If you didn't already think Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman were the cutest, prepare to officially swoon over Urban's latest shout-out to his lovely wife.

In an almost too adorable Insta post, the country superstar shared a few photos of the couple along with the sentimental caption: "Happy anniversary, Babygirl! Eleven years and you still feel like my girlfriend!!! - KU"

Cue all the heart-eye emojis, because we can't even with these two. I mean, c'mon, right? They're so stinkin' precious you could practically bottle 'em up and market their romantic essence as "Love Potion No. 9."

ICYMI, the couple — who got married on June 25, 2006 in Sydney, Australia —has been giving, well, everyone everywhere a major case of the "awwww"s lately.

Remember the tender moment they shared on the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival in France?

When you're in the middle of a room filled with thousands of people and can make it feel like you're the only two around, it's definitely true love.

While the couple has run across some bumps in the road in their now more-than-a-decade-long marriage, the fact that they always stand by each other and are still entirely smitten gives the rest of us hope that happily ever after isn't just a fairytale.

In fact, in an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2013, Kidman admitted that their "meet-cute" was decidedly un-fairytale like, in that it wasn't love at first sight. At least, not for Urban — or so she thought.

"I had a crush on him, and he wasn't interested in me. It's true! He didn't call me for four months," she said.

Urban later revealed he was just as into Kidman but simply didn't let on at first. (Four months though, Keith? Make a girl sweat, why don't you?!) And, as they say, all's well that ends well. When Urban finally did reach out, the couple fell madly in love and married after only a month of dating.

Throughout their marriage, Urban has been very candid about how meeting Kidman shifted the entire course of his existence.

"I wouldn't say it was a life-changing moment, because it was more than that," he told Mirror. "It was when my life started. That's the only way I can describe it. Meeting Nic was that profound for me. Before then, I didn't really know what I was doing. Now I know exactly what I'm doing, and it all makes sense."

Go on, I know you wanna... here, I'll say it with you: Awwwwww!

Brad Pitt & Sienna Miller Spotted, Reportedly Dating

Could it be? Has Brad Pitt rebounded with Sienna Miller? If The Sun is to be believed, it would appear so.

According to the British tabloid, Pitt and Miller were spotted at Glastonbury's Worthy Farm festival over the weekend, where they were seen "holding hands and stroking each other." This affectionate behavior allegedly took place sometime in the wee hours of the morning after a night of partying.

More: Brad Pitt Paints a Very Bleak Picture in Rare Interview About His Divorce

"They seemed keen to get away from prying eyes and made a dash for the Rabbit Hole, the festival’s underground and exclusive venue, with a group of friends and were inseparable as they waited to go inside," a source told The Sun, also noting that the two "seemed really intimate."

When the venue started to close and the party was forced to end, Pitt and Miller reportedly kept it going by heading arm-in-arm back to a private Winnebago RV.

This isn't the first go-round of a rumored romance between the 53-year-old actor-slash-producer and Miller. Following a private dinner for the film The Lost City of Z — which Pitt produced and Miller starred in — Page Six picked up the story, reporting that the pair had done some "serious flirting" and were "heavily enjoying each other's company."

Of course, we all know how these things go, don't we? All it takes to set off celebrity dating rumors is one moment of the pair in question caught pictured together, and everything snowballs from there. Clearly, Pitt and Miller recently worked together on a film, which makes it unsurprising they may be seen together. Hey, perhaps they even struck up a friendship outside of filming.

And while it could be possible the pair is dating in real life, we'll have to take the speculation with a grain of salt until we're confronted with hard evidence or a statement from one of their reps.

Given that Pitt just went through a contentious and highly publicized split with Angeline Jolie last fall, it certainly wouldn't shock us if he kept a low-profile for awhile.

Having said that, though, you've gotta admit these two would make a pretty damn gorgeous couple. Amirite?

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Are Little Love Sick Puppies

Royally romantic couple alert! If you're as invested in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship as we are, you've likely been wondering along with us what the cute couple has been up to since Pippa Middleton's wedding — and now we know.

In a word? Canoodling.

More: Does Prince Harry Want to Rule as King?

It's been quiet on the Heghan (Harkle? What 'ship name are we going with here?) front as of late, with Harry and Meghan spending time apart after Pippa's nuptials. As you've likely noticed, they've largely been flying under the radar.

