How to Stop Your Puppy From Chewing & More

DIY Anti Chewing Spray Video

DIY Anti Chewing Spray Video

Puppies are cute AF, but they can also be tiny little balls of destruction. If your recently adopted puppy is teething, you've probably already learned the hard way how important it is to protect your furniture, shoes and other valuables from their tiny — yet surprisingly sharp — little teeth.

It's easy to tuck those expensive heels away high on a shelf, but you can't exactly hide your coffee table in the linen closet. Instead of crating your puppy for hours or having to watching them like a hawk, mix up a bit of bitter spray with ingredients you already have in your home to create a nontoxic (but totally yucky) formula that will send your dog straight to the chew toys.

Start with something bitter

Vinegar is the main ingredient of most bitter-apple sprays. The tart flavor makes most dogs grimace and will deter them from nibbling your valuables. If the scent of the vinegar bothers you as much as it does your dog, you can also use lemon juice.

The problem with vinegar and lemon juice is exactly what you might imagine: Some dogs may actually like the way it tastes. If that's the case, use both vinegar and lemon juice, or try a pickling spice called "alum" or good, old-fashioned yellow-flavored mouthwash (you know, the really gross stuff). You can also try a pinch of cayenne pepper in the mix, but be careful, as it may stain some surfaces.

Homemade bitter-apple recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup white vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1 cup water
  • Pinch to 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Directions:

  • Pour the ingredients into a 24-ounce spray bottle.
  • Shake vigorously.
  • Test the spray in an inconspicuous spot on your furniture, shoes or other items before spraying it all over.
  • Reapply as needed.

Tips for using bitter-apple spray

For any training tool to work, you have to use it correctly. Follow these tips to ensure you aren't reinforcing the wrong behavior in your dog.

1. Don't spray the bitter apple directly into your dog's mouth as punishment. She'll likely just think you're mistreating her since you probably won't be able to grab the bottle and take action in time. It should be sprayed on the items you don't want her to chew so she reacts negatively and immediately to the behavior.

2. Use an even more diluted version (a tablespoon or two) mixed with water in a separate spray bottle to discourage unnecessary barking or other behaviors. Only use it when the dog is currently engaging in the behavior you're trying to discourage. Put it in the fridge to keep it cold if that provides extra incentive to follow the rules. (Remember to vocalize commands when you spray — you're trying to reinforce obedience of vocal commands, not douse your dog as punishment for annoying you.)

3. If this mix doesn't work, try offering your dog the ingredients, one at a time, to see which one's the most offensive. Increase the amount of whichever ingredient gets the biggest negative response.

4. Accept that not all dogs respond to this type of training. If it doesn't work, try a different approach.

7 Simple Lifestyle Changes Women & Men Can Make to Help Conceive Faster

0
0

It's the age old question: How does one get pregnant, and what's the fastest way to do it? As a fertility researcher and specialist in reproductive health, couples are asking me what they can do to increase their chances of conception all the time. Since every couple is different, there's really no hard and fast answer —but there are some things both partners can do to help things along.

To up your chances for getting pregnant quickly, these are some lifestyle changes you can make.

1. Stop smoking

With this one single change, men can increase their sperm count and motility, while women can reduce their chance of miscarriage. Moreover, studies have shown that women who smoke take longer to conceive and are more likely to experience infertility. Your best bet? Give it up altogether before you begin your fertility journey.

More: I Nearly Died Delivering My First Child — & Then I Got Pregnant Again

2. Cut out that extra cup of coffee

A regular cup of coffee contains lots of caffeine, and some studies suggest that high caffeine intake can be associated with miscarriage and infertility. So, limiting caffeine intake is a good idea. Everything in moderation!

3. Keep cocktails (and wine, and beer… ) in check

While everyone knows to watch the hard stuff while pregnant, it may not be a bad idea to wean yourself off during the conception process too. Studies show that both men and women can benefit from limiting alcohol consumption during this time.

4. Hold off on the hot tubs

There is a reason that the testes are outside the body: they need to be cooler to produce sperm. Frequent trips to the hot tub or sauna can lower the sperm count. It takes two to three months for sperm to develop, so stop heat exposure several months before trying to conceive.

And women, remember: hot tubs and saunas should be avoided in pregnancy!

5. Avoid BPA

Bisphenol A, or BPA — the chemical used to make certain plastics, like water bottles and various containers — is now being linked to lower fertility in men. Switch over to metal water bottles and avoid leaving plastic containers with food or water in a hot car (it's thought to significantly increase the amount of BPA passed to the consumable substance). Women trying to conceive should try to limit their exposure too.

6. Review medications with your doctor

Some women express concern over giving up their medicine while trying to get pregnant: anti-depressants, for example. It's probably possible to keep going with your medical treatment while you and your partner make a baby, but talk to your doctor to find out if any adjustments need to be made. And a note here: over-the-counter nutritional supplements such as FertilityBlend (formulas for both men and women) may be beneficial in helping couples conceive. In a 2006 study, FertilityBlend for Women and FertilityBlend for Men were found to have a positive impact on conception with no significant side effects. Talk to your doctor about making this part of your fertility health plan.

7. Check out your surroundings

Various environmental factors have been linked with fertility levels. If you're having trouble conceiving, where you live might play a role: visit the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry for more information if you suspect toxins in your community.

An Accidental Gilmore Girls Reunion Happened Because Miracles Are Real

It's the height of summer, which means that everyone is going on vacation. The destinations may vary, but make no mistake, folks take their R&R very seriously in the summertime. So what happens when by total happenstance you book a vacation and end up relaxing in literally the same hotel as one of your close friends? You vacation together, silly; it's certainly one way to take those R&R vibes up a notch or two.

