$

Film and television are rapidly changing mediums. Where race, and specifically black womanhood, is concerned, there is a growing consciousness of how we converse about and portray it in these mediums. Enter a new cadre of rising black female stars who are everywhere in film and television. Each of these women is absolutely amazing, but what's even better? They're vocal about their blackness, loving of their blackness and are in Trump's America.

Yara Shahidi

Shahidi is an unstoppable force in television. As Zoey on Black-ish, Shahidi has carved out a niche on primetime television for young black women to gather around. With talk of a Black-ish spinoff that would focus on Zoey's collegiate experiences in Trump's America, Shahidi has a unique opportunity to transcend, being more than just a pretty face or typecast actor and really home in on the various issues directly affecting young black women today.

Issa Rae

Issa Rae Insecure HBO
Image: John P. Fleenor/HBO

Rae is definitely a major force for change when it comes to empowering, reshaping and better understanding what it means to be a black woman in television and in the real world. Insecure has put Rae on the map as as a multi-hyphenate powerhouse. The show has returned a voice and identity to black women that we rarely get to see on TV. The Insecure Issa is a woman who pushes back against definitions thrust upon her by white peers and is often caught in a range of moral and ethical issues that transcend the limits of stereotypes. Rae will not only continue to do great things, but she'll continue to do great things for black women on TV.

Amandla Stenberg

Amandla Stenberg Red Carpet
Image: Fayes Vision/WENN.com

Stenberg caught our eye in The Hunger Games, but she is no one-hit wonder. Stenberg has been vocal about her politics, not only chatting about feminism with Gloria Steinem, but continuing to speak out against President Trump on her Instagram. Additionally, Stenberg is in full support of the black female community, regularly supporting the Art Hoe Collective, an artistic community dedicated to lifting up the work of women of color, free from stereotypes or specific labels.

Even better, Stenberg chooses her roles wisely these days — she doesn't let race guide her hand but rather lets it act as the doorway to finding roles that change the conversation around black womanhood. Case in point: She will soon be seen in Where Hands Touch, which tells the story of a mixed-race German Jewish woman caught up in the Holocaust while falling in love with a young Nazi.

Janelle Monáe

Janelle Monáe Red Carpet
Image: WENN.com

I mean, how can you not love Monáe. 2016 was all about Monáe moving from music into film, and let me tell you, the transition was seamless. Monáe chose her film roles well and ended the year being in two of the most critically praised and well-received films of 2016, Hidden Figures and Moonlight. Not that she had to prove anything, but Monáe certainly made audiences sit up and take notice. Her quiet determination, her resilience and her incredible intellect — all of which are readily apparent in her musical career — flowed seamlessly out of her soul into Hidden Figures and Moonlight. Monáe has yet to announce her next project, but there's no doubt that whatever she chooses, she'll yet again change the game regarding how we watch black women in film.

Zazie Beetz

Zazie Beetz Red Carpet
Image: Adriana M. Barraza/WENN.com

Beetz had a somewhat thankless role on FX's breakout hit Atlanta. That's not to say that Atlanta is not an amazing show, nor is it to say that Beetz is the worst part about the show. No, instead, as the only lead woman on a show by, about and arguably for black men, Beetz was holding her own and breaking through some big stereotypes about black women on TV. As Van, Earn Marks' ex-girlfriend and mother to a baby girl with Earn, Beetz had to shoulder the weight of not being reduced to a shrill, nagging baby mama or the stereotypical gold-digging lady in the life of a man in the music industry. Van was never reduced and Beetz never let Van stay down. Beetz will continue to bash down barriers on Atlanta, and Van will, hopefully, continue to shine a character who is so not interested in playing out some tired tropes.

Sasha Lane

Lane stunned us with her quiet, poetic power in American Honey. The indie film that went all the way to Cannes left an indelible mark on audiences, serving as an ode to the blue-collar zeitgeist happening in middle America. Lane, discovered by chance and promptly thrust into the spotlight, has renegotiated how we perceive mixed-raced women. In an attempt to dispel definitions of how she should look as a mixed-race woman, Lane gave an ode to her locs for Teen Vogue. She seeks to make her racial background a fact rather than a curiosity, which can only be a benefit when it comes to choosing roles and steering her way through Hollywood.

Yvonne Orji

Yvonne Orji Insecure HBO
Image: John P. Fleenor/HBO

On Insecure, Issa's BFF Molly was a bit of a mess: she was a career woman dead set on finding true love, but often ended up sabotaging her potential relationships with her overzealousness. Molly's truth was brought to the small screen thanks to the passionate skill of Orji. Orji is a true fresh face (Insecure is her second credit on IMDb) in the world of film and television but there is no doubt that her nuanced work on Insecure, which details the inherently fraught nature of being a black woman on the dating scene, will catapult her into amazing roles.

Zoe Kravitz

Kravitz has been in our consciousness for some time (being the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet will do that) but her star has risen exponentially over the last few years. After catching our eye in the Divergent film franchise, Kravitz is tackling TV with the limited HBO series Big Little Lies. While Kravitz has taken roles that include conversations around blackness or black life in America — think Dope — Kravitz told i-D magazine in 2016 that she doesn't actively take roles revolving around her race. In doing so, Kravitz could make blackness universal as whiteness has been portrayed on TV, further making room for more black women onscreen.

Rachel Lindsay

Rachel Lindsay Kimmel

Lindsay is not an actor but she will soon be a dominant and famous face in the cultural zeitgeist. As the first black Bachelorette, Lindsay will be breaking down barriers on one of the most popular reality TV shows in America by simply starring in it. Furthermore, she'll be re-shaping America's possible misconceptions about the kind of love black women can receive, the kind of love they deserve and return some agency to black women when it comes to choosing their own life partners. Go girl!

