Madonna's Feud With FedEx Is Making Us LOL

You guys, imagine this: a world where someone can gaze upon the iconic face of Madonna and not believe she is, in fact, Madonna. We are living in that world.

Madge is engaged in a bitter dispute with FedEx over her identity because apparently, there is a FedEx driver in this world who refused to believe that Madonna was actually Madonna, and therefore would not release her package to her. She tweeted about it, looking super-grumpy and captioned her photo, "When you've been arguing with fed-ex all week that you really are Madonna and they still won't release your package," she wrote along with an eye-roll emoji and the hashtag, "#bitchplease."

Listen, it's not difficult to see why she would be super-grumpy about this. How would you feel if you were a super-recognizable celebrity, and the FedEx delivery-person didn't even recognize you?

What I would give to hear the conversation in which Madonna argues with a FedEx employee and tries to convince them that she is actually Madonna. How did this even happen? Does Madonna lack photo I.D.? Has she never received a FedEx package before? I just have so many questions, fam.

Of course, Madge did just move to Lisbon, Portugal, so maybe that's what has her delivery driver so hung up. Her LA FedEx driver probably knew what was up. You can't blame her new Portuguese delivery-driver for being careful about making sure whatever Madonna ordered actually ends up in the hands of Madonna.

Alanis Morissette Opens Up About Postpartum Depression

OK, we were already big fans of Alanis Morissette (and, let's be real, the entire '90s chick-rock pantheon), but her recent wonderfully honest video interview with People about living with postpartum depression sealed our allegiance to the Canadian singer and mother of two.

Morissette and her husband, rapper Souleye (Mario Treadway), have two children together: son Ever Imre, 6, and daughter Onyx Solace, 1. Both children were born at home with midwife and doula present — Ever was a 25-hour birth, while Onyx (born in June 2016) took all of 59 minutes to arrive according to Morissette.

Morissette struggled mightily with postpartum depression after Ever's birth, and she was acutely aware of the risk of its recurrence.

"I had a pretty good sense it was going to happen again," Morissette said in the video. "I was ready to do anything [to battle PPD]."

Sure enough, postpartum depression returned — with a vengeance — almost immediately after Onyx's birth — and Morissette continues to do all she can to manage it.

For her, it often manifests in "a lot of sleeplessness... I push through the being debilitated, but knowing I need to survive and show up. If [my kids] need me, they have me... I want to keep as much semblance of normalcy for my kids as I can; I don't want it to be their burden."

What helps Morissette most? The singer says she is a huge fan of exercise like Pilates and modalities like hot tubs and saunas. "Heat is such healer for me," she said.

Her biggest help? That would be Souleye. "God bless my husband," she said. "I say [to him], 'There's an end to this, and I'm sorry I'm not able to be who you typically know me to be.'"

Morissette emphasizes that PPD is insidious for its ability to debilitate anyone. "It doesn't matter what sort of lifestyle you have... PPD doesn't discriminate," she said. And now, when she encounters other PPD sufferers, she says her reaction is, "Oh, my God, I love you. I'm so sorry. Let's hold each other and cry for four hours." (Alanis, we are totally available to do that, BTW.)

Morissette has been a strong believer in talking about PPD since her first experience with it after Ever's birth — and she refuses to sweep it under the rug. As she told Good Morning America in 2012"I really think transparency really levels the playing field for all of us and renders our humanness. It was just a really intense time, and if I could share anything with anyone who's going through it, it would be to encourage them to seek help and reach out a little earlier than I did."

Also in 2012, Morissette spoke about her PPD with You magazine. "The degree and intensity of my post-natal depression shocked me. I am predisposed to depression, but what surprised me this time was the physical pain," she said. "I hadn't realized the depths to which you can ache — limbs, back, torso, head, everything hurt — and it went on for 15 months. I felt as if I was covered in tar and everything took 50 times more effort than normal."

Alanis and Ever

Morissette often posts sweet pictures of her family to Instagram (like this recent one with her son, mid-wrestling match) and has told People she tries to think of her PPD struggle as something that will pass; she tries to hold onto thoughts of all the good her future holds. "I look forward to traveling more with my children... my daughter and I are little foodies. Just loving my kids and my family with every fiber of my being allows me to see [PPD] as a chapter."

You Can Donate Breast Milk to Moms Affected by Hurricane Harvey — but Should You?

Can you donate your breast milk to flood victims in Texas? Technically, yes. But this is not a DIY operation, so listen up.

