These gluten-free red velvet brownies with boozy coconut-cream cheese frosting are amazing

What more could your sweetie love than these decadent, red velvet brownies? How about decadent, red velvet brownies with a fabulous vodka-tinged, creamy frosting?

You'll love these decadent, gluten-free red velvet brownies with boozy coconut-cream cheese frosting

One bite of these goodies, and you'll be in love… with this dessert. I used coconut-flavored vodka for the frosting, with some coconut flakes sprinkled over the top for added texture. Use your favorite flavored vodka instead of the coconut, if you'd like. There are so many that would go well with chocolate.

Note: Gluten can be found in many different foods and products, from ketchup to soy sauce to candy and seasonings. While SheKnows tries to ensure that these recipes are gluten-free, carefully read the ingredient labels of all food and food products you use for these recipes to ensure they are also gluten-free.

Gluten-free red velvet brownies with boozy coconut-cream cheese frosting recipe

Rich and decadent, these brownies will prove your love to your sweetie. If you don't want to add the alcohol to the frosting recipe, replace it with 1 tablespoon of milk and 1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract.

Yields 9

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 20-25 minutes | Rest time: 30 minutes | Total time: 1 hour 5 minutes

Ingredients:

For the frosting

  • 1-1/2 to 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 6 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons coconut-flavored vodka
  • Dried coconut flakes, for garnish

For the brownies

  • 3/4 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1-1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons red food color gel
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Directions:

For the frosting

  1. To a medium bowl, add the powdered sugar and cream cheese. Blend with a mixer until smooth. Add the butter and vodka, and blend until combined.
  2. If you want the frosting to be thicker, then add more powdered sugar. If you need it a bit thinner, then add a bit of milk 1 teaspoon at a time.
  3. Mix until you reach your desired consistency.

For the brownies

  1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F. Line an 8 x 8-inch metal baking pan with aluminum foil so it hangs over the edges slightly. Spray it lightly with the nonstick cooking spray.
  2. In a small bowl, blend the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. Add the sugar to a separate, large bowl. Add the butter and eggs, and blend with a mixer to combine. Add the food color, and blend until combined.
  4. Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture a little at a time. Blend until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter into the lined pan, and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center of the brownies comes out clean.
  6. Allow the brownies to cool, then remove them from the pan by lifting them out with the aluminum foil. Cool completely on a wire rack, then carefully peel off the foil.
  7. Place the brownies on a cutting board, and cut into 9 even squares.
  8. Add the frosting to the cooled brownies, and sprinkle the coconut flakes over the top.

The Slap: Why the show's depiction of family life is terrifying

0
0

By now, you're no doubt aware of the central premise of The Slap: A man slaps a child who is not his at a family barbecue. However, the plot of this show, which was adapted from an Australian television series, which was itself adapted from a novel by Christos Tsiolkas, is far deeper and more grandiose than just the ramifications of corporal punishment.

Rather, The Slap is an exploration of individuals, family, fulfillment, parenting, general debauchery and restlessness, as told by giving viewers insight into the lives of each of the characters. I'm still on the fence about how well this adaptation achieves this exploration, but something it has done well after only its first episode is reinforce the feelings I had when I first read the book and watched the Australian adaptation: The kind of life most of the characters lead — getting married, having children, etc. — scares the living daylights out of me, and not for the reasons you might think.

More: Confession — I loved Glee, but it should have ended three seasons ago

I first read The Slap, the novel, while I was in graduate school studying to become an editor, and the novel taught me a lesson of great value: Editing works of fiction is not for me because all I'll ever want to do is amend the values and morals of the characters so that they fit my own. This guy is cheating on his wife? Nah, let's amend that. All of the characters drop C-bombs like they're going out of fashion? That seems unnecessary, so I reckon we'll do away with that, too. A grown man is married and has children, but he's doing drugs? Drugs are stupid, so let's delete the parts where he does them; maybe he can have a sugar addiction instead.

NBC's adaptation of The Slap, while a little watered down in terms of some of the behaviors of the characters in the book, has certainly bolstered my fears about family life and the lack of certainty that accompanies it, even though getting married and having children, on the surface, seems like a very stable thing to do.

The Slap's characters are all inherently unlikable. Seriously, I wanted to <del>punch</del> slap all of them because they all seem to belong in a moral wasteland. They all appear to lack courtesy, common decency and a general ability to take a moment to consider someone other than themselves. They are not only self-absorbed, but they are downright narcissists. Even the kid who cops the slap presents internal conflict because he was being a right-royal miscreant. Did he deserve to be slapped? No, I'm of the belief that no child ever does, but he was in some serious need of discipline and non-physical punishment. His own parents, however, didn't seem to think so.

