It's time to get out the celebratory champagne because your not-so-secret crush of the '00s, Chad Michael Murray, is now a a father of two.

More: Is Chad Michael Murray Going to Be a Dad?

Murray welcomed a daughter with actor and wife Sara Roemer late Monday night. Murray posted an adorable photo to his Instagram in the wee hours of Monday night, where he opened up with pride and joy at the newest addition to his family.

Murray captioned a photo of his newborn daughter gripping his finger with the following: "Don't worry little girl you can hold on as tight as you want for as long as you want, I'm already yours & I'll never let go. I've now two incredible women in my life. My son & I are two lucky guys." I don't know what's cuter: Murray and his daughter sharing a precious moment or the caption that is accompanying it.

More: Chad Michael Murray, Kenzie Dalton End 7-Year Engagement

The couple have yet to announce the name of their newborn daughter, although it is unlikely we will learn her name any time soon. The couple have remained quite mum on the topic of their children, choosing to preserve their privacy rather than expose them to the incredibly public world their parents are exposed to daily. We, the fans and general public, still have yet to learn the name of Murray and Roemer's young son who will turn 2 this June.

Murray, it would appear, has always loved fatherhood. When he spoke to Entertainment Tonight in June 2016, he revealed that becoming a father has changed his life for the better. "For me, it was the greatest thing that's ever happened to me. Having kids is a game changer and I think you're always walking around with the mentality that you want to make sure that they're proud and you want to represent them well and just be a great leader," Murray remarked. With an attitude like that, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Murray has secured his best role to date: doting dad.

Here's Why You Should Plan Your Next Girls' Night Out at Plant Nite

As a rule, I tend to avoid group activities. Not necessarily because I don’t like being in groups of people, but because I usually find them cheesy and I don’t really like being told what to do en masse. But I jumped at the idea of covering Plant Nite — an event where participants make terrariums, drink and be merry — because the end goal for my apartment is for it to look like the one belonging to that creepy guy in Twin Peaks.

More: 9 Young Black Creatives Who Are Making History

My event was at a hotel in midtown Manhattan (although Plant Nite hosts events in 50 cities across the U.S.), and upon arrival, we were given Plant Nite personalized aprons, which I loved. There was still about 10 minutes until the event started, so I grabbed an amaretto sour and a sandwich because I hadn’t eaten dinner, and despite my tough and hardened exterior, I have the tolerance of a 2-year-old and would have been out before we got to the actual planting part if I didn’t get anything in my stomach.

When we started making the terrarium (a simple glass bowl that would eventually house the plants), the night moved along quite nicely.

The first thing I noticed when we started was the fact that you need approximately no planting skills to follow these instructions. The instructor was incredibly clear and helpful, which was nice, because I was convinced for the first 10 minutes that I hadn’t put enough rocks in. This is around the same time that I decided to start eating for some reason, and if you’ve never eaten half of a ham sandwich with one hand and scooped soil into a bowl with the other, I do not recommend it.

After this, came (in my opinion) the most exciting part of the night: choosing your succulents. They were all tiny and adorable and it pained me to only choose three, but sacrifices must be made at Plant Nite. With much deliberation, I chose mine and carefully planted them. I’ve never been a parent, but I imagine this is exactly how it feels to see your newborn child for the first time. These tiny life forms were now under my care. The responsibility weighed heavily, but I feel like I can handle it.

More: How to Get Killer Confidence

They provided us with little accoutrements — rocks, crystals and moss — to make the terrarium more aesthetic. I immediately went overboard, because of course I did, but after seeing others’, I dialed it back to just a few rocks and crystals. I ended up with what I perceived as a classy, natural environment that I decided to name William Henry Terrarison, because I’m apparently a huge nerd.

Image: SheKnows

If, like me, you’re not much of a partier (or honestly, even if you are) Plant Nite will be kind of perfect for you. The atmosphere is relaxed enough that you can take your time to sip your drink and talk to your friends or the others at the event and never feel rushed or overwhelmed. There’s also a wonderful sense of satisfaction when the night is over that you’ll wake up in the morning with something you made and not a hangover. (Or maybe both? I’m not judging.)

Overall, I had a really great time at Plant Nite. The environment was nice and welcoming, and making the terrarium was incredibly easy for obvious beginners like myself. I loved the finished product, and since it requires the literal least amount of care, I’m optimistic about its chances of surviving past next week.

What You Need to Know About Toxic Shock Syndrome (and How to Prevent It)

$
0
0

If you have ever taken the time to thoroughly read through the back of a tampon box, you’ll find a message that reads, “Warning of toxic shock syndrome.” You may be thinking, “What the heck is toxic shock syndrome and do I need to be concerned for my health?” Before you begin to panic, we have the answers.

What is toxic shock syndrome?

According to the Mayo Clinic, toxic shock syndrome is a rare condition caused by deadly toxins resulting from staphylococcus aureus bacteria. In other words, toxic shock syndrome is a buildup of dangerous bacteria, which will have an extremely negative affect on your health.

