Pitbull is officially a college boy, and a hilarious one at that. The rapper received an honorary degree from Miami's Doral College on Tuesday, and took a graduation picture only Pitbull could pull off.

PHOTO: Emma Watson graduates from Brown University >>

On Wednesday, he tweeted a photo of himself in his graduation gown, but was flipping off the camera (and smiling the whole time).

The college honored the Miami native with the degree because of his longtime support for education. Pitbull gave a speech during the ceremony, sharing his passion for equal education for everyone.

"I remember being kicked out of a public school because I didn't have the right address," Pitbull said, according to E! News. "That's why I want better schools for the kids who live where I grew up. That's why Doral Academy was founded, and that's why I helped create SLAM [Sports Leadership and Management] in the neighborhood where I grew up — a school that offers a choice for students, like me, students who need someone to inspire them, someone to believe in them."

JLo snubs Pitbull: The Billboard moment no one is talking about >>

Pitbull just returned from Brazil, where he performed at the opening ceremonies of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, along with Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte. JLo and Pitbull have worked together many times before, but there is no word on if she showed up to his graduation.

Fire up the grill: Pink slime burgers are back

Pink slime

Just in time for grilling season — pink slime meat is making a comeback.

Back in 2012, there was widespread panic when YouTube and news stations played footage of the meat byproduct being produced. Consumers demanded it be gone and within just months of the story airing, sales were down 80 percent, several factories were closed and thousands of employees lost their jobs. Several major grocery chains refused to carry anything containing the stuff.

But the panic was overblown, says the meat industry. According to Cargill, one of the largest manufacturers of lean finely textured beef (what it's really called), "pink slime" is 100 percent lean beef trimmings treated with citric acid to kill bacteria. It's the citric acid — a natural acid found in many fruits like lemons and oranges — that gives the stuff its characteristic nauseating pink shade.

Meat producers maintain that the trimmings were held to the same USDA standards as the rest of the beef and that citric acid is a natural preservative used in everything from yogurt to candy to organic granola bars. While it might have been unappetizing, food producers say it was never unsafe and the public was never in any danger. Indeed, one manufacturer filed a defamation suit against ABC News saying that it maliciously and willfully misled the public about the safety of it.

Which might be good news considering that rising food prices have been yet another casualty of the recession. Have you bought meat lately? Did you nearly pass out from sticker shock too? Beef prices alone have doubled in the past four years with no end to the increase in sight.

So suddenly lean finely textured beef isn't looking so bad anymore. I mean, hey, that almost sounds gourmet right? It's lean. It's textured. It's... still pink slime. But once it's cooked it all looks brown, right? With six mouths to feed, including three pre-teen boys who eat like grown men (but still throw tantrums like children), I may have to get over that lingering visual image reminiscent of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. And I'm not the only one rethinking the food budget as Cargill says sales of the beef byproduct are rising quickly.

However, if you still want to stay on the safe side, experts say it's easy to avoid. Stay away from processed foods containing meat like pasta sauce, lasagna and pre-made hamburgers. You can also purchase cuts of beef from a butcher and ask them to grind them into ground beef while you wait.

What's your take on pink slime? Do you avoid it? Don't care? Become a vegetarian?

5 Shady things people do when looking for a job

$

Woman with fingers crossed behind back

While the thought of lying about work experience or education on my résumé has never even crossed my mind, for many, that’s what they feel is necessary in order to get the job. The most-common résumé lies, composed by Marquet International, include stretching work dates, inflating accomplishments and skills, enhancing job titles and exaggerating education background. Though some of these aren’t outright lies, it’s never a good idea to stretch the truth, either. This got us thinking. What other shady things are people doing when looking for a job?

