5 Reasons why women make better leaders than men

$

0

My response was immediate: “Women.”

It appears this question is making itself known in the universe, because at the iCONIC conference in Los Angeles this June, The Container Store CEO Kip Tindell gave a speech in which he said that he, too, believes that women make better leaders than men do, and gave three reasons why. So the results are in: Women really do make better leaders. Why? Here are five reasons:

#1: Women listen

I think women are born with an innate understanding that God gave us two ears and one mouth on purpose. While some (like significant others and children) might disagree, the fact is, women are great listeners. When someone talks to us, especially about a problem or concern, we give our undivided attention. We really want to hear what the other person has to say and be there for them in their time of need, an excellent quality in a leader.

#2: Women collaborate

Women have a genuine passion for working with others. We like to share ideas and come up with solutions that will be effective for everyone involved in the process. That means that as leaders, we’re good at giving every team member a chance to voice their opinion and be a part of the conversation.

#3: Women are accessible

Accessibility is not just about being physically available, it is about having an open mind and heart, and psychologists say that women are more adept at being open, likely because of their motherly instinct and desire to provide for others. This innate compassion means that women are more likely to be supportive of individuals at all levels of their organization, regardless of their rank or title.

#4: Women focus on personal growth

Women are readers and learners. We are very open to and interested in finding ways to continuously improve our personal skills. This focus on our development makes us more self-aware, which enables to us to have a very strong emotional intelligence, a key trait of successful leaders.

#5: Women motivate

Women are natural cheerleaders. We love discovering what motivates people into action and we are excited to hand out words of encouragement, thank-yous, gifts for jobs well done, and pats on the back, which could explain why Gallup’s 2015 State of the American Manager report says that people who work for women leaders are more engaged than those who work for men.

The business world needs more women leaders because, quite frankly, we are just better at leading people. With that in mind, I encourage all you women out there to use your natural talents and step up to leadership!

New TV show attempts to create gender parity in engineering

MacGyver

According to MacGyver creator, Lee Zlotoff, the show piqued the interest of a whole generation of young people, inspiring them to be just as crafty as the lead character. "I literally could not tell you how many times people have come up to me and said, 'I became an engineer, or I went into the sciences because of MacGyver,'" said Zlotoff.

Now, Zlotoff has partnered with the National Academy of Engineering and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering to develop a new "MacGyver-esque" show to inspire a new generation of engineers. Only this time, the lead character will be a woman.

More: True Detective finally steps up its game with its female characters

When I first heard about the competition, called "The Next MacGyver," I knew I had to enter. Inspiring young girls to explore science and technology is my mission. Real-life computer programmer Ada Lovelace is my muse. I put them together and created a TV show called Ada and the Machine and I'm pleased to share that it's been selected as one of 12 finalists in the competition.

Ada Lovelace

Image: Via Twitter

If you haven't heard of Ada Lovelace, she was born in England in 1815 and was the daughter of the scandalous poet Lord Byron. A brilliant mathematician, Lovelace is considered the world's first computer programmer (some even say hacker) for the work she did on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, a machine that could be programmed like a computer.

My show, Ada and the Machine, takes place in an 1830s Steampunk world where Lovelace and Babbage work with Scotland Yard's special task force, the Industrial Scoundrel Protection (ISP), to fight crime related to the Industrial Revolution.

The reason "The Next MacGyver" competition is so crucial to our future is because women are still massively under-represented in the sciences, particularly engineering. There are still hurtful stereotypes that women aren't as smart as men. Years into the tech revolution, Silicon Valley is still overwhelmingly male. One solution is to create more female role models on film and in television who are active in the sciences.

I firmly believe that putting a female engineer on TV every week in a family-friendly show can make a huge difference in the number of girls who grow up to become scientists. If we can achieve gender parity in the sciences, it will change technology for the better, creating a world where women actually participate in the scientific achievements America is known for and influence the future for the better.

I turned toward the suite’s sitting area. All the windows and doors were open in the softly lit room. Gauzy moonlit curtains fluttered. I sauntered behind the couch. When I patted the back cushions, inviting him over, his lips thinned.

Long, anxious moments passed as we stared at each other. Heartbeat... heartbeat... heartbeat. Then it seemed like curiosity forced him to stride over.

When he took a seat, I smiled, sidling around in front of him. I stepped forward until he had to make room for me, spreading his knees.

I played with the sash on the side of my dress. “Would you like me to take this off, Ruso?” Russian.

Curt nod.

I slowly untied the sash. Letting my dress hang open like a robe, I gave him a curtained glimpse of my provocative black demi bra and thong set.

More: A steamy romance read from Baby it's Cold Outside

I couldn’t read him, couldn’t tell if he liked the view or not. He looked so cold.

So why was I getting hot stripping for him? I glanced at his big, masculine hands. My nipples were taut, my panties growing moist. I never wore lingerie like this, and I felt hypersensitive after my waxing a couple of days ago.

I shimmied from my dress, tossing it to a neighboring seat. When I faced him in my underwear, he casually draped his arms along the back of the sofa.

“Turn in place for me.” He was so calm, detached even. This was like foreplay with a computer. A DDG computer. “Slowly.”

