high concentration of acupuncture points in our heads too.”

MoreHow Much Hair Loss Is Normal?

It’s easy to forget how much our heads actually do for us throughout the day. Facial expressions, teeth grinding, talking and chewing all create tension in our head and neck area whether we are aware of it or not. It feels soothing for the tension to be released and for this muscle tissue to get some love.

And unlike other forms of massage, you don’t need to hire someone licensed and trained to reap the benefits. In some cases, you don’t need to look any further than the person sitting next to you on the couch.

8 Tips to Help People With ADHD Make It Through the Workday

A cursory scroll through social media at any given moment will reveal myriad versions of the same sentiment: Is it the weekend yet? The daily grind wears everyone down. But for people living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, getting through the workday comes with its own unique set of challenges.

There's no shame in that, either. People who aren't affected by ADHD struggle to stay focused until it's time to clock out — you literally live with a disorder characterized by trouble concentrating and completing tasks. Kudos to you for giving it 150 percent day in and day out. No ifs, ands or buts about it... you're a hustler.

Still, sometimes even the hardest of hustlers needs a little help to make it through the workday. So we went straight to the source: men and women with ADHD who've figured out how to keep their symptoms in check at the office or even how to use them to their advantage. Bonus? We talked to a few experts in the field of ADHD too.

If you're looking for some solid insight, here are a few stellar suggestions from other people who know what it means to walk in your shoes.

Break up the day

"There are several things that adults with ADHD can do to minimize distractions and increase productivity. First, in order to increase focus, find a quiet room to work in or use headphones. If your work place allows it, use flextime arrangements so you can work when you know you will be most productive. For example, many adults with ADHD who take medication find that they work best in the morning and terribly in the afternoon because their medication has worn off by then.

"If you start to feel restless or hyperactive, don’t be afraid to take a break. Get up, walk around, grab a drink. By allowing yourself several short breaks throughout the day, you’ll be more productive when you are working. It allows your brain to rest for a moment." — Dr. A.J. Marsden, Beacon College of Leesburg, Florida

Make yourself a to-do list (or three)

"My best tip is making lists! I make a list the night before. The next day at work, I check them off as I go. If I don't get to one, I add it to the next day. I am retired now, but I still do this every single day. It's really a comfort and helps me be much more efficient and productive." — Marilyn T.

Find a job with the right flow

"The best tip I have for getting through the workday is to find a career in which the flow works best for you. It took me a long time to understand this. I tried call-center jobs, but sitting in a desk was not stimulating enough for my hyperactivity. I owned a dance studio where the physical part helped with my hyperactivity, but would leave me feeling non-stimulated mentally for the majority of my day. For the last four years, I have been working in software development. I manage a team of 50 developers, and not one day is the same for me. There are multiple challenges in a day that I have to overcome, and that gives me things to focus on in manageable 'slices.'" — Elizabeth M.

Break a sweat

"I'm fortunate to work for a boss who was very receptive when I told her I had ADHD. Together, we troubleshot ways to maximize my productivity and minimize distractions, and my favorite solution so far has been to exercise. My boss allows me to have flextime so that I work out in the mornings before work (without having to sacrifice too much sleep) and sometimes during my lunch hour. Any time that needs to be made up just gets tacked onto the end of my day if necessary. But since we've been implementing this system, I've found I'm so much more productive that I don't need to log a lot of extra hours to get my work done. Exercise really helps me focus, which makes me a much better worker." — Susan L.

Utilize time-management apps

"There are honestly so many apps that can help people like me with ADHD do better at work. You can download alarms, timers, list-makers, agendas... even just making the most of Google Docs and Google Calendar can make a world of difference in prioritizing your time."  — Katie S.

Give meditation a try

"People always seem to roll their eyes when I suggest this, but meditation is the thing that has helped me the most dramatically in getting through the workday with ADHD. Because of my cyclical mood patterns, I have often struggled with making friends at the office. This of course leads to undue tension and stress, which just exacerbates my symptoms. I tend to spin my wheels too much about what is going on around me instead of the tasks at hand. I have found that short sessions of mindful meditation, say 5 or 10 minutes when the day allows, have really helped me clear my head and concentrate better." — Marci D.

