Jeffrey Tambor on Uniting America and That Meryl Streep Speech

$

Jeffrey Tambor has plenty to be happy about right now. The fourth season of his hit Amazon show, Transparent, is on the horizon, he's starring in a new Super Bowl ad and he's been a fixture this awards season, so he's been party to some truly amazing acceptance speeches. For Tambor, life is coming up roses, and when he sat down to talk with SheKnows, we learned that even though the state of affairs may be a bit more uncertain that we're used to, he's doing just fine.

First things first: That Tide Super Bowl ad

Tambor came together with football star and low-key fun guy Rob Gronkowski for a rib-tickling TV spot for this year's football festivities. While Tambor is no stranger to working on commercials, this occasion was a bit different from the others.

"I've never met Mr. Gronkowski," Tambor told SheKnows, "and he invited me over to do this Tide commercial. He was so great and young and very talented. Quite comedic. We had a great time together." While Tambor himself didn't contribute anything to the cheeky awkwardness that makes this Tide Super Bowl spot so good, he does actually make the spot a thing of beauty. How could he not? This is Tambor we're talking about. He makes everything better.

What's even better is that fans will have two chances to spot Tambor during Sunday's big game: during the commercial and possibly in the stands during the Super Bowl game in Houston, Texas. When we asked about his plans for the day, he joked, "I'm literally going to the Super Bowl. I'll see you in section — oh, I shouldn't tell you my section."

There's no doubt he probably got prime seating to watch all the action unfold on the field, and the mystery location will surely make for a great halftime game of "Where in This Stadium Is Jeffrey Tambor?"

It's time for unity, truth and authenticity

After discussing the excitement surrounding his involvement in the Super Bowl, the conversation turned to the topic of America coming together for a happy occasion. Ever the pragmatist, Tambor took a moment to voice his opinions about the relief the Super Bowl could provide to America in these otherwise emotionally tumultuous times: "I think this is an important moment. I think it's great everybody wants to be united. I think that everybody wants things to go well, and I don't think it's a time for divisiveness. I think it's a time for truth, authenticity, and I can't think of a more lasting or enduring image right now than the Statue of Liberty."

Tambor's words hit home, and indeed, there is nothing but truth and honesty in his remarks. He was able to encapsulate the feelings of a great many of us right now as we barrel forward into a politically unstable future; for now, though, the image of the Statue of Liberty is a beautiful way to draw focus back toward calmness and unity.

We can't forget about Meryl Streep

But Tambor's commentary also reminds us of a trend happening during this awards season: actors rightfully voicing their political concerns. While some have derided actors as "Hollywood liberal elites" with no business using their platform to speak out, Tambor felt differently. Not only does he feel comfortable speaking up, but he's been able to commiserate with other actors, like Meryl Streep, about these matters. "My wife and I made a special trip to thank Meryl Streep for her brilliant speech at the SAG Awards," he told us. While Tambor did not mention whether it was truly as wonderful as an experience as one might imagine, chatting with Streep and discussing her speech, one likes to think it was indeed wonderful.

For now, Tambor is only focused on the weekend ahead, and that weekend is all about the Super Bowl. It's a good lesson to take away: only focus on the next day or so ahead of you, spend it with the people you cherish and focus on the good things in life. Without even knowing it, Tambor has been the great guiding force we've come to love.

5 Things To Know About Choosing a Dermal Filler

$
0
0

If you haven't already heard, Galderma (owners of Restylane and Dysport) are adding two new dermal fillers this spring - Restylane Refyne and Defyne. Refyne and Defyne are known in Europe as Emervel Classic and Deep and have been very popular for years. Restylane Refyne will be best used for fine to moderate lines and for enhancing the lips. Defyne is for moderate lines and areas that need more lift such as the cheeks, deeper nasolabial folds and marionettes.

This announcement comes right on the heels of two other new dermal fillers, Juvederm Volbella and Voluma, which brings the number of them in the US to 26. It sounds like a lot until you compare it to Europe who has over 130.

The reason Europe has so many more dermal fillers is because they are classified as non-prescription medical devices and in the US they are considered prescribed medical devices which limits who can and cannot inject them.

In both countries, hyaluronic acid (or HA's) are the most popular of the dermal fillers mostly because of their ability to be reversed and are typically more affordable than longer lasting dermal fillers. As the demand for dermal fillers increases, you can count on more HA's being available here in the US.

Here are five things that will help you choose which one is best for you!

1. Non-hyaluronic fillers are Bellafill (also known as Artefill), Allofill (donated human fat tissue), Sculptra (a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid) and Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) that's great for those who metabolize hyaluronic acid quickly and can be injected everywhere in the face except in the lips. These 4 fillers can last up to 5 years and should only be injected by an experienced health care professional. If you've never had dermal fillers before, these are not for you.

2. The better known FDA approved hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are Belotero Balance, Juvederm XC, Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Volbella XC, Juvederm Voluma XC, Restylane, Restylane Silk and Restylane Lyft.

3. The biggest difference in HA's is their particle size. For less volume, like the lips, you'd need a smaller particle sized product such as Restylane Silk or Juvederm Volbella XC. For more volume, say in the cheek area, you'd need a larger sized particle produced such as Juvederm Voluma XC or Restylane Lyft.

4. There are still some collagen dermal fillers being used (Evolence, Cosmoderm, Fibrel, Zyderm and Zyplast), however, they are very short lived when compared to the other dermal fillers and do not offer the 'lifting' that HA's do.

5. Keep in mind that the companies that own these dermal fillers are competing for your business! Most have loyalty programs (Brilliant Distinctions, Aspire Rewards and Xperience Program) that offer discounts if you are faithful to their products.

7 Tips for New Moms to Get Some Sleep

$
0
0

Just when you thought you could never get more tired than you were during pregnancy (randomly nodding off mid-conversation, anyone?), along comes motherhood and a whole new level of exhaustion. It's no wonder the term "mombie" has been coined to describe this period of life. There are days you really do feel like the walking dead.

