Busy boxes are a great alternative to traditional learning as well as to keeping kids entertained at home, but customizing a busy box based on your destination also makes your road trip whine-free. Kimberly Kulp, director of marketing and product development at Bridgeway Academy, shares her no-fail formula for assembling busy boxes for home and on the road.

  • Busy boxes should be filled with activities kids can do on their own. Everything in the busy box should be self-directed with minimal adult intervention. "By providing them with the opportunity to explore new ways of thinking, children are more likely to develop their own way of problem-solving."
  • Busy box should be personalized and fun. The key to engaging your child is to fill your busy box with items that appeal to your child. "When choosing what to include, keep your child's learning style and personality in mind and you'll get more mileage out of the activities."

  • Busy box should be portable. Pack your busy box in a tote bag or small box to take it on the road. "Keep your destination in mind when choosing activities and you'll not only entertain your kids during the journey but also find them more engaged and excited when you finally arrive at your destination."

  • Keep your busy box up-to-date. "Organic learning happens best when children can make immediate connections with what they experience, so reserve spring activities for spring boxes and winter activities for winter boxes."

  • Bring out the busy boxes at different times. "Busy boxes are great for road trips, but should be used during free time or for teaching as well to avoid having your child associate the boxes with just one activity. If you are a homeschooling parent, plan your busy box times around those subjects that are most difficult and gain valuable, undisturbed time with your homeschooler."

INTERVIEW: Linda Francis Lee's The Glass Kitchen will leave you wanting seconds

SheKnows: Give us the Twitter-length pitch for The Glass Kitchen.

Linda Francis Lee: Portia flees Texas in a storm of betrayal and is shipwrecked on the island of Manhattan with nothing more than her grandmother's cookbooks.

(As someone who loves the long form of the novel, Twitter is always a challenge for me!)

5 Mouthwatering books that mix food with fiction >>

SK: You yourself, are a native Texan who now calls New York City home. Is this book based on experiences in your own life? What inspired you to write The Glass Kitchen?

LFL: With my entire family still living in Texas, my husband and I have created a sort of family here in NYC. It has been through long, lovely dinners with our close friends here that I was reminded of growing up in Texas and my mother's own long, lovely dinner parties. It made me think of how sitting around the table with good food creates closeness and bonds, creates family.

The Hundred-Foot Journey: Why you should read it before the film comes out >>

SK: So far, you've had rave reviews from authors such as Elin Hilderbrand and Jen Lancaster. What do you think makes The Glass Kitchen such an "irresistible read," as Hilderbrand puts it?

LFL: I have been blown away by the support from other authors. There is no greater gift than that sort of support.

As to what makes The Glass Kitchen work, I hope it is the combination of the bonds of sisters and the intensity of new love, combined with the richness of food that has drawn readers in.

Lounging around with Jen Lancaster >>

SK: Did you encounter any challenges while writing this book? If so, what were they and how did you overcome them?

LFL: I should never admit this, but . . . I had to get back into the kitchen! I had to put Portia's spin on the recipes she makes. In the past, I have been known for my kitchen disasters, and I had a few as I got back into cooking. But slowly it really did return, and I felt as though I had circled back to a time when my mother, sister and I created meals for all those long lovely dinner parties my mother always gave.

SK: What do you hope readers take away from The Glass Kitchen?

LFL: Despite all the talk about food in the book, really this is a book about family. If there is a main theme, it is the sense that everyone needs "family" — be it born into or cobbled together from dear friends — and that as frustrating as family can be, it is that foundation that makes life worthwhile, a jumping-off point for everything else you do. It is through the support of family that we can make it through the bumps we hit in the road, and Portia hit a big bump that sent her reeling off and landed in NYC.

SK: As the author of 21(!) novels, what the best piece of advice you have for writers out there?

LFL: I was lucky enough to have my first fiction writing professor start the very first class with: Writers Write Whether They Feel Like it Or Not. Coming up with story ideas is the easy part. I had to develop self-discipline. I had to learn to put the pages in every day, whether they are good pages or not. For me, it's far easier to edit existing pages than staring at a blank page and needing to fill it.

SK: Is there anything else you want to add?

LFL: I loved writing The Glass Kitchen. Portia was so true and good regardless of the way people had betrayed her. Gabriel, a man always used to getting his way, was so intense in his desire of Portia, and also his need to try to figure out how to be a single parent. And then there is Ariel. I love 12-year-old Ariel, a girl who never thinks to edit what she says. It was so freeing to write her! And I hope readers will love their story.

Linda Francis Lee, The Glass Kitchen

On the morning her sister went missing, Portia Cuthcart woke up to thoughts of blueberries and peaches.

The taste of fruit filled her mouth, so sweet, so real, as if she'd been eating in her dreams. With a groggy yawn, she scooted out of bed. She pulled on her favorite fluffy slippers and big-girl's robe, then shuffled into the tiny kitchen of the double-wide trailer on the outskirts of Willow Creek, Texas. Without thinking about what she was doing, she pulled blueberries from the icebox and peaches from the fruit bin.

She might have been only seven years old, but she was smart enough to know that her mother would have a fit if she pulled out knives, or did anything near the two-burner hot plate. Instead, Portia pulled the peaches apart, catching the sticky-sweet juice on her tongue as it ran down her fingers. She found a slice of angel food cake wrapped in plastic and plopped the fruit on top.

Just as she stood back, satisfied with what she had made, her parents tumbled into the trailer like apples poured out of a bushel basket, disorderly, frantic.

