You'll want to frame this spiked rhubarb upside-down cake before eating it

0

This eye-catching upside-down cake is easier to make than you might think. (And what a great way to get your veggies!) The hardest part is cutting the rhubarb into pieces and fitting them in the pan — which really isn't that hard at all.

When choosing the stalks of rhubarb at the store, I like to get the ones with the deepest red color because they're so pretty on top of the cake. But I have a little secret on how to make this cake just a bit more colorful that I'll share with you. Kind of like some "lipstick" and "mascara" for cake. Let's check how to make this almost-too-pretty-to-eat yummy.

Heat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Cut the rhubarb into pieces that are one-third of the dimension of the square pan being used. If using wide stalks of rhubarb, cut them in half lengthwise.

To a medium- to large-size shallow casserole dish, add the sugar, water and Irish cream.

Whisk together.

Grease the bottom and all sides of a square baking pan with butter.

Cut a large piece of parchment paper to fit inside the pan, and lay it tightly in the pan so that it sticks to the butter. Leave some extra paper above the edges of the pan to act as handles to eventually lift the cake out of the pan. Then grease the bottom and sides of the parchment paper with butter.

Lay the rhubarb red side down as tightly as possible in a basket weave pattern, with four sticks of rhubarb in each direction. Try to not leave spaces between the rhubarb to minimize the amount of cake batter that will seep through to the bottom, which will really be the top. As you're fitting in the pieces of rhubarb, you may need to trim the edges slightly so they all fit tightly together.

Next, make the cake batter. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter, sugar, eggs and Irish cream. Add the milk, vanilla extract, salt, flour and baking powder. Mix together until all the ingredients are incorporated.

Pour the cake batter over the rhubarb.

Bake until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted in the middle of the cake (about 40 to 45 minutes). Let cool completely. Then, using the parchment paper handles, lift the cake out of the pan, carefully turn it over, and lay it rhubarb side up on a large, flat serving plate. Carefully peel the parchment paper off the top of the rhubarb. Don't worry if the rhubarb doesn't look colorful; it will turn a little darker after being exposed to air.

Then, spruce up the cake ("lipstick" and "mascara") by cutting a thin piece of cake off each side to give it clean edges. As an option, use the dull end of a small knife to cut out the cake from the very top that seeped through the sticks of rhubarb so the basket weave looks more defined. As an option (for the "lipstick"), dab a little bit of light pink food coloring on a paper towel, and very lightly brush it against the rhubarb so it has a pretty pinkish color to it. You may need to use your finger for a little help lightly spreading the pink onto the rhubarb.

The good news is that the pieces are already predetermined, and all you have to do is cut in between the basket weave patterns.

Just before serving, drizzle Irish cream on top of each serving, and top with whipped cream. Feel free to add extra whipped cream like I like to do. And then, Irish cream drizzled on top of the whipped cream to top it all off.

Maura's struggle is going to make Rizzoli & Isles' Season 7 unbearable to watch

More: A recap of Rizzoli & Isles Season 4 in 10 GIFS

The seventh and final season of Rizzoli & Isles is upon us, and already... yikes. If you haven't been watching, here's what to know: Monica Reyes is the one who's been tormenting Jane all this time. There was a lot of shooting. Jane ran around in a dark alley barefoot. Maura has a head injury, which is already affecting her ability to remember important words, and making me increasingly nauseous in anticipation of the rest of this season.

More: QUIZ: Are you Rizzoli or Isles?

Could there be a more tragic fate for Maura than a loss of cognition? (I mean, other than death.) She's among the smartest female characters on television, so in a way, it's appropriate, plot-wise, that she'd suffer in this manner, but also, ugh. Why? Are we going to have to watch the slow (or maybe not slow, considering we're already four episodes into this season) deterioration of Maura's brain, while the only physical indication that anything is wrong will be the awkward Band-Aid on her forehead? It's going to be super hard to pay attention to cases this season since I'm already obsessed with Maura and how this injury is going to play out, in addition to how the writers plan to give this show the finale it deserves after seven seasons of delightful woman-powered procedural drama.

It's not as though the Maura brain thing is the only thing we have to consider in these final episodes. After all, crime still exists and people still have jobs to do. There is the potential of Frankie and Nina actually having a relationship; the whole "Jane has sacrificed her social life for her job" thing; the promise of larger conspiracies (possibly including the Post Office?); the ramifications of the Alice Sands business, which will certainly be felt, even though she's gone now, and of course, whether or not Maura and Jane will fall into each other's arms and finally give us all what we've been waiting for: a lesbian love story that ends joyfully instead of in doom. It won't happen, but if you watch the show, you probably think it's been happening all along, and it's just not being shown to us on camera, unless you count the morning-after scenes involving pajamas, rumpled hair and heart-eyes. There is certainly the possibility that Jane and Maura will end up with male suitors, but if I can't have a sturdy and happy lesbian couple on TV, I can at least hope that the writers don't destroy Maura's brain.

