11 Most Infamous Moments From Primetime Emmys History

$

The time has come once again to dive into the Emmys. With the biggest night in television happening, well, on television, it's little wonder that we might get nostalgic for ceremonies of yesteryear. The Emmys have been around since 1949, which means there are plenty of infamous Emmy moments.

More: Constance Wu Presenting at the Emmys Really Fired Up Viewers

While the Emmys isn't exactly the kind of place where you might expect something to happen that will go down in infamy, there have certainly been some infamous and memorable moments. Sure, it's not the MTV Movie Awards, where things get wild frequently, but looking back, there have been some odd acceptance speeches and very unusual presenter moments that surely demand our attention. Take a look.

1. Sofía Vergara is put on a pedestal, & it's very weird

Falling into the "more awkward" category of infamous Emmys moments, Sofía Vergara was put on a literal pedestal to be looked at while Bruce Rosenblum, chairman of the Emmys awarding body, gave facts and figures about the voting body while people were made to look at Vergara's body. Very weird.

2. Kathy Griffin thanked Jesus for her Emmy in her own special way

Kathy Griffin Emmys

Kathy Griffin dares to live outside convention most of the time, so naturally, she took her chance to make her Emmys speech count by telling Jesus to "suck it" at the Emmys.

3. Betty Thomas is the butt of the joke at the 1985 Emmys

Betty Thomas Emmys

When Betty Thomas won her Emmy in 1985, a wild thing happened: professional imposter Barry Bremen hijacked the podium, posing as an official, to announce Thomas wasn't there to accept the award even though she clearly was. The show quickly cut to commercial and thankfully, Thomas was able to laugh it off.

4. Patty Duke's confusing acceptance speech

Considered very confusing and controversial at the time, the well-liked Patty Duke gave a slow, wandering thank-you speech that led many to speculate after the 1970 Emmys whether she was on drugs.

It's odd to say this now but once upon a time, the president of the United States of America appeared in overalls and a straw hat singing the Green Acres theme song with Will & Grace star Megan Mullally.

6. Tom Bergeron drops Heidi Klum at the 2008 Emmys

While performing a dance number at the 2008 Emmys, Tom Bergeron proceeded to accidentally drop Heidi Klum on her hip and no, it wasn't part of the routine. Once they got offstage, they reportedly showed off Klum's bruised hip as proof.

7. Barbara Stanwyck's wardrobe snafu in 1961

Looking back, it's a mild moment, but for old Hollywood star Barbara Stanwyck, getting her cape caught in her chair on live TV was kind of a big thing, even if she looked totally graceful trying to untangle herself.

After a tumultuous couple of years and with rumors and shocking reports about his personal life spread around in the papers, Sheen returned to the Emmys stage in 2011 to apologize and wish his Two and a Half Men cast the best of luck without him.

9. Sally Fields' odd anti-war (but not really) speech

Sally Fields lost the plot a little when she got up to accept the Best Lead Actress Emmy. After saying her thank-yous, she began rambling a little, peppering in commentary about the ongoing war (presumably in Afghanistan) before getting cued by the music to exit the stage, wherein she hastily circled back to making her speech about her award.

10. Matthew Perry smooching Doris Roberts

According to TMZ, Michelle Rounds, ex-wife of entertainer Rosie O'Donnell, was found dead in her home on Monday in an apparent suicide.

"I am saddened to hear about this terrible tragedy," O'Donnell told TMZ. "Mental illness is a very serious issue affecting many families. My thoughts and prayers go out to Michelle's family, her wife and their child."

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office stated that Rounds' body was discovered at her residence on Sept. 11 at 7:07 a.m.

O'Donnell met Rounds, an executive recruiting consultant, in 2011, and the couple became engaged just a few months later. They married in 2012 and adopted a baby together, Dakota, at the beginning of 2013. But just two years after their marriage, at the end of 2014, they separated and entered into a bitter divorce and custody battle. All legal matters were resolved in court by the spring of 2016, and both parties said they were happy with the outcome: a divorce settlement based on the couple's prenuptial agreement and joint custody of now-4-year-old Dakota. O'Donnell, who was also briefly married to marketing executive Kelli Carpenter, told the media, however, that she would never marry again.

More: Don't Expect Rosie O'Donnell to Get Married Ever Again

Rounds allegedly struggled with her break-up with O'Donnell. In September 2015, she reportedly attempted suicide in a Nanuet, New York, hotel room and had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment. She was saved when an anonymous tipster told authorities of her plans and Clarkstown Police broke down her hotel room door. An unnamed source told Radar Online that Rounds had had a bitter fight with O'Donnell related to the divorce and had consumed wine and pills in an attempt to take her own life.

On Friday, after the story broke, O'Donnell retweeted a fan who had a message about suicide prevention.

The Epidural Truth — Straight From an Anesthesiologist

$

Does it really hurt when the needle goes in? Can the medication stall labor? Will you be able to feel anything if you get one? If you’re open to pain medication, when is the best time to get one?

While an epidural may offer much-desired pain relief, there are a few things you probably want to know if you’re thinking about adding one to your birth plan.

While everyone seems to have different experiences with epidurals, we talked to Dr. James Lozada, an anesthesiologist at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, for more insights into what to expect if you’re considering an epidural (neuraxial analgesia) during childbirth. (Don’t confuse it with a spinal block, which is a one-time shot of medication also delivered into the spinal area.)

More: Can an epidural prevent postpartum depression?

You’ll probably get a urinary catheter too

After an epidural is placed in your back, you are unable to walk around, so a Foley catheter may be inserted for a variety of reasons. This will drain your bladder. Lozada explained that it can prevent injuries to the bladder during vaginal and cesarean deliveries because an empty bladder makes it easier for the baby to descend.

“During cesarean delivery in particular, a Foley catheter allows anesthesiologists to monitor urine, which may be the first sign of unintentional bladder or ureter injury,” he said.

Other patients require close monitoring of fluid intake and urine output, especially for patients with preeclampsia. Epidural (and spinal) medications can lead to bladder distension or trouble urinating — another reason catheters are advised.

“When a Foley catheter is placed, most hospitals wait until after the woman has an epidural or spinal, so she doesn’t feel the catheter being inserted,” Lozada said, adding that it’s not always possible. During a vaginal delivery, the Foley catheter is removed just before pushing.

So, do you really need a catheter? There’s no universal standard of care for catheter timing or placement, which is why we may know some women who had to have them and other who didn’t. It is standard, however, to place a Foley catheter for high-risk pregnancies, cesarean deliveries and in those patients who need close monitoring.

“There is ongoing research looking at whether there is a difference in Foley catheter placement versus intermittent catheterization as needed during labor for healthy women having vaginal deliveries,” Lozada explained.

It’s pretty quick

Placing a labor epidural is normally a relatively quick process — typically about 20 to 30 minutes, Lozada said.