Portia's oldest sister, Cordelia, followed. "Olivia's missing," Cordelia stated with all the jaundiced arrogance of a thirteen-year-old convinced she had the answers to everyone's ills. "Disappeared," she clarified with a snap of her fingers, "just like that."

Portia knitted her brow, her hair a cloud of whipped-butter curls dancing around her face. Olivia was always in trouble, but she usually did bad stuff right in front of their eyes. "Nobody disappears just like that, Cordie. You're exaggerating."

Her mother didn't seem to hear. Mama stared at the fruit and cake.

"Don't be mad," Portia blurted. "I didn't use any knives."

Her mother dropped to her knees in front of Portia. "Peaches and blueberries. Olivia's favorites. Why did you make this?"

Portia blinked, pushing a curl out of her eye. "I don't know. I woke up thinking about them."

For a second, her mother looked stricken; then she pressed her lips together. "Earl," she said, turning to Daddy, "Olivia’s down by the far horse pasture, near the peach tree and blueberry patch."

Her parents' eyes met before they glanced back at Portia. Then her mother stood and pushed Daddy out the door. Even though the emergency was over, Mama's face was still tense, her eyes dark.

Twenty minutes later, the missing eleven-year-old Olivia pranced up the three metal steps of the trailer in front of Daddy, her lips stained with blueberries, her dress splotched with peach juice, flowers tangled in her hair.

It was the first time food gave Portia an answer before a question had been asked.

Not an hour after Olivia was found, Portia and her mother were in the family's ancient pickup truck, bumping along the dirt roads of backwater Texas until they came to her grandmother's café, a place that had been handed down through generations of Gram's ancestors. The Glass Kitchen. Portia loved how its whitewashed clapboard walls and green tin roof, giant yawning windows, and lattice entwined with purple wisteria made her think of doll houses and thatch-roofed cottages.

Excited to see Gram, Portia jumped out of the old truck and followed her mother in through the front door. The melting-brown-sugar and buttery-cinnamon smells reminded her that The Glass Kitchen was not for play. It was real, a place where people came from miles around to eat and talk with Portia's grandmother.

Portia smiled at all the regulars, but her mother didn't seem to notice anyone, which was odd because Mama always used her best company manners wherever they went. But today she walked straight toward Gram, who sat at her usual table off to the side. Gram always sat in the same place, watching the goings-on, doling out advice, and making food recommendations for all those who asked. And everyone asked. Portia had a faint memory of a time when Gram actually did the cooking, but now she left it to others, to hired help who stayed hidden behind swinging doors.

"She has it," was all Mama said.

Gram sat back, the sun streaming through the windows, catching in the long gray hair she pulled back in a simple braid. "I suspected as much."

Portia didn't understand what was happening, then was surprised when Gram turned to her and beckoned her close. "You have a gift, Portia. A knowing, just like me, just like generations of your ancestors. Now it's my job to teach you how to use it."

Mama pressed her eyes closed, steepling her hands in front of her face.

Despite her mama's frown, Portia was excited about this knowing thing. It made her feel special, chosen, and as each day passed, she began to walk around with a new sense of purpose, pulling apart more peaches and making creations in a way that set her older sisters' teeth on edge. Cordelia and Olivia weren't nearly as happy about the special gift Portia supposedly had.

But four months later, the thick Texas air was sucked dry when the girls' daddy was shot dead in a hunting accident. Four months after that, their mama died, too. The official report cited cause of death as severe cardiac arrhythmia, but everyone in town said she'd died of a broken heart.

Stunned and silenced, Portia and her sisters moved in with Gram above the restaurant. Cordelia found comfort in books, Olivia in flowers. Portia found comfort when Gram started bringing her into the kitchen in earnest. But strangely, Gram didn't mention one thing about the knowing, much less teach her anything about it. Mostly Gram taught her the simple mechanics of cooking and baking.

Still, that worked. The Glass Kitchen was known to heal people with its slow-cooked meals and layered confections, and it healed Portia, too. Gradually, like sugar brought to a slow boil, Portia began to ease out of a brittle state and find a place for herself among the painted-wood tables and pitted silverware in a way Cordelia and Olivia never did.

And then it began to happen in earnest, like the dream of peaches and blueberries, but more real, more frequent.

Without a single one of those promised lessons from her grandmother, Portia began to see and taste food without having it in front of her, the images coming to her like instincts, automatic and without thought. She found that she knew things without having to be taught. Rich dark chocolate would calm a person who was hiding their anxiety. Hot red chili mixed with eggs first thing in the morning relieved symptoms of someone about to succumb to a terrible cold. Suddenly her world made sense, as if she had found a hidden switch, the meaning of what she was supposed to do blazing to life like a Christmas tree lighting up in a burst of color.

During that first school year, and the ones that followed, without her parents, Portia spent her days studying and her nights and weekends in the kitchen. During the summers, Portia and her sisters traveled to New York City to stay with Gram's sister. Great-aunt Evie had moved away forty years earlier, escaping a prescribed life that boxed her in. Once in New York, Evie became an actress on Broadway, famous enough to buy a town house on the Upper West Side.

"This place will be yours one day," Evie told the girls.

All three sisters loved the old town house that rose up from the city sidewalk like a five-layer wedding cake decorated with perfect fondant icing. Cordelia and Olivia promised each other that as soon as they could, they would move to New York City for good. Portia didn't believe for a second that either of them would do it.