In parting, here is this most delightful tweet to make us feel a little better.

As a horse carriage driver, I disagree with claims of cruelty in the industry

0
0

As a carriage driver, it pains me to hear the misinformation floating around the internet about carriage horses, and horses in general. Not only are some of the myths surrounding carriage horses outright lies, but abolishing horse-drawn carriages won't even begin to solve the problems highlighted by their existence.

More: 6 reasons why I refuse to take my son on a horse-drawn carriage ride

Unlike many of my friends, I have not driven carriage horses in NYC or Philadelphia, where most of the debate is taking place, but as the vitriol from the anti-carriage horse industry has started to spill into my quieter corner of the world, I can't help but protest. There are bad eggs in every industry, but please do not assume that all carriage drivers are cruel.

Here are the myths about carriage horses I hear most often, from the perspective of the person behind the lines.

1. Horses should be free, not chained to heavy carriages

Horses are domestic animals. We have worked beside them for most of our existence. Turning all horses loose to run free on pastures that don't exist is a pipe dream that would be disastrous for all involved, especially the horses. Officials are already struggling to control existing wild horse populations. Adding more horses to public rangelands would stress the natural resources of the grasslands and add to the current overpopulation problem.

Depriving humans of interaction with horses, I believe, is also cruel. Whether you ride horses, rescue horses, drive horses or work with horses on a therapeutic level, horses add depth and meaning to many human lives. This is a two-way street. Even if you want to deny that horses could possibly enjoy these interactions without the love and financial support of humans, these horses would end up overcrowding rescues and many would end their lives at slaughter. Death is not an option I would ever choose for my horses.

2. Horses don't want to work

Sure, some of them would rather stand by the hay feeder all day, but most of the horses I've known and driven have genuinely enjoyed their job. They perk up the minute they are hitched and are eager to step out, whether it's on a city street or a country road. I am a firm believer that horses, dogs and people are generally happier with something to do. Horses get bored, just like dogs and people. They need stimulation and exercise to stay mentally and physically healthy. Boredom results in destructive behaviors that regular exercise and socialization prevent. Pulling a carriage is both physically and mentally stimulating, and contrary to public opinion, not actually that hard.

More: Justin Bieber needs to stop glorifying the use of wild animals as pets

2. Pulling a carriage is cruel and unnatural

If you have never driven a carriage or worked with horses, I can see how those carriages might look heavy. The reality is quite different. I am a 150-pound woman and I can move most of the carriages you see on the street by myself. The secret to my incredible strength is simple: carriages are on wheels. Pulling a carriage on well-maintained streets is an easy job for a horse, especially a draft horse, and a horse in decent physical condition should have no problem working a daylong shift. NYC limits their horses to 9-hour shifts with two breaks, but most small carriage horse companies outside of major cities don't work anywhere near those hours.

More: Tiny, adorable horses are making people feel better

3. Carriage horses are whipped and abused

I saw far more horse "abuse" riding in horse shows than I ever saw while driving carriages. The long whip that drivers carry is a communication device, just like the reins. A light tap, while often unnecessary in a well-trained horse, is not painful or abusive. I have never seen a driver whip their horse, although I am sure some do. There are bad eggs in every basket and the horse industry is no exception.

An abused horse is a dangerous horse. I have worked with horses with a history of abuse, and the last thing I would want to do is hitch an abused animal to a carriage full of tourists. That puts everyone at risk. Like most drivers, I want happy, well-adjusted horses, not a nervous animal motivated by fear.

4. Pollution is bad for horses

Of course pollution is bad for horses, just like it is bad for people, dogs, cats, birds and all other living things. Rather than banning horses from cities because of pollution, and perhaps dogs, cats and any outside human jobs while we are at it, maybe we should work instead to limit pollution.

5. Horses are exposed to extreme temperatures and dangerous conditions

Carriage drivers and cities work together to ensure that our horses are safe and comfortable. While regulations vary slightly from city to city, most carriage drivers do their best to make sure their horses work in suitable conditions and that they are well taken care of at the end of the day. Horses are accustomed to both chilly and warm temperatures. Carriage drivers are often more affected by the weather than the horses are.

Accidents do happen, and when they do, they are tragic. I am sure as more people text and drive they will continue to happen, claiming both horse and human lives. Banning carriage horses is an easy way out of a much more difficult problem: careless drivers. Personally, I would love to see more city parks and carriage rides offered in those parks instead of on the street, but villainizing the entire industry is close-minded and unnecessary.