More: 13 Things to know about Tina Fey's new Netflix show

While the above-mentioned abundant character flaws no doubt pre-date each character's decision to get married and have children, The Slap doesn't present a rosy picture of what happens when these kinds of people choose to wed themselves to someone else and procreate with them. The part that scares me? People are actually very good at hiding the parts of themselves that they don't want others to see — the parts of themselves that are narcissistic, the parts of themselves that are completely unsatisfied and unhappy, the parts of themselves that are looking for something or someone else that can't be provided by you and isn't you.

When people get married, they certainly don't do so thinking that it's all going to end in tears in a couple of years, that they'll eventually realize the person they married is an asshole and that their husband or wife will cheat on them and do any number of things they wouldn't condone or approve of. No, everyone thinks it's until death do you part, that you'll never fall out of love with that person, and they will always be able to fill every part of you.

When people decide to have kids, they certainly don't do so under the assumption that the kids will be ratbags who are difficult to control and who serve as a contraceptive incentive all by themselves. No, everyone thinks their child will be perfect and that the relationship they have with their child will be similarly perfect.

More: Better Call Saul and 151 other 2015 premiere dates

With just one episode, The Slap has, once again, made me paranoid about what my marriage will look like, should I ever marry, and what my kids might be like, should I ever choose to have them. An argument of nature vs. nurture can be applied to both marriage and children, but The Slap has certainly rammed home some of the unavoidable realities of both.

My marriage may appear as though it's wonderful to me, but how can I ever be certain that my husband is as fulfilled as I am, that the things we value really are the same and that he's not seeking validation from elsewhere (i.e. by having an affair, by doing drugs or through any other number of things I wouldn't be cool with)? And while bad parenting is definitely a component of The Slap, it still makes me wonder how I can ever be assured that my child will be a positive contributor to society — as opposed to a little demon — even if I do everything right as a parent.

The answer to both of these concerns is that you can never really be certain of anything, and the only thing you can control is your own behavior. If nothing else, The Slap certainly illuminated and then rammed home that message for me, making getting married and having a family something I am far more wary of than I was before. And while it hasn't deterred me, it's certainly given me cause to reevaluate what both of those things might look like in reality, as opposed to the fairy tale I've always imagined they will be.

Nick Hornby’s comments about female characters and archetypes are refreshing

0
0

Nick said, "Of course it's true. I think it's very hard for them not to."

Nick's newly released novel, Funny Girl, delves into the world of British television circa the 1960s, and follows Sophie Straw as she goes from country bumpkin to TV goddess. Sophie dreams of becoming the European version of Lucille Ball. She's funny, beautiful and brilliant, but life as a celebrity isn't as easy as she expected as she deals with rabid fans who can't seem to understand that her character's life is not her own.

As the author of several bestsellers turned to film (High Fidelity, About a Boy, Oscar-nominated screenplay An Education and 2014 adapted screenplay Wild), Nick is no stranger to being a celebrity and working with celebrities. His two favorites? Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon — but he hopes to someday work with Emma Stone.

More: VIDEO: Reese goes on a spiritual sojourn in new movie Wild

Funny Girl by Nick Hornby

Nick has met his share of famous folk, including his literary icon Anne Tyler, who he said was "magical" to meet. This isn't always so, as proven in Funny Girl when Sophie meets her favorite celeb, Lucy herself.

Nick said, "I think we don't actually have a fantasy about meeting somebody; we have a fantasy that that person will become our friend. All it will take is a handshake, and you'll end up going on holiday together."

Nick understands that seeking fame and fortune requires a deep drive. In Sophie's case, she hopes to impress her mother. Who's Nick trying to impress? "There's some 'f*** you' in there. Whoever it is, they must have really pissed me off, because I keep going. It might be something to do with school. I think I'm trying to impress a teacher who wasn't very impressed with me at the age of 11. He's probably been dead for 20 years, and I'm still waiting to hear from him."

More: PHOTOS: About a Boy parties with Lil Jon

That said, Nick admitted, "If I ever got all the validation, all the steam might go out of me."

Funny Girl is written primarily from the perspective of Sophie, but this isn't the first time Nick has taken on a woman's point of view. Is that a challenge? He said it isn't about gender; it's about motivation. "If I'd written American Sniper, I would have found that to be very, very hard. I don't understand those guys, and being a guy doesn't help you understand. I’m not sure that gender is the most significant part of it."

That said, he certainly does have a pet peeve about fictional female characters. It ticks him off "when the woman isn't a woman at all but a function of the plot. Basically the woman has no character. She's constantly appalled by the guy, but she's still talking about guys all the time. There's just nothing there."

More: 6 Books that address women's rights issues

Despite my coaxing, he declined to say which book or film he referred to specifically.

Funny Girl is a book that spans a lifetime, from Sophie's first arrival on the celebrity scene to eventual old age and the realization that her career is over. The ending is somewhat melancholy, but Nick made it clear: career is only a small part of a person's life.

