10 Under-the-Radar State Parks to Put on Your Bucket List

State parks, quite literally, are a national treasure. These protected areas are kind of the last bastions of nature in our crazy teched-out world — and they are so necessary to visit in order to unplug and connect with ourselves, our families and the Earth. It sounds cheesy, but it's true.

And there are over 6,000 state parks in this country — 6,000! Obviously, that's too many to explore and too many to know unless you dedicated your entire life to scoping out each and every one (which wouldn't be that bad a gig now that we think about it). They're all amazing, but it seems like there's just a handful that are always getting all the good press — so how are we supposed to find which lesser-known parks we really shouldn't miss?

Because we love y'all so much, we went ahead and did the research and found some of those parks unknown that are worth the adventure.

1. Makoshika State Park, Montana

Montana's state parks kinda get the shaft thanks to Yellowstone and all, but Makoshika is definitely one to add to your must-see list. Not only does the 11,000-acre wilderness offer view-filled hiking, but the park is most notable for its dinosaur fossils. That's right. You can get up close and personal with some prehistoric fossils while getting your hike on.

2. Little Missouri State Park, North Dakota

Don't be confused by the name. Little Missouri State Park is actually located in North Dakota, and it isn't that little. The park is a hidden gem because most of the 30-mile trails are only accessible by horseback or hiking. It's worth the trek through the remote expanse that has been described as a "scenic wonder."

3. Starved Rock State Park, Illinois

Check out Starved Rock State Park for its hiking trails. You'll come back for the views. Thanks to a river running through the canyon and a lake, you can also camp, fish and boat at this state park. With 18 canyons and 13 miles of hiking trails, this park isn't just Instagram-worthy, it's remember-it-for-a-lifetime-worthy.

4. Kodachrome Basin State Park, Utah

Utah is one of the hottest scenic destinations. And while national parks like Zion and Bryce Canyon get a lot of the publicity, Kodachrome Basin deserves a spot on the list. The colors are so vivid in this state park that the National Geographic Society expedition named it Kodachrome after the 1948 color film.

5. Slide Rock State Park, Arizona

Arizona is rich with interesting landmarks to enjoy aside from the Grand Canyon. Escape the scalding summer heat by heading to Slide Rock, so named for the natural water slide that formed by the slippery bed of Oak Creek. Basically, it's like a natural water park.

6. Crater of Diamonds State Park, Arkansas

Maybe I just love this park because the saying is true — diamonds really are a girl's best friend. Really, I like to think that it's my inner child excited by the idea of discovering something never before seen with the human eye. Because that's exactly the opportunity you have while exploring Crater of Diamonds. You see, it's named because there are actual diamonds here, and if you find one, you get to take it home.

7. Natural Bridges State Beach, California

The name is pretty straightforward, folks. But the breathtaking beach views aren't the only thing Natural Bridges offers. There's tons of sea life, so you're sure to glimpse sea stars, anemones, crabs and more. Even better, the beach is known for its monarch butterfly migration, which you can experience in the fall.

8. Ha Ha Tonka State Park, Missouri

Ha Ha Tonka not only offers the most fun park name on this list, but it also has a castle. That's right. You can check out the ruins of a castle that was built in 1905 while you hike among the 13-mile trails the park offers. There are also sinkholes, natural bridges, caves and a lake to explore.

9. Cathedral Caverns State Park, Alabama

Cathedral Caverns was originally known as the Bat Cave. Need I say more? Aside from exploring this cave of wonder, you can also camp, hike the trails, go zip-lining and fish. It's the perfect spot for the whole family.

10. Wood-Tikchik State Park, Alaska

My parents are big Alaska buffs. Random, I know, but my father is a huge outdoorsman and fisherman, and we have family that lives up there. I bring it up because my father loves the Wood-Tikchik State Park, mostly because I think he just loves saying the word "Tikchik." I kid, I kid. The fun-to-say name is far from the only awesomeness the park offers. From hiking to floating down the river, you won't regret taking in this breathtaking scenery.

Where to Get School Supplies for Free This Year (Yup, Free!)

Let's be real, having kids costs a lot of money — and back-to-school supplies are super expensive. Those lists sent home from schools add up in a hurry, and we all feel the pinch.

More: After School Snack Skewers Are the Perfect Easy Treat

If you have more than one kid, the cost of school supplies can skyrocket quickly, especially if you have high schoolers that require even more high-tech wares. The good news is that there are ways to get creative — and figuring out how to get supplies on the cheap is possible.

Here are some of our favorite no-cost school supply resources to bookmark and pin on Pinterest for later.

1. Clothing swap

This idea is one shade of brilliant because there is more than likely to be a clothing swap hosted in your local area. You can start by searching for Facebook events put on by local youth or parenting groups that allow you to bring your own gently used kids’ clothes to earn you "tickets" in the swap. Swap.com is a specialty site that serves the same purpose; with beginning-of-the-year deals on girls’ and boys’ school clothing.

2. Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has made it their aim in years past to help parents offset the increasing cost of school supplies. The Salvation Army hosts a number of distribution events and encourages parents to contact their local chapter for more information on back-to-school assistance. The organization is also looking for donations and volunteers for these events.

3. Kids in Need Foundation

Kids in Need’s mission is simple — to ensure that every child is ready to learn and succeed by providing them with free school supplies when needed. Last year, Kids in Need helped more than 4.8 million students in challenged communities, out of the estimated 16 million kids who come from families in extreme poverty. Through the School Ready Supplies program, Kids in Need donates free school supplies to students through their teachers, not directly to individuals, parents, schools or organizations.

4. Operation Homefront

Operation Homefront, an organization that provides military families with outside help, also reaches out in the way of school supplies with their Back-to-School Brigade. Backpacks and school supplies will be distributed for free to military kids at events throughout the country. The program is also partnered with the Dollar Tree to provide more opportunities for pickup and distribution.

5. Office Depot Backpack Program

To mark the 16th year of its award-winning National Backpack program, the Office Depot Foundation will be donating 200,000 backpacks decorated with kid-friendly designs. According to Office Depot, millions of kids head out to school each morning using pillowcases or plastic bags to carry their textbooks and school supplies.

