Telling a woman to 'eat a cheeseburger' isn't pro-curves, it's ignorant

$

0

Giuliana Rancic is being criticized, again, for being too skinny. The comments don't fall short of telling her she looks unhealthy, that she should really go eat a cheeseburger.

While more women are standing up for their bodies at every curve, wrinkle and roll — and that is a beautiful thing — it doesn't give anyone the right to attack a woman for not having enough rolls. It's as if right when it was cool to be proud of our weight (a trend I fully condone), it somehow became cool to poke fun at being too skinny (a trend that I don't).

Our society's new-found confidence in not looking like every magazine model does not suddenly make it OK to shame anyone who represents this group of women. And cheeseburgers will not solve any issues you think these women have.

I repeat, "... you think these women have."

Your body weight is your choice and every other woman has that same right. While we may have freedom of speech to express opinions about how ugly, fat or skinny someone is... why are we so quick to tear people down?

Yes, Giuliana is thin. But she also might love the way she looks. Her doctor may think she is perfectly healthy. And if she's not, well, throwing cheeseburgers in her face certainly is not the answer.

Brynn Andre, body image expert and certified life coach, who battled an eating disorder for 10 years before she started to coach other girls, can attest to how dangerous comments like this are.

"Every woman I coach can recall the smallest insult they ever received on their body, like a bullet that's lodged inside her heart. One mean-spirited remark could be the spark to cause an eating disorder; words about a woman's body can be that powerful."

So, tell a woman to eat a cheeseburger. Tell her that she is way too skinny. Tell her there is obviously something wrong with her. But you're probably doing one of two things: Fueling her eating disorder or giving her one.

When you suffer from an eating disorder, what you ate that day drives everything you do and what starts with a simple desire to look thinner (something that's really pretty common) becomes an addiction to food and everything it represents. It's an obsession with food that is only increased by our society's obsession to attack what a woman looks like, whether "fat" or "skinny."

As Andre says, "Struggling with emotional eating and body shame is an emotional drain. It robs you of the ability to be fully present in your life because you're continually worrying about how much or how little you've eaten, how fat or thin you look that day and whether you've worked out enough."

And before you ask, "If it's so miserable, why don't they just stop caring what people think?" Let's just remember a little thing called empathy. Telling an overweight person to "just exercise" doesn't magically make them do it and telling a woman with an eating disorder to stop caring will not suddenly make years of emotional shame go away.

If you've ever personally known anyone who suffered from an eating disorder, you know very well that all the positive comments in the world don't change their mind. You can say, "You're crazy, you look beautiful. Forget them." But all they hear, is "I'm not good enough."

Leora Fulvio, Psychotherapist specializing in women's issues, explains, "It doesn't matter what they look like, they feel not good enough because pretty much all women and their bodies are metaphorical piñatas. Anyone who puts themselves out there is up for criticism because we have created a society that tells us that it is OK."

And thus so many women learn to hate their bodies before you can blink twice.

"Having an abusive relationship with yourself is impossible. So you have to get out into the world," Fulvio continues, "Take it slowly, step-by-step. Do little things that challenge you... little steps to help you reintegrate into the world."

So, why are we set on creating a world in which no one is comfortable being themselves? The chatter is always about being too skinny or too fat, what is so-called normal, when all we really need to do is just take a deep breath and start supporting each other a little more. We're all each other have.

If you're worried about a friend, suggest Andre's free guide to food freedom. And you can get more advice from Leora here.

Amber Portwood is allegedly inviting some unexpected guests to her wedding

More: Teen Mom's Maci Bookout wants to "protect" her daughter from Farrah Abraham

But Portwood doesn't just want any old barn wedding. According to rumors, she plans on inviting a film crew and, thus, all her fans, because she wants the event televised and paid for by MTV.

"Amber really likes the idea of a TV wedding," a Teen Mom insider told In Touch. "It's going to be such a special moment in her life, and Amber really wants to share it with her fans."

"She hopes MTV will film her wedding so that they can help her foot the bill," the insider continued.

MTV has yet to confirm any of these plans or announce a Teen Mom OG wedding special, but Portwood allegedly wants to walk down the isle this fall.

A TV wedding is far from the only project Portwood has in the pipeline. She announced on Wednesday on Twitter that she'll be heading back to school in April.

No word yet what, specifically, she plans to study.