Be honest with yourself

"It's so hard to give out any advice that will for sure work for everyone with ADHD because it is a spectrum disorder. Personally, the only way for me to effectively manage my ADHD and thrive at work is through medication. But it took me a long time to be honest with myself about that fact. I have friends who successfully manage their lower-level symptoms using organization techniques at work, but that hasn't been my journey. So the best tip I can give is to be realistic about where you are on the spectrum, and if needed, get medication that will help you manage your ADHD." — Ashley G.

Stop multitasking

"I use to feel like the only way to get through the workday was to juggle everything all the time. Ironically, that usually just led me to feel more anxious and less focused, which resulted in me not finishing any of the things I was juggling. I've since learned one of the best ways to succeed at work is focus on one task at a time. As soon as I finish that task, I clear it from my mind and allow myself to move onto the next." — Billie R.

Reminder: Tom Hardy Is Super Intense

0

It’s time to celebrate Tom Hardy, who turns 40 on Friday. He’s well known for some pretty amazing performances, including his portrayal of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, Max in Mad Max: Fury Road and Eames in Inception. Hardy was also nominated for an Oscar in the Supporting Actor category for The Revenant, proving he's an actor who loves to take on intense roles; it's why we love him.

We also have to talk about how intense he is as a person. That intensity we see onscreen definitely isn't confined to his acting. When Hardy is at his most passionate in life, he’s not going to hold back his exact feelings or thoughts. It’s beyond refreshing to see an actor who is so unapologetically open. With that, let’s take a look at some of the times Hardy was so intense regarding certain moments in his life. Yes, these are enjoyable as they sound.

1. He really, really, loves dogs & they're like family to him

When it comes to dogs, Hardy loves them. A lot. Seriously, he probably loves them more than you do, and if you need further proof, here are a bunch more photos of him with dogs, or you could consider the touching tribute Hardy wrote to his dog Woodstock when he died.

After losing dear old Woodstock, Hardy shared an emotional letter (and his rep confirmed with Entertainment Weekly that he did indeed write it) via a fan site, Tom Hardy Dot Org.

"I don’t normally speak out about family and friends but this is an unusual circumstance," part of his message read. Hardy wrote of Woodstock, "I am ultimately grateful for his loyal companionship and love and it is of some great comfort that he is no longer suffering. Above all I am completely gutted. The world for me was a better place with him in it and by my side. To the bestest friend ever. To me and to a family who loved him beyond words and whom he loved without doubt more than I have ever known. Woody was the bestest of journey companions we ever could dream of having. Our souls intertwined forever."

2. He is proud to walk around naked

Tom Hardy

While promoting his BBC drama Taboo on Alan Carry's Chatty Man in 2016, Hardy admitted that he enjoys walking in streams nude. "Every week there was a naked Monday [...] I was naked, and I had to walk around in the water in Tilbury, around the woods," he said. "It was so cold and it felt so good. There were people there to watch me and none of it was going to go on screen — it was just purely for pleasure."

3. Don't ask about his sexuality

Tom Hardy #2

At the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, which Hardy attended for his film Legend, a reporter asked him a question about sexuality: "In the film, your character Ronnie is very open about his sexuality, but given interviews you’ve done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous. Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”

To that, he responded, "What on earth are you on about?" He added, "I don’t find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality. Um, are you asking me about my sexuality?” The reporter replied, "Um, sure." Hardy answered, “Why?" and then basically ended it all by declaring, "Thank you."

In September 2015, Hardy opened up to Entertainment Weekly about why he responded the way he did. "That really, really annoyed me. It was just the inelegance of being asked in a room full of people," he said. "Now I’m happy to have a conversation, a discussion, at a reasonable time about anything. I’m confident in my own sexuality, and I’m also confident in my own being and talking about any issue you want to talk about it. But there is a time and a place for that."

Thanks to stuntman Jake Tomuri, whom Hardy has previously worked with, there is evidence of the actor doing Dubsmash. He takes it to a whole other level, because of course he does.

5. He takes bedtime stories seriously

As you can see in this video, when it comes to telling bedtime stories (like he's done multiple times for BBC's kids' channel CBeebies), Hardy takes it seriously — and he does a damn good job at it, too.

