Women Who Wake Up Early Are Less Likely to Develop Depression

Early to bed and early to rise makes a woman... less likely to develop depression according to new research. Specifically, middle-age to older women who naturally go to bed early and wake up early have lower instances of depression even after accounting for environmental factors like work schedule and light exposure.

The study, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, examined data from more than 32,000 female nurses to determine if there’s a link between chronotype — a fancy way of describing your preference of when to go to sleep and wake up — and mood disorders. The research found that chronotype (which is partially determined by genetics) appears to influence depression risk.

"Our results show a modest link between chronotype and depression risk. This could be related to the overlap in genetic pathways associated with chronotype and mood," lead author Céline Vetter, director of the Circadian and Sleep Epidemiology Laboratory at CU Boulder, said in a statement.

More: Why Insomnia Is More Than Not Being Able to Fall Asleep

Previous research — like a 2016 study in the Annals of Translations Medicine and a 2015 study in Chronobiology International — has already shown that people who go to bed late are twice as likely to develop depression. However, these studies typically used data from a single, set point in time and only took into consideration one depression risk factor. This means that the research, though valuable, has made it difficult to determine whether depression causes people to stay up late or whether staying up late increases the risk of depression.

This new study, conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder, followed the sleep patterns and depression symptoms of the more than 32,000 participants for four years, also taking into account additional depression risk factors like body weight, physical activity, chronic disease and night shift work. Those who reported being night owls were less likely to be married, more likely to live alone and be smokers and more likely to have erratic sleep patterns.

Even after taking all the other environmental and social factors into account, the participants who went to bed and woke up early had a 12 to 27 percent lower risk of being depressed than those who described themselves as “intermediate types” (neither being an early riser nor a night owl).

"This tells us that there might be an effect of chronotype on depression risk that is not driven by environmental and lifestyle factors," Vetter said. "Alternatively, when and how much light you get also influences chronotype, and light exposure also influences depression risk. Disentangling the contribution of light patterns and genetics on the link between chronotype and depression risk is an important next step."

More: Does Melatonin Really Help You Sleep?

But don’t worry, night owls — this doesn’t mean that you’re going to develop depression. In fact, Vetter said that anyone can lower their risk of depression by getting enough sleep, spending time outdoors, dimming the lights at night before you go to bed and getting as much daylight as possible.

Whitney Port Has Never Eaten Pasta — No, We're Not Kidding

You first met her back in 2006 when she appeared in the hit show The Hills and then again when she got her own spinoff show, The City, in 2008. Now, Whitney Port's days look a whole lot different than they did back when she was working for Diane von Fürstenberg in Manhattan.

Port married Tim Rosenman in 2015, and together, they welcomed a beautiful son named Sonny in 2017. Now, Port is back in Los Angeles and somehow manages to run a fashion company, lifestyle brand and raise an almost 1-year-old all at the same time.

We recently chatted with Port, and not only did she give us a peek inside her fridge, but she also dropped some major bombshells like — ahem —  she has never eaten pasta. Not once. In her whole life. We were as shocked as you probably are right now.

SheKnows: Tell us a little bit about what’s in your fridge.

Whitney Port: We have dips from the farmers market as well as olives with blue cheese, which I love to snack on! We also have Lactaid milk and a bunch of different fresh veggies for salad, which is a go-to for dinner. We also have little make-ahead pancakes for Sonny.

SK: Are there any items that you always make sure to keep in stock?

WP: I always make sure to keep Lactaid milk in the fridge. It's 100 percent real dairy, just without the lactose. My husband is lactose intolerant, and we love the creamy deliciousness it provides, so it has become the only milk we have in our house. We use it in everything from the smoothies we like to make to refuel post-workout to banana bread to eating it with our cereal.

SK: What’s your go-to healthy snack?

WP: My go-to healthy snack is banana muffins with no added sugar or butter.  I make them in really small muffin tins so they’re bite-sized and perfect for on-the-go!

SK: Sonny is almost a year old already! What are some of his favorite foods right now?

WP: He loves banana and egg pancakes, toast with avocado and goat cheese. I also make roasted chicken thighs with olive oil and garlic that I shred so it’s easy for him to eat.

SK: Can you give us an example of one of your favorite weeknight meals?

WP: My favorite meal that’s also super-easy to make is flank steak with arugula and a sprinkle of Parmesan. Timmy will BBQ the steak, and I’ll handle the salad. It’s an easy, no-brainer dish for those busy days!

SK: Did your cooking habits change when you became a mother? If so, in what ways?

WP: The biggest thing that changed is that we cook less! We don’t have as much time to make homemade meals anymore.

SK: What would you consider the ultimate comfort food?

WP: My ultimate comfort food is steak and mashed potatoes!

SK: Everyone has a signature dish that they can make really well. What’s yours?

WP: My signature dish is a dessert — I’m better at baking than cooking. It’s a crisp that can be made with any kind of fruit — berries, peaches (when they’re in season), apples — you name it!

SK: Any foods you absolutely can’t stand?

WP: I hate anchovies. I’ve also never eaten pasta in my entire life either!

SK: Any dishes you’re excited to try this summer?

WP: I’m going to Italy for the first time in a week and I think I’m going to actually try pasta there! I feel like I have to, right?!

SK: If you could only use one small kitchen appliance (microwave, blender, slow cooker, etc.) for an entire month, which one would you choose?

WP: I would use a toaster oven!

SK: How would you describe the style of your home?

WP: I would say the style of my home is California chic with an emphasis on comfort.

SK: As a busy mom, do you have any tips or hacks for keeping your home organized?

WP: One of the greatest things I’ve ever done was create two drawers for Sonny’s bottle and bottle parts. I went to The Container Store and bought drawer dividers. When you have a kid, you realize all of the little parts that come with the contraptions that they need, and it’s so hard to keep organized. We also have one large area in our home for Sonny to roam free and play, so we have a huge bin where we store all his toys.

Well, now we know what we are getting Whitney for Christmas — a massive box filled with every kind of pasta.

