5 Tips to make adoption more affordable

$

0

When a family first talks to me about their concerns with adoption, I am quick to give them all the resources I have to make adoption more affordable. There are a lot of different angles to finding the funds to pay for adoption, and each avenue will add up when you pursue them concurrently. Here are some tips to make adoption more affordable.

1. Low-risk path

The first and best thing you can do to keep adoption expenses locked down is to choose the lowest risk path possible. It can be tempting to choose a path that is more affordable with less legality involved, but when you do it can lead to more problems, heartache and costs down the road. This is where adoption consultants and other long-standing professionals can help. When you have someone guiding you through the process, she will help you choose not only the safest adoption path — but also a more affordable one.

2. Adoption tax credit

The adoption tax credit is an excellent way to help offset the costs of adoption. When you are looking at adoption, you definitely want to reach out to your tax professional to get the latest regulations and information on this tax credit. As of January 2015, here are the facts:

  • The tax credit is more valuable than a deduction because it is a direct write-off.
  • Since it is not refundable, it will be a reduction on your taxes owed and it can carry for up to five years.
  • Currently, the maximum adoption credit is $13,400 per child or adoption attempt and is also available for adoptions that were unsuccessful prior to the end of the tax year.
  • The adoption credit you receive is based on your adjusted gross income. If your modified adjusted gross income is $201,010 or less, you quality for the entire credit. However, if it is $241,010 or more, you do not qualify.
  • If you adopt a child with special needs in the United States, you will be able to claim the full tax credit, regardless of whether or not you had qualified adoption expenses.

This can get pretty complicated, so work with a professional to make sure you get the maximum benefit.

3. Employer adoption reimbursement

Many employers offer adoption reimbursement for some of your expenses. If you plan on approaching your employer about this, you can use the very helpful free resources and adoption kit supplied by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. When it comes to taxes, employer-paid adoption assistance of up to $13,400 per child will be tax-free depending on your adjusted gross income. Receiving the tax credit does not diminish what you can receive from your employer — and vice versa. These are two sources of funding that can add up for you; you just can’t claim the same expenses under more than one program.

4. Loans and grants

Another way many families pay for adoption is by taking out loans or receiving grants. There are many foundations and funds that offer financial support to families pursuing adoption. One that some of my clients have had the most success with recently is America’s Christian Credit Union. It’s also worth checking out Resources for Adoption as they keep an up-to-date database of loans and grant options.

5. Fundraisers

Fundraising can be a very profitable way to finance your adoption! I recently had a couple, Heidi and Brandon from California, who threw an auction that included:

  • 28 live items including plane rides, quilts, a beach house vacation, firewood and babysitting
  • 85 silent items including jewelry, baked goods, gift cards and gift baskets
  • A dessert auction
  • During the event, they also sold a BBQ dinner and raffle tickets

Their efforts were extremely successful as they raised $18,000 after accounting for their costs! There are many things you can do to raise funds, including building a website, using a fundraising platform like GoFundMe or hosting a raffle.

Remember not to rule out adoption because of costs. When you want to build a family, you shouldn’t let anything stand in your way. There are so many things you can do to lessen the cost of adoption with a little ingenuity.

It's the perfect look for the holidays (although you are unlikely to wear it out unless it's to a Christmas party) and now, instead of just admiring the festive lights and baubles, you can actually transform your face into one. It's called fiber-optic makeup, and a video of this super cool look was recently uploaded to YouTube by Instructables.

Using small fiber-optic strands, LEDs to light the fibers, and several other supplies, "costume and experimental fashion designer" Mikaela Holmes, who was inspired by Christmas and her constant desire to "make things glow," managed to create a visually interesting hairpiece.

The combination of the glimmering fiber optics paired with ethereal makeup makes for a mesmerising look — which would be at home under the ocean with a sea of jellyfish or the deep sea shrimp, Parapandalas.

And if you're keen to recreate this look at home, Holmes has even made an step-by-step list, which includes the supplies you'll need, how to create your own fiber-optic hairpiece, and how to complete the rest of the makeup look, which you can find on Instructables.

It's certainly one way to guarantee that you stand out from the crowd! For more, watch the video below.

