Heidi Klum addresses reports she was dissing ex-husband Seal's parenting

In the latest cover story for Redbook, Klum got candid about how life with her kids has changed since she and Seal officially went their separate ways in 2012.

More: Sorry, Heidi Klum and Seal are not getting back together

"Obviously, things have changed, but they haven't changed drastically," she told the magazine. "[Seal] was never your typical dad who left for work in the morning with his briefcase and would be home by dinnertime every night. He traveled a lot. The kids knew it was part of his job. I'm a mom and dad at the same time."

Her statements — particularly the last few lines — quickly drew the ire of the Internet. Some perceived Klum's comment as a dis at Seal and took to Twitter to condemn her attitude.

Now, Klum is taking the time to clear up the controversy herself, clarifying to People that the comments were not meant as an insult to Seal. "It is frustrating to me that some other media outlets are taking what was said in the article to suggest that I was aiming to malign my children's father. Because I was not!" she said. "In the article, I say that, as a single parent, 'I'm a mom and a dad at the same time.' And that is the case when I'm alone with our kids... and I assume the same rings true when they are with their dad."

She went on to explain, "As a single parent, you have so many roles — you are wearing all the hats. The mom hat, the dad hat, the chef hat, the teacher hat, the disciplinarian hat, the clown hat and the work hat. You have your hands full, but you just try your best because it's all about raising happy and healthy kids. That's all we both want."

Looks like there's no drama to speculate over after all.

More: Once Upon a Time's new savior may steal the spotlight from Emma

On Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly announced that Adam Croasdell will play Hook's dad. Croasdell is best known for his role on EastEnders, but he's also appeared on Supernatural, NCIS and Hot in Cleveland, among many others. There aren't too many details being released about his character, but here are six things that have been revealed.

Hook's dad is coming to OUAT

Hook's dad is coming to OUAT

1. He'll appear before the winter break

As OUAT creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis announced at New York Comic Con, Hook's father will show up in the episode before the long winter break.

2. He abandoned Hook

The biggest detail fans know about Hook's dad is that he abandoned him in the middle of the night. It doesn't sound like Hook and his dad had the best relationship.

3. His name could be Davy Jones

Hook's dad's name has yet to be unveiled, but seeing as Hook's real name is Killian Jones, does that mean his father is Davy Jones?

More: Once Upon a Time: The Dark One is forging an alliance that could get messy

4. He'll appear in flashbacks

Hook's dad won't show up in real time or in Storybrooke (or so it seems), but he will be seen in flashbacks, TVLine reports.

5. His episode will feature a Hook/Evil Queen adventure

In addition to the flashbacks, the episode will include an "adventure with Hook and the Evil Queen," Horowitz told TVLine. Anyone else excited to see Hook and Regina joining forces?

6. He'll appear alongside child Hook

Hook's dad will appear in an episode "examining the character's childhood," TVLine also reports. Kitsis also confirmed, "We’ll see Hook as a little boy." Fans know how cute Hook is as an adult, so just imagine him as a child.

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8/7c on ABC.

Hospital uses 'cuddle hormone' to help babies in NICU

Lucette Parent was one of the first volunteers to join the Baby Cuddler Program. “I love babies, so when I heard about the program, I said, ‘Sign me up,’” says Parent. “When I come in for my volunteer shift, I know I am going to give out a lot of love.”

“Babies can really benefit from someone holding them, talking to them, singing to them,” says Sue McMahon, program team manager, NICU.

In an exclusive online segment of Keeping Canada Alive, a CBC series that captures a day in the life of health care across Canada, they feature a few volunteer baby cuddlers in action.

Even one hour of cuddling a day can have a dramatic impact on a premature baby’s physical health and stress level, and the effects seem to last for many years. “At times, the babies can be really fussy, but after a few minutes, they start to relax,” says Parent. “You can tell that they are breathing easier. Just from the body contact, they settle down and often fall asleep.” Physical contact is important for babies to develop, grow and gain strength.

The nurses and other health care providers are also committed to the program. “It’s hard to be a busy nurse and see a baby crying who may just need to be held, or rocked or talked to,” says McMahon. “They know babies can benefit from the cuddlers.”

RHOC's Meghan Edmonds calls out Vicki Gunvalson on another lie

The majority of the season revolved around Vicki Gunvalson's boyfriend, Brooks Ayers' cancer storyline and whether he is really sick or not, and Edmonds had no qualms about sticking her nose into the drama and making definitive statements about Ayers — and Gunvalson — being a liar.

Meghan Edmonds tweet 1

Meghan Edmonds tweet 1

No one likes being called a liar. Heck, most people don't even enjoy calling other people liars, but Edmonds has yet again publicly accused Gunvalson of not telling the truth. This time, however, the situation has nothing to do with Ayers and everything to do with another controversial OG, Jeana Keough.

More: RHOC superlatives: Tamra Judge, Shannon Beador fork out hilarious awards (VIDEO)

This week's feud started — where else — on social media, when Gunvalson posted a photo of herself getting dinner with Keough with the dig-of-a-caption, "Surrounding myself with the original HW that actually is not evil."

Vicki Gunvalson insta

Never one to back down from a fight, Edmonds responded, "You told me (and all other HWs) you thought Jeana was disgusting and refused to film w her after your mom died," according to Us Weekly.