You may have seen the story of a Missouri mom, Danielle Palmer, who has gone viral for sending 1,040 ounces of her breast milk — that's almost 8 gallons, 346 feedings for an infant — to flood victims in need. A pretty epic way to pay it forward, right?

Well, Naomi Bar-Yam, the president of the board of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (nope, I didn't know about this organization either, but am glad I do now) fears that — although well-intentioned — Palmer's homegrown approach might not have been the safest. For one thing, human milk can carry infections (even serious ones, such as HIV and syphilis), and only a milk bank can process donations safely.

Milk donation mom

Palmer's gesture was a beautiful one, but safe breast milk donation isn't simple. At milk banks, the screening process is rigorous — as it should be, considering the vulnerability of the intended milk consumers. First, potential milk donors must have their blood tested before a doctor will approve their donations; then, all breast milk must be tested in full for any pathogens. After that, the milk is pasteurized and then retested according to Bar-Yam.

So even if you're healthy, don't just unload a freezer full of your breast milk and put it in the mail. Find a milk bank near you and let them walk you through the process.

More: How to Donate Diapers to Hurricane Harvey Victims & Their Families

Even then, your milk might not end up where you'd hoped, Bar-Yam explained. “We are assuring that Texas has the milk that it needs, and if their (milk) doesn’t make it to Texas, (it) will make it to other fragile premature babies,” she said.

But how did Palmer manage to send so much breast milk to Texas families?

“The first month of [son Truett’s] life, he was unable to eat,” Palmer told Today. “All the milk I was pumping was going into the freezer.”

Palmer's son's speech therapist, Nicole Edwin, reached out to Palmer to inquire about her milk supply. Edwin — a member of Guiding Star Mid-Missouri, a support group for women — was looking to send donations to Texas post-Harvey.

“I was excited,” Palmer said. “I had this large stash and knew I could share that with someone.”

If you too are excited about donating breast milk, just make sure you get the facts first — from a legit milk bank. And if the testing process proves too tricky, rest assured there are many other ways to help families affected by Hurricane Harvey.

What Is Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction, & How Do You Treat It?

$

Pregnancy is a time of big emotions and life changes — unfortunately for some, it can be difficult, either physically or mentally (or both). While pelvic pain of some sort or another is just par for the course for some pregnant people, some of us are exceptionally "lucky" and develop symphysis pubic dysfunction. What is SPD, and what the heck can we do to make it better?

What is symphysis pubis dysfunction?

While the phrase "symphysis pubis dysfunction" might sound complicated, if you break it down, it's easier to understand. The symphysis pubis is a joint found in the very front part of the pelvis directly in front of the bladder and contains cartilage that allows for some movement, especially during childbirth. It also works to keep the two bones of the pelvis together and steady during normal activity.

Dysfunction, when paired with symphysis pubis, means that the joint isn't working as it should. As you can imagine, this results in pain that can range from mild (yet livable) to totally debilitating with a major impact on your quality of life. While pregnancy alters a person's pelvic load, hormones can hasten relaxation of ligaments in the area, which can lead to the perfect storm of a pelvic nightmare.

Symptoms can include:

  • Burning, shooting, grinding or stabbing pelvic pain
  • Pain that is relieved by rest
  • Pain that radiates to back, abdomen, groin, perineum and legs
  • Clicking of lower back, hip joints or sacroiliac joints when changing position

Lynda McClatchie, a registered physiotherapist, notes that SPD can also cause more intense pain during certain activities. "Symphysis pubis dysfunction is fairly common for women during pregnancy and is often quite painful at the lower front of the pelvis when raising a leg, rolling over in bed or moving your legs to get out of bed — anything where your weight is not distributed evenly," she says.

What is symphysis pubis dysfunction
Image: Image: Getty Images/Design: Ashley Britton

How is SPD treated, anyway?

While pregnant people aren't ordinarily X-rayed because it isn't recommended during pregnancy, experienced practitioners can usually diagnose it with a physical exam (yes, this means your care provider will poke around on your sore spots) and possibly pair it with a sonogram to measure symphysis pubis separation.

There are a number of ways SPD can be treated. McClatchie says, "It is sometimes helpful to wear a sacroiliac joint belt — this is a non-stretchy belt that will Velcro quite tightly around your pelvis for external support." She says that often, this will provide immediate relief.

There are other things you can do in your daily life that can also improve your level of discomfort. "Sleep on your side rather than your back and roll onto a side like a log, so you aren’t using your back, abs and legs," explains McClatchie. She also recommends pelvic floor muscle exercises (aka Kegels), which can improve the support structures of your pelvis.

