Seth MacFarlane sings his way into Oscar host history

No one knew what to expect with Seth MacFarlane as the Oscar host, but he ended up giving the show just the energy it needed.

Seth MacFarlane

Hiring a TV actor to host a show dedicated to film can always be tricky, especially when that TV actor is a cartoon character .

But Seth MacFarlane may have been the best choice for the 2013 Oscars because of his love of singing and comedy. He kept his comedy fairly clean, and his singing was full of class and jokes .

The show started with MacFarlane's opening monologue/musical pieces and included Captain Kirk. Or rather William Shatner as Captain Kirk. He said he was calling from the future and wanted MacFarlane to know he did a bad job hosting but could still turn it around. He then showed him videos of what the Oscars looked like without Shatner's help.

Complete list of 2013 Oscar winners>>

One of those videos was of a song Captain Kirk deemed too crude to perform on the show, called "We Saw Your Boobs." The song was basically a list of famous actresses who have showed their chests in movies.

MacFarlane also had help from some famous friends with his opening number. These included Channing Tatum and Charlize Theron, who danced to "The Way You Look Tonight," and Daniel Radcliffe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who sang and danced to "High Hopes."

His most offensive piece may have been when he dressed up as a flying nun and recorded a skit, supposedly in Sally Field's dressing room. The skit ended with the two making out .

Friendly advice for the host of the Academy Awards>>

After his opening number, MacFarlane mostly faded into the background, as many hosts are meant to do. He did announce the announcers, and he made many funny quips about those announcers. As the show went on, he seemed bored and started to apologize about the length of the show.

"And since we've been here so long, we're going to start the 2014 Oscars right after this," he said near the end of the show.

All in all, MacFarlane was the perfect balance of fun, appropriate humor and musical performance. If he had been more himself, the show might have been funnier, but he'd probably also never be invited back. His singing was a nice addition to his fun personality, and it moved the long show forward.

Despite what Captain Kirk said, MacFarlane definitely did a better than mediocre job in his first stint as Oscar host.

Whitney's best-dressed picks

Designer Whitney Port loved the fashion at the 2013 Academy Awards. We asked her to break down her picks for the best-dressed ladies at this year's ceremony. The big winners? The A-listers in form-fitting couture, of course!

Kerry Washington

Django Unchained actress Kerry Washington opted for an embellished Miu Miu creation at the 2013 Oscars. It was — hands down — one of the best looks of the night, according to Whitney.

"I thought the beading was fantastic on the top of her dress and the color was just so vibrant and playful," Port said of the gown. "It fit her beautifully, and I loved the simple little bow belt to accessorize."

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence walked away with two prizes tonight: the Best Actress Oscar — and the best-dressed award from Whitney.

"[Lawrence] loves the strapless look, and while it was simple on top, I loved how dramatic it got on the bottom," the designer told SheKnows of the Dior Haute Couture gown. "I am always a sucker for a princess dress, and I think it was very fitting for her. White is always a stunner as well."

Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts at the 2013 Oscars

One of Whitney's favorite looks at the 2013 Oscars was Naomi Watts' futuristic Armani gown.

"Absolutely loved the neckline and give her a lot of credit for taking a bit of a risk," Whitney said. "It was edgy and funky, and I loved the gun-metal sequins."

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron at the 2013 Oscars

Charlize Theron rocked the pixie cut — and a bit of side boob — on the 2013 Oscars red carpet in her Dior Haute Couture.

"Though her dress was a bit wrinkled, I love the edginess of this. I love the streamlined silhouette and the stark white color. She looked statuesque and just really cool and chic."

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana at the 2013 Oscars

Zoe Saldana took a little risk with her Alexis Mabille Couture gown — and it paid off.

"Love the floral applique on the top of her dress. It was very feminine and gentle but edgy at the same time. I also loved the ombre ruffles. It was a funky choice for the Oscars, and I love someone willing to take a chance."

Halle Berry

Halle Berry at the 2013 Oscars

Only Halle Berry could pull off this custom Versace number — and pull it off she did!

"Love the geometrical sequins and the silhouette," Port told us. "She looked glamorous and sexy, as she always does."

She sure does, Whitney!

The Oscars try something new with a musical theme

The awards show decided to go in a new direction this year, thanks to its producers. The theme of the night was music — and it carried through everything that happened.

Les Miserables

The Oscars decided to change things up this year, quite a bit. The show hired two new producers, Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, and as soon as the names were announced, people had a hint of what to expect at this year's awards ceremony.

