Everyone has an opinion on Hiddleswift, including Taylor Swift's BFFs

Everyone knows that Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston are together (really, they've made no attempt to hide their affection for one another), and everyone also has an opinion on their romance. But what do Swift's fans think of her new man?

More: Wow, Taylor Swift & Tom Hiddleston are already throwing around the "L" word

On Monday, July 4, Swift, Hiddleston and her famous squad partied it up at her Rhode Island home and it was a great opportunity for them to really get to know each other — and Hiddleston made a pretty good impression.

"Tom has met all of Taylor's best friends at this point in their relationship," an insider told E! News.

Adding, "They all really like Tom and like how he treats Taylor. Things are moving fast between them but none of her friends are worried because they never have seen her this happy."

More: Y'all are crazy — Selena Gomez would never date Calvin Harris

Swift's relationships are often discussed and she gets a lot of flack from some critics for having dated a string of famous men (and producing songs about their breakups), but Swift appears to wear her heart on her sleeve and she's open to giving love a shot. And it looks like it's really paid off this time around, because according to the source, both Swift and Hiddleston feel like they've got a "rare" connection.

And not only have her friends given their stamp of approval, but also her family.

Could this be the romance that ends in a happily ever after for Swift? Maybe.

Teen Mom's Mackenzie Douthit pulls gender reveal surprise on her kids

With cupcakes and a silly surprise, Teen Mom couple Mackenzie Douthit McKee and Josh McKee recently revealed the gender of their third child.

More: These maternity photos got so much cuter when the family dog showed up

The couple already has a son, Gannon, 4, and a daughter, Jaxie, 2, so there was plenty of anticipation in learning which way the scale would tip, especially as Mackenzie stresses this will be their last child. In a video, you see Josh and the kids sitting at a table outside with a plate of cupcakes. The filling — blue for a boy or pink for a girl — would reveal whether there will be a little brother or little sister.

More: Emily Blunt and John Krasinski finally spill their baby news

When they bite in and see the blue center, that's not the only big surprise.

Mackenzie douthit gender reveal

What's more fun than a surprise silly string attack? Not much. They had no idea that was coming but clearly loved it.

Sweet little gender reveal touches like this make announcing the big news even more fun, which is really always good news no matter what it is. Because even though everyone may have their wishes for which gender they hope to see revealed, once that child enters their lives they'll never be able to imagine that it could have been any other way.

Hold up, people really want Jesse Williams fired because of his BET speech

Stacy Dash isn't the only one who hated Jesse Williams' BET speech, as this new petition on Change.org proves.

More: Don't just watch Jesse Williams' BET Awards speech — read it

The petition, which calls to fire Williams from ABC's hit show Grey's Anatomy for his "racist rant" has already gathered 4834 signatures, with a goal of 5,000.

The petition is asking the broadcaster to fire Williams for his "racist, hate speech against law enforcement and white people at the BET awards" and has compared Williams' speech to the inappropriate homophobic slur from Isaiah Washington — who starred as Preston Burke — resulting in him swiftly being fired from the show, yet there have been no consequences yet for Williams.

"Why the one-way street? Why the support for a hater? Why the hypocrisy? #AllLivesMatter All humans bleed the same color. #EqualConsequences4RacistBehavior," the petition states.

The petition also has a note which states that it isn't politically motivated, and focuses on "equal consequences for racist behavior." Adding, "If this was an Asian, Mexican, Caucasian or whoever saying the same exact words as Jesse Williams did, I would be against it and petitioned them to be fired if they did not suffer the same consequences as others have suffered for their irrational behavior."

But if you think that this petition holds any weight with the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, you'd be so wrong because she took to Twitter in defense of Williams.

Williams also took to Twitter to share a message about not promoting "empty people and their tantrums."

Parents flipped when they found out Hooters sponsored kids' camp

$

Ah, the Boy Scouts. A sacred institution where boys have gone for decades to learn how to start fires, tie nautical knots and fold the American flag. For years parents have been sending their boys off to Scouts in the hope that they'll come back with lifelong values, leadership qualities and some excellent swag from America's favorite breastaurant, Hooters.

Well, maybe that's not what parents send their sons to Boy Scouts for, but that's just too bad for a group of Denver parents, because sometimes life throws you a surprise. Like when your 7-year-old Cub Scout comes home with a Hooters hat and tales of the nice Hooters ladies who volunteered at camp that day. Surprise!

More: 19 DIYs every mom should have in her arsenal

Now, there's a reason the Hooters gals were with the kids at camp, and that reason is that someone thought it would be a very good idea to have the restaurant sponsor the camp. There truly is no match better made than "Boy Scout," often used colloquially to describe boys so upright that butter wouldn't melt in their mouth, and "Hooters," a slang term for boobies.

The restaurant provided funding for the camp, plus three employers to volunteer at the camp itself, and apparently some Hooters-branded gear, because that's kind of the point of sponsoring something. That made some parents pretty mad, and they got madder when a few pictures of their boys posing with the volunteers went up on the franchise's Facebook page, which we get. Those photos have since been removed.

According to a local news outlet, a district executive was initially unapologetic about the sponsor choice, but since then, a spokesperson for the Denver chapter of the Boy Scouts of America has issued an apology for what they termed "a mistake."

More: Comic book baby names for girls with a serious pow factor

We totally get the parental reaction here, which is, "Ew, Hooters," because Hooters is gross and tacky and makes all of its money off of what they themselves once termed "female sex appeal" in the handbook they gave to employees. When you think of Hooters, scouting is probably very low on the list of things you associate with the restaurant, as opposed to "my one creepy uncle" and "gathering place for people too young to get into a strip club." Even their wings suck.

Still, even if you think of Hooters in a slightly more charitable light, there's just no getting around the fact that it's an inappropriate sponsor choice for a kids' day camp. Sorry, but that's the image they wanted: adult fun.

