Game of Thrones might not be coming to an end after Season 8 after all

Break out the tankards of ale, HBO execs have confirmed that they are seriously considering a Game of Thrones prequel show.

More: Game of Thrones fans may finally know Jon Snow's true name

Just when we were all starting to fret the end of the show after Season 8, our hopes have been renewed.

At the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday, HBO original programming president Casey Bloys said nothing firm has been decided about a spinoff show for the Game of Thrones franchise, but it is something the network is in serious talks about.

"All I can say is that we’re exploring it. We don’t have any scripts, we’re not even close to saying, ‘Oh, let’s do this,’” Bloys said, according to Variety. "But it’s a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it. It’s a really rich world. We’d be foolish not to look at it."

More: Think about it, Game of Thrones' Dany and Jon will totally end up together

Author George R.R. Martin himself has written several prequel novellas for the franchise, and the flashbacks viewers saw in Season 6 of the show proves that the Targaryen backstory provides more than enough material for another show in the making.

HBO does have a few years still to develop the series before the panic over the loss of Game of Thrones really settles into fans' minds. But it will be upon us sooner than I'd like to admit. In other words, bring on the prequel!

Bloys also addressed the idea of another show in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, explaining, "We’ll take some shots at it. I’m not going to do it just to do it. It has to feel very special. I would rather have no sequel and leave it as-is then have something we rushed out."

More: Don't mourn Game of Thrones' series finale news — it's actually for the best

"A prequel feels like it has less pressure on it [than a spinoff]," he added. "[Martin’s history of Westeros] gives you areas in which to say to a writer, 'If you were going to do this, then go flesh it out,' and we’ll see what comes back. But I don’t feel any pressure that we have to have something."

Fifty Shades of Grey's Jamie Dornan wouldn't be friends with Christian Grey

If Christian Grey were real, he wouldn't find a friend in Jamie Dornan.

More: Eloise Mumford: What everyone's getting wrong about Fifty Shades of Grey

It honestly isn't that surprising, seeing as how Christian Grey doesn't really seem to have that many friends to begin with, but Dornan revealed Christian isn't the type of guy he's interested in associating with.

"[Christian Grey's] not the sort of bloke I'd get along with," Dornan explained in the February 2017 issue GQ Australia. "All my mates are easy going and quick to laugh — I wouldn't imagine myself sat in a pub with him. I don't think he would be my type, when it comes to choosing mates."

He also said he doesn't have the same sexual preferences as Christian.

More: 5 things you didn't know about Jamie Dornan that will make you LOL

"It doesn't float my boat," he said of Christian's S&M preferences. But was sure to add, "I've always been open-minded and liberal — I'd never judge anyone's sexual preference. Whatever gets people off is entirely up to them and there's a million different ways to please yourself, sexually."

Despite the fact that he's not into the character he plays or the plot surrounding his character, Dornan did say he isn't surprised by the film's success at all.

"You don't have to be a scientist to work out that 100 million readers of the book will translate into bums on seats in the cinema. But I didn't expect it to be this big, to be honest."

Peta Murgatroyd is getting real about post-baby bodies.

In order to inspire fans and let them know that even celebrity bodies take time to snap back to post-baby shape, Murgatroyd posted a photo in a bra just eight days after giving birth.

"Real life: I took this photo 8 days post birth," she captioned the photo. "I left the hospital looking 5 months pregnant. Many people think a woman should shrink right back to her pre-birth weight immediately. That is just not the truth for most. The female body is incredible and resilient, but healing and strengthening take time."

She added, "Now it's time for patience and hard work. Lots of love to all the new mamas out there on the journey."

The post has already gone viral because it's realistic, and women are celebrating her honesty about the hard work it takes to get back into shape.

Prior to her pregnancy, Murgatroyd's stomach was all abs so she obviously knows all about the hard work she needs to put in in the gym.

It's also clear that there is more to post-baby life for Murgatroyd than just her fitness.

David Charvet disappointed us with his misogyny on Celebrity Apprentice

$

We loved Brooke Burke-Charvet on Dancing with the Stars, but aren't convinced that she's pulling her weight on Celebrity Apprentice. It doesn't help, however, that her husband is willing to let her fail, so long as it means he can hang on to his self-perceived masculinity.

More: Eric Dickerson should never have been on Celebrity Apprentice

During the first half of tonight's episode, the big challenge involved a photoshoot highlighting the versatility of Kawasaki motorcycles. The guys' team (led by Carson Kressley) took some big risks, while the ladies (led by Kyle Richards) aimed to show just how empowering Kawasaki can be for female riders. Sadly, despite offering some truly stunning images, the gals fell short — and we think David Charvet was largely to blame.