Complete list of 2013 Oscar winners>>

Meron and Zadan's specialties are musicals, including the modern versions of Hairspray and Footloose and the TV musical Smash. When they hired Seth MacFarlane as host, the musical possibilities grew significantly. While MacFarlane is known for his show Family Guy, he regularly does musical bits and is quite the musician .

Meron and Zadan then announced a first: a theme for the show. They said they would be honoring music in film, and they lived up to that promise. The theme was evident in everything that happened. They first brought in Dame Shirley Bassey to sing "Goldfinger," a song she helped make famous.

The show also wanted to honor recent musicals that made it to the Oscars. Catherine Zeta-Jones performed "All That Jazz" from past Best Picture winner Chicago. The best thing about the performance was that it was similar to one in the movie, something she was never able to do when the film was up for its awards. In 2003, Zeta-Jones won the award for Best Actress for the film and sang the song for the ceremony. But she was eight months' pregnant at the time and wasn't able to perform as she had in the film. She more than made up for that on Oscar night this year.

The most "interesting" Oscar musical performances of all time>>

Jennifer Hudson followed up on that performance with her song from Dream Girls, a film she won an Oscar for in 2007. Adele then sang her Oscar-nominated song "Skyfall" from the film of the same name. On the red carpet, she seemed absolutely giddy to be there, saying, "I feel like Beyoncé."

Many of the stars ofLes Misérables also performed, providing what ended up being one of the most emotional moments of the night.

There were many musical surprises at the show as well. During the "In Memoriam" segment, movie conductor Marvin Hamlisch appeared on screen , and Barbra Streisand then appeared on stage.

The actress appeared emotional and said Hamlisch had passed too soon. She then sang "The Way We Were" from the 1973 film.

"During the course of the show, at some point, Barbra Streisand is going to come on and do something really special and blow people away," Zadan had told The Hollywood Reporter. "We told her we couldn't imagine celebrating music in the movies without her, and she said she'd love to."

Actresses upset over "We Saw Your Boobs"... or were they?>>

Streisand did indeed blow people away. And she hadn't performed at the ceremony since 1977.

Norah Jones appeared on stage to sing MacFarlane's nominated song, "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from Ted.

"Skyfall," sung by 24-year-old new mom Adele, ended up taking home the award.

The show ended the way it began, with a song. MacFarlane and Kristin Chenoweth sang a song for the losers.

Bradley Cooper

Silver Linings Playbook Best Actor nominee Bradley Cooper looked every bit the movie star at the 2013 Academy Awards — complete with his hot date, his mom! We especially loved his slicked-back hair, and Whitney agreed.

"Loved the slicked-back hair and beard. I love that mix of grunge and handsome," the designer told SheKnows. "Also thought he looked great in a three-piece suit."

We definitely agree, Whitney!

Django Unchained star Jamie Foxx also had a beautiful date on his arm at the 2013 Oscars — his 19-year-old daughter, Corinne Bishop.

Why was Kristen Stewart limping at the Oscars? >>

He also looked pretty sharp, according to Whitney.

"I loved the metallic bow tie and slate-gray suit," the designer said. "He took a chance, and I thought he looked unique."

Daniel Day-Lewis breaks record with third acting Oscar

$

The actor is considered one of the best in Hollywood, and when Steven Spielberg was looking for his Lincoln, there wasn't a question in his mind.

Daniel Day-Lewis Daniel Day-Lewis is a rare phenomenon in the acting world. He has gotten to the point in his career where he takes very few roles — and even fewer that are not award-winning roles or in award-winning films.

Complete list of 2013 Oscar winners>>

Day-Lewis has been nominated for five Oscars, for 1989's My Left Foot, 1993's In the Name of the Father, 2002's Gangs of New York and 2007's There Will Be Blood and this year for Lincoln. He has won three of those awards, a first in Hollywood.

"His win for Lincoln made him the first man to win three Best Actor Oscars in the 85-year history of the Academy Awards," said Reuters. "The British-born actor with dual Anglo-Irish citizenship won virtually every award in the run-up to Sunday's Oscar ceremony, including a Golden Globe, British BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild statuettes."

Sally Field "fought like holy hell" for Mary Todd Lincoln>>

Being able to choose your parts very carefully also offers Day-Lewis the luxury of preparing as much as he needs to, and that shows in his work.