Angelina Jolie DGAF About Hollywood and it's Time We All Accept It

$

Page Six recently published an article titled Angelina may have the kids, but Brad gets custody of Hollywood and I think it's total bullshit.

The article alleges that despite Jolie's best attempts to scheme her way into Hollywood favor, her efforts have failed.

"After Pitt’s triumphant appearance at the Globes, " the author crows "Jolie apparently realized there was, in fact, one thing even she couldn’t do: Make people in Hollywood hate Brad Pitt. The subtext was even worse: They tolerated her only because of him."

The article goes on to say, "It seems Jolie has begun to realize that so much of her star power and goodwill was on loan from Pitt. Without it, her future in Hollywood is uncertain at best, and the damage she has done to her highly crafted image may be irreparable."

I'm so over this angle. And what's more, I'm not buying it.

More: Angelina Jolie Stays Strong While Discussing Her Divorce From Brad Pitt

I don't buy reports of Jolie scrambling for a PR person or obsessing about whether or not Hollywood likes her or Brad Pitt more. I don't buy the handful of reports painting her as some sort of conniving witch scrambling for social leverage. And while I (obviously) have no inside ties to the gold-flecked elites of Hollywood and thus, have no idea of the article's assertion that Jolie has always been unpopular and disliked by the Tinseltown in-crowd is true, I would be willing to bet that even if it is, true, Angelina Jolie truly couldn't care less.

Guys, Jolie doesn't give a fuck about Hollywood and it's time we all just accepted it. Aside from using the machinery of the town to give voice to the stories she thinks need to be told, what interest has she ever had in that incestuous microsystem?

Do you see Jolie getting papped going for a daily Starbucks? Or "accidentally" getting caught looking picture-perfect walking from the gym to her waiting SUV, toned abs glistening? Does Jolie jump into any interview that'll have her? Is she milking her fame into endless covers and blockbusters and red carpet appearances? Has she given tell-all interviews with Brad where she shows off her home and freshly scrubbed kids, stood grinning in her immaculate kitchen, spatula in hand?

Fuck no. She has not.

None of that fits with the Angelina Jolie we've seen in the last decade. She's put her head down, done the work, dedicated herself to her family and her films, and only begrudgingly participated in the Hollywood rigamarole of magazine covers and awards shows.

More: Ultimate Woke Bae Angelina Jolie Speaks Out For Refugees

She's done interviews as required to promote her films. She thoroughly understands the rabid frenzy surrounding her life and her family and has used it advantageously. Pictures of the Jolie-Pitt twins famously fetched $14 million – every penny of which was then donated to charity. So while she's undoubtedly savvy (Jolie doesn't use a publicist, instead preferring to adeptly navigate the Hollywood world on her own terms) she's never really seemed to buy into it.

Instead, over the past decade, Jolie has focused far more on her work with the UNHCR as Goodwill Ambassador and then Special Envoy, and her film credits have skewed more towards directing and producing significant, challenging stories like The Land of Blood and Honey, Unbroken, and most recently, First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers.

These are not glamorous stories. They're not opening to hundred-million box offices. They don't feature lists of A-list stars or earn her bushels of awards. They're movies that make people uncomfortable because they confront the atrocities we'd rather forget - but Jolie won't let us.

More: Angelina Jolie Might Quit Acting

And, while everyone's been obsessed with her divorce and her PR strategy and who's winning "custody" of fully-grown adults Hollywood, she's been in Cambodia premiering First They Killed My Father – a film in which the actors are all Cambodian citizens, many who survived the genocide themselves while also losing their families. The film is entirely in Khmer with English subtitles and involves her son, Maddox, born in Cambodia, in the film's creation and production.

So, yeah. I'm sure that while premiering this film for Cambodian royalty and actual survivors of this horrific genocide Jolie is super upset that Brad Pitt showed up tanned at the Golden Globes and everyone clapped for him.

Please.

We'll definitely be seeing more articles about how much Hollywood hates Angelina Jolie in the coming months – nothing irritates the massive egos of actors and producers more than someone who doesn't care about them. But none of us should be pretending that she gives a fuck about it, because trust, she's got far more important things on her mind.

Anthony Bourdain scored himself an Italian hottie

Anthony Bourdain clearly knows the way to a woman's heart is through her stomach.

Bourdain reportedly charmed Italian actress Asia Argento while she shot an episode of Bourdain's show Parts Unknown in Rome. Page Six confirms these two are officially an item, after they were spotted holding hands and kissing at a local market by an Italian magazine.

More: Anthony Bourdain’s Thoughts on Australian Cuisine

In a CNN blog article written by Bourdain following the wrap of his Rome episode, he called Argento "truly magnificent" and praised her for her involvement in the production.

"[Asia] was herself. Always honest, completely unsparing," Bourdain wrote.

He added, "Asia has a reputation for saying what she feels, regardless of what people might think."

Bourdain split from his MMA fighter wife Ottavia Busia last September, though the separation was super amicable. Busia even explained to Page Six, "Because of professional decisions we both have made, my husband and I have been for years in an unconventional relationship. Nothing has changed. We love each other. We respect the decisions the other has made. And we'll always consider ourselves a family."

Given that Bourdain has said in the past that he's on the road for 250 days out of the year, it must be hard to maintain any type of relationship. But with Argento's established acting career, it could be that these two will be a match made in Hollywood heaven. She is best known for co-staring in Vin Diesel's 2002 film xXx.