Gunvalson wasn't having Edmonds' comment, and quickly took to Twitter to hit back.

Vicki Gunvalson tweet 1

So basically, Edmonds called out Gunvalson for saying Keough is a true friend, when in reality, she's been talking shit behind Keough's back to the other Housewives.

Fans were also quick to point out the fake vibe of Gunvalson's friendship with Keough.

Vicki Gunvalson tweet 2

Vicki Gunvalson tweet 2

I mean, really though, who is in the wrong here? Everyone knows that Gunvalson's relationship with Keough has been rocky, so for her to flat-out fib about that doesn't make a lot of sense.

On the other hand, why the heck does Edmonds give a rat's patoot that Gunvalson is breaking bread with someone she might not care for that much? Pretty sure that's a daily occurrence for the women of the show.

Drama, drama, drama, ladies. But as Tamra Judge so aptly put it to SheKnows about Gunvalson, "That's what she's paid the big bucks for."

8 Ways you can help children with special needs enjoy Halloween

$
0
0

For Parents of Children With Special Needs:

1. Select a costume that combines comfort with fun

Many times, costumes have elements that make them difficult for children with sensory sensitivities. Whether it’s itchy fabric, multiple layers or confusion about how to put it on, the list goes on. If your child tends to be sensitive to certain fabrics or textures, it may be a good idea to plan ahead and really look into how he or she can have the coolest costume while making sure he or she can comfortably stay in it for the evening.

2. A Halloween plan ahead of time

Many children with special needs do better with a schedule or routine, especially when it is reviewed ahead of time. Think about how you would like the day to go. Since Halloween is on a Saturday this year, it is important to decide if you’re devoting the entire day to holiday festivities or if you want to limit it to a large chunk of the afternoon or evening. With that, plan out time to put on costumes, take photos, visit with friends, go trick-or-treating and — of course — eat safe and pre-monitored candy! Lastly, if your child is more of a visual learner, you may want to make the schedule with pictures so he or she can follow along and really understand how the day should go.

3. Review positive behaviors early, before trick-or-treating

Children with special needs often require what we call “pre-teaching” prior to an important event or holiday. That means reviewing expectations before actually engaging in a task. If you want your child to ring the doorbell and say “trick-or-treat!” and “thank you,” you’ll need to practice it at least a couple of days prior.

If you meet a trick-or-treater with special needs:

You may not even realize that the child at your door has special needs. You may automatically think that the child has poor manners or is being rude. However, a lot of times, children with special needs are not purposefully acting that way, or they are acting that way for a reason beyond their control.

1. These kids might have difficulties with social skills

While it is polite to say please and thank you, manners may not be the focus for the child. He may be practicing walking with other children or ringing the doorbell. Manners may be a later goal, so try to be understanding.

2. Some special needs kids struggle with self-regulation

If a child runs into your home the minute you open the door, she may see something interesting or fun she cannot resist exploring. While we want children to manage their impulsivity, this is easier for some than others. Take cues from her parent and patiently guide the child to the treats — and praise her for following any directions or guidance. Her parent will thank you for it.

3. Be sensitive to speech difficulties

Not every child’s language skills are as fully developed as you may expect. If a child does not say the requisite “trick-or-treat,” there is a strong chance that it’s due to lack of ability rather than defiance or non-compliance.

4. Be aware of sensory sensitivities

If you really get into the Halloween spirit and decorate your doorway with spooky or loud objects, this may be scary or particularly difficult for children who struggle with a variety of sensory inputs. While you should still be festive in your own way, this is something to consider as you prepare for the holiday.

5. Pay attention to food allergies

As we become more aware of a variety of food allergies, it is always a good idea to have a non-food treat in your Halloween basket so all children can enjoy the holiday. Whether it’s stickers, cute Halloween erasers or something similar, there are often inexpensive options to consider that optimize inclusion on such an exciting day.

Sweet-and-sour fish is the delicious Asian dish you haven't tried yet

$

Sweet-and-sour sauce with veggies covering a whole fish may not be your average dish, but any Asian food lover will tell you to grab that fork and dig in. As the sauce's name promises, it is sweet and sour, so expect a blend of these two flavors. The best way to enjoy this dish is with steamed white rice, because it subdues the contrasting flavors a bit (and also because that's the way it's eaten in Asia).

This is a very easy recipe to make, and anyone can do it. You don't need a wok or any other special utensils. Just brown the fish in an ample-size saucepan, and put all the remaining ingredients in another pan to make the sauce. Pour the sauce onto the fish, and then your meal is ready. Easy, isn't it?

Asian sweet-and-sour fish recipe

Serves 2-3

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 25 minutes | Total time: 40 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound whole white fish (gilthead sea bream, branzino, sea bass, red snapper, halibut), scaled and gutted
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 medium white onion, sliced
  • 1/8 cup ginger, julienned
  • 2 medium carrots, julienned
  • 1-1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • Spring onions, roughly chopped
  • Steamed white rice (for serving)

Directions:

  1. Coat the fish with the flour well, and shake off the excess. Sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides.
  2. In a large saucepan with olive oil over medium heat, cook the fish on both sides.
  3. While waiting for the fish to cook, prepare the sauce in another saucepan with a little olive oil over low-medium heat. Sauté the garlic for about a minute, then add the onions, carrots and ginger. Cook for about 5 minutes. Add the water, vinegar, sugar and tomato paste, and mix well.
  4. In a small bowl, quickly mix the cornstarch with about 2 to 3 tablespoons of the sauce you are cooking, and whisk lightly with a fork until you get rid of the clumps. Pour the cornstarch mixture into the vegetables and sauce. Cook until it thickens, cover, and set aside.
  5. When the fish is cooked, drain it of the excess oil, and place it on a serving plate. Pour the sweet-and-sour sauce with the vegetables on top. Garnish with the spring onions.
  6. Serve with steamed white rice.