6. Local back-to-school events

To take advantage of these types of events, you may have to keep an eye on your local calendar. In 2016, a community in Hillsborough County, Florida, hosted a back-to-school bash to help minimize the rising cost of school supplies, where parents were provided supplies and other related items free of charge. Similar events are hosted in most states throughout the U.S.

7. Craigslist

Depending on the size of your city, this may work like a charm. Under the "For Sale" section of each Craigslist region, you can click on the option for "free stuff." There, you can search by keyword for any number of items people are giving away for free — including school supplies. During the back-to-school season, you may find several businesses or individuals posting free school supply promos or giveaways for kiddos who may need some extra help.

8. Free software

For kids in that pricier high school group who may be taking classes in photo editing or graphic design where Photoshop is used, you can thankfully avoid paying anywhere from $10-$80 per month by using a free software instead. Another option is Gimp, an open-source image editing project and popular alternative to Photoshop that comes highly recommended for photo editing by the tech crowd — at no cost to you.

What's a Healthy Weight for Cats? The Numbers Probably Aren't What You Think

$

OK, if we're being totally honest here, we totally love a fat cat. They're fluffy, adorable and usually have just the right amount of sass. What's not to love? The health problems, that's what. Unfortunately, a couple of extra pounds on a tiny animal like a cat can be a serious danger to their health — and considering that the average domestic cat should weigh no more than 10 pounds, a lot of our kitties should be hitting the treadmill, ASAP.

If your cat falls within the 59 percent of cats that are overweight or obese, here's what you can do to get their health back on track.

Face the facts

It may look cute when a kitty is chubby, but the health outlook for a fat cat is actually quite dismal. Just like humans, extra weight puts cats at risk for many serious health problems. Diabetes mellitus, arthritis, heart and respiratory disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, skin problems, some forms of cancer and a shorter life span are just some of the risk factors that come with feline obesity. You want to keep your cat around as long as possible — and extra weight on their frame isn't going to do them any favors.

But how do you know if your cat is overweight?

More: Why Are Cats So Obsessed With Boxes?

So what's a healthy weight?

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, the following weight ranges are appropriate for healthy cats. Keep in mind that because they are so small, a couple of extra pounds on an animal like a cat is much different than a few extra pounds on you. If you are concerned, it is always best to check with your veterinarian.

  • Domestic cat: 8-10 lbs
  • Persian: 7-12 lbs
  • Siamese: 5-10 lbs
  • Maine coon: 10-25 lbs

Next Up: How does your cat measure up?

Originally published February 2013. Updated July 2017.

{pageBreak}

How does your cat measure up?

We know there's nothing simple about getting a cat to sit on a scale. Fortunately, it's pretty simple to determine if your cat is overweight without knowing the numbers. Try these tricks to determine if your kitty is on the healthy side of the scale or not.

  1. Can you feel your cat's ribs? You should be able to feel each rib distinctly with just a little fat covering beneath the skin. If your cat's ribs are visually protruding, your cat is too thin. If you cannot feel his ribs at all, your cat is obese.
  2. When you look at your cat from above, can you see his waist? A cat's waistline should go inwards. If your cat does not have a distinct waist or if it protrudes outwards, it is likely that your cat is overweight.
  3. Check the bony areas of your cat's body. You should be able to feel the bones of the spine, shoulders, hips and base of the tail. There will be a slight fat covering, but the bones should feel prominent.

  4. When you view your cat from the side, does it have an abdominal tuck? Is the diameter of the cat's waist smaller than its ribcage? If so, your cat is within a healthy weight range. If the waist is the same size or larger than the ribcage, your cat is likely to be carrying extra weight.

Visit your veterinarian

If you think there's a possibility that your cat might be overweight, he probably is. Schedule a visit with your veterinarian as soon as possible. They can confirm your cat's weight issue and help you formulate a plan to get him back on track. He'll also confirm that your cat is healthy enough to begin a diet.

The weight loss plan

Weight issues with cats are pretty similar to the weight issues humans deal with. Weight gain happens when cats take in more calories than they work off, making it more common in house cats than in animals that spend large amounts of time outside. To help your cat lose weight, cut his calorie intake and encourage him to be more active.

It's not easy to get a cat to exercise, but you can make a big difference through play. Get him to play with toys or chase a flashlight around a room.

Don't expect to see big results fast. Healthy weight loss happens slowly. Ask your vet exactly how much weight your cat needs to lose and how long you can expect the process to take.

'Will & Grace' Star Devastated by Son's Dyspraxia Diagnosis

Will & Grace alum and Good Luck Charlie star Leigh-Allyn Baker was devastated to find out that her 8-year-old son, Griffin Samuel, has dyspraxia.

A developmental disorder that can affect coordination (standing on one foot, writing or just holding a pencil, getting dressed), dyspraxia can make daily life difficult for an affected child.

In Griffin's case, the dyspraxia manifests as frequent falls and dropping items. His mom explained that he showed no symptoms until he was a little more than 3 years old.

“It was then that we noticed a pretty big change,” Baker told People. “He never chose a dominant side with his hands. That was the first clue. He used both hands to pretty much do everything.

“He’s far advanced in many areas, but then there are other areas like standing on one foot, holding a pencil or writing that are just extremely difficult for him,” she added.

More: How to help kids with special needs stay organized

A year or so later, Griffin's preschool also noticed some abnormalities in coordination. Griffin was having trouble putting on his own jacket, socks and shoes, so his teachers suggested that Baker give an occupational therapist a try and request an in-depth assessment.

Baker was stunned by the diagnosis.

“He was assessed for two sessions — an hour and a half to two hours each — and I thought they were gonna tell me his hands are a little weak and he needs to play with Legos,” she explained. “I’ll never forget, she just said, ‘So, Griffin has dyspraxia.’

“I didn’t make a noise, tears just rolled down my face. I’ve never experienced that kind of emotion before," Baker said of the moment.

In August, Baker will be participating in a Facebook Live chat with Dyspraxia Foundation USA in hopes of enlightening others about the disorder and helping other parents cope with their child's disorder.

More: Is your child struggling at school?

Unfortunately, some aren't diagnosed with dyspraxia until later in life. Stephanie Guidera, a classical singer from Liverpool, England, was diagnosed at 20 after struggling with issues for years.

"Dyspraxia is like the physical version of dyslexia," she said in a video for BBC News.

Leigh Allyn-Baker hopes to help Griffin as much as he can before his adult years. She acknowledged that hearing “a big scary name” like dyspraxia can be an overwhelming experience.