Other measures recommended by health care providers can include acetaminophen, ice, stretching, using a pillow between the knees during sleep, regular breaks from sitting, staying active and careful coordinated movement. In severe cases, lumbar epidural injections can break the pain cycle, and hospitalization for pain relief can become necessary if your condition is severe enough.

Get checked out

If you're having pelvic pain that sounds like it could be SPD, bring it up to your doctor or midwife as soon as you can. While it is generally not dangerous for your baby, it can be and sometimes is debilitating for a parent-to-be. In addition to helping you manage your pain, they will also keep note of your status through delivery and in the postpartum period — because although some symptoms completely resolve, that's not always the case.

Getting help is always a step in the right direction, and your health care provider will be able to work with you to get your pain under control as best they can.

Cher Plans to House Young Illegal Immigrants in Her Home

Cher has been busy on Twitter this week. Not only did she basically open up her home to young people who are afraid of being deported after Tuesday's scheduled DACA elimination, but she laid a serious smackdown on some poor woman who dared question her. Basically, just another day in the life of Cher, or so we'd imagine.

The elimination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (better known as DACA), removes safeguards and paths to citizenship for kids who were brought into the U.S. illegally by their parents. It's put a lot of young lives in danger of serious upheaval, and Cher is having none of that.

She took to Twitter Tuesday morning to urge her fans, followers and colleagues to not only stand with DACA recipients — commonly referred to as Dreamers for the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (or DREAM) Act, which has yet to pass in Congress — who are in danger of losing protections after DACA's elimination, but to literally take them into their homes, making their houses into sanctuaries.

We're still more than a week away from the premiere of the 25th season of Dancing with the Stars, but the contestants on this year's show have been hard at work for six weeks training with their partners in preparation for the competition. Property Brothers star Drew Scott is no exception to that, and he seems to be taking his role seriously as the man who is making our DWTS/HGTV crossover dreams come true.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Scott opened up about all his jitters before the show premieres and what he's doing to get into fighting shape to go after that Mirrorball trophy.

"I'm excited. I'm nervous. I'm everything," he said, adding that he and his twin brother/Property Brothers co-star have both been considered for the show in the past. "Dancing with the Stars is something we've both been asked to do before but it's finally happening."

Scott and his partner, Emma Slater, already have their nickname picked out, he said: Team Hot Property. Just try to tell us you can go a whole season without rooting for that.

And six weeks into rehearsals, Slater must be working Scott hard, because he says he's already seen one pretty major change to his physique.

"I'm a slim guy but I've lost 25 pounds in the last six weeks," he said. "I'm dedicated."

As we all know, though, dedication is what it takes to win the Mirrorball. And Scott will be up against some tough competition this season; in the full cast list, released this morning, there are plenty of household names and professional athletes who could turn out to be stiff competition.

The Scary Thing Most People Don't Know About Carbon Monoxide Detectors

$

0

I'm a tad paranoid about home disaster preparedness, as my friends know based on my grab-and-go emergency backpack and how diligently I check my smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. That's why this news story has me so shaken up: It turns out that carbon monoxide detectors have an expiration date and writer Jeanne Sager learned about it the hard way.

Sager's house was protected by two CO detectors, one one each floor of her house, and she dutifully changed the batteries every two years, per instructions. But about 6 years after she bought her house, she started to feel exhausted all the time. Over the course of a couple months, Sager found herself forgetting why she'd walked into a room, couldn't concentrate on work, and lost her appetite.

More: The Simple Change That Could Increase Your Home's Value by $5,000

Soon after, Sager and her husband noticed soot near the heating vents in their home and called a repair person. They discovered something totally terrifying: Their furnace had been leaking carbon monoxide into their home, and Jeanne had been exhibiting the classic symptoms of CO poisoning. The worst part is that through it all, their carbon monoxide detectors never. Went. Off.

More: 9 Designer Hacks for Decorating in Small Spaces

Here's why: CO detectors actually need to be completely replaced every 5 to 7 years — not just have their batteries swapped out. Sager understandably didn't know this, and I'm pretty sure most people don't. Even in my own household prep paranoia, I've never heard this fact, nor have any of my landlords mentioned it. I just assumed that changing the batteries would keep the detectors in commission indefinitely.

More: How turning up the heat in my house nearly killed my family

If you don't remember when you installed your home's carbon monoxide detectors, you should replace them immediately. It's a pretty minor, low-lift home improvement that could quite literally save your life. And don't forget to keep track of when they were installed so you know when to replace them next.

We don't mean to sound alarmist here, but you'll be able to (literally) breathe easier knowing you and your loved ones aren't at risk of a silent killer like CO poisoning.