Kourtney Kardashian spotted out on the town with another young celeb

Kardashian was spotted on a date with Quincy Combs, son of hip-hop mogul Sean Diddy Combs, Wednesday evening in Los Angeles. And to add insult to injury, they dined at one of Disick's favorite restaurants.

Dressed in a simple, silky beige coat and white tee, Kardashian looked far younger than her 36 years — which is great considering her date is just 24! And it turns out there is a family connection: Kris Jenner's boyfriend Corey Gamble is Diddy's cousin.

More: 6 Things Scott Disick and Justin Bieber actually have in common

Of course, that is still three whole years older than her other rumored beau, Bieber, who is just 21. That hookup has apparently been going on for months, according to insiders.

"Justin started hanging out with Kourtney alone because she started going out more," a source told Us Weekly. "Remember, she never really went out before, so he's been showing her a good time.

"He actually goes over a lot to see her kids, and they love him."

More: Scott Disick reportedly dissed Justin Bieber at Chris Brown's holiday party

Another source told People, "He has had a huge ego boost from hooking up with Kourt. It's been going on for a few months. He is used to being swooned by young girls that have nothing else going on. Kourt is a hot mom with a career."

So how is Disick taking the news about Kardashian's flourishing love life? Not well.

"Of course it stings a bit that Kourt is hooking up with Bieber. But Scott also knows his place and that he doesn't have the right to have a fit about it," a source told People. "He is convinced Kourt is doing it to hurt him. And she succeeded."

Is Kardashian on the right track to getting over Disick or is she making a huge mistake with these much younger men? Sound off in the comments below.

4 Ways to save while shopping this holiday season

$

0

In the past, it seemed that only the wealthy daughters of doctors and lawyers were shopping online. Now, with technology at everyone’s fingertips, things are changing immensely. A large percentage of the traffic that websites get are from mobile devices — so people are stepping it up even more by using their smartphones to shop. It doesn’t take an insanely good job or copious amounts of money in your savings to shop online as there are multiple ways to do this while staying budget friendly.

Rebate websites

There are websites that will give you cash back just for shopping through their site. For example, if you bought an Xbox, you would get a percentage back just by shopping at Target through their site. Generally, these rebate websites have a minimum cash-out number that is either $5 or $10. If you do a good amount of online shopping this holiday season through a rebate site, you can earn hundreds of dollars back depending on where you are shopping. You are going to shop online anyway — you might as well enjoy getting paid to shop from some of the best and reputable rebate sites out there.

Coupon websites

Whether you are looking for online coupons or coupons in the paper, there are a multitude of deals out there that many do not take advantage of. Just by checking the website before you checkout of your favorite online store, you can save immense amounts of money. If you shop at Target frequently online and spend over $50, there is an ongoing coupon that takes off $5. This can be used for nearly every transaction, so it can save hundreds of dollars over the course of the year. Coupon websites can be frustrating at times, as some do not update as frequently as others, so some coupons might be expired. But, going through a couple dud coupons is worth it to save money at the end of the purchase.

Online auction sites

Those who have mastered online auctions can make quite a lot of money. The profit margin for those who buy and sell products won on penny auction websites is immense. These auction sites can be a steal, as some people just want to sell the item regardless of what price they get. Obviously, great deals come with some competition, but then there are those deals that you can see at the last minute and snatch away from other bidders. Often times these sites will have a minimum price that has to be hit — be careful not to go too far above the minimum, as many people want to at least get what the item is actually worth.

Wait it out

The newest pieces of technology and the hot items usually drive their prices up during the holidays. Waiting out the holiday season can make prices drop immensely, especially if a new piece of tech is coming out. Some people want to be up with the newest item, but others just need it to function properly and do not care what version it is. Waiting out smartphones can save hundreds of dollars, as many prices plummet for some of the older phones once a new Android or Apple phone comes out. If you have kids, then this might not be as easy, but it can be a good lesson to teach them on patience.

Shopping in a budget-friendly way this holiday season can leave your bank account full and your credit card bills small. It just takes a bit of searching to find some of the best deals available. Don’t be lazy and just waste your money.

