How Your Period Changes After Chemo

When many people think of cancer, there are a few images that come to mind: hair loss, exhaustion and the vision of both men and women, needle in their arms, hooked up to a machine administering some of the strongest drugs designed to kill everything in its wake. That's chemotherapy.

When you’re diagnosed with cancer of any type, there’s a good chance your team of doctors will recommend some type of chemotherapy. Each type is different — the snowflakes of medicine if you will — and their side effects vary. Some people will experience hair loss, nausea, changes in taste, loss of feeling in their extremities — this list goes on and on. But for people who menstruate, there is a side effect many of us don’t even think about, especially when diagnosed at a younger age.

I was 32 and single when I was diagnosed with breast cancer and was faced with obscene amounts of information. There were surgeries to be scheduled and appointments to be made. Somewhere between my mastectomy and the start of my 12 rounds of chemotherapy, I was asked if I’d like to hear options about freezing my eggs.

“Why would I need to do that?” I asked.

“We can assume that you are premenopausal due to your age,” my oncologist explained. “The chemotherapy could push you into early menopause. It’s not guaranteed, but it’s a possibility. If you’re thinking about having children, you might want to think about freezing your eggs. If you are perimenopausal, which is possible, there’s a greater chance the chemo will speed up the menopause process.”

My head spun. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to keep the plant my ex had given me, let alone have a child at some point, and now there was a chance that I could go into menopause? At 32?

What chemo does to your period

I had never even heard the terms premenopausal and perimenopausal before I had been diagnosed; most young women haven’t. According to Dr. Steve Vasilev, a gynecologic oncologist and medical director of integrative gynecologic oncology at John Wayne Cancer Institute, premenopausal years are the reproductive years before menopause occurs.

"As menopause approaches, increasing symptoms such as hot flashes, irregular periods and vaginal dryness signal perimenopause, meaning your ovaries are starting to fail in terms of producing cyclic estrogen and progesterone," he tells SheKnows. "This usually starts in the mid to late 40s but can start as early as your 30s.”

Oh, great. So in addition to being injected with poison to kill my cancer, there was also a chance that once I completed treatment, my ovaries would be failing and I would be experiencing the same side effects my mother experienced in her 50s.

I wondered what exactly chemo does to a person's body that forces our reproductivity to end.

“Chemotherapy can accelerate ovarian failure and cause menopause after one or more treatments, depending on the combination of chemotherapy that is administered, as some are more toxic to the ovaries and the egg-producing follicles than others," Vasilev explains. "During chemotherapy, normal hormonal cycles are usually altered, which results in irregular periods. In some cases, where the chemotherapy causes complete failure, periods can simply stop and full menopausal symptoms can occur.”

So basically, the stronger the drugs to kill the cancer, the more chance you have to experience early menopause.

Are the changes permanent?

Naturally, my next question was how I'd know if it’s going to be permanent or not. According to Vasilev, whether or not ovarian damage is permanent or not depends on the drugs used, the duration of treatment and how many eggs a person had to begin with.

"The biochemical and metabolic reasons for failure are very diverse, and in most cases, multiple toxicity pathways are in play at the same time," says Vasilev, "so it is hard to avoid at least a temporary loss of ovarian function.”

It was around my second round of chemotherapy when I noticed something was missing on my calendar: those little marks that each of us make each month to track when our periods are set to begin. The chemo had stalled my period and there was nothing I could do but wait and see if it returned once my treatments ended. I didn’t experience many of the side effects that women going through menopause experience, but to be honest, I was so tired most of the time, even if I had, I probably slept through them.

I completed six rounds of an insanely strong chemo cocktail of three different drugs in April of 2011. Sometime in June, as I was sitting in yet another doctor’s office, I felt a stabbing pain in my lower back and was extremely nauseous. "The cancer. It’s back," I convinced myself as I locked myself in the bathroom of the office, dry heaving.

But it wasn’t my cancer that was coming back. It was my period. I felt like an old car that had been started up again after sitting in a garage for some time, slow to start, lurching forward but eventually, street legal once again.

I felt a sense of relief (in addition to the intense cramps). I had no idea if my post-cancer future would include children (spoiler: It does not), but it was nice to know that the option was back on the table. Eight years later, the plant is also still doing great.

RHOBH's Camille Grammer Marries David C. Meyer in Hawaii

From Real Housewife to, well, real-life wife — Camille Grammer just got hitched. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star tied the knot with boyfriend David C. Meyer on Saturday at a private beach club in Hawaii, according to People

“This is my next chapter. I’m so excited to start our life together,” Grammer, 50, told People.

Both of Grammer’s children (with ex-husband Kelsey Grammer) took part in the ceremony. Daughter Mason, 16, served as a bridesmaid, while son Jude, 14, walked Grammer down the aisle. So sweet!

Grammer and Meyer dated for more than a year before getting engaged in October 2017. They met in Malibu, where he resides. At the time of the engagement, a source reportedly close to the couple told People, “They’re just in love. There’s a casualness and easiness to their relationship. They’re a really happy, kind couple. He really loves her for her.

Naturally, Grammer had some of her RHOBH ladies there to share in her big day.  Castmate Kyle Richards served as a bridesmaid in the Hawaiian-inspired outdoor nuptials, while fellow Housewives Teddi Mellencamp, Dorit Kemsley and Lisa Rinna attended as guests.

On Friday, presumably at the rehearsal dinner, Richards posted a photo of the women — with the beautiful bride to be — standing poolside, adorned with leis.

On Saturday, she posted a photo of the group sans Grammer with the wedding tent (and a rainbow, to boot!) in the background.

Several of Grammer’s other Housewives castmates couldn’t attend. Erika Jayne, who is currently on tour, had a performance in Chicago on Sunday. Denise Richards is on location in Connecticut filming a project with former Starship Troopers co-star Patrick Muldoon.

As for fellow Housewife and fan favorite Lisa Vanderpump, a reason for her absence wasn’t immediately clear. However, Grammer told People she “understands” and respects Vanderpump’s decision, saying, “Lisa was very apologetic about it.”

Grammer, a former model, starred on RHOBH for the first two seasons before taking on a guest role in subsequent years.

Selma Blair took to Instagram on Saturday to share an emotional update about her health: In August, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The actor credited her new role on the upcoming Netflix series Another Life with her decision to share her diagnosis.

“I was in this wardrobe fitting two days ago. And I am in the deepest gratitude. So profound it is, I have decided to share,” Blair wrote. “The brilliant costumer #Allisaswanson not only designs the pieces #harperglass will wear on this new #Netflix show, but she carefully gets my legs in my pants, pulls my tops over my head, buttons my coats and offers her shoulder to steady myself.”

Blair went on to clarify, “I have #multiplesclerosis. I am in an exacerbation. By the grace of the lord, and will power and the understanding producers at Netflix, I have a job. A wonderful job. I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it.”

She revealed that her exact diagnosis time was 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 and that she received it from Dr. Jason Berkley, the brother of actress Elizabeth Berkley (of Saved By the Bell fame).

