Sunday dinner: Pork lo mein

Pork lo mein

Try your hand at a favorite takeout dish. This Sunday dinner recipe for pork lo mein is easy to make, and you won't have to wait long to enjoy it.

It's almost a no-brainer to reach for chicken when it comes to adding protein to classic meals you serve to your family, but it doesn't have to rule the roost! Why not try adding pork to a restaurant-favorite dish like lo mein? You'll love the flavor, and it's just as easy to cook as chicken.

Pork lo mein

It doesn't take long to put this dish together, and you can use whatever veggies — and noodles — you have on hand. I happened to have udon noodles in my cupboard, so that's what I used, but you could use linguine just as easily. Your family will rave over this tasty, takeout-style dish.

Pork lo mein recipe

Serves 4-6

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound pork, fat trimmed, sliced into strips about 2 inches long and 1 inch wide
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/3 white onion, diced
  • 1 large red bell pepper, seeds and membrane removed, cut into strips
  • 2 cups frozen shelled edamame
  • 8-10 ounces lo mein noodles (you can also use udon noodles or even linguine)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-2 teaspoons fresh ginger, minced
  • 2/3 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2-3 dashes hot sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Sesame seeds and chopped green onion as garnish (optional)

Directions:

  1. Add the garlic, ginger, chicken broth, soy sauce, sesame oil, hot sauce, sugar and cornstarch to a medium bowl and whisk to combine. Set aside.
  2. Add the vegetable oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, add the onion and cook for about 2 minutes. Add the pork and cook until it's no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes.
  3. As the pork is cooking, cook your noodles according to the package directions, and drain them. You'll want to try to coordinate the finish time of the noodles to just before adding the remaining vegetables to the skillet.
  4. Add the red pepper and edamame to the skillet along with the reserved liquid mixture and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the vegetables start to become tender.
  5. Add the noodles to the mixture and toss to coat and warm them.
  6. Serve hot on individual plates garnished with sesame seeds and green onion.

Ditch takeout and make this favorite at home!

 Clementine and mascarpone cake

In winter, there aren't many fruits to choose from. But one of my favorites comes out during this season, making the limited choices more bearable. Clementines color my kitchen with desserts, savory dishes or just plain fruit to enjoy after a satisfying meal. They are sweet and fragrant, being hybrids of mandarins and sweet oranges. In this recipe, I used mascarpone cheese to give it a bit of moisture and softness. With the citrusy syrup seeping through the cake, it's clementine heaven!

 Clementine and mascarpone cake

1

Clementine mascarpone cake recipe

Yields a 9-inch cake

Ingredients:

  • Knob of butter
  • 1-1/2 cups flour plus more for sprinkling on the springform pan
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • 9 ounces mascarpone
  • 1/2 cup clementine juice (about 4 clementines, depending on size)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • Clementine syrup (see recipe below)
  • Clementine garnish (see recipe below)
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Directions:

  1. Rub the butter in the inside part (bottom and sides) of the round springform pan or baking pan you are using. Sprinkle it with flour, covering the butter that you just rubbed on, then shake off the excess. Set aside.
  2. In a bowl, beat the eggs with the sugar and salt until the mixture becomes light-colored and fluffy.
  3. In another bowl, gradually add the clementine juice to the mascarpone while mixing with a wooden spoon. Then mix in gently the egg and sugar mixture.
  4. Sift the flour and baking powder while adding them to the batter. Mix gently to combine.
  5. Transfer the batter to the springform pan.
  6. Positioning the cake in the middle rack, bake in a preheated oven of 350 degrees F for 50 minutes or until cooked through. If after 30 minutes the cake's surface has already turned golden brown and still needs more cooking, quickly cover it with aluminum foil to avoid burning the surface. (There's no need to seal it well on the sides.) Continue cooking.
  7. Check if the cake is cooked by inserting a knife at the center of the cake. If it comes out clean, then it's already cooked. If not, leave the cake for a few more minutes in the oven.
  8. Let it cool. When it has cooled, take it out of the pan and transfer it to a serving plate.
  9. Brush a generous amount of the clementine syrup on the top and sides of the cake.
  10. Arrange the sliced clementines and fresh mint leaves on top. Brush more syrup on the clementines to make them shiny.
  11. Serve the cake with the remaining syrup. It can be poured on the individual slices of the cake to give more flavor and moisture to the cake.

Clementine syrup & garnish recipe

Yields enough for a 9-inch cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup clementine juice (about 8 clementines, depending on the size) plus 1 tablespoon zest, grated
  • 1/3 cup granulated white sugar
  • 6 clementines (depending on size), sliced

Directions:

  1. Over medium-low heat, in a small saucepan, combine the clementine juice and sugar.
  2. When it starts to boil, turn the heat down to low and simmer for about  7-8 minutes or until it becomes lightly syrupy in consistency. It will become thicker when cold.
  3. Add the clementine zest 1 minute before turning off the heat.
  4. Transfer the syrup to a small bowl.
  5. Over medium-low heat, in the same saucepan, distribute the clementine slices and cook both sides, about 2 minutes each.