Kim Zolciak's former DWTS partner says she was to blame for her stroke

Now, Zolciak's former dance partner, Tony Dovolani, is saying her health woes are her own fault because she had no business competing on DWTS in the first place.

It seems that Dovolani believes that Zolciak should have hit the gym a little harder before coming to practice.

More: Kim Zolciak takes to Instagram to announce surprising new gig (PHOTO)

"Dancing with the Stars isn't something you just blink at," Dovolani told OK magazine. "Let (Kim's stroke) be a warning. You need to prepare yourself."

"So for future celebrity contestants out there, get on a treadmill, start working out before you come here and get checked out by a doctor," he continued his warning, "especially if you aren't used to that sort of physical activity."

More: Kim Zolciak remembers what's most important to her with sweet throwback pic

Dovolani's harsh words are kind of shocking, considering Zolciak does seem to follow a fitness regimen  — well, she likes to wear cute workout clothes and drink protein shakes, at the very least.

If she was unable to keep up with the rigorous exercise, we wonder how other celebs have managed to avoid incidents similar to Zolciak's in past seasons.

While Dovolani feels Zolciak's health problems were caused by lack of preparation on Zolciak's part, other rumors are swirling that her stroke was caused by her controversial waist training — which Zolciak quickly took to social media to adamantly deny.

Kim Zolciak Instagram waist training pic

Kim Zolciak Instagram waist training pic

"By no means did my waist trainer cause my blood clot or my TIA," she wrote in the caption of a new Instagram picture of herself in a waist trainer. "I would never use anything nor promote anything that I personally didn't love or something that was dangerous. I LOVE LIFE WAY TOO MUCH! and I have a whole lotta living to do. #KeepItTight #Hourglass #CommentRudeIBlockYou #HeartAwareness #THANKYOUFORALLYOURPRAYERS."

Do you think Dovolani's words were too harsh, or was he right to use Zolciak as an example to warn future contestants?

Kendra Wilkinson takes her dad to a Playboy party, and it's disastrous

$

The episode starts off on a comedic note, though, with Wilkinson taking bestie Jessica Hall to get her very first colonic. The ladies have Hugh Hefner's Midsummer Night Dream party coming up, and they need to evacuate their bowels in the name of 5 pounds.

When Wilkinson lies on the table, the technician explains it's best to be, uh, hydrated. To which Hall quips, "Fill 'er up." Then, when it's her turn, Hall exclaims, "How far do I have to stick the thing up there?" And, seeing the tube, "I hate everybody right now." These girls are hilarious!

Meeting a new member of the fam

Wilkinson is still basking in her post-colonic glow on the patio when Baskett comes outside to remind her that her dad, Eric, will be there soon. Wilkinson and Baskett are both a bit nervous, given that Eric warned them before his arrival that he had a big surprise.

And, well, he wasn't lying. "This is Amy... and Amy is my fiancée," he announces to a rather shocked Wilkinson and Baskett.

Understandably, it's a lot to take in. "I just reunited with my Dad, and I'm not ready to share him yet," Wilkinson says before conceding, "I wanna like Amy. I really do. I mean, she's gonna marry my dad. So my goal is to get to know the woman who is going to be my stepmom."

She's going to have to figure out a way to come to peace with the decision sooner or later, since Eric asks Baskett to be his best man — and Amy wants Wilkinson to be in her wedding party, too. Wilkinson laughs hysterically, 'cause that's kind of her thing.

In a moment of foreshadowing, Baskett tells the camera in an aside that he predicts he and Wilkinson will actually be the parents in this group dynamic. Based on the wild and crazy nude photo Eric and Amy show off, that seems like a safe assumption.

The Playboy party that really went south

As her first act as a bridesmaid/future stepdaughter, Wilkinson invites Eric and Amy to tag along to the Midsummer Night Dream party at the Playboy Mansion. When Amy gushes over this, explaining how she has been obsessed with Playboy for years, little red flags go up in Wilkinson's brain, prompting her to distrust Amy's intentions.

At the party, Wilkinson, Hall and their respective husbands are pumped to "get down and dirty, like old times." A few minutes and several snapshots of celebrity partygoers later, Wilkinson and Baskett are home in bed at a relatively reasonable hour.

Their early curfew apparently had everything to do with Eric's future bride. "She was wasted when we left," Wilkinson tells Baskett. "It's like she was trying too hard. I had the misery of being with her all night... Oh my God. Oh. It was brutal, dude."

Then, the phone rings — and Baskett's prediction about parenting the parents comes true. "Kendra, I'm still at the Grotto right now, and Amy has had a few drinks," Eric tells Wilkinson. "It appears Amy is in police custody." Well, that escalated fast.