1. Fill in gaps on a résumé

"As a recruitment agency, we receive updates to CVs over time. A few years ago, we had the CV of a contractor who had only worked about three years of a five-year period due to gaps between a lot of short contracts. About two years later, we received an updated CV from him but now all the gaps had disappeared, so it gave the impression that he had the full five years’ experience during that five-year period. We assumed that later gaps had also been glossed over. We replied to him saying that we could not help him due to this deceit." – Bernard Morgan, Computer Recruiter

2. Completely fabricate a résumé

"In my previous company, we had a guy submit a résumé that was really impressive: great companies, perfect roles within each company. We brought him in for an interview, and something just didn't feel right to his hiring manager, who was the person who interviewed him. He decided to check up on his references, but the following day, before he could start calling around, the guy submitted his résumé again... this time, completely different résumé! Apparently he hadn't realized that our job listing was for the same thing he had just interviewed for, and applied a second time... again, with a brand new résumé that totally conflicted with his previous one. We checked up with some of the companies, and he had never worked at most of the places on his résumé... it was all a work of fiction!" – Anonymous

3. Get references to lie for you

Larry Stybel, co-founder of a career management development firm based in Boston, interviewed a VP candidate who gave him three people to speak with as part of reference checks. "We were seeking someone who really 'listens' to subordinates, customers and colleagues. And all three references spoke glowingly about how great he was as a listener. One even said that his greatest problem was not speaking up more to assert himself," he states.

"None could give me specific stories to illustrate how he listens and is willing to change his mind based on what he hears. I then went to the next level of people... people who know him, whose names he had not given to me. And I found out that this person is a great talker but a terrible listener," Larry says.

"He wasted my time, didn't get the job and would have been quickly fired had he gotten the job," he concludes.

Lesson learned: Take references with a grain of salt. Ask for specific stories.

4. Lie about your image — literally

"A friend of mine actually attached a photo-shopped portrait picture of himself that he included at the end of every résumé submission. He felt that while changing his image was a bit shady, with the chances of getting caught pretty high, he felt he could better his chances of getting a highly successful position within a company through this means of persuasion. With a market saturated with the unemployed, people will do whatever it takes to beat the odds." – Andrew

5. Use a diploma mill

A nationwide pre-employment screening firm based in California, Employers Investigative Services, processes thousands of searches a day and deals with employment and education verifications. Some applicants will utilize "diploma mills." These are false, for-profit companies that will sell you a diploma/degree and tell verification companies that you graduated. The company does its best to find the discrepancies and report them to its clients.

So, there you have it, five ways people are dishonest when looking for a job. Though the job market is tough right now, lying is never going to get you to where you want to be.

Spelling is starring alongside her old Beverly Hills 90210 alum Jennie Garth in the new ABC Family comedy Mystery Girls. The show centers on former friends Charlie Contour (Garth), a suburban housewife and mother, and Holly Hamilton (Spelling), an actress who longs for the good old days when she was starring with Charlie in a '90s show called (you guessed it) Mystery Girls. Both of the girls find their lives disrupted when Mystery Girls mega-fan Nick (Miguel Pinzon) witnesses a crime and will only speak to his TV heroes, forcing the ladies to reunite and put their TV crime-solving skills to the test.

Personal drama aside, if you follow Spelling on Twitter or have checked out her websites and books, then you know she's all about promoting family and fun. From the previews, it looks like this new series falls right into her wheelhouse.

Will the new series help Spelling move on after all the emotional trauma she's suffered recently? Only time will tell, but it looks like it's off to a good start.

Jack Antonoff is ready for babies. The fun. guitarist just hit 30, and can hear his biological clock ticking. He opened up to New York Magazine about his hope for children, and how his girlfriend Lena Dunham might figure into that.

#YesAllWomen: 7 Celebs who support it on Twitter >>

The couple has been dating since 2012 — the result of a blind date set up by comedian Mike Birbiglia. Antonoff said he knew right away that Dunham was a match for him.

"I told Lena everything about my whole life, because when you really like someone, you want them to know everything about you," he said.

The musician, whose high school sweetheart was Scarlett Johansson, admitted that he and Dunham have talked about marriage, but knows they are far off from actually tying the knot. He explained, "I think all people in relationships that last longer than a year start talking about that stuff. It's hard to imagine when the right time is because things are so crazy at the moment."

