Hate Ariana Grande's hairstyle? Here's how she's spiced it up

Ariana Grande explains fan meet-and-greet gone wrong >>

From the red carpet to the stage, the "Fancy" singer always seems to be rocking the same 'do: her signature piled-high pony.

Ever wondered why Ariana is a one-look girl? Her hairstylist, Dalina Rebollo, explained to Herbal Essences what inspired the style.

Iggy Azalea initially said no to Ariana Grande collab >>

"It's a club scene, sexy and edgy. She's a true performer, not letting anything get in her way — not even her hair," Dalina explained. "So we always pull it away from her face, but we will still have it down and sexy with a hint of innocence."

Dalina went on to explain that Ariana's oft-rocked half-up, half-down pony is an evolving style.

"It's her signature look. It's a high ponytail with a flip underneath. We're kind of going away from the curls now. She's evolved into a sexy, more respected pop star. So she has her signature look, but it's more wild, more fun."

State investigates clinic that treated Joan Rivers

7 Steps to becoming an iconic comedian: The Joan Rivers legacy >>

Rivers died Thursday at age 81 after complications during throat surgery. She was at Yorkville Endoscopy, an outpatient clinic, and reportedly stopped breathing during a procedure involving her vocal cords. She was put on life support at Mount Sinai Hospital and news outlets reported later that she was in a medically induced coma.

CBS reports that New York State Department of Health officials declined to provide details on the ongoing investigation, but did say that investigators had visited the facility.

In an email, a spokesperson told CBS that they were looking into "document and medical record reviews, observation, and interviews with facility staff, physicians and others as appropriate."

5 Things Joan Rivers wanted you to know about gay rights and suicide >>

Dr. Tara Narula, a cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital, told CBS that outpatient procedures in clinics like the one Rivers was in are generally very safe.

"Generally, surgical outpatient procedures carry a very low risk," she said. "What it's important for people to know is that when you have a cardiac arrest, your risk of surviving that is very low. If you have a cardiac arrest in the hospital, there's only a 25 percent chance of surviving."

Heart or lung complications are rare in those kinds of surgeries — they usually cause about one death out of every 10,000 patients. In New York, any center providing surgery, outpatient or otherwise, is required to have a defibrillator on hand, as well as keep staff trained in resuscitation.

The investigation has not yet revealed whether the clinic where Rivers had her surgery met those standards. A spokesperson for the New York Department of Health said the lengths of these types of investigations vary on a case by case basis.

Make your savory cupcake dreams come true with these takes on cheesy lasagna and quinoa enchiladas

It all starts with some wonton wrappers and a cupcake pan. The rest of the ingredients that go into these cupcakes are pretty typical lasagna ingredients. This version is for the meat lover, but you could always make them vegetarian by doubling the cheesy ingredients.

Cheesy lasagna cupcakes

Start off by browning the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the meat is browned, drain out any fat, and add in some red pasta sauce. I love a garlic-flavored pasta sauce, but any kind will work, so pick your favorite.

Cheesy lasagna cupcakes

Next, it's time to make the cheese mixture that will go into these cupcakes. The mixture consists of a container of ricotta cheese, some Parmesan, a large egg, some Italian seasoning and some minced garlic.

Mix all the ingredients together really well, and then set them aside. Now it's time to put together the lasagna cupcakes.

Cheesy lasagna cupcakes

To make these cupcakes, you will need to spray your cupcake pan well with a nonstick cooking spray. Then place 1 wonton wrapper into the cupcake pan, and press it down to cover all the edges.

Next, scoop 1 spoonful of the cheese mixture into the wonton wrapper. On top of that goes 1 scoop of the meat-and-pasta-sauce mixture.

Cheesy lasagna cupcakes

On top of the meat, sprinkle a mixture of Parmesan and mozzarella cheese. That's it. These are ready to go into the oven. How easy was that?

They bake for about 18 to 20 minutes or until the edges are crispy and brown. Remove the cupcakes from the oven, and using a spoon, ease them out onto a plate. These are best eaten right out of the oven, so eat up.

