Emma Watson Is Straight-Up Killing Her Beauty & the Beast Press Tour

Let me be frank: When I heard Emma Watson was going to be playing Belle in the live-action Beauty and the Beast, I was a little heartbroken. Belle is my princess, and it was my childhood fantasy to be her. Like, literally be her. The fact that Watson was going to get to live out my dream just seemed a little crushing.

But I got over it — pretty quickly and pretty easily, in fact. Yeah, OK, I'm still a little jealous, but that's it, I swear! Because Watson is amazing.

More: Emma Watson Continues Her Crusade for Girl Power

If anyone was going to take on the role of Belle (aside from me, of course), it should be Watson, with her constant class, feminist activism and intelligence.

As if we didn't already know Watson is the kind of woman all little girls should aspire to be, she's been proving it again and again with the way she's dominating the Beauty and the Beast press tour ahead of the movie's March 17 release.

1. Watson explains Belle's feminist update to MTV

emma waston mtv belle interview

emma waston mtv belle interview

"We have a couple of scenes where she's trying to teach a girl in the village how to read," Watson explained in a press interview with MTV. "And it's sort of really looked down upon. There's a really anti-intellectual feeling within the village that reading isn't for girls and shouldn't be allowed for girls and going to school shouldn't be allowed for girls, which we still see the world over."

Watson added that Belle wants more for girls than to "marry the village Gaston," a sentiment Watson herself strives to impart to young girls in real life.

2. Watson addresses that gay character issue

When news came out that LeFou would have a moment in the film that shows he's gay, a first for Disney, the criticism was quick and the controversy brutal. A movie house in Alabama has refused to show the film.

"The film represents the diversity of every society," Watson said, according to Inquirer. "It’s important to represent everyone. The other thing I would say is, watch it and then form an opinion."

3. Watson sets the record straight about her Vanity Fair cover photos

Watson did a photo shoot with Vanity Fair in which she showed off her feminine assets in a nearly topless photo. People immediately criticized Watson as hypocritical because, they said, by showing so much skin, Watson was going against her feminist values — whatever that means.

Watson also revealed that she was "quietly stunned" by the backlash.

"It just always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is about what feminism is," she explained. "Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women. It's about freedom, it's about liberation, it's about equality. I really don't know what my tits have to do with it."

4. Early reviews of Watson's performance are great

Watson's press tour isn't the only thing that's good. She's also a great actress in the role as Belle.

According to The Telegraph, Watson "dazzles" in the role, and Us Weekly reported, "Even the sight of Watson trying on gorgeous costumes in her bedroom is a wonder," adding that she "enchants" as Belle.

5. Watson wins at wardrobe

While there is something to be said for the Ask Her More movement, Watson is embracing all the fabulous fashion she's getting to show off while on the Beauty and the Beast press tour. In fact, she and her stylist have set up an Instagram account simply known as @The_Press_Tour to showcase Watson's outfits, which are sustainably made and environmentally friendly.

At press time, the account has 13 posts and 418,000 followers.

6. Jimmy Kimmel snowball fun

jimmy kimmel emma watson interview

Watson's press tour hasn't been all serious. In her interview with Kimmel, she talked about getting smashed in the face with snow repeatedly. And we got to see the scene. It's pretty hilarious.

7. The awesomeness of that lip bleach confession

Watson opened up about her beauty routine to Into the Gloss. Surprisingly and refreshingly, she didn't hold back on anything — including the fact that she's been getting her upper lip bleached since she was about 9 years old.

"It’s funny — I was just talking to my friend before this about how in the Instagram era, it’s so easy to edit your life so that it looks perfect. But I bleach my top lip and tweeze my eyebrows, and you’d never get to see that, even though it’s a part of my routine," Watson told the outlet. "There’s still so much shame around the things you do to get ready while you've got a towel wrapped around your head. It’s important to me not to edit that out."

The Truth About What Happens to Your Vagina During & After Menopause

$

0

For some people, having a tight vagina is a desirable trait — and they may even decide to undergo a surgical procedure to get one. But for others — particularly those who are menopausal and postmenopausal — vaginal tightness can be part of a larger painful condition called vaginal atrophy.

Among the rumors floating around regarding what causes it, one is that not having sex during and after menopause could result in your vagina closing up. But is that true? Is your vagina really use-it-or-lose it, like your health savings account at the end of the year?

MoreStartling Rise in Babies Born With Syphilis

In short, kinda. A lack of sexual activity may result in the contracting of the vaginal opening, making it smaller, particularly for those with vaginal atrophy. But it’s more complex than that.

Vaginal atrophy is characterized by dryness, inflammation and thinning of the lining of the vagina. Symptoms include the vaginal area appearing pale, shiny, dry and smooth, filled with little red dots and easily irritable. The vagina can also shorten and narrow, and as a result, may bleed easily.

So, what causes vaginal atrophy?

According to Dr. Yen Tran, an OB-GYN at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, it’s a drop in estrogen concentration in women, which may be worsened by the normal aging process, and usually develops gradually over a period of years. Additionally, the thinning of the vaginal skin makes it more susceptible to trauma, potentially leading to bleeding, ulceration and infection as well as painful intercourse.

Factors other than low estrogen levels can also impact the degree of atrophy, Tran told SheKnows, including stopping sexual activity, never having delivered babies vaginally, multiple prior vaginal surgeries, previous radiation to the area and/or being a smoker.

More39 and Pregnant... With Colon Cancer

Let's talk about sex

Speaking of sexual activity, Tran said that it does help preserve the vaginal area, presumably by increasing blood flow and tissue elasticity from mechanical stretching and exercise of vaginal tissue.

“Women who are sexually active with a partner or through masturbation or the use of vaginal dilators have fewer symptoms related to vaginal atrophy, including less urinary tract infection frequency,” she added.

For people who don’t have partners or have partners who can no longer have intercourse, the use of vaginal dilators (available in sets of graduated sizes) and masturbation with moisturizers may help maintain a healthy vagina.

But what if sexual activity is painful because of vaginal atrophy? This catch-22 situation is exacerbated by the fact that up to 70 percent of women with symptoms of vaginal atrophy do not discuss their condition with a health care provider, according to Tran.

