Meghan Markle Hints There May Be Another Royal Baby Very Soon

Prince George and Princess Charlotte are getting a baby brother or sister within the next few weeks, and it's looking very likely they'll have a cousin sooner rather than later.

During a visit to Northern Ireland, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry met with the couple who founded Shnuggle, a company that makes innovative baby products. After looking at all the products, Markle told the husband-and-wife team, “I’m sure at some point we’ll need the whole thing," according to People.

“With an upcoming marriage it’s likely there is going to be an announcement in the next few years," Shnuggle founder Sinead Murphy said. "No pressure on the lovely couple!"

But other reports have indicated the next royal baby announcement will be within the next year. Earlier this week Katie Nicholl, royal expert and author of Harry: Life, Loss, and Love, told ET the couple is "very keen to start a family, pretty soon after the royal wedding."

Both Markle and Harry are total naturals with kids. It's no secret Harry absolutely loves being an uncle, and Nicholl shared that Prince George and Princess Charlotte already adore their aunt-to-be. "Meghan is very doting with children," Nicholl said. "She is very maternal and she was thrilled to meet George and Charlotte."

We can look forward to some adorable wedding photos featuring the littlest royals — they'll play the very important roles of page boy and flower girl when Markle and Harry tie the knot in May.

Their love of kids extends beyond their own family. Both Markle and Harry have been involved in philanthropy for years, and much of their charity work focuses on helping underprivileged children. In fact, their shared passion for helping others is reportedly one of the reasons they fell for each other.

Something tells us Markle and Harry will have seriously adorable children. But no pressure or anything.

There Is a Small Chance Becca's Season of The Bachelorette Could Be Canceled

Hasn't poor Becca Kufrin been through enough? ABC already aired her horrifically drawn-out (and exploitive) breakup, unedited, during the season finale special of The Bachelor. It was legitimately difficult to watch because Kufrin's pain was so raw and so real. And then, for some reason, she accepted the role of Bachelorette for the series' upcoming season, even though pretty much everyone agreed that The Bachelor did her dirty for their own personal gain.

More: We Can't Believe the Next Bachelorette Is [SPOILER]

And now... this. Appearing on Kaitlyne Bristowe's podcast Off the Vine, Chris Harrison, the godfather of The Bachelor, made this incredibly rude joke about canceling Kufrin's season if former Bachelor Ben Higgins agreed to come back for another season.

"If Ben would come back... I would cancel Becca's season right now," Harrison said. "If Ben said, 'Hey, dude, let's do this.' But it would be really hard for me. He's a good friend of mine. Ben's a very good friend of mine. I love him dearly. We hang out a lot. We'll go play golf. We talk a lot. We've been through personal stuff together."

I am all for Higgins having another run at being the Bachelor. His season ended well when he got engaged to Lauren Bushnell, and it seemed to genuinely break his heart when they broke up last May. He appeared on the spin-off Bachelor: Winter Games, but on that show, you could see that he was still torn up about the end of his relationship with Bushnell, and he ended up leaving early, telling Harrison that being back on TV was dredging up memories he wasn't ready to face and that he wasn't ready to date again. Plus, Higgins was one of the kindest and most likable Bachelors we've ever seen. It would be great to have him back on the show.

More: How All of Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s Bachelor Exes Reacted to the Finale

But he can return after Kufrin finishes her season. After everything ABC has already put her through, for Harrison to suggest canceling her season to give Higgins another shot, even in jest, is beyond the pale. Everything ABC has done to Kufrin suggests she's nothing to them but a prop for ratings. Her feelings and emotions have been toyed with and cast aside time after time. If I were her, I'd ditch the show now and go find a hot husband on Instagram. She's plenty famous at this point. There's no shortage of quality men who would welcome her into their DMs.

Becca, if you're listening, here are some suggestions. Take your pick of Instagram's most eligible hotties and leave ABC for good. You deserve better.

How Eating Disorders Affect Fertility

Uterus User's Guide

The topic of fertility with an eating disorder is a sensitive one, and to none more than myself. As a person in her late 20s who is in recovery from what I like to call the “eating disorder train,” I constantly wonder how my fertility might be affected. If I decide to have a child down the road, will my chances diminish because of the damage I did to my body through binge-eating or anorexia?

I reached out to a couple of doctors who either specialize in fertility or in eating disorders when researching this article, and the answers might surprise you.

1. Eating disorders can cause infertility, & it’s not just physical

It’s easy to assume anorexia is the only eating disorder that can cause issues both before and during pregnancy because we are malnourished, and malnourishment causes a lot of issues in the body.

However, it’s not the case. Binge-eating disorder is another eating disorder that can cause infertility, especially when associated with obesity. Obesity in young people can result in high levels of male hormones called androgens. Androgen imbalance can cause abnormal menstrual cycles and block ovulation, which can result in infertility.

People who struggle with any type of eating disorder typically have stress due to personality traits like perfectionism and control or mental disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety and depression. The stress of these psychological conditions may also contribute to menstrual problems and infertility.

“Psychological stress from an eating disorder can definitely play a part in infertility issues,” said Dr. Heather Maio, a psychologist and assistant vice president of clinical and admission services for The Renfrew Centers. “We tend to look at other factors going on for an individual who either currently struggles with an eating disorder or has in the past, like work stress or emotional difficulties that have spawned either because of the eating disorder or prior to it.”

2. Anorexia, however, is more likely to affect fertility than other eating disorders

Menstruators who are diagnosed with anorexia and about 50 percent of menstruators with bulimia stop having their periods, which is referred to as amenorrhea. Extreme weight loss from a decrease in calories results in suppression of hormones from the pituitary gland that are needed to maintain normal estrogen levels.

“Without normal levels of estrogen, ovulation does not occur and infertility develops,” said Dr. Carolyn Givens, a reproductive endocrinologist at Prelude Fertility clinic.

Those who participate in compulsive exercise (otherwise known as exercise bulimia) can very well end up suppressing their periods as well. Often in this situation, they may notice their menses are lighter or further apart or may stop menstruating altogether. This causes changes to the hormone levels that occur and suppress both ovulation and menstruation.

According to an article on Eating Disorder Hope by Jenifer Harcourt, a licensed professional counselor, it is possible that if someone struggles with anorexia before menses has ever begun, they could have a harder time recovering from the damage done to their body in formative adolescent years. This can translate to someone who has missed at least three menstrual periods in a row or who has not yet begun menstruation by age 15.