Portwood confirmed her engagement to Baier, a professional poker player, at the beginning of March, following a Teen Mom OG trailer that showed the two getting engaged.

"My life now with my new fiancé is amazing," she told E! News.

More: 7 Things we know about Teen Mom OG thanks to the trailer

But contrary to In Touch's report that Portwood can't wait to walk down the aisle, the reality star recently told People magazine that she's taking her time with the engagement. "We wanted to be engaged for at least a year before we really jump into anything. We want everything in place."

No matter which rumor is true, hopefully the engagement and Portwood's return to school signal a new start for her. She spent 17 months behind bars for a drug possession charge in 2011.

Catch a new episode of Teen Mom OG Monday at 10 p.m. on MTV.

Women do make more than men — at 9 jobs, anyway

$

The gender pay gap keeps marching on to the same tune — that is, women are, on average, paid 78 percent as much as men. A recently released report examines this gap more closely to reveal the scant number of professions where women eke out a salary greater than men, and the number of those jobs is depressingly low.

What are the jobs where women earn more than men? Producers/directors, vehicle cleaners, wholesale/retail buyers (except farm products), transportation security screeners, social and human service assistants, special education teachers, transportation/storage/distribution managers, dishwashers and counselors. And even in these jobs, the amount women earn over men is nearly negligible, in some cases only surpassing men's average salaries by $30.

By contrast, in the other 300-plus professions, the gap between men and women was quite a bit wider. Some of the most extreme examples showed a $40,000-plus gap between men and women, doing the same type of full-time, year-round job. These jobs included farmers, ranchers and other agricultural managers ($41,691 for men, compared to $25,310 for women), morticians, funeral directors and undertakers ($51,129 for men, compared to $31,023 for women) and financial analysts ($100,081 for men, compared to $63,424 for women).

According to Business Insider, there are several factors that may come into play when we examine the disparity in salaries between men and women. For one, women often desire and request more flexibility in their careers, which can be a detriment to their potential earnings. Also, it's been found that more men than women negotiate their salaries, and when women do negotiate, they often do so at a cost — namely negative attitudes and a more hostile work environment.

While the results of this study are certainly enlightening, they are also discouraging — how far have we come, and how far do we have yet to go?

Man confesses 'I drank so much soda, they thought I was having a seizure'

And they're blamed for good reason: One 12-ounce can of soda contains upwards of 200 calories and 35 grams of sugar. However, obesity isn't the only health problem that can result from excessive soda slurping, as writer Andy Campbell reveals in a terrifying essay for The Huffington Post.

Campbell says that as a 12-year-old he drank Mountain Dew... nothing else.

"When I say I drank a lot of Mountain Dew, I really mean it was the only thing I drank," he writes. "For several months of my childhood, I had unlimited access to the neon-green sugar bomb, and I took a swig whenever I was thirsty."

He blacked out one night before dinner and had to be rushed to the hospital. "... I couldn't remember the last time I'd had a drink of water. It had been months," he adds. "It turns out that I was suffering from extreme dehydration."

Man drank so much soda he passed out

Man drank so much soda he passed out

Campbell says soda marketing to children is the reason for his addiction to the Dew. His habit started after a street crew for Mountain Dew showed up at his summer camp and he was hooked after that. The obsession almost cost him his life. Basically, all of the water in his body was replaced with corn syrup.

"When I got to the hospital, it took three medical personnel to find my veins, because without much water, they were completely collapsed." he writes. "My treatment was a gigantic bag of hydrating fluids, and I was told I should never drink soda again."

His obsession seems a bit extreme, but it's really not that far out there for many of today's children. If they're not swigging soda, they'll throw back an energy drink. A recent study by Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at the University of Connecticut found that 35 percent of eighth-graders consumed at least one energy drink in the past year and 18 percent consumed more than one.

Let that go unsupervised and out come children riddled with a whole host of health problems, including obesity, Type II diabetes, anxiety, ADHD — and even death. And no, diet soda isn't any better.

Let's just agree to only give kids water from now on, OK?

I get it, society dictates that we should have smooth yet unrealistically plump backsides these days, so what's a girl to do except turn to some Photoshop for those perfectly rounded pictures? But rather than just spout how that's reality, I totally support the fact that Rose fixed her photos and then copped to the fact that they were touched up.