“Cultural, religious and societal beliefs may play a role in making women feel uncomfortable discussing such concerns,” she added. “That is why it is important to find a gynecologist that you feel comfortable in sharing your intimate problems with.”

MoreWant to Experience More Orgasms? Here's What to Tell Your Partner

It's not an open-and-shut case

If you do have vaginal atrophy, there are ways to treat it, including tablets, rings, oral medications, topical estrogen (cream or suppository) as well as a laser procedure that stimulates the vaginal lining to develop normalizing thickness, followed by stretching using a dilator or resuming intercourse.

As far as the frequency of sexual activity, Tran said that the ideal is two to three times per week, if possible (although there’s no “official recommendation”). If not, she suggests mechanical stretching exercises like masturbation with moisturizers or usage of vaginal dilators.

“A healthy sex life after menopause looks a lot like a healthy sex life before menopause,” Dr. Marc Winter, an OB-GYN at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California added. “Things may take a little longer (response to stimulation may be longer) and help may be needed (treating atrophy in women and erectile dysfunction in men), but many women are able to continue to enjoy an active sex life as they age.”

Why You Need a Mom Getaway

$

Last May, three friends and I headed out to Palm Springs and took over a vacation house for our own little “Momchella.” Alana, Poukhan, Jenny and I got to recharge and take a little time out from wiping noses and watching Frozen. It was glorious.

And it’s not just an indulgence. Connecting with friends is actually important for your mental health. “We all know parenting is demanding, exhausting, intense and overwhelming. But connecting with other mothers is particularly important,” says marriage and family therapist Megan Costello. Maternal rates of depression and anxiety are lower in mothers who report close friendships and strong community connections, she notes.

In addition to maintaining friendships, a weekend getaway provides the chance to focus on yourself, away from your family. “Women tend to care for others first,” says Costello. “Women are socialized to do this; it is also an evolutionary imperative, so the drive to nurture and care for others can be a strong trait. Because we have this incredible drive to nurture, we must work hard to prioritize self-care.”

A short weekend with friends can really do wonders for your mental health. Even 24 hours is enough time to come back refreshed. And ultimately, our kids benefit too. “Women who have close friendships and communities become more empathic, supportive and well-adjusted parents,” adds Costello.

Here are some tips for planning a (realistic) weekend getaway of your own.

Start with a date. This is actually the hardest part of getting away: finding a weekend that you and your friends have free. The catch is you also have to make sure the other parents or moms or grandparents or whoever are also free. This is very important, because kids are not allowed on this trip. Get to group texting, and set that date!

Scout a location. And don’t feel like you have to go far. We chose Palm Springs because it’s close to Los Angeles, where we live, and it’s a great place for a relaxing weekend. We basically just needed beds and a pool. Airbnb is great for finding a getaway house, or you could get fancy and book a hotel or resort. A house is nice for friends because it includes common areas and a kitchen and (if you spring for it) a private pool.

If spending money on a venue is not an option, you can always use one of your own homes. Once I invited friends to stay the night at my house, and my husband took the kids to visit their grandparents. My friends and I simply ordered Thai food and sat around talking in pajamas. A good old-fashioned sleepover did the trick, and it cost zero dollars. (Well, except for the wine and phat si-io)

More: My ex and I vacation together to make our kids happy

Pack up and head out. It’s fun to ride together — it starts the party off early. And everyone’s excited at the beginning of the trip. Pack some comfy clothes and maybe a going-out outfit if that’s on your agenda. Most important — pajamas for all the sleeping you’ll do. And for our group, swimsuits and magazines were key because of the aforementioned pool lounging.

Procure provisions. Make sure to pack or buy plenty of (adult) snacks. No Goldfish crackers allowed. Alana brought a nice cheese and cracker spread to get us started. As soon as we settled in, we headed to the local grocery to stock up on food, libations and pool floaties. We grabbed lunch and, most important, rum. I kept a pitcher of frozen piña coladas on hand and brought fun, colorful cups for everyone. We didn’t have to stuff leftover mac 'n’ cheese into our faces or hand over whatever snack we happened to be eating. That right there made the trip worth all the effort.

Enjoy! We kept the weekend open so we could simply unwind, which turned out to be a great plan. Aside from dinner at a Mexican restaurant Saturday night, we just sat around, talked and swam. We went to bed by midnight and in the morning, there were no children waking us up. It was only slightly sad not to open my eyes to a tiara-clad 3-year-old begging for waffles. I’ve been sleep-trained by my babies to wake up early at this point, so I ran out to get doughnuts and breakfast sandwiches, but still. Just having the option to sleep in was nice. We left Palm Springs ready to face another week of mom life, and it was lovely to see our little ones’ faces on Sunday afternoon.

As much as we love being with our kids, it’s both decadent and healthy to put the caregiving aside for a bit and relax with your friends. It doesn’t need to cost a lot, and the rejuvenation you’ll feel is priceless.

3 Important Tips for Going to a Sex Shop for the First Time

$

Going into a sex shop for the first time can be intimidating no matter how old you are or what you’re looking for. Thoughts can vary from feeling uneducated or naive for not knowing your way around the store to a fear of being judged for going in at all. Although there are a lot of online alternatives for those who aren’t willing to go in person (think Jack and Jill), there are many benefits to going into an actual store.

But if you’re feeling anxious about choosing brick-and-mortar, here are some simple solutions for any pre-visit anxiety.

1. Bring a friend with you

It might sound weird, but bringing a friend you can trust with you on your first visit can not only make you feel better about being there, but it can remind you that the experience can also be fun.

Keep in mind that any sex shop is an actual business, and you don’t want to make fun of things that other people might like, but if you need to laugh your way through some of your unease with your friends, that’s acceptable too. It might also benefit you to find a friend who has some experience in shopping in adult stores, so if you find you have a question you are not comfortable asking an employee, you can defer to them.

