Kate Middleton cover outrage: Would we care if it were Kim K?

A stateside magazine's Kate Middleton cover is causing a whole lot of ruckus across the globe. Think a little ill-intentioned Photoshop never hurt anybody? Perhaps you've underestimated the people's love for their royals!

Kate Middleton cover

The latest Kate Middleton cover image depicts the beautiful Duchess in a most unflattering light -- specifically in the dental hygiene department! U.S. based publication The New Republic has done a disservice to the freshly minted royal, ultimately causing those abroad to overestimate how much we Americans care for our own socialites.

The magazine's latest issue depicts Kate Middleton with misaligned, yellow, decaying teeth alongside the headline "Something's Rotten: The Last Days of Britain." View the horror here!

Fans of Prince William's wife have lit up the Internet in fury over the image, calling the cover deplorable and asking how we'd feel if the shoe were on the other foot.

Queen humiliates Kate -- It's a curtsey controversy! >>

Proving Kim Kardashian's image has permeated pop culture across the globe, one commenter upset by the Kate Middleton cover wrote to the Daily Mail:

"Not cool. I am not an imperialist , but she seems to be a genuine person. She is young, beautiful, and privileged. Apparently grave sins to many people. Yet I wonder if these are the same critics who keep up on the Kardashians, or whatever flavour of the month Hollywood squirts out. She is a person who did not deserve this low blow. Shame on them. I wouldn’t even think to read anything from them ever again."

The publisher of the Kate Middleton cover embroiled in controversy has yet to comment on the uproar.

Questionable portrayals of the Duchess of Cambridge appear to be on the rise, as the 30-year-old was also entangled in a television ad brouhaha just weeks ago.

Would you care if Kim Kardashian's teeth were Photoshopped like the Kate Middleton cover?

Parenting Guru: The benefits of emotion coaching

You can teach your children how to master their frustrations at a very early age, says Kimberley Clayton Blaine, a Los Angeles-based national parenting expert. Blaine, a licensed family and child therapist who specializes in working with young children, says kids who aren’t able to freely express themselves may grow up with issues that can prevent them from having healthy relationships and successful careers. To avoid such issues, she advises parents to foster emotional intelligence through emotion coaching. Blaine practices emotion coaching with her kids, ages 5 and 7, and offers insight to the technique below.

Why kids need to express their feelings

You can teach your children how to master their frustrations at a very early age, says Kimberley Clayton Blaine, a Los Angeles-based national parenting expert. Blaine, a licensed family and child therapist who specializes in working with young children, says kids who aren’t able to freely express themselves may grow up with issues that can prevent them from having healthy relationships and successful careers. To avoid such issues, she advises parents to foster emotional intelligence through emotion coaching. Blaine practices emotion coaching with her kids, ages 5 and 7, and offers insight to the technique below.

How can your book, The Go-To Mom’s Parents’ Guide to Emotion Coaching Young Children help parents?

Kimberley Clayton Blaine: Parents learn how to teach their kids to regulate their emotions so they can recognize and express their various feelings appropriately. The idea is to help your child understand and communicate his feelings according to his developmental abilities. It’s particularly important to help him express his feelings when they’re overwhelming.

You want to help your child learn about social behavior and the world around him by being a guide and having a deep understanding of your child. Emotion coaching is a way of life and it will strengthen your relationship with your child and teach him how to be responsible, adaptable and how to relate well with his peers. Your kids will learn the importance and impact of their own emotions and how they can identify and label their feelings and use them for their benefit.

Give bribes and charts the boot

What do you think parents of young kids need help with today?

Blaine: Despite good intentions, today’s parents still rely on what is familiar and comfortable, which means they engage in some sort of outdated parenting techniques used by their parents or in some cases, in opposition to their parents. Hitting, yelling and threatening are outmoded theories of child rearing. They’re things we don’t even do with our pets, so why would anyone believe they’re OK to do to our children? Behavior charts, bribes and rewards, though more benign, are not the answer either.

The meaning of “discipline” is to guide or teach. When we punish our children we often leave out the guidance, which means we don’t get the results we want.

Emotion coaching is a humane and loving way of disciplining your child. It’s logical and gentle as opposed to old-fashioned aggressive discipline that isn’t effective and doesn’t feel good to anyone.

Get past your issues

How can parents use the technique emotion coaching for feel-good and effective disciplining?

Blaine: Establish a healthy line of communication with your child early. Communicate your thoughts and feelings with her often.

