Couple kissing in front of fireworks

Celebrating the Fourth of July is fab, from sampling grilled hot dogs to biting into a slice of fresh watermelon to downing a cool cocktail .

Make your own explosions

But after all the pre-show buildup, sometimes the fireworks themselves can seem a little dull. We'll help you remedy that with a special Fourth of July fireworks kissing game. Who needs what's in the sky when you've got your arms wrapped around the real prize?

Since we're dealing in explosive materials , we needed to call in an expert to make heads or tails of this TNT business. We hit up fireworks expert Mike Tockstein, of Pyrotechnic Innovations, who educated us on what to expect from this year's Fourth fireworks displays... and what we should watch for in between locking lips!

An average large-scale Fourth of July fireworks show lasts about 15 to 20 minutes, Tockstein says. So start puckering up!

Fireworks kissing game

For every red, white or blue firework, give each other... A LITTLE ARM SQUEEZE.

The U-S-of-A's colors will be the most common hues during a Fourth display, Tockstein says.

For every jewel-toned firework , give each other... A FULL-ON HUG.

These shades are rare compared to basic blue, green and red. "Fireworks can be made to produce almost every color in the visible spectrum," Tockstein says. "Colors that do show up, just not as frequently, would be your off colors like aqua or magenta."

For every firework accompanied by a "whistle" sound effect, give each other... A PECK ON THE CHEEK.

That cool "shooooo-oooo!" sound is something called an "audible" effect, Tockstein says. "It's basically a small firework put inside of the larger shell. Think of it as an effect within an effect."

For every firework that explodes into a shape, give each other... A PECK ON THE LIPS.

Ooooh, you know the ones: Fireworks in the pattern of hearts, smiley faces, cubes, etc. . These types aren't used as often because they're pricey, which is why we're upgrading you and your viewing partner to a kiss here. "Anything that does not have a simple spherical break pattern is going to be more complex to build and ultimately more expensive," says Tockstein.

For every gold-glitter firework, give each other... A FULL-ON KISS.

Makeout time! Hot! Why are the sparkly fireworks so special? 'Cause they cost beaucoup bucks! In fact, there's no guarantee you'll see one in any given show. "Golden brocade shells are typically more expensive and not used as frequently, but probably one of the most beautiful effects you will see from an aerial firework," Tockstein says. "They burst with bright glittering gold stars that hang in the sky for an extended amount of time. When used, you will often see many of them back to back, temporarily filling the entire sky with gold."

But, kissing and fireworks enthusiasts beware, Tockstein warns: If you want to build some serious suspense, he recommends saving the smooching for after the show: "The only happy face pattern shell of the entire show might go off while you are kissing and you could miss it!" he says. "If you're with a loved one, save the kiss until right after the finale, as you will already be in sensory overload when hundreds of fireworks go off at once, which should make the kiss emotionally overwhelming!"

If you want to watch a live feed of Tockstein's crew in action as they load fireworks for a big show in Irvine, California this Fourth, bookmark this link! The images beamed from his three cameras will refresh every 20 seconds.

The lobe: What is it and should you test it out this summer?

There are a lot of hot hair trends this season, and the lobe is at the top of that list! Today, we're exploring the look and letting you know how to make it work for you!

Summer's hottest hair trend!

There are a lot of hot hair trends this season, and the lobe is at the top of that list! Today, we're exploring the look and letting you know how to make it work for you!

We consulted Justine Piecuch, a hair stylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, to get the scoop on summer's hottest hairstyle.

Here's what we found out!

What is it?: The lobe is a long bob.

What's its history?: "The lobe made its debut with a fun choppy angled version last year on Jennifer Aniston," Piecuch says.

Who it works best on: Piecuch says this style works best on almost any hair type and is best worn between the collar and slightly below mid neck line. "Depending on the look you're going for, either stick with one length or toss in subtle to choppy layers. If you're feeling super bold, get a bold bang!"

Why it's great: The lobe's length makes it a very versatile hairstyle. Since it's an easy style to work with, Piecuch says that women seem more apt to style and try new looks with a lobe.

Styling tips: You can wear your lobe in many ways, but one fun style Piecuch recommends includes lots of texture. To create the look, grab a clipless curling iron and hold it vertical to the head. Moving around the head, take vertical 1-inch sections and keep repeating until all hair is curled. From here, break up the curls by either blowing them with the dryer to mess them up or spraying in a texture spray for a beachy look.

Looking for more inspiration? This style also looks great ironed straight or quickly blown dry, Piecuch says.

5 films ready for a remake, stat!

With Hollywood rebooting Snow White twice this year along with every comic book hero around, here are a few movies that deserve a second shot along with suggestions for casting these iconic roles.

OK, I have to admit that the idea of remaking a film that was already great makes me itch. Every time I hear rumors of a new Wizard of Oz I start clawing my neck. But then I take a deep breath and remind myself how occasionally Hollywood gets it right, like with my favorite film of 2011, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The American remake kicked the Swedish version’s butt. So, keeping a bottle of Calamine Lotion within reach, here I offer five films that could be better the second time around.

frankenstein movie poster

Frankenstein. Mary Shelley was only 18 years old when she penned her novel as part of a friendly competition amongst bored writers on vacation in Italy. Frankenstein's 200th anniversary will take place in 2015, so there may be enough time to get the film going to celebrate its birthday. Shelley made good dramatic use of what was then the new-fangled science of electricity. Of course today, science has given us stem cell research and genetics. A scientist creating a human using these elements isn’t that far-fetched and could create a cautionary tale about science overstepping its bounds. I’d cast Elizabeth Banks as the scientist with too much hubris and Andrew Garfield as the creature who demands to know his purpose and throw in a romantic tryst . If a woman can make a man, she might as well make one for herself, right?

Channing Tatum in hot threesome?

Y Tu Mama Tambien. No shame in remaking this steamy film! Who wouldn’t want to re-create the hottest threesome ever? I’d set it in San Diego with the guys taking a trip down to Mexico and picking up their favorite teacher along the way. I’d cast Channing Tatum and Henry Cavill as the sexually indulgent best friends and the voluptuous Christina Hendricks as their teacher with a secret.

Brad Pitt as a country star?

Tender Mercies. This movie had everything -- intense, flawed characters, hot romance, and good old country music. Pulling this off again would take some great actors, so I’d cast Brad Pitt as the aging, alcoholic western crooner and Malin Akerman as the young widow who inspires him to restart his career. If Lucinda Williams would agree to write a few songs, this could be a hit!

Dave Franco tough guy

The Breakfast Club. Yes, I’m getting a little itchy thinking about it just because the original is so good. But high school never gets easier, so why not bring this great story to a new generation? I’d cast Chloe Grace Moretz as the Molly Ringwald character and Isabelle Fuhrman as the Ally Sheedy character. Dave Franco could be fantastic reprising the role that Judd Nelson made famous. OK, I do really think this could work!

Marion Cotillard in Casablanca?

Casablanca. Why remake what could be the best film ever made? This sounds weird, but I’d just love to see this gorgeous love story told in vivid color. I’d cast Marion Cotillard as the lovely but fragile Ingrid Bergman character and Robert Downey Jr. as the Humphrey Bogart character. I think Downey Jr. has just enough dry wit and charm to reinvent Bogart’s classic role. Of course, the ending would need to change just to keep it fresh.

