Predictions for the 2013 Academy of Country Music Awards

The ACM Awards are sure to present a memorable evening, but what are the things that could happen that will leave us talking about the show Monday morning ?

With so many awards shows throughout the year, sometime it's hard to keep them straight. But the Academy of Country Music Awards may just have a few tricks up their sleeves which will make Sunday, April 7, a memorable night. Here are our predictions for the ACM Awards.

Two of the biggest awards may be the most surprising. Entertainer of the Year and New Artist of the Year will be decided by fan voting. This means anything can happen. While ACM members did choose the nominees, the final decision will be completely in the hands of the fans.

There will be plenty of Mr. and Mrs. Blake Shelton.Blake Shelton will be co-hosting the show, along with Luke Bryan. Shelton's wife Miranda Lambert is also up for three awards. The couple tend to steal the spotlight anywhere they go, and there is a good chance the ACM Awards will be no different.

Taylor Swift won’t win anything.Taylor Swift has officially made her transition to the world of pop. While the ACM Awards still consider her a country artist , the voters may disagree. If Swift does win anything, it would likely be Entertainer of the Year. But if other awards shows this season were any indication, Carrie Underwood now seems to win any award that both she and Taylor Swift are nominated for , and Underwood is also nominated for Entertainer of the Year.

The performances will steal the show. A large percentage of the nominees are performing at the 2013 ACM Awards, and the show sure will be diverse. Old school country stars like Tim McGraw and George Strait will be performing, along with more modern country stars. These include Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan. To shake things up a little, a few pop stars will be making their appearances, including Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson.

The hosting team will bring an entertaining evening that will be full of the best in country music. Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan are at the top of the industry and both have mastered the art of a stage persona. What may be especially entertaining is the two singers are both up for an award in the biggest category of the night, Entertainer of the Year. The competition may create a sort of cat fight between the two, and it could change the personality of the show, which could create either tension or hilarity.

Don Draper would not approve of our shenanigans.

Mad Men BingoMad Men offers so much to love: The generational sexism, the amazing clothes, the interweaving of real historical events, watching as each of the cast members deals with his or her own stuff and, yeah, Don Draper . The storylines are intriguing. The work the admen do is fascinating. The trouble they get into is amusing. But the characters themselves — their dialogue, moods and quirks — that's what we truly love. Well, that and their ability to hold liquor.

The one and only Mad Men Season 6 promo>>

In honor of the new season, grab a drink... preferably scotch or vodka . Let's get Mad Men wasted.

Mad Men Bingo

Mad Men drinking game

We've made up a few Mad Men Bingo boards, which you can download here. Each square contains a Mad Men intricacy, like "Someone drives drunk," or "Don rolls his eyes." Some things happen more often than others, and some moments appear on more than one card. Plus, don't forget to look out for that free space — it's an easy one!

This game doesn't have to be played with alcohol, but we strongly recommmend it. If you want to play the fun version, line up some full shot glasses in front of you. Each time something from one of your squares happens, take a shot and put the empty shot glass on the square. If you're dry, just use chips or a stamp to mark your boards — whatever you have on hand will work. Since you can always print more, you could even just mark off your boards with a marker.

Jon Hamm has a porn-laced past!>>

Just as in regular bingo, the first person to make a straight line is the winner !

So, drink up and play hard, you mad fans of Mad Men. You've waited months for this premiere, and you deserve a little fun.

We live in a breakneck, competitive society where everything is very go, go, GO! But this kind of trading-floor frenzy is not conducive to building a business or charting a career path. That kind of planning takes real thought and careful strategizing. Pluto retrograde on Friday begs the question if you have gone as far as you can go. Have you reached the summit of what you can do? If so, then you may have to climb down off that peak. It’s the only way to get to the new and higher one that you will soon be setting your sights on.

It’s the only way to get to the new and higher one that you will soon be setting your sights on.

aries

ARIES

Everybody heard you the first time. It’s hard to remember when you have so many planets passing through your zodiac sign, because the cosmic influence is apt to make you pushy, impatient, and LOUD. Nevertheless, you do have your colleagues’ support and they definitely have your back, so feel free to launch your most ambitious projects on Wednesday and Friday. Not only will these sail over the walls of naysayers, but they will hit their target audience.

taurus

TAURUS

One chapter of your career is coming to a close while a new one is just beginning. It’s hard to see this current transition as being a good one because it looks like you’re losing so many things. You could be facing a demotion, a drop in salary, or a cutback in hours as you move from one department to another. But think of it as a plant being transplanted into a new pot. Once over the shock, you’ll branch out in new and vigorous ways.

gemini

GEMINI

Pluto retrograde on the 12th shows that someone you’ve been doing business with will be picking up his toys and departing the sandbox. It’s not the most mature thing to do — especially when you were so close to working out your differences — but it’s better for you in the long run. You’ve spent too many sleepless nights trying to figure out how to please someone who just wasn't going to be pleased. But don’t worry. You’ll find a better fit on April 25.

cancer

CANCER

This is one week when you don’t want to miss a day of work because you could find yourself transported from the back of the line to the head of the pack in the blink of an eye. The New Moon on Wednesday will bring some exciting and unexpected developments, and you’re in the position to capitalize on each and every one of them. This is the big break that you’ve been looking for, so get ready to rock.

