Meghan Markle Will Have to Follow New Rules When She Joins the Royal Family

0
0

Marry Harry? Sounds like a dream: all the perks of royalty without the pressure of becoming an actual monarch one day. In reality, Meghan Markle is about to get a rude awakening. Becoming a Duchess (which she probably will be after the wedding) isn't all designer dresses and diamond tiaras. There are a ton of royal rules to follow, and if she doesn't, she could find herself out in the cold like Fergie. Here are just a few.

No selfies

Markle revealed this rule herself during her first public appearance with Harry after their engagement was announced. It may not be entirely accurate, as other royals — including the queen — have been snapped in selfies during public appearances before, but it certainly makes sense to want to curtail the practice. If they did it for one person, they'd have to do it for everyone. They also don't sign autographs for the same reason.

Curtsying to Kate

There's a whole minefield of etiquette Markle will have to learn ASAP, not the least of which is who she will have to curtsey to on the daily. A 2005 document titled "Precedence of the Royal Family to Be Observed at Court" specifies the rather elaborate list above and below her. To complicate matters, who receives a curtsey and when is dependent upon who else is there. So, for example, she will always have to curtsey to the Duchess of Cambridge, formerly known as Kate Middleton, and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall — but she will only have to curtsey to Sophie, Countess of Wessex when Prince Edward is also in the room. If she is with Harry, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie will curtsey to her, but if Harry is not present, she will curtsey to them. She will always have to curtsey to Princess Anne, but never to Anne's daughter, Zara Phillips — but Phillips will have to curtsey to her if Prince Harry is present.

Wait your turn!

Precedence rears its head in many other places. When the royals gather, they enter rooms in order of succession. So Markle would have to wait until the queen and Prince Philip, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George and Princess Charlotte have all made their way to the dinner table before she and Harry can join the fam.

This practice even extends to who can arrive by car first. In this case, the arrivals happen in reverse order. For example, when the family gathers at Sandringham for Christmas, Camilla and Charles are always the last to arrive (the house is the country residence of the queen and Prince Philip, so they have no "arriving" to do).

Hunting & shooting

While not so much a rule as a practice, the royals love hunting and shooting. Harry himself is a hunter (despite speaking out against big game shooting in Africa), and Prince Philip hosts a shoot every year on Boxing Day at Sandringham. Markle has said she eats vegan during the week and has spoken on behalf of PETA. Holding herself at arm's length from one of the family's favorite activities won't win her any allies, so she might have to join in.

No politics in public

Markle has been vocal about her disdain for Donald Trump, calling him "misogynistic" and "divisive," and about her support for Hillary Clinton. Those days are over. The royals are forbidden from discussing politics in public and must appear impartial at all times. This extends as far as not being able to vote. Markle also has to give up her position with the United Nations as women's advocate for political participation and leadership.

Always travel with funeral clothes

Then-Princess Elizabeth was caught off guard when her father, King George VI, died suddenly while she was visiting Kenya with Prince Philip. She returned to the U.K. right away, but had no proper mourning clothes to wear for her first appearance on the airport tarmac after news of his death broke. A palace aide rushed clothes to her inside the plane, where she changed before emerging in proper mourning. Since then, all royals must carry funeral clothes with them on all trips.

She has to convert to the Church of England

Markle is from a Protestant family, but let's hope she isn't too attached to that particular faith. Since the monarch is the head of the Church of England, the entire family is expected to follow the faith too. Kensington Palace already confirmed Markle plans to convert ASAP.

Definitely should not get her toes sucked by a Texas millionaire

Any untoward behavior caught on film is not just bad for Markle; it's bad for the entire family. Fergie (the Duchess of York) was forced out after tabloids published photos of her frolicking with a Texas millionaire — and it was pretty clear they were having an affair by the way he was devouring her toes. Diana and Charles were ordered to divorce after they each gave explosive interviews about their extremely troubled marriage and respective affairs. If, heaven forbid, Markle's marriage to Harry starts to falter, she had better make sure it does so entirely behind closed doors or she will find herself persona non grata around Buckingham Palace.

Mario Batali Responds to Accusations of Sexual Misconduct

Mario Batali is the latest celebrity figure to be accused of sexual misconduct in the workplace. On Monday, Dec. 11, The New York Times reported that Batali, a high-profile restaurateur, was stepping away from the daily operations of his businesses as well as his ABC show The Chew.

Four women have reportedly accused Batali of touching them inappropriately. The accusations span over two decades and include behavior like breast groping and grabbing women from behind. One woman even alleged Batali made her straddle him so she could get to an exit he was blocking.

Batali released a statement all but confirming the behavior, which read, "Although the identities of most of the individuals mentioned in these stories have not been revealed to me, much of the behavior described does, in fact, match up with ways I have acted. That behavior was wrong and there are no excuses."

He added, "I have work to do to try to regain the trust of those I have hurt and disappointed. For this reason, I am going to step away from day-to-day operations of my businesses."