More: Startling Rise in Babies Born With Syphilis

Because of the clogged bacteria, it’s possible to get toxic shock syndrome from leaving in a tampon for more than eight hours. Because the condition has been associated with the use of super-absorbent tampons, manufacturers have pulled certain tampons off the market, thanks to which the statistics of women getting toxic shock syndrome has dramatically declined.

Menstruating women are not the only people who can suffer from toxic shock syndrome. Risk factors for the syndrome also include people who have had recent skin infections or surgeries, according to Merck Manual.

Symptoms and treatment

The symptoms of toxic shock syndrome include a fever, low blood pressure, headache, confusion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash and seizures, according to Healthline. Because these symptoms are common with other illnesses and health factors, visit your doctor to be sure you have the correct diagnosis.

Toxic shock syndrome should be taken seriously, as it is considered a medical emergency. Visit your doctor immediately if you think it is possible you may have toxic shock syndrome. Your doctor will most likely prescribe you antibiotics that will help fight the bacteria. It is possible that you will have to stay under the hospital’s care for a few days.

More: 39 and Pregnant... With Colon Cancer

Other treatments may include treating the underlying cause of the disease. For example, if the toxic shock syndrome was caused by a bacteria buildup from an over-absorbed tampon, your doctor will need to remove the tampon. If the syndrome was caused by surgical wounds, your doctor may drain any fluids to clear the infection.

How to prevent it

It is not recommended to wear tampons if you have a history of toxic shock syndrome because the disease can recur.

In order to prevent toxic shock syndrome, it is advised to avoid wearing tampons. However, if you prefer wearing tampons, be sure to change your tampon frequently (every four to eight hours) and wear a low-absorbency tampon.

In other cases of toxic shock syndrome, be sure to wash your hands often to remove bacteria. Keep cuts, including surgical wounds, clean by changing the bandages frequently.

This article isn’t meant to scare tampon users; tampons are great! However, it’s important to be aware of the disease and its causes so you are able to decrease the chances of getting it in the future.

"Thank you Venice! Its been 33 months and we have co-created 969 spirited events within our ever evolving Full Circle community! Today is our last day!" he wrote alongside a collage of images of Venice, the people who went to Full Circle and maybe some kind of... crystal? It's hard to tell.

Keegan confirmed to Page Six that he was forced to close Full Circle's door, but that he now has "an investor on the table" and plans to rebrand the organization as something a little different.

Full Circle "did close down, we did stop our organization as far as operations," Keegan explained, but soon after, the mystery investor offered funding to reopen the center.

"We’re reveling in some success with this … at the same time it continues to be a pretty dynamic workflow to take it to the next level," Keegan said. He went on the explain that Full Circle is going to move forward by focusing on wellness, offering its members "sound healing, educational, medical type practices, food and health."

Meet 57-Year-Old Model Mercy Brewer — She’s as Badass as You Imagined

By now you've hopefully seen the gorgeous photos from lingerie brand, Lonely, featuring the stunning 57-year-old model Mercy Brewer. But you may not have heard from the woman herself.

Brewer came from a rough childhood with few career prospects. She became a hair dresser at a career adviser's suggestion and ended up working for Irvine Rusk, who told her to consider modeling. She got her foot in the door as a model in London in the 1980s, eventually working with the best in the business from Kate Moss to Naomi Campbell. She moved to New Zealand in the early 2000s and focused on being a mother, taking odd modelings gigs and designing clothes including costume art, before getting on the catwalk again at New Zealand's Fashion Week last year.

More: 12 Inspiring Quotes About Gray Hair

You'd never know it from the images below, but this was Brewer's first work modeling lingerie. On choosing Brewer to be the face of their latest campaign, Lonely says, "Lonely felt Mercy perfectly embodied the the Lonely spirit that celebrates strong, confident women who challenge societal norms and aren’t always represented in mainstream media."

We asked Brewer a few questions about body positivity and the modeling industry. Spoiler alert: She's a badass.

SheKnows: You’ve had a hugely successful career in modeling. How do you feel about modeling’s history of focusing on a narrow range of body sizes? Do you see the body positive movement as an important one in modeling?

Mercy Brewer: Ancient Egyptians depicted a narrow range of body sizes, everyone was portrayed as eternally young and we are transfixed thousands of years later. Ancient Greeks ditto and the film industry. That's thousands of years of 'Behold, this is beauty and the rest of you can toddle off.'

Designers have every right to show their clothes on models they perceive will show their talents to the best advantage. They have a collection that can make or break them. From the first sketch of pen on paper in design school the body is represented as young, long and slender. The model is then sought to bring that vision to life. Voila.

SK: Do you think fashion's attitude toward age is changing? (We loved the Céline ad featuring Joan Didion a few years ago.)

MB: The millions of exclusions from this halcyon wonderclub are now standing up to be counted, and rightly so. To be excluded causes damage and low self-esteem whether as a child in the playground or as an adult who's value is decimated by being completely ignored. The fashion wheel is turning and it's eyes and arms are opening to embrace a more diverse and therefore more interesting and inclusive beauty than hitherto.