Christina El Moussa and Gary Anderson are no more.

More: Can HGTV Force Tarek and Christina El Moussa to Stay Together?

El Moussa's rep Cassandra Zebisch all but admitted to the fact that the public pressure was too much for the couple, who began dating sometime in mid-2016 after El Moussa separated from her soon-to-be ex-husband, Tarek.

Zebisch told Us Weekly El Moussa and Anderson, "broke up because of too many outside pressures." Aka. All the media attention was their undoing.

No doubt neither party anticipated the frenzy that has become the El Moussa divorce. Heck, even I'm still confused by it. It seems like everyone is frantically looking for some sort of big, dramatic story between the two that just simply isn't there.

More: Finally, Photos of Christina El Moussa and Her Boyfriend Gary Anderson

But in the midst of the hurricane that is the rumors surrounding this divorce saga, it appears El Moussa is planning on finding a quieter place for herself in the upcoming months.

"Christina is single and being in a relationship is the last thing on her mind," Zebisch said. "She is taking this time to focus on her children and herself."

That seems to have become the El Moussa's divorce tagline: They're focusing on themselves and their children.

Got it.

Unfortunately for the two, focusing on the children means focusing on their business, which means the two are seeing quite a lot of each other in recent month.

Tarek opened up about continuing to work with his wife recently in an interview with Us Weekly, "It’s like anything. You have good days and bad days. It was a stressful time, but we had to do our job. Our job is to film a show and flip houses. But our most important job is to co-parent."

Sounds pretty normal to me.

George Clooney Has A Solid Fatherhood Strategy: Hide

There is just something about a man becoming a dad that makes him infinitely more attractive. Now, take George Clooney, who is already one of the most dashing men in the world, add in a conversation about having twins, and the result is ovary overload.

More: Is Amal Clooney Having George's Perfect Baby? Could It Be?

I know it's cliché, but the man is just downright swoonworthy. The first time I spot him holding babies with that stare that sees into your soul, and I am done for.

Which makes it all the more awesome that Clooney said in a new interview with French film host Laurent Weil that his strategy with his kids is to "lock yourself in a room."

Obviously Clooney was kidding. There is no way wifey Amal would let him get away with that.

But that doesn't mean Clooney isn't just a little bit nervous, "It's going to be an adventure," he said.

More: Yup, Amal and George Are Going All In With Twins

Adding that he and Amal have embraced the moment "with arms wide open."

It's a good thing too because soon there's going to be two little bundles of joy wrapped in those arms.

Clooney also admitted he knows he's no spring chicken. He'll be 56 when the babies are born this summer. But he comforts himself by knowing French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo was 70 when he had a baby with Nathalie Tardivel.

Plus, if Clooney's outer layer is any indication of his insides, he's definitely young at heart.

Kim Kardashian West Just Wants to Lose 7 pounds, You Guys

I genuinely love Kim Kardashian West. She is literal goals. Her life, her career and her family all make me swoon. So color me confused AF when I saw Kardashian West in a sweat suit on Snapchat during one of her early morning workouts. You OK, girl?

More: Kim Kardashian Has the Perfect (Naked) Response to Slut-Shamers (PHOTO)

During one of her early morning workouts, Kardashian West (ever the keen Snapchat user) didn't tarry a moment when it came to documenting her outfit. Well, it was a outfit in the sense that it covered her body and looked pretty cool, but I'm not sure Kardashian West would have been caught dead in it outside the gym. It was a sweat suit. No, not the cute kind that makes you look like Paris Hilton in 2004 or an Olympic gymnast in the 1980s. It looked like a black plastic garbage bag but #Fashionable. Gosh, it makes me break out into the sweats just looking at it.

In the Snapchat, Kardashian West documents the bemused reaction her trainer had to her choice of workout gear. "Don just called me Missy Elliott. Look it, I'm wearing a full sweat suit 'cause I gotta lose this extra, like 7 pounds." Excuse me? You need to lose 7 pounds? How? Why? I'm absolutely gobsmacked and I think it would be fair to say I'm not the only person who would feel that way when looking at Kardashian West.

Adele Shares Her Seven-Minute Ab Workout

$

We all know exercising is something we should do, but how many times does it get put to the side because we simply don’t want to do it. Not to mention how ridiculous we sometimes look when putting our body through those grueling workouts.

Thankfully, a few hilarious and very relatable pictures Adele shared on Instagram are giving all of us hope that sweating it out — scrunched up face and all — is definitely worth it.

More: Adele's Gym Picture Sums Up How We All Feel About Fitness Right Now

With the help of her trainer, Pete Geracimo, Adele is learning the benefits of a strong core, while learning how to Superman. The workout, featured in People's website, lays out the entire core program Adele goes through.

Building a strong core is essential when participating in any sport, activity or exercise program and that is why Geracimo loves to start his clients with what he calls the Seven Minutes in Heaven workout. His clients perform seven different plank moves, each held for a minute.

The beauty of this workout is that you can plank anywhere, any time. The plank is one of the best exercises for core conditioning, as it improves posture, supports a healthy back, enhances overall movement and coordination and, of course, tones your midsection. Here's Adele's seven-minute routine.

Minute 1: Classic hand plank hold

Start off on your hands with arms locked out and back straight (almost looks like a push-up position). Hold for one minute.

More: Why You Should Talk to Yourself During Your Workout

Minutes 2 & 3: Side planks

Go on one forearm and turn sideways. You can raise your arm up or put it on your hip. Raise your body off the floor and hold for one minute and then switch to the other side and hold for one minute.

Minute 4: Forearm plank

Similar to minute one, but instead of holding it on your hands, you are down on your forearms. Hold for one minute.