His company, Batali & Bastianich Hospitality Group, also released a statement. "Mr. Batali and we have agreed that he will step away from the company’s operations, including the restaurants, and he has already done so." The company set up a resource for employees to contact an outside investigation firm if they want to make claims against officials in the company.

ABC, the company behind Batali's show The Chew, also commented on the accusation. "ABC takes matters like this very seriously as we are committed to a safe work environment. While we are unaware of any type of inappropriate behavior involving him and anyone affiliated with the show, we will swiftly address any alleged violations of our standards of conduct."

It's unclear as of now if or when Batali will return.

Chris Martin Has Moved On From Jennifer Lawrence With Dakota Johnson

We've got a new Hollywood couple to obsess over! Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has apparently done another conscious uncoupling, splitting up with Jennifer Lawrence and getting together with Fifty Shades star Dakota Johnson.

More: Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin Celebrate Apple's Birthday

Johnson and Martin have been rumored to be dating for a while now, and a source recently told Us Weekly they're definitely a real thing.

"Dakota and Chris are definitely dating," the insider said. "They’ve gotten to know each other really well and are very comfortable from one another. Chris sends Dakota his music to get her opinion. It’s more than just a fling."

They're apparently serious, taking big trips together; Johnson and Martin were seen together in Israel last month, where they went to a Nick Cave concert. Afterward, they were spotted having a bite to eat with Cave at Yam Sheva restaurant in Herzliya.

"They came in and they were really, really nice, like extremely nice. It was a surprise," an onlooker told Us Weekly. "They sat with Nick Cave too. I didn’t see them kiss or hold hands or anything like that. They ordered some starters and not a lot of food."

That was after Martin and Johnson were spotted on what appeared to be a date at a Los Angeles sushi joint.

"Chris and Dakota walked in together and sat at a table for two tucked away in the corner," an eyewitness said about their outing, which happened last month. "They seemed very happy to see each other and immediately jumped into conversation. She was catching him up on work and the different projects she has coming up. She was telling him where she is going to be and asking him what he thought. They both seemed to really respect each other’s opinions. Chris was very charming and personable. His face lit up when he was talking to her. He hummed a little bit and asked her what she thought of a song. She clearly loves his music and was really into it. They were flirty and laughing the entire meal. He paid for dinner and held the door for her. They both thanked the chefs on the way out."

Angelina Jolie Wrote an Essay About 'Humanity's Shame'

Angelina Jolie has pretty much always been speaking out for women's rights. She works with countless charitable organizations, acts as a special envoy to the United Nations, is a Goodwill ambassador and more. The woman is woke.

And now, her new op-ed is here to make you realize that more people need to step up.

Jolie teamed up with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to write for The Guardian about her work on ending violence toward women and how in most parts of the world, there's still so much work to do.

"All violence against women betrays the fundamental promise in the U.N. Charter of equal rights and dignity for women," she wrote. "It is one of the prime reasons why women remain in a subordinate position in relation to men in most parts of the world."

More: Gwyneth Paltrow & Angelina Jolie Tell Their Harvey Weinstein Stories

She continued, "Despite being prohibited by international law, sexual violence continues to be employed as a tactic of war in numerous conflicts from Myanmar to Ukraine and Syria to Somalia. It includes mass rape, gang rape, sexual slavery, and rape as a form of torture, ethnic cleansing, and terrorism. It accounts in large part for why it is often more dangerous to be a woman in a war zone today than it is to be a soldier."

Jolie went on to make a powerful statement about how this kind of violence is "humanity's shame," but there is hope for a better future.

"It is humanity’s shame that violence against women, whether in peaceful societies or during times of war, has been universally regarded as a lesser crime," she wrote. "There is finally hope that we can change this. We owe it to ourselves – men and women alike – and to future generations."

What You Should Know About Reversing a Tubal Ligation

0
0

If you’ve ever thought about getting your tubes tied (otherwise known as a tubal ligation) because you’re done giving birth to children or because you know you never want to give birth, you might have thought of it as being a permanent situation. Despite that misconception, you can, in fact, get your tubes untied, but in terms of getting pregnant after a reverse tubal ligation, it’s not so straightforward.

In a tubal ligation, your fallopian tubes are either cut or blocked (Essure, an insert that gets placed into your fallopian tubes, prompts the formation of scar tissue so sperm can’t make it into fertilize eggs, is one manner of tubal ligation, although reversing this is more complicated). A tubal ligation can be done as an outpatient procedure, or you can have it done after vaginal birth or C-section. (There is some evidence to suggest this might be an easier situation to reverse.) There is a very small likelihood of pregnancy after getting your tubes tied. Plus, just because you can’t get pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t get STIs, so tubal ligation shouldn’t be an excuse to abandon barrier methods, like condoms.