It is an extremely important, indeed an essential movement forward. Everyone deserves and has the right as an intelligent human being to feel celebrated, catered for and as valued as the next person.

Image: Harry Were/Courtesy of Lonely

SK: Lingerie ads very rarely target demographics older than, say, 30. Did it feel important to you to be part of something that acknowledged the sensuality and attractiveness of women past that age?

MB: I've never gotten down to my underwear in print before now. Despite not knowing the reception of the campaign, I was determined to back up Lonely's mission of giving everyone validity and value. If people didn't like it I was resolved to take a bullet for the team. As it's turned out the response so far has been phenomenal and extremely positive. That's a wonderful and encouraging reflection of the eyes and mindset of the times.

SK: Would you say that modeling helped you to feel comfortable in your body, or was it a barrier? Do you consider yourself body-confident now? If so, how did you get there?

MB: I was a clothes horse, so modelling underwear was unfamiliar territory. Age and life's lessons, not modelling has made me feel comfortable in my body. I am a woman, I've loved men, I've borne children, I am enough.

SK: What was your favorite piece to wear from the shoot and why?

MB: There is a stone white set Lulu, when I slipped it on, my grey hair shone like the moon. I was reminded of a poem by Byron.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

That's us older women right there. Not the mainstream beauty, but beauty none the less. Thank you Lonely.

7 Crafty Snow Day Activities

8 a.m.: Snow day! Fun!

9:23 a.m.: What am I doing with these kids? Send help.

We're right there with you, readers. There's nothing like the panic of realizing you have to entertain children for long periods of time at home.

Thankfully, children like making stuff. Squishy, messy stuff that you can create with ingredients you probably have in your kitchen right now. And haven't you been trying to use up that tartar sauce anyway?! So turn off the TV (momentarily) and let your kids pick one of these DIY projects (or all of them). Hey, you can even videotape it, put it on YouTube and maybe it goes viral. If you become famous, please give us credit.

More: Kaleidoscope Craft for Kids

Slime

Children all over the country are stockpiling glue thanks to the the current slime craze. And hey, we get it: It's fun and easy to create. You only need glue, Borax powder or laundry detergent and water. You can also add things like beads, lotion and food coloring to get different textures and colors. You'll find a recipe here. If you want to skip the Borax, here are some natural recipes. Maybe your children can sell it in the neighborhood so you can recoup some of your household's skyrocketing glue expenses.

Oobleck

Move over slime, because the Dr. Seuss-inspired Oobleck can be pretty entertaining too. You can pick it up like a solid but then it oozes through your hands like a liquid. And you only need corn starch, water and food coloring (optional). See how it's done here.

Puffy paint

Ever set up a whole painting project and your kids declare two minutes later, "I'm done painting!"? Well, this one lasts longer because they help make the paint first. And you only need shaving cream, white glue, flour and food coloring. Just remember the order of the ingredients seems to matter. You'll find a recipe here. Paint away, future puffy paint Picassos!

Play dough

Unless you just stocked up recently, your play dough is probably dried out. But there are lots of ways to make homemade play dough. You can even find ones that require no tartar sauce and no heating. And if you keep it in an airtight container, it will still be good on future snow days! (Is it too soon to mention the potential of more snow days?!)

Snow paint

Eventually, you will send those children outside in the snow. And before they have a chance to say, "It's too cold out here!" get them painting. To make snow paint, all you need are spray bottles and food coloring. And away they go! Parents can hopefully watch from the comfort of their homes.

Make a toy parachute

Getting tired of messy projects? This activity is easy and requires practically no cleanup. Just find a plastic grocery bag, a paper cup and some yarn, ribbon or string. You'll find the instructions here. You can even decorate your parachute. Happy flying!

Amber Tamblyn Reveals Her Baby Girl's Name

First off, we must say that we were holding out hope that Dauphinoise Petunia Brittany Scheherazade Von Funkenstein Mustard Witch RBG Cross Tamblyn-Bey Jr. would stand as the official name of Amber Tamblyn and David Cross' baby girl.

We were fully satisfied with this name released (in jest) by Tamblyn and Cross.

Couldn't they at least keep Dauphinoise?

More: Amber Tamblyn and David Cross win with the best baby announcement ever

Nope. Turns out the baby girl's real name is Marlow Alice Cross (acceptable, we admit it. Sweet, even).

But the cool story here? Guess who outed Marlow's official moniker? Hillary Clinton.

Tamblyn — Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants alum — is also a political activist, who most recently attended not one but two women's marches (while massively pregnant) the day after the inauguration. Her activism and her recent essay about motherhood and feminism clearly impressed former Secretary of State and recent presidential candidate Clinton, who wrote a warm letter to baby Marlow:

Hilary Clinton letter insta

More: Amber Tamblyn's essay on motherhood is a must-read

This was the first reveal of Tamblyn and Cross' daughter's (real) name. We're guessing Clinton got the intel by hacking into a microwave in the Tamblyn-Cross household. Like you do.