“Most of my patients are grateful to have pain relief, surprised at how easy epidural placement is and are able to rest for the first time during labor,” he added.

It’s not too painful

The procedure involves you sitting on the edge of the bed or laying down on your side. You will be given IV fluids to help your blood pressure stay normal. The worst part is an injection of lidocaine in the back, which numbs the area, which will burn for 10 to 15 seconds, then go away. After that, you’ll probably just feel pressure when the epidural catheter is inserted. It’s possible some of the medications we use will cause itching, which most women tolerate well. Itching usually resolves in an hour or so. The legs will likely have numbness or tingling. You won’t be able to get up and walk after the epidural is placed.

Epidural placement is a sterile procedure, so many places ask visitors to leave the room during placement to decrease the chance of infection.

The epidural will take away sharp pain, but you may still feel pressure… something Lozada said he wants women to feel so they have some control over pushing.

It can shorten or lengthen labor

While an epidural won’t increase the rate of a cesarean, Lozada notes, it can shorten or prolong labor depending on the stage a woman is in when the medication is administered.

Labor epidural has a variable effect on the first stage of labor, shortening in some women and prolonging in others, he said. “Whatever effect does occur is short, has no adverse effects on mother or baby and has little clinical significance,” Lozada added.

If given during the second stage of labor, it adds about 20 minutes to the labor.

According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, so long as progress is being made, the baby is doing well and the mother’s pain is controlled, duration of labor alone does not mandate intervention. They contend that extending the second stage of labor will help many women deliver vaginally.

More: The epidural I never had but desperately wanted

Not everyone can have an epidural

Almost all women can receive neuraxial analgesia. Only a few absolute contraindications exist:

  • Brain tumor or other medical condition that increases pressure in the brain
  • Infection at site of needle placement
  • Low platelets (often seen with preeclampsia or other medical conditions)
  • Taking anticoagulation medications

You can get one at any point

If you know you want one, speak to your doctor or the anesthesiologists sooner than later. You may want to ask the nurse how much notice you need to give between the time of request and administration (my midwife advised that I give the hospital at least a half hour, for example).

“For many years, [the] ACOG recommended that women delay requesting labor epidural until their cervix was dilated to 4 centimeters. Many hospitals adopted that and continue the policy,” Lozada noted.

However, in light of more recent studies showing labor epidural has no impact on the cesarean rate, ACOG revised its recommendation to say that women shouldn’t fear an unnecessary C-section when they choose a pain relief method and that a woman can have the medication whenever she wants.

Overall, Lozada said having an epidural is a personal choice that is impacted by physical, cultural, socioeconomic and emotional factors.

More: Should You Consider Laughing Gas to Ease Labor Pains?

While neuraxial analgesia (epidural/spinal) is considered the most effective pain-relief method, other techniques may offer women the amount of relief and labor experience they seek, he added.

Are you searching high and low for a kick-ass gift for a new mom? No, not a gift for her wee babe — but her, the glorious mother ship who has carried and birthed a new being all on her own. Babies — and baby gifts — are cute and all, but why not channel your thoughts toward a gift your new-mom friend will know is for her? She did just spend 40-ish weeks carrying around a human in her body, after all.

A blinged-out water bottle

Water bottles

New moms need to drink loads of water, especially if they're nursing. Give your pal a few of these water bottles so she can load them up, keep them nearby and never have to worry about her water becoming lukewarm over the course of a day. (Amazon, $16)

A night light that's basically installation art

Night light
Image: Amazon

OK, this night light is marketed for babies, but look how cute it is! Your mom friend is going to need some light when she's up in the middle of the night and trying to keep kiddo as pseudo-sleepy as possible. This birdie light is portable and rechargeable, and it casts a soft, dreamy glow. (Amazon, $25)

The fanciest candle

There's a reason candles are so often a go-to gift — especially ones that get great reviews because they last forever and smell great. (Anthropologie, $28)

All the snacks

Naturebox Snacks

Eating may be a challenge when a new mom is trapped under a sleeping newborn. Give her a deliciously loaded snack box that she can keep handy wherever she might be. This variety pack from Naturebox is called the Family Snack Pack, but really, she'll want it all to herself. (Naturebox, $28)

The coziest blanket

A non-diaper-bag diaper bag

Diaper bag

Diaper bags are utilitarian, but they often look like, well, diaper bags. Fortunately, there are tons of totes that serve a diaper bag's purpose while maintaining an air of "I'm an adult, really." This selection, found at Nordstrom, is an actual diaper bag (with plenty of room and oodles of pockets), but it doesn't look like one. (Nordstrom, $75)

A face mask that's "pregnancy glow" in a bottle

LUSH Mask of Magnaminty

While a mom's skin may have looked great during pregnancy (or not — one marvel of pregnancy is its fickleness), having a new baby can take a toll on that brightness for sure. Enter the refreshing Mask of Magnaminty from Lush Cosmetics. It's tingly, minty and refreshing and won't jack up her skin because it doesn't contain any harsh, abrasive junk. (Lush, $15)

Vitamins you don't have to swallow

OK, so maybe you don't personally have a huge collection of vitamin mist sprays on hand, but for a new mom, this can be a huge pick-me-up during those hazy newborn days. (Ecco Bella, $35)

Not-your-average soap

A cat-shaped phone stand, of course

Cat phone holder

Moms need extra hands, so get a phone holder that's shaped like a cat. Obviously. (Amazon, $13)

Whether it's for laundry, tiny toys or just a place to throw the mess when unexpected visitors show up, get her a basket so she can feel semi-organized. (Target, $15)

The makeup gift that keeps on giving

Makeup subscription box
Image: Birchbox

Subscription boxes are all the rage, and if the mom on your gift list is into beauty products, Birchbox might be right up her alley. Every month, she'll get five sample-size beauty items, and best of all, it's not super-expensive. Gift subscriptions start at three months for $30. This is the best tool for tackling a sleep-deprived face — other than, you know, sleeping. (Birchbox, $30 and up)

The necklace that does it all

Nursing necklace
Image: Chewbeads

When a baby is fresh out of the package, they're often all about the boob or bottle. When they get a little bigger, they start messing around with whatever they can get their hands on during feeding — which can include Mom's hair, nose, other nipple, etc. This can get super-annoying. Gift a nursing/teething necklace so baby will have something to do other than twiddle. (Chewbeads, $20)

Almost as good as a shower

Dry shampoo
Image: Sephora

No, diamonds aren't a girl's best friend — not now that dry shampoo exists. (Sephora, $22)

A scarf for any outfit

Scarf
Image: Wild Dill

What better way to hide spit-up stains than a super-cute new scarf? (Wild Dill, $18)

Can you even tell it's a health tracker?

