Picture your average 17-year-old. You're probably imagining a kid who just got their license, is applying to colleges and spends their free time hanging out with their friends. You probably aren't picturing an Olympic gold medalist, best-selling author or Mirrorball trophy winner, but that's exactly what Laurie Hernandez is. At just 17 years old, Laurie Hernandez has accomplished more than most people can only hope to achieve in a lifetime. She earned multiple medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, won the 23rd season of Dancing with the Stars and recently became the New York Times best-selling author of I Got This: To Gold and Beyond.

We were lucky enough to get a chance to chat with Hernandez, and she gave us all the details on her healthy lifestyle, family traditions and thoughts on Hurricane Maria relief efforts.

SheKnows: What’s the first thing you do in the morning?

Laurie Hernandez: I stretch and think about the day ahead while listening to music and then eat a healthy breakfast.

Typically, I check my phone to make sure I don't have any missed calls or important texts!

SK:  Do you meditate, journal or have any other sort of emotional wellness routine?

LH: Absolutely. My meditation consists of just listening to good music and being outside. Prayer plays a big part too. I keep a journal to remember the many experiences, emotions and opportunities that I am so gratefully blessed to get to meet and experience.

SK: Everyone knows your favorite motto, “You got this.” It’s such a simple, yet powerful positive affirmation. Do you have any other positive affirmations you like to use when you’re not training or performing?

LH: I can use "I Got This" for anything really! Whether it's that extra mile in the gym or having to do something I don't like, I'll say words like this to myself.

SK: What’s your go-to healthy breakfast?

LH: I'm in love with egg whites and wheat toast! That's been my go-to lately.

SK: What is your preferred way to eat eggs? Scrambled? Fried? Hard-boiled?

LH: I'm a big fan of scrambled eggs, but boiled eggs are great for on-the-go. I’ve teamed up with the American Egg Board and one of my new go-to recipes are egg pops! They are delicious and so easy to make. Plus, one large egg contains 6 grams of protein, so it’s nutritious too!

SK: What’s your favorite healthy snack?

LH: My favorite healthy snack is definitely apples, peanut butter and boiled eggs.

SK: You have spoken a lot about your Puerto Rican heritage. Is there a Puerto Rican dish that’s especially meaningful to you?

LH: My favorite is definitely my mom’s Spanish rice with an egg on it! She would make this dish especially for holidays, so I have great memories associated with it.

SK: Any dishes/foods you absolutely can’t stand?

LH: I'm not the biggest fan of olives and mushrooms. Ever since I was a kid, they've been my least favorite.

SK:  What are some of your favorite Puerto Rican traditions that have been passed down to you from your parents?

LH: The biggest tradition is playing music, dancing and getting together with family over the holidays. We've kept that tradition for years and hopefully for many more!

More: These Female Athletes Are Smashing the Patriarchy

SK: If you had to describe your family in three words, what would they be?

LH: Loving, caring and grateful.

SK: You've been a big supporter of Hurricane Maria relief and individuals have been donating their money to try to help Puerto Rico. How do you feel about the U.S. government's response to the disaster?

LH: I think in tough times like these, we as people and especially as Americans need to come together and help one another in any way shape or form.

SK: You have accomplished so much at a young age — more than most people can even dream of. If you could give young girls one piece of advice you wish you had gotten when you were younger, what would you tell them?

LH: My advice would be to go for your goals! Sometimes they might seem scary and out of reach, but it's absolutely worth it when you succeed. You'll never know until you try.

Chelsea Handler is saying goodbye to her Netflix show Chelsea after two seasons.

More: Chelsea Handler's Kardashians Diss Just Makes Her Look Like A Hypocrite

Handler announced the news with a statement on her Twitter, "Like so many across the country, the past presidential election and the countless events that have unfolded since have galvanized me. From the national level down to the grassroots, it’s clear our decisions at the ballot box next year will mark a defining moment for our nation."

She added, "For these reasons, I’ve decided not to return for another season of Chelsea, and instead devote as much time as I can to becoming a more knowledgeable and engaged citizen and to focus on projects that have significance to me."

Instead, the talk show host will be moving away from comedy to focus on real-life issues facing Americans.

"My goal is to be better informed, raise my voice, and participate in a more meaningful way," Handler explained. "I want to travel the country and visit areas and people I don't know enough about, speak at colleges and listen to students, and gain a better understanding of our political divide. I have joined forces with EMILY’s List to elect more women to public office, register people to vote, and campaign for candidates who are fighting for women’s rights."

She is also still partnering with Netflix for a documentary about her experiences educating herself on the political climate in the United States.

"I’m excited to share that I will continue my partnership with Netflix, working together on a documentary where I’ll engage with people I don’t talk with enough — people of different ethnicities, religions and political philosophies," Handler concluded her statement.

She also said Netflix will continue to stream new episodes of Chelsea weekly through the end of the year.

Chip & Joanna Gaines Almost Broke Up Over A Faulty Business Plan

Chip Gaines wasn't kidding around when he said he was going to reveal some of his biggest mistakes in his new book, aptly titled Capital Gaines: Smart Things I Learned From Doing Stupid Stuff.

And, yes, he's done some foolish things.

Luckily, it seems he's made the right moves when it came to dating and marrying his wife Joanna, though there were some bumps in the road.

In the book, Chip recounts a moment when the couple's relationship was at a crossroads. Chip explains the two had been dating for six months when Chip decided to leave his business endeavors in Joanna's hands while he traveled to Mexico for a three-month language immersion trip.

Turns out, Chip didn't plan his getaway so well and Joanna felt the strain.

Chip writes she called him and said "'…You have three days to get back to Texas, or this relationship is over.'"

"My heart broke," Chip writes. "There are hard moments in life when you see yourself for the tonto that you are. This all felt so much bigger than a few bounced checks... It became my mission to prove to Jo, my parents, her parents, and myself that I could do this — that I was the real deal, and I wouldn't stop until I made this entrepreneurial dream of mine a reality."

Looks like he listened to Joanna's threats because the two ended up with their happily ever after, and Chip proved he could accomplish his "entrepreneurial dream."