“I always feel like if I just had a crystal ball to see what his future would be like, I could breathe. I could relax more,” she said.

Despite deficits in balance — and some muscle weakness and fine-motor skills problems — Griffin continues to thrive and is a creative, imaginative, outgoing boy.

More: 7 summer chore ideas to keep bored kids busy

His mom is committed to finding new ways to help Griffin's coordination and brain function to "give him the best shot for his future possible."

Baker said, “We have to adapt to situations. Life is alive and always on the move."

5 Tricks for Getting Babies & Toddlers to Look at the Camera

$
0

Fess up, Mama: You used to take artsy shots of sunsets, award-winning dishes at Michelin-star restaurants and candidly staged shots from vacations to exotic hot spots around the world. These days? You get that "storage full" message from your iPhone weekly thanks to your paparazzi-style method of documenting Baby’s every movement.

No matter how old your children become, how far away they roam or how annoyed they are when you take another photo of them, you’ll forever treasure images of your little ones. The only downfall of being an amateur photographer is figuring out how to get your tot to actually look at the camera, a skill that’s mastered by lifestyle photographers. Award-winning family and wedding photo master Victoria Grace has let us in on the secrets of capturing that frame-worthy shot.

More: 26 brilliant hacks for new moms

1. Have a conversation about something they like

If you have a toddler, it’s often those perfectly timed moments that make for the best images. Unfortunately, even if the lighting is killer and your tot has yet to mess up their pigtails, if they’re not engaging with the camera, your image might not live up to your expectations. To get kids to connect with her, Grace gets the scoop on the child’s favorite things before starting the shoot. “I'm usually pretty good at catching a genuine smile when I ask kids engaging questions. I might say something like ‘Who is your favorite Paw Patrol puppy?’ which gets them excited,” she shares.

2. Invite Grandma over

Drooling over the idea of photos from your upcoming family getaway? If you want to be in the sweet photos with your kids or you’re trying to capture a family photo, it might be tough to have a stranger capture your seaside dinner night. Budget permitting, consider taking your mom or mother-in-law along for the vacation. Having a grandparent take the photos could be helpful because the kids recognize — and love — this person, says Grace, making them more likely to maintain eye contact.

More: What are the differences between preschools?

3. Challenge them to "see themselves"

Once your toddler is old enough to be defiant, you might struggle even more to get them to look in your general direction, especially when you have your iPhone in hand. (In fact, they might ignore you just out of spite.) Instead of saying "smile for the photo!" Grace suggests challenging your children to take advantage of their competitive nature. "When all else fails, I’ll tell kids if they look into the camera, they can see themselves. A lot of them will really try, making for plenty of eye contact photos," she reveals.

4. Have a wiggle break

Trying your best to get a photo of your firstborn holding your newborn, and they just won’t sit still? Grace says to encourage them to dance it out by making it fun and interactive. "I never shoot more than a few minutes without walking to a new location, taking a wiggle break or letting the kiddo move around a bit. It helps ward off the cranky that comes from sitting still for too long when they'd rather be anywhere else," she says. Once they’ve moved and grooved, she suggests saying something along the lines of 'OK, just a few more photos and we’ll dance it out again!'

More: Age-by-age guide to fun reads

5. Read their favorite book

Have a younger babe that prefers to sleep rather than pose for the camera? Grace says with babies who are under a year old, reading a book can help create beautiful images. While you’re facing your baby, have your partner or an older sibling read their favorite book out loud. They’ll smile as they hear the various parts of the story, giving you time to click away.

7 Ways to Have an Amazing Staycation

Summer's the perfect time to unwind and treat yourself, but you don't necessarily have to travel to an exotic locale to do that. The idea of a staycation, where you do fun things close to home without having to spend the night outside of it, is appealing and affordable. But how do you make it feel really special and ensure that you return to everyday life feeling restored and rejuvenated?

Here are a few things you can do to make a staycation feel like more than just a regular day off.

Eat well

Janelle Welch, a creative director from Virginia, would rather hang at the beach than the mountains. Even when she can’t, indulging in a seafood meal can make her feel like she’s close to the shore. “We love to be at the beach in close proximity to fresh, abundant seafood, so when we need a break but can’t get to the beach, my husband and I plan a mini ‘foodcation,’” Welch said. “We go shopping for fancier foods that are not in our normal weekly rotation, like little-neck clams or lobsters for the grill. We swing by the wine section to grab a couple of bottles of wine that may normally be out of our price range. Last step — break out the fancy china and wine glasses!”

More: 7 Mistakes Parents Make When Traveling With Kids

Skip the beach

Think you have to bake in the sun to make the most of summer? It might in fact be the perfect time to head to the mountains instead… primarily since everyone will be at the beach. Christie Osborne, a California-based marketing director specializing in the wedding industry, suggests that if you live within driving distance of mountains or forests, you can do other super-fun summer activities like biking, hiking or camping. If you’re not into that sort of thing, mountain resorts are also brimming with world-class spas that can make an afternoon pedicure feel like you took a week off.

“The key to a successful staycation in a mountain location is to shift your mindset,” she advised. Pick up a visitor's guide at your local welcome center or chamber of commerce and see the town through the eyes of a visitor. That will make even a day of rafting or hiking seem more like a vacation and less like enjoying a nearby attraction. “You can visit new places or favorite places — it doesn't matter. Just get in that visitor mood and you'll enjoy even favorite activities in new ways,” Osborne said.

Think outside the city box

If you’re an urbanite looking for a getaway, you don’t have to travel far to get outdoors. Andria Arena, a public relations professional from New York City, recommends trying activities you’ve never done — particularly those outdoors — in the city instead of at the beach. Think paddleboating or paddleboarding in a city park instead of on a lake or the ocean.

Soak in a spa

Many of us may visit a salon regularly or even have regular massages, but that’s not the same as indulging at a spa all day. Chelsea LaVere, a wedding and travel editor for Tidewater and Tulle, said that staycations can be great — especially for couples who are homebodies. Something as simple as going to a spa retreat for the day can really help you get a change of scenery, enjoy pampering and truly unwind. Treating yourself or your partner to a series of treatments or simply relaxing in a steam bath can be just what you need to keep your relationship healthy too. “Ask the spa for any special packages for couples to help make it even more memorable,” LaVere added. It doesn't always have to be your anniversary to celebrate, and staycations remind us of that."

