8 Haunted houses that are actually really haunted

$

These eight horrifying houses don't come filled with the normal terrors of a Hollywood haunt. They come with real-life horror stories far too gruesome to come from someone's imagination. From unsolved axe murders in the prairies of Iowa, to the home of Lizzie Borden and ghastly sanitariums, the real stories behind these places are far more terrifying than anything you'd see in a movie. The question is: are you brave enough to visit them this Halloween?

Waverly Hills Sanatorium — Kentucky

It may not be the size of a single family house, but it was the home for many patients with tuberculosis in 1910. Over 150 residents lived in Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky during the early 1900s. Doctors, unaware that TB was highly contagious and airborne, allowed these patients visitation from friends and family, which only furthered the spread of tuberculosis in the area. Because of this, legends say that over 8,000 people died at Waverly from crippling tuberculosis, with the highest rate of deaths per year at 152. In addition to the souls of the sick, room 502 is supposedly haunted by one of the hospital's nurses, who hung herself because she had contracted the disease while pregnant. The Sanatorium is now open for ghost tours and haunted house visits.

Robert Berdella Home — Missouri

One of the most horrifying true crime stories in U.S. history, the tale of Robert Berdella's house of horrors is almost too gruesome to share. Notably one of the worst serial killers in the country, Berdella used his Kansas City home for unspeakable acts of torture. Neighbors began suspecting something awful was happening when the young boys he brought home disappeared without a trace — and when Berdella started boarding up his windows and doors. The macabre odor that permeated the neighborhood only furthered suspicions. Berdella was finally caught when one of his victims escaped from the top floor window with grotesque bruises, wounds and accounts of his imprisonment, which included repeated sexual abuse and human experimentation. The police were only able to identify three victims, though they believe there could be more than 20.

The Myrtles Plantation — Louisiana

Myrtles Plantation

Myrtles Plantation

Consistently touted as one of the most haunted houses in America, the historic Myrtles Plantation in Louisiana certainly has its fair share of spooks. Built in 1797, the plantation was home to dozens of unexplained deaths from illness, murder and even poisoning. Of the deaths, visitors and owners of the property have claimed to have experienced 12 different spirits, including the most famous — Chloe, a former slave. Legend states that in the early part of the 19th century, Chloe served as the governess to the children of the mansion, the Woodruffe children. Chloe, who was a lover of Judge Clark Woodruffe, had her ear chopped off when she was caught eavesdropping. To stand her ground in the home, she poisoned the mother and children with an oleander-tainted birthday cake, killing them one by one. Scared the judge would take out his anger on them, the rest of the plantation's slaves rallied against Chloe and hung her in the backyard. A famous photograph taken by National Geographic shows a haunting photo of a young apparition between the buildings of the home, many whom believe it to be the lonely, sad ghost of Chloe.

Villisca Axe Murder House — Iowa

Villisca House
Image: VilliscaIowa

Home to one of the country’s most infamous unsolved mysteries, the Villisca Axe Murder house in Iowa has a very sinister past. On June 12, 1912, all six members of the upstanding Moore family and two young guests were found massacred by an axe in their quaint country home. The murderer was never found, however people of the town have their theories, which range from a wandering vagabond to the town priest. Owners and visitors of the home encounter the slain spirits almost daily, from hearing childhood laughter in the old kids rooms to unexplainable creaking in the attic, which is where the murderer was said to be waiting for the family to arrive home.

Franklin Castle — Ohio

Image: TopTenz

With its rough sandstone exterior, round widow’s peak tower and gargoyle embellishments, the spooky appearance of Franklin Castle in Ohio rivals the scary stories that surround it. Those who have been brave enough to go inside have witnessed an eerie woman in black staring outside the lonely tower window. In addition, they’ve heard the sounds of children crying and have seen doors slam and lights spin and flicker all throughout the house. The reason for the haunting is simple: The Tiedemann Family who called the mansion home at the turn of the century experienced grave sadness while living there. All four of Hans Tiedemann's children, his mother, his niece and his mistress passed away inside the castle’s walls.

Madame LaLaurie's Home — Louisiana

LaLaurie's house

LaLaurie's house

This story is certainly not for the faint of heart and still remains one of the most horrifying tales in Louisiana history. The LaLaurie Mansion, which sits in historic New Orleans, once belonged to Parisian socialite Madame Delphine LaLaurie. To guests of her lavish parties, she seemed to have the perfect life, with well-behaved daughters, a doting husband and very respectful slaves. What they didn’t see was the ghastly torture she would inflict on everyone inside the house. Despite whispers around town, the residents weren’t abreast on the mistreatment of the slaves until a fire broke out in 1834. Fire fighters discovered a horrible torture chamber in her attic where over a dozen slaves were found chained to the wall and stuffed in cages with body parts and grisly souvenirs found scattered on the ground. In addition to these twelve, Delphine kept her cook chained to the stove and repetitively beat her daughters if they were out of line. Although she fled to Paris without paying for her crimes, thousands of visitors can’t help but feel her presence when they tour the mansion’s notorious attic.

The Sowden House - California

Image: Sowden House

Not only is the Sowden House in California haunted, it’s also for sale. You could take residence with LA’s most famous spirit for a mere $4.79 million. Even though it’s just a rumor, people believe that it’s the place Elizabeth Short, or the Black Dahlia, was murdered in 1947. Another one of the country's most cryptic unsolved crimes, the prime suspect, Dr. George Hill Hodel, took residence in this mansion. Even Steve Hodel, the grandson of Dr. George Hodel, believes his grandfather murdered Short by cutting her body in half in the basement of the house. Despite cadaver dogs picking up the smell of human remains, the evil doctor was never prosecuted. Guests and potential buyers of the home still report seeing shadows of bodies and hearing the sound of chains against the cold basement floor.

Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast — Massachusetts

Lizzie Borden House

Lizzie Borden House

We’ve all heard the nursery rhyme depicting the grim murder that took place in 1892 in Falls River, Massachusetts. "Lizzie Borden took an axe / And gave her mother forty whacks. / When she saw what she had done, / She gave her father forty-one." This macabre song was sung to children for centuries, and truthfully depicts one of the state’s most ill-famed murders. Just as the rhyme portrays, Lizzie Borden was arrested for the murder of her stepmother and father, who she clubbed 30 times with a household hatchet. There has been plenty of speculation as to whether or not she actually did it, but the house remains haunted with the spirits of poor Abby and Andrew. The house is now a working museum and bed and breakfast, although we wouldn’t advise actually sleeping there.

Mom's demanding Halloween sign has Internet in an uproar

As a parent of kids who have several food allergies, I know that I have plenty of options on Halloween. But one mom whose Halloween sign has gone viral on Reddit seems to think that responsible parenting means that other people have to — no, are required to — hand out allergen-free treats to trick-or-treaters.

Check it out:

Parent demands neighborhood hand out carrots on H'ween

Parent demands neighborhood hand out carrots on H'ween

Look. I get it. Halloween has been terrifying to me since my second child was diagnosed with a peanut allergy 12 years ago, when he was only 4 years old. Each Halloween since, his dad and I have combed through his candy stash and taken out the things we knew he couldn't have, as well as all of the infuriating candy that isn't individually labeled clearly (so we weren't sure if it was safe for him to eat or not).

More5 Things parents must do if they own guns

We have repeated this with both his younger sisters — one has celiac disease and the other is also allergic to peanuts. It's not fun, but it's what you have to do if your child just can't go around eating whatever candy they get.

And yes, I strongly feel that people over-complain about kids and food allergies, especially when it comes to kids in a school setting where they're not in the presence of their parents — and where they can more easily become exposed to something that can kill them. It makes me sad to hear callous remarks about helicoptering parents whose kids can literally drop dead if they eat peanut butter by mistake.

MoreYour guide to allergy-friendly Halloween candy

However! Halloween is a hell of a time to expect your entire neighborhood to cater to your kid's dietary needs. It really is. And the overbearing tone of this missive is where the bulk of the problem lies. This parent demands that you hand out carrot sticks, Smarties, Necco wafers and raisins, because that is responsible parenting. If she had made a sign politely requesting that homes have those types of treats available, it wouldn't have come across as quite so pretentious and jerk-ish. But she didn't, and now we're talking about how awful her sign is.

There are so many other solutions a parent can employ if their child is allergic to certain types of Halloween candy. For starters, pound it into their heads that they cannot eat anything while they're trick-or-treating. This is common sense and applies to all kids, not just ones with food allergies. This is good parenting.

MoreWhen your kid has life-threatening allergies, labels control your life

Then, when they get home, sit with them and sort the candy out, and if possible, they may be able to trade with a sibling. This way, they may find more options that they can have. Or you can have some candy of your own on hand to trade with your kid. You can have them set out their rejected treats for a Switch Witch-type exchange, where they'll find a toy or other non-candy option in the morning.

Yes, it's amazing and wonderful if neighbors have allergy-friendly treats (or non-food items) to hand out on Halloween. In fact, I encourage it. But I would never demand it. I know that dealing with food allergies is a pain in the ass. We, as a family, live it. And yes, Halloween can kind of suck for that reason. But there is no way that posting a sign like this will do anything more than make your neighbors think you're a ding-dong.

Haunted gingerbread house is as fun to make as it is to eat

Making a gingerbread house is fairly simple even without a mold or cookie cutter. You can easily make one with no special equipment by rolling out the dough and cutting out two sides, two roofs and two bases. You can make a more elaborate house by adding doors, windows, chimneys and so much more once you get the hang of it. I'm including two basic templates for small houses. You can print them out or draw them for yourself. I cut out one of each piece from thick paper and use it twice to create a house.

Gingerbread recipe

Makes 1 house

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup corn syrup
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine (melted)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Directions:

  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the melted butter, molasses, brown sugar and corn syrup.
  3. Once everything is combined, add the flour and spices. Use a spatula to stir everything together. The mixture should come together without being overly sticky.
  4. Roll out the dough using flour so it doesn't stick to you, the board or the rolling pin.
  5. Using the house templates, cut out 2 sides, 2 roofs and a front and a back. Place the house pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Before placing them in the oven, even out the pieces as needed. It's best to trim any edges or to square off corners once the pieces are on the baking sheet so you don't disturb them by moving them onto to the baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Allow the house pieces to cool completely before assembling.

Royal icing recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 egg whites
  • 3-1/2 cups confectioner's sugar
  • Food coloring

Directions:

  1. Using a stand mixer, beat the egg whites and sugar together for about 3 to 5 minutes, until the mixture is shiny and sticky. This icing hardens quickly, so make it just before you are ready to start assembling.

Assembling and decorating

  1. Assemble the gingerbread house using the royal icing as "glue." Frost the edge of 1 piece, and press the adjoining piece to the icing. Hold together for a few seconds until the icing starts to set, and then repeat with the other sides.
  2. Once your house is assembled, use food coloring to color some of the remaining royal icing — 2 or 3 colors should do it.
  3. Place the icing into a food storage bag, and cut a small hole at the tip of the bag. This way you can pipe the icing as desired and keep it from drying out as you work.
  4. You can pipe the colored icing to create borders, brickwork, spiderwebs or any other details you like.
  5. The icing is also the glue for any candy decorations. Pipe on little blobs of icing, and place candies on, holding them in place for a few seconds to make sure they are stuck to the house.