Well, well, well, it looks as though Madonna is going to be one celebrity who definitely cannot wait for Season 4 of HBO's Game of Thrones!

15 Best moments from the 15-minute Game of Thrones trailer >>

The Queen of Pop decided that she wanted to embrace the world of fantasy and dress up as the exiled royal Game of Thrones character Daenerys Targaryen — played by the beautiful Emilia Clarke — for Purim on Saturday.

The songstress took to Instagram to share a picture of herself looking very striking in a Daenerys Targaryen "Mother of Dragons" costume, complete with a platinum blond braided and wavy wig, and two tiny dragon figurines on her shoulders.

She captioned the picture, "Happy Purim!!!!! All Hail All Queens! ##certainty."

At least the "Like a Virgin" hit maker's latest Instagram image will thankfully cause less controversy than her previous posts have, some of which include the picture she posted of her underage son Rocco holding a bottle of alcohol and her use of the N-word in a caption.

According to Us Weekly, Madonna holds an annual Purim gathering to celebrate the Jewish holiday that commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire, which is traditionally celebrated by observers who dress up with masks and costumes. It is no secret that Madonna has practiced Kabbalah for years now, and she obviously decided to go all out with her costume this year.

A celebrity death hoax has struck again, and this time its victim is actor Wayne Knight!

Was the Seinfeld reunion worth the wait? >>

Fans feared for the worst when the internet decided to trend the death of the 58-year-old star on Saturday, reporting that he had been in a horrific tractor-trailer accident near the Pennsylvania-New York state border in Eldred Township.

Jerry Seinfeld: Forbes' top-earning comedian of 2013 >>

There were even reports from several publications suggesting that the funny man — known for his role as Jerry Seinfeld's nemesis Newman on the hit TV series Seinfeld — had sadly died.

In fact, the death hoax was so elaborate that according to Contact Music, even a fake TMZ-inspired website called TMZ Today reported that, "Police have identified the deceased as the lovable 'Newman,' McKean County Coroner Jeff Levin said Knight died of blunt force trauma at the scene."

Chloë Moretz fights back against death hoax, calls it "sick" >>

However, having seen the madness that was unfolding, the Jurassic Park actor decided to take to Twitter himself and assure fans that he was, in fact, alive and well. "Some of you will be glad to hear this, others strangely disappointed, but….I am alive and well!"

"Does someone have to DIE to trend? Geez! Thanks for all the love everybody. I didn't know you cared. Glad to be breathing!" Knight added.

And we're glad, too, because there's no doubt this was an unpleasant experience for Knight. But hey, it could be much worse. He could be Jackie Chan, who somehow manages to find himself the victim of a celebrity death hoax every year.

Enough with the celebrity death hoaxes already, people!

Whiskey-inspired baby names

Whiskey glasses on bar | Sheknows.com

Whiskey bottles, believe it or not, actually have plenty of baby name inspiration printed right on their labels. Check out how many names we were able to come up with just by looking at a few!

An unusual source
of inspiration

Looking for baby names can lead moms and dads to think outside the box, as traditional methods of finding the perfect moniker can come up empty. But if you know anyone who likes to have a shot of whiskey every now and then, you might be familiar with some whiskey brand names, such as Evan Williams, Jack Daniel and Jim Beam — great names, right? Well, it doesn’t stop with these three that are a little more well known.

Straight from the source

These baby names come from distillery names and the brands they represent. In some cases, we were able to draw inspiration from more than one name in a brand, such as Elijah Craig. And in other cases, we knocked off a final “s,” such as in the case of Evan Williams and T.W. Samuels.

Most of the names included here are boy names, but there are a few girl ones in there as well, such as Rose and Harper. Many names are traditional and familiar, as these brands are often named after the men who were responsible for their creation, but others are a little off the beaten track, like Brooks and Rowan.

Whether you care for whiskey or not, you can’t deny that there are some pretty fabulous baby names represented amongst bottles that line shelves in homes. Maybe you’ll find a new favorite too.

INTERVIEW: Country newcomer Frankie Ballard talks whiskey, women and God

Frankie Ballard
When the news broke over the weekend that he'd earned his first No. 1 hit with the feel-good ballad "Helluva Life," Frankie Ballard took to Twitter and Facebook to thank his fans, country radio and, like any good country boy, Jesus.

Never mind that he's not from the South. Country music is a state of mind, and Ballard embodies the best of what the genre represents: hard work, genuine humbleness and a fun-loving spirit.