"Don’t let your issues affect how you discipline."

Don’t let your issues affect how you discipline. Know your hot buttons so you don’t react impulsively. It’s never productive or healthy to give into your anger and take it out on your children. Use encouragement, instead of “Don’t do this,” or “Because I said so.” Children love to please parents and if they know you’re happy, they’ll work harder to do the good behavior next time.

More emotion coaching tips

  • Take “thinking time” and ask your child to ponder what she can do differently so she can be an active part of her discipline.
  • Suggest a good behavior in place of a bad one. For example, if you tell your son there’s no running inside, follow up with saying he can run and jump all he wants outside and offer to go out and play with him.
  • Take about your feelings. For example, explain that their fighting makes you sad so they understand the effect their behavior has on others, which in turn makes them more likely to react differently in the future.
  • Acknowledge and validate her feelings while setting limits. Let her know you’re not just giving out a punishment — you realize that she’s experiencing emotions and you understand.

How to make more friends at work

Having a full-time job often means spending more time with your co-workers than with your friends and significant other. Rather than lament your lack of a social life or the fact you’re too tired to do much after a long day, build better bonds with the people you share office space with. It might seem like a daunting task but making friends at work can be easier than you think.
Friends eating dinner

Having a full-time job often means spending more time with your co-workers than with your friends and significant other.

Build office friendships

Rather than lament your lack of a social life or the fact you’re too tired to do much after a long day, build better bonds with the people you share office space with. It might seem like a daunting task but making friends at work can be easier than you think.

Start a team or club

One of the best ways to get people at work to mingle and get to know each other better is to create a way for them to be together outside of work – e.g. a sports team or club. Whether it’s baseball , touch football, book club or cooking club , there’s bound to be a common interest among co-workers. Ask around or take a poll about what people would be interested in and then make it happen.

Real women speak: “I didn’t start a club, but one of my co-workers started a weekend baseball league and we play every Sunday. I’m horrible at baseball but it’s been a great way to get to know the other people in my office.” Sarah, 39, Boulder, Colorado

cocktailOrganize after-work drinks

Especially now that it’s warm out , getting people out for a pint or cocktail after work shouldn’t be too hard. It’s even more ideal if there’s someplace close by you can all walk to. Being outside the confines of the office makes it much easier to loosen up and get to know the people you work with.

Real women speak: “I’m really shy so I had a hard time getting to know people in my office, but when someone started a weekly drinks meet-up every Friday at the pub around the corner from us, I realized I worked with some really great people. It’s been a year and we still meet up every Friday!” Briony, 28, Newark, New Jersey

Talk about things other than work

Talking about work while at the office makes sense – you’re at the office, but it will never allow for closer bonds or even finding out more about your co-workers. Make a point to talk about yourself, offer anecdotes about your life and ask co-workers questions about their lives as a way to create a connection. Chances are if you open up, they will too.

Real women speak: “When I go out for lunch with the other girls in my office, I try not to talk about work. We will if there’s something pressing but otherwise we talk about our families, our boyfriends and other non-work stuff that’s a lot more fun!” Sandi, 24, Jacksonville, Florida

In a pickle: How to make a flavorless dish flavorful

$

0
Sometimes when it comes time to put dinner on the table, it's just not that flavorful. Whether we forgot to salt it or thought it didn't need anything, we've all ended up with a bland dish now and again. But before serving it to your family, try these quick fixes to inject a good dose of flavor into any meal.

Woman cooking with salt

Often something as simple as a sprinkling of salt or a squeeze of lemon can uplift any dish, even those that already pack plenty of punch. At times it's a job for something a little stronger like hot sauce. Here are a few easy ways to turn dinner from plain to pleasant.

Check out these ideas for ways to boost flavor >>

Salt

The easiest, and often most effective, way to enhance the flavors of any dish is to add salt. Lightly sprinkle it on everything from soup to salad and from stew to steak. Even desserts can benefit from a dash of salt to counteract the sweet.

Citrus

Another great ingredient to have in your repertoire is fresh citrus juice, especially lemon and lime . A slightly unripe avocado is immediately perked up with a splash of lime juice, while that plain chicken breast or fish fillet can be transformed by a lemon wedge.