What movie remakes do you want to see?

SheKnows stops by Kristin Bauer’s eco-friendly Toluca Lake home to chat with the actress about everything from her tireless efforts in animal activism to her hottie co-star Alexander Skarsgard.

A Vegan Vampire

Come meet Kristin’s family and explore her world with us in this month’s Girl Crush.

If you’re a fan of True Blood, then you know Kristin Bauer's character Pam is one vampire you don’t want to mess with. Although Bauer herself can be a bit feisty, she’s more bleeding-heart than blood-sucker.

For years Bauer has campaigned for animal rights, and practiced what she preached by rescuing animals from local shelters.

On our visit to her home and art studio recently, we had the privilege of meeting some of the gang: Asher Dasher Crasher Bauer van Straten, Osmond Wiggles Bauer van Straten, and Abigail Snickelberg Bauer van Straten .

Kristin’s tips on getting involved with helping animals

Along with her pets, Bauer shares her home with her husband, musician Abri van Straten, who she met in a whirlwind romance three years ago.

True Blood's Kristin Bauer tells her fairy tale love story >>

5 Tips to help animals

  1. Go to www.caringconsumer.com and make sure the products you buy and therefore the companies you support don't test on animals, and do a caring consumer audit of your household products.
  2. NEVER buy an animal! Adopt, don't shop!
  3. Donate any amount to an animal charity. The economy hit animal charities the hardest.
  4. EAT LESS MEAT!
  5. Walk your own dogs, I recommend the Cesar way. They will love you for it and also not eat your couch.

Although she's a vegan and he's a meat eater, Abri shares Kristin’s love of animals and contributes to her charity efforts.

"We want to go to Kenya [this summer] to try to do something about the elephant ivory poaching trade, which is unfortunately on a massive upsurge," Kristin said. "I’m actually thinking about filming a documentary while I’m there."

Now that True Blood Season 5 is wrapping, she’ll have time to do that. Kristin and the cast have spent months filming the highly anticipated season and fans are finally getting a taste of her character Pam’s back story.

"Her relationship with Eric will be revealed," Kristin told us. "For four years we’ve been wondering, Alex and I, what our relationship was, and when we finally read it on the page, it was just brilliant."

We can’t wait to see that play out onscreen! Skarsgard is a major heartthrob, and, we were happy to learn from Kristin, an absolute gentleman in real life.

"He’s much sexier in person," Kristin revealed. "He’s very funny and very sweet. I just love Alex. We laugh a lot. His wit and his humor are so unique and wonderful. He’s so quick."

"He’s much sexier in person. He’s very funny and very sweet. I just love Alex."

Kristin Bauer in True Blood

Kristin says the entire cast is a blast to work with and that with all the new babies in the True Blood family, the set has really become a full house.

"Sam Trammell had two boys last year, so Gus and Winston came by the set last week," Kristin said. "It’s a family set and everyone brings their dogs."

There will be one more addition when Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin , welcome their first child together in the fall.

Check out Anna Paquin's baby bump >>

"She’s a fabulous person and I have such respect for her," Kristin said. "I just love her and the cast, so that is just a lucky baby."

So does Kristin see children in her own future?

"We’ve started talking about it," Kristin told SheKnows. "I’m such a rescuer, so that is more the area that I would go. It kills me that there are kids in foster homes and unwanted children, so [adoption] to me would be more up my alley."

In the meantime, though, Kristin is extremely busy with an array of projects. The actress is currently giving her home a total eco-friendly makeover.

"I was raised with a real common sense attitude that you clean up after yourself," Kristin said. "If I ruined my Barbie, I didn’t just get another one. You plan ahead and you know the resources that you have and you work within those boundaries."

5 Tips to being eco-friendly

  1. Mainly vote with your dollars. Look at what you buy. Whose mortgage are you paying? Do you like what this company does to people, the earth?
  2. Buy organic.
  3. Buy recycled.
  4. Recycle everything! Don't throw plastic in the trash. That gets dumped in someone else's back yard and it's all God's back yard.
  5. Use less plastic. Plastic is oil. Get a water filter in your house. Use cloth grocery bags.

Kristin’s tips to being eco-friendly

With the spare time she has left, Kristin enjoys oil painting, tending to a slowly blossoming garden, and taking cooking classes with Abri.

"He’s been really lovely about trying to learn what a vegetable is," laughed Kristin. "It’s really sweet, he thought couscous was a vegetable when we met!"

"... He thought couscous was a vegetable when we met!"

Sally Field on aging in Hollywood: “It’s hard to look at yourself”

Two of Hollywood’s heavy hitters, Sally Field and Martin Sheen, share their experience filming The Amazing Spider-Man and explain how 3D cameras change everything.

Sally Field and Martin Sheen, The Amazing Spider-Man

Sally Field looked amazing in her black skinny jeans, white ruffled blazer black, and black high heels, while promoting The Amazing Spider-Man recently.

So you might be surprised to hear that the 65-year-old is bristling at the thought of watching herself in the big screen 3D flick this summer.

“I’ve reached an age where it’s hard to look at yourself,” Sally told reporters. “I might not even see the movie, don’t tell anyone out there. It’s a very selfish reason. It’s 3D for god’s sake! It’s such a small, vain little thing, but it’s true. I don’t like watching myself at all, I never have.”

Spider-Man's Emma Stone: "I'm no supermodel" >>

Well, we think she looks fabulous after more than five decades in the business. Her co-star, Martin Sheen, seemed to agree as well, telling Fields, “I like to watch you.”

Sally and Martin play Peter Parker’s famous Aunt May and Uncle Ben in the film, and have some pretty emotional scenes with Andrew Garfield. The two seasoned performers said it was joy to work with the blossoming actor, and raved about his talent.

“This young man, and Sally would agree, is a very, very special guy,” Martin said. “Watching him work was so gratifying. He was so generous with us, because he had to do some heavy emotional work and the set was on fire when he went to those places. We just all really enjoyed each other’s company.”

It is those home scenes with Garfield, Field and Sheen that really add the human angle to the typically action-packed series. But these weren’t your typical scenes in a drama. Field explained how difficult it was to film with massive 3D cameras in her face.

“What was bizarre for me, because I’ve been doing this for so long, that this little kitchen scene was filmed with a hand-held 3D camera, which means it is enormous and it is being held up on a bungee cord by guys up above,” Field said. “There was a little part of me saying, ‘Get it as far away from my face. I will never see this movie for as long as I live.’ It is kind of amazing, not losing your focus when we’re really maneuvering around this huge piece of equipment.”

Well, we think Sally, Andrew and Martin did an amazing job, and we’re guessing she’ll agree when she eventually sees it!

Catch them in The Amazing Spider-Man, in theaters July 4th.

Ted knocks out Magic Mike for box office No. 1

Ted, the rated R comedy about a man and his raunchy teddy bear takes audiences by surprise this weekend as it climbed the charts to number one.

Ted

Apparently, watching a movie about an incurable man-child is more than a little entertaining, especially if he comes with his own talking teddy bear who uses the F-bomb more than Mark Wahlberg himself.

