Warning: MiraLax Might Have Scary Side Effects for Kids

0
0

Could the popular over-the-counter constipation laxative MiraLax come with some frightening side effects? Some parents think so. Controversy over the drug started when Philadelphia mom Jeanie Ward reportedly gave her 3-year-old the drug and noticed major changes in her personality.

"Near psychiatric events with paranoia, mood swings, aggression, rage," described Ward.

The drug (with the active ingredient polyethylene glycol 3350) is not meant for kids under 17, but doctors sometimes recommend it anyway — especially when diet changes don't relieve the constipation.

More: Don't Use These Homeopathic Teething Tablets

The Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania has been studying the issue and so far has found "167 cases of adverse side effects in children who took the laxative, including 37 kids who displayed neurological or psychiatric symptoms." And there's more. In 2008, the FDA found that MiraLax powder contained "small amounts of the same toxic ingredients found in antifreeze."

Toxic ingredients? In laxative medicine?! But one expert says that "ownership of the drug has since changed hands and follow-up screenings have not revealed the chemicals."

As for side effects, the FDA has said there is not enough data to link MiraLax to serious neuropsychiatric issues in children, but has funded research to look into the use of laxative products in children.

Without a warning from the FDA, parents are taking action themselves, starting a Facebook page to educate other parents about the potentially scary side effects of this drug. There are already more than 15,000 members.

Bayer (the company that now owns MiraLax) has said the product is intended to be used once daily by adults, saying the company is "committed to ensuring the product meets all specifications for quality.”

The Cast of The Big Bang Theory Took One for the Team to Help Their Own

Leave it to the cast of The Big Bang Theory to give us all back a little faith in humanity.

More: The Big Bang Theory Warns Fans About the "Darkness" of Trump

It's no secret that the cast members on TBBT are best buds — their close friendships and chemistry are a lot of why the show is so successful. But we had no idea that they would go so far to take care of each other. A new report from Variety reveals that the five original cast members took pay cuts in negotiations for the show's upcoming two seasons just so their newer co-stars could get a raise.

Image: Giphy

Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar, who have been with the show since it began, were all earning about $1 million per episode, while Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik, who joined in Season 3 and became regulars in Season 4, were only pulling in around $200,000 per episode. The five original cast members each took a $100,000 per episode pay cut, meaning there was an extra $500,000 to be split between Rauch and Bialik, bringing their earnings up to $450,000 per episode.

That's still only half of what their longer-running co-stars make, but reports say both Rauch and Bialik are pushing the studio to pitch in too, bringing their earnings somewhere closer to what their co-stars make. After seven seasons on the show, both actresses have become pretty vital to the plot — Rauch's character is married to one of the original five, while Bialik's character is the live-in girlfriend of another. Obviously, they deserve the raise — enough that their co-stars gave up cash to make sure they got it. Those are some friendship goals.

Moaning: Who Does It, Why We Do It and How We Use It to Our Advantage

0
0

Sometimes it’s because you had a really good steak; sometimes it’s because a certain Canadian Prime Minister marches in a pride parade and speaks out about the Black Lives Matter movement; and sometimes it’s because you’re having damn good sex.

When I began my research into the history of moaning, I found, perhaps unsurprisingly, that moaning has been around forever. It’s mentioned at least nine times in the Bible (although not to do with sex, it is found in the same sentence as the word "breasts") and people definitely moan in various stories of the 18th century. The Vagina Monologues, a collection of stories about women and vaginas, has an entire (unfortunately racist) monologue about it. Almost instantly I found that only women are ever depicted moaning. So, I took to the Internet and social media to figure out why.

More: BDSM & Consent: What's the Big Deal?

The science of moaning

There are scientific studies on moaning, but not many. The most prominent is a study by Gayle Brewer and Colin Hendrie that asks heterosexual women about their moaning patterns during heterosexual intercourse. Some women moaned because something felt good, but this was not the main reason hetero women were moaning — 66 percent of women moaned because they wanted their partners to hurry up and finish and 87 percent moaned to boost their male partner’s self-esteem as they reached climax. Moaning was seen more as a tool than as a sign of pleasure, and it was exclusively heterosexual cis women moaning for the sake of hetero men.

The voices of the people

Completely unsatisfied with this lack of intersectionality, I took to social media and asked everyone I know (and also some people I don’t know) whether they moan and why. And the results were amazing.

A queer woman told me she moaned every time she had sex and couldn’t cum without moaning, even when masturbating. A nonbinary person told me that before their transition, they were silent, but now that they’re out as trans, it’s a whole new world of moans. A man told me he wouldn’t call his noises moaning, but more heavy breathing. One woman told me she was consistently silent and insecure about it. Another woman said her male partner felt ashamed of the loud noises he made (but she assured me they turned her on). A lot of people told me they had been asked to be quiet because their partner felt uncomfortable with others knowing they were having sex.