The Walking Dead: Why Morgan's arrival could be bad news

$

This new idea came to mind when I read an article from Business Insider that talked about how the next big bad might have been hinted at back in Season 3. There was also the fan on Imgur who put together how a storyline from the comics may have been influenced by the show.

More: The Walking Dead's bloodiest season has left me feeling numb

Warning: Spoilers ahead for those who don't want to know anything about the comics.

So the basic idea is that, when Morgan was talking all that crazy nonsense after Rick found the guy wandering around alone, he might not have been so crazy after all. OK, well, to be fair, Morgan may still have been crazy, but it might have been for a completely different reason than we all thought.

He talked about people walking around "wearing dead people's faces." Everyone assumed Morgan was talking about people hiding their true selves, but he might have meant a group of people that were first mentioned in the comics just a few months ago. It seems there are people out there who travel with walkers and wear the skin of dead people on their faces to hide themselves from the zombies. They are known as "the Whisperers" because they whisper to keep the walkers from discovering that they are in fact traveling with some tasty, delicious treats.

Taking this information and adding it to the fact that walkers have been found with "W" on their foreheads, it could mean that the Whisperers are on their way to Alexandria. Fans have also seen what look like signs that Morgan will find his way to the group soon.

More: The Walking Dead — Carol's unforgivable moments and why we let them slide

Before now, it was assumed that Morgan catching up to Rick and his group would be a good thing. The poor guy has presumably been on his own since his son died and Rick left him. Finding Rick's people would be good for Morgan and for Rick, right? After all, Morgan is definitely a survivor, and they need all the well-trained people they can get. But what if Morgan's arrival comes with some other unexpected guests?

Morgan, prisoner of the Whisperers

The last time we saw Morgan, he was tracking Rick and the rest of the survivors. If the Whisperers are in the same area, then it's very possible that they've already found Morgan. If they got him to tell them who he was tracking and why, those crazy dead-face-wearing people could be heading for Alexandria. Even if he didn't tell them anything, they might have followed Morgan long enough to discover who he was tracking and maybe even captured him to use against Rick.

More: 8 Reasons The Walking Dead's gender-swap is a huge deal

Morgan, walking with the Whisperers

Another theory I have is this: What if Morgan joined the Whisperers? He wasn't exactly in the best state of mind when Rick left him, and it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that he would join a group like the Whisperers. Sure, wearing dead skin sounds insane in theory, but it's actually brilliant zombie defense when you think about it. It's not much different than Rick and some others covering themselves in zombie guts to get past walkers or Michonne traveling with zombie "pets" to keep her humanness hidden. Morgan could have decided the Whisperers had a good option to survive, and he may not even be aware that they are bad people.

The Walking Dead Season 5 finale is only a couple days away. Do you think Morgan or the Whisperers might make an appearance?

More: The very mature reason Zayn Malik is leaving behind One Direction

Is Kevin Hart really a One Direction fan? We're guessing that's a big fat no. When a reporter filled Hart in on Malik's untimely departure, though, that didn't stop the supersilly comedian from losing his shit on the red carpet. Ever the overacting actor, Hart took his reaction all the way up to 11, and it might be the funniest thing ever.

"Hold up!" Hart bellowed from the red carpet. "Did you hear One Direction is breaking up?"

More: 15 Zayn Malik moments that made Directioners fall in love

His classically hilarious style of exaggerating the circumstances has never been more perfectly demonstrated than his reaction to Malik's ditching the band. Check out the short but brilliant clip.

Kevin Hart - One Direction

Kevin Hart - One Direction

Unlike Malik, Hart's career continues its upswing. The well-loved comedian (and pretend rapper) has done the late-night circuit promoting his new film, Get Hard. He and his co-star, Will Ferrell, have taken to bashing each other and telling outright lies about the other in each of their interviews. From silent treatments to sexual preferences and how often they like to be naked, no holds have been barred during Hart and Ferrell's press tours.

We hope Hart's love for boy bands might be at least somewhat real... even in a nostalgic sense. We'd love to see him team up with Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon to bust out some awesome boy band tunes. Maybe in the style of a barbershop quartet? C'mon! Please?

Earth Hour artwork promotes sustainable living

Of course, it's not just about turning your lights out for an hour then carrying on as normal.