Vinegar

Often when a dish falls flat, it is simply screaming for more acid to balance out its flavors. Vinegar is the perfect ingredient to liven up an array of dishes. From balsamic to apple cider vinegar and from white wine to Champagne vinegar, they offer a variety of flavors to complement any number of dishes. Salads, soups, sandwiches, roast vegetables and meat can all benefit from a light drizzle of vinegar.

thymeHerbs

Herbs, both fresh and dried, act as more than just a garnish — they play an important part in finishing a dish and add great flavor. Add chopped fresh basil or parsley to tomato sauce, chopped cilantro to tacos or dried oregano to pizza. There's not a savory dish out there that can't be dressed up with the appropriate herb.

Butter

Used in moderation, butter can work wonders on a boring dish by adding rich flavor to mashed potatoes and a luscious taste to steak. We've all used it to bring out the flavor in corn on the cob, so why not add a pat to plain steamed vegetables or rice that needs revving up.

Cheese

Sometimes a little cheese goes a long way. Grated Parmesan will amp up any Italian dish, while feta can turn a boring salad into an exciting international dinner. Dress up an under-seasoned burger with a slice of cheese and make any sandwich more exciting.

Condiments

Condiments like mustard and ketchup aren't just for putting on your burgers and hot dogs. They can also help to add flavor and surprising depth to your meal. You can put them right on the food , or you can stir them into a sauce or stew for a flavor boost.

Hot sauce

When your dish needs heavy duty help, it's time to bring in the big guns. Hot sauce will bring any dish alive and make your taste buds dance. Tabasco, Frank's Red Hot, and Sriracha all have distinct flavors that are great in different dishes.

More ideas

Other ingredients you may not think of that can add flavor to any meal include bacon, fish sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Chocolate can give depth to chilies and stews, while honey might add that touch of sweetness that a dish is looking for.

Sad dog in shelter

We've all been there. You're cruising the local shelter to help a friend pick out the perfect pet. Then, you see an adorable puppy giving you those irresistible take-me-home eyes, and you just have to have him.

How much is that doggy in the window?

Adopting a pet means much more than falling in love with a cute puppy or kitten. You're signing up for a long-term commitment. Before you take a life-changing leap into pet parenthood, make sure you know exactly what to look for when adopting a pet.

Behavior

What behaviors would you like your pet to exhibit around others? Think about any friends or family members who have pets. Are there any that you dread being around and why? Some behaviors can be taught while others are simply part of the pet's natural instincts. Jot down a list of behavior ideals and bring them with you to the shelter. If you find a pet that interests you, be sure to discuss your list with the person in charge to make sure you and your pet are a perfect match.

Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan's top dog training tips >>

Personality

Are you a social butterfly? A fitness guru? A bookworm? Think about your lifestyle and the people in it when looking for a pet. A shy and skittish pet wouldn't quite fit in a house full of people. A cat might not make the best running partner and a high-energy dog would rather spend the day outdoors than curled up with a good book. Pay close attention to the actions and traits exhibited by your potential pet. Bookworms might look for a cuddly and lovable pet, athletic-minded owners might try seeing how the pet responds to a game of fetch. Socialites should bring a small entourage to see how the pet reacts in a social setting.

Care requirements

What your pet needs to live a healthy and fruitful life should include a mix of what you can handle and what you're willing to handle. All things considered, older pets and certain breeds require owners with a healthy wallet to pay for proper care and vet bills to sustain a proper quality of life. If you suffer from allergies, do your research to find "hypoallergenic" breeds like Yorkies that have human-like hair instead of fur and promote less dander-derived allergens. Ask yourself how much time you have in the day to devote to grooming and exercise. Breeds like pugs and chihuahuas tend to find happiness with long naps and brief walks while high-energy working breeds like labs and golden retrievers must exert energy regularly.

Intuition

Perhaps the most important thing to look for — "the feeling." A feeling that no one can explain or know other than you and your new pet. That feeling when your gut tells you, "This is the pet for me." If you feel an instant connection, beyond cuteness or any other superficial attributes, everything else goes out the window. Spend special one-on-one time with every pet you might be interested in. When the right one comes along, you'll just know.

Must-read: Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

$

One of our favorite books of last year was Deborah Harkness’ debut novel, A Discovery of Witches, which we introduced here as a must read when it came out in paperback in January. The only thing we didn’t love about A Discovery of Witches was having to wait to find out what happened next, but luckily we now have the second book in the trilogy: Shadow of Night.