More: How to Tell Your Partner You Want an Open Relationship

In my survey on social media, I made a few main discoveries. Men are far less likely to call it moaning, but most certainly are making noises to express pleasure during sex. Women feel societal pressure to make noise (even without pleasure) and men feel the opposite. Both men and women have been asked to stop moaning. Women are much more likely to be told to be quiet or that their moans are a turn-off. But mostly, I found that a lot people of all shapes and sizes and genders moan when they experience pleasure, and the moans increase pleasure for both the moaner and the recipient of the moan.

The stigma of pleasure

So what’s the moral of the story here? First, there’s a stigma around pleasure, that’s for sure. The embarrassment felt by people answering my questions was clear; they didn’t necessarily want to admit that they were moaners unless somebody else chimed in first. But once I got people talking, they didn’t want to stop. And second, a lot of people are moaning during sex as communication, which means people are actively communicating their pleasure in bed. Communication is good — keep it up!

More: "Bachelor" Contestant Gets Real About Never Having an Orgasm

There you have it. Moaning has been around since the beginning of time, and while the stigma has built up around it (as stigma has built up around sex itself), it can be a completely healthy way to communicate desires while having sex.

Jennifer Aniston to Brad Pitt: New Phone, Who Dis?

My roommate has a complete scorched-earth policy when it comes to exes — she once broke up with a guy and then immediately quit her job without notice and moved across the continent. In most cases, I feel like that might be a tad extreme. In Jennifer Aniston's case, it's probably appropriate.

More: Jennifer Aniston Would Like You to Stop Painting Her as a Sob Story

We're all aware of poor Aniston's relationship history. She had a five-year marriage to Brad Pitt that was straight out of a fairy tale, and then Angelina Jolie swooped onto the scene, co-starring with Pitt in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Pitt pretty much immediately started cheating on Aniston with Jolie, who would later become his second ex-wife. Classy dude, huh?

But now that things have fallen apart with Jolie and she blindsided the world with divorce filings and accusations that Pitt abused their kids because she's not here to play, Pitt is apparently on the hunt for a rebound. What's worse is that he reportedly thinks he can find it by sliding into Aniston's DMs.

More: We See You Justin Theroux, With Your Subtle Brad Pitt Shade-Throwing Ways

Pitt didn't even have Aniston's number, but "tracked it down through a tangled web of contacts," according to Elle. A source told Us Weekly he went to all the trouble just so he could make the mistake most of us grow out of around college: texting his ex.

"Brad has confided in Jen," the insider said. "Brad told her he's having a hard time with his split and they exchanged a few texts reminiscing about the past."

Aniston, though, has fully moved on and is happily married to Justin Theroux, who, lesbihonest, is no downgrade from Pitt.

And their relationship must be rock solid, because that same source says Theroux knows about the texting and is totally down with it.

He's "okay with them being friends," the insider said. "[He knows] Jen just wants to be nice."

Lightly backcomb your bang area to camouflage any thin-looking hair. Pro tip: backcombing is a great trick to make hair appear thicker — doing it lightly ensures you're being gentle with your hair.

Step 9:

Take the side of your bang area with the least amount of hair and spread it out so it appears thicker. Spray into place with hairspray.

An updo gives hair the appearance of looking thicker than when it's worn all the way down. Although wearing your hair down can appear thicker with a great blow-out, thickening spray/powder and some back-combing, a few of these steps can be skipped if you opt for a quick updo like this.

Startling Rise in Babies Born With Syphilis

0
0

Thanks to a spike in sexually transmitted infection rates among women of reproductive age, there has been an alarming increase in rates of syphilis among newborn babies. Here’s what you need to know about this worrying public health trend:

STIs are at an all-time high in the U.S.

According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control, the rate of syphilis increased by 27 percent from 2014 to 2015, while congenital syphilis increased by 6 percent. Preliminary data for 2016 shows a continuation of this trend, with a 21 percent rise in syphilis among women and a 4 percent increase in congenital syphilis.

This is especially problematic given the fact that syphilis had almost disappeared by 2000, the CDC’s Gail Bolan told CNN.

More: 5 STIs That Can Threaten Your Fertility

Syphilis frequently goes undiagnosed

The fact that many women arrive at the hospital to deliver their baby without ever having prenatal care or even knowing that they have syphilis — or that they could pass it on to their newborn child — has only added to the extent of this public health crisis. This is particularly true in areas like the Central Valley in California, which is primarily agricultural and low-income, providing limited access to reproductive or general health care.

More: 39 and Pregnant...With Colon Cancer

If Trump gets his way, this will get much worse

I think we can all agree that this increase in STI and congenital syphilis rates is problematic. But keep in mind that these increases have been with existing access to reproductive and health care via the Affordable Care Act and organizations like Planned Parenthood. If the president and his party get their way and services and prevention programs are cut, this public health disaster will get much, much worse.

Testing, education and awareness works

Louisiana currently has the highest rate of congenital syphilis in the country — but it’s actually declining. Public health officials stepped up efforts to combat this problem four years ago, partnering with the CDC to expand testing sites, raise public awareness, provide education to OB-GYNs on treating patients with STIs and passing legislation requiring syphilis testing twice during pregnancy. And it’s working — congenital syphilis rates are now on the decline in Louisiana.