Bellabeat
Image: Bellabeat

Health trackers are super-popular, and even if a mom isn't doing much moving because she's, you know, hooked to a baby 24/7, she might find a fancy new health tracker like this little guy from Bellabeat surprisingly helpful (and hey, it tracks sleep too, which she's totally getting a ton of, right?). The good news is that it comes with both a necklace and a wrist strap, so she'll have options if her baby winds up being a grabby little jerk. (Bellabeat, $139)

Amber Tamblyn is done with being called a liar after speaking out about her experience with sexual harassment in Hollywood.

In a new op-ed article published in the New York Times, Tamblyn stands up for herself and other women who have experienced sexism and harassment.

"For women in America who come forward with stories of harassment, abuse and sexual assault, there are not two sides to every story, however noble that principle might seem," she wrote, after recounting a time in which she tried to report harassment only to be told by a producer, "Well, there are two sides to every story."

Tamblyn added, "Women do not get to have a side. They get to have an interrogation."

The fiery NYT article comes on the heels of a tweet she wrote last week, accusing James Woods of hitting on her when she was underage.

"James Woods tried to pick me and my friend up at a restaurant once," Tamblyn wrote. "He wanted to take us to Vegas. 'I'm 16' I said. 'Even better' he said."

Tamblyn felt compelled to speak after Woods publicly criticized the upcoming movie Call Me by Your Name, which tells the story of a 24-year-old professor who falls in love with his 17-year-old male student.

She also called out Woods after he criticized the film, writing on Twitter, "Didn't you date a 19 year old when you were 60.......?"

Woods responded to Tamblyn's tweet by saying, "The first is illegal. The second is a lie."

"I have been afraid of speaking out or asking things of men in positions of power for years. What I have experienced as an actress working in a business whose business is to objectify women is frightening," Tamblyn wrote in her op-ed. "It is the deep end of a pool where I cannot swim. It is a famous man telling you that you are a liar for what you have remembered. For what you must have misremembered, unless you have proof."

She ended her piece by encouraging other women to be vocal about their harassment experiences.

Being Pressured Into Shaving My Body Hair Impacted My Self-Confidence

$

0

Dry shaving — the sound of it makes my roommate cringe because she’s afraid I’ll give myself razor burn. But if I want to wear a sleeveless dress and I notice that my underarms are looking a little prickly, I dry-shave anyway, regardless of potential consequences.

I have been conditioned to feel like I can’t leave the house in a tank top with unshaven underarms. There are times when I’ve caught myself with one foot out the door on my way to work or to meet friends when suddenly I’m hit with the realization that I hadn’t shaved the night before. What comes next is a scene straight out of a movie: The lightbulb of realization fades as I dart back upstairs to take care of the issue, wetting my armpits with a damp cloth and a little shaving cream so that I can quickly remove the “excess” hair.

More: Girls star Zosia Mamet reveals how her mother influenced her body image

If I’m certain my underarms won’t be seen by anyone, I’m fine going a few days without shaving, especially in the winter. But after years of wearing little more than leotards and tights to dance classes, I’m still very aware how much body hair is on display at all times, no matter the time of year.

I find myself wanting to blame my “need to shave” mentality on that little boy who sat next to me in my sixth-grade English class who asked when I was finally going to shave my “hairy legs,” all the while smirking and looking to the other boys sitting nearby for their approval of his weak insult. I sighed and turned my back to him, acting like his comment didn’t affect me. But on the inside, I felt vulnerable and self-conscious, wondering how many other people had looked at my legs and wondered why I hadn’t started shaving yet. That night, I discreetly snuck the pink razor from my mom’s medicine cabinet into the shower with me and decided to try shaving my legs for the first time.

I was scared. None of my friends at the time ever talked about their own experiences with shaving. The only “firsthand” accounts of shaving I had been exposed to were from the beauty advice sections of teen magazines, where girls anonymously sent in their shaving horror stories and asked “shaving experts” to tell them what they were doing wrong. There was nothing personal about these stories of girls slicing open their knees and ruining their bath towels with their bloody ankles.

No one warned you that your anxiety about dragging razor blades across your skin to remove hair might cause your hands to be shaky, resulting in you cutting up your legs. The “shaving experts” didn’t offer any advice on how much pressure to apply when shaving or to check your razor frequently for dull blades. The best advice they could offer was essentially to “just lather up and go for it.”

After I got over my initial preteen fear of shaving, I became slightly obsessed with getting rid of all the “extra hair” on my body. I closely examined my face in the mirror a few times a week to make sure that the barely visible peach fuzz above my lip didn’t grow into a mustache. Any little hairs that tried to grow below my eyebrow were plucked immediately. I got extremely self-conscious if I went longer than two days without shaving my armpits or my legs, afraid that someone might notice the stubble.

More: What my daughter's favorite body part taught me about self-love

As much as I would like to trace this whole saga all the way back to that one comment some little boy made about my legs in sixth grade, I know that the roots of my insecurities with body hair reach far beyond him. All the TV commercials and advertisements trying to convince women to buy an array of hair-removal products, all of the airbrushed images of cover girls on magazines who never have a single stray hair or any semblance of stubble anywhere on their body — these are just a couple of ways in which the media perpetuates this idea that a hairless woman is a beautiful woman. As a society, we shun women with body hair, acting as though they are dirty and unclean. We hand young girls razors and teach them how to “take care of a problem” instead of presenting shaving, plucking and waxing as part of a personal decision about whether an individual wants to remove any or all of her body hair.

My personal worries about body hair began to fade when I got more involved in activities throughout high school and into college. I didn’t have time to waste thinking so critically about my appearance anymore. But, it wasn’t until this past year or so when I began seeing social media posts from other women talking about the natural beauty of body hair that I truly began to understand how empowering body hair can be for some individuals.

More: Leonard Nimoy's other career empowered women to love their bodies

I’m still not comfortable with growing out my underarm or leg hair — and that’s OK. Because now when I shave, I know that I’m shaving because I choose to, not because I care what other people might think. I’ve taken back my body. It’s about time.

Raise your hand if you're still lamenting the loss of Downton Abbey! Ugh, same. It's been well over a year since the series finale aired in the United States, but we're still missing the heck out of our favorite program. Luckily, through the glory of online streaming and some really great quotes, the beloved show will live on forever.

And when we say "some really great quotes," of course we mean zinging one-liners and sage words from Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham. There's a million reasons to love Downton Abbey, but Maggie Smith's performance as the Dowager Countess is honestly the greatest thing since sliced bread. Smith brought dry, caustic wit and an air of wisdom to the character that no one else could have — which is why we miss her the most.

What do you know about Sharon Stone? That she starred in Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger? That she was in one of the most talked-about and famous scenes in movie history, in Basic Instinct? That she was nominated for an Academy Award for Casino? That information may be old news, but that doesn't mean you know everything about the actor. That's why we're here, on the occasion of Basic Instinct's 30th anniversary, to explore the many sides of its star, Stone herself.