Minute 5: Table plank

Start by sitting on your butt, chest facing up and knees bent. Push your butt up with your forearms down on the ground (it looks like a table hold). Hold for one minute.

Minute 6: Dish plank

Lie on your back and lift your legs, arms and shoulders off the ground. Point your toes and hold your legs at about a 45-degree angle. Hold for one minute.

More: 10 Full-Body Exercises That Tone Everything in One Fell Swoop

Minute 7: Superman

Get in the classic plank pose and spread your legs apart. While holding this plank, extend one arm forward and simultaneously lift your opposite leg (if you extend your left arm, lift the right leg up). Hold this position for five seconds and repeat with other arm/leg.

Amber Tamblyn and David Cross Have Their Baby, Win Best Baby Announcement

For the record? We’d be totally down with hanging out with cool cats Amber Tamblyn and David Cross and their new little one.

The couple, married in 2012, just had a baby girl — and they pretty much rocked the announcement. Tamblyn posted a video of the newborn on Instagram with this caption:

“David and I are proud to announce the birth of our daughter, Dauphinoise Petunia Brittany Scheherazade Von Funkinstein Mustard Witch RBG Cross Tamblyn-Bey jr.”

More: Pregnant Amber Tamblyn's essay on motherhood is pretty damn good

We hoped they weren’t joking about her name, because Dauphinoise Petunia alone would win all the baby names of all time. But reps for Tamblyn and Cross hint that the baby girl has another name the couple is not yet releasing. Fine, then. Excuse us while we go adopt a cat and name it Von Funkinstein Mustard Witch.

Tamblyn first announced her pregnancy in an essay for Glamour in October 2016, where she discussed her passion for activism and women’s rights. "I've been thinking about motherhood a lot lately,” she wrote. “What it means to be one, what it means to have one, what it means to know one, what it means to make decisions as one and have conversations as one.”

We've always liked Tamblyn for her acting chops, but her activism has us even more impressed. On Jan. 21, a then very pregnant Tamblyn attended not one but two Women's Marches (where she took some cute selfies with Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-stars Blake Lively and America Ferrera, a posse we would also be happy to do regular bottomless mimosa brunches with).

More: Amber Tamblyn and America Ferrera are real-life BFFs

In truth, we were a little worried Tamblyn might go into labor at the Women's Marches, but Dauphinoise Petunia was clearly in no big rush to make her debut. And yes, we reserve the right to call her Dauphinoise Petunia for the rest of her natural life. They started it; we're going with it. Period.

Finally — Lipstick for Your Labia That Glues You Shut During Your Period

$
0
0

Menstruating people, rejoice — a male chiropractor in Kansas has solved all our pesky period problems with one handy product.

Naturally, it’s called “Mensez,” an appropriate name for something designed for women by a man who has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about. (And conveniently, also sounds like “menses.” Get it?)

More: Meet the Future of Egg Freezing

Word of this revolutionary product spread quickly after Facebook user Thea Butler screen-grabbed and shared the Mensez advertisement, which describes itself as “a natural combination of amino acids and oil in a lipstick applicator that is applied to the lips downunder [sic] during the period.”

Mensez bills itself as lipstick for your labia because that sounds cute and women like pretty, girly things like lipstick, and calling it “super vag sealer” might be off-putting. In reality, you’re supposed to use it to glue your labia together during your period so you stop leaking blood like poorly wrapped fresh meat in the bottom of a paper grocery bag.

More: Oklahoma Lawmaker: Women Are "Hosts" and Need Permission for Abortion

This raises the question of whether its creator, Dr. Daniel Dopps, is even aware of what lipstick does when applied to actual face lips: Does he think it’s something invented to glue women’s mouths shut?

So how does this life-changing invention work? Facebook ad, tell me more!

"[Mensez] causes [the labia] to stick together, strong enough to prevent leakage that is until the user urinates. The urine instantly unsticks the labia and allows everything to wash out into the toilet, wipe and reapply Mensez lipstick."

Using this logic, it’s clear that Dopps thinks that urine and period blood come out of the same hole. They do not. He is also under the assumption that this magical labia lipstick is strong enough to seal in thick period blood and related menstrual discharge, but disappears at the first sign of urine.

More: Our Bodies, Ourselves Takes On International Surrogacy

As it turns out, Dopps does actually have a patent for Mensez, filed in 2011 and secured on Jan. 10, 2017. But as vagina-quackery-debunker extraordinaire Dr. Jen Gunter, an actual OB-GYN, wrote on her blog, menstrual products in the United States require FDA approval, so you won’t see it on the shelves of your local CVS any time soon.

Gunter also rightfully points out that “if this guy has truly invented safe, reversible, non toxic skin glue strong enough to hold the labia together for 8 hours that only dissolves with urine and not blood then it would have many applications in wound care and the operating room and Pharma or the military would be fighting over it.”

In case it wasn’t clear, definitely do not glue your labia together during your period or any other time, no matter what an unqualified old white dude in Kanas tells you.

Alyssa Milano Calls Out Post-Baby Body Expectations

Alyssa Milano, we like you.

Not only is she adorably hard-core crushing on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau like the rest of us (have you seen him doing the planking thing on his desk yet?) but she’s had it with postpartum body expectations.

Milano — mom to Milo, 5, and Elizabella, 2 — is not digging the Hollywood pressure for actresses to drop post-baby weight.

Milano told People that motherhood opened her eyes to how ridiculous the focus on the post-baby body really is. “It’s really an awakening — when you get pregnant and have a child — that the female body is the most amazing machine imaginable,” Milano said. Damn straight!

