Planning your Super Bowl menu

Super Bowl menu

Plan a regional Super Bowl feast!

It's the most important football game of the year… is your menu ready? Plan your Super Bowl eats with inspiration from the cities of both teams competing for the ultimate prize.

At the beginning of August, 32 football teams began a six-month journey with one goal in mind: to play the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana for the right to be called the best team in professional football.

Thirty teams have been disappointed and only one game remains. It's a game that's as important for football as it is for commercials, musical acts, wardrobe malfunctions and, of course, truly awe-inspiring game day eats. Are you ready to eat and watch some football?

The game plan

If your game day menu isn't nailed down yet, have no fear. Both teams come from cities with strong culinary chops from which to draw inspiration. If you want, you can even make it a competition. Set up two tables, each with dishes from both cities . Then, let your diners choose their favorite city. Using the results of this scientific poll, you can lay back with your full belly and know that the team with the best food will win the big game.

Sound like a plan? Here's your culinary game plan from both cities.

Chinese style spareribs

San Francisco fare

San Francisco is any food lover's dream. It is a melting pot that draws heavily from numerous cultures around the world. Add to this its proximity to Napa Valley and its large number of superior farmers markets, and San Francisco is easily one of the culinary gems of the West. Therefore, for your party, you might want to recreate an elegant dim sum event, serve Chinese spareribs, feature artisanal cheese or pour Napa wine. Finish the San Francisco feast with a Ghiradelli chocolate creation to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth. However you choose to do it, you can't go wrong with good ol' San Francisco cuisine.

Crab cakes

Baltimore favorites

Baltimore, on the other hand, doesn't have as well-known a reputation for being a foodie's town like San Francisco, but its proximity to the ocean and its supply of crab means that Baltimore knows good seafood. No Baltimore-inspired menu would be complete without crab. The old standby is crab cakes, which are great football food by themselves or served as crab cake sliders. For less traditional pigskin food, you can also serve crab Imperial, a hot and creamy crab dish.   Still, Baltimore is more than just crab. You can also serve a corned beef sandwich in honor of Baltimore's Corned Beef Row or offer guests pit beefs, an unusual blend of barbecue beef, slices of sweet onion and horseradish.

Enjoy the game!

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what you serve on game day. You might be a disgruntled Kansas City fan serving barbecue, a Buffalo fan serving wings or a Green Bay fan serving cheese. You might just be watching for the commercials. No matter what, serving city-inspired cuisine can be a blast, but really all that matters is you serve food people like, and you get to have a good time with friends. That's what really matters.

Big names in the world of DVD releases this week! Find out which ones flopped and which demand your attention.

1) End of Watch

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena were some of L.A.'s finest. They were the rock stars of California law and any day on the job could mean fist fights, high speed chases or drug busts. It was their dream job. The two thrived on the adrenaline and the power that came with it, but when one discovery pins them up against the brutality of a Mexican drug cartel, the joy ride hits a serious note and the two must band together if they hope to see the light of day. Anna Kendrick also stars.

Rotten Tomatoes: 85% Fresh

2) To Rome with Love

From the brilliant mind of Woody Allen comes this hilarious, multi- dimensional perspective on the many romances, adventures, complications and politics that unfold in Italy when you mix a cast like Penelope Cruz, Ellen Page, Alec Baldwin and more.

Rotten Tomatoes: 43% splat

3) The Paperboy

This flick didn't get much love from the critics over at Rotten Tomatoes, but we figure our SheKnows readers might give it a shot considering it stars Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman. The Paperboy centers around a murder mystery and an allegedly unjust sentence, but the sensuous twists and turns take center stage as the stars manipulate one another to suit their innermost desires.

Rotten Tomatoes: 39% splat

4) Won't Back Down

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis are committed to salvaging quality education in their children's chronically underserved, inner-city school. Won't Back Down is a testament to powerful parenting and the bonds that form in the pursuit of a better community.

Rotten Tomatoes: 33% splat

5) Taken 2

Liam Neeson is back with round two of the Taken series. The plot is fairly predictable if you've seen the first movie, but that doesn't mean the suspense won't hold your interest all the way through.

Rotten Tomatoes: 21% Splat

Tina Turner wants to be a Swiss Miss

Legendary singer Tina Turner is giving up her U.S. passport in order to become an official Swiss citizen in a country she has called home for almost two decades.

TinaTurnerSwissCitizen

In breaking news on Friday, an unusual announcement was made by Tina Turner, according to her local Swiss newspaper and reported by the Associated Press. It seems Ms. Turner is calling it quits on her U.S. citizenship.

By renouncing her allegiance to the U.S., she will become a citizen of Switzerland where she has lived since 1995. Turner has lived in Zurich with her partner, music executive Erwin Bach, in a lake house named Chateau Algonquin.

In the German daily paper, Blick, she is quoted as saying, "I'm very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here... I cannot imagine a better place to live."