Ted, the feature film debut of Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy, ranked number one in the country this weekend, grossing an estimated $52.5 million in box office returns, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Movie review: Dirty Fozzie is the new hot sex position >>

The Channing Tatum movie that was inspired by a true story of working as a male stripper, Magic Mike, grossed an estimated $38 million at the box office bringing it to number two. That’s still a lot of cash for one naked Channing, but not enough to beat a talking bear. Come on ladies, where's your focus...?

Movie review: Fall under Channing's spell with his magic wand >>

Disney/Pixar’s Brave held onto a top 10 spot at number three with $35.5 million in box office returns. The story of a fiery Scottish princess who doesn’t want to get married resonated with kids and families.

Movie review: Brave's girl power movie is a Pixar pioneer >>

Tyler Perry’s most recent Madea movie, Madea’s Witness Protection, grossed $27 million bringing it in at number four. This time Madea -- the outspoken old lady played by Perry himself -- gets in a heap of trouble when a New Yorker from the witness relocation program is forced to live with her family in her small southern town.

Ranking fifth in box office returns with an estimated $12.5 million is Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. The story of our favorite zoo characters who are trying desperately to get back to New York jump started a summer animation winning streak with its previous number one status.

Movie review: Madagascar 3 is more than just a circus act >>

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the story of a president who really gets the job done when it comes to blood suckers, ranked sixth this week with an estimated $6.2 million in box office returns.

Movie review: Four scores and seven vampires ago... >>

The sci-fi space exploration movie from Ridley Scott, Prometheus, ranked seventh this week with an estimated $5.1 million in box office returns. The film stars Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron and takes an interesting view on the origins of the human race.

Movie review: Move over HAL, David Version 8 is on Prometheus >>

Moonrise Kingdom, the little indie movie that could from director Wes Anderson, released wide this week and earned more than $5 million in box office returns bringing it to number eight.

Movie review: Moonrise Kingdom gives tween angst a boost >>

Snow White and the Huntsman came in at number nine with $4.5 million, and People Like Us, the newly released drama starring Elizabeth Banks and Chris Pine about finding lost family in the time of tragedy grossed $4.2 million, giving it a spot at number 10.

Michael Fassbender isn't a beefy muscleman. He's not hyper-masculine. He doesn't have long, flowing Samson locks or a super-hetero beard. But we want him. So badly. Like, now. Who is this guy, and why are we so attracted to him? Good question, actually. True, we watched him strip down to nothing in the sex thriller Shame and spank Keira Knightley while playing Carl Jung in A Dangerous Method. Now, he's made the leap to inarguable leading man in the summer blockbuster Prometheus. But despite his previous roles, one very specific thing speaks volumes about Michael Fassbender: In what is probably the most ringing endorsement of anyone's sex appeal ever, he's on many fans' short lists to play Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie. Michael Fassbender isn't a beefy muscleman. He's not hyper-masculine. He doesn't have long, flowing Samson locks or a super-hetero beard. But we want him. So badly. Like, now.

This stud strips away our inhibitions

Yep. He's sexy, all right.

Why we love him

This Irish-German fox snuck up on us after a series of minor roles in major films. And we're so glad he did!

Michael Fassbender

Born: April 2, 1977

Hometown: Heidelberg, Germany

Height: 6'

His sex appeal is so raw, it's almost scary

"Really Michael, honestly, you can play golf like this with your hands behind your back. Go for it, man, do it!"

Getting an eyeful of Fassy's generous package in Shame caused quite the stir among filmgoers — even George Clooney, who remarked at the Golden Globes, “I would like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal nude responsibly that I had. Really Michael, honestly, you can play golf like this with your hands behind your back. Go for it, man, do it!"

But the size of what he has to offer isn't the sole reason why we find Michael so attractive. The way a man carries himself — particularly this man — goes farther toward stoking our imagination than physical endowment. Still, we're not exactly, um, disappointed by what he's packing.

GQ asked him what he makes of all of the fuss over that very specific body part of his:

"It's fun to a point... and after a certain point you worry that it kind of detracts from the movie. But there's nothing I can do. I just have to laugh it off. I can. Pretty much. Because I take my work seriously but I can't take myself too seriously. I'm in such a crazy privileged position — s***, this is the pinnacle of the dream when I was 17... Nobody wants to hear really how difficult it is."

Pardon us while we let the idea of a well-endowed, attractive and humble man wash over us. Ahhhh.

Michael Fassbender

He might take on the character of Christian Grey

A few very vocal Fifty Shades of Grey enthusiasts won't rest until Fassy is cast as Christian Grey in the tale's film component. There's even a Facebook page titled "Michael Fassbender for Christian Grey."

Tell us: Who do you think should play Christian Grey? Share your pick in the comments below!

Says one fan about Fassy's potential to be Grey: "Christian Grey is a man filled with demons from a dark past. He is best left to the one man who could play him without resorting to cliché or textbook acting techniques. Fans want a Christian who is bold, damaged and believable. It’s a task for Michael Fassbender. No pretty boy will do."

He plays superheroes as well as he does academics

He breathed life into the comic book character Magneto in last year's X-Men: First Class, and he's currently saving the planet onscreen in the sci-fi flick Prometheus. But he's also lent us an indelible image of psychoanalyst Carl Jung and embodied a sex addict named Brandon in Shame.

“I must admit — I initially thought it might be fun," he told W about Shame. "You hear ‘sex,’ and you think… sex! But this was definitely the hardest job I’ve done. I can usually shake a character off, but I couldn’t shake Brandon. He had no sensual enjoyment in his life, and since we filmed the movie so quickly, I found myself living in his skin. Keeping him close to me was exhausting, cold, horrible. As Brandon, I never ate. He had one container of Chinese food in his fridge. All that sex and he didn’t have any pleasure.”

“That sad container of noodles tells you more about Brandon than any nudity.”

"That sad container of noodles tells you more about Brandon than any nudity."

We love it when our pieces of man candy come infused with a little bit of depth.

Michael Fassbender's relationship status:

Nicole Beharie and Michael Fassbender

Dipping his pen in the company ink, Fassbender recently said he is now dating his Shame costar, relatively unknown actress Nicole Beharie, 27, known for her roles in American Violet and The Good Wife.

But forget any notion of clandestine meetings after shooting: "Nothing happened while we were filming," he told GQ. "We started talking more on the promotion thing. So, yeah, it just sort of unfolded like that."

Nothing like a nice romantic surprise after a bout of hard work.

The first 5 things Katie Holmes will do after her divorce

$
0

We’ve all watched a much different Katie emerge after marrying Tom Cruise. We've seen a glowing, confident, impeccably dressed young woman in love seemingly slip away into a grumpy housewife with dirty hair. Those days are over. Now that Katie has declared her independence from Tom-Tom, here is what we suspect her immediate to-do list consists of.…

Katie Holmes divorceGo on antidepressants

Tom Cruise is against psychiatry, as he arrogantly spelled out to Matt Lauer. As if we hadn’t figured that out for ourselves after the infamous Oprah-couch jumping spectacle. We’re not suggesting Katie needs or wants antidepressants, but with Mr. “I know the history of psychiatry and you don’t” out of the picture, at least Katie has the option of antidepressants. Divorce is tough. With Thomas-the-Great out of the way, Katie can see 10 different shrinks if she wants to!