Did Amber know a letter like this was on its way for her first child? Nope. Her response was the same response we'd have had:

“The one day I decide to put mascara on Hillary Clinton sends us this letter for our daughter. Crying now,” Tamblyn said on Instagram. “A letter from one spectacular woman who has lived so much to another who has only just begun. My heart is as full as this diaper I’m about to change. Thank you, Hillary, grandmother to us all.”

Anyone who makes a full heart-full diaper comparison is more than OK in our books for the record. Same goes for anyone who has had the worst year of their lives, but still takes the time to write a lovely, empowering letter to a newborn baby girl and her parents. Well done, Hillary Clinton.

Why Aren't We Talking About the This Is Us Star Who's Saving Refugees?

Without a doubt, the cast of This Is Us is one of the hottest, most recognizable casts working on television right now. While we may naturally settle our focus on leads Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Chrissy Metz or Sterling K. Brown (all of these actors rightly deserve our attention), there's one star on This Is Us who is doing some vital humanitarian work outside of her starring gig that deserves a spotlight.

More: This Is Us' Chrissy Metz Is the Perfect Combo of Brains, Beauty and Talent

She plays Sloan Sandburg on This Is Us, but in real life, actor Milana Vayntrub is the co-founder of Can't Do Nothing, an organization committed to helping refugees in desperate need of care and assistance. The organization urges others to take an active role is helping in the refugee crisis currently at the forefront of many international social and political issues. This is an admirable initiative being taken by an actor with the means to make change happen; her work should serve as the impetus for us, the non-famous folk of the world, to sit up and take notice.

Gina Rodriguez/Milana Vayntrub Insta

According to the Can't Do Nothing website, Vayntrub was inspired to create her organization with entrepreneur Eron Zehavi after she took a trip with her father to Greece. For those who may be unaware, the Grecian isle of Lesbos has become a Syrian refugee haven since the crisis in Syria broke out. Every day, dozens upon dozens of families pile into life rafts and flee to the safety of Grecian shores. Vayntrub's experience with the great influx of refugees into Lesbos led to Can't Do Nothing and now, Can't Do Nothing is hoping to lead the way for others to get involved in the refugee crisis, too.

To be clear, I was astounded to find this out. Not the refugee crisis, mind you, but Vayntrub's connection to the refugee crisis and, more importantly, why she wasn't being asked about Can't Do Nothing more frequently. This is an incredible organization with a clear, simple message: get involved and do your best to help other people in need. To me, that's a message worth spreading.

Vayntrub's personal connection to the Syrian refugee crisis is hardly negligible either. Vayntrub was born in Uzbekistan and her family was forced to flee in the early '90s. Persecuted for their Jewish faith, the Vayntrubs fled the Soviet Union and came to America in search of freedom, stability and a better life; Vayntrub's work with Can't Do Nothing is indicative that she hopes to bring those ideals to Syrian refugees, too.

Vayntrub has peppered her Instagram with photos from her work in Syrian refugee camps. She has also made it a point to spread the hashtag #CantDoNothing on all social media platforms in an attempt to help raise awareness for the program's initiatives.

5 Things You Need to Know About Armpit Fungus

$
0
0
Things I Secretly Googled Banner

So we’ve all heard of yeast and fungal infections and where they can creep up on our bodies. But, did you know that the less-than-dynamic duo can come together in your armpit? That’s what we call armpit fungus, even though it can be a culmination of different types of bacteria or skin molds.

And while this isn’t something that you have to be scanning the web for to figure out if you have it (because trust us, you’d already know if you did), here are five helpful things to keep in mind in the event that you find yourself faced with this fungal foe.

Causes

Like most fungal infections, armpit fungus is caused by skin fungi. In this case, there are two different things to look out for: skin molds, also known as dermatophytes, which are a common cause for most skin diseases, and yeasts that consume the superficial layers of skin.

Oftentimes, when there are breaks in the skin, those lesions can get infected with the bacteria either because of irritation, sweating or even perfumes from certain deodorants that you can use. You can also contract it from fungal strands or spores that can be secondarily spread from scratching infected areas and then touching unaffected areas on your body.

More: Why You Should Switch From Antiperspirants to Natural Deodorants

Symptoms

Like most skin irritations, some common symptoms that come with armpit fungus include itching and burning because of excessive scratching and skin damage, noticeable flakes of skin on clothing or elsewhere and darker tinted discoloration of the armpit skin. And all of these are normally accompanied by a musky or foul odor. In the event that the rash is caused by a dermatophyte, the rash can resemble rings with borders that are red and raised. With yeast-based infections, a smelly fluid discharge can also accompany the flare-ups.

More: How to Tell if You Have a Yeast Infection

Spreading

Armpit fungus can be transmitted by direct and indirect contact with other people. Oftentimes, coming into skin contact with an already infected individual and then scratching unaffected parts of your body can embed the bacteria in your skin and cause you to contract the fungus in that area.