"Country music is everywhere, and it's huge," the Michigan native asserts. "It's about relating to the people… that's what country's always been about. As long as there's people to be related to, country music's gonna work."

When it comes to Ballard, boy does it work — a fact that can be at least partially attributed to his Michigan upbringing (which, for the record, he's damn proud of). Being raised in the state's blue-collar town of Battle Creek molded him into the musician he is today.

"You know, I've got some rock 'n' roll roots and those things have definitely influenced my sound," he said, "but most people would be very surprised to see how big a country music following there is up in the Great White North."

It was in that Great White North that Ballard grew up listening to country and rock legends like Elvis and Johnny Horton. A sports fanatic as a kid, he went on to play baseball at Western Michigan University before his "minor" interest in music morphed into his true passion. By the time he graduated, Ballard was playing gigs more than 200 nights a year.

It was in 2008, though, that the bona fide road warrior landed on a stage that would truly change his life — he entered and won Kenny Chesney's Next Big Star competition, giving him the chance to open for the "There Goes My Life" superstar.

He went on to tour for Taylor Swift and, in 2011, realized a dream opening for one of his biggest influences, Bob Seger.

"Here I am, a new artist, and I had a 45-minute set, a full band and it was just me and Bob… it was just like, 'Wow,'" Ballard elaborated on one particular gig at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

After finishing his set and coming back to watch Seger's, Ballard could see Seger talking to a man in flannel. "Hey Frankie," Seger called out to Ballard, "this is Bruce Springsteen. Bruce, hey, this is my Michigan guy." Springsteen then looked at Ballard and said, "I caught your set, it sounded good man."

"I was like, 'Oh my God!'" Ballard gushed. "That was probably my favorite touring moment of all time."

It's a pretty safe assumption that Ballard is poised for many more memorable tour moments. In addition to hitting No. 1, "Helluva Life," the debut single from Ballard's well-rounded Sunshine & Whiskey album, has sold more than 300,000 digital copies already and was recently featured on ABC's hit show Nashville.

"Of all the things I've ever done in my career, I never got as many text messages about anything as I did being on that show," Ballard laughed. "People were like, 'Man, Frankie, you've really made it man! You were on that show Nashville — congratulations!"

For Ballard, this kind of success has been a long time coming and not without a few bumps in the road along the way, which is why "Helluva Life" resonates with him.

"I hope, if nothing else, that people just get a little hope to kind of hang in there, put one foot in front of the other and get up the next day and keep on tryin' at whatever they want to achieve," Ballard drawled with his trademark rasp.

As for the rest of Sunshine & Whiskey's stellar roster of songs, which Ballard calls his "little children," the musician has a soft spot for "It Don't Take Much" — which he co-wrote with a friend — and "Don't Tell Mama I Was Drinking."

When we ask (after reeling in our jealousy) if he'll be playing them at the Rock the Ocean's Tortuga Music Festival in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in April, Ballard can't stifle his excitement about the upcoming gig. "Oh, you won't be able to get away from 'em!" he laughed. "They're gonna be raining down from the stage!"

Of course, we had a sneaking suspicion it wasn't just the music Ballard was amped up about. The 31-year-old hasn't exactly been shy over the years about his two major weaknesses: whiskey and women. And we were willing to wager there'd be a surplus of at least one at Tortuga.

Ballard's response when we asked if he was ready for a little trouble? A resounding, "Hallelujah."

"Yeah, you know, I'm in my troublesome years," he said with a charming twang. "I'm right in the middle of 'em. Those kinds of festivals, they never let you down. There's always plenty of pretty girls scantily clad and cold beverages to go around. So, really, Tortuga cannot get here fast enough. After a tough winter, I'm ready for that!"

But rest assured, Ballard won't get too carried away — he relies on his faith to keep him grounded.

"These two tattoos on my forearms are both spiritual in nature, and I use them as tools to inject God into the conversation, at least to proclaim the kind of faith I carry in my heart," Ballard elaborated of his American traditional, '40s-style tattoos, one of which features an eagle and the inscription "Soldier in the Army of the Lord."

Clearly, Ballard has a lot going for him, but it's still the little joys he espouses in "Helluva Life" that this rising star relishes. "The simple pleasures in life for me are, like, going out and cutting wood, you know?" Ballard mused. "It makes me feel blessed that I'm able to get out and do things like that."

The cast of Orange Is the New Black gathered for the second night of PaleyFest in Hollywood, California, on Friday to talk about their upcoming season, how rough life in prison really is and those essentials you need in prison. SheKnows was there on the red carpet to get the inside scoop.

Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, understands how important it is to have the goods for bartering behind prison walls.

Grab your jumpsuits! Orange Is the New Black returns in June >>

She explained, "[You need] stuff to trade, you need to be a good bargainer. It's all about what you have to get what you need."