More: 5 Ways to Keep Your Vagina Healthy

The rise in STIs is a result of inadequate prenatal & sexual health care

We’re already seeing the effects of budget cuts in state and local STI prevention programs and access to prenatal care. This is coupled with changes in sexual behavior, including reduced condom usage and increases in the number of partners. Because many STIs don’t have visible symptoms, they frequently go undiagnosed until the infection is in its later — and more destructive — stages.

Oh, also, they're obviously at least a little serious because she's met his mom.

4 Reasons Why Pee in Pools is Bad for Your Health

0
0

What you've suspected since your first swimming lesson at the YMCA has now been confirmed by research: There's a ton of pee in public pools, and in your pool at home too. Basically, commercial pools have around 20 gallons of pee floating around with you and your kids, and private, residential pools typically have around 2 gallons.

The problem? Pee in the pool is yucky, of course, but human urine is typically sterile. But when it comes into contact with the usual disinfectants used in pools (such as chlorine) it can result in new chemical compounds that are actually pretty bad for you.

More8 Foods That Just Might Trigger a Migraine

Here's why peeing in a pool is not only gross, it can be dangerous too.

  • Those chemical compound byproducts? They can include trichloramine, which is one of the big baddies that can lead to mucus membrane and respiratory irritation. This is what we're actually smelling when we're near a pool — the byproduct of pee mixed with chlorine, not the chlorine itself. (You're welcome.)
  • Competitive swimmers and those who work around pools, such as lifeguards and maintenance workers, are at greater risk. However, even casual swimmers can experience symptoms, which can include watery, irritated eyes, irritated nose or cough.
  • Sometimes, if a pool isn't properly ventilated and the chloramine levels build up, symptoms can be severe and require medical help. They can include burning eyes, burning nose, sore throat, trouble breathing or wheezing, as a family in Nebraska experienced in 2006.

The solution? Well, everyone needs to stop peeing in pools ASAP, but that's probably not going to happen any time soon, especially since small children who aren't toilet trained contribute quite a bit of urine themselves (swim diapers don't do anything aside from keep poop from popping out — urine flows freely).

More8 Reasons You Should Pee in the Shower (And Not Feel Gross About It)

The onus, then, is on the maintenance workers to keep the pools' pH levels in line and also to keep the pool area well-ventilated. This will move the chloramines out and bring fresh air in.

Definitely, though, if you're old enough to pee in a toilet consistently, just don't pee in the pool.

4 Herbs for Natural Dog Pain Relief

0
0

Herbs have been used by humans to treat illnesses for thousands of years, and as more people show a renewed interest in herbal remedies, it makes sense that we also want to treat our pets the same way. If you want to use herbs for natural pain relief for your dog, however, there are a few things you need to know.

What is natural?

We have a tendency to assume that because something is herbal, it is also natural and safe. This can be a very dangerous assumption. Herbs can be quite potent, and in some cases, toxic at certain doses. The last thing you want to do is to give your dog a toxic dose of a natural remedy or to assume that a human dose will work for your dog. As you research herbs, remember that natural does not necessarily equal safe.

More: You use natural remedies on yourself — why not use them on your pet?

Holistic veterinarians

The best way to navigate herbal medicine and to keep your dog safe is to work with a holistic veterinarian or a veterinarian who has similar credentials, like a practitioner of veterinary Chinese medicine, a veterinary herbalist or a vet that incorporates both traditional and alternative therapies into their practice. Your veterinarian can help you choose which herb or combination of herbs is best for your dog. More important, they can also tell you the proper dosage that is both safe and effective. Many herbal remedies for dogs actually require a prescription, so play it safe and seek out a professional.

More: What exactly is a holistic vet?

Herbs for natural pain relief for dogs

Now that we’ve gotten the warnings out of the way, here are some common herbs that may offer pain relief for dogs.

Turmeric

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce inflammation and help reduce inflammation-associated pain in dogs.

More: Our favorite superfood spice should be added to your dog's diet

Ginger

Ginger, in small quantities, might help dogs with nausea and has anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce pain. In large amounts, however, it can cause digestive upset in your dog.

More: Natural ways to prevent fleas

Cat’s Claw

With a name like cat’s claw, you might be surprised to know that this herb can help manage arthritis in people and possibly dogs as long as you discuss the proper dosage with your veterinarian.

White willow bark

White willow bark reduces inflammation and is chemically very similar to aspirin. However, the herb can be toxic to cats, and you should definitely discuss the dosage of this potent herb with your veterinarian before administering it to your pet. White willow bark for dogs can also interact with other medications.

More: Pot for pets sounds great, but it's missing one crucial component: Science

When to use herbs for pain

Herbs can be a great way to help your dog manage pain, especially chronic pain, but don’t let your pet suffer for your ideals. There may come a time when herbal remedies no longer take the edge off, and as someone who has worked in the veterinary field and seen both the positive effects of herbs and what happens when owners refuse to use traditional treatments, I ask that you trust your veterinarian. If you are not happy with the treatment options your vet provides, find another vet who you do trust to monitor your pet’s pain.