That craziness includes not only Dunham's show Girls, but also Antonoff's band fun. as well as his new project Bleachers. The couple have never hidden their relationship, and often post photos of their adventures on Instagram.

But Antonoff did admit he is "desperate" to have kids, and knows his age has a lot to do with it.

"I think it's biological," he explained. "I'm 30. I'm not that young, right? I'm not, like, 24 or 22. I'm no longer in the phase of my life where I talk about everything as in the future. Like, I'm in the future."

Lena Dunham shares her disappointment in not being gay >>

Antonoff seems very much in awe of his girlfriend, and also admitted that he hopes it's Dunham who helps him with his new goal.

"It just seems like the most fun thing in the world," he said. "I've never met people who have kids who haven't looked me in the eye and been like, 'It's the greatest thing that's ever happened.'"

A third-time pregnant Kourtney Kardashian has become fed up with husband Scott Disick's partying and told him he'd best start being a better dad or else.

The notorious reality father has been going back to his hard-partying ways and his wife is getting tired of it. Kardashian apparently told Disick he'd better clean up his act or be on his way, Us Weekly reported.

Kris Jenner dishes on Kourtney's pregnancy — sort of >>

While at the family's Hamptons summer rental, Disick has been reportedly going out drinking a lot and not spending time with the couple's two kids. With a third child on the way, Kardashian told Disick he needs to shape up. In fact, during one of his party nights, the eldest Kardashian sister got so upset, she kicked Disick out of the rented luxury estate and told him to go sleep at a hotel.

"Kourtney was yelling at Scott after she found an inappropriate picture of him with another girl," a source in the know told Us.

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick deny relationship troubles >>

Disick recently lost both his parents and he's been dealing with it by going out drinking in New York City while the family hangs at the Hamptons mansion. But he's been taking it too far and Kardashian is mad he's not keeping up with his fatherly duties.

"You need to be a more responsible father and get better," a source said Kardashian yelled while fighting with Disick the night she kicked him out. "There is another baby on the way! You need to straighten up or get out!"

The Kardashian clan has been spending time in the posh Hamptons area while Khloé and Kourtney are shooting their newest reality spinoff, Kourtney & Khloé Take the Hamptons. No word on whether the marital issues between Kardashian and Disick will be documented in the new series, but chances are the whole drama will unfold before everyone's TV screens soon enough.

In the meantime, Kardashian remains worried and hopes having another baby will force Disick back to his senses.

Former actor on The Shield Michael Jace pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in a Los Angeles courtroom. He is accused of killing his wife back in mid-May.

According to CNN, the judge ordered the performer to have no contact with his two children, and he set bond at $2 million.

Michael Jace charged with wife's murder >>

The preliminary hearing will be Aug. 1, when investigators will testify why Jace is accused of murder and present their evidence against him.

April Jace was shot multiple times and the Los Angeles County coroner officially ruled her death as a homicide. The domestic case took place on May 19 at her home in south Los Angeles.

Michael did report the shooting to 911, as did neighbors in the area. According to TMZ, he admitted on the phone, "I shot my wife." A police statement after the event said, "At this moment, the motive of the murder is believed to be domestic violence."

3 Arrested for pelting Taylor Swift's house with beer bottles >>

His two children were home at the time of the incident and were taken into police custody after the shooting. They were placed with California's Department of Children and Family Services.

While there was no domestic violence history between the couple, friends had reported that there were multiple issues with his first wife, including physical abuse. Michael Jace had also dealt with debt and foreclosure after his FX series ended in 2008.

The couple married in June 2003, about a year after Jace divorced his first wife.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony: Finally divorced

It took three years, but the former power couple is finally divorced. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony said goodbye to their seven-year union this week as a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge signed off on the divorce papers.

E! News confirmed that while all matters were settled by the couple in March, the LA court system had a backlog of paperwork. It wasn't entered into the system until this week.

10 Thing we learned from JLo's A.K.A. >>

The duo, who married in June 2004, announced their split in July 2011. At the time they said, "This was a very difficult decision. We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters."

They had twins, Max and Emme, 6, during their union.