He said, "We've got two sides to our life, really: our work and our private life. It's very hard to be happy with one and without the other. This book is about both sides of Sophie's life. In the end, being happy with who we’re with probably makes us the happiest."

7 Steps to prep, stage and photograph your home to get it sold fast

0
0

1. Ditch the beige

Every homeowner has had that debate over what color they should or shouldn't paint a wall. You might like blue, but buyers like beige — that's what we're told, but that's a lie. Using alternative colors, like soft blues and grays, will help your home to stand out from the crowd.

2. Break away from the cookie-cutter mold

Comparing your home to other properties is an essential step, but doing things exactly as they've done is a mistake. Use comparable properties as a reference point to determine which investments in your property will have the largest impact. Every other home in my neighborhood had carpet or tile, so I went with dark laminate to set my home apart.

3. Clear out the crap

Just because you own something doesn't mean it needs to appear in your listing photos. Potential buyers don't need to see your favorite fuzzy blanket, that hideous sofa you never got around to recovering or the caddy where you store your soap. Removing these things from your shots will let buyers see more of your space (which is what you want). So push them back, put them down, or tuck them out of the way. It takes only a few minutes and makes a world of difference in your photos.

4. Give a purpose to every room (even those you don't use)

In my listing photos, this was a bedroom. In real life, it was a room of junk that happened to have a bed. And while it was tempting to just shoot the room in all of its borderline-hoarder-trap glory, it was just as easy to move things out and stage a scene that looked both functional and orderly.

4. Shift, repurpose and reuse

If you think I own two Donna Karan metalic gold pillows, Besta Burs tables and matching fuzzy side chairs, well, you're wrong. To make your home look full, lovely and functional, just move things around from room to room and fill in the gaps as you shoot.

5. Swap your towels out for white

I love this tip, because fresh towels make bathrooms look instantly cleaner, and it's the easiest thing to do. Personally, I like to keep a set of pretty white towels ready for display at all times.

6. Show your space, not your stuff

Nothing is more annoying than a property listing that shows 20 photos of a renovated kitchen or nicely decorated living room but none of the rest of the house. Plus, refusing to share photos of your home might actually scare away potential buyers by making them wonder what you're hiding. Think about the listings you like to browse through. How many and what kind of photos do they have?

7. Include a floor plan if you can

It can be difficult to get the idea of a home's layout from a few photos, so if at all possible, include a floor plan. If you live in a community that was constructed by a developer, contact the builder, or visit their website to see if they've listed a copy of your home's floor plan in their promotional materials. If your home is older, you can use free rendering software like Google SketchUp to enter your home's measurements. There are several YouTube tutorials to show you how.

Amazing teacher buys a home for her homeless student's family

0
0

She became his family's entire support system.

Initially Butters-Lander wanted to deliver presents and food for Christmas. She took care of it on her own. "When I delivered the gifts to them, I was stunned on just how hopeless the situation was," she says. "I could not even cry." The single mother and her children, ages 5, 6 and 8, were living in a leaking, broken-down RV in the middle of the desert in Mojave, California. They had no hot water. They had no income outside of food stamps. They urgently needed to move the RV to a safer property but had nowhere to go.

Despite all this, the mother didn't ask for help — she told Butters-Lander she wished her children would appreciate what they had. The simple statement stuck with her and ultimately prompted her into action.

Butters-Lander was once a single mother without a job, car or home. Her daughters are now 21 and 10. "The difference between her and I was an amazing, wonderful, supportive family who helped me out," she says. She decided to become that support system for her student's mother. "Once she was pulled out of that black hole of a situation, she could then do her part. But she was stuck, and she needed to be thrown a rope. Not a token bag of clothes or a few gifts. They needed a true chance."

"Help my homeless student," Butters-Lander asked on her GoFundMe page for the boy and his siblings. In her years as a teacher, she'd never asked for help for a student. But she knew she had to do something.

"I woke up in the morning and found that $90 had been donated," she says. "As the day progressed, I could not get away from the computer. The donations, the shares and the messages just started pouring in. I was amazed!" The GoFundMe page raised just under $4,000 — all of which will be used to pay rent for the family's RV so that it can remain somewhere safe, secure and near town. Total strangers who were touched by the story of the Mojave family also sent clothes, bedding and gift cards for the children.

donations

Image: Lisa Butters-Lander

Butters-Lander was able to help them get the RV moved to a new, safe place. But her hopes were dashed when she went to clean the RV and deliver clothes, school supplies and fresh linens donated by supporters. The RV simply was not livable. It smelled awful and leaked so badly there were puddles on the floor, and none of the appliances worked.

Without using any of the GoFundMe money — which remains earmarked for rent — Butters-Lander and her sister purchased a new RV for the family. "It was inexpensive, and we were in the right place at the right time," she says.

It bears repeating. She used her own money to buy this family a home.