Shadow of Night

Deborah Harkness' debut novel, A Discovery of Witches, thrilled readers right up until the cliffhanger ending. In Shadow of Night, the second book in the trilogy, Harkness picks up in the lives of her main characters — scholar-witch Diana Bishop and geneticist-vampire Matthew Clairmont — precisely where we left them in A Discovery of Witches. In an effort to find witches who are able to help Diana learn to control her powers , Diana and Matthew must travel into the past — specifically, into Matthew's past in Elizabethan London.

For a student of alchemical history such as Diana, Matthew's past is a fascinating place, particularly once she learns of his association with the infamous School of Night, a group of men including Sir Walter Raleigh, Christopher Marlowe and others who studied science and philosophy, including alchemy. Perhaps even more interesting than meeting Raleigh, Marlowe and the rest of the School of Night, though, is the opportunity for Diana to meet Matthew's father, a vampire who has already been killed in Diana's own time. As with his mother, Diana's relationship with Matthew's father gets off to a rough start, but before long she is extremely grateful for the chance to have met him.

Traveling to the past is not all fun and games, however. Diana must be ever-vigilant in her attempts to blend in with a world four centuries removed from the one she is familiar with. In the late 16th century, Diana doesn't know how to dress or how to speak, and there is a very real threat that she will be denounced as — irony of ironies — a witch and burned at the stake.

Fans of A Discovery of Witches will be thrilled with this latest offering from Deborah Harkness. Often the second book in a trilogy serves more as a connection between the first and last books than as something that advances the story in its own right. Such is not the case with Shadow of Night. Instead, readers are thrown straight back into the drama of Diana and Matthew's lives as they try to ensure a future for themselves in a way that will both thrill and delight.

Which celebrity would you let babysit?

Imagine this... you need a nanny or babysitter and you get to pick from a pool of major celebrities! Who would you pick to watch your kids? Here are our top picks and why we'd happily let them change our newborn's diaper, make lunch for our kiddos and sing our little ones to sleep. Now, the question is, do we still have to pay them?

Carrie Underwood

With her sweet disposition and oh so Southern ways, we would jump at the chance to have Carrie Underwood babysit our kids! Even though she and husband Mike Fisher don't have children of their own yet , we're certain that Carrie would be prime babysitter material and can imagine that our kids would pick up a "Yes, ma'am," here or there while they were in her care. A mom can only dream!

Lady Gaga

Stick with us for a minute on this one, OK? Yes, you may come home to your children wearing outfits made of tinfoil, random kitchen appliances and every DVD in your closet, but we're certain that if you had Lady Gaga babysit your kids, you'd also come home to children who had a boost in self-confidence. Lady Gaga's steadfast mission to make every child feel like they can be themselves puts her at the top of our celebrity babysitter wishlist.

Katie Holmes

It wasn't long ago that Katie Holmes could have been on our list of celebrities that we would not let babysit our kids, but since her split from husband, Tom Cruise, all in the name of doing what's best for her daughter, Suri, we'd happily let Katie watch our children. Any mom, celebrity or not, who puts what's best for her kids above all else makes her golden in our books — we'd even let her bring Suri along while she worked!

Kids should come first in any divorce... even when it comes to celebrities >>

Sally Field

If you're looking for a grandmother-like babysitter for your children, look no further than celebrity Sally Field. Not only will she have fun stories that will have your kids' eyes wide with delight and wonder, but we love Sally's no-nonsense style, meaning that we'll come home to toys put away properly and kids with their teeth brushed and pajamas on. Plus, Sally Field is playing Aunt May in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man, scoring her instant points with your superhero-obsessed son.

Brad Pitt

Get your mind out of the gutter! We don't want Brad Pitt to babysit our kids because he's gorgeous. Well, that's not the only reason, at least! As the dad to six children, Brad would make the perfect live-in nanny, er, babysitter. There's no doubt that he knows his way around being a dad and we're pretty sure that he has fun while doing it. And, don't you have some housework that needs to be done while you're gone? Like washing the dishes... shirtless?

Frizz-fighting tips for summer

Ah, summer. The days are long, the nights are hot -- and our hair is a frizzy mess. To help avoid having to deal with a tangle of tresses this season, we put together some simple tips for keeping your locks smooth and manageable.

Ouidad Climate Control Defrizzing ShampooSwitch to moisturizing products

Quick tip: Take a wide-tooth comb with you into the shower and comb the conditioner through to better activate the product and allow it to work its moisturizing magic.