Sudhanshu Sarronwala, chair of Earth Hour global said: “Climate change is not just the issue of the hour, it’s the issue of our generation. The lights may go out for one hour, but the actions of millions throughout the year will inspire the solutions required to change climate change.”

But it's a good start.

There's a ton of stuff happening tonight, with some of the world's most famous landmarks pledging their support to the cause by going dark for Earth Hour, including the UN building and Times Square in New York, the Houses of Parliament in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Scotland's Forth Road Bridge, Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and Rio de Janeiro's Rio Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer). Thirty UNESCO World Heritage sites will also go dark, including the Acropolis in Athens, Edinburgh Castle, and the Germany's Cologne Cathedral. In Las Vegas, casinos and hotels on the Strip will turn off their exterior lights and marquees, leaving one of the most famous streets in the world in complete darkness.

When you reach for that light switch remember….the future isn’t necessarily bright. ”

Pencils To The End by Do The Green Thing

“We didn’t have to look far to find inspiration for our everyday item; we’d been writing potential ideas with it. A pencil is such a brilliantly simple and useful thing. It’s something that has stayed the same for hundreds of years and isn’t likely to become redundant anytime soon. But we realised that we’d been misusing them. Like so many items now, they are cheap and easy to produce. And this has lead to the bad habit of discarding them far too quickly, only to take a newer, longer one from the pack.

We designed Pencils To The End to give each pencil its individual worth and act as a small reminder that, just like a story, a pencil should reach it’s conclusion before it’s finished.”

Hawaiian Beach Lights by Sophie Thomas

“Kamilo Beach Point is one of the most Southern points of North America, difficult to get to and very close to the Pacific garbage patch. It has always been known as a place where things turn up. After a storm, fishermen would always go there to find uprooted trees to construct their fishing boats from. And now it is known as ‘trash beach’ because of all the rubbish that floats up and lands there.

When I went to Kamilo Beach Point last year I found all these mad things on the beach, from tiny plastic nurdles to big detergent bottles, from toothbrushes to umbrella handles to shoes – things that would look commonplace in your house, but which look completely out of place on a beach. I started to pick up blue plastic bottle necks, all with rough edges where they had been mistaken for food and nibbled by fish and birds. They reminded me of the fairy lights on my tree, so I turned them into these Hawaiian Beach Lights, complete with low voltage bulbs. Back at home where they began, and more beautiful as lights than rubbish at your beach party.

The red lights are companion pieces I made from American detergent bottles. Because they were red, I knew they would be downcycled so I decided to put them to better use. Fitted with low voltage bulbs, they give off the most beautiful red glow, turning their downcycling disadvantage into a beautiful reuse asset.”

Chick-shaped cheese balls are an adorable Easter appetizer

chick-shaped cheese balls

The cute little chicks get their yellow hue from turmeric, which delivers a lot of color with a mild flavor, and are decorated with dried apricots, almonds, peppercorns and mini pretzels.

mini-cheese-ball-chicks

Start the cheese ball mix by grating your cheddar. This is really fast in a food processor with a grating attachment but can also be done with a hand grater. Either way, make sure to use the smallest holes.

mini-cheese-ball-chicks

Use clean and dry hands to mix the cheddar, softened cream cheese, turmeric, garlic and onion powders, salt and pepper.

mini-cheese-ball-chicks

Roll the cheese into 18 balls about 1-1/2 inches in diameter.

mini-cheese-ball-chicks

Use a pair of scissors to cut dried apricots into quarters.

mini-cheese-ball-chicks

Break the ends off a mini pretzel, and poke each end into the base of the cheese ball for feet, then press 2 apricot quarters into the middle of each side for wings.

mini-cheese-ball-chicks

Poke the round end of a small almond into the front and center for a beak, and press 2 peppercorns above it for eyes.

mini-cheese-ball-chicks

Place each cheese ball on a round cracker. I used whole-wheat Ritz.

These chicks are incredibly cute, and kids will love them, but make sure to warn them to not eat the peppercorns. Otherwise there will be tears. Yep, that's experience talking.

mini-cheese-ball-chicks

Keep the cheese balls refrigerated until an hour before serving. You can make them up to 24 hours in advance, then pull them out as you're setting up for guests.

Mini chick-shaped cheese balls recipe

These little baby chick-shaped cheese balls are a cheerful yellow and so adorable. Marcona almonds, which are smaller and rounder than other almonds, work best for their beaks, but you can use larger almonds if you can't find the marcona variety.