In the book, Chip shares other tidbits about his relationship with Joanna, including the fact that it wasn't love at first sight.

"The first time I saw Joanna, I knew for sure that I wanted to date her, but I wouldn't say I knew for sure that she was ‘the one,'" Chip explains. "Several dates in, I still wasn't plotting to buy the ring."

But now that they are together, Chip writes that it's their difference that make them strong as a couple, "They say opposites attract. I don't what kind of research has been conducted to back up this theory, but if mine and Jo's relationship is any sort of testament, that statement couldn't be more accurate. During our dating years, it was glaringly obvious how different we were from each other. She's a quiet, detailed, cautiously safe door locker, and I'm a wild, obnoxious break-every-rule-in-the-book risk taker."

Peter Krauss is opening up about why he isn't handing out roses for Season 23 of The Bachelor and, shocker, it's because he "was not ready."

Called it!

More: Corinne Olympios Has a New Boyfriend & a New Show

As soon as news hit that Krauss was joining Bachelor Winter Games it became pretty obvious the show was still interested in grooming him for the top dog position. They just couldn't very well have him pull a 180 after he told Rachel Lindsay he wasn't ready to give her a ring.

"It all just ended so fast," Kraus told Us Weekly of his breakup with Lindsay. "It was just me, sitting there by myself in my own thoughts. That was a really dark couple of days. When you have no outlets, it’s hard to get out of your head."

All sarcasm aside, I still would truly love to see him as The Bachelor, and not just for the fact that he's fun to look at. He also seems to be a genuine guy, as his new interview with Us Weekly would suggest.

"I don’t think I’ve ever had a commitment issue," Kraus said of the rumors that plagued him after he and Lindsay ended things on the show. "It was unfortunate that people took it that way. I’m ready for a lifelong love. It just wasn’t enough time for me. It wasn’t what I needed for myself."

How My Mother’s Untreated Mental Illness Made Me Question Myself

$

Recently, a friend from high school and I were talking about an impending class reunion and the people we would least like to run into. The thing is, she said, we were teenagers, and so everything was a mess anyway, and yet, we were expected to handle so much — academics, college expectations, peer pressure, our first romantic and sexual situations, changing family dynamics. So it was no wonder we treated each other badly or made crappy decisions. We could forgive each other now, at least a little.

When I think about getting through high school in one piece, I wonder if it was actually a miracle. My mother had cancer on and off from the time I was 7 until I was 19, when she died, and also during that time, she suffered from an undiagnosed mental illness she associated with weakness and coped with it by blaming those around her.

She was a single mother who struggled financially and lashed out at my grandmother and me on a regular basis. Amid this chaos, I attempted to not only appear normal, but also achieve academically. It worked — I had friends, I even had a boyfriend, and I did well in school. I’m not bragging. Working hard at school and taking accelerated classes kept me focused and calm. It helped me focus on what was beyond my senior year and even college. It reminded me of a different life.

More: Woman's death shows why we shouldn't define people by their mental illness

During my junior year, I had probably the chastest of relationships with a boy for eight consecutive months. We broke up before the beginning of senior year. I was devastated, and my mother was furious. What happened? What had I done? When she couldn’t figure it out (I didn’t want to tell her that he was actually not interested in girls), she blamed my friends.

This next part will seem ridiculous because it was. It might seem unbelievable, and that is also because it was. My mother decided that the reason this boyfriend and I had broken up was because he was actually cheating on me with a friend of mine. I’m not telling you this because I enjoy the sensationalism of it, but because my mother believed it wholeheartedly. When I insisted that it wasn’t true, she told me that I was simply too stupid to understand what was really going on. For the rest of high school, she insisted that I could not be trusted to make my own decisions about my friends, and therefore, I wasn’t allowed to go places if Friend X would be there. It wasn’t always Friend X, though, because she changed her mind about people, but it was always guaranteed to be someone. Sometimes Friend X was OK, but Friend Y was behaving badly, and I would fall for her machinations. It was a new calculus every day. It wasn’t always worth it to ask to leave the house.

The harder part was that it didn’t end when I graduated high school.

When I moved away to college, she became convinced my roommate was not giving me messages from her. She threatened to pull me out of school. She threw a fit when another roommate wanted us to split the cost of a refrigerator. Everywhere she looked, I was being taken advantage of, and she was apoplectic that I couldn’t see it.

More: I'm Living Proof That Even the Strongest People Battle Depression

There were obviously a lot of factors at play here. My mother was exhausted, from illness and from money worries and from parenting. She was lonely. She was paranoid. She was trying to protect me from other people and from myself. She was unprepared to handle the reality of me leaving home, although she had wanted me to go to college and was constantly telling me how proud she was of me. But this is the thing about having an emotionally abusive relationship with someone who isn’t healthy in other ways — it’s just like any other relationship — it’s complicated. Physical illness doesn’t change the injuries that that person caused your insides. By the time my mother died, I was also exhausted, and then I was relieved.

Here is the point: I always knew that my mother was wrong about my friends. I knew she was wrong about my roommates. She was wrong that I was too stupid and naive. And I didn’t realize that what she believed about me had made itself way deep into my everyday brain until many years later.

Somewhere along the way, I had lost the ability to trust myself about the decisions I made about relationships, about sex, about how I wanted to live my life. When I realized the source of this (thank you, therapy), I was furious.

Women are constantly told we can’t make decisions, that we need someone else to do it for us, specifically, men. It’s still with me now, of course, because these things don’t just go away. Can I really trust friends and partners? Am I willfully missing something? When I feel safe, am I actually in danger? And is this all because I lack some fundamental common sense, or is it because I was told my instincts are faulty?

While I began trying to access the part of myself that knows I am capable of sound judgment, who is powerful and reliable and brave, I also started feeling immensely betrayed. It wasn’t my mother’s fault because the reality was she was deteriorating while all this was happening, but it’s hard to be logical when someone is hurting you, even if they’re hurting themselves.

We were so young, my friend from high school said. How could we carry so much? We all needed a foundation, and when we didn’t have one, we shook, and it became our job to center our own small, soft, tender selves.