HGTV's Getting Real Extra with Five – Five – Flip or Flop Spinoffs

0

Christina and Tarek El Moussa must have really caused a shitstorm for HGTV when they split up. Their show, Flip or Flop, is massively popular, but a big part of it working out is the fact that the El Moussas are a happy family who all work together. So much for that fairy tale.

More: Tarek El Moussa Just Posted More Evidence Against the Rumors About His Divorce

And so there have been a lot of rumors flying around about the future of the show. Some have said that HGTV is forcing the El Moussas to stay married or risk being sued for breach of contract. Others have said things are getting progressively more hostile on the set, and that the El Moussas spend filming time verbally abusing each other. Fans have wondered about the future of the show, now that its co-hosts have announced their divorce to the world and all the magic is gone. They're filming Season 7 right now, but there's been no word about future seasons after that.

HGTV just came up with a solution: Flip or Flop is getting spin-offs in five different cities. Apparently, HGTV isn't taking any chances and making sure it has plenty of backup couples in the event of another El-Moussa-level divorce scandal.

More: Tarek & Christina El Moussa Are Still Owning Their Power as a Team

Obviously, HGTV isn't admitting that, and execs at the network insist they had already planned all the spin-offs before the El Moussas ruined their perfect-couple image and pretty much signed a death warrant for their show.

"We've been building this franchise for over a year and a half," a network insider told Us Weekly. "We're thrilled to bring new chapters, new stories and new talent to complement a series that's been a big success."

The spin-offs will take place in Las Vegas, Texas, Atlanta, Chicago and Nashville. Vegas will be the first to premiere, on April 6. The show will feature local house-flipping couple Bristol and Aubrey Marunde, who, in stark contrast to the El Moussas, insist they never fight about anything.

"We don’t have disagreements," Aubrey said. "In our relationship, it’s pretty happy!"

Yeah, because that's believable and not pointed at all.

Joe Biden's Son's Widow Is Dating His Other Son — It's As Confusing As It Sounds

0

Let's start from the beginning here so we don't lose one another in this story.

More: Barack Obama and Joe Biden's bromance ain't no lie — just ask their wives

First, Joe Biden has four children, two sons, Hunter and Beau, and two daughters, Naomi and Ashley. Biden's son Beau died tragically in 2015 at the age of 46 after a battle with brain cancer. He was survived by his wife, Hallie Biden, and their three children.

Meanwhile, Hunter Biden, an attorney, and his wife Kathleen Biden separated in fall 2015.

Flash forward to today, when Hunter Biden announced that he and Hallie Biden (Beau's widow) have found love with one another.

In a statement to Page Six, Hunter explained, "Hallie and I are incredibly lucky to have found the love and support we have for each other in such a difficult time, and that’s been obvious to the people who love us most. We’ve been so lucky to have family and friends who have supported us every step of the way."

More: Joe Biden Might Be Running for President After All

Meanwhile, Former Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, reiterated the family's support in a separate statement: "We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness. They have mine and Jill’s full and complete support and we are happy for them."

The former vice president knows what it means to lose a spouse. Joe Biden lost his first wife and 13-month-old daughter Naomi in a car crash in 1972.

Vice President Biden cited his son Beau's death as one of the main reasons he chose not to run for president in 2016.

This would make a fantastic lifetime move, just sayin'. This family clearly knows how to make it through tragedy and have each other's backs.

When We Rise Brought the Spirit of Harvey Milk to Life

When We Rise is the type of show you go into with several boxes of Kleenex. But as emotional as the miniseries' premiere was, it didn't come close to tonight's episode.

More: When We Rise Premiere Helped Put a Broken World Back Together Again

The latest segment of ABC's powerful miniseries covered a lot of ground, but the most memorable moment was easily the assassination of Harvey Milk. It would be impossible to truly capture the shock of that pivotal moment in the LGBTQ rights movement, but When We Rise did an admirable job, using extensive real-world footage of the politician. This footage captured both the hope brought about by Milk's brief stint in politics and the despair that enveloped San Francisco when he was killed.

More: 10 LGBT Organizations That Have Made a Difference

Quick primer on Harvey Milk: He was the first openly gay person elected to public office in the state of California. His efforts resulted in the passing of a strict gay rights law in San Francisco. Shortly thereafter, he was assassinated alongside Mayor George Moscone.

When We Rise may not have focused exclusively on Milk and his accomplishments, but it did an amazing job of capturing the chaos that ensued after he died. The episode highlighted a protest-turned-riot that followed Milk's assassination, once again combining acting with footage to great effect. The show also demonstrated the slow political progress that occurred in the late '70s and '80s, largely inspired by Milk's life and death.

If Twitter is any indication, the Milk assassination was the most impactful moment of the night. Several people made their devastation known the moment Milk's assassination was revealed. Others shared their dread throughout the course of the episode — they knew exactly what was coming, but that didn't make it any easier to take.

Unfortunately, tonight was the first time a lot of people even heard of Milk and his amazing contributions to the LGBTQ rights movement. Kudos to When We Rise for bringing history to life and reminding us why we need to continue the good fight.