Treatments

The most common way to treat armpit fungus is to use topical antifungal ointments and powders, which thankfully, can be bought over the counter. These topical treatments should be applied several times daily over a few weeks. This works well for the fungal-based infections, but in the event that you have a yeast-based infection, you can also use the same ointment used for vaginal yeast infections.

Steps to prevention

Be sure to treat all infected areas on your body to help prevent cross-contamination and recurrence in other places. And since most fungal infections can be transmitted through direct and indirect transmission, don’t share towels, clothes or any other personal items with other people who are also infected.

Another important thing to keep in mind is to make sure that the infected areas stay clean and that you wash them properly and thoroughly when bathing — you can also remove any hair if there is fungus attached to it, but otherwise, it would be wiser to keep the hair until the infection resolves.

Avoid any deodorants or antiperspirants that you used prior to the infection, as they may also have the fungus on them. To help with all of these steps, try to wear lighter clothing to promote ventilation and prevention of sweaty buildup or use antifungal drying powder if you’re wearing a heavy sweater. You'll be ready for those strapless dresses in no time!

The former couple already had a long, contentious divorce that they settled last year. But since then, Frankel has accused Hoppy of stalking and harassing her, and he just turned down a plea deal, indicating that he wants to fight her allegations in front of a jury.

In the deal that prosecutors offered Hoppy, he could have pleaded to just a harassment charge as a violation in exchange for completing an anger management course. Through his attorney, Alex Spiro, he refused the deal. The judge overseeing the case, Abena Darkeh, set a court date for April 26 and ordered Hoppy not to have any contact with Frankel between now and then.

According to complaints filed by Frankel, Hoppy has sent her alarming and threatening texts and emails since November. He was arrested in late January when he showed up unannounced and confronted Frankel and her boyfriend at their daughter's school.

According to the complaint, Hoppy told Frankel, "You can play your game. It doesn’t matter. You can get 10 lawyers. There’s nothing you can do to stop me. You’ll be sorry. You’ve been warned."

He then allegedly turned to Frankel's boyfriend and told him, "She’s pure evil. You’ve been warned."

Court papers also say Hoppy sent Frankel about 160 emails between November and when he was arrested on January 27.

Hoppy and Frankel married during a TV special in 2010. They split two years later and then spent nearly four years settling their divorce. They kept the terms of their divorce private, but Frankel revealed later the mixed emotions she felt when Hoppy finally moved out of the Tribeca apartment they had shared.

"I walked in and it just washed over me. I sobbed for hours. It was like this release," she said on her SiriusXM show, B Real with Bethenny. "And you always think things are going to be one way. I thought it was going to be, like, the biggest party ever. I’d be rollerskating through there with my top off, my tits hanging out, so excited and there’s nothing good about any of it. It was all just remembering moving in there. It was a hideous experience, and I just didn’t know how to even process the feeling."

Blake Shelton has a bit of a reputation on The Voice. He's a country guy, so of course he loves to work with fellow country artists.

More: Alicia Keys Has the Key to Winning Over Contestants on The Voice

Shelton has no reason to apologize. His approach has garnered repeated wins. He boasts a clear understanding of what appeals to the show's audience, plus the willingness to play dirty, when necessary. Still, a lot of critics seem to think he could use a little branching out (never mind the fact that one of his biggest successes thus far involved R&B artist Jermaine Paul).

Tonight, Shelton added some much-needed pop to his Season 12 lineup. Dawson Coyle — latest member of Team Blake — certainly deserves the honor; his rendition of "Happiness" was light and enjoyable, just as it was supposed to be. It was also extra meaningful given his family's recent struggles. As he explained during his intro segment, his home burned down, destroying his mother's work space and his beloved musical equipment.

Coyle took solace in his church community and in his music. Both made him realize that he has a lot to be thankful for, even in the face of such loss. He chose his song accordingly; the lyrics mention a "homesick heart," but also the importance of his "pursuit of happiness."

Shelton turned around not only because of Coyle's vocal chops, but also because of his clear passion for music. The coach exclaimed, "I've only heard you one time, but man, I believe you."

Coyle is exactly what Team Blake needs right now. Shelton is looking to capture votes from the pop audience, and he claims that he's "never had anybody quite like [Coyle]." If Coyle goes far on the show, Shelton will once again prove that he can successfully coach artists from a wide range of genres.

Tearjerkers are a dime a dozen during the first few episodes of The Voice, but it was nice to hear Coyle's tale of hope and gratitude. If he pours this much passion into every performance, he's sure to go far. We're looking forward to seeing more of him as Season 12 progresses!

Out of Left Field, Ben Affleck Is Out of Rehab, But He's Feeling Positive

Ben Affleck has thankfully exited rehab and is anticipating a successful recovery.