In what will probably come as no surprise, Stone definitely isn’t boring. She is a multi-faceted woman with many talents and who also isn’t afraid to speak her mind. When it comes to following one’s dreams and passions, 59-year-old Stone certainly knows how to do that.

So, why not take a moment to get to know Stone a little bit better than you already do?

1. She supposedly died once

While chatting with Closer (via Page Six) in September 2016, Stone said she experienced the afterlife after suffering from a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage in 2001. "I feel that I did die. This kind of giant vortex of light was upon me and — poof! I sort of took off into this glorious, white light." She continued, "I started to see and be met by some of my friends... people who were very, very dear to me [who had died]. I had a real journey with this that took me to places both here and beyond. But it was very fast — whoosh! Suddenly, I was back. I was back in my body."

2. She won a county fair pageant

In 1975, Stone won Miss Crawford County Fair. It's a pageant held each summer at the Crawford County Fair in Meadville, Pennsylvania. She also competed for Miss Pennsylvania but didn't win.

3. She sleeps with a stuffed animal

In November 2015, the actress confessed to Us Weekly that she sleeps with a teddy bear.

4. She once really loved The Grinder

She also admitted to Us Weekly, "The Grinder with Rob Lowe is my newest favorite TV show." Same, Sharon, but it's too bad the show has since been canceled.

5. She had both a stroke and a brain hemorrhage

Did you know that in 2001, Stone had both a stroke and a subsequent cerebral hemorrhage that, according to ABC News, lasted for nine days? In August 2015, the Oscar nominee opened up to Harper's Bazaar about the experience. "It took two years for my body just to absorb all the internal bleeding I had," she said. "It almost feels like my entire DNA changed."

6. She'd love to act with this OITNB actress

While promoting her now-canceled series Agent X with AOL Build in November 2015, Stone revealed that Taylor Schilling was one of the "up and coming stars" in Hollywood at that time who she'd love to work with. "I have to say I am pretty crazy about [Taylor Schilling] from Orange Is the New Black," Stone gushed. "She is great and I would really like to play her mother. I really would. I find her to be quite… she is very real. And she pulls you in in a very extraordinarily natural way.”

7. She's passionate about ending the gender wage gap

She, like many women, continue to fight for gender equality and equal pay. As she told Luxury London in July 2016, "Even after Basic Instinct, I never earned as much as my male colleagues. I could do what I wanted — but there was never any financial equality." She also said, "I think it all depends on whether there will be more women in key positions in the future because that's the only way to guarantee equality. I haven't seen this yet, though."

8. This is her "theme song"

Alicia Keys

Also at AOL Build in 2015, the Quick and the Dead actor said, “I absolutely am obsessed with Alicia Keys’ song 'Superwoman.' That is kind of my theme song, and when I have to go somewhere or do something that is hard for me, I put that song on."

9. She's a songwriter

In addition to acting, Stone is also a songwriter, she unveiled to The Independent in May 2014. "The first song that I had published was for Hurricane Katrina," she said. "There was an album that came out, Come Together Now, and I wrote the title track song. I had a song come out in Argentina last year about a terrific writer and poet who was murdered in his car. I also have a song out in Sweden called 'Let’s Kiss.'"

10. Hillary Clinton inspired her to do this

Hillary Clinton, who she supported in the 2016 presidential election, made Stone realize she “could be anything that I wanted to be," she said. Clinton is the reason she got her college diploma, finishing her degree online. At the May Women's Choice Awards (via People), she said, "What [Clinton] did meant so much to me, not just for me, but for my mother and my grandmother and my great-grandmother who had cleaned so many floors and scrubbed so many toilets and had been treated so shittily along the way."

11. She went to college at 15

While talking about her songwriting skills with The Independent, Stone also revealed that she was given the chance to take her writing talents to the next level at a young age. "My relationship with writing began when I was a young girl," she said. "I went to college on a writing scholarship when I was 15 years old. I have always been a person who's loved to write and have had stories published in seven or eight magazines." She was also awarded a writing scholarship at Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, where she studied creative writing and fine arts. However, she ended up leaving before graduating to pursue a career in modeling. However, Edinboro did award her an honorary degree in 2007.

10 Pictures of 'Human Barbie' Valeria Lukyanova That Prove She's a Real Girl

About five years ago, Valeria Lukyanova was getting some serious press. Her odd statements (remember when she said she was a Breatharian who seeks to exist solely off light and air?!) and other-worldy appearance went viral, and we were all oddly obsessed with the self-proclaimed "human Barbie."

Lukyanova might have faded from the scene a bit as of late, but she's definitely still around, kickin' it like a human being. Because that's what she is: A flesh-and-bone person. Her carefully curated appearance may suggest otherwise, but there are actually a ton of pics that prove that Lukyanova is a real person.

Valeria Lukyanova 2

In fact, we should probably be praising Lukyanova as an extremely gifted makeup artist instead of creeping on her like she's a total oddball. When you strip away all the doll makeup, you realize how much talent goes into putting it on.

Here are some photos of Lukyanova that show her more human side.

1. Bare face, whittled waist

In this revealing bikini pic posted in 2014, the Ukrainian boasts a bare face and a whittled waist. Without her typical doll-eye contact lenses and layers of shellac, she looks kinda normal (kinda). But what is normal, anyway?

2. Straight out of the shower

Such a fresh-faced look for her! Kinda getting JLaw vibes.

3. She's got a voice

Apparently, Lukyanova does interests outside of striving to look like a doll.

4. And is into other languages

Valeria Lukyanova 5

The girl does have substance, and can even understand and sing in other languages.

5. She has parents

Valeria Lukyanova 6

Lukyanova is very much from Earth, and didn't arrive on a spaceship from outer space. She, in fact, has parents, and the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Lukyanova posted this picture on Instagram with the caption "Mi querida Mamita," which translates to "My dear mommy."

6. She works out

Valeria Lukyanova 7

Valeria Lukyanova 7

Yes, Lukyanova's body is totally unrealistic and unobtainable for 99.9 percent of the population, but, damn, the girl has put on a ton of muscle it seems.

7. And she takes gym selfies

I mean, what human in 2017 doesn't do that?

8. Pro poser

Hitting the trails in a visor and pink tank, Lukyanova could nearly be mistaken for any 20-something woman soaking up some Vitamin D and getting her cardio on.

This sweet shot only convinces us what we've thinking all along — less is more. Lukyanova could certainly do without the crazy contacts, overdone makeup and wacky getups. We like our Barbies where they belong: in a box, on a shelf, in a toy store.

With Stephen Colbert hosting the 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, a few good political jabs were guaranteed. That, the audience expected. What no one saw coming, though, was a cameo by none other than Sean Spicer, President Donald Trump's former press secretary.