It was JLo's third marriage after being married to Ojani Noa for a year back in 1997-1998 and dancer Cris Judd from 2001 until 2003. Anthony had two sons with former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres during their four-year marriage.

Who should Jennifer Lopez date next? >>

The timing of the divorce is interesting since both parties have split with their significant others. The American Idol judge called it quits with Casper Smart recently while the "Vivir Mi Vida" singer parted ways with Topshop heiress Chloe Green.

Lopez is not known for staying single for long, but will she ever get married again?

She told a network panel in January, "We'll see. I always believed in that institution. My parents were married for a very long time, for 35 years. I believe in it. It's difficult. I've had my challenges but at the same time I believe in love. That's the main thing."

As for Anthony, he seemed more hopeful — if he can find the right lady to settle down with.

He told Wendy Williams in February, "I believe in relationships. I believe that God has blessed me in so many ways. But when your house is empty and you don't have someone to invest in, if you don't have a witness, it's almost worthless."

3 Impossibly easy noodle recipes

Instead of regular spiral noodles with vodka sauce (which is his bachelor go-to), I made some fancy, updated noodle recipes with other things he loves, like sesame chicken and red pepper sauce over angel hair pasta. Even though he picked off the mussels and shrimp, he raved about the rest of it. I mean, you can't change them overnight, after all.

1. Sesame chicken and hoisin soba noodles recipe

Sesame chicken and hoisin soba noodles

This quick and easy chicken dish is made with precooked soba noodles to save time when you're busy.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound chicken thighs (with skin and bones)
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 8 ounces soba noodles, cooked
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 large carrots, sliced
  • 7 ounces shiitake mushrooms, chopped
  • 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 3-4 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro or parsley, divided
  • 3 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • Salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once the oil is heated, add the onions, carrots and mushrooms, and cook until softened, about 6 to 8 minutes. Remove the mix from the pan.
  2. Liberally sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the same skillet. Add the chicken, and cook until browned on both sides, about 6 minutes.
  3. Stir in the vegetables, water, hoisin sauce, sesame seeds and 1/4 cup of the chopped herbs. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook until the chicken is fully cooked through and the sauce is thickened, about 6 more minutes.
  4. Using tongs, mix in the soba noodles, and coat them with the sauce. Serve with additional sesame seeds and the remaining herbs.

2. Angel hair pasta with red pepper sauce and mussels recipe

Angel hair with red pepper sauce and mussels

It appears that Madonna can have any guy she wants, and this time it's a 26-year-old dancer. The singer and her last boyfriend, Brahim Zaibat, split up more than six months ago, but it looks like Madonna's new relationship isn't exactly brand new.

Miley Cyrus & Madonna teaming up for Unplugged >>

Madonna and dancer/choreographer Timor Steffens were seen leaving a Broadway show in New York City on Monday, June 17, but according to E! News, they have been dating since at least January. They were also spotted at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles earlier this year.

The Broadway show that Madonna and Steffens attended was a new play inspired by Tupac Shakur's music, called Holler If Ya Hear Me, according to the Associated Press. June 17 would have been Shakur's 43rd birthday.

Shakur's mother (and the show's producer), Afeni Shakur, was also in attendance.

A source said Madonna and Steffens met in Switzerland over the winter, and were introduced at Valentino's chateau where she was staying. But the source also said the relationship is "not serious" and likely "just a fling."

Even though Madonna was 29 years old when Steffens was born, he has a pretty impressive résumé as a dancer. He performed for Beyoncé at her 2010 Grammys performance, Michael Jackson's This Is It show, and has appeared in a few Chris Brown videos.

Madonna has been busy been working on a new album, but she has yet to release any details on when it might be released. Although Madge appears to prefer dating below her age range, at this point, the Material Girl can do pretty much whatever she pleases.

Lindsay Lohan might be working on London's West End

The U.K. theatre community better brace itself, because it looks like Lindsay Lohan is coming their way. The troubled starlet admitted some curious news to the New York Times on Tuesday at fashion designer Jeremy Scott's runway show in London.