With the help of local friends and family, Butters-Lander cleaned up the replacement RV, installed a shed on the property and loaded up the new home with air beds, dishes and other supplies. The family, who had no idea any of this was happening, returned home to new belongings, hot and cold water, electricity and working appliances. The kids now have new school uniforms, an easy walk to school and access to support resources. Thanks to donations — many of which came from total strangers — the family's rent is also paid for almost the entire year.

new home

"We gave them a chance and hope," she says. "I see it in all their faces. It is a beautiful thing to see. I do not know how it will all work out, but I know that a lot of people joined together to give them a chance, and I was privileged to be a part of that."

Butters-Lander is still accepting donations that will go toward keeping the family secure in an RV park where the kids can access school and their mother can find work. Every teacher is a hero, but she went above and beyond to truly change a child's life and give another mother the chance to escape homelessness and poverty.

Slow cooker veggie-full minestrone is a ridiculously easy meal

0
0

My favorite time to make a good bowl of minestrone is after coming from the fresh produce market, where I buy loads of fresh vegetables and beans. In the markets, it is very common to buy prechopped vegetables and beans for making soup.

This barley and vegetable minestrone guarantees you a highly nutritious soup because the ingredients are all healthy. You can get a variety of nutrients from the different vegetables in it, plus carbohydrates from the grains or pasta, calcium from the Parmigiano Reggiano (or Parmesan) and monounsaturated fat from the extra-virgin olive oil.

Slow cooker barley and vegetable minestrone

Slow cooker barley and vegetable minestrone soup recipe

The good thing about minestrone is that you can put any vegetable you want in it and as much variety as you want. In addition to the vegetables, pasta, rice or other grains can go in too. As long as the minestrone is cooked for a long time on low heat, you will have a good, warm, Italian soup. This is where the slow cooker comes in.

Serves 6

Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 8 hours | Total time: 8 hours 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup pearl barley, rinsed
  • 5 cups varied vegetables, coarsely chopped in similar sizes (carrots, celery, zucchini, broccoli, French beans, potatoes, cauliflower, fresh beans, etc.)
  • 6 cups vegetable broth
  • Pepper
  • Fresh herbs (basil, parsley, mint, thyme, etc.)
  • Salt (if needed)
  • Grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Parmesan cheese, to taste
  • Extra-virgin olive oil

Directions:

  1. In the slow cooker, combine the pearl barley, vegetables, vegetable broth and pepper, and then set it on low for 8 hours.
  2. A few minutes before serving, add the fresh herbs and salt, if needed.
  3. Ladle the soup into individual soup bowls, and drizzle in the extra-virgin olive oil.
  4. Sprinkle with the grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Parmesan cheese, if using.

Mom's furious Facebook post about measles-exposed baby targets anti-vaxxers

0
0

After Jennifer Hibben-White took 15-day-old Griffin to the hospital for a checkup in January, she received an unthinkable call. A public health official informed Hibben-White that her newborn had been exposed to measles, a life-threatening disease, in the Pilkington, Ontario, hospital waiting room.

There are two important facts to remember about this story: A newborn baby like Griffin has an undeveloped immune system. A newborn baby like Griffin also has not been vaccinated yet.

For Hibben-White, this danger hit especially close to home. She had already lost her 5-year-old daughter Olivia when she died in her sleep from an undetected blood infection just three years ago. After Griffin's potential exposure to a vaccine-preventable illness, Hibben-White was irate.

She took to Facebook with a harsh stance against the anti-vaxxers who carelessly refused to protect their children and the children they encounter. She posted, "If you have chosen to not vaccinate yourself or your child, I blame you. I blame you."

"You have stood on the shoulders of our collective protection for too long. From that high height, we have given you the privilege of our protection, for free. And in return, you gave me this week. A week from hell. Wherein I don't know if my baby will develop something that has death as a potential outcome."

The full post can be seen below:

Anti-vaxx post

Anti-vaxx post

Within just a few days, Hibben-White's post has been shared more than 278,000 times. As Hibben-White told The Star, her rant wasn't intended to blast parents who made a different choice than her. It was intended to open their eyes to the reality, and especially the danger, of their decision.

She said, "My hope behind my post, was that it might change one person's mind (to vaccinate their child). If just one person did that, I would be happy."

This angry mom got her wish. Hibben-White was surprised to find hundreds of messages in her inbox from anti-vaccination parents, saying that her post had changed their mind. One honest rant on Facebook on behalf of a potentially ill newborn turned the tides and convinced parents to vaccinate.

Thankfully, my kids made it through the newborn stage, but I remember that being the scariest time of my life. Hibben-White's post made such a big impact because it highlights what many anti-vaxxers forget as they exercise their freedom of choice: Vulnerable kids who can't be vaccinated, like Griffin, other infants and children undergoing chemotherapy, could pay the price.

Hibben-White will find out if Griffin has measles after a 21-day incubation period. Griffin's doctor says that the odds are in his favor.