I reminded myself that I was playing the femme fatale. My two glasses of wine told me I was doing fine.

As I turned, I could feel his eyes on my cheeks, exposed in my tiny thong. Which only made me wetter. Furtive lubing would not be a problem. In fact, maybe I should leave my panties on for a little longer? It’d been a while since I’d had the time or energy to masturbate. What if I lost control?

Like everyone else on earth, when my body got turned on, my brain turned off. But mine was a total factory shutdown, a labor strike. I needed my wits to handle this guy.

I faced him again. Had his breaths shallowed a touch? “Show me your breasts. Let’s see if I like your size as much as you profess to.”

I removed my bra, tossing it in the direction of my dress. I was secretly proud of my pert breasts. They fit my body but were plump, with jutting nipples that were not quite pink and not quite tan. My small areolas were raised, giving the peaks a slightly puffy look.

When I squared my shoulders, the Russian’s nostrils flared — finally a hint of passion from him!

More: Caroline's new apartment comes with a side of sexy neighbor

“Very nice. I hadn’t thought the view from the front could compete with the back.”

Wow. An actual compliment. My attention was drawn downward. A very large erection pressed against the material of his slacks. Muy grande. Maybe too big? For all my fooling around, I’d only had intercourse with Edward, and he was nowhere near as well endowed.

“Continue.”

Strip totally?

Deciding against that, I stepped forward, straddling him. I rested my knees beside his hips, my hands on his shoulders. A breeze from the ocean drifted in, mingling with his intoxicating scent — a blend of sandalwood and simmering man. His scent made me tremble—it was like an unfair advantage, used to drug new escorts.

My eyes went wide; his narrowed.

I’d be taking his length inside me directly. The idea no longer filled me with hesitation. I shivered with desire. My nipples puckered even tighter, right before his eyes.

I wanted this man, this stranger.

Outrageously high C-section rate prompts new rules

$

At private hospitals in Brazil, the C-section rate is mind-boggling — around 85 percent of births there are surgical. It's definitely better in the country's public hospitals (around 45 percent), but it's still far from ideal.

However, there have been new rules put in place to combat this much-too-high rate. What are the rules, you ask?

  • Moms must be informed of the risks of Cesarean birth
  • Moms must sign a consent form
  • Doctors must be able to justify the surgical birth by keeping detailed records of labor and birth
  • Each woman will have a file on her pregnancy, which she can take with her if she changes doctors

These are all standard practices in the U.S., but by taking these additional steps in Brazil, it's hoped that the astronomically high rate begins to come down.

MoreHero grandpa saves baby from oncoming train

There is a pretty big concern, despite these new rules. It's not really an easy solution as it sounds on the surface, as BBC reports that private hospitals often book up with moms who want a scheduled delivery, leaving those who want a vaginal birth without a place to labor and deliver. Even worse, it's said that women in Brazil are often turned off by vaginal birth, and even doctors prefer the operating room because they feel it's less risk for them professionally.

C-sections are an amazing medical advancement, one that many mothers and children owe their lives to. Back in the "old days," some women suffered and died when vaginal delivery wasn't possible. But what should be reserved as an essential procedure when circumstances dictate it is sometimes being sought after as a first-line preference.

MoreMom-to-be sees dead grandmother in ultrasound image

While the C-section rate in the U.S. is lower than Brazil's, it is still pretty high. In 2013, the most recent year for which records are available, the rate was 32.7 percent. The World Health Organization suggests the ideal rate (which would show a true medical need) should be between 10 and 15 percent, so there is concern that surgical deliveries are being performed at an unnecessary pace.

While modern C-sections are efficient and generally safe, they do still carry some undesirable risks that are not present during most vaginal deliveries, such as excessive blood loss, damage to surrounding organs, blood clots and infection. This publication examines the trend towards more surgical births and what medical care providers should keep in mind as they work with moms-to-be through labor and delivery.

For moms, it can be tempting to schedule a C-section and know a baby's birth date in advance. It can be awesome for planning your leave from work, for example, or child care for older siblings. But for health reasons, it's often better to leave those surgical deliveries for true medical emergencies and situations, as your chances of having a subsequent vaginal birth are reduced — in addition to facing greater risk due to the delivery and recovery itself.

It will be interesting to see if these new rules in Brazil have the intended effect, because something definitely needs to be done, and sooner rather than later.

Awesome video shows disabilities don't get in the way of good sex (VIDEO)

That is, until a wonderful United Kingdom disability charity called Scope took matters into their own hands. The not-for-profit "exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same rights as everyone else." Essentially, they provide information and lend support to people with disabilities all over the United Kingdom. Moreover, in order to truly make a difference on a larger scale, they also raise awareness of a persisting problem worldwide — people don't know how to interact with the disabled.

More15 Disabilities you can't see with the naked eye

According to their website, two-thirds of the population feels uncomfortable around people with disabilities. This seems to be because people don't know what to do, and that anxiety leads them to do the wrong thing, like blatantly ignoring the disability, or drawing too much attention to it.

