Meghan Markle Is Woman of the Year, Because of Course She Is

In an announcement that will surprise hardly anyone, Meghan Markle has been named Woman of the Year 2017 by Hello! magazine in the U.K. Sure, Americans hearing that a uniquely U.K. publication crowned their Woman of the Year might not be that exciting, but it's hard to deny that in this specific instance, Markle has had one heck of a year; she definitely deserves the accolade.

The news was quietly announced on the afternoon of Dec. 19, with Hello! posting a photo on Twitter of what is likely a pre-royal engagement photo (considering how revealing it is in comparison to her current wardrobe) of Markle looking radiant as ever. There's not likely to be a cover story or interview with Markle since Hello! magazine may not have the clearance for that sort of thing. But again, interview or not, it's hard to deny it's a good choice.

Think about it. After dating for a little over a year and a half, Markle and her beau, Prince Harry, officially announced their engagement in early December 2017. In the months preceding that, she formed a close relationship with the royal family (notably including Queen Elizabeth II), attended the 2017 Invictus Games to support her beau, finished her run on the massively successful TV show Suits and began building her life in London by moving in with Harry. All the while, as she has thoroughly changed her life in every way possible, she's broken through barriers and intense public scrutiny, where she was judged for her career and for the fact that she is a biracial woman, only to emerge on the other side with her life and future intact.

6 Reasons You'll Love the Caribbean’s Sint Eustatius

It’s ironic that the first country to recognize the United States as an independent nation is not known by many Americans. Sint Eustatius, more commonly known as Statia, has gone mostly unknown as a Caribbean tourist destination as well. Statia is a special municipality of the Netherlands located a quick 20-minute plane ride from Sint Maarten. Statia was once a huge global trading post, which is evident by the historical ruins dotting its coastline. And while the current population is small, with approximately 4,000 residents, it is by no means lacking in spirit. I got to experience it firsthand. In the fall of 2016, I went on an amazing trip to the island, and it’s definitely a place that should be known.

More: 6 Ways to Get the Most out of a Weekend Visit to Charleston, South Carolina

1. It was the first country in the world to recognize United States' independence

On Nov. 16, 1776, an American ship sailed to Statia and announced its arrival by firing a 13-gun salute, which represented the colonies that had rebelled against Britain. Statia fired back the appropriate number of shots to acknowledge the event, known historically as the First Salute. The importance of this moment was acknowledged by U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, who came to Sint Eustatius in 1939 and presented a plaque that is currently on display in Fort Oranje. Later in 1777, Morocco was the first country to formally recognize the United States, but Statia still holds this moment close and celebrates annually with Statia Day.

2. Being the largest Caribbean trading post in the 1700s means it has tons of interesting history

Thousands of ships came to the island from Europe, America and Africa. Once slavery ended, the island saw a quick economic decline, and the population quickly fell as well. This is the story of many Caribbean islands, but because Statia was never fully built up, much evidence of the past can still be experienced — in some ways, it almost feels like time stopped on the island. A variety of interesting sights exist both above and below water. The island is known for blue beads, which were given to slaves by the Dutch as payment. After emancipation, it is said the slaves threw their beads in the air to celebrate, and they are still found on the island to this day.

3. It is one of the few Caribbean islands that is untouched by tourism

Image: Victoria Waterman

History is part of what makes this island so special, but it is definitely not your typical tourist destination. I'll be honest. This isn't a place I would recommend for a high-end luxury traveler or someone who's focused on activities. Nature, simplicity, history and friendly people are what you will experience. The beach area on the island is minimal, but there are a few areas on the Caribbean Sea side that are nice for swimming. Diving is a very popular activity on the island as well. The Quill, a dormant volcano, has many paths to explore from the inner volcano to peaks where you can see neighboring islands. I did this hike and highly recommend it.

4. The island maintains a very stable economy

Oil is the main economic driver for Statia. The American company NuStar Energy operates an oil business on the island that supplies oil to neighboring areas. This business attracts a variety of nationalities across a very small population, which is interesting, and also contributes to the virtually nonexistent crime rate, as many people are involved in the business. The second-biggest employer is the government.

5. Animals roam free

It is common to see cows, goats and sheep anywhere you go, although they do mostly keep to the higher mountain area. There are efforts to gather and fence in the animals, but at the moment, they are free, which adds to the unique feel of the island.

6. Dutch culture remains

The Dutch influence on the island can be seen in street names, the style of the houses and more. Dutch is the official language of the island, but English is spoken everywhere.

How Calm Your Relationship Anxiety

$

Being in a relationship is amazing, but it can also be kind of stressful when you think about it too much. Especially in the beginning, it can be hard to trust your new partner. After all, you have no guarantee that things will work out, and it’s hard to know if your partner is as invested as you are, especially if you’re a new couple.

That uncertainty is part of what makes a relationship exciting, but it can also cause some serious anxiety — and unfortunately, it’s pretty common. “When we begin a relationship, there are plenty of unknowns, and when we focus on the future and what might happen or what could happen, we allow ourselves to feel anxious,” says relationship psychologist Dr. Karin Anderson. “It’s no fun, but it’s totally normal.”