15 Pizza crusts that will totally blow your mind

0
0

Given the popularity of a whole new wave of different pizza crusts and ways to make them that have flooded American pizza places, it's pretty obvious that the American consumer was yearning for more in a crust than pan or thin. Today, it's possible to find many different types of crust using different grains, gluten-free flours and even veggies. Of course, it's also possible to find some pizza crusts that might just leave you thinking "huh?"

1. Crown Crust Carnival

Crown Crust Carnival

Crown Crust Carnival

The first of many of Pizza Hut's offenders on this list, Pizza Huts in the Middle East decided that plain bread wasn't good enough for their customers. Instead, there, diners are treated to crusts that envelope chicken fingers, hamburgers and other snack foods. It does solve the whole pizza vs. hamburger debate…

2. Super Pan: Cheese and garlic Napoli sauce

Super Pan

Check out the amazing graphic featuring not one but two odd sauces that seem to squirt right out at you in this soggy, cheesy, bizarre crust.

3. Double Sensation pie

Pizza Hit Double Sensation

Pizza Hut Malaysia (told you they'd be back) has offered a two-ring pie with a cheese-stuffed outer layer and a meat-stuffed inner layer. Add such amazing toppings as ham, zucchini and Alfredo sauce, and you have a recipe for heartburn no matter what part of the world you're in.

4. Little Caesars' Soft Pretzel Crust Pizza

Soft Pretzel Crust

Not to be outdone by its fellow chain, Little Caesars offers a soft pretzel crust, which isn't so weird, until you realize it also comes with that weird yellow not-cheese they serve at ballparks. Yum? We don't think so.

5. Mizza

pizza hut mizza

pizza hut mizza

The only gluten-free pizza to make the list, the mizza is a crispy rice cracker that gets topped with pizza fixings for an experience that seems more likely to chip a tooth than please the tongue.

6. German sausage pizza crust

Japanese Hot Dog pizza

Pizza Huts in Germany have blended into the local flavor by enveloping sausages in their crust. OK, maybe it's not that bizarre in concept, but it's still one weird-looking pie.

7. Cranberry sauce pizza crust

Pizza Hut's international reach is outdone only by its attempt to please local palates with some weird pizzas. Apparently in South Korea, you can find out what it's like to have cranberry sauce in your crust. Strangely enough, we don't think we ever asked that question, but there it is nonetheless.

8. Cone pizza

Pizza cone from KonoPizza

Image: Konopizza

It's an ice cream cone! No, it's a pizza! One new craze in pizza crusts is the cone pizza, which is just a cone-shaped crust stuffed with sauce and cheese.

9. Dessert crust pizza

Back in Korea, Pizza Hut keeps things rolling with a surf and turf pizza and a crust made from turnovers stuffed with cream cheese and other sweet ingredients like cinnamon and fruit.

10. Vegemite crust

Vegemite pizza

Vegemite pizza

Yes, Pizza Hut again. If the song "Land Down Under" taught us anything, it's that Australians will eat vegemite when no one else will. That's why Pizza Hut decided to stuff the stinky, bitter concoction into its crusts.

11. Shrimp and mayo roll crust

Shrimp and mayo pizza

The international pizza community seems to like their pizza crusts to be finger foods. It's no surprise, then, that shrimp and mayo (a popular Asian pairing) get stuffed into this pizza crust that gets served as an appetizer before the pizza. Or something.

12. Fish roe pizza

Fish roe pizza

Because if you can stuff a pizza pie with fruit, then you can stuff it with fish eggs. Bleck. Next.

13. Cheesy opera pizza

Celebration menu

Celebration menu

Why not stuff a pizza crust with another pizza, right? That was the inspiration for the two-in-one cheesy opera pizza. Just one more way Pizza Hut has made us rethink pizza and our lives.

14. Pizza-sized burger

Pizza Burger

Pizza Burger

Not really a pizza, but certainly a dish that draws inspiration from a pie. Plus, in a pinch, a toasted hamburger bun can make a crust of sorts.

15. Fried chicken

Domino's

Image: Domino's

We saved the best for last. Domino's has somehow managed to master the art of fried chicken bites. Wanting to make sure we stuff as many of these things into our mouths as possible, they now offer chicken bite "pizzas," which are delicious in any language and at least a thousand times better than crust stuffed with roe.

It's "mommy porn" at its finest. E. L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey — an international best-seller with 10 million copies in more than 30 countries — has turned up the heat with these truly memorable characters.

The girls of Grey

Anastasia: The Russian meaning of Anastasia is reborn, while the Greek meaning is resurrection. Famous bearer is St. Anastasia, a fourth century martyr and daughter of Tsar Nicholas II.

Carla: A feminine version of Charles, which means manly, the name's origins can be traced back to Spain, Germany and England.