The organization's most recent awareness campaign — #EndtheAwkward — is attempting to end that awkwardness by showing the world that disabled people are no different than everyone else in their wants and needs. Since they're a bold group, they decided to go for it and address a more sensitive issue for anyone who already feels uncomfortable around disabled people — sexual expression. In light of International Kiss Day, they created a touching video that depicts how real people with disabilities have sexual relationships.

endtheawkward

endtheawkward

The description on the video says it succinctly, "we want to ‘kiss awkward goodbye’ by showcasing disabled and non-disabled couples kissing. By showing this unapologetically, we can help break down awkward barriers that currently exist." I have to say, this video gave me all the feels, and not just the emotional ones. The part where the couple's kissing in bed, and the man stops the woman from undoing her bra with his amputated arm so he could do it himself was nothing short of hot.

MoreMan with cerebral palsy shares how his disability inspired him to educate others

That, in essence, is what I think Scope is hoping everyone who watches this video starts to feel. Whether you're a paraplegic, blind, or an amputee, you're just as romantic, sexual and beautiful as any non-disabled person. That's not to say you're not also awkward and clunky in the bedroom sometimes, but who isn't? The point is, disabled people should not feel like they have to hide any aspect of themselves to make the rest of the world more comfortable. We all have unusual things about ourselves, it's just that disabled people are often more visible, and everyone else simply needs to get over it.

I know International Kiss Day has come and gone, but public displays of affection from disabled and non-disabled people alike are here to stay. So let's keep all of the awkward out in the open, and continue the conversation on #EndtheAwkward. Remember, it's about the connection, not the impairment.

Celebrity divorces and breakups: Here's how staged they really are

$

Every couple is a bit different, but there does seem to be some kind of basic timeline when it comes to celebs getting divorced or separating. It usually all starts with one (or both) parts of the duo being seen out and about sans partner, then it progresses to tales of trouble in paradise from an "inside source" before the couple publicly slams the allegations about their relationship.

And then, a good percentage of the time, said couple does end up breaking things off not long after the initial "rumors" started.

More: Ben Affleck takes heat as rumors of infidelity surface

Is it coincidence? Do the rumors drive a wedge between the partners? Or is the formulaic breakup pattern just another weird Hollywood well-thought-out scheme?

According to one Hollywood publicist to the stars, it's option C. In a recent interview with New York magazine, Rob Shuter, the man behind the PR curtain during breakups like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's and Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey's, revealed that that the public unraveling of high-profile relationships is often orchestrated. Shuter also explained how celeb breakups often share common elements.

Here's the anatomy of a celebrity breakup, straight from a real inside source.

1. There's a pact between the behind-the-scenes people

Shuter admitted that celebs don't always run straight to their PR rep to do damage control when their relationship hits the rocks. "Celebrities are people after all," Shuter said. "When troubles are happening in their personal lives and they haven't processed it, they're not always ready to call someone they pay, who may live in New York City."

So who do they talk to about it? Hair and makeup, of course. And that's exactly who reps rely on to provide them with inside information when their clients don't let them know what's going on. "The hair and the makeup people, they always seem to be the first to know," revealed Shuter. "Sometimes the publicist, the hair and makeup people, the car driver, the security — they'll have a little pact where they all tell each other what's going on."

2. Silence speaks a thousand words

Have you noticed that after rumors of a pending split hit the media, there's normally a lull between stories? That might be a sure sign that the stories hold some water. "It's when sources go silent — radio silent — that you know there's a problem," said Shuter. "With Ben (Affleck) and Jen (Garner), I'd heard rumors for about six months. When I started not getting texts back, or calls back, that's when I knew something was going on. If you can't find a source to defend the marriage, you know there's trouble."

We've definitely noticed this pattern: A smattering of stories from "sources" about fighting or a cheating scandal, only to be followed by the couple staying out of the limelight for a while until the smoke clears. It happened with Affleck and Garner, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, and countless other couples.

3. Reps aren't always the first to know of trouble, but they're far from the last

"I've known instances where a member of that couple has told their publicist before they've told their significant other," Shuter said.

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense, huh? Keeping your reputation intact is key when you're vying for hot jobs in Hollywood, so it kind of makes sense to get out in front of any breakup drama. It's cold, but it makes sense.

4. Publicists schedule breakup announcements

Shuter disclosed that it's not uncommon for PR machines to carefully plan when celebrities can officially announce a breakup, so as to not interfere with any projects the performers might be promoting. For instance, Affleck's reps might have chosen this time to disclose his divorce with Garner in hopes that the chatter will quieten by the time his upcoming film, Batman, is released.

"Sunshine Sachs is a major PR company. They're really smart with it," he said of Affleck's representatives. "Now that it's out there, he will probably have a very firm, carefully crafted answer. He can say, 'It's a private matter,' or, 'This is something that's heartbreaking to me,' or, 'we're still great friends.' He'll have a few stock answers that he can pull out, and then he'll move on to talk about the movie."

This would explain why celebs often publicly deny relationship trouble when the media is in a frenzy about an impending split. Not all rumors are real, after all, and if the celeb's rep tells them to deny what's going on until the right time, they have to make some kind of statement sooner or later. Like Shuter said, radio silence is a sure sign of trouble.