More: Soon You’ll Be Able to Drink Gilmore Girls' Luke's Coffee All the Time

That's what happened when Gilmore Girls co-stars Melissa McCarthy and Yanic Truesdale — Sookie and Michel respectively — took a vacation to Greece recently. Truesdale posted a photo to his Instagram on Monday of himself and McCarthy in a pool together. Seeing them together isn't at all surprising, but his caption alluded to the fact that the reason for their hangout was a total surprise. "I love when this happens!" he wrote. "By coincidence, we both booked @melissamccarthy a vacation at the same time in Greece! #magicaltiming #bestvacations."

Of all the places to reunite, this definitely looks like the place to do it. While McCarthy and Truesdale have been on separate career paths since Gilmore Girls wrapped (they didn't even share a scene in the Netflix revival, for pity's sake), it's absolutely the sweetest thing to see fate bring them together in such a way. The universe seems intent on making these co-stars reunite one way or another. But also, guys, stop melting my heart, please. It's too much!

The fun Gilmore Girls vibes didn't stop there for Truesdale's Grecian vacay. He posted another photo just hours before his picture with McCarthy that showed him relaxing on the beach while reading Lauren Graham's book Talking As Fast As I Can. He made sure to give her some love in the photo caption and made it clear that even when they're apart, the love for his other Gilmore Girls co-star is strong. He wrote: "Catching up on my reading in Greece. At last a vacation! Proud of my friend Lauren for her funny and entertaining new book!"

Can Kissing a Newborn Baby Really Be Deadly? Doctors Weigh In

0
0

Yesterday, we learned of the heartbreaking death of Mariana Reese Sifrit, who died 18 days following her birth after contracting viral meningitis when she was less than a week old. The meningitis was caused by HSV-1 — the same herpes virus that causes cold sores — and is believed to have been transferred by a kiss.

But how likely is this to happen? We spoke with several physicians to find out what new parents need to know.

Do parents really need to worry about someone making their baby very sick by kissing it?

In short: Yes, it can happen, but it’s very rare.

“People can definitely make a baby sick by kissing them,” says Dr. Gina Posner, a pediatrician at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California. “Saliva carries a lot of germs. If they aren’t sick, then the baby won’t get sick, but if they have a cold or other virus or bacteria, it can easily be spread by kissing.”

Newborns have immature immune systems, making them more vulnerable to severe illnesses from viruses and bacteria that cause only mild illness in older children and adults, Dr. Emily Edwards, a pediatrician at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, tells SheKnows. For example, the herpes virus that can cause cold sores in adults can cause neonatal meningitis in a newborn, she adds.

How did this happen?

Herpes meningitis can be caused by bacteria, fungi or other types of germs, and it can be spread through sexual contact or from a woman to her baby during childbirth, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine's Dr. Trung Tristan Truong, a pediatrician at MemorialCare Medical Group in San Juan Capistrano, California, says. Truong clarifies, though, that herpes is a virus, so herpes meningitis (inflammation of the meninges) or herpes encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or both (meningoencephalitis) cannot be caused by bacteria or fungi.

According to Dr. Charles Shubin, a pediatrician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, newborn babies up to 2 months of age are immune-incompetent, similar to chemo or HIV patients.

How common is this?

Luckily, meningitis caused by bacteria or herpes is rare, occurring in less than 1 out of 1,000 live births. In addition, Edwards says that she has seen rates of infant meningitis decrease over the past several years because of developments of vaccines. However, these cases can be devastating when they do occur, she notes, causing permanent neurologic dysfunction or death.

More: What You Need to Know About Postpartum OCD

Dr. Amesh A. Adalja, senior associate at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security notes that this is a “pretty rare occurrence and not the normal course of events.”

Similarly, Posner says that although she has personally not had any cases of meningitis being transferred by a kiss to a newborn, it is possible — even though it’s not as infectious as something like measles.

What should parents allow/not allow in terms of people having contact with newborn babies?

In short, people with any sort of infectious — or potentially infectious — condition should not be kissing babies.

Someone who has an active respiratory condition (common cold, undiagnosed chronic cough condition, suspected influenza), an obvious infection (like chickenpox) or an active intestinal illness (diarrhea/vomiting) probably should best keep away from contact with newborn babies, Truong says, adding that someone with a cold sore should not be kissing babies.

While those with lesions caused by oral herpes should definitely avoid kissing others, they should bear in mind that transmission can occur, even without a sore, Adalja says.

In addition, Edwards recommends that parents should also encourage their household contacts and close family members and friends to make sure their influenza and Tdap vaccinations are up to date.

And no matter what, the doctors recommend that any visitors coming in contact with newborn babies should wash their hands with either soap and water or hand sanitizer.

“I tell all the parents of newborns that people can come visit if they are 100 percent healthy,” Posner says. “If they tell them they just have a little sore throat or the end of a cold, I have a parent say to visit when they feel 100 percent better.”

MoreWhat to Know About Postpartum Depression and Anxiety

Sure, it’s one thing to tell adults with an infection away from a newborn, but what about other children?

Posner says that she tries to give people – kids especially – alternative places to kiss newborn babies, so they avoid the face. These include on the bottom of their feet or the back of their head.

Mindy Kaling's Baby Daddy Mystery Shows No Sign of Dying Down on Twitter

A day and a half after the story broke that The Office actress, author of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and all-around awesome and funny human Mindy Kaling is pregnant, the news continues to engulf the internet in "OMG, who's the daddy?" flames.