But ten years after their parents' deaths, three years after Cordelia married, Portia woke up knowing she had to bake a five-layer cake with perfect fondant icing. Once the cake was finished, Portia stood back, her heart twisting, and knew Cordelia was leaving Texas. No one was surprised when Olivia followed her to New York six months later.

Portia missed her sisters, but her days were full. She became the main cook at The Glass Kitchen while Gram sat out front doling out advice and food choices. And still no lessons on the knowing.

One day Portia whipped up a mixed-up mess of sweet potatoes and asparagus, two items that never went together. But somehow, the way she made it, had people ordering more. Just as she served up the last portion, in walked the young lawyer and up-and-coming Texas state senator Robert Baleau, and her world shifted. Despite being born and raised in Willow Creek, he was as foreign to Portia as if he'd moved there from Greece. He was from the opposite side of town, from a world of debutante balls and heirloom pearls. With his sandy blond hair and laughing blue eyes, he charmed her, moved her with his devotion to serving the people, not to mention her.

Soon he began taking her with him as he traveled around the county to political functions. People all over the region loved Portia and said that she made a pretty boy more real. All she cared about was that she adored Robert.

The day he proposed, she threw her arms around him before she could think twice. "Yes, yes, yes!" she said as he laughed and twirled her around.

Surprisingly, Robert's wealthy parents approved. It was Gram who didn't.

"They'll hurt you," Gram said, scowling. "You're not part of their world, and you never will be."

But with every day that passed, more and more of Robert's world embraced Portia Cuthcart, the girl who grew up in a double-wide — even if the fancier people weren't particularly comfortable talking about The Glass Kitchen or the legendary Gram.

As the wedding grew near, another shift began, as slow as thyme breaking through the earth in spring. Robert began to notice that Portia knew things. At first, he laughed them off. But soon he began to tense every time she knew she needed to bake or cook something — like his mother’s favorite lemon bars just before she invited Portia over for tea. Or tuna casserole in a tinfoil pan, the kind perfect for freezing and giving to someone in need — just before a neighbor's wife died.

One morning Portia woke knowing she had to make long, thick strands of pulled taffy that she wove into thin lengths of rope. Robert walked into the kitchen and came to a surprised stop when he saw the braided candy spread across the kitchen counter along with everything else she had known she needed. "This is unnatural," he said quietly.

Confused, Portia blinked. "What's unnatural about whipped cream, Saran Wrap, and ropes of taffy?"

She was almost certain Robert blushed and looked uncomfortable. "Portia, sweet, normal women don't know things that other people are thinking."

"My grandmother knows." Portia kept her hands moving, twisting the taffy before it could stiffen.

"I rest my case. If anyone isn't normal, it's your grandmother."

Her hands stilled. "Robert. There is nothing wrong with Gram. And there is nothing wrong with me."

He blinked, then blurted, "You're telling me that after I had sexual thoughts this afternoon, and you went out and put together the very things I fantasized about, that that's normal?"

As soon as the words were out of his mouth, his eyes widened. Portia was shocked, too, but then she laughed. "You were fantasizing about me? Me and ropes of taffy and whipped cream?"

She let her laughter turn into a sexy smile; then she wiped her hands and walked over to him. For half a second, the good Christian politician started to succumb, but then he took her hands and gave them a reassuring little squeeze, placing them against his heart. "I want to marry you, Portia. But I need you to be like other women. I need you to... not bake pies before the church announces a bake sale. I need you to be normal. Can you do that for me?"

Portia was stunned into silence.

Robert kissed her on the brow and refused to discuss it any further. She knew to his mind it was a simple yes-or-no question.

Since it was Monday, The Glass Kitchen was closed. As soon as Robert left, Portia went in search of her grandmother, needing to talk. Something had been off with Gram recently. Great-aunt Evie had died only a month before, leaving the town house to the girls. They all missed her, but with Gram it was as if a piece of her had died along with her sister.

Portia walked into the kitchen and realized that Gram wasn't there in the same second that another bout of knowing buckled her over at the waist.

Heart pounding, she started to prepare the meal that hit her so hard. Her famous cherry tomatoes stuffed with chile, cheese, and bacon, along with pulled pork, endive slaw, and potato pancakes with homemade catsup. She cooked, knowing she could do nothing else, though she was surprised when she realized she needed to set the table for only one.

Gram must have gone out for the day without telling her. But ten minutes after Portia sat down to eat, Gram walked into the kitchen from the back parking lot. At the sight of the meal and single place setting, Gram had to steady herself on the counter's edge.

Portia leaped up and started gathering another plate and silverware.

"No need," Gram said, setting her handbag down, then headed out of the kitchen.

Portia raced after her, but at the doorway to her grandmother's bedroom, Gram turned and pressed her dry hand to Portia's cheek. "It's time. I should have known you'd learn the knowing whether I taught you or not."

"What are you talking about?"

Gram smiled then, a resigned smile. But she didn't answer. She shut the bedroom door.

Portia returned to the kitchen and paced, hating that she didn't know what the meal meant. An eerie sense of dread rushed through her. She decided that if Gram wanted to go somewhere, she wouldn't let her take the car. She wouldn't allow her near the stove or the knives. She would keep her safe from whatever might be coming, anything that could have been predicted by the single place setting.

It was summer and hot, the painfully blue afternoon sky parched by heat and humidity. Gram didn't return to the kitchen until nearly four o'clock.

Portia jumped and ran across the hard-tile floor. "What's wrong?"

"It's time for you to take over The Glass Kitchen for good."

"What? No!"

