What not to tell your girlfriends about your relationship

Woman talking to her friends

If you're like me, keeping anything from your girlfriends is difficult! However, it's more important for them to support your relationship (if you're happy), than to know the details of your private life with your boyfriend. Here are 11 things not to share with your friends, if you want them to like your significant other.

1

That one time when he...

Every couple fights. But if you tell your friends about every little spat, they'll think you're in a toxic relationship or that the two of you aren't compatible.

A friend of mine told me her boyfriend once "threw a book in her direction" during a fight. Now they're married and he seems totally normal, but I can't help but remember that he did that to her. And she's long forgotten and forgiven.

2

Who pays for what

It's no one's business who pays for what in a relationship. If you end up paying for dinner 80 percent of the time, or loaning your boyfriend money, it's probably better to keep that to yourself. Your friends don't understand his financial situation, and they'll think he's using you or a deadbeat.

3

That he doesn't like your friends

Obviously, this is a big one, and if he doesn't like your friends, you'll have to reflect on why that is and who is more important to you. If you plan to keep him around, don't tell your friends that he's not crazy about them!

What to do if you don't like your boyfriend's friends >>

4

That you don't talk about marriage

If you've been together for a while, it's expected that you'll want to settle down together. If you don't have these types of conversations yet, your friends might conclude that he's not serious about you.

Is he marriage material? >>

5

His flaws and bad habits

If you tell your friends that your boyfriend always leaves the toilet seat up or leaves his wet towel on the floor, they could blow that tiny flaw way out of proportion and upset you even more about the issue.

6

Your irrational suspicions

If you're simply the jealous type and know there's nothing to worry about deep down, don't mention that you find him going out to the garage to make phone calls occasionally. He could be calling the office or his mom, and until you find out for sure, don't falsely accuse him.

5 Signs he is lying >>

7

His family's dirty laundry

It can be easy to rip on his loser brother or cousin who's in prison, but you don't want that information to reflect negatively on your boyfriend.

8

That he's cheated on an ex

You might be able to get past the fact that he's cheated on an ex, but your friends never will!

9

Things you haven't discussed with him yet

If there's something you need to tell him — like, that he needs to try harder to find a full-time job or that you think he drinks too much — certainly, don't tell your friends first.

10

That terrible gift he bought you

So he bought you a vacuum for Valentine's Day — he heard you mention to your mom that you wanted one and he had the best intentions. Shy away from telling embarrassing stories about him that your girlfriends will never forget.

How to deal with bad gifts from boyfriends >>

11

That he is now your best friend

5 Totally acceptable reasons to eat a chocolate cupcake

Woman looking at cupcakes

You just started a diet and you've been doing great. But suddently, you find yourself incredibly tempted by leftover cake and you start going back and forth in your head about indulging. Finally, you cave.

But not only do you have a small piece of that cake, you devour the whole thing. After just a bite, you already felt like you ruined the day, so why not keep eating?

This is the dieter's biggest pitfall. One of the best ways to prevent this is by scheduling cheat days; so yes, you can have your cake and eat it too sometimes, pun intended.

1

It's not a diet; it's a lifestyle change

If you're on a diet short-term, expect your results to be short-lived. David Garner, Ph. D., explains that diet programs tend to only be successful for a brief period; eventually, when you're off the diet, the weight will likely be regained. Thus, it is important to plan your diet realistically. Are you willing to eat this way for the rest of your life? I don't know about you, but there's no way I could commit to life without cupcakes, or whatever your guilty pleasure may be. By incorporating cheat days into your diet, you are more likely to keep it up in the long term.

So eat a cupcake.

2

It's just plain healthy, kind of

Eat a cupcake, and...

  • Decrease your risk for stroke. According to a Swedish study, women who consumed more than two chocolate bars per week demonstrated a 20 percent decrease in likelihood for a stroke.
  • Lower your blood pressure and decrease your risk for diabetes. That's right. Studies show that regular chocolate consumption increases your sensitivity to insulin.
  • Be happier. Chocolate stimulates the production of endorphins, automatically boosting your mood.

So eat a cupcake.