3. Miscarriage & stillbirth are a reality

Someone struggling with anorexia during pregnancy (referred to as “pregorexia”) can increase the risk of their baby not making it to full term. Miscarriage occurs when a fetus is lost prior to the 20th week of pregnancy, and stillbirth occurs when the fetus is lost after the 20th week of pregnancy. Due to stress placed on the fetus as a result of anorexia-related poor diet and, as a result, a lack of nutrition for the baby, pregnant people who suffer from anorexia have an increased risk for both.

More: This Mother Battled an Eating Disorder While Pregnant

Anorexic people are also more likely to have multiple miscarriages, even while in recovery from anorexia. “It’s interesting, because we are seeing research that shows that a woman in recovery from an eating disorder who is trying to become pregnant has an equal shot at succeeding if it occurs during the first six months of trying, which is the national average,” said Maio. “However, there is some new research that shows if it takes longer than six months to get pregnant, it is harder for a woman who struggled with anorexia than a woman who didn’t.”

4. The damage on fertility can usually be reversed

The good news is that people with eating disorders who seek treatment and maintain recovery can typically reverse the damage done by their eating disorder.

“Once regular periods resume, that is a good indication of fertility returning as well,” said Givens. “Menstruation typically returns [within] six months of achieving ideal body weight.”

A New Spice Girls Movie Might Actually Be Happening & We're Ready for It

Ask a '90s girl how her day is going today, and she'll probably flash you a peace sign and tell you it's the best day in decades. Why, you might ask? Because there might be a new Spice Girls movie coming, and it sounds amazing.

More: Geri Halliwell Left the Spice Girls 20 Years Ago & She's Just Now Apologizing

Unfortunately, it's not a Spice World part two. The idea that's being floated around is an animated movie, and all five Spice Girls have already "signed off on their likenesses being used for a superhero-themed movie working off of the 'girl power' message," according to Variety. A feminist message with cartoon superheroes created to be modeled after the Spice Girls! Plus, each character will be voiced by her respective Spice Girl and "feature a 'girl power' unique to that group member that reflects each girl’s personality." Are you screaming yet? I'm screaming.

More: 17 Things About the Spice Girls You Probably Never Knew

This comes on the heels of some pretty persistent rumors about a Spice Girls reunion that keep turning out to be false. And it makes sense that the rumors could have been sparked by this project, since it's kind of a reunion without being a reunion. Think about it: The Spice Girls could totally record their parts for this movie without being in the same places at the same times, which is better for their busy schedules. So, they're working together, but it's the typical reunion we're used to.

But the most exciting thing about this new project is how seriously on point it is. The "girl power" theme is one that inspired so many women and girls when the Spice Girls took over the scene in the '90s. We're all grown up now, but we're still carrying those messages with us today. We know how powerful women are. We're watching it play out in things like the Time's Up movement and #MeToo. That's also why this is the perfect time for this movie to happen. Girl Power is having a serious moment right now, and this is the Spice Girls' chance to inspire a whole new generation of girls who weren't around yet during their initial world takeover.

While this news isn't confirmed just yet, we're hopeful that this project will come together. And if it does, we'll be first in line for that girl power.

The Big Bang Theory Cast Is as Heartbroken Over the Show's Inevitable End as We Are

It got pretty emotional at Paleyfest earlier this week when the cast of The Big Bang Theory was asked about the series' 12th season, which is likely its last, although that's unconfirmed by CBS. Whether you're a fan of the show or not, saying goodbye sucks. I mean, how would you feel if you had to say goodbye to the TV family you've spent more than a decade working with? Count me out, because that's a goodbye I can't fathom being OK with.

More: The Big Bang Theory Paid Stephen Hawking the Greatest Tribute

And yet, that's exactly what some of the TBBT cast had to do while speaking with Us Weekly at Paleyfest. Johnny Galecki, one of the show's stars, could only relate it to the ending of another monumental show he was a part of: Roseanne. "When we finished on Roseanne, I was very rudderless afterwards. Granted, I was much younger then too," he told Us Weekly. "I don’t know, dread is a strong word, but there’s definitely a lot of reluctance. We spent thousands of days, literally, in the same room together as a unit, as a family. So, to not wake up and not have that to go to is going to be very jarring, I’m sure."

But Galecki did manage to tell Us Weekly what he hoped the series finale would include if and when the time comes: "I hope they write something emotional, because I know we’re all gonna be crying anyway. So you might as well make it appropriate! Capture that on camera, write that to be conducive to the fact that we’re all gonna be blubbering messes that night."

More: The Big Bang Theory Cast Took Pay Cuts for the Greater Good

Galecki's castmate Kunal Nayyar had a vision for the series finale, when it finally does come, that's a little more concrete but still pretty emotional. "I think it would be great for all the guys and the girls just to be in the living room eating Chinese food. Wouldn’t that be a loving last scene? Just talking nonsense in the end," Nayyar told Us Weekly. Nayyar's idea of the best way to end TBBT is actually kinda perfect if you think about it. Having the characters go out on an image that fans have grown to love over the years makes so much sense.

Of course, the show's creator, Chuck Lorre, has the best idea for how to end it — and it's one I think most fans will agree on. "My goal and dream for many years now is just to be diligent and make every episode the best episode we can make it," Lorre said. Just making good TV and creating memorable moments for the cast and fans of TBBT to cherish forever? That sounds like the best kind of goodbye imaginable.

65 Super-Long Baby Names for Girls: The Ultimate List

A long, classic baby name might just be the perfect choice for your baby girl. Some have a romantic ring to them, while others are sophisticated and elegant. What’s great about longer names — which we define as having three syllables or more — is you can shorten them into bite-size nicknames — basically a two-for-one.

Take Julietta, for example. You can call your girl Julie, Jules or Etta. What about Penelope? Penny is a super-sweet nickname. And Anastasia also has a few possibilities, like Ana, Stacy or Stacia. While a nickname can last a lifetime, your daughter will always have the longer, more formal version to fall back on.

With so many names to choose from, we did the work for you and compiled the ultimate list of 65 long baby girl names — from A to Z.

One tip we’ll leave you with before you scroll through: Long first names pair well with a shorter middle name. And if you need a little help with that, you can always browse through our picks.

The Unexpected Side Effect of Cervical Cancer Treatment

$

Uterus User's Guide

For eight years, I struggled with vaginismus — painful intercourse, involuntary muscle spasms and the inability to wear tampons. After long bouts of desperation, I visited a specialist who specifically worked with patients on this issue. I called in to make an appointment, and the staff reminded me that the doctor made patients who had cancer a priority — they would call me once a spot opened up.