Cheesy lasagna cupcakes recipe

Serves 12

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 48 wonton wrappers
  • 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese
  • 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese, separated
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 (16 ounce) can pasta sauce
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese
  • Basil, for garnish (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a cupcake pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Brown the beef, and season with salt and pepper. Stir in 1 cup of pasta sauce.
  3. Mix together the ricotta cheese, 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese, the egg, garlic and Italian seasoning.
  4. Layer your lasagna cupcakes. Begin with the wonton wrappers, pressing them into the bottoms of the cupcake cavities. Place a large spoonful of the cheese mixture into each wonton wrapper.
  5. Place 1 more wonton wrapper on top, and then top with a spoonful of the meat-and-pasta-sauce mixture.
  6. Top with the remaining Parmesan and mozzarella cheese.
  7. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until the edges are brown. Remove the cupcakes from oven, and let them cool for 5 minutes. To remove them from the pan, use a knife to loosen the edges, and then pop out each lasagna cupcake.
  8. Garnish with basil if desired, and serve immediately.
Here's another fun recipe for a delicious vegetarian quinoa dinner cupcake. If you are a quinoa fan, I'm sure you'll love this recipe. The method is the same as the instructions above, but with different ingredients.

  • 1/2 cup chopped bell peppers
  • 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese
  • Basil, for garnish (optional)

  2. Stir the cooked quinoa together with the corn, black beans, enchilada sauce and bell peppers.
  3. Layer your quinoa cupcakes. Begin with the wonton wrappers, pressing them into the bottoms of the cupcake cavities. Place a large spoonful of the quinoa mixture into each wonton wrapper.

Battle of the mouses: Deadmau5 claims Disney stole his art first

Disney takes legal action against Deadmau5's trademark ears >>

While dealing with the lawsuit filed by Disney, the DJ took to Twitter to talk about what he sees as Disney’s skirting of the infringement line and his "cease and desist."

DeadMau 5 files counter suit against Disney

DeadMau 5 files counter suit against Disney

Deadmau5 linked to a video on the Disney website called "Ghosts 'n' Stuff Re-Micks." The clip on the website says, "Enjoy a spooky cartoon Re-Micks to the tune of Deadmau5's 'Ghosts 'n' Stuff.’”

Deadmau5's Twitter rant is not new for the DJ; he even proposed to ex-fiancée Kat Von D via Twitter as well.

He also tweeted photos of the cease and desist letter that he has sent to Disney along with the caption, "Have a magical f***ing day.”

"Accordingly, not only is Disney violating the rights of Zimmerman [Deadmau5's real last name], but it is also infringing upon the rights of EMI Music Publishing Limited, Virgin Records Limited and Ultra Records, LLC," the complaint read. "Disney prominently features the Deadmau5 mark next to the infringing video, implying a non-existent endorsement by Zimmerman."

Deadmau5 on split with Kat Von D: I was not unfaithful >>

Disney filed a lawsuit against the DJ earlier this week for the use of his “mau5head” logo that he uses in his shows and artwork.

"Our client will not be bullied by Disney and is prepared to fight to protect his rights to his property," Deadmau5's lawyer said in a statement to Rolling Stone.

Disney responded to Rolling Stone on Friday, Sept. 5., saying, "Disney vigorously protects its trademark rights, and we oppose Mr. Zimmerman’s attempt to register a logo that is nearly identical to our trademarks for his commercial exploitation. Our opposition is not about the use of the Deadmau5 costume. The music was appropriately licensed, and there is no merit to his statement."

That time I got dissed for taking my kids to a restaurant

$

And by "spontaneous" of course, I mean hit-up-the-closest-and-quietest restaurant for pizza. Because nothing says Saturday night like cheap pizza and broken crayons for the kids.

But as it would so happen, even our grand plans to go out without any type of a bang don't always go over so well.

One night in particular, my family rounded the corner into the restaurant dining room — my nine-month pregnant belly in the lead and my three young children (ages 6, 4 and 2) trailing behind me like a pack of hungry ducklings. Without hesitation, the hostess slapped some menus on a round table directly next to the only other customers in the restaurant. Warily, the diners eyed me up, glancing behind me and involuntarily gripping their bread sticks a little tighter.

"Um, would it be OK if we sat over there?" I asked the hostess, gesturing towards any of the other tables in the wide-open restaurant. "I'd hate to disturb these nice people," I explained, flashing a smile their way to show them that I was a considerate mother.

The customer sat up straighter and dabbed her napkin delicately to her lips with disdain. She nodded vigorously, dismissing us with a wave of her hand. "Yes, I think that would be a fine idea," she said scornfully.

Gritting my teeth, I kept a smile plastered on my face as I waddled with as much dignity as I could muster towards our new table. "Did you hear that?" I hissed to my husband. "How dare she!"

He sighed the tired sigh of fathers-of-many everywhere, pulling out a menu for our 2-year-old while simultaneously opening a straw for the 4-year-old. "Yeah, I know," he said ruefully. "But I get it. I wouldn't want to pay money and have an environment of screaming kids."