Could Oprah Really Run for President in 2020?

Oprah Winfrey has dropped a few hints in recent months that she might be considering a 2020 presidential run. And though she said at one point she doesn't see herself ever running, she also doesn't seem to be ruling out the possibility entirely just yet, as a recent interview with Bloomberg's David Rubenstein would suggest.

A few months after the interview, Winfrey once again created suspicion when she retweeted an article from the New York Post, which stated she was the Democrats' best hope in 2020.

"Thanks for your VOTE of confidence," she wrote.

oprah winfrey tweet 1

oprah winfrey tweet 1

And while it seems unlikely because of her own words saying she will never run, it's still interesting to speculate on the platforms she would champion for if, if, she were to become president.

1. On same-sex marriage

"The God I serve doesn't care whether you're tall or short, or whether you were born black or Asian or gay," Winfrey said in response to an Oprah Show audience member who tried to say Oprah couldn't be Christian and also support gay marriage.

oprah winfrey interview clip 2

2. On female education

"I have a strong interest — and now background experience — in helping girls become who they were meant to be," Winfrey told People in 2016.

She started a school for girls in South Africa, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

3. On war

"I once did a show titled Is War the Only Answer? In the history of my career, I've never received more hate mail — like 'Go back to Africa' hate mail. I was accused of being un-American for even raising the question," Winfrey wrote in a 2006 issue of O Magazine.

Winfrey was challenging the United States' decision to go to war in the Middle East in 2001. Months after the show aired, she allegedly declined George W. Bush's invitation to lead a tour of Afghanistan with him. She was one of the first vocal opponents of the war.

4. On philanthropy

Winfrey has long made education her largest platform. According to Forbes, as of 2012, Winfrey had donated approximately $400 million to educational causes.

Other notable donations include her gift of $12 million to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, $2.5 million to the National Council of Negro Women and $10 million of her own money to Oprah's Angel Network.

5. On health care

Winfrey used her show to support Michael Moore and his 2007 film Sicko, which called for universal health care. "The one film you must see this summer," Winfrey said at the time.

6. On literature

"Some things you do because it is necessary," Winfrey told USA Today on why she discussed books on her show even though the discussions didn't pull in ratings winners.

Winfrey has helped to make literature hip again with her book club. She encourages reading and shares her favorite books with others. She has been so influential in the world of literature, she has even coined the term The Oprah Effect.

7. On religion

Winfrey released a 2015 docuseries called Belief on her network, which looked at religion as a powerful force of good in the world saying, "Our planet is home to countless religions, and nearly every one of those faiths asks us to love — love your God, your family, your neighbor."

oprah winfrey interview clip 3

8. On the 2016 election

Winfrey initially said on Twitter that she had no intention of endorsing anyone in the 2016 election.

oprah winfrey tweet 2

But she later changed her tune and threw her support behind Hillary Clinton.

"Regardless of your politics, it's a seminal moment for women," Winfrey told Entertainment Tonight. "What this says is, there is no ceiling, that ceiling just went boom! It says anything is possible when you can be leader of the free world."

9. On the glass ceiling

Winfrey stated on the T.D. Jakes Show that a female president would shatter the glass ceiling forever. At the time, she was talking about Clinton's run for office. But since she lost in 2016, maybe it's time for another female to step into her place?

10. On her goal in the world

During an interview with Extra on Oct. 16 at a brunch event where Winfrey was celebrating the release of her new book, The Wisdom of Sundays, Winfrey said her goal for the world is to try to bring light to the world.

"How much light can you bring into the world?" Winfrey said. She added of her book, which is a collection of essays for inspiration, "This is just a piece of light."

Breast Cancer In Men Is No Myth — Here's What You Need to Know

$
0
0

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we're happy to celebrate every single warrior who has fought (or is fighting) the good fight — even those who are often unrecognized. We're talking men, here. Yup, we may not hear about it very often, but males are not immune to breast cancer, and all of your loved ones should be on the lookout for breast cancer symptoms.

According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, it's estimated that there will be 2,470 new cases of invasive breast cancer in men in 2017 and 460 male breast cancer deaths in the United States alone.

And as bitter as this pill is to swallow, Doctor On Demand physician Dr. Heather Hawthorne says some of the more stereotypical male behaviors could be playing into these recurring male breast cancer rates. "Men should think twice about those extra beers and wings while watching football," she explains. "Heavy drinking and obesity can increase the levels of female hormones like estrogen in men. Abnormal levels of these hormones can put men at risk for breast cancer."

More: Why As a Survivor, I Hate Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Symptoms of male breast cancer

Early stage breast cancer usually doesn't cause symptoms. Most often, the disease is first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit. As the undiagnosed tumor grows, it can change the appearance and feel of the breast which is why early detection is key and why men are encouraged to get and lumps checked by their doctor.

  • Lumps, often painless but still tender
  • Nipple discharge or itchy, scaly rashes on the nipple
  • Inverted nipple
  • Puckering of the skin on the breast
  • Change in size or shape of the breast
  • Ridges or pitting of the skin around the breast that looks like the skin of an orange

Any change in the breast tissue or surrounding area should be brought to the attention of a doctor. "Although most breast changes in men are noncancerous, men should be examined right away if they notice breast lumps, nipple discharge, skin dimpling or lumps under their armpits or around their collar bone," Dr. Hawthorne says.

Breast cancer is easier to detect in men than women

Even with such a morose subject, there is a bit of a silver lining. As women, we've got it drilled into us to start doing breast self-exams at a young age, normally recommended by our OB/GYN when we start our annuals. Breast cancer is easier to detect in men — that's the good news. But men may not get the same treatment from their doctor. In a man, an asymmetrical lump in the breast tissue will be much more obvious, though men are more likely to ignore many of the symptoms above, including lumps, pain in the breast and discharge from the nipples.

A man's doctor also may not encourage self-checks or even mention these symptoms in an annual wellness exam. And while the warning signs aren't any different in men, they can more deadly if detection is delayed. An interesting 2016 study showed that "tough men" are less likely to let down their guard and be honest with their doctor. "Studies also show that men are 70 to 80 percent less likely to see a doctor than women," Dr. Hawthorne says.

