Survivor's Sierra Dawn-Thomas on Betraying Brad & Being Betrayed by Sarah

Sierra who? That was the reaction from many viewers when the cast of Survivor: Game Changers was announced. Hell, even some of her fellow Season 34 castaways didn't recognize her despite having previously finished in 5th place on Survivor: Worlds Apart. If she was so forgettable, why was she possibly picked to compete on a season known as Game Changers? Even she doubted herself, but it was also what motivated her to make stronger moves this time around. In our one-on-one interview with Sierra, she was openly frustrated with that strategic fumble by telling Sarah about her special legacy advantage.

SheKnows: Was your elimination a true blindside or did you have an idea it was coming?

Sierra Dawn-Thomas: I had a feeling. A couple people hadn't talked to me all day. When you don't get talked to on Survivor, you understand that you're getting talked about. I was scared, but I legitimately thought the case I was pleading about Andrea had some merit to it. She's a huge threat; she's doing great in challenges, and I was hoping people would see that.

SK: Before going to Tribal Council, you secretly told Sarah about your legacy advantage. Then you revealed you would give it to her should you be voted off. Were you concerned that maybe she would see value in eliminating you to earn possession of the advantage?

SDT: What was I thinking? You would think that the normal, average person would think that. Here's the deal. I was sitting with Sarah for about an hour before we even started talking about the advantage. We were crying; it was emotional. I was vulnerable, and I had no intention from the moment I found that secret advantage to tell anybody the entire time. I don't know what came over me. When I watched it, I saw the confusion and fear in my eyes as I started speaking and telling her. I don't know why I did it. If I was gonna tell her anything, I should've made up a lie.

SK: Looking back, what lie would you tell her?

SDT: I would've kept my mouth shut, but if I was going to say anything, I could have said, "I found a secret advantage. It's an Idol that I can play for two people. I will play it for me and you." I did have a connection with her. You don't see it much, but we were really close. It's frustrating. I can barely talk about it I'm so frustrated with myself.

SK: Why give it to Sarah instead of somebody else in your alliance? You were very close with Brad, so why not give it to him?

SDT: I was very close to Brad. As silly as it is, it all came down to that final moment when I was sitting there and Jeff Probst told me I was voted off. I looked at Brad and he gave me nothing. He showed no emotion, no shock, nothing. I looked at Sarah, and she was about to cry. For that moment, that's what I was going off of. I thought Brad voted for me. I forgot the whole game I was super-close to him. I went off that moment, which I obviously shouldn't have because Sarah did vote for me.

SK: Why did the tribe target you when there are other serious threats, like Cirie, left in the competition?

SDT: Cirie is playing a great game. She's not being the one in charge. I came in saying, "I feel like I don't deserve to be here on Game Changers. I'm gonna have to make some big moves." I came in guns blazing from day one, and that was my mistake. I put a target on my back. I was telling people what to do. I was being super-strategic and open about it. Everyone saw that and realized I was playing really hard. It took the target off other people who were sitting back riding coattails for the most part.

SK: Was that your strategy all along, or did you play that way to live up to the season's title of Game Changers?

SDT: Before I went, I had a lot of ridicule from people. I questioned myself if I deserved to play again before even knowing the theme. At that moment I said, "OK, Sierra. You can go into this thinking you don't deserve to be here, or you can prove to everybody and yourself why you deserve to play again." Even before knowing the theme of this season — which did light a fire under my butt — but for that moment, I just wanted to play hard and do more than I did the first time.

SK: Was there any strategic move you're proud of that didn't air on TV?

SDT: Yeah! I feel like a lot of people can back me up on this, but I was the sole purpose why Malcolm went home aside from the Idol being played. It was his name I had to sit around camp and argue for 20 minutes with Brad and Tai about why we should vote for him. Also with Caleb. They wanted to go Hali, but I fought to get rid of him. There's a lot of things I did strategically that I was the main person behind.

SK: So would you label yourself as a game changer now?

SDT: I wouldn't take it that far [laughs]. I feel like I did really well, and I am proud of myself, but I can't confidently say I'm a game changer. I made a really big mistake. I'm still pretty upset about what I did [telling Sarah about the advantage]. It has outweighed all the good things I did. It's a little raw, but maybe in the long run I can look back and say I was a game changer.

SK: Was there anybody on the cast who you didn't believe was a game changer?

SDT: No. That cast was insane. I look at all of the names, even when I got there and saw all of their faces, I was privileged to be in the presence of these people.

SK: Who did you want to go to the final three with?

SDT: It was me, Brad and Troyzan or me, Brad and Sarah. In the game, I feel like I could've beaten them.

SK: How did you end up on the show this season? Walk us through what happened when CBS called.

SDT: Goodness gracious, it's kind of a crazy story. I got the call in January. I went through the whole process of getting ready. Then, I got a call in May and they were like, "We're actually not gonna use you." So I went on living my life. I rodeo and I was on the road living in my horse trailer. Then I get a phone call on a Friday that they were actually going to use me. I was getting ready to compete in the rodeo when I answered my phone and they said, "Hey, you're actually leaving on Saturday." I had less than 48 hours to get home from a rodeo and get my life in order. I wish I was a little bit fatter going into the game. I would've eaten more and put more weight on before leaving.

SK: There's a lot of talk that you were a last-minute alternate for Season 29 winner Natalie Anderson. Is that true?

SDT: It's never been confirmed, but I'm pretty sure that's what it was.

SK: Would you play again?

SDT: The second time was really hard on me, but I would love to see how far I can change and grow. What would my third season be like? I would love to yet again surprise myself and everybody else with what I could possibly do.

Skittles' New Mother's Day Ad Is Horrifying

Skittles' ads have always freaked me out. Who knew you could take the phrase "taste the rainbow" and turn it into the start of so many nightmares? But they've really, really gone too far this time, with a new Mother's Day ad that makes me want to step away from the internet forever.