Grace: The name, which has been enormously popular in the U.S. over the past decade, is a Latin name that means God's favor. For a more unique option, try the Irish variant of Grace — Grianne.

Elena: The lovely Italian moniker means shining light or bright one. Elena is a relative of the name Helen.

Katherine: Latin and Greek origins define Katherine as pure. Alternate spellings of this classic baby girl name include Kathryn and Catherine.

Leila: A name of Persian origin, this name meaning born at night was once a boy's name.

Lily: The ultra-feminine name pays tribute to the pure, white flower of Easter. It can also be spelled Lilly.

Mia: In Israel, Mia is a feminine variant of Michal. The Latin and Italian meaning, on the other hand, is wished-for child. Some consider it a derivative of Mary or Maria, which means bitter.

The boys of Grey

Christian: This Greek name means follower of Christ.

Carrick: Carrick is a rugged Gaelic/Irish name that means rocky headland. Expect to see this unique moniker quickly climb the popularity charts.

Elliot: This name is the Greek form of the Hebrew Elijah, which means Jehovah is God.

Jack: The Hebrew meaning of Jack is supplanter. During the Middle Ages, Jack was such a common English name that it became synonymous with man and boy.

José: A Spanish/Portuguese name, José means may God give increase.

Ray: The meanings of Ray vary by origin: grace (Scottish), radiant (Latin), regal (French), counsel (English) and mighty protection (German).

Taylor: This gender-neutral name means tailor. It was first used as a surname, then as a boy's name, then as a girl's name and now as a unisex name.

I can't tell you how much I love Red Velvet Cake, but when I found this popcorn recipe I knew it was perfect for Valentine's Day. To keep this quick easy, you can use the boxed cake mix for baking and making the crumbs. Tiramisu is the queen of Italian desserts and is a perfect way to indulge on Valentine' Day. Teen gets world's first penis reduction

0
0

The 17-year-old Florida boy opted for the surgery because he was very uncomfortable and it made it difficult for him to do the things he wanted to do. According to Uproxx:

When flaccid, it measured almost seven inches in length and had a circumference of 10 inches — around the size of a grapefruit. Surgeons described it as being shaped like an American football.

The teenager had suffered from several bouts of priapism — an unwanted erection, due to having a condition in which abnormally-shaped blood cells block vessels in the penis, causing it to swell. These episodes had left his penis bloated and misshapen.

He said he was unable to have sex or play competitive sports, had difficulty wearing his pants due to his 'large and heavy phallus,' and was embarrassed by how visible it appeared underneath regular clothing.

Poor kid. The fact is, people will likely laugh at this and talk about how having a giant penis is a problem they wish they had. But this boy was in pain. This isn't a punch line. This is a real life.

No person in their right mind would go through such a painful procedure for fun. My heart goes out to him and to his family as well. Hopefully he has a happy future.

This is a really important lesson that it's not just women who have unrealistic standards to live up to and a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation when it comes to looks and health. As a woman who was always very busty, especially in my teen years, I got very sick of hearing that it was a "nice problem to have." It really wasn't. I didn't get a reduction, though I considered it and once I started seriously running, they got smaller on their own. That was great. But I wouldn't blame a girl for doing it. And I don't blame this boy for doing what he did.

It's brave. No one should mock him for taking care of his health. There is no shame in knowing what you need to do and doing it.

20 Hilarious Valentine's Day baking fails that will have you giggling

0
0

It does suck going through all the work to create a masterpiece only to have it (sometimes literally) fall flat. We've all been there! But take solace in knowing you are not alone — just take a look at the Valentine's Day cooking fails below.

1. Flowers gone wrong

poo rose cake

Image: Cake Wrecks

Flowers are easy, they said. She'll like flowers on anything, they said. But I have a feeling this baker took "chocolate roses" to mean something else entirely...

2. Bacon, my heart

bacon heart pinterestfail

Image: Kacy Blog

There's no feeling that can compare to being betrayed by your one true love. Yes, I'm talking about you, bacon.

3. The sweet taste of failure

cinnamon roll heart fail

Image: Wendy Nielsen

TBH, these are technically a fail, but the end result still looks totally delicious to me.

4. Jello surprise

heart shaped jello fail

Image: Pinterest Fail

Talk about broken hearts. Judging by the brutal massacre of all those gelatin hearts, I'm guessing this chef wasn't super excited about celebrating Valentine's Day this year.

5. What even...?

pinwheel cookie fail

Image: Pinterest Fail

These pinwheel cookies turned into pink cookie rings that look a lot like... well... I'll leave it to your imagination.

6. T.G.F.S. (Thank God for sprinkles)

chocolate covered strawberry poo

Image: Pinterest Fail

These chocolate-covered strawberries were supposed to look like hearts. Instead they look like precious li'l nuggets of, well, poo. Replace the sprinkles with kernels of corn, and I think we've all seen this before.