Emilia Clarke Shared a Cryptic Game of Thrones Message Over the Weekend

Although Game of Thrones doesn't return for its eighth and final season until 2019, leaving more than a year between new episodes, fans can find some comfort in social media posts from the cast. Or can they? The stars of this HBO megahit are throwing the tiniest granules of information out without context, leaving us more confused and anxious than ever about what's to come.

More: Wait — Did Sophie Turner Just Spoil the End of GoT With Her New Tattoo?

The latest news from Westeros comes from the Mother of Dragons herself. Emilia Clarke, aka Daenerys Targaryen, shared a selfie on Instagram on Sunday with a caption that leaves us with more than a few questions.

"Hopped on a boat to an island to say goodbye to the land that has been my home away from home for almost a decade," Clarke wrote. "It's been a trip ... thank you for the life I never dreamed I'd be able to live and the family I'll never stop missing." She tagged the official Game of Thrones Instagram account and ended her caption with a broken-heart emoji and the hashtag "#lastseasonitis."

We know Clarke and her castmates have been hard at work filming the final season of Game of Thrones. Clarke's costar, Kit Harington, reportedly cried when he read the final script, while Clarke's other costar, Sophie Turner, may or may not have spoiled the finale with her new tattoo. Clarke told Vanity Fair in May that she has already filmed Daenerys' final on-screen moments.

“It fucked me up,” Clarke told VF. “Knowing that is going to be a lasting flavor in someone’s mouth of what Daenerys is...”

Um, OK. That's actually pretty ominous. At the time of the interview, Game of Thrones was still filming and there was (and is) a ton of post-production work to complete before the final season airs next year.

HBO has budgeted approximately $15 million per episode, according to Indiewire, which we think points to an especially epic final season. The high fantasy series is known for its incredible special effects and its high-flying CGI dragons; after the last seven seasons, season eight has a lot to live up to — especially because at the end, the Iron Throne is supposed to boast a new ruler.

So, does Clarke's Instagram post mean that the series has wrapped filming? What island is she referencing? Bustle reports that the show frequently shoots in Iceland, Croatia, Northern Ireland and Malta — though it utilizes some locations more than others. Since filming is pretty top-secret, we're not exactly sure which location Clarke is referring to in her post (except that it's definitely not Croatia, the only reported shooting location that's not an island or part of one). Her words do seem to suggest that, at least for her part, Game of Thrones is a wrap.

As the year continues, we'll likely see more from cast members who are finishing their runs on this iconic series. We're not quite ready to say goodbye, but mostly, we just want to know who lives and who dies. Will Daenerys make it until the end? Clarke isn't telling us, so we'll have to wait until 2019 to find out.

This Grocery Store Is America's Favorite... Again

If you had to bet money on which grocery store was America's favorite, you'd guess Trader Joe's, right? Well, you'd be wrong. It's not even the trendy, healthy version of Trader Joe's — Whole Foods.

More: Whitney Port Has Never Eaten Pasta — No, We're Not Kidding

Market Force Information just completed their annual survey and found, for the third year in a row, that Wegmans is America’s favorite grocery store. Sorry, Publix lovers.

In the survey, Wegmans scored 77 percent of the vote as the favorite on Market Force’s Composite Loyalty Index. Next up was Publix, which tied Wegmans in 2017 and this year, came in a close second with a score of 76 percent followed by Trader Joe’s with 75 percent. Aldi and H-E-B were next, scoring 70 percent and 69 percent respectively. Safeway and Walmart ranked lowest in the study, earning scores of 42 percent and 34 percent.

More than 12,700 consumers were asked to rate their favorite U.S. grocery chains considering aspects like best value, fastest service and cleanliness in an annual survey, with the scoring system based on customers' satisfaction as well as how likely they were to recommend the store to others.

More: A Popular Cereal Is Being Recalled Due to a Salmonella Outbreak

Wegmans beat out Trader Joe’s in 2016 as the favorite store and has scored the top spot on the survey for the past three years. The New York-based chain operates 96 locations across the Mid-Atlantic, and we hope — now that we know it is the best — that it will expand to the rest of the country soon enough.

8 MTV Movie Awards Moments That Actually Mattered

$

The MTV Movie Awards have never really been interested in staying prim and proper. No, since the award show first began in 1992, it has made a name for itself with all the outlandish, iconoclastic, politically charged and downright hilarious moments that have bolstered the already vibrant lineup of categories. Those categories, we'll remind you, have changed over the years, morphing from older ones like best sandwich in a movie, best shirtless performance and best dance sequence to the more current, inclusive gender-neutral categories like best performance in movie, best on-screen team and best hero.

But amid all the wackier moments that are forever burned into our brains, there have been some moments that actually mattered. They made a mark, left a meaningful impression, or simply had us contemplating what's really going on long after the moment passed.

More: These GIFs Are the Only MTV Movie & TV Awards Recap You Need

The following moments that mattered are worth reflecting on, especially since the 2018 MTV Movie Awards are bound to be more politically charged and filled to the brim with pop-culture hot takes than in previous years.

1. Taraji P. Henson honors the real hidden figures

Taraji P. Henson made a strong impression when she honored Katherine Johnson, the woman she brought to life in Hidden Figures, and also promoted love, togetherness and the life-changing power of women in STEM fields all in one amazing speech.

2. Aubrey Plaza gets disruptive at the 2013 awards

Aubrey Plaza pulled a Kanye West and totally interrupted Will Ferrell's acceptance speech, but you know what? We're all in for a woman getting disruptive, keeping it funny and, in an accidentally amazing way, reminding us why West's infamous VMAs moment in 2009 was actually the rudest, most alpha-male move — you just end up looking dumb.

3. Reese Witherspoon's memorable 2011 acceptance speech

Reese Witherspoon left the audience pretty shaken up with excitement when she broke through her "nice girl" persona and made some sharp, pointed jabs about folks who are famous because of reality TV shows and sex tapes. While we're not here to speculate on whom Witherspoon was referencing (although TMZ seems to think they know in one of the few remaining videos featuring Witherspoon's comments), what we're struck by is Witherspoon's willingness to call out the gross ways society makes folks famous and to get her hands a little dirty in order to say it.