MK preg 3

"Multiple sources" have told E News that the star's pregnancy was a completely "unexpected surprise," which just adds to the swirling tornado of questions. Seriously, we can't get away from this story, people!

That's pretty impressive considering Kaling herself has yet to confirm the story.

More: Mindy Kaling is reportedly pregnant

The same sources have reported that Kaling doesn't plan to shift the production schedules of any of her projects, either. (Someone should probably explain newborns to Kaling. Girl, you might want to keep things a little flex. Call us for deets.)

Kaling has never dropped any clues about who she might want to procreate with or when. Kelly Kapoor, however — Kaling's character on The Office — never beat around the bush about wanting to have a gazillion little babies with B.J. Novak's Office character, Ryan.

“I’m going to not actively plan, but if it happens, it would happen,” Kaling said in one interview. “I’m not cavalier about who I would have a kid with. But the thing I ask every parent that I really admire, the one comment they all have is that they wish they had kids earlier.”

Mission accomplished, or so it seems. This would be Kaling's first child. We have all the feels!

The identity of the father is a total mystery — or is it? Humanity is determined to solve this case judging by the feeding frenzy happening on Twitter.

In 24 hours, Twitter has divided into clear camps. B.J. Novak, Kaling's frequent on-screen love and off-screen collaborator, is Twitter's vote for papa duty. He's winning a current Twitter poll by a landslide.

Beyoncé's Newest Wax Figure Looks Nothing Like Beyoncé

Something horrible has been created by the hands of man, and I don't think it can be undone. It's not too serious as far as bad things go, but it's pretty bad if you're a fan of Beyoncé. On Tuesday, Beyoncé's Madame Tussauds wax figure was unveiled, and one particularly unflattering photo of the "Formation" singer wax form indicates this thing may be more monstrosity than marvel. Naturally, the Beyhive was confused, horrified and disgusted.

More: There Might Be Hidden Meaning in Beyoncé's Photo of Sir & Rumi Carter

It's not an ugly wax figure, per se, it's just that this thing looks nothing like Beyoncé. This skin of the figure is much lighter than Beyoncé's in real life — problematic and inaccurate? Fun — and there's something about the face that feels... off. Maybe it's the eyes? The cheekbones? The lips? The pose of the figure is probably the closest thing to resembling Beyoncé, but man, it really doesn't help to redeem the figure at all.

Naturally, people on Twitter had some very real thoughts and feelings about this figure. One person accurately nailed with a GIF the total state of confusion one might be thrown into upon first looking at this incredibly odd image of wax figure Beyoncé.

Others gave the impression of being more than a little pissed that a wax figure whose skin was clearly much lighter than Beyoncé's and who very obviously didn't resemble her was allowed to exist.

This incident is perhaps all the more galling because the wax figure is one of Madame Tussauds', as previously mentioned. Madame Tussauds is quite literally world-renowned for its wax figures of famous celebrities; for them to mess this up with a celeb as beloved as Beyoncé is really just a whole bunch of nonsense.

To add insult to injury, another celebrity wax figure was unveiled this week: Kylie Jenner. It would appear that this is the one time Jenner has managed to upstage Beyoncé, because Jenner's figure looks exactly — exactly — like her. The hair, the outfit and even that cheeky smirk all scream Jenner. I mean, side by side, you can hardly tell the difference. It's nuts.

This whole, entire weird and totally unfair incident definitely should result in a new wax figure being made for Beyoncé, ASAP.

Mom Confesses to Making Breast Milk Brownies for School Bake Sale

0

Breast milk is great for babies, but hey, that doesn't mean we're hankering to replace the creamer in our morning coffee with the stuff.

One anonymous mom said she whipped up some brownies for a school bake sale — and one of the ingredients was her breast milk.

More: I can't believe I had to pump there

Just no. Hard pass. Ewwwwww.

Her online confession is, not surprisingly, garnering quite a bit of attention. Sanctimommy shared it on its Facebook page:

breastmilk brownies

breastmilk brownies

Honestly, what was she thinking? Breast milk is fab for babies, but it's still a damn bodily fluid — and most people are a wee bit squeamish about the bodily fluids of strangers.

More: Moms react to the new breastfeeding emoji

As one commenter put it (no punches pulled), "It's a fucking body fluid!!! I breastfeed I am totally breastfeeding but if you feed me or my kid your body fluid I am going to blow a gasket too."

The CDC does say that the chance of transmitting a disease via breast milk is low, but it's not impossible. Breast milk can in fact contain STIs as well as small amounts of alcohol and drugs ingested by the breastfeeding mother.

The mom's excuse that she didn't have time to dash to the store for some regular old milk didn't sit well with, well, pretty much anyone.

One commenter slayed us with her assessment of the situation. "I totally understand! Over the weekend my kid [sic] were having a lemonade stand, the faucet was too far away so I used vodka instead of water. Now my neighbors are bugging out, like hello how about a thank you since your kids actually took a nap!!!"

Others expressed similarly horrifying and hilarious sentiments. "It's like that one time I made lemonade with my urine because I ran out of water and didn't feel like going to the store to get more. I only drink Perrier so they were getting, like, the best urine ever. I don't know why everyone was so mad about it."

Another said, "Oh my gosh, YES, the only way I can get my kids to drink breast milk is by slipping it into baked goods, breakfast cereal, etc. They're in their 20s, so they're not as receptive to latching on anymore, but I'll be damned if I'm going to deprive them of Mommy's precious nutrients."

But the mom — still anonymous, which is probably lucky for her — defended her substitution.

"I didn't think it was a big deal," she wrote. "Some of those kids could use the nutrition, let's be honest."