leo

LEO

The New Moon on Wednesday is an important one for you — especially if you travel for work. What may not look like much at first promises to yield more than what you expect. People really come alive when you walk into the room and your personal presence makes all the difference. If you don't travel for work, then you can expect to hear good news from far away. Someone could place a big order with your company or you may be invited to interview with a competitor who’s been tracking your progress.

virgo

VIRGO

If things aren’t coming together in the way that you like, then it means that you’re trying to force a fit. This is never a good thing, even if deadline pressures are forcing you to salvage the situation. There is always time to dismantle and to reconstruct again. This could make a supervisor see red on Wednesday, but the simple truth is that it’s more cost-effective to get things right the first time than it is to go back and try to fix them later.

libra

LIBRA

Pluto turning retrograde on Friday will slow down the wheels of progress. It won’t inhibit your forward movement, but things will take longer than you think to pan out. It’s important to work with planetary retrogrades even if they are devilishly frustrating. Pluto won’t come out of retrograde until Sept. 21. It seems like a long way off but when you discover how things weren’t as ready as you thought, then you’ll appreciate how you need this time to get your business house in order.

scorpio

SCORPIO

You will need to take charge like you never have before at work this week. There is a lot of volatile energy surrounding a particular project, enterprise, or sale and things could fall apart on Friday. Of course it’s when things get this heated that co-workers race to dive down their rabbit holes. Thankfully you were born under a sign that can make decisions in the moment and stand by them. Anything you do will be right because things were barely held together by spit and glue anyway.

sagittarius

SAGITTARIUS

You’ll be glad to know that there’s financial relief when Pluto turns retrograde on the 12th. It doesn’t mean that you’re free and clear, but at least you’ll be able to see the forest for the trees and that’s a step in the right direction. Set up payment plans rather than paying down debts in huge fell swoops and you’ll make progress. You have until September 21 to get your money house in order. That’s when Pluto will come out of retrograde.

capricorn

CAPRICORN

The collection of planets at the bottom of your chart shows that there’s money to be made at home. Maybe you’re ready to start working out of your house or this is the week when you go into business for yourself and run everything out of your home office. The New Moon on April 10 is extremely favorable for buying or selling property as well as for refinancing. Terms will be to your liking. The 17th or 24th are auspicious dates for finalizing deals.

aquarius

AQUARIUS

You’re pretty laid back at work until somebody crosses the line. And it looks like a certain colleague will be doing exactly that on April 9 or 10. You’d love to let it go — you’re not one to go running off to HR every time there’s a “crisis” — but the problem has been building for weeks. You may have to give this person a dressing down on Friday along with some wing-clipping, but it’s better that this comes from you than the higher-ups.

pisces

PISCES

Wednesday is your make-or-break day regarding a financial matter. This could pertain to a sale, a deal, or the resolution of a dispute. The New Moon in Aries shows that there is a lot at stake so you can expect exchanges to be heated and provocative. Your reaction will be “I don’t need this,” but in fact, you do. Don’t yield the field when you’re on the brink of winning it all.

Actresses Jaime Pressly and Estelle Warren caused a fracas over the weekend at a Hollywood club after Pressly accused the model of taking off with her assistant's purse.

Jaime Pressly leaving Chateau Marmont

Police were called to the scene after a birthday party went sour at a Hollywood club, according to Us Weekly, which reports that things got ugly between actresses Jaime Pressly and Estella Warren after Pressly accused Warren of stealing her assistant's purse.

According to Us Weekly, Pressly, 35, and Warren, 34, were at a party at Hollywood hot spot Bootsy Bellows on Friday night when Pressly's assistant's purse went missing.

Using the iPhone's "find my phone" app, the star and her assistant located the phone, inside the missing purse where Warren and her friends were gathered.

Jaime Pressly files for divorce>>

Give it back, said Pressly and her assistant. Nope, it's mine, countered Warren.

"Jaime was trying to get it back," a source told Us Weekly. "She wasn't aggressive, but she was forceful."

Pressly's assistant's stuff was inside the purse; Warren still claimed it was hers.

Drugs were allegedly also found inside the purse; Pressly and her assistant disavowed knowledge of those.

Eventually, police were called; they made a theft report at 2 a.m.

Estella Warren predictably heads to rehab>>

Neither actress has publicly commented, however, Warren tweeted a telling message Saturday: "No mind, no thought, no reflection, no analysis, no cultivation, no intention... let it settle itself."

Both actresses have had previous run-ins with the law. Warren was arrested in 2011 after she hit three parked cars in Los Angeles and then fled the scene. Police found her and arrested her for DUI, and for felony battery on an officer when she resisted arrest.

Also in 2011, Pressly was arrested on suspicion of DUI in California, the Huffington Post reported. She later pleaded no contest.

Police in Hollywood told Us Weekly the matter is still under investigation.

Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher dead at 87

Great Britain's first female prime minister Margaret Thatcher has died. She was 87 years old.

Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher, Great Britain's first female prime minister and its longest-serving of the 20th century, has died at the age of 87.

"It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning," confirmed Lord Timothy Bell today. "A further statement will be made later."