4. Emma Watson wins MTV's first-ever gender-neutral acting award

In 2017, Emma Watson won the first award of the evening and, even better, won the first award from MTV's newly initiated gender-neutral award categories. Accepting the award for best actor in a movie for her performance in Beauty and the Beast, she brought down the house with her comments on why it's so important to recognize folks for their accomplishments without it being based on their gender.

5. Rebel Wilson breaks down body norms backstage

Rebel Wilson's 2013 hosting gig will remain, in our humble opinions, one of the best in the award show's history. But it was her comments backstage about why she donned a pair of Victoria's Secret-like angel wings and put on her best glam face that really made her a hosting icon.

As she explained to outlets backstage: "In Pitch Perfect, we're called the Bellas, which means beautiful, and we have a whole bunch of different girls in the group who are all different shapes and sizes and nationalities. I think one of the good messages in the movie is that you're all beautiful and that sometimes girls will look at Victoria's Secret models and think they have to model themselves after that, but I really don't think that's the best."

6. Halle Berry pushes back at sexism in a funny way

Halle Berry had a whole heck of a lot of fun with Swordfish costars Hugh Jackman (who looks so young here!) and John Travolta at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards. While the trio were presenting onstage, Berry took the opportunity to push back at the expectation that only women could or should be showing some skin, encouraging the fellas to strip down a bit. They happily obliged, but not the way you'd expect.

7. Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar are the first same-sex pair to win best kiss

Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar accept Best Kiss Award at the 9th Annual MTV Movie Awards

The best kiss category began in 1992, and it only took eight years before Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair snagged that Golden Popcorn for their educational (but iconically sexy) kiss in Cruel Intentions — a kiss they were happy to recreate backstage at the award show in 2000.

8. Jim Carrey's bizarre 1999 acceptance speech is worth revisiting

Jim Carrey has never really been interested in playing by the rules, so when he took to the stage in 1999 dressed as a hippie and delivering a rambling, loosely connected speech for no discernible reason, it immediately became an infamous moment.

These MTV Movie Awards moments certainly leave a memorable impression, but we'll be curious to see what goes down at the 2018 award ceremony — because you know that the show is going to be full of moments that matter.

Heather Locklear Reportedly Hospitalized for Psychiatric Evaluation

Heather Locklear has been hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation in Ventura County, California, after erratic and violent behavior on Sunday led to a family member calling 911. TMZ reports that the 911 caller said Locklear was apparently searching her house for a gun to shoot herself.

More: The Most Important Celebrity Lawsuits Through the Years

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department confirmed the story with TMZ. The outlet posted a recording of the dispatch audio from the 911 call in which the caller says Locklear was acting erratically and may have been suicidal.

An update to the story posted one hour after it went live remarks that a source close to Locklear told TMZ Locklear was "agitated" during the day, leading to her parents going to her home to check on her. At that point, Locklear allegedly became violent, hitting her mother and choking her father. According to the source and to the dispatch audio, it was Locklear's mother who called the police.

Police officers and the fire department responded to the 911 call. Following a domestic violence incident in February — when Locklear allegedly hit her boyfriend and then violently resisted arrest, striking at least three officers — she was charged with felony domestic violence and battery of a police officer. After this incident, TMZ reports that the sheriff's office sent multiple deputies to her home on Sunday.

"There was no crime, only a medical issue," police told Us Weekly, which contradicts the alleged violence described by TMZ's source. Us reports that following the incident in February, Locklear returned to rehabilitative treatment; Locklear has struggled with substance abuse issues for several years, repeatedly going in and out of rehab.

“Heather has been in a very dark place for some time, prior to the most recent arrest,” a source told Us in February. “Her family, led by daughter Ava, has tried to get Heather to go to rehab for an extended period of time for help. Heather refuses. … She will stop drinking for a while, but will relapse. It’s truly a very sad situation.”

We hope the future is brighter for Locklear and that her family is able to move on from these incidents and heal. No one likes to see a loved one struggle in this way.

This Is Why You Shouldn't Lounge Around in a Wet Swimsuit

$
0
0

If you're swimming all day, it's normal to stay in your swimsuit instead of changing in and out of wet garments all day. However, once you've escaped the pool for a while, sitting around in your wet suit is not really the best idea. Here's why.

Dampness is not your friend

You probably know by now that choosing cotton underwear makes your vulva far happier than wrapping it up in synthetic fabric. According to materials from the St. Louis University School of Medicine, this is because it allows air to come in and moisture to go out, which is great for avoiding some of the woes that can befall your genitals, so it's not a stretch to realize that maybe lounging in a wet swimsuit might not be the best choice for your vag.

More: The Most Common Vaginal Infection Isn't What You Think It Is

Dr. Alyssa Dweck is a full-time practicing OB-GYN in Westchester County, New York, and she agrees. She tells SheKnows it's really not a great idea to keep your goods wrapped in a wet swimsuit for hours at a time, especially considering that swimwear is manufactured with fabrics that are definitely not cotton. The dismal news is that your soggy swimsuit creates an environment where certain microorganisms love to blossom, so it's best to change ASAP, even if your suit is super-cute and you're comfortable.

Bacteria thrive in warm, moist places like a wet bathing suit, Dweck warns. As you can imagine, this is decidedly not what you want to flourish in your nether regions. She also mentions a few maladies that can creep up due to keeping your crotch encased in a soggy suit.

Urinary tract infection: A wet swimsuit can result in a urinary tract infection, says Dweck. A UTI is a pretty common experience for women, unfortunately. While the term UTI describes an infection anywhere along your urinary tract (including your kidneys), infections that start — and remain — in your bladder can still be painful.

Worse yet, if they're left untreated, they can become more serious and can sneak right along your ureters and straight to your kidneys. "If you think you have a UTI, seek a medical evaluation, obtain a urinalysis and urine culture and treat with antibiotics if indicated," Dweck advises.

