6 reminders for moms on how to treat your pregnant friend

$

I call it postpartum amnesia — the phenomenon whereby a woman endures nine months of intense emotional changes followed by the incredible experience of childbirth, and then gradually forgets the entire ordeal and proceeds to behave to her pregnant friends as if she has no idea what they’re going through. Maybe it’s the sleep deprivation or light-headedness from a diet of wine, coffee and Cheerios, but women who have had children within the past decade seem to forget the Golden Rule as soon as they’re done being pregnant. If you suspect you might have forgotten what it’s like, here’s a refresher on best practices on being friends with pregnant women.

1. Do not show her pre-pregnancy pictures of herself

Social media makes sharing memories so easy these days, but there are times that pregnant women just don’t care to recall. Like that picture from five years ago of her bachelorette weekend at the beach. You may think it's cute that TimeHop is reminding you of "such a great weekend," but she just thinks you are trying to remind her that she won't be having a vacation, that figure or a rum drink in a coconut any time in the foreseeable future. No one in her third trimester of pregnancy wants to see a picture of themselves 30 pounds ago in a bikini. Save these little trips down memory lane for when she can once again button her jeans.

More: 10 things you can say to a pregnant woman

2. Do not rehash your own birth story in great detail

Giving birth is a very unique and monumental experience, and also entirely personal. So while your friend may want to hear the overall gist of your story, she probably doesn’t want an hour-by-hour account of your dilation. Unless you can narrow it down to the concise details that might be relevant to her in any way, don’t make her spend the next half-hour of her life hearing how many laps you walked around the maternity floor. Your job is simply to ask how she’s doing. If you still need to talk about yourself, call your mom. She’s contractually obligated to listen to your entire birth story.

3. Do not tell her to “stock up on sleep now”

Unless she’s been living at the bottom of a well, your friend has a pretty good idea that babies don’t sleep through the night and mothers are tired (see: every other mommy meme on the internet involves coffee). She has been practicing for the coming exhaustion by getting up three times a night to pee, not being able to sleep on her back or stomach for months and having raging indigestion at 2 a.m., so telling her to “stock up on sleep now” is both entirely impossible and extremely annoying (which you would know if you hadn’t completely erased your memory of pregnancy).

4. Do not tell her any story about anything about childbirth that ends badly

Your pregnant friend hasn’t slept comfortably in months and you know she’s got more hormones coursing through her than a junior high locker room, so it’s safe to say she’s probably already pretty freaked out. Therefore, any story that doesn’t end with a mother taking her baby home from the hospital in one of those striped blankets and a tiny hat is completely off-limits. What she doesn’t know can’t keep her up at night, which you may recall is already somewhat of a problem.

5. Do not comment on her growing bump

Remember when you couldn’t fit in your rings, tie your shoes or take a deep breath? You may mean well but "you're ready to pop” just means “fat and tired-looking” to her. And for the love of all things holy, never ask a pregnant woman if she’s having twins! She owns a mirror; she doesn’t need to see her silhouette on your face. “You look fabulous” is the only thing you need to say… and after the baby’s born, you can come over and help her delete all the pictures of her at her baby shower from her computer, if not from her mind.

6. Do not give your honest opinion of the baby’s name

Naming a child is a very personal, intimate decision for the parents. Suggestions and commentary are almost universally unwanted by new parents, even from well-meaning friends. So if a friend who has, until now, seemed perfectly normal decides to name her child after her favorite fruit and her spirit animal, do not under any circumstances tell her this is ridiculous. Your job is to smile politely and stencil Kumquat Dolphin on a picture frame. Even if she later regrets this name choice, she will never forgive you for not liking the name in the first place, so just act like you love it and try to find a nickname that won’t get the kid beat up on the playground.

Once your friend has given birth and developed her own case of postpartum amnesia, you are welcome to discuss any and all topics related to the realities of childbirth and parenthood. Until such time, just tell her it’s a piece of cake… oh, and bringing her a piece of cake is a good idea too!

Here's what you need to know about a retained placenta

In a recent episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim Kardashian was told by doctors that a third pregnancy could be life-threatening for her due to the possibility of a condition known as a retained placenta. Kardashian had placenta problems during her first pregnancy (with daughter North, 3) and after delivery, she had surgery to remove a piece of placenta from her uterus.

More: 8 things every woman should know about endometrial cancer

1. What is a retained placenta?

In most labors, the placenta — the organ responsible for providing the baby with oxygen and nutrients in utero — is expelled by the woman's body within 30 minutes of delivery. In some cases, the placenta (or a part of it) remains in the womb for more than 30 minutes after delivery. According to the World Health Organization guide, "Managing complications in pregnancy and childbirth," this is known as a retained placenta. In developed countries, it affects around 3 percent of vaginal deliveries.

2. Are all retained placentas the same?

No. The most common of the three types is placenta adherens. This happens when the uterus doesn't contract enough to expel the placenta, and it remains attached to the uterine wall. The other types of retained placenta are trapped placenta and placenta accreta. Trapped placenta happens when the placenta does detach from the uterus, but remains in the body. Typically, this is due to the cervix beginning to close before the removal of the placenta. Placenta accreta happens when the placenta attached to the muscular layer of the uterine wall instead of the uterine lining, which leads to severe bleeding and can make delivery very difficult. Blood transfusions or a hysterectomy may be required if bleeding cannot be stopped.

3. What are the risks of a retained placenta?

If untreated, a retained placenta can lead to a severe infection and excessive blood loss, which can be life-threatening for the mother.

More: Good news (for once) for older pregnant women

4. Are certain women more at risk of a retained placenta?

Women over the age of 35, women who go into labor before the 34th week of pregnancy, women who have a prolonged first or second stage of labor (the expulsion of the placenta is considered the third stage of labor), and women who are having a stillborn baby are at a greater risk of a retained placenta. And if you've had a placenta problem during a previous pregnancy, you may be at increased risk of it happening again.