More: Is Christina Applegate's Cancer-Preventing Surgery A Good Option?

Dr. Homayoon Sanati, medical oncologist and medical director of the MemorialCare Breast Center at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, says that he most frequently sees moderately aggressive breast cancer, or Luminal B subtype, in men — making this lack of early detection all the more dangerous. For male breast cancer patients, Dr. Sanati recommends genetic counseling and testing right off the bat to provide the most targeted (and hopefully the most successful) form of treatment.

Don't worry about coming off as a hypochondriac

We're talking about your life here, and any good doctor is going to take you seriously if you notice changes in you or your male partner's breast tissue. Though male breast cancer happens in less than 1 percent of breast cancer cases, as Dr. Sanati reminds us, the symptoms are still serious and not something that should be ignored. In other words, they aren't going to go away on their own if you bury your head in the sand.

Though these symptoms are most often not cancerous, another health problem could be the cause. Many people are alive and well today because their breast cancer was detected and treated early. And whether you're a man or a woman, you know what's going on with your body. You're probably going to notice if there's a big change in your breast tissue or if something doesn't feel quite right. The risk of breast cancer increases with age, family history and lifestyle factors, but regardless of risk, a lot of the success in early detection comes down to knowing what's normal for your breasts — and knowing when to ask for help.

"Don't delay, see your doctor today," Dr. Hawthorne urges. It really is that simple: Awareness and early detection save lives. Sadly, as Dr. Hawthorne has seen firsthand, breast cancers are often diagnosed at more advanced stages in men when they are harder to treat. More often than not, men ignore the symptoms or try to tough it out, Dr. Hawthorne says.

Unfiltered Confessions of Real Women Living with PCOS

$

It's technically been a viable diagnosis since 1935, but polycystic ovarian syndrome wasn't really part of our medical vocabulary until just a few decades ago — and, sadly, for years and years, many doctors thought women were imagining their excruciating symptoms. But not only is the illness very real, it has very real (and devastating) consequences.

No one is sure why, but rates of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) have exploded recently. Not only is PCOS the most common hormonal endocrine disorder in women, according to the PCOS foundation, affecting 5 to 10 percent of us, but it is also responsible for up to 70 percent of infertility in women who have difficulty ovulating.

The syndrome is characterized by small cysts that grow on the ovaries (hence the name) and excess testosterone. Even though it's typically thought of as the "male hormone," all women do naturally have some testosterone. But in PCOS these levels inexplicably skyrocket, preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs and causing symptoms like male-patterned baldness, acne and excess facial hair. Other symptoms include insulin resistance, weight gain and the inability to lose weight, infertility and serious disruption of the menstrual cycle.

More: How Changing My Diet Helped With Managing My PCOS

Ironically, the things that help PCOS the most — diet, exercise and moderate weight loss — are the exact things that the illness makes so difficult, trapping many women in what feels like nature's cruelest catch-22. So, while doctors are learning more and more about this illness, women are left trying treatment after treatment, hoping to find their personal cure and dealing with the fallout however they can. Recently the app Whisper polled their female users about their PCOS "secrets" and what they found shows how dire the situation is (and why we desperately need more funding to study it).

Here are the anonymous confessions of women living with PCOS every day.

1. Sex life? What sex life?

"I have PCOS, which comes with embarrassing body hair. I don't know if I'll ever feel comfortable enough to have sex with someone."

2. You worry all the time about stuff other young women don't even have to think about

"I haven't visited my doctor in 2 years for fear that my condition has worsened and they'll have to remove my ovaries, leaving me barren forever."

3. The uncertainty is terrifying

"I'm scared I'll never be able to have that child or that relationship because I'm not 'normal.'"

4. It makes you question your femininity

"I'm so tired of having PCOS. It messes with my weight, feelings, makes me unable to have a child and, worst of all, makes me feel like less of a woman."

5. People who "slip up" or "accidentally" get pregnant are triggers

"Every time someone tells me they're pregnant I get depressed."

6. It changes your entire life plan

"I found out I have PCOS and have been trying to convince myself that I don't want kids and a family ever since."

7. Weight gain is super easy and weight loss is nearly impossible

"I hate being the fat friend. I have PCOS and a hormonal imbalance so when I try to lose weight I can't lose much. The most I've ever lost is 15 pounds."

9. It makes you hate the very thing you're trying to protect and love: Your body

"I hate not being able to lose weight. I hate irregular periods. I hate body/facial hair. I want a different body."

More: Sasha Pieterse Opens Up About PCOS — What You Need to Know About the Condition

10. It affects your relationships

"I am worried I will disappoint my fiance if it won't allow me to get pregnant. I hope he won't leave me."

11. You never thought you'd say this but... you miss your period

"A few years ago I wished I didn't have a period. Now I have PCOS, no period and am trying to conceive. I miss my period."

12. Where other girls flaunt their bodies, you feel like you have to hide yours

"I have hair all over so I hide my body. It makes life hard for a girl."

13. Periods are even more of an inconvenience than they already are

"When I get my period — if ever — it feels like I got hit with a truck."

Since the news broke on Oct. 5, the downfall of incredibly powerful film producer Harvey Weinstein has been swift and widespread. After multiple women have come forward with allegations of sexual assault, harassment and rape, various actors and affiliated film and television companies have released statements that they are either pulling projects that were in production with The Weinstein Company or outright canceling them.

In canceling or postponing their projects affiliated with The Weinstein Company and by extension Weinstein, the following actors and companies have bravely and boldly marked which side of history they will stand on. There's no reason to believe these various projects, especially those which are canceled for now, will never be made. But canceling or postponing them after all of the work that has gone into them certainly sends a clear message to the world that they'd rather have the project suffer or not exist at all than continue associating with TWC.

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, Tatum released a statement on Instagram and Facebook that his planned film adaptation of the YA novel Forgive Me Leonard Peacock, which tells the story of a young man whose life is forever changed by sexual abuse, would not go ahead with The Weinstein Company.