"Accepting the award, Day-Lewis thanked the film's director, Steven Spielberg, and then paid tribute to the 'mysteriously beautiful mind, body and spirit of Abraham Lincoln,'" said Reuters. "It took director Steven Spielberg three attempts to persuade Day-Lewis to take on the role of Lincoln."

Once he decided to accept the role, he threw himself into the character. His preparation included some interesting communication tactics.

"Day-Lewis spent months researching Lincoln's political and personal life, and 19th century language and customs. Months before shooting began, he was texting his screen wife, actress Sally Field, in 19th century vernacular," said Reuters.

He also made a bold choice in guessing which way the president might have spoken.

Then and now: Oscar nominees' fashion evolution>>

"Day-Lewis chose to adopt a high-pitched speaking voice for Lincoln, in contrast to the dramatic, booming tones associated with the Civil War president in previous movies and TV portraits," according to Reuters.

Many actors in Hollywood, including those who were also nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars, agree that Day-Lewis gave the best male performance of the year.

Michelle Obama makes surprise Oscar appearance

The Best Picture award is a big moment, but it became even bigger when the first lady of the United States surprised everyone by announcing the award.

Michelle Obama

It was a good night for Ben Affleck. Not only did his film Argo win the Best Picture Oscar, it was the first to do so without a Best Director nomination since Driving Miss Daisy in 1990.

Complete list of 2013 Oscar winners>>

An added plus for the film was that first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance during the Best Picture presentation. Legendary actor Jack Nicholson presented the award along with Obama, who appeared via satellite.

“[These films] taught us that love can beat all odds," Obama said, according to the Huffington Post. "They reminded us that we can overcome any obstacle if we dig deep enough and fight hard enough and find the courage within ourselves."

The first lady continued by saying that through cinema, "Our children learn to open their imagination and dream just a little bigger and to strive every day to reach those dreams."

Whitney Port picks the Oscars' best-dressed ladies>>

A few comments were made throughout the night about Affleck not being given a Best Director nomination, including by the Oscar host himself.

"The story was so top secret that the film's director is unknown to the Academy," Seth MacFarlane said. "They know they screwed up. Ben, it's not your fault."

Affleck seemed to be the only one not upset over it . His acceptance speech was gracious and thankful.

"It doesn't matter how you get knocked down in life. All that matters is how you get back up," he said.

Affleck didn't miss the opportunity to make sure those associated with the other films in the category knew how much he appreciated them.

Then and now: Oscar nominees' fashion evolution>>

"There are eight great films that have every right, as much a right, to be up here as we do," he said of the other Best Picture nominees.

Michelle Obama and Jack Nicholson made a perfect duo for the presentation of the final award of the night at the 2013 Oscars. Their role was a well-kept secret, all the way to the end.

The Onion's nasty comment on Quvenzhané Wallis

Did The Onion go too far? We think so.

The Onion gets mean with Quvenzhane Wallis

There's nothing cuter than a little girl all dressed up and excited. At age 9, Quvenzhané Wallis was one of the youngest people ever to be nominated for an Oscar.

It was a huge night for the precious little girl. Her movie, Beasts of the Southern Wild, was up for multiple awards and there wasn't a dark cloud in her sky.

Quvenzhané and other young Oscar noms>>

That is, until The Onion went from satirical news to classroom bully in just one tweet. The tweet we're talking about said, "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c*nt, right? #Oscars2013"

Ouch! Really? If, for some reason, Quvenzhané had acted like a brat during the ceremony or on the red carpet, there are probably a million words The Onion could have used to get its point across. That one, though, is just a little too harsh.

First, that's still a word that even the filthiest of American mouths don't often spew. More important, though: Quvenzhané is 9 years old! No 9-year-old should ever be subjected to a comment so vulgar.

Seth MacFarlane kills it at the Oscars>>

Many of The Onion's followers agree. It sounds like quite a few of their readers ended up unfollowing the fake news site's Twitter feed. The people at The Onion quickly realized their mistake and deleted the cruel message within an hour after it was posted, but the damage was already done.

The Oscars changes its name>>

On Monday, The Onion's CEO Steve Hannah issued a public apology for the monumental mess-up.

"No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire," Hannah said in a statement on The Onion's website. "Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry."

Hannah also shared that the satirical news organization is "taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible."

What do you think? Did The Onion go too far?

Quvenzhané Wallis to star in Annie remake

The sun will come out tomorrow for Quvenzhané Wallis, who's officially signed on for Sony's big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Annie.