Portia kept trying to solve whatever was wrong. But that ended when Gram stepped around her and headed for the back door of The Glass Kitchen.

"Where are you going?"

Gram didn't retrieve her handbag or keys. There was nothing Portia could take away to keep her from leaving.

"Gram, you can't leave!"

Gram didn't listen. She walked out the door, Portia following, pleading, "Gram, where are you going?"

But what Portia hadn't expected was that her grandmother would stop abruptly underneath the suddenly stormy Texas sky and raise her hands high. Lightning came down like the crack of God’s hand, quick and reaching, striking Gram.

Shock, along with electricity, surged through Portia, knocking her off her feet like a rag doll thrown to the dirt by an angry child. Her blouse ripped at the shoulder, blood marking the white material like a brand.

The rest was a blur— people hurrying to them, the ambulance screaming into the yard. What stood out was that Portia knew she was responsible. If only she hadn't cooked the meal. If only she had set the table for two instead of one. If only she hadn't allowed her grandmother to walk out the door. If only she had never had even a glimpse of the knowing.

But if onlys didn't change anything. Gram was gone, all because of a meal Portia hadn't even begun to understand but had prepared.

Standing in the dirt lot, The Glass Kitchen behind her, Portia promised herself she wouldn't cook again.

A month later, she married Robert, then began shaping herself into the perfect Texas politician's wife, erasing everything she could of herself until she was a blank slate of polite smiles and innocuous conversation. She slammed the lid shut on the knowing.

And became normal.

Yankee Doodle dessert cups recipe

Yields 6

Ingredients and supplies:

  • 6 butterscotch pudding cups
  • 20-30 Golden Oreo cookies
  • 1 cup red candy melt wafers
  • 3 patriotic hat printouts on card stock (download PDF here)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • 12 small googly eyes (found in most craft stores)
  • 6 wood plugs (1/2 inch or smaller, found in craft or hardware stores)
  • 6 cotton balls
  • Tape
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the red candy melt wafers for 30 seconds, stir, and then heat for another 30 seconds, until smooth. Dip the tops of 6 Oreo cookies into the red candy melt. Set them aside on a plate to cool and harden.
  2. To make the patriotic hats, download and print the PDF above on card stock paper. Cut out the shapes. If you want to make hats of varying heights, then just trim the top of the red-and-white-striped area. Form the cylinders of the hat, hot gluing the ends together. Attach the cylinders to the red circles, using more hot glue. Set them aside to let them cool.
  3. To make Uncle Sam's face, hot-glue the googly eyes to the front of the pudding cup. Make tiny eyebrows, mustaches, beards and sideburns with the cotton balls. Hot-glue them in place. Glue the wooden plug noses last.
  4. Put a rolled piece of tape on top of the pudding cups, and attach the paper hats. Fill the hats with stacks of Oreo cookies to the desired height, making sure to place a red candy melt-covered cookie on top.

Yes, folks, it's happening again. Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have gotten together yet again for the umpteenth time after being spotted clutching each other in Malibu on Monday, June 16.

A new evidenced report from TMZ reveals that Gomez and Bieber spent Monday night together while celebrating a pal's birthday at Malibu's Bootsy Bellows. The site posted a video where the pair can be seen glued together as Gomez grabbed on to Bieber during the party.

Plus, earlier the same day, the ill-fated duo was spotted snuggling while riding a Can-Am Spyder 3-wheeler together around the beach with a few other friends. The newest Gomez-Bieber togetherness report comes on the heels of the Canadian singer's controversial racial jokes he made a few years back.

Apparently, the pop icon asked the "Come and Get It" singer to talk to him and help him get through his latest trouble-making snafu. According to insiders, Bieber said that Gomez is the only one who really understands him and he desperately needed her at the time.

Adding to the reuniting rumors, E! News also reported about an Instagram photo Bieber posted of himself being embraced by Gomez, which he quickly deleted moments later. The photo showed Gomez cradling Bieber's head — recognized by the new tattoo under his ear — with a caption that read, "Our love is unconditional."

According to The Hollywood Gossip, Gomez also spent the weekend in a private cottage in Canada with Bieber and his family where they celebrated the birthday of the singer's dad.

You can always count on OK Go for a visually entertaining music video. In the past, the alt-rock band delivered a one-of-a-kind choreographed aerobic workout ("Here It Goes Again"), the most colorful tango to date ("Skyscrapers") and has now dropped four minutes of eye-popping and mind-altering goodness for their latest video "The Writing's on the Wall."

In the video, which premiered on Tuesday, May 17, the foursome make their way through a gadget-filled Brooklyn lot, where the camera does an impressive one-take of the band in various visual eye tricks. And we mean it when we say that OK Go pulls out all the stops for the visuals. There are multicolored ensembles to blend in with props, upside down bicycling and tricked-out mirrors that unveil colorful rooms and props.

"The Writing's on the Wall" took almost three weeks to assemble and required over 50 takes. However, OK Go's new clip isn't just about providing some off-the-wall visuals. It actually goes well with the song's lyrical content, which tells the pre-breakup perspective of a couple seeing situations in different ways.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, front man and co-director Damian Kulash spoke about his vision for the piece, emphasizing the importance of connecting the visual and lyrical themes. "It was important to me that we didn't add a layer of meaning that's not already there," Kulash explained. "We wanted to be able to have messages in there, but I didn't want them going throughout the entire song in way that would make you feel like you were reading the whole time."

"The Writing's on the Wall" is the lead single off OK Go's fourth studio album, Hungry Ghosts, which drops in October.