First things first; start your fight against frizz with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. These products will help detangle, boost hair hydration and act as your first step to smoother summer hair. Try Ouidad Climate Control Defrizzing Shampoo and Conditioner .

Living Proof No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner , which revitalizes dry, damaged hair while blocking humidity so hair looks healthy, not full of frizz.</p>
</div>
<div class=

Dry right

If you rub or twist your hair with a towel post-shower, it’s time to stop. The friction will create instant-frizz, not to mention tangles. Blot hair dry instead by pressing the towel around sections of your hair to get the water out. It’s also important to note that partially blow drying hair is another no-no if you want to avoid frizz. Either do your whole head or skip the blow dryer all together.

got2B Glossy Anti-Frizz Shine SerumAdd some shine

A shine-inducing serum will help hair look less frizzy, while also creating a sleek finish. Try got2b Glossy Anti-Frizz Shine Serum to tame frizz and fly-aways. Not only is hair more manageable, it’s shiny and glossy, too.

Other frizz-fighting tips

  • Get a trim every six to eight weeks. Split ends can enhance frizz.
  • Try a hair mask or deep conditioning treatment once a week.
  • Try a microfiber towel. They’re known to produce less frizz-causing friction.
  • Use a heat-protecting spray when heat styling to avoid cuticle damage, which can increase frizz.

Is Natalie Morales "snubbed enough" to leave Today?

$
0

It was all smiles as Savannah Guthrie started the week in her new role as Today co-host alongside Matt Lauer. But Ann Curry apparently didn't take the-behind-the-scenes drama with her when she was ousted from the plum co-host gig.

Natalie Morales snubbed

A name we didn't hear a lot during the whole Ann Curry debacle was "Natalie Morales."

The 40-year-old journalist joined Today in 2006.

She took over as the show's news anchor when Curry vacated the position to host alongside Matt Lauer in June 2011.

Now, as Savannah Guthrie succeeds Curry as co-host, Morales may be eyeing the door.

Morales is reportedly none-too-happy about being "passed over" for the plum role.

Some uncomfortable déjà vu

Reportedly, Morales believes she has been passed over not once, but twice.

RadarOnline claims the first time blood started to boil was back in 2011, when popular host Meredith Vieira left and Curry replaced her.

Apparently, Morales thought the gig was hers — so you can imagine how that is going over, now that she's been allegedly snubbed a second time around.

But there's more…

RadarOnline is also reporting that Matt Lauer's wife may have had something to do with Morales not getting promoted.

Allegedly, Lauer and Morales have been a little too friendly as co-workers.

Lauer's wife, Dutch model Annette Roque, was reportedly not down with the prospect that her husband's mistress would be his on-air sidekick as well.

And, you may recall, Matt has long been at the center of cheating scandals.

In fact, it's been widely reported that Roque almost left the veteran TV host over the following alleged trysts:

-- In 2000, two years after their wedding

-- In 2006, over supposed hanky-panky at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy

-- In 2010, this time over alleged indiscretions at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver

If this is true, NBC, please keep this guy away from impending Olympics coverage from here on out!

Apparently, Lauer's wife of 14 years threatened to leave again if Morales was named Curry's replacement.

As if these details aren't enough, RadarOnline also reports that Lauer fathered a child with Morales.

The Today hosts have denied the affair rumors.

In fact, Morales was very open about her "happy marriage" when it was first announced she would be a contributor for the short-lived show The Marriage Ref.

Do you think there is more to Natalie's "snub" than meets the eye? Or is she just not right for the co-host gig?

(Review and swatches): Sally Hansen magnetic nail polish

Nail art is not new, but nowadays easy to wear nail art is just two brushstrokes away thanks to the magnetic nail polish trend. We first heard of Nails, Inc. jumping on the magnetic nail lacquer bandwagon; now, the latest kid on the block is Sally Hansen. Find out how it measures up.

Sally Hansen magnetic nail polish

First, there was Nails Inc. I loved their magnetic nail polishes and was impressed at their creativity. From making nails dazzle like precious stones to bringing the Magnetic North to the nail polish bottle, this brand had it all figured out. .

Now, Sally Hansen debuted a series of similar magnetic nail polishes, and it's simply called Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Color. Let's not discount the creativity of this brand. Their Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips are everything for the gal on the go and they're quite inexpensive. The latest Magnetic Nail Colors come in the gorgeous shades of Polar Purple, Ionic Indigo, Kinetic Copper, Red-y Response, Silver Elements, Electric Emerald, Graphite Gravity and Golden Conduct. Plus, they're only $9 each.