It's a play on clingy mother-son relationships, specifically the kinds of sons who are so attached to their mom that they never leave her side — and in this ad, don't even cut the umbilical cord. I might vom just trying to write about this, but stay with me.

In the clip, a mom (Mac's mom from It's Always Sunny!) is sitting on a couch enjoying a bag of Skittles. Her adult son sits next to her... attached by a thick umbilical cord.

Every time the mom eats a Skittle, the son can taste it thanks to their, um, special connection. Writing about this is killing me — can we all agree that if you're trying to sell FOOD, adult umbilical attachments should not be the focus of your ad?

I mean, sure, this ad has everyone talking (and laughing and gagging). But now I'm not just questioning my fondness for Skittles, I'm questioning parenthood itself. Because if that's what motherhood has in store for me, I'd just as soon remain childless (and Skittle-free) forever, thank you very much.

Kylie Jenner Releases First Trailer for New Docu-Series & Uh, Ya...

OK, E! is doing its best to save a sinking ship. The ratings for Keeping Up With the Kardashians have been tanking, so the network working hard to market the most popular Jenner in the family, Kylie.

Her new show, Life of Kylie, is coming our way July 6, whether we like it or not. On Thursday, Jenner teased her new show and revealed that she’s a woman of mystery. If you think you know her, think again.

Seriously, what do we really need to know about the reality star that will enrich our lives? Her successful lip kit line is about as deep as I go. It also looks to be about as deep as her show is going to go, too.

In the promo, she says, “When you grow up on camera, everybody feels like they know you. But they don't."

I think most rational people understand that. Jenner’s life has been chronicled by the tabloids and the paparazzi, but I don’t pretend to know what she eats for breakfast. Could that be the big secret she will share in her new show?

“Nobody has a perfect life,” she continues. “Now I can find what’s really going to make me happy.”

See, here’s where she starts to really lose me. If I knew Jenner was on a deep soul-searching mission, I would buy it. But I know the show is going to give me scenes of her traveling, eating out at fancy restaurants and picking her next lip kit color. It’s going to be the Millenial version of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

"There's an image that I have to keep up with,” she concludes. “And then there’s me, Kylie.”

While I am sure she’s less guarded around her family and friends. I don’t get the sense that this spin-off is really going to teach me anything new. Do I even need to watch? Maybe just one episode.

Jennifer Morrison's Leaving OUAT, So What's Next for the Show?

If you haven't heard yet, Jennifer Morrison is leaving Once Upon a Time after Season 6. The actress who brings Emma Swan to life on the ABC series made the surprising announcement on Instagram on Monday, after that big musical episode aired on the night before.

More: Why August's OUAT Return Is the Best Thing to Happen to Season 6

Alongside a photo of herself, she wrote, "As I reached the end of my 6 year contract on Once Upon A Time, I was faced with a significant decision. ABC, Eddy Kitsis, and Adam Horowitz very generously invited me to continue as a series regular. After very careful consideration, I have decided that creatively and personally, it is time for me to move on."

The 38-year-old said that if OUAT scores a Season 7 renewal, she will "appear in one episode." She even took the time to praise Emma. As Morrison wrote, "Emma Swan is one my favorite characters that I have ever played. My 6 years on Once Upon A Time has changed my life in the most beautiful ways. I am absolutely blown away by the passion and commitment of the Oncer fans. I am so honored to have been a central part of such a special show."

Jennifer Morrison

Jennifer Morrison

There's no doubt Emma is one character that will forever inspire women everywhere. Between her being a strong, independent, fiery, badass savior, Emma's vulnerabilities showed what a complete, complex and real woman looks like. She will definitely be missed.

More: Robin Hood’s OUAT Return Is Actually Doing More Harm Than Good

That said, what's going to come of OUAT with Morrison's departure? It's hard to imagine the show without her. Emma has been the sole focus of the drama since day one, so where can the series go from here?

There are a few options, and here's what we're thinking could very well happen once Season 6 comes to a close.

1. A total reset

Emma Swan
Image: Giphy

For some time now, creators Horowitz and Kitsis have teased some type of "reset" if OUAT returns for another season. Well, with Morrison no longer appearing as Emma, we would imagine the reset button would have to be hit. This could mean starting over with some new characters and story lines at the forefront. Or, making another beloved character the focus of the season (ahem...Regina, but more on her in a bit).

Whatever happens, Kitsis told TVLine in April that fans shouldn't worry about what's to come. “Any changes that we have to accommodate have been accommodated," he teased. "We planned this finale from the beginning of the year, so whoever stays and whoever goes…all those questions have already been dealt with. The audience does not have to fear [anything feeling] incomplete."

2. A future Henry

Andrew J. West

Andrew J. West

In March, TVLine reported that Andrew J. West was cast on OUAT in a mysterious role. No details were given, but it was revealed that his character could become a series regular if the show gets renewed. TVLine also speculated that there's a chance West could playing a "strong yet vulnerable" leading man in his late 20s to mid-30s, which OUAT was said to be casting for the end of Season 6. The male character is also described as "a gent who was once optimistic and hopeful but now is a friendless, cynical recluse. That said, he still possesses a dormant, deep-seated spark of hope that waits for the right person to reignite it."

Anyone else think that he could possibly be playing the older version of Henry? West is said to come on during the Season 6 finale, so we should know soon enough who his character is. If OUAT decided to shift the show to the future, this would be definitely classify as a "reset."

Henry is the reason Emma came to Storybrooke in the first place and made the series what is today, so what better way to transform the story than by making him the center of the show once again?

3. Emma dies

Captain Swan
Image: Giphy

We know you're thinking it, so we're just going to say it. There's a high chance Emma could end up dying. We hate to even utter those words, but death is a possibility. That's how many TV characters get written out of a show. Plus, Emma has that epic "final battle" with The Black Fairy ahead of her, so maybe as the savior she'll need to die/sacrifice herself in order to save those she loves.