Women are getting surgery to hide their camel toes for good

Yoga pants are beloved by women everywhere for being the comfiest pants around. Unfortunately all that stretchy athleisure goodness comes with a price: Yoga pants hide nothing. And nowhere is that more apparent than in the frontal region where peek-a-boo privates can range from a discreet outline to full-on camel toe. There are those who will wear their dromedary salute with pride, but most of us prefer to minimize or camouflage it.

Some women, however, are going way past using a panty liner, special underwear, or even a "cuchini" to put their biscuit back in the box. According to the New York Post, these ladies are going so far as to cut off pieces of their labia to achieve that perfectly smooth, Barbie crotch look in all their leggings, no matter how thin the fabric.

More: The pros and cons of getting plastic surgery

"The ubiquitous yoga pants that everyone is wearing are playing a big part in this trend," Richard Swift, MD, a plastic surgeon who performs between three and five labiaplasties per week, reported to the Post. "For those whose labia are enlarged, they can make them feel uncomfortable and exposed. One of my patients was particularly self-conscious doing Pilates in a leotard — so much so that she was afraid to do certain moves." (Side note: There are so many reasons to feel self-conscious doing Pilates in a leotard, really.)

That ladies want to look good in their clothing isn't new, but labiaplasty, the practice of getting the pubic area surrounding the vagina reshaped with surgery, may be one of the more extreme trends women have used to do so. Whether it's to look like a porn star, please a lover, look younger or rock yoga leggings without fear, over 6,000 women had the procedure last year alone and while that number on its own isn't too shocking, the rate increased 48 percent from the previous year and continues to skyrocket in popularity, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

More: I would totally get a tummy tuck and I'm not ashamed to say it

At $5,000 to $7,500 a pop, getting a makeover down under is a serious commitment — and that's not even counting the fact that you're taking a scalpel to one of your most sensitive areas. This seems like a lot of effort to go to just to wear tight pants. But ultimately, like breast enhancements and tummy tucks, perhaps the real benefit is in the self-esteem boost. As one anonymous satisfied customer told the Post, "When it comes to that part of the body, less is definitely more!"

Or maybe it's just time to buy looser pants.

#WhatDoITellMySon about the way the world views our interracial family?

As we surveyed the restaurants on this mostly empty block in Nyack, New York, I noticed an older woman looking at me. I found her expression curious. She looked at my wife, and back at me.

My wife is almost 15 years my junior. Maybe this woman isn't OK with our age difference, I thought. But I glanced at my wife, and it hit me: This was The Look.

My wife is black, Caribbean-American. The Look isn't about age, but about color. It's a show of disapproval by unsophisticated people — people who may be progressive in other things, but are not color-blind when it comes to love.

That's a rather nice way of saying this woman was bigoted.

White people don't generally understand The Look. It's not something I ever had to deal with before. I know people don't always like me, for whatever reason. But I honestly try to like everyone until they give me a specific reason not to like them, and I try to base my opinion on specific actions, not general traits.

What am I supposed to do now? I thought. How do I react to her? Do I react to her? I was taken by surprise, but quickly decided that this woman was not a person I needed to react to. She walked by, and I let her pass peacefully. If she had done anything else, I would have reacted. But, I decided, The Look was not worthy of a response.

I thought about this woman during lunch. I thought about The Look. I didn't mention it to my wife. We had only discussed our race differences casually and lightly during our relationship. For us, it is no big deal. We were (and are) in love. Love triumphs over all. Doesn't it?

That was a few years ago, and I've mostly reacted the same way since then: If other people don't understand or appreciate our differences—well, maybe those people don't deserve any attention from me. If they look, they look. So be it. If they initiate an action or conversation, I will deal with that as appropriately as I can.

But the situation has been greatly complicated by the arrival of our twin sons seven years ago. Our boys are incredible, awesome, inspiring and refreshing (as well as tiring, worrying, bothersome and annoying on special occasions).

What do I tell my sons about The Look, which they will inevitably receive some day, when folks realize Daddy is white and Mommy is black?

In our diverse neighborhood now, we don't have any issues. But diversity doesn't always guarantee openness. The woman who first gave me The Look — that happened in a diverse neighborhood, too. If we move to a less diverse neighborhood, will we, and they, get The Look more often — and will disapproval progress beyond looking?

With black men and women being murdered by police, will my boys be exempt because I am white, or will they be violated because Mommy is black?

What do I tell them? How do I prepare them? Can I prepare them? How do I explain the illogic of shooting unarmed black men? Or the mysterious deaths of black women in jail? Will my boys be subject to a senseless and inconceivable act by a harried or troubled or closed-minded officer of the law?

I don't get it. I don't understand. What do I tell my boys?

This is not a situation where I can just "stay the course." These issues will inevitably arise someday. Nevertheless, I must inject my lessons and trainings where I can. The best approach, as I have learned in the past seven years, is by example. Dads are the primary role models for their sons. How I act around others, including and especially Mommy, will speak volumes to the boys.

I will add some harmonious teachings, like being open and accepting of people different from themselves, along the way. Life is a journey I must prepare my sons for, as I have prepared.

“What the hell makes you think I’ll leave here with you tonight, Aidan Burke?” She curls her fingers across my collar, her lips pursing in a way so tempting that I want to meet them with my own and see if she tastes as spicy and irresistible as she acts. “What the hell makes you think you’re anywhere near my league?”