2. Have an idea of what you’re looking for before you go in

Most sex shops have a lot to choose from, from the basic selections of safer sex supplies and vibrators to more advanced toys, costumes and literature. Even if you don’t intend to purchase anything and just want to check the store out, having an idea of what you want to see can save you some confusion and prevent you from feeling too overwhelmed.

If it’s your first time buying anything from an adult store, starting simpler is usually safer. Find something that you’re already familiar with or have already researched and work your way up so if you do need advice, you can work from a basis of knowledge.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions

The employees are there to help you. There is no question that will embarrass them or make them think less of you, because even if it is your first time there, it’s not theirs. The employees are used to answering questions, and keep in mind that if you don’t ask questions, you risk ending up with a product that isn't what you’re looking for or even something you’re not sure how to use.

If you find you just can’t work up the nerve to ask your questions directly, some shops have FAQ pamphlets that can help ease you into the process.

Regardless of your comfort level, just know that most sex stores work to create a nonjudgmental and welcoming environment for all of their customers and that no one will look at you differently for being there or for asking for help.

Princess Diana and Her Former Lover Were Surprisingly Domestic

Princess Diana's former lover — and Prince Harry's longtime rumored father — is about as reclusive as a person can get. James Hewitt stays far out of the spotlight, living in the countryside of Devon with his widowed mother. But in a new interview with the Australian TV show Sunday Night, he opened up about some of the details about his long affair with Di that began after he became her horseback-riding instructor in 1986.

"It’s a gradual period and then, you know, suddenly you can’t get enough of each other or see each other as much as you want," he told the show about how his relationship with Diana turned from professional to romantic. The pair began their affair as Diana's marriage to Prince Charles was falling apart.

As they continued their five-year tryst, Hewitt and Diana would secretly escape to the farm in Devon where Hewitt now lives, where they settled into a surprisingly domestic routine.

"I’d cook, and [Diana] would wash up. Just dinner and relaxing and laughing," Hewitt explained.

More: Sorry, Prince Harry’s Future Wives Fans: Your Lives Are Officially Over

On the show, Hewitt also briefly addressed the longstanding rumors that he's Prince Harry's real father, something he's always denied.

"No, I’m not," he said firmly on the show, adding that the rumors likely make things "worse for [Harry], probably, poor chap."

Hewitt, who has never married or had children, speculated that the rumor about him and Harry won't die because "it sells papers." He's likely telling the truth, though — Diana's former butler has said before that she and Hewitt didn't even meet until Harry was a toddler.

Angelina Jolie Got a Huge, Painful Tattoo 'Binding' Her to Brad Pitt

There's a pretty simple, cardinal rule when it comes to tattoos: You don't ever get one to signify a relationship. At worst, some say it's a curse that dooms the relationship to end. At best, it's a really bad idea to have something permanently affixed to your skin that signifies something that could end painfully and bitterly, you know, like relationships tend to do.

Angelina Jolie has now broken that rule twice.

First, she famously had "Billy Bob" tattooed on her arm during her marriage to Billy Bob Thornton. After their divorce, she had that lasered off and replaced with the GPS coordinates of the birthplaces of her six children and Pitt.

Now, new images have started making the rounds online showing Jolie getting some new ink just months before she suddenly filed for divorce from Pitt. According to Yahoo Entertainment, Jolie and Pitt got tattooed together at the time with the same ink and "matching" patterns, something that was supposed to "symbolically bind them as husband and wife." Womp, womp.

The couple got their tattoos in Cambodia from ex-Thai Monk Ajarn Noo Kanpai, who tattooed them in a painful, traditional method using a long, single, handheld needle. Jolie got sacred Buddhist markings on her upper back, while Pitt reportedly got Buddhist symbols on his stomach.

Reportedly, they had their session in February last year while they were in Cambodia for Jolie to film First They Killed My Father. She would file for divorce just seven months later.

If you're a devoted member of the Beyhive, there’s a Beyoncé and Jay Z-themed restaurant that may just be worth a pilgrimage. The new bar and restaurant, called The Carter, is located in Sydney, Australia, and while it focuses heavily on Mr. and Mrs. Carter, you’ll also see some tributes to other famous or controversial figures on the music scene.

Leave Chrissy Teigen — and the rest of us moms — alone, already

In today's coverage of Jesus Christ on a cracker, there are some horrible humans on this planet:

We talk a lot about mansplainers and manspreaders, but you know who else is the worst? Momsplainers. The moms who feel that it's their right — nay, their responsibility — to correct the behavior of any moms they happen upon. And thanks to social media, celebrity moms can't get away from these people.

Chrissy Teigen seems to be dealing with this daily now. She has had it up to here, and we understand completely. Teigen is regularly the target for internet trolls who can't deal with her outspoken approach to life — and motherhood. Teigen recently wrote a moving essay for April's issue of Glamour magazine about her battle with postpartum depression after the arrival of now-10-month-old daughter, Luna. You'd think that that fact alone (hey! raging depression and constant weeping!) would mean people would let up on her already, fer Chrissakes. But no.

So Chrissy is once again calling out the critics and shamers, with a screenshot of some of the crappiest comments directed at her and her family recently:

And then a follow-up tweet (we can just feel her trying to limit her furious follow-up tweets to one):

CT momsplainer part 2

We have all been on the receiving end of unsolicited opinions and snarky judgmental comments as mothers. The funny thing? A lot of the talkback came from other moms. Why is this a phenomenon? It takes a village, you guys, and not a bitchy one:

"You're still breastfeeding?"

"Oh, you're not with the father anymore? Wow."

"How did you guys get pregnant if you're lesbians?"

"You didn't even try to nurse past a month? Wow."

"I would never have a home birth."

"A C-section? I'm so glad I had a natural birth experience."

"Your baby looks cold/hot/tired/sick."

"Oh, you're a single mom. I could never do that, myself."

Go on, add to the list of comments. You know you've heard a bunch of them, and each time, the words of awful momsplainers have either pissed you off or made you feel, well, small. It's nasty, sneaky, passive-aggressive mom-ninja shit, and we are done.

Moms, go easy on other moms. Remember that we're all trying our best. And we've got enough to deal with, already.

Does My Dog Really Need Supplements?