If this does happen, we surely won't be happy to see not only Emma die, but also the end of Captain Swan. They just got married, so the show really wouldn't do this to them, right? You better keep those fingers crossed.

4. Emma and Henry 2.0

Emma and Henry
Image: Giphy

In addition to West's unknown role, Jane the Virgin's Alison Fernandez is coming onto OUAT during the Season 6 finale, with the option of more episodes if a renewal is granted. However, we don't know anything about her character, except that she'll play a 10-year-old "with a constant twinkle of mischief in her eye," per TVGuide.com. She's also said to come from a broken home and will come in contact with some form of darkness that "threatens everything she holds dear."

So, if West is playing an older version of Henry, what if Fernandez's character has a connection to Henry and/or comes in contact with him somehow? This could mean West and Fernandez could be the next Henry and Emma. Of course, you can't replace the originals, but it may be an interesting shift.

5. Regina gets more of a spotlight

Regina Mills
Image: Giphy

Obviously, Regina is a huge part of OUAT, but maybe once Emma departs she'll become even bigger of a character. Who can argue that another woman leading the series would be amazing? It would be nice to see Regina shine even more than she already does — and to finally get her happy ending. Seriously, when is Regina going to get her happy ending?

6. The series ends

Dark Swan
Image: Giphy

Again, OUAT has yet to be renewed, so with Emma's exit could come the end of the show. Let's face it, this seems like the only option. How can there be an OUAT without Emma Swan? Plus, we have to admit Season 6 hasn't been the greatest, so maybe it's best for it to end once and for all.

There's no denying that OUAT is in for some major changes. No matter what, at least we had six seasons of Emma Swan. Yeah, she's going to be truly missed.

Steve Harvey Tries to Cry His Way Out of Staffing Memo Scandal

Steve Harvey didn’t make any friends at the start of Season 5 of his daytime talk show. In fact, he’s pretty darn lucky this memo didn’t leak earlier.

More: Man Calls His Pregnant Wife Fat on Family Feud (May He Rest In Peace)

Roger Feder’s Chicago media blog leaked the memo with a not-so-fond farewell to Harvey, who taped his last episode of The Steve Harvey Show after five years in the Windy City. The email dictated such orders like, “Do not open my dressing room door. IF YOU OPEN MY DOOR, EXPECT TO BE REMOVED.”

While it’s important to set personal boundaries if you are feeling overwhelmed at work or in a relationship, there is such a thing as treating others with respect and delivering the message with kindness. Harvey did none of that.

According to RadarOnline.com, he called a staff meeting to smooth over everyone’s ruffled feathers, but he got very little sympathy.

More: Bow Wow Has a Scientific Method to His Madness

“He didn’t really apologize, but you could tell his ego is bruised.” said RadarOnline’s source. “He actually started crying at one point, but to some it seemed like just more show business from Harvey. It seemed so fake, like he literally looked into the lights to get himself crying.”

Ouch! There’s no love lost between his Chicago staff, especially since most are losing their jobs while he moves the show to LA beginning in the fall.

“People were just standing there with their arms crossed,” said the insider.

Harvey knew he had to do a little PR control as well. He talked to Entertainment Tonight about the debacle.

More: Scandal and 54 Other Shows That've Been Canceled This Year

"I just didn't want to be in this prison anymore where I had to be in this little room, scared to go out and take a breath of fresh air without somebody approaching me, so I wrote the letter," he said to ET. "I don't apologize about the letter, but it's kind of crazy what people who took this thing and ran, man. I appreciate you asking me."

If Harvey has no one to apologize to, then why all of the tears? No wonder his staff didn’t buy his half-hearted attempt at making peace. If my boss did the same thing? Nope.

AJ McLean Hopes His Daughters are Gay But There Are Problems with His Logic

A.J. McLean is just saying what’s on the mind of every dad of daughters. In an interview with Refinery 29 the Backstreet Boy was asked how he and his wife Rochelle came up with the names for their girls; Ava James, 4, and Lyric Dean, two months. After going through the baby name song-and-dance McLean added, “I will also go on record by saying, and I told my wife this, I hope that both of my daughters are gay because that takes all penis out of my life — I do not want to deal with boys ever.”

Let's be honest, shouldn't A.J. really be worrying about how he's going to explain his appearance on Nick Viall's season of The Bachelor to his girls?

Backstreet Boys appearance on The Bachelor
Image: Wenn

We can’t come down too hard on McLean. He’s in the throes of the new baby sleep schedule and he’s a consummate jokester in interviews, I seriously doubt he meant to gloss over sexism. But his naiveté is almost adorable. Removing men from his daughter’s beds may solve a few things for him but it doesn’t do a lick of good for them. Here's what women who are lesbians still deal with even though they don't have intimate relationships with men.

More: Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean Heads Back to Rehab

Sexism

Even if McLean’s daughters grow up to be nuns they’ll still face prejudice. Maybe a teensy bit less if they actually live in a convent. Or on the side of a Swiss mountaintop as subsistence farmers divorced from the world (now I’m just dreaming.)

As I type this there is a slightly sauced, possibly homeless man sitting across the table from me charging his cell phone. He keeps telling me how pretty I am and that he'd just like to kiss me. You can't make this stuff up.

If a woman lives in society she will confront leering, catcalling, gender-defined roles in sports, work, family, and appearance; and my favorite, pay gaps attributed to lack of experience. Most American women are just the first or second generation of full-time working women in their families. We get that our resumes don’t show decades of career climbing and we're happy to earn that pay raise thankyouverymuch. But the things that kept our grandmothers and moms from the workplace shouldn’t keep any more women from starting and advancing their careers at the same time as their male peers. And arguments like men need to earn more because they’re family providers, or advancement linked to the potential of pregnancy – those need to die out immediately. Dead, gone, burned and buried.