More: 5 Ways to Avoid Sabotaging Your Long-Awaited Summer Vacation

Add an overnight

If you can’t get beyond the concept that your staycation is just a day trip, why not stay away from home overnight? Just one night away can work wonders, and you don’t have to travel far to take in an upscale hotel visit instead of a typical motel stay. A few years back, Arena and her family spent a day at the Long Island Aquarium, then stayed overnight at a Marriott before hitting Adventure Land the next day. “After eating at an amazing diner recommended by the hotel, we hung out in the huge outside pool and swam under the stars,” she recalled. “While it was only a two-day trip, we still talk about the memories we made... it was priceless.”

Plan, plan, plan

Arena said the most important way to ensure a successful, relaxing staycation is to get into planning mode. “If you wait until your time off, you are likely to just stay at home... which may not be much of a vacation,” she said. Do your research. While you may find cool deals on different activities from websites such as Groupon, try not to always take the most economical route, as you’re probably saving a ton of money already by not hopping a plane and taking off for a week or two.

Actually unplug

Paula Ramirez, who works for the Historic Mankin Mansion in Virginia, said you may not want to tell anyone that you’re taking a staycation. If you must, be sure to specify that you don’t want any interruptions on the big day. “This will happily prevent distracting phone calls and texts,” she says — something that can turn even just a one-day fun fling into true downtime.

Kelly Ripa Makes Huge Announcement About Ryan Seacrest's Future

The news that die-hard American Idol fans have been waiting for is officially official — Ryan Seacrest is returning as the host for the reboot of the show. Seacrest was so nonchalant about the news that he let his co-host Kelly Ripa announce it on Thursday morning on Live with Kelly and Ryan.

“We’ve been talking about it for a little while, but I am happy to confirm that Ryan Seacrest is returning as host of American Idol,” shared Ripa.

The audience went wild as the AI logo went up on the video screen behind the two hosts. Seacrest likened the cancellation of the show on Fox in 2016 to a 15-year relationship that broke up for unknown reasons.

"The show is going, we thought well, and then all of a sudden we broke up," he said. "I thought it would be great to get back together at some point."

It’s almost like he predicted this day on the final show on April 7, 2016, when he signed off of the last episode of AI on Fox with, “And one more time — this is so tough — we say to you from Hollywood... goodnight, America... for now.”

Ripa thinks Seacrest is the only host who should ever helm the show.

“You are the only person who can host this show,” Ripa proclaimed. “You are the only person who can identify with that scenario.”

Contract negotiations weren’t easy after FremantleMedia, the production company behind AI, lowballed him with a $10 million offer. ABC stepped in and upped the ante and smoothed over some ruffled feathers after Seacrest withdrew his name from consideration.

The commute is going to be brutal too. Seacrest will have to host the show in Los Angeles on Sunday night and then fly overnight to New York to be back in time for his morning show gig and his radio show. If anyone can do it though, it’s Seacrest. He was born to work.

ABC is working hard to sign up talent for the judges’ panel too. Katy Perry is already on board and TMZ reported that Lionel Richie is also on the network’s radar.

The other big mystery is if audiences are clamoring for a reboot only 13 months after the show exited from television. It’s a big risk and a big investment for ABC, but they seem to think the gamble will pay off.

Mickey Mouse Tells Foster Kids They're Getting Adopted

Sometimes, words don't tell the whole story. We're grateful to be living in a time when so many special moments are captured on video — and this moment had us reaching for the tissues for sure.

Courtney and Tom Gilmour of Portland, Pennsylvania, had fostered Janielle, 12, and Elijah, 10, for the past three years. The kids didn't know it, but the Courtney and Tom had just finalized adopting the two children when the family took a trip to Disney World in May.

The Gilmours checked into Magic Kingdom, where each family member was given a button to list a reason for celebrating at Disney — the Happiest Place on Earth.

"We didn't have the adoption date until the Friday before our vacation, but once we got it I thought, 'How cool would it be to give a sign to Mickey?'" Courtney told E! News. "When we got down there we sent out pictures on Twitter of our buttons. Ours said, 'Adopting Our Kids.' Theirs said, 'Getting Adopted.'"

And that's when the Disney magic really kicked in.

The folks at Disney World's Twitter account reached out to the family and asked what Disney could do to make the adoption reveal extra special. Courtney thought that meant they might all get a special dessert — but Disney had a bigger moment in mind.

"They e-mailed me... to set up a private meet and greet with Mickey," Courtney said. She filmed the big surprise moment inside the Town Street Theater — and on July 6, shared the footage on Facebook.

Cue happy cry.

The video is worth watching in its entirety, but in summary, it shows Mickey Mouse bantering with the kids and signing autograph books, then presenting Janielle and Elijah with a sign showing the date May 24, 2017 — their official adoption date.

More: Domestic adoption isn't as scary or impossible as it may seem

Both children immediately burst into happy tears. And we totally didn't. Nope. Not even one tear.

"This went better than we had hoped," Courtney wrote in her video caption. "They were beyond shocked and we were beyond emotional."

Almost 2 million people have watched the video, and it's been shared almost 20,000 times. The Gilmour family is overwhelmed by all the love being sent their way from across the globe.

"The response has been awesome and overwhelming," said Courtney. "I was just sharing it to share it but it's taken on a life of its own."

More: How to talk thoughtfully about adoption

Courtney added, "Its [sic] put foster care in a positive light that doesn't always get shone."

The adoption is now final and the Gilmours are a relaxed bunch indeed this summer.

"It feels different in that you don't have to run things by other people, you can make those decisions as a family now. It's their first real summer and we're calling it their summer of freedom. It's amazing to see them live freely," Courtney said.

Nope, there is absolutely nothing at all in our eyes. Nothing. Look away. Go on with your business.

Jada Pinkett Smith Revealed Her Drug-Dealing Past

Jada Pinkett Smith is best known as a fabulous actor and the wife of Will Smith, but at one time, she ran in some pretty controversial circles. She previously kept quiet about her past, but was finally willing to give fans a glimpse into her drug-dealing days in a recent interview with Sway in the Morning.