Until today, apparently.

According to Elle, the 32-year-old prince and his 35-year-old Suits star girlfriend are squeezing in some quality time in London this week, with Meghan in town partially for work and mainly, we'd imagine, to see her man.

Although Harry is currently in Malawi and won't actually be back in London until tomorrow, Meghan is staying at Kensington Palace, awaiting his arrival.

Perhaps their rumored secret rendezvous in Toronto earlier in the month inspired this latest visit. By all accounts, it proved to be a happy reunion for the long-distance lovebirds.

More: Meghan Markle Was Super Stealthy at Pippa Middleton's Wedding

E! News reports that multiple sources have come forward to confirm Harry did, indeed, fly out to Toronto to see Meghan on June 17. "They hadn't been together for awhile, so it was exciting for both to see each other," one source shared. "Harry had planned to fly out this time as he felt it was unfair for Meghan to always be the one flying around, and she'd just come back from the U.S."

During the trip, the low-key couple spent a lot of time relaxing at home, "cooking meals together and eating outside in the garden a lot," say the sources.

The pair also spent time with some of Meghan's close friends, who now call Harry a friend too.

"Harry loves being part of her world in Toronto. It's nice getting away from London every now and then — although they both love London, too."

Meghan obviously must, since E! News has revealed that a second insider claims the actress is close to packing everything up and moving to the U.K. to be closer to Harry. It likely won't happen right this second, though, since the couple isn't "rushing ahead at a ridiculous speed or making rash decisions."

For now, they're enjoying each other's company with frequent visits, as evidenced by Meghan's present stay  (and she and Harry's subsequent canoodling) in London.

While I'm not interested in defending Lee even a little bit because... #obviously, I also don't think Kenny handled the situation in the right way either. Why did he feel the need to keep having these "talks" with Lee? Just ignore him. Act like he doesn't exist. Because Kenny is just playing right into Lee's hand by continuing the drama. Lee is lying to get a rise out of Kenny, and it's working.

How to Talk to Your Kids About Money

$
0
0

Growing up, we rarely talked about money in our home. In fact, other than trying to scam my younger sister out of her allowance by selling her my overpriced, hand-sewn American Girl doll clothes, I can’t recall the cost of things coming up in conversation much at all. I would hear the occasional, "No, you can’t have that; it’s too expensive," from my mom when we were out shopping, but beyond that, we didn’t discuss the cold, hard numbers, a household budget, investment or how much anyone actually made each month.

More: Mom's house rules for her teen daughter are pissing off the internet

I started to learn how to budget whenever I was babysitting at 12 and then getting my first job at 14, but there was no way that prepared me for getting married and dealing with very big monthly expenses. So I struggled.

On the other hand, my husband talks about money all the time and has no problems asking his friends how much money they make (which I still find incredibly inappropriate). So we try to find a balance with our kids so they don’t go off into the world feeling overwhelmed when they have to go to the bank. To help ease our 8-year-old into much bigger money conversations, we’ve developed a few strategies that are right on target with kids' comprehension.

Encourage the questions

We’re currently getting ready to leave for summer vacation, which will undoubtedly be expensive, so we’ve been cutting back in other areas in preparation. So when my son was asking for ice cream after school, I explained that I’m getting ready to purchase our very expensive tickets to Universal Studios, so we’re cutting back on our daily expenses. He then asked how much the tickets cost, and I had that conversation with him because hiding the amount isn’t doing him any good.

Encouraging questions like these help them understand that activities and vacations don’t come without a price tag and just like he has to save up his allowance for a new skateboard, we have to save our money for things. It’s helped put things into perspective for him.

Show their investments

I feel like I’ve said to my son a thousand times that he can’t have something super-expensive at the store because it’s more important for us to put money toward his investments instead. He would huff and puff and finally stop begging. But then recently, it finally clicked that he really had no idea what I was talking about because it wasn’t money that he could see in his piggy bank. It wasn’t tangible enough for his 8-year-old mind to understand the concept of investments.

So I sat down with him recently and opened up the computer and physically showed him his account with his name on it, how much money was in there and what we’re contributing each month. He gets it now and asks to see his account grow each month as we discuss what he’ll use the money for someday. It’s given him a better understanding of the word “investment.”