See the trailer for The Iron Lady>>

During her long political career, Thatcher became known as the Iron Lady for her firm hand in guiding her nation back to prosperity with privatization, budget cuts, and limiting trade union influence. She stood up to union leaders and foreign enemies alike — and the opposition always blinked first.

A close friend and ally of Ronald Reagan, she was instrumental in convincing Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to end Communist rule. "Margaret Thatcher was a great politician and a bright individual. She will do down in our memory and in history," Gorbachev told Interfax. "Our first meeting in 1984 gave the start to relations that were at times difficult, not always smooth, but which were serious and responsible for us both."

Margaret Thatcher's famous handbag held surprising power>>

Added Poland's former president and anti-Communist leader Lech Walesa, "She was a great person. She did a great deal for the world, along with Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II and solidarity, she contributed to the demise of communism in Poland and Central Europe."

In a written statement, President Obama said, "As an unapologetic supporter of our transatlantic alliance, she knew that with strength and resolve we could win the Cold War and extend freedom's promise."

"With the passing of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, the world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty, and America has lost a true friend."

In her later years, Thatcher struggled with a series of small strokes and dementia.

What Justin Bieber and Jenna Jameson have in common

What is up with the rash of celebrity assault charges lately? Didn’t these celebs attend the first week of kindergarten where we learn not to hit, scratch, bite and spit on other people? Here are a few celebs who need a refresher on how to get along with others...

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber

Hard to believe this little pint-size wonder, or “punk” as his neighbor likes to call him, seems to be racking up battery charges — as in more than one. In a group that already includes an ex-bodyguard and a photographer, we’ll throw in a disgruntled neighbor who is pressing charges after Bieber allegedly assaulted and spit on him. It might be time for The Biebs’ mom to take the “too big for his britches”over her knee. The Biebs maintains he’s in control, but from where we’re sitting, the jury is still out.

Jenna Jameson

Jenna Jameson

You mess with an ex-porn star, you get the horns, or something like that. Jenna's real birthday is April 9, but that didn’t keep her from kicking things off in Newport Beach, California, on April 7, where she was arrested for battery. Details have been a bit vague, but the birthday girl allegedly got into an altercation, was placed under citizen’s arrest by the “victim,” and arrested by a nearby cop. Jenna doesn’t seem to do well with birthdays — last May, she got a DUI after driving a pole, uh, into a pole. Geez, whatever happened to celebrating your birthday by having a hot naked guy hop out of a life-size birthday cake?

Jaime Pressly

Jaime Pressly/ Estella Warren

My Name is Earl star Jaime Pressly also threw down at a birthday bash on April 5 when she discovered what she believed to be her assistant’s missing purse in Warren’s possession. In an altercation that smacks of Earl’s ex-wife Joy, Pressly allegedly confronted Warren who said the purse belonged to her, even though Pressly’s assistant’s possessions were supposedly in the purse. No assault charges have been filed. What was Warren thinking? What was Pressly thinking? Big dummies.

Sexting laws: What parents need to know

We’ve all had that conversation warning our teens not to take any lewd pictures of themselves or others — maybe more than once. This also applies to forwarding a picture that was sent to him. There are constantly changing laws about sexting that you may not know about. What’s your liability, and what can police take if your child is suspected of passing along pornographic materials?
Teen shocked by sext message

Penalties for parents?

We’ve all had that conversation warning our teens not to take any lewd pictures of themselves or others — maybe more than once. This also applies to forwarding a picture that was sent to him.

There are constantly changing laws about sexting that you may not know about. What’s your liability, and what can police take if your child is suspected of passing along pornographic materials?

Teens have always flirted with the opposite sex, but technology has put a whole new spin on the act. Teens — both boys and girls — are sending and receiving naked pictures of themselves, citing flirting or peer pressure as the reason for the sext. Not only is this a bad idea, but it’s also considered a pretty serious crime in most states.

Sexting more common than you think

Parents may prefer to think these are isolated cases, but sexting is a common occurrence in the life of today’s teens.

"... 28 percent of the students followed through and had sent a naked picture of themselves through text or email."

According to research published in the July 2012 issue of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, an astounding 57 percent had been asked to send a sext. While most of these teens admitted to being bothered by the request, 28 percent of the students followed through and had sent a naked picture of themselves through text or email.

Officials investigating a recent case in a Cincinnati-area high school say hundreds of students may have been involved in recent cases of sexting. In January, up to eight cell phones belonging to high school students were confiscated and found to have videos on them made by a male student, who has since been expelled, according to police. The student involved has been charged with pandering obscenities involving a minor, which is a felony.

Consequences are real

Why do teens continue to send, receive and share sexts when there are serious consequences for being involved on any level? "I think the majority of them, they don't understand or realize the consequences criminally, let alone if that were to get out on the internet," says Madeira Chief Frank Maupin, regarding the Ohio case. As with drinking and driving or unprotected sex, many teens feel invincible — that bad things won’t happen to them.

Consequences for sexting are potentially very serious. "It's a felony in the second degree," says M.J. Donovan, lawyer for the Ohio teen charged with four felony counts. "It's the second highest felony in the state of Ohio." While the Ohio law was intended to protect children from exploitation and harm, teen sexting cases fall right into the same category — and same consequences, even when consenting teens are involved. "No one took advantage of him, no one exploited him," she contends. "This is something he did in and of himself and he was not harmed." In many states, teens involved in a sexting case — even if they only shared the image in question — may be required to register as a sex offender.