Whether women are gay, straight, bi, trans or asexual there is no escape. Every woman will have to confront the messages about how she should look and what she should want.

Homophobia

It’s redundant to say the teen years are hard or that young people can be cruel, but for non-binary kids those years can be fraught with agonizing conflict. Young people growing up in liberal enclaves like Hollywood may have more daily support, but they’ll still be confronted by news about attacks on people just like them all around the world.

Worse, lesbians can be the targets of brutal beatings or “corrective rape” (ugh, my stomach turns even typing that term). A 2013 study found that nearly half of bisexual women have reported being raped, 85% of them by a male partner. And 43% of lesbian women have experienced rape, stalking, or physical violence by a partner.

To be fair, straight women and most men are just as likely to be angered and frustrated by hate crimes against any community. But we’ll never have the additional question, “Am I in danger because of [X characteristic]?” looming over us.

Heartbreak

Love in any gender can break your heart. And the actual problem of dating – which women, and I think many men also know – isn’t isolated to the male sex drive. It's true that women are traditionally considered more committed and respectful of their partners, less likely to hit it and quit it. But relationships with people are always fraught with the potential for imbalance and heartbreak.

By the time McLean’s girls are old enough to date the hookup culture will be more than 40 years old. It may be harder than ever to determine who’s after what or by then the pendulum might swing back toward a slower dating process. More likely is that every young person will still experience the sting of loss and every parent will want to assuage it.

More: A.J. McLean Reportedly Celebrated His Daughter's Birth With Women, But Not His Wife

And, just a thought, a dad might be even more conflicted by wanting to string up their child’s lesbian ex since they don’t have the horny teen boy experience to relate to and blame. Didn’t think about that now did you A.J.?

Maybe McLean can just take comfort that he’s not alone. His feelings exist even halfway around the world with a saucy little Scottish girl and her headstrong pop.

I'm sure we'll hear more about the McLean family over the years but I hope someone also checks in on this adorable dad and daughter in a decade or so. I really, really want to see who comes out on top.

Someone is getting a little cheeky ahead of her wedding, and it’s Pippa Middleton. The bride-to-be was caught squeezing her fiancé’s butt. James Matthews doesn’t reciprocate, but he is gently resting his hand on the small of her back.

The happy scene is exactly the way any engaged woman would want to start off life with her fiancé. Royal watchers are expecting a big price tag on the wedding with estimates already coming in around $318,888. That's an astronomical price for Middleton's wedding. She's sparing no expense from her gown to the invite list — even Prince Harry's girlfriend, Meghan Markle reportedly scored the golden ticket to the ceremony.

Supernatural’s [SPOILER] Probably Isn’t Dead & All Thanks to a Rat

Wow. That was one helluva Supernatural episode. There's no doubt Season 12 is going out with a bang. Between Mary's now forced alliance with the British Men of Letters, Castiel off who knows where with Kelly Kline and Baby Lucifer, Lucifer now in full power and Sam and Dean locked inside the bunker without oxygen (and with Toni Bevell), a lot of prayers are needed.

More: Supernatural’s Mary Finally Comes to Her Senses, but It May Be Too Late

First off, with help from Toni, Mary has officially been brainwashed to follow in the British Men of Letters' footsteps. She is no longer in control of her own free will. She has been "realigned" to do exactly what the BMOL tell her to do. Basically, Mary is someone from Stepford Wives.

Secondly, Mary and Mr. Ketch trapped Sam, Dean and Toni inside the bunker. They have no water or air, meaning they have about two to three days of survival. Based on the trailer for next week's episodes, it looks like they get out, so at least that is some good news.

Thirdly, Lucifer is back. That's right, Crowley no longer controls him, but Lucifer controls Crowley. So much so, that Lucifer "killed" Crowley with an angel blade. The reason we place killed in quotations is because we're not convinced Crowley is dead. When the blade went through Crowley, he didn't light up like someone usually does when they die by angel blade. Also, Crowley looked straight at a rat before Lucifer stabbed him and that same rat followed Crowley's "dead" vessel when it was being dragged by his former servants.

The rat is Crowley, right? Well, every fan is hoping Crowley is now a rodent, because that's so much better than him being dead. There's just no way he is gone forever. Please, Crowley, be a rat and then get back into your vessel immediately.

This is just one big mess that Sam and Dean need to clean up, stat. Anyone else super nervous over the remaining episodes? Supernatural, you're giving us way too much stress.

Prince Philip also dressed rather spiffy, too. He donned his best khakis and paired it with a spring jacket and cap. He’s proving that retirement suits him well and it’s only the first week. Can you imagine how much bounce in his step he will have once he really settles into his private life?

6 Tips for Saving Your Furniture, Your Cat’s Claws & Everyone’s Sanity

“This is why we can’t have nice things.”

Whether it’s said in response to Kitty Katrina scratching the couch or Fido the Fearless’ submissive urination (on your carpet), this is a too-common refrain in pet-loving households. But the truth is that a little management and a few cat-friendly concessions can go a long way. Last week, we tackled the indoor-outdoor cat debate and looked at a few ways to help your cat stay safe and happy. This week let’s look at furniture scratching, what drives it and some declaw alternatives that your cat will thank you for.

More: Leaky Gut Syndrome Doesn't Just Occur in Humans — Your Dog Is Affected Too

Why cats scratch furniture

From domestic house cats to lions in the wild, all cats scratch. And they don’t scratch at the corner of the couch to upset you — though it does a good job at it. They actually scratch for good reasons.

Cats need to scratch in order to trim their nails, stretch and say, “This is mine.” Did you know cats even have scent glands in their paws that reinforce this territorial marking as they scratch? “The scent glands in his paw pads get used when he scratches on objects for marking” notes cat behaviorist and author Pam Johnson-Bennett in her article on scent communication. “In addition to leaving a visual mark from his claws, he leaves an olfactory mark through the scent glands.” Thus, scratching is literally for their physical and mental health!