The next episode kicks off with a dutiful Baskett (the only person in their party of four who didn't drink at the mansion) headed out to rescue Amy and Eric from police custody. Wilkinson calls Hall, because what girl doesn't call her BFF when she's got some juicy gossip?

The next morning, Baskett tells Wilkinson he rolled back home around 5 a.m., thanks to Eric and Amy's shenanigans. But with both he and Wilkinson still exhausted from the drama, Baskett has to head out of town for a week on business.

Mommies' morning in

Hall comes over after Baskett leaves to help Wilkinson sort through her feelings and, you know, gab about what went down the night before. It's pretty adorable seeing Wilkinson and Hall gush over getting their too-cute-for-words kids together, but it does make you wonder if there is a correlation between Kendra's confidence and the amount of time she spends at home with her family. At the moment, her confidence is high, and she is spending more QT with her kiddos.

"As a mom to three children, I find that my confidence is at its highest when I am with them," echoes SheKnows parenting expert Lori Pace. "So, when I am away from them for a while, I actually have less confidence and happiness. Maybe I am wired differently, but spending quality time with the kids should be a priority over everything else."

While having Wilkinson around is invariably a positive for the kids, realizing how happy she is when she's away is potentially damaging, says Pace. "I think that if they see that Mommy seems happier away from them, it can only do harm to their own self-esteem. However, given the drama over the last year or so happening at home, I can understand why she would not be as happy there. But, for the kids' sake, she really should find a way to spend quality time with them no matter her confidence levels. She will regret it later if she does not, I think."

After Hall leaves and Wilkinson meets with her dad to talk, she ultimately decides she can't stand a rift with her dad. And since Eric reiterates how much he loves Amy and wants her to be part of the family, Wilkinson plays nice when Amy calls later to apologize. So, even if Amy did embarrass Wilkinson in front of Kylie Jenner and Justin Bieber, she decides to forgive her.

The calm before the storm

But even though it seemed to be smooth sailing between Wilkinson and Baskett this week, SheKnows dating and relationship expert Laurel House cautions intimacy can be confused for recovery.

"Hank and Kendra seemed to turn a corner in their connection by re-sparking some of the intimacy in their relationship," she explains. "But sex is a Band-Aid. In order to experience real healing, both of them need to be dedicated to repairing the holes. If they don't, their relationship is like Swiss cheese, and sometimes those holes are exposed, causing a fight."

Judging by next week's teaser, in which Baskett storms out on Wilkinson, that assessment feels spot-on. The good news, though, is that this is just another leg of the healing process.

"They are still very fragile and, therefore, prone to misunderstandings... and even experiencing huge blowouts. And that's normal. Two steps forward, one step back. It will take time before there is true safety, consistency and trust in their relationship."

So what if, after all is said and done (after the Marriage Boot Camp, the individual counseling, the sex therapy), they still can't land on the same page? What do they try next?

"What Kendra and Hank really need is time away from the camera," says House. "They need a cameras-off couple's retreat that allows them to be truly vulnerable, stripping down their walls — many of which are maintained for the sake of their public personas — and focus on their foundation."

According to Cosmopolitan, the pros there are now using electrocurrent technology to help lift and contour the body with just a few jolts. For $150, the founding aesthetician of SB Skin, Shamara Bondaroff, will cover you in stick pads and connect you to the microcurrent machine, known as the CACI Quantum.

But no, you won't feel like you're being electrocuted, according to Bondaroff. Instead it'll feel like a mild vibration that stimulates the muscles to contract, just as if you're doing squats. Apparently one treatment is like doing 360 squats.

Microcurrent isn't only for your butt, though. According to Bondaroff, it's good for improving lymphatic drainage, decreasing acne and treating sun damage, among other benefits.

Hard work is every bit as important as raw talent, and while Diaunte may struggle with triple pirouettes, that won't always be the case. The scary reason you should think twice about adopting sibling puppies

$
0
0

But then I heard about something called littermate syndrome. According to The Bark, littermate syndrome occurs when two puppies' deep bond impairs their ability to grasp the nuances of both canine-canine and human-canine interaction. While the evidence is anecdotal many trainers, behaviorists and breeders acknowledge that it's real.

Puppies with littermate syndrome depend on one another and tend to ignore their owners entirely when presented with the option of paying attention to one another — as if the humans aren't in the room. They may also be fearful of unfamiliar people or dogs and even just situations or stimuli they're not familiar with. They may even fight incessantly.

Tena Parker, certified professional dog trainer with Success Just Clicks Dog Training in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, says the name can be deceiving. "Two dogs who are adopted/purchased at/around the same time can absolutely display concerning behaviors attributed to littermate syndrome, regardless of age." So it's not just puppies you need to worry about. While the sex of the dogs doesn't seem to affect whether littermate syndrome will happen, Parker notes that some breeds do have a propensity for more same-sex aggression. She also warns that a lack of symptoms up front doesn't mean fighting won't eventually happen. She's had clients who's dogs might scuffle from time to time but everything was fine until an all-out-brawl broke out after sexual maturity.