6. Carriage horses all go to slaughter and become dog food

Some carriage horses do go to slaughter, as do racehorses, pet horses and horses from all different backgrounds. Banning carriage horses will not stop horse slaughtering. Some carriage horses get to retire to nice family farms, in part thanks to rescues. Others do not. I would love to see carriage horses all receive loving homes at the end of their tenure, but banning the industry because horses don't get paid retirement with benefits is not the solution — working with the industry is.

7. Carriage horses are outdated

In today's increasingly connected and modernized world, carriage horses serve as a touchstone with our agricultural heritage. For many people, a carriage horse is the closest they will ever come to a horse or another farm animal. This connection with history and nature is even more important as we struggle to combat climate change, problems in our food systems and a lack of education about where our natural resources actually come from. Sure, carriage horses as transportation might be outdated, but we need the reminder of what they stand for more than ever before.

So next time you decide to scream "animal cruelty" out the window at a carriage driver, potentially startling the horse you are trying to protect, why not stop and talk (politely) instead to the carriage driver and get the other side of the argument? If we stop screaming long enough to listen to each other, we might find a compromise that makes everyone happy — especially the horses.

We're not sure Farrah Abraham's movie is supposed to be funny, but it is

Farrah Abraham is about to make her big-screen debut in a slasher flick, and whether it's intentional or not, her acting will leave you in stitches.

Abraham is set to appear in Axeman II: Overkill as "Bible-thumper" Fannie Rae Baker, and her portrayal is totally over the top — she even says so herself.

When asked a couple of years ago when filming began how she was planning on getting into character, Abraham told Starcasm, "I will draw upon the overbearing, beat-the-Bible over your head mentality that others mention or think of when thinking 'uber Bible-thumper.' Getting a little radical about the Bible and taking the words farther than the way God intended," she said. "I've been around all sorts of Christianity growing up, and this leads me to feeling content with researching and playing the role of Fannie perfectly."

Director Joston "El Rey" Theney said the movie has been done for quite a while, but distribution issues caused a major delay in release.

"This film's been done for about a year and a half," Theney said in a news release accompanying the trailer. "There's been a lot of behind-the-scene nonsense but regardless of the outcomes, you will see the film this winter whether it's their release or mine. We have some incredibly awesome fans and die-hard gore-hounds that have been following the release news religiously, and my goal since the beginning has been to satisfy them. They're the reason I make the Axeman films."

So basically, there is still no release date — but this trailer should be more than enough to keep you amused until you can get your hands on the entire movie.

Dear kid who plays at my house: Please stop ignoring me

0
0

Does one of your kids have that one friend that comes over to play who refuses to talk to you? You know, the one who is completely social to every non-parent figure but completely ignores you? When you ask him if he’d like something to drink, he stares at you as if you spoke another language or had antennas growing out the side of your head? I sure do, and I am on a mission to figure him out.

It’s not that this kid is shy. I see him talk to plenty of other kids and some adults. And it's not like he's just getting to know me. Hell, we’ve lived in the same neighborhood for the past five years. He’s been over to play with my son several dozen times. After the first couple of playdates, I figured he was comfortable being around me. Nope. So, is this kid just rude?

More: Let's face it: Only a mother could love these kid drawings of moms

This is how my conversations go with this child. Let’s call him “Johnny” for the sake of privacy.

Me: “Hi Johnny! What have you been up to lately?”

Johnny: *Silence*

Me: “Well, that’s good to not hear. So, how’s your mom?”

Johnny: *Silence*

Me: “Alrighty then, I’ll assume that no news is good news. Would you like a juice box?” Johnny leans over to my son and whispers into his ear.

My son: “Yes, Johnny would like a juice box.”

This is how my typical conversations go with Johnny. I asked my son if Johnny talks to other parents. My son answered in the typical 8-year-old way, “I don’t know.” I asked him why, after all this time, Johnny doesn’t talk to me. My son answered, “Well, you do ask a lot of questions.” Fine. No more questions for Johnny.

For one play date, I resorted to making up sign language. Johnny walked in and I gave him a wave and pointed to the food on the counter. I then pointed to the back door to indicate my son was in the backyard, and gave him a thumbs up. Later that day my son informed me that Johnny thought I was weird. Seriously?

More: 25 kids whose love notes to Dad will make you bust a gut

For the next play date, I decided to leave him notes. I saw him read them, but he did not acknowledge that he did. He went off to play as normal. My son did not tell me that Johnny said I was weird again. For the next few play dates I ignored him completely. He didn’t seem bothered by it.

A few days later I ran into his mom at the grocery store. I asked if Johnny was always quiet when he’s at home because he never talks to me when he’s at my house. She said no, he’s a chatterbox, and he told her that I never talk to him. Huh? Is that how it’s going to be? This kid is messing with me. I can play the game too, kiddo.