More: Sorry, but being a mom isn't a job — it's even harder

That's the bad news... but there's some good news too. Not only do you get lots of cuddles in with that tiny human you created, but there are ways you can sneak in sleep. Take it from a mom who knows. My kids are 5 and 4, and I still rely on these tricks.

1. Banish caffeine

I realize this sounds counterintuitive; you're probably so tired you feel as though you can't function without a cup pot of coffee. What you probably don't realize, though, is you could very well be sabotaging yourself right out of slumber. Depending on your sensitivity to caffeine, drinking even one cup might wire you well into the night, meaning you won't be ready for your head to hit the pillow in the event you have an unexpected window for sleep.

2. Ask for help

That whole supermom instinct kicks in before the baby is even born, so it's no surprise moms feel like they should be able to handle it all when they're struggling through sleepless nights with a new baby. Your friends and family want to help, though. They are ready and willing to pitch in however they can. Sometimes that means keeping an eye on the baby while you take a shower. Other times, it means helping out around the house so you and baby can squeeze in a nap together. Don't be afraid or feel too proud to ask for a hand.

More: Perfect Facebook post captures the highs and lows of new motherhood

3. Take a night off

If you're breastfeeding, this can be tricky — you need to wait until your milk comes in before you give this a try. When you feel confident yours is coming in regularly, though, you can pump a bottle or two of milk for middle-of-the-night feedings. That way, you can get some relief by handing off night-feeding duty to your partner so you can get some much-needed rest. At first, your breasts may feel achy from skipping a feeding, but your body will adapt over time.

4. Figure out what relaxes you

There's a unique (and awful) phenomenon that happens when you are a new mom: you're bone-tired but somehow still can't fall asleep. Your mind and body are on high alert because, hey, you've got an adorable (and needy) bundle of joy to take care of. But you know you're much more equipped to take care of your family when you've had some shut-eye. Take the time to find your own magic formula for relaxation — whether that means a long soak in a hot bubble bath or an eye mask and white noise machine.

5. Learn to say no

Women are hardwired to want to do everything for everyone — often at the expense of their own well-being. There's never a better time to learn to turn down added responsibility then right now, when you're a new mom. You have enough on your plate; you don't need to add anything else to the menu. Just think of it this way — any time someone asks you to do something, that thing will take the place of a much-needed nap. That should make saying no a lot easier.

6. Focus on the future

Do these early sleep-deprived days kind of suck? Oh, yes indeed. If you're anything like me, Mama likes her sleep! You know what, though? You'll blink and your baby won't be a baby anymore. They'll no longer have that new baby smell on the top of their sweet head. They won't take a bottle or breast. And they'll start sleeping through the night. As the expression goes, "The days are long, but the years are short." Try to remember that when you feel like you just can't take one more sleepless night, and it might make the fatigue a bit more bearable.

More: The 10 parenting milestones no one tells you about

7. Talk to your doctor

If you still can't seem to get any shut-eye, it's important to talk to your doctor. Your body and brain need sleep to function properly, which is pretty crucial when you're taking care of your baby. Your doctor can rule out any underlying issues that could be causing your sleeplessness or even prescribe you with a gentle sleep aid so you can get some well-deserved rest.

What’s Hormone Replacement Therapy & Why Should Women Know About It?

$
0
0

Hormone replacement therapy, or hormone therapy, has been around since the 1940s.

Its initial intent was to decrease symptoms of menopause in women. However, by the 1960s, it was also being prescribed to transgender patients, such as trans actress and model April Ashley. Keep reading to learn more about the basic benefits, risks and uses of HRT.

More: 9 Things Every Menopausal Woman Will Definitely Have on Hand

What is HRT?

Hormone replacement therapy is defined as “medications containing female hormones,” such as estrogen and progesterone (or progestin, which is similar to progesterone). HRT can also include anti-androgens, which can reduce unwanted hair growth. However, HRT can also can also be medications containing male hormones (like testosterone) for female-to-male transitions.

Who uses HRT and why?

HRT, also known as just hormone therapy, is used to treat menopause in cisgender women and aid transgender people in their transition.

For menopausal women, HRT can help treat symptoms such as “hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and extreme mood fluctuations,” as well as decrease risk for osteoporosis and weakened bones.

For trans women, HRT introduces female hormones to the body and gives the body a more traditionally feminine appearance. HRT in trans women can decrease muscle mass and redistribute fat to create a softer, curvier figure and reduce growth of body and facial hair.

For trans men, increased testosterone encourages muscle growth, broadens shoulders, increases facial hair, shrinks breasts and stops menstruation.

More: Too Young for Hot Flashes? It Could Be Perimenopause

Do all trans people and menopausal women use HRT?

Nope! HRT is actually only recommended to treat very specific cases of menopause and can be dangerous if taken otherwise.

Not all trans people actually want to transition; some are perfectly content with their bodies as they are and choose not to subscribe to traditional physical standards of gender. Transness is still completely valid without any physical and hormonal changes.

Some trans people simply cannot afford hormone therapy or are otherwise restricted from taking it due to being underage. Some trans people are unable to come out as trans for fear for their safety, and thus do not start a physical transition.

What are the risks of HRT?

While HRT is considered safe in some circumstances, it can have some pretty severe side effects, like most medications.

Side effects for menopausal women include stroke, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, pulmonary embolism and deep-vein thrombosis (blood clots within the veins). Side effects for trans women are similar, with the addition of increased risk of liver damage. Increased testosterone in trans men can be as mild as slight allergic reactions or as severe as stroke.

It is important to remember that these side effects can be prevented and/or maintained by a medical professional and shouldn't be a deal-breaker.

More: These Two Life Events Could Predict Early Menopause

HRT is not a suitable option for all menopausal and/or trans people, but it can definitely be helpful or even life-changing for those who need it. If you are interested in taking HRT, either to help treat menopause or to transition, consult a medical professional. It can be very damaging to take more HRT than prescribed to speed up one’s transition, and it is a process that must be closely monitored by both the patient and their doctor. HRT pills are also sometimes sold illicitly on the internet for a cheaper price than they would be at most offices and clinics. This is an incredibly dangerous practice and should be avoided at all costs.