She revealed to the periodical that she was in talks to join the show, Speed-the-Plow, by playwright David Mamet. The 27-year-old actress would make her debut in November.

James Franco writes a short story about Lindsay Lohan >>

Lohan shared, "It's the first time I've done a stage play or anything like that. I'm nervous but I'm excited."

The story is a black comedy about the cruel side of the movie industry and it follows two Hollywood producers looking for their big break. The Mean Girls star would tackle the role of Karen, who is one of the producer's secretaries.

The character was originated on Broadway in 1988 by Madonna. The recent revival featured Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss in that same role.

PHOTOS: Lindsay Lohan parties in Cannes after lawsuit >>

It seems that Lohan is quite serious about taking on the show, because she told the paper she was limiting her time at London Fashion Week for the theatre.

"I'm going back to my West End world," she said. "I'm a little overwhelmed. I haven't done this — I haven't really done the shows — in the last few years. But I live for fashion."

This would be considered a major comeback for the actress. Her work in recent years has been a few guest star roles, the much-maligned movie, The Canyons, and her recent reality show on the OWN network.

Style secrets from real moms

Daughter Whispering In Mother's Ear

Acessories that spice up an outfit

As moms, we are constantly on the go, so transformational fashion is a must. Having pieces that can get you through day and night and adapt to your needs will help you feel comfortable and stylish, says fashion designer Summer Kramer. Scarves, bracelets and statement necklaces, oh my.

"Always have your go-to accessories to easily spice up any outfit," she advises. "I look for pieces that can take the dress I wore to run errands into the dress I wear to dinner."

Have go-to classics

Kramer, who is founder and designer of SummerSkin, a line of stylish women's clothing with built-in sun protection, says remembering the classics is also a must.

"When I'm running around with my 3-year-old one minute, and need to be out the door the next, my favorite blazer gives me an instant outfit upgrade," she says. "Whether it's with my jeans and a T-shirt or over a maxi dress, I can go from mom to mogul in 30 seconds."

Stick to gorgeous flats

Investing in flats can do the impossible — help a mom feel stylish while running after her kids. "Heels have their place in a mom's wardrobe, but with so many beautiful flats, it's hard to say no to fabulous — and comfortable — feet on my daughter's never-ending tricycle rides," Kramer says.

Plan ahead

Meg Marra, a full-time working mom to a 2-year-old son, says her biggest style secret is to simply plan ahead.

"Always plan your outfit, shoes and accessories the night before — even and especially on the weekends — and lay it out so you can throw it on quickly in the morning without thinking," she says.

Even having a "uniform" can help with planning. For example, Marra's go-to outfit on the weekend includes chino shorts, a tank or printed button-front top, flat sandals and a cute baseball cap.

"All I need to do is make sure I have a clean cache of these items ready to go, and then pulling outfits from my closet becomes easy and formulaic," she says.

Add a punch of color

During the summer, opt for a punch of color, such as a skinny mint or petal-pink belt around the waist or a pastel point-toe flat, advises beauty expert Jenn Falik, mother of a 3-year-old and spokesperson for Slim Fast's new summer weight-loss program. Get thrifty

Worried about spending too much? It's easy to feel strapped for cash when your children need new soccer gear or want dance lessons. Your closet doesn't have to suffer, though. Savers Family of thrift stores, for example, offer great options for mommies who need an outing but don't want to empty their purses.

Kelly Snyder, founder of KansasCityMamas.com and a Savings.com DealPro, says becoming part of rewards programs at drugstores can also help save money when buying beauty or personal care items.

"If you use department store beauty brands, make sure to find out when they have bonus buy events," she said. "Purchasing your items during those events usually nets you another $50 to $100 in free product."

Love and relationships aren't easy. Just ask Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The Hollywood power couple has struggled over the last year to stay together. However, it looks like they are winning the fight.

The And So It Goes star told People magazine that they are back on track.

Douglas shared, "A lot of it has to do with age. When you've accomplished a certain amount in your career, you're not so focused on your ambitions. It makes you appreciate — and hopefully you do that sooner rather than later — the value of your partner."