Typically, Parker says, littermate syndrome fighting manifests as one dog being more confident and the other being more submissive. These dogs have an unhealthy attachment. It may seem like innocent puppy play at first and they may seem like they love each other most of the time, but eventually, the more confident dog may become an outright bully. They'll guard things like food and toys or even push the more submissive dog away from attention. Parker notes this can create a very stressful environment for the more submissive dog. It's likely not surprising to the humans reading this that the submissive dog then tends to cling to the more confident dog even more.

Is littermate syndrome inevitable?

No. Littermate syndrome can be avoided (note the italics on can). First, you can't ignore the warning signs. Just because it doesn't seem that bad now doesn't mean you shouldn't take it seriously. Doing so may be the very thing that prevents it from getting out of control. Given what the preventative measures are, the worst that can happen if you're wrong… is that you're wrong.

If it develops, you have a much harder road ahead that will likely mean lot's of stress for you and potentially (if note probably) rehoming one of your pups.

Your dogs need to learn to spend time away from one another. Separate feedings, separate beds or crates, separate training, socialization with other dogs and humans. That doesn't mean you have to quarantine them from one another for a year, just that they need to learn normal interactions with humans and dogs, which may (probably does) require them to be apart.

Since I've had the issue myself, I asked Parker about taking treats away when the more confident dog takes them from the submissive pup. She advises against it because it might cause the dog to guard their treats from the human (which can be a problem if you dog gets something they aren't supposed to have). If it becomes a problem, she say to give them treats separately.

Owners might also have issues with aggressive play, especially with puppies. Parker says, "I always suggest owners modifying play that they are not comfortable with — if it makes them nervous, interrupting the play and slowing things down isn't a bad thing. That being said, I try not to interrupt play that is appropriate, though perhaps rowdy, because I want to let them do some good communicating."

How do you know? "One way to 'check in' with the dogs to see if the play is still mutual is to calmly restrain the aggressor," she advises, "if the other dog comes back for more, it was likely mutual play. I would do everything in my power to not allow them to rehearse any behavior that I felt could easily switch into a fight."

If you have sibling (or even non-sibling) dogs you believe may have littermate syndrome, it's probably a good idea to get the help of a professional trainer or behaviorist as soon as possible.

And always remember that you can't assume all is lost because there's a thing called "littermate syndrome." All the hard work you might have to do pays off is you're willing to do it.

Shark Tank's male investors confess to having hygiene problems

The recent trend of repackaging ordinary products and marketing them as "manly" has officially reached Shark Tank, where it has achieved a reception far more positive than viewers ever could have anticipated. The concept of Dude Wipes — referred to on Shark Tank as "a more civilized way to handle your daily business" — elicited a lot of skepticism on Twitter, but the Sharks were surprisingly intrigued.

More: Shark Tank: Barbara Corcoran accused of sexism

The success of the Dudes' pitch may have resulted, in part, from their sheer confidence. These guys were not at all embarrassed about the fact that they were essentially peddling butt wipes for stinky men. Instead, they acted as if their wipes were the Dudes' gift to God. The corny, yet confident pitch elicited smiles from several Sharks, who clearly appreciated the break from the usual stammering of nervous entrepreneurs.

There is something to be said for an entertaining pitch, but ultimately, the product offered by the Dudes was not all that impressive. Barbara Corcoran observed that the wipes were too fragile to compete against leading baby wipes — and that they were definitely not enough to stand up to the use of her husband or any other big dude.

A few of the more skeptical Sharks changed their tune after they realized that the Dudes landed a huge contract with Kroger. But even this tidbit was not enough to convince Twitter users that the Dude Wipes were worth the investment of Mark Cuban, Kevin O'Leary or Robert Herjavec. All three expressed interest in the product, ignoring Corcoran's repeated comments regarding the similarity of this product to baby wipes, as well as its much higher price tag. The disbelief among Shark Tank fans continued to grow, especially when Cuban landed a deal with the Dudes.

The Dude Wipes are just ridiculous enough that they could prove profitable, but they remain among the least impressive of the products featured on the latest episode of Shark Tank. And that's saying something, because the episode also featured the EZPeeZ toilet seat. Hopefully, next week's episode will leave the bathroom and return to the boardroom.

The Jacksons: 5 Red flags that make viewers wonder if the show is staged

When The Jacksons: Next Generation premiered on Lifetime, viewers touted the show's authenticity, loving the fact that the Jackson family was so open, so raw. And the way the Jacksons broke the fourth wall and talked to the cameras, that was icing on the ever-so-perfectly decorated cake. So it was almost refreshing tuning in to watch what seemed to be a relatable family living their daily lives, putting their glittered gloves on one hand at a — well, on one hand — just like everyone else.

But as the show goes on, fans are starting to see that The Jacksons: Next Generation is looking less and less like their own families and more like any other reality TV show, where "reality" is whatever they make it. Here are just a few of the red flags that leave us wondering.

A season of firsts

Not only was it the first time TJ Jackson took time to do something special for Frances, his wife and the mother of his four children, but it was during filming that the men decided to start doing an annual camping trip in order to bond — sitting around the campfire and talking about all of the ways the Jackson family is wonderful and why the world should be forever grateful to them all. (Did they really try to take credit for twerking?)