5. How can a retained placenta be treated?

It's crucial to remove the entire placenta from the uterus, which may be done by a doctor by hand or using medication to either relax or contract the uterus. Breastfeeding may also be effective, as it releases the hormone oxytocin in the body, which makes the uterus contract. A last resort is surgery to remove the placenta or any missing parts of it.

6. Can a retained placenta be prevented?

If a woman is at risk of a retained placenta, there are several steps her doctor can take to reduce that risk. Medication to make the uterus contract and release the placenta, such as Pitocin (oxytocin), can be prescribed. Controlled cord traction can be applied by the doctor, which involves clamping the baby's umbilical cord then pulling on the cord while applying pressure to encourage the placenta to come out after the baby is born. Additionally, the doctor can use their hands to stabilize the uterus, while applying controlled cord traction.

Ultimately, a retained placenta is a rare complication. But as with all aspects of pregnancy, knowledge is the key to remaining in control and making the best decisions for you and your baby.

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green have always kept their family life pretty private, but even more so since Journey was born. Fox actually filed for divorce in 2015, but at her next public appearance, she was visibly pregnant with Journey, and she made no more moves to advance her divorce petition.

"Brian and Megan are living together in Malibu with their boys," a source told People magazine back in July, just weeks before Journey was born. "They have been getting along and seem very happy."

Survivor's Taylor Stocker reveals his strategy was to act like a 'dumb snowboarder'

Although many Survivor viewers and fellow castaways believe Taylor Stocker was a terrible strategic gamer, he argues otherwise. In our one-on-one interview with Stocker, he claimed to be playing harder than anybody actually realized because he was busy pretending to be a "dumb" snowboarder. He also offered his response to Figgy's negative commentary about their post-Survivor breakup and revealed which two castaways he was planning to bring to the final Tribal Council. And what about stealing his tribe's food? Does he feel bad about it today? All that and so much more below. Enjoy!

SheKnows: You didn't seem too surprised by your elimination. Did you know it was coming?

Taylor Stocker: Yeah. I pretty much knew I was on the chopping block.

SK: What made you realize it was you being targeted instead of Jay?

TS: Going into it, I had a conversation with Hannah when she was coming off the beach. I said, "Are there votes coming my way tonight?" She said, "I think you know who to vote for." To me, that meant that I was supposed to write down Jay's name and he was supposed to write down my name. That means they were going to split the votes between us. That was my indication. Everyone is telling me that it's Jay. Then when I have a conversation with Jay, everybody was telling him it's me. When your name is not being dropped to your face and you're being told too much, you start to smell fish.

SK: You didn't go down without a fight, though. Your exit was very memorable when you told everybody how you snatched food from the tribe and then revealed Adam's secret Reward-stealing advantage. What was it like for you to watch that moment back on TV?

TS: It was pretty hysterical. I loved watching Adam get dragged through the mud. If I'm gonna get dragged through the mud, I'm gonna drag you with me, man. It was a fun Tribal. My idea of fun is different than a lot of other people. [Laughs.] It was quite entertaining. I had a conversation with Jay prior to Tribal just talking about if it was a better idea to drop the bomb at camp or at Tribal. We thought it would be best to do it at Tribal if it were to work at all [to change votes] because Adam wouldn't have time to scramble. We just kind of watched him scramble at Tribal. Obviously, the vote didn't go the way we wanted it to. That would've been epic if it did.

SK: The relationship you had with Adam was clearly strained. Was your dislike for him based solely on Figgy getting voted off or was there something more we didn't see?

TS: Adam and I get along great in the real world, but in the game, it was horrible. Adam is a total superfan of the show. I'm a fan of the show, but definitely not the level that he's at. Even when he wasn't talking about strategy in this game, he was talking about strategy in past games. I was just wanting to eat some rice in the morning and relax. [Laughs.] He's a great guy and I love him.

SK: So there are no hard feelings?

TS: No, no. We're cool.

SK: You made the argument that Adam's possession of a Reward-stealing advantage was a more dangerous secret to keep from the tribe compared to your actions of stealing food. In reality, your secret impacted everybody in the game directly. Do you agree your secret may have been worse?

TS: No. I think stealing the food itself wasn't really the problem. It was revealing my cards of how I was playing. Adam and I exchanged secrets. I'm scheming, I'm stealing food, I'm hiding it and eating at night while everybody's sleeping for multiple nights. On top of that, I was holding these secrets about Adam and scheming against everyone else with Adam. When all that information came out, they probably looked at me and said, "He's a big liability. It's not OK to keep him around anymore." I don't think it was actually the physical food that people were upset about. It was more the game play.

SK: Do you have any remorse for stealing the food? Did it bother you at all?

TS: No. [Laughs.] A lot of that is just kind of my character of just trying to have fun and do something that seemed impossible to do. No, I have no remorse. I thought if I wanted to make a lot of good friends then I should go on Big Brother and we can all hug it out. We're here to play Survivor, so I'm gonna scam anybody I have to scam.

SK: Many of the previously eliminated contestants have said you aren't playing whatsoever. People like Michelle and Figgy told me your head wasn't in the game and argued you would never deserve to win this season. What's your response? Was your head in the game?

TS: I think my way of playing the game is different than everyone else. I'm pretending to be this dumb person. Even taking it a step further where a situation that I'm in an alliance with Jess [Figgy] and Jay. These are people with huge personalities that just stick out. They're doing all the work and I'm just sailing along right behind them. If we get in a tight spot, their heads are on the chopping block because they're so loud. I often, even in life, think the same thing. If I know someone's going to do a lot of the work for me, then you just tail behind them. They're on the chopping block. Fig was the casualty of that aspect in the Takali tribe. When I get the chance to strategize, then I definitely do it. A lot of times I was playing up this dumb snowboarder that sucks at puzzles. Some of these things Michelle took the fall for being a puzzle wizard. I'm extremely good at puzzles. I think everyone that gets on the show are better than the average because they're on Survivor. I could see why some people wouldn't think I was playing the game, but I also got farther than a lot of people. That shows something.

Image: CBS

SK: So what was your end-game plan? Who did you want to go to the final Tribal Council against?