More: Insider Reveals Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner's Co-parenting Plans

Affleck announced his rehab departure on Facebook Tuesday evening. The actor wrote a lengthy post about exiting rehab, feeling positive, working toward kicking his alcohol addiction and his hope that, with the support of his family, he will be able to stay sober and healthy. It was a candid admission from Affleck, who is so frequently amiable and fun-loving in interviews, however guarded he is about his personal life. Reading his words about his hope for a brighter future was so endearing.

Affleck wrote in his post: "I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step. I’m lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I’ve done the work I set out to do. This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery." More precious than knowing that Affleck's family has rallied around him is the knowledge that Jennifer Garner will be there to help co-parent and possibly even help him recover too.

More: Insider Reveals Ben Affleck's Thoughts on Doing a Revenge Interview

All love aside (not that it's not a good thing), this news of exiting rehab makes sense of some of Affleck's behavior recently. Notably, I'm thinking of Affleck's will-he-won't-he debate over directing the planned solo Batman film. There's been much discussion over Affleck's excitement to direct and star in the film over the last few months. That excitement turned to confusion when production stalled, Affleck's directing confirmation turned into a "maybe," then a "no," and the reins were turned over to director Matt Reeves. Knowing that Affleck has been going through this time of upheaval and change centered on his need to be sober explains events like this mystifying professional upheaval.

This is not Affleck's first time out of rehab, either, making his hope for recovery that much sweeter. Affleck has struggled with alcohol for most of his life. While he was able to combat his addiction in the early years of his fame, mounting pressures from all sides reportedly broke through his tough exterior and sent him to rehab. A reported monthlong rehab stint in 2001 appears to be the first in a string of rehab stints since Affleck ascended to fame.

If you have dry skin, winter — and all the bitter, dry winds that come with it — can feel like torture. As it turns out, a simple thing you do twice a day isn’t making it any better: washing your face.

Still, by now, you probably know that soap isn’t the most hydrating thing you can put on your skin. In fact, traditional bar soaps can be quite drying thanks to harsh detergents and alcohol, especially if you’re not following up with a moisturizer as soon as you pat your face dry. But you don’t have to give up washing your face — instead, just ditch the harsh stuff.

Ahead, we found seven soaps for dry skin that won’t strip your face of the oils and moisture it needs. Oh, and it should go without saying, but the same goes for your body too, ladies. Our favorite picks for dry, easily irritated skin below.

How Much Hair Loss Is Normal?

Thing I secretly Googled

You finish showering, look down and see a surprisingly large clump of hair near the drain. Should you be concerned?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, we lose about 50 to 100 hairs per day naturally. When people lose significantly more than this, the medical term is called telogen effluvium, or excessive hair shedding.

More: 4 Reasons Why Pee in Pools Is Bad for Your Health

The causes include weight loss of 20 or more pounds, stress, recovery from an illness or operation or even something as simple as stopping your birth control. The good news? This type of hair loss is almost always temporary.

Hair loss, or anagen effluvium, has separate causes, which include harsh hair products, reactions of the immune system or hereditary loss. And unlike hair shedding, hair loss does not stop until the underlying cause is addressed, according to the AAD.

So how do you know what’s normal? Dr. Arielle Nagler, an assistant professor in the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center, spoke to SheKnows about different types of hair loss. Natural hair loss — the 50 to 100 hairs you lose per day — occurs any time you pull on your hair, brush your hair, or just move about, she said. That’s because your hair is constantly transitioning from the growth phase to the fall-out phase, Nagler explained, so this hair loss is a natural process that happens over time.

More: Startling Rise in Babies Born With Syphilis

But when you see any major changes in hair loss, it’s time to see a doctor. This could include unusual patterns of hair loss or itching and burning on the scalp, Nagler said. Any number of causes could be to blame: stress, medical illness or that tight ponytail.

In fact, tight ponytails or updos can actually cause something called traction alopecia, a condition that can become irreversible over time. And while you may be tempted to just lay off the updos and wait for hair to grow back, Nagler stressed the importance of seeing a dermatologist to help you decipher the underlying cause of any of these changes, since other kinds of hair loss — including ones that require medical attention — could look quite similar.

“Diagnosing what is causing hair loss is an art, so if you’re concerned, it’s important to see a dermatologist,” Nagler said. “A lot of it can be reversed or stopped if caught early enough.”

Bottom line? That clump in your shower is probably part of the normal 100 or so hairs you lose each day — but if you notice any major changes, see your doctor. And maybe save that tight ponytail for a special occasion.

The One Product That Gives Me Shiny, Beachy Waves — Sans Crunch

I've waxed poetic about how difficult my hair is many times over on this very site — it’s thin and flat and wimpy and requires at least half a dozen products to look decent. Among those products are a leave-in conditioner (Alterna Moisture Milk), a volumizing mist (Davines Volu Hair Mist), a volumizing mousse (IGK Trust Fund Foam), a heat-protectant spray (GHD Heat Protect), a texturizing powder (Sexy Hair Powder Play), a wave spray (Kristin Ess Wave Spray) and a finishing cream (Ouai Finishing Crème). If that sounds ridiculous, it’s because it is — and before you suggest I rearrange them or cut some or just let it air dry, please know I’ve spent the better part of the last two decades figuring this out, so when I say I’m not very open to change, believe it.