Yeast infection: Another sad tale for a vulvar region swathed in wet swimsuit material is the possibility of developing a yeast infection. "A wet bathing suit creates a dark, moist environment and can alter the vaginal pH and lead to infection," says Dweck. Yeast infections are very uncomfortable and can lead to itching, soreness, pain upon urination and abnormal vaginal discharge. A yeast infection can often be treated over the counter, but visit your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

Bacterial vaginosis: Bacterial vaginosis is another vagina situation that can be caused by lounging in a wet suit, Dweck says, again because it can alter your vaginal pH. This can further lead to an upset in the balance of bacteria in the vagina and can present as an abnormal vaginal discharge or unusual odor. This infection is often treated with antibiotics, so a visit to the doc is in order if you suspect BV.

Best care practices

Kara Manglani, certified nurse-midwife and founder of The Fertile Times, notes that often, sitting around in a wet swimsuit is usually harmless (that is, not everyone who sits around in a damp crotch warmer will develop issues). However, there is a caveat. "If you frequently get UTIs or yeast infections, you may want to change into dry clothes to decrease your risk of getting an infection," she tells SheKnows

More: What You Need to Know About Vaginal Probiotics

Also, most people probably aren't too keen to take the risk in the first place. If you could avoid getting a UTI, yeast infection or BV, you totally would, right? In addition to removing your wet swimsuit as soon as reasonably possible, dermatologist Dr. Michele Green has another recommendation that can help keep your area clean and dry: "After swimming, it is always best to rinse off immediately and shower with water."

So, while it's tempting to laze about after a swim, it's really not the best idea for your vaginal health. So hop out of the pool, rinse off and change into some fresh (cotton!) undies — your vulva will thank you.

Meet the Newest Cast Member of Big Little Lies

As fans eagerly anticipate season two of Big Little Lies, which doesn't yet have an official premiere date, we're taking whatever information we can get. Luckily, HBO isn't keeping things as top-secret as they're known to, so in addition to knowing that Hollywood icon Meryl Streep is joining Big Little Lies, Deadline reported recently that legendary TV and film actor Denis O'Hare will appear in a recurring role for the upcoming season.

More: We Know More About Meryl Streep's Role in Big Little Lies, & It's So Good

So far, the only thing we know about O'Hare's character is that his name is Ira Farber. However, fans who are familiar with his past roles surely know that whoever Ira Farber is, he's bound to shake things up.

O'Hare has earned three Emmy nominations over the course of his career, most recently for his turn as William's boyfriend, Jessie, on season one of This Is Us. In 2012 and 2015, he received nominations for his roles in American Horror Story. O'Hare is also known for his recurring roles on True Blood, The Good Wife and Brothers and Sisters. He's no stranger to the silver screen, either. He costarred in Milk, Dallas Buyer's Club and Garden State and is slated to star in the upcoming film The Parting Glass, which he wrote based on his own life.

In fact, O'Hare is kind of everywhere. He has several other upcoming films, including The Goldfinch, which is based on the Pulitzer-winning novel of the same title by Donna Tartt. He's also in a Netflix drama series (Private Life) and his IMDb page boasts over 83 acting credits.

More: Let's Break Down Some New Big Little Lies Season Two Photos

Per Bustle, O'Hare and Streep are not the only new faces joining the Big Little Lies cast for season two. Other additions include Kathryn Newton, Merrin Dungey, Crystal Fox and Sarah Sokolovic. Meanwhile, core cast members Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and Adam Scott will reprise their already iconic roles.

The first season of Big Little Lies had us all on the edges of our seats — we can only imagine what season two has in store for us. Deadline reports that the upcoming season will explore "the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting." Sounds like a wild ride.

Meghan Markle's Dad Doesn't Think a 'Stork Is in the Air' — Yet

Thomas Markle — the only person in the world who can get away with calling the new Duchess of Sussex, formerly known to us Americans as just Meghan Markle, by her childhood nickname "Bean" — isn't exactly shy about talking to the media about his famous daughter. We can't imagine Meghan and Prince Harry are that thrilled about this, but it's fun to hear Thomas' royal baby predictions nonetheless. (Oh, like you haven't thought about how cute those kids would be. Please.)

MoreWhy Meghan Markle's Official Royal Bio Talks About Periods

On Monday, the father of the world's most famous bride (of late — sorry, Kate Middleton) told the U.K.'s Good Morning Britain that his daughter "has wanted children for a long time."

“And when she met Harry, she spoke about how much she loved him, and so there has to be a child-making somewhere soon,” Markle also told Good Morning Britain. “I don’t think there is a stork in the air yet, but I think it will happen sooner or later.”

Markle didn't just dish about family plans — he spoke candidly about being a no-show to his daughter's royal wedding bash on May 19. “They were disappointed. Meghan cried, I’m sure — she did cry," he said, "and they both said, ‘Take care of yourself. We are really worried about you.’ They said the important thing is that I get better.”

MoreMeghan Markle Hints There May Be Another Royal Baby Soon

We're still not sure exactly what went down between Thomas Markle and the royal camp in the days preceding the royal wedding. Initially, it appeared as if Markle had been asked not to attend the wedding when the media revealed he had staged several photo shoots of himself with paparazzi before the big day. Talk about a royal breach of etiquette, oof! Then, reports stated Thomas would not be attending the wedding due to heart problems — an explanation confirmed by Meghan in an official statement two days prior to the wedding. Thomas told Good Morning Britain that he had indeed undergone a May heart surgery.

Markle said, “It was a very emotional moment for me, like I said, I cried about it... I wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle. I wanted that moment. But I’m thankful for everything the way it went. I was very proud. I was very upset that it wasn’t me, but the whole world was watching my daughter. I was very happy about that.”

Thomas Markle also chatted about the wow moment he experienced when Meghan first revealed to him that she was dating Prince Harry.

“Of course it’s, ‘Wow,’ it comes out as a ‘Wow,’ but this is my daughter, and she’s certainly a prize for him as well,” Markle said proudly. “He’s great, an interesting guy, a prince, but my daughter’s been a princess since the day she was born.”