The 73-year-old was born in Nutbush, Tennessee, as Anna Mae Bullock, and she already has the locals up in arms. The mayor of Brownsville, Tennessee, Jo Matherne , said in a statement, "Tina Turner — as she has gotten worldwide fame — has never forgotten her roots. I think any time a person, whether they're world-renowned or the most meek and mild, makes the decision to change their citizenship we need to step back and think what causes that decision."

The "Proud Mary" singer will have to wait until her request is officially cleared by the Swiss Council of States before she receives her new passport, but it appears Turner is officially calling Switzerland her homeland.

She's not the only Hollywood celebrity to call the European country home: other stars such as Celine Dion, Shania Twain and Phil Collins are fellow property owners.

Turner first rose to fame in the 1960s as a part of the duo Ike and Tina Turner. Her violent relationship with her ex-husband was well-documented in the 1993 film starring Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett, What's Love Got to Do with It?

Her solo career marked a huge comeback in the late '70s, leading up to her hit album Private Dancer in 1984. She has sold over 200 million records to date.

Burt Reynolds' hospitalization is the result of the terrible flu that is going around this year. The 76-year-old actor is just one of many Hollywood stars who've had to battle the bug.

Burt Reynolds

Burt Reynolds remains hospitalized in Florida, where he is being treated for complications from the flu.

A rep for the 76-year-old confirmed the actor came down with the virus so many have battled, but wasn't able to beat the bug on his own. As Reynolds' symptoms worsened, he was taken first to the hospital and then later moved into the intensive-care unit.

Burt Reynolds face foreclosure in Florida>>

TMZ reports that Friday the Boogie Nights actor was moved to the ICU after doctors determined he was "severely dehydrated." Thankfully, doctors are optimistic the much-loved, mustachioed actor will make a full recovery.

"He is doing better at this time," a rep told CNN about Reynolds, who is pictured here at a signing in 2011. "We expect, as soon as he gets more fluids, he will be back in a regular room."

Television and movie fans likely recall that the flu was a hot topic earlier this month at the Golden Globe Awards. Hugh Jackman, who won Best Actor for his Les Miserables role, began his acceptance speech by saying, "Sorry, I'm at the tail end of this flu and I was kicking myself for not getting the flu shot... but it appears actually you don't need one. I feel great!"

Check out tips on keeping your family safe from the flu>>

Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence also said she was sick with the flu, telling Ryan Seacrest, "I don't want to shake your hand, I have the flu. Sorry!"

Meryl Streep, whom Lawrence beat out for the award, missed the ceremony entirely because she, too, was ill.

No word yet on if Reynolds, who will celebrate birthday 77 on Feb. 11, took Hugh Jackman's advice and skipped this year's flu shot, or not.

Matt Damon hijacks Jimmy Kimmel Live

The late-night publicity stunt in which Matt Damon hijacked Jimmy Kimmel's show turned into a huge ratings success for the show.

MattDamonhijacksKimmel

On Thursday night, it looked like the years of Jimmy Kimmel's famous farewell quote, "Sincere apologies to Matt Damon, we ran out of time for him tonight. We will get him on the air soon," finally caught up with him.

Kimmel's show was hijacked by Damon himself. Instead of the usual show opening, every guest and musical artist was named "Matt Damon." Instead of watching Jimmy Kimmel Live, the audience was watching "Jimmy Kimmel Sucks."

The Promised Land actor opened with a hilarious monologue that roasted the funnyman with jabs like, "Hey... just for starters, let me ask you guys this, as an audience is it weird to see a person with actual talent host this show?"

While this was happening, Kimmel was duct-taped to a rolling office chair in the background with his tie stuffed into his mouth.

Damon put his own stamp on the show, calling in reinforcements like fellow Good Will Hunting star Robin Williams to finish out the monologue and "upgrading" Kimmel's staff by making musician Sheryl Crow the evening's bandleader. He also had Andy Garcia step in as the talk show sidekick.

The star-studded evening continued with Nicole Kidman as the first guest. In a move totally out of her usual prim and proper self, the actress gave the bound and gagged Kimmel a little lap dance.

When Damon mentioned she's never done the show before, Kidman responded, "He's just not classy." The audience roared with laughter.

The parade of stars kept on coming, with Reese Witherspoon, Gary Oldman, Demi Moore, Amy Adams and even Ben Affleck making an appearance as the cue card guy, all while Kimmel remained in the background as his show rolled on.

The publicity stunt proved to be a huge ratings success, giving the show its highest share ever in their new 11:35 p.m. time slot. According to the official press release, the show even beat The Tonight Show with Jay Leno by 62% and The Late Show with David Letterman by 120% in the coveted 18-49-year-old demographic.

Damon had been bumped from Kimmel's chat fest 1,205 times over the last decade. Perhaps the hijacking stunt was the key to late-night success.

Movie 43 movie review: Emma Stone gets a hickey on her vajayjay

$

This raunchy comedy is a teenage boy’s wet dream. Naked women, leprechauns and the most poop and fart jokes ever compiled into a single movie.