To find out where you can safely procure HRT, this is a great resource. There are also many personal blogs and videos online about real people’s experiences with HRT, including resources here and here.

Let's Take a Minute to Applaud SNL for Having Four Women Play Men

$

SNL was on fire last night, but not just because of Alec Baldwin's Trump impersonation. It was the four (yes, four!) women who hilariously played male characters that brought the house down, in what must be a first for the sketch comedy show in its 42nd season.

More: 13 Times Celebs Condemned Donald Trump & His Muslim Ban Policy at the 2017 SAG Awards

When we checked Twitter about 10 p.m. Pacific time on Saturday night, the tweets were already flying over Melissa McCarthy playing White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Our imaginations soared anticipating how funny she would be playing the double-talking, press-mocking Spicer, and she didn't disappoint.

Melissa McCarthy on SNL

Melissa McCarthy on SNL

The best line from the sketch came when McCarthy, as Spicer, described the reaction to Trump announcing his Supreme Court Justice pick, Neil Gorsuch. She said: "The crowd greeted him with a standing ovation, which lasted a full 15 minutes, and you can check the tape on that. Everyone was smiling... The men all had erections and every single one of the women was ovulating, left and right!"

More: Print Out Meryl Streep's Golden Globes Speech and Read It Every Day

But McCarthy wasn't the only talented actress to play a man on last night's show. SNL's Family Feud sketch brought us two more. Kate McKinnon reprised her impression of Justin Bieber as the man-child we know and love, and Leslie Jones could barely contain her own laughter as she portrayed actor Samuel L. Jackson.

Leslie Jones on SNL

Leslie Jones on SNL

Host Kristen Stewart also got into the act by donning boys' trousers to portray Charlie in a sketch about Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Seriously, Stewart can do anything! It was so fun to see her break out of her serious, too-cool-for-school demeanor and just get silly.

Kristen Stewart on SNL

Kristen Stewart on SNL

But it was SNL who found the real Golden Ticket by letting these four talented actresses play male characters. This is a big deal because, traditionally, it's been acceptable for men to play women in comedy (remember Dana Carvey's Church Lady?), but it's rarer for women to play men — most likely because there were plenty of male actors ready to play the male characters. Finally, funny women are getting their shot at adding their own unique spin on male-focused sketches, and it's a delight.

We hope to see a lot more gender-bending on SNL in the future.

Kristen Stewart's SNL Opening Monologue Made Twitter's Weekend

Kristen Stewart hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend and had the audience in the palm of her hand right from the start of her opening monologue.

She kicked it off by referencing a tweet President Donald Trump posted about her back in 2012: "Robert Pattinson should not take back Kristen Stewart. She cheated on him like a dog & will do it again--just watch. He can do much better." LOL.

More: Let's Take a Minute to Applaud SNL for Having Four Women Play Men

Stewart went on to reference several more negative things Trump tweeted about her in 2012, leading up to an important declaration that made the audience erupt in cheers.

"The president is not a huge fan of me, but that is so OK," Stewart said. "And Donald, if you didn't like me then, you're really probably not gonna like me now, 'cause I'm hosting SNL and I'm like, so gay, dude."

That wasn't the only memorable moment of Stewart's opening monologue. Right as she was about to wrap it up, the actress accidentally dropped an F-bomb, saying, "We've got a great show and I totally care that I'm here, 'cause it's the coolest fucking thing ever."

SNL cast members Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon, who were on stage with Stewart, erupted into laughter as she spun around in embarrassment. The actress said, "Oh my God and I'm sorry and Alessia Cara's also here and I'll never come back."

And even though the trailer was a blip in my nail-biting wait to watch Season 2 come Halloween 2017, we did learn some interesting things.

"The world is turning upside down," the trailer warned us of Season 2, which means that Eleven is coming back and so are a host of new nasties. That red sky looked no bueno.

More: The Stranger Things kids saved the 2016 Emmys with their nonstop coolness

The Demogorgon may be dead, but there are still plenty of bad things to visit the small Indiana town we all grew to love in Season 1.

On the flip side (see what I did there?), those Ghostbuster Halloween costumes are on fleek!

Thanks to previously released information, we know the second season will pick up a year after the first, and I'm so OK with this series turning Harry Potter-esque. Hopefully, we'll get to watch the kids grow into adults and eventually rule the world.

The one thing the trailer didn't tell me: Will Eleven finally grow out some luscious locks to rival Steve in Season 2? Guess we'll have to tune in to find out.

Raise your hand if your skin looks like a commercial for Pillsbury crescent rolls: flaky, crumbly, and falling apart (except, you know, way less delicious). Yeah, we feel you. If you’re in the parts of the country that are being pummeled by snow and arctic air, then there’s a good chance that your skin is currently raw and angry, and your usual arsenal of creams and lotions just aren’t cutting it.

Because when your skin is ticked off, the only thing that will make it angrier is slathering on a cute little indie lotion that smells of roses and promises to delicately moisturize your skin, blah, blah, blah, nope. You need the big guns. The formulas that come in less-than-pretty jars, but actually deliver on their promise to moisturize and soothe the heck out of your destroyed skin with intense hydrators, like ceramides, glycerin, aloe, and hyaluronic acid. Plus, all of the fruit and nut oils your little heart could desire.

Scroll down to find your favorite—or, you know, buy all of them; it can’t hurt!—and get yourself back to happy, hydrated skin.

Comedian Kathy Najimy Refuses to ‘Act and Speak’ How Hollywood Wants Her to

One of the actresses who has long been at the forefront of fighting sexism in Hollywood is a little surprising: Kathy Najimy. Yes, the comedian from Sister Act and Hocus Pocus. The one who voices Peggy on King of the Hill. She's a little under the radar, but she's also your new feminist queen.