Markle added, “I don’t think I’ll call her duchess. I don’t have to. That’s my daughter.” Fair enough. But maybe keep a few things to yourself to stay in your daughter's good graces. And the queen of England's. Or Twitter might just have your head.

"I went on a quest to change the world ... and then one day I went, 'Wait, I want to act too. What's going on?'" Silverstone said. The realization led her to roles in 2017's Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and the acclaimed The Killing of a Sacred Deer as well as Book Club, which hit theaters last month.

While Silverstone is currently starring as Bonnie in the Paramount Network comedy series American Woman, she's not letting work take over her whole life. Silverstone recently split from her husband, Chris Jarecki. After more than 20 years together, the couple announced their decision in February, and Silverstone officially filed for divorce in late May according to Us Weekly. The dating scene has changed pretty significantly in the past two decades, and Silverstone, who's currently co-parenting 7-year-old Bear Blu with Jarecki, said she finds it "very fascinating."

"I go on dates, and I find it very fascinating meeting interesting, intelligent, different people," she told Redbook. "I'm super excited about being available and open to whatever's next. Of course, there's tons about it that’s confusing. I call my girlfriends and I'm like, 'What does this mean?'"

Despite her excitement to be dating again, Silverstone was candid about how tough it's been to end her marriage. "Obviously, it's heartbreaking," she said. "You don't ever think you'll be apart when you get married. All I can really say is that we'll co-parent Bear together, and this is completely a good thing for both of us."

On her role in American Woman, she told Us, "I read the script and loved the story and thought it was great … I just fell in love with the role, I thought, ‘What an incredible role for an actress to do, to get to be so many different things and to get to be so strong and so vulnerable.' She goes through so much and she’s just fighting for her life.”

We're really excited to see Silverstone acting again, especially in such a heavy role that draws on a lot of her own life experiences. It will be great to see where she goes from here as a mom, an advocate, an actor and a person.

Queen Elizabeth's Cousin Is Getting Married in the Royal Family's First Ever Gay Wedding

The royal family is about to get yet another welcome touch of modernity by way of a royal wedding in the near future. While Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle's wedding was notable for the fact that Meghan is one of the few biracial people to have married into the royal family, one of Harry's relatives, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, is about to enter into a similarly progressive union after getting engaged over the weekend of July 15 to his partner, James Coyle.

Mountbatten and Coyle's wedding will be the first same-sex marriage performed for a member of the royal family — a true landmark event. If the name "Mountbatten" sounds familiar to fans of the royal family, it's because Mountbatten is the first cousin once removed of Prince Philip (also a Mountbatten) and he is also the queen's third cousin once removed.

This is undoubtedly a happy time for Mountbatten and Coyle. Mountbatten announced the news to the world on his Instagram on Saturday, June 16, with a photo of Coyle holding a massive bottle of champagne.

"So the big news today is that we are now officially engaged! As usual, James has gone overboard with his purchases. You’re not a Lord yet Jimmy!" he joked in the caption.

According to Refinery29, Mountbatten came out in 2016 after being married to Penelope Thompson for 16 years. The couple had three daughters and it would seem that the pair split on very amicable terms. Shortly after Mountbatten announced his engagement to Coyle, he confirmed that Thompson will actually be the one giving him away at the wedding; how sweet is that?

"Future and former spouses," Mountbatten wrote as the caption to a photo he again post to his Instagram on Sunday. "My daughters decided it was only right their Mum should walk me down the aisle and give me away to James. Here’s hoping he won’t say no at the last minute."

According to The Daily Mail, Mountbatten and Coyle have been together since around the time he came out publicly in 2016. The pair met at a skiing resort in Verbier, Switzerland. Since then, Mountbatten has dutifully documented the couple's life together, with holidays spent abroad and lots of love exchanged. Coyle told the Mail to expect a wedding as simple and pure as their love.

"It’s a very modern marriage," he remarked of the wedding their planning at a small chapel in Devon, England, saying of the proposal: "There was no proposal, just an acceptance of this great love."

There is no word yet on whether any members of the immediate British royal family plan to attend the wedding. Refinery29 reports that Prince Edward, Queen Elizabeth II's third son, has expressed his support for the union. Regardless, this is most assuredly a happy time for Mountbatten and Coyle.

A history-making congratulations are in order!

Does Wearing Deodorant Really Cause Breast Cancer?

$

It's time to stock up on summer necessities, and as those hot temperatures approach, many of us are reassessing the type of deodorant we use. For many years, there's been a rumor swirling that long-term use of "traditional" deodorants (the ones we find in the aisles of chain grocery and drug stores) can cause cancer

With so many natural, nontraditional deodorants available, this claim is enough to give plenty of people pause before we apply our usual deodorant. But before making any changes to your hygiene habits (especially if you happen to really like your traditional deodorant brand), let's hear what the experts have to say.

More: 7 Clinical-Strength Deodorants for Fighting Body Odor This Spring & Summer

Behind the breast cancer rumors

First things first: If you're attached to a specific brand of deodorant, there's no evidence that it's putting you at an increased risk of breast cancer. "There are no strong epidemiologic studies in the medical literature that link breast cancer risk and antiperspirant use and very little scientific evidence to support this claim," Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse, a board-certified dermatologist, tells SheKnows

Shainhouse points to a carefully designed epidemiological study of this very issue, which was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute 2002. It compared 813 women with breast cancer and 793 women without the disease. Researchers didn't find a link between breast cancer risk and the use of antiperspirant or deodorant.

More: Annoying Summer Body Issues & How to Fix Them

Shainhouse explains that the basis of this rumor is that "most breast cancers develop in the upper, outer quadrant of the breast (the quarter of the breast closest to the armpit) because that area is closest to the lymph nodes exposed to antiperspirants."

But in reality, there's no evidence to support the claim that the location of cancers within the breast is related to deodorant. So why does this theory exist in the first place? It all comes down to aluminum. The active ingredients in antiperspirants are aluminum-based compounds, which block the sweat glands to keep sweat from getting to the skin's surface.