3

It has less calories than a muffin

At first glance, most people would choose the muffin for health and the cupcake for taste. Let's take a step back and look at the big picture, though. Your typical store-bought, healthy-seeming muffin is 511 calories. That's already more than one-quarter of your daily recommended caloric intake, and it's probably only part of your breakfast. Your average bakery-bought cupcake contains a mere 356 calories. Although it is likely that the cupcake was a bit smaller than the muffin, it tastes better and, if chocolate, contains fiber, which will keep you fuller longer.

So eat a cupcake.

4

It's boosts your metabolism

After cutting calories, your body starts holding onto fat as a survival mechanism. This is because leptin, a hormone that controls hunger and body fat, drops along with those calories. By having cheat days here and there, these levels will rise again, thus boosting your metabolism and stopping that body fat accumulation. Basically, by eating a lot of calories every once in a while, you are telling your body that food is not scarce and it does not have to try to hold on to fat.

So eat a cupcake.

5

Because cheating is unavoidable

When it comes to cheating, remember the 80/20 rule. Dr. Douglas Kalman explains that people will only follow a very strict diet about 80 percent of the time. The other 20 percent of the time will inevitably be spent eating otherwise off-limits foods. Knowing that it is near impossible to follow a strict diet 100 percent of the time means we have to be smart about our cheating. If cheat days are planned, you are more likely to remain in control of your diet. If it is not planned but still happens, which Kalman believes is inevitable, you are more likely to quit your diet altogether.

So eat a cupcake.

INTERVIEW: Kathryn Hahn on "hot, janitor's-closet sex" with Jason Bateman

In Bad Words, Jason Bateman plays Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old jerk who's not above stealing a spelling bee from a group of earnest schoolchildren when he finds a loophole in the rules.

This is what Jason Bateman looks like now >>

Kathryn Hahn plays Jenny, a reporter covering the spelling bee that has parents and educators outraged. But Jenny is a piece of work herself, with a strange style one could call dirty laundry chic.

We asked Hahn to tell us a little about her character in regard to her inappropriate relationship with the cruel Guy Trilby.

"Jenny is a little bit of a glutton for punishment. She also has just bad taste in men." Well, who hasn't been there?

About Jenny's quirky style, she said, "I love that she's got such a sense of authenticity that's herself. She's got a look."

Jenny also had a peculiar sex-etiquette when she bedded Guy in the janitor's closet he was forced to sleep in. She insisted that he not look at her. We asked Hahn what that was all about.

"I think there's such shame in what she's doing, she knows that it's just the worst, but she cannot help herself. So if he were to look her in the eye, it would just make it real. Although we were laughing before that the end of the sentence could be 'Don't look at me — look at me!'" Said Hahn in her most seductive voice.

Cameron Diaz drives bizarre sex scene in The Counselor >>

She also admitted that Jenny takes her glasses off for sex to make things "just a little bit blurry."

Besides studying at the Yale School of Drama, we asked Hahn where she got her training to play such twisted and funny characters. She said her training came from her own upbringing.

"I grew up with two brothers and my parents are wickedly funny. So if you didn't keep up, you got slaughtered. We played rough."

We think it paid off. Watch our video to find out who Hahn considers her "girl crush."

INTERVIEW: Jolie Kerr's My Boyfriend Barfed in My Handbag is a dirty girl’s bible

My Boyfriend Barfed in my Handbag by Jolie Kerr

"I woke up — chocolate just everywhere," says Jolie Kerr. "At least I wasn't smoking a cigarette in bed! But what was I thinking?"

Jolie Kerr is the author of the hit column "Ask a Clean Person." She has been writing the column for three years and has a huge following of fellow Clean People — and dirty people, too.

Her book takes the column into more depth. It's not just Q&A anymore; Kerr gets into detail and does her best to save your day.

Of course, Kerr has a clean house. "It's a control mechanism," she says. "If things are out of order, I feel out of order." However, she's not here to moralize or force her cleanliness on you. Just because she eats nachos with a fork and knife doesn't mean you have to, too.