Yay! Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones are "going great" >>

He even offered up an analogy with orchids as his inspiration. The 69-year-old star said, "Like a lovely orchid, or anything else that's nurtured, marriage prospers and grows, but if it's ignored, it withers."

The duo went through a tremendous amount of stress with Douglas battling tongue cancer and Zeta-Jones continually managing her bipolar disorder. Douglas' son, Cameron, from his first marriage, has also been imprisoned for drug-related charges.

Douglas and his 44-year-old wife have two kids together — son Dylan, 13, and daughter Carys, 11. As parents, they have been very honest about what the family has endured over the last few years.

He explained, "I'm more and more prone to tell kids just about everything. There's been a whole school of thought about things you should not tell children — if there's a problem in a relationship, [people say], 'Let's not let the kids know.' Kids know. They know everything. I would err on the side of pretty much sharing everything. They can digest it, you know? It's life."

With a new perspective on his family life and marriage, it sounds like the couple is stronger than ever.

The little girl's cousins include Trump's sister Ivanka's kids — Arabella, 2, and Joseph, 8 months. Donald Trump, Sr. has a young child of his own, with third wife Melania Knauss. She gave birth to son Barron, their only child together, in 2006.

Ivanka Trump previously opened up about her famous dad as a grandparent, explaining he's good with Arabella, but only when she's there, too.

"He wouldn't know what to do if she was crying or needed a diaper change. Although I think he'd figure it out," the beauty explained to Redbook. "He was always a great father in that he was always there. Now that my brothers and I work with him, we've become even closer. If we talked a lot before, we speak 50 times a day now. I spend half the time in his office. It's wild."

Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield fight paparazzi the right way

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield should win the prize for the couple of the decade. Not only are they adorable, talented and not so hard on the eyes, they are also extremely intelligent humanitarians.

VIDEO: Celebs read tweets — Emma Stone smells like cat pee >>

For the second time since the duo began dating in 2011, Stone and Garfield turned a potentially negative and annoying situation into a positive experience that helps others. The Amazing Spider-Man stars learned that the restaurant they were dining at had been swarmed by paparazzi on Tuesday, according to People, and instead of running from the photogs, the two crafted small, handwritten signs that threw some publicity to their favorite charities. Garfield and Stone then exited the restaurant and used the signs to cover their faces.

"Good morning! We were eating and saw a group of guys with cameras outside. And so we thought, let's try this again. We don't need the attention, but these wonderful organizations do," read the sign in front of Stone's face. "Www.youthmentoring.org, www.autismspeaks.org, (and don't foget) www.wwo.org, www.gildasclubnyc.org. Here's to the stuff that matters. Have a good day!" read Garfield's note.

The couple, who has been together for about three years, pulled the same stunt back in 2012, when they used the opportunity to give recognition to Worldwide Orphans and Gilda's Club New York City, which helps give support to those living with lung cancer.

There has been a recent movement of celebrities fighting back against aggressive and sometimes inappropriate paparazzi. This past year, Kristen Bell and her husband, Dax Shepard, waged a war against the paps and launched their campaign, #NoKidsPolicy, which challenges media outlets to not show any unauthorized paparazzi shots of the children of celebrities. Bell and Shepard have been successful in gaining support from many major media sources, as well as their famous friends.

Stone and Garfield's positive approach is definitely different and refreshing compared to how some celebs react to the frustrating paparazzi situation. In March, Kanye West was sentenced to anger management therapy after he faced charges of misdemeanor battery stemming from an attack on a reporter at LAX last July.

Kim Kardashian starts debate: Is it cruel to pierce baby's ears?

When Kim Kardashian posted this picture online earlier this week, she let loose an onslaught of criticism. Well known for causing plenty of scandal, Kardashian managed to stir up some controversy that wasn't just about her cleavage.

So what's all the fuss about?

Well, apparently, earrings.

Are they earrings or exploitation?

The picture that Kardashian shared with the world showed her beautiful baby North — and her beautiful new ear candy, a pair of sparkling, most likely very real diamond earrings. Pierced earrings.