More: 3 Women on What Triad Relationships Are Really Like

This is especially likely to happen with people who are prone to worrying or are with a partner who doesn’t communicate clearly, says licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Alicia H. Clark. “Anxiety can be just about you and be insecurities you bring to every relationship, or anxiety can reflect stresses in the relationship,” she says.

According to Clark, having anxiety about your relationship doesn’t mean you’re a terrible person — rather, it means you care. “We care deeply about securing love and keeping it safe, and we feel anxiety when love might be at risk,” she says.

But of course, anxiety kind of sucks, and you probably want to keep it to a minimum. If you’re suffering from relationship anxiety, these moves should help you keep yourself in check.

1. Don’t jump to conclusions

It’s easy to go down a bad path when your partner doesn’t answer their phone or respond to a text right away, but Clark says it’s important to press pause. “Take a moment to acknowledge and name how you’re feeling and go about the work of detangling the actual stressors from the ‘ghosts’ of your past.”

For example, maybe you were cheated on in a previous relationship and you feel nervous that something bad is happening behind your back when you can’t reach your S.O. Or maybe you’ve just read a lot of cheating stories online and are scared it could happen to you. Whatever it is, it’s important to remember that this is not the current situation.

“This can help lower your anxiety considerably again,” Clark says. “What’s left then is the stressor itself — your partner’s communication, the time you’re spending together, how you are feeling. These are the stressors that deserve focus and attention and need to be solved through discussion and different behavior.”

2. Engage in a little self-talk

Anderson suggests talking to yourself the same way you would talk to your best friend if they were going through the same situation. Try saying something like, “I know you’re freaking out, but let’s take a deep breath and calm down a bit. We have no legitimate reason to believe anything’s wrong.” It’s also important to remind yourself that just because you’re afraid of something doesn’t mean it’s true. And of course, it’s crucial to remind yourself that you’ll be OK even if things go south in your love life — even though you shouldn’t get ahead of yourself.

3. Don’t pin your anxiety on your partner if they’re not behaving suspiciously

It’s easy to assume that your anxiety is your S.O.’s fault, but it’s not fair to put your fears on them if they’re not doing anything wrong. “You’re an adult and you need to manage your own emotions and make yourself happy,” Anderson says. “It’s not your partner’s job to alleviate your anxiety — it’s yours.”

4. Remember that there’s only so much you can control

This is incredibly important to remember. You can control your thoughts and responses to situations, and that’s about it. “Ultimately, you can’t control your partner,” Anderson says. Meaning, if they’re going to cheat, they’re going to cheat. But she advises controlling what you can control. “Do everything in your power to make your relationship a great one,” she says. “If you do end up breaking up, you’ll know you did your best.”

Lady Gaga's Next Big Gig Is One That Fits Her Brand Perfectly

When it comes to Lady Gaga, you cannot — and should not — try to pigeonhole her. She's an artist who is consistently taking risks, and in doing so, she manages to surprise us all. It's a method that has managed to work in her favor many a time. Now, she's taking another big risk that will no doubt pay dividends in the future. It's also, coincidentally, very on-brand for the beloved pop star.

On Tuesday, Dec. 19, it was announced by none other than Gaga herself that she would be taking up a two-year Las Vegas residency. The move — already made by pop greats like Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and the Backstreet Boys — is definitely going to be an exciting one for Gaga, a born entertainer and larger-than-life artist who regularly thrives on the energy of the audiences she performs for. Las Vegas is an incredible fit for her brand and for her career, which is starting to comfortably plateau as her successful Joanne world tour is finally shuttered. Performing in one of America's flashiest cities feels like a perfect fit for a pop star whose brand is arguably made of larger-than-life imagery and flashy performances. However, it's also admittedly a bit oddly timed since most pop stars head to Las Vegas in the twilight years of their career and sometimes even after they've peaked. What gives, Gaga?

Gaga made the first of a series of Instagram posts on Tuesday afternoon. She posted a photo of herself signing a document and looking up into the camera with the caption, "The rumors are true!"

Rumors, dear Gaga? What rumors? Well, she took care of that curious question shortly thereafter by posting another photo of herself raising a glass to what is likely her successful future stint at the Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino's Park Theater in Las Vegas. Caption: "I'm gonna be a Las Vegas girl!"

According to the E! News report, Gaga will begin her two-year Las Vegas residency in December 2018, but more information on tickets and show dates will be released further down the line. In an official press release also posted by E! News, Gaga gave a statement about why she was undertaking a Las Vegas residency now (the move is one frequently made by performers in the later years of their career) and what it means to her as an artist.

"It's the land of Elvis, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack, Elton John, Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli. It has been a life-long dream of mine to play Las Vegas," she explained. "I am humbled to be a part of a historical line-up of performers, and to have the honor of creating a new show unlike anything Vegas has ever seen before. I'll tell you exactly what I told my MGM and Park Theater partners — you can count on this performer always for one thing… I'll leave my heart on the stage every single night. Thank you to my fans for always believing in me. Meet me in Las Vegas baby, we did it!"

It's been one heck of a year for Gaga. It included the aforementioned massively successful Joanne world tour and her publicly documented battle with chronic, debilitating pain from fibromyalgia. On a happier note, it also included her engagement to boyfriend Christian Carino. This is certainly another big win for Lady Gaga, and it will undoubtedly be fun to see just how her Las Vegas residency comes together over the next year.