Bachelor Nation is in Upheaval After Kaitlyn Bristowe Made Allegations of Sexism

0
0

Bachelor Nation is in a bit of upheaval at the moment after allegations of sexism were made by former Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe. Earlier this week, Bristowe alleged she was blocked from Dancing with the Stars by a producer for The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, Mike Fleiss.

More: Gutless Wonder Nick Viall Signs Up for DWTS

This all started, indirectly some might argue, because of the announcement that current Bachelor Nick Viall would be on DWTS Season 24. Following this announcement, former Bachelorette Whitney Bischoff tweeted out that she was hoping Bristowe would have been chosen and lamented the fact that hadn't happened. Bischoff presumably brought Bristowe into the conversation because the two women maintain a friendship in their post-Bachelorette lives.

Whitney Bischoff DWTS Tweet

Whitney Bischoff DWTS Tweet

Bristowe quickly replied to Bischoff's tweet, writing that, "Actually I was offered it, had the contract & Mike Fliess [sic] told me I wasn't allowed. He said he didnt want people wanting fame after his show." Bristowe's allegation that there was an intentional block of a Bachelorette having the same access to post-Bachelorette opportunities that a former Bachelor would have access to, all at the will of a show's producer, made for some major drama.

Kaitlyn Bristowe Mike Fleiss Tweet

Kaitlyn Bristowe Mike Fleiss Tweet

Now, Bristowe explains the allegations against Fleiss, especially because those allegations insinuated serious and rampant sexism behind the scenes in Bachelor Nation. Bristowe released a statement about her allegations to Entertainment Tonight, stating that, "I believe men and women should be afforded the same opportunities. That has not been the case with The Bachelorettes and The Bachelors. I had an offer to do Dancing With The Stars and was told by [Bachelor creator] Mike [Fleiss] I could not. I was told by Mike that it is bad for his brand, and that he is sick of people wanting fame from his show."

More: Seriously, Hold My Wine — ABC Has Cast Its First Black Bachelorette

Bristowe further remarked that not only did she want to do the gig, but she was verifiably qualified, further adding to her disappointment that she had been blocked from a unique opportunity that a man (who discernibly has no dancing experience) was given: "I am a dancer and wanted to do it, [my fiancé] Shawn [Booth] wanted me to as well. He even wrote [Fleiss] emails. I told [Fleiss] it was my passion. I was told [Booth] should be my only passion."

Wait, what? If what Bristowe reports is true, especially that part where Fleiss allegedly told her that she should only be passionate about her fiancé, the proverbial shit is about to hit the fan. Despite Fleiss reaching out on Twitter and attempting to smooth things over, Bristowe is simply not having it. She rejected his apology by tweeting out this reply: "Thanks I'll get right on that opportunity 2 yrs ago. I wonder what changed your mind?" implying that she cannot just go back in a time machine and regain the opportunities that are now completely lost to her.

If this is true, it would appear that Bristowe has uncovered something insidious about the way post-Bachelor and Bachelorette careers (which can be full of sponsor deals and other television show gigs for the right person) are guided and shaped.

The St. Patrick's Day-inspired ice cream shake has been hitting McDonald's menu in March since the '70s, and there's a reason it's been a seasonal staple for the past four decades — because it's insanely good. But if you'd rather skip the fast-food drive-thru this year, it's easy to make your own frosty treat at home.

Try this Shamrock Shake recipe from McCormick, which according to a McDonald's spokeswoman, is very similar to what you'll get at the golden arches.

Want Once Upon a Time Season 6 teasers? We’ve got ‘em — 9 to Be Exact

0
0

It has been an excruciatingly long time since new episodes of Once Upon a Time have aired. The last time fans watched it was last December. It's finally time for the ABC series to return for the rest of Season 6, and we even got a sneak peek at the spring premiere.

More: Why August's OUAT Return Is the Best Thing to Happen to Season 6

We know. You're totally jealous, aren't you? For those who can't recall because it's been forever, OUAT left off with Regina and Emma getting trapped in the wish realm thanks to Regina coming face to face with Robin. If that isn't bad enough, the hooded figure who will supposedly kill Emma was unmasked and it is none other than Gideon, aka Rumple and Belle's now-grown adult son.

As for the new episode, which airs this coming Sunday, it picks right up where it left off. Of course, we can't give away major spoilers, but we are able to provide a few teasers to hold you over until then. And because we are so generous, here are nine.

1. A new Hook

Captain Hook
Image: Giphy

Without saying too much and ruining a particular Hook moment for you, let us just say that you've never seen him like this before. Trust us when we say you'll have a hard time not laughing.

2. So much Robin & Regina

Robin Hood
Image: Giphy

Now that Robin is somewhat possibly back in the picture, there are plenty of Robin and Regina moments that just might make up for, you know, the series killing off Robin way too soon.

3. A surprising return to Storybrooke

Regina Mills
Image: Giphy

That is all we can say about this. We certainly didn't think it would happen, but it did.

4. Emma's "death"

Emma Swan
Image: Giphy

You know that so-called premonition Emma's been having about her own death at the hands of the hooded figure (who may or may not be Gideon)? Well, this comes into play once again in an important way.