More: The birth control method that just might save your life

In a reverse tubal ligation, your fallopian tubes are reconnected, but this is only possible if enough of the tube remains (if the tubal ligation you had was done via tying or clipping, as opposed to cauterizing, which isn’t reversible). It’s not possible to evaluate how much of the tube you have left without undergoing a hysterosalpingogram or an X-ray that discerns what’s happening with your fallopian tubes. (An HSG is a regular part of a full fertility assessment.)

Another consideration in successfully reversing a tubal ligation is the state of the fimbriae, which are the structures at the end of the fallopian tube that scoop up the egg when it’s released during ovulation. If those are damaged, there’s a lower possibility of pregnancy after the tubes are reattached.

However, even if you do have enough tube left and your fimbriae are great, it’s not just a matter of getting them untied and being on your way. There’s an increased chance of ectopic pregnancy after reversal. While a tubal ligation is an outpatient procedure, reversing it will mean a hospital stay of three days and a ceasing of normal activities, like work, for up to three weeks. And although 75 percent of those who undergo reverse tubal ligation will get pregnant in a year, that’s only if the tubes are long enough to be reattached and they’re not damaged.

More: Why I'm getting my tubes tied before age 30

Whether or not you should opt for tubal ligation reversal or pursue another route toward pregnancy, such as IVF, depends on a few factors.

Dr. Rebecca Chilvers is a reproductive endocrinologist with Fertility Specialists of Texas. She is trained in reversing tubal ligation (not all doctors are) and performs them, but also urges her patients to consider IVF as opposed to having their tubes untied since there are many variables at play. Successful pregnancy after reverse tubal ligation is more likely if you have enough eggs (ovarian reserve) and they’re of sound quality, your male partner’s sperm is in good shape, you’ve had no or minimal abdominal surgery (for endometriosisfibroidspelvic inflammatory disease, etc.), you’re young in terms of reproductive age (under 35) and your overall health is sturdy. Chilvers recommends waiting three months after surgery to start trying to conceive, and if the reversal has been successful, pregnancy should occur in between six to 12 months.

IVF is a much less invasive procedure than reverse tubal ligation, and rates of pregnancy with IVF are much higher than they once were (if you’re under 35, the likelihood of a live birth is around 40 to 50 percent). And while IVF is expensive, reverse tubal ligation isn’t exactly cheap and is rarely covered by insurance companies, although tubal ligation is.

Why, then, might one opt for untying one’s tubes? Chilvers says her patients choose it for religious reasons (some faiths consider intercourse the only appropriate way of conceiving a baby) and out of a desire to achieve pregnancy “naturally,” without the interventions involved in IVF. In addition to avoiding the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy, Chilvers points out that IVF, unlike reverse tubal ligation, has the ability to prolong one’s fertility since you can produce and freeze more than one embryo.

If you have had your tubes tied and you’re interested in getting pregnant, this is obviously a personal decision, and you should discuss it with your doctor, but ultimately, only you can decide which route is right for you.

How to Save Overheated Chocolate

0
0

One of the biggest bummers when doing the delicate work of melting chocolate is when you overheat it. You go from the perfect, silky chocolate to something stiff and unappetizing. Chocolate is remarkably delicate. Dark chocolate needs to stay below 120 degrees F, and milk chocolate beneath 110 degrees F. This allows it to be smooth, silky and creamy. Between finding the perfect temperature and trying to keep moisture out of the concoction, which can lead to your chocolate seizing, there are a lot of ways to ruin your perfect chocolate.

Luckily, if you do find you've accidentally made your chocolate too hot but haven't yet burned it, there are some ways to save it.

More: 18 Hot Chocolate Recipes That Will Change the Way You Feel About Winter

Cool it immediately

If you've overheated your chocolate, begin cooling it as quickly as possible. The longer it stays warm, the harder it's going to be to save. To cool the chocolate, remove it from the heat source, and transfer it to a cool, dry bowl. This immediately stops the melting process. Add in a few handfuls of chocolate chunks, and stir. The coolness of the chunks helps cool down the melted chocolate more quickly.

Whatever you do, please do not add ice cubes or cold water. This will make your chocolate curdle even more.

Run it through a sieve

A sieve is like a strainer, only it's more fine and used for sauces as opposed to pastas or noodles. After you've cooled down the chocolate, strain it through a sieve to get rid of any excess chunks. Consider adding a tablespoon or two of vegetable oil and mixing thoroughly, then straining again if the first time didn't fully solve the problem.

Use an immersion blender

An immersion blender is a handheld blender that looks like a stick. The purpose is to blend the foods in the container that they're in as opposed to transferring the ingredients to a regular blender. If you've cooled your chocolate and strained it through a sieve with no luck, then take out the immersion blender, and blend until smooth.