Why Sunny Days Actually Make My Anxiety Worse

Anxiety and depression make existing difficult in any weather, but there is something especially devastating about spending an entire sunny, warm day under a duvet because you can’t force yourself to leave your house.

On days when it’s rainy and/or cold, staying holed up inside feels fine for the most part. Now that we’re all about coziness and hygge, wrapping up and staying in is validated if not encouraged. But for me, at least, feeling depressed or anxious on a nice day and then staying in to deal with it only leaves me feeling worse — as though I haven’t made the most of the weather and really should be outside interacting with other humans and enjoying life.

More"Hygge" Is the Best-Kept Danish Secret to Beating the "Winter Blues"

Now, you’re probably thinking something along the lines of “but why doesn’t she just get up and go out?” Been there, tried that. Sure, sunshine and social interaction may be beneficial for some people, but on days when depression is truly kicking my ass — when I feel completely hopeless and like everything in the world is pointless — no amount of fresh air or kind people can help. I’ve tried. In those cases, I’ve typically wound up leaving whatever it was I got dressed for early and then feeling worse yet for wasting my limited time, energy and financial resources on an outing I didn’t get anything out of or enjoy.

And yes, I’ve discussed this with my therapist, who has described this as a form of seasonal affective disorder. But wait. Isn’t that when you get sad during winter when it’s cold and dark outside? Yes, but for some people — including me — the opposite is true. I spoke with some mental health experts to get a better idea of why I feel this way and what I can do to help combat it.

What is seasonal affective disorder?

SAD affects about 5 percent of American adults and lasts around 40 percent of the year for them, typically occurring during the months of fall and winter, when days are shortest and the weather tends to be colder, darker and wetter. It’s more common in women than men.

But don’t we all get a little down during the winter? Sure, but the “winter blues” or “cabin fever” are not the same thing as SAD. And despite having “disorder” as part of its name, SAD technically isn’t its own separate diagnosis, but rather is identified as a type of depression.

Kinsey McManus, director of client services at National Alliance on Mental Illness — NYC Metro, explains that people with other diagnoses can see their symptoms worsen in a seasonal pattern, meaning it must have occurred for at least two years in a row and not be related to personal life changes, like seasonal unemployment or being on a school schedule.

“The seasonal pattern addition means that a person experiences the onset of depressive episodes around the same time of year,” McManus says. “In addition, the person experiences the subsequent ending of depression around the same time of year. For example, over the years, a person notices that they usually start to feel depressed in the fall and generally start to feel better in the spring.”

More: How to Get a Handle on Holiday Depression

Because SAD is something that has become so familiar and is often conflated with the winter blues, some people may be tempted to self-diagnose and not seek professional medical treatment. But according to Dr. Fran Walfish, Beverly Hills family and relationship psychotherapist, it is important to consult with a well-trained, experienced psychiatrist who can evaluate whether there is a neurobiological basis for the depressive episode.

Good to know, but what about people who buck the trend and feel worse during the spring and summer months?

According to Rob Cole, the clinical director of mental health services at Banyan Treatment Center, about 10 percent of those with SAD experience what is known as “reverse SAD,” meaning their depression gets worse as the weather improves.

“For the winter SAD, the most pronounced symptom is lethargy, whereas reverse SAD tends to be characterized by feelings of agitation,” Cole explains. “Reversed SAD may be the result of too much sunlight, which changes the production of melatonin, which can cause sleep disturbance. Additionally, people often stay up later in the summer because of the increased sunlight, which can throw off their circadian rhythm [your internal body clock].”

Along the same lines, according to Dr. Jephtha Tausig, a New York City-based clinical psychologist, people who experience it may not be comfortable with hotter temperatures and greater amounts of sunlight, leaving them feeling irritated and anxious instead of invigorated.

How to deal with reverse SAD

For those suffering from reverse SAD, it is important to continue to get enough sleep and to stay on the same sleep cycle, going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, Cole says.

And even though exercising — or any sort of moving — is the last thing you want to do, it may help. “If exercising outdoors is too draining, go to the gym or try a water sport to help fight off the feelings of agitation in the stifling and oppressive dog days of summer,” Cole adds.

It can also be helpful to think about why you’re feeling worse during a particular season and then figure out how to adjust your environment to make you more comfortable, Tausig suggests. This could include using full-spectrum light bulbs and light boxes, darker blinds or air conditioning, she adds.

And if there’s one thing we've learned about seasons, it’s that they change (depending on your climate), so if you see your mental health decline seasonally, you know it’s bound to improve eventually.

“The best personal — and professional — mantra I use to combat negative thinking is the reminder that the trigger issue is temporary,” Walfish says. “Dealing with anxiety-provoking daily issues can be challenging. Life always throws us a curveball with relationship and work letdowns and disappointments.”

Lastly, another crucial tool — which is also a life skill and helpful to everyone, regardless of mental health issues — is developing thinking neutrality, Walfish says, adding that it’s easier said than done. This means that you reestablish a more benign, accepting, self-observing conscience. In other words, the guilt and shame you feel about staying in during the sunny, social summer months may not be a result of anyone else judging you, but more likely, of how you judge yourself.