In addition to thanking Elizabeth for pressuring her to seek help, Blair thanked famous friends Jaime King, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Tara Subkoff for being constant sources of support in the time since she learned of her MS.

In sharing her news, Blair wrote, she hoped to provide a source of hope and comfort for other people who may have been recently diagnosed.

“You can’t get help unless you ask. It can be overwhelming in the beginning. You want to sleep. You always want to sleep... But I am a forthcoming person and I want my life to be full somehow. I want to play with my son again. I want to walk down the street and ride my horse. I have MS and I am ok. But if you see me, dropping crap all over the street, feel free to help me pick it up. It takes a whole day for me alone. Thank you and may we all know good days among the challenges,” she wrote.

In closing, Blair speculated that she likely had this disease, undiagnosed, for 15 years.

According to the National MS Society, multiple sclerosis is a “chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system” that is thought to be immune-mediated (the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy CNS tissue).

Although there is no cure for MS, treatment has improved greatly in recent years, and the outlook for people with MS is much better than it once was.

Matthew Broderick Is Joining The Conners in a Romantic Role

Fast on the heels of last week’s premiere of ABC’s The Conners, fans of the spinoff already have something new to be excited about: Matthew Broderick will soon be making an appearance on the show, according to his rep.

USA Today reported that “There Won’t Be Blood” will air on Oct. 30. In the episode, Broderick is expected to play Peter, a love interest for Jackie (Laurie Metcalf).

More: 5 Ways The Conners Is Different From Roseanne

Given that the episode airs Halloween week and is Halloween-themed, it wouldn’t be surprising if some zany shenanigans between the two were involved. The IMDb plot summary for the episode reads, “Jackie introduces someone new to the family at the Halloween party and insists that Dan vet him, only to immediately wish that she hadn’t.”

Yes, please! Broderick’s comedic brilliance will undoubtedly pair well with John Goodman and the gang. Sadly, however, it appears that Broderick’s role will be relegated to the one episode, at least for now.

More: Roseanne's Fate on The Conners Is Confirmed

With four movies and one television show in various stages of production, Broderick’s schedule is understandably full. The two-time Tony winner will voice a character in Paramount’s upcoming animated film Wonder Park opposite Jennifer Garner and will star in the Tribeca Film Festival audience favorite To Dust

On the upcoming third season of FX’s Better Things, Broderick will play a counselor opposite Emmy-nominated lead Pamela Adlon. And, in his first regular TV series role, he will star in Netflix’s upcoming high school apocalypse dramedy Daybreak as the school principal.

Longtime Broderick fans will surely note that Daybreak puts the actor back in the setting that first launched him to fame: a high school, much like the one he inhabited (or, rather, ditched) in the 1986 cult classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

So, who knows? Should The Conners continue to do well, perhaps Broderick will reappear for a future arc once a break in his busy schedule opens up.

Based on its early numbers, the Roseanne reboot's spinoff should be around a while — the premiere brought in 10.5 million viewers, becoming the biggest same-day premiere for a new show this season.

Meghan Markle Is Cutting Back on Royal Tour Events With Prince Harry

It's been a busy time for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, with their 16-day royal tour across Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand in addition to the couple announcing Meghan's pregnancy. They certainly have a lot on their plates, but even more so for Meghan (known before her marriage as Meghan Markle), who appears to be needing rest now that she's expecting her first child with Prince Harry.

On Sunday, Reuters reported (via The New York Times) Kensington Palace released a statement to Australia's SBS news, which revealed Meghan is cutting back on her royal tour events.

"After a busy program, the Duke and Duchess have decided to cut back The Duchess's schedule slightly for the next couple of days, ahead of the final week-and-a-half of the tour," the palace's statement read.

More: Prince Harry Discusses Meghan Markle's Pregnancy in the Most Bashful Way

On Friday, Sky News reported Meghan had revealed she's already feeling the effects of pregnancy. According to an Australia local, Charlotte Waverly, who spoke with the duchess, "Meghan told me that pregnancy was like having jet lag. She said she was up at 4.30 a.m. this morning doing yoga in her room as she couldn't sleep."

On Oct. 15, People also reported a royal source dished that Meghan had her 12-week ultrasound and was "feeling well."

An explanation for Meghan taking a break was not provided by the palace, but there's a good chance she's simply focusing on her health in addition to her child's well-being. Her royal tour with Harry is definitely a busy one, with a lot of events, speeches and interactions with the public. Really, anyone would need a break.

Just because Meghan is trimming her schedule doesn't mean she won't be seen at all during the remainder of their first tour as husband and wife. Most recently, Meghan was seen performing her royal duties on Fraser Island in Australia on Monday. So she's still around but won't be seen as often as Harry over the next couple of days.

Speaking of the prince, he's continued with the tour as scheduled and is expected to attend events solo whenever Meghan needs rest. For example, he attended the cycling event at the 2018 Invictus Games by himself while Meghan took a break. For those unaware, Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014 as a way to celebrate wounded and recovering service members and veterans.

As of Monday, Meghan and Harry are on Day 7 of their tour, meaning nine days remain. Even though Meghan is taking an understandable break to take care of herself, there are still plenty of wonderful moments to be had with both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

7 Things You Can Do Now to Prepare for Cold & Flu Season

The flu season is basically here already, but that's not the only part of a sad, winterlong tale of potential illnesses. The common cold is also easily passed around during the colder months, and now that you're completely depressed about that, let's instead talk about what we can do now to help alleviate some of that cold-weather distress. Here are a few tips from experts so you can hopefully avoid catching a nasty winter bug.

Get the flu shot

If you haven't gotten a flu vaccine yet, make an appointment to do so today (or check out local walk-in flu shot clinics, which can often be found at pharmacies). While the flu vaccine is not 100 percent effective at preventing influenza, the Centers for Disease Control maintains that it can reduce the risk of catching the flu by 40 to 60 percent.

More: When Is the Best Time to Get a Flu Shot?

Pop some vitamin D

Vitamin D is the vitamin that comes from sun exposure. No, really — it's naturally found in very few foods, so humans manufacture it from ultraviolet rays. That being said, your vitamin D production naturally declines when it gets cold outside because, well, it's cold, and you're usually bundled up when outdoors.

Vitamin D has a ton of uses in the human body, including aiding calcium absorption and boosting your immune system. Also, Dr. Gustavo Ferrer, a pulmonologist and author of Cough Cures, tells SheKnows that vitamin D supplementation can help prevent respiratory tract infections.

Wash your hands all the time

This may seem obvious, but not everybody washes their hands adequately. A quick rinse in water (and nothing else) is definitely not good enough. "Handwashing is like a do-it-yourself vaccine — it involves simple and effective steps you can take to help stay healthy," Ferrer explains.

The CDC says that you should always use clean running water (don't dunk your hands into a sink full of water, in other words), lather with soap and scrub your hands for at least 20 full seconds. Then, rinse well with clean running water. The soap itself doesn't kill the germs — instead, it lifts the nasties from your skin so they can be rinsed down the drain. Finally, dry your hands with a clean towel.