Her key essentials were "pads and chocolate. Every woman needs that." As any OITNB fan knows, maxi pads can be used for just about anything in prison — from cleaning supplies to flip-flops for the shower.

YaelStonewhitedress

As for Yael Stone, who plays the small but mighty Morello, she took the safety first approach to prison must-haves. She shared, "A knife, something to defend yourself with."

However, Stone did think of a good practical item to have on hand while dressed in her beige garb. The petite actress exclaimed, "Oh, what about Q-tips! They love Q-tips! You can clean with them, you can build with them, there's a whole bunch of things you can do with them."

While there are some pretty humorous uses for everyday items like maxi pads and cotton swabs, there's definitely a more somber side to life behind prison gates.

INTERVIEW: OITNB's Taryn Manning talks "getting weird" and Season 2 >>

Brooks summed up what she learned from some of the real inmates she worked with before taking on the role.

"Some of the things that hurt me is the realization that some of the women like Taystee go through this thing of going in and out of prison because they don't have a place to sleep or a place to work and eat, so they return," she said. "That was devastating to me, that's the world that we live in."

Orange Is the New Black premieres on Netflix on June 6.

A witness for the prosecution has testified that Oscar Pistorius had a great passion for firearms but that he was not always responsible with his weapons.

Sean Rens, manager of the International Firearm Training Academy, told the court that the Olympian has "a great love and enthusiasm" for guns. Rens also testified that despite answering all of the questions on the self-defense portion of a guns test correctly, Pistorius still went into "full combat mode" in a 2012 incident.

Oscar Pistorius trial begins with dramatic testimony >>

Rens described one conversation in which Pistorius told him that he cleared his home with a drawn weapon after being startled by a noise.

"He went into what we call 'code red' or combat mode," Rens said. "When he came to the source of the noise, it was the laundry or something."

Pistorius himself had described the incident in a since-deleted tweet from November 2012. "Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and thinking its (sic) an intruder to go into full combat recon mode into the pantry!" he wrote.

Oscar Pistorius breaks down over gruesome testimony at trial >>

Rens also described how Pistorius answered correctly when quizzed on how to handle his firearm in various self-defense scenarios, including when two men approach a home, when they break into a house, when they begin stealing belongings and order the homeowner to leave and if the owner is threatened with death while standing behind a security gate.

In each instance, Rens said Pistorius correctly answered "no" when asked if it was appropriate to fire at the hypothetical intruders. This understanding of South African gun laws would seem to show that Pistorius is telling the truth about believing Reeva Steenkamp was an intruder when he shot and killed her through the bathroom door, flouting those very gun regulations.

Rens testified that Pistorius was aware that he was only to fire his weapon against an intruder if that person was advancing with his own weapon drawn.

Maybe fast food doesn't make kids fat

Fast food obesity myth?
Family ordering fast food | Sheknows.com

It seems to be a commonly held belief that the prevalence of fast food in our society is the main cause of childhood obesity. A new study seems to suggest otherwise.

What if it's not the chicken nuggets?

Fast food equals fat food, right? It's been an easy target for blame when childhood obesity rates are climbing and so many families eat fast food more than just occasionally. Researchers at the University of North Carolina wondered if there were actually something else going on that's the major factor contributing to childhood obesity — and what they discovered was a more deeply rooted family issue.

What researchers studied

Barry Popkin, Ph.D., is a professor of nutrition at The University of North Carolina's Gillings School of Global Public Health. He wanted to explore the idea that fast food was the main contributor to high rates of childhood obesity. He and his research team dug deeper into the issue and compared statistical data in an effort to evaluate possible relationships between the consumption of fast food, overall eating patterns within families and the risk of obesity in U.S. children. The January 2014 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition included their research findings.

"Turns out that overall dietary patterns... were the main contributing factor in childhood obesity."

Popkin's team of researchers used data collected on 4,466 children between the ages of 2 and 18 years old. This information was collected between 2007 and 2010 as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). To help determine which factors were most related to diet, eating patterns and the prevalence of obesity, the researchers categorized the children into three groups:

  • Fast-food nonconsumers: 50 percent of the children
  • Low consumers of fast food (less than or equal to 30 percent of calories from fast food): 40 percent of the children
  • High consumers of fast food (greater than 30 percent of calories from fast food): 10 percent of the children

Results

Researchers wanted to see if there were indeed a direct correlation between the excess calories in fast food and the prevalence of childhood obesity — or if there were more to it than that. While there have been parallel increases in both childhood obesity and the consumption of fast food, the two aren't necessarily related.