“Damn,” I laugh softly. I slide across the leather seat, hit full force by her unrelenting confidence. “Jessie, baby,” I say into her ear, curving my fingers around the back of her neck. “I don’t think you’re gonna leave with me. I know you are. You’re gonna leave with me, and I’m gonna give you the night of your fuckin’ life.”

“You’re real arrogant.”

“You mistake my confidence,” I murmur, trailing a hand up her curved side until my thumb brushes the underside of her breast. A tremor runs through her, and my lips twitch, sliding my hand back down and hooking her leg over mine. “Two different things. I’m real confident that I could take you back and kiss my way across your body until you’re begging for me to slide my cock inside you and fuck you until you’re screamin’ instead of beggin’.”

“Still arrogant,” she breathes, her hands slipping down to my waist.

“No—arrogance is sayin’ I’m gonna flip you onto your knees and fuck you until you pass out.” I lean toward her. “Confidence is knowin’ I’ll have you beggin’ and screamin’ for me.”

She trails her fingers around my waist and up to the collar of my shirt. “Give me one good reason why I should let you put your confidence on me.”

“You’ve got a score to settle,” I say into her ear, moving her hair away. “You’re here to get laid because you’re done wallowing in your own bullshit over your ex. Don’t take this for more than what it is, sunshine. It’s a fuck, pure and simple. We’re only connected by the fact that you hold big-ass childhood grudges against me. Don’t think you’ve gotta call me tomorrow or that I’m gonna call you.”

Jessie takes a deep breath, her fingers twitching at my neck. Her nails scrape against my skin in the gentlest way and I resist the urge to grab her wrists and pin them above her head and fuck her right here, right now, in this cheap leather booth.

“Fine,” she breathes. “One fuck, Aidan Burke. No frills. No rumors. Nothing public. Just you and me, and one night of the mind-blowing sex you’re promising me.”

“Sounds like an offer I can’t refuse,” I reply, guiding her mouth toward mine.

She puts two fingers over my lips. “And this doesn’t mean I forgive you for seventh grade. It just means that I’m on the rebound. And a little, little bit drunk.”

Shit, that was cute. “A little, little bit drunk? As opposed to just a little?”

“Shut up.” She rolls her eyes and lets go of me, getting up. “I’m going to the bathroom. Give me five minutes?”

“You got it, baby.”

Oprah Winfrey sets the record straight about her 'secret son'

Calvin Mitchell has been telling tabloids Winfrey wanted to adopt him but later cut him out of her life, and even tried to ambush her outside of the Ed Sullivan Theater earlier this month. But although Winfrey does admit she has a decades-long relationship with the man, it is nothing like what Mitchell would have us believe.

"I met Calvin around the early '90s, I think it was 1992. I was doing a film for television called There Are No Children Here," Oprah told Entertainment Tonight, adding that Calvin is not her biological child.

"We were shooting in the projects in Chicago and I was sitting on set during a break, and this cute little sparkly-eyed boy came underneath the yellow tape to hand me a soda. I was so charmed by him that I started talking to him about his family, his school life, and found out that he was in a situation where his mother didn't have a job and they were stuck in the projects."

More: Oprah Magazine fat-shames curvy women for wearing crop tops

Touched by the family's plight, Winfrey decided to help them move out of the projects, found a job for Mitchell's mother, and enrolled the boy in a local private school. Shortly after, she received a phone call from the school's principal to inform her that he had not been attending classes. Winfrey explained that when she questioned the family, she found out that they could not afford alarm clocks.

"We realized they don't have any clocks in the house," she said. "We went out, Stedman and I, went to K-Mart that moment, got a bag full of clocks, came back to the house, taught them how to set the alarm and all that."

But it didn't help. Mitchell was eventually expelled from the school.

"I had a long conversation with him about how disappointed I was but I was going to give him another chance," she continued. "I found a school in Mississippi that was a private boarding school because I thought if I could remove him from the environment that he'd been accustomed to growing up in, that maybe that would be helpful to him."

That didn't work either. He complained to Winfrey that he did not want to remain at the school because the "teachers didn't like him."

"I said, 'Calvin, this is the moment. This is a seminal moment for you. I know you are 16 and can't see the road ahead, but if you leave this school and refuse to get an education — I have tried to offer you an education twice — there isn't another school I can put you in. If you leave this school, I am done. There is nothing else I can do.' ... And that was my last conversation with Calvin in the early '90s."

More: Oprah is auctioning off crazy swag from her Chicago apartment

When Mitchell approached her outside of Stephen Colbert's studio this month, she said she didn't recognize him right away but did try to make contact after the incident, despite suspecting he was selling lies to the press.

"I could see the little boy in his eyes, even though time has changed a lot for him, and I said to him, 'What are you doing? Why did you go to the tabloids?'" Winfrey said. "When I realized the whole thing was a setup, I was no longer interested in speaking to him."

But her experience with Mitchell did teach her one thing: that you can't just throw money at a problem.

"I learned from that experience, if you really want to change somebody's life, you gotta be able to spend enough time with them to change the way they think about what their life can be," she said. "It isn't enough to give a person a new life or money or a new car, you have to teach them how to fish themselves."

The 9 agonizing stages of attempting to refinish thrifted furniture

1. Sheer Pinterest-inspired delusion

pinterest-excited-computer
Image: Giphy

There it is: The before-and-after photo of a hideous golden oak chifferobe made beautiful for mere pennies. Picked up at a Goodwill, doused in an ocean's worth of chalk paint and refitted with brand new hardware, you stare in awe at this divine creation, and then you do something extremely stupid: You say, "I could totally do something like that" and then actually take steps to follow through.