Movie 43

1 Star: Perfect for middle-school boys

This movie is made up of about a dozen comedy sketches so gross, so rank, you may just throw up a little in your mouth between laughs. The premise of this revolting romp is that a desperate Dennis Quaid is pitching Movie 43 to a studio executive and as he describes each scene to a baffled Greg Kinnear, the movie cuts to a kooky scenario.

The first sketch is with the lovely Kate Winslet, who’s agreed to go on a blind date with a successful lawyer, played by Hugh Jackman. The charming Jackman appears to be the ultimate catch, until he removes his scarf and reveals he has large droopy testicles hanging under his chin. When a hair falls from his neck scrotum into his salad, I — along with Kate Winslet — literally gagged.

Movie 43

Probably the funniest sketch is where Chris Pratt is about to ask his girlfriend, played by Anna Faris, to marry him. Turns out, she has a big request as well. Sweetly, she asks, “Will you poop on me?”

Unsure how to handle his girlfriend’s unusual request, he talks it over with his buddy, who tells him to eat Mexican food, saying, “You don’t want to be two-squeeze-thank-you-please. Pooping is a gift you give your soul mate.”

After eating a giant bean burrito, Chris’s stomach is gurgling and he begins farting up Anna’s bedroom. In agony, he tries to rush the pooping event, causing Anna to get angry and run out into the street. Chris follows her but gets hit by a Mini Cooper and his bowels explode all over the windshield.

Movie 43

Next, we're in a grocery store with Emma Stone and Kieran Culkin, who engage in a silly conversation over the loudspeaker. Kieran tells Emma, “I want to give you a hickey on your vagina,” which seems to make her want him even more.

Elizabeth Banks directs one of the sketches where Chloe Grace Moretz tries to have a make-out session with another 7th grader, but starts her period and gets blood all over the house. Christopher Mintz-Plasse shrieks, “The vagina is way too complicated for me!”

Bottom line: This is a gross-out comedy written by men for men, where human excrement is lauded as comedic gold. Unless you live for fart, poop and masturbation jokes, give this sick-flick a pass.

Run time is 97 minutes, there are outtakes during the first part of the credits, then the last sketch called "Beezel" plays, but nothing at the end of the credits.

Balancing a healthy diet with high-fiber pasta

Don’t shy away from carbs! Pasta can be part of a healthy, balanced diet, especially if it’s high in fiber like these deliciously easy spaghetti recipes.
Woman eating pasta

Don't shy away from carbs! Pasta can be part of a healthy, balanced diet, especially if it's high in fiber like these deliciously easy spaghetti recipes.

Slurp up some spaghetti for a balanced diet

Pasta and high-fiber don't typically go hand-in-hand, but Barilla's new line of nutritious pastas changes that. Their new pasta varieties have additional nutrients, which makes preparing a balanced meal even easier for a busy family.

We chatted with Barilla's Executive Chef Lorenzo Boni to get his cooking tips for creating flavorful and healthier meals any night of the week. Hailing from Italy, he knows a thing or two about pasta!

SheKnows: Where do you get your inspiration to create unique pasta dishes?

Chef Lorenzo Boni: As a native Italian, pasta has always been a big part of my life and at my table. I was born in Bologna, Italy, so I often use techniques I learned as a young chef. I also love sports and a healthy living lifestyle, so when I create recipes I always keep a healthy approach, Mediterranean inspired of course, which has always been a part of my life and culture.

SK: What is your go-to quick and easy pasta meal for a busy day?

Barilla PLUS Thin Spaghetti with garlic, red chili pepper flakes and olive oilLB: We conducted a survey recently for Barilla and found 90 percent of parents agreed pasta is an easy meal option — and I couldn't agree more! Preparing a pasta meal for your family allows you to multitask — chopping vegetables or herbs while boiling the pasta, chatting with your loved ones — all while creating a dish you know the whole family will enjoy. On your most time-crunched days, I recommend Barilla PLUS Thin Spaghetti with garlic, red chili pepper flakes and olive oil. It's a flavorful meal that is ready in about 20 minutes and made with items all from your pantry.

SK: Will there be any noticeable change in the texture or consistency of the new pastas when cooked?

LB: When cooked, Barilla PLUS looks and tastes similar to regular semolina pasta. I really enjoy Barilla PLUS combined with fresh veggies and/or seafood. Barilla Whole Grain is high in fiber, providing a nice nutty taste from the whole grains that really complement a variety of ingredients like fresh veggies, aromatic herbs, cheeses and meats. It's a great way to add more nutrition to your meals without sacrificing flavor!

"For a healthy diet, women need 25 grams of fiber per day."

SK: What sauces would you pair with these pastas?

LB: I like to remind people cooking at home that sometimes, extra-virgin olive oil is all you need to make a great sauce. There's a reason it's the principal source of healthy, unsaturated fat in the healthy Mediterranean diet. Skipping heavy cream sauces or butter in favor of extra-virgin olive oil is a great way to add flavor and nutritional benefits to your pasta. Remember, a little goes a long way!

SK: With fiber being such an important part of a diet, why not make all pastas high in fiber?