The surprising moment occurred during Colbert's opening monologue, where many a joke was made regarding the current POTUS. As Colbert commented on the Emmys' audience size, Spicer wheeled onto the state with his portable podium — a nod to Melissa McCarthy's parody of him on SNL.

"This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period, both in person and around the world," he said, poking fun at his now-infamous "alternative facts." As Spicer wheeled back off the stage, Colbert quipped, "Melissa McCarthy, everyone!"

McCarthy, who was seated in the audience, appeared to enjoy the shtick.

Politics played a large role at this year's Emmys. Shortly after Colbert's politically charged opening monologue, Kate McKinnon won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on Saturday Night Live.

McKinnon memorably portrayed Hillary Clinton this year, as well as Trump's former campaign manager and current counselor, Kellyanne Conway. In her acceptance speech, McKinnon thanked Clinton "for your grace and grit."

The man responsible for bringing President Trump to life on SNL didn't walk away from the award show empty-handed, either. Alec Baldwin took home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Saturday Night Live, which has reinvigorated its ratings this year largely with election-based skits, also won Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.

Ben Affleck & Lindsay Shookus Made a Major Date Night out of the Emmys

Ben Affleck wasn't up for any awards, but that didn't stop the actor-director from attending the 2017 Emmys. He played a supporting role at this year's star-studded event, coming as the date of his girlfriend, Lindsay Shookus, a producer at Saturday Night Live.

More: Casey Affleck Third-Wheeled His Brother's Date

Affleck and Shookus, whose relationship has gradually been going public over the last year, opted out of walking the red carpet. Rather, the pair used a side-stage VIP entrance to make their way into Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater.

According to an E! News source, Shookus entered first. After taking a deep breath, Affleck followed. He was later spotted in the VIP lounge without Shookus but holding her clutch.

Shookus may have been chatting with her fellow SNL creatives during that brief absence. The producer had plenty to discuss, considering that the series started racking up Emmys early in the night. In fact, when famed SNL producer Lorne Michaels accepted the show's Emmy for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, Shookus was standing directly behind him.

She wore a black halter gown with a thigh-high split revealing a metallic miniskirt. Her blonde hair was in an updo, showing off oversized earrings.

During Michaels' speech, Affleck sat in the audience, laughing and smiling. When he and Shookus reunited in the VIP area, they walked with arms linked and conversed with Dave Chappelle, who scored a Creative Arts Emmy win for his guest spot on SNL.

In total, SNL was nominated for an impressive 14 Emmys this year. And, judging by the pace at which the series is picking up wins, it looks like Shookus and Affleck have one epic date night in the books.

I'm Catholic, & Did IVF Anyway

$

A popular infertility shirt for sale on Etsy proclaims the mantra, "Faith, trust, and baby dust." And it's pretty spot-on — after all, whether you believe in him or capital H-i-m, one thing is universally true in the experience of infertility: You gotta have faith.

But what happens when your faith is the one thing standing between you and fulfilling your dreams of having a family? Minnesota-based mom Darcy Marsolek found out the hard way when her Catholic parish refused to baptize her son unless she confessed the "sin" of undergoing in-vitro fertilization. Marsolek didn't feel she had done anything wrong, so she approached some other Catholic churches in her area.

"Many priests told me no and were very mean about it — I even heard [the term] 'devil child,'" she recalls. "That was when they crossed the line."

More: Knowing When to Draw the Line on Fertility Treatment

Marsolek tried to reason with her own parish's priest again, but they were unable to reach a compromise. Instead, the baptism took place at a local Lutheran church, where they were welcomed with "open arms and smiling faces." She now has two sons after a collective four years of fertility treatments, and her family has decided not to return to the Catholic church.

"Anyone going through a hard time should not have to defend themselves, especially with the church," says Marsolek. "A church should have open arms, especially since it’s a baby that didn't do anything wrong. We only wished to have kids like others do naturally, but we couldn't. All in all, we were very saddened and disappointed to learn of the teachings of the Catholic Church."

Indeed, Catholicism takes a pretty strong stance against IVF. The church prohibits any type of conception that takes place outside of "marital union," which rules out the use of assisted reproductive technology. Another issue is cryopreservation of embryos, which presents numerous moral conundrums for Catholics. The church views embryos as human life, so discarding or donating "leftover" embryos is strictly forbidden. Even freezing embryos for future transfer is frowned upon since not all embryos survive the thaw.

Intrauterine insemination is more of a gray area since it allows conception to happen "naturally" inside the body (rather than in a petri dish as in IVF). In order to meet the criteria of performing the conjugal act, some Catholics have employed a workaround of using a perforated condom to collect the sperm sample.

More: Just Because Someone Has Boy-Girl Twins Doesn't Mean They're "Done"

However, the Vatican's Respect for Human Life section of its doctrine says, "Artificial insemination as a substitute for the conjugal act is prohibited by reason of the voluntarily achieved dissociation of the two meanings of the conjugal act." Translation? IUI still isn't approved since the sperm is inserted artificially, even though it was collected in accordance with the church's principles.

Most branches of Christianity are not as explicit as Catholicism with their stance, but many Christians still struggle with gaining acceptance and approval of fertility treatment. After all, only 33 percent of Americans think IVF is morally acceptable, according to a 2013 poll by Pew Research Center (46 percent believe it’s not a moral issue).

Tennessee-based mom Emily Holley is a practicing Southern Baptist who was told by a fellow congregant that "anyone who freezes embryos or does not use them is a murderer," but that didn't stop her from moving forward.

"I felt very strongly that my husband and I desired to create life, and I believe God is the ultimate giver of life," says Holley, who now has two daughters — one conceived through IVF and the other spontaneously — as well as two frozen embryos for future use. "I did not see a conflict."

Fellow Tennessee mom Alex McLean had the opposite experience. Raised a Pentecostal Christian and currently a member of a nondenominational church, McLean found her community to be largely supportive (save for a few insensitive comments). However, she felt the need to spend time in discernment based on her deep personal beliefs. "Initially, I said the farthest I was willing to go was IUI because IVF is both expensive and a [morally] gray area for me," says McLean.

After it became apparent that IVF would be necessary in order to conceive, McLean went forward with treatment, but ran into another ethical roadblock after sending her embryos for preimplantation genetic screening. Two of the embryos tested as chromosomally abnormal, and McLean made the "extremely difficult" decision to discard them.

"I tend toward believing that life [starts] at implantation rather than conception, but never really wanted to test that theory myself in decisions I made," shares McLean. "[After] the PGS results, I did a lot of research on what those abnormalities meant, and in the end, I felt that it was the right decision. But I felt a great deal of loss and a small theological crisis of beliefs about it."

Throughout the experience, McLean blogged about her journey and found solace in helping other women navigating infertility, which in turn helped her reconcile some of her own inner conflict. "Any time I post something to Facebook, I always get a message from someone who has questions about the process or who has recently gone through miscarriage or loss," she says. "It's turned into an unexpected ministry."