New survey shows housecleaning has positive romantic effects >>

Kerr is a huge fan of Martha Stewart. (What Clean Person isn't?) But, according to Kerr, "I think Martha enjoys making people feel bad. I don't want people to read my book and feel dirty or like they're a failure!" Instead, she hopes her book can calm the worried cleaner. When disaster strikes, you will be ready.

She is not a formally trained Clean Person. She did not attend Clean Person University. Instead, she's become an expert through trial and error. She says, "I don't always have the answers, and I have to do research. I'll never know everything, but I can always learn something new."

She thinks learning is important in the world of clean. She believes most people hate cleaning because they aren't confident in what they're doing.

Her book, My Boyfriend Barfed in my Handbag… and Other Things You Can't Ask Martha, is on bookshelves now. In it, Kerr tackles everything from floors to wedding emergencies to laundry to… the Jizzcliner?

Savvy cleaning strategies when you love to entertain >>

"That was the most infamous question I've ever gotten!" says Kerr. "A girl was moving in with her boyfriend, and the only issue she had was with his hunter green La-Z-Boy, the arms of which were covered in old semen stains! How did she clean it? OxiClean, of course. But I don't think anyone can ever top that story."

And that's the point of the book. The world is a dirty place, and we can't always call our mothers to ask about, well, semen. Kerr's book is open, honest and funny — and incredibly useful to modern women.

She does not want readers to take things too seriously. "I want people to have a sense of humor when things go wrong," she says. "Life is hard enough. I'm not here to make it any harder. I'm here to make it better."

INTERVIEW: Will you be offended by Bad Words? Jason Bateman thinks so

$
0

In Bad Words, Jason Bateman is obnoxious, manipulative and dishonest and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Not only does he star in the comedy, he also directs it (his feature debut) from a screenplay written by Andrew Dodge. SheKnows recently spoke to the jack-of-all-trades about his aggressive new role.

This is what Jason Bateman looks like now >>

Bad Words centers on a 40-something named Guy, who decides to hijack the National Quill Spelling Bee. The competition is geared towards kids in middle school, but Guy finds a loophole and decides to cause trouble for his fellow contestants. In the film, Bateman has his choice of interesting words to use during and outside of the spelling bee.

Tina Fey and Jason Bateman to play brother and sister >>

He has some memorable and sometimes-raunchy dialogue. "The character says a lot of things that are kind of spicy. No pun intended," Bateman tells SheKnows. "We just had to try to make sure that the audience wouldn't be too offended because hopefully they don't blame my character for saying certain stuff because they start to empathize with what's going on in his life."

Favorite outtakes from Emmy-nominated actors >>

With a cast that includes Kathryn Hahn, Allison Janney and Ben Falcone, there was no shortage of laughs. Bateman had a hard time naming his favorite moments during the shoot. But he does remember the ones that were unintentionally hilarious.

"It was pretty funny having those sex scenes with Kathryn," he reveals. "We're pretty good friends. That gets uncomfortable and it's pretty technical doing a sex scene. You've gotta make sure you don't shadow the other person and you kiss the right side as much as you kiss the left side so that the camera can see them and also see you. It's just a bunch of stuff. And when you're also saying funny things, you don't want the other person laughing, but you want to say it as funny as possible."

Find out more about the film and Bateman's behind-the-scenes antics in our interview above.

Bad Words opens in select theaters March 14 and expands March 21 and 28.

Khloé Kardashian & Lamar Odom burgled by his drug dealer?

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom house possibly robbed by drug dealers

The plot thickens! Khloé Kardashian and Lamar Odom's former seven-bedroom love nest in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, was found burglarized on Monday around 4 p.m., and the thieves managed to get away with $250,000 worth of valuables!

It is truly an unpleasant experience to have to go through a burglary, and the reality TV star is determined to get to the bottom of it.

According to TMZ, Kardashian was previously convinced the robbery must have been an inside job because there were no signs of forced entry, thus someone may have had access to the house.

In fact, she was so convinced it was an inside job that she even requested all those who had access to her lavish home to take a lie detector test!

Although, as it turns out, that may not be necessary, because according to TMZ, the suspected villain in this story is Kardashian's ex-husband's drug dealers.