Of course, my issue seemed minuscule in comparison, and I was more than willing to wait in the line. However, at the time, I had no idea that radiation and cancer treatment would affect patients by inflicting vaginismus. I found myself feeling pretty ignorant about the various consequences that cancers, specifically cervical, could impose on those in recovery.

James Maxwell, after losing his wife, Jo, to cervical cancer, began Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, which gives information to people affected by cervical cancer. Louise Dean, communications and public affairs assistant of the organization, says, “A cervical cancer diagnosis can affect sex and intimacy; in our survey, 90 percent of women said that they had experienced changes in their sex life as a result of cancer. There are some negative impacts, including a loss of desire, arousal difficulty, sexual pain and loss of sexual satisfaction or altered orgasm.”

More: Women Working to Cure Cancer Share Tips for Breaking Into Male-Dominated Fields

Some of these physical effects may occur months or years after treatment for cervical cancer and can include:

  • Feeling fatigued
  • Changes to sex life
  • Changes to fertility
  • Bone problems
  • Pelvic radiation disease

Moreover, depression, anxiety, lack of confidence and worry are emotional factors that can accompany recovery from cervical cancer.

“There are different types of treatment of cervical cancer depending on how developed the cancer is," Dean explains. "Different treatment options will be discussed at diagnosis.” This means the treatment may affect patients differently, especially since both radiotherapy and chemotherapy can each have side effects.

Sex and intimacy can be greatly affected, as many women lose satisfaction and have sexual pain during intercourse after their treatment. Radiation treatment causes changes to the vagina that make the walls of the vagina more fragile, according to Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust website. Scar tissue may begin forming, which reduces vaginal lubrication.

Similar to my vaginismus, our bodies react in a fight or flight way — the clenching of muscles and vaginal dryness create a complicated scenario when attempting penetration. For myself and for many people with sexual concerns after treatment, dilators are a great practice to incorporate into your sexual health recovery.

More: Why Being Thin Doesn't Always Mean You're Healthy

Pelvic radiation disease, according to Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, "affects the tissues and organs within the area of the pelvis [...] The organs and tissues in the pelvis include the bowel, rectum, bladder and vagina. It can also affect the bones and lymph nodes. The physical symptoms caused by PRD may impact on a woman’s quality of life." These consequences typically affect 46 percent of cervical cancer patients because the body understands it needs to fight back in order to heal its own immune system. Because of this, inflammation may occur, and diarrhea, blood in the stool or urine and difficulty controlling the bladder or bowels can be among the many issues.

Moreover, radiotherapy can induce menopause three months after treatment. Hot flashes, dry skin and loss of concentration are all possible side effects. In the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, researchers found that the burden of PRD-related symptoms have been underappreciated and therefore not managed properly.

As the main treatment for cervical cancer, radiation is typically done alone or followed by surgery. In other cases, radiation and chemo are used together. For cervical cancer that has returned or has spread, radiation therapy is utilized.

Many patients feel distressed or embarrassed over their side effects and do not tell their doctor — it’s imperative for medical professionals to be informed of all consequences in order to note concerns.

It’s already a feat to overcome cancer of any kind and the potentially debilitating and life-altering side effects should come with treatment that can ensure all survivors are getting the most out of their lives.

My Kid Is Growing Up on Reality TV

When the creator of The Hills and Laguna Beach, Adam DiVello, asked my husband Kerry and me if we would like to be part of his new docuseries, Music City, the first question I had was about our 2-year-old son, Wolfgang. Would he need to be on the show too? The answer was yes.

In the months following, Kerry and I took some time to talk with a lawyer and discuss with trusted friends and mentors whether this was an opportunity we should seize. And today, we're very glad we did.

More:  How Bad Is TV Before Age 2?

Yes, Wolfgang is spending his toddler life on reality TV, but his short 2-1/2 years of life have actually prepared him well for the show. Before we even started filming, Wolfgang had been on over 20 flights, lots of road trips, had lived in four houses and had hiked to 12,000-foot peaks on Kerry’s back. He spent most of his time with adults — traveling, playing music, camping and joining me at my work as a nanny. So, when a few more adults with cameras joined our adventures, it wasn’t much of a shock for Wolf.

My kid is very outgoing and adaptable. And while some might feel that I’ve exposed him to too much at such a young age, I support all types of parenting — and for me, the way I parent has been a conscious choice from day one.

I’ve been a nanny for 13 years. When we found out I was pregnant, Kerry and I agreed that this baby was going to join our life as it was; we were not going to make him the center of the world.

In my experience as a nanny, and now as a mom, kids are their healthiest — mentally and physically — when they feel secure. And that security comes from two things: knowing they are unconditionally loved by their parent or guardian and knowing that their parent or guardian is in charge. Wolfgang is so secure in our love for him and in our direction that I am at peace with his participation on the show — and ultimately with his choices as he grows to be a young man. Plus, the Music City production team and camera crew absolutely love Wolf and treat him like their own kid (and BTW, each person working on the show was required to pass an extensive background check).

More: Should Your Child Play a Musical Instrument?

Rachyl and Wolfgang

Everyday life on the show with my son is really fun; he and I both love attention, so having people watching us is exciting. And it's actually given us a real sense of community too.

Living in Nashville can feel pretty solitary for me because my husband travels a lot to play music (be prepared to see some lonely ugly-crying from me if you decide to watch the show). But having Wolf helps with that isolation, and now, having the crew around makes me feel even more connected. We have become really close with all the camerapeople, producers, production assistants and everyone else who works the long hours it takes to make something like this happen. Honestly, when we wrapped Season 1, Wolf and I were so sad — because all our new friends were suddenly gone.

All in all, it has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Just think of the "home videos" Wolfgang will have to look back on! And I assure you, if at any point I am not 100 percent confident that Wolf is safe and in good hands, I will pull him from the show. He is my No. 1 priority, and your entertainment is No. 2.

Wolfgang with Kerry

More:  Pink Juggles Kids, Music & Badassery in Her New Documentary

A lot of people wonder what Wolf will think of all this — his toddler years being documented on TV — when he's grown up, and I wonder too. I know I'm definitely looking forward to watching episodes of Music City with him as he gets older, and I'm excited for him to see how his dad and I have had to work hard to help our family succeed.

I'm also looking forward to explaining to Wolfgang that all families have problems and that there is always hope for redemption. Yes, he will see through the show that I was unfaithful to his father while we were separated, and he'll see how his dad was gone a lot and how that hurt me. But he will also see that we love each other and him unconditionally.

In a world where everything seems to have a filter, an auto-tune and a hashtag, I hope Wolf sees that real life and real love are raw and difficult and messy. I hope he sees that each day is a new day, and there is nothing that can ever separate him from our love.