5. For Rumbelle fans

Rumbelle
Image: Giphy

For those who may still be rooting for a Belle and Rumple reunion (we so aren't), let's just say they share plenty of scenes together in the episode.

6. August returns

August Booth
Image: Giphy

It's no secret that August is returning and this is where it all begins. The way he comes back into the picture should please fans.

7. An Emma flashback

This particular flashback of young Emma Swan comes with a discovery.

8. Hook and Charming

Who doesn't love it when Hook and Charming not only get along, but also work together? You'd better get ready to enjoy even more Hook and Charming.

9. More about Gideon

Gideon, OUAT

If you're confused about Gideon — how he's aged so quickly, his agenda, his life story and anything else — you will learn a bit more about his story.

Who's ready for more OUAT goodness when it returns Sunday, March 5 at 8/7c on ABC? Yeah, us too.

If Kate Middleton Had a Kensington Palace Exhibit...

0
0

Is it too soon for a museum exhibit extolling the virtues of all things Kate Middleton? The Duchess of Cambridge probably won't be queen for a very long time, but in the six years she's been a royal, she has cemented her place in pop culture and captivated the world with her beauty, fashion choices and charitable work — not to mention her storied romance with Prince William. Definitely deserving of at least a small display in Kensington Palace next to Diana's, don't you think? If we were putting together an exhibition of all things Kate, here are some items we'd include.

The story goes that although Will and Kate were already friendly while attending the same university, it was the night that Kate walked in a school fashion show wearing a very sheer dress with just her undergarments below that she really caught the eye of her prince (can't say we blame him). Their romance began shortly afterward. That see-through dress is just as important to shaping the future of the monarchy as Kate's wedding gown!

Her blow-dryer and round brush

If anyone ever had the epitome of princess hair, Kate's it. Her luscious, glossy locks are always perfectly styled in the most gorgeous blowout you've ever seen. Granted, her monthly hair stylist budget is probably equivalent to our mortgage (or more!), but it is worth every penny. Kate's blow-dryer and round brush definitely deserve a spot in the exhibit for shaping the most important piece of her look.

Her skinny jeans

Literally the only pants we've ever seen this woman wear are her beloved skinny jeans, and she wears them well. She wears them to yacht races. She wears them to play volleyball. She wears them wine-tastings. She wears them to camp with the Girl Guides. We've seen them in black, in dark indigo, olive green, even in coral. Boot-cut jeans need not apply.

Her nude pumps

It's always a little surprising when Kate breaks out a pair of shoes other than her trusty nude pumps. They are her go-to for dresses of all hues and levels of formality. She knows a great fashion secret: They make her already miles-long legs look even longer.

Her black eyeliner

Rumor has it that Kate took makeup lessons before the royal wedding so she would always be camera-ready, and the first trick of the trade they must have taught her was to always wear black eyeliner. It makes her eyes pop in pictures and helps people pick out her facial features from a distance at personal appearances. Now we don't think we'd recognize her without it!

Her Girl's Guide Brownies uniform

You guys, how cute is she? Look at her! So adorable and regular kid-looking in her Girl's Guide Brownie uniform? What's really cool is that she is now a patron of the scouting organization, and that uniform is a great reminder of her regular girl roots.

Her charm bracelet from Camilla

Kate Middleton charm bracelet

There's an old story that shortly before her wedding to Prince Charles, Diana found a bracelet meant as a gift for his then-mistress Camilla and nearly called off the wedding. While we'd love to get our hands on that little bauble — you know, just for history's sake, of course — another bracelet has made its way through Camilla into the history books. Kate's now-stepmother-in-law reportedly gifted her a lovely gold charm bracelet with both of their initials as a symbol of her unending support, and Kate is often seen wearing it both to official engagements and off the clock. More than a mere piece of jewelry, the bracelet shows exactly how far the family has come from the days when Princess Margaret was not allowed to marry the man she loved because he was divorced, to Charles and Diana's marriage falling apart over his affair with Camilla, to Camilla (herself a divorcée) and Charles marrying after Diana's death. The piece is a reminder that the royals will always give Kate their unwavering support — something neither Diana nor Camilla enjoyed for a very long time.

Her wedding gown

Kate Middleton wedding gown

Kate Middleton wedding gown

It was the most anticipated wedding gown in a generation, and it single-handedly brought sleeves back to brides. Kate's lace-covered, hand-embroidered Alexander McQueen gown was understated yet regal, classic yet original and perfectly princess-like in every way. Unlike Diana's Dynasty-era frock, which was dated almost as soon as it debuted, Kate's gown would look as timeless on Princess Charlotte one day as it did on her mum.

How My PTSD Diagnosis Finally Helped Me Recover From My Rape

0
0

Nearly a year after I was raped, I sat in a hospital in Portland, on suicide watch and told a nurse on staff what brought me there. I described being startled and afraid when a cyclist rode behind me as I walked down the sidewalk, sometimes waking in a sweat from nightmares and feeling like I was blamed by police when I reported what happened to me.