Tips to avoid overheating chocolate

  • Chop it up. Chocolate buttons are the best for melting purposes, but if you only have a regular bar of chocolate, break it up into smaller pieces before melting. This will help the chocolate melt evenly and quickly.
  • Avoid contact with water. When heating chocolate, make sure it does not come into contact with water or steam. This will cause it to seize — or become one gritty mass. Make sure all spoons and bowls are dry before adding chocolate to them.
  • Use small, heatproof bowls. Clear glass bowls work great since they don't trap the heat. This prevents the chocolate from further cooking once it's melted.
  • Use a metal spoon or spatula. Never use a wooden spoon. Wooden spoons may contain moisture from previous use, which will cause the chocolate to seize. They also may contain odors from other foods that will spoil the chocolate. Make sure to stir the chocolate frequently as it melts.

Luckily, this new look isn't going to stick around since Big Little Lies just got confirmed for a second season, which will include Kidman as one of its stars. Experiential Gifts Kids Will Never Forget

Holiday 2017 Gift Guide

The days of poorly made plastic toys that pile up in your house before they pile up in the landfill may well be behind us. More and more millennial parents — and their kids — are opting for experiences over things. So ditch the last-minute holiday mall lines and give your little one an experience of a lifetime this season.

Here are five ideas for experiential gifts, including some that definitely won’t break the bank.

Take a trip

OK, so this one might be a bank-breaker. But travel is likely the most mind-expanding, perspective-flexing, exciting educational activity you will ever do with your child. Hide a couple of plane tickets in a card — or inside one of those poorly made plastic toys. Or you can even create a little scavenger hunt with clues about the destination that lead your kid to the tickets.

While you're at it, why not opt for an eco-vacation that teaches your child an appreciation for nature? (Plus, eco-travel can be a lot cheaper). Some destinations that are big on eco-options — and which are on the more affordable side — include Costa Rica, St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Brazil (the Galápagos Islands are also amazing, but are a bit less accessible and more expensive).

But you don't have to drop serious cash on an international flight to take your kid somewhere new and exciting. Hop on a bus or train or take a drive for a one- or two-night stay somewhere out of town. You can even shop Airbnb for a cool rental like a teepee or a yurt to give your child really unique experience.

Participate in a cultural event

I don’t remember what dolls and games and sporting equipment I got for the holidays as a kid, but you'd better believe I remember when my parents took me to see my first Broadway show. Whether you nab tickets to a musical, a pass to the nearest planetarium (all the better if it’s a special stay-up-past-bedtime show where you all wear pajamas and drink hot chocolate and look at the starry sky — not that I've done anything like that) or game day seats to see your kid’s favorite team, you can bet kiddo will be thrilled. For a less pricey option, you can even come up with a themed tour around town (pizza history tour? desserts from around the world?) and lead it yourself. No matter what you choose, a cultural activity that introduces your child to something they haven’t done — or something they love to do — is a gift of memories that will last a lifetime.

Book an adventure activity

Has your kid been bugging you for two years to go to that theme park? Why not surprise them with a springtime day pass as their holiday gift? They’ll look forward to the experience all winter, and you'll both get an awesome day together riding roller coasters and eating hot dogs to your heart’s content (in that order and not the reverse unless you want to risk some seriously unwanted events).

If you know you have a pint-size adrenaline junkie on your hands, think about an adventure activity your child hasn’t yet tried. It might be rock climbing or indoor skydiving or a zip line ride in the woods; even a horseback riding lesson can be a major adventure. There are plenty of cool activities that cost under $100 and will provide the thrill of a lifetime for your little daredevil.

Be a tourist in your own town

How many times have you walked by that building with the rotating restaurant on top where everyone who visits your town eats, but your family has never been? Have you eyed that whale-watching tour, but never actually set foot offshore? Have you ventured to the other side of town to explore those weird little food joints? Are you a New Yorker who's never taken your kid to the Empire State Building? Don’t underestimate how much your child might love some close-to-home fun. Take advantage of what’s right in front of you, especially if it’s something you’ve never tried before — and enjoy being tourist for a day in your own neck of the woods.

Spend quality time together — anywhere

This is the easiest option of all. You might assume kids want stuff, but when faced with a choice to receive material goods or spend more time with their parents, most kids choose their parents every time. In this age of overworked moms and dads and overbooked kids, all with too many digital distractions, the best gift we can give one another this holiday season is our time. Give your child the promise of evenings with no phone and just your full, undivided attention; make coupons for things like, “build a fort,” “scary story time,” “make s’mores” or “tickle session,” and let them cash them in whenever they want. Just make sure you take the gift seriously: Turn the phone off and enjoy real quality time with your child.

Regardless of what your budget is for the holidays this year, one thing is for sure: Love is the most important gift we can give one another. So flex your creative muscles and provide your child with an experience they will never forget — because you can't put a price on that.

Gwyneth Paltrow Has a New Broadway Gig, & We Have So Many Questions

0

Gwyneth Paltrow is having a pretty chill but also pretty great 2017. While she's kept a relatively low profile, acting-wise, she's likely engaged to her boyfriend, Brad Falchuk, and as of Tuesday, Dec. 12, she's going to be coproducing a Broadway musical. Rejoice, all you Paltrow fans out there, because soon you're going to be able to bask in the glory of a musical with the actor's beautiful Goop-y fingerprints all over it.