More: 5 signs your kids are outgrowing you

Talk numbers, but not all of them

While I don’t share with my little guy how much money I make, I do talk numbers with him all the time. For instance, whenever we get the mail and have a bill in our mailbox, I’ll open it with him and show him what our gas or electric costs each month so that our stove works and we can turn the lights and electronics on. It helps break things down for him.

Allowance & chores are key

Obviously, my son is too young to get a job, but having a chore-and-rewards system at home has helped mimic what’s to come, but on his level of understanding. Having a set daily routine of expectations that must be met by him in order to get a certain amount of money has given him motivation to keep with it and feel really good about himself once he has enough money for something he’s been wanting.

Subdued shades of white have long established themselves as a staple in home decor, taking charge within schemes of neutrals and timeless hues. We're looking to impart the palette with a modern update by opting for shades that come with creamy undertones and stone-inspired accents. These colors work best within a bathroom that skews more toward the contemporary aesthetic, which will allow for the subtle warmth of the shades to offset the rigidness of the decor scheme.

A true blue is about as classic as it gets, especially when it comes to decorating the bathroom — this spot in Charleston is only proof. Elevate the effect of the wall paint by opting for a low-key color block featuring two similar shades of a complementary scheme. In this bathroom, black and white floor tiles focalize the finish of the paint, setting the tone for the remaining elements of the room.

Minty blue-greens are making a comeback, and we're all for embracing the trend with a smoky undertone. The off-blue qualities of this two-tone look impart this London bathroom with a timeless finish. It sets the ideal backdrop for the intricate wallpaper above, while creating a soothing element within the otherwise dimly lit space. Classic traditionalists, this one's for you.

This dual-toned space is all about channeling the Greek Cyclades. A well-thought-out distribution of the reserved palette imparts the area with a dynamic finish, which manages to effortlessly complement the soft curves and edges of the room's architecture. Afraid of going all out with the color? Take note from this space and opt for an eclectic color block on adjacent walls.

For those whose color preferences skew toward the warmer tones, here's one shade you should be seriously considering for the bathroom. 200 Little Dog Names That'll Give Your Mini-Pup Some Serious Swagger

It's no secret that the littlest canines always have the largest personalities. Call it a Napoleon complex or call it confidence, but the tiniest of dogs are usually the ones who take no crap. They walk into a room with their little chests puffed out and own it — which is precisely why small dogs are totally in need of names that are worthy of their attitudes.

Yes, it's cute to name your little puppy something appropriate like Tiny or Peewee, but how amazing would it be to call them something more substantial — like Bullet or Scrappy? That's the best part about picking a name for a mini-dog. The possibilities are endless.

Is Sonic's New Blended Burger About to Set a New Fast-Food Trend?

$

For anyone who's ever tricked their kids into eating their broccoli by topping it with cheese or concealed some chopped carrots in their meatballs, you'll probably appreciate the new first-of-its-kind burger concept being explored by one fast-food chain. Sonic is testing a new blended burger, which consists of a mix of mushrooms and beef. Perfect if you don’t intend to give up meat altogether, but know you need to cut back.

The mushroom and beef burger will have fewer calories and less fat than a traditional burger, comprised of 25 to 30 percent mushrooms and served on a brioche bun with traditional toppings such as mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. Sounds good to us — and like a smart option for those who are trying to be careful about their heart health, cholesterol levels or weight.

More: Sushi burgers are the wacky food mashup we can't wait to try

“We wanted to offer a flavorful and juicy blended mushroom burger, the first of its kind for a major [quick service restaurant] brand, that offers improved sustainability,” Scott Uehlein, vice president of product innovation and development at Sonic, told Fast Company. “Because it is still mostly beef, this burger has a broader appeal versus a completely vegetarian burger patty,” says Uehlein.

Chances are, you won’t even taste a difference, and you'll get to feel a little less guilty about your lunch choice. Let's hope other fast-food chains follow suit. What’s next? Parsnip-potato fries? We’re into it.

Pregnant Serena Williams Poses Nude, Talks Falling for Alexis Ohanian

Serena Williams is so often the absolute picture of composure — have you seen her on the tennis court? She's fierce. She's unshakable. So it's a little hard to believe that finding out she was pregnant was as terrifying for her as it would be for a lot of unsuspecting new moms.