That us, until a few weeks ago, when a new product landed on my desk, as they’re wont to do. I often take new releases home to test them for my beauty editor Chloe since we have very different hair types, but I usually report back with mixed reviews. This time, it was R+Co’s Trophy Shine and Texture Spray on the chopping block, which is an oxymoron if I’d ever heard one. The release promised both volume and a glossy shine thanks to a mix of Fuller’s earth, a type of clay, sea kale and sweet almond oil, but it just sounded like a recipe for sticky, greasy strands.

Textured hair
Image: ImaxTree

Before I could even take it home, it had to pass the desk test. I flipped my head over, spritzed it on my already-dry-but-also-now-flat hair, zhooshed it around and looked in the mirror. I looked great. Suddenly, I had that mix of beachy and sexy and unfussy hair that magazines tell you is possible by just falling asleep with your wet hair in braids (LOL no) and it somehow didn’t look crusty, dry or fried — or all the other adjectives that come with daily heat styling. Chloe, ever the beauty skeptic, caught me looking in the mirror for the sixth time in as many minutes and assured me it’d probably look like crap in an hour.

The day was just about over, and I had to head to the gym, and in my tote bag went the spray. The next morning, I decided to forego my entire hair routine in favor of Trophy. I towel-dried my hair, spritzed it on after my heat-protectant spray, then blow-dried. Once it was mostly dry, I spritzed it again, scrunching my hair to force beach vibes into it. I waited for the crunchy feeling that usually comes along with texture sprays, but it never came. Then I waited for the weighed-down feeling that usually comes with shine sprays. Again, nothing; with the exception of some limpness near the crown of my head, I looked great. Like, really great. So great, in fact, that I needed to photograph the evidence even though I was already late for work:

Styled hair
Image: ImaxTree

See? My hair is at once beachy, shiny and touchable — no crunchiness or greasiness in sight. I still needed to apply some Powder Play to my crown — which, to be honest, I don’t think I’ll ever quit — but beyond that, I think I’m just about able to pare down my seven-step routine, especially on mornings when time is short.

Whole Foods Is the Latest Place to Recall Cheese Because of Listeria Risk

$

Lately, it seems like it’s really not all that safe to be a cheese lover. Recently, a bunch of supermarket shredded cheeses were recalled due to potential Listeria concerns — and it wasn't an isolated incident. Whole Foods also recently expanded their recall of certain raw cheeses after two people in the Northeast died of Listeria and six got really sick.

While there’s no evidence that the people who died bought raw cheese at Whole Foods per se (or even shop at Whole Foods), investigators believe these people were sickened by tainted cheese. So, Whole Foods’ action is one of precaution and not one that indicates they're guilty of selling people bad cheese.

More: Yesterday's Cheese Recall Now Includes Mushrooms and Other Snacks

The recalled cheeses were all cut and in a clear plastic wrap packaging with scale labels beginning with PLU codes 0200307, 0201357 or 0206308 and sell by dates from Jan. 2 to April 2, 2017. If you have any of these, don't eat them (no matter how hungry you are!).

If you're worried you may have listeria, keep an eye out for flu-like symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, stomach issues and, as it advances, headaches, stiff neck and confusion. Be safe out there, cheese eaters!

What Is Wellness Architecture & Does it Actually Work?

$

We think hard about what we put in and on our bodies, but what about our buildings?

Say hello to wellness architecture.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, architects are now creating buildings with health in mind. In other words, buildings that make us healthier and happier — literally.

It makes sense. We spend up to 90 percent of our time indoors, so the spaces where we live, work and relax have an impact on our well-being: how we feel, eat and even sleep at night.

What does a healthy building look like?

The trend is based on the Well Building Standard, a checklist of seven categories: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mental health. Developed by Delos and the International Well Building Institute, these are the blueprints for a healthy building — and they’re strict, to say the least.

More: 5 Health-Damaging Household Toxins

As IWBI CEO Rick Fedrizzi tells SheKnows, Well is a “holistic approach to how buildings can enhance our health and well-being instead of compromising it, which far too often is the case.”

Supporters of the trend call it "enlightened design" — it’s about getting rid of those interior design elements that cause stress and replacing them with health boosters.

Take lighting, for example. Light drives the body’s circadian rhythm, which triggers the hormones we need at certain times of the day, such as cortisol for energy, or melatonin for sleep. So, Fedrizzi says lighting has a profound effect on wellbeing.

“During the day, brighter white lights can inform our body that it is daytime, therefore increasing productivity and alertness, which is great for a student that needs to be studying. At night, warm lamps with a lower blue component can provide illumination for visual purposes while also preparing the body for rest,” he says.

More: Plants That Make Your Home Healthy

Wellness architecture also takes into account things like air and water supply, plus behavioral cues. For instance, Fedrizzi says the Well Standard requires “active design, such as centralized staircases to encourage physical activity, as well as access to nutritional information and healthy food options.”