6. He regrets some of his tattoos

Tom Hardy #5

It takes a lot to admit mistakes you've made, but Hardy is willing, ready and able to. For example, he regrets one tattoo that he got for his former wife, Sarah Ward. He got a dragon, since she was born in the year of the dragon, per The Globe and Mail, and as he confessed to the outlet, "That's what you call a mistake tattoo." He also covered up a few of the places where he tattooed her initials.

Were you aware that he had some of the most amazing MySpace photos ever — and it's something he so isn't ashamed of? As he told Sky News in September 2015 (via Marie Claire), "I’ve got no shame about my MySpace photos, especially the one of me in my underpants which is a glorious photo of a man in his natural habitat. In my tighty-whitey budgie smugglers. In America, they say, 'You should be ashamed of this,' but I’m actually not remotely ashamed — that is me in my natural habitat, thank you."

According to Marie Claire, Hardy had quite the MySpace "About Me," which partly read:

"I’m Grateful, arrogant self centred, tenacious, versatile, honest, honourable, loyal, loving, gentle, consistent, reliable, focussed, prideful, passionate and nuts. I have a head like a disco ball, if I say I’ll do something, unless I absolutely can’t it gets done, I never give up on humanity, I love people. I want to see communities stand up, honest and open, flexing to the fullest of their capabilities and combined usefullness. happy. I laugh at bullies. I am reactionary but I have learned to hold my tongue and my trigger finger. This is what a reporter asked him at the May 2015 Cannes Film Festival about his movie Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Charlize Theron: "When you were reading the script, did you ever think, why are all these women in here, I thought this was supposed to be a man's movie?" To that, Hardy responded bluntly and with a confused look on his face, "No. Not for one minute. That's kind of obvious." BOOM.

10. He kind of likes himself

In April, Hardy became quite the hero. As confirmed by a Richmond Police spokesman to the BBC, "We can confirm that there were two people on a stolen moped that went through a red light and crashed into another vehicle." The police statement continued, "The males ran off and one was detained by Tom Hardy. Both suspects were initially taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries."

Yeah, Tom Hardy is one unforgettable dude.

Yolanda Hadid Isn't Holding Back About How Lyme Disease Upended Her Life

Her journey with Lyme disease was well documented on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but now Yolanda Hadid is able to tell her her own story in full. With her new memoir, Believe Me, Hadid is opening up about Lyme disease, her bitter divorce from David Foster and what it was like filming the petty drama of RHOBH with a crippling disease.

More: Real Housewives of New York's 11 Most Insane Fights Ever

Hadid's struggle to treat her Lyme disease was a well-documented storyline during her time on RHOBH. Viewers often saw the lengths to which she went to treat her symptoms, which included moving into a smaller apartment in Los Angeles to be closer to treatment facilities and specialists, changing her diet and hiring an assistant who was able to provide her with the proper medical treatment, both holistic and pharmaceutical.

Now that she's left the show, Hadid has chosen to really let her fans into her world and show them what kind of emotional roller coaster she has been on in her battle with the disease. Among some of the excerpts picked up on by E!, the most revealing ones have to do with learning two of her three children also have Lyme disease, her newfound friendship with singer Avril Lavigne, and her divorce.

Yolanda Hadid Insta Bella Anwar Chill Out

Yolanda Hadid Insta Bella Anwar Chill Out

While we saw a snippet of Hadid commenting on her children's diagnoses, she really opens up in the book about Bella and Anwar navigating life with Lyme disease the way she did at the beginning. In the book, she writes, "When I see the pictures of the spirochetes on his Fry Labs results, my anxiety goes from one to a hundred in mere seconds. My baby! How could this be possible? A wave of helplessness washes over me. I am totally pain-stricken. How can I cure Anwar if I can't cure myself?".

While it didn't help that she was accused of having Munchausen's by the other cast members of RHOBH when her symptoms worsened, it appears that Hadid found comfort in one unlikely friend: Lavigne. The singer also struggles with her own battle against Lyme disease, which Hadid witnessed firsthand during her first meeting with her. "Her light sensitivity from Lyme is so severe that she can't even take her sunglasses off when we are sitting in the living room, even though my blinds are closed. Avril's mother has been taking care of her, and I can see the fear in her eyes."