2. Complete bewilderment

urkel-confused
Image: Giphy

Once you get to the thrift store, flea market, garage sale or shady Craigslist posting meetup location, you realize two things pretty quickly; one, that people don't just get rid of high quality yet hideous furniture, and two, that you will likely have to wait for days, weeks or even months for anything that isn't a busted up Ikea LACK table or particle board bookcase to show up on the thrifting circuit. Yes, we're calling it that now.

3. Shocked indignation

dance-moms-how-dare-you
Image: Giphy

When something finally does show up, you're in for the next big surprise: It ain't cheap. All of the furniture flippers on Pinterest are either lying liars who lie all the time or the luckiest people on earth. Even the most dubious chest of drawers that reeks of cigarette smoke and is missing a leg is going to cost you $80 or more.

4. Sedan-induced denial

Image: Giphy

Womp-womp. Your "find" won't fit into your car. Why didn't you think of that? No matter, you'll just ignore irritating things like facts and jam your rat-poo filled treasure up and over the seats. Sure, you'll rip a huge gash in your headliner in the process, and that will cost $200 to repair, but think about how much money you're saving on your chest of drawers.

5. Naive hopefulness

dumb-and-dumber-theres-a-chance
Image: Giphy

Once it's home and you've found a place to start slapping it around with a paintbrush, you might start to feel a little hopeful, but don't worry, that will be dashed soundly as soon as you realize that you can't just paint laminate, you don't own a tackcloth and you're not really sure what the difference between latex and enamel is.

6. Frantic overcompensation

squidward-painting-no
Image: Giphy

After hours of mistakes, you officially throw good time after bad by forcing your way through it. Yes, the paint you're adding is hideous. Yes, it still isn't dry after four days. Yes, the cat walked over it and left prints and hair but you are a flea market goddess, dammit. Let no one see you cry.

7. Blind, uncontrollable fury

This isn't working. Why the f*** isn't this working? At this point you'll probably bicycle-kick that dumb piece of ugly, smudged, smelly crap that has the audacity to call itself a chest of drawers across your garage. It'll probably break.

8. Hysterical weeping

rick-and-morty-mom-wine
Image: Giphy

Oh God, what have you done? Why did you do that? This has been weeks, maybe even months in the making. You could have fixed it! Now it's time to sit down and weep. Weep for your dignity. Your wallet. Your ripped headliner.

9. Total nihilistic despair

Huh. Look at that. There really is no intrinsic, deeper meaning to life. Might as well go waste some time on Pinterest, then.

Rare cat-dog hybrid that looks like a werewolf is actually kind of cute

Dog people love the loyalty of their furry little friends, while cat owners are smitten by their fur ball's independent ways. If only there was a way we could have a pet with the independence of a cat but the loyalty of a dog. Well, fellow animal lovers, look no further than the slightly terrifying Lykoi werewolf cat.

With missing tufts of hair around their nose and eyes, this bizarre, but strangely adorable cat has been created by breeders in the United States.

Because of a unique genetic mutation, these furry felines are left looking like their hair is permanently standing on end, which is the reason they've been nicknamed the werewolf cat.

Not only do they look permanently scared, but some cats can lose almost all of their hair when malting and then regrow it as they get older. It's thought that this happens because the breed doesn't have an undercoat.

More: 25 Random cat behaviours finally explained

Lykoi werewolf cat

Listen up, dog lovers, because the curious new breed also acts like a canine. They like to play, they're loyal, and they won't even plot revenge against you behind your back.

The breeders obviously have a sense of humour. The name Lykoi is said to have come from the Greek word for wolf. And more humour still, they have an acute prey drive, which means they'll stalk and pounce on anything they think is prey.

If you're thinking of adopting one of these little guys to join your menagerie, you might want to think about that long and hard before you go off and buy one.

Lykoi werewolf cat
Image: LykoiKitten.com

Why's that? Well, for starters, they're pretty hard to track. There are only 54 Lykoi cats in the world and just seven registered breeders.

And being a rare werekitty comes with a hefty price tag, too, of course. A werewolf-cat fur baby will set you back between $2,500 and $3,500 AUD.

Justin Bieber's latest behavior was disgustingly entitled (VIDEO)

On Thursday night, after performing just one song, Bieber got flustered and angry, announced he wasn’t going to finish the show and walked offstage.

A video shot with a cellphone has surfaced of the incident, showing a clearly unnerved Bieber telling screaming, excited fans something like, "Yo listen to me, are you listening? OK, I’m trying to wipe the floor, give me a second, yo,” before exclaiming, "Guys, never mind, I’m done. I’m not doing the show."

Bieber took to Instagram to post his apology immediately following the incident, blaming lack of sleep, among other things, for his actions.

He said, "Sadly it's Been a rough week for me, long days no sleep, while having to be 'on' as they would say for cameras fans etc. In no way did I mean to come across mean, but chose to end the show as the people in the front row would not listen. Hopefully people will understand where I am coming from. I don't always handle things the right way but I'm human and I'm working on getting better at responding not reacting. Unfortunately people were affected by this as am I. For the people in the back I am so sorry and for anyone I may have disappointed I'm sorry. Apparently, Bieber is so popular in Norway that, according to NBC, some schools rescheduled exams around the concert so that students could attend, and the Norwegian daily website VG said that when Bieber's private jet left Oslo’s airport in the middle of the night, he left fans "shaken and some in tears."

Fans are understandably upset by this and are sounding off on his Instagram post. After sifting through the thousands of heart emoji posts, you can find some pretty angry fans who want Bieber to take responsibility for his actions.