OH, NO SHE DIDN'T.

Yes. Yes, she did. She squirted her boob fluid into brownies for public consumption, then proceeded to judge other school parents for the care and feeding of their children.

More: When it comes to breast milk, baby boys get the better deal

We're pretty sure this mom isn't going to get invited to book club or bunco parties anymore.

Some folks are convinced this is all an elaborate ruse, as most brownie recipes don't call for milk of any kind. What gives? The anonymous posting means we may never know. But one thing is for sure. Breast is not always best, folks. In fact, in this case, if this really went down? It's the ultimate worst. *Shudder*

Selena Gomez & The Weeknd's Summer Dates So Far

When you’re in love, summer is the sweetest time to enjoy special moments with your beloved. Even with their busy schedules, Selena Gomez and The Weeknd are doing just that by spending as much time together as possible.

At the beginning of the season, they were spotted out and about quite a bit. But lately, most of the Gomez and Weeknd sightings have been reserved for social media moments.

Here are the couple’s summer dates so far.

New York City

In early June, Gomez and The Weeknd headed to the Big Apple for work obligations, but they still had fun. He was in town for a few performances while Gomez promoted her new single “Bad Liar.”

While in town, she had a photo shoot with photographer Alfred “Alfy” Muteti, who photographed her on a rooftop deck at sunset. Gomez rocked a sexy white satin dress adorned with black lace. She teased her boyfriend by tagging him in one of the series of photos she posted, and she taunted fans with the caption “date night.”

The following night, the duo were seen hitting one of NYC’s hottest restaurants, Carbone, for some food after The Weeknd’s concert. While the place is well-known for its food, no one seemed to be paying attention. All eyes were on Gomez and her sheer black dress.

A source told E! News that "what she was wearing turned heads when she walked in and out."

The Weeknd posted a seductive photo of Gomez in that sultry dress with the caption “Glow.”

The couple's tour through New York City continued, and Gomez decided that the best way to celebrate was with cheesecake. In images from her Instagram story, captured by Refinery29, she enjoyed the delicious dessert on her way to the concert while rocking the most awesome black latex dress.

When the two departed the concert venue, Gomez shared a moment of PDA as she sat in The Weeknd’s lap. So sweet!

Los Angeles

Before The Weeknd headed out on the European leg of his tour, the couple caught the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me at The Grove outdoor mall in Los Angeles. E! News reported that the couple kept it low-key and dressed in similar sweatsuits.

A source told the entertainment outlet, “They are a super chill couple and enjoy [movie nights] the best.”

Since then, The Weeknd’s Starboy World Tour has been in Europe and Gomez has been promoting her latest song, "Fetish," so the couple have kept their cuteness to social media.

Gomez’s fans have been going nuts over the fact that The Weeknd has been going back in time and liking photos of his girlfriend from 2015. He clearly misses his girl while he’s all the way across the pond.

Insider Says Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Might Elope

0
0

Any news about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is worthy of our attention, but this latest news is so exciting, the anticipation of confirmation its happening may just kill us all. An insider has revealed to Us Weekly that Prince Harry and Markle could get married privately or even elope. Even if we don't get to share in the excitement of a splashy public royal wedding — as we did with Prince William and Kate Middleton — this news is still pretty exciting because it means we'd have yet another delightful and official royal couple in our midst.

More: Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Are Little Love-Sick Puppies

Us Weekly's report makes their claim that Markle and the prince could elope or, at the very least, wed in a super private ceremony, based on the fact that Markle's first marriage to talent manager Trevor Engleson was a fairly private ceremony on a Jamaican beach as well as the full statement of this insider: "[T]hey could get married somewhere private and elope rather than have a showy wedding." I know we all want a big, showy wedding because honestly, who wouldn't want to see this royal wedding happen, but this is an okay compromise.

Meghan Markle Suits Excitement

As it stands, Markle and Prince Harry are reportedly very, very seriously involved and committed to one another. While all talk of marriage is purely based on inside sources and speculation (the couple has yet to release any official statement on the nature of their relationship), it's clear these two are inseparable right now. Furthermore, they seem to be having a lot of fun right now. Be it a private date night at the Museum of Natural History or accompanying one another for a friend's beach wedding, these two are living their best lives in one another's company.

More: The Queen Reportedly Grants Prince Harry Permission to Wed

If and when the time comes that Prince Harry and Markle do want to say, "I do," they have lots of options. They could theoretically have their wedding at Westminster Abbey, even though many reports of their possible marriage state they both have shown a preference for a private wedding. Westminster Abbey, a longtime favorite location for royal weddings and coronations, became an option when a previous rule against divorcés getting married at the venue was lifted in 2002. This would make it possible for Markle, a divorcée, to marry her prince.

So basically, the couple has a ton of options when it comes to marriage; they just have to decide when and where. Oh, and they also have to make a splashy announcement about their engagement (if and when it happens) because some patient but very eager inquiring minds — including the author of this article — want to be able to celebrate them properly!

Rachel Lindsay Basically Just Revealed The Bachelorette Winner

0
0

If like me, you have zero chill when it comes to this season of The Bachelorette, you've probably done a bit of online snooping to see if you can determine which lucky dude ultimately puts a ring on Rachel Lindsay's finger. While there are theories aplenty on the interwebz, Rachel may have just spilled the beans.

By accident, of course.

Earlier this week, we all watched in a mixed state of heart-eye emojis and abject bewilderment as Rachel met the families of Eric, Bryan, Peter and Dean in their hometowns. Despite Dean fessing up to falling in love with our favorite girl and her returning the sentiment, it wasn't enough to save the super-perky young suitor from being sent packing.