Grey's Anatomy Stars Might Make Cross-Over Cameos on This New Show

Between tragic character deaths and untimely departures, Grey's Anatomy has conditioned its fans to roll with the punches over the years. So when we get actual good news, it feels gratifying — as though our patience and loyalty (read: countless nights ugly crying on the couch) is finally paying off. Well, this is one of those days, friends. Because according to Station 19 showrunner Stacy McKee, the firefighter spin-off could very well include many more cross-over cameos from our favorite faces at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

More: 10 Struggles Every Grey's Anatomy Fan Knows to Be Real

Shondaland introduced the fiery new series on Thursday, March 22, further exploring Ben Warren's decision to pursue his passion by giving up surgery to run into burning buildings. In addition to Ben's backstory in recent episodes, Grey's cued up Station 19 by introducing the female lead, Andy Herrera (played by Rosewood's Jaina Lee Ortiz).

Then, during Station 19's two-hour premiere, both Meredith and Bailey made cross-over cameos. Naturally, this fosters a sense of excitement and expectancy among fans. Can we expect regular cross-overs? Which Grey's characters could make appearances?

McKee gave a promising answer during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter when asked whether April's ex, a paramedic named Matthew, would play a larger role in the spin-off.

"I'm open to any and all cross-pollination of that nature," McKee said. "Matthew was incredible, paramedic Nicole [played by Nicole Cummins] has always been exciting. There are so many of those characters that have popped into the Grey's universe. I've been there for all of them; I was on Grey's for every season. I have all of those on my radar. You never know when you might see them."

While McKee played a little coy there, she makes the connection between the two shows even more clear further into the interview, saying, "I wanted this to work as a companion piece — to be a happy sibling to Grey's — because it's supposed to be a spinoff and they're supposed to work hand-in-hand."

So not only do we get to see more of our beloved Grey's cast, but we also get to see them interacting with new and intriguing characters. Luck may be on our side this year (you know, aside from losing both April and Arizona).

If we had our druthers, here are five Grey's favorites we'd like to get an extra dose of during Station 19.

Jo

Grey's Anatomy Jo

Now that Jo can finally breathe without worrying about her abusive ex, we want to see more of her! She and Alex are on steady footing now, her career is going great. It would be nice to see her take point on some of the potential patients being brought in by Station 19.

Alex

Grey's Anatomy Alex

Who wouldn't jump at the chance to squeeze in more Alex time each week? Since he is always so invested in his pediatric patients, we can easily see an arc involving a young burn patient.

April

Grey's Anatomy April

OK, so fine, whatever... they say Sarah Drew is leaving Grey's (we're not pouting, YOU ARE). But what if the big surprise here is that April is leaving the show — to join Station 19? She left the hospital the first time she suffered a crisis of faith, so this isn't that big of a stretch.

Owen

Grey's Anatomy Owen

Owen's military training already puts him at an advantage when it comes to thinking on the fly and being creative in the field. Maybe Ben will rope him into helping out as soon as an ambulance pulls into the bay.

Stephanie

Grey's Anatomy Stephanie

You're probably thinking, "But wait, didn't Stephanie leave the show?" And you'd be right. She's currently starring in the HBO series Here and Now. Still, she'll undoubtedly have down time between seasons, and it's not like she can't return to Grey's. She wasn't killed off, but rather chose to leave after staying in a burning building to save a young patient. See? Plenty of doctor-firefighter-crossover potential there.

Rod Stewart Is Having Way Too Much Fun Trolling Elton John

If there was ever a shadow of a doubt in your mind that Sir Elton John and Rod Stewart must have the most interesting friendship on the face of the planet, lay it to rest now — Rod Stewart's appearance this week on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen is all the proof you need.

More: Elton John Will Quit Touring, Says, 'The Time Is Right to... Say Goodbye'

John recently announced his farewell tour (a three-year, 300-show spectacle), and Stewart wasn't going to, ahem, let the sun go down on a chance to razz his longtime pal. The hilarious mini-roast kicked off when a caller asked Stewart to weigh in on John's end-of-career news.

"I did email her and said, 'What, again dear? And I didn't hear anything back," Stewart said of his friend. And the playful prodding didn't stop there.

Seated next to Cyndi Lauper, Stewart countered that he would never retire. Rather, he'd simply "fade away." The massive farewell tour? "It stinks of selling tickets," Stewart trolled. When Lauper joked it wasn't a bad idea, Stewart cut in, "It's dishonest. It's not rock and roll."

Ha! Can't you just imagine John already plotting his revenge?

After all, we know the rock god doesn't tolerate disrespect — he stormed off the stage recently when a fan approached (and kept touching) his piano. Hilariously enough, this incident actually provided Stewart with even more comedic fodder.

"I sort of understand, because the person kept [tapping him]. I don't mind it. I love people coming up on stage," said Stewart. "It's a laugh, but I can see why he was pissed off with it. I've had people come on stage while I was singing and I've nearly had me teeth knocked out."

This isn't the first time and likely won't be the last that Stewart took aim at John... or vice versa. The pair has cultivated quite the fiesty rapport since they first became friends in the early '70s. The sparring, according to the rock stars, is rooted in friendly rivalry. But, don't worry — this epic bromance isn't breaking up anytime soon.

"We try and publicize the fact that we always have a go at each other in the papers, but in fact we do that for reasons only known to us, really," John said during an interview all the way back in 1983. "We're actually very good friends."

The Final Word on Whether There’s a Difference Between Day & Night Moisturizers

$

Although I love my ridiculously extra skin care collection, the truth is my daytime routine doesn’t really differ from the nighttime one except when I need to spot-treat a blemish or treat myself to a mask. And whenever a transitional season arrives, I obsessively list everything in my possession and wonder, “Do I really need that?”

More: 20 Small-Batch Beauty Brands You Need to Try ASAP

The short answer is no, but I can’t deny the benefits of all the serums, eye creams and weird-looking tools that have kept my skin pretty damn glorious, give or take a teeny pimple. Now, moisturizer is something that I believe everyone should have in their arsenal because our skin needs nourishment to look healthy from the inside out. Also, ashiness is a no-no in my skin care book.

But I can’t help but wonder (like Carrie Bradshaw), have we all been tricked by the beauty industry? Do I truly need two different moisturizers for day and night, or can I do some spring-cleaning this month? According to Dr. Harold Lancer, founder of Lancer Skincare, and Christinah Nicolaisen, cofounder of Eleni & Chris, my obsession with collecting creams, gels and everything in between is totally warranted. Read ahead to find out why.