Marsolek has also been open about her experiences in hopes of helping others. "The priest said we could become Catholics again if we didn't advocate for IVF, but it was too late," she says. "I've told my story to many people in hopes that they too can have children."

More: Trying to Conceive? The Important Test Your Gynecologist Isn't Telling You About

Much like McLean and Marsolek, I have also felt called to share my experiences with infertility, and I'm grateful for the forum and opportunity to do so on SheKnows. But my own experience was nothing like Marsolek's. As a Catholic, I found our family's priest to be nothing but supportive and open-minded throughout the process — from when I was doing IVF to when my resulting twins got baptized. This disparity just reinforces the fact that infertility is a highly individual experience, from the many different diagnoses to the support and belief systems available for getting through them.

For Christians and Catholics struggling with whether to move forward with treatment, McLean suggests seeking clarity via online forums, in-person support groups and Bible studies. "Pray for peace and wisdom — IVF is not for everyone," says McLean. "Know your own spiritual beliefs prior to starting the process, and be careful of doing anything that would compromise this."

Kelly Avett*, a devout Christian who works at a nondenominational church and has a daughter through IVF, puts it simply: "[I believe in] a little bit of science and a whole lot of God. We did have family who accused us of 'getting ahead of God,' but my question to those who oppose was: 'If you had a brain tumor, would you want to pray about it or see a doctor?' I say both. Fertility [treatments are] there for medical assistance in what still requires God."

9 Tips for Mastering the Art of Packing Light

$
0
0

One way to de-stress on vacation? Travel as light as possible. Simply put, less baggage means less to worry about. I know; I know. It always sounds like a good idea until you actually start packing. Then we go all Mary Poppins on our suitcases. Yes, I do need five more pairs of jeans just in case I spill food on every single one. Yes, I do need six extra T-shirts and every hair product I own. "I need options," we tell ourselves. But think about it this way: The fewer options you have, the fewer decisions you have to make, the easier it is to de-stress.

Not to mention, the less stuff you bring with you on vacation, the more room you'll have to bring back things you pick up along your travels.

So here are some secrets to packing lighter.

1. It's all about the roll

I do solemnly swear that rolling your clothes instead of folding them is a huge space-saver. You'll be able to fit more into a smaller suitcase.

More: 11 reasons you should travel more this year

2. Shoes are valuable storage space

Don't let any nook or cranny go to waste. Need some jewelry to match your vacate outfits? Pack it in your shoes, trust me. Filling your shoes with clothes and other items will help keep their shape while squished into your suitcase.

3. Plan your outfits for each day you're gone

Before you pack, lay out an outfit for each day to cut down on the chance you'll pack more than you need. (Hint: You always pack more than you need. So, underestimate.) It's simple, but much more effective than just guessing and throwing a bunch of random stuff in a bag. I'll take this, and this, and this, and this —we've all been there and it never ends well.

4. Repurpose your bottoms

Maximize space by doubling up on how many days you wear your pants, skirts and other bottoms. The more outfits you can make from the least amount of clothes, the better (i.e., three shirts for one pair of jeans). It's like outfit math.

More: How to ruin your vacation with one swipe on your iPhone

5. Hit up the sample-size aisle... after you get to your destination

If you can, plan on buying mini toiletries once you get to your destination that you can also recycle when you're done. That way, you don't have to travel with bulky bottles of lotion or hairspray cans either direction.

6. Suck it up and use the hotel hair dryer

Not ideal, but think of it this way: You'll be able to do more shopping because you'll actually have room in your suitcase to bring it home with you. Not a bad deal, right?

7. Pack 20 percent fun, 80 percent basic

Now is not the time to experiment with new styles and fashion trends. Stick to simple clothes you know you like and that are versatile. You can bring one or two funkier, more vibrant shirts if you must, but it's OK to be basic for the sake of your suitcase. The simpler everything is and the more it all matches, the simpler the outfit math gets.

More: 14 travel destinations that will change the way you see the world

8. Exercise your right to do laundry

It's easy when you're staying with a friend or family member, but if you're staying at hotels or taking a cruise, call ahead and get the details on their laundry service.

9. Wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane

It's easier to pack slim ballet flats and sandals in your bag, but boots and tennis shoes take up more space. Wear the bigger shoe so you don't have to pack it. But again, aim to pack only a couple of pairs of shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits (outfit math, remember?).

Donald Glover Reveals Baby News During Emmy Speech

Atlanta's Donald Glover was all love during his historic Emmy acceptance speech last night — and gave away a pretty big secret while he was at it.

“I’m so happy... I really want to thank the Academy again, everybody in here, you guys. I love you. I want to thank my mom and my dad again, I want to thank the city of Atlanta. I want to thank FX," he said. "I want to thank Michelle, my partner; you love me even how crazy I get. I want to thank my baby, my son, for just being the joy in my life," he said of his son, Legend, who was born in 2016.

And then he dropped the new-baby bomb. "I want to thank my unborn son — we're listening to Stevie [Wonder] tonight.” Solid reveal, Donald. (And solid choice of celebratory tunes too.)

More: Donald Glover Is One of the Most Powerful Newbies in Hollywood — Here's Why

Glover — who scooped up two of the three Emmys he was nominated for last night — is the first black person to win in the category Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for his FX comedy-drama Atlanta (he also won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the same show). All in all, this was a pretty terrific night to be Donald Glover.

We're particularly excited to see the actor-director-screenwriter in the new live-action remake of The Lion King for which he'll provide the voice of Simba. Glover is also a Community alum and has made several albums as rapper Childish Gambino, but he's reportedly retiring Gambino since he has, you know, a lot of other stuff going on.

And who is his partner, Michelle? We still don't know her identity (or last name), but their first child arrived on the scene sometime last year. The couple is mighty private, so last night's baby-on-the-way news from Glover was very unexpected. Guess that's just what an Emmy win (or two) can do to you. They're better than truth serum.

Your Romantic Date Guide for Autumn

$

0

It is my immutable opinion that fall is by far the most romantic season of the year. The chill in the air — a welcome respite from the sticky heat of summer — breeds coziness, whether it's huddling up in the corner booth of a café over a hot cuppa (ahem, PSL) or nestling up for a night by the fire.

In other words, fall is the dream season when it comes to dating. It doesn't matter if you're just starting out or you've been hitched for half a century... there's an autumn date that's sure to woo you. Here are nine ideas to help you rustle up some romance.

1. Find a fair

This is a win-win-win. Braving the rides gives you a chance to hold on tight. Playing games gives them a chance to show off, and picking the perfect fair food gives you something to bond over (funnel cakes FTW!). Plus, everyone knows the Ferris wheel makes for a fantastic first kiss.