More: 10 Things We Learned About Serena Williams at #BlogHer17

Williams, who covers the latest issue of Vanity Fair with a stunning nude pregnancy shot, explained to the magazine how she discovered her bun was in the oven in the week leading up to the Australian Open, which she won even after getting that life-altering surprise.

"[I] did a double take and my heart dropped. Like literally dropped," Williams said. She thought, "Oh my God, this can’t be — I’ve got to play a tournament. How am I going to play the Australian Open? I had planned on winning in Wimbledon this year."

Williams continued, "If you would have told me last year in October or November that I would have a baby, not be pregnant but have a baby, I would have thought you were the biggest liar in the world. This is kind of how I am right now. This is happening sooner than later, and it’s going by so fast."

The pregnancy announcement came very soon after Williams announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, whom she met in Rome. He proposed in the same place they met, and even though he hoped to orchestrate a grand surprise proposal, Williams said she knew exactly what he was up to. "I knew it was coming. These Kids Make Us Pretty Confident About the Future

While it’s great to pass along wisdom to the next generation, sometimes as adults, the most helpful thing we can do is listen.

On the final day of #BlogHer17, four seventh graders — Zaki, Reed, Elyssa and JoJo — took to the stage alongside professional volleyball player Gabrielle Reece, surfer Quincy Davis and model Charli Howard for a panel discussion called Advice to My Seventh-Grade Self.

The panel was part of SheKnows Media’s Hatch Kids series, which creates “content for grown-ups made by kids with a mission.” The goal is empowering kids to use media and technology to express themselves in productive and positive ways.

Reece opened by describing her seventh grade self — who happened to be 6 feet tall — before asking Howard how she navigated her own path in the fashion industry.

Howard recalled her experience of wanting desperately to be a model and losing weight to become a size 2 only to find after several years that it was not sustainable. That's what prompted her to write a viral Facebook post telling her agency to “Fuck off,” and now, as a stunning size 6 to 8, she works as a plus-size model.

Despite the fact that by all accounts, being a size 6 to 8 is anything but plus-size, Howard said that she has gotten “loads of abuse,” which she believes “comes from a place of jealousy.”

“It’s their problem — it’s not mine,” she added, going on to emphasize that it’s important to remember that what you see online is edited and perfected and not real.

"What I really want to do is create images I didn't see growing up and show women we're all beautiful in our own way," she said.

Reece, who in addition to her career as an athlete also had an extensive modeling career, told the Hatch Kids (and the audience) that, “if beauty is your currency, then you grow poorer each day."

She continued, "When you can start to compliment and appreciate other women's power, it eliminates the need to be competitive...You'll die by that sword.”

After introducing themselves and having the opportunity to ask specific questions of the panelists, the Hatch Kids each provided some words of wisdom to the adults in the room, starting with Zaki, who advised, “Let kids be themselves without letting us run wild."

MoreHatch Reports: The Women’s March on Washington

According to Reed, “Adults should encourage kids even if they don’t understand them,” as long as “they’re doing something that makes them happy.”

Seventh-grader Elyssa wanted adults to know they should “never shoot down dreams” but “just let them grow.” She also asked for support and discipline — “but not too much” — saying that without rules, she’d “be much less of an amazing person.”

Lastly, JoJo stressed the importance of allowing and encouraging kids to play outside. “Let kids be kids,” she advised.

Great advice, guys — we couldn't have said it better ourselves.

The Real Women Who Inspired GLOW

Did you know Netflix's new hit show GLOW was actually inspired by a real TV show from the late '80s called GLOW: Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling? Don't worry. We didn't either, and we've been questioning how we've gone our whole lives not knowing this existed.

More: Everything You Need to Know About GLOW, Because It's Going to Be Awesome

Netflix's GLOW and the real-life GLOW have very similar DNA, but names have been changed as well as the location and the events depicted in the show. For example, both TV shows have all-female casts of mostly actors who turn up to a casting call for a new kind of television show. Also in both TV shows, the women take up far-out stage names and adopt larger-than-life personas they put to good use in the ring. But of course, things like names had to be changed (for example, Marc Maron's character, clearly modeled after GLOW's real-life director Matt Cimber, is named Sam Sylva) and Netflix moved the location of their show to Los Angeles, whereas the real-life GLOW was shot in Las Vegas.

