Dwayne Johnson Condemned for Supporting 'Animal Abuse'

It appears Dwayne Johnson has upset some of his fans. In fact, on Sunday, many were outraged because the wrestler-turned-actor posted pictures of himself and his family visiting at the Georgia Aquarium.

More: The Rock Reveals His Struggle With Depression — Here's Why That's So Important

Of course, the pictures — which were posted on Instagram — seemed benign. The first showed Johnson and his children peering into a tank of whale sharks. The second showed him shaking hands with a beluga, and the third showed Johnson standing with (and smiling down on) a sea lion. What's more, in one of the photos, Johnson explained that he was humbled and “in awe” of the Georgia Aquarium.

“[This is] the second largest aquarium in the world and the only institution outside of Asia that houses Whale Sharks. More than 100,000 animals and sea creatures here that I’m in constant awe of," Johnson wrote. He then went on to thank the “President & COO, Joseph Handy & the entire Georgia Aquarium staff for being so gracious, kind & informative" to his family and friends.

However, animal rights advocates were furious, accusing Johnson of supporting animal abuse. One user wrote that Johnson (and his followers) should not “support any kind of businesses that retain wild animals from their freedom to entertain people.” Another wrote that facilities like zoos and aquariums are inhumane, and a third user condemned Johnson for “spreading propaganda. The Georgia Aquarium takes animals from their native waters so they can exploit them for profit. These animals don’t belong in tiny chlorinated pools. This,” he wrote, “is animal abuse.”

Of course, these comments — and others like them — have caused Johnson’s Instagram page to become something of a war ground (one which has devolved from an ethical argument into one which contains name-calling and personal attacks).

Johnson has not responded to any of the criticism, and it remains unclear whether he will.

How Common Are Naturally Occurring Twins?

While twin pregnancies often occur after fertility treatment (such as in vitro fertilization), we have to wonder — just how common are naturally occurring twins? We thought we'd dive head-first into a full-on twin investigation to find out what the chances having twins really are.

MoreI Set a Hospital Record When I Gave Birth to My Twin Boys

Twinning happens in two different ways

First, let's go over some groundwork. Dizygotic twinning, more commonly known as fraternal twins, results from fertilization of two eggs with two different sperm. Monozygotic twinning (or identical twins) results when a single fertilized egg splits and forms two embryos.

MoreKnowing When to Draw the Line on Fertility Treatments

Dr. Michael Nageotte, associate chief medical officer at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Long Beach, California, tells us that fraternal twins are more common than their identical counterparts and are the type that tend to increase with use of fertility medications.

Is twinning genetic?

Twinning in general can be affected by genetics, but again, we're only talking about fraternal twins here. Dr. Michael Haydon, the medical director of maternal fetal medicine at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, notes that "there does appear to be a genetic component of fraternal twins. Certain families do in fact have a genetic predisposition to having twins."

One of the reasons may be due to the increased hormone levels in certain populations, he says. "For example, twins are more common in certain African countries and less common in Southeast Asia," says Haydon. "Another common reason for conceiving twins, even without assisted reproductive technology, is maternal age."

MoreTwo & Done? Having Boy-Girl Twins Doesn't Mean You've Hit the Reproductive Jackpot

What is the incidence, then, of naturally-conceived twins?

Overall, the rate of twinning is around 1 in 90 pregnancies, says Nageotte. However, he notes that those rates do vary, as Haydon pointed out above — black Americans conceive twins more often than white Americans do, and the incidence is further decreased in Asian Americans.

It's important to note that twinning doesn't, in fact, skip generations — your chances tend to be higher if the women in your family have conceived fraternal twins, whether it was your great-grandmother, your grandma or your mom. Of course, if you've already birthed fraternal twins, your chances increase for it to happen again.

Also, since reproductive endocrinology has advanced over the last few decades, overall twinning rate (including fertility medication or assistance) is about 1 in 30 pregnancies, according to a report released in 2018 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.

Do twins increase pregnancy risks?

While many twin pregnancies progress without issue and delivery is a piece of cake, carrying twins does increase a few risks. For starters, Haydon says that twins tend to deliver earlier than their singleton peers (around 36 weeks).

Also, identical twin pregnancies can carry increased risks (according to the American Pregnancy Association), as they share a placenta, and of course, if the lowest twin is breech, docs usually elect for a C-section. Twin moms-to-be are also at increased risk of developing gestational diabetes (according to a study in The Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine in 2009) and preeclampsia.

You probably won't have twins

While it's likely that you won't have twins, there are quite a few things that can boost your chances, including genetics — or fertility medication or treatments.

Jennifer Aniston is the busiest of busy bees right now filming her new Netflix comedy Murder Mystery with Adam Sandler. Earlier this week, filming for the movie took the team to a little place called Lake Como, Italy, and it just so happens that one of the area's most famous residents, George Clooney, was also spending some time there. So naturally, Aniston took the chance when in Rome, er, Lake Como, to visit her old pal Clooney in between filming.

According to Us Weekly, Aniston went over to Clooney's Lake Como villa on Saturday to visit with her longtime friend and his wife, Amal Clooney, who was there as well. It's not clear if the Clooney babies were also home, but if they were, we're pretty sure there would be lots of fawning over just how precious they are.

Us Weekly also reports that Aniston did not fly solo while visiting with the Clooneys. In fact, Murder Mystery costar Adam Sandler and his wife, Jackie, also came along to say hello. Talk about a fun bunch of celebrity friends, right? According to an onlooker, the whole group had a lot of fun together, and they reportedly "were laughing a lot, listening to music and singing together."

And, for those who have been keen to see a bit more of the cast of Murder Mystery, this photo popped up on Twitter earlier this week. In the behind-the-scenes shot, you can see Sandler and Aniston all dressed up and hanging out with costars Adeel Akhtar, Dany Boon and Luis Gerardo Méndez. It'll be interesting to see why this portion of the cast was hanging out, especially because some of the film's bigger stars, like Luke Evans and Gemma Arterton, were nowhere to be found.

All in all, it sounds like Aniston's time in Italy has been both productive and relaxing, which is exactly what the doctor ordered now that Aniston is focused solely on her career and her friendships following the breakup of her marriage to Justin Theroux earlier this year. Get your best life, Aniston.