Keeping Up with the Kardashians... over and over again

In case you didn't hear that hefty name-drop in the first episode, TJ Jackson made sure that everyone knew he dated Kim Kardashian in high school by the second episode of the series. By the third episode, not only were fans ready to sanctify Kim for helping the Jackson family, but two more Kardashians — Kourtney and Kris Jenner — were making appearances, and audiences were again reminded that the families have close ties, that Kris Jenner has no filter (when it pays not to) and, oh, that TJ and Kim dated in high school.

More: The Jacksons: What did Kim Kardashian know about the missing Jackson memorabilia?

Kris Jenner
Image: Lifetime

Now we remember the memorabilia

In the second episode — or the second time TJ mentioned that he dated Kim Kardashian, however you're keeping track of the show — the men were introduced to a fan who had an amazing (read: creepy) collection of Jackson memorabilia that he acquired years ago when it was auctioned off. It was Kim who connected TJ with the gentleman, letting TJ know there was a possibility that the family could get the lost heirlooms back. While everyone thanked Kim for helping out her friends (and ex-boyfriend — because they dated once), it wasn't made clear when Kim actually committed this random act of kindness, which left people scratching their heads. How long was TJ holding on to that information before surprising his brothers? Was he waiting for the right time, meaning the time when the cameras would be around?

About that chick who's been claiming she's a Jackson...

Another question of timing and authenticity was during episode "third mention of the Kardashian family," when TJ, Taj and Taryll made the decision to track down the woman who has, for years, claimed to be their sister; saying that her mother had an affair with Tito Jackson. Noting that their aunts and uncles never bothered with such rumors, but saying that they did so to protect the family name, the men sought out Ms.Tanay Jackson, cameras in tow, to confront her and find out why she continues to tell people that they're siblings.

A funny thing happened on the way to the DNA test...

When they finally meet up with Tanay and she gives them seemingly legit info that supports her claims, it appears that the guys only planned to speak with her to get to the bottom of things. It's Tanay who suggested a DNA test. And who doesn't love a televised DNA test, right? (Right, Khloé Kardashian?)

More: Klhoé Kardashian and Lamar Odom timeline: 12 times she stood by his side

Well, as it turns out, Tanay Jackson doesn't love a televised DNA test. Because, after a random (wink, wink) run-in with Uncle Jermaine Jackson as they were walking into the testing facility, Tanay started feeling ill. Rightfully so, because... really? Jermaine Jackson was just wandering by when they landed in L.A. from New York City?

Once she rebounded, Tanay went to Taj, whispering in his ear, asking if it would be OK if they kept the test results private, just between the four of them.

We'd like to say that that was pretty telling, but it looks like there won't be any official telling until next week's episode, when the results are revealed.

They're the Jacksons

It may be somewhat disappointing to see the same reality TV antics, but what viewers seem to have forgotten when delving into this "docudrama" is the reason that we're delving into it to begin with. It's the Jackson family. New generation, yes, but as TJ has stated several times in the show's few episodes — Did you hear that he dated Kim Kardashian? — as a Jackson, there are certain things you just know. It's part of what they're taught and who they are. Perfection is expected. Cameras are always watching. Everything is always a show, a production filled with drama. Is that drama being controlled? For that, maybe we should ask Janet. Ms. Jackson, if ya nasty!

Do you think The Jacksons: Next Generation is "raw" or "routine" in the realm of reality TV?

3 Reasons not to trash your recycling habit

$

That's why an editorial in last week's The New York Times got me fired up. It was written by John Tierney and claimed we’ve been pointlessly indoctrinating our children to recycle when we should all just throw our yogurt containers in the trash so they can return safely into the earth — at the landfill — and become a park.

This gave me major pause. His opinion that recycling doesn’t make environmental or financial sense just doesn't sit right with those of us who have been recycling for years.

Don't be alarmed! It’s still OK to teach your kids to recycle.

My colleagues and I at the Closed Loop Fund dug deeper into some of the arguments, starting with Tierney's first question: Are you in fact wasting your time? (Spoiler alert: you are not). You can all see the dirty details of his misinformation and the real data here.

In the meantime, here's the CliffsNotes version you need to know:

1, Tierney's argument: Recycling doesn’t make sense financially.

The truth: Communities across the United States spend over $5 billion in tax dollars throwing garbage in the landfills. On the other hand, when a community recycles, it not only avoids that hefty fee, but often makes money on the recycled material.

2. Tierney’s argument: Recycling materials, like plastic bottles, doesn't make environmental sense.

The truth: According to EPA calculations, recycling plastic will reduce 31,015,624 metric tons of greenhouse gases — that’s equivalent to taking 6 million cars off the road — more than the number of cars registered in the county of Los Angeles!

3. Tierney’s argument: It’s just not worth it.

The truth and bottom line: Recycling is one of the easiest ways to make a daily, positive impact for the environment and teach kids to be good citizens. Overachiever points for reusing and for buying products with recycled content in them.

How to create stunning decorative displays with what you have at home

1. Create a formal living room vignette

In your adult-friendly living room, gather your favorite collectibles to display on a coffee table, side table or fireplace mantel.