Why? Well, apparently, the basketball player still owes his dealers for unpaid drugs! Odom is said to still owe one drug dealer $15,000 and another one $40,000, and no doubt these are not the type of people you want to be messing with!

Odom is currently in Spain playing in the European basketball league and trying to revive his career, and there are reports that the drug dealers in question are very unhappy that he has not settled his debts — so unhappy, in fact, that they have allegedly been texting him and threatening his safety.

According to TVNZ, police are still investigating the crime, which Kardashian and her momager Kris Jenner discovered on Monday night when they were getting the property ready for its new owners.

If this robbery is about Odom's drug dealers getting revenge, let's hope he sorts his issues out with them soon before this story takes a nastier turn.

Aww! Angelina Jolie's Maleficent costume made son Pax cry!

Angelina Jolie's role as Maleficent even scared her own kids

Angelina Jolie is one of Hollywood's hottest stars, and so her transformation in the Disney thriller Maleficent has been rather creepy. So creepy, in fact, that she even scared her own children, and other children would not even come near her during filming!

According to Us Weekly, in the March issue of Entertainment Weekly, the star revealed why her daughter Vivienne, 5, was cast as Princess Aurora in the upcoming thriller Maleficent.

"We think it's fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors. That's not our goal for Brad [Pitt] and I at all. But the other 3-and 4-year-old [performers] wouldn't come near me. It had to be a child that liked me and wasn't afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws. So it had to be Viv."

However, whilst the mom of six's daughter may not have been afraid of her, one of her other children certainly was! Jolie revealed that her second oldest child, Pax, 10, was very upset when he first saw her in her scary fantasy costume.

Jolie revealed, "When Pax saw me for the first time, he ran away and got upset — and I thought he was kidding, so I was pretending to chase him until I actually found him crying. I had to take off pieces [of the makeup] in front of him to show him it was all fake and not freak out so much."

Many fans thought Jolie would be spectacular as the horned villain, and she confessed with a laugh, "It is really funny when people say you'd be obvious for a great villain."

However, when it comes to children, no one really likes the villain in Disney movies, and the Salt actress' own kids really felt no different. When her brood of six — Maddox, 12, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 7, Vivienne and Knox, 5, whom she shares with her beau Brad Pitt — tried to persuade her not to take the role, it took some serious parenting to try and make them change their minds.

"I said, 'Let me tell you the real story but you can't tell anybody. So this was my test too, like any parent. The next day, I heard Shiloh getting into a fight with another kid, defending Maleficent, saying, 'You don't understand her!' They got into a bit of an argument and I thought, that's the reason to do the film."

At least Jolie's children listen to her, but let's hope she has not destroyed herself for children across the globe when they associate her with the evil Disney villain!

Good sports for preschoolers

Toddler playing football | Sheknows.com

Ever wonder what types of sports are best for the preschool aged children? These sports are the best bets for your little go-getter.

Team and non-team sports for tykes

Kids love sports and the physical activity is an excellent routine to get started early on in life, but some types of sports are better suited to some kids — and their personalities — than others. This roundup of sports includes both team and non-team athletic activities for the preschooler in your life.

Team sport favorites

"Team sports build skills such as cooperation, mutual respect and discipline."

If you’re hoping to get your child going in a team sport, finding a non-competitive program for your preschooler is the way to go. The low-pressure environment focuses on teaching skills to kids as opposed to playing the best kids to get the highest score. Team sports are excellent for this age group, according to Michaela Powers, lead teacher and coach at Kidville Wellesley, because team sports, such as soccer and basketball, bestow unique benefits to this age group in particular. “Aside from honing their gross motor skills and physical coordination and encouraging physical activity, team sports build skills such as cooperation, mutual respect and discipline, which are foundational to later physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development,” she explains. “Essentially, these skills propel them for school readiness.”

She also notes that when children go from 2 to 3 years old, their capacity for negotiation, problem solving and perspective taking increases quite a bit. “By building up these skills through a non-competitive atmosphere, our coaches at Kidville have even seen firsthand how engagement with sports generalizes to children's outcomes across other domains (music, art), even at this early age,” she explains.