Update: Sept. 6, 2017 - 5:56 p.m

Corinne Olympios has revealed all the details about her in-development scripted show, and it basically sounds like she's trying to become the Taylor Swift of television.

More: Corinne Olympios Will Return to Bachelor in Paradise for a Reunion Special

The new show will be about dating in the modern age with apps and millennials, explaining to the Daily Beast that a lot of it will come from her personal experiences with men.

"I think people just get so worked up about creating, like, dating pages, or [...] I feel like it just becomes such a topic of conversation, like, 'Oh my God, who are you dating? What kind of guy are you going to date? Does this person even look like their picture?'" Olympios explained. "I just feel like there are so many questions and new ways of dating, so it’s comical in itself."

Olympios already has a producer attached, Christine Peters of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Olympios plans to both work behind the camera developing the series and serve as the star of the show, but don't think her new boyfriend is just fodder for her television pitch. She says she already has "enough material built up, believe me."

I'm guessing that means we should expect some Nick Viall and DeMario Jackson references.

She reportedly has a new boyfriend, which is kind of confusing because she was on Bachelor in Paradise roughly two seconds ago, but good for her.

She also has not one but two new TV shows in the works.

Ever since Olympios careened onto The Bachelor to vie for Nick Viall's heart with her adult nanny and her platinum vagine, she's been angling for a career in reality TV. And after her stint on Bachelor in Paradise took a turn no one saw coming, she's finally taking matters into her own hands — by having a producer friend create a couple of shows starring her, of course.

Olympios spilled the news to The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that she's creating both a reality show and a scripted series, and she plans to be front and center on your TV screen in both of them.

"I do have a [reality] show in the works, and I’m also working on a scripted show with one of my favorite producers," she said. She didn't share anything like concepts or plotlines, though. Maybe she'll plug the shows when she has her much-anticipated sit-down with Bachelor host Chris Harrison on Tuesday.

But right after she was eliminated from The Bachelor, Olympios was already eyeing a brand new career in TV shows. At least, that's what she told Glamour at the time.

"I just feel like I need my own show," she said. "Sorry, just putting it out there."

Olympios is one of the strongest personalities the Bachelor franchise has ever seen, and love her or hate her, you gotta admit: she makes for great TV. Make America Corinne again!

Antibiotics You Might Want to Avoid During Pregnancy

$
0
0

Are you pregnant and being told you have to take antibiotics to fight an infection? You might want to pay attention to the name of the drug your doctor or midwife recommends.

According to a new study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, certain antibiotics can increase the risk of birth defects in babies.

The researchers say the risk is small. Considering, however, that pregnant women commonly deal with infections, you might want to listen up.

“Infections during pregnancy are frequent and should be treated,” said Dr. Anick Bérard, the lead researcher and a professor at Montréal University, in a statement. “However, our study highlights safer options for treatment of infections, more specifically urinary tract infections (UTIs) or pulmonary infections, at least during the first trimester of pregnancy.”

More: Do You Need DHA in a Prenatal Vitamin?

Antibiotics to avoid while expecting

Which antibiotics were linked to birth defects? Clindamycin, doxycycline, quinolones, macrolides and phenoxymethylpenicillin, the study reports.

The good news: Amoxicillin, cephalosporins and nitrofurantoin were three antibiotics studied that are believed to be safe. Nitrofurantoin is often prescribed for UTIs during pregnancy.

Earlier this year, Bérard linked classes of antibiotics such as quinolones, macrolides, tetracyclines, sulfonamides and metronidazole to a higher risk of miscarriage in early pregnancy. Erythromycin and nitrofurantoin were not linked to impairments. In 2015, she assessed azithromycin and clarithromycin and found no adverse impacts on child development.

Dr. Nanette Santoro, a gynecology and obstetrics professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, said patients at her fertility clinic are told not to take anything until they check with the doctors — even over-the-counter medications.

“The list of potentially problematic medications changes frequently, and we want to be sure we have an opportunity to double check for them rather than take a risk,” she added.

What to take, what to skip

The Mayo Clinic reports that these antibiotics are typically deemed safe during pregnancy:

  • Amoxicillin
  • Ampicillin
  • Clindamycin
  • Erythromycin
  • Penicillin
  • Nitrofurantoin

The Mayo Clinic also notes that tetracyclines such as doxycycline and minocycline can cause liver damage in the mother and discoloring in infants’ teeth.

Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, which also are often used together to combat UTIs, might be associated with having a higher risk for birth defects — though they say there’s “no direct proof that these antibiotics cause birth defects” and call for more research, the Mayo Clinic reports.