As the researchers hypothesized, the children who ate fast food the most also had poor nutritional habits when they ate other foods. This group of children consumed fewer fruits and vegetables, less dairy and more sugar-sweetened beverages (referred to as a 'Western" diet) than did the group that didn't consume fast food at all. Yes, this was also the group most likely to be overweight or obese, but after researchers adjusted statistics for the rest of the diet of children in this group, fast food intake became insignificant. It turned out that overall dietary patterns — not just fast food intake — were the main contributing factors in childhood obesity.

Help your kids eat healthier

Worried about your children's diet? Examples set at home are more likely to click and stay with your children, even when they start eating more meals away from home. See if you can find lower-fat or lower-calorie versions of your favorite recipes, or try to make substitutions for higher-fat ingredients.

While it may be hard, set a good example yourself by including dairy, fruits and vegetables in your daily diet, limiting your consumption of sugary drinks and choosing healthy snacks such as nuts or fruit. Eating fast food once in a while — as part of a well-balanced diet overall — is not going to cause your child to be obese.

Gifts that won't piss parents off

$

Girl with birthday present | Sheknows.com

Sometimes I wish I could be down with Barbies and mini pink computers and whatever else is being marketed to our kids these days. It would certainly make parental life easier. I’m really picky when it comes to toys for my child, and I’m not alone.

What picky parents say they prefer

I mean, I have a 4 year old daughter who is impressionable. Everywhere we turn, there’s some image of a made-up princess prostitute nightmare for preschoolers. I mean, are toy-makers trying to screw us all over? Because it sure seems like it.

But don’t fret because there are actually some original and creative toy choices out there for kids. I asked around and came up with a bunch of gifts that are totally PPA (picky-parent approved).

(The list of gifts we hate is way longer.)

1

Things that go
(and stay) outside

Many parents said they preferred toys that go outside versus inside. That way, even in the cold months, they remain outside or in the garage and never make their way into the house — woohoo! Playhouses were a favorite among PPs. They can range in price, especially if you're looking for a wooden model, and though we like to represent the smaller shops, the Neat and Tidy Cottage (Sam's Club, $136) is by far the most bang for your buck. For the summer months, a good old plastic pool is always a winner, as are simple gardening tools (For Small Hands, $17) for those little diggers.

2

Age-appropriate
crafts

There are so many cool crafts out there for kids. What parents say they enjoy most about their kids crafting is that they’re learning hand-eye coordination while also creating something they can wear or use. Kids these days are crazy for all things Rainbow Loom ($15), but there are tons of other simple ideas, like teaching kids to knit, for example. All you Neat and tidy cottage | Sheknows.comneed is a couple of kid-sized knitting needles and some yarn and before you know it, you’ve got yourself a whole new wardrobe!

3

Play tents/canopies

Haba knight tent | Sheknows.com

Hanging out in their own private play areas is something kids really love to do. I like the idea of kids having their own easily assembled tents or canopies like these (Bella Luna Toys, $130 and up) or this one (Land of the Nod, $99) because it means your couch cushions will actually stay on the couch instead of on the floor in the shape of a fort. Also, it’ll give you a little privacy of your own. Score!

4

A dress-up box

This is a great idea for storing dress-ups. Last Christmas, my daughter received one in the shape of an old suitcase that was purchased for a few dollars at a thrift store then fancied up with the words “Who am I going to be today?” written on it in glitter. Dress-ups are easy to come by and lead to all kinds of imaginative play. I have old shirts my daughter wears as dresses and thinks they are the greatest thing in the world. I mean, give them a couple pipe cleaners and all the sudden, they’re a butterfly for the afternoon. Flitter, flitter. There's really no need to run to Party City. Your local Salvation Army surely has plenty of fancy finds for your dress up box! Maybe just give it a quick wash before you slap a bow on it.

5

Kitchen
play things

Not just for girls, duh. Boys and girls alike love to make little kitchen creations and have tea parties. We made our own kitchen pretty easily out of an old hutch, but there are tons of play kitchens on the market that won’t break the bank. This play kitchen (Ikea, $80) is a popular wooden model and there are endless items to chose from to accompany it.

6

Something they
actually need

No surprise here, the number one thing picky parents said they wished their kids got more of was stuff they actually needed! Don’t be shy about asking parents what their kids could use even if you think it’s a boring gift. I’m speaking personally, but my kid never minds getting practical stuff. She loves a new sweater or pair of rain boots, as long as they have polka dots or are (ugh) pink.

What you need to know about the measles outbreak

Protect your family against measles

Cases of measles are popping up in some of this country's largest cities. Here's what you need to know about this serious childhood illness that was nearly eradicated in the U.S. just a decade ago.