One person simply commented, “You’re kind of an ass for doing that."

Another person went into a little more detail, apparently in response to some other comments. "I can understand this type of [thing] happening once, but this has happened far too many times I can't even keep count, and the fact that he is so condescending stating that he WILL change his ways, he has been saying that for years and I have seen little [to] no sign of improvement. And the fact that he disrespects people who take time out of their day to watch him live, and that's how he repays them?”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen bad behavior from Bieber, and he has, on many an occasion, claimed he was going to change his little-boy tantrum-throwing ways, but this was the second such incident of bad behavior just that day. Also on Thursday, Bieber walked out of a particularly terrible interview, to the bewilderment of the radio hosts.

My teenage son said he wanted to commit suicide

I didn’t know how to respond. His counselor told me that she'd spoken with my son and that he had admitted to her he'd talked about committing suicide, but that he didn't have a plan.

“Why don’t you come pick him up today and see about getting him some help,” she said.

I was completely thrown. How could this have happened without me seeing the signs? Immediately I called my husband, while rushing to get dressed.

“What? He was so happy this morning,” he said.

“I know; I don’t understand either.”

When I arrived, I hugged my son and escorted him to the car, then drove directly to the nearest emergency room to admit him for a psychiatric assessment as his counselor had advised. For 10 hours, we waited in a small room for a qualified professional to arrive and decide whether or not my son was truly at risk. The entire time I sat with my son, listened to his frustrations and tried my best to understand what had motivated him to tell his friends that he was contemplating suicide.

More: 6 Incredible suicide prevention apps everyone should know

What I learned wasn’t completely new, but some of it was surprising.

For months, I knew my son had been feeling isolated and lonely. His classmates and friends weren’t always supportive and many times, he felt as if no one at school liked or accepted him. That wasn’t the only thing — a few weeks earlier, he also saw the outpouring of love and support when his closest friend was hospitalized for threatening to take his own life.

“I knew I would never do it,” my son assured me. “It’s just that sometimes I wish people were nicer to me. And ever since my friend went to the hospital, everyone’s been really caring towards him. It made me think that suicide was a way to get people to see I was hurting, too.”

Eventually, a licensed clinical social worker arrived and declared my son healthy and mentally stable enough to return home. He told me privately that sometimes teenagers could be influenced by other children who attempt suicide, and that he didn’t feel our son was intent on harming himself.

More: Suicide contagion may be impacting your teen without you even realizing it

Even with medical clearance, the experience left me shaken. I didn’t want to leave my son alone, for fear he was saying the right thing to distract us. I made sure to spend lots of one-on-one time with him each day, listening to his concerns and reminding him of how deeply he was loved.

I also felt moved to research the idea that people can be influenced by suicide, and found a piece in The New York Times that explained how suicide rates among young people increased nearly 5 percent when someone they knew, or knew of, committed suicide.

For further understanding, I reached out to Dr. Steven Schlozman, the associate director of the Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds at Massachusetts General Hospital, about this phenomenon of “suicide contagion” and how it impacts teenagers.

“Suicide contagion happens when someone well-known in the community commits suicide, and it leads to an increase in suicides from others who may or may not have known the person," he explained. "It can even be a fictionalized suicide of a character in a movie or book that triggers this response. What’s statistically significant is that this effect seems to last two weeks.”

According to Dr. Schlozman, it is not uncommon for those in the medical profession who work with children to hear, “I’ve been thinking about suicide.” Youth-risk surveys have illuminated how common suicidal thoughts are among teenagers: Approximately 15 to 30 percent of teens surveyed admit to seriously contemplating suicide, and with higher stress, those numbers can climb as high as 40 to 50 percent.

“Between the ages of 12 to 17, through social and peer influence, thoughts of suicide can be introduced, and the teenager can begin toying with the idea,” explained Dr. Sanam Hafeez, director and neuropsychologist at Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services in New York City and faculty at Columbia University.

According to Dr. Hafeez, most teenagers have one thing in common: a need to fit in and be accepted. Those who feel unpopular or unaccepted by their peers may see talking about suicide as a way to get noticed.

“Negative attention is still attention,” she noted, warning that it is important for parents to reach out and comfort their children, offering them professional help if they or someone they know is experiencing thoughts of suicide.

More: When teen suicide hits close to home

As for my son, it turns out that although it was hard for him to admit, his cry for help was more about feeling left out than wanting to end his life. Still, it opened a door for both his father and me to make sure he had help coping with these common feelings of exclusion.

“When I told my friends that I thought about suicide,” my son said, “it was just that. A thought. I guess I figured people would understand that I have feelings too. I didn’t think it would end up this big of a deal.”

That’s not to say that a child speaking about suicide shouldn’t be taken seriously. Dr. Schlozman urges parents to be open and communicative with their child if they express suicidal ideations.

“Ask your child to tell you about how they are feeling. No matter how they respond, be open to listening to them.”

He also warns against treating suicidal threats with punishment, which can lead to them shutting themselves off from receiving the help they need.

“Schedule an appointment with their pediatrician, and let them know that no matter what, you’re there for them. If the pediatrician feels they need further help, they can refer them to a specialist.”

It’s now been several months and I am happy to report that my son is learning how to cope with his feelings in healthier ways and no longer talks or thinks about suicide.

“That’s not how I want people to see me,” he said recently. “I want people to like me because I’m a good person, not because they feel sorry for me. I just didn’t realize that before.”

If you or a loved one are experiencing suicidal thoughts, there is help. Contact your primary doctor, or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255, and remember, you are not alone.