Declawing can make things oh-so-much worse

Unfortunately, here in the U.S., declawing is suggested by some as a possible way to save your furniture. (It’s actually considered inhumane and illegal in places like the U.K.) However, too few people are aware of the real physical and behavioral side effects declawing can cause before they do it — side effects that are often a lot worse and may be permanent.

For example, when you declaw a cat, you take away his first line of defense, leaving biting as the only remaining solution for some. “People who are worried about being scratched, especially those with immunodeficiencies or bleeding disorders, may be told incorrectly that their health will be protected by declawing their cats,” notes the Humane Society website. “However, infectious disease specialists don't recommend declawing. The risk from scratches for these people is less than those from bites.” In my 16-plus years working in the animal welfare industry, I’ve seen and known too many cats who lose their bite inhibition after declawing, causing a much more serious problem in the household.

The experts over at PetCoach have seen other serious declawing difficulties as well. “There are many complications that can happen [after declawing your cat], from lifelong pain, regrowth of the bone tissue which can cause deformation and lifelong behavioral issues. Many cats who are declawed become biters and stop using their litter boxes due to the pain in their feet.” Often, cats who develop these issues will end up surrendered to shelters or euthanized for behavior problems that were not present before declawing. (Having other misbehavior problems? Check out the "7 Common Mistakes Cat Owners Make.")

Remember, even if a pet parent opts for what’s touted as the more “humane” laser declaw, the same side effects are possible.

Saving the sofa, your cat’s claws and your sanity

So, if declawing is off the table (which I hope it is), is it possible to save the sofa and actually have nice things as a cat mom? Yes! The trick is making some concessions to your cat’s natural need to scratch while managing where that scratching happens.

  1. Scratching post/mat: The yoga pose Cat Stretch didn’t get its name for nothing. It earned it! Those little carpeted posts at many pet stores are not always enticing. Vet Jennifer Summerfield suggests you select a scratching post “at least 3 to 4 feet tall so that the cat can stretch all the way out when scratching. It should also be heavy and solid — if the post feels flimsy or tips over when the cat scratches, he won't want to use it. Finally, most cats prefer rough coverings like sisal rope or something similar rather than carpet.” And don’t worry, not all scratching posts are ugly. In fact, the folks over at Hauspanther have a selection of gorgeous cat scratchers preselected from all over the web.
  2. Location, location, location: Placement of your scratch equipment is a big consideration. Cats will often want to scratch after naps or pick a few choice spots around the house. Place the scratching posts or pads near here to give your cat a better choice. When you see kitty going to scratch appropriately, treat and praise like crazy.
  3. Couch treatments: Sprays and fabric fresheners can be repulsive to cats. Orange and lemon are particularly disliked by many. These scents can deter your cat from scratching, and bonus, your couch will smell great!
  4. Spa day: Trimming your cat’s claws can help reduce the damage done to anything your cat does scratch. Learn how to properly trim your cat’s claws at home.
  5. Double-sided furniture-safe tape: Your local pet store should have a special tape you can add to your cat’s favorite corner of the couch. The tape is safe both for the cat and the fabric of your couch. The stickiness is annoying to your cat and will encourage him to scratch elsewhere. Once the scratching has been relocated, you can take the tape off.
  6. Nail cap: For those of you who really want no chance at all of scratching but want to keep your kitty feeling secure, consider asking your vet about nail caps. These work sort of like acrylic nails. A nail cap is a vinyl cap that is glued to your cat’s claw. This still allows cats to use their claws, but without the sharp edge that can cause damage to furniture or skin. They even come in a fun assortment of colors.

In all, making just a few adjustments to help your cat learn where scratching is allowed can help keep your kitty happy and your couch looking great and avoid some serious issues down the line.

Pippa Middleton Shows Some Next-Level PDA with Her Fiancé

Someone is getting a little cheeky ahead of her wedding, and it’s Pippa Middleton. The bride-to-be was caught squeezing her fiancé’s butt. James Matthews doesn’t reciprocate, but he is gently resting his hand on the small of her back.

The happy scene is exactly the way any engaged woman would want to start off life with her fiancé. It's an off-the-cuff moment that's sweet and naughty all at once — except most moments like this aren't caught by a paparazzo's camera. That's when you know Middleton's life is just a little bit different than yours.

Come on, you know you want to see the photo. Popsugar posted the playful photo on Thursday and it's definitely worth seeing.

Now, while you and I think it’s a fun photo, how do you think the Queen would react? Even though she’s adapted to modern times — a bit — I doubt she wants to see anyone grabbing at body parts in public. There still is a sense of protocol even when you are only royal adjacent like Middleton is to her sister and brother-in-law.

As evolved as the Queen is in 2017, you know she thinks behavior like this is improper. But let’s face it, there’s nothing she can do. Middleton is not destined for the throne, she’s a commoner who is related to royalty by marriage.

While it isn't a royal wedding, all eyes will be on Middleton's nuptials because of her family members in attendance. Prince George and Princess Charlotte are participating in the big day while big sister Kate will be sitting this one out. She’s not going to upstage the bride or the hopeful post-nuptial butt grab.

OMG, Did Grey's Anatomy Just Kill Off [SPOILER]?

As seasons of Grey's Anatomy go, Season 13 has been relatively low-key when it comes to drama... until now. On this week's penultimate episode, the veteran series took an explosive turn that may have deadly consequences for a Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital doctor.

The episode started off on a sweet note, with Nathan Riggs waking up in Meredith's bed. Since she hasn't yet introduced him to her kids, he has to sneak out before they see him. It's a nice step in the right direction for Mer, but her newfound domestic happiness may be short-lived.