However.

More: Sharing cute photos of my kids' naked butts comes at too high a price

Can you imagine being one of the servers from this particular Hooters who suddenly finds herself the object of panicked moralizing and outright fury from parents? In the controversial pictures, the women are decked out head to toe in Hooters clothing, but it's tamer than tapioca pudding — comfy shirt, track jacket, visor. No hot pants and definitely no skintight tees.

These women are volunteers, which means they took time from the high-earning world of waiting tables to be a part of their community, and they did it for free. If they were from, say, La Madeleine, they would have at least gotten a thank-you for their trouble. Instead they are at the center of a parental rage storm, and that stinks for them, and it kind of stinks for the Boy Scouts too.

Not just because they won't be able to return to the Hooters well next year when it's time to raise funds, but because they missed an opportunity to learn a very Scout-like lesson. We're fond of telling kids to not judge a book by its cover. We don't want them to miss out on something good because it comes in a package that's otherwise distasteful.

Don't we especially want them to know that about people? That whether someone's wearing day-glo booty shorts or a three-piece suit, they're deserving of our respect? These women weren't there to entice the boys to come buy pitchers of crappy beer or to ogle chests. They were there to help out, but when people draw back in disgust, what do we think the boys involved will learn from that?

It's fine to disapprove of the bad judgment of Scout leadership in this case, but that can be done without treating the people who were nice enough to lend some kids a helping hand like untouchable pariahs.

Khloé Kardashian's reaction to Blac Chyna's pregnancy news will break your heart

Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna's baby news is old news by now, but it was only Sunday that we were given the privilege of seeing exactly how Kim, Kourtney and Khloé reacted to their little brother's announcement.

More: My daughter's birth wasn't planned, and she's OK with that

The latest episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians showed Rob having a face-to-face conversation with his three older sisters to discuss his engagement to Blac Chyna while they were on a skiing holiday. It didn't begin well, with Khloé telling the camera that she felt really uncomfortable and didn't want to be left alone with Rob — and this was before he dropped his pregnancy bombshell.

While Kim and Kourtney appeared to be happy for Rob, Khloé was clearly upset. "I don't know my emotions right now. I am empty... I am internally sad," she said to the camera.

More: Emily Blunt and John Krasinski finally spill their baby news

Khloé has faced a bit of backlash for her response to what most people would think of as the happiest of news. But let's give her a break. It's no secret that she's struggled with infertility.

Rob and Chyna's baby will be the sixth child born to one of Khloé's siblings — it can't be easy watching everyone else in the family have kids when it hasn't happened for you.

It's a difficult situation. Nobody should have to hide their pregnancy joy, but sometimes there has to be an element of walking on eggshells. Given Khloé's past experiences, it might have been more considerate of Rob to give her the news off camera, before he broke it to the rest of the family.

While every situation (and sibling relationship) is different and comes with its own complications — whether you're a Kardashian or not — bearing in mind a few things when telling a sister with a history of fertility problems that you're having a baby can make the process easier for everyone involved. For starters, a heartfelt personal message before a big public announcement will soften the blow. Recognizing — and accepting, without question — the fact that it might be difficult news to hear is also important.

More: Hands off Ellie Kemper's baby bump, m'kay?

Hopefully one day Khloé will be the one sharing her pregnancy news with her siblings (and the world). In the meantime, let's remember that just because her initial reaction to Rob and Chyna's news wasn't to jump for joy, it doesn’t mean she’s not happy for them or won’t be a good aunt — just like she has been to her other nieces and nephews.

6 things no one tells you about your skin as you age

$

I used to believe that my skin would never change and always stay as tight, ageless and flawless as it was in my younger years. I never imagined that someday I would be trying every product on the market to help my skin stay looking young. I grew up, reality set in and I realized that aging is inevitable. I can't rewrite history or take back all those days I spent in the sun, but I can make choices today that will help slow and reverse the effects of aging on my skin.

Lunch Pails and Lipstick
Image: Lunch Pails and Lipstick

1. You're never too young to start a great anti-aging skincare routine. In fact, right now is the perfect time to instill good habits and find products you like. Test out different moisturizers, serums and creams until you find a combo that works for you. You won't know the fantastic results that a serum can provide until you give one a try. Serums have a high concentration of active ingredients and are designed to deliver the product deeper into the skin for maximum anti-aging benefits. Find a quality serum that works now and you will thank yourself years later.

2. Anti-aging products don't have to be expensive. I used to think that the more expensive, the better the quality. This is so far from the truth. You can find affordable products that will change your skin if you know what to look for. I recommend No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Serum to everyone. You can grab it the next time you are in Target for less than $30. This serum is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles in just four weeks, and the results continue to get better over time. Don't let your budget keep you from taking care of your skin.

Lunch Pails and Lipstick2
Image: Lunch Pails and Lipstick

Lunch Pails and Lipstick3
Image: Lunch Pails and Lipstick3

3. Add a serum to your moisturizing routine. A moisturizers' main job is to hydrate and protect the skin by acting as a barrier on the surface of the skin. Serums are applied under a moisturizer, and although they can provide some hydration benefits, the primary function of a serum is to combat aging. They should not replace a moisturizer, but they can deliver spectacular anti-aging results.

4. Protecting your skin from the sun doesn't have to be a hassle. When I was younger, I complained about how thick sunscreen was. I didn't love how it left a white film on my face and hated having to use it. Little did I know, sunscreen doesn't have to be thick, white and tough to apply. Sunscreen is included in a number of beauty products these days. Look for a tinted moisturizer with SPF included to speed up your morning routine and protect your skin.

5. In retinol we trust! You don't need retinol every night, but applying it a couple times a week will help combat aging. It's easy to use and does magical things for skin. It brightens, reduces discoloration and even helps treat acne. It's my anti-aging secret weapon of choice and I like that No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Serum contains retinol.