And because my husband happens to be one of the nicest people ever, I conceded to his point. But I am not the nicest person ever, especially at nine months pregnant, and the judgment we face every day out in public simply because my children are young and somewhat plentiful is ridiculous.

Here's the thing: I do understand not wanting a meal ruined by out-of-control toddlers, screaming babies or tantrums over chicken nuggets. But here's the other thing: Not every meal with kids goes that way and, more importantly, parents taking their children out for a meal aren't exactly looking for that type of dining experience either.

Parents of young children take their family out for a meal for the same reasons as everyone else — because we're hungry, because it's a fun night out or because (gasp), we're trying to teach our children good behavior. We're obviously not taking them to restaurants with crystal-and-china-laden tables and if a child does happen to act up, you can bet your apparently-superior dollar that the guilty party will be appropriately dealt with.

So the next time you want to judge a family with young children in a restaurant, do me a favor.

Give them a chance before you assume that they are going to ruin your entire dinner. Or better yet, send them an appetizer. I can almost guarantee you that food plus toddlers is an excellent way to ensure a moment of silence.

I have been harvesting fresh figs from our tree every day, and I've made almost all the recipes I can think of to use them up. This dessert came out so good (and beautiful too!) that you won't believe it's actually very easy to make.

Fig tartlets with custard cream and pistachios recipe

Custard cream might sound intimidating, but it's easy to make using what you probably already have in the pantry. So when you want something a little different for your sweet tooth (and also to impress the family), take out this recipe, and start cooking. You will love these easy and delicious tartlets.

Fig tartlets with custard cream and pistachios recipe

Yields 7

Ingredients:

  • 1 store-bought puff pastry
  • 1 cup custard cream (see recipe below)
  • 7 untreated fresh figs, quartered
  • 7 teaspoons ground pistachios
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Fresh mint, for garnish (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Using a round food shaper or the mouth of a drinking glass, cut the puff pastry into 7 (or more) circular shapes.
  3. Place the round puff pastries onto a baking pan lined with parchment paper.
  4. Spoon some custard cream into the centers of the puff pastries, leaving the edges empty.
  5. On top of the custard cream, place 4 fig wedges, and then sprinkle on 1 teaspoon of pistachios.
  6. In a small bowl, lightly whisk the egg yolk to serve as the egg wash. Brush the egg wash all around the edges of the puff pastries.
  7. Bake the tartlets on the middle rack for 15 minutes.
  8. When the tartlets are ready to be served, garnish them with fresh mint, if using.

Custard cream recipe

Yields 1 cup

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 vanilla pod
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/3 cup sugar

Directions:

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the sugar and egg yolks until creamy. Add the flour little by little while still whisking. Set aside.
  2. With a sharp knife, slice the vanilla pod vertically down the center. Using the tip of the knife, scrape out the seeds.
  3. In another small saucepan over low heat, warm up the milk and vanilla seeds until almost boiling. Turn off the heat.
  4. Over low heat, whisk the sugar-and-egg mixture while gradually pouring in the hot milk.
  5. When you have used up all the milk and the custard cream has reached a creamy consistency, turn off the heat.

Eye-opening study shows women receive harsher performance reviews

$
0
0

Abrasive. Bitchy. Irrational. Bossy. Strident. These are common adjectives used in the workplace to describe women who lead groups or speak their mind. Men? They get described in much less loaded and personal terms like "impatient" or "assertive."

This isn't just an anecdotal tale of workplace inequality. A new report for Fortune Magazine shows in quantifiable terms that women are much more likely to get criticized at work. And more often than not, the criticism is personal, rather than constructive feedback on how to improve performance.

It's what researcher Kieran Snyder calls "negative feedback" in performance reviews, which attack personal traits like how aggressive an employee is perceived to be. Men are more likely to get what Snyder calls "constructive feedback" like being told to slow down and focus on details to improve performance. In simpler terms, men more often get feedback on their job performance rather than on how the act of the performance made others feel. Men are told how to improve and grow professionally. Women are told to be quiet.

Snyder conducted the research by asking her colleagues in tech — both men and women — to submit their performance reviews so she could look for patterns. She looked at 248 reviews in all from 180 different tech professionals which included 105 men and 75 women from various companies of all sizes.

Of the reviews Snyder looked at, only two men received negative feedback, compared with the 82 men who only received constructive feedback. Women, on the other hand, overwhelmingly received negative feedback rather than constructive. Of the women reviewed, 71 received negative feedback, while only 23 received only constructive feedback.