A couple that sings together, stays together. Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman showed off their musical talents last week to a group of patients while visiting the Monash Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

On Friday, the couple decided to lift some spirits in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit wing. Urban played "Amazing Grace" on his guitar while Kidman and the staff sang along to the music. The concert was so informal that the American Idol judge was sitting on a counter with everyone surrounding him.

Maria Menounos has never been known as someone with a weight problem, but the TV host is now opening up about keeping the perfect body. Menounos' comment may be surprising to some — she said she is no longer concerned with that goal.

"If I were to take my jeans off right now, you would see pre-cellulite," Menounos told Health magazine. "It doesn't look that good, but I'm OK with that. We're all human."

Menounos isn't worried about keeping her figure, but she is inspired by others who work harder than she does for the perfect body.

"Trust me: I'll see Giuliana Rancic's tweets in the morning and she's like, 'At the gym at 4 a.m.,' and I'm thinking, 'God bless you!' I could never in a million years," she said. "I never look at anybody's body and think, 'Oh my God, I hate her.' What I do is admire."

Menounos has kept the pounds off by focusing on her health before her weight, and making sure she exercises throughout the day.

The former Extra host's mind-set over her body has to do with her past health problems. She told the magazine that she found herself overweight after letting herself eat anything in college, and began dieting — but not in healthy ways.

"Even though I was skinny, I was eating so poorly that I landed in the hospital for dehydration and nutrient issues," Menounos explained. "I was in the hospital for a week with a rare intestinal infection. They thought I had SARS."

EXCLUSIVE: Chasing Maria Menounos finale has "shocking commitment" in store >>

After that moment in the hospital room, she decided to take control of her life and her health. She said, "I wrote on a piece of paper, 'I will not compromise my health for anyone or anything ever again.' I still have that note."

More than a week after the crash that took the life of his friend and left him in critical condition, Tracy Morgan has been upgraded to fair condition.

Tracy Morgan crash: Truck driver plays the victim >>

"Happy to pass along that Tracy has been upgraded to fair condition, which is a great improvement," Morgan's publicist Lewis Kay told CNN. "His personality is certainly starting to come back as well."

Morgan was riding in a limo bus on the New Jersey turnpike on June 7 when a Walmart truck crashed into their vehicle. Morgan was with four others at the time of the crash, and comedian James McNair was killed.

Another passenger (and Morgan's assistant), Jeff Millea, had also been listed as critical but has now been upgraded to fair as well. Morgan sustained numerous injuries, including broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken femur and a broken leg.

Kevin Roper, the driver of the Walmart truck, had reportedly been awake for more than 24 hours when the crash occurred. He turned himself in to police the night of the crash and has pleaded not guilty to charges of vehicular homicide and assault by an auto. He has since been released on $50,000 bail.

Pals of Tracy Morgan crash victims beg for removal of video >>

Bill Simon, CEO of Walmart U.S., released a statement after the crash.

"This is a tragedy and we are profoundly sorry that one of our trucks was involved," he said. "We are working quickly to understand what happened and are cooperating fully with law enforcement to aid their investigation. The facts are continuing to unfold. If it's determined that our truck caused the accident, Walmart will take full responsibility. Safety is our absolute highest priority, but that is no comfort whatsoever to the families and friends who are suffering today. We offer them our deepest condolences. We can't change what happened, but we will do what's right for the family of the victim and the survivors in the days and weeks ahead."

Kay said that Morgan still has plenty of recovery time ahead of him, and explained, "We expect him to remain in the hospital for several weeks."

Kanye West mad at wedding photographer

Kanye West's honeymoon was ruined thanks to photographer Annie Leibovitz, he claims, because the rapper spent days trying to fix the famed flower wall photo with bride Kim Kardashian.

Leibovitz didn't directly ruin the famous floral wall photo of West and Kardashian, but, because she ended up not actually taking the picture herself, West claims it needed lots of work. Thus, he blames her for the days he spent retouching it instead of spending his honeymoon time with Kardashian.

Top 10 mind-numbing quotes from Kanye West interview >>

It took West days to get the photo in decent shape because the flowers on the wall were "off" in color, TMZ reported. But, his obsession over the shot angered his new wife due to all the time spent on it during their vacation.

"She was exhausted because we worked on the photo so much," West revealed. "Annie Leibovitz pulled out, because I think she was scared of the idea of celebrity."

Leibovitz's excuse for backing off at the last minute seemed a bit fishy, as her brand is heavily influenced by celebrity work. But nonetheless, during a Cannes film conference, West said he wanted his "wedding photos to look like Annie Leibovitz's photos."

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West hammer out their prenup >>

"We sat there and worked on that photo for four days," West went on. "Can you imagine telling someone who just wants to Instagram a photo, who's the No. 1 person on Instagram, 'We need to work on the color of the flower wall?'"

Even if Leibovitz didn't take the photo in the end, the iconic wedding picture went on to be one of the most famous on Instagram, reaching almost 2 million likes and 35,000 comments. Needless to say, West would have been better off spending time with his new wife rather than Photoshopping a bunch of flowers on a wall during his honeymoon.

There's nothing to worry about. That's what Paul Simon and wife Edie Brickell's lawyers told the judge on Tuesday after appearing in court regarding the couple's April domestic violence charges.

According to CNN, the prosecutor is dropping the case against the two married musicians. The dispute occurred on April 26 at their New Canaan, Connecticut, home. The police arrested them on disorderly conduct charges and they were released from jail the following morning.