6. Eye cream is not just for old women. Start using an eye cream when you're young and your older-self will thank you for it. The skin around our eyes dries out as we age and often makes us look older than we are. Luckily, applying a moisturizing eye cream can fight off the drying process and keep skin looking younger.

The best way to spoil your kitties — keep them healthy

$
0
0

Like any proud cat owner, the health and safety of your kitty is extremely important to you. No matter the age of your cat, there are always things you can do to improve the quality and length of its life — and make your own life easier by avoiding unnecessary vet bills and heartache.

More: Why I'm obsessed with my dog's stinky breath

To make sure your four-legged friend lives all nine of its lives, follow these five simple tips.

1. Proper nutrition and hydration

While this seems like common sense, many cat owners don't understand the basic dietary and hydration needs of their feline friends. Many cat-lovers feed their cat inexpensive, dry food, which can be very unhealthy.

The natural feline diet contains an estimated 72-78 percent moisture content, while dry food can have a moisture content of as low as 6 percent. Cats can become dehydrated very easily and often won't drink enough water even if they are thirsty. This leads to kidney problems.

Many cat foods also contain mainly soy protein, which is harder for felines to digest, as well as grains that cats would never naturally eat. Consider buying a quality wet food that has real meat listed as its main ingredient, or take the leap and make your own. Also encourage your cat to drink more water by providing a drinking fountain instead of a bowl — cats are instinctually much more likely to drink from a flowing water source.

2. Regular health checkups

It's important to take your cat to the vet for regular vaccinations and routine dental and physical exams, especially if it spends time outdoors and could potentially come into contact with unhealthy animals.

While it can be expensive to take a trip to the vet, it's always better to practice prevention. If your cat's health is a priority for you, it makes sense to look into pet insurance, which covers this type of preventative health care for your animals. Exams, vaccinations and emergency care are usually discounted with this type of medical plan, and you pay an affordable monthly fee.

Besides preventative healthcare, make sure you pay attention to your cat's behavior and take note of any sudden changes or irregular behavior. Cats are creatures of habit, and even a seemingly small change in appetite, defecation, urination or activity level can indicate a much more serious problem.

3. Watch their weight

In the United States, vets estimate that over 50 percent of cats are obese. Overweight cats suffer from many of the same health risks as overweight humans, including diabetes, heart failure, liver disease and arthritis.

Talk with your vet about the healthiest weight for your cat based on age, sex and breed. If your cat is overweight, gradually decrease your pet's food intake and increase its exercise levels to reach the target weight suggested by your vet. Many cat owners allow their cat to eat freely from a bowl of food throughout the day and live a sedentary lifestyle where they burn few calories. While pampering cat owners may see this as spoiling their fur-baby, it's actually terrible for the long-term well-being of your kitty.

Whether your cat is currently overweight or at a normal weight, it's best to feed it only twice a day and to limit portion size. Increase physical activity by taking your cat on leashed walks, playing with toys regularly or allowing your cat to roam outdoors for a few hours a day.

More: 10 things my dog gets away with that my kids never could

4. Cat-proof your home

Even if you keep your cat indoors, there are still plenty of threats to its safety inside your home. Cats are curious, and if there is trouble, they will always find it! To reduce the chances that your cat will be poisoned, electrocuted or injured, it's important to do your best to cat-proof your home.

Use only non-toxic cleaners in case kitty accidentally ingests a cleaning product. Conceal any electrical wires behind furniture, protect them with chew-proof covers or try bitter sprays that have an unpleasant taste that discourages cats from chewing. Secure any heavy objects that your cat might accidentally knock over onto itself. Also make sure your house plants aren't toxic for cats by checking the list from the ASPCA.

5. Weekly grooming

Cats can be obsessive self-groomers. While your cat's digestive system is meant to handle hairballs, if they become too large for your cat to pass, they can result in a life-threatening blockage. To cut down on the amount of hair your cat is ingesting, and to decrease the loose hair in your home, you should try to brush your cat at least once a week.

If your cat stops eating suddenly, has chronic diarrhea, displays an uncharacteristic lack of energy or gags many times without producing a hairball, your cat might be suffering from a blockage. If the problems persist, go to your vet immediately. Surgery to remove a hairball blockage can, unfortunately, cost thousands of dollars, so grooming is definitely worth the effort!

Keeping your cat healthy and happy can be affordable, easy and even fun. Follow these simple tips, and you can increase the quality and length of your beloved fur-baby's life.

I'm tired of people suddenly being nice when they find out my kid's 'label'

Summer is definitely in full swing at my house. We’re staying busy, rushing from tennis lessons to swim lessons to educational camps.

With a child on the autism spectrum, I’ve learned that schedules and order are a must for us in the summer. If I don’t have the day’s schedule written on the white board in the kitchen, he plans the day down to the minute. Hey, at least he’s keeping me honest.

More: Sharing cute photos of my kids' naked butts comes at too high a price

The other thing I’ve been honest about this summer is his autism diagnosis. There was a time before we knew he was on the spectrum that most summer activities were hard. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still hard; but they used to be really hard.

Since my boys are all so close in age, I would sign them all up for the same camps and lessons. With the three oldest participating in the same activities, the difference between my typical two and my other son was obvious. Many a camp counselor or tennis instructor would get angry at his behavior, which included wandering around, blurting out during instruction, or finding his own zone somewhere off in a corner away from the activity. Swim lessons were a disaster, with my son getting virtually ignored as he splashed on the steps of the pool. And I would feel dagger eyes judging me as an incompetent parent.

When my son was six, he and his brothers were taking golf lessons. All he wanted to do was swing the club and stand by the instructor trying to tell her facts about sharks. In the middle of the lesson she marched up to where I was sitting and demanded, “What’s the matter with him? Does he have autism or something?” I was taken aback, upset at her words and tone, but also because I didn’t have an answer for her.

But now I do.