Katie Holmes' reaction to Leah Remini's ABC special is fascinating (VIDEO)

It was at Holmes' wedding to Tom Cruise that Remini said she first drew the ire of Scientology bigwigs by questioning why Shelly Miscavige, the wife of church leader David Miscavige, had not been seen in so long. But before that, Remini said she was strongly reprimanded for making a joke about the couple's blatant show of PDA during dance lessons.

In a preview of Remini's 20/20 special airing tonight, she explained that she and her husband Angelo Pagan, who used to be in a salsa band, were called by a Scientology official one night who said, "Tom wants you to come over and teach him salsa dancing."

When Remini and Pagan arrived, they found Cruise and his then-new girlfriend Holmes getting very frisky while flanked by two Scientology officials.

"He was like, forcibly kissing Kate," Remini said. "I said, 'Hey, get a frickin' room,' and I was written up for that."

Remini explained that being critical of Cruise was tantamount to "being critical of Scientology itself," adding, "You are a person who is 'anti' the aims and goals of Scientology. You are 'evil.'"

ABC sent Holmes a list of questions, hoping to get her to participate in Remini's exposé of the church since she herself left when she split from Cruise. But rather than answer any of their questions, she sent a seemingly simple written statement.

"I regret having upset Leah in the past and I wish her only the best in the future," Holmes said.

Well, what the heck does that mean?

We don't know what questions ABC asked her or what specific incident or incidents Holmes is referring to when she says she regrets upsetting Remini, but aren't you dying to know?

While taping auditions for The Voice UK, Boy George and fellow judges Will.i.am, Ricky Wilson and Paloma Faith were discussing which popular performers they have worked with in the past when Faith mentioned Prince.

That is when Boy George reportedly brought the taping to a standstill, claiming he had a much more intimate relationship with the singer.

"He just went, 'Oh darling, I've slept with him,'" a spokesperson for The Voice told People today.

Say whaaat?

"We just couldn't believe what he had come out with — and the guys in the gallery were beside themselves," a production source told The Sun.

"The crowd went absolutely wild because they thought they had just witnessed a massive celebrity exclusive. The other judges thought it was brilliant, particularly Will.i.am. He kept coming up to Boy George and high-fiving him, which just set the crowd off again."

Mmmm hmmm. Likely story, that poster bit. But the official line from The Voice is that Boy George was just kidding, and they are sticking to it.

Kendra on Top finale: An insider reveals where the troubled couple stands now

Last week, Baskett walked out the door, leaving Wilkinson to wonder if the rift in their relationship had finally reached the point of no repair. After chatting with her dad, Wilkinson decides to hop on a plane to bust in on Baskett's meeting. Only this was one romantic gesture that was not well received.

More: Kendra Wilkinson and Hank Baskett might finally be done for good (VIDEO)

Seattle or bust

After a few minutes of incredibly awkward introductions, Baskett excuses himself so he can get to the bottom of Wilkinson's impromptu appearance. "What the hell? What are you doing here?" he asks.

It's then that Wilkinson realizes she may have pushed Baskett too far. Despite pouring her heart out to Baskett atop the Space Needle where he proposed many moons ago, Wilkinson is sent back to Calabasas so Baskett can think things over. Despite being a bummer in that moment, it's actually a side of Baskett that his wife has sorely missed.

"Hank was very assertive and strong-minded when Kendra met him and when he was playing for the NFL. That was one of the key reasons she was attracted to him. He took charge and he protected her," explains Kendra on Top executive producer Kevin Burns. "But after he quit playing, Hank grew less confident in himself. He lost his identity. So Kendra hasn’t seen the assertive side of Hank for a while. It’s actually the side of him she had been hoping for and waiting to see again."

Time for a tailgate wedding

Fast forward a week, and it's Wilkinson's dad, Eric Wilkinson, and his fiancee Amy's big day. Wilkinson explains that Baskett's calls have been very perfunctory — he checks on the kids, but that's it. She wants to save her marriage, but will she be able to reconcile the football player she once loved with the gaming pro Baskett is now?

"Kendra doesn't want a football player. She wants a man. She wants someone confident in himself — regardless of his profession. She's never been about status or money. When she moved into the Playboy Mansion at 18, she didn't even know who Hugh Hefner was. All she knew was that he was strong, successful and confident," says Burns. "In any event, Kendra never stopped loving Hank (last season proved that), but she has been very worried about him. It's possible her 'acting out' and flirting with other guys was her way of forcing him to be stronger and more resolved. She wanted him to fight for her."

As Wilkinson and Hall arrive in San Diego, it's clear Wilkinson is wondering whether Baskett will fight for their marriage one more time. But there's a wedding to be had, so Wilkinson and Hall give Eric and Amy a few gifts.

More: Kendra Wilkinson's father-daughter night at the Playboy mansion was a disaster

Little do the exhibitionists (they met at a nudist colony or, as Burns says, "they prefer 'clothing optional' community") realize, Wilkinson's real present is waiting in the wings: her dad's long-estranged sister, Kris Wilkinson, an incredible musician who'll be playing the ceremony music. The siblings have a touching reunion, and they're still close today. Explains Burns, "It was a very special moment, and Kris is an incredible person on every level. Going to the wedding was not easy for her (as she had several work commitments in Nashville, including the CMA Awards), but it was important to her to be there. Eric was really overcome."

Score one for Wilkinson.

On what can only be described as the party bus carting the crew to the Chargers game for the ceremony, the Wilkinson fam lives up to their party gene — so much so, Hall admits, "I'm having trouble keeping up." There's a stripper pole, plenty of beer and live music... what's not to love?