People raised by overly critical parents may have a tendency to be extremely hard on themselves, Walfish explains, which could result in extreme self-criticism in the areas of body image, intelligence, competence, attractiveness or any type of self-functioning.

To help combat this, Walfish says the first step is to become a benign self-observer, which is achieved by becoming more self-aware and noticing each time you think or feel a self-put-down.

More: Talking About Depression Is Good — Investing in Mental Health Is Better

“You should simply think a gentle shrug-of-the-shoulders comment, such as a tender, ‘There I go again... thinking critical thoughts!’ That's all,” Walfish notes. “Don't try to change anything. Just observe without judgment. This is the first giant step toward changing toward positive thinking.”

For me, simply recognizing that my depression and anxiety follow a seasonal pattern has helped. Yes, it still happens, but at least now I know it’s a perfectly legitimate part of my overall diagnosis, and being mindful of that has helped me feel slightly better buried under a blanket in 95-degree summer heat.

McDonald's Is Launching a Vegan Burger

A few years ago, I was road-tripping with a vegan friend. We got hungry and wanted to stop for lunch, but the only restaurants within 10 miles were fast-food chains. Hungry and desperate, we stopped at McDonald's, but with no vegan or even vegetarian options available, my friend hesitantly ordered a Big Mac with no burger because there were no other options for her. We laughed at how ludicrous it was, but it's an issue vegans and vegetarians are all too familiar with. Plant-based alternatives are becoming more mainstream, but fast-food restaurants have been slow to catch on to the demand for vegetarian and vegan options.

Well, McDonald's is listening to your demands now, vegans. Back in October, they tested out a vegan burger in Finland. It was so well received McDonald's has decided to make the McVegan burger a permanent menu item in Sweden and Finland.

“Vegetarian and vegan is a strong trend, and more and more people want to eat more plant-based today,” the company said in a press release. “With McVegan on the menu, it’s easy for everyone to try a good vegan burger, whether it’s for the good taste or for variety.”

We know they're vegan, but what are they made of exactly? We aren't totally sure, but McDonald's has said the burger is a soybean-based patty.

Time-Saving Tips From the Baddest Mom Bosses We Know

$

"Having it all" sometimes feels like an unattainable goal, but there are some bad-ass women out there who are pretty close to making it happen. Juggling career and family is at least twice the work, so these professionals have come up with some fool-proof hacks for dealing with whatever life throws their way. Whether it's using their commute to catch up on calls or getting outside help when things get too crazy, these life-saving hacks make the path to success seem easier to navigate than ever.

1. Befriend technology

For Lauren Garcia, head of industry at Google, technology is a total time-saver. "Instacart is probably my most crucial tool, as I can literally be anywhere and ensure we have a fridge full of groceries before the end of the day. This has saved me hours on the weekend that I can now give back to spending with my husband and son. Google Express and Amazon Prime are also essentials. From school supplies to birthday party gifts to household essentials, I can pretty much have anything at my door within 24 to 48 hours."

2. Use a food delivery service

"I loved cooking every night when I was home more often. Now, I have Blue Apron delivered every week. That way I make sure there are nutritious, home-cooked meals, no matter who’s home to prepare dinner. My husband is becoming quite the chef," shared CNBC correspondent Contessa Brewer.

3. Practice the "15 for 30" rule

"I’m convinced that doing 15 minutes of prep at night saves 30 in the morning," said Beth Kerley, global director of communications and PR for Build-a-Bear Workshop. "Prepping my work bag, gathering my infant and toddlers’ school stuff, doing a sweep of the house — getting lunch bags, breakfast bowls, etc. out the night before makes a big difference in the morning."

4. Minimize your personal routine

"Reduce that which is required to look professional," advised Felicite Moorman, CEO of STRATIS and BuLogics. "I have a wash-and-go, no-color hairstyle and I only use clear nail polish if I splurge on a manicure or pedicure. When traveling, I only ever do carry-on, no matter what. I wear dresses and repeat purchase shoes I fall in love with. I wear minimal makeup (and use my blush on my eyelids), and I do all my shopping online and use Stitch Fix for refreshers to keep my wardrobe on trend."

5. Work from home as often as possible

Priyanka Prakash, managing editor of Fit Small Business, recommends occasionally working from home. "For me, working from home saves one-and-a-half to two hours in commute time, so I try to do this occasionally. If you have a job that you can do from home, try to work out a reasonable work-from-home schedule with your manager." It's becoming more and more common these days to work remotely, so it might be worth bringing up.

6. Prioritize your health

"Being a full-time mom, doctor and type 1 diabetic can be challenging. Not only do I have to keep track of my sugar levels, but people living with diabetes are two times more likely to develop gum disease," shared Dr. Natalie Strand, anesthesiologist and pain management specialist (and first woman to win The Amazing Race). Instead of ignoring your health when you get busy, it's even more important to pay attention — a little effort now could save you a lengthy hospital or dentist trip down the road.

7. Take up meditation

Taking a few minutes in the morning to refocus can make you more efficient. Deborah Sweeney, CEO of MyCorporation.com, recommends the meditation app Omvana. "I use it for 10 minutes each morning, and that allows me to set my intentions for a productive day. It helps me to stay organized and on track and feel a little less frazzled."