LB: We like to offer a broad range of pastas to meet everyone's nutritional needs and taste preferences. While semolina pasta may not have the high fiber you'll find in our Whole Grain, PLUS or White Fiber products, it does offer the traditional Italian taste. Each of our pastas offers the perfect base for layering on high-fiber vegetables and legumes to create a complete wholesome meal.

Wondering how nutritious pasta really is? We also talked with Anna Rosales, a registered dietitian, about the benefits of a balanced pasta meal.

SK: Does regular pasta have simple or complex carbohydrates and does this change with high-fiber pasta?

Anna Rosales: Pasta is a complex carbohydrate, which is considered a "good carb." Pasta also has a low to medium glycemic index. The lower the glycemic index, the more slowly a food breaks down in your body, resulting in a gradual rise in blood sugar. Cooking the pasta al dente can help ensure to keep the glycemic index lower and the structure intact. Our high-fiber pastas are also complex carbohydrates that offer the goodness of pasta with the added benefit of fiber.

SK: Barilla PLUS is high in ALA omega-3 fatty acids. How does this compare to other foods high in omega-3, like fish and nuts?

AR: One box of Barilla PLUS delivers the nutritional equivalent of the ALA omega-3 fatty acids in 6 ounces of walnuts, protein in 11 eggs and the fiber in 35 leaves of Swiss chard.

SK: How much daily fiber do you recommend for a healthy diet?

AR: For a healthy diet, women need 25 grams of fiber per day, and men should get 38 grams of fiber per day, according to an Institute of Medicine formula based on getting 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories. A pasta meal can be a great way to boost your fiber intake. Use pasta as a base for adding vegetables and legumes.

SK: When serving pasta, what are some ways to ensure a balanced meal?

AR: Pasta is best when paired with healthy ingredients, such as vegetables and lean proteins. It's easy to oversauce or top with too much cheese, which can add unnecessary calories. Choosing healthy, unsaturated fats like extra-virgin olive oil is a great way to add flavor without guilt. And if you choose to use cheese, just be mindful of portion control — one tablespoon is all you need.

Elle magazine's mistaken tweet is causing a small uproar on Twitter. How could the magazine mix up reality star NeNe Leakes and actress Danai Gurira?

Danai Gurira and NeNe Leakes

Elle magazine's mistake is making waves on social networks. Many on Twitter can't believe the magazine could mix up reality star NeNe Leakes with actress Danai Guirara!

The troublesome Elle tweet was sent out Thursday night, along with an Instagram photo of The Walking Dead star Danai Guirara. She looked fabulous, but the problem was the message, which read: "#NeNeLeakes looking gorgeous in #alexanderwang and @hot diamonds #ellewitv."

Followers very quickly noticed it wasn't NeNe Leakes in the photo, but rather, 34-year-old Guirara!

Eventually, the photo and description were taken down. Elle replaced the image with this message: "Apologies — clearly someone on our team needs glasses! The fabulous Danai Gurira looking stunning as ever!"

NeNe Leakes is engaged to her ex-husband!>>

Innocent mistake? Not everyone in the wide world of social networking thinks so.

"I guess all black women look alike huh??" one user wrote in response. Another tweeted, "In what world do Nene Leakes and Danai Gurira even look remotely the same @ELLEmagazine? Please stop with the bulls**t excuses & apologize."

A third person vented, "This makes no sense. Nene has SUPER blonde hair, she looks nothing like Danai. Epic fail by Elle Magazine." The major hair color discrepancy has not been lost on the two stars, who Yahoo's OMG! reports laughed off the mix-up while still at the event.

More celebrity twitter news from SheKnows>>

"I mean — look at my hair. I’m blonde!" NeNe Leakes is quoted as saying to Danai Gurira, who laughed and responded with a joke of her own. The reality star later tweeted, "@ The Elle Women in Television event! So funny how these event work! I'm glad I know who i'am."

The Oscars will honor the movie musical

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially confirmed that there will be a movie musical tribute at this year's show. Included in that list is Les Misérables, Dreamgirls, and Chicago.

OscarsMovieMusicalTribute

On Friday, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed the rumor that some of the cast of Les Misérables will perform at this year's Oscars ceremony. What makes this news even more interesting is that the show's executive producers, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, aren't stopping there.

The duo also announced that there will be a full movie musical tribute to several other films that have been made over the last decade. This includes the 2003 Best Picture winner Chicago and the 2006 film Dreamgirls.

Meron and Zadan said in an official statement, "The musical as a motion picture genre has had a remarkable renaissance in the last decade. We are excited to showcase three musical films — ‘Chicago,’ ‘Dreamgirls’ and ‘Les Misérables’ — on our Oscar show."

This comes as no surprise to industry insiders, given the fact that the producing team have a long history in the musical theatre genre. Not only did they produce the film version of Chicago, but they were also behind Hairspray and both Footloose movies, the original and the reboot.