This video from Makers, a storytelling platform for the women who are trailblazing in the entertainment world, sums up Najimy's career pretty well. From starting a feminist two-woman stage show back in the '90s all the way to speaking out against religious profiling and persecution today (hello, intersectionality!), Najimy has been fighting for most of her life to make the world a better place for all people.

Kathy Najimy Makers video

Kathy Najimy Makers video

And a lot of that has started with just bucking the idea of what a woman is "supposed" to look like in Hollywood.

"I had a quick lesson that there was a way that they thought women should act and speak, and certainly a way that women should look," Najimy says. "I'm not going to say that it wasn't a sad moment for me. It was. I think if you are always — and we are all always 'too fat,' 'too thin,' 'too dark,' 'too light,' 'too old,' 'too young,' and just not how we're supposed to be. And if we aren't ever how we are supposed to be, we are not able to rule the world."

Najimy's next move is to join in the evening performance at the Makers Conference tonight, where she'll be joined by other powerful, trailblazing women like Octavia Spencer, Eva Longoria, Gloria Steinem, Sheryl Sandberg and more.

How ‘Rainbow Mamas’ Are Helping to Spread Much-Needed Miscarriage Awareness

$

Most people probably think of this guy when hearing the words “double rainbow,” but for me, the term takes on extra-special meaning. Almost two years ago, I became pregnant with fraternal twins after several soul-sucking years of infertility. (One IUI, two canceled IUIs, three IVF cycles and two miscarriages, but who’s counting?) When I shared the happy news on Facebook, I was just as jubilant as the famed double rainbow dude — but not without mention of the babies I’d lost.

I’m one of an increasing number of women embracing the “rainbow baby” concept as a way to further the conversation around miscarriage. (If you’re not familiar, a rainbow baby is a baby born in the wake of pregnancy or infant loss.) The hashtag #RainbowBaby currently has more than 257,000 entries on Instagram, and rainbow-inspired maternity shoots are a thing now too. Rainbow baby props abound on Etsy, and some expectant moms are taking it a step further with elaborate photo setups.

Case in point: Connecticut-based pediatric nurse Jessica Mahoney, who sought to commemorate her successful pregnancy after six miscarriages. Her photographer utilized colored smoke bombs to form a rainbow cloud backdrop, with the results going viral. And Mahoney’s far from the only one making a visual statement about life after loss:

Boldface names have also played a vital part in spreading miscarriage awareness through raw, real pregnancy announcements. When Facebook mogul Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla announced their baby-to-be in 2015 (on Facebook — where else?), they discussed it in the context of their three previous miscarriages and how they had deeply impacted them. Last May, four months-pregnant actress Eva Amurri Martino wrote a post on her blog, Happily Eva After, about “Pregnancy after Miscarriage” and the complex whirlwind of emotion that accompanies it.

It’s all part of a collective movement toward not only much-needed catharsis, but also removing the shroud of silence that has long accompanied pregnancy loss.

“For some women, it feels poignant and meaningful to acknowledge previous losses while pregnant,” explains clinical psychologist Jessica Zucker, who specializes in women’s reproductive and maternal mental health. “By talking about [a] baby as a ‘rainbow,’ women are inviting others in on the storms they have weathered and the hope that continues.”

Zucker’s no stranger to the heartbreak of miscarriage herself, having experienced a traumatic loss at 16 weeks. In 2014, she coined the powerful viral hashtag #IHadaMiscarriage, and last fall, she released a line of Rainbow Babe- and Rainbow Mama-themed apparel — which sold out within the first 48 hours of launch.

“[The response] highlights just how much we women want to connect and share our stories — of grief, of hope, of complexity,” says Zucker. “We don’t need to sequester pain, but instead we understand that by shining light on dark times, the grief process does, in fact, move along and does so even more gracefully when we feel supported.”

Few know that better than LA-based moms Jennifer Chen and Rachel Schinderman, both of whom discovered they were pregnant with rainbow babies after opening up very publicly about their miscarriages. Chen’s BuzzFeed essay “Why I Don’t Want My Miscarriage to Stay Secret” sparked a subsequent video with over 1.85 million views on YouTube; less than a month after shooting the video, she learned she was pregnant with twin girls.

As for Schinderman, her long-awaited good news arrived during a stint in the show Expressing Motherhood, for which she performed a piece about having three miscarriages following the birth of her first son. “Reading [my piece] up on stage in front of so many people was really special, knowing I had this secret and it felt different, like it was going to take,” shares Schinderman.

Of course, not everyone who is open about pregnancy loss is a fan of the term “rainbow baby.” Writer Angela Elson recently penned a New York Times piece titled “The Japanese Art of Grieving a Miscarriage,” in which she detailed the traditional Jizo statue she and her husband created to honor their grief.

Though she is now a proud mother of two, she doesn’t view her children as rainbow babies: “I get the concept, but it makes it sound like the miscarriage was a gray and stormy time,” Elson says. “It was, but I still loved that baby: I had sun for [the] 10 weeks [I was pregnant]. I feel warm when I think of him. I don’t like to discount that.”

Schinderman agrees. “I try not to equate my son with the idea of being a rainbow baby,” she says. “He didn’t cause that sadness for me and I can’t expect him to solve it.”

Whether it’s rainbow-tinged or not, I believe that open discourse about miscarriage matters… a lot. After all, recent research shows that more than half of Americans mistakenly believe that miscarriage is rare — even though around 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss. Even worse, nearly half of women who experience miscarriage feel guilty about it.

“It’s time that we embrace heartbreak rather than running from it,” says Zucker. “My hope is that future generations grow up in a world where conversing about pregnancy loss is considered normative. Miscarriage isn’t going anywhere. It’s not a disease that can be cured. So the sooner we get comfortable talking about it, the faster the reported shame will dissipate.”

Moving to a New Place Can Change Your Personality

$

If you move to a new state, will you get a new state of mind? Yes, it turns out, according to a new study in the Journal of Research Personality, which looked at state-based differences in attitudes.