Santoro said that clindamycin and macrolides are not on the “do not use” list for pregnancy, and quinolones are labeled to “use with caution.”

“The vast majority of antibiotics in pregnancy are for UTIs, and most OB-GYNs use the ones on the ‘safe’ list,” she added.

Gerald Briggs, a pharmacist clinical specialist who wrote about this topic on BabyCenter, said that nitrofurantoin should be halted for urinary tract infections at about 36 weeks due to the risk it could destroy Baby’s red blood cells. He said trimethoprim, which is found in Bactrim and Septra (used to treat UTIs) is not a good option during pregnancy because it blocks the effects of much-needed folic acid.

Prince George Looks Very Chill as He Starts His First Day of School

It was another big day for the royal family as Prince George arrived for his first day of primary school. Luckily, he and his father, Prince William, got to skip any sort of pesky car line or silly school bus business as they pulled up in a secure private car to drop the young prince off.

People magazine noted that the royals were met privately by the Head of the Lower School, Helen Haslem, at Thomas's Battersea in London. It appeared the George wasn't too apprehensive as he met Haslem shaking her hand at first while he holding his father's hand tightly before walking into the school holding both adults' hands. How precious is he?

The 4-year-old will reportedly be known as George Cambridge at school. Since he technically doesn't have a surname, it would appear he's adopting a surname from the royal titles of his parents. Even if it is an adopted surname, you have to admit: it still sounds as regal as anything.

While this isn't George's first time at school, this is his first time attending a school in London. Following his family's relocation to Kensington Palace so that Prince William can focus his time on his charitable work as well as his royal duties. That means a new school and a whole new set of friends for the youngest prince, which must be very exciting.

Of course, George's mother, Kate Middleton, was not in attendance for her son's first day of school because she is currently resting from complications in her third pregnancy due to hyperemesis gravidarum. According to an official statement from Kensington Palace, as reported by People, the Duchess of Cambridge is resting. "Unfortunately The Duchess of Cambridge remains unwell, and will not be able to accompany Prince George on his first day of school. The Duke of Cambridge will drop off Prince George this morning as planned."

It looks like George is very ready to head to school at any rate and why wouldn't he be? There's a tradition of royal men looking very excited to attend school, as evidenced by the adorable throwback photo posted by Kensington Palace to celebrate George's first day.

This Keychain Could Change the Lives of People With Food Allergies

Anyone who suffers from a food allergy knows how tricky it can be to eat anywhere outside your own home. Whether it’s a business lunch at a restaurant or Thanksgiving dinner at your new partner’s aunt’s house, not knowing exactly what goes into your food or how it’s prepared can be the cause of anxiety and possibly a nasty allergic reaction.

But what if there were a small, portable device that could detect common food allergens, preventing you from eating something that could make you sick? Thanks to some researchers, that might soon be the case.

More: Don't Let Food Allergies Ruin Your Life

The American Chemical Society’s journal ACS Nano reported that a new device is under development that would cost around $40 and function as a portable allergen-detection system called “integrated exogenous allergen testing” — or iEAT. Unlike previously existing equipment for detecting allergens — which primarily consist of bulky lab equipment — the iEAT is the size of a keychain and contains allergen sensors, which transmit the food test results to a smartphone.

More: 8 Apps for People With Food Allergies & Intolerances

ACS Nano reported that within 10 minutes, the device could detect five allergens — wheat, peanuts, hazelnuts, milk and egg whites — at levels that would have been undetectable with even the highest-level lab equipment. For example, the iEAT found gluten in what would appear to be a gluten-free salad and egg protein in beer.

For now, the prototype was designed to sniff out the five previously mentioned allergens, but researchers indicated that future models could be programmed to test for other allergens as well as nonfood contaminants such as pesticides.

10 Design Tips for a Kid's Room That Lasts

Did you get all psyched to decorate your newborn's nursery only to learn that "child time" moves really fast and now all of a sudden you have a full-blown kid on your hands? It's one thing to get rid of the crib and changing table, but are you really expected to conduct a full redesign every time your kid moves up a grade and/or decides she's now obsessed with turtles instead of elephants? What about when he starts having sleepovers? Are you required, as a parent who is supportive of your child's grade-school social life, to install bunk beds?

No you are not.

The trick to designing a kids' room that stands the test of time — and varying tastes — is to approach it like any other room. Those living room pillows, throws, tchotchkes and artwork that you rotate out whenever you get bored? Those are the adult equivalent of kids'-room mobiles, string lights, bulletin boards, stuffed animals... you get the idea.