As Entertainment Tonight reported, GLOW was an unintentional success, spawning a massive fandom and legit breaking down barriers of how women could look, move, and express themselves on television. They beat the other wrestling shows in their ratings and were both kid-friendly as well as grown-up friendly. In the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling documentary, many of the women recall getting totally lost in their characters; they even had to call their fellow lady wrestlers by their stage names or risk getting fined by their managers. But they all seem to recall those days so fondly.

While the women of GLOW are older now and in careers outside of wrestling or performing, their great wrestling days are forever memorialized on television. The women, who were aspiring actors looking for their big break, ended up creating something bigger and more meaningful than they could ever imagine.

Without further ado, here are the real ladies who inspired GLOW.

Dee Booher, aka "Matilda the Hun"

In the GLOW documentary, Booher — known as Matilda the Hun in the ring back in the day — is a real firecracker; it's clear to see that even though time and aging have prevented her from continuing to wrestle, she will always have a passion for it.

Ursula Hayden, aka "Babe the Farmer's Daughter"

Babe the Farmers Daughter GLOW

Hayden made a name for herself playing the girl-next-door-type on GLOW as Babe the Farmer's Daughter. The wrestling bug must have bitten her hard because Hayden continues to run various GLOW-related projects and served as a consultant on the Netflix adaptation of the show.

Jeanne Basone & Janet Bowers, aka "Hollywood" & "Vine"

Hollywood & Vine GLOW

Typically wrestling as a duo and named after one of the most famous intersections in Los Angeles, Basone wrestled as Hollywood (pictured on the left) and Bowers wrestled as Vine (pictured on the right). After their respective runs in GLOW, Basone went on to pose for Playboy magazine (as mentioned in the GLOW documentary) and she currently works as a stuntwoman, model and actor. Bowers on the other hand appears to have quietly moved out of the limelight since GLOW.

Emily Dole, aka "Mt. Fiji"

Emily Dole Mt Fiji GLOW

The former athlete was a prominent one before her thriving career on GLOW. She went through the Olympic trials and she is a former track and field star. In the GLOW documentary, Dole is regarded warmly for her ability to be both kind and powerful. These days, she maintains a quiet and private life.

Lisa Moretti, aka "Tina Ferrari"

Tina Ferrari GLOW
Image: galaxy_of_eve/Instagram

Before graduating to the WWE and becoming well-known as the formidable wrestler Ivory, Moretti was known as Tina Ferrari. She currently makes appearances for certain GLOW and WWE events but has officially retired from wrestling.

Dawn Rice, aka "Godiva"

Godiva GLOW

Godiva, played by Dawn Rice, was a beautiful British wrestler who took down the other GLOW characters with grace and poise. Although she no longer works as a wrestler, viewers of the GLOW documentary will learn that Rice "works in ministry as a mentor and community outreach leader."

Tracy Meltzer, aka "Roxy Astor"

Meltzer, known as Roxy Astor on GLOW, currently still competes as a wrestler after making a name for herself on GLOW.

DeMario Jackson Defends Corinne Olympios in His Account of the BIP Incident

Updated June 27, 2017, 10:18 a.m. PT: Shortly after the first clips of DeMario Jackson emerged showing him telling his versions of the alleged events in the Bachelor in Paradise incident, a new set of statements has come out from that interview wherein he defends Corinne Olympios.

For Jackson, he seems perturbed by how quickly the public applied labels to both he and Olympios during the initial reports. "The minute you release this black man's face and this white girl's face," he shared, "before either of us commented on it, I was already a 'rapist.'" Jackson also commented on the despicability of Olympios being labeled a "whore" and a "slut" by those who had not heard her version of events. "They were slut-shaming her because of what she did last season with Nick [Viall]. For me, it goes back to the human race. We failed." Jackson's account of the scandal fallout makes it appear as if he is on Olympios' side in this matter, removing those harmful labels from both of their names in the process.

Original story:

After a few short weeks of frenzied reporting on who did what to whom on the set of Bachelor in Paradise, DeMario Jackson is telling his side of the story. Jackson, who was named from the very beginning as one of the people allegedly involved in this incident, sat down with E! News to exclusively detail his first meeting with Corinne Olympios on the BIP set as well as what he believes happened that led to the complete shutdown of production while Warner Bros. studios conducted an investigation.