More: 6 Tips for Dating Someone With Kids

2. Go pick something

Whether you make your way to an apple orchard or a pumpkin patch, you'll find that there's something inherently special about choosing what you want together. If you visit an orchard, you can keep the unity going strong by baking an apple pie together with your pickings. Or if you come home with a pumpkin, few things are more fun than carving up his and hers (or hers and hers or his and his) jack-o'-lanterns.

3. Plan a camping trip

Even if you aren't the type who is naturally inclined to go camping, consider how much quality time with your significant other it would result in. Tent for two? Yes, please! Camping also provides stunning views for stargazing and a great jumping-off point for a hike to enjoy the fall foliage.

More: 23 Love Coupons — Because Cheesy Gifts Are the Best Gifts

4. Book a wine tasting

When you think of romantic scenes in movies, wine is in nearly all of them, right? But instead of simply sipping a Bordeaux over dinner, book an actual wine tasting at a vineyard. This date lends itself well to future celebrations too — uncork a bottle of "your" wine every anniversary.

5. Take a hayride

Yes, hayrides are fun when you're a kid. But they're infinitely more fun if you're cozied up to your sweetheart. The smell of fresh hay, the hum of a tractor, the clopping of hooves and the cacophony of nocturnal creatures serenading you in the inky night... yep, magical.

6. Have a photo shoot

We've all seen (and pinned) those adorable fall photo shoot ideas on Pinterest. So break out the burlap banners and other cute fall photo props and take your own. Bonus? If you'd planned to send out Christmas cards, you'll already have the perfect picture to send season's greetings with.

7. Attend a football game

Admittedly, I'm partial to this one because one of the first dates I took my husband on was to a local football game. Cozyin' up next to each other in the bleachers and chanting the home team's fight song gets your adrenaline pumping, triggering a flood of feel-good dopamine in your body. In other words, this is the kind of fall date that makes you feel the warm fuzzies.

More: 11 Little Things That Can Totally Transform Your Relationship

8. Reserve a ghost tour

Admittedly, this doesn't exactly sound like the most romantic thing to do together. However, spending the evening strolling spooky halls means you'll be arm in arm for the most part. And again, the body's natural response to being scared is to release endorphins, which make you feel happier in general and more attracted to your partner too.

9. #NetflixAndChill

It may be cliché, but that doesn't mean it isn't classic — curling up in front of the fire or snuggling on a sofa for a fall movie marathon is the equivalent of autumnal nirvana. They may call it Netflix and "chill," but this date is practically guaranteed to heat things up.

There's a Baby on the Way for This Walking Dead/One Tree Hill Pair

$

Yes, we know Negan on The Walking Dead is really freaking scary. But in real life, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is total dad material (more Denny from Grey's Anatomy than Negan). He and his longtime love Hilarie Burton (of One Tree Hill) have a 7-year-old son, Augustus — and after last night's unexpected reveal at the 2017 Emmy Awards, we now know for certain they have another baby on the way.

It was a big Emmy night for baby news: Atlanta's Donald Glover gave a shoutout to his unborn son during his acceptance speech and Negan — er, Morgan — strolled casually into the Emmys with a very pregnant Burton. Double whammy baby surprise awards show!

Although Burton and Morgan didn't share much about the news, Burton's former co-star Barbara Alyn Woods spilled to Us Weekly that she spoke with Morgan at the Emmys and he confirmed the pregnancy (in case Burton's belly didn't).

Burton and Morgan have been together since 2009, and although they don't spill much about their personal lives, Burton chatted a bit about her family with the Associated Press way back in 2010. “[We’re] really happy, and we're a very good team," she said. "And we got very lucky that our family is what it is." Declining to say more, she explained, "I want to protect them like a mama wolf should.” Admirable.

This "mama wolf" also posted a very sweet shot on Instagram mid-gardening with her son.

Additional weird fun fact should you find yourself playing any celebrity trivia game: Burton and Morgan are the co-owners of a candy shop in Rhinebeck, New York — along with Paul Rudd. Just a couple of guys making candy. How cliché.

8 Things That Went Through My Head the Moment I Got My ADHD Diagnosis

Hi! I’m Pauline and I have ADHD!

See how easy that is to say now that I’ve had six years to get used to the idea? That’s right, folks. I was diagnosed at 34 and realized that my brain could operate on more than one speed when I started taking medication. It. Was. Life-changing.

But if you’d asked me what I was thinking when I heard "Diagnosis: ADHD," it was a lot less "go with the flow" and a lot more total Muppet flail.

1. “Wait — what did you just say?”

My doctor smiled at me from the other side of his desk. “You have ADHD. I recognized it almost immediately. It’s not that hard for me to spot in a patient since I have the condition myself.”

My mind raced through a montage of my life. I couldn’t decide if I was relieved to have a diagnosis or if I was annoyed that the diagnosis meant I wasn’t “just quirky.”

2. "My husband is not going to believe this"

I grabbed my iPhone and texted my husband to come in from the waiting room. “You tell him when he comes in,” I said to my doctor.

“He says I have ADHD,” I blurted out the moment my husband walked into the office with our daughter. Behind me, the doctor chuckled. “OK,” I said, turning to my husband as he sat down beside me, “I told him you wouldn't believe it.”

My husband laughed. “Actually…”

3. "Let’s multitask!"

So, I was sitting there trying to listen to the biggest and most life-changing news ever, and suddenly my hands felt empty. Fidget spinners weren’t sold at gas stations yet — because they weren't invented yet — so I went with option No. 2. The moment my iPhone was in my hands and my right thumb was speed texting like a pro, the world was beautiful again.

4. "Self-regulation, people!"

My husband glared at me for having the attention span of an over-caffeinated squirrel for needing my iPhone while the doctor explained my diagnosis.

“Don’t worry,” I said to him and my doc. “I am totally listening now.”

And guess what? The doc had my back. He told us that people with ADHD focus better on one thing when their brains are doing multiple things. Doing just the one thing, like listening to a whole bunch of new information at once, could result in overstimulation. Self-regulation tools FTW! I tried not to gloat as I sat taller on my seat, no longer hiding my iPhone while the appointment continued. My husband glared at me again when I blinked prettily at him.

5. "You said you cleaned!"

“Let me guess,” the doctor said to my husband, “When you get home from work, you see your wife looking exhausted and proud of all she’s accomplished during the day, but the house looks like a hurricane hit it.”

My husband nodded carefully. “Is this a trap?”

“No,” said the doctor.

“Yes,” said the wife.

6. "BUT I DID ALL THE THINGS!"

“And,” the doctor said to me, “when he asks why you’re so tired, you get angry because you did all the laundry, put some away, vacuumed, put the dishes in the dishwasher away and filled it back up again with the dishes from dinner last night. You even squeezed in a workout, talked to your mom on the phone, caught up on family news back home and started working on a blog post after you got the frozen lasagna in the stove for dinner.”

I lifted an eyebrow. “Are you stalking me?”