After acknowledging that what Weinstein allegedly did to the women who have come forward to share their stories was reprehensible, Tatum wrote, "Our lone project in development with TWC — Matthew Quick’s brilliant book, Forgive Me Leonard Peacock — is a story about a boy whose life was torn asunder by sexual abuse. While we will no longer develop it or anything else that is property of TWC, we are reminded of its powerful message of healing in the wake of tragedy. This is a giant opportunity for real positive change that we proudly commit ourselves to."

Miranda was another actor to come forward and not only condemn Weinstein outright, but also announce that he and his In the Heights co-creator, Quiara Alegría Hudes, did not want continue to develop the Tony-winning musical for its film adaptation to be produced by The Weinstein Company. According to Deadline, Miranda was working on a screenplay for the film. Now, he is calling on The Weinstein Company to release the rights to the work, ostensibly so he and Hudes might seek out another production company to bring the project to life.

Hudes released a statement via Twitter, which Miranda stated echoed his own sentiments about the issue. After extending her condolences and feelings of empathy with Weinstein's alleged victims, Hudes wrote, "Unfortunately, my musical In the Heights is tied up in the company. In the Heights is part of my heart and soul. I created it about respect, community, and solidarity. I hope the Weinstein Company has enough grace, in the wake of these revelations, to respect my stand as a woman, and allow us to extricate In the Heights from them."

On Oct. 14, news emerged that the planned Thanksgiving holiday drama biopic, The Current War, would be pushed back to a 2018 release date amid the Weinstein scandal. The film, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon, would have been in the window of qualification for the 2018 Oscars; that will no longer be the case despite hopes being high it would be in contention.

In the wake of the news about Weinstein, Cumberbatch himself made a sharp statement against Weinstein. "I am utterly disgusted by the continuing revelations of Harvey Weinstein’s horrifying and unforgivable actions…We need to collectively stand up and support victims of abuse such as the brave and inspiring women who have spoken out against him and say we hear you and believe you."

This Candy Is Dentists' Top Pick for Halloween

If elementary school health class and pop culture have taught us one thing about dental care, it’s that candy rots our teeth. Considering that’s common knowledge, you’d think dentists would decide to forgo the candy for Halloween trick-or-treating. Nope. According to a survey by the American Dental Association, more than 76 percent of dentists give out some type of candy for the spooky holiday — and one sweet treat is favored over others.

“Halloween is about candy, dressing up and having fun,” says ADA dentist Dr. Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty. “It’s OK to eat that candy on Halloween as a splurge as long as you’re brushing twice a day and flossing once a day all year long.”

The reason? Bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugar and other leftover food in your mouth, producing an acid that can contribute to cavities.

What dentists give trick-or-treaters
Image: American Dental Association

More: 5 Bad Dental Habits to Break Right Now

So which type of candy do dentists opt to hand out themselves? According to the ADA, chocolate is the best bet because it is easiest to wash off your teeth. Not only that, but chocolate contains oils that can decrease the types of bacteria that cause cavities, an ADA spokesperson told Today. And if you’re looking for an even better option, dark chocolate has less sugar than milk chocolate.

And what does the ADA suggest you avoid giving out to trick-or-treaters?

If chocolate is a good option because it washes off easily, then it makes sense that sticky and gummy candies — which get stuck in all your teeth’s nooks and crannies — are not ideal.

More: How Hormones Affect Your Dental Health

Similarly, the ADA suggests skipping hard candy because accidentally (or purposely) chewing on them can break your teeth, and the fact that you’re sucking on them for longer periods of time means that the bacteria have even more time to infiltrate your chompers. Sour candy is another one to avoid since the acid that gives it its appealing tart taste can also weaken your tooth enamel, making you more vulnerable to cavities.

So go on and celebrate Halloween with some candy, but don’t forget to drink plenty of water (it helps keep your mouth cleaner between brushings) and floss and brush regularly.

Has Anna Faris Already Moved on From Chris Pratt?

Brace yourselves for this news, because it is the most bittersweet: Anna Faris reportedly has a new man in her life. We know; it's hard to be happy for her because that man is not Chris Pratt and we are by no means over their breakup. But fam, this is what she wants, so we need to put back together the pieces of our broken hearts and deal with this.

The gentleman in question is reportedly cinematographer Michael Barrett, who worked with Faris on her upcoming film Overboard. Separate eyewitnesses say the pair had dates at Modo Mio, an upscale Italian joint in Los Angeles, twice in two days.

On their first date, an onlooker said they sat together on the patio and split a bottle of red wine. The witness told E! News that the get-together looked "like a date," and that "[t]hey were laughing at the table. She looked very happy and had a smile on her face when she was leaving." They reportedly left the restaurant together after Barrett picked up the tab.

The following day, they reportedly went back to Modo Mio, where they again split a bottle of wine, but this time over dinner. An onlooker said they shared "several dishes of various pasta and salad," before again leaving together with their leftovers.

"It was definitely a dinner date," the witness said. "It seemed romantic in the way they were looking at one another and how they were laughing at the table... No one in the restaurant realized it was her, but she definitely looked to be on a date."

It's been over a month since the first time Faris and Barrett were spotted together. On Sept.10, they attended a carnival together and photographers managed to catch them despite their attempts to hide under baseball caps.

Hilaria Baldwin Wants a 4th Kid With Alec Baldwin, Stat

Hilaria and Alec Baldwin already have three (very) little ones together — all still under the age of 4. But Hilaria, a fitness and yoga expert, told Access Hollywood on Wednesday she is totally down for another kid. Like, yesterday.

She said in the interview, “Yes! I would totally do one more... for some reason, right after I deliver a baby, I want another one. It’s kind of, I feel like it’s like going down this, like, crazy slide, and then you’re like, ‘I wanna go again.’ 'Cause it’s just so invigorating, and I had great experiences.” Hilaria, you are hilarious. It's OK to take a moment to gather your procreative thoughts. Breathe.