It seems like the entire country is in the middle of a perpetual heat wave this summer, but there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon. That's right, folks — fall will eventually be here, and for those who love this transitional season, Starbucks has started a secret Facebook group.

Called "the Leaf Rakers' Society," the Facebook group's mission is to be a place "that celebrates...Fall. Year. Long." and to be "a forum where we constructively work together with Mother Nature to help Autumn arrive earlier in the calendar year."

But we have an inkling the group will be used for something else: announcing when pumpkin spice lattes will finally be available this year! In the past, the drink has been offered in August, but it’s also been kept in the vault until well into September. The fact that Starbucks is already jumping on the autumn bandwagon seems like a good sign for those of use craving our fave fall beverage — could it be that the PSL is almost here? Only time will tell, but we’re definitely joining the Leaf Rakers’ Society in the meantime so we can keep tabs on all things fall.

Nervous Flyer? These Tips Will Ease Your Stress

If the idea of boarding a plane makes your palms sweaty and a turbulent bump makes your stomach flip, you may be a nervous flyer. Flying can be an overwhelming experience, and with the stresses that come with summer travel, we want to help you do what you can to ease your flying anxiety for your own well-being. Even if you’re traveling with others, self-care is important — you should always secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others, after all. Here are five ways to calm your nerves before takeoff.

1. Imagine yourself somewhere else

If you feel overwhelmed by the fact that you’re 30,000 feet in the air somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, try closing your eyes for a few minutes and simply imagine you’re somewhere else. This therapeutic tool is called “visualization,” and experts say the technique can work to distract yourself in stressful situations. According to research conducted by clinical psychologist, Dr. Elisha Goldstein, individuals who spent five minutes visualizing themselves somewhere else when they were in a stressful environment found significant relief from their anxious feelings.

2. Write with your nondominant hand

It might sound crazy, but after you board your flight, take out a pen and paper and practice writing your name with your nondominant hand. Captain Ron Nielson, a pilot of over 40 years, said on Today that this distracting exercise can really help ease the nerves before the plane even leaves the ground. The activity forces your brain to focus on an attention-consuming task, concurrently steering your focus away from your anxious thoughts.

3. Try a mental rehearsal

According to licensed psychologist Dr. Nancy Mramor, relaxing before a flight takes a little bit of advanced prep — or, “mental rehearsal,” as she calls it. “A person needs some preparation in order to reduce the anxiety,” Mramor told us. “If they know how to relax in general, through mindfulness perhaps, then they will be in a good place to use the same methods before and during the flight.” Mramor also says that individuals should work actively to get rid of any negative associations with flying. “If they have had a traumatic flight experience,” she says, “they may need help to break the negative association and reset their expectations,” which can be done with therapeutic methods, such as counting backward and imagining oneself going downstairs. By distracting your mind with specific motions, you can snap out of your current mindset and focus on something else entirely.

4. Reject the what-if thoughts

Oftentimes, we build on our anxious thoughts internally once we keep thinking, “What if...?” without stopping ourselves. Instead of falling down the overwhelming rabbit hole, try writing down two to three fears of yours on paper to get them out of your head. You can even give yourself a pep talk according to Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis, adjunct professor of psychology at Columbia University. “Focus on good in your life and think about what you’re grateful for,” she told us. “Refuse to think about what-ifs" by focusing on positivity instead and physically getting the thoughts out of your head.

More: How You Can Reduce Stress Through Travel

5. Don’t breathe too deeply

Finally, breathing. The typical advice we hear when we’re anxious is to take a deep breath — but according to New York City-based physiotherapist Patricia Ladis, taking overly exaggerated breaths may actually make you more anxious when you’re already in a panicked state. The alternative? Work on taking quiet, soft breaths, suggests Ladis. “Bring your tongue to the roof of your mouth — this is the ideal position for relaxing the neck and the upper chest,” she explains. “Then, with your mouth closed, gently breathe in and out through your nose, from two to five minutes.” It may not feel natural at first, but the slow rhythm of your small breaths will help relax your body and bring you to a more mindful state.

Beyoncé Talks ‘Mommy Pouch’ Postpartum Body & Loving Her New Curves

Beyoncé is setting postpartum bellies free with her inspiring body-positive message in September's Vogue cover story — and we are relishing every single word.

All-around goddess Beyoncé talked body changes with Vogue in a detailed interview — and said that "a six-pack" is the last thing on her mind 13 months after the birth of her twins, Sir and Rumi.

MoreBeyoncé's Most-Liked Instagram Posts of All Time

“To this day my arms, shoulders, breasts and thighs are fuller. I have a little mommy pouch, and I’m in no rush to get rid of it. I think it’s real,” Beyoncé told the magazine. “Whenever I’m ready to get a six-pack, I will go into beast zone and work my ass off until I have it. But right now, my little FUPA and I feel like we are meant to be.”

Beyoncé also revealed to Vogue that she weighed 218 pounds the day she delivered her twins via emergency C-section. She and husband Jay-Z spent several weeks by the twins' side in the NICU — a time Beyoncé remembers as "survival mode."

“I needed time to heal, to recover,” she explained. “During my recovery, I gave myself self-love and self-care, and I embraced being curvier. I accepted what my body wanted to be... I was patient with myself and enjoyed my fuller curves. My kids and husband did, too.”

Beyoncé also expressed remorse about striving to get her pre-pregnancy body back when her firstborn, Blue Ivy — now 6 — was born. “After the birth of my first child, I believed in the things society said about how my body should look. I put pressure on myself to lose all the baby weight in three months, and scheduled a small tour to assure I would do it," Beyoncé said.

“Looking back, that was crazy,” the icon said. “I was still breastfeeding when I performed the Revel shows in Atlantic City in 2012. After the twins, I approached things very differently.”

Amen. We're definitely hoping that Beyoncé's new take on postpartum body acceptance is one that catches on. And if you want to plaster your walls with pics from her Vogue photo shoot (aaahhmazing), the September issue will be available in NYC and Los Angeles on Aug. 14 and across the country on Aug. 21.

There's a Wild New Movie About McDonald's Coming Out, & It Involves Ben Affleck & Matt Damon

Growing up, my family and I were hardcore about collecting McDonald's Monopoly game pieces. Every year, we were convinced we had a chance to win big, but it turns out that while we were honestly and humbly collecting our Monopoly pieces in accordance with the rules, one ex-cop was rigging the game so he could steal more than $24 million from the game over time.