More: Meredith Just Made a Huge, Heartrending Decision on Grey's Anatomy

At Owen's house, a knock on the door reveals two army officers who tell Owen something about his sister, Megan. We're not sure what exactly they tell him at first, because we're seeing things through the lens of his PTSD.

Meanwhile, Alex is in LA, where he is one step away from stalking Jo's husband who — get this — is a handsome doctor. Also a dill-hole, but nonetheless.

Back at the hospital, Owen continues to struggle to maintain his grasp on the here and now, snapping at a patient's family. When Amelia follows him into an empty room and asks him what's wrong, he tells her that the officers at his door informed him Megan is alive. After nearly a decade presumed dead, she's alive!

Amelia takes his hand and tells him they'll figure this out together, which is about as much as they've spoken in months.

Because this is a hospital, activity continues to buzz around about them, despite Owen essentially being paralyzed by his fear and guilt over his sister. The big case of the shift seems to be a couple who came in with catastrophic injuries after apparently popping the parking brake on their car while having sex. Yowza.

Stephanie's there, but she's in hot water with Eliza Minnick for skipping out on counseling. As a result, Eliza refuses to let her tackle any surgeries and sticks her with watching over the still-unconscious male half of the sex-in-the-car accident.

When the woman wakes briefly and seems frantic to find out if the guy, Keith, is OK, and since Keith seems to have the same reaction about the girl, Alison, everyone assumes they are in love. The truth, however, is far more sinister.

When Alison wakes up again, she explains that she wanted to kill the man — because he had held her at knifepoint and tried to rape her.

Horror soon turns to panic when Jackson realizes that he left Stephanie alone with the assailant. By the time they figure it out, both Stephanie and Keith are missing. Per his MO, he has taken her hostage by holding a scalpel to her neck.

Meredith has no idea any of this is going down, because she has already headed home for her dinner with Nathan and the kids. But when she arrives home to find Amelia consoling Owen on the couch, she comes to find out the truth about Owen's sister Megan... who also happened to be engaged to Nathan prior to becoming a prisoner-of-war.

More: Grey's Anatomy Should Rethink Amelia's Storyline, and Fast

Immediately, she feels compelled to find him and tell him. "If it was Derek, I would want to know," she tells Amelia and, with that, heads back to the hospital to track Nathan down.

What she can't see is that Stephanie is now locked in one corridor of the hospital with the frantic assailant, along with a little girl named Erin who had a penchant for wandering. Keith is desperate and trying to start enough of a fire to set off the fire alarm so the emergency locks will open.

And that's when Stephanie makes her move.

Grabbing the bottle of alcohol, she pours it all over him. As soon as a spark falls from the makeshift lighter, he ignites. Although Stephanie tries to protect Erin by taking her into an adjacent room, she soon realizes that Keith's faming body is headed straight for a group of highly flammable oxygen tanks.

The last we see her, she is running toward him to try to move him away when the tanks explode. Stephanie is blown backwards, and the windows of the floor she's on shatter in a fiery explosion. Naturally, Meredith sees the explosion and knows something is terribly wrong.

As for Nathan, he still hasn't found out the fate of his former fiancée, and who knows when the timing will be right for a bombshell (no pun intended) like that. My money is on him finding out by running into Megan when she gets transferred to Grey Sloan.

But alas, poor Stephanie... is her fate sealed? We can't say we didn't see something like this coming. After all, Jerrika Hinton, who plays Stephanie, has a ton of stuff coming down the pipeline.

More: Something Major Was Missing on Grey's Anatomy This Week

The movie Odious, in which she plays a character named Sharlette, is in post-production. Also in post-production are a TV mini-series called Flip the Script (she's the "Lit Agent") and Insidious: Chapter 4. And, finally, she's set to star as Ashley Black in the new romantic sitcom Here, Now.

So what do you think? Is this Hinton taking her final Grey's bow?

A Walking Dead Actor Was Actually Part of Princess Diana's Funeral

As we approach the official 20th anniversary of Princess Diana's untimely and unfortunate passing on Aug. 31, 1997, you might be seeing an uptick in coverage on that fateful day and what happened afterwards. Her public funeral drew thousands, but would you believe me if I told you that one of the people in attendance was a future fighter of zombies on television?

More: Norman Reedus Might Be a Walking Deadman After His Prank on Andrew Lincoln

While there were most definitely celebrities in attendance at Princess Diana's funeral, Andrew Lincoln, a future Walking Dead actor and holder of creepy signs, was walking in the procession behind Princess Diana's casket. The information about Lincoln's role in Princess Diana's funeral came out during an interview with UK publication Metro back in 2008 (and it must be picking up speed once again given the upcoming anniversary).

More: 20 Years After Diana's Death, the Debate Over Her Love Life Rages On

Lincoln was brief in his recounting of the events to Metro: "It was a strange day and I just kept my head down. I was in awe of the princes. Losing a parent and then having to grieve publicly is extraordinary. I was asked because I'm a RADA graduate and all the organisations Princess Diana was a patron of were represented. We had to walk behind the gun carriage that carried her body. It was a very bizarre experience."

Indeed, at the time, Lincoln was a student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), one of the foremost drama schools in the world. Princess Diana had been a patron of RADA among a variety of charities and institutions during her lifetime. Apparently, Lincoln was part of an incredibly select group who got to walk in the public funeral proceedings. How wild is that?

There's no doubt in my mind that we'll most likely be hearing more unusual and interesting stories like Lincoln's as we close in on Aug. 31. There's plenty of new documentaries and retrospectives set to air in anticipation of the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana's death, so undoubtedly some new memories will come to light. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we get at least a few more celebrity recollections as we approach Aug. 31 because it will no doubt be intriguing to hear.