Also interestingly, there was no difference in the kind or quantity of criticism if the supervisor doing the evaluation was male or female. Telling women about their faults seems to be natural no matter what your gender.

For women trying to earn a living this is hardly earth-shattering social science. Heck, I'm only one woman, and I've been called strident, aggressive, told I was a bitch, and was asked if I worked as an exotic dancer in the evenings. All comments from male supervisors. And those are the only ones I can remember.

As a society, it's no secret we are really hard on women and girls. We beat ourselves up. We show little mercy to other women. No wonder everyone else picks up on our cues and feels entitled to tell us all the stuff we could be doing better.

There's also the issue that women in public spaces are viewed as the property of others. It's why men feel free to hoot, catcall and say all kinds of awful stuff to women who simply have the misfortune of stepping in their path. Women aren't people to be treated with respect in their minds, they're just objects that are transferred from one man's ownership to the next.

And this isn't just a men's issue. If it was, the women supervisors in the Fortune study would have shown more fairness and objectivity. They didn't.

"As a woman in tech who has been called all of these things before, there is some validation in confirming with data that the pattern is real," Snyder says. "But as a leader in tech, I'm aghast at how closely under our noses we let this live."

So the next time you are on the receiving end of a review that veers too far off into personality attack, try asking questions to get a clearer view of where the criticism is coming from. If you happen to be just too outspoken for the taste of one supervisor, there is little you're going to be able to do long-term to change that. But developing a thick skin and reasoning with people who might not be altogether reasonable is always the best place to start.

The architect of this design, Weil Arets, named this project the Jellyfish House, and noting that it's lacking trailing tentacles, it's safe to assume it's due to the fact that it's built with a glass-bottom pool. Located in Marbella, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, this pool overlooks an outdoor terrace and also has a glass side to sneak a peek into the kitchen and living room. Although inside a private home, one may want to avoid skinny dipping when guests are around. Or swimming at all, if you have even the faintest fear of heights.

Find true motivation to reach new heights in your fitness when swimming in a pool that is directly above the gym. Suspended on the fourth floor, the Einstein Fitness Park inside of Hotel Einstein in St. Gallen, Switzerland, overlooks the stairway, but provides visibility to the workout equipment. In addition, the glass roof makes you almost forget that you're standing above an acrylic-bottomed pool.

This hotel proves that the Swedes love a thrill. The Avalon Hotel in Gothenburg has a roof terrace equipped with a pool that's gorgeous on the inside and out. Advertising that the water "floats freely" over Kungsportsplatsen, guests will have views of not only the street through the glass bottom, but also the horizon through the glass side. And to help you feel more relaxed, they've decked the pool out with mosaic pieces and 24-karat gold. Perhaps you can focus on the lavish beauty of the interior rather than the fact that you're practically hanging from the rooftop.

Tortoise chases toy truck

Tortoise chases toy truck

When a toy truck drives by, he doesn't just take a mild interest, he full-on sprints after it. If you ever wondered what a running tortoise might look like, take a long gander, my friends. This speedy terrapin is the picture of agility as he zooms after the remote-controlled truck.

The timing is interesting, too. After all, the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie did just hit theaters. Don't you think this fleet-footed fellow would make a nice addition to Splinter's gang of crime-fighting terrapins?

At the very least, he's earned a slice of pizza.

According to the ALS Association, the Ice Bucket Challenge has raked in more than $100 million in global donations. This fundraising is outstanding compared to the $2.8 million raised for ALS in the same time frame last year. If you've donated or participated, then you deserve a pat on the back.

But some argue that you can have too much of a good thing. Ice Bucket Challenge videos have flooded social media. Everyone and their mom, including celebrities, are doing it. It was only a matter of time before people got sick of the challenge and tried to put their own spin on it.

1. Dirt Bucket Challenge

What are Californians experiencing the state's worst drought in almost 20 years to do? The answer is simple: Conserve water, and raise awareness for ALS in one fell swoop with the #DirtBucketChallenge. California Dirt Bucket challengers requested donations for ALS and Canine Companions for Independence.

2. Horse Urine Challenge

The awesomeness of the Ice Bucket Challenge has spread to China. Environmentally conscious DJ Yang Yue dumped a bucket of freezing horse urine on his head to conserve water and promote the China-Dolls Center for Rare Disorders charity.

3. Rice Bucket Challenge

Indian journalist Maju Latha Kalanidhi created a #RiceBucketChallenge spinoff to donate buckets of rice to those in need, raising awareness for the alarming hunger crisis in India.