The next time I saw Johnny, I gave him a cool staredown. I knew he knew what was up. I simply said to him, “Hey.” After about 15 seconds of silence, he nodded. Ha! Breakthrough! My heart almost burst with happiness. Of course I didn’t let on at all how happy that made me. I continued to ignore him for the next hour or so until he was ready to leave, when I simply said, “Later.” Johnny turned to me, smiled and said, “Bye!” I was floored. I didn’t expect words to come out of his mouth. Once again, Johnny got me.

More: No mom wants to catch her 9-year-old watching porn

We are still at it, this game of not-going-to-talk-but-won’t-be-ignored. I really don’t know who’s winning anymore; I don't even think Johnny sees it as a game. He's an 8-year-old kid, and I doubt he's masterminded a devious plan to drive me crazy. I'm sure he has reasons for ignoring me, and I'm just reading into his actions way too much.

The lesson I learned is that I don't need to try that hard. It's like only wanting that one person to like you just because they don't. It's an age-old problem of not liking rejection. My ego was hurt because an 8-year-old kid didn't think I was a cool mom. I like being that mom all my kid's friends think is fun, but I've accepted that not everyone will think that. I need to learn to be OK with it.

Not long ago, I got a complete phrase out of Johnny. He said, "Your little silver dog looks kinda weird." Um, OK, kid. At least it was more than I've heard from you before. I'll take it, even if you think my dog looks weird. That’s cool, Johnny. Just an acknowledgement that you heard me every once in a while will do. Yes, keep the comments coming, Johnny boy — I need someone to keep me on my toes.

Superman may become Supergirl's biggest enemy & demise

0
0

Supergirl won’t be the only caped crusader in National City next season on Supergirl. Tyler Hoechlin, of Teen Wolf fame, has officially been cast as Superman (aka Clark Kent) for the show’s second season, and while fans debate whether or not he has the broad shoulders and rugged jaw to play America’s favorite superhero (he does, by the way), I’m more concerned about what Superman’s arrival will mean for the show.

According to TV Line, Hoechlin is currently signed on to guest star in the first two episodes of the season, but given the buzz surrounding his casting announcement and the bump in ratings Superman’s arrival in National City is bound to inspire, the idea that Superman might become a resident supporting character isn’t too far-fetched. This, and I cannot say this enough, must not happen. The problem of Superman’s inclusion in Supergirl isn’t about Hoechlin. The actor proved on MTV’s Teen Wolf that he can be a strong lead and that he can play a strong, action-heavy character. (He also comes with a legion of Teen Wolf fans, and that certainly won’t hurt Supergirl in the ratings.) The problem with adding Superman to Supergirl is that he could potentially overshadow Supergirl herself.

More: Supergirl fans are so over being teased with a Superman appearance

Superman has actually already appeared on Supergirl, though fans never saw his face. While most of his appearances have been via online chat (which seems incredibly risky, really, but that’s a whole other problem), he was also seen as a blurry figure when he swooped in to rescue Kara mid-battle toward the beginning of the season. His mysterious presence loomed large over Season 1 of Supergirl and his faceless presence would have continued to hurt the show had it continued for another season. By not humanizing Superman and giving him a face, Supergirl inadvertently made him even more mythical, and thus important, in the show. By letting audiences put a very human (and mortal) face on this new version of Superman, the Supergirl showrunners make him accessible, which in turn lessens the anticipation to see him all the time. Hopefully, giving Superman this two-episode arc will allow for him to be a part of the show without becoming the center of it. This, however, will require some very skillful and calculated writing.

More: Dear CBS, let me solve your budget problems — cancel Supergirl

If Superman becomes a big part of Supergirl, it could ruin the show. (Again, I say this as someone who wanted Superman to be cast for the show as a guest star.) Right now, Superman is only a guest star, but the writers need to be careful not to let it turn into more. Fans will no doubt clamor for more Clark Kent in future episodes, particularly when it comes time for The CW’s huge DC crossover events with Arrow and The Flash, but I’m hoping writers will ignore their calls. Supergirl features the only leading female superhero on screen right now, save Netflix’s Jessica Jones, and it would completely defeat the feminist tone of the show if Superman showed up every other episode to help Supergirl defeat the bad guys. Season 1 of Supergirl was all about Kara finding her strength and her power as an individual, both as Supergirl and as Kara Danvers. The show is grounded in female empowerment through female relationships — Kara’s relationships with her sister, Alex, and her boss, Cat, are especially central to the show — and the show has set itself up as an unapologetic piece of feminist entertainment. If Superman becomes a series regular, or even a regular guest star, it would upset Kara’s feminist journey. It’s not that Superman can’t be a feminist, or that a feminist show needs to have a female-only cast, it’s that Superman is, arguably, the most well-known and beloved superhero in pop culture. His continued presence would inevitably overshadow Supergirl. Moreover, Superman is nothing if not a symbol of masculinity, and I’m worried that having him be a bigger part of the show would lead to more male-dominated story lines, which seems to be the complete opposite of what Supergirl intended to do when it started.