Polish tips and tricks

The polish itself goes on beautifully and a base coat is so easy to apply. The brush offers excellent control and allows you to apply the polish evenly and in hard to reach areas as well. The trick is the top coat, which allows you to experience the real "magnetic effect." Here are the best ways to get this nail color to work just as you see in advertisements and on the bottle:

  • Shake, shake, shake! Remember to shake the bottle before you apply;
  • Apply a good base coat and then a single layer of the Magnetic Nail Color to all nails;
  • Allow your nails to dry;
  • Apply a thick second coat to your nails one by one, and then immediately hover that polish side down over the nail lacquer lid which contains the magnetic field;
  • It's important to do this one by one for each nail;
  • Lift the nail after 10 seconds and you'll see a beautiful magnetic "wave" design;
  • Allow all nails to dry and apply a top coat.

Is it worth it?

From a purely technical point of view, Sally Hansen is the real deal, for much less. If you want magnetic nail polish, you'd definitely want to spend $9 and stock up, as opposed to Nails Inc.'s pricier options. The difference in price though, is really for the quality of the colors and the effect. Nails Inc. for instance, offers a completely different palette than Sally Hansen's: Their Houses of Parliament is a much deeper, glossier shade than Polar Purple. You'll have to decide what look and effect you're going for because both brands work when it comes to creating that magnetic effect.

The fact that the magnetic nail art trend has come to a drugstore near you is wonderful news and shows how accessible makeup can be to all consumers -- regardless of price. So, go on, embrace the nail art wave!

Your toddler's bad habits

$

Ah, that embarrassing moment when your toddler repeats a swear word, calls you a bad name or pulls his pants down in public. Here are a few tips on how to steer your little one into more socially acceptable behavior.

Toddlers are famous for repeating the words we’d rather they not and stripping their clothes off at inopportune moments. So how in the world can we correct the behavior of someone who completely ignores reason?

Modeling

One thing you can do is not do the inappropriate behavior yourself. Toddlers are constantly observing and learning from those around them, so if they hear you let off a string of expletives they will likely be keen to repeat them later — loudly, in the middle of a busy restaurant. Of course, Mom and Dad aren’t likely to parade around in public naked, but you can and probably should monitor your word choices if you don’t want your little one to repeat swear words.

Ignoring

Honestly, it can be really hard to not smile or laugh when your pint-size kiddo says a bad word in her sweet little voice, but really, try not to — even if it means going into the other room to have a snort or two. “Ignoring it works the best,” shared Rachelle, mom of two. “If I even giggle, my kids march around the room saying the offending word.”

Redirection

If you see your toddler getting ready to disrobe in public, steer him quickly in another direction — physically, or with words. Point out something to play with, talk loudly about the birds flying in the air or challenge him to a sprint. If your darling toddler girl happily calls you “stupid” at the fabric store and she seems to be poised for a quick repeat, change the train of her thoughts while giving her a nicer word to say, such as “silly.”

Correction

It’s also a good idea to correct the behavior, even if you think a toddler is too young to understand. “When my son has done things like pull down his pants in the middle of the aisle, I pick him up and have a quiet conversation about how we can only be naked at home,” Noelani, mom of two, told us. “He is told that we have to keep our clothes on in public and it is rude to do otherwise. I get him to agree to leave his clothes on before I put him back down.”

Time

Sometimes, it’s just a matter of time. Your child will likely not be trying to pee in public when he’s in kindergarten, so if the above tips don’t give you any relief from your toddler’s embarrassing and socially awkward habits, then give him time to mature.

Don’t give up on ignoring, redirection and correction though — as your toddler grows, he’ll begin to be able to understand and process how his behavior affects those around him and can internalize the lessons you teach.