Now, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are slated to direct (Affleck) and star (Damon) in a film based on an article about the caper in The Daily Beast.

More: The McDonald's Szechuan Sauce Promo Got Totally Out of Hand

The story goes something like this: One of the workers at the printing company that manufactured McDonald's Monopoly game pieces figured out how to rig the game (along with the help of a few of his associates) to win every grand price for more than 12 years in a row. In the height of Monopoly hysteria, people were truly willing to go to any length to try to win the million-dollar grand prize or the $50,000 a year for 20 years prize. McDonald's restaurant workers were even held at gunpoint and forced to turn over game pieces, and then came along ex-cop Jerome Jacobson.

Jacobson himself didn't win all of the prizes. What he would do is sort of trade the game pieces printed by the company he worked at. He would make a deal with someone that he'd give them the winning piece, and they would give him the first $50,000 installment in return, for instance, or he would have people give him money up front in exchange for a piece.

It wasn't until 2001 that the FBI caught Jacobson and the rest of us could finally trust that spending our hard-earned cash on McDoubles and McNuggets wasn't as futile a pursuit as it seemed now that more of the prizes would actually be on the table for honest folks to win (though the odds are still outrageous).

After a bidding war for rights to the story, Hollywood BFFs Damon and Affleck, along with Fox, are now slated to create a movie based on the story of Jacobson's scheme. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who wrote Deadpool, will be in charge of the script for the film. That means we can probably expect some witty exchanges and a tongue-in-cheek look at what went down.

Here's just hoping the movie theater won't notice when we try to smuggle in a Happy Meal as our snack once the film is finally released.

10 Hilarious & Super-Relatable Exhausted Working-Mom Fails

By Candace Alnaji

Life as a parent is exhausting. We spend all our time working for and worrying about our kids. Day or night. It doesn’t matter if you’re awake or asleep. If you are a parent, you are on duty — and it can be stressful.

Parental burnout is a real thing. The exhaustion that comes from weeks, months and years of trying to function as a contributing member of society on zero sleep is mind-boggling. You’re not just tired, you are bone tired.

Whether you work outside the home or not, all moms and dads work hard. However, there is no question that trying to maintain a career takes the unpredictability up a notch.

More: Public Breastfeeding Is Now "Protected" in All 50 States, but the Internet Is Skeptical

I’ve been a working mom since I had my first child three years ago. Since then, we’ve also added twins to the mix. Three kids in three years, and I’ve been a working mom every step of the way. Sometimes I’ve worked more and sometimes I’ve worked less. I’ve worked in the office and I’ve worked from home. In this current season of life, I work exclusively from home as an attorney and writer.

I know what it’s like to balance life, kids, career, relationships, self-care and all the other things that come along with being an adult. But that doesn’t mean it’s always easy, and I’ve had more than my share of hilarious working-mom fails.

There are days I’ve left the house wearing an inside-out sweater. Days my son spilled milk on my work outfit moments after we left the house. There’s also the time I left the house wearing two different shoes and didn’t know until my mother-in-law told me when I dropped my son off before work. Apparently, I’ve had a lot of motherhood-related wardrobe fails.

But I’ve also had other kinds as well. I can’t even tell you the number of times I’ve been on a conference call or on the phone with opposing counsel or even on a call with a judge while my son hollered about something in the background. Sorry about that, Your Honor.

We all remember BBC Dad and how hilarious it was to watch his children burst into the room during an internationally televised interview. It’s funny because it’s relatable. As parents, we’ve been there. We know what it’s like, and occasionally, it’s nice to know we’re not the only ones saving face when a wily toddler suddenly appears on videoconference.

That’s why we asked real working moms to share their hilarious working-mom fails — and boy, did they come through. Their stories will make you laugh. They’ll make you cry. They’ll make you wish you hired a babysitter. But more than anything, they’ll make you appreciate that we’re all in this together.

“I worked night shift as a NICU RN and came home to make my daughter’s lunch before school. I forgot I had gotten both sliced mozzarella cheese and American cheese while food shopping. I made my daughter her American cheese and mustard sandwich and sent her on her way. She came home [later that day] and said I gave her funny cheese. It wasn’t until later when I made dinner I realized I gave her a mozzarella and mustard sandwich.” — Tara Michelle

“I was at a deposition with a major client. I put my workbag on the table and started to pull out my notepads and laptop when a bunch of diapers spilled out onto the table. The opposing attorney just stared at me.” — Jordan Marie

“I was in court with a client and settled her case. I needed a pen for us to sign on the dotted line, so I reached for one in my bag. No pens. Just one blue crayon. A crayon! My daughter swiped my pens. Now I keep at least four pens in my bag at all times. Thankfully, my client was a mom too, and this just made her laugh and reminisce. But I was so embarrassed!” — Megan LeeAnn

“I asked my mom to look after my son while I met with a client in my home office for a quick contract signing. Just as we were finishing up, my 2-year-old came crashing through the French doors wearing only a diaper and asking for milk. He had broken loose while my mom stopped to use the bathroom.” — Julia Jacobs

“I gave day care some spare clothes for my 3-year-old at the beginning of the school year. He didn’t need to use the spare clothes for a long time. One day in December, I arrived after school and found him dressed in a classmate’s pastel Frozen sweatshirt and mismatched leggings. Apparently, I forgot to update day care with a set of winter clothes, and the only ones he had were shorts and tank tops from August. They had no choice but to scrounge around for something else. Face. Palm.” — Katelyn K.