<div><a href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/1935772/A-Modern-Gem-traditional-living-room-new-york'><img src='http://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/a5d11605009bf86e_8-6086/traditional-living-room.jpg' border=0 width='500' height='454' /></a></div><div style='color:#444;'><small><a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional/living-room' >Traditional Living Room</a> by <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/professionals/interior-designer/c/New-York--NY' >New York Interior Designers & Decorators</a> <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/pro/chriscburns/christopher-burns-interiors' >Christopher Burns Interiors</a></small></div>

  • Anchor the surface. For color, use a tray, a placemat or even a large coffee table book. If you prefer shine, start with a round mirror or a mirrored tray.
  • Add height. A formal vignette provides the perfect opportunity to bring out that gorgeous crystal vase you received as a wedding gift.
  • Counter the height. Use other items to complement the tall decor. A short stack of small books or pile of clever coasters does the trick.
  • Balance it out. Add a miniature globe, large seashell, decorative clock or beloved framed photo to round out the mix.

2. Create a casual family room vignette

In an oft-used family room space, a vignette is more about function. An ottoman provides the perfect surface for a collection of must-haves.

<div><a href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/13761496/Home-on-the-Waves-Cohasset-victorian-living-room-boston'><img src='http://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/ee314eb103a7c29c_8-2311/victorian-living-room.jpg' border=0 width='500' height='334' /></a></div><div style='color:#444;'><small><a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/victorian/living-room' >Victorian Living Room</a> by <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/professionals/interior-designer/c/Weston--MA' >Weston Interior Designers & Decorators</a> <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/pro/katierosenfeld/katie-rosenfeld-design' >Katie Rosenfeld Design</a></small></div>

  • Start with a tray or basket. The key is to provide a firm surface on which to create your casual display.
  • Add some oxygen. A favorite green plant, a stalk of bamboo or some cut flowers give height and color to your casual vignette.
  • Corral disappearing items. Now that you've provided a fixed home for them, the TV and game remotes should never again go missing.
  • Throw in a few magazines. Family members and guests alike can enjoy easy access to the latest magazines.

3. Create a welcoming entryway vignette

Entryways can become cluttered eyesores. A thoughtful vignette will prevent this important space from becoming a dumping ground.

<div><a href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/3071242/My-Houzz-French-Country-Meets-Southern-Farmhouse-Style-in-Georgia-farmhouse-entry-new-york'><img src='http://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/c7d1548c0133dafa_8-2896/farmhouse-entry.jpg' border=0 width='500' height='332' /></a></div><div style='color:#444;'><small><a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/farmhouse/entry' >Farmhouse Entry</a> by <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/professionals/photographer/c/Brooklyn--NY' >Brooklyn Photographers</a> <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/pro/corynnepless/corynne-pless' >Corynne Pless</a></small></div>

  • Let there be light. It's comforting to walk into your home and have immediate access to the soft lighting of a table-top lamp.
  • Provide storage. A cherished piece of pottery or a simple bowl welcomes keys. A basket is ideal for incoming mail.
  • Make it pretty. Add some seasonal decor, a few eye-catching books or a framed family photo.

More: Helpful "rules" for vignette styling

4. Create a personal bedside vignette

This space is one of the first and last things you look at every day, so it should appeal to your senses.

<div><a href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/106763/Michelles-Master-Bedroom-eclectic-other-metro'><img src='http://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/06e155490d3357ff_8-4953/eclectic.jpg' border=0 width='500' height='750' /></a></div><div style='color:#444;'><small><a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/eclectic' >Eclectic Spaces</a> by <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/professionals/media-and-blogs/c/Sandy--UT' >Sandy Media & Bloggers</a> <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/pro/smhinckley/michelle-hinckley' >Michelle Hinckley</a></small></div>

  • Keep it simple. A cluttered nightstand is not conducive to a restful night's sleep. Include only those items that serve a purpose.
  • Bring everything together. Again, a tray is a terrific way to anchor the space. (And it serves as an oversized coaster for your nighttime glass of water.)
  • Don't forget the necessities. A lamp, an alarm clock, reading glasses and some reading material are all you need to complete your bedside display.

5. Create a functional home office vignette

Your home office must contain specific items that make it work for you. And it should be an appealing space that you look forward to spending time in every day.

<div><a href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/163950/Eclectic-Home-Office-eclectic-home-office-other-metro'><img src='http://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/1091ecba0daf9f74_8-6045/eclectic-home-office.jpg' border=0 width='500' height='746' /></a></div><div style='color:#444;'><small><a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/eclectic/home-office' >Eclectic Home Office</a></small></div>

  • Aim for organization. You will find it easier to stay on task if everything is in its place.
  • Hide essentials in plain sight. Office supplies can be orderly and accessible at the same time. Use a coffee mug for pencils and a decorative bowl for binder clips.
  • Go silk for safety. Don't risk ruining important papers or electronics with water. Opt for a lovely display of artificial flowers over real plants for your desktop.

6. Create a charming bookshelf vignette

Bookshelves are one of the easiest areas to style. Alternating rows of books with pops of decor creates visual interest.

<div><a href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/1024337/traditional-family-room-charleston'><img src='http://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/b011cdb10fccd538_8-8262/traditional-family-room.jpg' border=0 width='500' height='758' /></a></div><div style='color:#444;'><small><a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional/family-room' >Traditional Family Room</a> by <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/professionals/design-build/c/Johns-Island--SC' >Johns Island Design-Build Firms</a> <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/pro/solariskiawah/solaris-inc' >Solaris Inc.</a></small></div>

  • Lay them down. Start with a few books stacked horizontally among those that are shelved upright.
  • Add anything. On top of the mini book stack, place anything that tickles your fancy: a pillar candle, a photo frame, a miniature oil lamp. (The homeowners above used football decor!)
  • Change frequently. Bookshelves provide the perfect backdrop for ever-changing seasonal decor.