8. Become a master planner

Last-minute schedule changes are stressful for Amy Rosenow, CEO and cofounder of Jugl. Instead, she recommends planning your family's schedule out in two-week increments. "Map out the plan for all the kids' activities (what events, what they need to bring, who is driving) and confirm evening plans and travel with your partner to help you plan meals and determine if you need a babysitter. By focusing on what is coming at you the following week, you can avoid the massive pain of preventable last-minute fire drills."

9. Make a tried-and-true list

Staying organized isn't always easy, but using digital services in addition to traditional lists helps Samantha Avneri, marketing director at Regpack, stay on track. "I use Google Inbox and reminders to ensure I don't forget anything — deadlines at work, snack day at school, etc. If it isn't in my calendar or a reminder in my inbox, it honestly won't happen," she said. "I also make a paper list every Monday morning for work. This helps me start my week off with a great visual of what needs to get done, and when," she told us.

10. Catch up on phone calls during your commute

"I save phone calls and book conference calls to coincide with my commute to and from work, so I do not waste time in traffic," said Caroline Moses Sprouse, social media marketing manager for Nissan North America.

11. Plan a weekly family meeting

Doing a run-through for the week ahead on Sunday helps make sure you and the rest of the family are on the same page. "We host a weekly survival meeting," Rachel Sobel Fobes, a TV producer, said. "We run through the week and figure out who is traveling, how our kids are getting to school and picked up, if we need any outside help... basically, how to keep us all alive, well and on schedule for the week. It sets the tone for us and eliminates daily logistical struggles."

12. Give yourself an at-home schedule

Sometimes, it's important to respect your schedule at home as much as you respect your schedule at work. Chloe Rosenthal, HR director at &pizza, told us, "My boss knows that I am 100% dedicated to my work, but from 7 to 9 p.m., it's all about family time, whether that is family dinner, playing a family game or helping the kids with homework. If I need to, I get back on my computer later to catch up any work I may have missed during that time."

How to Celebrate Winter Solstice With Kids

$

The winter solstice (also known as midwinter or yule) is the shortest day of the year, when we have the least amount of daylight and the longest, darkest night. It's also known as the "rebirth" of the sun; the days start to grow longer from the winter solstice until the summer solstice in June. Winter solstice celebrations represent a spark of light in the darkness, and the holiday can also serve as an opportunity for rest, contemplation and conceiving new life — metaphorically or even literally. The solstice provides a moment for meaningful rituals to honor the season. But are those rituals too esoteric to include children?

Absolutely not. I celebrate solstice/yule with all of my three kids, and there are so many beautiful ways to recognize this day as a family. To start, I would spend some time reflecting on your intentions for the winter solstice so you can explain to your children what the holiday means to you and maybe even weave in existing traditions from other holidays you celebrate during this time. For example, I also celebrate Christmas with my kids, so we put up our Christmas tree on the day of the solstice. But do whatever makes sense for you and your family. Below are some of my favorite rituals to involve kids of all ages in the midwinter celebrations this week.

Tree blessing & decorating

Decorating your tree on the day of the winter solstice lets you create a simple and fun ritual with your family — and get everyone involved. Take time to go out and search for the perfect tree with your family, whether you all end up roaming the forest or just walking around a store. When you bring it home, set a festive tone by lighting candles or burning incense; play some music (Christmas music is not required). Then get out your favorite decorations or make your own.

I start with a tree blessing — “Thank you, tree, for bringing your energy of stability and strength into our home and helping us to enjoy this winter solstice” — which you can use or create your own. There's no right or wrong in ritual; it's whatever feels good and grounding for your family.

Then we decorate. Each family member adorns the tree with their favorite ornaments as well as elements of nature such as pinecones, feathers, twigs and herb bundles. I also like to brew a special tea on the solstice using seasonal ingredients: elderberry, juniper berry, hawthorn berry, pine needles, ginger, hibiscus and cinnamon.

Build a winter altar

An altar is a place to put meaningful items and also to create beauty and warmth in your home. You can use your mantel or a simple shelf or table; you can have one altar or many throughout your space. This option is great if you don’t want a cut tree or like to keep your celebratory objects out all winter long. I like to take the kids outside on a nature walk or hike to find some fun things to include; we all pick out a few special items, such as evergreen boughs, pine cones, holly, small stones, twigs, feathers and acorns.

Add gold or yellow candles to represent the returning sun — crystals or really anything bright and shiny will do well too. On the evening of the solstice, my kids and I take a moment to light the candles on our altar and say a prayer of gratitude for the sun together. You can do this every night until the candles burn out or let the candles burn all evening.

Candle or bell ceremony

A candle ceremony is a ritual to welcome back the sun as well as honor the power of the darkness, which gives us the space for rest, quiet time and contemplation. I like to have one large pillar candle for this ritual, plus a small candle for each family member. Start with a holiday feast of your favorite seasonal foods, and after dinner, clear the table and set up the larger candle in the middle to represent the sun. Turn off all the lights in your home and take a few moments in darkness and silent reflection. Then light the large candle and say a prayer or blessing to thank the sun for its nourishing light. One at a time, each person can light their candle from the middle flame (smaller children will need help with this) and say a special thank-you or set an intention for the coming year. When you are finished, extinguish your flames and welcome back the sun. My kids and I like to sing a song here as well — "This Little Light of Mine" or something else.