The Easiest Step-by-Step Fishtail Braid Tutorial Ever

We think that excuse is total bullshit, because anyone — and we really do mean anyone — can learn how to braid as long as they have a really excellent tutorial and at least a few levels of patience. So we asked hairstylist Jasmine Santiago to show us exactly how to create a simple, no-frills fishtail braid for even the most basic of beginners. (Hey! That’s you!) And to make it even easier, we did the whole tutorial in GIFs, because the world is a better, happier place with GIFs in it. STEP 1: Divide and cross

Step 1: Divide and cross

OK, deep breaths — we promise this isn't as difficult as it looks. The fishtail braid is just like a normal three-strand braid, where you're constantly pulling outside pieces inward, toward the middle of the braid. But instead of three sections, you've got two. To start, divide your hair in half, gripping both sections in each hand. Then, with your index finger, pull a half-inch piece of hair from the outside of the left section and cross it over, nestling it on the inside of the right section. Repeat on the other side, pulling a piece of hair from the outside of the right section and crossing it over to the inside of the left section.

STEP 2: Keep on braiding
Image: Tory Rust

Step 2: Keep on braiding

Continue the pulling and crossing (it's OK if it gets a bit messy — you're going to muss it up soon anyway) until you reach the final few inches of hair, then tie off the braid with a clear elastic.

STEP 3: Fatten it up
Image: Tory Rust

Step 3: Fatten it up

To take your fishtail from elementary school playground to holy-wow-your-hair-looks-hot, blast the entire braid with texturizing spray (less isn't more, here), then gently tug at the edges of the braid from bottom to top until it's loose and full of volume.

  1. Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast (Living Proof, $29)
  2. Garnier Fructis Dry Touch Texture Tease Spray (Garnier Fructis, $4.29)

Casually bring the topic of hair into every conversation until the general population has acknowledged and complimented you on your new braiding abilities.

Cesar Millan Gives Us Some of His Most Surprising & Effective Dog-Training Tips

Let's be real. Cesar Millan has the magic touch. It almost seems wrong to call him just a "dog behaviorist" or "pet trainer" because the guy is seriously on another level — and his reputation as the Dog Whisperer is well-earned. Suffice it to say, if Millan is giving you tips on how to whip your dog's bad habits into shape, you'd better take his advice to heart.

We chatted with Cesar Millan to ask him some of our most pressing dog-training questions, and his answers delivered some solid advice.

Image: Becci Collins/SheKnows

Dog owners make training mistakes

SheKnows: What is the biggest mistake that pet owners make with their dogs?

Cesar Millan: The most common mistake I see is not following what I call the fulfillment formula — that is, exercise, discipline then affection. We tend to give affection, affection, affection and this creates unstable dogs and bad behavior because then you have trouble earning your dog's trust, respect and loyalty.

Dog training formula: Exercise, discipline and affection

SK: How can owners instill discipline in their dogs, other than the usual "sit" and "stay" commands?

CM: This is about leadership and energy. Most training seeks to teach dogs how to obey commands, while my philosophy is more about rehabilitation through exercise, discipline and affection. A dog may be very well-trained and still be unbalanced, just as a balanced dog may not be trained. We need to start with the principles before we can get to the techniques (training methods) and that is how we achieve a positive outcome (good behavior).

Lead your dogs by example

SK: What if a dog receives one or two walks a day and still misbehaves?

CM: The walk is exercise and that's great — but that's only part of the formula. Dogs need discipline too — this is where rules, boundaries and limitations come in. Leadership is about showing the dogs — through your actions and energy — what you expect of them. Remember that you have to be consistent. If you break the rules, they will too!

More: How to Care for Your Dog's Teeth at Any Age

Be a strong pack leader

SK: And what if a dog is constantly destroying the house?

CM: The dog is trying to tell you something! Either he's not getting enough exercise to drain his energy, he's bored and understimulated, or you are not being as calm and assertive a pack leader as you need to be. The reality is that most people have to go to work and leave their dogs alone for several hours a day. So you need to get the dog, right from puppyhood, used to that reality so the dog gets used to being alone without exerting frustration.

Walk dogs into calm

SK: What can dog owners do to reduce the likelihood their dogs will misbehave when the dogs are left alone in the house?

CM: It helps to start the day with a good, fast walk. And that's not a walk where the dog is peeing on every tree and barking at every other dog on the street… which will just put him in an excited state. Then when you lock him up inside the house with that kind of energy, he's more likely to be destructive. You want him in a calm, submissive state and a brisk walk, run or bike ride is the best way to achieve that.

Also, find activities that stimulate his mind and challenge him, like search-and-rescue activities. Try a treat ball or a Kong toy, have him wear a backpack on the walk, go for a pack walk with your neighbors and their dogs, or play a game with him, even for 10 minutes before you leave the house, that challenges him to use his nose.

It's very important to analyze your own emotions and feelings. Are you trying to get away from something? How do you feel about your relationships? Remember that dogs are a reflection of us, so when we work with them, we are also working on ourselves.

Next Up: Dogs are mean — or are they?

Originally published November 2010. Updated May 2017.

{pageBreak}

Dogs are mean — or are they?

SK: Are some dogs inherently aggressive?

CM: All dogs can become aggressive, but the difference between an aggressive Chihuahua and an aggressive pit bull is that the pit bull can do more damage. That's why it's important to make sure you are 100 percent ready for the responsibility if you own a "power" breed, like a pit bull, German shepherd or rottweiler. Often we blame the breed, but in my opinion, it's not the breed, it's the owner. The owner has to be the pack leader and provide exercise, discipline, then affection. If you do that, you'll have a sweet, loving, and balanced dog — no matter what breed!

More: Why Bone Broth Is a Healthy Diet Choice for Some Dogs

Puppy mills lead to problem dogs

SK: Can you comment on the problem with puppy mills?

CM: Puppy mills — breeding without consciousness — often result in dogs that are wired wrong, with neurological problems due to the devastating breeding and living conditions they are in. We need more awareness on this to change the situation. It's important to note that aggression isn't the problem. It's the outcome of a problem.