The interview, which will take place over two nights in three installments, begins with Jackson telling E! News' Melanie Bromley what his state of mind and role going into filming was. "It was crazy from the last season with the fake girlfriend," Jackson told Bromley, referencing the incident on the current season of The Bachelorette when a young woman claiming to be Jackson's girlfriend appeared to tell Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay that Jackson was still attached to someone. "I was the villain for this, straight-up. I was nervous. I was sweating [coming onto BIP]."

Jackson then went on to tell Bromley about his first real conversation with Olympios. He made it clear that the two appeared to bond because they have been painted as "villains" on their respective seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette; this gave Jackson the impression they could be friends.

"Our first real conversation was at the bar. We were hanging out. We kind of were just complimenting each other on being villains. I was like, 'Look, I've accepted this role.' We were kind of just laughing, like, 'Oh, we're about to dominate Paradise!' Like homie stuff, like really, really like friends. And then, you know, we started having a little bit more fun... and had a few drinks," he detailed.

More: Corinne Olympios' Boyfriend Gives His Full Support During the BIP Fallout

Jackson continued to detail that he and Olympios took some shots — here is where Olympios' own account can be somewhat confirmed, as she claims her drinking led to blacking out — before heading to a more secluded area. In his mind, Jackson wanted to make sure there were cameras around because he believed his race might have something to do with how his actions would be perceived with Olympios in this situation.

"It's crazy because when you're a man — mostly African-American man — no matter where you're at, you always look for things that can help you out. And at that moment, I made sure the cameras followed us. It just seemed too perfect in a sense for me, and at the point, that's when my Spidey senses got up," Jackson stated, before going on to claim that Olympios made the first move.

DeMario Jackson E! News Interview Pt. 2

DeMario Jackson E! News Interview Pt. 2

Jackson's claims also involve statements that Olympios pushed for oral sex and that she was the one who was the aggressor, but that he wanted to go along with it (he speaks about it in the video clip above).

"[We were] kissing, rubbing, touching. It's nothing too sexual yet. Things got wild because it was more her being the aggressor, which was sexy... When you have a very attractive girl telling you what she wants, it's like a very, like, 'Wow, OK! This is hot. This is very... I like it.' [...] I get out of the pool, and I have my legs in the pool, and I'm just hanging out. This is when she gets up out of the pool and puts her lady parts right on my face," he told Bromley.

While it's easy to push blame onto one another during a tense incident like this, until statements of true fact can be made, it's hard to tell whose side you should come down on. After Warner Bros. completed an independent investigation into the incident and found no evidence of misconduct, Olympios' legal team stated they were going to conduct their own investigation in an attempt to exonerate Olympios. Hopefully, if the investigation does go through, Jackson may be exonerated of any claims he violated consent too.

It’s fair to say being the president is a demanding job. You have all sorts of important business to conduct, meetings with foreign leaders, executive orders to pass. So it makes sense that you'd need some downtime every now and then, whether on the golf course or while traveling on board Air Force One.

What does Donald Trump like to watch when he just needs a little soothing, guilty-pleasure TV? According to one White House reporter, that very well might be HGTV's Property Brothers.

While of course we can't confirm that Trump himself is the one who's got a soft spot for HGTV (it could be Melania Trump or another staffer on board the plane) an interest in a show about real estate would make total sense. Still, who knew he had an interest in fixer-uppers?

Why I Feel More Sexual in My 40s

$

After my 41st birthday, I began to notice a change in myself. I had more energy and felt lighter and happier, but something else was brewing. My libido was suddenly awake again. While I have always enjoyed sex, intimacy and being a bit naughty, I realized that part of me mellowed out a bit in my early to mid-30s.

Maybe it was having three kids in three years that stalled my libido, and my body was telling me to shut it down and take care of the clan I had. Perhaps it knew I could be an average mom to three, but if there was one more thrown into the mix, it wouldn't be the best thing for my body or my mind.

More: More Women Than You Think Struggle With Low Libido

After asking a few of my 40-year-old friends if they felt this way, I almost got attacked they were so excited. I was met with, "Oh my God, yes!" and "Things are getting really hot now."

A common thread with all of us is we have kids in the tween or teen stage; our children certainly are more independent, which leaves us with more energy.

Women who have children who are a bit older also aren't being touched or pulled on all day. They are able to spend more time on self-care, which makes them happier.