More: We Talked to Jada Pinkett Smith About Being a Real Nasty Woman

The drug-dealing revelation occurred as Pinkett Smith was discussing her relationship with Tupac Shakur. "One of the things that's very interesting that I've never really said before is that when I first met Pac, I was a drug dealer," Pinkett Smith explained. As you may already know, the two met in high school and were close friends, but as Pinkett Smith began to abandon her troubled lifestyle, Shakur found himself more entrenched in a world that ultimately prompted his downfall.

More: At Least We Can Still Count on Jada & Will Smith to Make Us Believe in Love

"As I was coming out of the life, he was going more into the life." She added that while people have long assumed it was all romance for her and Shakur, the relationship was in actuality a shared struggle for survival. "I know that most people want to always connect it in this romance thing, and that's just because they don't have the story. It was based in survival, how we held each other down and [how] when you have somebody that has your back when you feel like you're nothing, that's everything."

Shakur's sad fate still troubles Pinkett Smith to this day, although she insists that she has no interest in protecting his legacy. However, she sometimes wonders why she was spared and why he succumbed. "I just felt like, 'OK God, one day you're going to do for Pac what you did for me, which is you saved me.' And that just never happened for him. And so that is something that I am constantly having to confront."

It can't be easy for Pinkett Smith to talk about Shakur and her past as a drug dealer, even after all these years. We think she's incredibly brave. She plans to share more in an upcoming book, which will clear up some of the misconceptions she believes the recent biopic All Eyez On Me spread. Until then, we suspect she'll continue to set fans straight in additional interviews and, of course, on Twitter.

3 Skin Conditions That Can Affect Your Vulva

Turns out, dermatologic issues that creep up on your arm can also spring up below the belt.

Several skin conditions may be responsible for the unusual spots or rashes appearing in your vaginal region, making you uncomfortable. Here's what to look for and how to handle it if you find something unusual.

More: 6 skin conditions that look like acne but aren't

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body is triggered to view melanocytes, the specialized cells that provide color to skin, as abnormal. The body then seeks to destroy these pigment-producing skin cells. As a result, white patches appear on the skin, typically in areas over joints like wrists, elbows, knees and ankles.

“We are trying to figure out the trigger that starts the autoimmunity,” says Amit Pandya, a professor of dermatology at UT Southwestern. “Once it starts, it sets into motion a cascade of events, which causes cells to migrate into the skin that attack and kill the melanocytes.”

Many doctors believe that the skin disorder may be hereditary and that people who have vitiligo are predisposed to having it due to certain genes that promote the autoimmunity.

Vitiligo on other parts of the body can be treated with an ultraviolet light to produce some re-pigmentation. But when it affects the genital area, the disorder is generally left untreated.

Lichen sclerosus

This chronic skin condition is characterized by white crinkled or thickened patches of skin that have a tendency to scar. While this condition can affect skin anywhere on the body, it most often affects the non-hair-bearing, inner areas of the vulva. Due to the tightening of sensitive skin, lichen sclerosus can cause severe irritation and soreness, sometimes leading to bruises or ulcers from scratching or minimal friction.

This condition is most common in post-menopausal women, which has led many doctors to believe that it may be caused by a disruption of hormones. Nearly 4 percent of women who experience lichen sclerosus develop vulvar cancer, so patients are often advised to get a biopsy.

“Lichen sclerosus does not cause squamous cell carcinoma, but it’s more common to find this cancer arising from tissues affected by lichen sclerosus,” says Amy Gouley, a physician assistant at Rosario Skin Clinic and founder of Project Happy Face, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to treating disadvantaged teenagers with acne.

Symptomatic patients are often prescribed high-potency topical steroids that can help to soften skin and return skin to its normal appearance.

Contact dermatitis

There are two main types of contact dermatitis: allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when the skin experiences an allergic reaction after being exposed to a foreign substance, such as perfumes or chemicals in skin care products. Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when skin comes into contact with a toxic substance, such as bleach or kerosene. When it comes to the genital region, contact dermatitis is often sparked by new lube or the use of body wash in or around the vagina. As a result, skin may become dry, red and flaky, with the potential formation of small and painful blisters.

“First, you need to avoid scratching the area so that irritation can heal,” says Dr. Joyce Imahiyerobo-Ip of Vibrant Dermatology.  “A mild topical steroid can be used to help to relieve itching.”

GoT Showrunners’ New Show About Slavery Isn't Faring Well

Game of Thrones is the hottest show on television right now, with the dynamic show-running duo of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss taking the reigns from George R.R. Martin and turning his epic fantasy series into a pop-culture phenomenon.

GoT continues to break ratings records and set social media on fire every Sunday night, but with the show wrapping up next fall, HBO is looking for the next needle-moving series that will keep cord-cutters from canceling their expensive cable or satellite package.

More: Don't Freak Out, But Game of Thrones' Days Are Numbered

It looks like HBO is once again teaming with Benioff and Weiss on a new project, but as with anything involving this influential team, it's mired in controversy.

The concept for the still in-progress series, Confederate, imagines a world in which the American South successfully seceded from the United States during the Civil War. This modern setting would portray slavery as a completely legal way of life in the South, featuring characters struggling to end the institution once and for all. The show would also feature people who profit from slavery; combined with the implication that both slaves and slave catchers would be involved in this show, the public has had some strong opinions about the announcement.
Fictional works such as The Man in the High Castle have proven that audiences are certainly curious about alternate-reality historical fiction, but just where viewers draw the line remains to be seen. HBO is one of the few entertainment powerhouses capable of taking artistic chances like these. The network has few qualms about airing controversial programming, but Confederate has already received plenty of negative feedback from people who think that in today's explosive socio-political climate, this show would be counter-productive to easing very real racial tensions in America.
The backlash on Twitter has been swift and harsh.

We'd like to assume HBO would treat the issue of slavery with at least some tact. Hopefully, the network will show the horrible reality of slavery in a fictional world. However, there are plenty of people who feel as though this issue shouldn't receive any attention, regardless of whether or not it's portrayed in a fictional television show.
As plenty of people have pointed out, this has the potential to be the next Game of Thrones — a history-changing show — or completely awful. Only time will tell.