TS: Obviously, I'm bringing Adam. Definitely not Zeke. Maybe Hannah and Sunday just because they're very low-key personalities. Adam had made a lot of plans up until now and hardly any of them have worked. The Figgy vote was in his hands anyway. It was handed to him on a platter. None of his strategizing has worked up until this point. Maybe behind the scenes, he is doing a ton of work and it is working, but what we've seen so far is just a lot of work that's non-productive.

SK: No Jay in the finals with you?

TS: I love Jay, but he's like me. I wouldn't take myself to the finals [laughs] so that's not gonna happen. I love him, but we would have to go at each other at some point if I was still in the game.

SK: When I interviewed Figgy after she was eliminated, she didn't have the kindest things to say about you. She said that you guys aren't friends anymore and have stopped talking despite having seemingly fallen in love on the show. Have you read any of her comments and how do you react to her thoughts?

TS: I read, I think, two of them. I kind of assumed what the other ones said. [Laughs.] If she wants to go out of her way to bash me, she can do that. I'm not going to do that. I'm not gonna return that favor. She said she learned new things about me. I learned some new things about me when I got out of the game as well. We broke up because I wanted to do what's best for my family. I didn't think keeping her in my life was going to do any good things for my family. A lot like her getting voted out in the game was a lot like us breaking up in life. I understand why she's really upset about that, but I am just trying to do what's best for my family. I hope one day she'll come to grips with that.

TS: Maybe friends at some point. There's no animosity on my side, so it's definitely in her court.

SK: Did you really fall in love with her while the game was underway?

TS: I think it was a really strong connection. I think she would say she had the same thing toward me because we are extremely alike in a lot of ways. Over time, I think that would possibly fade out and we would be bad for each other. Encouraging this craziness is just too much. I do respect her as a person. Yep.

SK: A lot of viewers celebrated your elimination on social media accompanied with nasty words about you. Has it been hard for you to read the hate?

TS: Haters are gonna hate. I'm not gonna sit there and mope about someone saying something stupid. These people are behind the computer screen and typing away. I know that none of those people would say those things to my face because something bad would probably happen. [Laughs.] That would be awkward. It doesn't really faze me. I live up here in north Idaho, and I haven't been affected whatsoever by any of the stuff that's been on social media. No one really cares up here. I'm pretty sure people don't have TVs up here. I have never been once confronted about allegations toward me or them hating me. I just kind of stay away from that stuff.

I applied when I was there with some snowboarding clips and crazy stuff to explain my personality. I then went through the whole application process.

Did Kate Middleton recommend this 'organic Botox' to Michelle Obama?

What are the chances that Michelle Obama is taking skin care tips from Kate Middleton? Slim to none, we'd say. But a new Daily Mail post claims that FLOTUS' makeup artist Carl Ray told them Middleton "recommended £43 ($54) Biotulin Supreme Skin Gel to Michelle — a non-injectable 'organic Botox.'" Hmm.

First and foremost: Doubt it. "Michelle Obama has been using this organic Botox gel regularly on the recommendation of Kate Middleton," Ray supposedly told a publication we've never heard of, Celebrities Style, according to the Daily Mail. And though he allegedly called the gel 'unbelievable' for combating wrinkles, a quick look at Amazon disproves that theory.

"I purchased it believing I wasn't asking to much of it just wanting it to lessen one wrinkle/line on forehead but it made no difference at all and gave me lumpy spots instead," one user wrote, adding, "Very disappointed."

"This product is nothing like Botox," another unsatisfied customer wrote. "You just get a slight tightening of the skin but not even noticeable wanted the fine lines around my eyes to be less noticeable. No one has seen anything different with my face."

Honestly, we're not sure why the Daily Mail just published this "news," because a quick search reveals that this weird item about off-brand "organic Botox" actually first surfaced in September 2015 in such "reputable" media outlets such as The Inquisitr. Who can say why this pesky "beauty tip" is making the rounds yet again, but one thing we can say with certainty: Don't hightail it over to Amazon to purchase this questionable gel. If you're worried about wrinkles, stick with what works.

Just because I'm proudly Jewish doesn't mean I don't love Christmas songs

$

I didn’t grow up in a religious home. I knew I was Jewish and knew it was important that I know that. Together with my parents, I came to America as a refugee from the former Soviet Union in 1979. The anti-Semitism drove my parents out. They wanted to live in a country where their religion didn't prevent them from going to college or getting a job or procuring an apartment.

More: My terrible morning sickness still ruins my appetite six years later

In New York City, home to over one million Jews, my parents felt free to wear Star of David and Chai necklaces but never stepped foot inside a synagogue unless it was mandated for a Bar Mitzvah or wedding. When it came time for the December holidays at school and kids did the “Are you Christmas or Chanukah” survey, I was proudly “Team Chanukah.”

In junior high school, I was in the chorus for two years (got in by singing the theme to the Brady Bunchand had the opportunity to perform at the Staten Island Mall for the holidays, the iconic Pan Am Building (now the MetLife building), as well as Carnegie Hall. In those years, I learned dozens of Christmas songs and loved them all, excited to be able to sing along to a month’s worth of radio as I wiped down counters at the family donut shop.

Initially, I felt a sense of guilt for loving the Christmas songs so much, almost like I violated my religion. I didn’t keep kosher so eating BLT sandwiches never felt as much as a breach of religion as how much these Christmas carols could penetrate my soul; "Ave Maria" and "Silent Night" get me every single time.

Last week my daughter came home from her musical theater class telling me they were working on a Christmas song, “Don’t worry mom, it doesn’t have any Jesus or Santa in it, it’s just about winter.”

“Oh that’s OK,” I said, “I love Christmas songs!”

“You know,” my husband chimed in, “many Christmas songs were actually written by Jews. The song you’re doing, Winter Wonderland was, as well as Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow, and one of the most famous ones, White Christmas, which is the best-selling single ever.”