7. Try, try again

valentine food fail

valentine food fail

It happens to the best of us, but we know it's possible to make these look good. Unfortunately this attempt came out looking more like a broken tongue than a fortune cookie.

7. I like big buns and I cannot lie...

Big valentine buns

Big valentine buns

I'm going to be generous here and say the inspiration on this one was kind of a hot mess to begin with. Sprinkles truly can hide a multitude of sins, but in this case even that was too much to hope for. Maybe incorporate that blindfold you got for V-Day sexy times into your meal before serving this for dessert?

8. No more kisses

rice krispie fail

rice krispie fail

These are allegedly Rice Krispies Treats in the shape of chocolate kisses, but I think we can all agree that they are, 100 percent, baked potatoes, and no one is fooling anyone here.

9. Little Miss Piggy

bacon roses that look like pig snouts

Image: First We Feast

I think we can all agree that a good Valentine's Day gift should have zero chance of implying that the recipient is hoglike in any way. These bacon roses, which look more like pig snouts than flowers, unfortunately do just that.

10. Hide it with frosting

chocolate strawberry cake fail

Image: Creative Home

Chocolate and strawberry is a classic Valentine's Day flavor combo. Unfortunately this looks more like radioactive waste bubbling up from a pothole, but at least copious amounts of frosting, chocolate ganache and chocolate shards make it seem edible.

11. A heart too big

heart inside a cake fail

Image: Love Bake Create

This heart-inside-a-cake trick never seems to work out. The Valentine's Day lesson? Stop spending so much time trying to disguise your love. It'll probably just end up both burnt and raw, like this cake. (Wait, what was the lesson again?)

12. Say it with cake

please valentine cake

Image: Cake Wrecks

Begging for a date is never a good idea. Reinforcing your desperation with a bakery-decorated cake? Creepy enough to take this from Valentine's Day to Halloween territory.

13. Just gross

gross valentine cake

Image: Cake Wrecks

This cake looks like it's decorated with a pile of raw chopped beef and a few salmon fillets that a cat puked on. This one probably shouldn't have left the bakery.

14. Just go there, already!

you rock my cake

Image: Cake Wrecks

We all know what this cake wanted to say. And if you're going to take it this far, you might as well cross the line.

15. I see right through you

valentines day stained glass fail

Image: Pinterest Fail

These cookies look more like a windshield after a run-in with roadkill than an elegant stained glass window. Fingers crossed they taste at least as good as freshly "caught" raccoon!

16. It's yogurt... I swear

yogurt covered berries fail

yogurt covered berries fail

These yogurt-covered strawberries may have looked good before someone apparently vomited them onto a baking sheet. Perhaps the recipient was a baby bird, in which case, I'm sure they were much appreciated.

17. Is it the strawberries?

dried strawberries fail

Image: Pinstrosity

I'm starting to think that using strawberries in your Valentine's Day baking may just be a bad idea. These shriveled, burned, oozing berries are a far cry from the originals. They are, however, probably an accurate reflection of how your valentine's heart will feel when they see the treat you made them.

18. These will melt your heart

melted chocolate heart fail

melted chocolate heart fail

A sweet gesture on Valentine's Day can melt even the coldest heart. Unfortunately it looks like the giver of these treats misunderstood, melting the treats themselves instead of their paramour's heart.

19. Again with the berries

white chocolate berries fail

white chocolate berries fail

Berries + white chocolate. Sounds tasty, right? Well, these might still taste OK, but they look more like a preschool craft project covered in paste than an elegant Valentine's Day treat.

20. Say it with flowers

cupcake bouquet

cupcake bouquet

The good news is you can still tell these are cupcakes! The bad news is that they don't look like flowers, and it kind of looks like there are bugs in the frosting.

David Carr dies after being found unconscious in the Times' office

0
0

The world is a less witty place without David Carr's sharp tongue in it. The news of his passing comes just one day after the world lost the great 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon, 73, in a tragic car crash.

Carr, a journalist and columnist for the New York Times, whose wit and formidable talent was hailed by all, collapsed in the paper's newsroom and was later that evening pronounced dead at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. He was only 58 years old.

It was just earlier on Thursday evening when Carr moderated a discussion about the film Citizenfour, with Edward Snowden (via satellite) and director Laura Poitras.

The cause of Carr's death is still a mystery at this point.

More: Longtime CBS anchor Bob Simon killed in crash

Carr, who was a media critic for the Times, began writing for the paper in 2002 and was widely known for many things, including one of our personal favorites, his "Carpetbagger" column discussing the awards season's red carpet. He also wrote the "Media Equation" column and covered all kinds of other culture subjects for the Times.

Carr was the epitome of a true and pure journalist. He embodied the "get it first and get it right" mentality we all try to live up to as journalists.

Since the news of his passing broke, praises and sorrow-filled tweets and quotes have been rolling in like waves.

