Alexis Bledel secretly dated pretty much everyone on the Gilmore Girls cast

Everyone knows by now that Alexis Bledel, who plays Rory Gilmore on Gilmore Girls, dated her onscreen boyfriend in real life. Her relationship with Milo Ventimiglia, who played her bad-boy love interest Jess Mariano, was well publicized.

More: Lorelai & Rory be damned! Jess, Dean, Sookie & Logan are back in new Gilmore Girls trailer

But what we didn't know is that Bledel dated not even one, but two of her other co-stars while she was on Gilmore Girls. She kept her relationships private at the time, but apparently she dated so many people from the show, it became a running inside joke on set.

"We did have a joke about casting all of Alexis’ [real-life] boyfriends," casting director Mara Casey dished, revealing for the first time that one of Bledel's real-life boyfriends was Jared Padalecki, who played her other boyfriend on the series, Dean. Casey continued, "She dated Jared and Milo. And she also dated a young New York actor named Chris Heuisler, who played a guest role. Real sweet kid."

More: Twitter's wrong about Gilmore Girls — Logan is the right man for Rory

Considering what casting director Jami Rudofsky had to say about Bledel's co-stars, it's not surprising that she ended up dating a bunch of them.

"Sometimes with casting, the right person just walks in and you just feel it," she said about the time she had Bledel do a chemistry read with Ventimiglia, adding that the chemistry between the two was just undeniable, both on- and offscreen. The same thing happened with Padalecki, who didn't even need to do a chemistry read because it was obvious he was right for the role, Rudofsky said.

"There had already been two Deans cast before we found him," she added. "But there is something about Jared."

Tell Us: Why is your favorite Christmas movie the best of all time?

It is a universal fact that the best Christmas movie ever is White Christmas. I dare anyone to not get choked up during the opening scene when they're sending General Waverly away from the World War II front and into retirement. As a kid I spent hours trying to recreate the elaborate dance scenes, and to this day I drive my family nuts warbling "White Christmas" at the top of my lungs all season long.

It is without a doubt my favorite holiday movie, and I will argue why it's the best until I'm blue in the face.

via GIPHY

My mother however, is a sucker for Miracle on 34th Street and woe betide a Thanksgiving that does not leave time for at least one viewing of her favorite classic. Its message that belief can bring out the innate goodness in humanity, no matter how busy or cynical we may be, fills her with joy every time.

via GIPHY

Are Elf's hilarious antics more your speed, or do you watch TBS' marathon of The Christmas Story every year to see Ralphie shoot his eye out? Maybe The Grinch or Hallmark's never-ending supply of new feel good flicks are your thing. Perhaps seasonal movies like Love, Actually or Die Hard get you in the spirit each year. No matter which movie is your favorite, I'd bet you're just as enthusiastic about defending it as I am.

So tell us, what's your favorite Christmas movie and why is it THE BEST EVER? Respond in the comments and we might include your answer in a roundup on SheKnows!

To fight post-election bigotry, support minority-owned businesses

During the recent election, blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, women, and people with disabilities were mocked and belittled. Since Donald Trump was elected a week ago, the Southern Poverty Law Center has counted over 400 hate crimes.

More: Being a work at home dad makes it hard to be there for my kids

Many people are now asking what they can do to make the world a better place. I've seen wonderful advice about how you can donate money, volunteer and fundraise for organizations that support communities experiencing hate and discrimination.

The one thing I haven't seen talked about is economic empowerment. This is America, and money is power.

Supporting the businesses of entrepreneurs who are Hispanic, LGBTQ, Muslim, black, women and/or live with disabilities will make a difference in their lives, and it will help their families and their communities. As an entrepreneur, I know this very well.

I turned to my friends to create a curated list of businesses owned by these people, and a funny thing happened: I realized I don't know any Hispanic, LGBTQ or Muslim entrepreneurs. I'm black and I fancy myself as having a fairly diverse group of friends, but I now realize I haven't been as supportive of these communities as I could be.

So I started with the people I know, then reached out to find more. I hope you can help add to this list.

Black-owned businesses

Naturally, this list is relatively long because I'm black and I'm an entrepreneur, so I know a lot of black business owners.

Art:

  • addyeB: A'Driane Nieves' mission is the create art that not just evokes emotion, but sparks dialogue and self-reflection.
  • The Art of Maurice Evans: Maurice Evans believes, "The only thing we have in life is art and love."

Children's products

  • Anamazee's: The first and only 5-in-1 baby pacifier
  • DreamKeepersBox: A monthly subscription box that allows black kids to learn about science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math.

Clothing

  • Tees in the Trap: T-shirts that are a little trendy, somewhat edgy, and always fly.
  • Zuvaa: Super-trendy fashion from African designers.
  • Bambini Ware: Smart and stylish gear for babies and kids.

Dolls

Haircare

  • Koils By Nature: High quality, all natural hair and skin care products at an affordable price.
  • Naturalicious: A clever collection of multi-tasking and non-toxic hair care that helps busy beauties rock fabulous hair everyday, in a fraction of the time.

Home décor

  • WeMontage: In my business, we turn your digital images into large removable wallpaper.

Interior Designers

Media

  • Cocoa Fab: CocoaFab is a fast-paced celebrity news and style site covering urban pop culture.

Podcasts

  • Smart Brown Voices: A weekly podcast designed to help inspire you to reach the next level in your life by connecting you to powerful and diverse voices of value.
  • Biz Underdog to Top Dog: If you are an aspiring business owner, a startup, an entrepreneur, solopreneur or small business owner, they bring you the success formula you've been longing for.

Skincare

Subscription Boxes

  • Ujamaa Box: A subscription box service that features products from black-owned businesses to create economic empowerment in the black community.
  • COCOTIQUE:A subscription box for women who love beauty and are in search of an affordable way to try new beauty and lifestyle brands.

Muslim-owned businesses

  • Louella: A clothing line started by U.S. Olympic fencer, Ibtihaj Muhammad.
  • The Writer's Block Communications: Provides copy for businesses, magazines, and political entities. She is also a war zone reporter.

Businesses owned by people with disabilities

  • MinouBazaar: Indian and global inspired handmade jewelry all made in the USA.
  • myXpression: Wheelchair headrests and cushion covers as well as dog leashes and collars.
  • 3ELove (clothing): A social entrepreneurial experiment to change the perception of disability.