More: I have hypochondria and it's not the joke people think it is

“You know, our teachers asked if there is anyone in the class who didn’t celebrate Christmas and I raised my hand,” my daughter explained. “Then she said, ‘Really? No one in your family celebrates Christmas? Not even your parents or grandparents?’ She was so shocked and I said, ‘No, no one at all.’”

I laughed. It’s funny in 2016, living in such an urban multicultural area, with plenty of Jews, there are still people shocked to learn Jesus' birthday doesn't mean anything to us. We don’t feel nostalgic for three wise men or yearn to sing hymns or gather around the table, heads bowed for grace. It’s just a day off, no more sacred to us than Columbus Day or President's Day.

The songs, though often deity specific, cross religions and cultures by creating a feeling of camaraderie, warmth, celebration, and joy. I say cheers to Christmas carols.

Thanks, Kaley Cuoco — now I want a boob job

Plastic surgery can be truly empowering when it's done for the right reasons. The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco is a perfect example of that.

More: Kaley Cuoco's boyfriend (aka her 'horse guy') might just be her lobster

In the latest issue of Women's Health, Cuoco reveals that she's had several procedures done, including nose and boob jobs.

"Years ago, I had my nose done. And my boobs — best thing I ever did," she says. "Recently I had a filler in a line in my neck I’ve had since I was 12."

Cuoco says having those few surgeries has helped her feel more confident about herself, something that's never a bad thing.

"As much as you want to love your inner self... I’m sorry, you also want to look good. I don’t think you should do it for a man or anyone else, but if it makes you feel confident, that’s amazing," she says.

More: Kaley Cuoco's apology also has an important message to fans

She also explains how aging has changed her body and the habits she needs to have to keep herself healthy and looking her best.

"The bottom line is I’m not 21 anymore, so it used to be so easy and I didn’t have to do as much," she says. "But you’re getting a little older and I’ve got to cut things out. It’s important, it’s now part of my day. Working out is part of my day, eating right is part of my day."

And as far as she's concerned, while plastic surgery can be a great confidence-booster, there's no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to having a healthy, fit body.

"I don’t think success comes overnight," she explains. "I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and it’s been a long road. If you really want it you’ve got to go for it, but that’s for anything... it takes a lot of work and a lot of drive and a lot of patience."

10 women share the moment they fell in love with themselves

$
0
0

There comes a point in every woman's life when she finds her own enough-ness — when she realizes she doesn't need validation from a relationship, or anywhere for that matter. It's the watershed moment when she falls in love, not with someone else or with the idea of someone, but with herself.

If you're not there yet, don't worry... you'll get there. We each come to that place in our own special time and, well, it's always worth the wait. In the meantime, you can glean inspiration from the following real women who shared that turning point in their lives.

1. With age, comes wisdom

"For me, the turning point came when I hit the age of 30. I left all problems from my 20s with my 20s. I felt lighter, happier — just all-around good. From where I was then to where I am now, words can't describe the change in the way I feel about myself. I don't care what people think now... I'm always gonna do me and be me." — Quista D.

More: What it's really like to be in a dom/sub relationship

2. A work in progress

"For me, self-love is an ongoing process. At work and school, I am known as the 'girl who never stops smiling,' even in pain and heartache. Laughter is the only way I feel like I can breathe sometimes. But there are two quotes that have really helped me grow in my own sense of self-worth. 'Sometimes you've got to be able to listen to yourself and be OK with no one else understanding,' and 'When I look back on my life, I see pain, mistakes, and heartache. When I look in the mirror, I see strength, learned lessons, and pride in myself.' Those have become my mantras of self-love." — Susan P.

3. Build others up

"I think a watershed moment for me was after a home run derby in a softball tournament when I was in high school. I had always excelled at sports but never realized the impact my game had on those around me, until that day. After the derby, a group of young tee ball players (girls and boys) came up to me and asked for my autograph. I had never once thought about the eyes watching me or the difference I could make until then. It was from that moment on that I made sure I was a positive role model for young female athletes. Knowing you have the power to influence the trajectory of someone else's life by leading by example is extremely powerful for your own psyche. It makes you walk a little taller and love yourself even more than you might have before. I might not be famous today with people asking for my autograph, but I use every chance I get to try to build up female athletes at all levels." — Katie P.

4. When one love ends, another begins

"I fell in love with me when I stopped loving him." — Resa C.

5. Stop living for other people

"Mine was sitting on a beach on summer vacation with my kids. I wasn't anywhere near where I wanted to be with my body, and I was staring out in the ocean and I thought, 'Who cares!?' I thought about how little time we all have and how precious life is, and I decided I was sick and tired of living for other people — afraid of what they would think or say. I decided I was not going to wait for another 10, 30, 50 pounds to love myself; I was just going to start doing it because I was a person with a heart and experiences and a valued life outlook. I used to hear people talk about a 'moment' when they just woke up and it all became clear, and I used to think that was garbage... but I had that moment. There was no trauma or real reason for it, it's just like something clicked. It's not been all perfect since then, but I feel more myself than I ever have before because I made a decision to be OK with being me." — Esther H.

6. Your body is a strong, beautiful machine

"When I finished my first marathon, I knew I could do anything I put my mind to. When I finished my first Olympic-distance triathlon, I started treating my body like the strong, beautiful machine that it is. When I had little dude, I realized that I deserve to treat myself as well as I treat him." — Amber W.

7. Strength is its own kind of love

"After I finished chemo, I realized what I was capable of. Maybe not exactly love myself, but strong respect." — Rachel S.

8. Allow yourself to be happy

"The turning point for me was a few months after my separation. I had gone through months of sleepless nights and going through life numb. One morning I was on my run and the sun was slowly coming up. I noticed life waking up that day as the sun started shining on the fields. It was literally like I started seeing the world in color again. I remember that was the first time I allowed myself to be happy. I decided to fight for myself and love myself even though he stopped loving me. I mattered." — Yadi B.