Survivor's Kimmi Kappenberg tells hilarious story about Joe Anglim

When Kimmi first entered the reality television realm, it was in the heyday of Survivor nearly 15 years ago on the show's epic second season, Survivor: The Australian Outback. Although she was the fifth person booted from that season, her time on Survivor: Second Chance lasted much longer and she finished in sixth place.

She wasn't given much air time this season until the final episode when she made a big play to try and get Jeremy Collins, the eventual winner, voted out of the competition. That scheme sparked a crazy, historic Tribal Council in which two hidden immunity idols were played. As a result, all the ballots were nullified, which ultimately led to Kimmi's elimination. It was crazy stuff. During our red carpet interview with Kimmi at the finale, we asked her what it was like to be part of such a big Survivor moment.

More: Fans vow to stop watching after Joe Anglim voted off Survivor: Second Chance

During our conversation, she told us a fantastic story about fan-favorite Joe. Just like the rest of America, her own sons fell in love with the "golden boy." She said her boys would talk about wanting to watch more of Joe even though she was on the show herself. When she voted him off, they weren't happy about it at all.

Finally, we went way back to the infamous finger-waving chicken fight Kimmi had with Alicia Calaway during Season 2. Did Kimmi hear from Alicia after landing a spot on Second Chance? She answers that question and several others in our one-on-one red carpet interview.

Survivor's Spencer Bledsoe relives that painful final Tribal Council

Spencer, a self-described Survivor superfan, made his way to the final three. But when he got the chance to plead his case to the jury, he was perceived as a bully and didn't receive a single vote to win the game. Instead, Jeremy Collins had the biggest victory in the show's 31 seasons with a 10-0 landslide over Spencer and Tasha Fox.

Why would somebody as strategic as Spencer allow himself to sit against somebody like Jeremy at the final vote instead of somebody like Abi-Maria Gomes? That's one of the many questions we asked Spencer during our one-on-one conversation with him at the finale's red carpet.

More: Survivor's Abi-Maria Gomes is bitter and defensive in exclusive interview

Although the actual filming of the final Tribal Council happened months ago, the pain was still visible on Spencer's face as we talked on the red carpet. It's something he has been beating himself up over so much that he stopped watching the show after the episode in which Andrew Savage was blindsided. Our red carpet conversation about that moment brought us to discuss why Spencer has no immediate desire to play Survivor anytime soon.

More: Survivor's Andrew Savage reveals surprising game-ending mistake

But it wasn't all bad for him. Spencer really did show major growth moments during the Second Chance season. During the family visit, Spencer told his girlfriend he loved her for the very first time, which he says was his favorite element of the entire season.

Plus, being a strategic player, was he insulted that Kelly Wiglesworth would base her jury vote on having the final three pick a random number between 1-10? Get that answer and so much more by watching our red carpet interview.

Survivor: Kaoh Rong: What we know so far about the show's 32nd season

For the second time in Survivor's 32-season history, the show is returning to the familiar format that pits a trio of tribes against each other divided along the lines of brains, brawn and beauty. The first time we saw this twist came in Season 28's Survivor: Cagayan. The concept was incredibly well-received by viewers and critics alike, sparking one of the most enjoyable seasons the show has ever seen with an excellent cast.

More: Interview with Kass McQuillen of Survivor: Cagayan and Survivor: Second Chance

When Survivor: Kaoh Rong airs its first episode in February, it will be nearly a full year since the competition was filmed in Cambodia, which is the same location of Survivor: Second Chance. The most interesting thing to note is Kaoh Rong marks the first time CBS has ever aired an edition out of order. Yes, Kaoh Rong was filmed and wrapped before the Second Chance cast was even announced in May.

Host Jeff Probst says Kaoh Rong is "the most punishing season in Survivor history." Early spoilers indicate there are at least three medical evacuations.

Among the castaways competing for the $1 million prize are two notable names. The first is reality star Caleb Reynolds, who was on Big Brother 16 in the summer of 2016. He finished that season in fourth place. Caleb was among the few all-new castaways showcased during the brief season tease at the end of the Survivor: Second Chance finale. His time on Big Brother was not referenced. Instead, he was listed as an Army veteran.