To make matters even more interesting, they currently executive produce the NBC Broadway musical series, Smash. This year's big guest star on the show happens to be Best Supporting Actress winner for Dreamgirls, Jennifer Hudson.

Other than Adele, no other musical acts for performers have officially been announced, but it might not be a bad idea to place bets on a JHud performance. Hudson, a voting member of The Academy, might want to support both her TV show's producers and The Academy.

The producers are hoping to stack the Academy Awards with performances and the humor of host Seth MacFarlane to bring back the variety show feel. In turn, The Academy is looking for a ratings boost after years of declining audiences.

Sometimes life is stranger than fiction. That's why the folks behind USA's Necessary Roughness are zoning in on Manti Te'o. The athlete's relationship woes could show up on an upcoming episode.

Callie Thorne

Could a Manti Te’o story appear on Necessary Roughness? The USA hit is known to dramatize real life events. The series, which centers on a psychiatrist to celebs, covers everything from rockstars to pro skaters, but football is its bread and butter.

These days, you can't turn on the TV without seeing Te’o's face. The Notre Dame linebacker has become the talk of the town. It was recently revealed that Te’o was duped or "catfished" by an internet hoax.

The football player was in a longterm relationship with a woman , who unfortunately died of cancer. But there was a twist: He'd never met her and she wasn't real.

Manti Te'o admits to lying about girlfriend>>

While we're waiting for the inevitable Lifetime original movie, Necessary Roughness producers Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro told EW they may have something up their sleeves.

Necessary Roughness star Callie Thorne: New beginnings and hot costars>>

“We only just now started to map out season 3, [but] of course it comes up about every five minutes in the [writer's] room,” says Shapiro. “We’ve yet to determine if we’ve figured out a way how to slot it into what we do on our show, [but] we’d like to.”

So what's the driving force behind the Te'o interest?

“There’s something about it that just appeals and is interesting to everybody,” he says. “Those are always the kinds of stories we want to try to find — where the human condition is larger than just some small sports tale.”

This story has definitely taken a life of its own.

Necessary Roughness airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA.

Coachella bums out the kids

Apparently, not everyone was as stoked as I was about the 2013 Coachella line-up.

The Stone Roses will play Coachella 2013

Apparently some festival goers don't know who these guys are. Here's a hint: Rhymes with Lone Moses

The bookers for Coachella, Goldenvoice, went against the grain of picking through the usual Indie names — bands that skyrocketed to the top in the last six months and one random old-school rock band everyone was hoping for . Instead, they opted to school the youngsters. They came up with a list that had a few loved up-and-comers , a handful of bands that have been around for awhile, but that the kids who go to Coachella have never heard of and the token rappers that are still a little, well... not exactly relavant anymore.

The hipsters and youngsters have spoken and they're not exactly happy.

First, there's already a blog devoted to The Stone Roses, which questions who, exactly, they are. The answer, of course, is a really decent band! Stone Roses formed in the '80s in Manchester, England. They released their second seriously awesome album in 1994 and then broke up soon after. In 2011, they reunited and that, dear children, is why they are around. You have roughly three months to Youtube and Spotify the daylights out of them in preparation for the show.

Reminder: Music fans had the same problem after Arcade Fire took over the Grammys a couple years ago and started a blog questioning their coolness, too. Is there anyone who doesn't know and love Arcade Fire now?

Emma Roberts at Coachella

The line-up has a lot of people sulking. Actress Emma Roberts tweeted, "Feeling really blah about the weather and the Coachella lineup." Meanwhile, Nylon Magazine wrote, "News Flash: The @coachella '13 lineup is out, and it's a total 1995/2005 throwback." One of my favorites, though, is KQ, who Tweeted "I wonder if the Red Hot Chili Peppers are gonna surprise people at Coachella with a hologram of their fame from 1999."

But, hey! Let's not forget the real reason everyone seems to go to Coachella: the long list of celebs in attenance. Twitter user AlexanderGold said it best when he tweeted, "If I went to Coachella, it would only be to do drugs with former child stars looking to roughen up their image." Over the years, Coachella's crowds have been graced by the likes of Katy Perry, Alexander Skarsgard , Kristen Stewart and Penn Badgley . Trust me, guys: They'll still be there this year, too.

While it may not be saying much, at least MTV has my back. They tweeted, "Can we talk about how awesome the #Coachella lineup is?"

So, go! In your pre-fest months, check out some of those oldster bands and relative unknowns whose names you don't recognize on the line-up. If anything strikes your fancy , check 'em out onstage. You might just leave with a new favorite band.

Marvel Studios preparing a 'Strange' Phase 3

Marvel is taking their films to a higher level. The Avengers was just the tip of the iceberg. Studio president Kevin Feige has revealed the next step in the studio's cinematic journey.

Marvel's Kevin Feige

The Avengers was the highest-grossing film of 2012. It earned over $1.5 billion worldwide. That's a hard act to follow, but Marvel Studios is up to the challenge. Kevin Feige recently told MTV about their next phase of films.

Every movie from Iron Man to The Avengers was part of what Marvel calls Phase One. Phase Two covers the next few years, with Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2.