More: 19 DIYs every mom should have in her arsenal

Yes, he has autism; and it’s one of the first things I mention when signing him up for summer activities.

Now, instead of treating him as if he’s simply “naughty,” I can give the instructors some pointers on what to say or do when they need to turn his attention back to the group. I can provide them with clues as to why he may or may not be engaging in certain activities. And I can give them a little time to prepare for his presence, too.

I’ve seen a big difference in how he gets treated and what he is getting out of his summer camps now. Instructors ask me to elaborate on what they can do or say, and on what strategies have worked for us. They handle his “misbehavior” as what it is: something he can’t always control. They indulge his need for adult talk time. Sometimes, they make him a special helper.

More often than not, they see him how every other adult sees him: as a delightfully interesting kid who happens to have ASD.

At the end of the first week of tennis lessons this summer, I asked the instructor how my son was getting along.

“The other instructor and I talked strategy and set up some visual cues to help him know where to stand,” he replied.

I walked away smiling. Smiling, instead of feeling hopeless and hurt and like a failing parent. They were working with him and understanding him.

Unfortunately, these days almost everyone knows a child on the autism spectrum; but fortunately, there is a greater understanding of how to work with these children. With that greater understanding comes something else that our ASD children need: practice and experience effectively using their skills in regular social situations.

Wouldn’t it be great if we treated all children like that, whether they have a label or not?

More: No kid should come home from day care looking like this

The other day, a little boy in the tennis group before ours was having a very hard time. He had forgotten his racket and was refusing to take the one being offered to him by the instructor. I could see the look of panic on the boy’s face, the anxiety growing as the instructor threatened to call his mother.

It made me sad and a little mad because I could see an easy way around the conflict. But not everyone who works with children can. They just see naughtiness and stubbornness.

And those are the wrong labels for any child.

Mom forced to pay her son's student loans after he's murdered

$
0
0

The death of someone we love is always devastating, and the surrealism of such a profound loss is almost always compounded by the absurd to-do list of affair tidying. Bills and subscriptions must be canceled. People must be notified; paperwork, filed. It's a bizarre feeling and one that's virtually impossible to prepare for, especially if the person you're burying is a child.

Marcia DeOliveira-Longinetti's experience with the strange bureaucracy of death and final affairs got even weirder, however, when she notified the New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority that her son, Kevin, had been murdered and would be unable to pay back his student loan.

More: My history of jail and drug addiction makes me feel virtually unemployable

She got a response quickly enough — a letter that offered condolences but made it clear in no uncertain terms that DeOliveira-Longinetti, who co-signed the loan with her son, would be responsible for paying the entire outstanding balance anyway. Why? Her child's death did not "meet the threshold for loan forgiveness."

There is absolutely nothing she can do about it; she'll just have to keep paying the loan that was taken out to fund her son's future, tragedy notwithstanding. She will continue to pay nearly $200 a month for the greater part of the next decade, as she has 92 payments left to make.

The story has gotten a lot of attention because of how shocking it seems. How is it possible that these debts aren't discharged even in death? How coldhearted do you have to be to tell a grieving mother, "Sucks to be you, but pay up"?

More: Yes, fireworks really can traumatize military veterans

But in truth, the ferocity with which some student loan debt is collected is staggering. People who have defaulted due to cancer diagnosis or unexpected job loss face wage garnishment, aggressive collections and asset seizure in some states. In New Jersey, where DeOliveira-Longinetti lives, it isn't uncommon for the state to just cut to the chase and sue people who can't or won't pay, often for more than what they initially owed.

What that comes down to is that people like DeOliveira-Longinetti face a choice: Pay the debt, or go to court. She'll pay, because who can afford to be sued? That's pretty much what aggressive lenders like New Jersey's "Assistance" program hope she'll do. It feels a little like extortion in this case.

Of course, lenders have the right to go after people who don't pay. They are lenders, not givers. But there is a difference between what is legally right — collecting the money you're owed — and what is ethically right, which is forgiving debt in certain, extreme cases. This definitely qualifies. The federal government agreed. DeOliveira-Longinetti was able to have that portion of Kevin's student loan forgiven fairly easily. And maybe if she hadn't been a co-signer on her son's loan, she wouldn't be faced with a monthly reminder of just how much she's lost in the form of a student loan statement with her dead son's name on it.

More: Poor people can't get anywhere if we keep judging them for 'luxuries'

But she is. Like many, many parents, she co-signed her child's student loan, hoping the education he would buy with it would leave him capable of paying it back. Who imagines that their child will die so young that they won't even have time enough to use the college education they worked so hard to get? Many people co-sign loans without ever knowing there's a possibility that if the unimaginable happens, they'll still be responsible for the balance.

Lenders have the power to discharge debt in situations like this one, and in many cases, they use that power. It's hard to argue that doing so is anything other than the ethically correct thing to do. DeOliveira-Longinetti's son didn't skip town or shirk his duties; he was murdered. His mother isn't trying to get one over on a system that's so hard-nosed on its "pay up or else" policy that it actually recommends taking out life insurance whenever you co-sign a loan. She's trying to mourn her son.

If you can look at a situation like this and see anything other than ugly, opportunistic greed, then it's very possible you missed your calling in the lucrative business of brokering student loans. You might consider getting in now, when the system is still so rigged that even the death of a young man means a sizable payday.

Don't let an unhealthy body image push you into exercising dangerously

Whether you're looking to drop a few pounds or to simply lead a healthy life, it's accurate to say that there's quite an abundance of information out there about how to lose weight and get fit.

More: It's time to stop judging our health goals against fitness models

Perhaps you follow the latest diet and workout programs — hoping for some fast results or maybe you compare yourself to fitness models — thinking they're the perfect example of what the "ideal" body looks like. But there's one topic that seems to be overlooked, one that could either help or hinder your efforts in your quest for a healthy lifestyle. That topic is exercise safety, and being aware of it can prevent unnecessary injury. It could also save your life.