More: Report claims Ben Affleck was too close to his ex for his wife's liking

5. PR teams play favorites with media outlets

After each part of the couple calls their respective PR reps and the reps write a joint statement, they choose who to release the statement to — and it's not random. "Often you know which outlets these people prefer because they're always the ones that get it first," said Shuter.

According to Shuter, People used to be a favorite of many stars and when Simpson and Lachey broke up, the statement went to Us magazine first because Simpson had a relationship with them.

6. Planned paparazzi photo ops can come into play

Shuter says that not all celebs go into hiding during a breakup, some actually revel in the attention — reality celebs in particular. "You'll stage the paparazzi when they're walking down the street looking very sad, wearing black," he explained. "It's totally overt, to the point where you tell them the time to be there. 'She'll be in Central Park, wearing black, sitting on a bench, and she'll be there for 10 minutes. Fine, see you at 12:01."

Gotham's Joker and Shameless' Ian are basically the same person

$
0
0

Until he appeared as Jerome on Gotham, Monaghan was best known for his role on Showtime's hit show, Shameless, where he played the tortured and beautiful Ian Gallagher. For five seasons, we've watched (often tearfully) as Ian struggled with his identity and the mental sickness that wreaked havoc on his psyche. While we in no way want to suggest that Ian is a villain, we can't help but think of some striking similarities between Monaghan's two major roles. For better or worse, The Joker and Ian have some things in common.

More: Who will Detective Gordon's rebound be? We think we know!

1. That demented grin

Monaghan confirmed his Gotham identity with a single, brilliant and eerie photo on Instagram and it reminded us of two other grins. One, of Heath Ledger's time as The Joker before his unfortunate demise. The other was Monaghan/Ian's coked-out grin on Shameless. You know what we're talkin' about...

Cameron Monaghan as Joker

Cameron Monaghan as Joker

2. They've both spent time in a psych ward

Sure, the two characters were in there for very different reasons. Ian is bipolar, like his mother, and often spirals out of control. He's never killed anyone. The Joker is the Crown Prince of Crime. Instead of shifting from catatonic sadness to grinning, illogical euphoria (like Ian), various iterations have him going from a joke-telling mischief-maker to a truly insane, murderous villain. They're very different people, but both have spent time locked up for the parts of their minds they just can't seem to control.

More: The Batman origin story's pilot brought out all our favorite comic characters

3. Both are ultimately sad people

As we saw, particularly in The Dark Knight, The Joker isn't entirely unfeeling. And while he doesn't necessarily like to dwell on his unhappiness, he is, ultimately, unhappy. Perhaps the only thing that brings The Joker true joy is tormenting Batman. Ian, meanwhile, tries continually to find happiness: in his relationship with his boss, his friendship with Mickey's sister, in the armed forces and in his relationship with Mickey. In all instances, happiness usually ends up rather fleeting.

4. Ian and The Joker have committed serious crimes

We know The Joker's crimes, but we tend to write off Ian's because we love him so much. Over the seasons, Ian has done serious drugs, stolen and wrecked a helicopter, stolen his brother's identity and kidnapped a baby, among other things. Their reasons for committing those crimes aren't always similar, but sometimes they are. Sometimes it's just about getting enveloped in something other than your own thoughts... and cutting loose. Luckily, Ian's version of cutting loose has yet to result in a body count.

5. Both have put their significant others through hell

Harley Quinn and The Joker met at Arkham Asylum, where Harley worked as a psychiatrist. Despite knowing the signs of psychopathy and having the intellect that should keep her from falling prey to The Joker's manipulations, she continually has. She continually helped The Joker escape the Asylum and upon seeing his mangled body after a particularly bad run-in, she was driven insane and soon found herself donning her jester's suit and working alongside her evil and insane boyfriend. Ian puts Mickey through a different sort of torture. He's never actively manipulated Mickey, but this last season was particularly difficult for them between Ian excitedly stealing luggage as a way to make money and then running off with Mickey's son. In a manic high, Ian has partied and slept with numerous other men, but at the end of the day, Mickey is there to scoop up his broken "Orange Boy" and bring him home.

More: We've been 100 percent on-board with this show since SDCC2014

While Monaghan has stepped into an iconic role and will suffer major backlash if he doesn't perfectly nail his role as The Joker, all signs point to his casting being a true success. Shameless' Ian is far from being a murderous, villainous psychopath, but we can't help but think everything Monaghan and Ian have been through together so far has helped prepare the actor for his time as The Joker on Gotham. Only time will tell, though.

Chrissy Teigen posts John Legend's butt to call out Instagram

The model called out the photo-sharing network's policies last week, when snaps she shared from her topless W magazine shoot were repeatedly removed from her profile.

Now, in a photo of her husband's mostly bare behind, Teigen appears to be calling attention to the sexist nature of Instagram's nudity policies — she didn't caption the photo at all, except to tag @Instagram.

Image: Chrissy Teigen/Instagram

Technically, according to Instagram's own policies, the picture of Teigen's hubby John Legend should be removed. But whether it will remains to be seen.