The daytime stuff

The biggest indicators of a daytime moisturizer are sun protection and lighter-weight ingredients. The reason for the latter, according to Lancer, is it will typically be made for more frequent application and applied over/under cosmetics.

“The vehicle is lighter, the concentrations of active ingredients are lighter, and usually there are no agents that are photosensitizing,” he says. “The product composition and consistency will also be different from your nighttime product.”

Nicolaisen adds that both day and night creams can also have similar ingredients, but again, lightweight ones, like her Hydrating Day Cream, “allow compatibility with other products such as sunscreens, primer and colored cosmetics.”

Also keep in mind that a moisturizer made with SPF is obviously beneficial, but shouldn’t be relied on as your only source of sun protection. Lancer says, “when you have multipurpose products plus sunscreen, there’s a chance the sunscreen benefit components have been reduced, which can give a false sense of security.”

The nighttime stuff

On the other hand, your nighttime moisturizer should have denser active ingredients to restore skin affected by the environment throughout the day. For instance, Nicolaisen’s Eleni & Chris night creams “include ingredients such as emollients and shea butter to reconstruct the skin’s lipid bilayer.” This, in turn, locks in moisture, making it easier for the active ingredients to penetrate into the skin overnight.

Lancer also adds that you can think of your nighttime moisturizer as a sort of stay-on mask since they tend to have more potent concentrations of anti-inflammatory agents. “They’re going to be thicker and more intensely infused with active ingredients at a higher concentration.”

More: 3 Black Women Share the Routines That Transformed Their Skin

Moisture vs. nourishment

All in all, both day and night treatments protect the skin, just in different ways. At the same time, it’s also important to distinguish between something that’s moisturizing vs. nourishing. We tend to define them almost identically, but Lancer says they aren’t exactly the same.

“A moisturizer may add moisture, but it can also block water evaporation. So instead of a moisturizer, we might opt to talk about nourishing products, which not only prevent dehydration by loss of water through evaporation, but they’re also trying to add ingredients that have an anti-inflammatory component,” he says.

So, perhaps the key to finding both a day and nighttime moisturizer, like the Lancer Nourish product, is ensuring they’re adding to instead of simply maintaining your skin’s hydration levels.

The moral of the story is: Two products may just be better than one, and if your vanity is as crowded as mine, rest easy knowing that your moisturizer collection isn’t as crazy as it looks.

What’s It Like to Wait More Than 72 Hours for an Abortion?

$

You’re pregnant and you don’t want to be. You know you want an abortion, and the clock is ticking — the longer you stay pregnant, the more expensive the procedure becomes and the less likely it will be that you can obtain an abortion in the state where you live, if at all. You go to the doctor, confirm your pregnancy, and then you’re told that no, you can’t get an abortion today. You have to wait, and it’s going to be a while.

R, a teacher in New York City, was around nine weeks pregnant when she learned that the fetus she was carrying wasn’t viable. She wanted to discontinue the pregnancy as soon as possible, but was told that she needed to wait a week.

“The reason was ‘just to make sure’ and ‘most women like to have a week to come to terms with it,'” she said. When she consulted other OB-GYNs, they confirmed there was in fact no medical reason for the wait, but it was “common practice” to both advise and enforce it.

More: Why Inducing Labor Might Be the Wave of the Future

“It was pretty horrible,” R said. “Once I knew the pregnancy wasn’t viable, I wanted to end it immediately, and to be told that wasn’t an option — that I had to wait a week because it ‘usually’ takes women that long to come to terms with the news — was unbelievably frustrating. I was already in a position where I was feeling a loss of control regarding my body, and then to be told that I couldn’t even make my own decision about what to do next was actually the worst part of the whole experience.”

Stephanie waited three weeks between finding out that she was pregnant and getting the abortion. In Florida, if you’re under 18 and you want an abortion, your parents have to give you permission. Stephanie, who was 17 at the time of her abortion, could not involve her parents and sought to obtain judicial bypass, meaning a judge would decide if she would be allowed to make the decision to get an abortion herself.

She spent two days searching for options before she was given a pro bono lawyer, and together, they collected evidence to prove that she couldn’t tell her parents about her need for an abortion and that she could make her own choices about her health care. In that time, she also got an ultrasound, kept working so she could afford the cost of the abortion, petitioned for a court date and was able to have the procedure done.

“I knew that I wanted to get an abortion from the moment I found out I was pregnant,” she said. ” The waiting period I endured while withstanding these barriers placed due to my age was a state-sanctioned constitutional barrier.”

Several U.S. states require abortion seekers to wait between 24 and 72 hours before they can obtain an abortion. (If you live in one of these states, and you’re under 18, you’re not only facing the waiting period, but the obstacle of judicial bypass.) You might also be in need of the funds, not just for the procedure, but to get to the clinic, pay for child care and stay somewhere while you endure the waiting period.

More: Why Trans & Nonbinary People Must Be Included in the Abortion Conversation

Kelsea works for an abortion provider in North Carolina. In 2016, when she found out she was pregnant, she immediately knew she wanted an abortion. She also knew she would have to wait to get it because North Carolina mandates a 72-hour waiting period.

“It was insulting and confusing,” said Kelsea of her waiting period experience. “It was cruel. I spent three days being pregnant when I didn’t want to be. I was being punished by the state for my birth control failing.”

If you live in a state with a waiting period, you will also have to listen to a provider deliver a state-mandated script, which includes information about every possible risk (even if they’re not actually risks) you might incur when you get an abortion. Because of her proximity to providers, Kelsea said she’s heard this script “hundreds of times,” and it’s unbelievably stressful for the patient.

“They’re not hearing that these things are so unlikely, they’re just hearing “death” and “hysterectomy,” she said. (A reminder here that abortion is safe, normal and common, and the false medical claims that providers are forced to read in these scripts are based in abortion stigma.)

In North Carolina, the script can be read over the phone, but you still have to wait the 72 hours before you can actually obtain the abortion. Seventy-two hours can mean the difference between first and second trimester, and abortion in North Carolina is illegal after 20 weeks, so after waiting, people sometimes end up needing to travel out of state to obtain abortion care, increasing expenses and for many, making the procedure completely impossible to get.

More: This Product Is Going to Revolutionize the Way We Take Pregnancy Tests

Kelsea is optimistic, though, that the future for waiting periods is bleak. A 2011 survey of people seeking abortion in Texas concluded that the waiting period resulted in emotional and financial burdens, and in 2015, a Florida judge ruled that the state’s 24-hour mandatory waiting period was unconstitutional.