Workout safety tips

  • Chewing gum while exercising could result in choking (it's happened to people before, and they have had very close calls).
  • Not all exercise pain is created equal. While muscle burn and fatigue are fine, when you feel an impending pull, cramp or strain, it's your body's way of telling you to stop what you're doing right now.
  • Lack of a proper warm up could lead to injury. Not cooling down can lead people to lose consciousness and possibly sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), which can be fatal, from pushing themselves too far.
  • You should exercise like a beginner if you are a beginner. When you try to do too much too soon, you could easily get hurt. You may also quit out of frustration.

I know how painful it is to live in a body you aren't happy with. It was my reality for years. We can't help but notice the advertisements society has been privy to, all in an effort to sell a concept of what it means to be beautiful. We compare ourselves to the models (and even the mannequins) in the stores — none of which are authentic representations of the human body. Yet we try to look like them. We watch weight-loss shows that demonstrate extreme activities that promote unrealistic methods to lose (a lot of) weight quickly. And we succumb to the opinions of our peers, hoping to be liked, accepted and to fit in

As a result, we make decisions to fix our "broken" selves from a place of emotional turmoil. We try to lose the weight fast in an effort to feel better as soon as possible. This can backfire.

More: When things go wrong my faith helps me stay optimistic

Awareness of exercise safety is the key to healthy living from a place of mindfulness. When you think clearly, you make conscious and deliberate decisions about your activities from a place of sound judgment.

You're then able to make informed choices, and you are armed with the knowledge that can help you line up with a safe and structured program designed to increase your overall well-being. It can help you pay attention to how you think about yourself, question what society deems attractive and think critically about what advertisements are really communicating to you. You're being sold an idea of what it means to be beautiful. These ideas penetrate your mindset — and your wallet.

How to smartly choose an exercise program

  1. Start with an exercise program suited for your level of fitness and progress as you gain the strength and stamina to increase your workload safely.
  2. If you're thinking of hiring a personal trainer, make sure he or she is qualified (educated and truly caring).
  3. Keep your mouth empty when you work out.
  4. Make wellness your ultimate goal. You'll lose the weight the right way and the safe way.

Make exercise safety a priority, like I did. It could save your life.

Start saving your pennies — Starbucks is raising prices

Starbucks has really been upping its game lately, with a whole slew of fun, new rainbow beverages, granitas and summer Frappuccinos that I get thirsty just thinking about. But my little habit is about to get a lot more expensive, as Starbucks has announced that it is raising the prices of some of its drinks by as much as 30 cents each on July 12.

More: The latest Starbucks rainbow drink is totally free

For the past few years, Starbucks has raised its menu prices in early July. This year, it accidentally started charging the higher prices early, after preemptively updating its point-of-sale systems. Expensive coffee is not the wake-up call we want or need, but some people were overcharged by as much as 30 cents. Starbucks then revealed that, though early, the price increase was in fact real. (Those who think they were overcharged can call Starbucks customer service at 1-800-782-7282.)

More: Someone needs to tell you: You're drinking the wrong-colored Starbucks drink

We don't know for sure which beverages are getting a price increase. In past years, plain coffee has gotten more expensive — last year a venti-size coffee went from $2.35 to $2.45 on average (prices vary based on location).

Suppose you buy a venti every weekday, and suppose that venti goes up 30 cents to $2.75 — you're going to wind up shelling out a grand total of $715 on takeout coffee next year.

I just hope specialty beverages don't get too much more expensive. Many Frappuccinos and lattes are already around $5, and though my love for Starbucks runs deep, at a certain point you've got to draw the line.

Farrah Abraham may have had a drink, and here come the mommy police

Mom-shaming knows no bounds, and its latest victim is no stranger to judgment. Step forward, Farrah Abraham, who had the gall to celebrate Fourth of July with her daughter.

More: Hiring help for my kids made me a better mom whether I liked it or not

Teen Mom star Abraham shared a video on her Snapchat and Instagram, showing herself on a boat with friends, celebrating the festivities and drinking beer. Her daughter is right by her side for part of the footage; in fact, at the start of the video, they both are wishing everyone a happy Fourth as they blow kisses at the camera.

Farrah Abraham 4th July video

Farrah Abraham 4th July video

But not everyone is returning the love — many of Abraham's social media followers expressed concern that she was drinking around her child.

What makes this all even more ridiculous is that it’s not entirely clear whether the reality TV mom was even drinking around her daughter. In that part of the video, Sophia isn’t present, and Abraham is wearing a different outfit. But if she did have a few beers while her daughter was there, so friggin' what? Haven't most of us done it?

More: 13 hilarious kids who know Mommy really loves her wine

It’s so easy to judge when you’re secure in the knowledge that how you parent your kids will never end up being public knowledge. And if it did, can we all honestly say we’d be completely happy with the world seeing every aspect of family life? If your answer is yes, well… you’re lying.

If Abraham had posted a drunken Snapchat at 8 a.m. on a Tuesday morning with her daughter crying in the background, then we’d be as worried as anyone else. But being a little drunk in her daughter’s company on the Fourth of July? We just can't see the crime.

Nobody wants to see anything bad happening to Sophia. But until we all have a damn good reason for being concerned about Abraham’s parenting skills (and putting a 6-year-old in a bikini and enjoying a beer do not count), please, can we all just pipe down and let her get on with it?

More: I'm trying not to stalk my kids at camp, but it's hard to resist

Abraham isn't ever going to be Mom of the Year (who the hell is?), but she's not the devil either. Let's give her a break.

I wore balls in my vagina for my birthday and it wasn't as fun as expected

For my 30th birthday, one of my best girlfriends came to visit me in Phoenix. She'd just gotten out of a very, very long relationship and was looking for a bit of silliness in her life. The morning before my big party, we got manicures and hit the sex toy shop.