More: Rachel Lindsay Is Chomping at the Bit to Get Hitched

That leaves Eric, Bryan and Peter vying for Rachel's heart. But where do things stand? Well, Eric kinda-sorta told Rachel he loved her, then kinda-sorta took it back. Peter was just as adorable as ever, but he didn't tell Rachel he loved her, and his family practically confirmed he wasn't ready for an engagement. Bryan basically won the week by taking her dancing and telling her he loves her.

And judging by a recent interview with People, Bryan wins a lot more than that.

At the Sports Illustrated Fashionable 50 event at Avenue in Hollywood, California, Rachel couldn't help gushing about her future husband, saying, "I love my fiancé. I just saw him yesterday. We just finished having our little rendezvous. We called it Happy Couples Weekend."

Ooo, sounds pretty steamy! Things aren't all sexy-time, though, 'cause Rachel revealed the pair have certainly had to work through some Bachelorette growing pains along the way.

"I try to anticipate every single situation, but there are some things you just can’t prepare yourself for," she said. "He watches every [episode], and then we talk about it, and we move on. But that's us."

More: The Best Reactions to Peter's Doubt on The Bachelorette

That makes sense, right? But let's get to the good stuff — you know, the part where she all but confirmed who wins her heart and this season of The Bachelorette.

When discussing potential wedding plans (they're shooting for next year), Rachel explained, "He's more of a hopeless romantic than I am! So he wants to wait a year too, but probably sooner. I think he's just following my lead."

Whoa, whoa, whoa. If you've been watching Rachel's journey, it doesn't take much effort to read between the lines of that comment. Sure, she probably didn't realize she was giving the world a major scoop, but nonetheless, her subtext says it all.

Let's dissect.

We'll go ahead and rule out Eric because does anyone actually think he's going to win? He's a sweet guy and all, but I don't see him being ready to walk down the aisle when all is said and done. Besides, he simply doesn't have the same chemistry with Rachel that Peter and Bryan seem to.

More: A New BIP Photo May Ruin The Bachelorette Season 13 for Everyone

Which brings us to Peter. While everyone and their mother-brother-sister-friend-cousin loves the man, he himself has said on multiple occasions that he is guarded. The way he asked his friends during hometown week how he could possibly know Rachel is the one after such a short time proves how practical he is.

In other words, he is not a hopeless romantic.

Bryan on the other hand has openly referenced his romanticism. It's one of the things Rachel had trouble wrapping her head around at first because she is such a realist and Bryan is so gosh damn sweet and affectionate all the time.

Basically, they'll balance each other out perfectly. They're a match made in Bachelor Nation heaven. So we're betting Bryan gets down on one knee during the finale — and Rachel says yes. After all, she pretty much just told us so.

Bonus? We don't have to be sad for Peter, because this scenario sets him up perfectly to be the next suitor up for grabs. Praise be the Bachelor gods!

The AHS Season 7 Teaser Trailer Is Here, & Yes, It Will Terrify You

Even though you can get a daily dose of horror just by keeping up with the news, American Horror Story is coming back, and it looks just as terrifying.

More: Is Sarah Paulson Playing Hillary Clinton in American Horror Story Season 7?

In a new leaked mini teaser, as well as theories from fans all across the web, the theme for the horror series’ seventh season builds on the previously confirmed theme around the 2016 election. The 15-second trailer shows a sea of white balloons, one after the other disappearing below, and eventually revealing a lone red balloon. The balloon pops, and in a flash a horrific man appears. He has a sack for a head, which is painted with a faint American flag and clown makeup, and he wears a black tuxedo with a bow tie.

Umm… No thanks.

There has been talk that the teaser could be a fake, but AHS aficionados and Ryan Murphy, creator and director of the show, have long been posting clues about the upcoming season and what the title and theme could be. For those die-hard fans who have been keeping up, Murphy has posted a few shots on his Instagram that indicate the election theme could play out: lots of clown masks painted with red, white and blue, a sketch for an Elephant Man mask and this weird-ass picture of a person covered in bees (also posted on the AHS News Feed on Twitter).

I’m not sure how it fits in with the political theme, but maybe some metaphorical reasoning will be revealed when the official season title comes out July 20.

Jennifer Lopez's Use of Gender-Neutral Pronouns on Instagram Is Important

Jennifer Lopez could just be a getting a Best Aunt Ever ribbon! The actor and singer recently posted a photo of her sister’s child, Brendan, using the gender-neutral pronoun “they” in her caption.

The photo comes from Brendan’s incredible success after attending the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., where they were chosen as the only person from their school to attend. Killing it, Brendan!

The other important note, of course, is Lopez's use of the gender-neutral pronoun for Brendan. For a young nonbinary person, hearing others use their preferred personal pronoun can be life-changing, especially when it's being posted on a global stage such as Lopez’s Instagram account. While there’s no official term for niece or nephew for nonbinary people, the proud aunt’s use of the proper pronoun speaks volumes for the LGBTQ community. She normalizes the often misunderstood notion of nonbinary-identifying people by respecting Brendan’s identity and using it in a simple Instagram caption.

“This is Brendan my sister Leslie’s second child!!” JLo writes. “They were the one person selected to represent their school at #globalyoungleadersconference in Washington DC!!! And I couldn’t be more proud!!! Brendan is strong and smart and loving and obviously a leader!! Titi Jenn loves you!! #superproudauntie #familia”

Brendan’s success is definitely the most important part of all this, but commenters were quick to also acknowledge Lopez’s use of “they.” One commenter wrote, “Woooooo!!! @jlo good job using the gender pronouns they prefer, and not making a whole big thing about it. This is what we need more of! Love you even more now!”