More: Is Gwyneth Paltrow Secretly Engaged to Her Boyfriend, Brad Falchuk?

So, what exactly is the new musical Paltrow is coproducing? Well, according to Deadline, the musical will be called Head Over Heels, and it actually features a really interesting (and kinda bonkers) mashup — much like one of the many great Glee episodes she starred in way back when. The synopsis of Head Over Heels indicates the show is "based upon The Arcadia by Sir Philip Sidney…a tantalizing odyssey wrought with mistaken identities, jealous lovers, romance and scandal. This lavishly quick-witted new musical takes us on an extravagant journey where everything (and everyone) is not quite what it seems." Oh, and bonus: the songs of '80s pop girl group The Go-Go's will serve as the musical portion of Head Over Heels. It definitely sounds like the kind of light, fun romp that would do well on Broadway.

But, uh, what's the deal with this book, The Arcadia? I decided to do a little digging because I'd never heard of the book before, and folks, it turns out that its full title is The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia and it was written in the late 16th century (yes, 16th) century by an English author and nobleman. So, basically, Paltrow might somehow be helping to channel some Shakespeare in Love vibes into what is presumably an '80s-tinged romantic comedy musical. Ex-squeeze me?

More: Is There Any Bad Blood Between Gwyneth Paltrow & Reese Witherspoon?

I mean, if the plot is truly going to be what is currently being described, an updated Renaissance romantic romp for the Great White Way infused with songs like "We Got the Beat," "Our Lips Are Sealed," "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" and the titular "Head Over Heels," then sure, mash it up. But why these two things? And will it really work? And honestly, who suggested bringing The Arcadia and The Go-Go's together in the first place? Like, who suggested adapting an obscure late 16th-century novel into a musical and the rest of the creative team was like, "Hell, yeah, let's do this!"?

I'm sure all my questions will be answered in due course, but for now, I am confused, intrigued, excited and a variety of other feelings I can't quite name.

How to Combine Baby Names to Create a Unique & New One

0
0

After reading through endless books and websites and hearing dozens of recommendations from friends and family, you've finally got a few baby names you like. The problem? You just can't decide. It can be agonizing to try to choose, particularly if you end up with two names that both have significant meanings for you.

If you're stuck, we've got a recommendation: Try a combo. This technique allows you to keep what you love about both names without having to get rid of one; plus, you end up with something totally unique. There are a few techniques you can use to combine names, and each method has its perks. Try them out and see what you come up with — it just might be the perfect name.

Baby name-combining technique No. 1: Hyphenate

One of the simplest ways of combining baby names is to link them with a hyphen. This allows both names to retain their individual meaning while creating a new moniker that will be unique to your child.

How to use this: This technique is great if both parents have separate ideas of what the child's name should be. List the names in whatever order sounds most natural; Robyn and Ava can become Robyn-Ava, while John and David become John-David. The key to successfully combining two names this way? Use short names, folks. Browse our lists of one-syllable names and two-syllable names for inspiration.

Baby name-combining technique No. 2: Portmanteau names

Looking for a unique baby name? Take two and make a new one. Start with a couple of names you like, and consider how you can piece them together to form a special new combo name.

How to use this: Techniques can include dropping portions of each name, interweaving the names or rearranging them. For instance, Audrey and Melissa could become Aulissa or Melrey. Samantha and Isabella could become Anthabella or even Samisa. You just have to be committed to creativity.

Baby name-combining technique No. 3: Using prefixes

One big ongoing trend for combining names is to take a relatively simple or common name and add a prefix to it. This gives the name a more personalized feel.

How to use this: First, choose the name you want to start with. Then, try it with a few prefixes — such as De-, Ke-, La-, Le- or Ra-. For instance, Anne could become Deanne or Luca could become Keluca. Be sure to keep the name that you start with short though. Longer names could get too long and lose the interest ("Ralexander" is maybe a mouthful).

Baby name-combining technique No. 4: Combining parent names

Want to imbue your child's name with a sense of family history? Combine parent names for a name that means everything. This concept is similar to technique No. 2.

How to use this: Use Mom's and Dad's first or last names to create an all-new name. You can also use a combo of grandparent names or godparent names, and feel free to mix and match syllables. For instance, Silvia and Paul could become Saul or Pavia. Danielle and Jessica could become Danica or Jessielle... the possibilities are endless.

That Time George Clooney Gave 14 of His Best Friends $1 Million Each

0

The holiday season is in full swing, and one of the many ways to delight in the seasonal vibes is to give back to others. The push to be charitable is a hallmark of this time of year, and many folks can attest that there's nothing quite so good as giving back.