“I was in my office on the phone with a client. While I was talking, I was looking at a picture on my desk of my daughters. They must have been on my mind because, before hanging up, I told my big important client that I loved her. Still haven’t lived that one down. She laughed about it, but I’m sure she gave me some serious side-eye after we hung up.” — Melody Brown

“I work from home, which entails lots of teleconferencing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work out so well when you have a toddler running around. On the day of an important videoconference, my husband was late getting home and couldn’t watch our son. In desperation, I grabbed some crackers and shoved them at my 13-month-old in the hopes he would be quiet for just a few minutes. He mostly complied except for one super-awkward moment when I was in the middle of talking and out of nowhere, a teething cracker hit me smack in the face. Needless to say, explaining that one to my coworkers was super-fun.” — Emily Solberg

“You’re not going to believe this, but once, years ago, during a work dinner, I asked my colleague if she needed help cutting her food. She was eating spaghetti. I have no idea what came over me besides the fact that I would cut my kids’ spaghetti whenever we had it. My brain must have seen the spaghetti and just went on autopilot. We about died laughing afterward. Later, when I told my husband what happened, he told me I probably need to get out of the house more.” — Colleen Jones

“One time, I had a new business partner who was super-excited about getting her business launched. Everyone was on the Zoom. I had headphones on, and my baby started getting fussy. My baby proceeded to scream the entire time I was on the call. I thought because I had the headphones in, the others on Zoom couldn’t hear her — but they could. Finally, my new business partner — in her sweet, soft Southern accent — said, ‘I can’t concentrate. Your baby is so loud. Let’s reschedule.’ I was mortified! She is now one of my best friends and business partners but that was a crazy night.” — Caitlin Wheeler

I don’t want to blame pregnancy brain, but that was definitely pregnancy brain.” — Candace Alnaji (yes, this is my story!).

Jamie Lynn Spears Instagrammed Her Daughter With a Gun, & the Internet Has Feelings

We haven't heard much about Jamie Lynn Spears over the years. Since she gave birth to her first child and ended her run on her Nickelodeon show, Zoey 101, in 2008, she has been MIA raising her family. However, after a decade off the grid, she's back in the headlines for a controversial reason: a photo of her 10-year-old daughter holding a gun.

On Monday, Spears' husband, Jamie Watson, Instagrammed a picture of their daughter, Maddie Briann Aldridge, holding a shotgun. The picture featured Maddie, whose father is Spears' ex-boyfriend Casey Aldridge, with a tall shotgun in the middle of a field. Maddie is seen barefoot in a T-shirt and shorts holding the gun, which is pointed at the sky. "Getting her ready for dove season," Watson captioned the picture.

More: 10 Celebrity Moms Who Shut Down Mommy-Shamers

Immediately, both Spears and Watson came under fire for allowing Maddie to hold a gun. Many criticized the parents for teaching their 10-year-old how to shoot at such a young age, and several also called Spears and Watson hypocrites for killing doves for fun despite their reputation as animal lovers. A few choice comments:

“A 10 year old with a shotgun. If that’s not redneck I don’t know what is."

“You're so irresponsible. Guns are not a toy.”

“It’s ironic they post about their amazing dog (who is totally dependent on them) all the time when they then go and kill animals that are living their own lives minding their own business. Teaching kids to kill things is weird leave that till they’re older, man.”

“Bad parents ??."

"A girl should NEVER carry a shotgun or learn to KILL animals. Maddie is an amazing girl. Do not teach her to learn these horrible things."

However, the response hasn't been all negative. Many of Spears' and Watson's followers have shown their support for Maddie learning how to shoot, claiming that it's "parenting done right."

As of yet, neither Spears nor Watson has commented on the controversy. Though Watson keeping the Instagram up might be a response in itself.

HGTV Buys the Brady Bunch House, & Lance Bass Isn't Very Happy About It

Many of us grew up watching The Brady Bunch. Why? Well, because it was quirky, it was funny, it was wholesome and because it was one of the first TV shows that portrayed a blended family (a huge endeavor for a show produced in the '60s). As such, many of us have fond feelings for the Bradys. We laughed with them. We cried with them, and we were a part of their home. But that home — the one we knew so well — no longer belongs to the Bradys.

On Monday, People reported that HGTV now owns 11222 Dilling Street.

“I am excited to share that HGTV is the winning bidder and will restore the Brady Bunch home to its 1970s glory as only HGTV can,” CEO of Discovery Inc., which owns HGTV, David Zaslav said on a call.

“More details to come over the next few months, but we will bring all the resources to bear to tell safe, fun stories with this beloved piece of American TV history,” he added.

The property, which went on sale in July, has two bedrooms, three bathrooms, two master suites and boasts 2,477 square feet. It sits on a third-of-an-acre lot. And while there is no word what the iconic home sold for, it did incite a bidding war.

In fact, one of the highest bidders was Lance Bass, a former member of NSYNC.

Of course, Bass isn’t happy he lost his dream home. On Saturday, he took to Instagram to share his disappointment.

“Im feeling heartbroken today. As many of you may have heard, we placed the winning bid on the iconic Brady Bunch house—at least that’s what we were told. The agent representing the estate informed us we made the winning bid… even writing up the ‘winning bid’ for my team after informing me of the good news.” But Bass learned the next day there was a problem with his purchase.

“The next day, due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’ the same agent informed us that there’s another Corporate Buyer (Hollywood studio) who wants the house at any cost. We were prepared to go even higher but [were] totally discouraged by the seller's agent, they will outperform any bid with unlimited resources.”

Bass told his fans that he felt used but — more important — was “hurt and saddened by this highly questionable outcome.”

The good news is that Bass’ main concern (that the property would be demolished) appears to be a moot point. However, we will still have to wait and see what HGTV will do.

How to Tell if a Relationship Issue Is a Deal Breaker

$
0
0

Whether you’re just starting to call yourself a couple or have been together for years, almost everyone will learn something about their boo and think, "Holy crap. What have I gotten myself into?"

Relationships have their fair share of turmoil: Infidelity. Grief. Substance abuse. Financial troubles. While we may think we know where our line in the sand is, it’s not always as easy when you’re faced with the decision to stay or go yourself.

But how do we figure out when an issue is a deal breaker and when it’s something you and your spouse can work through? Here's what two experts had to say.

When one person is in the wrong

Let’s assume your issue is obvious — your partner has done something painful, like cheating, or spending a large sum of money you hadn’t agreed to spend, and you’re trying to figure out whether you should stay or go.

More: 12 Characteristics of Truly Happy Couples

“The important thing is really to know yourself and your boundaries,” licensed clinical social worker Dr. Alisha Powell tells SheKnows. Once you have an understanding of these, it’s easier to communicate them to your partner.

The next piece of the puzzle is good old communication. “Can your partner sit with you and be accountable?” Dr. Fran Walfish, Beverly Hills relationship psychotherapist, author of The Self-Aware Parent and costar on We TV’s Sex Box, tells SheKnows. “Do his words, tone, demeanor and affect communicate that he truly has the capacity to feel the impact of his own behavior on you?”