“The tide is changing. People are realizing that it’s inhumane to ask people to wait for legal health care," she said. "We are moving towards restoring justice.”

5 Things Naked and Afraid Taught Me About Men

$

Hungry jaguars roaming at night. Tiny flies drinking from your eyeballs. Ticks on your junk. Extreme temperatures. Days without eating. And no satellite phone if there’s an overnight emergency. WTF?

If you think I'm describing a horror movie about a tropical holiday gone wrong, I'm not. I'm describing real things people experience on a brutal reality show called Naked and Afraid that's currently in its ninth season. I’m a superfan, but not for the reasons you might think.

Naked and Afraid

Perhaps as an ode to Adam and Eve, the game features one man and one woman who are total strangers and must work together if they are going to survive 21 days in the wilderness without clothes, food or water. Most men and women who volunteer for the show have studied primitive survival skills, have been in the military or are experienced hunters. Despite their preparation, however, many are not able to last the entire three weeks and must "tap out," often to the anger and frustration of their partner.

Not surprisingly, survival in the wilderness requires a lot of hard work. The couple must build a reliable shelter, keep a fire going (they are given a fire starter, but the climate is often so wet, the starter doesn't help), avoid hungry predators, boil water and, if they’re very lucky, find food.

If the personalities of the man and woman clash — and they often do — the discord can seriously threaten their safety. Put into primitive conditions, men and women seem to revert to their primal nature. That's when the fun begins.

Naked and Afraid feet

While the focus of the show is survival, it’s really about the male-female dynamic under extreme stress, and that's why I love it so much. It's sort of the ultimate version of what men and women go through at home and in the workplace, only every part of the dynamic is exposed because people are not only physically naked but also emotionally naked because of their fear. And that's truly scary.

Here are five things I've learned about getting along with men from watching the show. To get the male perspective, I was lucky enough to chat with Gary Golding, a Naked and Afraid contestant whose episode will air April 1.

1. Men always think they should be in charge

Naked and Afraid fire building

It seems like men's testosterone makes them want to take the lead in a survival situation (whether they should or not). I've learned not to take offense to this as long as their ego is kept in check. In a way, it's kind of sweet that they want to guide the woman and keep her safe. Unfortunately, there are many times when the woman should take the lead. To keep productivity high, it seems best to have a dialogue about the pros and cons of who should be in charge of what.

Golding agrees — mostly. "My partner was being really pushy about finding water. She said, 'Come on, let's go!' So, I looked into the camera and said, 'The secret here is to let her think she's in charge.' And then I turned around and said, 'Coming, dear.' I had to let her think she’s the boss, and my ego was willing to allow that. I knew that I was stronger."

Maybe the moral of the story is not to insist on being the leader? Yeah, let's go with that.

2. Men want women to be happy

Naked and Afraid couple sharing water

I believe men sincerely want the women around them to be happy. In fact, men can't stand it when they aren't, so to make a working relationship stronger, it's good to celebrate successes, no matter how small. So many times on the show, a man will bring home food he's hunted (usually a snake), and the woman will say, "It’s not a very big snake," and the man feels wounded, maybe thinking she's also referring to something else of his that could be bigger. Either way, better to say, "Thank you." If the woman thinks she can kill a bigger snake, then she should go out and do it.

On Golding’s episode, he says his partner wanted to build a shelter in a spot he didn’t think was good. “But I stayed nice and said, ‘You can build yours there and I’ll build mine here,’" he said. "She wanted to sleep up off the ground, but we weren’t in the jungle, we were on the savanna, and it wasn’t necessary.”

According to Gary, his partner gave up on her shelter pretty quickly and they both slept in his. And she never criticized the size of his snake.

3.  “Hangry” is a very, very real thing

Naked and Afraid

Hunger can lead to irritability, especially for big muscle-bound guys who are used to eating tons of protein. But more often than being hangry, the men often get emotional and just start crying. I’ll call it getting “emo-gry.”

Golding claims that didn’t happen to him because he trained himself mentally before the challenge by studying the wisdom of Spartans, the fierce warriors of ancient Greece. “I programmed my brain to enjoy it. I’d think to myself, ‘I get to starve, I don’t have to starve.’ Before I got out there, I programmed my brain to enjoy the pain. If you don’t, it will defeat you.”

Spartan philosophy... interesting. I'm sure I can use some of that. A popular Spartan battle quote is, “We bow down before no man.” Next time I diet, maybe I’ll tweak it to “We bow down before no cheese.”

4. If men are hard on you, it's because they're hard on themselves

Naked and Afraid inspecting deer

As women, it’s easy for us to forget all the expectations society puts on men or that men can be scared, too. They’re taught not to acknowledge that fear, but many men can be their own harshest critic. On the show, some men will criticize their partner’s attempt to find food or boil water. It seems more productive for everyone not to take that kind of criticism to heart because it’s not personal. But I’ve also learned to speak up if I feel a man is being too hard on me. Once I’ve said my piece, the criticism becomes his issue.

Golding says he is also very tough on himself because his father trained him to be that way. However, he tried to help his partner by modeling an extreme form of toughness for her when they were plagued by biting flies.

“Any wound you had was the shape of flies — you couldn’t see your wound. The big flies would bite you and make you bleed, and the little flies would lap it up," he said.

“I tried to give her a strong mindset. I walked around, sucked in the flies and ate them, saying, ‘Oh, they’re delicious! I love the flies.’”

According to Golding, his partner never adopted this mindset. Hmm, I wonder why?

5. Men and women balance each other out

Naked and Afraid couple greet each other

Whether it’s the African savanna or a real estate firm, men and women balance each other. Survival, or any type of success, takes a balance of masculine and feminine energy. I’ve seen numerous times on the show when, if the woman taps out or is removed from the game for medical reasons, the man usually taps out shortly thereafter. This tells me that women play a vital role in survival — both literally and figuratively.

Golding agrees. “It seems like the women on prior shows did better than the men. We balance each other out. Sometimes women can be tougher than the men.”

Well, we give birth, so, yeah.

The bottom line is that I won’t be testing my own primitive survival skills anytime soon. I will, however, continue to ponder the perplexing male-female dynamic by letting other men and women starve, battle the elements and fight for dominance on my favorite show, Naked and Afraid. It's a fascinating world that reveals a lot about humanity.

Naked and Afraid airs Sundays at 10/9c on Discovery Channel.

Wilmer Valderrama Calls Ex Demi Lovato a Hero at March for Our Lives

Wilmer Valderrama and Demi Lovato called it quits on their relationship, but that doesn't mean the now-platonic pair stopped respecting and admiring each other. Valderrama illustrated as much during the March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C., on Saturday when he praised his ex to ET.