And another commenter wrote, “[I] love that preferred gender pronoun. stay woke sis.”

There will always, unfortunately, be people who don’t understand, like those commenters who tried to correct the pop star’s grammar. But as of 2017, “they” is globally recognized as a singular noun that is complete and proper grammar. So while this is a helpful leap forward for nonbinary identities around the world, congratulations for Brendan are more so in order for their incredible accomplishments in D.C.!

Kevin Hart Responds to Those Cheating Rumors With a Meme

Comedian Kevin Hart responded to rumors of his infidelity the only way he knows how: with a meme of himself.

The 38-year-old stand-up sensation was caught on camera with a mystery brunette during his time in Miami while his pregnant wife, Eniko Parrish, was home in Los Angeles. The video shows Hart and the unnamed woman getting super-close in the front seat of a car at 5 in the morning. The two were apparently engaging in heavy PDA, according to Hollywood Life. Sounds shady, especially with a witness’ recount of the possible affair. “It’s obvious they were up to no good,” the source told Radar Online. “She kept looking over her shoulder and Kevin was pop-eyed when another guest walked by. His friends are in total shock. It’s disgusting that Kevin did this to [Eniko].”

While video evidence seems undeniable, Hart has found a way to turn these allegations into something to laugh about. The meme he posted on his Instagram reads, “At the end of the day, you just gotta laugh at the BS.” The caption reads, “Live laugh love. SMDH.”

More: Dad Harasses Celebrity Golfers Until Justin Timberlake Holds His Baby

It seems like this is all we'll be getting out of Hart about this situation. It would stand to reason that if there were more to the story, he'd be candid about it, as he has been in the past. For example, he said in his comedy special Let Me Explain, “Yes, yes people, I cheated. Am I ashamed of it? No, no I’m not. Do I wish that I could take it back? No, no I don’t. Let me tell you why: You can’t evolve as a man if you never make a mistake.”

Hart is capable of taking himself seriously. But from my perspective, his lack of realness about the video and the allegations is suspicious in and of itself. We’ll see how this turns out, but in the meantime, Hart seems confident in his faithfulness and his marriage.

Secondary Infertility: 6 Facts You Need to Know

0
0

More and more lately, women are coming forward to talk about their heartbreaking struggle with infertility. Celebs like Chrissy Teigen and Giuliana Rancic have been very upfront with their battles to conceive, and have opened up an important conversation that has helped alleviate the stigma surrounding infertility.

But less has been said about secondary infertility — when a couple has trouble conceiving after getting pregnant in the past without any problems. That's why we appreciated when actress Molly Sims talked about her problems with secondary infertility. In a 2016 YouTube video, she talked about how she faced some "dark moments" and how much she dreaded calls from her fertility specialist because for so long the news on the other end wasn't good.

Happily, Sims was able to get pregnant again, and is now raising three kids. But secondary infertility remains, for many women, a gut-wrenching problem that's actually more common than you might imagine. SheKnows reached out to Dr. Erika Munch, a fertility specialist at Texas Fertility Center, and Dr. Rinku Mehta of the Frisco Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Texas to find out everything you need to know about trying for baby No. 2 (or 3!) and when to seek treatment if things aren't happening on their own.

More: The Breakthrough Option for Treating Unexplained Infertility

1. Secondary infertility is not uncommon

"Secondary infertility is at least as common as primary infertility," say Munch. It affects approximately 1 in every 8 couples who are trying to have a baby.

2. Whether or not you have secondary infertility depends on your age and how long you've been trying to conceive

Technically, secondary infertility is when a couple who has become pregnant and given birth in the past without difficulty is unable to conceive and deliver thereafter. But how long before secondary infertility is considered depends on your age. If you're under 35, this means you've tried getting pregnant for 12 months without success. If you're 35 or older, it's 6 months.

And when it comes to infertility, history may repeat itself. "If you had trouble conceiving your first child or needed infertility treatment to achieve a pregnancy in the past, it’s possible that you’ll need treatment again," says Munch.

3. When you should see a doctor depends on your age and medical history

If you have a known fertility issue, then doctors recommend heading in as soon as you're ready to start trying for another pregnancy. If you're under 35, it's recommended that you consult with your doctor after a full year of unprotected sex with no pregnancy. If you're over 35, you only have to try for six months before making the call for an appointment.

4. There are things you and your partner can do to try to prevent secondary infertility issues

Biological issues like irregular ovulation or problems with sperm function or development may always have an impact on your fertility. But if you and your partner have no known problems that could prevent you from conceiving, Mehta suggests looking at your lifestyle. "Maintaining a normal body weight, regular exercise and healthy well balanced diet are all recommended for couples trying to conceive. And poor lifestyle factors such as obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol or drug use can contribute to infertility."

She also points out that when it comes to avoiding secondary infertility, the clock is ticking. "Age of the woman is the single most predictive factor regarding fertility. I would advise women to not wait too long between trying to have children if they were already over age 35 when they conceived the first time."

MoreKnowing When to Draw the Line on Fertility Treatment

5. There are lots of treatment options for secondary infertility

If you find yourself unable to get pregnant on your own, don't panic. Just like when a couple has trouble getting pregnant the first time around, there are a ton of treatment options. In fact, the ways primary and secondary infertility are treated are very similar, and your doctor can help tailor a plan that's best for your exact issues. Options include medications to help regulate ovulation, inseminations to help in situations in which poor or low sperm quality is the issue and even in vitro fertilization. Don't worry if it sounds overwhelming. "The vast majority of couples with secondary infertility are successful in achieving another pregnancy; it’s just a matter of how much extra help is needed to get them there," says Munch

6. Treating secondary infertility isn't just physical

Having trouble getting pregnant can be extremely stressful for a couple, especially if conception is something that happened easily for you in the past. It's important to be kind to yourself while coping with secondary infertility, and whether it's talking to a close friend or doing yoga, trying to find healthy ways to relieve your stress. Mehta recommends that couples coping with secondary infertility have honest discussions about their family goals as well. "I always recommend that couples keep open communication between them and be on the same page as far their desires to pursue fertility goes."