Milano freely admits that the pressure to lose weight was completely "self-inflicted," which is pretty understandable for a Project Runway All Stars host hanging out with a slew of fashion models the size of Italian greyhounds.

More: Alyssa Milano might be the perfect spokesperson for the Atkins lifestyle

"I just know, for me, that's just not in my make-up, biologically. There is no way I could have dropped all the baby weight in two weeks, I don't know how they do it!" said Milano. We don't either. But it's nice to hear a celebrity calling out the craziness of such expectations.

And the idea of returning to a "pre-pregnancy" weight is not something Milano's buying into — even though she's quite open about her low-carb, high-protein Atkins lifestyle (she's a spokesperson for Atkins Nutritionals — yeah, lettuce-wrapped bacon cheeseburgers — that Atkins).

"There are so many variables, you don't know what a goal weight is especially when you're 43 and you just had a baby, I don't know if I'm going to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight," Milano said. "I'm breastfeeding also, it's a big part of it, and so, I just call it my happy weight."

More: Wendy Williams messed with the wrong nursing mom — Alyssa Milano

Three cheers for happy weight, not should-be numbers on a scale. Of course, all that Atkins-lifestyle food and perks probably don't hurt — they likely keep you from diving headfirst into a family-size bag of Cool Ranch Doritos. But we appreciate your message anyway.

Can Your Birth Control Pill Help You Fight Iron Deficiency?

$

“Sorry, you’ve been rejected because your iron levels are too low.”

That was the feedback I heard after waiting two hours for my turn to donate plasma at my local blood/plasma donation. “Are you on your period?” the intake technician asked.

I wasn’t, but immediately suspected my near-vegetarian diet to be the culprit in my lost opportunity and newfound deficiency. I left feeling annoyed and wondering if I should stop for a cheeseburger.

More: We're One Step Closer to Getting Birth Control Pills Without a Prescription

A few weeks later, I had the opportunity to mention this to my OB-GYN. She wasn’t surprised and said that regular periods are often a cause or catalyst for iron-deficient anemia. In fact, 1 in 5 women of childbearing age has IDA, which makes sense when you consider that the average amount of blood lost during each menstrual cycle is 30 to 40 milliliters. Women considered to have heavy bleeding can even lose up to 80 milliliters or more.

IDA usually develops over time when you don’t have enough iron to make healthy red blood cells, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Its symptoms vary from person to person and by severity, but some of the more common symptoms are extreme fatigue (another personal red flag), shortness of breath, headache, pale skin, cold hands and feet and chest pain.

More: How Birth Control May Be Affecting Your Sleep

For some women, that’s where oral birth control pills can come in. Not only does an oral contraceptive help a multitude of conditions and minimize blood loss — which can be a key component of preventing anemia — but some formulas also contain ferrous fumarate (iron).

Birth control is often prescribed to control IDA because it treats the underlying cause of the anemia (in cases where periods are to blame). However, menstruation may not be the only cause, so it’s still important to check with your doctor before loading up on supplements or switching to a pill that offers iron pills.

More: The Birth Control Method That Might Just Save Your Life

If you’ve ever Googled “which birth control pill is best” and read through all the results, you’ve likely seen several that have “Fe” (the periodic chart code for iron) in the name. These are the brands that add about 75 milligrams of ferrous fumarate or other iron supplements to the reminder (or inactive) pills. The idea is that these added iron supplements help replenish what is lost during each cycle. With studies citing a decrease of up to 60 percent in blood loss and number of bleeding days, it’s well worth a shot when you consider what a shorter, lighter period could do to your iron levels — especially in combination with the added iron boost.

Hold up, though! Before you start Googling and hunting around the internet for this alleged new tape, hear what her representative had to say to DailyMail.com.

“It's not new – it's the same old tape,” said Kardashian’s rep.

So Kardashian is doing her best to bury the sex tape story again, even though it’s the reason she became a reality star and business mogul. It’s not something she wants to embrace because she’s worked hard to create her empire after the sex tape was released without her consent in 2007.

Will her detractors ever let her forget that she filmed her private moments with her boyfriend? Probably not.

She admitted to Love Magazine in February 2015, “If I do have one regret in life, that’s it.”

However, she doesn't want to be judged on her mistake forever.

"That was 12 years ago, no 13 years ago, so I just try to move on and put it in the past because I think everyone in life does things that they're not proud of but you can't sit and dwell on them forever," she said in the interview.

Kardashian clearly wants to set a better example for her children, especially her daughter, North. However, she walks a fine line between her sex tape and showing off her fit figure in nudes on Instagram. Some haters can’t see the difference between the two.

For now, put away your laptop and know that there isn’t a second sex tape, it’s only the one we’ve already seen.

Kids Socialize Virtually — and Spend Too Much Time Alone

Instead of hanging out after school at each other’s houses or talking on the phone, kids are now getting their social fix from live video chat. And while a lot of this new technology connects them virtually, it is also contributing to the growing number of kids and teens who are spending more time alone and disconnected from in-person contact.

Generation Z, as they're called, is the generation born after the millennials, with the oldest members barely out of high school. For these teens and young adults, cellphones are an extension of their bodies. So it’s no wonder that apps like Houseparty, which allow kids to connect with up to seven other people at once in a live video chat, is changing the definition of “chilling out” for Generation Z.

More: Are parents of tweens and teens massive hypocrites when it comes to screen time?

So how do these apps work? Well, according to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, when kids first open the Houseparty app, they may be chatting with just one friend, but everyone they’re connected to on Houseparty gets a push alert that they’re “in the house,” and soon enough, the room fills up. It might even spill over into other rooms, growing organically just like a real house party.