The Avengers 2 is officially on! Sequel date revealed>>

The studio's already working on their third act, which will kick off with Ant-Man and Doctor Strange.

"Ant-Man is definitely part of Phase Three," revealed Feige. "Like Iron Man 3, it's certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it's also through the lens of [director] Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we're making the movie."

Major Marvel news: More 3D and Ant-Man's release date>>

Wright presented a test reel at last year's San Diego Comic-Con. It was a crowd-pleaser, which let Marvel known they're going in the right direction.

"It's very much an Ant-Man origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe], but a different corner than we've seen before."

As for that long-awaited Doctor Strange movie...

"Doctor Strange, which I've been talking about for years, is definitely one of them," he confirmed. "He's a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he's totally different from anything else we have, just like Guardians of the Galaxy. He's totally different from anything we've done before, as is Ant-Man, which keeps us excited."

Ant-Man is slated for a Nov. 6, 2015 release. Doctor Strange is TBA.

Natural ways women can prevent heart disease

A lot of people think of heart disease as something that mostly happens to men. It’s even uncommon to see women in movies and TV shows rushed to the hospital with a heart attack. But the stats tell a different story.
Woman in red eating strawberry

A lot of people think of heart disease as something that mostly happens to men. It’s even uncommon to see women in movies and TV shows rushed to the hospital with a heart attack. But the stats tell a different story.

Get heart healthy

The reality is, heart disease is the leading killer of women in the U.S. — it affects more women than breast cancer. But there are some natural ways you can prevent heart disease. We chatted with Sherry Torkos, author, pharmacist and certified fitness instructor, to find out what we can do to protect ourselves from this silent killer.

According to Torkos, “the main concern with conventional medicine is that it often relies only on the use of prescription drugs. Drugs can only do so much,” she continues, “they can’t compensate for poor lifestyle choices like eating the wrong foods, not exercising, being stressed out and not getting a enough sleep.”

Heart-healthy super foods

We all know a proper diet low in fat and high in lean protein, complex carbs and fruits and veggies is important. As is getting at least an hour of exercise most days each week. But there’s more to heart health than just the food pyramid we all learned in school. Certain foods can aid in lowering your risk for heart disease.

Berries

Torkos says berries are high in many vitamins , fiber and antioxidants. The anthocyanins they contain improve the support structures of blood vessels, reduce the stickiness of platelets that play a key role in clot formation, raise HDL cholesterol levels and inhibit free-radical damage and inflammation.

Beans & legumes

Beans and legumes are a good source of protein, complex carbs and vitamin B12. In one study, they found that consuming legumes four times or more a week led to a 22 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease and an 11 percent lower risk of all forms of heart disease.

salmonFish

Fish provides omega-3 fatty acids and is good for people who have heart disease and those who are at high risk. These acids decrease the risk of abnormal heartbeats , which can lead to sudden death. They also slow the growth-rate of certain types of plaque, reduce the risk of blood clots and have a modest effect on lowering blood pressure.

If you don’t like fish, you can try fish oil supplements. But it’s important to find a cold-pressed oil made by a reputable company that screens for potential toxins .

Oats

Oats are another favorite of Torkos’. They provide more soluble fiber than any other grain. That fiber, called beta-glucans, has been shown to help lower cholesterol. They’re also a great source for other vitamins and minerals like manganese, selenium, vitamin B1, magnesium, phosphorus and even protein.

They’re normally served at breakfast because they’re low on the glycemic index and provide sustained energy . As added bonuses, they’re quick and easy and the perfect way to start a super-cold day. But you can also add them to recipes to serve for lunch or dinner.

Supplement your heart health

In addition to these five super foods, there are many supplements you can take to aid in heart health. Fish oil, for example, has similar health benefits to eating fish. Here are some others Torkos recommends.

Malaysian palm fruit oil

This oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and packed with potent antioxidants like beta-carotene and tocotrienols . This powerhouse can raise HDL levels, lower LDL cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of stroke and the damage to brain cells that happens after the stroke.

Many food companies, like Smart Balance, have switched away from hydrogenated oils in favor of palm fruit oil because it’s solid at room temperature and allows for better shelf-life without additional trans-fats.

Palm fruit oil is great for cooking, too, because it has a high smoke point . While it can be a bit tough to find in a regular grocery store, you can find it in international and health food stores. There are also a couple of brands available on Amazon.

vitaminCoenzyme Q10

Coensyme Q10 is an antioxidant that helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol. It also supports the function of the heart muscle.

Grape seed extract

Grape seed extract is high in polyphenols, antioxidant compounds that can be found in a variety of foods. A study conducted at UC Davis found that a particular type of grape seed extract can reduce bloom pressure similarly to prescription drugs and improve your circulation and blood vessel flexibility.

It tastes a lot like cinnamon, so you can actually use it in a variety of recipes. Try it in smoothies, dips, in your morning oatmeal and more.

Aged garlic extract

Aged garlic extract can help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. It also reduces inflammation and the progression of atherosclerosis .