Quvenzhané Wallis at awards show

Some wondered if being the youngest Best Actress nominee ever at this year's Oscars might level a curse on Quvenzhané Wallis' future career. Doesn't look like that's going to happen: The 9-year-old has signed on to take the lead role in Sony's buzzed-about Annie reboot.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's Overbrook Entertainment production company began developing the project several years ago, with an eye toward casting daughter Willow Smith in the lead role. But at an elderly 12, Willow was deemed too old to take on the role of the plucky orphan, said to be 10 in the original Little Orphan Annie newspaper comic strip, in the blockbuster Broadway musical adapted from the strip, and the 1982 movie adapted from the stage musical.

"With the recent Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star," Sony production president Hannah Minghella said in a statement reported by Entertainment Weekly.

"She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her," Minghella added.

Wait, so Wallis can act and dance and sing and sport the chic-est purse ever seen on the red carpet? That's a quadruple threat!

Annie remake gains director, Willow Smith ages out>>

Jay-Z is set to produce the soundtrack for the movie. Anyone else starting to get the feeling that this Annie will look and sound a little different than the much-beloved 1982 film which starred Albert Finney, Carol Burnett and Aileen Quinn as the redheaded orphan?

That movie boasted hits like "Tomorrow" and "It's a Hard Knock Life," a retro look and little Quinn in a curly red wig and red-and-white dress that's so iconic it's still used as an instantly recognizable Halloween costume, more than 30 years after the movie came out.

Director Will Gluck is attached to helm the project, and the original screenplay was written by Emma Thompson. Yes, that Emma Thompson! She writes scripts too, you know. For instance, she wrote both of the Nanny McPhee movies in which she starred, as well as 1995's Sense and Sensibility.

Will she write a role for herself in the Annie remake? Can we hope she'll take on the role of Mrs. Hannigan, the boozy orphanage proprietress Carol Burnett played so memorably in the 1982 movie?

Is Madonna too racy for Instagram?

The singer hasn't been on the photo-sharing site long but has already received a warning for "adult content." But how bad was that content?

Madonna

Thirty years after she was first launched on to the international stage, Madonna still has it. It looks like she's still getting in trouble for the same things she did at the beginning of her career .

Prince still jealous of Madonna, 20+ years later>>

According to Billboard, the singer received a warning message from Instagram telling her she had broken their policies, which include a promise not to post “mature content.”

"We value these guidelines, and believe that they will help keep Instagram a safe & fun place for everyone," the message said, according to Billboard. "It is important to note that continuing to violate them may result in a disabled account, or discontinued access to Instagram, without warning."

The message also said it is against policy to share third-party photos, which would be a much less edgy way to break policy, but still possible.

Highest-grossing 2012 tour? Not Bieber — Madonna!>>

“The message didn’t specify which guideline Madonna apparently broke, though she has posted a shot of her cleavage as well as two photographs of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo,” said Billboard. “Both could potentially, in Instagram's view, be a violation of the guidelines.”

Madonna joined the photo-sharing site only recently, but already has 152,000 followers.

The singer doesn’t seem too worried about the message, since she could probably buy the site if she really wanted. For the second time in two years, she was named pop’s top earner, just edging out Bruce Springsteen and Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters.

According to Billboard, she earned around $34.6 million in 2012, due in large part to her MDNA tour.

Bruce Springsteen followed Madonna closely with $33.4 million and Waters brought in $21 million. Van Halen was close behind with $20 million.

"Moral perversion" case against Madonna thrown out>>

The list makes an interesting point that the top pop earners are artists from two decades or more ago. Could we be returning to the '80s?

Anne Hathaway's nipples get their own Twitter account

Anne Hathaway looked gorgeous in the pale-pink Prada she chose for the Oscars last night. But one aspect of her look is getting all the attention.

Anne Hathaway and her perky bust line

"Anyone else feeling a little chilly?" That's what Anne Hathaway's nipples were asking at last night's Oscars — that is, if the Twitter feed AnneHathawayNipples is to be believed.

The satirical account appeared almost immediately after the Best Supporting Actress award-winner said on the red carpet that she'd chosen the dress just three hours before she had to be at the ceremony.

"I was working too hard!" she laughed. "This was the one that spoke to me in the end. I like it."

Hathaway's choice of the Prada came as a surprise to designer Valentino, who had created a custom-made dress for the actress to wear for her big night.

According to Fashionista, the actress impulsively changed her mind about the dress when she saw Amanda Seyfried's gown, a lace Alexander McQueen number that Hathaway thought was too similar to her own Valentino dress.