"Some research has suggested that these aluminum compounds may be absorbed by the skin and cause changes in estrogen receptors of breast cells," Shainhouse explains. Estrogen promotes the growth of both cancerous and noncancerous breast cells, so it's been suggested that these aluminum-based compounds may be a risk factor for developing breast cancer, she adds.

That would be more frightening if aluminum were absorbed through the skin at high levels — but that's not how deodorants work. "One study that looked at the absorption of aluminum from antiperspirants containing aluminum chlorohydrate applied to the underarms found that only a tiny fraction (0.012 percent) was absorbed," Shainhouse says. "The actual amount of aluminum absorbed would be much less than what would be expected to be absorbed from the foods a person eats during the same time."

What about natural deodorants?

Of course, none of this is to say that you shouldn't give natural deodorants a try if you're interested. And if you have sensitive skin, they may be a better option for you. "Natural deodorants are hypoallergenic, therefore they're less likely to cause allergic reactions or skin sensitivity than the traditional formulas do," Dr. Michele Green, a dermatologist, tells SheKnows

Green says traditional deodorants contain fragrance, which acts as the barrier to minimize odor. Natural deodorants, on the other hand, typically contain essential oils to suppress sweating and odor. Like Shainhouse, Green emphasizes that the National Cancer Institute has said there's no conclusive link between traditional deodorants and cancer. But she suggests using natural deodorants due to the decreased risk of an allergic reaction.

"Natural is the best way to go, [but] it depends on your body's personal needs," Green says. For example, some people require prescription-strength antiperspirants — so natural deodorants, which need to be reapplied more often than traditional brands, would definitely not be the best option for those individuals.

If you want to give natural deodorant a try, there's certainly no risk associated with it — but if you're happy with your current brand, you can rest assured that it's not increasing your risk of cancer.

7 Things Horribly Wrong With The Proposal

The Bachelor franchise's new show, The Proposal, premiered last night. The premise? A mystery man judges 10 random women he's never met and then proposes to one of them by the end of the show.

It's like the Miss USA pageant-meets-The Bachelor-meets-lightning speed.

On the premiere, we met Mike. Well, we sort of met Mike. You see, Mike's face wasn't revealed until the very end of the show right before he proposed to the maybe, sort of "woman of his dreams."

More: The Bachelorette Made Me Realize We Need a Refresher on Dating Etiquette

Mike seems great. He's a real average Joe who works as a police officer and likes CrossFit. Mike effectively pulled at our heartstrings, though, because he is an amputee. He lost his foot in an auto accident.

And while we all hope Mike finds lasting happiness, let's be real, it isn't going to be on The Proposal. There are so many things wrong with this show.

1. How are these women even screened?

One of the top women, Kendall, revealed near the end of the show that she doesn't want children. And, uh, the guy, Mike does want kids, so obviously, he didn't pick Kendall. You'd think something as simple as future compatibility would be screened before the show paraded the ladies on the stage. It's not like they get much time to negotiate future goals.

Also, these ladies live all over the place. Is Mike going to propose and then the lady of his choosing is going to just pack her bags and move across country for a guy they don't even know?

2. A bikini competition!!!

If you missed the premiere episode, there was a bikini competition. Yes, you read that right – a bikini competition [insert eye roll here]. With the Miss America pageant getting rid of the bikini competition, it seems a little backward that The Proposal wouldn't nix this idea too.

A little advice from an OG member of Bachelor Nation: They should get rid of this objectifying ritual... immediately.

3. How can we get invested in someone we can't see?

Mike sounds great — a really nice guy. I'm sure he's great. But knowing that he lost his foot in an accident, that he's a police office and that he enjoys CrossFit and being active doesn't suddenly make me want to root for the guy. I have no feelings for Mike at all on his quest to find love. I literally just don't care.

More: 5 Ways Love Can Last After a Reality Show Ends

4. The women aren't given any substance

Yes, the women are asked a bunch of fluff questions like, "What is your ideal Sunday morning?" and "How do you feel about dating an amputee?" and "Are you OK with the risks Mike will have to take as a police officer?" But, like, what's that really going to tell you about a person? I love to hike on Sunday mornings, I'd totally date an amputee and I would also date a police officer, but that doesn't mean Mike and I are soul mates.

5. It's clearly a looks competition

Because the questions are fluff and the time is so short, obviously, Mike is just going to pick the girl he finds the most attractive. Duh. What else is he supposed to base his decision on?

6. There aren't any stakes

None of the girls are upset at all when they're sent home because why would they feel any other way? They have no idea what Mike looks like, what kind of morals and integrity he posses and if they're even attracted to the guy. When Mike would send a girl home, she was just kind of like, *shrug,* "OK." And why should we feel any differently if the contestants can't even get invested?

7. Actions speak louder than words

It's easy to give the right answers. It's easy to say, "Yes, I'd date an amputee. Yes, I'm OK with the risks a police officer must take. Yes, I love being active." But to actually apply those things in daily life? That's a whole other ball game. It takes time to figure out if you're compatible with someone. That's why we date instead of just heading to Vegas with some rando. The Proposal gives us none of the actions.

More: A Huge Bachelorette Spoiler Is Here, & It's Good News

All in all, The Proposal just isn't a sustainable show. It doesn't make you feel anything. The Bachelor is successful because the audience gets emotionally attached to suitors, storylines they can invest in, moments of love and relationships to root for. The Proposal offers none of that. So let's just call it now — this show will probably get canceled before the entire season can even air.

Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen Were Told to 'Smile More' & Twitter Jumped to Their Defense

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen don’t owe anyone smiles. Not men. Not photographers. Not the internet. Page Six learned that lesson the hard way when they published a slideshow on the twins’ 32nd birthday with a dozen pictures of the sisters, from their teenage years to modern day, giving photographers the same steely stare. The slideshow was meant to be evidence that the Olsens are “still figuring out how to smile,” but the internet wasn’t buying it.

After the slideshow was published, Twitter users slammed Page Six for suggesting that the Olsens owe the public a smile. The users explained that the slideshow was especially problematic given the stereotype that women are meant to be happy, pretty, passive and willing to engage in unwanted conversation through a smile.