Restock cleaning supplies

"You should restock your pantry with cleaning supplies," Dr. Kristin Dean, a physician and associate medical director at Doctor On Demand, tells SheKnows. "Keeping your door handles, countertops and home clean and disinfected is just as important as washing your hands."

They will also come in handy if someone in your household (or you) comes down with something. You'll already be stocked up and won't have to go to the store, and you'll be glad you thought ahead.

Restock your medicine cabinet

You should also make sure your medicine cabinet is ready in case of illness. "While OTC medicine won’t treat the flu, you should have some staples to help at the first onset of symptoms," Dean explains. "Tylenol, ibuprofen, cough drops and decongestants are all good items to have on hand."

Don't eat out of that doughnut box

If you work somewhere with a communal break room or lunchroom, you've probably grabbed a doughnut or something similar from a box a caring coworker has provided. During the flu season, definitely don't do that, Dr. Kristine Arthur, an internist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center, tells SheKnows, no matter how tasty it looks. "Avoid these at all costs, as they have been exposed to coughs, sneezes and even possible touching," she says.

Avoid people (or at least try)

Influenza and the common cold are spread by other people transmitting their viruses, so if you can stay home 24-7, then you'll be good, right? Well, this isn't likely to happen because people need to go out, get supplies, work and go to school.

Arthur has a few good tips for trying to avoid huge crowds of possibly sick people, especially since viruses spread easily in the air. "When shopping, try to avoid peak busy times when stores are crowded and you are exposed to a higher number of possibly sick shoppers," she suggests. She also mentions that if you have the option to work at home, do it during the cold and flu season. Additionally, avoid handshakes.

Winter is fun, right?

During the winter months, you're typically indoors way more than you'd like and are constantly surrounded by germy people. If you take a few preventative measures (like getting a flu vaccine) and practice good hygiene, you may be able to avoid getting sick at all.

But if you aren't able to avoid it and are feeling rotten, make sure you're stocked up in advance so you don't have to run to the store and expose more people to influenza or whatever germ you can potentially share. The flu is no fun, and colds aren't either, but maybe you can keep those germs at bay and enjoy the cold season as you'd like to.

Fashion & Beauty Secrets Royals Use to Avoid Wardrobe Malfunctions

The British royal family might seem like they live on another planet where the air is cleaner and the clothes are better-fitting, but in reality, they’re people like anyone else. And believe it or not, they even have wardrobe malfunctions — well, they would if it weren’t for their fashion and beauty hacks.

More: Past Outfits Meghan Markle Can’t Wear Anymore Now That She’s Royal

Have you ever wondered why Duchess Meghan (née Markle) of Sussex always looks so put-together? Or why the Duchess of Cambridge's (better known as Kate Middleton) skirt never flies up even in the strongest of breezes? Well, like everything, the royals have a hack for that. Ahead, we’ve collected the little-known fashion and beauty secrets the royals use to avoid wardrobe malfunctions. Find out how they keep calm and collected, even in nature’s most trying situations below.

Wearing bodysuits so skirts don’t fly up

Wearing Bodysuits, So Skirts Don’t Fly Up

To prevent their skirts from flying up in even the strongest winds, royal women such as Kate and Meghan often wear bodysuits underneath their dresses to create static. That way, when a gust of wind comes, their skirts will stick to their bodysuits and stay down.

“Often they wear body suits and clothes that actually increase static so it’s much hard for something to fly up,” Myka Meier, a royal etiquette expert, told The Sun. “So you have an undergarment that is almost like a body suit that is one tactic that is used.”

“Often they wear body suits and clothes that actually increase static so it’s much hard[er] for something to fly up,” Meier said. “So you have an undergarment that is almost like a body suit that is one tactic that is used. If you do not use weights or heavy weighted material, you make sure it will not fly up by wearing under garments that keep the fabrics connect[ed] to your body.”

Wearing shoes a size too big to avoid blisters

Wearing Shoes a Size Too Big to Avoid Blisters

You might have noticed Meghan is often seen with shoes that are too big for her. Well, there’s a reason for that. According to fashion expert Harriet Davey, many celebrities often wear shoes a size or two sizes up to avoid blisters. Also, long periods of standing often cause the feet to swell, so the bigger shoes also work against that.

“Celebs often go a size up, or even two, in the shoe department when they’re at an event or on the red carpet and it’s for one reason we can all relate to — to avoid blisters,” Davey told The Sun. “There’s nothing worse than uncomfortable shoes (we’ve all been there on a night out) and when celebs like Meghan are wearing heels for a long period of time their feet can often swell up.”

Weighing down skirts with small weights

Weighing Down Skirts with Small Weights

Another trick royals use to prevent their skirts from flying is sewing small weights along the hem. Queen Elizabeth is especially a fan of this hack and prefers it over the bodysuit trick. She even sews weights on dresses that aren’t as light so they can hang more evenly. “I just pop a couple of weights into the hemline of her dresses and coats and it makes them hang beautifully. If there is a flap in the coat then I will sew in one on each side of the split to even it up,” Stewart Parvin, Queen Elizabeth’s courtier, told the Daily Mail. “And sometimes if she is wearing a lightweight chiffon skirt I will sew in a smaller lead weight the size of a pea or even a length of chain.”

Wearing stockings with rubber pads

Wearing Stockings with Rubber Pads

As many royal traditionalists know, bare legs are frowned upon in royal circles, which is why many women wear sheer or nude stockings. But also, as many know, tights don’t provide a lot of friction in shoes and can often lead to feet slipping out of them. To prevent this, royals such as Kate purchase specific tights from John Lewis with rubber soles that adhere to the shoe and keep the feet from sliding around according to The Sun.

Using elastic bands to hold hats in place

Using Elastic Bands to Hold Hats in Place

The royals are known for their extravagant hats. But with their size and often offbeat shapes, it’s hard to keep them on, especially when they’re supposed to be worn at off-kilter angles. So the royals came up with a solution: elastic. According to Jill Courtemanche, a custom hatmaker, royals often wear elastic in the same color as their hair to keep their hats from falling off. “Preferably the elastic should be the same color as the wearer’s hair and is worn under the hair at the back, resting below the bump on the back of the head,” Courtemanche told Royal Hats.

Wearing low buns to avoid dents

Wearing Low Buns to Avoid Dents

Meghan gets a lot of flak for her messy buns, but there might be a practical reason behind them. Byrdie U.K. explained that the Duchess of Sussex’s habit of wearing low buns might be to avoid dents and creases that would be created by ponytails or top knots. The messy bun allows Meghan more freedom when styling her naturally curly hair differently at night, so she doesn’t have to wash it again.