Yields 18

Total time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces yellow cheddar, finely grated
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 18 marcona almonds
  • 36 peppercorns
  • 9 dried apricots
  • 18 pretzel sticks
  • 18 round crackers

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, use freshly washed and dried hands to mix the cheddar, cream cheese, turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.
  2. Roll the cheese mixture into 18 balls about 1-1/2 inches in diameter.
  3. Poke an almond into the front and center of each cheese ball.
  4. Press 2 peppercorns above each almond for eyes.
  5. Use scissors to cut the apricots into quarters.
  6. Place an apricot quarter on each side of the mini cheese balls to make wings.
  7. Break the ends off each pretzel stick, and then stick 2 ends into the base of each cheese ball for feet.
  8. Place each cheese ball on a cracker to serve.

What you need to know about adoption and postpartum depression

$
0
0

"This happens sometimes, honey. Talk to your doctor about meds."

I was too embarrassed to tell the nurse my tears were because of the double whammy of episiotomy stitches and constipation. Bored, I read the literature. I learned postpartum depression (PPD) is a clinical diagnosis characterized by symptoms of depression after childbirth.

Counting myself lucky I didn't experience PPD, I went home. The stool softeners worked. My stitches healed. I encountered other women who suffered from PPD over the years. I was always grateful for the nurse who'd enlightened me. Awareness is a good thing.

Eighteen years later I was a new mom again. My husband and I adopted a little boy. I heard murmurs about post-adoption depression (PAD), stress over difficulty attaching to an adopted child. Guilt that accompanied the aftermath of "wow, we have a kid." Similar to postpartum depression… without the postpartum.

I admit I was smug, a sanctimommy. Surely anyone having trouble bonding with a wanted, chosen child was doing something wrong. Smugness bit me in the behind.

I expected to feel love for my new child, to be enthralled. Enthralled was far from how I felt. I wasn't even sure I liked him. I'd had a picture in my mind of how my family would look after adoption. Reality didn't match up.

I went through the motions but I felt myself spiraling into depression. I started isolating myself to hide the choking anxiety. Ashamed of my feelings, I withdrew.

Many women experience anxiety and guilt after adoption but keep silent because they're afraid others won't understand. The symptoms (anger, sadness, anxiety and inability to concentrate) are similar to PPD but the root causes are unique to adoption:

Lack of community support

Adoption might look like an easy path to parenthood: no stretch marks, hemorrhoids or other gross stuff. The flip side is that not all adoptive parents enjoy bona-fide "new parent" status. Family and friends said things like:

"You should have known what you were getting in to;" and

"You wanted this. Be happy he's got a family to take care of him now."

I saw myself as a new mom, but the rest of the world didn't. There was no colicky infant or breastfeeding struggles so people thought I should just be my usual self. I assured everyone that we were doing fine… because no one wanted to hear otherwise.

Unrealistic expectations

Adoptive parents fantasize about the moment they meet their baby for the first time. We expect adoption to be a happy time. The waiting is over. Our pre-adoption parenting classes focus on how to help our child feel safe and secure with us, not the parents' feelings for the child. I never thought I would be that parent who couldn't attach.

Residual emotions

Struggles with infertility or birth parent uncertainty may linger after a child is placed. Adoption has few absolutes. Adoptive parents experience anxiety over what could go wrong. Holding a new child for the first time doesn't erase those anxieties.

If someone in your life has recently adopted, look for signs of stress or withdrawal. Ask if she wants to talk or if she wants you to bring dinner. Better still, just bring it. I rowed alone and it was hard. If someone would have acknowledged I wasn't in a great place and helped me talk through it, I might have gotten back on track faster. Awareness really is a good thing.

Kendra and Hank have a bold new show, but will it reveal anything new?

$

0

And, since that time, we've seen the drama unfold on Season 3 of Kendra on Top and watched as the internet became a veritable Magic 8 Ball of the couple's marital status — "Are they still together?" "My sources say no." "Did Kendra kick Hank out?" "Signs point to yes."

Now, Kendra and Hank are back with an intriguing new series. WEtv will be re-running the last season of Kendra on Top with one big caveat: The couple will be watching the show right along with the audience.

The teaser promo promises "the inside story... uncensored, unfiltered, unbelievable."