Individual sport favorites

There are other non-team sports that are terrific for preschoolers. Gymnastics is a popular choice because although you are in a class with others, the experience for young children is strictly non-competitive and you work on your own individual skillsets. Gymnastics is great for flexibility, building muscle and learning balance.Young boy martial artist | Sheknows.com

Katie, who lives in Ohio, enrolled her 4-year-old recently in gymnastics classes and loves what it’s done for him. “When Jack was born, I felt like we needed something to do together just me and him,” she explains. “The parent-child classes for him were OK, but once he went to teacher-led [classes], I watched him blossom. I found that he learned how to communicate with other kids and adults. The teachers embrace his personality, recognize his fears and push him to keep trying new things. It has been worth every penny.”

Sarah, mom of two, also found that enrolling her 4-year-old son in a sports class really helped in ways that she hadn’t necessarily expected. “We chose a martial arts class because somehow everything in our house turns into a weapon,” she says. “It is good for him to understand that weapons can hurt, how to handle them and that his hands and feet are weapons, too. We like the mixture of physical exertion and discipline he gets in martial arts.”

Many sports programs will allow you to try a class out for free or at least sit in on one, so you can get a real feel for how the instructors and coaches interact with the kids and what’s expected of them. Others have a refund policy if you enroll and your child doesn’t do well. Finding a good class or team sport can be an excellent experience for your little one and can lead to a lifetime of love for exercise and fun.

Another Kardashian crime — Kourtney left feeling violated

The Kardashian clan is seriously having some bad luck!

First, Khloé and her soon-to-be ex-husband Lamar Odom's former love nest in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, was discovered robbed on Monday and the thieves managed to get away with $250,000 worth of valuables, and now Kourtney is having the same bad luck as her sister!

According to reports, the reality TV star had $50,000 in cash taken from her Calabasas home in Los Angeles last month. Let's hope the sisters recognize the pattern and the fact that they need to tighten up on security! Regardless, it is never a nice situation to be in, and Kourtney is said to be feeling very upset about the entire situation.

A source at Us Weekly said, "It's so sad. She feels so violated and is freaked out."

To make matters worse for the mom of two — who has a son Mason, 4, and daughter Penelope, 19 months — she believes the crime was an inside job. According to TMZ, police believe that both her burglary and the robbery that occurred at her younger sister Khloé's home are connected because the pair work with so many of the same people.

Khloé is said to be out for vengeance and has reportedly ordered lie detector tests for all those who had access to her home because there were no signs of a break-in!

However, recent reports have said that Odom's drug dealers could be to blame for the missing goods at his former home because he apparently still has not settled his debts with two major suppliers.

So why did Kourtney have so much cash on her in the first place? Apparently, she made an appearance and was paid in cash, a whopping $50,000! The money was allegedly left in a safe place in her home for several days, but when the Kourtney and Kim Take New York star finally decided it was time to take it to the bank, she discovered it was missing.

Could the Kardashian sisters just be involved in a string of bad luck? Or is someone out to get revenge?

How yoga can make you a better parent

Mother and daughter practicing yoga | Sheknows.com

Put more zen in your parenting

As I navigate the sometimes treacherous waters of motherhood, I am often looking for a place of both contentment and stability. I often wonder, how can I push myself to be a better mom while at the same time letting go and enjoying peace with the way things are? In my experience, the practice of yoga has been both freeing and grounding.

The challenges of parenthood

While children bring endless love and joy, they also present us with some life’s toughest challenges. They test our patience, require boundless energy and severely limit our personal space (wait, what’s that again?). They are often to blame for our groggy heads, tired arms and empty wallets, but we love them more than life itself — they are our babies after all. To say this parenting jam is easy would be the biggest lie ever told. It feels like a never-ending test, one we are not always on the winning side of, no matter how hard we try. In fact, if you’re not interested in failing and failing often, you’re surely in the wrong game. It’s just par for the course in these digs.

"We put in so much as parents. We lay it all on the line, give our bodies, our minds and our hearts all to someone else."