Instagram's nudity policy was updated in April after the site caught flak for regularly removing images of topless women, even shots of breastfeeding moms and artistic representations of the female form. The site's "community guidelines" section now reads, "We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Instagram. This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks. It also includes some photos of female nipples, but photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding are allowed. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too."

Teigen's topless shots, which were repeatedly removed, were given filters that made them look like oil paintings and charcoal drawings, but Instagram still took them down.

But since male nipples on Instagram are OK, while female nipples are removed, it seems like Teigen is baiting the site to see whether male butts will be allowed even though female butts are not.

3 Natural ways to get rid of gas and bloating

$
0
0

The two most common causes of gas are the air swallowed while eating and drinking, and the digestion of food by bacteria in the large intestine. Aside from gastrointestinal distress caused by serious underlying diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome, most gas and/or bloating can be cured fairly quickly and naturally with common herbs and spices. Natural remedies like the ones listed below are of particular psychological benefit to those who really don’t want to throw a package of gas relief tablets down in front of a crowded checkout line. Sometimes a little mystery is a good thing.

1. Ginger

Ginger is a pungent, yellow-green rhizome, and can be found in the produce section of supermarkets. As a medicinal root, ginger is frequently taken for nausea and upset stomach, but it is just as effective for gastrointestinal distress. Gas that has occurred as a result of digestive tract lining irritation can be controlled by ginger, since it increases salivary and stomach secretions, which coat the digestive tract and soothe it. Shredding a one-inch piece of ginger root on a cheese grater, and adding it to two cups of boiling water with honey and lemon, makes an effective and natural gas relief tea with a delightful bite to it.

2. Bitter herbs: Gentian, centuary, chamomile and mugwort

Like ginger, bitter herbs induce the secretion of digestive juices which can help alleviate gas pain. Gentian, a bitter flowering plant which is used to flavor some liquors as well as the soft drink Moxie, is very effective at calming an upset stomach as well as reducing or eliminating gastric distress. Centuary is another popular bitter herb for treating digestive and gastric ailments, and is also used as a laxative.

Chamomile tea is often drank in the evening to soothe tension at the end of the day and promote healthy sleep, but its bitter qualities also stimulate the gastric juices that help ease the digestive irregularities and irritation that cause gas. Mugwort, a more tolerable relative of wormwood, has the same anti-gas properties.

All of these herbs are usually sold in dried tea formats at health food stores, and occasionally stocked in the natural sections of chain supermarkets.

3. Spice seeds: Fennel, caraway, cumin and anise

The essential oils in fennel seeds and cumin seeds have anti-spasmodic effects on the intestinal smooth muscle, and are used to prevent intestinal gas to great effect. The essential oils in anise seeds and caraway seeds also have intestinal anti-spasmodic properties. Fennel, anise and caraway seeds have been acknowledged by the Commission E of Germany, an herbal medicine guide, as being highly effective gastrointestinal distress reducers. Caraway is most frequently found in baked goods, such as Irish soda bread, while cumin and star anise are more often found in Indian and Asian foods.

More: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West stir up discussion on gender selection

Hollywood Life reports that the famous rapper is stepping up for sister-in-law Kourtney Kardashian's son while she and Scott Disick are in the middle of a messy split.

The site reports that over Fourth of July weekend, Kourtney stayed home in Los Angeles with her two younger kids while Scott partied it up on the other side of the country in Miami. Meanwhile, Kourtney's oldest son, Mason, went with Kanye and his wife, Kim Kardashian, to celebrate the holiday on a yacht in New York. Also present: Kim's BFF Larsa Pippen and her young daughter, Sophia.

"Kanye took Mason and Sophia to the movies after Kim and Larsa went to lunch at Cipriani," a source reportedly told Page Six.

More: Kanye West has a very specific reason he's excited to have a boy

Meanwhile, Scott's wild partying reportedly included teenage girls and plenty of booze.

"People were drinking," a witness told Radar Online. "At one point, Scott was completely passed out on the couch."

Good for Kanye for assuming daddy duties while Scott is clearly unable to step up to the plate.

The report goes on to say Scott hasn't even set foot in his family's California home in nearly a month. Last week, he was caught cozying up to celebrity stylist Chloe Bartoli during a European vacation. That move was reportedly the last straw Kourtney needed to break off their famously troubled relationship .

Even though Kourtney seems serious about moving on, she's taken Scott back after several breakups and he doesn't seem to think this one will be any different.

"Scott is completely convinced he'll get Kourtney back when he wants to get her back," an insider told Hollywood Life. "He is not taking the breakup as the last straw, and though he is obviously enjoying being single, his ego is so extreme that he intends on getting her back on his time frame."

More: Chrissy Teigen posts John Legend's butt to call out Instagram

The hunky Orange Is the New Black star recently joined the #FreeTheNipple movement in the most perfect way we can imagine: by Photoshopping his nipples. Photoshopping has been gaining popularity among #FreeTheNipple supporters for weeks now, as women Photoshop male nipples over their own to illustrate how ridiculous gender bias can be when it comes to going topless.