In order to find out, you’re going to have to have a frank, transparent conversation. The best way to have this talk is to use "I" statements, sharing your feelings, needs and expectations, Powell advises. Then ask your partner to communicate what he just heard you say so you can be sure you’re really hearing each other.

More: 6 Signs You & Your Partner Have a Disconnect

“If your partner is willing to work with you and to change and is 100 percent into it, then it’s something that can be worked through,” Powell says. “But if your partner is consistently shut down, criticizes you, immediately gets defensive and can’t take responsibility or can’t empathize with your feelings… that is a clear indication that this relationship is not a healthy place for you to be in.”

When nobody is wrong but the issue is still there

But what if your issue is something more complicated, and neither of you is necessarily in the wrong — like being on opposite sides of deciding whether you want to have children or having a difference in parenting styles or religious beliefs?

Often, these issues come down to “how powerful the love is in the relationship” as well as how rigid or flexible the partners in the couple are in their stances, Walfish says. Unfortunately, these topics often take time to address and can be greatly helped by a third party, like a therapist, counselor, pastor or rabbi, she says. “These are very big, important, life-changing decisions, and sometimes they require careful, serious thought and time.”

And, of course, they require more communication. The goal is to figure out where you and your partner do and don’t agree and whether you can work together toward a similar goal. Through conversation, you may be able to work it out. Or not. “Sometimes there isn’t a compromise,” says Powell. “But being able to talk it out means being able to recognize when there will be no compromise because something is conflicting with both people’s core beliefs.”

Angelina Jolie Made a Serious Claim About Brad Pitt & His Child Support Payments

The end may actually not be in sight for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who are currently in the middle of hashing out the final details of their divorce settlement. On Tuesday, E! News reported that Jolie has actually leveled a serious new claim about Pitt's legal responsibility to pay child support in a court filing. It's a surprising move to say the least, especially since earlier reports indicated that Jolie and Pitt had nearly sewn up their settlement and were getting ready to move on with their lives.

More: Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt's New Custody Agreement Made Pitt's Father's Day

According to E! News, Jolie has put forth in a new court filing that Pitt "has not paid any 'meaningful' child support since their drawn-out divorce proceedings began in 2016" — a serious allegation against a man who has reportedly been nothing but a devoted father to his children and has worked to ensure his children are safe and sound as he and Jolie separate.

It is written in the filing that "given the informal arrangements around the payment of the children's expenses have not been regularly sustained by [Pitt] for over a year and a half" it looks like Jolie will likely request a court order "for the establishment of a retroactive child support order."

It's unclear at this time what Jolie means by the term "meaningful," what the desired child support payment would be or what Pitt has been paying in monthly installments since 2016. Neither Jolie nor Pitt have released statements on this new development, and it's highly unlikely that they'll add any further comment into the mix given the sensitivity of the issue.

More: Angelina Jolie's Relationship With Brad Pitt Is Affecting Their Custody Agreement

It looks like this is just one in a recent string of developments that will, according to a separate E! News report from Tuesday afternoon, prolong the settlement proceedings between these two A-list actors. Per a source speaking to E! for this second report, "Brad and Angelina are not even close to settling their divorce. They are so hung up on dealing with the custody issues that they haven't even exchanged any financial documents yet, which is routine in divorces and one of the first steps people take in the filing process." Yikes.

The source went on to add, "There will be no settlement or resolution anytime soon. They are kind of at an impasse at this point because the focus has been on custody; nothing else has been hashed out yet."

Women's Symptoms Are Routinely Dismissed, but Amy Ziering Is Working to Change That

Following her award-winning documentary The Hunting Ground on campus sexual assault, filmmaker Amy Ziering is back with a takedown of the negligence in the medical device industry in The Bleeding Edge. In her latest offering, which premiered on Netflix on July 27, Ziering and her screenplay cowriter Kirby Dick (who also directed the film) amplify the stories of a group of people whose lives have all been negatively impacted by faulty medical devices.

According to the film, the $400 billion medical device industry — which incorporates everything from vaginal mesh to hip implants to robotic surgeons — is far less regulated than pharmaceuticals but doesn't receive nearly as much media attention.

“We’re always keeping our eyes and ears open for subjects that would make interesting and worthy films and fall within the wheelhouse of our interests and talents,” Ziering tells SheKnows. "Someone came to us and told us a story about the ways in which their medical device caused egregious harm, and not only that, but that they hadn’t been fully informed of the risks and that none of this actually had to happen if proper due diligence had been followed. Our interest was piqued."

More: Before #MeToo, Amy Ziering Was Out There Giving Women a Voice

After listening to the person's stories, Ziering and Dick first wondered how this lack of regulation of these products was even possible, but after doing their own research, they confirmed what the person had told them.

"We found out that everything this person had reported was true and reflective real systemic flaws that we were totally unaware of and that the public is totally unaware of and most of the medical community is unaware of," Ziering explains.

The Bleeding Edge tells the stories of five people with different (all horrific) experiences with faulty medical devices. One of the standouts is Gaby Avina, a nurse and former spokesperson for the Essure coiled birth control implant, who had major health problems after getting the device. Many other women have reported unplanned pregnancies, bleeding and chronic pain after getting Essure. Then, a week before the film was released, Bayer announced that it would stop selling the implant (for "business reasons").

"It seems like some of the ways these devices, because of the lack of sufficient oversight and regulation... can really wreak havoc seems barbaric and brutal," Ziering says. "I kept thinking it just seems like it’s equivalent to torture mechanisms from another century — and fully preventable."

But Ziering is also firm that the film isn't out to discredit all medical devices.

"Obviously there’s a lot of devices out there that are unbelievably great," she stresses. "We’re just saying that all devices need proper regulation so the ones that can really cause harm aren’t being put out on the market."

One of the main themes of the film is that patients — women in particular — need to stand up for themselves when it comes to getting proper diagnoses and treatment, even when our pain is ignored.

"Women all too often are very inclined to acquiesce when they’re disbelieved. Don’t do that," Ziering says. "Not only that, but also women... are routinely, disproportionately disbelieved when they report symptoms."

More: What International Women's Day Has to Do With Health Care

After her experience working on The Bleeding Edge, Ziering has some advice for women who may feel like their doctor doesn't believe them: "[D]on’t buy that narrative if the doctor is telling you it’s in your head... and you know it isn’t. Find another doctor."