"I may not have all the brains, but I do have some good looks," Caleb said in the season preview. "I am a man's man, but at the same time, country boys like to dress up, too. It's time for a country boy to show his true colors up in here."

Caleb is now the second Big Brother contestant selected for Survivor after Hayden Moss joined Season 27 (Survivor: Blood vs. Water).

Kaoh Rong will also feature Scot Pollard, who spent years in the NBA. From 1997-2008, he played for several teams, including the Pistons, Kings, Pacers, Cavs and Celtics.

"I used to play in the NBA for 11 years," he said in the season preview. "I ran around and pushed people, and I did it better than most people. My friends call me caveman, let alone my enemies. It's time for a caveman to win."

We were also given a brief glimpse of four other castaways. Here's what each of them said in the preview.

Debbie: "I've been an electronics expert, a captain, a bartender, a photonics manufacturing supervisor. I'm a chemist, caretaker to none and, between jobs, Red Lobster as a server."

Survivor's Tasha Fox shuts down 'hate' from Kass McQuillen & Jeff Varner

$

Here's a nugget of what Kass McQuillen had to say about her:

I wouldn't even give Tasha the honor of being called a villain. She is just an angry, bitter person. There's a difference between being a fun villain who is like, 'Ha-ha, that's fun. I'm causing trouble,' and being a hate-fueled, vengeful person... I think there's a difference between being a villain and being a genuinely nasty, mean person. Tasha has a chip on her shoulder that's the size of a redwood tree. It's still there and it's sad.

More: Survivor's Kass McQuillen disses "hate-fueled" Tasha Fox

Here's a sampling of what Jeff Varner had to say:

She uses Jesus as a scapegoat to justify her evil in this game. I just have such a fundamental problem with that... for her to be a Christian and to talk her big Christian talk and then go out there to use God as a scapegoat, I don't know. Right now, Tasha is a big hypocrite to me. I really want this to be an experience that helps her not be so much.

9 Funny reasons my son thinks I grew up in prehistoric times

$
0
0

“No Nickelodeon?” he replied, both shocked and alarmed. “I feel bad for you.”

But he hadn’t heard the worst of it. I then shared with him all the other simple pleasures that I grew up without.

1. No computer

Yep, up until college, I don’t think I ever even used a computer. When I was in college, I had one class that required us to use the computer lab. For the most part, all of my work through school was done on a good old-fashioned typewriter. If I needed more than one copy of a report, I had to use blue carbon paper.

2. No Internet

“No way!” said my son. “How did you do your school work?” I explained that back in my day, we did our school reports using encyclopedias. These were large printed books that had information on all sorts of topics. I was fortunate because my parents purchased a set of encyclopedias in our house, although sometimes I did have to go to the library to get more information. If I asked my parents a question and they didn’t know the answer, they would have to admit they had no clue, rather than slyly run to the computer and search Google for the information.

3. No iPod

I did have an 8-track tape player, and then a personal cassette player — also known as a Walkman. I could leave the house and go for a walk while listening to about 20 songs as opposed to the 200-plus songs that my son currently has on his iPod. If I liked a song on the radio and wanted to own it, I had to purchase the whole album rather than download just the one song.

4. No cell phone

When I left the house in the morning, I said goodbye to my parents, and then there was no communication until I returned home. No texts throughout the day. No detailed itinerary of my plans after school. Just a loose promise that I wouldn't do anything I shouldn’t and that I would be home for dinner.

5. Only five channels of television

This one just made him feel sorry for me. Not only was there no Nickelodeon, but there were also only five channels total. We had ABC, NBC, CBS, WPIX and PBS. WPIX only showed the news and reruns of old shows. PBS had baby shows plus Masterpiece Theatre, which left three channels of original programming, until FOX debuted in 1986. My son was forlorn. How could we only have three channels? Then, I added in that sometimes the channels did not even come through — we would have static and have to adjust the picture with manual antennas, aka rabbit ears. Without remote controls, we had to get up from the couch to change the channel. I might as well have told him I lived in a cave and ate rocks.

6. No ESPN

After I told my son about the television channels, he realized that I hadn’t mentioned ESPN. More sad news: Sometimes the games you wanted to watch were not on television. There were usually two televised football games on Sunday and one on Monday night. Only some baseball games were on TV. “You lived a life without RedZone,” cried my son. “That is just so sad!”