Hispanic-owned businesses

  • La Plataforma: Save money while sending cash to Latin America and the Caribbean.

LGBTQ-owned businesses

  • ZenBiz Travel: A travel agency that manages travel for groups and individuals, and offers media, event management, and promotional services.

I need your help to improve the list

I was only able to find one Hispanic business to include on this list, and my small network of Hispanic friends didn't know of any others. I found a few directories online, but they weren't helpful, and the same was true for LGBT-owned businesses. The GimpGirl community helped me identify a few entrepreneurs with disabilities to include on the list, but I'd like to display more.

When I did my outreach, I discovered something that made me sad. One woman who is a Muslim entrepreneur contacted several of her friends, and without exception they all declined to be included. She told me the Muslim community has become very insular due to many threats, and inclusion in a list of this type is concerning. I also learned that some LGBTQ entrepreneurs don't want to be included on a list like this, because they too don't want to be harassed or bullied.

So if you know of any entrepreneurs who might want to be included, please send this link to them so they can add themselves in the comments as they choose. I only ask that the businesses be able to ship their product throughout the United States.

The bad news just keep on coming — VPR's Scheana & Shay are getting divorced

There's more bad news for Vanderpump Rules' Scheana and Michael Shay.

More: Don't freak, but Vanderpump Rules might be losing a cast member this season

The two have been facing rumors about their relationship for years, but they seem to have intensified lately, saying that Shay has been taking money from the couple's joint account and disappearing on drug and alcohol benders.

Now, a source close to both parties is telling In Touch Weekly that Scheana and Shay are officially ready to call it quits, two years into their marriage.

"Scheana and Mike are living separately at the moment. He’s been staying with his family. They are headed for a divorce," the insider claims.

Apparently, the problem is, once again, Shay's struggle with addiction. The source says the first sign of trouble came when Scheana noticed that "a lot of money began disappearing from their joint bank account."

More: VPR's Jax Taylor teases that he & Bethenny Frankel 'kissed a little bit' — what?

The insider adds, "Mike needs help. Scheana believes that he’s drinking and smoking pot again. He insisted he’s sober and wants people to believe he’s innocent of everything. As much as Scheana loves him, she just can’t be with someone like that."

Shay's addiction issues first came to light during Vanderpump Rules' fourth season, when Shay disappeared to his family's home and didn't even speak to Scheana for a week. When he finally returned to her apartment, she had all their friends waiting to host a sort of intervention.

Shay promised then to stop using drugs, but continued to drink heavily throughout the season. At the Season 4 reunion, he revealed that he hadn't had alcohol in several months. Rumors have been flying for weeks now that Shay relapsed and it's been putting strain on his and Scheana's relationship, but both of them denied it on Instagram.

4 lessons your child can learn from helping with Thanksgiving dinner

$

A golden turkey, surrounded by dozens of delicious side dishes and desserts, is the main mark of Thanksgiving for many American families. The hard work that accompanies the preparation of this meal and its cleanup are certainly less glamorous, but in the case of the former, helping with Thanksgiving dinner can impart key lessons to students.

More: Turn your pumpkin activities into a learning opportunity for your kids

While passing on family recipes and traditions is one such benefit, there are others that directly relate to the K-12 classroom. Here are four to consider as Thanksgiving approaches:

Collaboration

A traditional Thanksgiving dinner with its entree, multiple side dishes, and multiple desserts is a difficult task for one person to accomplish alone. Successful Thanksgiving meals are often the result of collaboration, just as a successful education will occasionally require collaboration with peers and teachers. You can begin to introduce your child to the basics of collaboration by sharing tasks— for instance, your student can wash the vegetables that you will chop and roast as a side dish. Children in middle and high school can even take full responsibility for an entire component of the meal, such as a dessert.

Communication

Communication plays an integral role in effective collaboration, but it is also important in its own right. Strong communication skills will serve your student well both in school and in the workplace, and the hours before Thanksgiving dinner are the perfect stage upon which to practice. Ask your child to direct you through creating a dish that involves multiple steps, and do precisely as she says—how do her words translate? Were there unexpected gaps in your understanding? You can unpack the results with your student and then change roles to allow her to experience (and refine!) both sides of the communication process.

More: No, your kid doesn't have to do every extracurricular activity

Problem-solving

We have all experienced a kitchen disaster: Your entree burns, you forget a key ingredient, or your dessert fails to rise properly. These moments can be frustrating, but they are also excellent learning opportunities for children of all ages. If you require baking soda for your Thanksgiving dinner, and if all the shops in your neighborhood are closed, can you and your student conduct an Internet search for an alternative? Can you salvage a burning dish with a bit of aluminum foil? Problem-solving is a critical skill in subjects as diverse as English literature and mathematics, so why not practice it over the holidays?

Time management

As you likely already know, baking a pumpkin pie or roasting a whole turkey requires more than 30 minutes. In the days before Thanksgiving, sit down with your child and ask her to help you plan your meal preparation. For example, how long will the stuffing require? How complicated is the crust for your chosen pie? When does the grocery store close on the day before Thanksgiving? Do you have other commitments to simultaneously balance? As you develop a schedule with your student, draw parallels to her schoolwork. How does Thanksgiving compare to that complex school project she has been putting off?

Charlie Sheen's kids are reportedly safe after a bizarre string of events

Charlie Sheen's kids were apparently missing earlier today, and while police have called off the search, the circumstances surrounding the whole situation are just really bizarre.

More: Charlie Sheen was supposedly looking for a hit man to take his ex out

Sheen and his ex-wife, Brooke Mueller, have been battling over custody of their kids since they separated in 2010. Police were called after Mueller was seen barefoot at a bar in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her 7-year-old twins, who were wearing pajamas and also barefoot. A witness who said he recognized Mueller said she was asking to bum a cigarette from other people at the bar, and that she seemed "high as a kite."

The onlooker also said that one of the twins was begging bystanders not to call the police, saying "Don't call the cops, they are going to take my mommy away!"