As I tuned into the premiere of Watch With Us last night, I couldn't help feeling slightly skeptical. After all, I followed along last season, expecting that at some point Hank might actually offer some sort of solid explanation for the allegations against him or for his actions.

Sure, I assumed they'd string us along until the finale before any big reveal. Such is TV, no?

What I, along with other viewers, didn't expect was to tune in for the entire season of Kendra on Top and be left with little more than Hank's assurance of "Kendra, I really want to tell you what happened."

I supported Kendra's decision to do the show last season — I feel as though what she essentially did was take lemons and make lemonade. Her family is in the public eye, so there was no way they were escaping the scandal. Instead, she faced it head on by inviting viewers into her home and her heartache.

She gave us a rarely-seen perspective: what a celebrity cheating scandal looks like from the inside. I thought it was brave decision.

More: Kendra on Top: Are Hank's tears real, or is he manipulating her?

So when I heard about Watch With Us, I was intrigued. The format of the show is innovative, absolutely. As a consumer, though, I want to know what the value is to me. It sounds somewhat harsh and impersonal to say that regarding a show about someone's marriage in limbo, but let's be real: Reality TV is a business, and Kendra is a brand.

I don't think she would dispute this.

My motive, then, for tuning into Watch With Us is the implication that the value I seek — finally getting closure in the form of some sort of admission from Hank — will be fulfilled.

The premiere did answer a few questions. Like, for starters, why even do a show like this? "Our therapist suggested it." Or does Hank realize how his behavior affected Kendra, really? "This could be beneficial — every action has a consequence."

More: Kendra on Top: Hank admits he did something wrong — sort of

But after watching the hour-and-a-half-long premiere, the most dramatic moment proved to be one we'd already seen in the promo — Hank's confession that he had considered suicide during their split.

The majority of the show was simply playback from last season, peppered with tense moments of Hank and Kendra reflecting on their feelings during that time.

Will we finally learn what really happened between Hank and Ava London? I doubt it. Will we at least see Hank offer Kendra some sort of explanation? Will we learn anything new at all?

Thus far, I remain dubious.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Hank will finally fess up, or will we sit through another season with no resolution? Sound off in the comments below.

Slow Cooker Sunday: Easter ham that just couldn't be easier

This holiday, we're moving the ham to the slow cooker and freeing up all that oven space for whatever else is on the Easter menu. The slow cooker is really the perfect tool for the job, since most hams are already cooked, and it's really just a matter of warming them up. This recipe works great at high heat for 6 hours, but if you want or need to do it more slowly, feel free to set it to low for 8 to 10 hours too. No complicated glazes necessary either; just a reduction of the cooking juices to pour over the top and keep things moist when serving.

Slow cooker Easter ham recipe

An easy way to free up oven space for holiday cooking. This slow cooker ham is a must for one-oven households.

Serves 10-12

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 6 hours 10 minutes | Total time: 6 hours 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 (8-9 pound) spiral-cut ham
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

Directions:

  1. Place the ham cut side down into a large slow cooker.
  2. In a small saucepot over medium-high heat, combine the remaining ingredients, and whisk until simmering.
  3. Pour the liquid on top of the ham in the slow cooker, cover, and cook on high for 6 hours, basting with the liquid about every hour.
  4. Once cooked, transfer the ham to a serving platter, and pour the liquid into a large skillet with high sides. Bring to a high simmer, and reduce the liquid for 10 minutes.
  5. Once reduced, pour over the ham, slice, and serve.

5-Ingredient strawberry-coconut truffles are yummy vegan bites

$

These sweet treats use fresh strawberries that are pureed with the coconut butter and frozen into a truffle. You can definitely eat them plain, but I had to give mine a nice, hefty drizzle of dark chocolate to finish them off. These are great for kids too and have none of those nasty artificial ingredients most truffles contain.

If you have never had coconut butter, it's super rich and creamy, slightly sweet and has the perfect hint of coconut flavor. Now, the important thing is to not get it confused with coconut oil. You can most likely find coconut butter in any health food store, usually in the peanut butter or nut butter aisle.

5-Ingredient strawberry-coconut truffles with dark chocolate recipe

Inspired by My Whole Food Life

Creamy coconut butter, strawberries and maple syrup create a light base for these truffles that are finished off with melted dark chocolate. Tip: If keeping these truffles frozen until serving time, simply allow them to sit at room temperature for several minutes to soften.