How to Teach Your Kid to Be Body-Neutral

$

If like me, you are new to the concept of body neutrality, you might think it has something to do with the U.N. — or perhaps just imitating Switzerland. However, body neutrality is entirely unrelated to geopolitics. Rather, it’s about finding a mid-ground in your physical acceptance: maybe not passionately in love with yourself — “I look awesome! My elbows are rocking and I truly love my entire abdominal region!” — but also not beating yourself up — “My elbows suck and you could hide buried treasure in my stomach folds. I’m hideous.” Body neutrality means that you’re OK with the skin you’re in.

Of course, that’s easier said than done. Many of us struggle with the concept ourselves. How, then, do we as parents undertake the large and potentially awkward responsibility of teaching it to our kids?

More: Body-shaming: It's not just for girls

The most direct method of teaching behavior is, naturally, to model it. If you demonstrate self-acceptance, your kids are far likelier to mirror it back to you. No problem, right? But maybe you haven’t yet reached body-image nirvana. Self-criticism has a sneaky way of creeping in when we’re unaware. Think about it: do you sigh when you look in the mirror? Talk about something you shouldn’t eat because of the effect it will have on your body? Roll your eyes at the TV when some super-toned celebrity talks about how she got camera-ready in, like, two days after her fifth pregnancy and say, “Yeah, sure — because that’s how you look after having five kids”?

I confess that I’ve been guilty of each of these missteps. Mindfulness of the example you set is your biggest asset. According to a study at La Trobe University, parental modeling includes “expressing negative evaluations about [your] own or others’ bodies… [engaging] in body change behaviors, such as excessive exercising and dieting activities… or [giving] direct instruction, comments, appearance or teasing that reinforces cultural body ideals.” Think about the message you’re sending.

Beyond this, look and listen. Watch how your kids are regarding their own bodies — and those of others — and hear what they are saying about them. If they seem uncomfortable or judgmental, either about themselves or others, ask about it. Comparison and criticism are normal, but talking about it can help to ease overly sharp evaluation.

This is especially important for parents of boys. Body image is often presented as a “girl issue,” and boys are left out of the discussion. But both genders can feel pressured to have a specific physicality. A recent poll in the U.K. found that of 1,000 boys ages 8 to 18, 56 percent believed that eating disorders are a problem for both genders; 55 percent thought dieting was a gender-neutral issue; and 48 percent thought extreme exercising applied to boys and girls equally. Social media and unrealistic (i.e. retouched) media images play a big part in this. Talking about the reasons behind the desire to present the best image, and what might be involved in creating that impression, may help to take back some of that power.

It’s important to recognize, however — both for yourself and for your child — that even neutrality might be a process. Particularly if you’re inclined toward a less accepting stance, getting to a place of balance may be an ongoing exercise, and one that takes time. That’s OK too. As psychologist Bryan Karazsia points out, we have placed a lot of focus on bodies for a very long time. Body neutrality, he says, wants us to move past that and think about why we’re so hung up on the physical anyway. “The sentiment is, ‘Let’s get over bodies already and focus on more important matters,’” Karazsia says.

Connie Sobczak, one of the founders of The Body Positive, an organization dedicated to promoting healthy physical self-image, compares maintaining your body awareness to housekeeping. As she puts it, “Everyone’s home gets messy from time to time and needs some attention. So when your critical voice comes up, just think of it as a closet that is in need of cleaning. You can’t ignore your closet after a certain point, so you open the door and dive into the mess.”

More: Raising body-positive kids after a childhood eating disorder

It may not be easy to silence or even just turn down the volume on the inner critic many of us harbor. For kids already dealing with the wealth of insecurities involved in growing up, it may be an even greater challenge. So, aiming for a massive celebration of the glorious self may be a bit too much to ask. Indeed, many believe that pressure connected to building a more positive perspective is still pressure and is therefore counterproductive. The most sensible approach, then, may be to attempt a neutral stance: aware, accepting and ideally maybe even appreciative of what our bodies can do for us — and less critical of how they appear.

Tabasco's New Scorpion Sauce Is Seriously Spicy

For those of you who like your food hot enough to make you break a sweat, there’s a new sauce from Tabasco that just might leave your ears smoking and your lips burning.

Tabasco is considered among — if not the — classic hot sauces of our time, and now the brand is taking things even spicier with its new Scorpion Sauce, which is said to be a casual 20 times hotter than Tabasco's original recipe. A scorpion pepper comes in at about 2 million Scoville units, making it the second-hottest pepper in the world after the Carolina Reaper. By way of comparison, Tabasco’s original red sauce comes in somewhere between 2,000 and 5,000 on the Scoville scale.

The Scorpion Sauce contains a combo of scorpion peppers blended with guava, pineapple and a touch of the classic sauce. The result is a tangy sauce with lots of heat and a touch of Caribbean sweetness. A brand statement says this sauce is not for the wary but lovers of serious heat.

The brand is also launching another new release, Roasted Red Sauce, which is made with Tabasco peppers slow-roasted over open fire along with garlic, onions, basil and balsamic vinegar. The result is a rich, smoky sauce — this one may pack some heat, but if you want your eyes to water and the sweat to pour, absolutely go for the new Scorpion Sauce variety.

Both the Scorpion and Roasted Red Tabasco Sauces will be available exclusively online and at the Avery Island, Louisiana, retail location (the birthplace of Tabasco) starting this week for a limited time. Just remember: They're not for the faint of heart — or taste buds!

O.J. Simpson Has Been Granted Parole After Serving 9 Years in Prison

The biggest story of the day goes along with the biggest trial of the century: O.J. Simpson has been granted parole from the Lovelock Correctional Center in Nevada.

More: The biggest revelations so far from Caitlyn Jenner's book Secrets of My Life

The former star athlete and live television sensation went up in front of four parole commissioners and was granted freedom after serving his minimum sentence of nine years out of the 33-year sentence from 2008. The sentence comes from his armed robbery and kidnapping of two sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room. But many believe that the longevity of the sentence is in lieu of Simpson’s surprise innocence from his murder trial in 1995.

Simpson, now 70 years old, joined the parole proceedings via video chat from the correctional facility, and as the deliberation came to a close and the vote came through, Simpson kept his head down then brought it up at the confirmation of parole, and smiled. “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” he said. Then as he was led down a hallway in handcuffs, Simpson raised his hands above his head and said, “Oh, God, oh!” in victory.

Simpson could officially be released as soon as October 1.