No bad dogs, only bad dog-owners

SK: Have you ever worked with a dog whose behaviors you could not change?

CM: No, but I've worked with humans who I could not change. In many of the red-zone cases I see, the human is missing the fundamentals and not fulfilling the dog's needs. They are not loving to the highest degree because this takes putting the dog's needs first — and doing what you need to in order to earn the dog's trust, respect and loyalty by providing leadership through rules, boundaries and limitations. Once those principles are mastered, the techniques can be applied and a better outcome achieved.

Tips to improve your dog's behavior

SK: What's one action that pet owners can take that will improve their dogs' behavior?

CM: Dogs have found themselves in an odd predicament by living with humans. In the wild, dogs don't need humans to achieve balance. They have a pack leader, work for food and travel with the pack. When we bring them into our world, we need to help them achieve balance by fulfilling their needs as nature intended. This takes exercise and discipline before affection, and always maintaining your calm, assertive pack leadership.

The best ways to manage your dog's behavior:

  1. Create a schedule that includes a daily 30- to 45-minute power-walk in the morning, at the very least. This is critical for your dog's health, both physical and mental.
  2. Set aside time every day to provide mental exercise by maintaining rules, boundaries and limitations. When these needs are met, the affection you give to your dog will be channeled as a reward.
  3. Always walk out the door ahead of your dog when leaving the house. This will show your dog who is in the leadership role. On walks, make sure that your dog is not in front of you, pulling you down the street. Instead, keep your dog to your side or behind you. This will also demonstrate to your dog that you are the alpha figure.
  4. Give your dog something to do before you share food, water, toys or affection. This way the dog earns his treat. For example, have him or her perform the "sit" or "down" command.
  5. Dogs seek attention from you. But by paying them that attention when they want it, you're reinforcing the bad or hyperactive or anxious behavior that you're trying to avoid. Practice — no touch, no talk, no eye contact — and see how you fare. You might be surprised at how quickly the dog settles down and looks to you as his pack leader for direction.

The Fight to Make Fertility Treatments Financially Accessible for Same-Sex Couples

One couple, who is having a baby via surrogate, is fighting to limit the costs associated with fertility treatments.

After realizing that in Hawaii in vitro fertilization is covered by health insurances for heterosexual couples, Sean Smith and his husband, started a movement to afford same-sex couples the same privilege.

More: How to navigate IVF as a same-sex couple

Currently, only eight states, including Hawaii, cover these costs for heterosexual couples, but even that is a major savings. Smith and his husband were set back about $20,000 through the in vitro process.

“At the end of the visit, I would be going into the office and pulling out my credit card, and other people are probably just walking out and insurance is picking up the tab,” explained Smith according to NBC. “We had to borrow money, refinance a second mortgage, and I’m sure there are people who don’t even explore the option because the expenses are too great.”

The awareness campaign that Smith and his husband have sparked is especially relevant as the week of April 23 to 29 is National Infertility Awareness Week.

According to the CDC, of women between the ages of 15 and 55, 12 percent will have difficulty getting pregnant. For men, of 3.3 to 4.7 million who have reported seeing a fertility doctor, 18 percent were diagnosed with a male-related infertility problem.

SK: The last person I talked to today was using a breast pump. I didn't know what was happening!

KO: Isn’t that the weirdest sound ever? I thought somebody was choking in the bathroom one time and I tried to break down the door. But it was a poor woman breast-pumping.

Exactly one month ago, a scorpion stung a traveler on a United plane after the arachnid fell from an overhead compartment, and now, a second scorpion has been spotted, this time climbing out of a customer's clothes on a flight from Houston to Quito, Ecuador. Damn, United, not even sweet flight deals can make up for this kind of track record!

I mean, if you made a checklist of everything you don't want during air travel, United could hit every box. If you can't wear leggings, might get kicked off the flight and beat up and could be sharing your economy seat with a freakin' scorpion, what's the point of even leaving the house?

Luckily, this time the passenger wasn't stung. United directed the plane back to its gate when the creature was spotted and had medics examine the customer for any scorpion stings.

They shuffled everyone off the plane and switched aircrafts just in case they were about to run into some sort of scorpions-on-a-plane B-movie thriller situation. And it's United, so truly, who knows what might have happened considering their recent track record?

The plane was delayed for three hours, but everyone got a meal voucher so they could enjoy some food (Chili's to-go?) before their flight, which totally makes up for the threat of death by scorpion every time you fly United.

Well, I guess it's time to start searching for carry on-friendly bottles of scorpion repellent. I can put it in my United-ready weekender bag with my pajama jeans (I don't care what anyone says, they're not leggings), body cam and giant bunny-reviver pills (R.I.P. Simon).

As you likely now by now, the U.K. version of the film aired in March... but it did not include Laura Linney or her hunky love interest, Rodrigo Santoro. However, the just-released teaser trailer for the U.S. version features Linney's character — where else? — sitting at a desk somewhere.

Plus, the word on the street is that Linney gets a new paramour in the mini-film, and it is none other than McDreamy himself, Patrick Dempsey. Seriously, we wouldn't kid about such things. Check out this tweet from writer Emma Freud, who also happens to be married to Love Actually director Richard Curtis.

Be still, my heart.

Like the U.K. version, the U.S. reunion sequel will last only around 10 minutes give or take and will offer a glimpse into where the beloved characters from the 2003 film are now. This includes Liam Neeson and Thomas Brodie-Sangster's father-son duo of Daniel and Sam, Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor's not-so-newlywed anymore couple Juliet and Peter, Andrew Lincoln's love poster-holding Mark and more.

Also, FYI, you can enter online for a chance to join the cast of Love Actually for a day in London. And get this — if you win, Andrew Lincoln himself will greet you at the airport by holding a sign with your name on it.