And you can read a Torrent of Tributes over at MotherJones.

More: 10 Things you didn't know about Maya Angelou

Carr was not what you would consider a typical Times reporter, according to him and his colleagues. In 2008, he published a memoir titled, The Night of the Gun, in which he chronicled his addiction to drugs and his life as a jailbird, an abusive boyfriend and a negligent parent before getting his life on track.

He said in an interview with The Daily Beast in 2011, "I'm not what you would call the classic Timesman. It's sort of a contextual thing: You have this button-down ivy growing everywhere, and this oddly shaped tumbleweed comes rolling through the middle of it. I joke about looking homeless, but my neck is bent, my voice is torn up, and there's always schmaltz on my shirt."

Spoken like a true New Yorker, although he was a Minnesota native who currently lived in New Jersey, and was a true Timesman, in my opinion. It is truly amazing the heights to which he rose, given the depths from which he came.

More: The Slap: Why the shows depiction of family life scares the crap out of me

He always had a good and inspiring message for young journalists. He told graduating UC Berkeley journalism students last year, "Being a journalist, I never feel bad talking to journalism students because it's a grand, grand caper. You get to leave, go talk to strangers, ask them anything, come back, type up their stories, edit the tape. That's not gonna retire your loans quickly as it should, and it's not gonna turn you into a person who's worried about what kind of car they should buy, but that's kind of as it should be, I mean, it beats working."

Carr is survived by his wife, Jill Rooney Carr, and his daughters Maddie, Erin and Meagan.

I could write for days about his accomplishments and life. But I'll leave you with one of the most quoted and now haunting lines of his biography, "I now inhabit a life I don't deserve, but we walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end anytime soon."

Anne Slowey's comments about North West at NYFW are grossly insensitive

0
0

Earlier this week, when the 19-month-old old tot attended her daddy Kanye West's Yeezus for Adidas show at New York Fashion Week, she couldn't stop sobbing.

More: Kim Kardashian reveals embarrassing Spanx secret, and we're right with her

North was sitting on mom Kim Kardashian's lap next to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Beyoncé, when she suddenly started screaming and crying, forcing her mom to take her backstage briefly before returning to her seat.

We're sure Wintour is not used to having crying children sitting next to her, but she didn't look too perturbed by the incident, apart from her pursed lips, as she sat perfectly still with her eyes guarded by her dark sunglasses.

More: Would Kim Kardashian mind if her daughter followed in her naked footsteps?

However, not everyone was as relaxed about North's tantrum. According to the New York Daily News, Elle magazine's Anne Slowey was very unimpressed. "Couldn't they leave it backstage?" she reportedly muttered.

According to the publication, Slowey was not in a good mood to begin with because she had to struggle through the crowds to get into West's show.

"Typical," Slowey reportedly said. "Typical celebrity crap. Like I really even care."

More: Anna Wintour confirms: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are tacky

Sure, fashion shows are no place for little kids, but that is exactly what North is, a little kid — certainly not an "it" — and she was only acting her age, so there is really no need to make insensitive comments about her.

However, Kris Jenner had a different opinion about her granddaughter's tantrum — she thought it was hilarious.

Taking to Instagram, the Kardashian momager posted a blurry picture that shows little North screaming and crying, alongside a caption, "Best pic AHAHAHAH North got a little fussy waiting for Daddy's Show to start!!!"

Jersey Shore alum Jenni "JWoww" Farley shared a picture of her post-baby plastic surgery in this "waist training" snapshot and explained on her website why she had her breast implants switched out in a post on her website she called, "My Ten Year Boob Makeover." JWoww had her first child, a daughter named Meilani, six months ago.

"A lot of you have been asking about my most recent boob job after seeing my waist training pic and I wanted to tell you more about it. I got my first one ten years ago after being inspired by my girl crush Carmen Electra– she had the most amazing boobs I had ever seen and I had to get them!" she wrote, giving props to her "boob man" surgeon, Stephen T. Greenberg.

"I went up to a 34F and couldn't be happier! But ten years later and with the birth of my angel baby Meilani, they had changed a bit, especially with breastfeeding!" she continued.

"You know, they recommend changing them every 10 years and I've had them for over 10 years, so it was time! Now they are nice and bouncy!!! I kept them the same size, so they are still Fs. I just switched them out from breast-feeding! They are so amazing right now and still have a soft, natural look to them thanks to my amazing doctor," she wrote.

The 28-year-old mom went on to say that she and her fiancé, Roger Mathews, are trying for another baby soon and she plans on getting them swapped out yet again after breastfeeding her second child.

"I'll get another one in a few years after I have my next baby. YES, I said it! I want another baby and that's why I wanted to get them done now before we try again and before our wedding too! I'm so excited for these big moments to happen in our lives and 2015 is definitely our year! Plus baby Meilani needs a younger sister or bother to play with… or boss around," she wrote.