Even nine years later, one of the dealers that Simpson had the altercation with, Bruce Fromong, spoke and concluded before the hearing that he doesn’t put any fault on Simpson from that day. He said that the athlete never pointed a gun at him (only his accomplice did) and that he deserved to be released so that he can be with his family. “He is a good man. He made a mistake,” said Fromong. He added that the two remain friendly.

“I don’t foresee any problem dealing with the public now, at all,” Simpson said after the news. “Wherever I’ve been there’s been a crowd. That’s not new to me… I’m pretty easily approachable. I’ve dealt with it all my life…”

Simpson has reportedly earned this time off for good behavior, and has requested to live in Florida upon his release.

Jensen Ackles Gave Jared Padelecki A Pretty Bro-Tastic Birthday Gift

Supernatural fans will be happy to know that their demon-hunting bros are still bros deep down, and that they still do keg stands.

More: Supernatural will never be the same after the season 12 finale

During a recent chat on Conan, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles talked about growing up together on and off the set of Supernatural, the long-standing sci-fi show that follows two brothers through the (duh) supernatural world of demons and monsters and all things creepy. The show is set to release a 13th season this fall.

With the new season on the way, the actors reminisced about working on the first season of Supernatural, way back in 2005. Padalecki was 23 years old and Ackles was 27 years old, so basically just kids living the actor’s dream, so much so that they would keep stocked kegs in their trailers during shooting. The two definitely have traits that mirror their characters Dean and Sam Winchester - wild children with no supervision who run around drunk sometimes.

More: Supernatural's Mick may be the key to defeating the British men of letters

But both of them explained that as the show got older, so did they, and a little wiser. The full keg dwindled to half a keg, then pints, then ultimately no kegs at all. So it seems like the two grew with every season, just like their characters, but what does that mean for the actors now with a teenaged show?

It means surprise kegs, of course! As Padalecki was getting nostalgic on Conan, Ackles joined in with the perfect blast from the past - a full keg from Ackles’ own brewing company, Family Business Beer Co. The two revisited their on-set trailer past time on what also happened to be Padalecki’s birthday, and even participated in the ever-important keg stand. Audience members sitting in on the Conan taping posted behind the scenes photos and videos, and we are truly thankful they did.

So while Dean and Sam most likely won’t be doing keg stands in the new season - though you never really know - the two actors are definitely still growing up together and living their best lives.

Property Brothers Drew Scott May Be Engaged, But He's Not Getting Married Soon

Save the date! Well, save the season. Drew Scott of the Property Brothers pair shared details about his upcoming wedding and the future with fiancée Linda Phan.

More: The truth about the feud between Property Brothers and Fixer Upper stars

“We are looking in the spring, but we’ve not set a date,” Drew told Us Weekly about his nuptials. His brother, Jonathan, joked, “It took him seven years to propose, so give him a little time.” The interview with the bros comes after the Chase Home Lending and Google “Search for Home” panel discussion on July 14.

The Brothers’ latest HGTV project, Property Brothers at Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House, comes out this November and will feature some of the exciting things coming up for the couple. After all, any engagement that comes with a show and an alleged “honeymoon house” sounds like a good deal. The twins will be completely renovating Drew and Linda’s new home in Los Angeles.

More: Property Brothers' Drew Scott is losing sleep over wedding planning

“The renovation is going well,” started Drew. “It’s a huge project; this house is going to be beautiful. We’re keeping the original English-inspired architecture. We’re trying to infuse a bit of that Art Deco, old Hollywood glam feel to it.” Sounds very chic, and expensive! But I guess when you’re life is that of a Property Brother, home renovation can be affordable and a labor of love, especially when it’s for a Property Fiancée.

Jonathan had some quick complaints about the project though. “Drew has asked us to dig out and put a 9-foot ceiling in the basement. They don’t [do a lot of basements in L.A.] So the process to get this basement approved has been painstaking. The hoops we’ve had to go through. If it gets pulled off, it’ll be a bigger feat than the waterslide we put in the house in Vegas!”

More: Apparently, Donald Trump likes to watch HGTV on Air Force One

So while the project sounds like a dream, the process sounds like a nightmare. But haven’t people said that about marriage before? It all seems pretty fitting, and I’m sure the house will end up being gorgeous, just like the spring wedding that the cute couple have started planning. Look out for more info about it in the fall with the new show on HGTV.

Why Don’t Dogs Appear to Have Belly Buttons?

$

A quick belly button anatomical review

The umbilicus, or “belly button” as it’s more commonly known, once served as the link between the mother and the unborn child. After birth, the umbilicus is either clamped off and cut with a scalpel (humans) or chewed off (thankfully not human moms, but dog moms), essentially severing a connection that is no longer necessary since the newborn is breathing its own air and is capable of nursing. The little nubbin of cord that’s still attached to the skin of the abdomen eventually shrivels up completely and falls off.

Dogs have belly buttons, they’re just flat

The fact is that all mammals that gestate (develop prenatally) inside a placenta have an umbilicus — and that includes dogs. Yours has one too or he’s an alien dog sent by an advanced intergalactic civilization to live among us and observe us. Assuming he’s not terribly Chewbacca-like and that you can get him to cooperate, you should be able to see a little oval-shaped indentation on the abdominal midline, about halfway between the sternum and the genitals.

Dogs’ belly buttons don’t create big lint-trapping depressions like people’s do, and it’s a good thing since it’s likely that they would get pretty gnarly and require routine maintenance. In people, the “floor” of the belly button is referred to as the umbilical tip, and if it protrudes past the opening to the umbilicus, you’ve got yourself an outie.

My dog’s belly button sticks out — is this a problem?

Great question, and I’m glad you asked, because yes, this can be a problem. The abdominal wall (the apparently solid sheet of muscle that protects the important organs in the abdomen) is fused at its center point by a thin line of connective tissue. Sometimes the two halves don’t completely fuse together, and this typically occurs right at the point where the umbilical cord enters the abdomen and allows the exchange of blood and nutrients while the fetus is developing.

The result of this incomplete fusion of the two halves of the abdominal muscle wall is known as an umbilical hernia. The presence of that hole, or hernia, can spell trouble if abdominal contents, such as the small intestines, herniate (protrude) through that hole and become entrapped. This compromises proper movement of the intestines and threatens to block the passage of intestinal contents — a serious and life-threatening emergency that requires surgery to correct.