These things make sense of course, but I couldn't help but wonder if something else is going on in women's bodies with our hormones at this age.

Tiffany Alyse Yelverton, a sexologist and founder of Sexy Survivors, an organization that helps reintroduce sex and intimacy back into the lives of those experiencing life-changing events like cancer, tells SheKnows that hormones definitely play a major role.

More20 Sexy Pairs of Undies That Keep Your Lady Parts Healthy

"As perimenopause begins, our hormone levels dip and spike at different times. Estrogen begins to drop, and if testosterone is steady, then it is as if testosterone gets a boost,” Yelverton says. “Also, during the 40s, there are times where the body is producing top levels of progesterone and testosterone to give one more push for procreating."

Along the same lines, Dr. John Robinson and Dr. Cristina Bosch of The Hormone Zone tell SheKnows that at this age, our hormone levels — especially testosterone, the main libido hormone — can decrease, but that is not what always dictates a woman's sexual desire.

"As women approach their 40s, they may experience a sense of liberation towards themselves and their partner, heightening their sexual libido and response,” they explain. “As women age, they begin to look at sex as a way towards their own personal liberation and self-expression — as it should be. But again, this is not always the case, and we tend to deal with many women who have difficulty in the idea of taking care of themselves and opening up to their own sense of personal sexuality."

So while hormones do play a role in our sexual appetite, it is not the only thing to take into consideration. Everyone is different and Robinson and Bosch say that if you are someone who has always had a high libido most of your life, your hormone levels may not affect you at all.

However, if they do and you find yourself sitting with your gynecologist and wondering if you will ever feel sexual again, Robinson and Bosch say that hormone replacement therapy, when done in a comprehensive and optimal fashion, “can literally change a woman’s life, enhancing her sexuality, sense of self and her connection to her loved ones and partner."

But not everyone agrees about the role of hormones in increases in women’s sex drives in their 40s.

“Some women do experience an increased libido in their 40s, but typically none of this can be related to a hormonal change of anything going on in the body, as there are no studies linked to this,” Dr. Jane L. Frederick, a reproductive endocrinologist at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, tells SheKnows.

Instead, she suggests that it could be a social change.

More: 5 Facts About Your Libido That Will Help Improve Your Sex Life

“As a woman ages, she may become more comfortable with sexuality, or in some cases if she has not conceived a child, there may be an increased desire to procreate, thus creating an increase in her sex drive,” Frederick adds.

She has a point. Years of experience and feeling comfortable in our skin as well as our partners having a vasectomy or some other more freeing form of birth control is going to make us in the mood for more intimacy too. We are able to be more spontaneous, and that can be very exciting. We also find ourselves with a little more time and freedom — especially if our kids aren't crawling into bed with us every night or needing so much from us during the day.

Regardless of the cause, having a fulfilling sex life can be just one of the many things to look forward to as you get older.

The Sopranos Might Make a TV Comeback

Hi, everyone. It's 2017 and the old TV shows are the hottest thing right now. They're getting revived left and right: Girl Meets World, Fuller House, Raven at Home, etc., etc.

More: The Newest Game of Thrones Season 7 Trailer Is Here, & It's Bloody Good

Most of the shows that are getting all these modern revivals are nostalgic, but not objectively great TV. They're fine, and the revival series are popular because people want to rediscover their memories of that old TV they watched when they were younger. But they're just not the epitome of storytelling or anything like that, you know?

Until now (maybe). Rumor has it that one of the greatest TV shows of all time (and if you think otherwise, fight me) is getting a revival of sorts. The Sopranos is reportedly being eyed for a prequel series, and this is the kind of revival I can truly get behind.

More: Evan Rachel Wood Teased Westworld Season 2 Because She Hates Us

It's not a true revival, and that's OK for a lot of reasons. The cast of The Sopranos has aged significantly, and the way that story was resolved (or not depending on who you ask) was pretty damn-near perfect, not to be giving away any spoilers or anything. A prequel, though, is the perfect way to revisit The Sopranos. It could have a whole new cast and storylines that tell a more thorough backstory of the famous family. Are you imagining the possibilities yet? Because they are good.

Also, just tell me you don't want to watch a show about organized crime in the '70s and '80s. It would be like Mad Men meets The Departed, and you know you're into that.