Whitney Port on Oscars makeup: "Fresh and glowing">>

Not wanting to compete with one of her Les Misérables co-stars, Hathaway "freaked out" and asked stylist Rachel Zoe to bring in several dress choices ASAP.

So was that why the bust darts on the Prada gown lay awkwardly on Hathaway's bust, creating the illusion of permanently erect nipples? No time to tailor?

No one's talking today. Except for @HathawayNipple, which posted last night, "We'd just like to point out that we won Best Supporting Actress without *any* support" and "SO glad we didn't poke Kristin Chenoweth's eyes out." Ha ha!

Starting snarky Twitter accounts to comment slyly on the Oscars is beginning to be a bit of a trend. @AngiesRightLeg started its life just after the 2012 Oscars; last night it posted "just say no to @hathawaynipples SHE is NO ME!"

Healthy sleep habits for Mom and Baby

For many new moms, the memories of sleeping eight hours straight through the night are now a thing of the past, but fortunately there are ways to help your baby out in the sleep department.
Baby sleeping with mom

For many new moms, the memories of sleeping eight hours straight through the night are now a thing of the past, but fortunately there are ways to help your baby out in the sleep department.

Hush little baby... please!

But have no fear — you will get to sleep. You just have to be creative when you're searching for some much needed zzzzs. And as someone who has conquered sleep deprivation head on and made it to the other side, here are some tried-and-true tips that'll help you get some rest while getting your little one to sleep through the night.

Napping strategies

Grab a cat nap the moment your baby goes down for the count. If your friends and family members are telling you to sleep when the baby sleeps, take their advice! Even if it's the middle of the afternoon, resist the urge to do the laundry or take a shower.

Don't let the baby sleep for long stretches during the day. If the baby is confusing night and day, then you will have to do whatever you can to keep your little one awake during daylight hours. The last thing you want is for your baby to sleep five hours during broad daylight — because if that happens, you'll be on the same sleep schedule as an Eskimo.

Bedtime hints

Lights out at 8 p.m. If you've set a time for your baby to go down to sleep, then it's time to set your own curfew — especially when you're coping with an infant that's awake every few hours. Sleeping when your baby sleeps is so important during the beginning, and you'll want to keep your nursing schedule on time to prevent supply issues.

Put the baby back in their crib or bassinet. While many parents are advocates of co-sleeping, I personally found it incredibly difficult to get a sound sleep when my baby was only a few inches away from me. In fact, I still remember when we kept my daughter's bassinet in our bedroom and I was attuned to every breath, sudden movement and tiny cry. If you get the baby acclimated to their surroundings from the beginning, both of you will experience a better night's sleep. And if you don't want to be away from your baby, invest in a daybed or mattress that you can keep in the nursery. You deserve a good night's sleep too and don't you ever forget it!

Teach your baby to fall asleep on his/her own. While there's nothing more comforting than having a baby rest their weary head on your chest, you'll find that it's incredibly difficult to get them to fall back to sleep without the sound of your heartbeat. Instead, try a white noise machine to help soothe your little one to sleep.

Keep unplugged

Avoid television and computer time in the evening. As much as you may want to jump online, if you are sleep deprived, the best medicine for new mothers is a good book or a soothing cup of herbal tea .

Kim Kardashian eats her words about baby before marriage

Kim Kardashian's learned a thing or two about judging other people. The mom-to-be previously had strong feelings about having a baby before marriage, but is now eating a slice of humble pie.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian, Cosmopolitan magazine cover girl, is showing off just a sliver of mid-section skin on the April 2013 issue. Opening up about pregnancy, relationships and marriage, the mom-to-be says she now believes she can have it all.

Admitting she was judgmental of sister Kourtney Kardashian, who got pregnant with son Mason with no ring from Scott Disick, Kim Kardashian explained to Cosmopolitan, "I was like, 'You’re not married! How could you do this?' I was really firm and strict. But she was like, 'Marriage isn’t what I want.' And later, I realized she had a better family life than I did."

Could divorce stress hurt Kim Kardashian's pregnancy? >>

Speaking of sister Khloe Kardashian's rushed walk down the aisle, the mom-to-be, who is still married to estranged husband Kris Humphries, went on, "I saw fast marriages like Khloe and Lamar’s and that was what seemed to work. [Now] I say give it a good six months before you commit. Feelings change, even if it seems so lustful."