More: Why You May Not See George Clooney in Any Movies for a While

It turns out George Clooney might be one of those people. His close friend, Rande Gerber (who also happens to be Cindy Crawford's husband), recently recalled during an episode of MSNBC's Headliners one time when Clooney's charitable giving streak really broke the mold: he gave $1 million dollars to each of his 14 friends. That's right; Clooney gave away a cool $14 million to his friends, probably without breaking a sweat because he's George flippin' Clooney.

George Clooney Eyebrows

According to Gerber, Clooney invited each of his 14 closest friends ("the Boys," as they call themselves) in September 2013 for a special surprise. "George begins to say, 'Listen, I want you guys to know how much you've meant to me and how much you mean to me in my life," Gerber recalls. "'I came to LA. I slept on your couch. I'm so fortunate in my life to have all of you and I couldn't be where I am today without all of you.'"

And then, with a rather dramatic flourish according to Gerber, Clooney encouraged each of his 14 friends to pick up the individual suitcases he had given them. (I mean, really? Suitcases full of money?)

OK, so anyway, Gerber says at this point Clooney gestured toward the suitcases and said, "'So it was really important to me that while we're still all here together that I give back. So I want you all to open your suitcases.'" And there it was: $1 million in $20 bills. Totally bananas, right?

But perhaps the most heartwarming part of the story is not how the money was given, but who the money was given to. Though Gerber didn't name names, the story implies it was just Clooney's well-off celebrity friends receiving what would be a casual $1 million; but these were men who had been integral in helping Clooney early in his life, regular men who were still living their regular lives decidedly not in the Hollywood spotlight.

Now, if that doesn't keep you warm this holiday season, in addition to all the songs and sweaters and general cheer, then I don't know what will.

These Organizations Help People Afford the Cost of IVF

0
0

So you’ve decided on in vitro fertilization. Now, how are you going to pay for it? According to the IVF Cost Calculator (yes, it’s a thing), the cost of IVF varies. Factors that affect how much it will cost include how old you are, which impacts the live birth rate per transfer (or the odds of actually bringing home a baby); how many cycles you want to do; pre-cycle tests (i.e. semen analysis, infectious disease screening, ultrasound); and whether you want to freeze any additional viable embryos for future implantation.

If you’re a 35-year-old woman, using your own eggs (as opposed to a donor), you’re planning to freeze some leftover embryos and you have a 51 percent chance of having a baby, the procedure is going to cost you about $12,850, and that’s at the low end of the money spectrum.

More: 5 Things No One Tells You About IVF

I asked some folks who had had IVF or were planning to have it how they had paid for the procedure or how they were planning to pay for it. S told me she was considering going to Cyprus, where the procedure was less expensive and the clinic was top-notch.

L and her partner, who have a 3-month-old as a result of IVF, used their savings for the first round and took a loan from her partner’s parents for the second.

More than one person reported getting a part-time job to pay for it. Another enrolled herself in a clinical trial, and still another might set up a GoFundMe with her partner.

There are insurance policies that cover IVF and the costs associated with it. K’s two rounds of hormones and two egg retrievals came to $13,213. Her health insurance paid for the drugs and one year of free storage was included in the retrieval process, so she’ll start paying $100 per month out of pocket in March 2018 until she chooses to implant them. Some states, like Massachusetts, have state mandates that insurance cover IVF. The Massachusetts Infertility Mandate requires insurance companies to treat IVF as though it were any other disease requiring medical coverage. There are exceptions, however — companies don’t have to cover surrogacy, experimental fertility treatments or egg freezing.

These numbers are really sobering, and they make undertaking the realities of IVF seem even more daunting.

“You can finance over time the cost of an IVF cycle as opposed to a one-time payment,” says Dr. Mark Trolice, director of Fertility CARE: The IVF Center. “The disadvantages are the high interest rate and the qualifications of credit score.”

More: Tear-Jerking Pregnancy Announcements From IVF Parents-to-Be

Not everyone has insurance coverage, people to borrow from or a savings account, and if that’s the case for you, how do you access IVF? “Because most insurance plans don’t cover these services, fertility patients tend to have high incomes to begin with,” Stephanie M. Lee wrote in a June 2017 BuzzFeed article.

If you don’t have a high income, one answer to affording IVF might be organizations like Aspire Fertility, located in Houston, Dallas and Atlanta, whose goal is to help patients and their partners navigate the overwhelming nature of the process and the cost.

“At Aspire, we discuss financing options with our patients on the initial consultation, and a financial adviser is part of the team looking after them once they start treatment.” says TJ Farnsworth, the founder and CEO. “In the long run, better-quality IVF treatment can save you money if it reduces the number of IVF cycles you need to go through. A single successful cycle is more cost-effective than two cheap but failed courses of treatment.” Farnsworth also notes that there are scholarships and grants for IVF for folks who qualify, as well as loans, and says that treatments are tax-deductible.