Star in a movie again

We didn’t see much of Katie after she became a part of TomKat, and that may have been her choice. With reports of Tom being a raging control freak, maybe it wasn’t. We liked Mad Money and all, but we’re just ready to see Katie celebrate her divorce with a string of blockbusters that will make Rock of Ages an even bigger embarrassment.

Rock of Ages, or Flop of Ages? >>

Get back to her glamorous self

Before marrying TC, we grew accustomed to seeing a meticulously glammed and groomed Katie. If we’ve seen her at all, it’s been pictures of her with her daughter, Suri, who always looks like a fashion plate, while Mommy looks like she’s headed to the Laundromat. Katie’s hair is often in disarray, and she’s wearing baggy jeans and little to no makeup. She looks like someone in the bowels of a depression who wasn’t allowed to do anything about it. Remember Katie, depression hurts on the outside, too. Gurl, clean your fine self up and start setting the standard for grace and glamour again!

Gain some freakin’ weight

Katie will no doubt not miss the Scientology-based “Purification Rundowns” that include vitamins, saunas and herbs, but evidently, no food. Katie’s frail frame can’t sustain the typical divorce diet that includes shucking about 170 pounds of dead weight. Get this girl a cheeseburger -- and get her another one while she’s waiting.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes split! >>

Rebuild a relationship with her family

It was reported that the Holmes/Cruise union put a deep strain on the relationship between Katie and her Catholic parents, whose belief system didn’t really align with L. Ron Hubbard and his Scientology suggestions. Either that or they didn’t care for how Tom throws his head back and lets loose with a maniacal laugh that makes him sound like a demented villain. Whatever the reason, Katie can reunite with her family, without clearing it with anyone first.

Mexican sunset cocktail

How to... create the perfect Mexican sunset

In need of a tasteful vacation? Follow these basic steps to make a wonderful drink that will easily take your mind off those hot days.

Step 1: A silver touch

In a medium margarita glass, place 1 ounce of silver tequila in your cup, in a brand of your choice. Many suggest Patron Silver tequila, but any tequila off your shelf will do.

Step 2: Mezcal, please

Add ½ ounce of mezcal to your mixture. Mezcal is quite the unusual beverage, which gives this mixture the "smoky" undertone. Mezcal is an alcoholic drink that derives from the maguey plant, which is a form of agave.

Step 3: One lime at a time

Take 1 ounce of lime juice and add it to your concoction. This will give your drink that pucker essence. It will also offset any strong overtones your drink may have.

Step 4: There will be blood

Pour in 1-1/2 ounces of blood-orange simple syrup. This will give your drink that sweet sensation, and create a balance between sweet and sour. Also, it is the final touch that gives your drink that "sunset" coloring.

Step 5: Pour

Pour a small amount of ice into your glass. After adding ice, feel free to add a slice of lime to the rim of the drink to create the perfect image of your creation: the Mexican Sunset. Enjoy!

Scientology's plans for Suri: Reason for Tom, Katie's divorce?

$

Since the time Katie Holmes married Tom Cruise, Scientology-watchers half-jokingly speculated about whether the actress could escape the clinches of the controversial religion. Now, there is intense speculation about Scientology's role in the divorce, particularly the timing of their split, which coincides with daughter Suri's sixth birthday, a notable age for church members.

Katie, Suri Scientology

Of course, no one really knows "why" the celebrity couple split Friday, other than the celebrities themselves.

But that isn't stopping bloggers and celeb-watchers alike from asking: "Why?"

And one reason behind the divorce that keeps rearing its head time and time again: Scientology.

The Daily Beast reports Holmes converted to the religion started by pulp fiction author L. Ron Hubbard before marrying Cruise in late 2006.

But the site contends the 33-year-old actress hasn't been seen inside a Scientology Church for "some time," and that she even enrolled Suri in a Catholic preschool.

Suri could have been subjected to intense interrogation

Despite this, there is no way around the timing of the divorce for avid Scientology-watchers and ex-Scientologists.

After all, Suri turned six in April. That number really means something in Scientology circles.

That's when children may be subjected to a form of interrogation called "security checking."

Tony Ortega has been writing about Scientology for nearly two decades.

He's developed a following among ex-members as well as diehards still in the church. The latter group both monitors his blog at the Village Voice, and used to weigh in a heck of a lot more frequently than in recent months about the virtues of the religion.

By way of Ortega, Scientology's founder Hubbard introduced "sec checking" as a means of interrogation to weed out any "covert" threats within the organization.

The technique, in part, involves a seemingly never-ending list of questions children as young as six, Suri's age, may be asked. Some of those questions may be found here by scrolling down a bit.

The questions range from strange to downright spooky and dark for a grade-schooler

Before you write this off as yet some more insight into the strange alien world of Scientology where there is, indeed, a creation story involving aliens, consider this: Many ex members contend that sec checking is yet another tool that has been used to turn children against parents, ripping families apart by getting the youngest members to rat on their own flesh and blood.

Suri was old enough to join radical Sea Org

TMZ also notes Suri had passed another big Scientology milestone last year.

They contend Katie was freaking out over the prospect that her daughter may be recruited into the Sea Org -- the highly regimented "division" of the religion.

Members as young as age 5 sign "a one-billion-year pledge to symbolize their eternal commitment to the religion and it is still signed by all members today," according to the Scientology website.

It's hard to imagine a celebrity daughter like Suri would be exposed to the type of long hours, low pay, and overall harsh conditions documented by Scientology-watchers like Ortega.

When you typically hear about the youngest members joining the Sea Org they were often born into Scientology, and know nothing other than the religion.

And these Sea Org members bow down to celebs like Cruise and family.

Regardless, there are two curious aspects surrounding the timing of the divorce.

Who knows? They just may show themselves during what's poised to be one the biggest knock-down, drag-out celebrity divorce showdowns in recent times.

A spectrum of Grey

Christian Grey — yes, that Christian Grey — has autism. How do I know? Christian Grey has autism

Christian Grey — yes, that Christian Grey — has autism. How do I know? Well, for starters, I’ve read the Fifty Shades trilogy at least five times, so in addition to making me one of the more pathetic people in this world, it also makes be an armchair expert on the comings and goings of Christian Grey.

To be honest, the first time I read the books, it was for the illicit sex. The second time was to process what I read. The third, fourth and fifth times was to delve deeper into Mr. Grey’s neurological and psychological impulses. Something about his mannerisms and the way he interacted with others, spoke to me on a profound level.

Secondly, I know autism when I see it. Autism and my family have had a complicated, often contentious “frenemy-like” relationship for four plus years. Ethan, my 6-year-old son, was diagnosed at age 2.

For those not familiar with autism, Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, defines autism and autism spectrum disorder , as both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees , by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.

"If he could read body language, he wouldn’t need the dreaded 'safe word' would he?"

Appalled at my audacity to label everyone’s favorite Dom with autism? Let me assure you that autism isn’t a dirty or shameful thing in my household. Nor should it be in anyone’s household. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook and the like wouldn’t be the standard-bearers they are today without having employees with autism and ASD. It's no surprise that the autism and ASD populations in tech hubs like Silicon Valley, California and Redmond, Washington have incredibly high autism populations.