I understand the pressure quite well. As soon as my daughter was born, I wanted to be present for her. It was like I had my arms filled with mounds of junk and dropped it all at once, just let it all fall in a flash to be her mother. Everything else was trivial. I had never wanted to do something so well, so seamlessly, before in my life. No doubt this is true for many parents because the stakes are high. We know there is more value in our time, our efforts and our words than there has ever been. We are suddenly in demand, needed on a minute-by-minute basis. So, we try and we stress and we have to remind ourselves to stop and smell the daisies.

We put in so much as parents. We lay it all on the line, give our bodies, our minds and our hearts all to someone else. We must find a place to release and we must do so often. We must also make space for ourselves somewhere in the messiness of parenting — but how?

Look for the effort and ease

In my yoga classes, one of my favorite concepts to share with my students is called sukkha-stira. Sukkha refers to effort and stira, ease. As I instruct students to find sukkha-stira, what I’m referring to is a kind of balance. There is labor, but also a place of contentment and release within the pose. Finding this place, both on and off the mat, is what took my yoga practice to a new level and what called me to teach. Know that parenting is not all about our efforts — that sometimes it is merely about the joy, the simplicity, the ease.

Learn to let go

You have to remember that you can’t be everything to everyone all of the time and there are things that you simply can’t control. Do what you can and let go of the rest. Life will go on if you have a bad day or things so awry. What’s far more influential than our failures is our ability to bounce back. You are allowed to let it all fall apart sometimes. I promise, nothing will break and if it does, there’s always duct tape.

Believe you are who you're meant to be

We all have self-doubt, especially when it comes to parenting. We can’t always see just how valuable we are to our kids. If we knew how much they loved us, just wanted to be close to us (okay, on top of us), we’d just be smiling from ear-to-ear all of the time. But, it gets foggy sometimes and hard to recognize through the tears and the screaming and the crying tantrums when minutes feel like hours. Know that you are exactly the parent your child needs you to be already. No doubt, they already believe this to be true.

Admit faults easily and often

It’s okay because according to yogic philosophy, you are completely perfect in your imperfections. When you do wrong, lose your temper or are quick with your actions or your words, apologize and then rid yourself of the guilt. Children need to hear that their parents are not perfect and they should hear it often. They will be more likely to apologize themselves later in life if they realize mistakes are a normal and healthy part of life. So admit your faults, but don’t worry too much about them. There will be lots, lots, lots more where they came from and besides, they make you who you are.

Be present

Sometimes we get hung up on always having the answers, but most times our kids need something else — our simple presence. When you don’t have all of the answers, know that it’s okay to just listen and listen well. Being present, not worrying about what to say or do, but just being there is often enough.

Breathe

When we become tense our breath becomes rapid and shallow. When all else fails, remember to breathe. The power of slow, deep breathing is a healing and beautiful act. Sometimes the first step to finding that contentment is to simply follow the breath.

VIDEO: Prince debuts new song, says hands off the hair

The Arsenio Hall Show got extra funky on Wednesday night when Prince took the stage for killer performances and an amusing interview.

With the exception of his opening monologue, Hall devoted his entire show to Prince, including multiple performances and interviews where he received short but funny answers, showing a comfortable and un-self-conscious side to the normally super serious musician.

Prince still jealous of Madonna, 20+ years later >>

Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL, accompanied by an 11-piece horn section, performed the Purple One's new song "FUNKROLL" along with a couple of lesser-known fan faves "Mutiny" and "She's Always in My Hair" — which, by the way, is a huge pet peeve of the artist.

Watch Prince perform "She's Always in My Hair"

The star told Hall that "strangers touching my hair" is his No. 1 annoyance. "I was at an Oscars party and people kept bumping into me," he said. "And it always seems to be dudes."

But if you're lucky enough to chill with Prince and are at his house for breakfast (like in the hilarious Charlie Murphy story on Chappelle's Show) you will definitely be well-fed. Turns out, the star loves to cook, and he has a specialty: omelets.

"All my friends have high cholesterol," he joked.