From a business and technology standpoint, these apps make sense and are hugely successful. But when you start looking at the health consequences of kids hanging out with friends online vs. in person — both physical and emotional/mental health — you quickly start to see the drawbacks.

More: Dad texts daughter reasons he loves her mom, we all swoon

Many experts cite too much time indoors and lack of physical activity as a huge drawback to all of this technology. And then there’s this: Especially for adolescents and young adults, there are significant emotional risks associated with social media platforms, a new study reports. According to research from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the more time young adults use social media, the more likely they are to be depressed.

Yet those immersed in the world of tech say these apps allow kids to have more access to each other — and that’s more important than ever with so many kids’ schedules not allowing them any social time. And kids will tell you they are much more likely to turn off the TV or movies online and instead opt for hanging out and connecting with friends via live video.

So who’s got the right answer? I’m not sure if we will ever have a definitive answer to that question, but as parents, we should continue to ensure that our kids have more "in-person" human contact than they do with technology — and, as ever, pay attention to the effects on our kids as they virtually connect to each other.

No, Savannah Guthrie Isn't Giving up Her Today Show Seat to Megyn Kelly

Update: Feb. 22, 2017, 10 a.m. PT: Following rumors that Megyn Kelly's NBC contract would push Savannah Guthrie off the Today show, Guthrie announced on Twitter her return date: March 3.

By the looks of it, Guthrie's job at the Today show is safe. She signed a long-term contract with the show before going on maternity leave.

Update: Feb. 3, 2017, 12:30 p.m. PT: Rumors are flying once again that Savannah Guthrie's job is in danger.

Sources are telling Page Six that Guthrie, who currently co-hosts the 7 a.m. hour of the Today show alongside Matt Lauer, is likely to get bumped to the 9 a.m. slot, taking over for Tamron Hall and Al Roker and opening up a spot in the coveted 7 a.m. hour for newcomer Megyn Kelly.

"NBC is not paying Megyn $12 to $15 million a year to be on at 9 a.m. The word is that Savannah could take the 9 a.m. slot and Megyn will go right in at 7 a.m. Andy Lack is completely behind all of this," a source said. "There’s no way Megyn would have signed with NBC unless she was promised a big role down the line."

Another insider added, "If you’re Savannah, you’re looking over your shoulder every minute. The first time Savannah is out, Megyn will fill in, sitting next to Matt Lauer, and NBC will go to great lengths to capitalize on it. It doesn’t make sense to pay Megyn that kind of money unless she’s on at 7 a.m."

Update: Jan. 27, 2017, 1 p.m. PT: It's official: Megyn Kelly won't be replacing Savannah Guthrie, but she is edging Al Roker and Tamron Hall out of their hosting hour on the Today show.

Reports say Kelly has her pick of either the 9 a.m. slot, which Roker and Hall are currently hosting, or the 10 a.m. slot, which is hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, who will be moved to 9 a.m. if Kelly takes over their time slot.

Insiders say Roker and Hall will both stay at NBC, but what that will look like remains unclear. Kelly will likely host her hour of Today solo.

Kelly is still under contract with Fox even though she's left the network, so she won't start appearing on NBC until sometime in the fall or even later.

"She is still under contract at Fox until July, then she has a six-month non-compete [clause]," an insider told People magazine. "Fox might let her out of the non-compete, but they might not. There is so much that has to still be arranged."

The announcement that Roker and Hall are losing their hour came one day after they both celebrated their hour's success on Twitter.

Update, Jan. 6, 11 a.m. PT: Rumors are flying about Megyn Kelly's move to NBC — most recently that network execs have some big plans for her to edge Savannah Guthrie out of the Today show.

Page Six reports that multiple sources have confirmed that the talk at the network says Kelly is headed for Today.

"There is a rumor on set that Megyn would eventually get the lead anchor role on Today, pushing Savannah out," an insider told the site.

But another source told the site that "the 9 a.m. hour of Today is likely not her goal. She is angling for something else."

And a high-level exec at NBC brought up the 5-year contract that Guthrie just signed.

"We just signed Savannah to a massive deal that is longer than Megyn’s," the source said. "A lead anchor role at Today isn’t part of the conversation for Megyn. The goal was simply to get someone of Megyn’s talent and caliber through the door at NBC. We have not made a decision on her daytime slot. It is being discussed."

A Today show rep also denied the rumor, saying that Guthrie has a long future with the show.

"No, Megyn is not being ‘groomed;' the senior leadership of NBC News expects to be long retired and sleeping in while Savannah is still rising early and anchoring Today," the rep said.

Reports say Kelly turned down a $20 million-a-year offer from Fox in order to take a gig at NBC, where she'll have a Sunday night show, a daily news program and a place in the network's political coverage.

Kelly will stay at Fox through this week, continuing to host her show, The Kelly File. Her last day at Fox will be Friday, although she won't start at NBC until July because of her ongoing contract.

Fox CEO and Chairman Rupert Murdoch released a statement after news broke of Kelly's move, writing, "We hope she enjoys tremendous success in her career and wish her and her family all the best."

Kelly also released a statement of her own on Facebook, thanking her soon-to-be former employer for the opportunities it gave her.

"While I will greatly miss my colleagues at Fox, I am delighted to be joining the NBC News family and taking on a new challenge," she wrote. "I remain deeply grateful to Fox News, to Rupert, Lachlan and James Murdoch, and especially to all of the FNC viewers, who have taught me so much about what really matters."