More: Charlie Sheen has incredibly harsh words for "extortionist" ex-fiancée

The Daily Mail reports that someone eventually called the police after the kids' nanny showed up and she and Mueller got into a fight. Before police arrived, Mueller and the kids left the bar in a black Escalade that picked them up, and then tried to check into several hotels. Around 4 a.m., they were given a room at the Skyline Inn Hotel, where she reportedly told the clerk that three women had attempted to rob her. Mueller and the kids only stayed a few hours and checked out around 6 a.m.

Reports say Mueller had told people at the bar that she was Charlie Sheen's ex-wife and handed out his number. He told reporters, "I'm just trying to get my kids home safe. I have no other details that relate to the ongoing event."

The search for Mueller and her kids was called off early in the morning after a witness reported seeing them at a car wash. The witness said that Mueller was "swinging wildly at her kids."

What might be the most bizarre turn in the story is that after all of that, police sources told The Daily Mail that they spoke to Mueller and they don't believe the children are in danger.

5 things to know about Noah Cyrus — Yes, Miley's younger sister

Did you know that Miley Cyrus had a younger sister with her own dreams of stardom? Yeah, neither did we. But she hit the ground running with her very first single, "Make Me (Cry)," which was released yesterday and sounds very similar to her famous older sister's style.

Noah is still a baby, pretty much — she's only 16 — but then again, by her age, Miley was a full-fledged star. TBD whether we'll watch her grow up in the public eye just like her sister, but in the meantime, here are five things you should know about Ms. Noah Cyrus.

1. "Make Me (Cry)" is a total earworm

Noah Cyrus video

Don't say we didn't warn you. Just try listening to this song only once. Even if you don't like it, it'll burrow its way into your brain and play over and over — and over — in your mind.

2. You'll be hearing lots more from her soon

Noah signed a six-figure record deal earlier this year, as TMZ reported. That deal included an option for a $1.5 million advance for a second album if the first goes over well. What can we say? Success runs in the family.

3. Her Instagram betrays her age

Noah Cyrus Instagram selfie

Though she may want to look all grown up, her IG is still full of fun, quirky pics just like your 16-year-old cousin would post. Then again, Miley's IG is similarly young-looking, so perhaps the Cyruses just never wanna grow up.

4. She's already teamed with a major English artist

“Make Me (Cry)” features the work of Labrinth, an amazing British artist who has teamed up with Rihanna, Usher and The Weeknd. Noah's first single already has a big gun on it — and it looks like she's not stopping any time soon.

5. She's a total daddy's girl

Here's a clip of Noah and her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, performing "Could've Been Me" at an open mic last year. So sweet — and she's so young! Hard to believe this was only a year ago, as she now seems much more grown up. We're excited to see what's in store for her next — definitely one to watch.

What'd you think of Noah Cyrus' song? Let us know in the comments.

Ashley Graham gets a Barbie in her own likeness

Ashley Graham, queen of the makeup-free selfie and pioneer of #thickthighssavelives moment, had a pinch-me moment last night when she was presented with her very own Barbie at Glamour‘s Women of the Year summit in LA. Like Graham, the Mattel toy’s got curves — and yes, her thighs touch.

“I never really thought that I didn’t look like her growing up, I just thought she was perfect,” the 28-year-old model said. “If I had a Barbie that was my size, I would have thought my size was normal. Young girls now get to grow up seeing that their bodies are normal, which I think is so empowering and encouraging to the younger generation.”

The doll, whose eyebrows aren’t bleached (whatever), is wearing an sparkly body dress from Opening Ceremony, a denim jacket from Sonia Rykiel, and Pierre Hardy boots. And although it’s not available for purchase as it’s one-of-a-kind, Mattel has expanded its offerings to include a range of body types and skin colors. As it turns out, it’s not that hard to be inclusive.

“All we did was take 360 degree photos of my body to send to them, and afterward we fleshed out some details. The color of my hair, a few details on my face like beauty marks and full eyebrows. The number one prerequisite, though, was that her thighs touched. I was like, ‘Guys, we can make this Barbie, but if her thighs don’t touch, she’s not authentic.”

Ain’t that the truth.

Apparently, Prince Harry already introduced Meghan Markle to his bro, Prince William

OK, OK — as much as I really, really want Prince Harry to be single, it seems like his relationship with Meghan Markle is actually pretty darn serious.

More: Prince Harry & Meghan Markle are keeping their love out of the public eye

The Suits actress had already met Harry's father, Prince Charles, before news outlets even caught wind of their romance. And now that they've been in the headlines for a few weeks, Harry has reportedly introduced Markle to his big bro, Prince William, too.

"William met Meghan," an insider told Us Weekly. "They got on fabulously. I'm sure Harry had been looking forward to introducing his girlfriend."

Another source added, "Naturally, William is very happy for his brother."

More: Prince Harry’s gonna get his RiRi on — by get it on, we just mean meet her

This all happened while Markle was spending a few weeks in London on "a low-key visit," as one source put it. Insiders say that while she wasn't meeting Harry's family, she was shacked up with him at Kensington Palace. While Suits remains on hiatus until January, sources say Markle and Harry will be spending even more time together — he's reportedly planning to take her on a romantic holiday vacay.

"It will be a one-week trip," a source said. "There are just a few details left to finalize."

The location is staying secret for security reasons, but the insider did insist it'll be romantic. And it's happening right after Harry wraps up a two-week official state visit to the Caribbean — maybe she's meeting him somewhere tropical?

Regardless of all this news, the two still haven't made any official appearances together, which is enough to give us all hope that they're maybe not quite as serious as they seem. Hey, a girl can dream, right?

16 ways I turned my husband's funeral into a celebration of his life

$
0
0

When I saw the article, “4 tips for throwing a successful funeral” it caused me to do a double-take. Perhaps it was the use of the word throwing as opposed to say, planning, that made it sound a little … um, inappropriate.

More: Some of us just never heal from grief

Two years ago this week, the most overwhelming aspect of my newly-widowed life was the thought of planning a service. But after all was said and done, the Celebration of Life service we threw for Hubby was just that. A celebration. And why not?

There were some tears, of course, but mostly it was a joyous occasion of family and friends gathered around some great story-telling and fabulous memories.

If these 16 tips can help ease the stress of even one funeral-planner, then my mission is accomplished.

Let people help and ask people to help.