Watch Prince chat with the audience

The 2013 Billboard Music Awards Icon winner also shared how this musical genius got into the music industry in the first place. Turns out, everything else just bored him. While looking for a job as a broke teenager, he said, "I got the Yellow Pages out and I didn't find anything I wanted to do, so I decided I was going to become a musician and win at it," he said. But in an alternate life, he'd "want to teach in some capacity."

Prince teaching math, can you imagine? Funky math.

When your baby daddy is a terrible parent

Toddler clinging to mother's legs | Sheknows.com

How to cope and care

Just because he provided sperm doesn't mean he's any good at parenting. Here are tips for how to deal with a well-intentioned (or not) baby daddy who is wrecking the whole parenting gig.

Ah, baby daddies. You can't live with them, and you can't make babies without them. Whether you're still romantically linked with the father of your child or not, he's an important part of your kid's upbringing. We spoke with marriage and family therapist Dr. David Simonsen to hear his tips for troubleshooting your co-parenting concerns when your baby daddy's choices veer from annoying into terrible.

First of all, let's define "terrible"

"Anything that endangers the safety of your child deserves intervention."

Sorry, moms — even if you have ongoing parenting disagreements with the father of your child, that doesn't necessarily make him a terrible parent. Disagreements about the ins and outs of parenting are just par for the course. For example, conflicts about bedtime, food choices and free time call for communication and compromise, because they're questions of preference rather than safety.

Some disagreements, however, truly surface from terrible parenting. "If the father of your child is doing something that could be harmful in the long-term, it definitely needs to be addressed," said Dr. Simonsen. Anything that endangers the safety of your child deserves intervention because it is, in fact, terrible parenting.

How to triage your concerns

According to Dr. Simonsen, all parenting concerns need to be looked at in light of danger to your child. Danger, moreover, encompasses more than just physical safety concerns. If your child's father puts your child in any of the following types of danger, you need to intervene.

  • Physical danger. If your child's father is physically abusive with his discipline or neglectful of your child's physical safety, you need to intervene swiftly and forcefully. Placing your child in physical danger is terrible parenting and requires quick action.
  • Mental and emotional danger. An emotionally-abusive father can also cause long-term damage to your child. If you've seen evidence of manipulation, name-calling or any type of threatening, then this behavior also calls for intervention.
  • Sexual danger. Of course, sexual abuse needs intervention and a revocation of the father's parental rights. But sexual danger is more nuanced than sexual abuse. If Dad has a succession of women circulating through his house, has multiple affairs or uses your kid as a surrogate spouse (inappropriately leaning on your child for emotional support), this can cause emotional and sexual turmoil for your child.

If your child's father makes choices that are more annoying than dangerous, then your approach needs to be different. Spend some time thinking about whether or not you're scared for your child's safety prior to intervening.

Ideas for troubleshooting bad parenting

Intervention for terrible parenting will look different between parents and scenarios. Once you're triaged your parenting concern, consider the following options.

  • Old-fashioned communication. Dr. Simonsen suggests basic communication for the parenting questions that are annoying rather than dangerous. "So many things grow and die on the issue of communication," said Simonsen. "Parenting issues will never be addressed adequately until mom and dad, regardless of their relationship, can figure out how to communicate." He suggests developing a parenting plan with a marriage and family therapist if communication around annoying concerns seems impossible.
  • Tapping friends and family. If your child's father is humble and teachable, Dr. Simonsen suggested talking to a mutual friend or family member about your concerns. Unfortunately, moms sometimes find that dads don't take their concerns seriously until they hear it from another person. He suggested finding someone that your child's father trusts, and asking that person to speak on your behalf.
  • Legal involvement. "While not ideal, attorneys and a court-ordered parenting plan can take care of your concerns," said Simonsen. "The safety of the child takes priority over the feelings of parents." With the help of an attorney, you can craft a parenting plan and custody arrangement that specifies the types of parenting behaviors that will and will not occur with your child. You can also push for sole custody if you feel that your child is in ongoing danger.

The Vampire Diaries review: Katherine doesn't go gently

The gang confronts Katherine in The Vampire Diaries

Boys and girls, the moment we've all been waiting for on The Vampire Diaries has finally arrived. Adieu, Katherine, adieu.