$
0
0

Many people take supplements themselves, such as vitamins, minerals and nutraceuticals (pharmaceutical-grade nutrients), so as veterinarians, we often get asked whether pets need them too. The answer is a bit complicated and ends up being a “sometimes yes and sometimes no” kind of thing.

While you might take a supplement yourself and swear that there is a perceived improvement in your own health, for many reasons there is often scant scientific evidence that supplements have any real effect on wellness. Most of these substances cannot be patented because they aren’t synthesized in a lab or manufacturing process, so there is little in the way of monetary gain to make costly and lengthy research worthwhile. And the lack of any kind of formal and government-enforced quality monitoring procedures makes it difficult to feel confident that you’re even getting what you think you are when you buy these products.

Read on to learn which supplements may be helpful, which ones can’t hurt and which ones may in fact be harmful for your dog.

Omega-3 fatty acids

We have more solid scientific evidence about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids than virtually any other nutritional supplement. Specifically, polyunsaturated fats such as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are felt to be beneficial as a treatment for the itchiness associated with allergic skin disease. They may also help reduce inflammation associated with arthritis in diseases like hip dysplasia. Recent evidence even suggests that they may slow the rate of dysfunction associated with chronic kidney disease.

Dogs can take fish oil capsules directly by mouth. Always choose a brand formulated for dogs. Some dogs prefer to have the oil put on their food, and there are products that can be pumped directly onto the food, as well as capsules designed to have the ends snipped so that the contents can be squeezed onto the food. There are also dog foods, specifically targeted for use in arthritic dogs that have high doses of omega-3 fats. If you choose to feed your dog one of these diets, ask your veterinarian about using a prescription diet or make sure that the brand you buy contains appropriate preservatives in order to increase the shelf life of these somewhat volatile oils.

A word of caution: High levels of omega-3 fatty acids may cause platelet problems, which can contribute to prolonged bleeding times after injuries or surgical procedures, so always let your veterinarian know that your dog is taking an omega-3 supplement.

More: Do you need to worry about BPA levels in your dog?

Joint supplements

Joint supplements disguised as tasty treats for dogs have been on the market for many years. Most of them contain glucosamine and chondroitin, and some also contain MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) and green lip mussel extract. There are many proprietary formulations of some or all of these ingredients.

The evidence that these supplements improve joint health is less convincing than for the benefits omega-3 fats to allergic dogs; however, many pet parents do feel that they see improvement with them. It’s believed that these ingredients contain the components necessary to build cartilage, so in diseases that involve cartilage destruction, such as osteoarthritis, they may provide some benefit. These products seem to be most helpful when started early in the disease process, so don’t expect much in the way of improvement if your dog is already painful when you start these.

Multivitamins

As long as your dog is eating a high-quality commercial canine diet, he should not need to take a vitamin and mineral supplement. Canine diets are formulated to meet the dog’s daily requirements of those substances.

If your veterinarian has helped you develop a home-cooked diet for your dog or you’ve used the excellent veterinary nutritionists at BalanceIT to do so, you will likely need to add a multivitamin to his daily regimen. Most dependable home-cooked recipes contain recommendations as to which multivitamins are appropriate and how much to give daily.

More: 15 Toxic Foods Every Dog Owner Should Know

Silymarin

Silymarin is also known as milk thistle. There is quite a bit of evidence, both in human and veterinary medicine, that it aids in the clearance of toxins in the liver. In Europe, dogs that have ingested poisonous mushrooms are routinely given the injectable form of this substance in order to correct the liver damage that occurs, but this form of silymarin is not available in the U.S.

We don’t have any reliable studies to suggest that dogs with normal liver function benefit from silymarin; however, it seems to be safe, and it’s likely that using it in a healthy dog would not be problematic. It’s believed that silymarin changes the metabolism of other drugs, so it’s best to consult with your veterinarian before starting to give it to your dog.

Fiber

Fiber supplements can be beneficial in dogs that have chronic diarrhea or chronic constipation. Psyllium husks can help to normalize the stool, both in the cases of routine diarrhea and with dogs that have problems defecating due to constipation. Psyllium husks are safe to use and can be given at a rate of one teaspoon per day for small dogs and one tablespoon per day for big dogs. Metamucil is mostly psyllium, so it can be used, but read the ingredient list carefully, as many varieties contain sugar, and it’s best to avoid excess dietary sugar, if possible.

5-HTP

Many people use 5-hydroxytryptophan to treat depression, chronic headaches and insomnia. It may even have some mood-altering benefits in dogs. However, in the doses that are routinely put into one capsule for a human, this substance can be deadly to our canine friends.

In large quantities, 5-HTP can trigger a condition known as serotonin syndrome. Because 5-HTP is readily absorbed in the GI tract, dogs can experience fatal neurologic and GI problems related to ingestion of it. If you use 5-HTP yourself, be hyperaware of how and where you store your supply, and make sure it’s well out of reach of your dog.

Calcium supplements

Commercially prepared dog foods are appropriately balanced for calcium and phosphorus, the two minerals that are essential for healthy bone growth and production in the body. While these minerals are of the utmost importance to puppies, they are important during the dog’s entire life because bone is continually being broken down and produced.

Giving oral calcium supplements to a healthy dog, in addition to the calcium that is consumed in the diet, puts the dog at risk for developing calcium deposits in the body. The most likely place for calcium to gather is in the urinary tract, and calcium supplementation can predispose a dog to the development of kidney and bladder stones.

If you’re making a home-cooked diet for your dog, using the right amount of calcium is critical to preventing the buildup of calcium excess in the body. Using a recipe developed by veterinary nutritionists will ensure that the diet is properly balanced.

Daylight Saving Time: Because Being a Parent Isn't Hard Enough

$
0
0

Here's my advice for today. Avoid that chipper parent who gleefully declares, "For some reason my kids easily adjusted to daylight saving!" You don't have time for that lady, because for many of us with kids, daylight saving time is one more parenting stress.

According to the Better Sleep Council, half of all American parents say daylight saving time affects their kids; more than 29 percent report it’s more difficult to get children to sleep after the time change. That's because if you're trying to put them to sleep at their normal bedtime, it feels one hour earlier to them because it is one hour earlier.