7 Things You Never Knew About Going to Therapy

0
0

If I'm being real, I have to admit that I was totally hesitant to start seeing a therapist. Sure, I'd been wanting a pro opinion on my intense anxiety issues for a while — but still, I was beyond scared to open up about my inner workings to a virtual stranger.

Speaking of virtual, that was exactly what I did. When my oldest son was two years old and my second son was just an infant, I realized: I'm not doing a very good job at life. I thought that having a role as a mother would help calm the anxiety that constantly built up in my chest. As I realized that the responsibilities of parenting made me even more anxious, I knew it was time to bite the bullet. I signed up for virtual therapy, and my life has never been the same.

It wasn't an instant miracle. It wasn't a quick fix. But building a trustworthy relationship with a mental health professional has given me the guidance I need to overcome a number of emotional hurdles in my life. I'm still dealing with the aftermath of a painful childhood, and I still struggle with anxiety. But now, I finally have the tools I need to release stress and better enjoy the moment.

More: Why Virtual Therapy May Be the Right Choice for You

The word "therapy" is a turnoff for most of us. I'm here to encourage you to consider therapy for any problems that are plaguing you, large or small, with an open mind. Here's what your therapist really wants you to know:

1. Therapy is normal

That's it right there. I avoided reaching out for professional help, and even talking about going to therapy for quite some time, because I thought it would make me look "crazy." Erin Tishman, manager of clinical services for Family Centers, Inc., elaborates, "There is a stigma attached to therapy for a number of reasons. People think only 'crazy' people need therapy or that they might be viewed as 'weak' for seeing a therapist and not managing their stressors on their own."

2. Therapy is objective

Tishman continues, "Some believe that talking to family and friends is just as effective as seeing a therapist because 'they know me,' and some believe no therapist 'could possibly understand because they haven’t been through what I've been through.'" I was tempted with the same line of thinking before seeing a therapist. For years, I figured that my husband and sister could give me the pep talks I needed to get through my worst days. But, the real value in therapy, I learned, is objectivity: I trust what my therapist says implicitly because she doesn't know me and looks at my life with a fresh eye.

3. Therapy boosts confidence

One reason I was so reluctant to start therapy was because I didn't want to open the door and see all the skeletons in the closet. What if I could never put them back in? Michele Rosenthal, author of Your Life After Trauma: Powerful Practices to Reclaim Your Identity, shares of seeking therapy for PTSD, "For seventeen years after my trauma, I refused mental health help because I was terrified that talking about what had happened to me would cause me to have a mental/emotional meltdown from which I would never recover. When things finally got so bad, I did start therapy. I was surprised to discover, through the years' long process, that my 'I can't handle it!' fear was a valid, but erroneous concern."

4. Therapy isn't like school

Pre-therapy, I rolled my eyes at the thought of doing emotional "homework" and breathing exercises. In reality, my therapist is laid-back and accepting. She has recommended books, but has never slapped me with a required reading list. Christine Laplante, L.M.H.C., mental health counselor and therapy recipient, agrees, "To my surprise, my therapist did not prescribe me homework assignments like journaling or thinking about what I wanted or making pro-and-con lists. He didn't tell me what to do or who I was." Dr. Sarah Allen, Chicago-based psychologist and therapist, adds, "Therapy is all about the relationship. It doesn't matter what techniques the therapist is trained in (as long as they are qualified and licensed), therapy works if you feel heard, supported and connected to your therapist. If you do not feel these things, it is time to find a different therapist."

5. Therapists have heard everything

Just like doctors, waxers and birthing coaches, therapists have seen it all. As I dipped my toes into the waters of confession and began to bare my secrets, my shoulders visibly relaxed when my therapist didn't bat an eye. "Therapists have heard a lot of personal stories, and it's highly unlikely yours is the most unique. Even if it is, therapists do not judge you for your thoughts," says Dr. Samantha Rodman, licensed psychologist, dating coach and SheKnows expert.

6. Therapy can be short

Another hindrance to therapy, for me and for most people, is the almighty dollar. I was gun-shy about calling a therapist because I didn't want to commit years of my life and thousands of dollars to a process that may or may not work. Pauline Wallin, Ph.D., therapist for 40 years, calls this a common therapy "misconception." According to Wallin, therapy does not have to last for years. In fact, Wallin says, "The average number of sessions is six to 10." Valerie Jencks, L.M.F.T., L.C.P.C., founder and executive director of Prairie Family Therapy in Chicago, adds, "There are many low-cost options offered through graduate school clinics, church- and synagogue-based counseling and private practice therapists who are willing to slide their fee."

7. Therapy doesn't have to be in person

As a work-at-home mom of two, I knew I didn't have time to squeeze extracurricular therapy into my schedule even once a month. I did some hard Google searches and reviewed therapists with online services on Psychology Today. I eventually found a counseling office nearby that offered virtual therapy via webcam at a reduced price with a pre-licensed therapist. I feel incredibly fortunate that we were a good match. My experience so far has been life changing.