More: Supergirl's Jeremy Jordan is giving us a chance to save a teenage girl — his cousin

Superman coming to Supergirl as a (limited time) guest star can only help the show, which came dangerously close to being canceled before moving from CBS to The CW. But let’s hope showrunners keep it at that, because if Superman became a regular character, it might spell trouble for the Supergirl we all know and love.

Bread in a can is totally weird, but you should definitely try it

0
0

Everyone has a weird food from their childhood they just can't let go of. For some, it's a novelty cereal (Rice Krispies Treats cereal 4eva!). For others, it's processed American cheese slices (Velveeta nachos, anyone?). But me? I'll take brown bread in a can any day — with or without raisins, because I'm wild like that.

It's known as Boston brown bread, though the only kind I ever ate was made by B & M Baked Beans in Maine, and we always called it "bread in a can." It's a super-dense, dark brown bread made with wheat and rye flour. It's lightly spiced, moist thanks to buttermilk and sweetened with rich, dark molasses. Sometimes it has raisins, always it's marked with rings from the can, like that love-it-or-hate-it cranberry sauce.

More: Tonight's Dinner: New England clam chowder

Bread in a can is similar to an English pudding in that it's steamed instead of baked like a traditional bread. Apparently the tradition comes from the Pilgrims, who made baked beans and steamed brown bread in brick ovens on Saturdays. The food would be left in the oven overnight, still warm enough to enjoy on Sunday mornings after church, when cooking was prohibited.

Whatever its history, the childhood food I dream about most (aside from my mom's kale soup, of course) is a thick slice of buttered brown bread from a can.

Never mind that I'm a food writer who's supposed to be on the cutting edge of the latest culinary trends — there's something about this old-timey, shelf-stable brown bread that I just can't shake despite all the negative connotations that come with cans.

Got canned? You're fired. On the can? Taking a dump. Canned humor? Tired, rote. Canned meat? Just wrong (no matter what the Spam ad I've recently been served approximately 1,000 times a day on Hulu tries to tell me).

More: 3 ways to bring East Coast flavs to your home

But canned bread is different. Imagine being a kid on a snowy January day in New England. You play all afternoon, building snow forts and sucking on icicles, then come inside when the sun has set, your fingers pink and numb from the cold. On the table? A humble but hearty classic New England meal: hot dogs, maple and brown sugar baked beans and two perfectly round slices of B & M brown bread. Lightly toasted, spread with sweet cream butter and steaming hot, canned brown bread was enough to erase all thoughts of hot chocolate from my mind... for a little while, anyway.

Best of all, the next morning there was sure to be a few slices left over, the perfect breakfast to warm me up for another day of snowball fights or, in the summer, the fuel I needed to successfully bound and crash into the waves at the local beach without actually drowning.

These days I live in California, and canned brown bread is hard to find. And even though I make almost everything from scratch, including regular sandwich bread, I've never tried making bread in a can at home. Maybe I'm afraid it won't live up to the real thing — or afraid that the real thing isn't all it's made out to be in my memories. But either way, when I'm feeling nostalgic and missing home, brown bread in a can is never far from my mind.

More: Hayden Panettiere insider reveals post-rehab health update

Kelly Bensimon opened up about her struggle with postpartum depression, and it's something many women can relate to.

The former Real Housewives of New York star said that after the birth of her first child, she felt isolated, anxious and hated being alone with her baby.

"I had postpartum really bad [with my first child]," Bensimon told People magazine's Mom Talk series. "I couldn't drive, I had anxiety, I didn't want to be by myself.

"My ex-husband had just left to go traveling, and I was with this child by myself," she says. "I was so young and none of my friends had kids, and I just… I was petrified.

"It was on and off for like two years," she continued. And making it worse was that she had neither the information nor the support we have available online today, since this was close to 20 years ago.

More: Teen Mom's Catelyn Lowell reveals why she's heading to rehab

"I had no one to defer to except research material from, like, the ice age," Bensimon said, adding that internet info and groups make it a little easier for today's new moms.

"When I was having a child, women were not really open to talking about the good and the bad things," she adds. "You guys seem very open about ‘There's good, bad and there's ugly.'

"And a lot of women are like, ‘No no no, it's perfect, it's all great,'" Bensimon continued. "And I'm like, ‘I'm not great. I'm not feeling good.'"

Eventually the fog cleared, but it took two years and a second pregnancy.