Kelly was at Fox for 12 years. It hasn't been released how much she'll be paid at NBC after she turned down the $20 million offer from Fox, where The Kelly File is the second highest-rated cable news show in total viewers. ABC and CNN were reportedly also chasing Kelly, but the Daily Mail reports that they couldn't compete with the offer from Fox, putting them out of the running.

George Clooney Will Speak About Politics Any Time He Damn Well Pleases

George Clooney had some choice words for anyone who thinks that so-called "Hollywood elites" should stick to entertainment and stay out of politics. In an interview for French program Rencontres de Cinema, the Oscar-winning actor explained that anyone who doesn't like those in the entertainment business to speak up should realize that both President Donald Trump and White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon are Hollywood elitists too.

After some friendly opening remarks, Clooney continued the conversation by pointing out that Meryl Streep, who gave a political statement at the Golden Globe awards in January, is no more a Hollywood elitist than some of those in the new administration.

"This is the part that makes me a little crazy," said Clooney. "When Meryl spoke, everyone on that one side was like, ‘Well, Hollywood elitist Hollywood speaking’. Donald Trump has 22 acting credits. He collects $120,000 a year from a Screen Actor’s Guild pension fund. He is a Hollywood elitist."

Trump isn't the only one in the new administration who is making money off of entertainment: "Steve Bannon is a failed film writer and director. That’s the truth, that’s what he’s done," said Clooney. "He wrote a Shakespearean rap musical about the LA riots that he couldn’t get made, you know, which is a shock. He made a lot of money off Seinfeld. He’s elitist. Hollywood. That’s the reality if you want to look at it that way."

He went on to say: "When people say Meryl shouldn’t speak up — of course she should. She has every right to speak up. She’s an American citizen, and she was an American citizen a long time before she was an icon."

Also during the interview, Clooney called Trump a demagogue, but voiced his belief that Americans will fix the problem that it has created for itself in the White House.

More: Yup, Amal and George Are Going All In With Twins

This isn't the first time Clooney has criticized Trump — or the first time he has come to the defense of Streep, with whom he co-starred in Fantastic Mr. Fox. Shortly after Streep's protest speech, Trump tweeted that Streep was "one of the most over-rated actresses." In response, Clooney asked the president, during an interview with People, "Shouldn't you be running the country?"

Clooney supported Hillary Clinton during the election. He spent the rest of his interview discussing a number of other topics, including a look back at his career and how he is feeling about the upcoming birth of his twins with his wife, barrister Amal Clooney. He's currently directing a crime comedy, Suburbicon, which is written by the Coen Brothers and stars Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Josh Brolin and Oscar Isaac.

Mom Sends College Son a Care Package He'll Never Forget

You knew they were out there. The everyday heroes living among us. And mom Terri Cox is one of them.

Cox recently sent her Westminster College freshman son a care package. But wait. As her 18-year-old son Connor eagerly dug into the box, did he find his usual Pringles and protein bars?

Nope.

This mom sent her son trash. Oh yes she did. Tissues, soda cans, old bags, dryer sheets and fast food containers.

Her confused son called his mom to find out what the heck was going on. Turns out, his mom sent him all the trash from his room from when he was home during Christmas vacation. Instead of cleaning it up as he promised, he just left it and went back to school. Well, his mom took care of that.

More: I'm never going to top the pregnancy prank I pulled on my husband

He even posted the photo on Twitter of his trash care package.

Apparently, Connor's mom wanted to send the message that she is not his maid. Message sent.

Connor's friends reportedly thought his mom was a "savage" for coming up with the idea. To me, she's a superhero. Yes, we all threaten ridiculous things like, "If you don't clean up your room, I'm throwing out all your toys!" It hasn't happened yet in my house.

And for months, I've been telling my children that if they don't pick up their garbage in the car, I will put it into their beds while they're sleeping. Have I done it? No. Have they stopped leaving their garbage in the car? No. Am I thinking about leaving it in their beds now? Possibly.

We all need to get a little more savage, a little more like mom Terri Cox. Because I bet her son Connor never forgets to take out the garbage again.

Is Meghan Markle Leaving Her Acting Career Behind for Prince Harry?

$

As you might guess, royal families are pretty old-school, and marrying into one often means taking on a full-time job as royalty and leaving your career behind. But if you were a feminist, activist and famous actress, would you give it all up to be with Prince Charming?

That might be the big question running through Meghan Markle's head as her relationship with Prince Harry continues to blossom. According to the Daily Star, the popular paralegal from the legal drama Suits is considering leaving the show after its seventh season in order to hop the pond and be with her new beau without all the long-distance hassle. Rumor has it that Markle has asked to be written out of the show's next season, giving her the opportunity to try living in London.

More: Meghan Markle Shares Self-Love Manifesto While Visiting Kensington Palace

Things have been moving fast for the couple. They began dating early in the fall of 2016 and officially announced their relationship in November. Shortly after, Kensington Palace issued a stern statement asking the media to stop harassing Markle and her family. Markle has recently been spotted in London, while Prince Harry will be spending a significant amount of time in Toronto (where Suits is filmed) this fall because of the Invictus Games for injured servicemen, which he created in 2014.

While it seems plausible that Markle could wave farewell to her tenure on Suits, it seems less likely that the actress would put all else aside for a relationship, even one with one of the most eligible bachelors on the planet.

First and foremost, Markle has a long history of loving to work and of working hard. She made ends meet as a freelance calligrapher while she was breaking into acting, and her schedule is currently filled with guest spots, cameos and movie appearances. In addition, Markle also runs a lifestyle website, The Tig, where she often posts about her thoughts on everything from beauty to travel. She recently wrote in one post: "I've never wanted to be a lady who lunches — I've always wanted to be a woman who works."