7. No DVR

I guess this isn’t so bad — because there were only three channels, you couldn’t miss as many shows as you could now without a recorder or on-demand option. Back in long-ago land, people actually watched TV shows at the time that they were on. If you missed the show, it was lost until summer when the three channels ran reruns — and you actually had to watch the commercials. The fast-forward button had not been invented yet.

8. But we did have video games

“Thank goodness!” my son exclaimed. “At least you had video games so you didn’t die of boredom from no TV or computer.” I'm not sure he would have thought these games were too great compared to the graphics on his Xbox. Madden NFL 15 looks like actual football players are engaged in a game on the television screen. In comparison, I had Pong — two sticks hitting a ball back and forth as if engaged in a game of table tennis. As ridiculous as this sounds, I remember it actually being a lot of fun.

9. No kale — wait, that's a good thing

The only veggies my mom ever served came out of a can. She called them different things — peas, string beans and lima beans — but, in the end, they were all just variations of mushy, green, yucky stuff. The word "salad" was synonymous with iceberg lettuce. Maybe my mom threw in some carrots and cucumbers, but not always. Romaine, kale, endive, edamame — these foods just did not exist when I was a kid. This one, my son actually thought made me lucky. It didn’t make up for the no ESPN or Google, but at least there was one benefit to growing up in olden times: less green, yucky food.

Then again, he never ate a lima bean. Blech!

7 Things AHS: Hotel could have in store for The Countess if she survives

If (and, let's be honest, when) she survives this thing with Iris and Liz Taylor, she has a lot of other matters we hope the show explores.

More: Test your American Horror Story knowledge with our killer quiz

1. Revealing more about Bartholomew

So far we've only seen the fetus hidden in the shadows, but what exactly does The Countess (Lady Gaga) expect to happen with him? Is she just going to keep her immortal premie forever? There is still a lot of light that needs to be shed on that situation.

2. Deciding the future of Alex

Right now it seems that John and Alex are very much on their way to living happily ever after as a super-messed-up family. But we can't imagine The Countess will just let her claws out of Alex and Holden so easily.

3. Ending her relationship with James March

She already announced that she never wants to see him again, but he is part of the hotel, so unless she's going to leave The Cortez, she's kind of stuck with him. It will be interesting to see if and how they officially call it quits for good.

More: AHS: Hotel blurs the lines between Lady Gaga and Stefani Germanotta

4. Dealing with Ramona

Right now Ramona's very hungry and probably very annoyed with all those little infested children. We have yet to really see Ramona and The Countess come face to face and it's a scene I'm personally hoping is on its way.

5. Finding her love story with Donovan

Is it bad that I'm still secretly rooting for The Countess and Donovan to make it? They could have the most messed-up but genuine love story in the history of television. I kind of see this great Romeo and Juliet ending for them, giving up immortality in one another's arms. But, hey, I'm a hopeless romantic like that.

6. Reconciling with Liz Taylor

This goes back to my ideas of hopeless romanticism, but I think there is the potential there for The Countess and Liz Taylor to call a truce after her spray of bullets. They are, after all, so much fun to watch together.

More: 11 Ways AHS: Hotel exceeded even the highest expectations

7. Gaining Will Drake's fortunate

Or losing it, as the case may be. It seems to me that there is no way The Countess' master plan for wealth is going to work out as smoothly as she envisioned. Plus, now that we know Will Drake is a ghost, it will be interesting to see how he tries to foil her plans.

What other plans do you think AHS: Hotel has in store for The Countess?

To achieve that "coolness" factor for your baby boy's name, it's best to steer clear of the most popular baby name lists. We're veering from that beaten path to bring you some names that feel a bit more original. One of the easiest ways to do that is to avoid baby boy names with the long vowel sounds, particularly the long A.

These days, the most popular baby girl names are vintage feminine names, like Sophia, Chloe and Emily. Survivor's Kelley Wentworth reveals what TV didn't show

The first time Kelley played on Survivor: San Juan del Sur, she competed with her father. Her time was cut very short as she was voted out early in the game. She didn't even make the jury.