Perhaps the most bitter pill to swallow from these early excerpts is Hadid's comments about her ex-husband, Foster. While he appeared a caring and doting husband on RHOBH, the reasons for their divorce were never explicitly stated. Now, Hadid offers so clarity, awful though it may be, on what happened. "After having a front-row seat to my journey, he's actually saying that I used a SICK CARD?" she wrote, in reference to Foster allegedly saying that she had played her "sick card" and needed to get over her illness. "Who is he talking to? Who is influencing him? How did he come up with such an unkind statement? I don't deserve this."

Hadid's honesty is truly something else and hopefully, this book gives people a better view of the woman who has so clearly been struggling to get her side of the story heard for a while now.

Lady Gaga Opens Up About Her Struggle With Fibromyalgia

Throughout her rise to fame, Lady Gaga has never been shy about discussing very personal matters, including mental illness and sexuality. She has also spoken about living with chronic pain, and yesterday, she told us more: She has fibromyalgia.

In a tweet referring to her new documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, which will be available on Netflix starting Sept. 22, the singer confirmed that fibromyalgia is the cause of her chronic pain, and wrote, “I wish to help raise awareness and connect people who have it.” She followed up by tweeting: “I am praying that more and more people come forward and we can all share what helps/hurts so we can help each other.”

Fibromyalgia is a complicated illness characterized by constant fatigue and widespread muscle and joint pain. But, like other hard-to-diagnose conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome, the symptoms are frequently overlooked by medical professionals and dismissed.

More: The Truth About Fibromyalgia

Acknowledging the difficulty that can come with living with and treating a chronic illness, Gaga explained at a press conference before the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last week that although it was “hard, but liberating” to show her struggle with pain in such a public way, she views her pain as a “microphone.”

“My pain does me no good unless I transform it into something that is. So I hope people watching it who do struggle with chronic pain know that they’re not alone. It’s freeing for me… and I want people that struggle with it to hear me,” Gaga said at the press conference.

She said that there is a “degree of self-deprecation and shame with feeling in a lot of pain,” and wants people who watch it and think that there’s no way someone in such pain could sing, dance and perform to know that she “struggle[s] with things like them.”

Fun Things to Do With Kids This Fall

0
0

Sure, summer is often filled with sandy selfies by the shore, sticky ice cream stains on every shirt and laughter-filled sunsets with your kids. But the season that follows offers a whole new slew of memories to be made. With adventures in produce-picking (Apples? Pears? Pumpkins? Oh my!) and indoor entertainment alike, developing fun family fall traditions is a task many parents take on post-Labor Day. In addition to carving funny/spooky jack-o'-lanterns, raking up a pile of leaves for after-school jumping contests and picking up probably too many gallons of apple cider, there are plenty of activities perfect for autumn that you might not have thought of yet. We tapped a few moms of the internet for their top treasured traditions you can easily adopt too.

Visit museums

Summertime attracts much larger culture-seeking crowds since most kids are free from busy school schedules. But feeling like a sardine in the natural history museum is nobody's idea of fun, so why not head there during the fall? There are usually a couple of solid after-school hours prime for art- or dinosaur-ogling before museums close — and honestly, we won't tell if you play hooky in the name of education.

Danielle Crouchley, mom of four, takes her kids to science exhibits and other museums in the fall so they have the most space and time to explore, ask questions and learn. And, hey, her eldest is a finalist in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge this year, so those visits must have paid off.

Go stargazing

If you happen to be floating around the Caribbean during the hottest days of summer, you might see so many stars, you'll think glitter has just been spewed upon the sky. But in many parts of the U.S., fall actually presents a clearer, more crisp horizon view — prime for gazing up and introducing kids to astronomy. For Sujata Vemuri, mom of two, taking a moment to look up as the moon rises is a beloved autumn pastime. “We love huddling under a blanket and sipping hot chocolate. As my daughters and I take turns naming the constellations, our discussions range from space travel to life beyond earth,” she says.

Have a one-on-one date

If you’re a parent or a caregiver of more than one kid, it can easily feel like herding cats. Constantly balancing a forever-growing to-do list with relationships, career and kids’ schedules can make giving your kid a day or night of uninterrupted mom-time feel impossible. But for Lyss Stern, an author and mom of three, her goal for fall is to spend individual time with each of her children. “I take my 10-year-old son to a new Broadway show, as he loves the arts and is an aspiring actor... I'll then take my oldest son to a baseball game on the weekend, and I always go the ballet with my little ballerina, Blake,” she shares.