Except McGorry flipped the protest around: He Photoshopped Miley Cyrus' and Chrissy Teigen's nipples on top of his. Both women have fallen victim to social media nudity policies and had their topless pics removed from the Instagram profiles.

Image: Matt McGorry/Facebook

More: Allowing some nudity on Instagram could help us all be more body positive

"It should be up to the individual woman to decide if she wants to show them, just like men have the choice," McGorry wrote in the photo's caption, where he called out our society that "so heavily sexualizes women."

He continued, "Part of the stand of #FreeTheNipple is about the right of women to claim what their breasts and nipples mean to THEM, and not have that be defined by how men and much of society decides what their boobies mean. At this point, if you're still clinging to the notion of 'well, that's just the way it's been,' then you might reconsider thinking of yourself as a rational and progressive person."

McGorry is only the latest in a growing number of stars to join the movement. Cyrus and Teigen have both spoken out against heavy censorship of women's bodies, along with Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, Scout Willis and Suki Waterhouse.

"You might be thinking to yourself, there are way more important issues out there than women being able to expose their bumpy buttons whenever men can," McGorry writes. "But it's not just about getting an even tan; it's one piece of the puzzle of creating deep change in the way our society objectifies women and creates these different standards for men and women (and other genders). At the heart of it, it's simply about gender equality and equal rights."

More: Kristin Cavallari's not really into parties anymore

The pregnant former The Hills star took to Instagram to plug a new product she's endorsing: fake bangs attached to a headband. The only problem? They're fake bangs.

"Wanted to change up my look today with bangs! They are attached to a headband to make it super easy. Check them out www.secretbangs.com," she captioned the pic of herself cradling her super-cute baby bump in a super-cute red dress and super-cute fringe boots… wearing the super-not-cute hair accessory.

The internet reacted appropriately.

"What the f***ing f***," one commenter wrote.

"Just no," another chimed in, while some were a little more diplomatic about the situation, writing things like, "Sorry girl but those bangs just aren't the best look for you. Thankfully you didn't actually cut them," and, "I am not a fan of this look. But she's the cutest pregnant girl, ever!"

The link leads to a website showing models looking equally terrible in their Secret Bangs, along with an infomercial starring Cavallari and more models, who try to show prospective customers all the freedom one can achieve with fake bangs that are made out of "keratin fiber," because that sounds like it'll seamlessly blend right in.

According to the video, wearers can achieve looks ranging from "flirty casual to daytime professional to nighttime glamorous."

And the video even shows that dudes will stop in the street and do double-takes just to stare at your bangs when you walk by. You can have it all with Secret Bangs, ladies!

It's a good thing the video is ridiculous enough to overshadow how ridiculous Cavallari looks in her fake bangs, but we still only have one thing to say to the normally fashion-forward star: Stop trying to make Secret Bangs happen. It's never going to happen!

EACH Woman Act would ensure abortion coverage for all

This groundbreaking legislation for reproductive justice is the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage In Health Insurance, aka the EACH Woman Act. Introduced by Democratic Congresswomen from California, Illinois, Colorado and New York, the bill has over 70 Congressional co-sponsors as well as the support of 36 women's health, rights and justice advocacy organization.

This bill has the potential to make a real and meaningful impact on both women and their families. One out of every three women will have an abortion, but not all can either afford or access that specific type of reproductive health care because of various barriers. The EACH Woman Act will help overcome challenges that face many women seeking abortion care.

For over 40 years, since the Hyde Amendment passed, abortion access has continued to be restricted all over the country. The Hyde Amendment specifically restricts abortion coverage under Medicaid, Medicare and CHIP. The Hyde Amendment impacts many women, as recent surveys indicate that one in six women of reproductive age are enrolled in Medicaid.

The bill — which flies in the face of the Hyde Amendment and everything it has done to curtail abortion rights — creates two specific standards for reproductive health. First, the EACH Woman Act ensures that every woman who is insured via the federal government (including Medicare or Medicaid) will be covered for all pregnancy-related care, including abortion. Second, it makes it so federal, state and local legislators cannot interfere with private insurances to prevent them from providing abortion coverage.

A press release from All Above All stressed how this bill can impact not only women, but their families and communities as well.

Whether she has private or government-funded health insurance, every woman should have coverage for a full range of pregnancy-related care, including abortion. When health programs for women with low incomes cover birth control and abortion – not just childbirth – and people can plan if and when to have children, it’s good for them and for society as a whole.

The EACH Woman Act is crucial because it offers up a level playing field. Creating a family and making important life-impacting decisions does not become a matter of circumstance, location, insurance coverage or finances.

KFC Chizza commercial is the craziest thing you'll see all day (VIDEO)

Just days ago, KFC Hong Kong introduced their new Napoli Crispy Pizza Chicken. And now KFC Philippines has unleashed the Chizza.

It's being billed as "the craziest thing to happen to chicken and pizza" but I have to disagree.

I say the craziest thing to happen to chicken and pizza is this commercial. Take a peek.

Was I wrong?

A fried chicken crust pizza topped with regular ol' pizza toppings? Sure. That makes some sense. Promoting said pizza to a jingle of "I Will Survive" lyrics mashed up with product descriptors? Not sure that makes quite as much sense. But I kind of love it.