But, let’s get back to Mr. Grey and my autism theory. Based on the criteria and symptoms of autism and autism spectrum disorder, I hereby submit to you several examples of Mr. Grey’s autistic behaviors:

Difficulty with social interactions and relationships

Christian Grey…

  • Dislikes direct eye contact, and can’t read body language. If he could read body language, he wouldn’t need the dreaded “safe word” would he?
  • Is unable to make friends. Well, he does have one friend. But, only because she shares his predilection for pain.
  • Lacks empathy. He doesn’t understand why someone finds it overwhelming to receive expensive books, cars and computers. Truthfully, I don’t understand why someone would mind receiving these gifts, so let’s move on to another example…
  • Can only engage in a relationship if a person signs and adheres to a specific set of rules and regulations, which make him comfortable. He’s more rigid than one of his bamboo canes, apparently!

Difficulty with verbal and non-verbal communication

Christian Grey…

  • Had a speech delay until the age of 6. Children should babble by 12 months and speak words by 16 months.
  • Converses with people in a flat, abrupt, monosyllabic manner, and finds nothing wrong with that affect. He’s wasn’t kidding when he said he is “not a hearts and flowers kind of guy.”
  • Has difficulty understanding humor or implied meaning. He interprets conversation on a word-for-word basis, and misses the overall meaning. I believe the word “obtuse” has been bandied about.

Repetitive and stereotyped behaviors

Christian Grey…

  • Must have order and control in every aspect of his life. Paddles and canes lined up in size order? Check. Toys in every available shape, size and color? Double check.
  • Is preoccupied with certain topics. Well, there’s sex. And then there’s sex. And of course once you’re done with sex, you can always have more sex. To his credit, though, Mr. Grey is also slightly interested in solar energy and agriculture.
  • Engages in stereotyped behaviors. He constantly runs his fingers through his hair, waves his arms around, and repetitively smells his girlfriend’s hair.

By his own admission, Christian Grey tried to conquer his demons through several psychotherapeutic approaches, which included ‘Congitivism, Freud, functionalism, Gestalt, behaviorism… ’ None succeeded. Perhaps what Christian Grey really needed was a BCBA, or Board Certified Behavior Therapist, to help modify his behaviors, to be a more socially engaged member of society.

Of course, Christian is but a fictional character. In reality, autism affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys. People with autism have made tremendous contributions to every facet of society — technology, arts and sciences, athletics, real estate, etc. That’s a fact, in black and white. And, there’s absolutely nothing “Grey“ about that.

Celebrate safely

The July 4th holiday can be a blast! As you plan for the festivities, don't forget to take a few simple steps to help ensure the safety of your furry family members this season. Pet hazards can range from fireworks to food to high temps. Do your part to keep your pets safe while you celebrate.

It's time to celebrate but what becomes of your pets during the July 4th festivities? As you prepare to plan the perfect party atmosphere for your friends, be sure to include your furry friends in the fun, too. A few reminders can help keep your pets safe as you celebrate the holiday.

Fireworks frenzy

The noise and excitement that goes along with fireworks can be scary for your pets. Keep the following in mind to help your pets stay safe and feel secure:

  • Don't take your pets to fireworks events. Pets could have an unexpected reaction to fireworks, so be on the safe side and leave them at home.
  • When at home, don't leave your pets outside if fireworks can be heard in the distance.
  • If you're having a gathering and you're able to watch the fireworks from home, make sure your pet has a quiet place to stay in the house with low lighting. You may consider having a crate available for your dog, helping to create a secure feeling.
  • If your dog becomes scared, don't scold or say "good boy/girl," as this is confusing. Instead, try to distract him or her with an activity like playing ball or another game.
  • If you know your dog will react badly to fireworks noise, talk to your vet in advance about the possibility of prescribing tranquilizers to help.

Review these seven tips to keep pets safe >>

Dog bowlHydration situation

It's hot outside. July is typically one of the warmest summer months and, just like humans need to stay hydrated, so do pets. Keep your pet's water bowl filled with fresh, clean water to enjoy. If your pets are outside, keep their water bowls in a shady spot and refill often.

Tread lightly

Asphalt streets, cement sidewalks and many other outdoor walkway surfaces can get hot, especially for an animal's paw pads. If you'd like your pet to join in your outdoor celebrations, try to make sure there is a nice, shady spot on the grass or another surface area that doesn't get too hot. Also remember to walk your dog early in the morning or once the sun goes down. Consider investing in booties to cover your pet's paws.

Host a poolside party for pets and people >>

Food fight

As a member of your family, your pets are likely invited to your backyard barbecues, too. Keep human food and drinks out of reach of your pets. Be sure your guests aren't feeding food to them. Some people think human food makes good snacks for pets, but a change in diet could cause tummy troubles for your furry friends. Certain foods can be poisonous to pets. Foods you should never feed pets:

  • Avocados
  • Onions and garlic
  • Grapes or raisins
  • Dairy products
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Candy or gum
  • Chocolate
  • Raw eggs
  • Peaches or plums
  • Salt
  • Yeast dough

Parking violation

Did you forget something for your big barbecue and need to stop at the store? Even if it's "just for a few minutes," never leave your pets alone in a car on hot days. Leaving the windows down and parking in the shade isn't good enough. Temperatures rise quickly on the inside of a vehicle. Since dogs sweat differently than humans, they're not able to cool themselves down enough while stuck in a hot car. In some states it's illegal to leave a pet in a car during extreme weather. Find out which states make it illegal and the provisions.

Don't forget about your pets during the holidays. Keep them safe and secure so everyone can enjoy the fun.

Rosie Pope

Meet rosie pope

Rosie Pope is the star of the hit Bravo TV series, Pregnant in Heels. But that’s not all… Rosie has her hand in almost every parenting decision and loves every minute of her busy life!

Rosie tells us how she makes the most of her family time and which baby gear items are her saving grace at the moment.

Three kids + three jobs = six "babies"

In addition to raising a family, Rosie Pope and her husband Daron Pope, have a demanding — and very public — work relationship. With their clothing line, Rosie Pope Maternity, parenting education classes at Mom Prep and their family life exposed on the hit Bravo TV show, Pregnant in Heels, these parents have their hands — and hearts — full. Working together on business decisions is just a small part of their relationship — the couple also have three young children, J.R., Wellington and new baby girl, Vivienne.

While Rosie wasn’t able to take a true maternity leave due to work demands, she feels very fortunate to have the luxury of bringing her new daughter with her wherever she goes. And with the support of her husband, Rosie feels even more empowered and ready to tackle her busy, yet fulfilling days of helping other parents, while parenting her own children. But no matter what Rosie has scheduled in her day, she still manages to enjoy quality moments and parenting decisions with her kids — even down to approving the clothes her husband picks for their kids.

Rosie PopeParenting in the spotlight

Although you would never know it just by watching her on TV, Rosie admits to being a fairly private person. But parenting in the spotlight for almost two full seasons hasn’t necessarily made her more comfortable — she still believes she can be very socially awkward. "Unless I can have a drink to loosen up, which, of course, was not possible while I was pregnant," says Pope. And even though most viewers think she’s full of parenting knowledge, tricks and tips, she still feels like every other mother — filled with anxious moments and constant worry about whether or not she’s doing the right things for her children.