Yields 12-15

Prep time: 25 minutes | Inactive time: 1 hour | Total time: 1 hour 25 minutes

Ingredients:

For the filling

  • 1 cup organic coconut butter (not coconut oil)
  • 1 cup fresh, organic, sliced strawberries
  • 2-3 tablespoons pure maple syrup (depending on desired sweetness)

For the chocolate drizzle

  • 1 cup dark chocolate, finely chopped
  • 3-4 tablespoons plain unsweetened cashew milk (or other dairy-free milk)

Directions:

  1. Line a small baking sheet with waxed paper, and set it aside.
  2. To the bowl of a food processor, add the coconut butter, strawberries and maple syrup.
  3. Blend on high until the filling is super smooth and creamy and a light pink color.
  4. Using a small cookie scoop, scoop out the filling, and drop it onto the waxed paper-lined baking sheet. Repeat until all the strawberry filling has been used.
  5. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for about 1 hour to allow the truffles to harden.
  6. Before the truffles are done in the freezer, melt the chopped chocolate and cashew milk in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring frequently until melted completely.
  7. Remove the truffles from the freezer, and drizzle the melted chocolate over each one. (If you notice the truffles starting to melt or become sticky while drizzling the chocolate, return them to the freezer for 10 minutes to harden again.)
  8. Enjoy immediately, or store in the freezer until ready to enjoy.

10 Signs your friend is no longer vegan

$
0
0

The health and environmental benefits of being vegan are well documented, numerous and constantly rehashed by all your vegan friends. However, like joining a gym, binge-watching previous seasons of The Bachelor or wearing leg warmers, sometimes your friends start doing something, expecting to do it for the rest of their lives, only to find that the reality of the situation doesn't always match up. Indeed, even the most ardent vegan might quietly slip back into the world of meat and cheese.

However, armed with the right knowledge, you won't be surprised when they reveal their big secret: They're no longer vegan.

1. The only thing they won't shut up about now is CrossFit

Crossfit

Image: Giphy

As the joke goes, a vegan and a CrossFitter walk into a bar. Three minutes later, everyone in the bar knows, because they won't shut up about it. So you can be pretty sure your vegan friend's a meat eater when the only thing they won't shut up about is CrossFit.

2. They can get within 10 feet of an aquarium

Fish tank

Image: Giphy

Once your vegan friends start eating fish again, aquariums no longer become pitiable death farms where brave aqua-life wait to meet their grisly end. Instead, they become holding tanks of deliciousness.

3. They start watching Guy Fieri

Guy Fieri (almost)

Image: Giphy

Guy Fieri is an admitted "pal of pork" who, when he still had his cooking show, could find more delicious things to do with pork than any 10 other chefs. Of course, this gross promotion of the consumption of the flesh of an animal shouldn't fly too well in the face of a vegan. Therefore, when your friend starts talking about how much she loves Fieri's show, something's up.

4. They suddenly stop asking what's in the main course, what's in the side dish, what's in (add dish here)

Nazis at a dinner table

Image: Giphy

Every time you take a vegan to dinner, they're going to hound the poor server with the name, rank and serial number of every ingredient in every component of every dish. Once your friend can pick an item off a non-vegan establishment's menu with nary a question asked, there's a good chance they're no longer vegan.

5. In fact, they stop asking about the animals at all

Homer Simpson and a lobster

Image: Giphy

As they gauge how much guilt to lay on their fellow eaters, many vegans want to know about the conditions in which the animals who contributed to the meal were treated in life, what their name was and if they seemed like generally upbeat pigs, chickens, ducks, etc. The minute that conversation passes by the wayside, it's time to question just how vegan your friend is anymore.

6. They fail to remind you an animal died as you try to enjoy your turkey sandwich

Was going to ask, but not now

Image: Giphy

Every vegan's favorite question: "Did you know an animal died to make that?" Every former vegan's favorite question? Silence.

7. There are suspicious food wrappers in the walk-in pantry

Trash angels

Image: Giphy

Once you start to think your friend is no longer vegan, you might take a minute to snoop around their house. If you find a McDonald's wrapper, an empty egg carton or a plastic meat tray, then you're probably on to something.