Now happily in love with dad-to-be Kanye West, Kim Kardashian shared of their relationship:

“Sometimes you’re just not ready. A person could have it all, and you’re not ready for it all. But this is where I probably always should have been…[marriage] is something I know that we both want in our future, but I don’t have this sense of urgency about it. I have this best friend who understands me and helps me through all my tough experiences, and vice versa, you know? It just feels like this is it for me."

Janet Jackson wedding rumors are gossip no more, though those hoping for a personal invite are out of luck! The singer and billionaire Wissam Al Mana have already tied the knot.

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is officially a married woman. The singer and Wissam Al Mana broke the news they are man and wife in a joint statement issued Monday, that was part announcement — and also partly designed to squash rumors!

In a statement to ET, Mr. and Mrs. Al Mana dropped the marriage bomb, explaining, "The rumours regarding an extravagant wedding are simply not true. Last year we were married in a quiet, private, and beautiful ceremony."

Janet talks Jackson family drama >>

No lavish affair, no private jets to fly the entire Jackson family to Qatar? So much for that gossip about a $20 million price tag!

All the same, allow us to offer very belated congratulatory wishes to the bride and groom.

Further downplaying the role extravagance and frivolous spending played in their wedding day, they went on to explain, "Our wedding gifts to one another were contributions to our respective favourite children's charities."

Janet Jackson lands on PETA's naughty list>>

This is the third marriage for the 46-year-old singer, who aims to keep her niece Paris Jackson out of the limelight as long as possible, but not the first ultra-private relationship. Jackson's marriage to James DeBarge was annulled in 1985, while in 2000 she divorced Rene Elizondo Jr., whom she had secretly wed in 1991. Nine years is a long time to keep a marriage under wraps!

Speaking of their longing for the quiet life, the newlyweds' message went on to request, "We would appreciate that our privacy is respected and that we are allowed this time for celebration and joy. With love, Wissam and Janet"

Are you surprised Janet Jackson's wedding was so small and quiet?

Needles and TTC

A common and effective practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine today is to have an acupuncture treatment immediately before and immediately after IVF.

Studies have shown this practice to increase the number of resulting pregnancies by as much as 50 percent as compared to IVF treatments that did not employ TCM concurrently.

When my RE first recommended acupuncture, I was more than a little apprehensive. The thought of having dozens of tiny needles sticking into my flesh scared me to death, but I tried to remain focused and open-minded, plus I am willing to try anything in my quest to have a baby.

Although I don't always know what's going on inside my body and I'm not pregnant yet, in the year and a half that I have been receiving acupuncture treatments, I have noticed a decrease in my stress level overall and greater consistency to my menstrual cycle, not to mention with the aid of acupuncture, I was able to get rid of a cyst on one of my ovaries.

The American Pregnancy Association defines acupuncture as, "the insertion of ultra-thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on the body which reside on channels or meridians; these are pathways in both the exterior and interior of the body." These points, when needled, can regulate the way in which the body functions.

There are many studies showing that acupuncture can increase success rates of IVF. Western doctors are beginning to embrace it, sometimes sending their patients to acupuncturists for specific conditions. And the federal Food and Drug Administration takes it seriously enough to regulate acupuncture needles for use by licensed practitioners.

Acupuncture and TTC

I talked to Kelly LeGendre L.Ac., owner of The Fix Community Acupuncture and founder of HappyMamaHealthyBaby.com who specializes in fertility. LeGendre treats both women looking to get pregnant without the assistance of reproductive technologies, as well as those undergoing IUI and IVF. For patients undergoing IVF, she typically accompanies them to their endocrinologist's office and performs acupuncture immediately before egg retrieval and after embryo transfer.

"Acupuncture has been shown to improve ovarian function and encourage your body to produce higher quality eggs."

According to LeGendre, "Acupuncture has been shown to improve ovarian function and encourage your body to produce higher quality eggs, increase blood flow to the uterus and aid in thickening of the uterine lining, decrease side effects associated with hormonal therapy, and relieve the stress and anxiety associated with trying to conceive. Receiving acupuncture immediately before egg retrieval and after embryo transfer has been proven to dramatically increase the likelihood of pregnancy, reduce uterine contractions after transfer and decrease the possibility of miscarriage."

Acupuncture is also very effective for calming down the body and reducing stress, which can be a major deterrent when trying to conceive. Nowadays, even with a dozen or more needles stuck in my body, I often fall asleep during my treatments, they are that relaxing!

Costs of acupuncture

Acupuncture treatments can vary dramatically in cost, depending on how long you are treated and while many insurance companies cover the cost of acupuncture, some do not when treatment involves infertility, so check your policy carefully.