The slideshow, which was tweeted with the headline, “Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen seem to be still figuring out how to smile,” was criticized, with people telling Page Six to delete the article while others reminded the tabloid that they smiled enough as children(implying they're all good on the smiling front now that they're adults).

However, the main criticism was Page Six’s assumption that just because the Olsens are women, they’re expected to smile and show how nice they are. It's the kind of social policing that many agreed was uncalled for and completely irrelevant to any conversation being had about them.

Once again, the internet is right. Whether they’re child stars or grown women, the Olsens don’t owe anyone a smile.

Chrissy Teigen Steams Her Vagina, & Naturally, She Tells Us All About It

We've already established that Chrissy Teigen is like your friend that is game for trying new things and then will tell you all about them in great detail so you don't have to try them yourself, and not surprisingly, she's at it again. Her most recent foray into alternative wellness treatments is vaginal steaming.

If this sounds familiar, it's because it's one of the (many) vag-related services endorsed by Gwyneth Paltrow on her lifestyle site, Goop, and was promptly discredited by OB-GYNs. Anyway, Teigen just posted a photo of herself sitting on a vaginal steamer wearing a face mask and using a heating pad on Instagram, writing, "no I don’t know if any of this works but it can’t hurt right? *vagina dissolves*."

More: Gwyneth Paltrow Steams Her Vagina, but Here's Why You Def Shouldn't

So, we're glad that she acknowledges that she's not sure if steaming your vagina works because it's better than a full-blown endorsement, but in case, like Teigen, you're wondering: No, it doesn't work, and it's not necessary.

And in case you're also wondering what steaming your vagina entails, it's basically exactly what it sounds like: Sitting over a bowl of steaming water that's sometimes infused with herbs.

And while Teigen might be right that it might not hurt (although, try telling that to someone with minor burns on their labia), there is no scientific evidence to support the need for vaginal steaming, Dr. Hope Ricciotti and Dr. Hye-Chun Hur, the editors-in-chief of Harvard Women's Health Watch, wrote on the site.

In case you need a refresher, your vagina does not need to be cleaned and — along with practices like douching — vaginal cleansing has long been discouraged by doctors, Ricciotti and Hur wrote.

More: Chrissy Teigen Reveals Why They Created Extra IVF Embryos This Time

"Since the vagina is designed to host a particular array of bacteria, vaginal cleansing can alter this normal balance and may theoretically increase one's risk of vaginal infections," Ricciotti and Hur added. "For that reason, gynecologists do not routinely recommend this practice."

Need more convincing? Read OB-GYN Dr. Jen Gunter's evidence-based takedown of the practice. Chrissy, that includes you.

So, while we applaud her openness about her body and trying new things... Chrissy, we're here to tell you that there's no need to steam your vagina. Like you, it's perfect just the way it is.

How to Stop Peeing During Your Workouts (Other Than Kegels)

I absolutely freaked out the first time it happened.

I was in the midst of a truly brutal boot camp class when the instructor ordered us to start 30 seconds of jumping jacks. No sweat — I've done these millions of times.

Then, it happened: Small amounts of pee — for a lack of better phrasing — started leaking out, and I couldn't do anything to stop it. I figured others would soon be able to see my mini-accident and instantly turned red. Luckily, no one did, but right after class I frantically typed "peeing during workouts" into the browser on my smartphone.

And I let out a huge sigh of relief.

It's actually very common, according to everything I read on trusty Google. Everyone from casual weekend warriors to serious CrossFit competitors reported experiencing what's known medically as stress incontinence, especially during workouts that included a lot of jumping.

More: Turns Out, Abdominal Hypopressive Technique Doesn't Stop Bladder Leaks

"With stress incontinence, the sphincter pelvic muscles, which support the bladder and urethra, are weakened," pelvic floor dysfunction specialist Gail O’Neill, P.T. tells SheKnows. "The sphincter is not able to prevent urine from flowing when pressure is placed on the abdomen, such as when you cough, laugh, lift something heavy, or during certain forms of exercise such as running and CrossFit."

To remedy this, doctors commonly recommend that you regularly tighten your pelvic floor muscles — the ones that help you control the flow of urine — commonly known as Kegels.

However, I've found that doesn't always work. I'm a Kegels fanatic and do Reformer Pilates at least four times a week, and I still deal with stress incontinence.

"Everyone wants a magic exercise: just do a plank, just do a Kegel, just do a squat," adds physical therapist Julie Wiebe. "Creating balance in the system is a bit more complex than just clenching something."

Think outside the Kegel

Stress incontinence can put a kink in your workouts, but Kegels aren't necessarily the way to fix it — especially because the pelvic floor is only one piece of the puzzle. To solve the problem, we have to think about coordinating the work of the group of muscles that control continence, according to Wiebe.

"The system that controls leaks is the same system that creates a strong core: the diaphragm, the pelvic floor and your deep abdominal. So learning to coordinate the action of these three is critical to balancing the continence mechanism," says Wiebe. "That means, how you breathe and how much you clench your abs or your pelvic floor are important."

More: 3 Tips for Managing an Irritable Bladder

First, she recommends finding your true pelvic floor with this little trick.

Then, try a breathing trick known as a piston, which helps women coordinate the work of the muscles differently than a Kegel.

"Learning to let go of your abs and allow the diaphragm to come down for a big breath is a good first step to set up the recoiling action of a piston," says Wiebe.

"Breaths should not be up — chests lifting, shoulders rising on inhale — this often occurs when women are holding their abs tight. See how your breath changes when you relax your abs."

The breath should be lower, with movement of your rib cage below your breasts. This kind of breath will be more connected with your pelvic floor.

"See if you can feel your pelvic floor lower on this new inhale, and lift on exhale. When it lifts on the exhale, that is when you should challenge it on an exertion in fitness," Wiebe adds. "So I teach my patients, 'Blow before you go.' Exhale, feel the pelvic lift, then continue the exhale as you exert or lift. Then let the pelvic floor lower again as you inhale between reps."