Medical doctors vs. homeopathic doctors

If you’re interested in these kinds of preventative measures, you may be tempted to skip on a clinical doctor. But even if your insurance does cover homeopathic or naturopathic doctors, you need to make sure they’re licensed in your state and see a medical doctor regularly, preferably one who’s willing to work with a holistic practitioner to integrate natural measures with modern medical treatments.

How stress distorts your self-image and ways to break the vicious cycle

$

There are plenty of reasons why stress is not good for your physical health, but it's also not good for your mental health. When your body is suffering from chronic stress, it sends signals to your brain to move into panic mode and puts your body in a chronic fight-or-flight mode. This results in the shut-down of the thinking or reasoning parts of your brain. You start to see a distorted view of yourself, which only makes your stress escalate.

Stressed woman on bed

When you are under stress, you really aren’t thinking clearly, which tends to perpetuate your perception of stress and degrade your perception of Y-O-U. Good news: We have five ways you can calm yourself and regain clarity.

1

Figure out what triggers your stress

To determine exactly what is distorting your view of self and your life, think about triggers. Are there certain people in your life, a job or a situation that puts you in panic mode? By figuring out your triggers you can help to identify what areas of your life really need your focus and attention.

2

Take a moment
to breathe

When we take deep inhalations and exhalations it helps to tell our internal system to relax. When we are able to relax, certain chemicals are released in our bodies to help us focus and think more clearly. Try taking five deep inhalations and exhalations when you are feeling really stressed or right before you are about to do something really big, like a speech or job interview. You might be stressed and worried, but that brief moment of breathing will help to keep your body and mind in check.

3

Focus on the
whole picture

Sometimes when we get really stressed we start to pick apart every aspect of our lives. We start to criticize our looks, behaviors and relationships. When we are stressed, that distorted view of self can turn really negative. Take a moment and step back to try to understand what is happening to you in the broader context.

4

Surround yourself with supportive people

When we have a strong support system, we are often less stressed and less depressed. Look to friends and family members who build you up, not tear you down. Make a list of three people that you can call and talk to when you are really stressed. Keep that list in a visible area, so when you feel stressed you can call and talk to someone right away.

5

Consider
counseling

If you've been stressed for a long time and you see that it is having a negative impact on your friendships, relationships and other areas of your life, consider meeting with a licensed mental health professional. Professionals have many techniques and tools to help you learn to better manage your stress. Sometimes having professional support helps us get back on the road to a better self-image and less stress sooner than later.

SAG nominees: 5 things you probably don't know about Steve Buscemi

$
0
0
What do we know about Steve Buscemi, other than if he’s in a movie, we’re probably going to love it? Let’s take a look at one of Hollywood's strangest and most successful actors.

Steve Buscemi

A colorful résumé

Much like the weirdo characters that Buscemi plays, his pre-acting and -directing days are a cornucopia of interesting occupations. He was an ice-cream truck driver, sold newspapers in the toll lane on the Triborough Bridge, worked at a gas station and was a furniture mover and a fireman. Yes, a fireman . After the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11, Buscemi volunteered at his old New York City Fire Department firehouse for a week, in 12-hour shifts, helping firefighters search through the rubble for survivors. So loyal is Buscemi to his firemen friends that he was arrested in 2003 during a protest over the closure of a firehouse. More recently, he did a PSA for Friends of Firefighters for firefighters who lost their homes in Hurricane Sandy. With Steve, you can obviously take the boy out of the firehouse, but not the fireman out of the boy.

Look both ways!

The big screen isn’t the only place Buscemi has faced his mortality. When he was a kid, he was hit by a bus and fractured his skull. In a separate instance, he was chasing a ball and got hit by a car! You'd think his mother would have made him stay inside for a while. And how many of you have been stabbed in the head, neck and arm and lived to tell about it? Steve has. He and longtime buddy Vince Vaughn got into a barroom fight, and Vaughn was arrested for throttling one of Steve’s attackers. We can’t explain Steve’s teeth, but this brawl does account for the scar on his cheek.

A shoe-in with the Coens

Steve Buscemi has worked in more Coen brother films than any other actor — a record six times. That’s two more than Joel Coen’s wife, Frances McDormand. Buscemi is probably best remembered for his roles in the Coen cult classics Fargo and The Big Lebowski, as well as his unforgettable role as the no-tipping Mr. Pink in Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. Now we can watch Buscemi in his role as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, a role that earned him a SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance from a Male Actor in a Drama Series.

Manti Te'o and other scandalous celebrity frauds

In 1990, Milli Vanilli pulled the wool over millions of fans' eyes when the duo reached Grammy-winning status before being outed as lip-synchers. Check out Manti Te'o and the bevy of other celebs who have likewise been caught in a web of lies.