With all of the horrible stuff going on in the world this week, the emergence of the alleged new romance between Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston was a welcome distraction. Photos of Hiddleswift's lovey-doveyness polarized the internet — and resulted in some hilarious reactions in the form memes, tweets and GIFs.

Here are some of our favorites.

Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher confronts Jordan about those cheating rumors

As soon as Jordan Rodgers made his reality television debut on The Bachelorette and emerged as an early frontrunner by receiving the first impression rose, one of his ex-girlfriends took to social media to call him a cheater.

"Riding the bench doesn't get in the way of a relationship, but cheating does. #yourpitchisntperfect @jrodgers11 #alwayswantedtobefamous #dreamscometrue #tuneinnextweekformoreBS," Brittany Farrar wrote on Instagram.

More: The Bachelorette's frontrunner Jordan Rodgers may not be the good guy we thought

Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher is finally confronting Rodgers about those cheating rumors in a brand new sneak peek of this coming Monday's episode.

"I actually met somebody that you used to date. She was in Dallas and this girl told me that you guys had dated and you kinda were off and on with her, you kinda blew her off, there was some trust stuff," Fletcher said in the clip that premiered on E! Online. "You don't look happy."

More: There goes our Bachelorette season! Our frontrunner may be worse than Chad

"I don't even know what to say there," Rodgers said, fumbling through his words.

"You told me earlier today that you were ready now for something serious like a marriage, but that you weren't before," Fletcher said. "Why now?"

"Unfortunately it has a lot to do with sports. I was focused on one thing in my life, being the best football player I could be. And when I wasn't, it was tough. I took it out on people. So, she was along for the roller coaster of when I was at my best and when I was at my worst," Rodgers confessed in the video. "I'll be the first one to admit that that was awful and I wasn't the best person all the time."

"Was there cheating?" Fletcher asked right before the clip cuts off.

This clip leaves us with a few questions: Did Rodgers cheat on his ex? Also, how did Fletcher randomly meet this girl he used to date? That seems odd.

I guess we'll have to tune in to next week's episode of The Bachelorette to find out if Rodgers did cheat on his ex-girlfriend, but we may never know how Fletcher just happened to meet her in the first place.

Amy Schumer has found love in a hopeless place. Well, we're not sure how hopeless of a place she found it in, but the comedian has been open about her dating struggles in the past. Now, it sounds like she may have finally found Mr. Right.

Schumer graces the cover of the July issue of Vogue and reveals that she's very much in love with her man, Chicago furniture designer Ben Hanisch.

More: Trolls, please take a moment to read Amy Schumer's caption on her swimsuit photo

"We're in love," Schumer said. "And we're still in total honeymoon phase. It's a real relationship. Who knows what will happen, but we're real good right now."

The comedy star has often joked about her past dating struggles, making them the subject of her stand-up and even her movie Trainwreck.

"Remember 20s love? You're just so arrogant," Schumer said in an HBO standup special. "You're like, ‘We're so lucky we found each other. What are all these sad songs about? [Laughs.]' I think of 20s love as the same as the tsunami, because I read that in the tsunami the tide was way in, so fish were flopping around the shore and people were like siked, they were gathering them with baskets like, I can't believe my luck, look at all these fish!' That's like 20s love, you're like, 'For me and me!' And then you're like oh f*** and [a huge wave] murders you, but enjoy it."

More: Amy Schumer was right to be royally pissed at one downright disrespectful fan

Schumer also opened up about her struggles with dating and self-confidence in her early 20s and college days.

"I lost all my self-esteem freshman year," Schumer admitted. "I think I was maybe in the twenty-fifth percentile in hotness. And then in my sophomore year, I probably had sex with six guys, and I was like, Maybe I'm like Samantha in Sex and the City and I'll just keep this train movin' so that I don't get attached to anybody. And you won't believe this, but that did not work out. But I always thought that sex was funny. I was always interested in it."

More: Amy Schumer tried a new kind of comedy in Trainwreck, and I wish she hadn't

The 35-year-old actress has definitely gained self-confidence since her college days. She's killing it right now! We're happy to see she's loving life and that she found love with Hanisch.

Smashed chickpeas, crispy prosciutto and perfect poached eggs

Adapted from The Kitchen Shelf by Eve O’Sullivan and Rosie Reynolds (Phaidon, $40, May 2016)

Serves 4

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Total time: 25 minutes

Tip: Smashed chickpeas are also delicious served with nachos or carrot sticks as a healthy snack and are a brilliant alternative to store-bought hummus.