Future Family is another company committed to guiding people through the treacherous world of paying for IVF. You can buy a subscription package for a monthly fee that includes access to medical professionals by email, text and phone; the ability to schedule hormone tests; and more. Future Family will pay for the service, and you pay them back. You can sign up for a standard IVF plan (one cycle) and pay $250 a month for a minimum of five years or a maximum of 10. It’s cheaper than your average IVF procedure, but most people need more than one cycle of IVF for success, meaning that you are probably going to spend much more than $250 a month before you have a baby.

Seeking out support while you’re planning your next steps in this process is essential. There’s unbelievable stress that comes with facing infertility and figuring out what your options are, especially when pursuing infertility treatment can mean additional expenses accrue and expectations may need to be recalibrated regularly.

More: Why I Told My Boss & Coworkers I'm Getting IVF

“The impact is one on both your emotional health and financial health,” says Mollie Hyuck, codirector and intended parents case manager of Egg Donor Connections. “When undertaking the IVF process 'planning' for the financial process can be challenging, as recommendations for treatment protocols may change [and] length of time for an egg retrieval or a cycle can vary, thus potentially leading to more out-of-pocket expenses that may not have necessarily been planned. It requires a realization that some modifications may occur through the medical protocols, which could also impact financial commitment.”

John Stamos Will Finally Be a Dad — & Don't Worry, He's Rehearsed This

Guys, Uncle Jesse is going to be a dad.

In October, actor John Stamos announced he and Caitlin McHugh were heading down the aisle; now, they're about to welcome their first child. In an interview for People TV, the Full House star, known for playing the coolest uncle on the planet in the early ‘90s, admitted he’d been rehearsing to be an IRL dad for a pretty long time.

“I’ll be a fun dad. I’ve been practicing for a long time,” he said to host Jess Cagle. “I’ve done every shtick you can do with a baby on TV… all the bits and jokes and diaper gags. I’ll probably just do all that stuff.”

Stamos explained he’s officially gone “full adult” and that he finally had to “straighten up.” About a minute into the 40-minute interview, the actor began to well up at the thought of his own parents, specifically at the memory of his dad.

More: The Best of John Stamos' Hair

“I had the best father in the world. It kills me that my parents aren’t here to be a part of this.” Stamos also explained that to him, his father will always be larger than life. In that way, he’ll always be a kid at heart. “You know how you put your father on a pedestal... you know... like he’s a superhero? Then you get older and you go, ‘Oh, he’s just a man.’ I never got to that point.”

As for the baby’s sex, we’ll have to wait until the big birthday to find out; Stamos revealed he and McHugh want to be surprised. But if you thought Uncle Jesse raising the Tanner girls was epic, surely IRL Stamos will give Uncle Jesse a run for his money.

How to Prevent the Mercury Retrograde From Ruining Your Holiday

0
0

Well, friends, in case you weren’t already aware: Not only are we in the midst of the holiday season, we’re also in the middle of Mercury retrograde. This cycle started around the 2nd in the U.S. and will last through the 22nd. What does that mean exactly?

“Mercury retrograde is a transit that occurs when the planet Mercury in the sky gives the illusion of orbiting the sun backwards,” Tracey Rogers, life coach and astrologer, explained. It happens to all the planets, but Mercury does it three to four times a year and tends to wreak a little havoc.

What, exactly, is Mercury disrupting? “Mercury represents transportation, technology and communication in our day-to-day,” Rogers said. “When this planet turns retrograde, our cars breakdown, we experience glitches with our cells and laptops, there are communication delays, emails stuck in our outbox, traffic delays, lost keys and everything else that would bring minor frustrations.”

More: Your December 2017 Horoscope Has Arrived

So travel delays, mail frustrations and losing things? Gee, sounds like a perfect recipe for the holidays. That’s because Mercury was known as a trickster, Ysanne Lewis, a timing adviser, author of The Time Catcher and astrologer of 39 years told me. But Mercury retrograde isn’t all bad. “Things can come back into our lives, people we haven’t seen for ages or heard from. And also we can revisit places we thought we might never visit again," she said.

Plus, there is plenty you can do to keep the more frustrating aspects of Mercury retrograde from ruining your holiday. Here are a few ideas.

1. Don’t rush holiday messages

“Give plenty of time if you're mailing correspondence or holiday cards,” Rogers said. It’s a time ripe for postal service delays and email delivery errors.

2. Give yourself extra time for travel

“I don’t want to be a doom monger; I’m not talking about planes falling out of the air or anything. I’m talking about delays, cancellations,” Lewis said. “It’s usually common sense, but apply much, much more at this time.” And they both said you should double check your plans entirely and have a backup. Mercury retrograde is notorious for best-laid plans being mis-booked.

More: A Real Witch Weighs In on the Growing Popularity of Witchcraft

3. Especially avoid the 23rd for travel if you can

Lewis explained that on the 23rd, Mercury is going back into forward motion, which means things get shaken up even more. If you can steer clear of traveling on that day entirely, do it.