“With a full schedule of day and night events, there can’t be much time for Meghan to perform a full hair wash and restyle in between,” Byrdie U.K. reported. “So, unlike a hair-denting ponytail or root-ruffling topknot, a low bun is like a form of damage control. Markle can wear one all day and then quickly unwind it — letting her loose waves fall beyond her shoulders, ready for the evening’s function.”

Wearing hairnets to keep updos in place

Wearing Hairnets to Keep Updos in Place

Not only are hairnets traditional, but they provide a practical purpose to a royal’s look. The cheap accessory, which is a favorite of Kate’s, is often worn in a color similar to the hair and allows the royals to wear tight, neat updos without having to worry about them falling apart.

Using “nude” nail polish to hide chipped nails

Using “Nude” Nail Polish to Hide Chipped Nails

It’s a royal tradition for members to wear natural-looking nail polish colors and avoid bright shades, such as red or yellow. But there might be a reason behind that too. A manicure that matches one’s skin tone makes it harder to tell if a royal’s nails are chipped or not. And though it’s not a foolproof solution, chipped nails with natural-looking polish definitely look better than if the polish were neon.

8 Things We'd Like to See Happen in Midnight, Texas Season 2

Premiering October 2017 on NBC, Midnight, Texas gave viewers a nice sampling of the supernatural life in this small town. Based on the novel of the same name written by Charlaine Harris (if that rings a bell, it's because she also wrote the series True Blood is based on) and featuring a motley crew of psychics, witches, serial killers, vampire coups and ghost possessions, this series has a little bit of everything to scare almost everyone watching. Plus, it helps scratch that spooky itch that fans of shows like American Horror Story are looking for.

More: Fall TV Premiere Dates You Need to Know About

In case you forgot (or you have yet to watch), season one left us pretty scattered. Protagonist Manfred (Francois Arnaud) was possessed by evil to combat a seriously bad demon. Vampire Lemuel (Peter Mensah) and human hitwoman Olivia (Arielle Kebbell) made their relationship official. And, best of all, there was also that earth-saving supernatural ritual between Midnight's resident witch, Fiji (Parisa Fitz-Henley), and her longtime crush, Bobo (Dylan Bruce), which left them on cloud nine — and the rest of the world alive.

So what’s next? With season two rapidly approaching (it arrives on NBC Friday) and the trailer merely teasing what to expect, we're diving in to discuss some of the plot points and character developments we'd like to see.

1. Give us some new supernaturals

We’ve seen our fair share of supernatural creatures on season one, including weretigers, demons and a succubus. But will we find something else even more dangerous? With the introduction of hotel owners Kai and Patience Lucero (Nestor Carbonell and Jamie Ray Newman), it’s clear that there will be bigger mystical presences in the town. Will they be warlocks? Elves? The possibilities are endless — it's Midnight!

2. More were-animals, please

This show is in the same realm as True Blood (more or less), so it’s high time we got to see more of the were community having a little more skin in the game — especially since dear ol’ Rev is a weretiger. In previous iterations of weres, especially as seen on True Blood, we've seen that weres generally move in packs. Will we get a pack making their way into this city of outsiders?

3. Let's see more of the Rev’s backstory

We got a taste of how most of the major players made their way to Midnight, but there’s still a little fog over how the Rev, a lone weretiger, got there. Hopefully we’ll get a little backstory for him — especially since actor Yul Vasquez won’t be a regular this season.

4. Let Fiji keep her new beau

It took an entire season for our virginal Fiji to finally snag her man — and the two even got to hit the sheets in order to save the world! But from the looks of the season two trailer, things won’t be easy for Fiji and Bobo, since there’s apparently a curse on the family where men who fall in love with the women of her line are doomed to die. Yikes! Hopefully, we’ll get a chance to see Fiji and Bobo enjoy a little time with each other and cheat death yet again.

5. Madonna’s secrets should be revealed

Madonna’s (Kellee Stewart) integration into the Midnight community and her reasons for being there were hinted at early on in season one, but there wasn’t much else said about it. What's her deal? Why is she here? Aside from her potential ties to the new hotel owners, we still have so much to learn about this mysterious character.

6. Manfred could up the ante on his powers

When we left off, Manfred got charged up by some truly demonic spirits in order to take on the demon bringing about the apocalypse. That possession has left our boy a little splintered, but did it also bring him some newfound powers we’ll get to see? Here’s to hoping for a powered-up Manny who can truly test himself in season two.

7. A new love interest for Manny, too?

In addition to the Rev taking a bit of a backseat this season, we also know Manny’s love interest, Creek (Sarah Ramos), will also be a bit MIA for season two. Does that mean we'll see another love interest for the demon-possessed Manny? There’s talk that a new girl, Patience, will take a liking to him, but we also learned that a few new, powerful ladies will be coming into town. Will they take up residence in Manny’s heart? If so, this will be an interesting watch.

8. A True Blood crossover

Considering that Charlaine Harris wrote the books on which both of these series were based, it's not entirely out of the question to think about these two worlds existing in the same extended universe. While there are no hints yet that a crossover would happen, the idea of seeing familiar True Blood faces like Sookie Stackhouse or Hoyt Fortenberry is pretty dang exciting.

4 Things Your Toddler Should be Learning at Day Care

Access to quality early childcare is without a doubt essential. Unfortunately, parents are facing a fairly significant care gap. According to a survey released by NPR along with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, for every three families seeking early childcare nationwide, only one spot is available.

And once parents do find that coveted spot, tuition for day care and preschool still comes at outrageous costs. Another NPR report states that in some regions, it reaches about 40 percent of a family’s annual income.

According research done by the Pew Research Center on working moms, the good news is that over the last 20 years, more and more women have felt empowered to resume their careers after having children, and according to a report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of women in the workforce has more than doubled. The bad news? The amount of early childcare providers hasn’t nearly kept up with the increased demand.

More: How to Help a Toddler Who's Scared of Shots — & Avoid a Meltdown

The childcare crunch understandably makes many parents completely desperate for quality childcare in their region. But even with the scarcity, it's vital to make sure the caregivers you entrust with your child are the highest quality possible — and will help your child learn important skills during this critical period of development.

A child’s early care experience can also impact and determine performance later in life. Research conducted by the White House has shown that children who are exposed to education earlier in life are more likely to do well in school and pursue further education and less likely to drop out of high school. This means curriculum matters, even for our littlest ones. Essential learning and appropriate levels of challenge, consistency and support along with tracking and celebrating milestones are all key factors of a solid day care curriculum.

How can you determine which day care is best for your child? The curriculum provided at the facility can be a great litmus test to help you make the right choice. Within our program, the curriculum was developed using proven key principles based on the expertise of Dr. Esther Wojcicki, a renowned educator, author and advisor specifically focused on the importance of early childcare education and blended learning.

These are the essential questions to ask to determine whether your child is learning what they need to be at day care.