If your children are all very small, you can replace the candle in this ceremony with a small bell and have each child ring it in turn instead of lighting a flame. Bells have been used by many cultures during ceremony and are commonly used during this time of year to “ring in the new" and bid the old goodbye. Going around the circle, each family member can speak a wish for the coming year (for themselves or for the planet).

I love celebrating solstice and other Earth holidays (days when we celebrate the relationship of the Earth to the sun) because they affect absolutely everyone on our planet — regardless of location, religion or ethnicity. For me, teaching these holiday traditions to my children also teaches them unity. When we take time to honor the Earth as our home, we feel more connected to nature and its rhythms — which makes us more connected to each other as humans too.

Meryl Streep Is the Target of a Mysterious Poster Campaign in Hollywood

Meryl Streep can't seem to catch a break ever since she claimed she didn't know about Harvey Weinstein's pattern of harassing and assaulting the women he worked with. First, she was called out online by Rose McGowan for her actions. Now, she's the subject of a mysterious poster campaign in Hollywood.

More: You Need to See Meryl Streep's Obama-Inspired Purse

Photos have been popping up on social media of the posters, which feature Weinstein and Streep at an event together. The words, "she knew," cover Streep's eyes.

No one has taken responsibility for the posters, but they seem to have been timed to go up shortly after Streep made her remarks about her working relationship with Weinstein, seemingly distancing herself from the notorious producer from the get-go.

"One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew. Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally," she said. "I didn’t know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts. And if everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it."

McGowen, who alleged Weinstein raped her, tweeted a response to Streep's words, writing, "Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @goldenglobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy."

McGowen has since deleted the tweet, but Streep did respond to it.

"It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others," Streep said. "I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening."

Streep is one of many women planning to wear black to the Golden Globes in solidarity with the women who have spoken out about rampant sexual harassment and assault in the entertainment industry and in silent protest against the power structures that allow it. Streep has not commented on the posters at the time of reporting, although it's tough to say whether further curiosity about the posters, their creator and Streep's feelings about them will subside anytime soon.

Mindy Kaling Welcomes First Child

This year, Christmas came a tad early for actor and comedian Mindy Kaling. The Mindy Project star gave birth to her first child, a baby girl, on Dec. 15 according to E! News.

Unlike Late Late Show host James Corden, who nearly named his baby girl Beyoncé in a fit of indecision, this actor was prepared. Mindy had no qualms about naming the newest addition to her family: Katherine Kaling. While details surrounding the reason behind the child’s name remain sparse, the name Katherine means “pure and clear" in Latin, and it's worth pointing out that mama Mindy is a self-professed Latin nerd. Could this be the connection? Then again, there's always Duchess Catherine for elegant inspiration.

News of Kaling’s pregnancy trickled in last July after her fellow A Wrinkle in Time costar, Oprah Winfrey, spilled the beans. "At first it was like, 'OK, if anyone was going to announce big news about your private life, Oprah Winfrey is the person,'" Kaling said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "You can't complain that much about it. You also can't be like, 'Hey, Oprah, zip it.' Because she's almost like a religious figure."

While Kaling surely would’ve preferred the big news to come from her, she ultimately looked on the bright side. "I actually thought, 'Well, OK, if there's one person I have to tell my daughter about that revealed her existence to the world, Oprah's pretty good," she continued.

The father of the child is still unknown, and from the looks of it, the ever-private Kaling will not be sharing that information anytime soon. Here's hoping Winfrey doesn't spill those details either.

Baby Born After Being Frozen as an Embryo for 24 Years

Last month, a baby was born in Tennessee resulting from an embryo that was frozen for 24 years to a mother who was 25 years old at the time the embryo was implanted.

This is a lot to take in, but entirely possible. An embryo frozen on Oct. 14, 1992, was donated to the National Embryo Donation Center, where, in March 2017, it was adopted, thawed and implanted in Tina Gibson. Then, on Nov. 25, 2017, Gibson gave birth to Emma Wren Gibson, her daughter. While Gibson went through pregnancy and childbirth like any woman after undergoing IVF, the embryo — created only one year before Gibson herself was born — is not genetically related to Gibson or her husband.

MoreTrying to Conceive? The Important Test Your Gynecologist Isn't Telling You About

When Gibson and her husband, Benjamin, adopted the embryo that later became their daughter Emma, they told CNN they were surprised when they were informed of the exact age of the embryo.

"Do you realize I'm only 25? This embryo and I could have been best friends," Gibson told CNN. "I just wanted a baby. I don't care if it's a world record or not."

Previous to this, the embryo that was frozen the longest and resulted in a birth was in the freezer for 20 years.

Embryo adoption (or donation) is a lesser-known option for people who are unable to conceive, but are able to go through pregnancy and childbirth. Frequently, when couples or individuals go through the IVF process, they create more embryos than they need or want to implant. They are then faced with the decision of what to do with the leftover embryos; their options include freezing them indefinitely (and paying for the storage space), providing them for medical research, destroying them or donating them to an organization that facilitates embryo adoption.