My 10-year-old was in tears last night because she had spent more than an hour trying to fall asleep. She was so frustrated and anxious about being tired the next day. And of course the next morning, I practically needed a forklift to get my kids out of their beds. How could it be morning? we all wondered. It was still so dark.

More: 21 Tips to Get Your Best Sleep Ever

So what do you do about daylight saving time (other than gripe about it on social media) if you have children?

Take it slow. Don't expect your kids to adjust overnight. It might be helpful to switch them over in 15 minute increments.

Stick to that bedtime routine. Whatever it is. Bath, books, bed, bourbon? (OK, no bourbon.) Those nightly rituals are the signals that remind children it's time for bed even if they feel like doing cartwheels and headstands.

For older kids, try meditation or letting them read before bed. Almost every night, my 12-year-old goes to sleep listening to a meditation on Headspace. She's a night owl, so it really helps settle her down and fall asleep on school nights.

Avoid big meals two or three hours before bed since it can interfere with sleep. And don't give kids a lot of sugar before bed.

As bad as this adjustment is, I have found that "springing forward" is generally easier than "falling back" because in the fall, your children will wake up one hour earlier. And nobody needs that craziness.

When my son was 2, he was already an early riser, but because of daylight saving time, he began waking up at 5:30 a.m. Not for a few days or weeks, but for two months straight. And it made no difference how late I put him to bed. I'm pretty sure if I tucked him in at 5:29 a.m. after getting 60 seconds of sleep, he'd be like, "Hey mom, big good morning to you!"

But let's not worry about all that now.

More: 7 Tips for New Moms to Get Some Sleep

Just take heart. Your children will eventually adjust to DST. Try not to obsess over it (too much). New parents have a tendency to discuss daylight saving with the intensity of trying to figure out how to achieve world peace.

I promise. Your kid will eventually get back on his or her schedule. And eventually you'll enjoy the extra light at the end of the day. Just remember to change the clocks so you aren't late for school.

An Up-to-Date List of the Best and Worst Foods for Pesticides

$

The next time you shop the produce aisle, you might want to beeline straight for the organic section — especially if strawberries, spinach, nectarines or apples are on your list. As it turns out, they're some of the most pesticide-heavy fruits and veggies according to the Environmental Working Group. The EWG just released its 2017 list of the most and least pesticide-ridden foods, aka “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean Fifteen.” Here's what you need to know.

To compile the ranking, the EWG analyzed tests by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration of more than 48 different types of produce. This year, the Dirty Dozen list includes, in order, strawberries, spinach, nectarines, apples, peaches, celery, grapes, pears, cherries, tomatoes, sweet bell peppers and potatoes.

Each of these foods tested positive for a number of different pesticide residues and contained higher concentrations of pesticides than other produce. Spinach made a huge leap from eighth to second place, while pears and potatoes were new additions to the Dirty Dozen, displacing cherry tomatoes and cucumbers from last year's list.

More: 20 Root Veggie Recipes to Try Before They're Out of Season

If all of this has you wondering what in the heck you can eat that’s not covered in chemicals with words you can’t even pronounce, the EWG also came up with the Clean Fifteen, which outlines the produce with the fewest pesticides detected. Those 15 are sweet corn, avocados, pineapples, cabbage, onions, frozen sweet peas, papayas, asparagus, mangoes, eggplant, honeydew melon, kiwis, cantaloupe, cauliflower and grapefruit.

But before you start throwing out any fruits or veggies that aren't on the Clean Fifteen, remember that this list does not mean you are going to keel over and die just because you grabbed the cheaper, non-organic strawberries the last time you were at the store.

Eating fruits and veggies (even non-organic) is still a better choice than processed crap like potato chips and sugar-laden cereals, so use this list as a guide, rather than something to live and die by. Heck, even the EWG believes we need to keep things in perspective, saying: “The health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure.” Still, better to know which ones might need a more thorough wash!

Carnie Wilson Talks About Her Postpartum Psychosis in When The Bough Breaks

Postpartum depression is terrifying enough with the run-of-the-mill symptoms: depression, anxiety, insomnia, crying jags.

But Carnie Wilson's postpartum depression took an extra-horrific turn — with hallucinations and uncontrollable psychotic thoughts — immediately after the C-section birth of her first daughter, Lola Sofia, 11. The mother of two spoke frankly about her experience in the new documentary When the Bough Breaks.

More: Dad's letter to all moms suffering from PPD

Amazingly, Wilson was able to keep her cool, despite the nightmarish auditory hallucinations. "I thought, ‘OK, that’s a psychotic thought,’” she said. “That’s not me — something else in there is saying that. And I didn’t have any urge to hurt the baby, but it was just a horrible thought. I just wanted it to go away really badly.”

This is a facet of postpartum depression that is rarely discussed, so kudos to Wilson for sharing her experience publicly in the feature-length documentary. The film's executive producer and narrator is Brooke Shields, and includes the experiences of other celebrities who have dealt with postpartum psychosis as well as depression: Aarti Sequeira, Tanya Newbould, and The Real Housewives of Orange County's Peggy Tanous.

The demonic hallucinations eventually let up, but raging anxiety took their place for Wilson. “I swear to God, I don’t think I was ever more scared or more freaked out than coming home from the hospital... I didn’t know what to expect. That’s the thing that’s scary about having your first child — you don’t know what you’re gonna get,” said Wilson.

“You don’t know how you’re gonna feel. You know you’re gonna be excited and elated and you’re gonna feel love, but there’s a lot of surprises. A lot of things that nobody can prepare you for.”

More: Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett is done with PPD, thanks

With a snuggly newborn in your lap, it seems like the surprises should all be happy ones, damn it. Postpartum hormones, you are ruiners. Total party-pooper ruiners.

Anyway, we can't wait to see When the Bough Breaks (available on iTunes March 14). Too many of us have struggled with PPD in a private hell. The more celebrities who can use their spot in the public eye to smash the stigma that comes with PPD, the better.