Now, although it's not exactly a new thing for baby girls to have pierced ears, a lot of people have taken offense to Kardashian piercing her 1-year-old's ears and the fact that she then chose to adorn them with earrings that undoubtedly cost more than many of us make in a year.

So the question is, why did she do it? Isn't it enough that she makes a living based on her appearance? Does she really have to drag her innocent daughter into the mix as well?

What's the big deal?

Some parents don't see ear piercing as that big of a deal at all. Megan, a mother of two boys and a girl, chose to have her daughter's ears pierced at only 3 months. When I spoke to her, she expressed hesitation in revealing her identity, saying that she received a lot of "flack and judgment" for the decision.

Megan's decision to have her daughter's ears pierced was born simply out of excitement for having a girl. "I had been desperate for a baby girl," she explains. "I was the oldest of three younger brothers, my cousins were all boys, my husband had only a brother (with no girls born in the past 60 years on his side) and we'd already had two boys. I didn't think it was in the cards for me to have a girl!" So when Megan and her husband were surprised with their third child and found out she was a girl, Megan was excited to spoil her with all things girl. "When I had her — after all the blue jeans, fart jokes, boy everything — I knew that I wanted her to be as girly as possible. She is always dressed in pink, 99 percent of the time in a dress, and yes, I had her ears pierced at the age of 3 months. If she decides she doesn't want them when she is older, she can take them out!"

Dr. Dyan Hes, medical director of Gramercy Pediatrics is on Megan's side. Although she thinks that the baby should have a tetanus shot before having the procedure done, "after 2 months it is usually fine if they’ve been vaccinated."

Keeping up appearances

Now who among us hasn't oohed and ahhed over a new baby and her pierced ears? It's undeniably cute, but it also carries with it a little bit of the question of why we are so bent on making our baby girls the object of affection from their appearance from day one.

Granted, it's hard to say if pierced ears are any different from say, those ridiculous oversized flower headbands that all of my daughters have rocked at some point or another, but there's also a bit of a difference between pulling on a pretty onesie or slapping on a headband and punching actual holes in our baby's bodies.

Ear piercing is also a procedure that can cause harm to a baby. Taking care of newly-pierced ears is actually a lot of work and if not properly attended to, can lead to an infection, among other concerns.

"The first concern for babies less than 6 months of age is possibility of infection," explains Dr. Stan Spinner, chief medical officer of Texas Children's Pediatrics in Houston. "Even a minor skin infection in a very young baby can quickly become a potentially serious infection. Our second concern is that the earlobe often changes somewhat anatomically from newborn to after the first few months. A good spot for an ear stud in a newborn may not look right six months later."

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends waiting to get a child's ears pierced until she is "mature enough to take care of the pierced site herself."

It can wait

Practical reasons aside, I think it's best to hold off on piercing a little girl's ears. Of course, it's a personal decision, as is anything in parenting, but the fact that we have a bit of history with damaging women's bodies in the sake of looking "pretty" (bound feet or restrictive corsets, anyone?) warrants putting a little more thought into the decision.

For our family, ear piercing marked a milestone in a little girl's life. I can still remember my dad tearing up a little when he found out his baby girl wanted to get her ears pierced. There's just something about it that seems to take away a little bit of innocence.

And I'm not saying I'm against ear piercing. I fully recognize that we do all kinds of crazy things in the name of appearance, from tanning to whitening our teeth, and I confess that I don't feel fully dressed unless I'm wearing my earrings. But I also appreciate that my parents made me wait until I could grasp the full meaning of what it meant to get my ears pierced and, more importantly, take care of them myself.

Online community rallies around infant with rare tumor

Infant holding mother's finger | Sheknows.com

Early this year, we shared the story of how Marianne Canada's career took her from bartender to host of HGTV's Weekday Crafternoon. Last week, in a whirlwind series of doctor's appointments, her infant son was diagnosed with a rare tumor. He started chemotherapy on Tuesday.