Paul Simon & Edie Brickell arrested after "family dispute" >>

The duo walked into the courtroom holding hands the next day and Simon told the judge, "Edie and I are fine. We're going to see our son's baseball game this afternoon."

The "What I Am" singer's lawyer presented a statement to CNN explaining what took place at their home last spring. Brickell wrote, "I got my feelings hurt and I picked a fight with my husband. The police called it disorderly. Thank God it's orderly now."

The couple, who have been married since 1992, did not appear in court. Their lawyers told the judge the fight was atypical in their relationship and there was no further concern about domestic violence.

Terry Richardson has no regrets, slams sexual allegations >>

Simon and Brickell had argued that night and she blocked the door to prevent him from leaving. That move escalated into a shoving match.

According to Deputy Court Clerk Emmy Kalmanidis, prosecutors did warn that they would reopen the case if either of them were arrested or charged with domestic abuse again in the next 13 months.

Let's hope these two sing in perfect harmony from here on out.

Copycat Chipotle honey chicken bowls

Chipotle is my go-to fast food restaurant. I know the food will always taste delicious, and I don't have to worry about the guilt I normally experience after eating fast food. This bowl is very similar to the traditional Chipotle dish, with the exception of an even more flavorful chicken. I made a sweet and smoky chicken marinade that takes this traditional dish to flavor town.

After getting into a physical fight with his brother, Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino was arrested at a tanning salon in New Jersey on Tuesday.

The former Jersey Shore star was inside the Boca Tanning Salon in Middletown when he began to brawl with his brother, Frank Sorrentino. Workers at the store called 911, and police took Mike Sorrentino into custody when they arrived at the scene.

Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is returning to our TV screens >>

Apparently, Mike Sorrentino owns the tanning salon with his family, and this was not the first time cops were called to the facility. Just last week, police were summoned when all the employees' checks bounced, TMZ reported.

No reason for the brawl has been reported yet, but the salon has been a source of many problems for the Sorrentino family. When the bounced check issue occurred, Frank Sorrentino spoke to the police, who told him criminal charges could be filed.

However, Frank said that he was surprised the workers called the cops because the problem only happened "for a few days," TMZ revealed. He added that the whole circumstance was due to a mix-up that happened when the store changed payroll companies.

Snooki says The Situation is broke as a joke >>

New updates reveal that the reality star and former DWTS contestant was about to be released from jail after posting $500 bail and getting booked for simple assault. Most likely, The Situation will also have to appear in court at a later date.

Incidentally, the Sorrentinos' tanning salon will be featured in a new reality show from TV Guide Network. The series, titled The Sorrentinos, will follow Mike and his family members as they attempt to open the ill-fated tanning salon.

If this new tanning salon brawl is any indication, the new show promises to be full of drama and lunacy, just as expected from a Jersey Shore alum's show. But, hopefully, it will also help the family with their finances since the tanning store is apparently not doing so hot on its own.

The new reality series will also feature support for Mike Sorrentino's sobriety since his 2012 rehab stint.

Lifetime has officially tapped Disney star and singer Zendaya to play Aaliyah in its upcoming biopic Aaliyah: Princess of R&B. The made-for-TV movie will tell the story of Aaliyah's meteoric rise to fame before dying tragically in a plane crash at the age of 22.

The movie is an adaptation of the best-selling biography Aaliyah: More Than a Woman.

Zendaya took to Twitter today to voice her excitement for playing the role of the talented R&B star.

We happen to think the casting is perfect. Check out just how much the two women have in common.

Young artists

Aaliyah signed her first record contract at the age of 12, working with such mentors as R. Kelly (although it was reported that the two wed when Aaliyah was just 15), Timbaland, and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot.

Zendaya signed on to the Disney Channel series Shake It Up when she was only 13. Growing up in the spotlight is something only other child stars can fully understand. And if you don't believe us, just check out this article Mara Rooney (Matilda, Mrs. Doubtfire) wrote for Cracked.com.

Aaliyah's family is not happy with release of posthumous song >>

They've got pipes

While she may not have Aaliyah's sultry sound, Zendaya is very much a singer, which is good since she will reportedly be recording four songs for the biopic.

First name only, please

Aaliyah's full name was Aaliyah Dana Haughton, but why use your full name when one will do? Fans were so taken with the soulful singer that any mention of the name Aaliyah still brings her to mind.

Zendaya's given name is Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, but she's recently begun going by just her first name as well. Only time will tell if she achieves the kind of artistic recognition a one-name moniker demands.

Both attended performing arts high schools

Aaliyah attended Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts as a dance student, releasing her sophomore album while she was still enrolled.

Zendaya attended Oakland School for the Arts, doing additional study in the Cal Shakes Summer Shakespeare Conservatory and at the American Conservatory Theater.

Both competed on talent shows

Although Disney has kept Zendaya pretty busy these past few years, the young singer is probably best known for her impressive dance moves on the sixteenth season of Dancing With the Stars. At just 16 years old, Zendaya was the youngest person to have been on the show, and yet she and partner Val Chmerkovskiy managed to dance their way into second place.

But before Dancing With the Stars, before American Idol and The Voice, there was Star Search — where young girls dressed like 30-year-old women and sang Broadway tunes for Ed McMahon. Many, many popular artists today have Star Search pasts, and Aaliyah is no exception. Check out the video of her singing My Funny Valentine below.

Leonardo DiCaprio has proven time and time again that he is passionate about conservation of the Earth — whether it be animals or the environment. He is putting his money where his mouth is yet again with a donation for the ocean.