I told the nurse that I broke down in tears when I tried to do yoga because it reminded me of the yoga class where my rapist and I met and said I felt unsafe when in close quarters with strangers. After listening closely to my story, the nurse told me that those all sounded like all of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

More: How Improving My Overall Health Helped Regulate My Period

He was the first professional to not only name what was troubling me, but also reassure me I could move past it. When he said, "Based on what you're telling me, and how you're telling me, I have every reason to believe you can get better," I was relieved to know I didn't have to be imprisoned by nightmares, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks and panic attacks forever.

The hopelessness I felt about being raped began to ease. His words helped me feel visible as a human being and made my response to trauma something real instead of something that just existed in my imagination. It was the most supported I'd felt by any professional since I'd been raped.

Unlike the detective to whom I reported the year before, who painted me as the aggressor in his assessment of my rape, the nurse validated my experience. Because of his compassionate response to what I told him, I felt more comfortable seeking support from organizations instead of just trusted individuals.

I called Portland Women's Crisis Line, a local rape crisis center, and through them, found out my experience of being blamed for my rape was heartbreakingly common. I also found out nightmares, hyper-awareness and trouble feeling safe were all common symptoms of PTSD experienced by survivors of sexual violence. I definitely wasn't the only one who’d been affected by PTSD after being raped, and knowing this helped me feel less alone.

More: 5 Ways to Keep Your Vagina Healthy

It wasn't until the nurse told me what I was going through had a name that it became real to me in the sense that I now knew there was a road map to recovery. I'd never heard of PTSD before then and never knew rape survivors are commonly affected by it.

I knew it was traumatic and hard to talk about for many survivors, and the victim advocate present for the rape exam I went through immediately after the rape had warned me that “anniversaries are hard for people,” but no one had ever told me that nightmares and insomnia might be part of the deal. No one told me what hyperawareness was or how to recognize a panic attack or flashback.

Unbeknownst to me, I began having flashbacks and feeling an acute sense of panic within the first two months after I was raped, but I was in such a state of shock at the same time that I didn't even realize anything was different. Looking back on that time, it's all a blur of uncertain memories plugged into a scattered timeframe.

blurred lines

It wasn't obvious to me I was struggling because I didn't feel unsafe all of the time. After all, I was still functioning, and once the initial sense of intense shock dissipated within the first three weeks, I thought I was back to normal. It took me several months to even recognize that my nightmares, hyperawareness and panic were all tied to the rape.

Lacking a truly safe place to process the impact being raped had on me — not just mentally and emotionally, but physically — I felt pressure to stuff it down and act like nothing was wrong. I thought that no one would believe my story because the police dismissed it as false. Or because the official conclusion of the state of New Mexico that "no crime occurred" was clearly written in black and white in the letter they sent me telling me I was ineligible for counseling funds because "nothing happened."

Some of the people closest to me engaged in victim-blaming. Not knowing how to process the blame directed at me by the detective, the state, the victim advocate and even my family and friends, I crumbled under the weight of it all.

Had any of those people known how to respond with more compassion, the outcome might have been immensely different. While I experienced plenty of blaming and shaming from all over the place, I also had support from other people, including friends and acquaintances who became closer friends in the year after I was raped.

Maybe if I'd been given even a few national resources by the victim advocate, I could have navigated my way to help long before I became suicidal. Maybe if I'd known sooner what the symptoms of PTSD were and had reassurance that I could work through whatever came up, I could have made more strides forward in the first year rather than drowning in a sea of confusion and pain.

My experience has shown me there is still a taboo around talking about rape and its aftermath. Most people don’t want to have such an uncomfortable conversation. But by not directly confronting these issues, we perpetuate myths and misinformation and continue to misplace blame on survivors. This misplaced blame directly contributed to my suicidal feelings because my truth was dismissed as a lie — or as my fault — so often and so widely.

If you or someone you know is struggling with any of these symptoms after a traumatic event, please know you are not alone and there are a lot of tools available to help you cope. You are not to blame if you are the victim of a crime, and your feelings — whatever they are — are all valid.

What Exotic Animals Cay You Legally Have as a Pet?

0
0

It goes without saying that owning a tiger is going to be much different from owning, say, a golden retriever. One of these furry friends likes to chase sticks and get tummy rubs; the other one eats up to 88 pounds of meat in one sitting.

That said, a quick online search makes both easily available for purchase online. But owning a pet of any kind comes with countless responsibilities, and taking on an exotic pet comes with additional obligations to consider before jumping into the wild world of pet ownership.

More: 10 Pets to fall in love with besides a cat or dog

Before falling hard for an exotic animal, be sure to check the local animal bylaw before making a purchase. “There may be fines and/or confiscation of the pet and possible euthanasia if a suitable place can't be found for it,” warns Kim Meehan, who sits on the board of and volunteers at Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary. Everyone fondly remembers Darwin the Ikea monkey, who captured headlines around the world in December 2012 but was later taken from owner Yasmin Nakhuda and placed in a sanctuary after a lengthy legal battle. And far more tragic were the two New Brunswick boys who were killed by a 4-metre-long African rock python that had escaped its enclosure in a pet store underneath the apartment in which they were sleeping.