Acupuncture and IVF

To read the study showing increased rate of IVF pregnancy with acupuncture, visit the National Center for Biotechnology Information and to find an acupuncturist in your area, visit the American Pregnancy Association or consult with your reproductive medicine specialist for a recommendation.

It would be irresponsible of me to encourage desperate women trying to conceive to waste their time and money on a practice that I didn't use or believe in myself. I feel using an East-meets-West approach to care and aid in my infertility will ultimately yield optimal results.

10 Foods most craved by pregnant women

What pregnant woman crave

One of the best — and worst — things about being pregnant is all the random food cravings. Though some women reportedly crave chalk, fortunately that's not one of the top 10 cravings pregnant women face.

A pregnancy craving differs from a regular craving in the sense that it's about a million times stronger. You wake up with a burning desire for a Chipotle burrito or an ice-cold root beer and will go out of your way to satisfy that craving. You'll drive miles upon miles to meet the craving and have no shame in waking your husband up in the middle of the night to go buy and cook you bacon. Hey, what baby wants, baby gets, right? Let's take a look at the top foods craved most by pregnant women and why!

1

Ice

Pice cuberegnant women love to chew on ice. Seems strange, since it's not really a food and doesn't seem in any way satisfying to those of us not with child, but for some reason pregnant women just can't get enough. Those with anemia are more likely to be seen chewing on ice, since it can relieve inflammation of the mouth and tongue .

2

Chocolate

Tip: If you're worried about indulging too much, satisfy your chocolate craving by drizzling low-fat chocolate syrup on fresh fruit.

Chocolate — or any sweet for that matter — is something pregnant women can't get enough of. This could be because chocolate makes you happy, and since there's no drinking for pregnant women, chocolate is literally the next best thing. An old wives' tale states if you crave sweets it means you're carrying a girl.

3

Spicy foods

Spicy foods, such as curry or hot red peppers, are yet another common craving among pregnant women. Interestingly enough, it's because hot foods make the body sweat, which cools off the body. If you're currently expecting, you know it's almost impossible to stay cool. Try adding some spice to your next meal to see if it helps cool you!

4

Pickles

pickle

Women who crave pickles could be low in sodium, but there's no real proof of this. Some like the crunch, some like the vinegar and some like the refreshing taste. Whatever it is, pickle cravings are nothing to be too concerned about. They're low in calories, easy to get and inexpensive.

5

Potato chips

potato chips

Potato chips, like pickles, are loaded with salt. Again, you could be low in sodium, but, more than likely, you're just desiring something salty and crunchy, and potato chips are what comes to mind. Since they're high in fat and calories, try reaching for some low-fat popcorn instead.

6

Fruit

Pregnant women don't just crave junk food . They crave fruit as well. You want a healthy baby, so sometimes it needs extra healthy foods to make sure that happens. Fruits, such as watermelons and grapes, are cool and refreshing, all while providing your body and baby with a boost of vitamin C.

7

Lemon

It's not unheard of to see a pregnant woman eating a straight lemon or adding a ton of it to their water. Pregnant women crave sour foods. The reason? Your taste buds change and typically you like to "shock" them with super-sour or super-spicy foods.

8

Ice cream

ice cream

Ice cream is sweet, it cools you off and it's rich and creamy. With so many flavors to choose from, a pregnant woman could literally spend hours in the ice cream aisle. For a healthier version, buy low-fat vanilla frozen yogurt and top with fresh fruit. You may kill two cravings in one sitting!

9

Soda

soft drink

If you've experienced or are experiencing morning sickness, a fizzy, carbonated soda may be just what you need. Carbonation settles the stomach and may take away that queasy feeling you've had all day. Try ginger ale or Sprite, as caffeinated beverages should be avoided during pregnancy.

10

Coffee

And finally, even though some doctors say it's a no-no, coffee is commonly craved by pregnant women, especially those who drank it before conceiving. Coffee makes you more alert and decreases headaches and depression. Check with your doctor before deciding to partake in a cup o' joe, though.

Ever wonder if there was a formula to make yourself the perfect companion? Cher Lloyd's sorcery found a way, so step into her castle and find out how she does it!

Cher LloydEver watched The Craft?

It was a teen movie from the '90s that I can remember first made witchcraft sexy and empowering. Now, witches are no longer the green, big-nosed monsters of the past I mean how hot was Emmy Rossum in Beautiful Creatures ?