9. Accept yourself to love yourself

“I fell in love with myself, oddly enough, when it felt like everyone else had fallen out of love with me. My ex-husband and I had separated, and in that process I had to deal with the loss of not only my marriage, but several friendships as well. I felt more alone than I ever had, and at first that was really hard, but then I started to rediscover myself and relearn what I wanted and needed. I hadn’t realized until then that the biggest reason I had been so unhappy was because of the amount of myself that I’d given up for my ex, for certain friends. I had eroded myself so that I could fit better with them. My life, my heart and what felt like my entire self had been broken apart into small pieces, and it was when I accepted that I needed to move on and that I had to love myself enough to not only put myself back together, but to build myself up even stronger than before. Through this I’ve learned that I’m more brave and resilient than I ever thought I could be, that I’m proud of myself, that I’m someone I genuinely like, someone I could be friends with. I think really I fell in love with myself when I was able to see my own worth, my own value, and realize that I was strong enough to refuse to compromise my own needs and happiness to be what others wanted me to be.” — Cheyenne S.

10. Determination pays off

“I hate to make losing weight a big deal, but for me that was my turning point. I had zero self-confidence and I was in pain quite often from having too much weight on me. I was single and trying to date and had a guy tell me I needed to learn what a treadmill was. (Mean!) While I went on my weight-loss journey for myself, his comment was my fuel. Once I started to lose weight, my confidence started to rise and I never looked back. I knew I could do anything I put my mind to and realized I deserved the best in every aspect of life. For example, I knew I deserved a better job, so I went for it and here I am now in a much better position. If I had not found this confidence that we all have deep down inside, I wouldn't be where I am today.” — Sara G.

6 gross reasons you should stop letting your dog kiss you

$

Turns out it's not quite true what they say about dogs' mouths being cleaner than ours.

You love your dog, and there's a good chance you love his kisses too. In fact, only a true dog-lover knows the joy those drool-covered kisses can bring. But some experts say it might be time to put an end to swapping slobber with your pooch.

We don't mean you need to keep your distance. There's nothing wrong with hugs and cuddles, but those kisses might just be a major risk to your health — especially when they land on your face. When licks from your dog come into contact with other intact parts of your skin, there's very little chance of absorption when it comes to disease and bacteria. Having that saliva end up in your nose or mouth, however, is a whole different bag of worms (sometimes literally).

Here are six things you're at risk for every time you pucker up to your pup.

1. Gum disease

There are lots of ways you can get gum disease, but you may not have known you can get it from kissing your dog too. One Japanese study published in the Archives of Oral Biology found that several types of bacteria were found in the mouths of both dogs and humans, meaning it's entirely possible they can be transferred from dog to human. Since there's a good chance your dog isn't as strict about brushing as you are, it might be a good idea to refrain from locking lips if you want to keep your pearly whites, well, pearly.

More: 9 gross reasons you shouldn't bring your pet to bed with you

2. Fecal contamination

Keep in mind that anywhere your dog licks, you're basically licking too if you let him kiss you on the mouth. Since it's no secret that dogs lick their own behinds — as well as the rear ends of other dogs — and enjoy the occasional "treat" from the back yard or litter box, it should be no surprise that your dog's mouth may be contaminated with fecal matter.

3. Worms

This one might just make your skin crawl. Dogs can very easily get worms (roundworm and hookworm being the most common) — either through other infected animals or contact with infected feces, and they can just as easily pass it to you through your saliva.

More: Your dog might not like hugs as much as you do

Still not convinced? Tapeworms are a horror on a whole other level. These things can grow up to 30 feet long in your intestines, and can survive in there for up to 20 years. Dogs usually eat the eggs when they scavenge carcasses, and the tapeworms grow in their guts. They then shed more eggs in their feces, which they can transfer to you through saliva when they clean themselves and then lick your face. This may not be a big risk if your dog doesn't get much chance to roam, but it can be an issue for dogs in country settings or that have frequent success at escaping.

To prevent this from happening, keep the dog-to-human mouth contact to a minimum and de-worm your dog as a pup. Ask your vet to test your dog for worms regularly and follow through with any meds your vet recommends.

4. Salmonella

You know you can get salmonella from tainted food, but what about from your dog? Dogs can develop salmonella either from eating tainted dog food or from picking infected food out of the trash. Once infected, they can transmit it to humans, either through fecal matter or saliva. In 2012, the CDC reported that 49 people in 20 states were infected with a strain of salmonella infantis, which was traced to an infected batch of dry dog food.

5. Food poisoning

Think about the things your dog eats — especially if he spends a fair amount of time outside off-leash. Dead animals? Sure. Animal droppings? Check. Trash? You bet. So it shouldn't be a big shock that some of their saliva in your mouth has the power to give you the worst case of food poisoning you've ever experienced.

6. Sepsis

This one's extremely rare, but it's still a possibility so it needs to be mentioned. Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a bacterium commonly found in the mouths of dogs. It doesn't typically transfer to humans when bites haven't taken place, but it can to be transferred through a lick — though that happening is unlikely. The bacterium doesn't typically affect humans unless they are very young or old or have compromised immune systems. In the cases where humans are infected, in can lead to a blood infection, or sepsis, which is very dangerous and can lead to death.

More: Ladies, we have an explanation for your dog's fascination with your period

Keep in mind, these warnings are the same when you're the one that's planting the kisses. If you need to smooch your pup, do it on the top of his head or his back, not his snout — where all the grossness tends to reside.

Anderson Cooper's long-lost brother is home for the holidays

Anderson Cooper and his long-lost brother have been reunited after decades apart, and it's all thanks to Cooper's 2016 documentary Nothing Left Unsaid.

More: You may love him, but there's no way Anderson Cooper will be the Live! co-host

Cooper's half-brother, Christopher Stokowski, reportedly abandoned the family 38 years ago after he had a fight with he and Cooper's mother Gloria Vanderbilt's shrink. (Yup, it's kinda confusing... That must have been one heck of a close family shrink.) The fight was said to be about Stokowski's love life, according to Page Six. At the time, Cooper was just 10 years old, but he was said to be very close to his brother and devastated by his decision to become estranged from the family.