Just a decade ago, the U.S. was a different place in terms of measles infections. Between 2000 and 2007, there were only 63 cases of measles reported in the U.S. each year, which were most often contracted abroad. But by 2013, there were 175 cases in the U.S. and that number is expected to climb. Already in 2014 there have been outbreaks of measles in some of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S., including an outbreak in New York City that has infected 19 people so far, and an additional Boston outbreak that exposed dozens of grocery-store shoppers to the illness.

The serious risks of measles

"[Measles] is responsible for the deaths of 158,000 people worldwide each year."

Measles isn't just a severe skin rash. Infections can lead to fever, diarrhea, encephalitis, pneumonia and even death. One in five young children who contract measles are hospitalized. It is extremely contagious, and according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), is responsible for the deaths of 158,000 people worldwide each year. Those most at-risk for serious complications are infants, young children and people with compromised immune systems.

Signs and symptoms of measles include

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Muscle pain
  • Bloodshot eyes or redness and irritation of the eyes
  • Sore throat
  • An itchy rash that appears 3 to 5 days after first signs of illness

Why vaccines are so important

So why the spike in measles cases? When the MMR vaccine was introduced in the U.S. in 1963, the occurrence of measles dropped drastically. In recent years, however, vaccination rates have decreased to 90 percent, which has reduced the "herd immunity" of people in the U.S. and increased our risk of contracting measles and other illnesses.

To prevent measles in your family, follow the CDC recommendations for vaccinations.

EXCLUSIVE CLIP: Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams on their American Hustle characters

JLaw's smiling mug features prominently in the most famous selfie to date, responsible for actually breaking Twitter. Co-star Bradley Cooper held the Samsung phone at the request of Ellen DeGeneres, snapping the shot that went around the world.

Though Oscar night is full of smiles, pretty dresses and clever product placement, it's the work that goes into creating amazing characters that sticks with us.

In American Hustle, Amy Adams plays Sydney Prosser, a scrappy beauty willing to create a whole alter ego for herself in order to "make it" in New York City. About Sydney, Adams focused on the survival aspect.

"It was really overwhelming, the emotional scope of each character. When I first talked to David about the film, I mean it was always about this struggle to survive."

Jennifer Lawrence plays Rosalyn Rosenfeld, wife to Irving (Christian Bale) and mother of their son. Somehow, the young actress really seemed to understand Rosalyn and bring a lot of emotion to her performance.

"I found her struggle really kind of interesting. That concept of not wanting to be alone so much that you'd rather be unhappy with somebody because I think our ideas of what our lives should be sometimes overwhelm what our lives actually are."

The scene between Rosalyn and Sydney in the bathroom is simply electric. The kiss that Adams slaps on Lawrence is rumored to be improvised — such a perfect character instinct.

Director David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) also weighed in on creating these powerful characters.

"I want the women to be as strong as the male characters and I want them to be very powerful presences. I think the whole movie elevates, to an extremely rich world, when the women are strong. Extremely strong, and extremely complicated."

Don't hold your breath for another royal baby — according to Prince William, one is quite enough right now.

Will and Kate visited the Irish Guards in honor of St. Patrick's Day, with William attending in the role of colonel of the regiment and Kate presenting sprigs of shamrocks to the officers and guards for the third year in a row.

See Kate dripping in diamonds >>

When William was asked by a regimental sergeant if he and the Duchess have plans to make Prince George a big brother, the second-in-line to the British throne replied, "Maybe one day. One's enough at the moment."

Kate later told a guardsman that little George is "very busy crawling and eating."

Added retired regimental cook Ray Kidd, "I asked him if he'd bring George next time and he said 'Yes that's a good idea, I'll try and get him fitted for the uniform.'"

Kate broke out a lovely new green coat from Hobbs for the occasion, which she paired with a textured leather belt, a green hat previously seen on the Duchess on Christmas Day 2013 and a pair of forest-green suede shoes by Emmy. Completing her ensemble were the Cartier shamrock brooch previously worn by Queen Alexandra, the Queen Mother and Princess Anne, along with Kiki McDonough cushion-cut green amethyst earrings and a gold and silver Tissot watch.

The new Hobbs coat marks a departure for Kate. The previous two years she attended this event she wore a green Emilia Wickstead dress coat which she had let out in 2013 to allow room for her growing baby bump.

Will and Kate are busy preparing for an official visit to Australia, where we will most likely catch a glimpse of Prince George for the first time since his christening.

On Friday night, the cast of Orange is the New Black gathered at the Dolby Theatre to talk about their buzzworthy first season at PaleyFest in Hollywood. SheKnows was there to get the inside scoop on Season 2 from several of the cast members.

One of the most moving story lines from Season 1 revolved around Laverne Cox's transgender character, Sophia Burset. Her time in jail resulted from financing her gender reassignment surgery through credit card fraud.