Just Because Someone Has Boy-Girl Twins Doesn't Mean They're 'Done'

0

Take note, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and George and Amal Clooney: There are certain things that are universal to the twin parent experience — and one of them is hearing the same chorus of catchphrases everywhere you go. A few at the top of the laundry list:

  • “You’ve got your hands full!”
  • “Two for the price of one!”
  • “Do twins run in your family?”
  • “You’ve got your work cut out for you!”
  • “Are they identical?”

Almost all of the commenters are well-intentioned, and sometimes it can even liven up your day to engage in conversation about your most precious cargo. But there’s one particular phrase that I hear almost daily that’s got a not-so-fun connotation: “A boy and a girl… you’re done!” (Seriously, it can’t be overstated how much people say this to parents of opposite-sex twins.)

More: Knowing When to Draw the Line on Fertility Treatments

I’ve always found it somewhat baffling that people assume I must be “done” having children simply because I have one boy and one girl. The assumption seems to be that having a child of each gender is the holy grail and that one couldn’t possibly want more kids if they manage to hit the reproductive jackpot in this way. What they don’t know is that I am done having kids, but not for the reasons they think. I would actually love to expand my family, but my history with infertility makes that virtually impossible.

While the comment can be hurtful, it’s rooted in an emergent reality. According to the Pew Research Center, almost half of Americans see two children as the ideal family size, and 63 percent of American mothers now have only one or two children by the end of their childbearing years (a sharp decrease from the mid-1970s). So it’s easy to see why someone might view a two-child family as “complete” — but why the hyper-focus on gender?

“The concept of balance plays a big part when it comes to the perspective of a 'complete' family,” says clinical psychologist Stephanie O’Leary. “From the outside looking in, having a boy and a girl allows parents to experience raising a son and a daughter, thus not missing out on either relationship. There are also cultural factors to consider, with some families valuing one gender over another based on traditional stereotypes.”

MoreMy Male Partner Won't Agree to a Sperm Analysis — Now What?

Reproductive endocrinologist Jane Frederick sees a lot of patients with this mindset at Newport Beach-based clinic HRC Fertility. The clinic is widely considered a trailblazer in the concept of “family balancing,” or the practice of gender selection when choosing embryos for transfer. (Though clients are actually choosing the baby’s sex—since it’s unclear how he or she will identify—the commonly used term in fertility circles is “gender selection.”) Frederick estimates that up to 25 percent of her clients seek IVF treatment strictly with the goal of balancing their broods (rather than for its primary purpose of treating infertility). Thanks to the use of increasingly sophisticated preimplantation genetic screening technology, Frederick and her colleagues can guarantee a baby’s sex within 99 percent accuracy.

“Gender balancing has gotten more popular in recent years, and with the rise of PGS screening tools, we’re seeing more and more options,” says Frederick. “I am there to use the technology to get them to completion of their family by making their next pregnancy the gender of their choice. I see it as a win for the community that doesn’t want to have eight pregnancies on board [to get their desired gender], which is a big economic burden. Some couples utilize abortion as a means of balancing their family, and we’re trying to prevent that.”

While it might seem extreme — or even indulgent — to spend thousands of dollars and put one’s body through the rigors of IVF simply to ensure a baby’s sex, many people have what they view as meaningful reasons. “I often encounter women who strive for a family makeup similar to their own family of origin,” says O’Leary. “I’m also observing societal trends that lead parents to desire ‘one of each’ in order to attain what appears to be balance within the family unit. In some ways, there appears to be a fear of missing out if families have children of one gender.”

With all this in mind, it’s easier to understand why an outsider might assume a mother with one boy and one girl would be “done,” but that still doesn’t make it OK to say it out loud. For those who’ve been through infertility, it’s an unwanted reminder that they are indeed “done” — but due to reasons beyond their control. Adds O’Leary, “It can be triggering and painful for a parent to hear comments that are flippant and that touch on very personal issues of fertility and family planning. It's also hard to tolerate commentary regarding family size when you might not have options others assume you do based on fertility challenges.”

Oklahoma-based mom Kayla Pennington can relate. After struggling with polycystic ovarian syndrome for five years, she now has 3-year-old boy/girl twins and according to her, gets the “You’re done!” decree all the time, which is “more painful than all of the negative [pregnancy] tests.” Despite their experiences with infertility, Pennington says she and her husband do want to try to have more children and that she wishes “people wouldn’t assume that the American dream is one child of each sex — because, most times, it’s not the case at all.”

The 7 Best SPF-Filled Tinted Moisturizers We’re Obsessed With This Summer

0

It’s safe to say that we all want to master the no-makeup makeup look, especially during the summer. You know, the one that leaves your skin looking slightly dewy and slightly matte, yet natural-looking enough that your freckles still shine through? Annoyingly, though, by the time you slather on your moisturizer, sunscreen, tinted moisturizer and setting powder, you quickly lose the natural finish you were aiming for. That's why we’re so obsessed with SPF-filled tinted moisturizers, the unsung summer heroes that make hot-weather makeup a helluva lot easier to manage.

More: 10 Weirdly Awesome Tricks to Get Dewy Skin

We understand that there are tons of tinted moisturizers on the market that claim to be the absolute best at covering blemishes, hydrating skin, evening out your skin tone and protecting your face from the sun’s evil rays, but surprise! It’s not true. In fact, most SPF-filled formulas out there actually lack the correct amount of UVA and UVB protection required to shield your skin from sun damage and cancer. Yup, the bare SPF minimum your moisturizer or makeup needs is SPF 30 according to the American Academy of Dermatology, which means all those SPF 15 and 20 products just won’t cut it if you want to stave off wrinkles, dark marks and, you know, cancer.