7 Celebrities with surprisingly exotic pets >>

Some of DiCaprio's most famous roles are based on the ocean, and he has become passionate about the Earth's seas. According to ABC, he has explored the waters around Mozambique, Thailand, and others, and has swum with 15 species of sharks.

"As a kid, I always had a fascination with the ocean and its wildlife. In fact, the first philanthropic dollar I ever contributed was to save the wild manatee in Florida," he said. "Since my very first dive in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia 20 years ago to the dive I got to do in the very same location just two years ago, I've witnessed environmental devastation firsthand."

The Wolf of Wall Street star spoke at the State Department's Our Ocean conference in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to talk about his passion for the world's oceans, even explaining he had wanted to be a marine biologist as a child.

"I'm standing here today as a concerned citizen of this planet who believes that this is the most important issue of our time," DiCaprio said.

The actor spoke about the dangers the oceans face, including climate change, illegal fishing and other human-made disasters.

"If we don't do something to save our oceans now, it won't be just the sharks and the dolphins that will suffer," he said. "It will be all of us, including our children and our grandchildren."

Secretary of State John Kerry spoke about the security and economic sides of saving the world's oceans. President Obama also spoke, promising to fight black-market fishing and to protect marine areas across the world.

World is shocked as Leonardo DiCaprio loses to Josh Hutcherson >>

DiCaprio then added his voice and said his foundation would be pledging $7 million to the cause over the next two years. The foundation has already pledged $3 million to help preserve marine wildlife.

"I've learned that with each passing day, so many of our aquatic species are in jeopardy — not because of nature's unpredictability, but because of human activity," DiCaprio said. "I stand here today to challenge all of you to step up, to utilize your positions of authority, to ensure the health of the oceans that are so vital to people's lives all around the world. My ask is straightforward:  Step up."

Lorde went on a very special family vacation this week.

Lorde's boyfriend tells world what dating a superstar is like >>

While in Niagara Falls on Monday, the young phenom tweeted her elation that her parents, Vic O'Connor and Sonja Yelich, had finally gotten engaged after a very long courtship.

"BEST DAY- went to niagara falls- my dad proposed to my mum after almost 30 years together," the "Royals" songstress tweeted.

She followed up with a second tweet to confirm that she has now in fact seen a diamond, referring to the lyrics "I've never seen a diamond in the flesh / I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies / And I'm not proud of my address / In a torn-up town, no postcode envy," from her hit single.

Lorde's mother and father, who are a poet and civil engineer respectively, according to Us Magazine, obviously did an amazing job raising their daughter regardless of their own marital status. The singer has shown signs of maturity beyond her years since suddenly shooting to stardom. In March, she took to Twitter to denounce some photos of herself that had been obviously Photoshopped and wanted to make sure her impressionable fans know that it's OK to be imperfect. "There's a lot of importance placed on physical perfection in this industry, and I wish my favourite stars didn't look perfect," Lorde wrote in a previous Tumblr post. "I think fans (me included) have these feelings of worthlessness, like they'll never be as pretty/talented/whatever, as a result of this intense Photoshop culture and the endless strive for perfection."

Lorde puts stalkerazzi on blast >>

The talented musician, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, has also previously stated that her solid upbringing is what helps her maintain normalcy while participating in the crazy world of the entertainment industry. "I'll never go off the rails like Britney (Spears), or do an Amy (Winehouse), because my upbringing was so normal," she told The Sun back in November 2013. "I can't touch alcohol at my age, and I'm not even sure I want to when I'm older."

Congrats to O'Connor and Yelich on the engagement and for raising such a talented, level-headed daughter!

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend may very well be one of the most adorable (and gorgeous) couples in Hollywood, but are they planning to bring any gorgeous kids into the world anytime soon?

Chrissy Teigen goes off on fat-shamers >>

The model opened up about whether she and her new husband, who are still very much in the honeymoon phase, plan to start a family anytime soon.

"We're not really thinking about it yet," Teigen told People. "Most of my friends have kids, actually, and basically, nobody ever says, 'I wish I would have had them earlier!' So at this point, I'm having a lot of fun playing with my friends' babies."

Legend and Teigen have spoken about their open communication in the past and have obviously already had the kid talk. They are parents to a rescued bulldog named Penny, and Teigen said she is happy with no human children yet.

"If dogs are the starters for babies, we should have three or four babies by now," she said. "I like to think of ourselves as working on babies all the time. And working on getting dogs all the time."

Chrissy Teigen flips a lid over John Legend doppelbaby >>

But just because the newlyweds are not ready for their own kids doesn't mean they both don't love children. Teigen admitted she spends a lot of time with her friends' children these days. She said, "I think I've seen my best friend's kids all week, every day this past week. I love hanging out with them, and it's nice being able to hold them, then pass them over when they start crying. Amazing."

Some people throw epic surprise birthday parties, but Busy Philipps knows how to throw one heck of a surprise wedding — and she has the photos to prove it.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Busy Philipps and AnnaLynne McCord >>

To commemorate her seventh wedding anniversary, the mother of two, who has been married to screenwriter Marc Silverstein since 2007, posted a series of beautiful wedding photos along with some super-sweet captions.

"7 years ago today, Marc & I invited our friends to what they thought was my surprise birthday party," the Freaks and Geeks star wrote. "When I showed up, everyone yelled surprise and and Marc & I yelled it right back- since they had ACTUALLY been invited to our wedding. It was single handedly the most magical and fun day of my life and honestly, when things get tough (as in marriages THINGS DO) I think about that day, the feeling that was in that room, how my partner in life is my partner in crime (good crime, guys- like throwing fun parties) and how VERY lucky I am."