I wonder if Gloria Gaynor is a fan of Chizza?

We tried Lay's new mystery chips and it just left us with more questions

There have been some winners and a few "Why would they ever make these?" contenders (hello, Cappuccino flavor!)

This year, Lay's kicked it up a notch by leaving the flavor off the bag and having the chip eaters guess the flavor. Fun, right? This is just like when Harry and his friends opened a bag of Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans at least we won't get dirt or earwax flavor, though right?

Our editors and interns taste tested the mystery flavors. Here's our take.

Mystery flavor #1. Quotables: "This smells really weird." "I can't even tell what it's supposed to be it's like, fishy."

Our flavor guesses: Old Bay, Olive oil and pepper, steak and potatoes, oregano flatbread, oregano and chicken

Mystery flavor #2. Quotables: "Smells like dust." "This tastes exactly like something, I just don't know what."

Our flavor guesses: Grilled corn, egg drop soup, generic seasoning packet

Mystery flavor #3. Quotables: "It tastes sweet to me." "It tastes like ketchup chips from Canada."

Our flavor guesses: Jolly Ranchers, basil and tomatoes, fire-roasted tomato

Mystery flavor #4. Quotables: "This one tastes like normal chips."

Our flavor guesses: Chives & parmesan, sour cream, loaded baked potato, sour cream and onion

All in all, #4 seemed to be the best, although #2 was eaten the most in an attempt to try to figure out what the heck is tasted like. Our only hint? "All were inspired by the unique and distinct tastes of America from coast to coast." The hint did very little to help us in our guesses, but check out Twitter for other takes on the mystery flavor. The brand will debut an oversized vending machine July 10 in Los Angeles that will dispense the mystery chips.

As a working mom, it isn't every day that you get an opportunity to try something adventurous and so completely different than anything you have experienced before. I welcomed this challenge with open arms, but I would be lying if I didn't say there were also a lot of anxiety and nerves that came along with it.

In the end, Becka was so nice and such a great instructor! She really made me feel like I could do it and gave me the technique and confidence to give it a go. This experience definitely inspired me to step out more and to find my fun in new and creative ways. It didn't hurt to do it all in these fun, hot pink Busy Day Mesh Flats either. Oprah Magazine fat-shames curvy women for wearing crop tops (PHOTO)

More: Oprah's producers share their favorite moments from the show

O didn't mean to, but they accidentally started another body-positive movement when they rudely suggested that only flat-tummy-sporting women should rock crop tops. The incident happened in a recent issue of the magazine within their Q&A section. The question was simple, "Can I pull off a crop top?" The answer should have been simple, too. Instead, the writer for the section followed up with a fat-shaming and rather judgmental answer. "If (and only if!) you have a flat stomach, feel free to try one," the magazine suggested. Um, what?

One reader stumbled across O's terrible advice, took a snap of the section and posted to Instagram to unleash her (rightful) anger on the subject.

More: M.I.A. makes serious racial profiling claims against Oprah

It wasn't long until her post had turned into outrage across the internet. Women of all shapes and sizes took to Instagram to post pictures in crop tops and "letting it all hang out" using the hashtag, #RockTheCrop. The response was overwhelming and, honestly, rather inspiring. We're often our own biggest critics, but this fast and furious movement really showed women how to have confidence in their own skin. There wasn't a bit of hate or fat-shaming to be seen amidst the beautiful pics.

To be fair, a spokeswoman for O has issued a statement. The magazine said, "We support, encourage and empower all women to look great, feel confident and live their best lives — in this case, we could have expressed it better. We appreciate the feedback and will be more mindful going forward."

We take minor issue with this, though. "We could have expressed it better" seems to imply that they wrote something vague and it was misconstrued. No. "If (and only if!)" seems pretty adamant to us. It also seems like the exact opposite of support, encouragement or empowerment.

For better or for worse, when I reflect on my 20s, I realize that I always seem to get comfortable, and then most of the time without realizing it get out of my comfort zone again. Too comfortable in my job, then I decide to open my own business. Been doing the same workout for too long, try something completely new that requires a new skill. Wearing the same long hair for a while, cut it all off. Staying in the same city for too long, up and move to a new city where I know no one.

Sometimes I do it because I know the only way to grow and improve is to step out again and make a change. It is scary, but it's thrilling and challenging (in a good way), too.

I had the opportunity to partner up with Crocs and SheKnows to do something I've never done before. Can we say #ExtremePogoSticking? Who has ever thought about that? I know I hadn't! Check out the video above to see if I could actually do it... (Spoiler alert: it's way harder than it looks... ) and check out the adorable Crocs sandals I got to wear!

The message of the experience is a good one: Try something that scares you. Keep trying over and over and over again. And when the going gets tough, don't give up. I want to challenge you: Whether it's big or small, #FindYourFun and get out of your comfort zone!

Why you should throw away your antibacterial toothpaste ASAP

$

In this post, I'll answer questions about whether triclosan is safe as an ingredient in toothpaste and how this affects you.

Is triclosan dangerous?

The newest studies show that triclosan alters hormone regulation in animals, might contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant germs and might harm the immune system.