Summer lectured, often, about how I wasn’t good at accepting gifts. Or accepting help. In order to prove her wrong, I not only learned to say, “Yes, thank you,” but I also learned to ask for help. Try it. It’s really quite painless.

Send invitations

Daughter-in-law Denise put an e-vite out on Facebook with the date, time and location. It helped to get a general idea of how many people to expect.

Get a photographer

I wasn’t sure if this was appropriate, but I asked a friend if he’d take a few pictures before, after and during the ceremony. And I was grateful to have those photos.

Create a program

We designed a simple program as a fat bookmark with a color photo at the top. A friend touched up the design and printed them on card stock, and I loved how they turned out.

Embrace décor

We were in the winter holiday season when Hubby died. Every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving, a crew decorates our church auditorium for Christmas. Which means, on the day of Gary’s celebration, trees and greenery in our church were entwined with hundreds of tiny white lights. It was almost enchanting in its simple beauty. Unexpected gift.

Create a memory table

Flowers were spread out in blue Mason and clear glass jars across tables in the foyer of our church. Our grandkids had written letters to their grandpa before he died and these were framed and set out on the table. We clothes-pinned photos onto twine attached to retro luggage, and set out items that represented Hubby’s interests: backpacks, trekking poles, show-shoes, and a camera. Family members brought some of their favorite photos of Gary, which were also scattered across the table.

Have a guest book

Our non-traditional guest book was a basket of river stones with black permanent markers for guests to write a brief note, sign, and then place in a tall glass canister. I set the canister on our fireplace hearth, and reading all the messages later was heart-warming. (Pinterest is an excellent source for decor, memory table and guest book ideas.)

More: How I learned to face my grief and love more openly

Greet guests

No one said I should do this, but I stood at the church doors greeting guests before it was time to be seated. And even though I didn’t get to everyone, I’m glad I took the time to smile, hug and reassure these friends and family.

Find the right minister

It’s nice if the officiator knows your loved one well. Our pastor and our son-in-law Josh, also a minister, shared the officiating. Josh included an early remembrance of Gary. Apparently, back when Josh called to ask our blessing to marry our daughter, Gary had responded in his typical deadpan way: “How much is this going to cost me?”

Prepare the eulogy

I drafted the highlights of Hubby’s life, and then Jeremy added his own humor and memories. It blessed my heart to hear my son talk about his father.

Share stories

I asked people from different areas of Hubby’s life—his siblings, a cousin, our hike leader, the director of the men’s rescue mission where he volunteered—to share a story or remembrance. Interestingly, all the stories connected, as if the story tellers had practiced together. A few tears, and much laughter. And laughter is good medicine for the grieving.

Film it

Josh created a slideshow video, beginning with baby photos of Gary, as a young man with his ’66 GTO, sporting a mutton chop sideburns holding our own babies; years later trimmed up and walking our daughter down the aisle toward her groom, and Hubby and me hiking the Cascades, Tetons, Rockies. It was a priceless gift.

Have music

We intentionally kept the music simple because we didn’t want the service to extend too long. Gary had a favorite song by the group, Selah: “You Raise Me Up So I Can Stand on Mountains,” which was the perfect backdrop for the slideshow of his life.

Provide housing

With friends leaving town the week of Thanksgiving, we located three large homes for overnight lodging for our out-of-town family members.

Have plenty of meals together

In one of the homes, Daughter Summer and I hosted a dinner on Friday night after Thanksgiving — roasted chicken, multiple salads, pretzel rolls, coffee and cookies — the perfect meal as family members arrived at various times throughout the evening.

On Saturday after the service, the women from our church served a lovely sit-down meal for family and a few close friends who had traveled some distance. People were lingering and catching up over good food.

Later that evening, we brought take-n-bake pizzas to a friend’s house as family, once again, congregated together, sharing stories around the large kitchen island with a college game playing out on the big screen in the living room. These meals and gathering places became over-the-top thoughtful gifts.

Write thank you cards

After all was said and done, there were dozens – dozens – of thank you notes to write: The ministers, the crew that prepared lunch, the people who let us storm their houses, the gifts and meals delivered to our home, the flowers, and to so many who sent checks that defrayed the cost of funeral home expenses.

Should you try to thank everyone? Yes. Most definitely yes. Which may seem overwhelming to the newly-widowed—it was—but I drafted a list, and plugged away at it bit-by-bit. And eventually it got done. People don’t mind if a thank you note arrives a couple weeks after the fact – they simply love hearing from you, and hearing what their part meant to you.

Go ahead and throw a celebration in memory of that most beloved person. And don’t fret if there is laughter and joy. Because hopefully, many of your memories are laughter-making and joy-filling.

Oh, and the video Josh produced? After Gary died, Josh and Summer adopted three young brothers from Uganda. Every time I visit, every time I visit, they ask if they can watch their grandpa’s video, even though they’ve never met their grandpa. It goes without saying that I love LOVE watching this video with them, again and again.

Survivor viewers rejoice after Taylor Stocker gets voted off

Forget the Millennials Vs. Gen-X theme. This episode could have easily been titled Survivor: Adam Vs. Taylor. Their war of words at Tribal Council was like watching the presidential debates all over again.

With his back against the wall, Taylor totally threw Adam under the bus with a few big lies. After admitting he had stolen food from the tribe and buried it away from camp, Taylor said Adam helped him do it. He even claimed that Adam ate some of it. While it was 100 percent true that Taylor selfishly hoarded food, his comments about Adam were false.

If that wasn't enough, Taylor tossed one more stick of dynamite on the fire by revealing Adam's secret advantage to steal somebody's Reward. "In other words, he can steal your loved ones' visit," Taylor smugly said through his careless grin. Without hesitation, Adam responded by admitting his advantage is real, but argued it wasn't a reason to vote him out.

Let's be real for a moment. Adam didn't steal anything from anybody. He stumbled upon the advantage, which will only impact a single player when he uses it to snatch their Reward. If he uses it. On the flip side, Taylor being a food thief was like giving everybody a big middle finger. Keep in mind, he actually said stealing to create his self-described bunker of food was the "best idea ever."

Him stirring up trouble at Tribal Council was a pathetic ploy to spare himself. And it failed miserably. Thank goodness. With his elimination, Twitter turned into a Survivor celebration from countless viewers.