Shop for (& cook with) fall ingredients

Putting kids to work in the kitchen isn’t an easy task; it all depends on their level interest (or whether they're patient enough to wait for a pie to bake). But since babes can no longer be distracted by splashing in a public pool or chasing bubbles in the backyard, getting a dinner-making team together might be your best bet.

Amy Cohn, mom of two and a registered dietitian, suggests making shopping for fall produce into a scavenger hunt. It's an easy way to introduce new flavors and make things fun for kiddos with short attention spans. Since kids being back in the classroom (and on the football field or in choir rehearsal, etc.) means you don’t get quite as much QT with them as during the summer, a weekend trip to the farmers market followed by child-friendly fall recipes can make for a family activity you’ll all enjoy. Need some recipe ideas? Look no further.

The Queen & Meghan Markle Are Officially Acquainted

There's clearly another royal wedding coming, and many of us are expecting the announcement from the palace any day now. How do we know? Sources say Prince Harry's girlfriend, Meghan Markle, just met Queen Elizabeth II, which seems like a sure sign that she's about to be welcomed into the royal family.

More: Source Claims the Queen Plans to Crown William & Kate King & Queen

Harry and Markle took a three-week vacation to Botswana and Zambia in late August, and according to sources, they went straight from their trip to the royal family's summer estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, to see Harry's dad, Prince Charles, and his stepmom, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. They also reportedly swung by Balmoral Castle, where the queen was taking a summer break away from Kensington Palace.

"He wanted to introduce Meghan to the queen," and insider told Us Weekly. "It went well. It’ll no doubt be the first of many encounters."

More: The Queen Reportedly Grants Prince Harry Permission to Wed

Markle has already met the rest of Harry's family, and his big brother, Prince William, is particularly taken with her, sources have said. Now that Markle has made nice with the entire family — and apparently has the queen's blessing — Us Weekly reports that she and Harry may already be engaged and just waiting for the right time to make an official announcement.

"These things are planned well in advance; it’s not easy to roll out that kind of news," a source told the magazine. "Everyone knows how happy Harry is and is excited for the day it’s announced."

Previous reports have said that Harry had an engagement ring made with diamonds from a brooch that belonged to his mother, Princess Diana, and rumors have been flying, saying he popped the question during the trip to Africa.

"Meghan and Harry are in such a good place — Africa took their relationship to a whole other level," an insider said. "They’re just crazy about each other."

Kate Hudson Says Her C-Section Was ‘Lazy’

0
0

Oh, girl. Kate, we expected so much better of you — you and your Fabletics and your chic buzz cut.

Kate Hudson is in the hot seat after referring to her first birth, a C-section, as the "laziest" thing she has ever done. The actor has two (adorable) sons: Ryder, 13, with Chris Robinson and Bingham, 6, with Matt Bellamy. Ryder was born via C-section; Bingham was a vaginal birth.

How did this comment even come about? Hudson is the cover star in October's issue of Cosmopolitan, and part of the feature story was a survey she completed. Most of the questions — and her answers — were adorably innocuous. But Hudson took a seriously wrong turn when she put "C-section" and "lazy" in the same sentence.

More: Kate Hudson & Son Ryder Are Serious Hair Twins

As you can probably imagine, Twitter and Instagram both lit up like Rome burning to the ground. One Instagram commenter wrote on Hudson's feed, "your comment about c-sections was very ignorant. I had a c-section, not because I was 'lazy' but because after 17 hours of labor I had placenta previa and was rushed into the ER as life saving measures."

Over on Twitter, things weren't any better for Hudson.

Twitter KH

That wasn't all — not by a long shot.

“Maybe if us c section moms [weren't] made to feel like shit and less than moms for not giving birth vaginally, we could all just laugh this off as a bad joke," one mother wrote.

“I’ve had 3 C-sections. And it’s by far not the ‘laziest thing I’ve ever done.’ Come on @katehudson you must’ve known you were gonna get hate on for that answer. It’s nice to know what you think of the majority of women who gave birth that way,” wrote another. You get the picture.