More: Early Signs of Autism Every Parent Should Know

1. Are social & emotional learning a priority?

The early years of a child’s life (especially under the age of 5) are incredibly important, as this is when kids establish the basic foundation of social and emotional development. Care providers should play an integral role in promoting and supporting our wee ones' healthy development. These lessons can be easily and naturally incorporated into curriculum. For example, our providers practice mindfulness in one of their lessons by teaching children simply to stop and think before they act. According to a study reported on in an Oregon State University blog, this seemingly small moment can have immense value for your child’s emotional and social well-being in the long term.

2. Are curiosity, excitement & a challenging environment supported?

Make sure the day care offers an array of activities supporting an exciting inquisition, curiosity and a desire to learn for your kids. One of the continued lesson plans our providers use to support STEM is teaching children about the ecosystem through worms. They even compost leftovers from snack time to create compost juice that gets fed to the worms. This creates nutrient soil that can feed the plants that children end up eating at snack time! Not only is this a great science lesson to teach children, it’s also a sustainable practice for the day care.

3. What subjects are covered in the curriculum?

Ideally, the provider will cover English, math and science and also extend beyond the basics to offer art, music and culture. In a diverse and constantly evolving society, it’s important for each child at a young age to gain access to subjects that will expand their mind and build the right foundation for K through 12 to learning. For example, this could be as simple as an activity like storytelling from other cultures and parts of the world. One fun way I’ve seen this accomplished is through music and hand puppets made from recyclable materials found around the home.

4. What about purposeful play?

It’s certainly important for young kids to play and have access to outdoor activities, whether in a playground, park or in a backyard. Even better, there is an excellent opportunity to enhance this play by incorporating opportunities for learning. One example of an outdoor self-directed activity for children is beanbag hopscotch in which kids can learn to count, take turns and troubleshoot beanbag blockers on the ground. Exploring the environment is also a great way to incorporate learning into play — care providers can point out birds, butterflies, flowers and other things in the child’s surroundings to help the them learn about nature in a fun way. Movement and activity is closely correlated with learning and retaining information, so purposeful play is an excellent way to promote movement while also teaching key lessons.

Ultimately, a good day care offers a program based on curriculum and activities that enhances the quality of the experience for children and parents. In the simplest terms, curriculum should be based on creating foundations at a young age, ensuring children are prepared for K through 12. How can you determine if your child’s day care is meeting these standards? For parents looking to enrich their child's education at day care, you should be actively asking questions. Ensure you have insight into:

  • What your child is learning each day
  • Consistencies found between what your child learns at day care and what they learn at home
  • Updates on your child's progress at day care on an ongoing basis

More: 10 Questions You Should Always Ask on a Day Care Visit

If you don’t feel confident you have access to the above information, it’s best to figure out how willing your care provider is to enhance the experience for children at day care. Do they have the time and ability to do so? In many situations, there are education-based courses and modules available online for providers to learn and apply, but if they don't have time, it may be hard for them to implement.

There are also resources and companies that provide caregivers with access to educational curriculum, ongoing management support and more. If you find that your day care provider is not offering the enrichment you are looking for, then it might be time to explore other day cares in your area. It should be much easier now that you’re equipped with essentials to look for and key questions to help guide your search.

Game of Thrones Star Sean Bean Teases a Possible GoT Reunion TV Special

If you think you're ready for Game of Thrones' final season, think again. Every bit of info we receive about the upcoming eighth season has us holding our breath in anticipation of how the epic HBO series will take a bow. But that's not all! Apparently, we also have a reunion special to look forward to — which is likely to be just as emotional as saying our goodbyes to Westeros if it actually happens.

More: Game of Thrones Is Bringing Back a Character for Season 8 That Jon Snow Fans Will Love

During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sean Bean — who played Ned Stark for just one season of GoT before he was written off the show — admitted that while he hasn't necessarily kept in touch with the rest of his GoT family since leaving the show, he did just see them all. At the same time. For a reunion.

"I’ve only seen them on a couple of occasions. Last time was about four weeks ago in Belfast," Bean said. "Conan O’Brien did this thing. It was the last episode, so we all got together. It was good! It’s funny. With work, you don’t really keep in touch. You do so many types of jobs in that part of the world. It’s just like whenever I see old friends or even old drama school friends, it’s just the same, we pick up where we left off last time."

Um, what?!

When he was asked for clarification, Bean added, "Yes, it was for season eight, the last one. So, they decided to get all the characters together for a bit for this big show in Belfast, and he kind of hosted the evening."

This is certainly an odd throw-away comment, but it potentially points to two things: a private series after-party or a reunion special that will actually air once season eight is over. As noted by Bustle, it's uncommon for networks to air reunion specials immediately after a show has wrapped filming. Plus, HBO hasn't announced anything of the sort. However, if Bean was at a private after-party, then O'Brien's attendance doesn't make a lot of sense, which works in favor of the theory that a reunion TV special is happening.

More: Peter Dinklage's Comments on the GoT Final Season Make Us Nervous for Tyrion

Since HBO keeps things tightly under wraps, it's possible Bean wasn't supposed to mention this reunion at all, hence why he is playing coy about it all. Who knows? Regardless, we'll have to wait at least a year to find out what he meant — the eighth and final season of GoT is slated to air sometime in the first half of 2019, so if a reunion special is coming, it won't be for a while yet.

Cardi B Has Some Postpartum Questions for You

Cardi B isn't about to stop telling it like it is now that she's a mom. If anything, she's more candid than ever — and she's got some pressing questions for you, okurrr?

She and her husband, rapper Offset, welcomed baby daughter Kulture Kiari in July. Although Cardi's loving motherhood, she says she could have done without a few of the unpleasant pregnancy and postpartum surprises. Cardi spoke with Jimmy Kimmel recently on his show, saying that baby Kulture "broke" her vagina (much to the amusement of Kimmel and his studio audience).

More: Cardi B Gets Refreshingly Honest About Childbirth

But the new mama is looking fine. On Instagram, she posted a selfie starring her super-toned tummy — and captioned it with a question that's been driving her crazy: "Ladies how do you get rid of the black line in the middle of your stomach after giving birth? cause bitch [sad face emoji]."

The internet was predictably quick to respond.

"You look great! Mine slowly faded away," one commenter reassured her.

"Hormones! Deal with it! There's life hitting You in the face! Tight bod, though! Congrats!" said one pragmatic fan.

Others suggested Mederma cream and cocoa butter, applied faithfully.

Then the haters crawled out to play:

"[A]re we just gonna ignore the fact that you ignore the fact that nobody cares?" sniped one.

Jeez, the lady's got a broken vagina. Shut the hell up, troll. Is there no decency?

The dark line Cardi B's referring to (according to the American Pregnancy Association) is actually called the pregnancy line (or the linea nigra), and yes, hormones are to blame. Not every woman gets the pregnancy line, but it's common and will often fade away in time after the baby arrives.

But Cardi B recently told Twitter life with Kulture is fantastic — and she's looking forward to her first holiday season with her:

"I'm sooooooo lookin forward to the holidays this year! I want to do really cute things with my baby.... "

She also tweeted:

All together: Awwwwwwww. She had one more question for her fans on Twitter the other day:

Naw, we ain't even mad. Just... are you pregnant already? And can we maybe get a peek at Kulture sometime before she's a big sister?