Meanwhile, rifts are definitely opening in the Gen-X tribe. Sunday, who has been nearly invisible all season long, suddenly wanted to take control of the game. Huh? Where did she come from? She was fearful of retaliation from Jessica after casting a vote against her much earlier in the competition. As her allies were plotting to split the votes against Jay and Taylor, she told Bret her desire to take Jessica out instead. Trying to push her idea even deeper, Sunday went to the opposite alliance and discussed her concerns about Jessica with Jay. Now, she has opened the door for Jay and his crew to step inside and wiggle their way through the majority voting block. This could get interesting.

Thanksgiving break: We eat. We watch football. We eat. Maybe we get wrapped up in the madness of Black Friday bargain-hunting. We eat some more.

The kids are out of school and by the time Friday rolls around, the stir-crazy has taken up residence in your residence… and you still have three more days before you resume regularly scheduled programming.

Three. More. Days.

Post-Thanksgiving, it's tempting to give in to your inner sloth. The temperatures are cooling down. It’s cozy inside. Eating your way into a food coma goes perfectly with spacing out in front of the TV. But if you exert just a little energy to get you and your family moving, we swear your Thanksgiving break will fly by.

Here are a few ideas.

1. Find art in nature

Put on those jackets and get outside to see what you can find to make into art. Fall brings all kinds of aesthetically pleasing items you can collect for a collage or art project: leaves, acorns, twigs, buckeyes, flowers, pinecones, bark and more.

You can make some adorable twig stars, create some fun “snakes” with leaves or try your hand at making fall potpourri. For more inspiration, look to Pinterest. Here is a fun pin board that gives tons of arts and crafts ideas.

2. Go on a photo walk

Grab your cameras (or phones) and hit the streets. Explore a part of your city or town that’s known for its scenery or history. Even better? Choose a neighborhood that’s unfamiliar to you and discover it from behind the lens. If you live in the suburbs, explore an urban area. If you’re a city dweller, find some trails or hit the forest. Make a list of shots you want to take, such as a sign with the number five on it, a red door, a pile of leaves or someone riding a bicycle. You can make it competitive by setting limits on time or distance walked.

3. Feed the ducks

Get on the internet or ask family and friends for recommendations on where you might find waterfowl to watch and feed. Make sure you’re complying with any local restrictions (make sure you’re not trespassing on private property!), talk to your kids about safety and then pack up that stale bread and get outside.

4. Make a bird feeder

OK, so this is technically an indoor activity unless you live in a super-mild climate, but if weather keeps you indoors, making a bird feeder is a great way to keep hands busy. Try this fun cookie cutter bird feeder or this one that upcycles a plastic soda bottle. Pinterest (are you seeing a trend here?) has a ton of ideas for making bird feeders using items you have around your home or things you find on your nature walk.

5. Go on a bakery crawl

This is a family-friendly version of a pub crawl and an especially fun thing to do if you have out-of-town guests to entertain. Visit three or four of your favorite bakeries or patisseries and sample the taste of your town. Your city probably has a signature doughnut shop or the place to get kolaches. Discover a new favorite or enjoy and show off the best of your area.

You might need some stretchy pants and a nap, but no designated driver required.

6. Volunteer

Contact your local soup kitchen or homeless shelter to see if they need extra hands over the Thanksgiving weekend. You can also look for opportunities to help others close to home. Ask an elderly neighbor if you can help them hang their Christmas lights or if you can make a grocery store or post office run for them. Offer to help them address their holiday cards or print labels. Or have your kids ask!

More: These turkey-shaped Thanksgiving treats are hella goofy but irresistible

7. Visit your local museums

Bad weather? Maybe you don't want to be outside, but that doesn't mean you have to stay home. Check out a children’s museum (most places will be open the Saturday after Thanksgiving) and get everyone out of the house. Most local museums or art galleries will have some type of interactive exhibit or indoor play equipment if your small humans need to blow off steam.

8. Construct a bonfire

This activity is dependent on where you live and your local fire code, but if you’ve got the space to pull this off, this is an awesome way to get everyone outside and unplugged. Bonus? S'mores, of course!

9. Pile up some leaves…

…and let your kids jump in it to their hearts' content. Because why not? Yes, it's extra work to rake them up again, but so what?

10. Play ball in the house

With a little ingenuity, you can make your own indoor playground. You’ll need to contain the shenanigans to a designated area, remove bric-a-brac and possibly rearrange furniture. Here are a bunch of ideas for ball games your kids can play and go (a little) crazy without driving you crazy.

Chicago Justice has a major Law & Order connection — can you guess what it is?

There's no official premiere date just yet for Chicago Justice, but that doesn't mean we don't have any scoop to throw your way. Actually, this is something Law & Order fans will want to hear as well.

More: You can blame Voight for Antonio's Chicago P.D. exit

During NBC's One Chicago Day in October, executive producer Michael Chernuchin (who also worked on Law & Order) offered up a juicy detail about Justice's leading man, Peter Stone, played by Philip Winchester. Apparently, Peter has a familial connection to a well-known Law & Order character. To be more specific, Peter's father is a lawyer.

Hmm... who could it be? Allow Chernuchin to blow your mind. "Here’s gossip for you," he told reporters. "Were you a Law & Order fan? Do you remember Michael Moriarty? Remember what his name was? Ben Stone. [Peter Stone] is his son." Were you expecting that? For those who need a refresher, here is a photo of Moriarty as Ben Stone.

Chernuchin also gave reporters some background about Peter and Ben's history, which definitely isn't all sunshine and roses. He dished, "I’ll tell you. He rejected his dad. He had famous dad syndrome. So, he wanted to go as far away from being Ben Stone’s son as he could, so he played professional baseball. That’s our background for him. He played on the Cubbies [and] got hurt. That’s our connection and real Law & Order freaks will recognize it."

Obviously, Peter then started practicing law. More of his past will most likely be revealed throughout Season 1 and possibly in future seasons, depending on how well Justice performs. Let's be honest, when hasn't a Chicago series done well?

Whatever the case, Chernuchin said that Peter drops a line in an episode hinting at who his dad is. "He’ll say in one of the episodes, 'Yeah, my dad is back east practicing law.'" So, if you weren't an avid Law & Order watcher or have never seen an episode, now you know who Peter is referring to.