Following the release of Nothing Left Unsaid, which examined Vanderbilt's life and legacy as a mother and fashion icon, Stokowski apparently decided it was time to come home.

He was able to reach out to Cooper and Vanderbilt, and Cooper confirmed the reconciliation during an interview with Page Six.

"Yes, we did reconnect and reconcile after the film," he said.

More: Anderson Cooper was adorably giddy sitting across from Scott Speedman on Live!

Though Cooper didn't expand of the details of the relationship, Cooper's uncle, Harry Cooper, said that Vanderbilt has seen Stokowski at least three times since the documentary was released back in April on HBO.

Cooper has had a hard family life. Aside from his brother's decision to leave the family, Cooper also lost another brother to suicide when Cooper was 21 years old.

"He jumped off a balcony at my mother’s apartment building, in front of my mother, when she was begging him not to..." Cooper said of the incident during a Hope for Depression Research Foundation Luncheon. "Suicide is something that we don’t speak much about, and unfortunately there is still that stigma and shame surrounding [it]."

He added, "That motivated me to go out in those early years and... to seek out people who were struggling to survive was because I was suffering myself, and I wasn’t sure how I would survive."

Thankfully, Cooper found his motivation and went on to become one of the most noteworthy journalists of our time.

Happy holidays from Grey's Anatomy — here are two huge cliffhangers

$

I'm not sure how it happened so fast, but the Grey's Anatomy winter finale just went down — and, to be honest, it was kind of a game-changer. Apparently Shonda Rhimes was feeling real salty this week, because she left fans with not one, but two big ol' cliffhangers.

First, there's the whole Amelia and Owen debacle. Newlyweds though they may be, these two have basically been on life support as a couple since they said "I do." Of course, we all know that Amelia hasn't come to terms with her past enough to share it with Owen, and we all know that Owen is suffering from PTSD-like delusions again... but they don't have the benefit of audience omniscience.

More: McDreamy just made his way back to Grey's Anatomy, and it was awful

This week, Amelia didn't even come to work. It's that bad between the two of them apparently. If there is a silver lining to the situation, though, it's that Owen and Riggs wind up having a heart-to-heart. Owen admits he cheated on Cristina, and he also admits how much he is struggling with the fact he feels like he is back in the same baby-less situation he was with her.

Regardless of what happens between Amelia and Owen, I'm hoping these guys will bro it up. In my mind, they're the new-age Derek and Sloan.

But, I digress. At the end of the night, Riggs asks Owen to go grab a drink, and he in turn asks for a rain check  — he wants to go home and see his wife, he says. The only problem with that is Amelia isn't at their home. When he arrives, he finds a letter on the counter that would seem to suggest she has left him. Heck, it makes it seem like she's leaving Seattle altogether.

That's cliffhanger No. 1. The second cliffhanger, it should come as no big surprise, comes by way of everyone's favorite beleaguered pediatric surgeon, Alex Karev.

His potential jail time-slash-exit from the show has been teased for weeks now, so we knew it was a possibility coming into this week's winter finale. However, there did seem to be some progress that hadn't been made before, offering up a little hope something might change.

For starters, Jo finally reveals to Alex that she is married. That's the reason she can't marry him, because her name isn't even Jo Wilson. These two actually had a few tearjerking scenes tonight, so thanks for that, Shon-da. Jo also tells Alex that if she disappears after the case, he shouldn't take it personally. She would never want that, but she can't let her husband find her.

At that point, you start to see the wheels turning in Alex's head. Naturally, he tries to talk to Meredith about it, but she's having none of it. She's his ride-or-die, and she feels like Jo could have intervened long ago and put an end to Alex's persecution.

More: Grey's Anatomy better be joking with this whole 'Webber might be leaving' thing

But Alex goes to Bailey and tells her his plan. Moments later, he recounts it to Mer: he's taking the plea deal. Then Jo won't have to worry or be found out or leave. He is essentially sacrificing himself for her. He tries to tell Mer she will be OK, but she stubbornly insists this is about him.

His life will be ruined, she says. His career. Everything he has worked so hard to achieve and become.

Still, he leaves and heads to the courthouse to speak to the district attorney. As he sits down to wait, he realizes he has a voice message from Mer. In it, she begs him not to give up, promising she will always go down swinging for him. "There were five of us, and now there are two. There can't just be me," she pleads.

Oh dear God, the feels.

As someone returns to tell Alex the D.A. will see him now, he hangs up the phone — and the screen fades to black. Of course it does. Because now, we'll have to wait until Jan. 19 to find out Alex's fate, and it basically all boils down to whether or not he chooses to fight for himself and for Mer or to martyr himself (although, admittedly, he did do what he's being charged with) for Jo.

More: Did Grey's Anatomy's Alex Karev just confirm he's leaving the show?

What will it be? Truth be told, I would not be heartbroken if he fights it and winds up sticking around. If that means Jo's gotta go, well... bye girl, bye. I heart Camilla Luddington and I was really rooting for Jo and Alex to work, but we super-fans are gonna need Alex to not bail on Mer.

The woman has been through too much. She can't lose her "person," too — don't make us play the McDreamy card.

What do you think? Are Alex and Amelia both leaving?

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon make a lot less than we thought

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are rich, sure, but it turns out they're not that rich.

Thanks to their divorce settlement, TMZ obtained a look at the details, including the couple's financial declarations, and they aren't outrageous.

More: Mariah Carey's (now useless) engagement ring could feed a third-world country

According to the documents, Carey made $6.3 million in 2014 while Cannon only raked in $2.7 million. I say "only" while keeping in mind that in 2014 Beyonce reportedly made $306 million, Britney Spears made $20 million and Taylor Swift made $64 million. Those numbers definitely put things with Carey and Cannon into perspective.

Carey's income is also even more telling when you consider that she is demanding $50 million from her ex-fiancé and billionaire James Warren. The couple called off their engagement in October, and Carey is claiming that Warren owes her big money because she uprooted her life for him.