But we'll get to Katherine (Nina Dobrev) in a second.

First, we have to say goodbye to someone we were actually sad to see leave the show. But we're happy we're sad, if that makes sense? Nadia dies tonight from the werewolf bite after Katherine fails to get a cure. It was the perfect ending to her character arch, and she didn't overstay her welcome on the show. We also love that Katherine essentially sacrifices herself by returning to the Salvatore house to be at Nadia's side as she passed on. It was a really beautiful moment on the show.

Fantasy gets another year! The CW announces early renewals >>

And then there's Katherine, who, of course, doesn't leave without a parting gift. After Nadia dies, Katherine makes some grand "apologies" to the gang. (We use the quotes because she really just gives herself credit for everything good in their lives — namely turning the majority of them into vampires.) In the end, Stefan (Paul Wesley) is the one to stab her. She romanticizes the moment with some words about their love story but, at the end of the day, we're all just ready to see her disappear.

And disappear she does. Except to Bonnie. Katherine has another bout of taunts for her as well as she passes over, including a juicy little tidbit of information that she injected Elena's (Nina Dobrev) body with Dr. Wes' vampire craving concoction.

Camera assistant Sarah Jones killed by train while filming >>

Just when we're so furious we wish we could see Katherine killed again, something even better happens. A wind sweeps through the church, and Katherine is pulled away by a dark force Bonnie has never seen before.

Can you say mystical hell? Just when Katherine thinks she's one upped the gang for good, she's the one who gets a nasty surprise. Have fun with that eternity of darkness! We can't even be upset because, well, she definitely brought it on herself.

Meanwhile, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has a feisty heart to heart with Tyler before biting him and escaping his cell. Damon says he realizes things with Elena are probably over despite the fact that the truth about Katherine has been revealed. He asks Tyler about New Orleans this time of year as an option for his getaway. Is Damon heading to The Originals?! Now that would be interesting.

The Vampire Diaries casts two new faces: Will they live? >>

Then, Damon ends his revengenda with a final kill. He finds Dr. Wes and does a little experimenting of his own by first punching a hole in the good doctor's gut, followed by a little eye removal surgery. While Wes is awake. And you'd better believe without any pain medication. Though, in the world of The Vampire Diaries, hard confirmation is always needed when a character dies — we're gonna go ahead and say the doctor is out.

But, alas, it looks like Damon has decided to stick around Mystic Falls for a while longer. With Elena on the up and up, Damon realizes that whether or not she'll have him back, he's going to tell her the truth. He doesn't want to end up like Katherine, running for his life and alone.

Elena's eyes flutter open, and she says a sweet hello to Damon. Too bad he doesn't realize that in a quick minute, she'll be going for his jugular.

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Nancy O'Dell

Nancy O'Dell wearing a ponytail

Nancy O'Dell always looks camera-ready on Entertainment Tonight, but the TV host also looks pretty fab in her time off and at events. Here, I spied Nancy rocking a pretty perky ponytail that's giving me a serious case of hair envy! I asked Shannon Walsh, stylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, how we can all recreate the look at home. Here's what she had to say!

You will need: Blow dryer, volumizing mousse/spray, 1.5-2-inch curling iron, sectioning clips, elastics, bobby pins and hairspray

Get the look

  1. Start off by putting a volumizing mousse or spray at the root on damp hair.
  2. I am a firm believer of drying your hair upside down to get maximum volume.
  3. Once your hair is completely dry, section hair into 3 big sections and clip out of the way. (Mohawk, above the ear and right above the neck)
  4. Begin at the bottom section, and take a 1.5-inch curling iron and curl your hair.
  5. Curl all your hair working up to the mohawk section and once you reach that, try to curl all your hair away from your face (think Charlie's Angels).
  6. Once this is all done, spray everything over, and go in with your fingers to loosely "comb" out the curls.
  7. Leaving your bang section out, tie your hair back into a ponytail with an elastic.
  8. Take the fringe section you left out and using your fingers loosely comb the hair back toward the elastic, making sure you do not pull down the volume or curl. Bobby pin in place.