Ziering also thinks that we all need to learn how to be "really vigilant and rigorous consumers" when it comes to medical devices and not be afraid to ask questions about safety, like you would when buying a car. And if your doctor says you'll need a medical device, she suggests asking if you can see the studies on the device, how long they have been in use and whether they have had any adverse consequences for other people who have used them.

"We just take these things at face value and don’t question them the way we should," she says. "If all of us start asking more questions about how these devices were tested, then... you’ll be a much healthier and safer person in the long run as a consumer of these products."

Tom Hardy Truly Respects Prince Harry & Their 'Deeply Private' Friendship

Believe it or not, Tom Hardy and Prince Harry have been friends for years, and their friendship is one the actor respects greatly. In an interview with Esquire published on Tuesday, Hardy briefly spoke about his relationship with the Duke of Sussex

More: Reminder: Tom Hardy Is Super Intense

According to the publication, Hardy didn't exactly dish about how he scored an invite to Harry's wedding to Meghan (née Markle), only saying, "It's deeply private." As for how Hardy feels about the prince, well, his description says it all. He told Esquire, "Harry is a fucking legend." That's one way to describe him. Actually, there are some people who would probably agree with Hardy because Harry is beloved by many.

More: Tom Hardy's New Tattoo Is an Ode to Leonardo DiCaprio

Even though the actor only briefly discussed Harry, you can tell how much he respects the royal and admires their friendship. First of all, he didn't say too much and maintained Harry's privacy, which probably means a lot to the prince. The royal family doesn't typically share a lot about their personal lives. Secondly, the way the Dunkirk star described Harry says it all. Hardy clearly thinks a lot of the royal family member. You don't just call anyone a "fucking legend." They must have quite the relationship — and one Hardy seems to cherish.

For those unaware, Hardy has been an ambassador for The Prince's Trust, Prince Charles' charity helping disadvantaged youth, since 2010. According to Entertainment Tonight, Hardy gave the following statement upon joining the organization: "I became an Ambassador for The Prince’s Trust to show my support for its work with tens of thousands of disadvantaged young people every year. It’s so important to me that they get the life-changing second chance that I had."

Harry even attended the Dunkirk premiere in July 2017 to support Hardy. Yes, their friendship is legit. Despite Hardy not offering up too many details about Harry, his rare interview still shows how much he cares about their bond.

Is It OK to Watch the Bachelor Franchise in the #MeToo Era?

It's a big Bachelor summer on ABC, with The Bachelorette recently completing its 14th season and Bachelor in Paradise jumping into late summer with its fifth season. Even with all the hoopla about who's returning to the show and the watercooler talk on Twitter, I find it's really hard to support the franchise in the #MeToo era.

More: Becca Kufrin's First-Impression Rose Winner Is Causing a Lot of Controversy

When the Harvey Weinstein allegations came to light last fall and women in Hollywood began to speak their truth, it was a real eye-opener for me. I had been in work situations where I had been sexually harassed and never felt like I had the power to speak up. That all changed for me in the #MeToo era.

The tsunami of stories from thousands of women in the workplace — in every industry and in every city — made me rethink what type of businesses and even TV shows I was supporting. Who was creating a powerful space for women to speak, think and be creative? Certainly not the Bachelor franchise.

I watched the early seasons of The Bachelor because it was fascinating to watch. From the first season with Alex Michel to gasping at Trista Rehn (now Sutter) walking down the aisle with Ryan Sutter in a sea of pink, I was hooked. I eventually fell out of love with the series after a few seasons because it was just boring.

More: Here’s What’s Not Happening at The Bachelorette: Men Tell All

Then Twitter came along, and it was one of the best series to hate-watch. There was always someone to make fun of — the girl who was desperate to get married on the first episode, the girl who drinks too much and the villain who makes every episode delicious.

Doubts kept creeping into my mind over the seasons when I felt bad for some of these women. Why would they subject themselves to such editing on a show that clearly favors the men? Even watching the first season of the fictional UnReal gave viewers a Hollywood look at the wizard behind the curtain when it comes to producer manipulation of storylines.

I still showed up to watch, but I really started to put on the brakes when the Bachelor in Paradise scandal with Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson emerged. ABC and executive producer Mike Fleiss were OK with contestants drinking unlimited amounts of alcohol until it put one producer into the uncomfortable situation of breaking up a drunken hookup. The incident halted filming and required new rules about consent and drinking on the Bachelor portfolio of shows.

You would think that particular scandal along with the influx of #MeToo stories would enlighten the producers to create a more empowering show. Unfortunately, the narrative took a sharp turn left during Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s season. He chose to allow the producers to film his breakup with fiancée Becca Kufrin instead of doing it the classy way — privately. The Bachelor audience isn't owed anything when it comes to breakups.

Instead of Kufrin having control over her story and how it ended, she was subjected to a humiliating dumping in front of millions. While Luyendyk kept returning to the scene of the crime and badgering Kufrin to make sure she was OK even though she was asking him to leave. It was like watching harassment in the workplace, and that's when I knew The Bachelor producers had learned nothing over the last six months.

More: All the  Bachelor  Scandals Through the Years

Kufrin thought she was taking control of her narrative by becoming The Bachelorette, yet her season has been mired in controversy, with one contestant convicted of indecent assault and battery and another contestant's social media history revealing some less-than-savory views. The Bachelor franchise has one public-relations disaster after another, and I've decided that — for me — it isn't OK to watch this show anymore.

That's the great thing about choice and empowerment, though. Many of you will continue to hate-watch the show on social media while some of you will have a girls' night in filled with endless glasses of rosé because it's your guilty pleasure. The show isn't going anywhere, but I do think it feels a little tarnished in the #MeToo era.

Carrie Underwood Is Pregnant Again & Her Announcement Is Too Cute

A big congrats are in order for country music queen Carrie Underwood! On Wednesday morning, the Nashville-based singer announced via Instagram that she and husband Mike Fisher are expanding their brood. That’s right — 3-year-old Isaiah Michael is getting a sibling, and Underwood delivered (do you see what we did there?) the news in the cutest way.