Football Pic Notre Dame Manti Te'oManti Te’o

This story has more twists and turns than a game of Candy Land. When Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o lost both his grandmother and his girlfriend in September, the world embraced the broken-hearted athlete’s commitment to honor his lost loved ones. Then, in January, the sports blog Deadspin dropped a bombshell: They could find no evidence of Manti Te’o’s girlfriend, Stanford student Lennay Kekua, having ever existed. In the light of this shocking revelation, details starting surfacing daily — Manti Te’o was the victim of an elaborate hoax perpetrated by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, during which the con man duped the football star by using friends and family to pose as the imaginary Kekua. The question, which Katie Couric pointedly asked Manti Te’o in his first televised interview since the whole scandal emerged, is this: did he really not know? He maintains his only lie was about meeting the figment of Tuiasosopo’s imagination in person.

Lance Armstrong on Oprah's Next ChapterLance Armstrong

Leave it to Oprah to get Lance Armstrong to finally divulge his dirty little secret — he did, in fact, rely on doping to win seven Tour de France titles. Oh, Lance. Why must you break our hearts so? Obviously, the issue had come up before. After dominating the event the first few years, the press started poking their nose into the possibility of steroid use. Armstrong, however, vehemently denied any such activity. The proverbial sh*t hit the fan when the USADA stripped the cyclist of his titles, based on doping and other improper behavior . He then came clean about riding dirty to Oprah, asserting he didn’t fess up earlier because he didn’t feel like he was cheating. We’re going to hold onto the hope that the fibber was at least telling the truth when he said he didn’t dope after his inspirational comeback from testicular cancer.

James Frey at a BooksigningJames Frey

Oprah may have gotten Lance Armstrong to admit he doped, but the queen of talk didn’t realize when she interviewed James Frey in 2006 that she was being duped. Frey landed on Winfrey’s radar after she read his alleged autobiography, A Million Little Pieces. When she selected it for her book club, people flocked to their nearest Barnes & Noble or neighborhood bookstore to pick up a copy. Soon, a bestseller was born. At the pinnacle of the book’s popularity, Winfrey had Frey on her show to talk about the hardships he chronicled in the tome but, sadly, it was soon revealed that most of the book was fabricated. Woe to the man who p*sses off Oprah, though — she had him on the show again to call him out on his betrayal and dishonesty, to which he replied that “demons” made him do it. Umm... uh huh.

Former President Bill ClintonBill Clinton

I don’t think anyone will soon forget the response from former President Bill Clinton when asked about his alleged affair with Monica Lewinsky. Now one of the most famous lines in modern politics — “I did not have sexual relations with that woman — ”will go down in history. But, as it turns out, not only did he have sexual relations with Lewinsky, but Bill got his thrills in some lewd and lascivious ways . And since the ol’ Arkansas boy did his fibbing under oath, he earned himself a place in the books as the second president to be impeached by the House of Representatives. Oddly enough, his sex scandal did little harm to his wellbeing — he probably gets paid more for speaking gigs these days than Paris Hilton.

Sarah Palin out at Fox News: No surprise, Palin quits

Sarah Palin is out at Fox News after contract negotiations fail. Palin made a reported $1 million per year, but Fox executives frequently complained she failed to meet ratings expectations.

Sarah Palin looks surprised.

Sarah Palin is out at Fox. Some say she quit Fox News, while others speculate she was given the cold shoulder by network executives. Palin was initially hired as a regular contributor for Fox News back in January 2008, around the same time her book, Going Rogue: An American Life, became a New York Times bestseller.

Networks pass on a second Sarah Palin reality show>>

Both Palin and Fox remain neutral regarding her removal from Fox airwaves. Bill Shine, the network's executive vice president, released a statement to the New York Times Friday evening in which he described Palin's role at Fox News as appreciated, but clearly no longer needed. Said Shine, "We have thoroughly enjoyed our association with Governor Palin. We wish her the best in her future endeavors." The New York Times reports before Palin was out at Fox, her contract earned her $1 million per year. However, she and Fox could not reach a deal when her contract ended in December 2012.

A trash-talking Sarah Palin biography>>

The former Republican vice presidential candidate appeared disgruntled with Fox at numerous points throughout their relationship, most recently in August 2012, during the Republican National Convention . Palin did not provide commentary for Fox News during the RNC and was quite upset about it; she took to her Facebook page to gripe. She wrote, "I'm sorry Fox cancelled my scheduled interviews tonight because I sure wanted to take the opportunity on the air to highlight Senator John McCain's positive contributions to America…"

Sarah Palin irritates Fox News, again>>

Gabriel Sherman, of New York Magazine, stated back in late August 2012 that "according to sources, the relationship at times has gotten so bad that much communication has been conducted via Palin's husband Todd."

The Atlantic Wire reports a source close to Palin also confirms that she's out at Fox, though the source makes it clear she quit. "It is my understanding that Governor Palin was offered a contract by Fox and she decided not to renew the arrangement." The source spoke to Real Clear Politics' Scott Conroy. Palin was Fox News' highest-paid contributor, but the network was often unhappy with her ratings. In turn, Palin often complained she received less-than-ideal segments.

No matter the reasoning, for now it's clear: Sarah Palin is out at Fox News.