More: Why Embryo Adoption Was the Best Option for This Family

Given that IVF has been used in regular clinical practice since 1978, this means there are potentially embryos out there that have been frozen since then and, hypothetically, could be implanted and gestated now.

Some refer to these embryos as “snowbabies” given that they remain frozen for extended periods of time. (But to clarify: They're not babies; they are still embryos.)

And now, thanks to Emma's birth in Tennessee last month, we know that spending up to 24 years frozen does not necessarily negatively impact embryo quality, offering embryo adoption as another option for those who may have difficulty conceiving.

Catt Sadler Is Sending a Strong Message With Her Departure From E!

Women have spent a lot of 2017 standing up and taking back some of the power they deserve. But that doesn't mean things are equal yet. Nope, there's still more work to do, and veteran E! News anchor Catt Sadler just proved it.

After 12 years of working for the network, Sadler announced she's leaving E! after learning that her cohost, Jason Kennedy, was earning double her salary. What's worse, Sadler claims E! was trying to negotiate extending her contract, but refused to pay her anything close to what Kennedy makes.

"It’s almost insulting because you know you work really hard," Sadler told People magazine. "I’m a single mom of two kids. I’ve given my all to this network. I’ve sacrificed time away from my family and I have dedicated my entire career to this network. And when you learn something like that, it makes you feel very small and underappreciated and undervalued. It's heartbreaking."

E! said in a statement to People, "E! compensates employees fairly and appropriately based on their roles, regardless of gender. We appreciate Catt Sadler’s many contributions at E! News and wish her all the best following her decision to leave the network."

Anyone else rolling their eyes at that? We are days away from 2018, and women are still getting paid that much less than their male counterparts. Come on, America.

Sadler does, at least, have some good people in her corner. Jessica Chastain, who has pretty much always been outspoken about equality for women, tweeted her support for Sadler's decision.

"WOW this is so disappointing. When are companies like @e_entertainment going to understand that women should be paid fairly. 1/2 of her male counterpart is not appropriate," she wrote.

It's still unclear what Sadler's next move will be but for now, but it's safe to say her departure has left E! shaken up a little and hopefully, a little more aware of how its treating its best employees.

Ina Garten Reveals the One Fast-Food Item She Will Eat

When you think of Ina Garten, a lot of things come to mind: really good vanilla, ridiculously extravagant lunches, adorable husband Jeffrey and, of course, delicious and fancy home-cooked meals. She's definitely a bit of a food purist and only uses the best of the best ingredients in all of her meals. So it's probably safe to assume she wouldn't be caught dead in a fast-food restaurant, right?

Well, hold onto your jars of really good vanilla, because this news may come as a shock. There is one fast food restaurant Ina Garten actually approves of: In-N-Out Burger. And honestly, can you blame her? There are very few things I wouldn't do for an animal-style burger, and Garten feels the same way.

“I have to say, I don’t eat fast food at all, with one exception,” the chef told Today. “When we’re in California doing book tours, we always have to go to In-N-Out Burger.”

She didn't disclose any details about how she likes her burger, but she strikes me as an animal-style kind of gal. I'd even be willing to go as far as to say she orders her fries animal-style too. Ina, if you're reading this, please tweet me to confirm.

Ina's favorite fast-food meal is also the preferred choice of another mega-star chef.

"I know it was Julia Child’s favorite too, so it’s OK,” Garten says.

Prince William Isn't Afraid to Be Silly at the 2017 Royal Variety Show

Prince William is already a major international celebrity. It's not like he needed us to love him more, and yet — and yet — he pretty much naturally melts hearts with everything he does. It only helps that he's becoming more and more of a lighthearted, goofy dad as the years go on. Honestly, it's a really good look for him.

Once again, William has shown us just how goofy he can be. On Tuesday night, William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, were in the audience at the 2017 Royal Variety Show, and, needless to say, they stole the show a little bit. Specifically, William stole the show when he demonstrated his "Miranda gallop," which is a running joke from the TV show of the 2017 Royal Variety host, comedian Miranda Hart. William's a natural at it, of course, and was totally game to show the rest of the audience.

Obviously, everyone died watching this unfold. A thunderous laugh erupted as William acquiesced to one of the young performers onstage who asked him to join in their fun (read: performing the Miranda gallop). Viewers took to Twitter to shower praise on William as well.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s wedding is still months away, but we might have a huge clue to what the bride will be wearing on her big day. According to TMZ, Israeli fashion designer Inbal Dror was asked to design the future royal's wedding dress. Judging from the possibly legitimate sketches, she will not disappoint.

Per TMZ, who confirmed that Dror was contacted by the Royal Family to dress Markle for her special day, the former actor is mulling over three modern form-fitting wedding dresses — a huge departure from soon-to-be sister-in-law Kate Middleton‘s bridal gown which featured traditional lace and a huge train.

For the most part, the three sketches show similar figure-hugging dresses with high necks, long sleeves, and tons of delicate stitched down the front and on the sleeves. Though two of the dresses feature a mermaid-like silhouette, one gown stands out from the rest with its princess skirt (heh), which fans out at the bottom with an intricate lace design.