As someone who has made a few big moves (from Ohio to Ireland to New York City) I can absolutely confirm this from my own nonscientific method of observing my own personality. This was evident to me for the first time when I moved to Dublin, Ireland, during the George W. Bush administration. It was that delightful time when it was cool to shit on anything American — including personality traits. I was told by Irish friends and colleagues that they would “beat the Yank out of me yet,” primarily meaning they’d make me less outwardly confident (without alcohol), make me start apologizing for everything and teach me not to say or do anything “out of turn” (like having an opinion on a place where you weren’t born but definitely pay taxes).

More: A Guide for Americans Who Want to Move to Canada if Trump Wins

Ends up, these are the exact opposite personality traits that you need to survive in New York City — especially when riding the subway. It’s been nearly four years, but I’m finally settling into my new life here. Instead of saying “sorry” or “pardon” when someone else is standing in my way I found myself yelling “What are you waiting for, a fucking invitation?!” to a guy blocking foot traffic in Penn Station only yesterday. According to this new study, this makes sense, as New York ranks as one of the most neurotic and least agreeable states in the country.

But aren’t these just geographic stereotypes? Sort of, lead author William Chopik, a psychologist at Michigan State University told New York Magazine’s The Science of Us — but a lot of them are confirmed.

More: How "Rainbow Mamas" Are Helping to Spread Much-Needed Miscarriage Awareness

But before trading in your MetroCard for a minivan and moving to the Midwest to make you a “nicer” person, consider that the degree of influence a place has on a person depends on what drives their personality in general.

New York City apartment buildings
Image: littleny/Getty Images

According to Jason Rentfrow, a psychologist at the University of Cambridge, this typically involves three factors that may, individually or together, shape state and regional variation: migration patterns, ecology and social influence. Migration patterns make sense. For example, once a city gets a reputation as being a haven for artists, naturally it will attract other like-minded individuals — or those interested in living near artistic folk.

The impact of ecology turns up in the form of seasonal behavioral changes — like a place with year-round sunny weather resulting in putting transplants from colder climates in better moods.

But like many things, peer pressure can have the biggest impact on a person’s behavior, as people tend to mimic the practices and attitudes of those surrounding them. I can definitely relate to that. In my first few months in New York, a man got on the 7 train dressed head to toe in Tommy Bahama apparel and carrying a foldable beach chair, looking completely out of place in Queens, like he was en route to a Jimmy Buffet convention. Clearly annoyed with having to share the space with us commuters, he kept hitting people with the beach chair and ultimately ended up resting it on top of my head. While was trying mentally to coming up with a strategy, this amazing woman next to me looked him squarely in the eyes, said “NOPE” and moved the chair off the top of my head.

Now, several years later, I’m proud to say that I’m the mouthy lady who will force an entitled teenage boy out of his subway seat so an elderly person can sit down or will make sure a fellow commuter isn’t getting hit on the head by a folding beach chair. Thanks for that, New York.

Starbucks’ New Valentine's Day Drinks Will Put You in the Mood (to Treat Yourself)

The season of hearts and flowers may not be for everyone, but chocolate and caffeine will always win people's hearts. To that end, Starbucks has rereleased last year’s Valentine’s Day seasonal promotion, a trio of insanely decadent beverages inspired by the quintessential Valentine’s dinner dessert: molten chocolate lava cake.

These limited-time drinks (only available through Feb. 14) include a Molten Chocolate Latte, Molten Chocolate Frappuccino, and the Molten Hot Chocolate. The Molten Chocolate Latte involves chocolate chips melted into espresso and topped with steamed milk and a bittersweet mocha sauce as well as mocha and espresso-infused whipped cream and an espresso mocha drizzle. Dear God.

The Molten Chocolate Frappuccino is along the same lines — a blended iced beverage mixing the coffee with chocolate chips and mocha sauce — and the Molten Hot Chocolate blends mocha sauce and chocolate chips into steamed milk.

Whether or not you have a date this Valentine's Day, these drinks will put you in a good mood in no time, especially if you love chocolate and caffeine — and who doesn't?

Tori Spelling and Her Huge Bump Watched the Super Bowl Together, We Swear

Donna Martin, er, Tori Spelling is not my personal #LifeGoals queen. I'll admit it. No hate, just a sense of sheer exhaustion and heartburn that washes over me when I look at her latest social media photos. Girl, you must be tired.

Spelling is expecting her — wait for it — fifth child with husband Dean McDermott. The two have had a notoriously rocky road, but things seem to be going pretty swimmingly for them (and Dean's man seed). Not to mention Spelling, McDermott and their kids also recently brought home a pet pig, Nutmeg. You know. Like ya do, when you're ready to pop and bring a fifth human into the world, because it's getting so ho-hum. Pigs are the spice of domestic life!

More: Can't we all just be happy for Tori Spelling, y'all?

Here's the weird thing: Spelling been all over Instagram promoting that baby bump. And just yesterday, the Bump asked her nicely to please go get more Totino's pizza rolls during the big game, but Spelling was all like, "Chill, Bump. I have to document our Super Bowl date on Instagram." And then she posted, "Just #kickinit couchside with my bump and my furboo watching the #superbowl."

Tori Spelling pregnancy pic
Image: Daily Mail

But now it looks like Spelling has yanked the pic from her feed. Whyyyyyy? Why, Tori?

Admittedly, the photo made us want to haul her into an upright sitting position and force-feed her Pepto (I would have had dragon flames scorching my esophagus attempting Spelling's laid-back pregnancy recline). OK. We confess we were worried about her posture. But still. Were you worried your braids were too Kirsten Dunst? They weren't, doll. You just do you.

More: Uh-uh, Tori Spelling is in more financial trouble

Spelling and McDermott — married since 2006 — are already parents to Liam, 9, Stella, 8, Hattie, 5, and Finn, 4. Can somebody bring me a cot so I can take a nap? Dang, Tori. You make the rest of us 40-somethings look like dried-up, barren underachievers. Good luck with the pig. And baby Nutmeg. Oh, wait. The pig is Nutmeg? Just send us a birth announcement. This is getting too confusing.