Which role was Emmy Rossum "too pretty" for?>>

Take that sexiness and contrast it with the bubbly personality we've all come to know and love Cher Lloyd for, and you have her latest music video for "With Ur Love".

An ethereal princess with a vampy dark side is on the lookout for love and she relies on her loyal coven to help recruit the perfect man. They invite handsome men over to extract their favorite traits and brew them into the ideal mate . It appears they're successful by the end of the video — however, I never got to see his face! Perhaps he looks like David Beckham...

Are the Beckhams expecting?>>

Positive reception

The part-angel, part-temptress is adorned with corsets, luxurious dresses and accessories my favorite being a dazzling jeweled headpiece. Her outfits are responsible for most of the video's charm, as it excites both the fairytale-loving and the gown-adoring fashionista.

While Cher Lloyd often reminds me of her mentor Cheryl Cole, her evolution as an artist has her breaking off into her own style — as marked by this video and others recently.

Have you seen Cheryl Cole's latest video with Girls Aloud?>>

Miss Lloyd's website is ablaze with comments on her new video, and Perez Hilton put it best: "We’ve never seen our beloved Cher take on such a FIERCELY sexy look." He couldn't be more spot on. Witness Cher balancing charming innocence and wicked temptress below!

Don't forget to let us know what you thought of the video — were you bedazzled, too?

Erin Andrews has a sleazy encounter with rapper 50 Cent

Erin Andrews encounters a sleazy 50 Cent during the Daytona 500 and he just can't seem to take no for an answer.

Erin Andrews on the sidelines.

Erin Andrews is talented and beautiful. Unfortunately for Andrews, it seems some men just can't act professionally toward her and have no qualms about literally chasing her on-camera for some additional affection.

That's where rapper 50 Cent, real name Curtis Jackson, comes in: the hip hop star spotted Erin Andrews at the Daytona 500 and even though she politely — and assertively — rebuffed his overt advances for hugs and kisses, 50 Cent continued to trail her through the crowd. Disgusting.

Erin Andrews splits from ESPN>>

Erin Andrews was with her camera crew for Fox Sports looking for driver Danica Patrick when she inadvertently came across 50 Cent. She politely hugged Jackson and handled his demands for a kiss, seemingly on the lips, with grace as she quickly turned her head so his lips landed on her cheek. 50 Cent wasn't satisfied, though, and reached out for another hug. While Andrews continued on her way to find Patrick, 50 Cent actually followed her with his arms outstretched and checked her out as she walked ahead of him.

Erin Andrews files multi-million lawsuit against hotel>>

50 Cent's encounter with Erin Andrews is obviously awkward and borderline offensive. You can check out the video footage of their meeting below. The chauvinistic and sexist move is clearly lost on 50 Cent when he tweeted just a few hours after the video went viral, "Hey I wanted to kiss her so I did."

It just goes to show Erin Andrews has to deal with sleazy guys pretty much nonstop at her job.

Charlie Sheen helps Lindsay Lohan again

Charlie Sheen really wants to get Lindsay Lohan back on track. He's given her money, hooked her up with designer clothes and now he's hired her to play his love interest on his show.

LindsayLohanAngerManagement

Charlie Sheen is coming to Lindsay Lohan's rescue again by hiring her for his FX show Anger Management. Lohan is set to play Sheen's love interest on the comedy show.

However, the troubled actress won't have to do much acting, she will play herself in the episode. Her "character" will have a romantic liaison with Sheen's character, an anger management therapist, even though she's his patient.

This isn't the first time the duo has wound up in bed together on set. They are co-starring in the upcoming film, Scary Movie 5. It was rumored that Lohan refused to kiss Sheen during the scene, causing a series of on-set rewrites.

After working together, the Anger Management star gave the starlet $100,000 to help her pay off some of her tax bill. Reportedly, the Freaky Friday star owes about $234,000 to the IRS.

Lindsay Lohan's film, The Canyons, finds a distributor>>

Sheen really is trying to give the girl a chance. He even vouched for her to borrow a designer dress to the recent amfAR event in New York City. Unfortunately, Lohan returned the dress in tatters.

If anyone understands a second chance, it is definitely the former bad boy. Even though he lost his job on Two and a Half Men in 2011, FX gambled with employing the actor again. Anger Management had a strong first season on the cable channel. Season 2 just debuted in January.

Both Lohan's episode and Scary Movie 5 will debut in April.

Do you think this will be Lindsay Lohan's big comeback?