State laws vary

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures at least 13 states introduced bills or resolutions in 2012 that were aimed at sexting — Hawaii, New York, Pennsylvania and South Dakota all enacted new legislation that year.

"Police can confiscate family computers and cell phones when investigating your child’s involvement in a sexting case."

At least 20 states and Guam have enacted bills addressing the issue of sexting and minors since 2009. All 50 states have laws in place to protect minors from exploitation through the distribution of sexually explicit images.

Police can confiscate family computers and cell phones when investigating your child’s involvement in a sexting case. Parents have ultimate responsibility for electronic use within the household, and can potentially be charged for damages caused by their minor child's involvement in distributing lewd images.

If your state doesn’t have a specific law about teen sexting, the case will fall under child pornography laws, and garner up to three potential felony charges.

  • Possession of child pornography, even if your teen isn’t in the picture
  • Distribution or sharing a photo, regardless of who is in the picture
  • Promoting means taking the picture, even if the teen takes it of herself

The difficulty lies in drawing distinctions between a pedophile who trolls the internet for child pornography and the high school girl who sends a flirty nude shot to her boyfriend. Interpreting the law as strict violation of child pornography laws can land many teens in hot water, and jeopardize the rest of their lives.

Bottom line

If you have teens, you can’t have this conversation with them often enough. Don’t just talk about sexting once and let it go — the conversation needs to be ongoing. In this new modern age where every last little email and image lives in cyberspace, we need to help our teens develop a digital footprint they can be proud of, not live in fear of. The consequences of a split-second decision can be devastating for your teen.

How bad are GMOs really?

$

Genetically modified organisms are vilified by many. However, GMOs aren't part of some master villain's nefarious plan! Why do so many people dislike them? Are they as bad as everyone says? What are the risks associated with them?

GMO tomato

GMOs are awful, vile things that should never be eaten by anyone, ever. If you follow much of the food debate, undoubtedly you've heard someone utter that statement or something similar to it. A lot of food pundits are highly against GMOs and many hope to have them permanently removed from the American and international food supply.

A careful look at both sides of the issue

GMO apple

Perhaps in a perfect world, there would be few, if any, genetically modified foods. However, given the demands of the modern food supply, it may prove difficult to eliminate them and maintain our current food access. The matter is further muddled by the fact that not all genetic modifications are created the same and range from invasive and nearly indefensible modifications to less intrusive modifications. Here, then, is an attempt to cut through the emotions and haze that surrounds this issue and discuss why we have GMO foods. There won't be judgments on GMOs as a whole, but rather an attempt at clarity on this at-times divisive issue.

However, before we can look at the arguments for and against genetically modified organisms , let's talk about what they are. For the purposes of this discussion, "GMO" refers to foods that have had part of their genetic structure changed through mutation, insertion of new genes or deletion of existing ones using techniques outside naturally occurring processes. In other words, GMO foods come from seeds and stock made with science in a lab, not pollination and crossbreeding in the field. Is it okay to let biotechnology make genetic modifications to our food instead of letting nature do it? Let's find out.

Pro: Hardier crops

Scientists didn't decide to tamper with the genetic structure of the food we eat for the fun of it. Much of the work and research that went into GMO crops was to produce food that can last longer and is better able to stand transport from field to table. Given the nature of our current food industry where it can take days for harvested fruits and vegetables to reach the store, having food that is resistant to aging and the rigors of transportation isn't a bad thing. In fact, it actually keeps food costs down because it reduces spoilage and leads to more food on the shelf.

Pro: Tailoring for specific environments

Not only are GMO foods hardier for transport, they're also hardier in the field. GMO crops can be modified so they grow with less fertilizer, pesticide, water, in warmer or colder temperatures, etc. The end results are seeds that yield more per acre than non-GMO seeds, which is not a bad thing for the farmers who have to earn a living selling their crops.

Con: Some seeds are no longer viable

One of the less beneficial factors to consider when planting GMO crops is that often the seeds are not viable, which means you cannot save the seeds and replant them next year. This is obviously unnatural as the whole point of seeds is to carry on the plant line. Having seeds that cannot reproduce can endanger our food supply in times of crisis and forces growers to repurchase their seeds year after year.

Con: Some contain strange allergens

One of the stranger side effects of genetically modifying foods comes when you splice together genes from different strains of food. For instance, in the '90s, scientists attempted to make tomatoes hardier by mixing tomato and peanut genes. This produced a stronger plant, but it also caused people with peanut allergies to have terrible allergic reactions and, in a few cases, die. While we hope that scientists have learned their lessons from these episodes, there may still be non-obvious mixtures in the future that could cause as-yet unknown health risks.

The verdict

It falls to each of us to determine whether we are going to buy GMO foods or not. The important thing is to be educated on why the issue of GMO crops is important and to make the decision that is right for each of us.

5 Ways Margaret Thatcher pioneered life for women

$

Margaret Thatcher, through example, made the world a better place for women. As we digest the passing of one of history’s most impressive and memorable figures, we take a moment to give thanks for the example she set.