Ask PetCoach widget

Ask PetCoach widget

Thankfully, most umbilical hernias are small and can be easily repaired at the time of spaying or neutering the dog. If your veterinarian discovers an umbilical hernia on your dog or puppy, be sure to watch it closely until it can be surgically addressed — if anything protrudes through the hole, you should be able to easily reduce it (gently push it back into the abdomen) with no problem. If you can’t, your dog may have an intestinal entrapment that needs emergency treatment.

Why Are We So Fascinated by Celebrity Body-Shaming?

$

As a journalist and a voluptuous woman, I am so over body-shaming. It’s not only something I deal with in my everyday life, but it happens to famous women with such regularity that it would be hard to ignore even if strangers weren’t calling you fat from passing cars.

Celebrity body-shaming — and even their subsequent “clapping back” — is easily one of my least favorite topics to write about. I have no idea why people want to continue to read about people in the public eye getting called out for having (or not having) a certain body type, but they do. Those are routinely some of the most-read articles in our health section.

What I want to know is why? If I’m going to have to cover this, I’d first like to get to the bottom of our fascination with body-shaming and the response to it and find out why there’s such an insatiable appetite for these stories, which frankly, are all so similar I could make a Mad Libs-style article template at this stage.

More: Sophia Bush Shuts Down Online Body-Shaming in the Best Way

After consulting with a variety of experts, here’s what I found.

1. This type of media coverage can be validating

When we read about celebrities whose bodies are being criticized, it may make us feel better about ourselves, validating that it is, in fact, a real phenomenon.

“We know that if Lady Gaga can be criticized for a half-inch belly ‘roll’ that fat-shaming exists, and we are not imagining this nor being sensitive or crazy,” psychologist Dr. Deb Thompson tells SheKnows. “And when a beautiful, talented and successful woman is body-shamed, we also feel empowered that we are not alone and that this perfectionism and unkindness are ridiculous and wrong.”

2. The push-back is affirming too.

Similarly, when someone hits back at those body-shaming them — like Kelly Clarkson did on Twitter recently — we really can’t get enough because it “affirms all of our rights to body inclusion and appreciation,” Thompson says. We can also get behind it because like the famous person, we want to be seen for our contributions, not just our appearance, she adds.

More: Kelly Clarkson Has No Time for Twitter Body-Shamers

3. Celebrities are exemplars of human potential

According to Robert Herbst, a personal trainer and powerlifter who supervised drug testing at last year’s Olympics in Rio, we’re fascinated by celebrity body-shaming for the same reason we admire athletes: They are held out as examples of what the human body can achieve.

Herbst offers the example of a successful professional baseball player like Aaron Judge, who “at 6-feet 8 inches and 280 [pounds] with a natural swing is the pinnacle of what we all wish we could be.” To show support, people wear a jersey with his name on their back “and in doing so become like him,” he adds.

Along the same lines, he says, celebrities are examples of beauty and talent, and “we feel let down if they get fat.” The same people who are disappointed when someone famous gains weight might also get upset when they try to defend themselves “instead of going to the gym and trying to restore themselves as shiny examples,” Herbst adds.

“We are fascinated and enjoy the whole dispute because it transfers our own guilt and conflict for not exercising and allowing ourselves to get unhealthy and fat,” he notes.

Celebrities also represent some of the most prominent examples of what it takes to be considered “desirable” as a woman, Dr. Elisabeth B. Morray, a clinical psychologist tells SheKnows.

“When we see the airbrushed images of their bodies, we receive powerful messages about how all women are expected to look,” she notes.

4. We don’t like what it says about our own bodies

For many people, the interest in articles about celebrities’ bodies stems from an insecurity about their own bodies.

“When a celebrity is body-shamed, it sends a message that if this person who is supposed to be ‘perfect’ is seen as flawed, what does that say about me and my own body?” Kimberly Hershenson, a New York City-based therapist tells SheKnows.

5. Celebrities who defend themselves are a voice for those who can’t

Ever wish you were able to respond to someone who criticizes you via a huge platform? When famous people defend themselves, they are in the unique position of having their voices heard on an international level, something Hershenson says appeals to those of us who wish they could say those things to individuals who insult us.

“Women at large are waking up from this unrealistic reference of beauty, and we champion the voices of the celebrities who speak up against it, as we see them as a part of the solution within the model/celebrity culture that created it,” says Carol Tuttle, a therapist who has studied the psychology of fashion and beauty and the damaging effects it has on the female psyche.

Not only that, but unlike the days of old Hollywood when celebrities’ private lives were closely guarded by movie studios or exploited by tabloid journalism, now, with social media, they have the opportunity to control their own narratives and what they allow the public to be a part of according to Dr. Ash A. Rupp, clinical lead with the Rosewood Center for Eating Disorders.

6. Social media has made us stakeholders in celebrities’ lives

Along the same lines, social media allows famous individuals to open their lives to the public, creating a sense of intimacy that some of the public may interpret as reciprocal, Rupp says. In other words, if someone offends our friend, they offend us.

“We feel we know them, we have a stake in their lives, we are rooting for them, and when they are bullied or shamed, the public takes this personally because we view them as a part of our friend circle or tribe,” she adds.

Given the constant exposure to celebrities’ lives, we feel like we have an emotional connection with them, Stacy Kaiser, a therapist and editor-at-large of Live Happy says.

“It is hard to watch anyone that you adore or care about be attacked or victimized. Many of us do genuinely care about some celebrities,” she adds.

MoreNo One Should Shame Women for Having Plastic Surgery — Including the President

7. Sometimes, judging other people makes us feel better about ourselves

This is essentially the mission statement of all online trolls, but also applies to people who eagerly consume media that features someone held up as having an ideal body being criticized for their appearance.

“There is a huge gap between the lives we have and the lives the media leads us to believe we could have if we just looked like a movie star,” Morray explains. “Having the chance to criticize celebrities, to knock them down a notch and to focus on their imperfections has the potential to make us feel just a little bit better about ourselves, our lives and our seemingly imperfect bodies.”

Unfortunately, this really isn’t a good thing, as Morray points out, because “in body-shaming celebrities, women can perpetuate the very messages that cause them the most pain.”

So let’s all agree to be less horrible to each other and keep opinions about other people’s bodies — especially women’s — to ourselves.