On Survivor: Second Chance, her experience was much different. Kelley emerged from the shadows and owned multiple huge moments that triggered incredible blindsides, including her idol play that took out Andrew Savage. How awesome was that? Host Jeff Probst labeled her as one of this season's strongest players based on her numerous memorable strategic maneuvers.

More: Survivor's Kelley Wentworth sparks big idol blindside against Andrew Savage

Perceived as a big threat and on the outside of an alliance, Kelley was snuffed out in fourth place. Not only did she make it that deep into the game, but she was able to bring her father back out to the show for the emotional family visit episode.

In the end, she voted for Jeremy to win it all, but why him instead of Spencer Bledsoe? Why didn't she even consider voting for Tasha Fox to win? What else didn't we see on TV that Kelley wishes would've made it on the air? Would she want to play the game again? Plus, who smelled the worst out of anybody on the show? How did she react to that question submitted by one of our readers? We asked her all that and more during our one-on-one red carpet interview at the Survivor: Second Chance finale.

7 Strategies to keep dust under control in your house

$

0

What if we told you that there are seven really simple things you can do that will help keep the levels of dust in your home far lower than they currently are? While this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t clean your home on a routine basis, it does mean that you won’t need three boxes of dusting pads to get through your home and eliminate all the excess dust.

1. Keep closets organized

Let’s be honest — closets are the Holy Grail for dust as they are always full of fabric fibers from clothing, towels and other things that you have stored away in your closet. Just think, each time you open that messy and cluttered closet, you are sending all this dust that has built up back into the rest of your house. The remedy for this is incredibly simple. Box up anything that is on the shelves in your closets and ensure that they are labeled with their contents, either on the side of the box or on an index card taped to the box. Also, putting your clothing that you are not wearing this season into clear garment bags will also help to cut down on dust without obstructing your sight of what is in the bag.

2. Wash your bedding once a week

Dust bunnies multiply like crazy when you don’t keep your bedding clean. By washing your bedding every week, you will be able to decrease the amount of fabric fibers and dead skin within your sheets, which decreases the amount of dust in your home overall. You should also beat some of the dust from your pillows and vacuum off your mattress to get even more dust out of your bed.

3. Proper cleaning supplies

When you clean, it is important to ensure that you are using the best supplies for the job. This means avoiding anything that will kick more dust into the air and allow it to settle elsewhere in the home. Some supplies you should avoid include dry rags, feather dusters and brooms. The best supplies to use include oil and wax sprays on dry rags or simply dampening the rag with a little water, depending on the surface. Invest in a new vacuum that will properly trap dust as you clean and cleaning products that will trap dust through static electricity.

4. Ways to clean the air

One of the easiest ways to clean the air while you clean the rest of your home is to turn your thermostat to "fan on," which will help to prevent dust from flying around while you sweep and vacuum. This setting isn’t meant for long term use and will need to be turned back to your usual settings to avoid damaging your heating and cooling system. Leave the blower going for up to 15 minutes after you are finished cleaning, before changing it back to its normal settings.

5. Rugs and cushions

Things such as rugs, cushions and even throw blankets collect lots of dust every day. This is even more so when they are not in constant use. So it is important to take anything soft and squishy outside and beat it with a bat or broom to properly remove as much dust as possible. Not only will this ensure that you are getting dust out of your home, but will also help to prevent more dust from flying into the air.

6. Filtration systems

There are many things people don’t think about when they clean the house for the week, and the filtration system for your heating and cooling is the No. 1 thing overlooked. Filters should be replaced once a month — however, you should also try to clean out the vents once a week as well. It can also help to upgrade your filters to allow them to be cleaned by hand. Rather than replacing them, you can simply wash them.

7. Vacuuming

Some people know they should probably replace their vacuum cleaner about every five to 10 years depending on the amount of use it gets. Investing in a new vacuum can also help you lower the amount of dust in your home, as there are many that offer air filtration, which will pull dust from the air as you clean. These vacuums are generally a little on the pricier side, but will offer much more efficiency than the cheaper varieties that are out there.