Margaret Thatcher

Humble beginnings

Even if Margaret Thatcher had not become the first — and so far only — female Prime Minister of Britain, her accomplishments would have been impressive. Born in 1925 to a grocery store owner, Margaret learned the value of hard work at a young age — working at her father’s grocery stores and getting excellent grades in school. In fact, her academic accomplishments won her a scholarship to study chemistry at Oxford. During an era when women attended university to avail themselves of potential spouses, Thatcher took her studies seriously. Her political ambitions, hard work, intelligence and refusal to allow gender to deter her took her to the highest political office in Britain. What was the takeaway for women? Gender and an upbringing void of privilege were no longer excuses to not succeed.

Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher dead at 87>>

Bucked convention

On her journey to Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher lost several campaigns for smaller government positions — to men — but she never gave up. In 1951, she married Denis Thatcher. Two years later in 1953, Thatcher became a lawyer specializing in taxes and gave birth to twins. Bear in mind Thatcher was doing this during a time when women spent their days in dresses, ironing their husbands’ shirts and exchanging casserole recipes. Even for our generation, where it's expected that we juggle domestic and career duties, it can be difficult to find the support we need. Thatcher proved through hard work, commitment, smarts and a good support system that women can make their mark by fulfilling conventional roles and through successful careers.

banner

There actually is an “i” in “team”

Margaret Thatcher wasn’t called the “Iron Lady” for nothing. She had stones bigger than some of her male counterparts. If she believed in something, she stuck by it and refused to relent to the opinion of her male peers. In an interview with Women’s Own in 1987 Thatcher said, "They are casting their problems at society. And, you know, there's no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look after themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours."

Such strict independence served as an example to women to have the backbone necessary to stand on our own two feet, so we had something to fall back on when life took an unpredicted turn. It reminded us to be self-sufficient and independent, not to the exclusion of others, but so we don’t lose ourselves in others.

Financial matters

Thatcher was both celebrated and vilified for many of her economic policies. What she taught women is that we have the smarts and capability to think outside the box when it comes to financial matters. She demonstrated how to problem-solve our way through economic challenges, something millions of women face. Whether we're single mothers, stay-at-home wives of male breadwinners or young women trying to make ends meet and living paycheck to paycheck, Thatcher reminded us we have as much right to financial talent and control as the next guy.

Our grandmothers, in the spotlight

The Iron Lady reminded many of us of an exaggerated version of our grandmothers. So many of our grandmothers were pioneers, even if it was on a smaller or less public level than Margaret Thatcher. Thatcher inspired us with how she pioneered the concepts of modern-day feminine liberties, much the way our grandmothers pioneered concepts of hard work, dedication and determination in a more personal way. For example, my grandmother wasn’t the first female prime minister of Great Britain. But the woman raised five children without running water, disposable diapers or modern-day appliances, in poverty, and did it all cheerfully.

It is this sort of resilience demonstrated by our grandmothers and public figures like Margaret Thatcher that keeps us grounded when we're having a bad day. If they could do what they did, given their circumstances, certainly we can find solutions to our problems.

Kathy Griffin: Bravo pulled the plug on my talk show

Kathy Griffin confirms that her Bravo talk show, Kathy, is no more. And we all cry.

Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper

"Sad but tru,"Kathy Griffin tweeted this weekend, confirming Perez Hilton's scoop that her talk show, Kathy, is canceled.

Griffin told a stand-up audience in Cincinnati Friday that the deal was done; when Perez Hilton ran a story about it Saturday, Griffin then confirmed the news with her tweet and a link to the story.

Like the legions of other Griffin-lovers, Hilton was sad to hear the news, calling her show "HIGH-larious." Griffin fans apparently didn't watch in high enough numbers to suit Bravo, though "she managed to beat the odds" when the first season didn't do super-well and return for a second season, which started in January.

Kathy Griffin caught going commando on Letterman>>

Alas, the second season didn't improve on the numbers, and a bump from its prime time 10 p.m. slot in February didn't help, Entertainment Weekly points out.

Too bad, since the delicious ginger was the only female late-night talk show host on the air. Sister! We were doing it for ourselves! But no.

Bravo was obviously hoping that Griffin's talk show would catch fire something like Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live. It certainly was a solid plan; the lady performed well for the network for six seasons on My Life on the D-List. But again: No.

Bravo! Kathy Griffin gets a once-a-week talk show!>>

So what's next for Griffin? She's doing a bunch of live comedy dates; she just played Cleveland last night. She tweeted that the crowd had "nice open minds:)."

Last month reports surfaced that Griffin filmed a pilot of some kind of top-secret talk show featuring her and pal Anderson Cooper . RumorFix reported this week that the pilot was pulled together by CNN's new chief, Jeff Zucker, who was the guy behind the Katie Couric/Al Roker/Matt Lauer trio on Today.

Griffin and Anderson skewering the news? Would you watch that?

It's also been rumored Griffin is among the contenders to replace Joy Behar when she leaves The View.

With her Aspie son on the verge of puberty, writer Miriam Kamin is shoring up for a host of new challenges. Her down-to-earth, humorous approach to parenting a child on the autism spectrum provides inspiration to parents who are just beginning the journey of raising a special needs child.