Beyoncé's Earrings May Actually Be Her Gender Reveal Announcement

Beyoncé may have flaunted her baby belly at the 2017 Grammys, but now that the performance is down in musical history, she's back to keeping her pregnancy private.

But just because it's private doesn't mean she isn't sharing some intimate details about the twins she's carrying.

In a series of images of Beyoncé released today on her website, fans were quick to point out she was rocking the same pair of earrings she wore in her music video for the song, "If I Were A Boy," leading many to believe the photos were a subtle way to announce that she and Jay Z are expecting twin boys.

This may seem far-fetched — except BuzzFeed was smart enough to point out that Beyoncé is a huge fan of the subtle clues.

For example, here are some of her Instagram pics leading up to the Lemonade reveal...

You get the point. Basically, the odds are pretty good that these earrings serve a bigger purpose than simply going well with Beyoncé's outfit.

Do you think Beyoncé's earrings are a subtle clue her twins are boys?

Will Nick Viall choose Raven or Vanessa on tonight's season finale of The Bachelor?

Who cares! (No, really, I care, but this news is also pretty juicy.)

Warning: Spoilers about The Bachelor's live special After the Final rose below. Don't continue reading unless you want to know the dirty deets about what the show has in store.

More: Seriously, Hold My Wine — ABC Has Cast Its First Black Bachelorette

The Bachelor has been touting a historic After the Final Rose special where something will happen that has never happened before. Considering that people have fought, broken up, cried, met the in-laws and set wedding dates all in one special, there isn't much that hasn't happened on After the Final Rose.

So what's the big twists tonight?

Well, the show is ready for Nick to swoop out the door an engaged man and usher in new Bachelorette Rachel Lindsey in all her glory.

Tonight, not only will we get to see Rachel once again, but we'll also get to meet some of her men, according to Us Weekly.

Now, rumor has it, Nick and his final lady are already off to a rocky start. What would happen if Nick decided to join Rachel's season? I mean, come on! That would just be fabulously ridiculous.

Fifth times the charm, Nick?

That's totally just my wishful thinking over here.

More than likely, Rachel's going to get a whole new crop of hunky men ready to steal her heart. Nick who?

Plus, the fact that Rachel is the show's first black Bachelorette means ABC is getting so much publicity right now that of course they had to find some way to incorporate Rachel in the After the Final Rose special in a big way. This will definitely get people buzzing.

"And here's Bachelor Number 2, Will Williams, who is 32 years old and a lawyer from that big bustling city. Will is a natural competitor. When he's not winning cases, he's drinking a fine wine from his personal cellar or playing football shirtless on the beach."

Blake Shelton's Steal on The Voice Was Not Cheating

Badmouth Blake Shelton's bromance and his preference for country artists all you want — there's clearly a reason he wins The Voice season after season, and it's not luck.

Shelton is a master tactician. He knows exactly what types of teams to put together, who has the most potential for growth and how to make the audience connect with contestants they might otherwise ignore.

More: Alicia Keys Has the Key to Winning Over Contestants on The Voice

Sundance Head is the perfect example of Shelton's genius. Obviously, Head was amazingly talented all along, but it took Shelton to make America see that. We all thought Billy Gilman had Season 11 locked down, but Shelton and Head proved that celebrity only goes so far in a singing competition.

More: David Cassidy's Nephew Has a Promising Future on The Voice

This season, Shelton is back at it. He's not quite satisfied with his huge stash of trophies; he'll do whatever it takes to earn more hardware, even if it means annoying his significant other! He demonstrated his commitment to victory this evening, using an audition tactic that the other judges universally decried.

Enid Ortiz
Image: NBC

The clever trick occurred right at the end of Enid Ortiz's remarkable audition. Although not necessarily the most impressive competitor of the night, she certainly deserved a chance on the show. Yet, by the time the end of her song arrived, not one chair had turned.

More: Sundance Head Says His Bond With Blake Shelton Helped Him Win The Voice

All of a sudden, Shelton's chair began to revolve, leaving the other judges' jaws dropped. Gwen Stefani pointed at the love of her life and accused him of being a cheater. Adam Levine joined in, claiming, "That was the dirtiest thing I've ever seen."

Okay, okay, Shelton's move was unorthodox. And sure, it was a bit unfair to make poor Ortiz think that she was out of luck. But the rules certainly don't state that judges must turn around the moment they decide they want a particular artist on their team.

Enid Ortiz

If the other judges had really wanted to work with Ortiz, they would have bothered to turn their chairs, rather than wait for somebody else to lead the charge. Kudos to Shelton for his ingenuity — we can't wait to see Ortiz blossom as a member of Team Blake!

6 Musicians Who Made Guest Cameos on Game of Thrones Before Ed Sheeran

This weekend at South by Southwest, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss announced that shaggy pop star Ed Sheeran will be making a cameo during Season 7, which premieres this summer on HBO.

The producers explained that actress Maisie Williams (who plays the badass ninja-like Arya Stark) loves the pop singer and that the spot was for her: “For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it,” Benioff said.

While the "Shape of You" singer seems like an odd addition to the world of Westeros, it is far from the first time that the smash hit George R.R. Martin saga welcomed famous musicians onto the set. Let's take a look back on some of the musically talented cameos that we've seen on GOT so far.

Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol

The lead singer and alt rock band Snow Patrol had a tiny moment in the GOT spotlight during Season 3, Episode 3, as one of Roose Bolton's men trotting through the forest. Does this mean that Lightbody is a bad guy? Yep, it seems that way.

Don't blink or you might miss it: He's the guy behind the guy in the front on the white horse and the one who leads the men in a chorus of "The Bear and the Maiden Fair."

Will Champion of Coldplay

Coldplay's drummer Will Champion does what de does best in his Game of Throne's cameo: you can see him playing percussion in a wedding band during Season 3, Episode 9, "The Rains of Castamere." The episode, which is named after the song Champion is performing, is one of the most notorious in television history, and you might remember watching it with your hand plastered over your mouth, in utter disgust and terror. Known to many simply as the Red Wedding, the scene where Champion is playing away is also the scene where the Frey family massacre their enemies–including fan favorites Rob and Catelyn Stark–at a wedding meant to unite the clans.