Bethenny Frankel gets serious about adopting abandoned little girl

Just call Bethenny Frankel a new-age Daddy Warbucks. At least, that's what she's hoping.

The Real Housewives of New York star and business mogul is serious about adding to her family after she was moved by a young girl's story of terrifying abandonment this week.

More: Everyone's excited for Bethenny Frankel's baby news! Well, except for her mom

Police found the 5-year-old girl at a New York bus terminal on Monday. Her father allegedly left her there an hour and a half before she was discovered. He reportedly told her that he would be back for her but then never returned. Once the police had the little girl safe and sound, she was able to tell them her address, which they followed to a Stamford, Connecticut home.

A spokesman told People, "They went in to find the young child’s mother deceased in a bedroom at that location."

The rest of the details behind this bizarre case are currently unknown, including the mother's cause of death. The girl is in Connecticut state custody while police search for her father, 32-year-old Elmer Gomez Ruono, so he can be held accountable.

Frankel, however, doesn't seem to be willing to wait that long for a conclusion to this case.

It may be easy to pass this off as "Twitter talk," but a friend of Frankel, who spoke with People, said Frankel is "definitely serious" about providing this girl with a safe home.

We've seen the snarky side of Frankel on RHONY, but thanks this holiday season we might glimpse her fierce maternal instincts as well.

Frankel has one daughter already, 6-year-old Bryn Hoppy. She faced a heated custody battle for Bryn when she and her ex-husband, Jason Hoppy, split.

Do you think the state of Connecticut should allow Frankel to give the young girl a home, at least for the holidays?

A letter to young professional women in the 'Age of Trump'

$

When I was your age, I thought it was over. My mother was a feminist, so I wanted to call myself anything but a feminist. And anyway, I seemed pretty welcome at work. Even though it was Wall Street, my analyst class was about a third women. We weren't just on our way - we'd arrived.

But then…there were the inappropriate pictures left on my desk. The guy miming a sex act when my back was turned. I wasn't given the great assignments; the more senior woman I worked with was likewise dismissed as "lightweight" (and, lest you think that might have been true, that woman was Safra Catz, now the co-President of Oracle). Then the women started to fall away in their 30s…more in their 40s. But the worst of it, I thought was over.

And now Trump has made it clear to everyone that the battle for us women is not over.

I can't stop thinking about this and what we can / should do:

Remember that gender bias in the workplace is not a thing of the past.I'm sorry if I didn't act when I should have. I thought we had left sexism behind us by the time I was in more senior roles. After all, we had complaint hotlines and diversity plans and requirements for diverse slates of candidates for every job. But now I'm remembering one of the members of the senior leadership team who would kiss younger women on the cheek at the beginning of meetings. Creepy, right? I now wonder what was being said when I wasn't in that room.

Ask tough questions, and call the guys out when necessary. I recently asked my best guy friend: "Do guys really talk like Donald Trump and Billy Bush behind closed doors?" His response: "No, but…" And the "but" was that the conversations are more along the lines of: "Boy, she has great legs," or "she's a looker" or "Whew. Wouldn't touch her with a ten-foot pole." When I asked him how he responded to this, he said he didn't say anything; after all, he has to work with these folks.

But so do we. And breaking us down to our body parts or our appearance dehumanizes us in some way. Maybe it's only in some small way. But it's clear that for some years, we (and by we, I mean I) were likely too complacent about the inevitability of gender progress in the workplace and relaxed perhaps just a bit too much.

If you're in a bad work situation, it's ok to quit. So many women think that it's a "failure" if you quit your job; and you know how hard we females take failure. But sometimes it's not us: it's them.

I recently left the board of a non-profit that I LOVE. I had been on it for years (and years). At nearly every meeting I asked how much we were spending on our investment managers, in comparison to the return we were getting. Meeting after meeting I was told that the answer was complex, it was hard to calculate, it would take a lot of work - and why did it matter anyway? It was really the net returns that matter, regardless of how much we paid for them. And then, last spring, before I could bring up the topic, one of the men did; and all the other guys eagerly agreed with him, that we need to keep an eye on fees because those are really all we can control.

I quit the next week.

Life is too short, and I can have a lot more impact with the week-a-year I get back instead of being ignored in meetings.

I know not everyone is in the position to quit; I wasn't earlier in my career. So the onus is also on those of us who are more senior to be more supportive of women who leave these situations. I am hopeful that an outcome of this election will be greater understanding of this.

Get yourself a senior, successful - preferably female - mentor, who can help you navigate the politics of your company. This includes the gender politics. Can't find one on your own? Speak to HR about helping you find one; this is their job, after all.

Your company doesn't have a senior, successful female? Get the hell out of there.

Do your best to make sure that your success is quantified. Be it a sales goal, a client satisfaction rating, an output metric, a quality target. Numbers count here because they're black-and-white, cut-and-dried. Were you successful or not? I recommend this even if you work in a "normal" company, because implicit gender biases and expectations still exist for all of us.

Think about starting your own thing. This is what's exciting; we have the ability to start our own businesses today, in a way we didn't in the past. Why not take our marbles to our own playgrounds and build great businesses and cultures? Our mothers couldn't do this because the cost was so high - but the costs of everything-about-starting-a-business, including technology, people (i.e., freelancers), real estate (co-working spaces) and support services are coming down. And then no one can relegate you to the less-interesting jobs.

I am going to go out of my way to support other women. It's clear now: we can't do this alone. Another woman who is promoted or celebrated or funded clears the way for another. I am actively looking to buy from women-owned businesses, which is much easier these days - Outdoor VoicesNasty Gal and Ellevest, a digital investment platform for women, I know I'm a broken record on this topic. But men invest to a greater extent than women do, and it costs us. Indeed, I believe investing is the money is the real key to gender equality.

Fuller House may have to face the fact that Michelle is never coming home

Looks like the Olsen twins will still be the only original Full House cast members not returning for the Netflix spinoff Fuller House in its second season.

Lori Loughlin told the Huffington Post that Ashely and Mary Kate Olsen were not a part of Season 2.

More: Uncle Joey has a Fuller House family and it's not the one you've met — yet

"They’re not on Fuller House for a second season either. I’m not in any of those negotiations, nor am I privy to any information, only that I can say they’re not on again for a second season," Loughlin revealed.