With her son reaching puberty, writer Miriam Kamin is shoring up for new challenges. Her down-to-earth approach is inspiring to parents just beginning the journey of raising a child with special needs.

abandon the 'plan'
and be flexible

Miriam Kamin, author of the popular parenting blog Woulda Coulda Shoulda, is the mom of a teen daughter and a 13-year-old son. Her son was first diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder at the age of 6, and Asperger's syndrome at the age of 9. She shares her autism story, from the early uncertainties of recognizing that “something” was going on to the unique experience of parenting a child who openly discusses his diagnosis.

Reaching for connections

After receiving occupational therapy for a few years for sensory issues, Kamin’s son appeared to be improving. Despite his achievements, her instincts continued to tell her something wasn’t right. “He was still having meltdowns, and he was getting old enough that people were clucking their tongues and making snide comments about our parenting,” Kamin says. “He knew he was different, but he didn't know why. A lot of kids on the spectrum are loners, but he never was. He wanted those social connections he just couldn't seem to master. It was heartbreaking.”

Finding what works

"Life requires flexibility. Sometimes there's a plan, sometimes there isn't one. "

After being diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome at age 9, Kamin’s son benefited from a variety of therapies. “Occupational therapy helped him do everything from adjusting to ‘scratchy’ clothing to eating all kinds of foods,” Kamin says. “Regular talk therapy with a practitioner who specializes in spectrum kids has been very useful, as well, as have various ‘social skills’ groups he's attended.” Not every type of autism therapy worked for the Kamin family. “I know we've seen the greatest amount of growth when we finally abandoned the ‘plan out every minute’ approach and said, ‘Here's the deal. Life requires flexibility. Sometimes there's a plan, sometimes there isn't one. Sometimes the plan changes. So how do we deal with that?’”

Embracing a diagnosis

“I know a lot of people feel like a diagnosis is depressing or daunting. For us, the diagnosis was the start of things getting better,” Kamin says. At 13, her son is proud to be an Aspie, and he’s happy to talk about it. When it comes to calming behaviors and rituals, he’s able to communicate why he acts a certain way and how it feels. “My favorite recent story is that he struck up a conversation with a nice, older lady in a waiting room and went off on a big tangent about algebra, and she was kind enough to say, ‘You must know a lot about math!’ I thought for sure he would just agree, but instead he said, ‘I am pretty good at math, but I have some social difficulties.’ ”

How infertility is impacting my child

My husband and I decided not to shield our 3-1/2-year-old from the daily shots and handfuls of vitamins and herbs, but it wasn’t until recently that I wondered how our quest to have another child might be affecting our son.
Tonya Wertman's son

When your child asks for a sibling

My husband and I decided not to shield our 3-1/2-year-old from the daily shots and handfuls of vitamins and herbs, but it wasn’t until recently that I wondered how our quest to have another child might be affecting our son.

At 3-1/2 years old, our son, Lucas has started asking for a sibling. Some days it's a little sister and others it's a brother. Either way, it's heartbreaking and my only response has been, "Mommy and Daddy are working on it." He has no idea to what extent.

It's not unusual when we are in the middle of a cycle to hear Lucas yell at my husband, "Daddy, you need to give Mommy a shot!" He doesn't know what the shots are for, and as long as I'm not sick, he's happy.

"I can't tell him when we will have another baby."

Sometimes I have to take Lucas with me to an appointment with my reproductive endocrinologist. The staff loves him and looks forward to his visits. He looks forward to playing with my iPhone and enjoying a lollipop while I'm spread eagle getting an ultrasound or having blood drawn. He always asks me if it hurts when the nurse inserts the needle and despite my wincing, I reply, "no."

After the first time Lucas asked when he would have a little brother, I visited my local library and bookstore only to find there isn't a book for parents dealing with secondary infertility to prepare them for this type of conversation with the child/ren they already have. Discussing the topic of infertility with a child is daunting because it's emotional and there is so much uncertainty. I can't tell him when we will have another baby.

What other moms are saying

Jenny C. says her 4-1/2-year-old daughter "doesn't know much more than we want another baby and we hope that it happens, [and] it's hard since she doesn't understand. What hurts more than our desire is hers, to hear her include us in her prayers every night and yearn for a sibling."

Kerry M. adds, "I had to take my 6-year-old to a few of my appointments and I didn't really tell him much. When he asked what they were taking X-rays of, I simply said my 'lady parts.' I told him I'd explain it to him if he wanted, but he opted for 'no!'"

"Our daughter had to be at all of our follicle ultrasounds," says Francie C., "so we were very up front about what we were looking for and why, but we were pretty casual about it with her and never made it a regular topic of conversation so she didn't get amped and heartbroken when things didn't work out."

What the experts say

According to Claudia Pascale, Ph.D. and director of Mental Health Services at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science at Saint Barnabas, New Jersey, "Parents' infertility struggles need not be shared with children until one is pregnant in a stable pregnancy. Children do not have the cognitive capabilities that adults do."

"Parents' infertility struggles need not be shared with children until one is pregnant in a stable pregnancy. "

Dr. Pascale goes on to explain, "I think this is one of the reasons why secondary infertility is so difficult, the parents have one foot in each camp and therefore can’t really adjust to one because she, like primary infertility patients, have not fulfilled their family, but like other parents, feel badly about not being satisfied with what they have. When one is in primary fertility treatment they don’t have to monitor or hide their sadness or difficult feelings from a child but when one is in secondary infertility, the task is so much greater because of having this child already in their lives."