Wilko Johnson of Dr. Feelgood

Wilko Johnson Game of Thrones

Dr. Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson landed an entire character in the series despite not having any history as an actor. He played the terrifying Ser Illyn Payne, the character loyal to the Lannisters and known best for beheading Ned Stark (which is a Season 1 spoiler, but if you haven't watched Season 1 yet, that's kind of your fault).

After appearing in the first two seasons, Johnson had to drop out of the show due to a cancer diagnosis. But it's now been a few years down the line and he is recovering after treatment. He has noted in interviews that he'd love to reprise his role, especially since his character is one of the few people in King's Landing at this point who is still alive.

Sigur Rós

It isn't too surprising that Icelandic indie rock band Sigur Ros, since Iceland has been a regular filming location for the show since its first season. The three-person band appears in "The Lion and the Rose" from Season 4, performing at the wedding of Margaery Tyrell and Joffrey Lannister. This celebration doesn't go any better than the Red Wedding, with Joffrey getting poisoned after the ceremony, though the musical entertainment is nice.

During his South by Southwest talk, Dan Weiss noted that Jónsi Birgisson, the lead singer of Sigur Ros, thought that he could leave the set after his close-up and was surprised that he had to stick around for several more days as a background actor while the entire wedding was shot. “He was a super good sport about it,” Weiss said.

Mastodon

The members of metal band Mastadon were perfect for extras in a grand scene featuring a hoard of white walkers and a hoard of Wildlings.

Brann Dailor told Pitchfork: "It was such an incredible experience to be on set as extras for our collective favorite show Game Of Thrones and to be wildlings murdered and then brought back to life by White Walkers was beyond amazing. I watched my best friends Brent and Bill, murdered right in front of me as I myself was stabbed in the stomach and had my throat slit multiple times, and I didn't mind at all. It made me love being in Mastodon even more. We are more than privileged and honored to have been a part of one of the greatest stories ever told on film, and the catering wasn't bad either."

Gillian Anderson Is Ready to Introduce You to Your 'Inner Girl'

Gillian Anderson is one of those feminist badasses, who is using her fame as an actress to catapult a larger discussion about equality.

More: The X-Files: Gillian Anderson reveals 7 facts about the upcoming episodes

Newsflash: Just because you're a world-famous actress doesn't mean happiness come easily.

But she has long used her career as an actress to play women who are worth more, and she's brilliant at owning her screen time, even if she's being paid less. (She notoriously admitted she was offered half the pay of David Duchovny to star alongside him in X-Files.) Just try watching her in The Fall — one of my personal television obsessions — and not rooting for her character and women as a whole. The subtlety, sexuality and intelligence she brings to the part is magnanimous. I actually keep a document of quotes from the show because they're that fabulous for when I need some girl power inspiration.

That being said, if Anderson's book is anything like the women she plays on television, I am so in.

In her just-released book We: A Manifesto for Women Everywhere, Anderson and her co-writer Jennifer Nadel lay out nine principles like honesty, trust, peace, joy and humility to inspire women to have a different conversation in order to continuing spurring change.

Anderson shared some of the personal struggles she discusses in the book during an interview with Elle. Though even Anderson admits she doesn't have it all figured out, she said she has learned through her struggles and hopes to help guide women on their own path.

More: The X-Files Spoilers: Could Love Still Be in the Air for Scully and Mulder?

"At the beginning, the publishers kept encouraging us to do that," Anderson said of the intimate details she exposes in the book. "My first response was, 'Perhaps it's too personal,' and 'Are you sure,' and 'How do we do that if it's ultimately about 'we'?' Eventually they convinced us, or maybe it just was me that needed to be convinced, that it really helped the reader to identify and to step deeper into the book. I just had to make the decision that there was something in the exposing of it — that if by being honest, people had a different level of identification and it had a positive impact on their life, then I was willing to take that risk."

And take the risk she did, including her inner struggle finding joy despite her status as a Hollywood A-lister.

"It's funny, because one of the things I struggle with the most is joy. And yet it's also when I take the steps to do things like meditate on a regular basis or acknowledge that there is nature around me, the sun is shining, there are birds — those are things that do connect me with a sense of joy. Even though I know it works and I know that it calms me, and I know it can completely shift my perspective on things and therefore impact how I am impacting other people and events, it's one of the hardest things for me to remember."

11 Foods to Dye Green For a Festive St. Patrick's

$

St. Patrick's Day is almost here, and you know what that means: Green everything — even food. Just be sure to do your research when you're getting down to business in the kitchen — you can't use traditional liquid food coloring on every dish, and there may be a special method (like cooking in the dye) for some foods. That said, we've got some ideas on stuff that's super-easy to turn green.

1. Ice cream and ice cream drinks

boozy shamrock shake

You don't have to have mint-chocolate chip ice cream for it to be green. Mix it up Marble Slab-style by adding green food coloring to vanilla ice cream, mixing it up and putting it on top of that pistachio bread, or add it to your favorite shake. We like this boozy shamrock shake.

2. White sauces

green spinach mac and cheese

Regardless of the type, any white or pale sauce can be made green using either food coloring or natural colorants like spinach or kale. We're eager to try this green macaroni and cheese, which uses spinach to make it green (gotta love recipes that let you sneak in some healthy stuff).

3. Cakes

green pistachio bread
Image: Kitchen Blessings

You could probably use five to 10 drops of food coloring in banana or zucchini bread too, but we like this easy recipe for sweet pistachio bread.

4. Frosting and icing

Everyone knows you can dye frosting, but we're including it here for a recommendation from McCormick. They suggest adding 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract to frosting along with the green food coloring. We think these adorable St. Patrick's Day mini doughnuts are a great recipe to experiment with.

5. Deviled eggs

green deviled eggs
Image: So Wonderful, So Marvelous

A little food coloring in the yolk mixture of your favorite deviled egg recipe before filling them, and you've got a fun recipe for a St. Patrick's Day appetizer. We like these green deviled eggs featuring tarragon.