More: Don't discount Arnold Schwarzenegger as the new boss on Celebrity Apprentice

Kawasaki really wanted both teams to push the envelope, and at first, it seemed like the female team might succeed in that regard. Burke-Charvet was supposed to present an image of female empowerment by posing on the front of a motorcycle while her husband grasped her waist. Unfortunately, her husband was incredibly opposed to that idea. He didn't think it was authentic for Burke-Charvet to sit in front and him behind because they would never do that in their real-life relationship.

Brooke Burke
Image: NBC

We sort of get Charvet's reasoning, but he came across as very insecure in his masculinity. After all, it really doesn't matter how he and his wife ride a motorcycle in the real world — they just need to tell a story in a photoshoot. Then again, we doubt Charvet was truly concerned about the authenticity of the image. Ultimately, he just didn't want to be see on the back of a motorcycle.

We were especially annoyed when Charvet whined about Arnold Schwarzenegger thinking of him as a wimp. Seriously? Even if Schwarzenegger thought that, he probably has no idea who Charvet is, nor does he care one iota if the husband of a Celebrity Apprentice contestant looks slightly feminine in a random photo.

More: The Apprentice turned into a presidential campaign when no one was watching

In the boardroom, Schwarzenegger highlighted the ridiculousness of Charvet's refusal. The Governor said that he would happily pose for a photo behind a female on a motorcycle, especially if it led to a significant check to the charity of his choice.

Ultimately, the blame for the gals' loss still rests with Richards. She could have chosen a different picture to use in the campaign, but she decided to stick with the least groundbreaking photos. If there's a real loser, though, it's David Charvet.

Did Kyle Richards deserve to be sent home? Or should Brooke Burke-Charvet have been held accountable for her team's loss? Comment and share your opinion below.

Don't make fun of The Bachelor's Corrine (too bad), she's clearly narcoleptic

Corrine is clearly The Bachelor's most... outgoing contestant this season, so what's her deal?

More: Catherine Giudici's texts to Nick Viall revealed in phone hack

On tonight's episode, she skipped the rose ceremony to sleep. Then took a nap during her group date. Then spent some time grinding on Nick in a bouncy castle and then slept some more while the rest of the girls continued with the pool party.

I know The Bachelor contestants don't get much sleep, so the rumors go, but Corrine is taking this napping thing to a whole new level.

More: Come on, Andi Dorfman, give us all the dirt on the new Bachelor Nick Viall

This girl seems to give in to her baser instincts really easily. When she's not trying to have sex with Nick, she's passed out in a corner somewhere.

I honestly wonder if she's narcoleptic. Either that or she's just drunk all the time. It's, quite honestly, hard to tell.

The Bachelor's Corrine

Here's the thing about Corrine: I don't think she's a stupid girl. I think she's an immature girl. She's only 24, after all. And she still has a nanny. Clearly, she's still got some growing up to do.

And, ya, Nick might find her fun in the wake of all the drama, but she isn't yet at the point in her life where anyone should be considering her as a wife. May as a Real Housewife... but we all know how those marriages tend to end...

Of course Justin Bieber isn't digging Selena Gomez's new romance

In recent weeks, the media has been focused on Selena Gomez's romance with The Weeknd, and apparently her most famous ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, has some thoughts on it.

And he's not exactly playing the role of a supportive ex.

More: We seriously doubt Selena Gomez is still hung up on Justin Bieber

According to TMZ sources, Bieber reportedly thinks Gomez is just using The Weeknd for a career opportunity.

We get it. No one wants to see their ex move on, and it must be even worse when every move is documented by the media so you really can't avoid seeing it play out, but this new report doesn't exactly paint Bieber in the best light.

More: Selena Gomez didn't break any girl code by hooking up with The Weeknd

The sources claim that Bieber feels as though Gomez is simply using The Weeknd for promotion because she wants to release new music — and apparently, the pair are currently collaborating on music together.

The site also claims that Bieber feels as though Gomez has a bit of a pattern when it comes to the men she's hooked up with in the past: She dates men she wants to collaborate with. Among Gomez's past hookups, TMZ names Bieber, Nick Jonas and Zedd.

And this has apparently resulted in Bieber "rolling his eyes" at the news of Gomez's new romance.

More: We bet Lionel Richie is rejoicing over Justin Bieber's relationship news

Um, let's hope that's not the case because that would be petty, right?

7 reasons a cruise is the perfect family getaway

$

Trying to plan the perfect family getaway can prove overwhelming. Not only are the options endless, but everyone has an opinion and those opinions don't always sync up. But if you're looking for a real crowd-pleaser your whole family can get on board with, consider a cruise.

More: How to save for an awesome vacation

Whether you're a veteran cruiser or a cruising newbie, this idea should appeal to you for no shortage of reasons.

1. The value can't be beat

When you go on a cruise, nearly everything you'll need is tied up in a neat little bow: the actual travel, the lodging, the food and most of the entertainment too. And since cruise lines practically always have some special running on discounted rates, you'll be amazed at how affordable it is per night for your entire family — you'd be hard-pressed to find the same value if you booked a hotel, made reservations at a restaurant, and went to a show somewhere on land.