"One can say to a young child that they are having a bad day or feeling sad, which is helpful for a child to see Mommy and Daddy having a bad day every now and then. But if the feelings related to the infertility are interfering in their parenting or care of their child, it is a good idea to find a resource, like a support group or therapist that can help them deal with these feelings," advises Dr. Pascale.

Coping with the guilt

For me there is a huge amount of guilt that comes with struggling with secondary infertility. Sometimes I am so focused on having another child that I feel like Lucas is being slighted. But I have no lack of gratitude for my son and I don't believe that means I can’t long for another baby.

The wonderful thing about children is that they have an innate ability to provide unconditional love and affection even when we are hurting and sad and feel unable to provide the same level of love and affection back. I always try to remember that Lucas does understand on some level and with that my dream of becoming a family of four carries on. I want another baby for me, for my husband, but mostly for our son. I want another baby to make our family more complete.

Planning a wedding and need some fresh ideas on what to serve at your reception? Look no further – we found delicious treats that go above and beyond your traditional wedding reception food.

Wedding reception food livened up

Though you and your new husband may not have time to actually sit down and savor the meal, your guests certainly will! Let's face it — for guests, one of the most memorable aspects of the wedding will be the dinner. Whether you choose to serve an elegant, formal meal or prefer buffet-style, there are plenty of affordable options and ways to spice up traditional wedding reception foods to make yours a little more unique and fun.

Cocktail hour

Typically, the cocktail hour is a reserved time for guests to wine and dine while you and your new husband, bridal party and family take photos. Cocktail hours can vary — with some being relatively simple and others more elaborate. Traditional foods served during the cocktail hour include veggies, meats, cheeses and fruits. To kick it up a notch, we recommend serving:

  • Strawberries dipped in yogurt and frozen
  • A yogurt bar with an array of fresh fruits and granolas
  • Shrimp wontons
  • Bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers
  • Meat and cheese kabobs
  • Individual servings of veggies and dip
spiked lemonade

Cocktail ideas

Whether your wedding is fancy or laid-back, a signature wedding cocktail bar is the perfect addition!

Sit-down dinner

Formal dinners are the norm for traditional wedding receptions. Guests have a choice of what type of meat they'd prefer , and it's served with one side, a house salad and fresh bread with butter. While this can be delicious, consider adding a fun twist to your meal — and saving some money — by serving one of these nontraditional dinner items:

  • Pizza with garlic bread and Caesar salad
  • Chinese or Thai food
  • Barbecue — ribs, hamburgers, pasta salad, potato salad, corn on the cob, coleslaw and cornbread
  • Southern comfort foods — fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans
  • Tropical-themed — ham, pineapple and plenty of shish kabobs

Buffet-style

Though sit-down meals are classy and formal, foodies will agree that nothing beats a good, well-crafted buffet. Buffets allow guests to eat as much or as little of any item they choose — and they can go back for seconds! It's time to look further than serving traditional chickens and potatoes with these wildly unique buffet ideas:

  • An Italian feast — pastas, spaghetti and meatballs, bruschetta, salads and bread
  • A Mexican fiesta — build-your-own tacos, enchiladas, burritos, fajitas and rice and beans
  • A sushi bar — and no, not just sushi sitting on platters — we're talking hiring a sushi chef to slice and dice creations right before your very eyes
  • Buffet stations — set up multiple stations featuring different foods of your choice

Throw in some extra creativity and add a buffet station featuring the bride and groom's favorite dishes and family recipes. This is a fun way for everyone to get a little taste of where you both came from and what you grew up eating.

A few other food-inspired tips

  • Go with a theme — it's easy, fun and memorable
  • Presentation matters — while what you eat is important, how you serve it can be equally — if not more — important
  • Have fun! Don't be ashamed to serve the bride and the groom's favorite foods or something memorable to just the two of you — after all, it's your wedding!

OK, this is kind of awkward: Taylor Swift and Jana Kramer wore very similar gowns to the 2013 ACM Awards. The big question: Who wore it better?

Taylor Swift at the 2013 ACM Awards

Jana Kramer at the 2013 ACM Awards

Someone's stylist is in big trouble today.

Well, we're just assuming someone is in trouble, thanks to the very similar dresses Taylor Swift and actress/singer Jana Kramer wore to the 2012 ACM Awards.

Just look at them: Kramer's Cleopatra-inspired Badgley Mischka creation is way similar to the Dolce & Gabbana gown Swift wore on the red carpet.

Fashion misses at the 2013 ACM Awards >>

We wonder whether either performer had an Anne Hathaway-esque meltdown when she saw the other's dress. Let's hope not — especially since we love both performers. Then again, Swift's fans might not be so forgiving of Brantley Gilbert's fiancée. Serial dater Swift has been the focus of much scrutiny over the 2013 awards season, and fans are getting tired of it.

Need proof? That's why 2013 ACM Awards hosts Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton didn't make jokes about her during Sunday night's telecast.

Best dressed at the 2013 ACM awards >>

"I would tell him [Luke] to be prepared for the onslaught of hatred that will come from Taylor Swift's fan base if you say any sort of a joke or if she's any part of a punch line in the monologue," Shelton joked to the Associated Press before the show.