Baldwin really makes childbirth sound like a fun ride at Six Flags, right? She seems like one of those peppy, endlessly cheerful, naturally caffeinated types — which probably goes a long way when you're hauling three toddlers from 4 a.m. to midnight. Still, we hope she gets her doctor's approval before hopping on the, er, "crazy slide" again. Go easy on that uterus, girl. Maybe take a nap before you make any rash decisions.

More: Yoga Class Dropout Tries Again With Hilaria Baldwin

But it seems like she's made up her mind based on the interview. “It’s definitely something we would consider doing again. One more time!" she gushed. "But, like, imagine if it were twins! Oh, my God. Or triplets? No, that would not happen. Doesn’t run in our family.”

Watch out, Hilaria. Saying you're not going to have triplets is a surefire way to get the procreation gods laughing at you and sending you just that. Baldwin triplets?? Come on. You just invoked the universe's frat boy sense of humor, Hilaria.

Married since 2012, the Baldwins share Carmen Gabriela, 4, Rafael Thomas, 2, and Leonardo Angel. Alec Baldwin also has daughter, Ireland, 21, with Kim Basinger, who is currently somewhere on this planet sipping a dry martini and trying not to smirk at this latest Baldwin baby news.

Hilaria's enthusiasm for childbirth is matched only by her fever-pitch excitement for coordinating family Halloween costumes. “Last year, we did The Incredibles, and this year, we have a whole new thing,” she said in the interview. “I’m not gonna tell you what it is. But I am so excited about it!”

We hope Alec is as jazzed about Halloween — and/or a fourth baby — as his wife is. Somehow it seems like he might be a tough sell on both, but what do we know?

We can't be positive, but it definitely seems like Starbucks' new holiday cups are getting distributed to stores and should be available within a few weeks.

The new cups seem to go in a totally new direction, featuring a hand-drawn motif — one that features a Christmas tree, doves, a stack of presents, snowflakes, two people holding hands and a red ribbon running around the entire cup. It’s romantic and seasonal for sure, but only time will tell if this reveal is actually a leak or someone just trying to spoof us.

But in the meantime, more and more confirmation that they're the real deal just keeps coming. In the most recent news, the couple apparently had a secret tea party with Queen Elizabeth, allowing her and Markle to spend some time together, since she'll have to give Harry, the fifth in line for Britain's royal throne, permission before he can wed.

There are rumors that it wasn't the first time Markle has met the queen, but it could be the first time they got significant face time together. Reports say the queen hosted Harry and Markle for tea in her own private sitting room on the first floor of Kensington Palace, just two days after she returned from a long holiday at the family's estate in Scotland. Oh, and those reports also say the queen fully approves of Markle, but why wouldn't she? The Suits actress is a delight.

Markle has also already met many other members of the royal family, including Harry's father and stepmother, and Prince William and duchess Kate Middleton. They've all reportedly given the thumbs up, so it's really just a matter of time before actress Meghan Markle becomes Princess Meghan Markle.

As for the wedding? Since William and Kate are expecting another baby in April and Harry won't want to overshadow the new arrival to the family, the soonest we can expect a royal wedding is probably next summer.

Mayim Bialik Officially & Clearly Apologizes for Her NYT Op-Ed

Updated Oct. 19, 2017, 9:50 a.m. PT: On Thursday, Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik officially and without a doubt apologized for her divisive op-ed that was published on Friday, October 13. She posted an apology taking responsibility for her actions (versus the slight more roundabout apology she gave on Facebook Live earlier in the week).

Mayim Bialik Formal NYT Apology Tweet

Mayim Bialik Formal NYT Apology Tweet

She wrote, "I want to address my op-ed in the NY Times, and the reaction to it. Let me say clearly and explicitly that I am very sorry. What you wear and how you behave does not provide any protection from assault, nor does the way you dress or act in any way make you responsible for being assaulted; you are never responsible for being assaulted."

Bialik went on to write, "I applaud the bravery of the women who have come forward. I support these women as we seek out and demand accountability from the only ones responsible for assault and rape: the people who perpetrate these heinous crimes. I am motivated and driven to work hard to empower women," before reiterating her apology to readers.

Updated Oct. 16, 2017, 10:15 a.m. PT: Mayim Bialik appeared in a Facebook Live video interview with The New York Times opinion section Monday, and unsurprisingly, her weekend op-ed was the first thing she discussed. Bialik was heavily criticized for the wording of her op-ed in which many thought she victim-blamed survivors of sexual assault by saying that wearing conservative clothing and not flirting could protect women.

"I’ve gotten a lot of really positive reception, which honestly I was very surprised how passionately people felt about it. And yes, I have stayed off social media, but it has become clear to me that there are people who think I either implied or overtly stated that you can be protected from assault because of the clothing you wear or the behavior that you exhibit," Bialik said. "That is absolutely not what my intention was. I think that it is safe for me to start this conversation by saying there is no way to avoid being the victim of assault by what you wear or the way you behave. I really do regret that this became what it became, because I was trying to speak about a very specific experience I’ve had in a very specific industry. I was not looking to speak about assault and rape in general. The only people who are responsible for their behavior in assault is the predators who are committing those horrendous acts."

She also put responsibility on the women who have been telling their Hollywood sexual harassment stories to "turn this around," saying they need to keep the conversation going.

"I’m a human being and… absolutely I’m deeply, deeply hurt if any woman in particular who has been assaulted, or man, thinks that in any way I was victim-blaming," Bialik added. "In 900 words, I did the best I could to describe an entire, very complicated dynamic that is really best left for a thesis or an hourlong talk and not a 900-word piece."

Original story:

On Friday, the New York Times published an op-ed by The Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik titled "Being Feminist in Harvey Weinstein's World." Although Bialik is an open advocate for women's rights, many accused the actress of shaming victims in the piece. Now, Bialik has responded to the "vicious" backslash.

In the original op-ed, Bialik described herself as an outsider by many standards in Hollywood. She admitted to feeling pressure to conform but maintains that she stayed true to herself and made the kind of "conservative choices" that her first-generation American parents taught her were important.

However, in making her point, Bialik ruffled feathers by seeming to imply that the clothes women wear and even the actions of the men around them are contributing factors in harassment and abuse and that women themselves are responsible for controlling those factors.