It’s important to note that until we hear the news from the Royal Family themselves, the sketches are pure speculation. Should You Pee Before Sex?

While there are a lot of widely held beliefs and myths about sex and sexual health, we give one particularly pervasive piece of advice to women: That they should always pee before having sex.

This, we’re told, possibly prevents urinary tract infections. But is this true, and is the practice of urinating before sex actually beneficial to most women? I spoke with Dr. Hilda Hutcherson, OB-GYN and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, to find out.

More: The Unexpected Health Benefits of Rebound Sex

So, for women who are susceptible to getting UTIs after they have sex, Hutcherson says that she tells them to urinate both after or before and after sex. "That’s because if you have urine in your bladder when you’re having sex, the bacteria that is pushed inside could multiply, especially if you don’t urinate within a few hours after intercourse," she notes.

Women who aren't particularly susceptible can still help prevent UTIs by peeing after sex. But Hutcherson's main takeaway is that urinating before sex is not necessary for all women But there are other reasons aside from preventing UTIs that compel many women to urinate before sex: mainly, pleasure. Hutcherson explains that from a pleasure standpoint, urinating before sexual activity is a good idea.

MoreWhat to Do When Your Partner Tells You They're a Sex Addict

"When some women get close to orgasm, they feel like they need to pee, which means that it changes their focus to their bladder," she says. "It gets in the way of them reaching orgasm."

If a woman is exploring female ejaculation, emptying her bladder first may also relieve her worries about urinating. It's well-known that a feeling similar to an urge to pee is a common sensation right before female ejaculation; knowing that your bladder is actually empty might be the difference between holding the orgasm in and letting go.

As for me, I know that I like to urinate before sex because I have a rather small bladder, and nothing is more annoying than asking to be untied during a bondage session to go to the bathroom. Peeing before sex enables me to play with my partner for longer periods of time without interrupting for a pee break. This, indeed, increases my pleasure and my ability to engage in my pleasure as well as my partners'. Have you ever tried giving a blow job when you really need to pee?

In general, what I learned from speaking with Hutcherson is that if you don’t have a tendency to develop UTIs, you shouldn’t worry about whether or not you pee before or after sex. Most women's immune systems properly deal with the bacteria that cause these infections. If you must, peeing after sex is the better choice.

If you do often get UTIs, however, speak to your family doctor or OB-GYN about proper hygiene measures you can take around sexual activity to minimize the risks. As Hutcherson explains, you will probably be told to urinate at least after, but ideally both before and after.

MoreHow to Tell Your Partner You'd Like an Open Relationship

Lastly, a full bladder can be a hindrance to orgasm for some women, so many of them prefer to engage in sexual activity after urinating. So stay hydrated, pee accordingly and enjoy yourself!

My Orgasms Change Throughout My Menstrual Cycle

$

As anyone who has experienced a period will know, menstrual cycles are a complicated business. Not only can cycles be unpredictable — even the best period-monitoring app in the world can’t seem to tell me when I’m ovulating — they can also affect a person’s orgasm.

I often have sex on my period and am a big believer in having sex as often as possible, mainly because it makes my body feel so much better (the healing powers and painkilling properties of orgasms). But one thing I’ve noticed is that my orgasms change in intensity and sensation throughout my menstrual cycle. While one week, I might experience intense and full-body orgasms, the next week, the climax could be altogether duller and muted.

More: Here's What Happens to Your Hormone Levels During Your Period

According to Psychology Today, several studies have determined that a person’s menstrual cycle has an automatic effect on their orgasms. As the publication notes, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville conducted a survey charting 115 women between the ages of 23 and 45. “[T]he women reported significantly more interest in sex and greater satisfaction from orgasm at mid-cycle.”

Similarly, Dutch researchers found that “genital blood flow increased the most around the time of ovulation,” leading to stronger orgasms. As Psychology Today concludes, there’s a definite link between women’s orgasms and their menstrual cycles.

Redbook spoke to Dr. Jamie Knopman, who said, “The cervix also changes position around the time of ovulation — its position becomes more ‘comfortable’ when you are ovulating, making intercourse less uncomfortable.” Basically, changes happening in your body linked to your menstrual cycle could be making sex better and increasing the chances of having an orgasm

The creators behind the period-tracking app Glow shared their research with SheKnows, taking “7.6 million sexual encounters into consideration.” According to their findings, “orgasm potential is directly related to when you get your period.” While the exact timing of the perfect orgasm might vary from person to person, Glow’s research suggests most women will be at their horniest one week before their period. And the scientific reason for this? “Because while a woman’s testosterone levels drop then, her libido increases because her uterine lining is thickening.” So the science might not sound sexy, but the changes in testosterone levels make sense.

More: The best workouts for every week of your menstrual cycle

For me, my orgasms vary massively depending on how my body is feeling, altered by both my menstrual cycle and my chronic illness. Consistently, my orgasms feel less intense in the week leading up to my period, despite sex still being enjoyable. When I reach the climax, during this time, my orgasms often feel zapped of intensity or they fail to send pleasure in all of the directions it’s meant to go. Conversely, during and right after my period, my orgasms usually feel fuller, more powerful and filled with twanging muscle spasms. That there’s a reason for these changes and a pattern that develops each month is reassuring.