Many of these studies are being challenged, however, for not using the same amount of triclosan in the study as humans are exposed to via toothpaste.

Beyond the research, recently surfaced documents are showing that the research that the FDA used to assess triclosan’s safety was actually paid for by Colgate. The FDA will now be re-evaluating the research on triclosan.

We do know that triclosan remains in your system long after you have brushed your teeth. About 75 percent of the United States population has triclosan present in their urine. It has also been found in breast milk and blood.

How can I avoid triclosan?

There are plenty of triclosan-free toothpaste options available; just check the ingredient list on the box.

Most toothpaste manufacturers list the ingredients on the box, not the tube, so you might have to head to the store to find out what’s actually in your toothpaste.

Should I avoid triclosan?

Until there’s a more definitive conclusion on the safety of triclosan, I’m not taking the risk and I recommend you don’t either.

Here’s why: the risk-reward ratio just doesn’t make sense. The purpose of triclosan is to help prevent gingivitis and cavities, but you can do this without a chemical with a proper brushing and flossing technique and regular dental checkups.

If you’re concerned about missing out on triclosan’s anti-gingivitis and anti-cavity properties, don’t be! You can prevent gum disease and cavities without chemicals:

  • Floss your teeth after meals or twice per day. This is one of the most effective ways to keep your mouth healthy and prevent gum disease and cavities. Make sure you schedule regular teeth cleanings to have your teeth cleaned professionally. This is crucial because it is not possible to remove all of the plaque and tartar buildup with home brushing.
  • Make sure you drink plenty of water. Drinking water will wash away any food particles that get stuck between your teeth. It also prevents excess plaque buildup between flossing and brushing.
  • Incorporate probiotics to promote healthy bacteria. This will even out the ratio of good to bad bacteria in your mouth and create an environment for vibrant oral health.
  • Increase the alkalinity in your mouth. Anything that makes your mouth more alkaline is always helpful as this decreases the chance for harmful bacteria to develop. Raw vegetables are great for doing this very thing.

10 Lessons families can learn from Teen Beach Movie 2

$

Disney Channel's newest original movie, Teen Beach Movie 2, has some good morals and I'm glad my family watched it together. At first I was almost outraged at a continuity issue at the start of the sequel that didn't quite bridge back to the original like I thought it should. But reminding myself these three things helped:

1. I'm a menopausal, middle-aged woman.

2. I'm a menopausal, middle-aged woman.

3. I'm a menopausal, middle-aged woman!

My mantra settled me down and I'm glad it did. Otherwise, I might have missed several twists that Disney spun into the story and the empowering message it provided to children, especially girls.

The story follows the relationship of Mac and Brady. In the first movie, Mac was about to leave the island to attend a college prep school on the mainland and Brady found out the day before she was to leave. Mac decided to go for one last surf before her trip and was going to catch the gnarliest wave to hit the island in 30 years. A storm was approaching and Brady rushed out to call Mac back to the beach, but they were both pulled under the current and flushed into an alternate reality that happened to be Brady's favorite beach movie, Wet Side Story, which was set in 1962. Mac encourages the girls in the 1960s movie to be themselves, not to dress to please boys and that they can do anything they want. Mac and Brady finally leave the movie world behind and return to their own reality, setting the stage for a sequel.

So, Teen Beach Movie 2 was that sequel. In it, the movie characters end up in today's world. My husband, daughter and I laughed so hard during parts of this movie! Seeing our daughter react to characters from the 1960s movie in today's time was priceless. It gave us a good chance to talk about style then and now and changes in technology. It also gave us a chance to discuss the civil rights movement and feminism.

OK. So I don't want to give much of the movie away, but I'm happy to share the Top 10 lessons we can learn from Teen Beach Movie 2:

1. One person can change the world. Mac didn't realize she did it, but her influence on the female lead in the 1960s movie (Lela) did just that.

2. Don't take education for granted. Somewhere out there, another person wishes they had the chance to go to school and become whatever they want to be.

3. Dare to be different. If someone isn't nice to you because you're different, it's probably because they don't know how to handle change.

4. Keep a song in your heart. Music offers healing powers, whether you're going through a breakup or trying to fit in. Music is a universal language.

5. Smiles are contagious. Most of us probably don't smile enough, even though we all know it takes more muscles to frown than to smile.

6. Don't settle. You may not be able to change an age-old stereotype, but you can change yourself. Eventually, others will see the stereotype for what it is.

7. Your "meant to be" is just that. It may take a different path to get there or take longer, but you will come into your own destiny.

8. Talk out your problems. Assuming only leads to miscommunication.

9. Talk about your dreams. If you don't, people may think you have no direction or goals for yourself; and you may miss the opportunity to solve a problem or save the world.

10. Wait for your happy ending. Times may get rough and sometimes, just when you think a happy ending is imminent, something drastically changes. Hang in there! It's on its way!

Thanks, Disney Channel, for giving us another chance to laugh and learn with our daughter. Just when we think every story has been told, you come up with another one to inspire, entertain and implant infectious tunes inside our heads. Do we want a Teen Beach Movie 3? Yes, please!