There's no doubt Stranger Things Season 1 was a huge success. It is one of the best series that has ever come to Netflix, so thankfully, there is a second season.

More: Finally there's proof Stranger Things' Steve is actually Jean-Ralphio's dad

From castings to returning characters to episode details, here's everything you need to know before commencing the binge of Season 2.

1. Episode titles

Thanks to this teaser, we now know the titles of each Season 2 episode. Let the speculation begin.

2. Eleven is officially back

Based on how Season 1 ended, it was unclear if or how Eleven would return to Season 2. Do not fret, because Eleven is returning. Although, how many episodes she'll be featured in and if she'll play a huge part like she did in the first season remains unknown.

Not only is Eleven part of the above photo (which is obviously making a fun play on the Upside Down), but so are Dustin, Lucas, Mike, Will, Jonathan, Nancy, Steve and two new faces. The caption reads, "Back in production. See you next year."

4. More Steve and Will

As reported by TVLine in October, both Steve (Joe Keery) and Will (Noah Schnapp) are now series regulars.

5. So many new characters

Stranger Things S2 casting

Stranger Things S2 casting

The Stranger Things cast is going to be even bigger than it was in the first season. According to TVLine, Sadie Sink (American Odyssey) will play Max, who is said to be a “tough and confident girl whose appearance, behavior and pursuits seem more typical of boys than of girls in this era." Then, there is Power Rangers' Dacre Montgomery, who is set to play Max's "hyper-confident, edgy older step-brother. He steals girlfriends away from their boyfriends, is great at drinking games, and drives a black Camaro. But lurking under his apparent charisma, is a violent and unpredictable nature."

As revealed by Entertainment Weekly, Paul Reiser (Mad About You), Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings, Goonies) and Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen will also be part of Season 2. Reiser will play Dr. Owens, "a high-ranking member within the Department of Energy on a ‘clean-up’ assignment, tasked with containing the events of last year." Astin will play Bob Newby, "a kindhearted former nerd who went to high school with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour) and now manages the local Hawkins RadioShack." Finally, Berthelsen will play Roman, "an emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child. Although she does not live in Hawkins, she is mysteriously connected to the supernatural events at the lab…"

6. All about Will

Stranger Things, Will
Image: Giphy

All of Season 1 focused on saving Will and seeing as that was accomplished in the last episode, he will become even more of a focus. In addition to Schnapp being a series regular, Matt and Ross Duffer (aka, the Duffer Brothers and the creators of Stranger Things) told reporters at the Television Critics' Association in July that the sophomore season would look into the "bigger mythology" behind Will's disappearance. Matt said, "It’s open-ended in a way that if people wanted it, and Netflix wanted it, we could explore it and continue the storyline."

7. A time jump

Mike, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

When Season 2 finally premieres, it will pick up in 1984, the Duffer Brothers revealed to EW in July. Even though it's only a one-year time jump, Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers) told Entertainment Tonight in November, "You follow these characters a year later, and you're straight back in the world of Hawkins, [Indiana], which we know and love so well. The scope feels bigger this year." Also regarding the time jump, Heaton added, "I don’t think you're gonna notice. Even though it's a year, you're falling straight back into where we left off, in a sense."

8. We'll see more than just Hawkins

Jonathan, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

The Duffer Brothers also told EW that Season 2 will travel outside of Hawkins. "We will venture a little bit outside of Hawkins," Matt said. "I will say the opening scene [of the premiere] does not take place in Hawkins."

9. There are nine episodes

Dustin, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

It's only one more episode than Season 1, but Season 2 will include nine episodes. Matt told EW, "We’re letting the story dictate it. I think if it gets any longer, it gets unwieldy for us. We want to make sure it’s manageable and we want to be able to tell a movie-like story where it’s never treading water. We want it to have the same feel and pacing as Season 1. I think if we extend it too much, it will have a very different feel."

10. Even more from the Upside Down

Joyce, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

If you thought the Upside Down storyline was finished, you're wrong. There is so much more to learn, Matt dished to EW. "We kinda just peeled back the curtain and revealed a tiny bit of the Upside Down. So we definitely want to explore a little bit more. There’s a lot we don’t know about the Upside Down at the end of Season 1."

11. Joyce is getting a love interest

Stranger Things, Joyce
Image: Giphy

During a Jan. 21 Fan2Sea Comic-Con cruise (via Hollywood Life) David Harbour (he plays Hopper), dished, "We have Sean Astin… he’s Winona’s new boyfriend — much to the chagrin to the Chief of Police." So does this also mean Hopper and Joyce may soon have a romance?

12. "Justice for Barb"

David Harbour, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

If you consider yourself a huge fan of Barb, Harbour also teased at the panel that she will be part of the storyline, but not physically. "The question and the feelings that Nancy has that no one ever cares about her friend Barb are very much present in the beginning of the season," he revealed.

13. There is some fallout

Stranger Things, Eleven
Image: Giphy

According to Harbour, there is also some major fallout between certain people, which is to be expected. "It’s a year later in the story, so there are several things that happened last year — like Will has come back — there are certain people in the town that know what happened, and then certain people that don’t know what happened." He added, "So there’s a lot of fallout with who knows what."

14. This ominous teaser

During the 2017 Super Bowl, a Stranger Things teaser dropped. There are a ton of clues in it, especially an Eleven appearance, a seemingly scary new monster and a shoutout to Eggo waffles. Oh, we also have an official premiere date. Season 2 debuts Halloween. How perfect is that?

Jordan Peele and Chelsea Peretti Are Expecting a Super-Funny Baby

We are the first to admit that we get a little ramped up when we hear that two funny people have united to make a funny baby. This world, in case you haven't noticed, is desperately in need of its funny people right now. And two of our tippy-top favorites are Jordan Peele (Key and Peele) and Chelsea Peretti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine).