Things with Cannon seem to be more civil, however. The divorce settlement requires Cannon to put aside $5,000 a month for their two kids, twins Monroe and Moroccan. They agree that no other new significant other will be addressed by the kids as "mom" or "dad" and they share custody, though the kids are primarily with Carey.

The two even seem committed to co-parenting and have been seen together with their kids on multiple occasions since their split.

Of course, it's important to keep in mind that just because Carey and Cannon had a low turnout in 2014 doesn't mean their years are consistent. According to Forbes, Carey went on to earn $27 million in 2015.

Nathalia JMag's breakdown on Project Runway wasn't a big deal

$

Viewers need only see a few episodes of Project Runway in order to recognize how extraordinarily challenging the show can be, even for its most talented veterans. Designers are given a series of very difficult tasks far outside of their comfort zone, sometimes with very limited budgets. They are separated from their loved ones and forced to make connections as best they can with their fellow contestants — and when those new friends are sent home, it can be devastating. Furthermore, if they show an ounce of emotion, they are mercilessly attacked on social media.

More: Erin Robertson has become Project Runway's ultimate one-trick pony

Nathalia JMag — who, until now, has largely been sheltered by her relationship with Jenni Pulos — learned all this the hard way during tonight's episode, when, deprived of her support system, she quickly crumbled. The episode's task —  creating a powerful editorial look — should have fit in nicely with her creative side, but she evidently needed a bit more structure. She tried to turn to the other contestants, but didn't quite get the support she wanted. Really, what she needed most was a hug.

More: There's more to Project Runway's Cornelius Ortiz than his bad attitude

The problems began when JMag was critiqued by Tim Gunn, who spoke ill of her initially crazy jacket and her simple jumpsuit. She completely shifted her focus after speaking to Gunn. This put her under that much more pressure, given her already limited timeline. Worried about her "costumey" look, JMag began to freak out, to the point that Dexter Simmons had to hand her a tissue.

Twitter users did not take kindly to JMag's display of emotion. A few were sympathetic to her situation, but most viewed her display of emotion as overly dramatic and bordering on theatrical.

People are really quick to judge reality stars when they have breakdowns, but a little empathy would be nice. The same people trashing JMag have most likely had their own emotional outbursts — they simply haven't been captured on cable TV. Nobody knows exactly what was going on in JMag's life at this point or how she was feeling that day. She clearly lacks confidence, but trashing her online is not the way to build it back up.

More: Tim Gunn was right to save Cornelius Ortiz on Project Runway

Now, if JMag had remained calm, she just might have been able to produce a higher-quality garment. Instead, her costumey outfit led to her elimination. She took it well, however, and admitted that she'd learned a lot. We have great hopes for her future in fashion!

RHONY star Jules Wainstein's divorce gets ugly over the kids

Real Housewives of New York star Jules Wainstein is joining the ranks of Real Housewives stars who have had really messy splits, but Wainstein's divorce might take the cake. (And, yes, I'm saying that even remembering what Bethenny Frankel went through.)

More: RHONY's LuAnn de Lesseps & Bethenny Frankel need to stop fighting dirty

Now, Jules is fighting with her husband Michael Wainstein over custody of their two kids, son Jagger and daughter Rio, and Michael is using Jules' reported history of drug abuse as evidence she is unfit to be a mother.

According to New York Daily News, Michael's lawyer Morghan Richardson told the outlet, "Look no further than to watch TV to see the bag of drugs that she carries around."

In the last season of RHONY, Jules did in fact make a comment about carrying lidocaine and Percocet with her, but the judge in the couple's case, Justice Michael Katz, wants more evidence, smartly saying that he isn't going to take some reality TV show as fact.

More: RHONY is saying goodbye to a fan favorite — and they aren't happy about it

"I don't try cases based on what may or may not be on the television," Katz said as quoted by New York Daily News.

But Michael Wainstein might have more evidence than just the RHONY clips to present. Jules reportedly spent some time in rehab for an eating disorder and drug abuse. As it stands now, the couple shares custody but that could change depending on the evidence Michael presents.

Jules and her soon-to-be ex-husband announced their divorce over the summer after eight years of marriage and, since then, it's been a quick downhill drop between the two as accusations of spousal abuse and affairs have been alleged on both sides.

More: RHONY has reportedly signed on a new star & things just got really exciting

I hope, for the sake of their kids, that these two can work together and come to a peaceful solution.

Do you think Jules Wainstein has a history of drug abuse? Do you think her husband should be granted custody of their children?

Supernatural’s Dean making a deal with Billie is so going to end badly

$

Sam and Dean really need to learn that making deals is never a good idea, especially when it's with a reaper who hates Winchesters.

More: Supernatural's Hitler episode brought up so many feelings about Donald Trump

That's what happened during Thursday's episode when Dean made a deal with Billie. Yes, that Billie, aka the one reaper who really hates Sam and Dean and wants them dead. She's a firm believer in that what dies should stay dead. The fact that Sam and Dean have returned from the dead so many times really irks her. If Sam or Dean ever die, Billie has promised them she won't resurrect either of them. Keep those fingers crossed that never happens.

So why the heck did Dean make a deal with her? Well, because he just can't help but ensure Sammy and everyone else he loves remain safe and sound. While a group of hunters (including Sam, Dean, Jody and even Mary) gathered to honor a recently deceased fellow hunter, a crossroads demon showed up causing quite the mess.

For part of it, Dean was stuck outside and couldn't get back inside the house. Enter Billie, who was there to reap a fresh soul (one of the hunters was killed). Dean asked her to help him get inside to which she replied, "You'll owe me one." That sure doesn't sound ominous.

More: Yeah, Supernatural's new villain Mr. Ketch is the absolute worst

Dean made the deal and ended up saving the day, alongside the other hunters. At the end of the episode, Billie showed up and approached Sam, Dean and Mary. She looked right at Dean and told him he owed her one. She then turned to Mary. That's right, Billie wanted Mary's soul and not just because Dean made a deal with her, but because she could tell how miserable Mary is on Earth. Mary didn't argue with Billie, though that wasn't enough for Mary to walk away from her boys. She told Billie the only way she'd get her soul is when she dies and that's not this moment.