7. Create a guest bathroom vignette

A well-appointed vignette is a classy and considerate way to make your house guests feel at home.

<div><a href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/5484100/Santa-Monica-Beach-House-beach-style-bathroom-los-angeles'><img src='http://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/d121ad3f021fbbb0_8-2233/beach-style-bathroom.jpg' border=0 width='500' height='340' /></a></div><div style='color:#444;'><small><a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/beach-style/bathroom' >Beach Style Bathroom</a> by <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/professionals/architect/c/Los-Angeles--CA' >Los Angeles Architects & Building Designers</a> <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/pro/eevens/evens-architects' >Evens Architects</a></small></div>

  • Choose the appropriate flat surface. Like all vignettes, you'll start with a flat surface. Consider the vanity, a shelf or the back of the toilet as options.
  • Put yourself in their shoes. If you were a guest using a bathroom, what would you want or need?
  • Keep it together. Place your guest's supplies in one place so that she knows precisely what is there for her to use: a stacked towel set (washcloth, hand towel, bath towel), soap, shampoo and toothpaste. For a snazzier look, use decorative bottles and soap dishes for the display.

Practice makes perfect. Your first stab at a vignette will not be your last. Move items from one display to another until you achieve the look you desire. And have fun!

The Amazing Race: 6 Moments that left us wondering WTH!

Here are just my top six of the night:

1. How was that really a Roadblock?

I mean, sure you had to fly over one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and sure, you got a little wet, but come on — there was nothing challenging in this Roadblock. It didn't even take that much time, and they had to find the flag. Did you see how big that flag was?

2. Where was Team Alabama all night?

I think we may have gotten a snippet of them once. Usually, when a team disappears from the main viewing, it's the kiss of death and usually means they're going home soon.

Amazing race Confusion tweet 1

Amazing race Confusion tweet 1

3. Josh and Tanner use their express pass...

On nothing. Really. They opted to use their express pass, which means they didn't have to participate in the Roadblock and could move forward to the detour. The detour didn't start until the next morning, and they ended up drawing the same start time as the Green Team. Ultimately, they're back on even playing ground.

4. Possibility of a double U-Turn.

And no one used it. The Green Team got there first, and in a surprising twist, Justin was humble and decided not to use it against Team Texas. Josh and Tanner got there, saw that the Green Team didn't U-Turn them and went back on their well-laid-out plans to stop the Green Team, also opting not to use it. I'm not sure if I was more impressed by the Green Team or disappointed in Team Texas.

Amazing race Confusion tweet 2

Amazing race Confusion tweet 2

5. To be continued...

What was that? True fact: When I was a kid, it used to terrify me when the announcer would come on and say "to be continued." Why did this have to happen? I mean, it's a series... isn't it continued every week? Now we have to wait seven days to see which teams come in after first and second? Lame.

6. How are you paying for a cab?

Apparently the teams are giving all their money to the orphanage, but if you watch the Green Team and Team Texas (before the "to be continued"), they have to get in a cab to continue a new leg of the race. How are they paying for this cab if they just donated all their money?

I really need this show to start giving me some drama. It seems like we're not racing around the world as much as we're taking a Sunday drive in the country. Maybe next week?

Are you enjoying this season of The Amazing Race? Who do you think should win?

Why my mom's Halloween dirt pudding is a classic in my family

$

If you grew up during this time period, I am pretty sure you know exactly what I mean.

For me, this wasn’t the case. My mom handmade my costumes, as she was an expert sewing pro with her sewing machine and patterns.

One year, I was a witch, and she actually repurposed fabric from one of her own party dresses. Another year, she created a costume that turned me into Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie. She crafted a cheerleader costume one year, too.

Halloween 1980
Image: SheKnows

Each year, I wished I could just have a store bought plastic costume, but my mom was intent on making each year all the more special for me by putting the extra touches on these one-of-a-kind costumes. Now, I would take those unique creations over a store-bought costume any day.

Though the costumes were indeed unique and specially made for me, one thing always remained the same.

Each and every Halloween, my mom made dirt pudding for my kid brother and me. It was a staple in our home, as was trick-or-treating, which we would do around the neighborhood for hours. My mom had the patience of a saint, as she took us all over the neighborhood and made sure our treat bags were filled to the brim.

Even better, my mom made sure our refrigerator contained her signature Halloween dessert, with dirt pudding awaiting our arrival home.

As a mom, I try my best to channel my own mom’s spirit for this spooky and fun holiday.

Although I can’t sew for the life of me, I still can — and do — make dirt pudding for dessert for my own kids to eat upon our own return from trick-or-treating.

Halloween now
Image: SheKnows

That tradition has survived, and even after all these years, dirt pudding will always make me think of past Halloweens. As much as I wish I could freeze time, I know I can't. I hope someday my own girls will pass this tradition on to their children.

So, from my mom’s past Halloween kitchen to my present and now to yours, here is our traditional recipe.

Halloween dirt pudding recipe