Rosie Pope opens up to fans by live tweeting labor >>

How Pregnant in Heels has changed Rosie’s life

Rosie has a true passion for helping families through pregnancy and beyond with her valuable parenting resources and tools. Throughout the show, she has had the opportunity to meet new people and experience many different situations — all of which have positively challenged, empowered and motivated Rosie to do more and help more people achieve their goal — a family. Recently in the show, Rosie traveled to Los Angeles to work with a gay couple and a surrogate mother. Having never worked with a surrogate before, Rosie was incredibly touched by this family’s story. “The experience was so empowering, it motivated me even more to help people become a family… no matter how they get there,” Pope said.

Rosie Pope’s must-have baby essentials and baby gear

Rosie Pope's essential baby gear

Because Rosie is always on the go, having practical baby items to make her life easier is a necessity. Keeping with her own advice, Rosie has chosen a stroller that's compatible with an infant car seat to act as a stroller system. But which stroller is newest baby Pope riding in? That would be the stylish Quinny Moodd paired with the Maxi-Cosi Mico infant car seat, of course.

As for a diaper bag, Rosie designed her own, the London Shopper. The London Shopper has discrete stroller straps because Pope is a huge believer that all diaper bags should have stroller straps and be easily attachable to a stroller. “I’ve seen too many new moms struggling with diaper bags on their shoulder while trying to push a stroller or carry a baby,” says Rosie.

Because Rosie is always on the move, she has chosen a combination of breast and bottle-feeding. To make the transitions between the two easier for both Rosie and baby Vivienne, they use the new Avent Natural bottle.

Dog eating raw food

Is a raw diet right for your pooch?

From kibble to wet food to raw diets and more, the options for feeding your dog are dizzying. While not a new concept, a raw diet for dogs has become trendy in recent years.

But what exactly is a raw food diet for dogs and is it right for you and your four-legged family member? Read on to learn the basics.

What is a raw diet for dogs?

Simply put, a raw diet for dogs is a way of feeding that includes meals composed primarily of raw meat. Developed by Dr. Ian Billinghurst, the BARF diet, which stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food, is one of the most popular raw feeding models today. Foods commonly found in a raw diet for dogs are raw meat and raw meaty bones , organ meat, eggs, dairy, fruits and vegetables. Typically, a healthy adult dog eats between 2 and 4 percent of its body weight per day.

Pros and cons of feeding a raw diet

Many pet owners who feed raw say their pet's health has improved — and in some cases, visibly. Putting your dog on a raw diet can lead to some prettying fascinating results such as increased energy, a shinier coat, smaller more compact stools that don't smell, better digestive function, brighter eyes, an improvement in skin conditions and more. But be aware that feeding raw is not the right choice for everyone. It's a commitment that can be costly, time-consuming if prepared at home and could result in sick pooch if you're not providing adequate nutrition.

Fact: The pet industry is a booming business and is expected to top $52 billion in sales in 2012, according to the American Pet Products Association. More than $20 billion is spent on food alone!

What are some raw diet feeding options?

The three main options for feeding raw are homemade, frozen and freeze-dried meals. The latter two are available commercially and can make mealtime a snap. All you have to do is take out the food and put it in a bowl! Many pet owners who feed raw combine one or more of the aforementioned feeding options, depending on one's individual budget, personal preference and time.

1

Homemade

Making your dog's food from scratch gives you total control over what goes into the food bowl but is the most time-consuming option. Buying the food, planning out meals and preparing them does take time but it can be well worth it.

2

Frozen

Many pet food companies make commercially available frozen raw dog food that's already prepared in the form of nuggets or patties. Frozen meals containing duck, beef, chicken, rabbit and more are readily available in pet shops and online.

3

Freeze-dried

This type of raw food consists of nuggets or patties that can be rehydrated at mealtime with a bit of water. Complete and well-balanced, the freeze-dried meal option is ideal when you're traveling and when you're short on freezer space.

Check out companies like Stella & Chewy's for a wide product selection of frozen and freeze-dried raw meals for your pet in yummy flavors like Duck Duck Goose, Surf & Turf, Stella's Super Beef and others. Nature's Variety also has a complete raw product line, including rabbit, duck, bison and more.

Depending on your dog's size and dietary requirements and the feeding option you choose, the cost of feeding your dog a raw diet will vary. Generally speaking though, feeding raw costs significantly more than a high-quality kibble. But when you factor in the health benefits and overall impact, many pet owners say they end up saving money since their pet doesn't require as many vet visits.

Raw dog food

Tip: The easiest way to prepare homemade meals is to make a batch of food over the weekend for the week ahead and freeze it into individually wrapped patties. Then during the week, all you have to do is reach into your freezer.

Do keep in mind that your dog's health depends on a balanced diet and a raw diet does not consist of just throwing scraps of table food or raw meat in your dog's bowl. If not done correctly, a raw diet could make your dog sick from a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Always consult your veterinarian before switching your dog's diet. When done correctly, a raw diet can be a rewarding feeding option for both you and your pet.

Is your mattress ruining your sex life?

$
0
0
You’ve been a little grumpy lately. You haven’t been sleeping well and you’ve spent so much time at the coffee shop down the street that you wish you could invest in a caffeine IV drip instead. Worse, your sex life has been rather lackluster as of late, so even that’s not cheering you up. It’s a vicious cycle.

Couple laying back to back in bed

What you probably haven’t considered is the fact that the same object responsible for your bad sleep – your crummy old mattress – is also contributing to your ho-hum sex life. It may seem innocent, but your mattress can make or break your daily contentment – in more ways than one.

The downfall of your sex life

You’re well aware of the havoc your mattress can wreak on your sleep: from giving you backaches to causing you to wake up in a hot, sweaty mess, your mattress can make you uncomfortable. These elements can affect your nighttime experience, whether you’re asleep or indulging in some late-night recreation.

But the other side is what you don’t know: the unconscious component. The mattress can be a “third participant” in your sex life. A “dead bed” doesn’t react to your movements, and this lack of bounce can stifle your activity, your motion and your playfulness. You want the bed to participate – as the bed reacts to your movement and transitions to the next with a bounce, it improves your experience. You surely don’t want a mattress that could double as a trampoline, shooting you 10 feet from your bed, but you do want a bed that pushes back and has some playful bounce. And if you don’t have one, it could be hurting your sex life.

"Forty percent of memory-foam bed owners think memory-foam sex is less than ideal."

Consider this article from Barron's that quotes memory-foam bed owners as saying that nearly 40 percent think memory-foam sex is less than ideal. Why in the world would you own a bed that might be comfortable but isn't good for the more intimate moments? Your bed should deliver it all, and hybrid mattresses can! Would you buy a sports car that handled great but was just plain ugly to look at? Of course not!

Getting the right bounce per ounce

Because bounce is so vital, Leggett & Platt developed a Bounce-Per-Ounce app to highlight and celebrate the bounce in your bed. This app measures the bounce your phone absorbs when placed on another object – try putting your phone on an airplane tray table or your car’s dashboard and it will do the same thing. Extreme bouncing isn’t something you seek in flights or commutes, but you do want the bounce when it counts. The BPO score you receive can serve as a factor to help you determine if your bed has the right amount of bounce.

Better yet, the BPO assesses edge-of-bed bounce. People like to use the entire surface of their mattress when they sleep; we’ve all witnessed the spread-eagled sleeper who can make a California king look small. But the edge can come into play in intimate moments as well. A firm edge is important, whether you’re lying, sitting or standing on it -- you want to be able to utilize all angles. A hybrid mattress can help you do that.