Secondly, although Markle might leave her current acting gig, it seems unlikely she will start living the easy life covered in royal jewels because she is a long-time outspoken feminist and activist. Not only is she a United Nations advocate for women’s leadership and political participation, she is also the global ambassador for World Vision Canada. She has traveled the world fighting for women's equality and clean water, and she seems to be extremely passionate about what she does.

Of course, while most women who marry royalty have given up their careers to be full-time princesses, all have continued to work on humanitarian causes. Maybe if things work out with Prince Harry, Markle will simply put the acting portion of her career aside and shift her focus to advocacy and social justice.

We'll have to wait and see, though — everyone knows that sometimes moving closer to your long-distance lover heats things up and sometimes it cools things off.

Law & Order: SVU Just Made a Very Important Point About Women in the Military

$
0
0

One thing you can always count on with Law & Order: SVU is that the show will tackle topics ripped straight from the headlines, and they'll manage to present them in a way that is both original and on point. Such was the case with this week's episode, "No Surrender."

More: SVU's Latest Episode Could Very Well Save Victims IRL

The episode started with a group of what appeared to be senior level military personnel briefing a young female ranger and decorated war hero on a new public relations campaign centered around her. The woman, Beth, was being dubbed "Army 2.0" — she was to be the face of the new order of the military... one in which everyone has parity regardless of gender.

But before embarking on a cross-country press tour, Beth headed home to celebrate with family and friends. Only, in the wee hours of the following morning, a jogger finds her bleeding and brutalized in a local park.

On the surface, it seems as though Beth's attack (and the episode in general) could be pointing to resistance women in the military face from men who believe they have no place there.

Following this line of thought, the detectives find a man in online forums who continually makes menacing comments about Beth. As they try to track him down, they pursue other potential suspects as well. It is in doing so they discover Beth has been taking part in an underground fight club to win money to pay for medical treatment for her mom.

When they discover Gary was actually at Beth's fight that night, detectives turn the heat up on him. He admits he followed Beth a bit, but only to offer her a handshake for a good fight.

More: SVU Will Reunite Mariska Hargitay with a Former Flame This Season

Beth's ID's him as her attacker, which obviously contradicts his story. Then, in a twist, the detectives find video footage that does corroborate Gary's story. So what does this mean for Beth? Was she lying?

Yes and no. It's possible Beth really didn't remember what her attacker's face looked like at first, and she simply assumed it was the creeper who'd been following her around. And, as we learn later in the episode, she wanted to handle the situation herself since the attacker turned out to be fiance.

Or ex-fiance, as it were — she broke it off with him after her welcome home party, which was the provocation he needed to feel justified in attacking her.

After all of this comes to light, though, Beth still doesn't want her name to be used at her fiance's arraignment. She doesn't want the story to break, because she is afraid it will lead people to believe she is weak. Of course, our girl Olivia gives her the kind of pep talk she needs to see the light by reminding Beth that "Rangers always lead the way."

Ultimately, Beth holds a press conference and publicly announces herself as the rape victim in the case. She then goes on to explain her sole mission in doing so is to encourage other sexual assault survivors to come forward as well, saying, "There is only honor in surviving."

More: SVU's 400th Episode Is Further Proof Mariska Hargitay Is Everyone's Hero

Why is this such an important episode? Because it speaks straight to the heart of an issue that is very real and very current. Women have more rights and parity in the military than ever before by law, but they are often still seen as weak or inferior.

It's easy to see how trying to outrun this perception could make a female soldier feel like she couldn't come forward about sexual assault. The more women like Beth share their stories, the more readily apparent it will be that women in the military being assaulted is not a sign of weakness on their part —but, rather, evidence of the inherent weakness in the men who prey on them.

The Lisa Marie Presley Divorce Saga Just Keeps Getting Weirder

Picture this: Lisa Marie Presley finds hundred inappropriate images of children on her husband Michael Lockwood's computer and promptly files for divorce — as any sane person would do. Now, as a sane person (assuming Presley is, indeed, sane), Presley assumes the courts will support her in this decision. After all, she did reportedly turn over evidence that proves Lockwood is a total creeper.

More: Lisa Marie Presley’s Divorce Could Expose Scary Details From Her Marriage

So then how in the heck does it make sense that a judge would order Presley to pay $50,000 of her husband's legal fees over the next five months until the courts can figure out this madness and separate facts from fiction?

I guess, first of all, Presley is the breadwinner in the relationship thanks to her daddy Elvis Presley and her fat inheritance check each month. The courts have yet to decide how the couple's money should be divided so, in that sense, I suppose it makes sense that Presley would front her husband's bills, since he's, well, broke as shit without her and doesn't have a job.

Yet, Presley claims she's also broke. Because that $100,000 she gets each month from her daddy's estate just doesn't cover her bills. Apparently. Oh to be rich... Anyways, she said she uses most of the money for her kids. She has twins with Lockwood and two other children from her previous marriage to Danny Keough.

More: Lisa Marie Presley's Divorce Was So Messy, It Reportedly Drove Her to Rehab

Now, the second thing to consider is that Lockwood says Presley claims of him possessing inappropriate images of children are unfounded. He said he was "disgusted" by the accusations, according to E! News. That would be quite the lie for Presley to make up, but if she did just that then sure, yes, Lockwood should be entitled to recompense.

The police clearly found something inappropriate though because upon investigation, the couple's two children were promptly taken from the household and have been with their grandmother ever since.

A separate trial on the allegations against Lockwood is set to take place in March so don't you worry. The truth will come out soon.