We spoke with two interior designers on how to avoid the constant kid-room revamp — turtle obsessions be damned.

More: 9 Designer Hacks for Decorating in Small Spaces

Invest in "adult" furniture
"A bed, a dresser, a nightstand, a shelf and a lamp can live in your child's room until they are ready for college. Pick neutral pieces to keep the basis of decor simple — so you can work around them for years to come," explains Melissa Milakovic, founder of Canadian design company Joydom Design.

Donna Mondi (of Donna Mondi Interior Design) agrees: "Always choose adult furniture so you aren’t replacing major pieces every couple of years," she says. "If you decide to go with a wall covering, never choose a juvenile print; instead, select a simple pattern that would work for a baby or an adult."

That means... skip the twin bed
"Kids don't need to transition from a tiny bed that's shaped like a truck to a twin to a full to a queen," explains Milakovic. "And you certainly don't need to purchase a new bed and mattress every few years until they're 15."

Mondi concurs. "When your little buddy is ready for a big-kid bed, go straight to a full or queen. I love a good upholstered bed, so I can change out the fabric every few years without buying a whole new one."

The bedroom should feel calm & soothing
That means steering clear of bright colors and wild patterns. White is always a great option, as are "muted, warm and dark colors that will create a cozy space for your kid," explains Milakovic. That said...

Never let a child choose a paint color
"It’s hard enough for adults to understand what a color from a small strip is going to look like on the wall!" laughs Mondi. "A child can’t be expected to do this well... What looks good in a crayon color doesn’t always translate." Instead, let your kid pick the general color — pink, green, blue, etc. Then, choose the perfect shade ("one that won’t give you anxiety," Mondi urges) yourself.

Still, "because paint is a simple way to change a room, you don't need to worry too much about choosing a timeless color as much as something both you and your child will enjoy for now," Milakovic adds. "Painting a wall in two or three years isn't as much of an investment as replacing wallpaper or bedroom furniture."

More: 10 Newborn Items You Should Never Buy New

Be playful & childlike in accessorizing
Milakovic is adamant that "the goal of a child's room shouldn't be 'magazine-ready'; it should be 'kid-friendly.'" Amen. So feel free to go live with the glow-in-the-dark star stickers and hanging up your kid's artwork. Other than that, "bedding, pillows and a rug are also easy to replace over time," she adds. "And maybe a plant or two! A fun way to get them caring for a living thing — without getting a puppy."

Remember how messy kids are
Mondi, a mother herself, is also a fan of rug-replacing. "Keep the rug, bedding and accessories affordable so you won't freak out with the first nail polish spill," she says. "Instead, I like to put money in the walls (durable choices, of course), ceiling and overhead lighting."

Incorporate wall tattoos
But there's no need to spend wall dollars if you don't have to; these are pretty low-commitment and low-cost. Plus, "their simple installation and removal makes this a great option to completely transform a space," Mondi explains. "Still, I'd select a graphic that would be feasible in an adult room too."

More: 7 Montessori Tricks to Transform Your Child's Room

It's OK to personalize...
So many kids' interests change constantly — seemingly overnight. ("My favorite thing is bugs! No, painting! I mean, space travel!" said every kid ever). But don't stress about longevity here. "It’s OK to let them customize their rooms," Mondi assures us. "My rule is to do it in a way that isn’t so permanent or expensive. For example, I designed a room for my son with a cool millwork-grid feature wall that was painted in an earthy Mondrian style. This backdrop lasted for years! The changes came with the items that were hung within the grid: colorful skateboard decks, guitars, artwork. Bonus: It was easily adaptable for a guest room once he was in college."

...just make sure the "theme" is easily replaceable
Again: bedding, accessories, artwork. "Your kid won’t want a princess room forever," Mondi says. "Hop on Etsy for inexpensive art to make them feel like a royal — without investing in a full-blown canopy situation they'll hate in a few years."

Most important: Keep it simple
This is, after all, a room for a kid — and probably not a celebrity kid, either. "Children don't need added distraction when they're off to sleep," explains Milakovic, "so a simple, thoughtfully decorated room with a few of their favorite things is all you (and they) should need."

Sounds like solid design wisdom all our grown-up rooms could use too.

ABC Cast The Bachelor & It's the Most Disappointing Yet

So, Bachelor Nation, we got some big news this morning. The next Bachelor has been announced, and if you heard his name and had to kind of squint and tilt your head and think to yourself, "Who is that guy?" then you're not alone.