By 2022, Disney will have transformed Central Florida into the most breathtaking, magical place on Earth — and will likely become the No. 1 destination for Star Wars fans.

But we’ll get to Star Wars in just a moment.

More: Disney Is Removing Plastic Straws From Their Theme Parks, Cruise Ships & Resorts

Disney has four new resorts currently underway, one of which is inspired by nature.

The new mixed-use Disney resort will be integrated seamlessly with its natural surroundings of Bay Lake, Florida, and it’ll be located between Disney's Wilderness Lodge and Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort campground.

The resort will boast 900 hotel rooms and several Disney Vacation Club villas throughout the property.

"This resort experience will be a celebration of Walt Disney's lifelong love and respect for nature, with some fun and even surprising accommodation types that families will find irresistible," says Terri Schultz, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Vacation Club, in a press release.

The accommodations Schultz mentions are proposed Disney Vacation Club villas “spread across a variety of unique accommodation types.” No word on what exactly this means, but we can only assume Disney will have something for everyone.

Up next is Disney Riviera Resort, which is currently under construction near Epcot. This resort, anticipated to open in 2019, will have about 300 rooms and will connect to Disney's Hollywood Studios and the International Gateway at Epcot via the Disney Skyliner.

Also slated to open in 2019 is the completely reimagined Coronado Springs Resort. The resort will have a new 15-story tower overlooking the resort’s lake, Lago Dorado. Other new features include an additional 545 rooms and suits, a two-level entrance lobby in the tower and rooftop dining with panoramic views. The existing 1,800 guest rooms will also be fully renovated.

And we saved the best for last: An immersive Star Wars-inspired destination will also be built at Walt Disney World Resort. It’ll be seamlessly connected to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Considered a first-of-its-kind resort, this destination is described as a “completely immersive experience into an authentic Star Wars story as guests depart together for a multi-day adventure aboard their starship.”

That said, yes, you’ll also find Chewbacca and the rest of your favorite Star Wars characters bopping around the property just begging to get their photo taken with you.

"We continue to add new attractions, new lands — and these beautiful accommodations will be right in the heart of all that magic,” says Walt Disney World Resort President George A. Kalogridis.

More: Disney World Has No Mosquitoes, Proving It Truly Is the Happiest Place on Earth

Kalogridis adds that all four resorts will help drive economic opportunity for Central Florida.

"Walt Disney World is in the midst of our most significant expansion in the last two decades and the combined 1,700 new hotel rooms and proposed Disney Vacation Club villas we are building at four different resorts will create thousands of new construction and permanent jobs and will drive economic opportunity and incremental revenue for Central Florida," Kalogridis says.

While we don’t know the name of the nature-inspired resort just yet, we do know that the second it opens, we’ll be planning a trip to Florida, stat.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was presented with a super-special award on Sunday: the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which has been awarded to one person annually for the last 20 years. She was roasted by celebrities including Bryan Cranston, Tina Fey, Lisa Kudrow, Kumail Nanjiani and Jerry Seinfeld before taking the stage herself to make a heartfelt speech that likely didn't leave a dry eye in the house.

As reported by E! News, Louis-Dreyfus once again opened up about her 2017 breast cancer diagnosis, which delayed production on the final season of her hit HBO series, Veep. During her speech, Louis-Dreyfus said, "Last year, I was lucky enough to get an Emmy award for my performance on Veep, which was an incredible thrill — and it set some kind of a record for most the [sic] Emmys by somebody for doing something or other. Then, about 12 hours later, I was diagnosed with cancer, another hilarious turn of events."

She continued, "I'm only half-kidding, of course. Cancer isn't at all funny, but a big part of dealing with it has been finding the funny moments. The old cliché about laughter being the best medicine turns out to be true — which is good, because that's what the current administration is trying to replace Obamacare with."

Louis-Dreyfus is thankfully cancer-free after receiving treatment, which included chemotherapy and surgery. She went back to work on the set of Veep in August

"When I was getting my hideous chemotherapy, I'd cram a bunch of family and friends into this tiny treatment room with me, and we really did have some great laughs," she said during her speech on Sunday night. "Of course, I was heavily medicated and slipping in and out of consciousness, so I was probably a pretty easy audience, but my point is that laughter is a basic human need, along with love and food and an HBO subscription. There's no situation — none — that isn't improved with a couple of laughs. Everybody needs laughs."

At this point, Louis-Dreyfus was choked up. She said, "The fact that I have had the opportunity to make people laugh for a living is one of the many blessings that I have received in my life."

In an interview with The Washington Post published on Thursday, Louis-Dreyfus said she never even dreamed of walking away from Veep, even when her treatments left her exhausted. “I love making people laugh, and I love making people cry even, and I find the pursuit of a truthful performance to be deeply satisfying to my core," she said.

Per E!, Louis-Dreyfus is only the sixth woman to be honored with the Mark Twain Prize. Her career has been long and illustrious, and we are grateful she is able to keep performing as her health continues to improve. Like she said, we all need laughter, and she provides tons.

Actor and blogger Eva Amurri Martino — mom to daughter Marlowe and son Major — can add designer to her impressive résumé. She collaborated with eco-savvy fantastic fleece line Dudley Stephens to create hot-pink magic in the form of turtlenecks in two Brooklyn-named grown-up styles (Cobble Hill and Park Slope) and a twinning children's style, which she can't wait to wear with her daughter, who is 4.

Eva Amurri Martino

“I begged [Dudley Stephens CEO Lauren Stephens] to make their beloved turtleneck in hot pink, which I have long believed is a style neutral — and it’s my daughter Marlowe’s and my favorite color,” Martino stated in a release. “When we saw the swatch, we just flipped — we can’t wait to twin all season long.”

The new line just launched, and we have a feeling you're going to love its snuggle-chic fabulousness. Sizes 2T to 5T are available for littles (but Amurri Martino notes that it can fit a 12-monther if you get crafty and roll up the sleeves). The women's version comes in sizes 0 to 20.

Hot pink a little bold for your tastes? No prob. Blogger Julia Dzafic of Lemon Stripes created a baby blue line, also available at Dudley Stephens

“I always seek out women-run — particularly mom-run — businesses, because they find functional solutions to everyday problems,” Amurri Martino also said in the press release. “Dudley Stephens has made cozy style totally chic, and my #MomLife is grateful!”

MoreSocial Media Can Be a Lifeline for Women Struggling With Pain, Postpartum Anxiety

We're grateful for Amurri Martino, who was a speaker at SheKnows Media's #BlogHer18 Health conference in January. Amurri Martino addressed the ways social media helped her heal and bounce back from some powerfully challenging events.

Amurri Martino (whose mama is Susan Sarandon, don't ya know) acted for 15 years before beginning her blog Happily Eva After after suffering a devastating miscarriage.