Regardless, both looked amazing at the ACMs!

Top 10 questions for The Vampire Diaries finale

$
0
0
There are only five episodes left in Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries. With Elijah's hands on the cure and Elena's hands around people's necks, the race for the cure is still anyone's game.

The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Cast

When we last saw The Vampire Diaries, before the hiatus, Elena was killing innocent people to get the Salvatore brothers off her back. Caroline was on the verge of admitting she has feelings for bad boy Klaus . Bonnie was being manipulated by Silas. Katherine gave Elijah the cure to do with as he saw fit. And prom was just around the corner, along with graduation. With so much happening, it's hard to hurry up and wait until the show returns April 18. In the meantime, here are the questions we need answered before Season 4 ends.

1

Whom will Elijah decide deserves the cure?

Elijah in The Vampire Diaries

On the last episode, Katherine handed over the cure. Now, she most likely has ulterior motives, but that doesn't mean things will pan out as she expects. Elijah seemed like he could potentially take pity on Elena and hand the cure over to the Salvatore brothers. Or he could go along with Katherine's plan and give it to Klaus . Let's be honest: The odds aren't looking good that Rebekah will get her hands on it.

2

Will Elena turn her humanity back on?

Elena, Stefan and Damon in The Vampire Diaries

Executive producer Julie Plec has sort of already answered this one for us. According to her, of course Elena won't stay in the dark, emotionless place forever. But we're told the journey back to humanity will get worse before it gets better. We just hope to see it by the end of the season. Emotionless Elena is becoming a downer.

Sneak peek at the next episode>>

3

Is Stefan really moving on from Elena?

Stefan and Elena in The Vampire Diaries

He is so emotionally invested in what happens to her, it's hard to believe Stefan wants to move on. But, as we saw in the last episode, once she regains her humanity, he's ready to part ways. He thinks it's what's best for her. Maybe he's right. Still, we can't imagine there never being a Stefan/Elena romantic rekindling. What would the show be without its infamous love triangle?

4

Is Klaus leaving the show?

The cast of The Originals

The spinoff called The Originals is gaining momentum, which means actor Joseph Morgan will have to part ways with the show in order to fill the lead spot. We hope he doesn't go forever, though. There are only five episodes left before the season ends. It somehow doesn't seem like enough time to completely get our Caroline/Klaus fix. Rebekah and Elijah are also attached to the spin-off. No word yet on their potential departure either.

Joseph Morgan nervous about Vampire Diaries' spin-off The Originals? >>

5

Will the dead return?

Jeremy in The Vampire Diaries

We're going with yes. It would be pretty anticlimactic if the big event the show's been taunting us with all season didn't happen. Plus, we miss Jeremy . Even more exciting, it also means our other favorites from seasons past may return, like Jenna and Alaric.

6

Will Klaus and Caroline finally hook up?

Caroline, Tyler and Klaus in The Vampire Diaries

Come on, this has to happen. With Elena more worried about killing people this season than deciding which Salvatore brother she's interested in, Caroline is the one in the spotlight when it comes to love. The show's been teasing the Caroline/Klaus relationship now for far too long. It just needs to happen already — at least before the end of this season, especially because Klaus may be exiting the show.

7

What will happen to Silas?

Shane in The Vampire Diaries

Silas' entire story line is a bit confusing. He's now close to breaking the veil between here and the other side. Once he does, he wants to take the cure so he can be reunited with his love without the risk of being trapped in purgatory after dying as Qetsiyah originally planned. We have a feeling Silas will indeed break the veil, causing the supernatural dead to return. Somehow we also think our protagonists will find a way to close it again, leaving Silas trapped on the other side.

8

Will Bonnie get rid of her expression?

Bonnie in The Vampire Diaries

Bonnie's magical abilities are getting crazy. She can't control them anymore, and she's perfectly fine with killing 12 innocent people since Silas is brainwashing her. Here's the potential upside: According to Shane, Qetsiyah was only able to create a cure because she was such a strong witch. Perhaps Bonnie is on her way to matching that strength because Silas has been training her. If so, will she be able to create more of the cure on her own?

9

If/When Elena turns her humanity back on, will she still love Damon?

Damon and Elena in The Vampire Diaries

Did she ever truly love Damon ? We finally saw the two of them form a relationship, and, it turns out, Elena was sired by him. While it doesn't completely invalidate the relationship , it means that once her emotions return, she may find herself a confused girl torn between two brothers. Wait, that's not new. In fact, it's just what we've come to love from the show. Here's to the return of the love triangle.

10

Who gets the cure?

Elena in the Vampire Diaries

We're chanting Elena's name from the couch. In the first three seasons, we saw Elena transform from innocent to fighter, training with Alaric so she could fight back against vampires. Then she became a vampire and her brother died and things got depressing. We're hoping Elena will get the cure and turn over a new leaf. We're thinking that when she sees Jeremy after the veil is broken, it will be enough to encourage her to turn her emotions back on. Then she'll take the cure of her own volition.

Celebrity mom Alicia Silverstone might have been criticized by some for her bird-style feeding of her baby boy, but she's not one to shy away from the paparazzi. The Clueless star continued to nurse Bear Blu whenever he was hungry — even when all eyes and cameras were on her.