More: Everything You Need to Know About Chelsea Peretti and Jordan Peele

The two announced that they are expecting their first kid — who we predict will pratfall out of the womb, do a spit take and slip on a banana peel, all before being issued the standard candy-striped hospital baby blanket and little hat. Peretti announced the news by sharing a photo of her bump inside a swanky mirrored art installation. (Because they are just that cool! Funny people are cool and go to art installations!)

But our favorite part of this pregnancy announcement is Peretti's caption:

“Beyonce schmonce,” she wrote, poking fun at Bey's world-dominating twins announcement earlier in the week.

What? You didn't know Peretti and Peele were together? (We think it sounds better than Key and Peele — no offense, Keegan-Michael Key. We love you, too.) The two sneaky-pants comics have actually been together for more than three years. They eloped, because again: coolness factor through the roof. Peele revealed the news during an April 2016 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and Peretti confirmed that news on Instagram shortly thereafter:

10 Reasons Lady Gaga is So Much More Than Your Typical Pop Star

$

Um, did ya see the halftime show at Super Bowl LI last night? Tom Brady may have secured his place as the GOAT NFL quarterback when he ushered the Patriots into an unbelievable comeback to beat the Falcons, but Lady Gaga's crazy performance of all her greatest hits solidified her title as the reigning Queen of Pop. Sorry Madonna.

Yes, Gaga's halftime extravaganza was mind-blowing, but it's not the only reason we love her. Here are all the ways Gaga has broken the typical pop star mold over the years.

1. When she opened up about her PTSD

In an effort to help others with PTSD and other mental illnesses, Lady Gaga opened up to a group of LGBT youth in New York about her own PTSD that was a result of a sexual assault that occurred earlier in her life.

"Meditation helps me to calm down," she told the group during her visit in New York, via CNN. "I don't have the same kinds of issues that you have, but I have a mental illness and I struggle with that mental illness every day so I need my mantra to help keep me relaxed."

2. She never fails to keep it real

Lady Gaga dive bar

Talk about a superstar who isn't letting the fame get to her head — Gaga's tour event in Oct. 2016 was a total surprise that caught even her biggest fans off guard. Instead of doing the glitz, glamour and lights to promote her album Joanne — which came out Oct. 21 — Gaga opted for a secret dive bar tour instead. It wasn't until early October that three select showcases were announced in local Nashville bars to debut the songs on her new album.

3. When she tackled the rape epidemic

Till it happens to you - Gaga

Till it happens to you - Gaga

In her song and video for the 2015 single, "Til It Happens to You," Gaga boldly addresses the prevalence of rape in contemporary culture. It's moving and it feels real and personal — and now we know why. It goes deeper than common pop music.

4. Her role in American Horror Story: Hotel

Lady Gaga AHS

Lady Gaga AHS

Yes, many a pop star has gotten their start in acting or even gone on to score acting roles after they gained mainstream success, but Gaga's portrayal of a 100-year-old hemophiliac on the latest season of AHS is a far cry from Desperately Seeking Susan or Burlesque. Gaga successfully creates an eerie character that is truly captivating.

5. When she ignored the Twitter hate after a big win

Lady Gaga Twitter

Speaking of AHS, Gaga's performance on the show was good enough to win her a Golden Globe in early 2016 — an honor that the Twittersphere did not appreciate. When Twitter fans accused her of going the boring Hollywood route (and following in the footsteps of other talented musicians who have won Golden Globes, like Madonna and Cher), Gaga kept her cool and didn't clap back. Unsurprisingly, she was the most tweeted about celebrity of the night.

6. She keeps her personal relationships private

In this day and age, it almost seems a requirement for pop stars to divulge more of their private lives than is healthy in order to keep their fans engaged. In the past, Gaga, leaked just enough details of her relationship with her then-fiancé, Taylor Kinney, to satisfy fans and keep her icon status, but she didn't overshare to the point at which things get weird or become tabloid fodder. While the couple has since (sadly) taken a break, Gaga remains a class act and still calls Kinney her "best friend."

7. She recorded with Tony Bennett

I mean, really, it doesn't get more impressive than performing jazz standards with Bennett.

"The second we were in the studio together, it was so magical," Gaga said to E! News last year of recording the album Cheek to Cheek with the icon. "We were bouncing improvisation off each other and we were laughing. And then, gradually, we became greater and greater friends. And I think because of that, our singing became more and more honest and more and more authentic."

8. She impressed the legendary Julie Andrews

No small feat, but Gaga was able to win over Andrews after her stunning Sound of Music medley at the 2015 Academy Awards. The stripped-down version of Gaga showcased her voice and proved that she's not a pop star in need of Auto-Tune.

9. She broke up a fight in her own audience

Mother Monster showed the world she is in full control of all of her performances at all times when she abruptly stopped singing to retrieve a jacket two fans were fighting over after she had thrown it into the audience.

"If you're going to fight, you don't get to keep it," she said, adding, "Here, we practice love." You go, Gaga.

10. She came out as bisexual

Recently, pop stars like Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus have made statements about the possibility of their bisexuality, and their paths were definitely forged by Gaga, who boldly came out several years ago.

"I like girls," she revealed in an episode of Watch What Happens Live in 2013. "I've said that (before). I know people think I just say things to be shocking, but I actually do like p****. It just depends on whose p**** it is."

How do you think Lady Gaga stands out from the rest?

Everything I Did To Calm My Acne-Prone Skin a Week Before My Wedding

The seating arrangement finalized, our Spanish tile favors stamped, the only thing I hadn’t tended to for my wedding in San Juan? My skin. And when I finally ran smack dab into a mirror, about 9 days before my wedding, I really feared it was too late for such a big intervention.

I've struggled with acne and scarring nearly my entire life and slathered everything short of Accutane to keep it in check. (I did fill out paperwork and get the initial blood test, but the oversized booklet stamped with bright red warning symbols on nearly each page can truly put off an adventurous gal, even during desperate times.)