OITNB cast dishes on the must-have items in prison >>

Cox told SheKnows, "Sophia, I can't say too much, but as an actor, I got to do some stuff I've never done before. There was one scene in particular where I laughed so hard that I didn't think I'd be able to get through it because the writing was so funny."

She continued, "I don't want to reveal too much but Lorraine Toussaint, who plays Vee, joins us for Season 2. Vee shakes things up big time. It's major. Get ready, just hold on to your easy chair, your recliner, your computer screen. However you are watching, it's good."

With juicy morsels like that from Cox, it was interesting to hear that Yael Stone, who plays Morello, had a bang-up time on set, too.

"We go deeper and we learn more and it was really fun to do. That's all I can really say. There was one little stunt that I did that I was thrilled about. I got a stunt T-shirt for doing it. That was my highlight," said the pint-sized star.

While we don't really know what that means for her character just yet, Stone described the season as "scarier" than last year.

INTERVIEW: OITNB's Taryn Manning talks "getting weird" and Season 2 >>

Finally, we caught up with Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee. She was just upgraded to a series regular this season, so we will be seeing more of her character's history this year.

Brooks explained, "There's definitely a journey that Taystee takes in Season 2 that shocked me in a lot of ways. Choices that she's made this season are not choices I think she would make, so it was exciting to play. It also opened my eyes to who she really is and it made me think that she isn't really Taystee, she's Tasha. She hasn't discovered that yet."

The cast wasn't able to divulge much about Season 2, but these little hints definitely indicate that it's going to be a bumpier ride for Chapman and the rest of the inmates.

OITNB premieres on Netflix on June 6.

Sun dried tomato and feta stuffed artichokes

Growing up, holidays were always celebrated at my grandparents' house. But, even their big dining room set didn't have enough room for the adults and kids to sit all in once place. So, off to the hallway we went, relegated to the kids' table. It wasn't so much the different location or the fact that I had to sit with all my younger cousins (I'm the oldest in the family) that bothered me, it was the fact that we had to wait until all the food passed through the adult table before we got it. On Easter, that meant one thing: no stuffed artichokes left for the kids. I think the fact that I never got one of my own as a kid built up this larger-than-life expectation of a simple artichoke. But I can say I thoroughly enjoy each one I get to eat now because of that.

Sun dried tomato and feta stuffed artichokes

These springtime beauties are stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes and feta for a salty bite in each leaf. They're the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of the fresh vegetable season after a long, cold winter.

Sun-dried tomato and feta stuffed artichokes recipe

Serves 2-4

Ingredients:

  • 2 large artichokes
  • 3/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
  • 2 cups liquid (water or chicken broth)
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Trim the artichokes by cutting off the stem, removing the tough outer leaves and snipping the tops of the outer layer. Gently pull apart the middle leaves until the choke is exposed. Scoop the choke out with a spoon or mellon baller.
  3. Combine the breadcrumbs, sun-dried tomatoes, feta, garlic, parsley and olive oil in a food processor. Pulse a few times until everything is a breadcrumb-like texture.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the hollowed center of the artichokes and then carefully stuff the outer leaves.
  5. Bring the liquid and lemon juice to a simmer in a Dutch oven on the stovetop.
  6. Place the artichokes in the pot, drizzle with olive oil, cover and place in the oven for 45 minutes.
  7. Remove the cover and cook for another 5 minutes to brown the stuffing.
  8. Remove from the oven and serve warm. You can use the broth in the bottom of the pot for dipping.

Amanda Seyfried talks sex scenes, kissing Megan Fox

Amanda Seyfried is not the kind of actress who shies away from a role because of a sex scene and has actually learned to love those she has been in. Seyfried has kissed stars like Channing Tatum and Justin Timberlake, and even Jennifer's Body costar Megan Fox.

INTERVIEW: Amanda Seyfried gets raw with Lovelace >>

"We kissed really well together," Seyfried told W magazine of Fox. "We have similar kissing styles! If I watch that scene, it's actually really sexy."

Seyfried has appeared in many romantic comedies, including Mamma Mia, Dear John and Letters to Juliet, but got her start in Mean Girls and Veronica Mars. Seyfried admits those scenes have occasionally translated into real-life romances.

"When you're young, it's hard not to get together with your costar," she said. "It's not always a great idea, but the experience of making a television show or movie is so intimate and romantic. And I love acting like I'm in love!"

One of those romances was with her Mamma Mia costar Dominic Cooper, whom she was with for three years. Even though the relationship didn't work out, they still "love each other." She has most recently been linked to actor Justin Long.

Amanda Seyfried: I go for "creeps" >>

Seyfried's kissing scenes have occasionally gone further, and the actress told W that sex scenes are "great."

"A lot of my costars have been sexy guys my age who are really respectful and cool," she said. "So, why not? I'm not going to pretend it's not fun."