“You might be wondering or asking, ‘Carrie, why is your tour starting in May?’ Well… yay!” she said in a video message, panning out to reveal balloons spelling out “BABY” over her head. “Mike and Isaiah and I are absolutely over the moon excited to be adding another little fish to our pond.”

You also may have caught that Underwood revealed more than just the news of another baby in the announcement. In addition to expecting her second child, she is going to be kicking off her Cry Pretty 360 tour in 2019, too. This. Is. Wild.

The new tour will feature a new middle-of-the-arena-floor stage, allowing fans a view no matter where they are situated —hence the “360” in the tour title. The fun will officially kick off on May 1 in Greensboro, North Carolina, and will see Underwood play 55 arenas across the country and Canada.

“This has just been a dream come true with album and with baby news and all that stuff. We’re just so excited and just so glad you guys can share in this with us and be a part of this with us. Love you guys! We will see you on the road in 2019,” Underwood said.

In the video, the seven-time Grammy winner alluded to that album — Cry Pretty — which she’s been hard at work on for the last year. That album will be available Sept. 14 of this year. In an August interview with Redbook, Underwood noted that this endeavor feels “much more me” than her previous five.

“I had time and space and creative license in a way I haven’t before,” she said of being a co-producer for the first time. “I got to do the dirty work.”

In the same interview, Underwood lamented that having more kids might not be an option, saying, “I’m 35, so we may have missed our chance to have a big family. We always talk about adoption and about doing it when our child or children are a little older.”

And happily for Underwood, it would appear that casual “or children” in her comment is already coming to fruition.

So, if Underwood is around three months pregnant now — just outside of the first trimester, for those who are curious —that would put her new little bundle of joy is joining the family in March or April of 2019. That gives Underwood room for some quality time with baby before hitting the road on May with openers Maddie & Tae and Runaway June.

This woman is doing it all, y’all!

A baby, a new album, a tour, co-hosting the CMAs in November, mom’ing… we’re exhausted just thinking about it. Cry Pretty 360 tour tickets go on sale Aug. 17 at 10 a.m., so maybe we’ll pick up some tickets and keep our fingers crossed that some of Underwood's endless energy and positivity will rub off on the rest of us.

Tiffani Thiessen Finally Reveals Whether Kelly Kapowski Was a Feminist

If you ask anyone who grew up watching the iconic teen sitcom Saved by the Bell who the feminist of the show was, they'd probably point to Elizabeth Berkley, who played the studious and empowered character Jessie Spano. But what about Kelly Kapowski? Was she a low-key feminist too?

She may not have been as vocal about women's rights and social injustices as Jessie, but in her own way, Kelly was a feminist according to Tiffani Thiessen, who played the hardworking cheerleader on the show.

When asked whether Kelly was a feminist, Thiessen told the audience at the #BlogHer18 Creators Summit in New York City, "I think she may have been without knowing it."

More: Saved by the Bell: A Look at Zack Morris & the Gang Today

Thiessen points to Jessie as the show's most obvious feminist, but says that Kelly was a strong woman as well.

"They created the character of her having a lot of brothers and sisters, which was all about sharing and having to be all about family, and [they] didn’t have a lot of money," she explains. "So she made her mark by the little she had, and there’s something so empowering about that too in a different way."

When you think about it, it makes sense: Kelly was a good student, kind to others and never turned down an extra shift at The Max to help support her family. She also managed to find time for her friends, siblings, cheerleading, performing in Hot Sundae and various romantic relationships, most notably with large cell phone owner Zack Morris. Who knew Bayside was such a feminist breeding ground?

This Is Meghan Markle's Favorite Recipe of All Time, & It's Perfect for Fall

Hey, it's not our fault we're already thinking about the fall season and everything that comes with it. Retailers like Target and Spirit Halloween are already selling Halloween decor, and Starbucks has already started reminding us that PSL season is almost here, whether they realize it or not (we just found out they have a secret Facebook group called "the Leaf Rakers' Society" for people who love fall). And now, thanks to Bustle, we’re obsessing over Meghan Markle’s favorite recipe of all time — one that’ll fit right in this fall.

More: Meghan Markle Is Banned From Eating This Food While Traveling

Remember when Meghan, before she was the Duchess of Sussex, had her own lifestyle blog called The Tig? On the site, she covered everything from food and travel to beauty and fashion. Although Meghan bid farewell to the site before she became royalty, you can still revisit previously posted articles thanks to a little thing called the Wayback Machine, which archives old content on the web. You can click on wellness tips, a coconut chai smoothie recipe and even check out photos from her trip to Greece in 2016.

But there's one piece of content not currently on the site: a pumpkin fondue recipe. "I am going to go out on a limb here and say that this may be my favorite recipe of all time," she wrote on The Tig about the recipe. "A bold statement, indeed."

Bloglovin' has blog post and the full recipe on its site, though — a recipe Meghan describes as "equal parts satisfying, indulgent, shareable, and perhaps the easiest thing you’ve ever made." She goes on to say that the recipe was crafted by LA and New York food editor and restaurant critic, Ruth Reichl.

"She calls it a 'Swiss pumpkin.' I call it the best f%^ing thing I've ever eaten," Meghan wrote.

OK, we've read and talked about this enough. Let's get to the recipe.

More: The Queen Has Meghan Markle's Next Six Months All Planned Out

The pumpkin fondue recipe calls for eight ingredients, including Gruyère cheese, and the directions are simple enough. Basically, you just layer ingredients, whisk others, pour it into a pumpkin and bake the fondue directly in said pumpkin for a couple of hours. We're in love.

Here's the full recipe. We don’t care that it’s only August; we gotta go grab these ingredients and make it, like, now.

Thomas Rhett & Lauren Akins: What to Know About Country Music's Cutest Family

Honestly, we've been in love with Thomas Rhett and his wife, Lauren Akins, ever since they showed up on our radar at the 2016 American Country Music Awards — and again when  baby Akins arrived in August 2017.

"Our baby girl is here," Akins captions an adorable photo on Instagram. "Sweet Ada James

"Our baby girl is here," Akins captions an adorable photo on Instagram. "Sweet Ada James Akins came into the world at 10:28 last night after almost 36 hours of labor (only Jesus got me through that-& she is sooo worth it). She weighs 7 pounds 3 ounces and is so stinking cute I just can't take it! We are all doing well now, just resting. Thank y'all for your prayers-she is a miracle and God is so good. Thomas Rhett and I are so I love with her."