Poor Kate. We all make mistakes and say dumb shit every once in awhile, and it's tough being in the public eye where all that dumb shit is so very visible to the world all the time. But, sadly, it appears Hudson has yet to issue any public apology or statement in response to said dumb shit. So, dear Kate, you might want to get on that ASAP — since that insensitive comment doesn't look like it's going to blow over anytime soon.

There were much more relatable survey answers from Hudson, though. The last photo she took on her phone was pic of her son's bee sting, and in an ideal world she would pick former co-star Liv Tyler to be her roommate. (If she had to have a roommate. Which she doesn't. Because she's rich and famous — and sometimes tone-deaf. But we sure do love her hair.)

Rebel Wilson Libel Lawsuit Payout Is Unprecedented But Well Deserved

Updated, Sept. 13, 2017, 8:50 a.m. PT: Rebel Wilson has been given a record payout in the libel case she won in June against Bauer Media: $3.6 million plus court costs and interest. It's more than has ever been awarded in an Australian defamation case, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Wilson had originally asked for $7 million, but before the case went to trial, offered to settle for only $200,000. Bauer Media rejected her settlement offer and maintained that the articles it published about her lying repeatedly about personal details were not defamatory.

In a series of tweets, Wilson wrote that the payout is "the end of a long and hard court battle against Bauer Media who viciously tried to take me down with a series of false articles." She continued, "When the jury delivered its verdict they answered every single point in my favour. Today Justice Dixon accepted that Bauer Media subjected me to a sustained and malicious attack timed to coincide with the launch of Pitch [Perfect] 2. The judge accepted without qualification that I had an extremely high reputation and that the damage inflicted on me was substantial. He said the nature of the aggravated defamation and the unprecedented extent of dissemination makes vindication of particular importance."

Turns out that wasn't true at all. And Wilson brought a defamation suit against the media company that made it up and just won the case.

An all-female jury in Australia took two days to reach a verdict in favor of Wilson against Bauer Media after a three-week trial. Wilson and her legal team were fighting claims made by the company that she lied about her age, name and upbringing and that she lost two movie roles because of the scandal.

On Wednesday night, she posed with her legal team for a photo she posted to Instagram, thanking them for their hard work on the case and her fans for their support through it all.

"Just crushed my defamation case in Australia," Wilson wrote. "Thank you to all my family, friends and supporters! I had to take a stand. I had to stand up to a bully, a media organization Bauer Media Group who maliciously took me down in May 2015 with a series of grubby and completely false articles."

She continued, "Far too often tabloid magazines and the 'journalists' who work for them don't abide by professional ethics. Far too often their conduct can only be described as disgraceful and disgusting! I'm glad that the lovely ladies of the jury have agreed with me. Their unanimous and overwhelming verdict has sent a clear message. I love my job as an actress and as an entertainer, and I look forward to rebuilding my career now that the record has been set straight. Thank you so much everybody!"

No damages have been set yet for the case, but Wilson doesn't seem too worried about that.

"For me the main thing is to set the record straight," she told reporters after the verdict.

Serena Williams is not holding back her baby news, and we're loving every second of it. The tennis icon happily introduced baby girl Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. on Instagram two weeks after her Sept. 1 birth in Palm Beach, Florida — and we are kvelling just like the aunties we only wish we were.

Yes, we know Alexis already has actual aunties, most notably Venus Williams. Venus told ESPN about the birth of her niece — right before playing her U.S. Open Match, of course. She said, "Obviously I'm super excited. Words can't describe." Words definitely cannot describe this face.

Williams' fiancé — and papa to Alexis Jr. — Alexis Ohanian Sr. also posted to Instagram a very sweet cartoon version of their growing family, along with the caption, "Welcome, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr., we're so happy to meet you. We made you a video of our adventure together so far... Our little girl is already mama's perfect sidekick."

The birth was apparently no easy feat — even for the 23-time Grand Slam champion. In one clip, Williams says, "We had a lot of complications, but look who we got: We got a baby girl!"

You sure did, Serena. And how many babies get to say they basically won a Grand Slam while in the womb? A pretty impressive pedigree to kick off this whole being-born thing.