Seyfried's most-recent film, Lovelace, had her acting as a porn star, and her next role will have her next to (maybe dating?) a stuffed bear. The actress has signed on for Seth MacFarlane's Ted 2.

Seyfried's interview is in the April issue of W.

Courtney's Corner: Inspiration to help revitalize your bedroom for spring

Courtney Corner: Bedroom inspirations

As winter's harsh snowstorms turn into spring showers, we often find ourselves cleaning out our closets, restocking our pantries and sprucing up our living spaces for the pending warm weather. The secret for giving any bedroom an instant upgrade is to focus on three main items: killer bedding, a fantastic side table and statement art. To help with this task, we enlisted Karin Shieh, cofounder and designer at Crane & Canopy. Based in San Francisco, the company delivers high-quality and beautifully designed bedding at amazing prices. Using bedding from Crane & Canopy's signature and spring lines, we transformed a basic white bedroom into a bright and fresh sanctuary ready for afternoon naps and lazy weekends.

Let art be your guide

People tend to select artwork last, while I prefer to draw inspiration from a piece. This charcoal drawing was a find from a local auction, and when simply matted, it creates a dynamic focal point above the bed. With this visual anchor cast, we pulled the coral from the drawing and used it in our bedding.

Let Art Be Your Guide

Since the bedding and artwork are such strong statements in the space, let the bedside take a backseat. The clean, crisp lines and masculine feel of the white steel and birch wood nesting table was the perfect foil to the bedding. Lighting in the form of a glass and wood mushroom lamp and a colorful punch from a vintage vase finish off the table. An air plant finishes off the vignette and is the final touch to a whimsical bedroom update that is vibrant, youthful and most importantly, packed with color.

Let Art Be Your Guide 2

This coral hue is one of Shieh's favorite colors from Crane & Canopy's spring line. She says, "This color is absolutely gorgeous, especially accented with gray, plum purple, sea-foam green or yellow." We took Shieh's cue, pairing masculine purplish-gray pillows with a soft scalloped-edge sheet to create a beautiful mix of masculine and feminine.

Mix patterns with abandon

Don't be scared of pattern! This bed was inspired by the juxtaposition of stripes, chain links and geometrics. The combination may sound scary, but the results are a peaceful and calm bedroom. The mixing of patterns resulted in a relaxed and masculine space that is upbeat and unexpected, with the most unexpected touch being the black and white study of a hammer we used as our artwork.

 Patterns With Abandon

Continuing with our relaxed masculine theme, we paired a midcentury modern Saarinen table with a traditional pharmacy floor lamp. Aside from the obvious color connection thanks to the gray in both elements, each has a geometric quality that speaks to the duvet pattern. To break up the "gray parade," a pale pink soapstone vessel houses a potted fern, and a small dish for change and jewelry provides a shot of bright blue. And yes, you can use pink in a masculine setting, as long as it's in a natural form, as is the case for the plant pot.

Mix patterns with abandon 2

Since pattern and color are the heart of this bedroom, it's important to ensure the linens are properly cared for, Shieh points out. To maintain your bedding and keep it looking fantastic, Shieh recommends that everything is zipped and buttoned before being placed in the wash. "Cold water and the low setting on your dryer are your friends," states Shieh, as both will prevent your linens from wrinkling. Shieh also reminds us that "as tempting as it may be, don't overstuff your washer or dryer. It always results with a date with your ironing board."

Up next: Inspiration in the form of a table >>

{pageBreak}

Inspiration in the form of a table

Why not let a piece of furniture dictate your design direction? Purple and gold became the jumping off point thanks to the color of the bronze piece used as a side table. While the table may have inspired the color palette, the real star is your high school nemesis, geometry. If you look closely, triangles are everywhere in this bedroom: the purple and white chevron duvet meets royal purple pin tucks which nestle against an explosion of metallic triangles in the throw pillows, all of which are looked down upon by an angular geometric painting. It's all about the sharp angles that leave you with a cutting-edge design.

Inspiration in the Form of a Table

As mentioned previously, the color inspiration came from the table, but the circular and curvilinear design of the piece is a wonderful respite from angles in the room. The organic shape of the table is what takes the edge off the space. The lamp and accessories continue the rounded forms, as well as the metallic sheen of the table.

Inspiration in the Form of a Table 2

The metallic and silky sheens of the bedding play well together, Shieh points out. "When shopping for bedding, consider three things: thread count, materials and weave. For a lustrous and smooth feel, look for fabrics that are 300 to 450 thread count, made from 100 percent extra-long cotton, single ply and woven in a sateen weave, she says.

Inspiration in the Form of a Table 3

Find inspiration anywhere for your bedroom update for spring, whether it be in bedding, artwork or even a piece of furniture. Follow these tips, and you are ensured to turn your winter cave into a spring oasis in no time.