Enter over-the-counter and prescription potions, light therapy, photodynamic treatments, CO2 ablative lasers, spironolactone. Sure, weaning off spironolactone two months before the wedding (we want to start trying for kids soon) was probably a decision to file under "nah, wouldn't do that again." For years the side effects had my extremities frostbitten from low blood pressure and I was tired of feeling dizzy and blurry every time I would stand up too quickly.

You can probably imagine that growing up as a teen wasn’t exactly easy. My skin was the fodder of schoolyard bullies. It was the first and only thing they could and would see, and the fixation doubly warped my own sense of self-confidence for years to come. Quite unfortunately the dermatologists I consulted with did nothing to alleviate the physical and emotional damage being inflicted every time a new blemish came to the surface.

Surely if I could live my life over again I’d become a dermatologist myself. While the overhead of medical school time and bills is certainly daunting, years ago I instead dove right into the world of beauty reporting. I’ve since partitioned my face into quadrants in order to test as many products as possible. Vitamin C serums, more please. Any overnight cream with slick silicone, absolutely not! If a product worked for my skin, let's agree that we can pretty much green-light it for 90% of the population. My bad skin gave me a reporting edge. Too bad wedding planning, work and my personal responsibilities had me failing to heed my own advice of sticking to a sound regimen and consulting with a dermatologist on a more routine basis. That's life, huh?

I knew time wasn’t on my side, and that running around town to get several opinions wouldn't be an option. Instead I clicked over to RealSelf’s Ask a Doctor forum where I’d be able to quickly survey a landscape of suggestions from area doctors.

Three board-certified dermatologists chimed in, this was getting exciting! While Dr. Michelle Green asserted there wouldn't be enough time to recover from lasers such as Fraxel or eMatrix or even a strong peel she recommended a special pigment protocol of Retin-A cream at bedtime and a hydroquinone in the morning. This would address my oily acne-prone skin and begin bleaching out hyperpigmentation. She did recommend a light chemical peel, just enough to give impart a glow without causing any irritation before the "Big Day.” I was initially skeptical of starting Retin-A, especially given my experience of it making skin worse before making it better.

I stopped in my tracks when dermatologic surgeon Dr. Joel Schlessinger advised no medical intervention whatsoever. Yes, nothing! "While there are many products and regimens out there to help with skin issues like you mention, I am not a fan of changing things one week before a wedding.” He noted, “there simply isn't any time to pivot if things go wrong." He recommended new makeup, a mattifying moisturizer, avoiding dairy and going cold turkey on any protein supplements as they can contribute to acne.

Dr. Sejal Shah, founder of Smarter Skin Dermatology, on the other hand, recommended a vitamin C serum and hydroquinone, an at-home light device, and either an in-office Picogenesis or a Clear + Brilliant treatment. The Clear + Brilliant is affectionately referred to as “baby Fraxel” and while it doesn’t completely address dramatic concerns, it improves skin tone, texture and clarity by creating micro-injuries that jumpstart the production of collagen and calms down sebaceous glands by drying up the oil under the skin. Plus, the only downtime is a rosy pink glow for one or two hours post-procedure, I was all in! Even if makeup applied smoother on my wedding day, that would be benefit enough. While there was a bit of a pit in my stomach considering what might go wrong at this last-minute stage maybe I should just get that mattifying moisturizer? I made an appointment with Dr. Shah, with exactly one week to go before my wedding. Wish me luck.

After 20-minutes of a topical numbing cream, we were ready to 'roll' - literally! The Clear + Brilliant laser is rolled over the skin, three to four passes per section. Suffering from several active cystic blemishes, acne scarring, large pores, unbalanced skin and hyperpigmentation, I must say those butterflies of dread faded to the excited at the prospect of it working out. “At the end of a week everyone feels their skin looks so much better,” Shah reassured me.

The 15-minute procedure was quickly over and I iced for an additional few. My skin was slightly flushed and for the next few hours felt warmer, as if I was sitting poolside at a Bahamas resort. Later that night I put my fingertips to the surface of my skin. It felt soft, as if I had exfoliated pretty thoroughly. The cystic blemishes were beginning to flatten! I couldn’t believe it.

As described, the second and third day in, skin begins to slough off. There is a fine-grit sandpaper feel to the surface, but it doesn't necessarily rub off on your fingers. If you looked very close I mean, super close, you could see tiny little black dots, evidence of the lasers columns of heat that were driven into the skin. These microscopic little wounds were healing, and in the process topping off fresh collagen, giving skin a bouncy new texture. Or maybe I had some micro-swelling. Either way, I looked plump and I liked it. I reluctantly applied makeup over the rougher surface and was shocked at how good it looked and for hours on end! The laser had temporarily slowed down my oil production and my foundation, bronzer and blush didn’t crease, move or fade. I was already feeling optimistic about the week’s end result.

Over the course of the next few days I could see that hyperpigmentation was beginning to dissolve, pores and acne scars were tighter and the overall texture was becoming more refined and even. I could apply a makeup and concealer with a lighter hand and didn’t have to pat down creased foundation lines with the gentle tap of my ring finger to smooth things back down around my smile lines and upper cheek.

Wedding day was finally here! After helping bridesmaids with their makeup, I applied Roloxin Lift Instant Skin Smoothing Mask for 15 minutes to further shrink pores temporarily. After rinsing off with lukewarm water I dabbed on Hourglass Veil Primer and Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick and a few minutes later stood back. I did have a glow! With nary a blemish in sight, I was instantly in a better, lighter mood. I was ready for the altar.
It's been two weeks since the procedure and my skin keeps improving. Not a breakout, an overall even-toned complexion and pore size that has remained steady. Oil-production has begun creeping back but doesn't compare to pre-treatment. Shah recommends a series of Clear + Brilliant sessions for best results, and given this before and after, this may become my go-to before a special event. Turns out you can go against all sound beauty advice and prevail!
While wishing for better skin has been a daily repertoire my entire adult life, I've begun to better accept it and not hold it as a crutch. Hey, one might appreciate honest testing and reporting from a gal who has truly been there!