More: Wait — Could Nick Viall Actually Be the Bachelor Again?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the next leading man of The Bachelor will be Arie Luyendyk Jr., who last competed on the show during Emily Maynard's season in 2012. He hasn't been on Paradise or anything since then. In fact, he hasn't been on TV at all. Sure, he was a fan favorite by the end of Maynard's season — again, this was all the way back in 2012 — but, uh, wouldn't that have been the time to make him the next Bachelor?

We're not the only ones who are royally confused by this casting decision. Bachelor Nation has been reacting rather strongly to this news on Twitter, and pretty much no one is a fan.

Typically, the new Bachelor comes from the previous season of The Bachelorette. Fan favorite Peter Kraus, who was runner-up in Rachel Lindsay's season, was rumored to be this year's pick, and honestly, we're still pretty confused about why it isn't Kraus. THR revealed that the casting was a last-minute decision and Kraus was planning on taking the job until he was told this week that he no longer had it. It's also not the first time The Bachelor has done a last-minute switch like that. If you recall, Nick Viall took Luke Pell's place just days before Pell was set to fly out to begin filming.

We'll likely still be scratching our heads over this until the new season starts airing. Hopefully, when The Bachelor premieres, some light will be shed on this odd, surprising casting choice.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West Are Expecting a Baby Girl Via Surrogate

Multiple sources are dishing some serious scoop on the Kardashian-West baby on the way: It's a girl.

We confess we're a little bit worried about Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West's 4-year-old daughter, North, who is already struggling with hard-core sibling rivalry with her brother, Saint, 21 months. How is she going to fare once East West or Apostle West arrives on the scene in January 2018? (Note: The baby's name has not been confirmed, but the Kardashian-Wests make it easy to guess.)

Kim and kids

Kim and kids

On Aug. 28, Kardashian West said during her stint as guest host on Live with Kelly & Ryan, "I don't know if it's because [North] is the older sister; I don't know what it is. I thought it was a phase. She does not like her brother, and it's so hard for me."

Kardashian West continued, "She gets so jealous when I would breastfeed and all that kind of stuff. And now, the phase isn't going away. Her thing is she thinks she's outsmarting me. She's like, 'We're having a tea party, Mom. No boys allowed. Dad can't come too, then.' And she'll just slam the door on her brother's face. He'll just start crying."
Poor Saint. Fortunately, he seems pretty chill in all of Kardashian West's Instagram pics of him — maybe the rivalry is harder on Kardashian West than it is on the kids?

Kardashian West and West opted for surrogacy after Kardashian West experienced some terrifying complications with her first two pregnancies (Google "placenta accreta" if you have a tough stomach). Us Weekly revealed that a source — don't you love those mysterious creatures? — reported the surrogate is due to deliver the mega-power-couple's third child sometime in January 2018.

Another bonus to having a surrogate carry their child? No adult diapers for Kardashian West post-birth. (Because honestly, newborns are gross enough sometimes without having to worry about getting your period for eight weeks straight.)

Anyway, let the girl-name frenzy begin! We're still holding out for a compass direction, but Apostle could work — or hey, how about Sinner? No? Not even if you spell it "Cynner"? Really, we don't know why more celebrities don't let us name their babies for them.

Lara Trump Shamed for Working Out While Pregnant

We won't get into politics (since it's likely you've had your fill of that, as have we) but we will say this: Nobody should be shaming a woman — any woman — for how she looks or what she does during her pregnancy. Especially if her "inappropriate" action is... exercising.

On Sept. 5, Lara Trump — wife of Eric Trump, daughter-in-law of some politician, IDK — posted a video on Instagram of herself lifting weights and doing some lunges. While pregnant. Who cares?

Silly us. Of course the internet cares.

Lara Trump

Lara Trump

Her caption was relatable to overdue pregnant women everywhere. "Hoping the workout inspires this baby to make an appearance." Fair enough.

But Trump's followers on Instagram were apparently unhappy with how she looked in her third trimester. "You don't look full term," said one. "Prayers for you and that baby."

Another helpful (not) commenter simply shouted in all caps: "SMALL."

More: Kate Middleton Suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum — Again

Even worse, commenters warned of impending miscarriage: “I lost a pregnancy doing just that! Please be careful," said one. What a terrible thing for that woman to experience. However, pregnancy — and miscarriage — is super-complicated, and super-, super-individual. There's absolutely no reason one pregnant exerciser is doomed to miscarry just because another one did.

Another said ominously, “You be careful young lady... your baby will come when he’s ready." Um, thanks?