How to get ready for holiday entertaining

The main character could rummage through the old attic in the mansion where the story takes place and find silver, crystal, mirrors, pheasant taxidermy. Anything she needed to decorate I could just make appear. Mrs. Emily was in charge of the food preparation, and she prepared things ahead of time that could be stored in the refrigerator until serving time. The girls, Sabine and Joy, named the dishes and labeled them on cards, keeping with a theme of "birds of a feather." It was fun, and I can still imagine the decorations and food planning which is why I try to employ some of those same techniques off the page.

It is handy to have items on hand from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day to serve drop-in guests. The house is decorated, people are in town visiting relatives — it is the perfect time to have impromptu gatherings and impress with festive cocktails and nibbles. My favorite drinks are those that can be stored and combined in a large pitcher in no time at all.

Mrs. Emily's Scarlet Spoonbill Punch

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rosé wine, chilled
  • 2 cups ginger ale, chilled
  • 1 cup cranberry juice cocktail, chilled

Directions:

  1. Pour all ingredients over an ice block in punch bowl and enjoy a delicious treat, or combine everything in a large, clear pitcher.
  2. Alternative serving idea: Freeze a 1/2 bag of fresh cranberries and pour into the bottom of large crystal pitcher. Pour the punch mixture over the frozen cranberries.

Green grape cheese bites — the perfect nibbles for a wine-based drink

Ingredients:

  • 1 bunch seedless green grapes
  • 4 ounces crumbled blue cheese
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Directions:

  1. Wash grapes and allow them to dry completely.
  2. Cream together the crumbled blue cheese and cream cheese.
  3. Separate the grapes.
  4. Carefully press the cheese mixture around each individual grape.
  5. Roll each grape in the chopped nuts.
  6. Refrigerate the bites in a covered container until time it's to serve.

These bites are great with cocktails or wine served with crackers.

Guests will enjoy these unique treats, and they can be kept handy with no trouble at all. However, the decorations will not be as easy as my imagined party!

5 Signs your new crush isn't that into you

$

0

1. He gives you the runaround

He seems like he’s about to make plans with you, but when it comes down to it, he won’t commit. Worse, he's a master at making you feel guilty when things don't work out. That passive, “someone fell asleep,” text politely places blame on you even though he took two hours of precious evening-hang-out time with irrelevant small talk about how busy his week has been.

2. He gives you just enough to keep you interested

After said two hours of small talk, he gives you just enough of a flirt to keep you guessing. Right when you assumed you were just going to be friends and talk about the weather, he sends the cryptic water emoji. Was that supposed to be sweat or some other naughty bodily fluid?

3. Excuses, excuses, excuses

He’s tired. He’s got an early meeting. His place is a mess. It doesn’t really matter what it is, if a guy wants to hang, it’ll happen. This is a hard rule to accept, because sometimes there are legitimate excuses. You can confidently wager that if this happens over and over again, it’s not just a string of bad timing, it’s probably intentional that he’s not making solid plans.

4. He pops up “conveniently”

Just when you started accepting dates from other suitors, he texts you with a, “thinking about you,” winky-face message. He always seems to sense when you are moving on and comes back to give you just enough to keep the connection warm. He knows you are losing interest, so he tries slightly harder than usual. Beware of the guy who does just enough but never really satisfies.

5. He’s confusing — his behavior and his words don’t match up

He says he wants to hang out, but you haven’t seen him in a month. When you just don’t get it, most likely, there’s nothing to get. He’s either not interested, likes playing games, has other options or isn’t savvy enough to be with you. All of those options are less than appealing when deciding who you want to spend your time on. We all deserve better.

Here’s what to do about it

  • If you’re not losing sleep over it, feel free to respond to his text messages and keep the kindling lit.
  • Maybe you’ll get some good loving somewhere down the road, especially as the nights get longer and your bed gets colder.
  • Lose all expectation of this being a viable option and perhaps you can get excited if bestowed with good sex just one more time.
  • Don’t initiate any text messages, otherwise you’ll be disappointed if you come up empty-handed.

If you’re sweating him and declining other opportunities in the hopes he’ll come around, it’s probably best to stop all communications. Respectfully decline any offers he does make. Keep the conversation polite but short. Never have the last word; let his message be the last one and let it linger. Don’t feel bad if you stop talking to him. You don’t owe any explanation — unless you want to be up front. Find somebody who’s more excited about the prospect of being with you and keep it moving.