How new technology can spice things up

People want intimacy, no matter their stage or age in life. Some events used to be game-changers for people – from carpal-tunnel surgery to hip replacements – but sex doesn’t have to end just because the body has undergone some changes. Why not get your bed to change with you?

Adjustable beds address the ergonomic issues that today’s lifestyles can create. Adjustable beds can put you into a zero-gravity zone, which feels incredible not only on the joints, but also during more adventurous activities. Beyond that, adjustable mattresses create many more options from a position perspective. You can raise the foot of the bed or move the head of the bed; this introduces a whole new world of possibilities. From an intimacy perspective, adjustable beds are the Kama Sutra of the mattress industry – they can give you options that you didn’t have before and even massage you in those moments after the act.

Hybrid mattresses are the way to go

Hybrid mattresses are like a very happy marriage in the mattress industry. Hybrids combine the comfort of memory foam with the coolness of innersprings. Foams and fibers that allow for cooler sleep are important. If you’re actively “heating up the sheets,” you don’t want a heat conductor that makes you so sweaty you have to get up and take a shower. Cool materials, like those used in hybrid mattresses, allow you to enjoy the afterglow.

Terrible sleep -- and a lackluster sex life -- can be improved with a quality mattress. The old-school mattress that seemed like a great idea when you bought it shouldn’t be expected to meet all your needs in life. As your body changes, your activities shift and the desire to “spice things up” may be increasing, you should invest in a mattress that will let you enjoy your two favorite S-words: sleep and sex. It’s hard to argue that there are two activities more essential to your day-to-day happiness.

As we’ve become a tech-savvy society, we’ve begun to utilize online resources for medical research. From determining whether that ache in your side is appendicitis or a pulled muscle to discovering the symptoms of pneumonia, we use the Internet to gather information on what ails us. How to use the internet for your health

As we’ve become a tech-savvy society, we’ve begun to utilize online resources for medical research.

From determining whether that ache in your side is appendicitis or a pulled muscle to discovering the symptoms of pneumonia, we use the Internet to gather information on what ails us. This makes us more informed consumers – in some cases – but not always healthier ones. In order to derive the most benefit from online resources, we need to know how to use them intelligently.

Why online research is an asset

Health care information on the Internet comes in two flavors: there are simple facts that you can search, and there are dynamic lessons that you can learn from engaging in conversations with health care professionals and other patients. Searching for the facts about a disease or symptom can provide awareness and knowledge, but these resources often come with little context and even less feedback. Social interaction allows you to ask questions, focus on nuance and ensure specific understanding.

However, information isn’t the only thing patients are looking for when engaging with others online – they also need support, encouragement and an emotional connection to others who have gone through the journey of diagnosis. The ultimate value of patient communities is that they bring patients and their experiences together to emphasize the human touch at a time when they’re most vulnerably human.

The drawback to self-diagnosing

The drawback to self-diagnosing via online research is that people are just as likely to misdiagnose themselves as they are to hit the bull’s-eye. Medicine itself is far from perfect – it’s called "practice," after all – but the training that a physician undertakes and learns from throughout decades of practice cannot be matched by even the most careful information search. A patient may, in rare instances, develop a surprising level of expertise about symptoms, a disease or a treatment method, but the reality is that self-diagnosis is a sure path to worsening outcomes and prolonged suffering. Rather than expediting your treatment by researching it yourself, you’re likely extending the time you’ll grapple with your symptoms.

Each of us must become empowered in handling our own health, but empowerment is not the same as ignoring the screening, testing and diagnostic options available in medicine. Think of yourself as an investigative reporter: The more questions you ask, the better informed you will be. To that end, your best bet is to think of online research as just one tool in your arsenal.

Search reliable health care sources

Those tools are only as useful as the information they provide, so it’s essential that you distinguish reliable medical sources from less legitimate ones. When researching, keep these tips in mind.

  1. Take note of the type of site that you are searching. For example, a ".gov" suffix means something different from a ".org" or a ".com." This will clue you to on the site’s mission, as there are restrictions on .gov and .edu sites that make them unique.
  2. Try to "triangulate" whenever possible. You should look for two or three different resources that tell the same story.
  3. Look for original sources. Health care sites sometimes present a digest of information or simplified messages, but the empowered learner will keep a critical eye out for where they’re getting their facts.
  4. Look out for reporting that seems too good to be true. If you find a site that focuses only on the miracle benefits of a diet, an exercise routine or a supplement, you should realize you’re only getting half of the story.

The key is empowerment

We’ll all find ourselves playing the role of patient someday. You need to be as informed as possible about what you want and need – and then find a health care team that listens to you so you can form an effective partnership. You can be an expert in your experiences and symptoms, but you must allow the health care team to be the experts in diagnosis and treatment.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t rely upon others for support. We’re just beginning to understand how peer-to-peer online patient communities can influence health care, but there’s little doubt that they have a real impact. Studies of behavior change suggest that social norms and peer feedback are fundamental drivers in both the healthy and unhealthy decisions we make. If we’re open to sharing, we can seek support from those communities that can best help us make smart choices.

Here's how:

  • Find a community with patients like you. Look to disease advocacy groups for a list of websites with disease-specific communities, or visit a site like Parentslike-me.com to see if a group’s already been formed.
  • Surf through sites to see how robust the conversations are. Many people find that their questions have already been asked and answered dozens of times -- verification that they are not alone.
  • Look for engagement and intelligent questions/answers. These details signify that the group will give support, as well as a balanced look at information.
  • Document what you’ve learned. Don’t try to explain what you think you learned to your physician; show her what you read.

Every second, hundreds of people are being cast in the role of patient – a role for which no one rehearses and no one auditions. Becoming empowered in your health information is the best path to regaining control. This is the irony in patient empowerment: We are best positioned to take ownership of our health when we accept the reality that we cannot do it alone.

You’ve likely heard that bacteria, especially in your stomach, can be associated with positive health benefits. That’s right. Bacteria isn’t just a bad thing -- there is “good bacteria,” too. Probiotics are microorganisms or yeast that are thought to improve your health, and can be found in different foods, including fermented foods.

You’ve likely heard that bacteria, especially in your stomach, can be associated with positive health benefits. That’s right. Bacteria isn’t just a bad thing -- there is “good bacteria,” too.

Ponder probiotics

Probiotics are microorganisms that are thought to improve your health and can be found in different foods, including fermented foods.

The good with the bad

The human digestive system contains good and bad bacteria. In digestive terms, you want to create a balance for optimal health.

Probiotics are similar to the organisms that occur naturally in the human digestive tract. Adding probiotics to our diet and tummies is thought to have numerous benefits, including improved intestinal function and help maintaining a strong immune system.

Research is still being conducted on the proven benefits of probiotics, but some say they can help:

  • Reduce fat gain.
  • Reduce the risk of high blood pressure.
  • Help reduce diarrhea from certain infections.
  • Help to relieve constipation.
  • Help provide calcium to people who are lactose intolerant.
  • Help improve overall immunity.

Fermented food fest

There are several types of probiotics that can be found in different foods, with different health benefits. You might be most familiar with yogurt .