Every province except Ontario either prohibits exotic pets or regulates them in some fashion. So while it’s illegal to own a squirrel or raccoon in Ontario, there is no province-wide ruling against keeping a lion or tiger, for example. And even though other provinces have stricter policies, it isn’t always clear what species are permitted. In Saskatchewan, for example, no exotic animals are banned specifically, but the government has simply not been issuing permits for certain species in quite some time.

More: 7 Celebrities with surprisingly exotic pets

According to Catherine Gulliver, editor of Animal Law in Canada, the topic of keeping exotic animals as pets in Canada is clearly an interesting problem. “The problem is caused by Canada’s division of power between the federal jurisdiction and the provincial jurisdiction created by the BNA Act. Animals are considered personal property, but the provinces have jurisdiction over property. Each province has its own rules and legislation that govern animals in general. The problem stems from the fact that there is no standardization or uniformity of the laws governing all animals, including exotic animals, across Canada. Furthermore, exotic animals are not defined.”

To find out if an animal is allowed into Canada, go to Environment Canada's CITES site, and select Species Search List. In any event, one can import certain exotic animals to Canada directly from other countries with permits, so it’s really important to buy from a recognized local pet store or reputable breeder.

But just because there may not be a law preventing you from purchasing a certain reptile, it doesn’t mean it’s a wise choice.

More: 9 Exotic cat breeds every cat lover should know

All exotic animals require special attention beyond those of a pet cat or dog. Hopefully the pet store or breeder can provide this specific information. It is incumbent on the new owner to know the law and care of any animal, exotic or not. But Gulliver cautions, “The medical needs of exotic animals may go beyond the specific knowledge of the local vet.” Usually even run-of-the-mill exotics — the lizards, cockatoos and tropical fish found in your local pet store, potential alternatives to cats and dogs for allergic animal lovers — require special attention, so doing all your homework may not even prepare you for the true commitment needed. “It’s like the teenager that wants a tattoo. Before getting any tattoo, place a diagram of the tattoo on your bedroom wall. If after a month you still want it, go for it,” Gulliver says.

If the people who advocate on behalf of exotic animals seem unnecessarily cautionary, it’s because they have a very real understanding of the possible problems. For example, many of these animals do have special needs, from food to temperature and humidity. Meehan warns, “Most reptiles, if not cared for properly, will get metabolic bone disease and will have drastically shortened life spans as well as pain from poor diet and inadequate supplementation. Monkeys, other mammals and birds are often fed incorrectly and suffer dental issues as well as nutritional deficiencies.”

So doing your homework is necessary as well as sourcing a local vet to consult once you obtain your pet.

Gwyneth Paltrow's Been Hiding Her Smoke Show Boyfriend for Years

It's not often we get an inside look at Gwyneth Paltrow's love life anymore.

Once an A-list actress with a highly public romantic life until she "consciously uncoupled" from ex-husband Chris Martin in 2014, Paltrow now spends her days working at her lifestyle brand, Goop, and pretty much staying out of the public eye. And who can even blame her? Being that famous must be exhausting.

Still, we've known Paltrow has had a little somethin'-somethin' on the side for a while now, even if she's been keeping him all to herself. And on Wednesday, she gave us just a tiny li'l peek into her private life when she shared a selfie to Instagram with her long-rumored BF: Brad Falchuk.

"Happy birthday, handsome," she captioned the photo, which is a little blurry, but still so adorable.

Paltrow met Falchuk, the co-creator of Glee, when she did a guest stint on the show back in 2010. That was years before she and Martin called it quits, but there must have been something there, because Paltrow and Falchuk were rumored to be a thing within months of Paltrow's official split from Martin.

Even though it's pretty much common knowledge that Paltrow and Falchuk are low-key together, though, they almost never talk publicly about their relationship. This is only the second time Falchuk has made an appearance on Paltrow's social media — he was included in a photo collage she made of all the special people in her life over Thanksgiving, and other than that, there's no online evidence of their relationship.

They definitely have plenty in common, though. One of the very few times Paltrow has spoken to reporters about Falchuk, she revealed that he and his ex-wife still get along and have regular family time, even after their divorce. Paltrow and Martin are famous for doing the same.

"[Brad] has his own version of it, his own family where it's not a couple but it's a family," Paltrow explained.

Virginia’s Governor Vetoes Bill That Would Have Defunded Planned Parenthood

Finally, some good news: Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe's veto of HB-2264 helped protect Planned Parenthood from being defunded in the state.

The language of the bill would have limited the amount of funding that could be sourced to organizations like Planned Parenthood from the Virginia Department of Health.

In a statement, the Governor said:

“I veto House Bill 2264, which would prohibit the Virginia Department of Health from entering into contracts or providing funds to any entity that performs non-federally qualified abortions.”

The Governor further expressed his stance on the issue by sending out a series of tweets that explained his reasoning behind the veto.

“It’s time that our General Assembly understands that we have a responsibility to protect the rights & dignity of women,” he explained in a tweet. “Without access to reproductive care & the freedom to exercise choice, women are denied the choice to make deeply personal health decisions.”

Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation make it possible for women to have affordable reproductive health options, including (but not limited to) preventative care, like birth control and family planning options, like abortions.