Once you have found it, practice allowing to rise (on exhale) and lower (on inhale). "Using that leaning, ski jump idea while you're running and maintaining a pistoning breath will help kick up the system and ease leaks," Wiebe adds.

Other ways to fight stress incontinence

In addition to strengthening exercises, try these other tips to alleviate stress incontinence.

  • Avoid sitting for long periods of time. "Sitting with poor posture weakens the pelvic floor muscles," adds O'Neill. "Take breaks and walk around many times during the day."
  • No more "just in case" peeing. Most people, if they are leaking, think that going to the bathroom prior to exercising will reduce the leaking, according to O'Neill. "Although this may seem like a logical tactic, it is signaling the brain to tell the bladder to empty before it has achieved its necessary fullness," she advises. "Your bladder will prematurely need to empty more not less."
  • Stay hydrated before and during your workouts. Some people think that if they drink less, they will need to pee less. The opposite is true, according to O'Neill. "Your urine becomes more concentrated," she says. "This actually irritates the bladder, making it feel that it needs to be emptied more."

McDonald’s New Cold-Brew Coffee Reviews Should Make Starbucks Nervous

I am reporting this with a straight face, no lie: McDonald's has just launched not one but two new cold-brew drinks, and tons of actual flesh-and-blood coffee addicts are swearing it's better than anything that price-hiking Starbucks has on offer.

This might be a game changer, caffeine fans. So the new drinks at Mickey D's are a cold-brew frozen coffee and a cold-brew frappe, and they are blowing people's minds (and palates).

MoreStarbucks Is Adding 2 Frappuccinos to Its Permanent Menu

Let's get the ingredients out of the way first, shall we? These new 300-calorie bevvies are rocking the usual coffee goodness: ice, cream, skim milk, sugar and (duh) water, which makes coffee — you know — liquid

But here's where the ingredients list takes a turn for the processed: cold-brew coffee extract (water + cold brew coffee) is next on the list. Um, why they are using coffee extract instead of coffee is a bit confusing, but hey, nobody ever said McDonald's was a farm-to-table Michelin-starred restaurant, right? Other dubious-but-sadly-familiar ingredients include caramel color, dipotassium phosphate, guar gum (yum!), mono and diglycerides, tripotassium citrate, disodium phosphate and carrageenan, which is a lab-produced cross between seaweed and David Carradine. Totally kidding, we actually don't know what it is. This list is starting to look like the ingredients in jet fuel. Maybe that's the point. Vroooooooom.

Anyway, those -phates and -trates and -glycerides don't seem to be putting off consumers. And the drinks are cheaper than similar Starbucks brews (not that it's that hard to limbo under Starbucks high price points, as your credit card statement this month may prove). McDonald's new drinks are lighting up the dollar menu at a cool $2, while a Starbucks grande cold brew sells for $3.75. And that Starbucks iced coffee Frappuccino you've been addicted to? That sucker is nearly $4.

MoreMcDonald's Is Rolling Out Self-Serve Kiosks

So, is Starbucks getting panicky about McDonald's surprisingly competitive venture? Looks like it. In May, Bernstein analysts penned a note to investors suggesting that McDonald's may succeed at swiping afternoon coffee-seekers from Starbucks because consumers are “less loyal and more cost-conscious.” Burn!

Check out what Twitter is saying about McDonald's new offerings:

So what if that delicious taste comes from a few lovingly selected chemicals and seaweed derivatives? Twitter is shook. Now, the McDonald's cold-brew rollouts are being offered for a limited time. Or at least, that's what McDonald's is saying at this time. So you might want to hop on the bandwagon for a hot (or cold) minute and let us know what you think of the McDonald's versions of cold-brew pick-me-ups.

Chris Pratt Spotted Laughing With Another Famous Woman, So Obviously He's Dating

If there’s one downside to being famous, it has to be the microscope the public puts you under. The way every movement is analyzed or statement is pulled apart, it can create a real pressure cooker of a situation. So, it's best — as the public — to try and cut back on scrutiny when possible, which makes this new story about Chris Pratt possibly having a new love interest really roll our eyes. Pratt may be an eligible bachelor, and yes, he may be dating again, but should we start presuming that every woman he's spotted with is a new love interest?

More: 9 Things Chris Pratt's Done Since Announcing His Split From Anna Faris

On Father's Day, Pratt was spotted with Katherine Schwarzenegger, the eldest daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver. The pair apparently spent time at a Santa Barbara, California park, according to The Daily Mail. As it happens, the Mail also included photos of the pair laughing together over a simple lunch of picnic food with their report, implying that the pair really got along well and had fun in one another's company. The story also noted that they drove together and stopped for gas in Pratt’s car. Those are really the only details we have and we can't confirm what else Pratt and Schwarzenegger did during their time together.

More: Has Anna Farris Already Moved On From Chris Pratt?

Schwarzenegger's name may ring a bell, but she's a fairly fresh face in the celebrity world. Aside from her famous family, Schwarzenegger has published three books and is a regular contributor to InStyle magazine with a video advice column, according to her website. She’s an animal advocate and an ambassador for the ASPCA. Her children’s book, Maverick and Meis based on a dog she adopted. In 2016 she spoke to Marie Claire about her perspective on life as a young, career-focused woman. She applauded her mother for making her work in a clothing store in her teens. “My mom told me that everyone should either work in a clothing store or a restaurant because it teaches you so much about people. I really agree with that.”

Listen, all we're saying is that there are plenty of reasons why these two might have been spending time together and we don't need to immediately assume it was for romantic purposes. Yes, it's exciting to wonder what's up, especially because we've never seen these two out in public before and yes, it would be great to celebrate a new celebrity couple coming together. But just because two single, famous people happen to be hanging out, we don't need to just jump to conclusions.

Whenever Pratt decides to date again we’ll be happy to see him find someone who makes him happy. And if Schwarzenegger is actually his next great love interest, then more power to them; we can't wait to see how that relationship develops if there is a relationship to begin with. Until then, though, let’s let the guy enjoy a day at the park with a friend.