Customer claims Tim Hortons employee threw coffee and Timbits

A messy situation is unfolding for a Tim Hortons in Michigan, where an employee caught on video Oct. 27 appears to be throwing coffee and Timbits — or as the Americans down there refer to them, "doughnut holes" — at a customer. The customer also claims that after the employee threw scalding coffee at him, he shouted racial slurs out the drive-in window (there's no audio in the video, but if this is true, I'm on the customer's side here).

More: Homemade fried pumpkin doughnut drops

In a statement released this week by Tim Hortons, they do acknowledge that they are “aware of the incident” and add that “the franchisee has taken the appropriate steps to address the matter.” What those steps may be, I have no idea.

The situation has escalated, as these types of fast-food fiascos generally do, as one of the customers is now pursuing legal action. "It's a felonious assault. He threw hot coffee. It struck him in the face. Not happy about it. No one should have coffee thrown on their face,” says lawyer Majed Moughni, who spoke to local TV station WDIV.

More: 15 Things Homer Simpson taught us about doughnuts

But the customer wasn’t entirely on good behaviour here, admitting to his attorney that he did step the fight up a notch, returning to throw coffee back at the drive-through window and hurl spit in his general direction.

“Charge my client with assault — fine. It’s a misdemeanour,” Moughni added. “But charge the real criminal in this case with felonious assault.”

And what set the Timmies worker off in the first place? The customer claims that he asked his co-worker to chuck out an old cup of Tim’s he had in the car, but she refused to do so. That’s when everything hit the fan, as the 19-year-old male allegedly defended his co-worker's honour by tossing Timbits and coffee at him.

Tim Hortons is taking steps to assure us that this kind of situation doesn't happen to anyone else when they're trying to get their coffee fix. “Guest safety is of paramount concern to Tim Hortons," they said in their statement.

The lesson here, if any? If you ever catch yourself thinking, "Hey, I'm going to throw something at this person while on camera" and your name's not Florida Woman, you should probably just simmer down.

Yolanda Foster calls out Taylor Armstrong for her 'ignorance'

Foster took to Bravo's blog following The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills this week, which showed her co-stars, particularly Taylor Armstrong and Kyle Richards, expressing doubt about Foster's illness, which she has been struggling with for years.

More: Yolanda Foster makes an emotional pledge to her children (PHOTO)

"I think that if Yolanda's doing all these treatments for Lyme disease, and nothing's working, she has to be open-minded to what else it could be," Richards told the camera.

The ladies later clarified that they don't doubt Foster is sick, but they do doubt her diagnosis.

"I was asking if she had done so or if she was only focused on the Lyme disease path," Armstrong explained in another blog following RHOBH Season 6, Episode 3. "I know that she is ill. I was not questioning that, and I wasn't questioning Yolanda. I was merely suggesting that since all the Lyme disease treatments were not helping her, maybe she and her doctors should consider other possibilities."

But just because Armstrong and Richards have clarified doesn't mean Foster is letting them off the hook for their uneducated remarks.

More: 9 Crazy rumors about Yolanda and David Foster's divorce

"What I saw on the show tonight was just that: IGNORANCE. Maybe it should anger me, but instead it makes me want to fight harder and speak louder for those whose voices can't be heard," Foster wrote. "Those of you who have experienced chronic illness, you know what I'm talking about. What defines suffering? You will never hear someone who's walked in my shoes speak the way Taylor spoke on tonight's episode. I truly hope she never has to experience the journey she questions me for sharing."

She continued, "There are many times during this journey I've wondered why I wasn't given more to work with. Why Lyme? Why not a diagnosis with textbook answers and a cure? I will not apologize or make excuses for having an illness that is difficult for others to comprehend. What others say about me is not my problem."

Instead, Foster is looking to the future.

"Having made great strides in the past six months, I remain hopeful and determined for a healthy future with love, light, and gratitude in my heart, because I am beyond blessed after all..."

Do you think Armstrong and Richards are completely out of line, or were their comments simply misconstrued?