4. Rubble Bucket Challenge

Journalist Ayman al Aloul introduced the Rubble Bucket Challenge to rally support for Palestinians living amid the destruction in Gaza. U.S. #RubbleBucketChallenge participants have raised awareness by taking the challenge in front of the White House.

5. Pie-in-the-face Challenge

Father Randy Nester created the Pie-in-the-face Challenge to support his charity, Bennett's Bears, in honor of his 4-year-old son, Bennett, who has cancer. Each pie in the face aims to "Whip Childhood Cancer" with a $46 donation to a children's cancer charity, along with a public challenge to new participants.

6. Toilet Water Challenge

Matt Damon is everyone's favorite celeb activist and cofounder of Water.org. After being challenged by Ben Affleck and Jimmy Kimmel, Matt dumped icy toilet water on his head to raise awareness for both ALS and the clean water crisis in the developing world.

Is True Detective Season 2 Elisabeth Moss' post-Mad Men move?

Director Justin Lin is in discussion to helm several episodes for the second season of the Emmy-nominated drama. Cary Fukunaga's vision guided every episode of the first year of True Detective; however, Lin would only sign on for a few, which leaves room for another player to have some creative input on this year's look.

Colin Farrell on True Detective? The Season 2 rumors heat up >>

We're most familiar with Lin from his work in the Fast and the Furious franchise, where he's directed every installment since the third movie, Tokyo Drift. He's also attached to helm the next movie in the Jason Bourne franchise now that Jeremy Renner has taken over the title role from Matt Damon, but he's no stranger to television. There are several quality episodes of Community under Lin's belt, including the wildly popular Season 1 finale "Modern Warfare."

Is Jessica Chastain going to be on True Detective? >>

Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Colin Farrell are also all still in talks to take on roles this year, and though we've expressed disappointment that there won't be more diversity this year, we're cheered by the other piece of news coming out of True Detective speculation: At least one of the lead roles this season will be played by a woman.

While no official information has been released about casting just yet, rumor has it that the two candidates being most closely considered right now are Rachel McAdams and Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss. It'd be an interesting career move for McAdams, who's generally tended to stick to lighter romantic drama or comedy fare, but it'd be a great opportunity for her to demonstrate that she can also go dark and gritty. With Mad Men about to wrap up its run, though, and after a stellar turn in the dark series Top of the Lake, we're not ready to count Moss out of the running just yet.

Women pioneered these male-dominant careers, yet they get zero credit

$

The Huffington Post uncovered surprising findings in several competitively male careers: Women did it first. Though a woman's place in the workforce seems equal today — estimated at roughly 50 percent — there are still evident imbalances in multiple male-dominated industries.

Much of this has to do with gender stereotypes. Gender stereotyping can be subtle and automatic. Women at the receiving end of these stereotypes — women who were raised as little girls to believe in "woman's work" and "man's work" — may be less likely to pursue a stereotypically male career like computer programming.

Yet the first-ever computer programmer was a woman. Today, it's a sad fact that women make up less than 25 percent of the national technology, engineering, science and math workforce. Again, we have gender stereotyping to thank, and the rampant sexism in the video game industry doesn't help.

We need more women in computer programming. This shift in the balance is important not only to blast unnecessary stereotypes and uphold women's rights but to boost the economy by providing women with better job opportunities. The tech industry is only going to continue to grow. Women need a piece of this pie — and the support and resources to go after tech-friendly careers.

The medical field is another traditionally male industry spurred on by women. Millennia ago, as far back as ancient Egypt, women were the medical experts in town. Nuns in early European history made important medical breakthroughs related to child-birthing and gynecology.

The medical workforce is still male-dominant today, though the number of female doctors is growing. What caused this change? Women were considered medical pioneers centuries ago, until doctors were required to receive university education to practice medicine in the Middle Ages. Women were not allowed to attend university, and the problems began.

If history provides us with any clues, women are just as capable as men of dominating both of these career paths. But instead of domination, how about basic equality? Gender stereotyping is one major issue, and gender pay gap is another. Within the Medicare system, female doctors still only make half as much as their male colleagues.

Assembly lines aren't only helpful in a factory. They're also a great way to give each member of the family their own dinner duty. To make this breaded chicken recipe, one helper can handle flour dredging, another can dip the cutlets in egg wash and a third can coat the pieces with the quinoa mixture.

Quesadillas

Chicken quesadillas

Quesadillas are the perfect choice for those busy weeknights when you need to get dinner on the table now. The kids can chop up toppings, smash up avocados for guacamole and customize their quesadillas just the way they like them.