My friend Julie wasn't familiar with sex toys, so I did my best to show her around. She’d just read Fifty Shades of Grey, which unfortunately gave her a skewed view on what she had to look forward to in the dating world. The book did mention, however, something called "Ben Wa balls."

I laughed when she asked me about them because, yeah, I knew what they were. Ben Wa balls are little metal balls that you insert in your vagina. They bang around in there and cause stimulation. They can also be used to help strengthen your pelvic floor since you have to stay sort of, well, clenched to keep them in.

More: 11 clitoris facts you'll think about the next time you have sex

Julie demanded we buy some and wear them in celebration of my birthday. I thought it might actually be fun so we each bought a pair of little silver balls and headed home to shower.

While putting on my makeup, Julie wandered into my bathroom walking like a penguin. I didn't have to ask. I just started laughing while she shouted, "Can you hear them?" (In case you're wondering, no, I could not hear a pair of metal balls inside my best friend's vagina.)

I put my own Ben Wa balls inside like they were a pair of fancy jewelry, and off we went to dinner. I got through dinner OK since I sat for most of it. Once we started barhopping, though, I found I had trouble keeping the balls inside. I didn't really notice the sexual stimulation foretold in Fifty Shades, either. I just felt tense.

By bar number two, I surreptitiously took mine out and stashed them in my purse. Julie was in a separate bathroom stall, and as I washed my hands, I suddenly heard the telltale plink of metal on porcelain followed by a barrage of cuss words. "One fell out!" Julie shrieked.

Needless to say, after the amount of Fireball I’d imbibed, I just giggled. Apparently, Julie was just as inebriated as I was because she did not abandon the fallen Ben Wa — she went fishing. Side note: She rinsed the ball before reinsertion.

Julie caught the attention of an adorable off-duty barman, and it wasn't long before she admitted to him what she had clanging around downstairs. He seemed fascinated by the idea and followed her around like a puppy desperately in need of adoption. The bartender came home with us, where the partying continued.

By the time 3 a.m. rolled around (much like a rebel Ben Wa), I was ready for birthday sex with my husband. Julie headed to the guest bedroom with sexy bartender guy. She would tell me the next morning that he insisted on removing the balls himself pre-intercourse… which, frankly, sounded kind of gross to me, especially once I had more experience with Ben Wa balls.

More: 25 candid anal sex tips from someone with actual experience

Post-birthday, I would sometimes wear them around the house while cleaning. When I went to remove them, there were times when I swore my body had swallowed one and that an ER visit was in my future. Warning: Those balls are sneaky little critters!

Yes, I suppose you could say Julie's evening with Ben Wa went better than my own, since I wussed out after two bars. I didn't find the experience to be overly sensual, and having them in made it much harder to strut — or, at least, I felt more cautious in my strutting. The last thing I wanted was a little silver ball falling onto the floor and rolling to a stop in the middle of a romantic restaurant. There's just no explaining that.

5 skincare tips from your mom that you should actually take to heart

When Alicia Keys recently revealed her no-makeup selfie, I couldn't have been the only who stared in awe at how beautiful her skin was. Yeah, she's a celebrity (and she may have just have great genetics), but honestly, having great skin doesn't have to cost a lot of money or take a lot of time. Try incorporating these habits into your routine for 30 days and see what a difference it can make with your skin.

1. Drink More Water

Right, so you've heard this one before. But that's because it's a fact that proper hydration makes all our systems work properly — that includes the skin. When you're dehydrated, your skin can look more wrinkled. Isn't that a great reason to sip up? Keep in mind that water intake can vary per person and you should drink more when exercising or in the sun.

2. Stay Out of the Sun

I know what you're thinking - stay out of the sun during prime swimming season? But fact is, the sun's ultraviolet rays are aging your skin. Commit to doing more than simply wearing sunscreen on your face every day. For younger-looking skin, you need to wear SPF 30 on your face; wear large sunglasses when outside to prevent squinting and further wrinkles from forming; and also wear a wide-brimmed hat to shade the face even further.

3. Break Bad Habits

This may seem obvious, but habits such as staying up late, drinking heavily, smoking and being stressed are just a small number of things that contribute to making our skin look older than it is. Start breaking these bad habits (slowly) and watch your skin change right before your eyes.

4. Use Efficacious Products

Image: Target

You may already have your skin-care regimen down pat, but adding a serum into your routine can make a noticeable difference. For fast results, I like No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Serum. This powerful serum is the U.K.'s best-selling anti-aging serum, and it is now available in the U.S.

Made with No7’s renowned anti-aging peptide MATRIXYL 3000 Plus™ that works to help repair damaged skin and restore key proteins that often break down as we age and is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles in just four weeks! I noticed that my skin started to look younger two weeks after I started using it. No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Serum is available for under $30 at Target.

5. Get More Sleep

There is such a thing as beauty sleep. Getting into a regular sleeping pattern with consistent 7–8 hours of sleep each night will help you so much more than you think. The body repairs and recovers itself while you sleep — that includes your skin. Apply No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Serum under moisturizer twice a day, once in the AM and once in the PM, to deliver even better anti-aging benefits. If you have trouble falling asleep, invest in a silky sleep mask, turn off the TV and be sure to stay off the computer and mobile devices for at least 30 minutes before retiring for the night.

Kaley Cuoco let her dogs sit on a flag — here's why that's a problem

At first glance, it seems like another silly celebrity dust-up. Kaley Cuoco posted a photo on her Instagram of her dogs perched on an American flag. People went crazy. She took it down and apologized. Case closed, right?

Well, yes and no. The Big Bang Theory star has made it pretty clear she's a proud American and didn't mean to disrespect our country's flag — or her legion of fans — with her photo.