In doing so, he says Well spaces improve the nutrition, fitness, moods, sleep patterns and performance of the people living in them.

And people are buying into it. There are now 350 Well-certified spaces worldwide, and the conversation is flowing, with The New York Times reporting that hospital design, known for its poor lighting and lack of privacy, may be slowing down patients’ recovery time.

Fedrizzi hopes that within a decade, wellness architecture will become “the new normal.”

How to make your home healthier

Not building from the ground up? No worries. There are plenty of ways to make your existing home healthier:

  • Use appropriate light sources (e.g. no bright bulbs in the bedroom)
  • Open blinds/curtains for natural light
  • Buy indoor plants — they have a calming effect and filter toxins from the air
  • Install living walls
  • Open windows and doors for airflow
  • Switch to a standing desk
  • Use solar power
  • Recycle
  • Opt for natural, nontoxic materials and textures, such as marble and wood
  • Decorate with earthy, calming colors
  • Declutter
  • Choose chairs that support good posture
  • Invest in appliances to encourage you to cook at home, like juicers and food processors
  • Go for organic and upcycled products when you can
  • Open up areas so you can see and interact with other people
  • Set aside a space for meditating, exercising or just chilling

Is this the only approach to modern architecture?

Some architects and designers consider functional and aesthetic needs to be just as important as well-being. Sydney-based architect Alex Roth says he creates spaces that reflect clients’ unique personalities, desires and lifestyles. By tapping into these quirks, he designs spaces that make the people using them feel at ease.

“Building a relationship with a client allows me to work out what it is that they value most in their lives, and how to create a design which encompasses these values,” he tells SheKnows.

More: Organizing Tips: Decluttering for a Healthy Home

As for the checklist, he says light, comfort and nourishment are essential, while fitness and mindfulness differ from client to client: “Because they are so unique to every person, I think they are important in design, but not a necessity in all spaces.”

The Family From That Viral BBC Interview Is Back

$

Oh, man.

"Professor's Skype Interview on Live TV Gatecrashed by His Kids" was the latest viral sensation — and it's divided folks almost as badly as did the "What Color Is the Dress?" question.

We're betting you've seen the video. If not, it goes a little something like this: A live Skype interview on BBC with an international relations professor in South Korea. The professor's interview goes awry when his two tiny children burst into his home office on camera! The professor tries in vain to continue! He shoves away his daughter without looking at her! A panicked woman bolts into the room to retrieve them! Who is she? Why doesn't the professor acknowledge her presence? Why doesn't he talk to his kids? Is this patriarchy at work yet again (annoyed white guy waiting for an anxious woman to hurry up and clean up the chaos created by kids)? Is this racism (hordes of people on the internet assuming the Asian woman who grabs the kids is the nanny)? Is this just a normal family?

More: Professor's BBC Skype Interview Totally Crashed by His Kids

The family says it's C. They're a pretty normal family. Yesterday, the professor, Robert Kelly, and his wife, Kim Jung-A, discussed the event in a less eventful — and less polarizing — video interview.

BBC INterview followup

BBC INterview followup

Kelly said he was immediately aware that his kids had busted in on him and was mortified. “I was just hoping that my wife would eventually see it and maybe find some way to run them out of the room."

“I was hoping that maybe my daughter might sit down and read a book or something, even for 30 seconds until we could just cut the interview, but once my son came in in the little roller, then it was sort of, then there was nothing I could do. I was just hoping you guys might cut it on your end and I was just sort of maintaining a straight face hoping to get through it,” he continued.

What was Kim's take on her interview-crashing kids and stoic husband?

“He usually locks the door,” she said. “Most of the time they come back to me after they find the locked door. But they didn’t. And then I saw the door was open. It was chaos for me.” Yeah, we could tell by her Kramer impression, skidding into the room, that she was definitely in an "oh shit" frame of mind.

Kelly and Kim were terrified that this viral chaos might harm Kelly's career. He apologized to the BBC after the first video, but BBC surprised the family by asking if they could release the clip online.

And the rest was internet history, as they say.

Kelly said during the second interview that he and his wife had to turn off their phones and steer clear of Twitter and Facebook and other social media sites because it was all too much attention. We've seen the arguments raging online about the clip, and not everyone (including us) loved Kelly's handling of the situation.

Let's just say we like the second video — with the entire family (including swagger-ific daughter Marion and Baby James) participating — a whole lot better than the first. Kelly smiles! Holds his baby! Laughs! His wife does not look stricken. She is animated and funny. The kids seem to have weathered the internet storm just fine.

Kelly and Kim said that the response to the interview gone wrong has been mostly positive.

“I mean, it was terribly cute,” Kelly said. “I saw the video like everybody else. My wife did a great job cleaning up a really unanticipated situation as best she possibly could... It was funny. If you watch the tape I was sort of struggling to keep my own laughs down. They’re little kids and that’s how things are.”