Within hours, Canada's friends began an email thread brainstorming ways to support Hugo and his family. A donation page was set up, and friends divided themselves into teams to organize care packages and meals. In less than a week's time, friends and coworkers have raised over $27,000 toward Hugo's medical expenses.

Supporting a friend in need

Over the past few days, Hugo's supporters have shown that online friends are real friends — and that they can be really resourceful. On a recent evening full of anxiety and fear, Canada tweeted that she was craving cheesecake. An hour later, a cheesecake delivery showed up at the hospital. Though Canada has only asked for prayers and hope for her baby, her friends — many of them mothers — have mobilized to do whatever they can to help the family through this difficult time.

#GoHugo

As the story of Hugo's fight has spread, the hashtag #gohugo has begun to go viral on Twitter and Instagram. Dozens of photos and notes have been shared by friends and celebrities cheering Hugo on. At a time when hope is essential, these simple gestures of faith have brought comfort to the Canada family.

Horace Silver's son Gregory announced that his father passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 85, according to NPR. The legendary musician died of natural causes.

Legendary jazz musician Dave Brubeck dies at 91 >>

Silver, who was born in Connecticut and moved to New York in the 1950s, was a pioneer pianist and composer who branded his own rhythmic jazz style that was a blend of R&B and gospel known as "hard bop." During the course of his career, Silver performed with other musical legends Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Lester Young and Art Blakey.

In February 2005, Silver received the Presidential Merit Award at the Grammys, according to his official website, www.horacesilver.com. "I've tried my best to bring the music that God has given me," Silver said as he accepted his award. "Thankfully, you've accepted it... and hopefully it will continue to live on, bless, and uplift people.

"My health, both mental and physical, is good, and I intend to pursue new and different approaches to my music and my career," Silver wrote in his 2006 autobiography, Let's Get to the Nitty Gritty. "I will search for hidden talents that I didn't know I had and do my best to cultivate them. I am grateful for each day, and I will try to use each day as a stepping stone to greater achievements."

Casey Kasem's kids shut out by stepmom >>

It's been a truly sad week for music history, as the world also lost icon Casey Kasem just three days ago. Kasem passed away Sunday morning at the age of 82 in a California hospital after battling dementia for several years. Kasem launched the show, American Top 40, in 1970 and hosted the show until 1988, when he reformatted it and changed the name to Casey's Top 40. American Top 40 later returned to the airwaves and has been hosted by Ryan Seacrest since 2004.

Condolences to Silver's friends and loved ones.

Chelsea Hendler gets new talk show on Netflix

Chelsea Handler hasn't wasted any time, has she? Back in April, Handler announced that she would be leaving E! at the end of her contract and saying goodbye to her show Chelsea Lately. Not to be outdone, the network turned around and said they were ending her contact early and shutting down the show in August.

Nope, Chelsea Handler won't replace Craig Ferguson >>

It's been barely a month and Handler has already moved on to greener pastures. Netflix has announced that they have offered the comedian a contract that includes a new talk show set to go on the air in early 2016. Under the contract, Handler will also be creating four new docu-comedy specials. The specials will cover her exploration of a wide range of subjects, including politics, the NBA draft, NASCAR and Silicon Valley.

Not only that, but Netflix will also be premiering Handler's first hour-long stand-up comedy performance on Oct. 10, 2014. The special will be based on her Uganda Be Kidding Me tour and will be taped June 20 at Chicago's Harris Theater.

Celebrities who need to star in a movie together: Jennifer Aniston & Chelsea Handler, more >>

It looks like Handler definitely got the better end of the deal and announced in a statement how happy she was with her choice.

"If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested," Handler said. "I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch, so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move.

"I'm more excited than I've been in a while, and the team at Netflix is the most forward-thinking, alert group I've sat down with in ages," Handler also said in the statement.

Netflix has been making a name for itself with series like Orange Is the New Black and House of Cards, which fans eagerly binge-watch the moment they are released on the network. How will the network handle a talk show, which is traditionally done in a live TV format?

In a statement, Netflix said that they are "looking forward to reimagining the late-night talk show," which could mean that viewers are about to be introduced to a new type of talk show viewing experience.