Whew! That was a close one, but Billie's deal with Dean still hasn't been fulfilled. How is he going to repay her? It remains to be seen. Anyone else freaking out that this isn't going to end well for the Winchesters? She is thirsty for a soul and specifically a Winchester one. Let's hope that doesn't happen and this deal just fizzles out. Who are we kidding? Billie won't forget the favor she did Dean and she will be back. Fans, prepare for something bad to happen, because you know it will.

The upside to all of this? Hopefully Billie and Crowley are going to have more scenes this season. Come on, you know you're totally shipping them. During Season 11, their chemistry was off the charts. Who doesn't want more of that?

Did Robin Thicke secretly tie the knot with his model girlfriend?

More: Oh my dear Lord, Paula Patton's throwback pic of Robin Thicke is glorious

He and April Love Geary, his girlfriend of around two years, are on a romantic tropical getaway right now, and Geary has been very active on Instagram during the trip. There's one snap in particular that caught the attention of a lot of her followers: a close-up of her bikini-clad butt, with "ALT" monogrammed on the black swim bottoms.

Why is this a big deal? Because "ALT" would be Geary's initials if she were married to Thicke. Tons of her followers have pointed it out, and the likelihood that the two had a secret wedding seems high, especially when you consider how she captioned the photo: "His."

"What are you telling us?" one follower wrote in a comment. Another added, "Congratulations .:-$:-!:-) On the news if it's True. Blessing for a Beautiful life of Love."

Thicke and Geary have been dating since soon after Thicke split from his ex-wife, Paula Patton, in spring of 2014. They managed to stick together even though Thicke was very publicly trying to win Patton back with a breakup album entitled Paula and singles like "Get Her Back." The album flopped about as hard as Thicke's marriage, but it seems to have been for the best — he and Geary have been inseparable ever since.

And if fans need any more proof that the two tied the knot, check out their new ink.

Geary showed off a snap of the tattoos they got on their ring fingers of each other's initials. There's not much left to speculate about here. I'd say it's, like, 95 percent certain they got married.

7 little low-effort ways to stay fit this winter

When it comes to the urge to hibernate and be lazy come cold weather, I'm definitely guilty. The dark evenings make it difficult to make myself head out for a run — more on that here — and I'm hard-pressed to force myself to do 30 minutes on the treadmill. The problem: Winter is a long season in the northeast, and the holidays make it less than ideal to go four months in a sedentary state.

Scary stats about weight gain aside, winter is otherwise a good time to slow down, recharge, rest and nourish our bodies mindfully. The trouble comes when you forget to incorporate movement here and there. It doesn't have to be as much as you do the rest of the year — unless you really want to be able to go for that second helping of cheesy pumpkin pasta — but we don't feel our best when we don't give our bodies a chance to sweat and our muscles a chance to work.

That's why I asked pro trainers for their best strategies for staying fit through the coldest time of year — here are their top nine tricks.

1. Get it over with

If, like me, 5 p.m. sunsets and cold temps do not make you excited to work out, set your alarm a little earlier in the morning and, as they say, get 'er done. Not only does some research show that you might have a more efficient workout, but celebrity trainer and master Flywheel instructor Holly Rilinger says it can set your day on the right track. "Start your morning by throwing on your earbuds to get up and move! Music is a proven mood booster so the good vibes will set you up for a good day." Even better, knowing your gym time is over.

2. Buddy up

One of the best ways to bust your own excuses for not hitting Pilates or barre class is to make plans with a friend or significant other so you'll feel too guilty to cancel (though, admittedly, if you live with said SO, enabling each other might be a problem). If you're normally a solo gym-goer, winter is a good time to break that habit and try the buddy system. "Working out with a friend or partner is a great way to stick to a fitness routine," says Rilinger. "Pick a friend and select a workout schedule together. That way, you can keep each other motivated to work hard — and it passes the time more quickly!"

3. Stretch

Not in the mood or feeling too low-energy for a major cardio session? Head to a yoga class or just do some simple stretches in your living room says Ben Wegman, instructor at New York-based High Intensity Training boutique fitness studio Fhitting Room. "I find that making a point to stretch more during the winter makes huge strides in my well-being," he says. "Our bodies are naturally tighter and colder in the winter due to the weather, so stretching can improve your mood, clarity, and release some of that tension from compacting your body to hurry through the cold." Good point.

4. Fit in little bursts of movement

You've heard it before, but winter's a great time for a reminder — simply taking the long or slightly harder way can give you a little more movement and help you burn a few extra calories each day. "Take the stairs," suggests Derek DeGrazio, celebrity trainer and managing partner at Barry’s Bootcamp Miami. "Lunge around your house instead of walking, or make a habit of doing a set of 10 quick push-ups right after you wake up." Equally important is self-care during winter, he says. “Identify what you love about the warmer months and find comparable experiences. If you love the heat of the sun on your body, why not find more time for hot, soothing baths in the winter.” Your body will thank you.

5. Work out in bed...

According to celebrity trainer and Gold’s Gym Fitness Institute Member Jay Cardielloyour bed is nearly as good a place to get in a workout as a mat on the floor. "The bed actually can be an effective place to perform both cardiovascular and strength protocols," says Cardiello. "The bed can assist in development of proprioception, which is basically the feedback loop between the body and the brain. So, simply do two or three sets of as many push-up, planks or alternating arm extensions in bridge position as you can do in a minute."

6. And while watching TV...

Even an intentionally lazy activity can become healthier with a little effort, says DeGrazio. Next time you're binging on Scandal or Gilmore Girls, do planks during commercials. "You can also wall-sit and V-sit while watching a movie or show," he says. Hey, if it's an excuse to stay inside and keep Netflix on, I'm in.

7. And while brushing your teeth

Last but not least, the five minutes you spend cleaning your mouth at the start and finish of each day can be another chance to do a simple but effective workout. "Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth," says Cardiello. "You'll improve core strength, symmetry throughout your hips and balance. Another great reason to always make sure to brush twice a day!"