Other fermented foods, which are becoming more and more popular, can also contain probiotics, or active bacterial cultures. These foods have high nutritional value and may be a welcome addition to a healthy diet. Check out some of the following types of fermented foods:

  • Miso – Miso soup is made from fermented soy. You can buy miso paste at many grocery stores; it's often found in the Asian food section.
  • Yogurt – One of the most widely known foods that contain healthy bacteria. Look for low-fat options that are also low in sugar, and contain bifidus and acidophilus.
  • Sauerkraut and kimchi – Fermented cabbage -- sauerkraut -- along with the similar, spicy Korean dish kimchi, is loaded with vitamins that can help boost the immune system. Keep in mind, however, that the pasteurization process kills active, beneficial bacteria.
  • Kombucha – This type of fermented tea has fans and foes alike, but many people swear by this fizzy tea for its health benefits.
  • Kefir – This fermented milk product is becoming more common and can even be found in smoothies and ice creams. Thick and creamy, it tastes like tangy yogurt.

Probiotics also come as supplements, but you should check with your health care provider before deciding whether to take supplements or to make a change in your diet. People with compromised or damaged immune systems should avoid using probiotics or speak to their health care providers about it.

If you’d like to add fermented foods to your meals as part of a healthy diet, consider the following recipe.

Miso-marinated grilled tilapia

This dish is simple to put together, but is tasty and nutritious. Serve with steamed or grilled vegetables and a side of brown rice for a complete meal.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 filets of tilapia or other firm white fish
  • 3/4 cup white miso
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
  • 1/2 cup dry sherry or white wine
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together. Add the filets to the bowl and coat well.
  2. Cover and marinate the fish for about an hour in the refrigerator.
  3. Grill the fish over medium-to-medium-high heat. Cook for about 3-5 minutes per side, more if your fish is extra thick.
  4. Serve with steamed vegetables and brown rice.

Anti-aging doesn’t come with a quick fix, so it’s important to consider your lifestyle today!

Expert advice

Maybe you have a healthy diet down, but do you take water for granted? It’s equally important in your diet to maintain good health, and it can also play a part in the anti-aging process. Good news, right?

SheKnows had the opportunity to check in with Bonnie Taub-Dix, MA, RD, CDN. Taub-Dix is an award-winning dietitian, media personality and author of Read it Before You Eat It. She understands the importance of proper hydration, and has recently teamed with Nestlé Pure Life and its Hydration Movement to encourage Americans to focus on hydration by swapping one sugary drink a day for water.

SheKnows: Do you think people spend more time focusing on how to correct anti-aging issues like wrinkles, skin damage and their health in general than they do preventing them?

Bonnie Taub-Dix: People spend hundreds of dollars on anti-aging creams and potions that go outside of their bodies, but they don’t realize how the skin can be influenced by the foods and beverages we put inside our bodies.

Start early by paying attention to your diet needs so that we can prevent problems as opposed to trying to correct them.

SheKnows: Are there shortcuts to anti-aging ?

Taub-Dix: Ah, don’t we all want shortcuts to good health? There are products on the market promising to control bags and sags all over the body, but what you put in is what you’re going to get out. A diet that has plenty of water and watery foods, like colorful fruits and veggies, will work wonders for healthy skin and potentially add years to your life.

SheKnows: How can people be more proactive in combatting the effects of aging?

Taub-Dix: Don’t underestimate the power that sleep, exercise and a nutrient-rich diet have on longevity and the way you look. These healthy habits are not difficult to follow if you make them habits instead of chores. It’s also more likely that we surround ourselves with people who are like us, so choose your friends wisely -- they may determine what your habits will be like.

It’s also essential that you protect yourself with sunscreen every day. Sun damage is a direct route to looking older and more wrinkled. Eating well and keeping hydrated will help keep your eyes and skin clear. It might also be best to reduce alcohol intake. Smoking is another factor in aging.

SheKnows: What types of foods are the best to keep us healthy on the inside and out?

Taub-Dix: What you consume on a daily basis has a major impact on how well your skin regenerates itself. Foods that are low in nutrients, such as refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats, don't have what your body needs to develop and maintain a healthy glow.

Choose foods that are close as possible to their natural state, prepared with minimal processing. Consider these vitamins and minerals to help with aging skin:

  • Beta-carotene: An antioxidant. It helps increases cellular regeneration, and prevents premature aging of the skin. Food sources: carrots, apricots and squash.
  • Vitamin C: An antioxidant. It’s needed for production of elastin and collagen. It promotes skin strength and elasticity in blood vessel walls and cell membranes. Food sources: oranges, strawberries, kiwi fruit and peppers.
  • Vitamin E: An antioxidant. It helps maintain all tissues and is believed to slow the aging of cells; it may help prevent scar formation. Food sources: cold-pressed vegetable oils, raw nuts and seeds.
  • Selenium: An antioxidant. It protects against UV-induced cell damage and helps preserve skin elasticity. Food sources: tuna, garlic, onions and broccoli
  • Zinc: An antioxidant. It’s essential for normal cell growth and repair. Food sources: whole grains, most seafood and onions.
  • Essential fatty acids: They help to maintain proper function of all tissues and tissue repair, especially the skin. Food sources: Fatty fish , primrose oil, flaxseed oil and olive oil.

Other important nutrients include fiber-rich foods like whole grains. Be sure to drink plenty of water when consuming fiber to help digested nutrients move through and out of your system. Fiber alone could end up of making you feel constipated and bloated.

Maintaining a healthy weight is also crucial for living a long healthy life. Consume portions in moderation. Your body can only process so many nutrients at once. When you eat your meals, try to incorporate foods that are going to offer you a greater nutritional value in each bite and try to cut back on those that increase your risk of disease . Eating healthfully will not only help you to look wonderful, but you’ll also feel great too.

SheKnows: We know that drinking water is important for so many reasons. How do you encourage people to drink more water?

Taub-Dix: I tell my clients to try to drink water at room temperature. There’s a tendency to drink more when it’s not too hot or too cold. Adding a splash of 100 percent fruit juice or a few mint leaves can jazz up your water. During the warm months, I like to keep a pitcher of water in the fridge with fruit cut up in it.

Another simple and actionable way to help train yourself to hydrate healthfully is by making a swap and switch. For extra motivation, join the Nestle Pure Life Hydration Movement and pledge to swap one sugared beverage a day for water.

SheKnows: Are water-based beverages like iced tea or lemonade OK to work into your diet as a substitution for water? What about sparkling water? Does that count as plain water?

"For each cup of a caffeinated beverage, you should drink a cup of water."

Bonnie Taub-Dix: A bottle of iced tea is not equivalent to a bottle of water. Caffeine acts as a diuretic, causing you to actually lose water. The same applies to coffee and alcohol. For each cup of a caffeinated beverage, you should drink a cup of water.

The calories in sweetened lemonade could add up quickly. Lemonade has somewhat of a health halo as compared to soda, yet can be equivalent in calories. Swapping water for one sugared beverage a day is a great way to ensure you’re hydrating healthfully.

Sparkling water is equivalent to drinking still water .

Nestle Pure Life suggests having "8 before 8" -- 8 ounces of water before 8 a.m. so that you start your day with a beverage your body can’t live without!

The aging process won’t stop, but you can help slow it down!