4. Keep your gift receipts & get the warranty

“It’s not a good time to make a purchase because you might want to take it back,” Lewis said. So keep your gift receipts and be ready to use them. Rogers added, “If you are buying any major electronics, vehicles or appliances for the holidays, get a warranty.”

5. Tap into your intuitive side

“Mercury tends to go retrograde at times when we most need it to, when we need to pace ourselves. We need to use our right hemisphere brains more: our intuition, imagination, seeing the bigger picture,” Lewis said.

More: How to Deal With a Toxic Family During the Holidays

6. Expect plans to change

The reality is, during Mercury retrograde, people’s plans are likely to change. “Maybe be a bit more kind, have a bit more latitude, be a little more flexible,” Lewis said.

7. Practice patience & know things will go back to normal

“Be patient if you run into schedule changes with holiday gatherings or vendors who fall through if planning a company party,” Rogers said. “Meanwhile, at the dinner table, try not to get too upset if someone says the wrong thing! Life will feel back to normal in the new year.”

The SAG Awards Nominees Are in, & It's a Big Change From the Golden Globes

0
0

Awards show season is in full swing this week with Tuesday's Golden Globe award nominations and the 2018 SAG Award nominations coming out on Wednesday. There were plenty of snubs and surprises when the Golden Globe nominations were announced; today's SAG award nominations look pretty different — and we can get behind it. Here's how they differ, here's how they were similar and here's what left us feeling a lot of feelings.

More: Piers Morgan Slams Meryl Streep's Golden Globes Speech as 'Elitist Snobbery'

The SAG Awards don't separate their Best Actress and Best Actor in films by type, meaning drama and comedy get put together unlike the Golden Globes. This also means that the race is even more intense than might be expected because the competition pool is that much bigger. A closer look at the nominations in these prestige categories reveals that a lot of the same actors are in contention for the big award at both the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes, too. Of the five nominees for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan are all nominated for the SAG Awards, just in different categories. The same is nearly true for the Best Actor in a Leading Role Category at the SAGs, too. Of the five nominees, Timothée Chalamet, James Franco, Daniel Kaluuya, Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington came out on top here and the only actor not nominated in this similar category at the Golden Globes is Franco.

In the Golden Globes, Kumail Nanjiani's utterly charming romantic dramedy, The Big Sick, was completely snubbed. For the SAG Awards, it snagged a couple of nominations: Holly Hunter for her supporting role performance, and the entire cast for an Outstanding Cast award. Get Out was also passed over for Golden Globe nominations it definitely deserved, and while there's no directing or screenwriting SAG Awards to give writer/director Jordan Peele his due, the film was also nominated for a much-deserved Outstanding Cast award.

More: Tom Hiddleston Apologizes for Being Human

Wonder Woman, which was the highest grossing female-directed film of all time, finally scored a nomination — for its stunt ensemble. And Veep, which was also left out of the Golden Globe noms after years of Emmy success, snagged nominations for Best Actress (Julia Louis Dreyfus) and Best Comedy Ensemble.

Just like in the Golden Globes, HBO's breakout hit Pretty Little Lies dominated, with nominations for Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley. Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgård also managed to net SAG nominations for their Big Little Lies work but failed to make an impact for the Golden Globes nominations.

There were few surprises in the SAG Awards Ensemble category, with Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, This Is Us, The Crown and The Handmaid's Tale getting nominations.

And finally, it's already been announced the Morgan Freeman will get the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award this year.

Beyoncé Is Not Down With a Beer Company Using Her for Inspiration

Beyoncé sent a cease and desist letter to Lineup Brewing after they cleverly named a pilsner Bïeryoncé in her honor. Unfortunately, she wasn't crazy in love with the idea.

Katarina Martinez, owner and head brewer of the Brooklyn-based brewery, told Pitchfork, "As a Hispanic, female-run business, I am very inspired by her so I thought I'd pay homage. We're disappointed she didn't take it as a compliment, but oh well. It was fun while it lasted!"

Other than Bïeryoncé, Lineup Brewing is known for using their beers to pay homage to powerful women in pop culture. One of their other beers is called, "I Bet You Think This Beer Is About You," a reference to the 1972 Carly Simon song, "You're So Vain." Martinez also reportedly plans to name one of her bubbly beverages after Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the near future.

According to Bon Appétit, Martinez and her company originally produced Bïeryoncé back in October 2016. Martinez was inspired after she purchased tickets to a Beyoncé concert but then was unable to go.

"I was terribly sad about it, so I decided to name it in her honor," Martinez explained. "I’m also a Hispanic, woman-owned and operated business, so I really look up to her and the strength and empowerment she promotes with women."

The beer was so popular, the company decided to rerelease it in November 2017. But it only took Beyoncé's team about two weeks to catch wind of the unauthorized branding.

It's a shame too, because Bon Appétit reports the beer is quite tasty. But as we all know by now, lemonade is Beyoncé's drink of choice.