Bialik's mom "encouraged me to be myself in audition rooms, and I followed my mother's strong example to not put up with anyone calling me 'baby' or demanding hugs on set," she wrote. "I was always aware that I was out of step with the expected norm for girls and women in Hollywood."

She went on to reference her extended absence from Hollywood, followed by her comeback playing "androgynous, awkward" Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory. But again, in elucidating the significance of portraying such a relatable woman on-screen and being one in real life, Bialik made points that proved polarizing to readers.

More: A Timeline of Harvey Weinstein's Life in Hollywood

"As a proud feminist with little desire to diet, get plastic surgery or hire a personal trainer, I have almost no experience with men asking me to meetings in their hotel rooms. Those of us in Hollywood who don't represent an impossible standard of beauty have the 'luxury' of being overlooked and, in many cases, ignored by men in power unless we can make them money," she penned.

"I still make choices every day as a 41-year old actress that I think of as self-protecting and wise," she continued. "I have decided that my sexual self is best reserved for private situations with those I am most intimate with. I dress modestly. I don't act flirtatiously with men as a policy."

Female readers quickly put Bialik on blast for this perceived victim shaming — among them actress Patricia Arquette, who wrote on Twitter, "I have to say I was dressed non provocatively as a 12 year old when men on the street masturbated at me. It's not clothing."

Mayim Bialik Backlash 1

Mayim Bialik Backlash 1

On Sunday night, Bialik also took to Twitter to address the now-controversial Times op-ed.

Mayim Bialik Backlash 2

Mayim Bialik Backlash 2

"I'm being told the N.Y. Times piece resonated with so many and I am beyond grateful for all of the feedback," she wrote. "I also see a bunch of people have taken my words out of the context of the Hollywood machine and twisted them to imply that God forbid I would blame a woman for her assault based on her clothing or behavior. Anyone who knows me and my feminism knows that's absurd and not at all what this piece was about. It's so sad how vicious people are being when I basically live to make things better for women."

More: Matt Damon Denies Having Any Knowledge of Harvey Weinstein's Misconduct

At this point, many women appear to still find fault with Bialik's original sentiments and with her response. Comments to the latter accuse Bialik of hypocrisy, faux feminism, internalized misogyny and more.

However, Bialik further noted in her response tweet that she will be participating in a Facebook Live segment with the Times on Monday morning to discuss the backlash further. "Let's discuss then," she signed off, inviting women who don't agree with or understand her commentary to engage in conversation.

Billy Joel Expecting Second Child at Age 68

Billy Joel has a way about him, clearly. He and his wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, are expecting Baby No. 2 next month, the singer recently told the Belfast Telegraph.

Their first baby, Della Rose, is 2 years old. He also has an older daughter (with ex-wife Christie Brinkley), Alexa Ray Joel, 31. If you're thinking, "Wait; doesn't that make Alexa R. Joel the daughter just four years younger than Alexis R. Joel the wife?" you would be correct. Billy Joel, meanwhile, will turn 69 in the spring.

Joel has a pretty chill approach to fatherhood late (some would say very late) in life: He's just counting on another excellent sleeper. Joel told the publication that toddler Della Rose has a “pretty good” nap schedule right now. “She sleeps through the night... I hope the next one will,” he said. Good luck with that!

What does Joel do these days for fun? Sounds like he's a hands-on dad and loving it. "I hang out with her," the singer said, "and watch her little wheels spin. And she’s a hoot. She’s a funny kid. She loves to laugh. I like to make her laugh.”

Joel said he's also hoping to take Della Rose with him when he plays in Dublin in summer 2018. “She is coming with me. She has Irish roots.’’

We can't wait to meet the new little Joel soon, and for both parents' sake, we hope that kid sleeps for the longest time.

9 Walking Dead Characters That Will Probably Die This Season

After seven seasons, it feels like it's easy to predict what will happen on The Walking Dead. We've seen it all at this point, from the forging of new friendships and uneasy alliances to unexpected romantic relationships, and on the list goes until we arrive at shocking or incredibly emotional deaths. When the Grim Reaper comes knocking on TWD, it's always bad, but considering death isn't exactly the end for these characters (remember that they turn into zombies once they die no matter how they die), their deaths can be especially emotional. We've said goodbye to many beloved characters over the years. From Laurie to Herschel to the most recent victims, Glenn and Abraham, TWD has often pulled the rug out from under its viewership when it comes to offing a beloved character.

TWD Season 8 Comic Con Trailer

TWD Season 8 Comic Con Trailer

As we move on into Season 8, it's clear that something big is brewing: war. TWD Season 8 will in fact draw from the "All Out War" storyline from the TWD comics. Like the title of this storyline suggests, a massive war between the Hilltop and Kingdom survivors against the Saviors is going to be the focus of this season. War means casualties, and with at least one major death being teased, it's only fair to wonder who could meet an untimely end.

Here are our best guesses for TWD's next major death.

Eugene

TWD Eugene
Image: Gene Page/AMC

Eugene is a slippery fish on TWD. Skilled in engineering, obtaining information and obtaining supplies, he has completely switched loyalties and now works with the Saviors. As a traitor to Rick and his team, Eugene could very certainly meet an untimely end as a kind of revenge killing from one of Rick's team members.

Rosita

TWD Rosita
Image: Gene Page/AMC

The last we saw of Rosita, she was laid up in a bed at Hilltop recovering from the Season 7 finale shootout between the Hilltop and Kingdom survivors and the Saviors. Rosita has been with us since Season 4. Losing a character of her veteran status would be a blow to us, the viewers, and it would be a blow to the characters on the show. However, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that she could meet her end, either from the injury sustained in that firefight or from a wartime attack.

More: An Ode to TWD's Negan — Because He's Not the Worst Villain on TV

Ezekiel

TWD Ezekiel
Image: Gene Page/AMC

As the leader of the Kingdom, Ezekiel is a leader with a target on his back. Having officially teamed up with Rick in order to defeat Negan, Ezekiel's survival is not guaranteed, no matter how skilled a fighter he is or considering the fact that he has his tiger, Shiva. His death would have a serious impact on the show and the characters in this world, but it's not out of the question to think he could die this season.