"It was very sudden. It was pretty late in the game — later than I thought people had miscarriages," Amurri Martino said to the crowd. "It was a deeply painful, really isolating experience. In the midst of my pain and my reaction to this experience, I realized that no one was talking about this and... [since it's] something that happens to 1 in 4 pregnancies, there must be a community of people who are suffering in silence. I decided to write a very public blog post, and the response I got really showed me what an appetite there is for openness and authenticity and sharing the good, the bad and the ugly of this very collective motherhood experience.”

She continued, “Last January, I decided to write a blog post detailing what I was going through, and that’s when I started writing about and championing postpartum anxiety and a lot of these mental health issues in the motherhood space, because it can be an extremely isolating experience.”

We're thrilled to support Amurri Martino and her new Dudley Stephens design this winter — and we can't wait to find out what her next adventure will be.

Chopped Judge Alex Guarnaschelli Has One Surprisingly Simple Cooking Hack

Any advice from Chopped judge and celebrity chef Alex Guarnaschelli is advice we should all follow in the kitchen. And in a recent interview with Taste of Home, Guarnaschelli had one surprising — and effective — cooking tip you only wish you'd known sooner.

More: Antoni Porowski & Ina Garten Show Each Other Instagram Love, & We Can't Deal

Basically, when faced with a cooking disaster, Guarnaschelli’s trick involves the most basic of ingredients: water.

“You know while you’re cooking stuff and things are overly brown and things are spinning out of control, a splash of water [will help],” Guarnaschelli said.

For instance, if your sauce is too thick and it’s boiling away, add a splash of water.

“If your chocolate sauce or your hot fudge is separating because it’s too much cream or butter in it, a splash of water will fix it,” she continued.

Guarnaschelli also spilled on her go-to pantry items: vinegar, honey and — wait for it — Dijon mustard. “Life is not life without Dijon mustard,” she said.

As far as honey goes, she said she keeps a jar in her kitchen because just a tiny bit of honey can help balance out anything overly bitter or overly spicy, including sauces, vinaigrettes and meat.

“I think it’s just a great fixer of things,” she said, adding that vinegar is great to add on salads or on broccoli.

In short, Guarnaschelli advises you channel your inner Michael Scott and KISS — keep it simple, stupid.

The Office GIF

“I just think that however simple you think dinner is going to be, if you’re getting it on the table yourself, that’s three-quarters of the battle in my book,” she said.

And that includes cleanup.

This is where Guarnaschelli’s love for baking sheets comes in. She swears by them for two reasons: Making family meals on busy weeknights is a breeze, and they leave very little cleanup.

“I think that minimizing the amount of time you do the dishes is critical,” she said. “I just line a baking sheet with parchment. And if a higher temperature cooking is involved, I just skip the parchment and I just use aluminum foil.”

She added that one of her favorite sheet pan dinners include chicken thighs with an onion medley seasoned with some olive oil, salt, pepper and a dash of curry or cumin.

How a Father's Smoking Habit Might Affect His Children (& Grandchildren)

The negative effects of smoking and nicotine are well known. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking can increase one's risk of contracting heart disease, lung cancer and/or having a stroke. It can also directly affect a fetus if a person smokes while pregnant. However, a new study conducted by researchers at Florida State University and published in PLOS Biology found that a father's exposure to nicotine might also impact his children.

In fact, if a dad is or has been a smoker, it might cause cognitive deficits in his children and grandchildren.

More: Breastfeeding May Come With Another Added Bonus: Improving Your Baby's Memory

The study, which was conducted on rodents, exposed male mice to nicotine. Researchers found that the mice who were exposed to nicotine had altered sperm, and these changes may lead to genetic problems that play a role in memory and learning.

"Our data raise[s] the possibility that some of the cognitive disabilities found in today's generation of children and adults may be attributable to adverse environmental insults suffered a generation or two ago," Dr. Pradeep Bhide, the Jim and Betty Ann Rodgers eminent scholar chair of developmental neuroscience at Florida State University's College of Medicine, said in a statement. For example, "cigarette smoking was more common and more readily accepted by the population in the 1940s, '50s and '60s compared to today... [and] that exposure [could] be revealing itself as a marked rise in the diagnoses of neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and autism."

More: This Group of Children Is Overdiagnosed With ADHD

That said, the study found that changes in the father's sperm appeared to be temporary. However, Bhide noted that additional research is needed to understand if there are any long-term effects. What's more, further studies will be needed to determine if nicotine impacts human sperm in the same manner as mice.

In the meantime, it's still a good idea to avoid smoking in general.

Martha Stewart Shuts Down an Instagram Troll With the Best Comment Ever

Internet trolls who come after Martha Stewart should expect to be put in their places — especially if they're accusing her of being "too old" to enjoy physical activity. The lifestyle guru clapped back at an Instagram commenter over the weekend and received nearly 1,000 Instagram likes from like-minded fans for challenging the commenter's ideas about age.

More: Martha Stewart Has Very Strong Feelings About Pumpkin Spice

On Saturday, Stewart shared a photo of herself riding an e-bike, her hair wind-blown as she smiles in the sunshine for the camera. "Here I am on my new Interceptor: Platinum Edition e-bike from @pedego," she wrote in the caption. "If you’re looking to do some biking this fall, visit one of their shops and try one out - you’ll love two wheel traveling even more!" She also explained that she took her helmet off for the photo to head off comments from her followers about safe riding practices.

One commenter still found a way to shame Stewart for her post. The Instagram account @commentsbycelebs captured the exchange in which the commenter opted to go after Stewart's age.

“Sorry but you are too old to bike safely," the commenter wrote. "[S]et an example admit it make it easier for the rest of us to give up thinking we can still do it all."

Of course, Stewart wasn't having it. She replied, “I feel sorry for you if you think I am too old to bicycle. I keep in excellent shape by doing many outdoor and indoor exercises and activities!”

It may seem counterintuitive for someone to say that exercising is setting a bad example, but internet trolls will go to any lengths to police women's activities, especially when they're in the public eye. People notes that Stewart has always been open about her healthy living practices, which include regular exercise and balanced nutrition.

“Convenience food is just not in my vocabulary,” she told People in 2009. “Yoga is incredibly relaxing, but strenuous, too.” She also recommends another, cheaper alternative to a personal trainer for getting daily exercise in: “I’ve never had a housekeeper and I never will. Cleaning does it for me.”

Ultimately, each person's body is their own, and sharing a photo on Instagram shouldn't be cause for shame. It's refreshing to see someone in Stewart's position actively encouraging people to do their thing, especially when others want to police her physical activity.

Julia Roberts Explains Why She's Moving Away From Rom-Coms

Julia Roberts has a number of memorable romantic comedies in her lengthy repertoire, but that doesn't mean she has to star in them forever. In fact, she says it doesn't make sense for her to play the protagonist in a rom-com at this point in her life or career, but that doesn't mean she dislikes the genre or thinks she's somehow beyond it.