Note that this is a screengrab, as the actual photo was removed by Cuoco. As she said in a follow-up post, "Yesterday I made a mistake by posting the picture that was taken of my sweet dogs posing on an American flag. I sincerely apologize to anyone that has been offended by my previous post. This is no way reflects my feelings toward what the American flag represents."

We all make mistakes, and she's been a class act about owning up to hers. On Cuoco's side, let's call this "problem" solved. But let's talk about all the hate and anger she's been dealing with for a minute. Apparently people have forgotten that whole "he who is without sin cast the first stone" business.

Cuoco is far from the first American to walk into a flag faux pas.

It seems every year the internet gets its panties in a bunch over something like this, and we're just talking about the cases that go viral. With the patriotic holidays that star-spangle our summer, you can easily spot dozens of cases of Old Glory being treated poorly on your own social media feeds, typically by unwitting Americans who just don't know any better.

More: The very best advice Michelle Obama has dished up over the years

The sad fact is, most Americans have no idea what you're supposed to do with the American flag beyond staring in its general direction, hand over heart, when The Star-Spangled Banner plays. It's hardly surprising when you consider that 22 percent of Americans know all five members of the family in The Simpsons, while just 1 in 1,000 can name all five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment (those would be freedom of the press, speech, religion, assembly and petition of grievances, by the way). Or the fact that — two years into the Obama administration back in 2011 — 29 percent of Americans couldn't name Joe Biden when asked if they knew who the vice president of the United States was.

Americans love to squawk about living in the greatest country on Earth, but we're wildly ignorant about some pretty basic American facts... and that includes what the rules are regarding our national symbol.

So before you point fingers at Cuoco and rail against her, let's take a pop quiz. How many of these rules, straight out of the U.S. Code, do you follow to the letter?

1. The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

2. The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

3. The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle or of a railroad train or a boat. When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.

4. The flag should form a distinctive feature of the ceremony of unveiling a statue or monument, but it should never be used as the covering for the statue or monument.

5. The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery.

6. The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

7. The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever.

8. The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

More: This is for all the 'loud' women out there... come sit by me!

That's a lot to pack in, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. The U.S. Code has 10 sections relating to the flag, each with subsections like those seen above. And mistakes are made — constantly.

Kaley Cuoco screwed up, but she's vowed to do a little better by our national symbol moving forward. How about you?

11 things depression feels like besides 'sad'

$
0
0

People who have never had depression think they know what it feels like. It's sad; it's the blues; it's, well, depressing, right? It is but it is so, so much more than that.

My family tree is a weeping willow and as such, depression runs in my blood. And I'm not talking about the occasional blues or Eeyore-ish personality. I'm talking about the major depressive disorder that has caused two of my close family members to attempt suicide and three others to be hospitalized, extensively. While I don't struggle quite on that level, I do definitely have depression and have had plenty of my own dark days.

More: I may never get off depression meds, and that's OK

I am generally a pretty optimistic, happy person, so the revelation that I have depression often takes people by surprise. "But you don't seem sad," they say. And that's because depression is so much more than a case of the blues. It changes you in unexpected ways that go far beyond "just sad." It's hard to explain to someone who's never experienced it, but you can have depression and not look sad all the time.

Remember Kristen Bell's essay for Motto, in which she described how depression stole her "bubbly, positive personality" and transformed her into someone she didn't recognize?

"For me, depression is not sadness," she writes. "It’s not having a bad day and needing a hug. It gave me a complete and utter sense of isolation and loneliness. Its debilitation was all-consuming, and it shut down my mental circuit board. I felt worthless, like I had nothing to offer, like I was a failure."

I mean, this is the woman who voiced Anna in Frozen, arguably the perkiest of all perky cartoon characters. This is the actress who played Veronica Mars and was the funniest part of Zootopia. She married Dax Shepard, for Pete's sake. If her life isn't a laugh a minute then whose is? But of course, depression isn't something that can be conquered by sheer will, erased by playing a character or even eclipsed by true love. It's a mental illness.

More: Thank you, Kristen Bell, for flipping the script on mental illness

And that's what I wish people understood more about it. Depression isn't about being sad; it's about being sick. So on that note, here are 11 things that depression feels like for me — that aren't sadness at all:

1. Lonely. I've never felt more alone in my life, even in a room filled with people. Depression steals the ability to reach out to people and, even worse, to feel them reaching out to you.

2. Disconnected. Depression is this strange combination of heaviness and lightness. I feel crushed under the weight of my feelings, but also like I'm floating away from my body. I'm watching people from a long, long ways away — even when they're right in front of me.

3. Guilt. If there's one emotion I've discovered all people with depression really struggle with, it's guilt. We don't like what this illness does to us or how it hurts those around us. We feel terrible about how it impacts our ability to do our jobs, care for our kids, be a good friend, enjoy our hobbies, take care of ourselves and love our loved ones. From the outside, it may seem like we don't care at all, but in reality, most of us care too much. We feel those losses keenly.

4. Pain. There's a reason that depression often occurs along with conditions that cause or are the result of chronic pain. The mind and the body aren't as separate as we'd like to think they are, and pain in one often translates to pain in the other. Depression is pain on a mental, spiritual and physical level.

5. Too, too much. This one is hard to describe, but I know this feeling of being "too much" all the time isn't unique to just me. I feel too much, in general — every sensation, all day, every day, and I can't turn it off. Some people call it being a "highly sensitive person," but no matter what label you put on it, feeling everything all the time is overwhelming and consuming.

More: My postpartum depression made me a better mom in the long run

6. Numb. This may seem contradictory to the last one, but I think they go hand in hand. Eventually your body shuts down from feeling all the feelings, all the time. And then? You're just... numb, like being wrapped in gauze.

7. Happy. Oh yes, you can be happy and depressed! At the same time even. Happy and sad are two sides of the same coin and you can't feel one without the other. For me, extreme happiness can be so joyful my heart feels like it will break, similarly to how sorrow can be so devastating my heart aches. And a hurt heart is a hurt heart, regardless of how you get it.