Baskett arrives and the ceremony begins. There, as Eric and Amy pledge their life to one another, Wilkinson knows without a shadow of a doubt that she wants to be married to Baskett.

Taking the next steps

According to Burns, very few people even realized they were quietly saving their marriage in those moments. "It was a very incredible moment when we saw them kiss during the ceremony," shares Burns.

Now that they are committed to making it work, should they have a conversation with Little Hank about what this means for the family? SheKnows Parenting Expert Lori Pace weighs in, saying, "I think that the move to save the family is admirable. With Hollywood marriages seemingly struggling to make it work, I like that they are trying. As far as Little Hank goes, yes, a conversation on his level could be helpful."

This Pace knows from personal experience. "When I divorced, I sat my children down and told them what I could without scaring them. The most important thing, I think, is to allow Hank to ask questions, and then answer them as best they can. He deserves as much uninterrupted time to express his feelings as he can get. Seeing Mom and Dad go from crying and fighting to hugging and kissing can be very confusing."

Of course, that convo might be premature — shortly after the wedding, they file into their marriage therapist's office looking more than a little morose. "We're kind of at a separation point again," Baskett somberly tells Dr. Meise.

Psych! The couple was only kidding. Baskett only wants a self-imposed separation, because Wilkinson quite literally can't keep her hands (or anything else) off of him. Ultimately, the session ends simply because Dr. Meise can't seem to break up their intimacy hug. And while it's nice to see them clicking again, is operating in such extremes a reliable barometer for relationship health?

Not necessarily, says SheKnows Dating and Relationship Expert Laurel House.

"Kendra is known for her extreme personality. And while passion can be great when it's good, the fluctuation — from high to low — that is often inherent within a passionate person can be detrimental to a relationship. They are good for now, but the question is: Were they able to heal their relationship from the bottom up? Did they fill the many holes and cracks in the foundation of their relationship? Or is their extreme passion just another Band-Aid on top?"

Healing those fractures takes real time. "Unless they both individually and as a couple stay committed to working on their relationship in order to let it completely be healed, repaired and then strengthened," says House, "even the smallest of shakeups or even misunderstandings can rock them apart again."

Where things stand

Mere minutes later, however, the last commentary Wilkinson and Baskett reveal is the decision to take a break from therapy altogether. This move could be problematic, cautions House, if the work on their relationship doesn't continue.

"Maintenance therapy is important," she confirms. "But Kendra and Hank aren't yet at the maintenance phase. They need to take their therapy off the screen in order to truly dig deep into territory that they may even subconsciously be unwilling to expose on national TV. It's not about doing more therapy — it's about doing deeper, more intense therapy."

More: Kendra Wilkinson and Hank make serious strides in their struggling sex life

Whether Wilkinson and Baskett choose to follow through in that respect remains to be seen, but not through the lens of reality TV. At least for the time being.

"Right now, all Kendra and Hank want to do is be a family again. Their focus is on their kids (e.g. school, sports, Halloween, holidays, etc.), who are growing up too fast," Burns tells us. "Kendra has done reality television for 11 years now. More than 200 episodes, if you count The Girls Next Door and her other previous series. Eight months a year for 11 years is a long time to have a 15-person television crew in your house. We aren't surprised that she and Hank want to enjoy being together for a while."

But — and it's a big but — Burns adds, "They're very happy... that's for sure. "

The masterful piece of ingenuity is called a Kotatsu and it's responsible for how some people in Japan keep themselves warm in the colder months. It's also one of the reasons why they can stay in the comfort of their beds all day and not feel guilty about it.

I've been waiting for someone to invent this bed-couch-table my entire life and I'm glad to see I've lived to see the day.

Taking a look at the photos featured on a popular Japanese online store, the Kotatsu simply looks like a coffee table that someone has decided to fall asleep under, probably after some wine time.

But it is so much more than that. Basically, it's a low-sitting couch with a table in the centre and a blanket draped over the sides. It sounds so simple, almost too simple. But therein lies the magic of this not-nearly-popular-enough home decor piece.

Underneath the table is the pièce de résistance, an electric heater. An electric heater! Which, of course, keeps your toes, legs and the rest of your body cosy and warm, while the table allows you to get along with your day's work, as long as said work doesn't involve you moving, walking or getting up to pee.

Seriously, though, this has got to be one of the best set ups for a lazy weekend, doing nothing but drinking pots of tea and reading all those books you never have time to stick your nose into. Problem solved, book lovers, tea drinkers and maybe wine-os, too. This one's for you.

And it appears that even our furry little friends think this one is a hit.

It’s really no surprise, as Saran has been posting photos of the couple for the last several weeks, and if you scroll through the comments, Abraham often has loving words to say to her man. She even refers to him as the "best #BF," on one occasion (BF we are assuming means boyfriend).

Let’s take a second to talk about Abraham’s Halloween costume before we move on, shall we?

Abraham decided to go as Belle, our favorite Beast- and book-loving princess from Beauty and the Beast, and her getup was… different, to say the least.

Or... original, maybe? I’m not quite sure how to describe it, so I’ll just show you.

Saran was also Abraham’s biggest cheerleader during her stint on Celebrity Big Brother UK, posting often about what was going on with her on the show, and encouraging fans to vote for her.

Have the tables turned for this couple? During the last season of Teen Mom, it was Abraham who wanted to take things to the next level, often talking about how she wanted to get engaged and move in with her boyfriend of less than a year, while Saran seemed standoffish about moving that fast. During one episode, he said he wanted to wait several years before moving forward, which prompted Abraham to reply, “That’s for ugly girls, babe. That’s for ugly girls."