6. Waffles or pancakes

green pancakes
Image: Brandy O'Neill/SheKnows

Waffles and pancakes are easy to dye thanks to their light color and the fact that you can easily judge the color they'll be when cooked (same as when the batter is raw). But we really love these green velvet pancakes with whipped cream and chocolate sauce.

7. Cheesecake

green mint cheesecake
Image: Pip & Ebby

Just drop in a little food coloring while you're whipping up your favorite cheesecake recipe, or try this mint-chocolate chip cheesecake.

8. Breads

green bagels with chive cream cheese
Image: Brandy O'Neill/SheKnows

You can also add food coloring to almost any bread recipe to make it green. These homemade green bagels with chive cream cheese sound good.

9. Popcorn

Green popcorn

You can also dye popcorn green, and while the powdered dyes will work best for plain popcorn, we think you should try this green candied popcorn.

10. Mashed potatoes

green spinach mashed potatoes
Image: Shockingly Delicious

Mashed potatoes can easily be dyed using green food coloring, but this recipe for green mashed potatoes featuring kale pesto is also a good way to sneak some healthy greens into your family's diet under the guise of St. Patrick's Day revelry.

11. Rice Krispies Treats

They're easy to dye because all you have to do is add food coloring to the sugar mixture. How about trying these awesome ombré Rice Krispies Treats?

Gut Reactions to Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay's Men

Chris Harrison pulled one over on all of us tonight by starting Rachel's season of The Bachelorette earlier than any of us expected.

As in right there, live, on After the Final Rose.

And it was awesome.

More: Seriously, Hold My Wine — ABC Has Cast Its First Black Bachelorette

Rachel has said already that she doesn't have a type as far as looks go so we figured what better way to judge the men we got to see first by studying Rachel's connection with each as they came on stage.

1. Demario

Hot. And smooth. He booked flights to Vegas so he and Rachel could elope! He even brought a ring. Rachel seemed taken with him as is the rest of America, clearly. Great start to this season of eligible bachelors.

2. Blake

He seemed super nervous, which came across as awkward. He told Rachel she smelled good and she didn't seem to know how to handle it. They ended up awkward side-hugging before real hugging before he made his much-needed exit. Hey, live introductions are hard.

More: All of The Bachelor's Corinne's Stupendous, Quotable One-Liners

3. Dean

When I saw Dean walking up, I let out an unplanned, "Oooo." Then he told Rachel he was going to go black and never go back and hearts melted. A cutie with a sense of humor who knows how to wear a suit! And Rachel seemed charmed. She couldn't stop laughing.

4. Eric

Eric has a great smile but he immediately brought the cheese out on stage, which had me second-guessing him for a moment. But Rachel actually seemed into it so, hey, Eric, you get your cheese on.

Aaand... wow, those men have some serious potential.

I can't decide if I support this too-soon introduction or not. On the one hand, it was a great way to wet the palette for what is sure to be one of the best seasons in the history of The Bachelor or Bachelorette. On the other hand, doesn't it give these four guys an unfair advantage? They're definitely going to be more memorable than the guys who meet Rachel the traditional way.

I think I agree with Rachel on this when she told Chris Harrison her feelings about meeting some of her men live on After the Final Rose, "If I can keep meeting men like that, yes."

I seriously don't know how I'm going to wait until May for Rachel's season. It's going to be too good.

Surprise: Makeup Wipes Are Actually Really Bad For Your Skin

$
0
0

As a beauty editor, and as a rational human being, I literally, yes literally, die inside each time someone says to me, “Of course I wash my face—well, OK, I use makeup wipes, but it’s the same thing.” Oh my god. Guys, I cannot explain to you how wrong this is, and how much I hate makeup wipes. And because a good majority of you reading this just got defensive, clutching your wipes to your chest like a wounded animal, I’m going to patiently explain, once and for all, why you should never, ever, ever use makeup wipes, ever again.

MORE: Meet Retinol Oil: The Coolest Anti-Aging Product That Actually Works

OK, well, never again, unless you use them for fun things, like removing makeup from your hands, or fixing liquid liner gone wrong. Or, if you promise to be extra gentle and super careful on your face, and only use them sparingly (that’s my disclaimer to sound nicer, but I will deny this allowance if you ever run into me on the street, because makeup wipes suck). “Yes, makeup wipes are better than nothing,” says badass Yale dermatologist Mona Gohara, queen of #realtalk, “but they’re basically the equivalent of swirling dirty toilet water around your bathroom, so it’s up to you if you really want that.” Uh, burn.

Makeup wipes are bad for skin
Image: ImaxTree

“Very few makeup wipes contain ingredients that can actually break down all of your face oils, makeup, and gunk on your skin, so you’re really just rubbing bacteria, irritants, and makeup-wipe residue around your skin and into your pores,” she says. And, notes Gohara, if you do the extra-awful and lazy move of not rinsing your face afterward, you’re then transferring that gunk to your pillow, which then gets transferred back to your skin, and on and on the cycle goes, leading to breakouts, blackheads, irritation, and, oh, did I mention wrinkles? Yup!

“Makeup wipes are inherently harsh on your skin, because the amount of pressure required to remove your makeup—especially mascara and eyeliner—is already way too irritating,” says Gohara. “And over time, that irritation and rubbing, even if it’s just once a day, can cause an increase in fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.” Basically, makeup wipes suck and will make you look like the Crypt Keeper by age 35. Cool, right?

Makeup wipes are bad
Image: ImaxTree

But if none of this has persuaded you to ditch your wipes in favor of something gentle (seriously, though?), like a cleansing oil or micellar water, then at least promise to use wipes that have the most intense makeup-removing powers, like Tarte Fresh Eyes Waterproof Makeup Remover Wipes, and hold them against your eyes and face for 15 full seconds (like you would when removing nail polish), before wiping away your makeup. Then, for the love of god, wash your damn face, specifically with a cleanser meant to remove makeup, like Garnier Clean + Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser, or you’ll still be left with raccoon eyes in the morning.

And, please, never again text me about how despite being “so drunk last night,” you still “took off [your] makeup with wipes.” (Yes, I’m talking to you, Liz.) There’s only so much left of me that can keep dying.