More: Everything You Need to Know About March For Our Lives

"She's a hero. She's a hero to young men and women out there. I think that she's literally the image of recovery and getting their life together, so I'm excited that she's there and for this historic moment for young people too," Valderrama said.

The moment came after Lovato's poignant performance of her hit song "Skyscraper" in front of the nearly 1 million people who came out to support students in protest of gun violence.

Of course, Valderrama and Lovato weren't the only celebrities who showed up to lend their voice to the movement. Among the famous faces in the massive crowd were Kim Kardashian, Kanye (and North!) West, George and Amal Clooney, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Steven Spielberg, Paul McCartney and Ariana Grande.

Other celebrities who couldn't attend the march in person sent their support via social media, like Taylor Swift.

Created by student survivors of the recent mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the March for Our Lives honored the students who were lost in the shooting by demanding stricter gun control laws. The fact that so many celebrities joined the cause openly and vocally signals a major shift in the times, says Valderrama.

"They used to tell us when we were young and entering the industry, 'Oh, you're an actor, don't get involved in politics,'" he told ET. "But then you realize that politics affect policy and policy affects humankind. It's really interesting as citizens, as people in general, that you actually get involved. So I think that's why it's exciting to see that so many people are lending their voices, but most importantly, their platform for other people's voices, because we gotta just be amplifying the people's word and the people's spirit."

And if Saturday's turnout in D.C. (and across the country at coordinating rallies) is any indication, the people are pretty fierce — in word and in spirit.

Hallmark Channel Is Going Where No Channel Has Ever Gone Before

Hold the phone, Hallmark fans: your favorite network for heartwarming (and delightfully cheesy) movies will be rolling out 34 new original Christmas flicks this holiday season. Go ahead and start stockpiling all of your favorite Yuletide treats, because your future is filled with holly, jolly binge-watching.

More: 20 Nostalgic Films to Watch on Netflix

According to Entertainment Weekly, who broke the news, that impressive number represents a new record for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. Although, admittedly, the two channels came pretty darn close last year with a combined 33 holiday movies.

If the holidays feel like a dreadfully long way off, take heart. For starters, 2018 is already flying by. And you won't even have to wait until December for the movies to start. Hallmark Channel will actually start dropping the first of this new holiday programming on Oct. 27 as part of its beloved "Countdown to Christmas."

More: 50 Classic Movies Every Kid Should See by Age 10

You'll have to wait a teensy bit longer for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries to catch up, as its "Most Wonderful Movies of Christmas" block begins on Nov. 4. We're going to go ahead and predict it will be well worth the additional wait.

While little is known at the moment about the movies that will be premiering, EW reports that fans will be treated to at least two familiar faces: Danica McKellar, who starred in Coming Home for Christmas last year, and Kellie Martin, who's set to star in the tentatively titled Vet.

However, there is one small hitch in all this holiday giddyup. As usual, Hallmark will launch its summer holiday programming — from June 29 to July 8 for HMM's Gold Crown Christmas and from July 6 to July 15 for Hallmark Channel's Keepsake Christmas — but Hallmark will not be airing any new Christmas movies during the summer sessions. The channels will only be re-airing classic originals.

Still, it's a small price to pay for the very merry barrage of movies awaiting us this winter!

Paris Hilton Almost Lost Her $2 Million Engagement Ring Forever

I've never been engaged, so I can only imagine what it's like to sport a super expensive piece of jewelry — an engagement ring — on a daily basis and let me tell you something: imagining all the money sitting on my hand kinda gives me the cold sweats. That is a lot of pressure to keep something that beautiful and meaningful safe and not lose track of it at any point in time. In fact, imagining losing an engagement ring and the heart-stopping chill that would likely pass through me the minute I realized it's gone might be even worse than imagining wearing an engagement ring at all.

More: Paris Hilton's Wedding Is Turning Into a Bidding War

All this is to say that I have literally no idea how Paris Hilton kept even the faintest modicum of composure (compared the panic attack I'd likely have) when, according to Page Six, she realized she'd lost her $2 million engagement ring in a Miami club over the weekend. That's right: homegirl reportedly lost an engagement ring worth more money than I am likely to ever see in my entire life. While it sounds like an honest-to-goodness accident, this entire incident is an emotional rollercoaster to read about, from start to finish.

As Page Six reports, Hilton was in Miami for the weekend both partying and appearing at the SLS Hotel to show off her DJing skills as part of Miami Music Week. Before Hilton did any of the DJing, she was reportedly dancing along to British DJs Above & Beyond with her fiancé, Chris Zylka, at the former RC Cola factory (I can't believe I just typed that sentence, people) when her $2 million ring parted ways with her hand and disappeared for a good, long while.

As a witness told Page Six: "Paris was dancing with her hands in the air, and the next minute her giant ring had flown off. She was really panicked as the venue was packed and very dark, it was the early hours of the morning and it was crazy in there."

A thorough search was reportedly led by a very calm Zylka and the ring was finally recovered. The kicker, though, is where they actually found the ring: "Miraculously they found the ring in an ice bucket two tables down," the witness reported back to Page Six. "It was amazing that they managed to even see that huge diamond in an ice bucket. Paris cried with relief when it was safely back on her finger." Thankfully, the night didn't have to end in tears — although some were understandably shed by Hilton during the short time when she thought it was gone forever.

With the ring safely recovered, Hilton and Zylka reportedly went back to partying the night away and the following evening, on Saturday, Hilton went through with her own set at the SLS Hotel. She even posted some shots of the event (see the above Instagram photo set) and if you look carefully, you'll see her epic engagement ring safely back on her hand. Let's hope that Hilton's epic engagement ring stays put from here on out because this whole "losing a wildly expensive engagement ring in a packed, dark nightclub" business is basically panic attack material.

More: Paris Hilton & Chris Zylka Are Doing More Than Just Moving In Together

If you recall, Zylka proposed with that epic engagement ring back in January while the pair were on vacation in Aspen, Colorado. The engagement made headlines not only because of the ring, which is truly just a massive diamond perched on the slimmest, most beautiful band but also because Zylka proposed on a mountaintop. The epic proposal seemed to set the tone for what might be the most extravagant trip to the altar, too. Shortly after Hilton announced her engagement, reports came in that the couple was thinking of having multiple weddings in multiple exotic locations, which feels pretty on-brand as far as Hilton is concerned.

The couple is still in the early stages of their engagement, but it's hard to argue that this hasn't been one of the more eventful celebrity engagements in recent memory.