Apple pie cookies with salted caramel glaze

Recipe adapted from Baking Bites

Yields about 18 medium cookies

Ingredients:

For the cookies:

  • 1-1/2 cups flour
  • 2 medium apples, finely diced
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • Sea salt
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons apple pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg

For the caramel:

  • 1/3 cup light cream
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4-1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Sea salt

Directons:

  1. In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together. Stir in apple pie spice and set aside.
  2. In another medium bowl, cream butter, applesauce and sugar together until creamy. Add in egg and vanilla and mix until just combined. Gradually stir in flour until mixture is moistened. Stir in apples until mixed. Cover mixture with plastic wrap and chill for at least one to two hours.
  3. Once dough has chilled, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place about one tablespoon of dough, one inch apart on the parchment paper. Bake for 11-13 minutes or until golden brown.
  4. While cookies bake and cool, prepare caramel by heating butter, light cream, brown sugar and vanilla in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Whisk the mixture for about five minutes or until mixture starts to thicken. Remove from heat and let sit for about two to three minutes or until sauce is thick.
  5. While sauce is warm, drizzle about one tablespoon of caramel onto each cookie. Then sprinkle with a pinch or so of sea salt. Serve warm and enjoy!

4 stars who flirted with Scientology (surprise!)

$

With all the buzz about Scientology and its role in TomKat's quickie divorce, it should be no surprise the blogosphere dredged up a widely reported 2007 interview with Jerry Seinfeld recently. Not only did the funny-man admit to taking a few Sci courses, but he said the communication studies actually helped him be funnier.

Other very big names had their 15 minutes "in." They just don't advertise it… and for good reason, given that the details emerging about Scientology seem to get weirder and more terrifying all the time.

Katharine McPhee Scion

Katharine McPhee

The Smash star who first became a household name on American Idol told Salon.com in 2007: "I took a couple of courses. It was really all about a guy."

"You know, guys and girls can do that to our lives and make us think we're into something that we're not," she continued.

It's been widely reported on Scientology insider sites that McPhee completed an introductory detox service called the "purification rundown." The practice has been criticized for its potentially deadly combination of large doses of Niacin and five-hour stints in a sauna.

Patrick Swayze

The late, great Dirty Dancing star told the St. Petersburg Times in the late 1980s that he flirted with Scientology following his father's death at the age of 57.

"I've always felt there was something different in there , but I was scared to look for fear I wouldn't find anything," Swayze said. "That's the reason I got into Buddhism... was into therapy, into Scientology, into Transcendental Meditation. I was trying to support that side of myself."

Apparently, Swayze didn't find what he was looking for as it's been widely reported he opted out of the "religion" a short time later.

Demi Moore Scientology

Demi Moore

Scientology insiders have reported Swayze's Ghost co-star was "heavily courted" by the church through the years, and has been seen leaving Scientology's "Celebrity Center" in L.A.

Apparently, Moore's ex, Bruce Willis, wanted their kids to have nothing to do with Scientology. He allegedly lured the troubled actress away from the religion.

More recently, tongues were wagging that Moore may have been back in the fold, following the breakup of her marriage to Ashton Kutcher. The former Ms. Kutcher was said to be heavily recruited by Kelly Preston and Lisa Marie Presley. It's speculated that Presley is out of the church now, and did not leave quietly, with many Scientology-watchers claiming her latest album contains lyrics that are obviously a big middle-finger to the church.

Brad Pitt Scientology

Brad Pitt

Contrary to recent reports that Angie-Jo's alleged "cousin" was trying to "save" the couple from joining Scientology, the A-lister really did have a run-in with the religion.

You may not remember it, but Pitt dated actress and rocker Juliette Lewis back in the 1990s. Lewis reportedly remains an ardent Scientologist, and it was through her that the star was introduced to the movement's practices.

His flirtation with Scientology came to the surface in more recent years, when a former high-ranking church official, Amy Scobee, wrote about Pitt's experience with the religion in her 2010 book, Scientology -- Abuse at the Top.

She contends that from 1991 to 1993, Pitt completed two courses at the church's Celebrity Center, including "Human Evaluation."

"In the end, Brad didn't think it was for him and he and Juliette broke up," Scobee said, adding, "He was high on the church president’s list of stars they felt could be ‘recovered.'"

The highly anticipated debut of Political Animals is almost here. USA's limited television event features a talented cast led by the one and only Sigourney Weaver. Below, check out an exclusive clip from the drama's premiere episode!

Sigourney Weaver, Sebastian Stan Political AnimalsSigourney Weaver is heading to television. The Oscar-nominated actress is bringing her talents to the USA Network. This summer, Weaver will headline the new drama Political Animals, which focuses on a family deeply embedded in — you guessed it — politics.

In the series, Weaver stars as Elaine Barrish Hammond. She's a former First Lady and presidential candidate turned Secretary of State. Weaver's character makes it a point to stay calm while in the Oval Office but her demanding family constantly pushes her limits.