We may have thought they couldn't get any more adorable than they were at the '16 CMAs when Rhett took home the award for Single Record of the Year for "Die a Happy Man," but we were totally wrong. This sweet duo just keeps growing on us.

Here's why.

More: These 23 Celeb Marriages That Have Lasted Are Defying All the Hollywood Odds

1. They just adopted a little girl

In fall 2016, Rhett and Akins began the process of adopting a child from Africa, and in May 2017, they finally brought their baby girl home.

"YALL... Our baby girl is hommmmeeeeee," Akins captioned a sweet set of photos on Instagram. "Thank you Jesus for bringing our family together on the same continent finally :) little cutie Willa Gray Akins came home yesterday after completely stealing our hearts in Uganda over a year ago & we're sooooo happy we just can't stand it."

And what does Willa Gray think of the new arrival?

"Willa Gray is so excited to finally have a baby sister," Akins wrote on Instagram.

2. Their pregnancy announcement was adorbs

Just a couple of months after their adoption announcement, they discovered that Akins was pregnant with Ada.

The couple took to Instagram in February to share the news.

"OH BABY! actually...BABIES!" Akins captioned a pic. "Our hearts are exploding with happiness for y'all to meet our new baby who we are bringing home from Africa soon who is also going to have a little brother or sister because, SURPRISE! there's a sweet baby in my belly too."

If that isn't the sweetest thing you've ever heard, we don't know what is.

3. They've known each other since first grade

Just in case you didn't think this pair could get any cuter, get this: Rhett and Akins have known each other since they were around 6 years old! Ain't that a song just waiting to be written.

4. They dated when they were 15...

...but they broke up. Rhett told Taste of Country that he and his wife, then Lauren Gregory, dated for six months when they were 15. Sadly, though, it didn't work out. They stayed friends and wound up dating other people. "I don’t think she really noticed me till we were 16,” Rhett said. He then added, “When I heard that she had ended her other relationship, I moved in for the kill. We kissed, and that was it.”

5. He can thank his father-in-law for getting them back to together

Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins

That's right, Rhett's future father-in-law interceded — when Rhett and Akins almost married other people.

"Her dad called me and said, 'If you don't come over here tonight and tell Lauren how you feel about her, then I'm going to tell her how you feel about her," Rhett told CBS.

6. They got engaged around Christmas

Rhett and Akins got engaged in December 2011. Rhett popped the question at Akins' favorite Nashville restaurant, Giovanni's.

“There was a [wine] bottle, and with a silver Sharpie, I wrote, ‘Marry me?’ on the bottle, and she wrote ‘Well, duh, yes’ on the bottle,” Rhett told radio station Y108. “Somebody cued 'The Way You Look Tonight' by Frank Sinatra, and we danced in this little cigar room. It was pretty awesome.”

7. They wed in October 2012 outside of Nashville, Tennessee

And yes, there's a video of their wedding. Dying.

8. Akins keeps Rhett humble

Just because Rhett is a country superstar, it doesn't mean it's all about him. “I’ve even come home a lot of the time and talked about what I did on the road and what songs I’m gonna cut, and then I realized I haven’t even asked my wife how her day was,” Rhett told Taste of Country. “So I think this business can be very consuming for some people. But thank goodness that my wife is there to call me out every single time, so my head shrinks a little bit.”

9. Rhett made a YouTube video of their fairy tale

Well, if you watch the video, you'll see that it wasn't all a fairy tale. The pair spent a long time being friends while Rhett tried to win her over. But, in the end, love prevailed. So cute!

10. Rhett had to persuade Akins to be in his video

Rhett's "Die a Happy Man" video features his wife (and himself) in Hawaii, being all loved up. However, Akins wasn't super keen on being in the video at first.

"It took a lot of convincing to get her to do it," Rhett told Billboard, despite the fact that she's the inspiration behind the hit song.

"We were in the car, and Tim McGraw's 'Just to See You Smile' came on," Akins recalled. "I was like, 'Babe, people don't write songs like this anymore. It's so sweet — it just melts your heart. Write a song like that! About something besides whiskey, beer or taking a girl home in a big truck.'"

And thus, "Die a Happy Man" was born.

Brooklyn Decker's Advice for Dealing With Rejection & Starting a Business

While multitalented actor Brooklyn Decker may be best known for her roles in Just Go With It and Grace and Frankie, the 31-year-old is also the cofounder of Finery, a closet-organizing app that helps busy women plan their outfits. Featured in publications such as Forbes, People, Bustle, Elle and WWD, the app has been well received since launching in 2017. But at the #BlogHer18 Creators Summit on Wednesday, it wasn’t just Finery's success that Decker wanted to talk about, it was also the challenges and obstacles that came with getting it off the ground.

More: Brooklyn Decker Tells Us Why She Became a Tech Entrepreneur

Addressing a packed audience, Decker told moderator Sophia Chabbott — the digital director for WWD — that rejection happens to everyone, but it doesn't (and shouldn't) define you. She believes that it's what you do in the wake of failure that matters most. "No is an invitation — a message to work harder," she said.

That resilient attitude is something Decker attributes to her own career experience. “With films, acting and modeling, you're constantly working on new projects, so you have to be really, really malleable and [learn how to] deal with rejection," she said. "You're constantly pivoting and adjusting.” It might sound like a master skill, but it's one Decker encourages everyone to work on — especially entrepreneurs, who are bound to face an uphill battle before succeeding.

Decker took the stage alongside cofounder and CEO of Finery, Whitney Casey, and while the pair talked about numerous things, Decker spoke about the importance of entering into business partnerships with the right people. “You have to be able to fight well, because things will come up and you will have disagreements," she said. "You have to be able to completely disagree and still ultimately respect one another to find the optimal solution."

More: Brooklyn Decker Dreams Son Hank Will Marry Luna Legend Someday

As for the future of women in business, in spite of the discrimination our gender still faces, Decker believes the landscape is rife with opportunity. “It’s a really exciting time because there are women wanting and trying to pave the way. There was a study last year that said female CEOs have more 10 times more success than male CEOs, so let’s invest in female-founded and -run companies," she said. "Stats are dismal, but there’s an uptick and upward mobility in funding. Now more than ever, we need to say yes to female entrepreneurs."