8. Somehow they fail to realize the dessert is made from milk chocolate

Love chocolate

Image: Giphy

The former vegan who's still keeping up appearances is likely to tip her hand around dessert time, especially when milk chocolate (which contains, you know, milk) is in the mix. Watch your masquerading vegan companion. If she goes in for a slice of cake without a second thought, be prepared for your vegan friend to recant any second.

9. They steal a slice of pizza, then act surprised it's not vegan cheese

Pizza

Image: Giphy

If chocolate wasn't the thing that pulled the vegan back to the world of meat or dairy, then it was probably cheese. So if they grab a slice, take a huge bite and then act surprised because it's real mozzarella, you've got a former vegan on your hand.

10. They finally admit they hate tofu

Gross!

Image: Giphy

Loving tofu is something that really only those who can't eat meat do. Everyone else realizes what it is. So when your vegan friend admits that tofu sucks, it's time to take them out for a nice chicken dinner.

'Rich-girl hair' trend is taking over and here's why you care

This "new" style "first" made an appearance at New York Fashion Week, and has since popped up all over the European runways. According to The Cut, Guido Palau, Redken's creative consultant, called the gleaming look at Versace "very glamorous, but in a nonchalant" way. I'd like to call it the "I barely put any effort into this, but I still look fabulous" style.

Image: Wenn

Paul Hanlon, lead stylist for John Frieda at Prabal Gurung's New York Fashion Week show, told The Cut that the look was meant to complement his "luxurious sportswear" line. Gurung wanted the girls looking, "as beautiful as possible, in the most natural way."

Stylists creating the look at these various Fashion Weeks want to make it clear that the look is very different from beach hair. Where beach hair is more choppy, texturized and wavy, "rich-girl hair" is smooth and straight, with just a slight curve halfway down. But make sure you keep these two separate in your mind, otherwise you might get slapped with a curling iron.

Image: Giphy

How to get the look

The lovely and talented Vernelle Murphy, owner and head stylist at Salon V, one the highest-rated salons in New York City, has some tips on how to easily achieve "rich-girl hair" sans stylist. She has also worked New York Fashion Week herself, and is thus at the forefront of hair trends.

First, she stipulates that it's an especially great 'do for girls who have straight hair normally, and just want a way to get a little movement without a lot of time and effort.

"In today's modern world, busy women everywhere are looking for effortless beauty. I think this look is chic and natural without looking ‘done.'"

DIY "rich-girl hair" without having to fuss with a curling iron.

  1. Apply a smoothing cream from roots to ends on damp hair.
  2. Part your hair neatly down the center or deep side part. Let your hair dry naturally.
  3. When your hair is 98 percent dry, twist your hair into two loose buns on the side of your head and let air dry the rest of the way.
  4. Take hair down and enjoy loose waves without too much volume.
Bonus: Tucking your hair behind your ears for 10 minutes will give you a soft bend around the face.
Now the next time you want that effortlessly cool, rich-girl look, give this a try and see how many yachts you'll attract by the end of the day.

Meghan Trainor's response to sexist 'Dear Future Husband' song is disappointing

After being totally disappointed in Meghan Trainor for her "Dear Future Husband" song, we thought maybe she would have some existential reason we didn't get for producing a song with genre roles straight outta 1950, and we patiently awaited her thoughtful response when asked the question about her sexist single.

More: Even slightly feminist chicks will hate sexist "Dear Future Husband"

Well, the question was asked at the iHeartRadio Awards, and she completely let us down — again.

Her response is totally lame.

Meghan Trainor's comments on Dear Future Husband

Meghan Trainor's comments on Dear Future Husband

She said, "Everyone's going to say something. I don't think it's sexist. I just wrote a song for my particular future husband out there, wherever he is. I'm just preparing him. Letting him know what's up."

Insert huge eye roll.

More: Demi Lovato puts Meghan Trainor on blast for eating disorder comments

She could have literally said anything else, and we wouldn't have been as disappointed, but she completely dodged the question and the real problem. She might just be showing her age and the fact that she might still be a little wet behind the ears, but at least her "people" could have better prepared her for the questions they knew she was going to get about it.

And then to try to follow it up by saying she is so empowering with her new partnership is just silly.

We've said it before, and we are saying it again: Meghan Trainor might have some songs we love, but she's still got a lot of growing up to do.