Trump's baby — a boy — is due this month. According to Fox News, the couple told the whole family about the pregnancy on Inauguration Day after Lara discovered she was pregnant with their first child on Eric’s birthday in January. “It was a nice birthday surprise for him,” she said. And it's great the family had happy news to get them through an epic day.

Politics aside, can everybody just lay off the pregnant person, OK? We all carry differently, every fetus gestates differently, and some women prefer lunges to lasagna in the third trimester. Stop judging.

Scandal's Katie Lowes Is Leaving Gender Up to Her Kid

"Is it a boy or a girl?" Well, Scandal actor Katie Lowes and her husband, Adam Shapiro, are definitely expecting a baby — but they don't know and don't care about the kid's gender. And it's not up to them, anyway.

To be clear, Lowes does know the sex of her baby: "Our son will be born with male parts," she said in a recent interview with Fit Pregnancy. "But we have no idea what he will identify as or what his sexual orientation will be. I wish, now more than ever, to just please let my son be healthy and happy and safe. That’s all that matters."

Katie Lowes

Katie Lowes

Damn. We couldn't love Lowes' attitude any more — and we hope to hear it more from parents everywhere. Maybe it won't be long before we finally ditch the gender stereotypes (and awful pastel hues) that come with the pronouncement of "It's a boy!" or "It's a girl!" Because the sex a person is assigned at birth doesn't actually get at the question of that person's eventual gender identity — not even close.

We're especially impressed by Lowes' free-thinking approach to the antiquated issue, especially since she thinks of herself as a "type-A planner."

More: Can We Stop Calling "Gender-Neutral" a Parenting Trend?

Lowes wasn't completely immune to the suspense of finding out the baby's sex, despite her chill attitude about gender.

“We wanted to find out the sex of the baby," she said, "so I had my doctor write it on a card that my husband, Adam, picked up. We drove to this beautiful area of California called Meditation Mount, which at sunset has a stunning view of a valley. I opened [the card] that said ‘It’s a boy!’... A moment later, I was crying with happiness.”

More: My Child Came Out as Transgender — Now What?

Lowes and Shapiro were both nannies in the past (um, best parents-to-be ever?); in fact, Lowes used to nanny for actor/singer Connie Britton's kids. So having a baby is not a big, scary thing for the couple according to Lowes.

Well... at least the parenting part is not so scary. Lowes is a little freaked out about the actual delivery: “I do feel completely petrified about how my son is getting out of my body,” she said. Don't worry, Katie — we have a sneaking suspicion the kiddo will figure it out just fine.

Robert De Niro's Hotel Was Destroyed By Hurricane Irma

Hurrican Irma is currently headed for the Florida coastline but already leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Multiple people have died as Irma has all but levelled the entirety of the Caribbean and that includes Barbuda, the island where Robert De Niro's hotel was located.

According to multiple outlets, Irma has absolutely devastated the island of Barbuda, where about 1,600 people live. The hurricane made landfall on Barbuda early Wednesday morning with winds hitting 185 mph, and Prime Minister Gaston Browne told reporters that the island is now "barely habitable." He also said he predicts it will cost at least $150 million to repair the damage Irma caused, adding, "That is no exaggeration. It is just total devastation. Barbuda is literally a rubble."

De Niro is a principal investor in Barbuda's Paradise Found Nobu Resort. As of now, it's unknown how much damage was done to the resort, since communication and access to Barbuda are still cut off. De Niro issued a statement Thursday saying he would do his part to help the small island community rebuild from Irma, which is admirably altruistic of him.

More: Donald Trump Made Robert De Niro a Very Angry Man

"We are beyond saddened to learn of the devastation in Barbuda caused from Hurricane Irma and look forward to working with the Paradise Found Nobu Resort team, the Barbuda Council, GOAB and the entire Barbuda community to successfully rebuild what nature has taken away from us," he wrote.

Meanwhile, Barbuda's residents are without water or phone services and Browne said aid has so far been unable to reach the island. "It was difficult to send in any boats there today because things are still very dangerous," he explained. "Within the next 18 hours we intend to mobilize a significant amount of resources to send over to Barbuda to provide some temporary relief."

As Hurricane Irma is expected to make landfall in the U.S. over the weekend, our thoughts are with everyone in its path. We should also give appreciation to De Niro, who is stepping in to help during this time and not only to serve his own professional interests but the entirety of Barbuda, too.

“Whether it’s Cookie from Empire, Queenie from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Yvette from Baby Boy, or rocket scientist Katherine Johnson from Hidden Figures, they’re characters. As for the real me, I’m just a girl who went to Hollywood with my son, $700, and a dream. There were some detours along the way, some heartache, and a whole lot of hustle.”