HBO hasn't confirmed anything here, but series creator David Chase is all about it — he told Entertainment Weekly he's not only willing, but ready to revisit the Sopranos universe.

Kids Who Do Chores Are More Likely to Be Successful Adults, Research Proves

By Chiara U. Mesiona

When my siblings and I were kids, my mother constantly used a phrase that would make the hairs on the back of our necks stand on end: division of labor. It simply meant “time to do your assigned daily chores,” but to a 6-year-old child, labor was labor. Chores were chores.

Each time, my sisters and I would drag our heels, whiningly asking why we needed to do work around the house. Our mother would respond, “Trust me, you’ll understand when you get older.”

Now, more than 20 years down the line, research proves that my mother was right.

What is the importance of doing chores for kids?

Making your kids do chores has benefits that go well into their adulthood.

A 20-year study by the University of Minnesota found that doing chores at an early age — as early as 3 years old, in fact — is the best predictor for growing up into a young adult with a completed education, a career with a clear direction and healthy personal relationships with family and friends.

A Harvard Grant Study, which started in 1938 and is still ongoing, also investigates the factors that enable children to grow into happy and successful adults. So far, the study identifies positive relationships and a good work ethic as keys to being a stable adult.

Having a good work ethic and thinking like a team player are linked to doing chores as a child. Indeed, making kids work in the household is identified as one of the things that parents of successful people have in common.

Chores teach responsibility

Being responsible means recognizing the need to get certain things done even when they are unpleasant. Daily and regular chores instill the mentality of, There’s work that needs doing. I will do it because, while it’s unpleasant, it’s also necessary.” This type of mindset shapes a child’s work ethic and sense of competence. Kids learn that they don’t have to be best at everything or awarded for every single effort; they just need to get things done!

Parents who like to make decisions and do unpleasant yet necessary work on their children’s behalf need to be careful. In her TED Talk, Julie Lythcott-Haims, Author of “How to Raise an Adult,” discussed how being a helicopter parent can endanger a child’s development. Doing chores for kids could turn them into co-dependent adults.

“We send our children the message: ‘Hey, kid, I don’t think you can actually achieve any of this without me.’ With our over-help, overprotection and over-handholding, we deprive our kids of the chance to build self-efficacy, which is a fundamental tenant of the human psyche,” she said, explaining how unconditional love and chores shape a child’s budding sense of self-efficacy.

Chores teach kids to contribute

Kids develop an instinct to look around in their environment and figure out how they can assist, à la “How can I contribute? What problems might come up and how can I address them?”

When they do household work, kids start to view the home as one system wherein everyone has a role to play and failing to do one’s part can affect other areas of the system.

More important, when children don’t do chores, then someone else must be doing it for them — which might convince them that housework isn't and will never be relevant to them. In an interview with Tech Insider, Lythcott-Haims pointed out that chores could implant the right kind of mentality where children can say to themselves, “I have to do the work of life in order to be part of life.”

Chores teach time-management & self-control

Managing priorities can teach kids to recognize struggle and power through it even if it gets unpleasant. Kids understand early on the feeling of working hard and accomplishing something despite receiving no accolades for it.

Chores can teach kids to discern their priorities, put first things first and ensure that important tasks get done on time. In other words, kids develop self-control, time-management and an understanding that their actions lead to outcomes.

Indeed, developing self-control early in life helps kids to grow up as well-functioning adults who exercise discipline with their time, money and resources and are able to thrive in any environment.

The reality: Fewer kids do chores today

Despite the benefits of doing chores, only a fraction of parents today assign household work to kids. A Braun Research study found that out of 1,001 parents, 82 percent grew up doing chores at home, but only 28 percent assign regular chores to their kids.

Why? It’s certainly not for a lack of chores that need doing at home.

Many parents may be focused on more elaborate types of achievements. “Maybe we’re afraid our kids won’t have a future we can brag about to our friends and with stickers on the back of our cars,” says Lythcott-Haims during her TED Talk. So some parents might not want to add more activities to their kid’s plate, hoping they’ll focus on “more important things” instead.

However, chores can be as simple as clearing the table after dinner or taking the clothes out of the dryer. As kids get older, they can progress to more complex chores, like buying groceries or monitoring house expenses. What is more important is that chores are done on a regular basis. Assigning regular housework means you are setting your child up for success later in life.