He laughed again. “No, I am you.

7. "Points for trying!"

“You started all of these tasks,” the doc said, “But you didn’t finish them. The washed clothes were put in the dryer, but you forgot to turn it on because you decide to put the clothes in the dryer away first. Halfway through, you remembered you needed to vacuum, leaving the basket on the bed and all of the dresser drawers pulled out. You finished the bedroom and were about to vacuum the hallway when your daughter said she was thirsty and needed a cup. So you emptied the dishwasher, gave her a cup, put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher and forgot to turn it on. You worked out, but you can’t find the DVD case, so you put it in a Barbie movie case, which means you aren't going to find it the next time you need it. The battery on the cordless phone is dead because you set it near but not on the charging base after talking to your mom. You didn’t blog because Facebook distracted you, and dinner was not going to be lasagna because it takes an hour to cook — it’s dinner time right now, and it’s frozen rock solid in the stove you never turned on.”

BINGO.

8. The good, the bad & the ugly

The good: I realized I was relieved. This was great news! I wasn’t an unfixable mess!

The bad: Wait! How am I supposed to remember to take the pills that help me remember?

The ugly: And suddenly, my great-aunt from Mexico serving a warm cuppa joe at bedtime when she babysat 5-year-old me made just as much sense as that time I left the witch hazel in the freezer.

School's back in session, and that means it's time to help our children get ahead in any way possible —which is a lot easier said than done. But if you're looking for a way to raise money for your local school, it's all about Box Tops, baby. Yup, clipping Box Tops for Education is a super-easy way to benefit your kids' (as well as other local children's) education.

And it seems like Box Tops are more important now than ever. Every day we're hearing about how schools don't have enough money for books, computers or music classes — and don't even get us started on teacher salaries. It's easy to get discouraged, but putting your money back into the schools can actually be as easy as clipping and saving Box Tops.

Box Tops for Education was started by General Mills in California back in 1996, after the company decided they wanted to create a program to help support education and benefit America’s schools.

The program was such a huge success that it soon expanded across the nation, and by 1998, more than 30,000 schools were clipping Box Tops and earning cash to buy the things they needed, like books, computers, playground equipment and more, according to the Box Tops for Education website. Today, America’s schools have earned over $719 million, and you can find Box Tops on a ton of products you buy every day at the grocery store.

Once you've got a good amount of Box Tops, you can download a collection sheet, stick the Tops on the sheet, and send them to school with your child. Most collection sheets hold 10 to 25 Tops, and volunteer coordinators appreciate that you send your Tops to school in bundles of 50.

Download a collection sheet here.

Once you send the collection sheet to school, they will be rounded up by a volunteer coordinator who runs your local Box Top program.

Surprising News on Teens & Tattoos

$

Bummer. Teens are going to have to find another way to rebel, because the American Academy of Pediatrics just took all the fun out of tattoos and piercings.

Yep, it's that American Academy of Pediatrics — the organization that brings you doctor's office pamphlets about MMR vaccines — just weighed in on tattoos and body piercings for the first time ever, which in itself signifies that all that rebellion is becoming... well, normal. *Yawn*

The report reflects the fact that more teens than ever are getting tattoos; in fact, one Harris poll discovered that 3 in 10 Americans — nearly half of the millennial cohort and 36 percent of Gen Xers — have at least one. That's a pretty inked nation in which tattoos have become (*gasp!*) nearly mainstream.

Time Health released a short video about the growing popularity of tattoos and their consequences, saying that more "scientific scrutiny" is needed:

Time tattoo vid

Dr. Cora Breuner, head author of the American Academy of Pediatrics report, said "Tattooing is much more accepted than it was 15 to 20 years ago. In many states, teens have to be at least 18 to get a tattoo, but the regulations vary from place to place. When counseling teens, I tell them to do some research, and to think hard about why they want a tattoo, and where on their body they want it."

That's all? Just think about it, and then go for it? Pretty sweet deal, teens. You've got it easy; when we were your age, we had to sneakily get tattoos behind our parents' backs and then hide them for years, and then walk home 15 miles in the snow or whatever. Gone are the days of horrified parents and shocked Norman Rockwell-esque pediatricians. These days, when it comes to tattoos, teens are far more likely to have their doctors ask them where instead of why.

“These services have come a long way, safety-wise,” Breuner adds, “but it's best to proceed with caution.”

So definitely do your research on tattoo artists and shops (and maybe keep it on the down-low for Grandma's sake).

That said, there are risks with any tattoos or piercings. Complications can happen after you get inked: infection, inflammation of blood vessels, abnormal tissue growth. And piercings — especially if done by an untrained, less-than-sanitary mall piercer — can cause serious pain, cysts, bleeding, allergic reactions and scars according to the AAP's report.

The federal government is hands-off in regard to body modifications; rules vary by state. That said, state laws still tend to make it tricky for a teen to get a nipple piercing or a full-back Grim Reaper — with at least 38 states requiring parental consent for non-ear piercings and 45 states requiring mom or dad to sign off on any tattoo on a minor.

But there are states where a 14-year-old can procure ink with parental permission. Yikes.

More: 10 Tattoos Parents Got That Were Inspired by Their Kids

The good news if your teen is set on a tattoo is that the AAP report found that most tattooed people (86 percent) have never regretted it and 30 percent with tattoos say the body ink makes them feel sexier.

The bad news: Laser removal of tattoos can range from $49 to a whopping $300 per square inch. So there's that.

"They may not realize how expensive it is to remove a tattoo, or how a piercing on your tongue might result in a chipped tooth," said Dr. David Levine, a co-author of the AAP report.

So how to proceed if your teen is hankering for a tat? The AAP says it's not a bad idea for them to chat with a pediatrician about the importance of hygiene in any tattoo situation.

More things to consider: Meds that inhibit immune response — such as steroids or Accutane for severe acne — can mess with the healing process of a tattoo. Those teens might need to hold off on any tattoos or piercings, as should anyone without up-to-date vaccinations — especially that pesky tetanus vaccine.

If you are on board with your teen's tattoo, it's a good idea to go along for the ride to make sure the artist is using disposable gloves, new sterile needles and unused ink in a fresh container for each client. (In other words, you still get an opportunity to embarrass your adolescent if they need your consent. Seems like a fair trade.)

More food for thought: Some jobs are off-limits to those with visible tattoos. One tattoo parlor owner in California, Brian Keith Thompson of Body Electric, warns teen clients against hand, neck or finger tattoos. "I'll tell them 'no, you're 19, you should wait,'" he said. "Definitely stay away from the face. We call that the 'job stopper;' if you don't want to get employed, tattoo your face." Also if you want Grandpa's heart to stop.

And with any tattoo or piercing, keep a close eye on it and follow post-ink/post-piercing care instructions to the letter. If there's any redness or swelling or pain that won't let up, get your teen to a doctor stat.