She added, "I’m sure they would more than welcome them back if they wanted to [do it], but it’s been great for all of us to be reunited. Who would have thought after over 25 years that we would actually be back shooting on the same soundstage that we did all those years ago?"

In the original series, the Olsen twins took on the same role of Michelle, the youngest Tanner family daughter. Both girls moved away from acting in their 20s, which could explain their hesitation to appear in the series.

OK, so now that we've got the bad news out of the way, the good news is that Loughlin was also able to share some tidbits from Season 2. She said that while she, Bob Saget, John Stamos and Dave Coulier only did three episode in Season 1, the characters will actually have a story arc in Season 2.

Tony Bennett just took the term "cradle robbing" to an uncomfortable level

We're big believers that age doesn't have a number, but Tony Bennett took his love story a little too far.

More: Lady Gaga dishes on friendship with jazz star Tony Bennett

In his new book Just Getting Started, Bennett revealed he met his third wife, Susan Benedetto, for the first time while she was still in the womb. He, on the other hand, was 40 years old.

In the book, Bennett recounts the memory, explaining that Benedetto's parents, Marion and Dayl Crow, were huge fans, who attended a New York City show in 1966. They had the opportunity to go backstage, meet Bennett and pose for a picture with him during the concert.

"As fate would have it, Marion was pregnant at the time with … Susan!" Bennett writes in his book. "It’s a photo we all laugh about, knowing the incredible turn of events that followed.”

Bennett then met Benedetto for the second time when she was 19. She had followed in her parents' footsteps as a die-hard Bennett fan. She, like her parents, met him backstage after a show.

"It tickled me that someone of her age was so devoted to my music," Bennett writes. "I not only agreed to say hello to her backstage but asked her to be my date for the evening, and that’s how it all really began, foreshadowed by a backstage photo taken in 1966!"

The two are clearly doing something right! Despite their 40 year age gap, the two have been happily married since 2007.

Smoky Eye looks you can create with Urban Decay’s Naked palette

In case you’ve been living under a beauty-free rock, you’ll know that Urban Decay’s Naked eyeshadow palettes are pretty much the Air Jordans of makeup, with fans wildly pre-purchasing and literally lining up to snag one (or three) as soon as they’re released.

With a dozen richly-pigmented shades, these babies are pretty much fire when it comes to crafting the perfect neutral eye, so you can imagine how psyched we are that the “Smoky” Naked palette includes a range of light and dark colors to create all kinds of contoured looks–so much so that we went a little wild with it ourselves, creating a bunch of smoky looks on our gorgeous intern, Katie.

Check them out below, and—once you get your hands on your palette—don’t hold back!

The Gold And The Beautiful

The Gold And The Beautiful

Gold is a flattering shade on most women, and you get three gold and bronze shades in this palette. Brushing the palest gold, Dirtysweet, all over the lid and in the inner corners, we blended medium bronze shade, Radar, from the middle to the outer corner of the eye. Lastly, Whiskey was used again to line the lashes, slightly winging out at the corner for a soft cat-eye.

Gritty Kitty

Gritty Kitty

If you’re not into wearing an unabashedly pink shade on your eyes, High is the perfect rosy champagne shimmer in this palette. Using this pink champagne color all over the lid and in the inner corner of the eyes, we blended Smolder, a metallic eggplant color into the crease and under the lower lashes for a bit of jewel-toned soot, making this potentially girly eye look into something more grounded.

Smoke On Mirrors
Image: StyleCaster

Smoke On Mirrors

Naked Smoky gives you three perfect silver/gray tones to create a quintessential smoky look. Without going too hard on the smoke, opting to play with texture instead, we ombré’d Slanted, a metallic gunmetal gray into Dagger, the deeper gray with a slight shimmer. Dagger was blended into a dramatic but soft wing shape going outwards, and swooped down to line the lower lashes. We dabbed more of Slanted onto the center of the eyelid as well as the center of the lower lash line to give the look a bit of metallic dimension. When you apply light-reflecting shimmer and gloss to the area of the eye that protrudes the furthest out (like the center of the eyelid) it makes your eyes appear rounder and deeper by dimension.

Cat Power

Cat Power

A smoky cat eye is a must with this palette. With a glitter-speckled iridescent cool bronze (or warm silver, depending on how you look at it) shadow like Armor, this takes the classic smudged cat-eye to a new years eve party. Combust, the matte pale rose color was dusted on the entire lid, with Armor blended into the crease and extended into a pointed shape, defining the outer eye corner. Black Market, the deep shimmery black shade, was painted along the lash lines with a flat eyeliner brush and winged out in the outer corners for a smoky cat eye effect.

Alchemy Olympics

Alchemy Olympics

We love a good mixed metals makeup look and we love an excuse for Cleopatra-inspired makeup. This gold and silver layered look is pretty bold without looking so heavy. Luckily, it’s dead easy to do as well. Just dust Dirtysweet all over the upper lid, and use Slanted to line your upper and lower lash lines, extending it outwards for a dramatic wing. Voila!

The ’90s Called
Image: StyleCaster

The ’90s Called

High shine and moody shadows were all the rage in ’90s beauty looks. We’re incorporating both into this smoky eye. With High brushed all over the eye lid, dipping into the inner corners, we balanced that out with Password, a matte warm slate gray blended in the creases and outerwards. Upper and lower lash lines were lined with Whiskey for soft definition, creating a bold thick winged look that’s dramatic without resorting to lots of black.

Oil Slick
Image: StyleCaster

Oil Slick

Going for the bold, we used the deepest and highest impact shades in this palette to create this gothy oil slick look. Using Smolder on the entire eyelid and creating shadow with Black Market, we blended the darkest shade outwards into a smoky wing. We used both shades to line the lower lash line. When you layer two shades to line your lashes, the result is slightly more dimensional than one flat color. Armor was dabbed in the inner corners for a high shine highlight.

AHS: Roanoke's season finale left too many loose ends

American Horror Story: Roanoke's season finale left a lot to be desired, mostly because there wasn't really a conclusion to anything that happened in the season.