How Phobias Can Affect Your Health

Most of us have some sort of irrational fear that evokes anxiety. Personally, I hate needles with the fire of a thousand suns and dread getting blood drawn at the doctor way more than the average person. Although it's decidedly unpleasant at the time, I only need to deal with needles about twice a year, so my fear doesn't interfere with my daily life — and the same is true for the majority of others who are only confronted with their fears on rare occasions.

But the 12.5 percent of American adults who suffer from a specific phobia at some point during their lives experience impairment that ranges from mild to severe — and it can have a profound impact on their health.

So, what exactly are we afraid of?

Toronto-based mental health strategist Mark Henick tells SheKnows that contrary to common belief, agoraphobia isn't specifically a fear of public spaces or leaving the house.

"It's actually a fear of fear. That is, it's a fear of having a panic attack in a public place, which may then cause you to make a scene or become embarrassed," he explains. "They fear feeling trapped, confined, helpless or lost. It's this fear that's the underlying problem." As a coping mechanism, people with agoraphobia tend to avoid public places — and in the most serious cases, they won't leave their houses even to get food or handle other basic needs.

More: Talking About Depression Is Good — Investing in Mental Health Is Better

Although it's not currently classified as a phobia, orthosomnia is also an anxiety-based disorder. Those affected become so preoccupied with the goal of getting a "perfect" night of sleep their stress and anxiety around the issue make it harder to fall asleep. Kathy Brown, a licensed professional counselor, tells SheKnows that because orthosomnia hasn't received much attention until recently, it may be labeled as a phobia upon further review and research.

"It isn't classified as a phobia according to the latest version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, whose fifth edition was published in 2013. It’s come to the attention of the public rather recently and will possibly be included in a future edition," Brown says. However, she notes that concern about not getting enough sleep is common among people who have generalized anxiety disorder or other anxiety disorders.

More: 4 Alternative Ways to Help Your Mental Health

Other serious phobias that can impact your health include mysophobia (fear of germs), vehophobia (fear of driving), claustrophobia (intense fear of closed spaces), social phobias, astrophobia (fear of thunder and lightning) and aerophobia (fear of flying).

"Over time, if a phobia is untreated, it can significantly impact that individual's level of functioning in multiple areas of their lives," Dr. Danielle Forshee, a psychologist, tells SheKnows, noting that certain phobias can ultimately lead to agoraphobia as people search for ways to avoid confronting other phobias, such as germs, social embarrassment or driving.

More: This Project Aims to Change the Way We Look at Mental Health

In addition to the impact on a person's mental health, phobias can also cause physical complications. Forshee explains that people with severe phobias experience "significant anxiety in the presence of that stimulus," and this often occurs before they're exposed to the stimulus. "Symptoms of anxiety in these situations include nausea, sweating, shaking or trembling, difficulty catching your breath, dizziness and increased heart rate," she says.

Brown says people with phobias and anxiety disorders are more likely to resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms in an effort to quell their anxiety. "[They're] more likely to smoke, abuse alcohol and prescription or street drugs than people who don’t have a mental disorder," Brown explains. "They’re more subject to insomnia too, and insufficient sleep makes people more vulnerable to stroke, obesity and diabetes."

Henick, Forshee and Brown all tell SheKnows that cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy (gradually introducing the patient to the anxiety source or its context in a safe situation) are effective treatment methods. However, Brown says many people with phobias don't get the treatment they need.

"Someone who’s phobic about social situations doesn’t want to put themselves in the position to be judged by a therapist, for example," she explains. "Someone with fear of driving doesn’t want to get in the car and go to the clinic." When phobias go untreated, a person's mental health deteriorates further.

No one deserves to live a life that's controlled by fear. Although it's easier said than done, treatment can greatly improve a person's quality of life. It's natural to have anxiety about going to a therapist, but having a trusted friend or family member drive you to your appointment and wait outside to offer support afterward can make the process more manageable.

And the bottom line is that phobias don't simply go away on their own, so treatment is essential. "Without treatment, people’s lives tend to get smaller and smaller as they avoid the things that scare them instead of challenging themselves to move beyond their comfort zone," Brown says.

It's the Perfect Time for a Roseanne Reboot — Here's Why

Even if you're tired of the reboot trend in television right now, Roseanne is the one revival you need. The show first aired in 1988 and started out by focusing on a true blue-collar family. By the time the last episode aired in 1997, Roseanne had taken mental illness, abortion, birth control and LGBTQ and racial issues way more seriously than other sitcoms of its day.

More: I'm So Over the TV Reboot Madness

Unlike other shows, where the storylines and characters feel a bit dated (cough, cough, Will & Grace), Roseanne and the rest of the Conner family are exactly where you expect them to be — still working hard to achieve the American dream that’s often fraught with trials and tribulations. That’s also where the United States is right now — the working class feels underrepresented and many people are looking to President Trump to “make America great again.”

Whether you agree with that sentiment or not, it’s a valid point of view in different regions of the U.S. And that all becomes apparent when it's revealed that Roseanne voted for Trump — on the show and in real life — while Jackie, played by Laurie Metcalf, voted for Jill Stein. Their opposing views cause a rift in the family, just as it has for many American families.

Roseanne 2018 preview

Roseanne 2018 preview

But don't worry, only the first episode gets into the Trump drama. The show moves on to other important issues, including gender fluidity and a woman’s right to choose what she does with her body, no matter what stage of life she’s in.

Roseanne 1994 abortion episode

Roseanne 1994 abortion episode

Of course, one of the most important voices in the series is Roseanne herself. In the 1980s and 1990s, she was a full-blown liberal. Her character believed in every social cause and issue. Now that she’s in her mid-60s, her views have become more conservative. She still supports women, but her American dream has shifted in scope, which is interesting to watch and explains a little about why a white woman would cast a vote for Donald Trump.

More: Roseanne Barr Explains Why She Doesn't Care for Hillary Clinton

Even more, Metcalf's character (we can never get enough Metcalf!) provides the foil for all of these beliefs and consistently challenges Roseanne, asking her what caused her to alter some of her beliefs. She reminds her sister of what she used to stand for and shares her confusion as to why they are no longer aligned politically. It’s the perfect representation of so many families in America.

More: The Roseanne Cast May Have Gotten Older, but They Look Exactly the Same

And that, my friends, is why this reboot makes complete sense. Nothing feels forced, and everything is on the table and up for discussion.

So, the real question is, could Roseanne be a uniting force in a very divisive political landscape? It’s certainly worth giving discourse a sense of civility again.