More: Julia Roberts Gets Candid About Turning 50 (& Loving It) in an Interview With Oprah

"There came a point in my career where people thought I had turned on romantic comedies, which I love them, I love to be in them, I love to watch them," Roberts told Entertainment Tonight on Sunday at a promotional event for her new drama thriller series Homecoming. She added, "But sometimes, they just don't work at a certain point of life experience. It's not about age, it's just about what people know that you know."

Roberts has a point. At 50, she's still conquering career milestones and challenges effortlessly, but since rom-coms rely on their protagonists to be generally inexperienced for their tropes to play out effectively, it doesn't always make sense for older, more experienced people to play those parts.

That being said, there are other roles in romantic comedies that Roberts says she might be interested in playing, such as one of "the parents of the people that are rom-com-ing," as she told ET.

While some of Roberts' most famous and enduring film roles include rom-coms like Pretty Woman, Notting Hill and My Best Friend's Wedding, it's perfectly valid for Roberts to distance herself from starring romantic comedies because she doesn't think she'd be believable — especially since that creates space at the table for new young actors to audition for roles like the ones that helped launch her career. In a way, by taking herself out of the running, Roberts is paying it forward, which is fantastic. It also gives her audience a chance to see her take on even more different and dramatic roles than we're used to seeing from her, which is always exciting.

Wells Adams Claps Back at an Instagram Troll for Skinny-Shaming Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland is once again dealing with unsolicited advice on her Instagram page. The actor, who's been open about her struggles with kidney dysplasia and chronic illness since she had a kidney transplant in 2012, has explained repeatedly that her fluctuating weight is a result of her health issues, but apparently, that's not enough for some fans. Luckily, her boyfriend, Wells Adams, has come to her defense against people who think they have a right to comment on her body and refuse to listen to Hyland herself.

More: Wells Adams & Sarah Hyland Took Their Relationship to the Next Level

After Hyland posted a throwback photo on Sunday, one commenter felt the need to express their "concern" over how thin she is.

In a capture posted by Instagram account @commentsbycelebs, the social media user wrote, “May catch a lot of shit for this, but @sarahhyland you have a large fan base, filled with both fans who care for your well being and those who are ‘yes-men’ and will say whatever to make you happy. Me, I’m the type of fan who [is] really concerned. You look really unhealthy. Being that skinny can’t be safe. Now go on and lynch me for expressing myself.”

In response, Adams wrote, “You, your [sic] the type of fan who’s a douche bag.”

This isn't the first time Adams has come to his girlfriend's defense. Earlier this month, he told another commenter to "eat shit" when they wrote that Hyland should "eat a doughnut" after she posted a bikini picture on Oct. 5. In August, Hyland said on her Instagram story, “I’ve been reading some of your DMs and so many of you are like, ‘Girl, you fine but like, eat some bread!’ So I would like to put in a request for anyone who is concerned about my bread consumption to send to Wells Adams, because he is the sole person who knows about how much bread I consume on a daily basis. Thanks! Love you, mean it, k bye.”

Adams was quick to step in with his own Instagram Story. He said, “Just saw Sarah’s story. Apparently there are concerns about how much bread she eats. I can vouch for her that she truly is — she’s not a carnivore, she’s a carbivore."

More: For Wells Adams & Sarah Hyland, It Wasn't Exactly Love at First Sight

Hyland and Adams have been living together since July after dating for about a year. It's awesome that he is so vocally in her corner on social media, especially since the shame she receives is so tone-deaf. If anyone wants to police Hyland's body in a public forum, they should be prepared for Hyland to stand up for herself and also get ready for some choice words from Adams. These two are clearly there for each other in a big way, and we hope that never changes.

Here's What Reflexology Can — & Can't — Help With

$
0
0

Reflexology (also known as zone therapy) is an ancient practice that many continue to seek out today in an effort to alleviate the symptoms of various physical and mental health conditions. Although some believe reflexology can reduce pain and ease anxiety, researchers say that additional high-quality studies are needed before it can be stated that the practice is backed by science.

Due to the lack of science behind reflexology, doctors disagree about how much the practice helps — if at all. But first things first: What exactly is reflexology?

"Reflexology is the technique of applying pressure at certain parts of the body, [such as] the feet, ears and hands," Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, a Manhattan-based physician and medical director at CityMD, tells SheKnows. "The concept suggests there may be a relationship between applying pressure and its effects on our nervous system."

More: What Really Happens at Acupuncture — & How It Helps Your Body

Nesheiwat says that, although there's no data on its effectiveness, reflexology may aid in circulation, relieve stress and reduce anxiety. She notes that some people also report it helps with migraines and relieves fatigue. "This may be true for some — but again, there is no scientific evidence or data that it's effective," she explains.

Although she emphasizes the lack of data, Nesheiwat says she wouldn't object to patients coping with anxiety, depression, neuropathy or poor circulation in their lower extremities by receiving reflexology or therapeutic massage. "It may work well in conjunction with a well-balanced diet and a regular routine exercise pattern," she adds.

More: Acupressure Tricks for When You Feel Like You're About to Lose Your Lid

Other doctors take the firm stance that reflexology's benefits are likely the result of a placebo effect. Pointing to the lack of scientific evidence behind the practice, Dr. Morton Tavel, a physician and clinical professor emeritus of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, describes the practice as "snake oil."

"Apparent improvements following reflexology are basically 'placebo' responses — a [usually subjective] improvement in symptoms following some procedure that lacks any scientific basis," Tavel tells SheKnows, adding that placebo responses are enhanced by several factors, one of which is close contact with the caregiver, especially when it's accompanied by some form of physical contact.

But that's not to say all "mainstream" physicians have written off the practice. Dr. Nada Milosavljevic, a double board-certified, Harvard-trained physician who has specialty certifications in regenerative and functional medicine and medical acupuncture, does recommend reflexology to certain patients.

"For pain conditions like headaches, reflexology of the feet can target various nerve endings and also generally support good circulation," Milosavljevic tells SheKnows. "In traditional Chinese medicine, there are a number of acupressure points on the body and some corresponding points on the feet that are often manipulated to address chronic headache."

More: The Best & Worst Sleeping Positions for Chronic Pain

Although Milosavljevic acknowledges that studies about reflexology's effectiveness are mixed, she says that, like acupuncture, it can also help with conditions including fatigue, stress and chronic pain.

If you're considering giving reflexology or any other alternative medicine a try, it's crucial to make sure that the practice is safe and the worst thing that will happen is you won't find it particularly effective. The consensus among doctors is that reflexology is a generally safe practice even if it's not one they would recommend or endorse as helpful.

Nesheiwat explains that there aren't dangers associated with reflexology — just make sure you're exercising common safety measures. For example, avoid extreme pressure because it could cause nerve irritation or possible fracture.

"In general, it's a safe therapy and can be quite relaxing," Milosavljevic says. "But as with any treatment, always keep your individual health concerns and any limitations in mind."

In the interest of "better safe than sorry," it's best to check in with your health care provider before you try reflexology or add it to your regimen.