The Hammond brood consists of philanderer and former U.S. President, Bud and twin sons Douglas and Thomas aka T.J. . They may share a birthday but the 30-year-old brothers are nothing alike. Douglas is clean-cut, career oriented and currently serves as his mother's Chief of Staff.

Sigourney Weaver is such a Political Animal >>

On the other hand, T.J. is more of a wild card. Life for the Hammonds hasn't been easy, and no one knows that more than him. He was harassed for being the first openly gay son of a U.S. president and has spent much of his life struggling with addiction.

Political Animals casts Oscar heavyweight >>

Check out an exclusive clip from Political Animals that features Elaine and T.J. in action.

Political Animals also stars Carla Gugino, Ellen Burstyn, Dylan Baker, Brittany Ishibashi and Adrian Pasdar.

Political Animals debuts July 15 at 10 p.m. on USA.

The beach is a mecca for free craft supplies. Here's how to use your kids' beach collections to do three fun beachy crafts.

Shell windchimes

These simple windchimes are easy to make and look so pretty hanging. Choose lighter shells for best results.

You need:

  • fishing line or jewelry wire
  • shells with holes in them
  • 1 starfish
  • ribbon

Directions:

  1. Using the fishing line or jewelry wire, string up 3-4 shells along a 12-inch length, tying them on to secure. Repeat, creating 5 of these.
  2. Tie one end of each string to the starfish legs, allowing them to dangle down. If desired, you can create two strings for each leg for more shell action.
  3. Wrap the ribbon around the center of the starfish and create a loop above to hang it from.
  4. Hang in a place with a light breeze and enjoy the sweet sounds it makes.

Sweet Seashell Picture Frame

You need:

  • 1 unfinished wood picture frame
  • 1 paint brush
  • 1 paint, color of choice
  • hot glue gun
  • shells

Directions:

  1. Line a workspace with newspaper, setting the frame on top. Using the paint brush and paint, paint the frame all over. If desired, do a second coat to ensure an even coloring or use additional colors to create designs on the frame.
  2. Lay out shells, sea glass and other beach items on the frame where you want them. Use a hot glue gun to carefully glue each item down.
  3. Let the glue cool fully before handling.

Homemade shell jewelry box

Do your kids covet those cute shell-covered jewelry boxes in gift shops? If so, let them create their own special version in this easy beach craft.

  • 1 unfinished wood jewelry box
  • paint brush, as needed
  • paint
  • hot glue gun
  • shells, sea glass, etc.

  2. Arrange shells, sea glass and other beach objects on the box, as desired.
  3. Using the hot glue gun, affix shells to the box. Let cool completely.

Beach crafting tips:

  • Although these crafts call for shells, they can be made with driftwood, reeds, sea glass and even well-tumbled stones. Use your discretion to decide what to use.
  • Be sure to supervise whenever a hot glue gun is being used. It really does get hot, so exercising caution is essential. For younger children, use teamwork .
  • If desired, you can spray these crafts with a glaze to give them a shiny finish.

Peter O'Toole is stepping away from the spotlight. After five decades of breathtaking performances, he's ready to retire. The actor has officially announced his departure from the Hollywood scene.

Peter O'Toole

Screen legend Peter O'Toole is throwing in the towel. After 50-plus years in film, television and theater, the actor is retiring. He announced the news Tuesday morning in a heartfelt letter to his fans.

The 79-year-old wrote :

"Dear All,

It is time for me to chuck in the sponge. To retire from films and stage. The heart for it has gone out of me: it won’t come back. My professional acting life, stage and screen, has brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort.

It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom I’ve shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits. However, it’s my belief that one should decide for oneself when it is time to end one’s stay. So I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell. Ever Peter O’Toole"

Regis Philbin retiring from morning show >>

Over the course of his career, O'Toole has earned eight Academy Award nominations, including one for his star-making performance in Lawrence of Arabia. Although he's never snagged the statue in a competitive category, he received an honorary Oscar in 2003.

Five ways to make sure you'll never retire >>

But don't feel too bad for O'Toole. He's been rewarded in other ways. To his credit, he has four Golden Globes, an Emmy, a BAFTA and The Olivier Award.

O'Toole's talent and body of work can't be ignored. Aside from Arabia, other notable films include Becket, The Lion in Winter, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, The Ruling Class, The Stunt Man, My Favorite Year and Venus.

Farewell Mr. O'Toole, and thanks for the memories.