The "throwing fun parties" may be in reference to the surprise wedding the two planned together, but the Philipps-Silversteins have been known to throw some awesome New Year's bashes in the past as well. "We'd have crazy extravaganzas with fake snow," she said of the soirees in an interview with Refinery29. "One year, we projected March of the Penguins and made things freezing and fun in L.A. Another year, we projected Raise the Red Lantern, that cult film, and had red lanterns everywhere."

Philipps posted two more photos of herself and Silverstein looking oh-so-in-love. The final pic is captioned: "Last one. Until next year..."

The Cougar Town actress gave birth to the couple's second child, baby girl Cricket Pearl Silverstein, last July. Philipps and Silverstein are also proud parents to another daughter, Birdie Leigh, who is 5.

30 Seconds to Mars drummer Shannon Leto was taken into custody by police last night for driving under the influence in Hollywood, according to TMZ.

Leto, who is brother and bandmate to actor Jared Leto, was arrested around 7 p.m., when officers found his car stalled on Fairfax Boulevard. TMZ's sources say that Shannon Leto was exhibiting signs of impairment and also had an outstanding traffic warrant for driving without a license.

David Cassidy's wife wants divorce after his third DUI arrest >>

Being arrested for driving while intoxicated is probably not the best feeling in the world, but at least the older Leto brother is in good company. He joins a laundry list of celebrities who have faced the same legal drama. Lamar Odom, Justin Bieber, David Cassidy, Amanda Bynes, Kevin Hart, Matthew Fox, Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Pressly and Chris Pine have all been charged with DUI in the past, and that's just the short list.

The drummer might want to give Bynes a call to get a meeting with her lawyer, Rich Hutton. The actress had her DUI charges dropped back in February as part of a plea deal. Bynes pleaded guilty to a "wet reckless" in the deal, which is still alcohol-related but not as serious as DUI, and avoided doing any jail time.

Shannon Leto was still in custody this morning and being held on $5,000 bail for the DUI on top of $2,500 for driving without a license, according to TMZ.

The elder Leto sibling may be in some hot water at present moment, but his Oscar-winning brother doesn't seem to be sweating the legal snafu. Jared posted a silly mustache pic of himself on Instagram this morning, while his brother was quite possibly still in jail.

While it's hard to have sympathy for someone who puts other people's lives in peril by driving while intoxicated, sometimes DUIs happen to good people. Our hearts melted when Shannon and Jared posted screen grabs on Instagram last February of the two Facetiming their mother to ask her to accompany them to the upcoming Academy Awards, where Jared later won Best Supporting Actor. Even mama's boys sometimes get in trouble.

How to find inexpensive maternity clothes

Pregnant woman picking an outfit

Instead of blowing your hard-earned cash on full-price maternity clothes, load up your closet with these inexpensive maternity clothing ideas.

1. Rent it, babe

Why buy when you can rent? MineforNine is an online store that rents out high-end maternity clothing for short periods of time. If you have to go to a wedding or graduation, or have a really important presentation at work, it makes a lot of sense to just rent the perfect maternity outfit instead of buying it.

2. Sew your own

You'd be surprised by how simple it is to sew maternity clothing staples — like a ruched T-shirt, tunic dress or stretchy pencil skirt. With the right materials, homemade maternity clothes can save you a bundle. Try your hand at sewing by checking out All Free Sewing for super cute maternity patterns.

3. Take a chance on Craigslist

Ah, Craigslist. The land of frightening propositions and (a few) amazingly good deals. Peruse Craigslist, and you'll likely find a new mom who is desperate to unload boxes of maternity clothes, sometimes for a flat rate. For instance, I bought an entire two boxes of maternity clothes on Craigslist for $75. They were in great shape, since they'd only been worn for a couple months — and I was pretty much set for pregnancy.

4. Keep your clothes on

Figure out how to transition your own pieces into your pregnancy wardrobe — either by using extenders like the Bellaband, or making slight tweaks to turn your items into maternity clothes. With this approach, you may not even have to buy maternity clothing until well into your second trimester.

5. Check out high-end resale

These aren't your mama's thrift shops. High-end resale shops, like the the Saver's family of thrift stores, carry really nice clothing at a great price. Items are gently used, so you can buy with confidence that you'll be looking good.

6. Trade and borrow

Hey, there's no shame in borrowing from a friend or trading back and forth. You don't even need to limit your requests to pregnant friends or new moms. Instead, scour your bestie's shelves for normal clothing that can double as maternity clothing, to give your wardrobe a fun boost of energy when you're sick of the same outfits.

7. Use your coupon savvy

Several popular retailers — like Kohl's, JC Penney and Target — carry maternity clothing. Unfortunately, these items can prove budget-breaking without a little coupon savvy. When you find out you're pregnant, sign up for promotions at each store to receive valuable coupons in the mail, and use them on maternity clothing discounts. You can also check out Target's coupon database, since the site often carries coupons for maternity clothes.

8. Scour online clearances

Old Navy is well-known for its online maternity clothing clearances. Sure, it's a little risky because you can't try the items on — but a $6 maternity T-shirt? It's worth taking a chance.

Budgeting tip: Don't go nuts buying cute stuff the second you find out you're pregnant — instead, wait to see how your belly grows, and buy as you go.