Ingredients:

From the store:

  • Flat-leaf parsley
  • Prosciutto (Parma ham)

Pantry and shelf essentials:

  • 2 (15-ounce/400-gram) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
  • 1 garlic clove, chopped
  • Handful flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
  • 8 slices prosciutto (Parma ham)
  • 4 tablespoons white wine vinegar, for cooking
  • 4 eggs, the freshest you can get
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

  • Put the chickpeas, oil and garlic into a bowl, and mash with a fork until the chickpeas are as smooth as you like. Stir in the parsley and plenty of salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • Heat a skillet (frying pan) over high heat. When hot, add the prosciutto (Parma ham), and cook for 2 – 3 minutes, turning halfway through, until crispy and golden. Remove from the heat, and keep warm.
  • To poach your eggs, bring a large pan of water to a boil. Pour about 1 tablespoon of vinegar into a small glass or ramekin, swirl the vinegar around the glass to coat the sides, then pour out the excess, and discard. Crack an egg into the glass. Stir the boiling water to create a whirlpool, drop the egg into the center, and cook for 3 minutes (for a runny yolk). Remove the egg with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels, and keep warm while you cook the remaining eggs.
  • To serve, pile a generous amount of smashed chickpeas onto a plate, top with a couple of pieces of crispy prosciutto and a poached egg, drizzle with olive oil, and season with black pepper.

Kim Kardashian's latest accessory is a cigarette — and it's so out of character

Kim Kardashian's latest move is surprising, to say the least.

More: Taylor Swift's reps backhand Kanye & Kim Kardashian in the sweetest way possible

Kardashian covers the latest issue of GQ, and while the pictures — black and white, featuring Kardashian topless with an open leather jacket revealing her cleavage — are as hot as we've all come to expect from the selfie queen, there's one accessory that doesn't fit: the cigarette dangling from Kardashian's mouth.

Kim Kardashian smoking in GQ shot

Kim Kardashian smoking in GQ shot

Kardashian is famously anti-smoking — her father, Robert Kardashian, died from esophageal cancer that may have been brought on by smoking. Ever since having her daughter, North, she's also cracked down on hubby Kanye West's cigar habit, sources say.

"Kim’s a complete nonsmoker and she’s forbidden Kanye — who puffs cigars — and her mother, who’s a closet cigarette smoker, from coming anywhere near her precious baby, North, unless they literally scrub themselves down first," an insider told the National Enquirer soon after North was born.

More: No, the Kardashian curse is not a real thing, and it needs to die

Anti-smoking campaigns have scrubbed smoking from having the cool image it once did, and the result has been a huge decline in rates of teen tobacco use. According to the Centers for Disease Control, smoking among middle and high school-age teens declined from 4.3 percent to 2.3 percent between 2011 and 2015. Could Kardashian's promotion of a nasty, deadly habit reverse that trend?

Her followers seem to think so — one of them commented on the shot, which was posted to Instagram, "oh mannn makes quitting that much harder."

Others used the comments section to criticize GQ's decision to photograph Kardashian with the cigarette in her mouth.

"really? we're still glamorizing smoking?" one asked. "Wonder if she took a check for that cig," another wrote.

Miss GB, Zara Holland, did not deserve to lose her title

0
0

If you’ve been watching ITV reality show Love Island, you’ll know that one of the contestants, Zara Holland, is Miss Great Britain. She’s only said it 627 times a day. Except she doesn’t have the right to say it any more, because as of Thursday, she’s been officially stripped of her title.

More: Yolanda Holland is leaving RHOBH, and it's honestly for the better

Her crime? Having sex with new boy Alex Bowen on the show. Scenes aired on Wednesday night showed the two getting up close and personal in the villa’s private Hideaway bedroom. Unfortunately the numerous cameras in the room mean it’s the opposite of private.

Holland, 24, was crowned Miss GB in September 2015, but her actions on Love Island have cut short her reign, with pageant organisers issuing the following statement to confirm she has been dethroned:

"Following recent actions within ITV2 show Love Island it is with deep regret that we, the Miss Great Britain Organisation, have to announce that Zara Holland has formally been de-crowned as Miss Great Britain. As an organisation we have not taken this decision lightly, we are close to all of our winners and wherever possibly stand by them during their rein. That said, we feel we have no choice but to make this decision under the circumstances. The feedback we have received from pageant insiders and members of the general public is such that we cannot promote Zara as a positive role model moving forward. We wholly understand that everyone makes mistakes, but Zara, as an ambassador for Miss Great Britain, simply did not uphold the responsibility expected of the title".

Clearly Holland regretted her actions — she was visibly upset in the Beach Hut confessional the morning after and admitted that what she did was completely out of character for her. "You know when you're in the moment and it just happens", she said. "That's really not like me at all. Why couldn't we have just gone to sleep?"

God knows how Holland is feeling now that she’s been given the news. According to reports, she’s chosen to stay on the show rather than return home — which is probably a wise idea.