8. Exhausted. Depression causes physical tiredness for sure, but it also causes a unique type of existential exhaustion. Fighting yourself and your feelings and the world all the time is terribly exhausting, to the point where even the little things like getting dressed or brushing teeth feel too difficult. And if left untreated long enough, this exhaustion, I believe, can lead to the sadly common wish that people with depression sometimes express: To "lie down and never wake up."

9. Mute. I'm a talker and a writer. I love communicating with people, but when I'm depressed, that ability to speak in any form is the first thing to go; I just don't have the words anymore.

10. Overwhelmed. One of the first outward signs that I'm relapsing into depression is my total and utter inability to make decisions. Everything just feels too hard, and deciding what socks to wear that day feels just as overwhelming as deciding whether or not to move across the country. I can't prioritize or categorize; everything feels like an emergency, so I end up doing nothing.

11. Angry. This one doesn't get enough attention because I think people often expect those of us with depression to be meek, weepy and inert. But for me anyhow, there is always an undercurrent of straight-up rage. Mostly, I'm angry at myself. Often, I'm angry at the world. In my more rational moments, I'm angry at my illness. Sometimes my anger has no direction. But when it's bad? I lash out at those around me. And I think this is what I hate the worst about my depression.

If reading this list depressed you, I am sorry. But I'm guessing that for those of you who've ever had depression it feels like relief. Too many of us feel like there's a "right" or "wrong" way to be depressed, but there isn't. However it feels to you is your experience and denying it will only make the depression worse.

What depression really feels like shouldn't be the end of the discussion. As Bell so astutely pointed out, depression isn't something that can be cured with a hug or an admonition to "smile more!". I don't know that it can ever be totally cured. But it can be helped. I believe that with all my heart and I live that every day. Depression isn't the end of the story, it's just a part of it and that starts with more of us talking about it. Because if it can happen to Kristen Bell, it can happen to anyone!

If you struggle with depression too, please know there is help available. For a list of resources, visit the National Alliance on Mental Health. If you or anyone you know is having suicidal thoughts, call or visit the National Suicide Prevention Hotline 1-800-273-8255.

Wow, Gwen Stefani's divorce really turned her life completely upside down

Gwen Stefani's divorce from Gavin Rossdale played out very publicly; while she made no secret of her heartbreak, behind closed doors it was worse than we knew at the time.

More: Gavin Rossdale needs to butt out of Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton's relationship

During an interview with Harper's Bazaar for their August issue, Stefani spoke candidly about the discovery of her husband's alleged indiscretions with the family nanny, and the devastation that followed.

"It was the beginning of hell. Like six, seven, eight months of torture, trying to figure out this big secret," Stefani told the publication, adding that she wanted to "tell everybody," but kept mostly quiet for the sake of her children.

Everyone knows what happened between Stefani and Rossdale — their every move was reported and dissected, becoming the topic of multiple reports, and causing even more rumors — but how did she cope, knowing her divorce was playing out in the media?

More: Gwen Stefani isn't pregnant or engaged, but you can keep the rumors coming

According to Stefani, she turned to prayer.

"That's my childhood, that's how I was raised. And I think I strayed from that. But you know when it gets that bad, you just get desperate? You're on your knees. You're like, 'What do I do?' You can't even go to your parents and ask them what to do," she explained.

Stefani also focused her time on her three sons, who she now shares custody of with Rossdale, something which is extremely painful for the loving mom.

"It was so insane because not only did my family break up, but then my kids are taken away like half the time, so that was really like, 'What?! What did I do?" she admits.

More: Blake Shelton celebrated his 40th birthday with childlike enthusiasm

Stefani's divorce left her with "shattered" dreams. "All I wanted my whole life was to have babies, be married, like what my parents have," she told the publication. But rather than feeling sorry for herself, she decided to use these emotions for something good, and channel them into her new studio album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like.

Her album has been a huge success, but more than that, we're happy to see how Stefani's strong will helped her to turn those difficult times in her life into something creative and inspiring, something that may help others going through similar situations to know that it's OK, things do (eventually) get better.

The horrifying footage of the death of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this week has once again sent shock waves through our country. There he is, pinned to the ground with two police officers on top of him, when suddenly you hear, "He has a gun!" Then piercing gunshots ring out, leaving the 37-year-old black man dead.

It's horrifying. It's rage-inducing. While we don't have all the details, what we see is almost too painful to watch, another black man appearing to die at the hand of police. The question is, should we be watching it?

Yes, screams the rage, the part of us that knows it's vital that the world sees what's happening on our streets. Yes, screams the part that knows we have a terrifying problem in this country between police and minorities. Yes, when just last year we saw the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Yes, when studies show that in the U.S., black people are twice as likely to be unarmed when shot and killed by police as white people are. Yes, we need to see every painful moment to raise awareness, to not ignore what's happening so as to not let it happen again.

But then there's the nagging "no" there as well as we feel the sadness and the deep, deep sorrow we have for this man's family, for his friends and those who loved him. For those whose heartfelt sadness is now the topic of every news show, the rallying cry for those with a cause. Sterling was the father of five children. These five children are grieving the loss of their father as the world watches him die over and over. And no matter how important it is to raise awareness and hold police accountable, there's just something about it that feels wrong in these situations.

They're not the first family to have to watch their loved one's final moments played out on video for the world to see either. From Sandra Bland, who was found in a Texas jail cell under suspicious circumstances, to Antonio Perkins, who was shot and killed while broadcasting on Facebook Live, the world now gawks at some of the most painful moments of people's lives.

With video of almost any move a person makes just a cellphone away, it's impossible to think we won't continue to see videos of horrifying incidents light the internet on fire. And in some cases that's a good thing. However, while we watch them, share them and comment on them, the least we can do is to do so with respect and remembering first and foremost those grieving the person we're all watching die.