More: I refuse to say I'm disappointed with AHS: Roanoke's big twist

I mean, everyone died... so there's that. But we've known that all the characters were going to die since the middle of the season. The problem with a supernatural show is that death is not the end so you can't count all your characters dying as a definitive wrap.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for some questions being left unanswered. Leaving some room for mystery is just a sign of good writing, but Roanoke left us with very few answers. Namely, all of the ghosts were just left behind. The characters didn't even attempt an exorcism or something to try to get rid of the evil spirits.

Before Lee decided to sacrifice herself for Flora, couldn't she have at least suggested they try to find peace for Priscilla, rather than one of them just agreeing to live in hell?

I also took issue with the interview format of the finale with Shelby/Audrey/Lana aka. Sarah Paulson reprising her Asylum character after already playing two different characters in Roanoke. It felt like we've been here done that while Lana talked with Lee.

More: American Horror Story should be renamed American Slaughter Story

Of course, the shooting was a surprising and too-real twist that had me thinking Ryan Murphy's message of this season could be the effects of the changing tide of entertainment on the world. All of the reality TV and social media hoopla can never lead to good things, especially in the world of American Horror Story.

When I think of the deeper meaning like that, I do find a solid appreciation for Roanoke. I just wish it hadn't gotten so bogged down with so many shifting characters, storylines and murders that I stopped caring to keep them straight. Because they were all going to die anyways so what was the point?

All in all, the story did boil down to Lee's love for Flora. Just because she wasn't the best mother didn't mean she couldn't do the right thing for Flora when it mattered most.

More: AHS: Roanoke seems to be one big, negative message against law enforcement

There are already all sorts of theories about how Flora may return in future seasons. Also, the Roanoke mansion could also pop up again. Just because Murphy hasn't given us a solid wrap to all those murder-y ghosts doesn't mean he can't deliver on it later.

Do you think Ryan Murphy should incorporate a grown-up Flora into American Horror Story Season 7?

6 coping techniques I use to manage my seasonal affective disorder

$

0

I have always suffered a bit of the blues in winter, but the winter of 2013-2014 put me over the edge. That was a horrible winter. We had 26 days between December and February where the thermometer reading was below zero. Going anywhere was a chore and took every ounce of energy. I wore what felt like 50 pounds of clothing, my eyelashes would freeze, and I had to leap snow piles on city street corners and slip slide on un-shoveled sidewalks to get to the office. It seemed like spring would never arrive. My mood and energy level that winter were abysmal. Because of that, I did a little research and read up on a condition called seasonal affective disorder.

More: What if we tweeted our mental health issues like we do our head colds?

Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that is related to the change of seasons. It generally begins and ends around the same time every year. For most people it begins in the fall, continues through the winter, and ends in the spring. While people with SAD may exhibit the general signs of depression such as feeling blue and having low energy, there are some specific symptoms of fall-winter SAD including irritability, hypersensitivity to rejection, leaden feeling in the arms and legs, oversleeping, craving carbohydrates and weight gain.

The experts think winter-fall SAD is caused by the lack of sunlight, which changes our circadian rhythms, can drop serotonin levels, and alter our melatonin levels. It's interesting because I have always been sensitive to light. I remember as a child trying to go to bed at 8:00 p.m. in the summer and I could not sleep for anything because it was still light out. So given my sensitivity to light, it is not surprising that I have a sensitivity when there is not enough light.

I generally notice that my symptoms start in late September or October as the daylight gets shorter, the angle of the sun changes, and it gets colder outside. Once the time changes back to standard time, I really notice the symptoms because I rarely see the sun. However, once March comes and the daylight is noticeably longer and daylight savings time returns, I notice a huge improvement in my mood and overall energy level.

Because I have realized this about myself, and talked to a few professionals about it, I try to get ahead of it in September and set up some techniques to help me throughout the winter. If you think you suffer from fall-winter SAD, you should definitely talk to a professional if you are feeling depressed, and whether your symptoms are severe or mild, here are some things that might help:

Light therapy

Light therapy involves sitting in front of a special light box so you are exposed to bright light. The light therapy mimics the outdoor light, so it tricks your brain and causes changes to your brain chemicals to improve mood. This is usually the first line of treatment for SAD and interestingly one I have not tried yet. This year, maybe this week even, I am ordering a light therapy box.

Supplements

There are supplements that you can take to help offset some of the symptoms of SAD. I started back up with my Vitamin D supplement in September. Those of us living in northern climates are often deficient in our Vitamin D because we do not get enough sunlight, especially during the winter. However, even if you live in a more temperate climate, or for us northerners wear sunscreen in the summer, you may still have deficient Vitamin D levels. In order for your body to make Vitamin D, large amounts of bare skin has to be exposed to the sun when it is high in the sky. So get your levels checked. Vitamin D is important for strong bones and a healthy immune system. According to the Cleveland Clinic there are also studies that indicate that Vitamin D can help certain cancers and autoimmune conditions. Vitamin D can also also help fight depression.

Exercise

Exercise is always a mood elevator that releases endorphins. If you struggle with weight gain in the winter (which makes you more depressed), exercise can help keep the pounds off. I always find that moving my body whether through a hard interval training class, yoga, pilates or even a walk, makes my mood better.

More: Why I overshare about my mental illness

Maintain healthy eating habits

I try and eat a diet of protein, healthy fats and vegetables and avoid most sugar and carbohydrates. However, SAD makes you crave all of the carbs and sugar. And eating carbs and sugar makes me feel yucky. So try and maintain the same healthy eating habits all year-round.

Get outside

Even if it is cold, get outside at some point during the day, preferably when there is light. Unfortunately, I do not always get to do this. Around the winter solstice, I am going to the office in the dark and coming home in the dark, so I do not get outside during daylight much. However, as long as the weather is moderate my husband and I still and try and give our dog Gatsby at least a short walk after work. Even when its cold, the fresh air feels refreshing and clears your sluggish brain.

Take a vacation

If you can afford it, take a vacation at some point in the winter. This tip is often elusive for me. It's hard to get away both from a time and money perspective. However, my husband and I did discuss it last February when I was not doing super great, and we agreed that this year we will look into it if even if for just a long weekend. For me a winter vacation means going someplace warm. However, if you are a skier I am sure that type of vacation can help with symptoms since you are outside and active.

And when worse comes to worse, remember that spring always shows up! Let me know if you have any good techniques for coping with SAD or the winter blues.