More: 15 celebrity couple nicknames — from strange & wacky to totally creative

There’s a whole lot of judgment going down, and it’s completely unfair. For starters, Holland hasn’t done anything the rest of the islanders haven’t done (several times). She comes across as a sweet girl, and she's right — sometimes sex just happens. Between two consenting adults, what’s the problem? Isn’t this what the show is all about?

It’s funny that the other person involved in the sexy time — the man — hasn’t copped anything like the same amount of flak. While Holland was wiping away tears in the Beach Hut and feeling her ears burn as the other women accused her of "playing the victim" and being "stupid" and "naive", Bowen was getting back-slapped by his fellow males. Actually, that’s not funny at all. It’s predictable and boring and misogynistic.

In terms of the Miss GB scandal, let’s drag ourselves out of the Dark Ages. Isn’t this 2016? Shouldn’t women be able to make decisions about their sex lives without being judged… and punished? If a single woman in her 20s is being shamed for taking part in a sexual act, what message does that send to young girls?

It was completely naive and unfair of the Miss GB pageant organisers to give permission to Holland to appear on a reality TV show about a bunch of single 20-somethings hooking up as part of their quest to find love/win the show (whichever way you want to look at it). If they had decided to stand by Holland, that would have suggested that modern-day pageantry is forward-thinking and understands that having sex doesn't make a woman a slag or a disappointment or a bad person. Instead, they've shown how outdated and sanctimonious the system is.

Julianne Hough is not worried about when she'll make it down the aisle.

More: Julianne Hough's huge engagement ring spawns hateful, negative response

Hough, who is engaged to hockey player Brooks Laich, told Us Weekly just how slow she's taking things: 10 months after he popped the question, she hasn't even picked out a dress.

"We kind of just started [planning], and we were like, ‘You know what? Let’s just chill. Let’s just enjoy the engagement process and the fun of it.’ So we haven’t really gotten into it," Hough admitted. "We’re kind of terrible."

But they do know a few of the details about their big day, including the fact that they want to keep it from turning into a huge who's who type of party.

"It’s mainly just friends and family," Hough explained. "We’re keeping it pretty small and intimate."

Hough and Laich met when a mutual friend set them up on a blind date, and dated for more than a year before he proposed. Hough wrote about that night on her blog, saying, "It was magical and sweet. We were at home, romantic, and relaxed, which is perfectly very ‘us.’ We stood on the deck, watching the sun set over the lake and listening to our favorite songs. Not even for a second did I expect that beautiful, serene scene was about to become one of the most meaningful moments of our lives."

She continued, "Getting engaged has been about much more than the engagement itself. The rush of love from friends and family, plus the support from all of you has been overwhelming. The love being poured into this next step of our relationship is incredible, and I’m so very grateful."

But she won't jeopardize her sister's happiness — or risk revealing her tortured past — on a love-'em-and-leave-'em type of guy like Kieran, so it's up to him to prove her wrong. The sight of her lying naked, open and willing beneath him was almost enough to make him want to abandon his idea and bury himself inside her instead.

"Stay still, Fi." He opened the box of sushi.

Opting out of the fish choices, he gently placed a small roll of rice and avocado on both sides of her clavicle, the very tips of her breasts, her stomach and her upper arms. Frozen, she watched him with interest as he covered her with food and then put the rest back on the nightstand.

He grinned as he straddled her thighs. "Tell me what to do next, Fi."

"What?"

"You're in charge, you tell me."

Fiona bit her lip, clearly considering if she could do this. He needed her to tell him; he needed her to feel in charge. That's what it was all about with her. It always had been. Life just happened to Fiona, and she reacted the best she could. She'd never had the chance to grab the reins and take control, and he wanted that for her. Finally, she moved just her lower arms to gently touch her stomach. "Here."

Obliging her request, he leaned down and ate the small bite of the avocado roll he'd placed right above her belly button. She shivered as his lips and tongue swept over her skin, but she tapped her right breast next to tell him she wanted him there.

He bit down partially into the sushi, rubbing it against her nipple, which immediately puckered beneath him, before chewing and swallowing. After finishing that bite, he gently devoured her nipple, pulling it between his teeth and licking her clean.

Moving over to her left breast, he did the same thing, except he brought the roll to her mouth. She opened and he shared the bite with her, the sweet and savory flavors moving over his tongue as they both swallowed.

"Mmm," she moaned against him.

Kieran repeated the process, barely touching her with anything except the sushi and his lips as they both ate the remaining pieces of the sushi positioned on her body. Her breathing ragged, she bit her lip as he stood, unbuttoned his jeans, and pushed them down. He stepped out of them then rolled on protection.

He couldn't wait any longer.

Climbing back onto the bed, no food between them, he gripped her hips and flipped her over onto her stomach. Finally, he pulled her back so she was on all fours in front of him. She looked back over her shoulder, and he groaned at the perfect sight.

She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen, and she was his.