Gabriel

TWD Gabriel
Image: Gene Page/AMC

From the Season 8 trailer, things aren't looking too good for Gabriel right now. It appears he will be taken prisoner by Negan at some point in the season, which is rarely ever a good thing (remember what happened to Sasha at the end of Season 7?). As a supporting character and as a man who is most likely going to be trapped in Negan's clutches, now's the time to start wringing your hands about Gabriel's fate.

Negan

TWD Negan
Image: Gene Page/AMC

Like Rick (see below), Negan's death isn't guaranteed in Season 8, but damn if his chances of being offed aren't incredibly high. He's a prime target for the Hilltop survivors as well as Rick's close friends; killing Negan would be a major, major victory. Going into a wartime situation means that someone major is going to have to go, and that could very well be TWD's biggest villain to date.

Dwight

TWD Dwight
Image: Gene Page/AMC

As a formerly high-ranking Savior who has betrayed Negan, Dwight might be a prime target for the Saviors in Season 8. Killing him would mean other Saviors get to prove their loyalty to Negan, and it would mean that Rick's team loses a key source of intel. At this point, going into a new season, Dwight's chances are decently split in regard to whether or not he'll survive.

Simon

TWD Simon
Image: Gene Page/AMC

As one of Negan's top Saviors and a high-ranking and skilled fighter, he could logically be killed in a wartime scenario. If Rick's group got ahold of Simon, there's plenty they could do to glean information from him before killing him. It would certainly be a surprise to see Simon go, but his chances of survival are a bit lower than the more prominent characters on TWD.

Michonne

TWD Michonne
Image: Gene Page/AMC

Michonne is a solid lead character who has endured her fair share of hardship. At the end of Season 7, she literally fought for her life against one of the survivors in Negan's ranks, enduring serious injuries that left her laid up in bed. While we know she'll be OK (she's always been a fighter), considering that affectionate relationship she has with Rick as well as her prominence as a skilled fighter, there's a chance she could be a surprise kill in Season 8; the loss of Michonne would be a serious and surprising blow to the team.

Rick

TWD Rick
Image: Gene Page/AMC

When it comes to love and war, anything is possible. Considering Rick will find himself embroiled in a massive war that will likely take more lives than prisoners, it's only fair to prepare for the worst where he's concerned. It would be a huge victory, symbolically or otherwise, for Negan to kill Rick in Season 8. As the leader of his group, Rick's life has always been in danger, but with the stakes so high this season, we should be extra worried about his well-being.

Taylor Swift's New Promo Is Confusing the Heck Out Of Us

Dropping surprise tracks is kind of thing the new version of Taylor Swift would do — and she just did it again. In a very weird, very cryptic (as per usual with all Reputation-related material) post to her Instagram, she teased her new single, "Gorgeous," which is apparently dropping on October 19 at midnight.

More: Taylor Swift Continues World Domination With New Lifestyle App

The video does not reveal much. It's really just a magenta ombré background with the word "Gorgeous" written all over it, and when you hit play, you hear a toddler girl's voice say, "Gorgeous," and a beat... and that's it. Come on, T-Swift, we need more to go on than this.

Taylor Swift teases yet another new single on IG Gorgeo

Taylor Swift teases yet another new single on IG Gorgeo

What this lack of information does, however, is let our imaginations run absolutely rampant with theories about the new single. First and foremost, we have one huge question: Who is the toddler whose voice is sampled in the teaser?

More: Taylor Swift & Her Squad Forgo 4th of July Festivities This Year

We have a theory, and it would be one really giant plot twist, fam. What if — wait for it — the toddler is —keep waiting — North West, the first born child of Swift's publicly sworn nemeses, power couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West? We know, it's a stretch. But think of the publicity! This of the potential shadiness. Think of how much this would stir the drama pot. You have to admit, Kimye and Swift are some very publicity-centered celebrities, so this kind of behavior is not entirely outside the realm of possibility for either side, even if we are mostly speculating here and have no real way to confirm our theory.

That said, in the interest of investigative journalism, we have found a video of North's voice and tried to compare it for ourselves to the very tiny voice on "Gorgeous."

North West voice to compare to new T Swift track

The verdict? We can't say for sure it is North on the track, but we also can't say it's not. And in case it helps sway opinions one way or another, West has a track that is also called "Gorgeous." So this is either Swift still being shady as hell (WE GET IT, YOU'RE MAD AT KANYE), or it's a clue. And we all know how much Swift loves clues.

When Robbie and Kirsten Schloss figured out that none other than Bill Murray was seated behind them at a Chicago Cubs playoff game, they got bold and asked the iconic actor if he'd lend them a hand with sharing some big pregnancy news with their parents.

Murray agreed — and the result is one of the best pregnancy announcements we've ever seen. Robbie shared video of the moment this week on Instagram.

“Hey, I got news for you. You’re gonna be grandparents,” says Murray, while the couple grins delightedly. Robbie adds in first-time proud-papa style, "We’re having a baby!” The couple is due mid-April 2018.

In 2014, the actor thrilled the revelers at a bachelor party when he stopped in and gave an impromptu speech about finding the one. Soon thereafter, he photobombed an engagement session (not that anyone minded — isn't the best thing about Bill Murray sightings the fact that everyone is always happy to see him?).

How did Robbie and Kirsten and Bill's pregnancy announcement go over with the folks? Robbie talked about the excitement in a post on the Love What Matters Facebook page. He said that the recording made his parents cry and that he and Bill "talked casually during the game and he playfully switched glasses with Kirsten for a minute since his shades make the entire stadium turn blue... After the Cubs win I told Bill I needed him to make our pregnancy announcement. Kirsten struggled with fertility so we decided not to make it public at first but this was too fun to pass up.”

You bet it was too fun. We're really glad the couple went public with the adorable announcement — and we'll keep our fingers crossed for the happy day when we finally get our own life moment with Bill Murray.