2. It's the ultimate in convenience

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, everything you need is right on board with you. Everyone only needs to worry about unpacking their suitcase once for the duration of the trip because their room won't change. You can visit multiple destinations without ever having to repack and unpack and repack and... well, you get the picture.

More: How to have an awesome family vacation

3. There's something for everyone

It is practically impossible to get bored when you're on a cruise. Onboard amenities can include spas, casinos, water parks, movie theaters and even ropes courses! You can pick the ship with the amenities that appeal to your family the most, ensuring everyone has their own version of a dream vacation. When you add in the wide variety of onshore excursions available, the world really will feel like your oyster.

4. No one has to navigate

Unlike the classic family road trips where someone is too stubborn to ask for directions and you wind up stranded in a comically bad hotel somewhere, transportation is all taken care of when you're on a cruise. No one in the family has to guzzle coffee in an attempt to stay awake while driving late at night. No one has to be cramped up in the backseat with all the luggage. It's all taken care of so you can just focus on enjoying the experience. The cruise ship even covers ground (er, sea) while you sleep, so you can rest assured there's no stagnant downtime getting from point A to point B.

5. Two words: Separate togetherness

As a parent, you probably don't get as many opportunities to travel as you did before you expanded your family. On a cruise, you can still get the sense of having a grown-up getaway — even if you're traveling with little ones in tow. Cruise ships have fantastic programs to keep children entertained during the day so Mom and Dad can kick back and relax. Everyone wins.

More: 6 signs you're working way too much

6. The culture of travel, only less complicated

Introducing children to travel and to different people and cultures early will put them well on the way to becoming citizens of the world, so to speak. But trying to travel traditionally with small children can be daunting — the language barriers and safety considerations alone may make you second-guess any such travel until your children are older. On a cruise, though, your children can still meet people from all over the world and be exposed to different cultures... often without ever leaving the ship.

7. The food, y'all

Come on — you had to know this one was coming, right? When you travel, the cost of food can quickly add up. Before you know it, your family will have racked up a tab that rivals your total travel expenses. However, a cruise includes just about every kind of food imaginable — and it's essentially always available. The scents of cuisines from all over the world waft through the air, beckoning you to try them all. There are both sit-down and casual options, and everything is high-quality and prepared by chefs that really know their stuff. Got a picky eater? They'll be no match for the inexhaustible culinary options that are available on a cruise.

Robin Thicke & Paula Patton's custody battle is taking a more amicable turn

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton's custody battle over their 6-year-old son Julian is taking a progressive step, and the family is now attending therapy sessions in a bid to resolve their issues.

More: Police just got involved in Robin Thicke & Paula Patton's custody battle

The former couple attended the first therapy session with their son over the weekend, a source told E! News. The therapy session marks the first time that Thicke has spent time with his son since Dec. 31.

A People magazine source also shed more light on the situation. They said, "While Julian has remained in his mother's care, both parties are working with a therapist who is advising on Julian's best interest. The family attended their first joint therapy session this weekend. Ms. Patton will continue to do what is right for her son."

More: Robin Thicke's family isn't celebrating his controversial engagement

And a second insider revealed, "Robin wants to keep Julian's best interests at heart."

This seems to suggest that Patton and Thicke are trying hard to resolve their issues and that the bitter custody battle may be taking a turn for the better, whereas before it was believed that Patton had banned Thicke from seeing their only son after he allegedly spanked him.

More: Yep, Robin Thicke is still dating model April Love Geary

In court documents Thicke has previously stated that he has "never exceeded age-appropriate discipline" with Julian and only spanked him lightly as a last resort, People reports.

What do you buy the woman who has everything? The former Kate Middleton's birthday is not an occasion for a scented candle, a bottle of bubbly or even a Harrods gift card. When you're buying a present for a princess, you have to think outside the box.

More: No one will be surprised if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle get engaged in 2017

That is exactly what Meghan Markle did the first time she met the Duchess. According to The Sun, Markle (who may or may not be joining the princess club herself depending on how much you trust the tabloids) gave Kate a dream journal for her birthday (she turned 35 on Jan. 9.)

More: Prince Harry's girlfriend Meghan Markle is the modern-day princess we need

It's a thoughtful gift, but also a chance for Markle to reveal a little about herself to her potential future sister-in-law. The Suits actress runs a fashion, beauty and lifestyle site called The Tig, which focuses on mindfulness and the importance of acknowledging your innermost thoughts and feelings.

The Sun reported that the meeting between Markle, Kate, William and Princess Charlotte (Prince George doesn't skip preschool even to meet American TV stars) "went very well," and Kate loved her leather-bound dream journal, which is lucky for Harry, who reportedly values Kate's opinion about girlfriends.

Now, our next burning question... what on Earth does a princess dream about?

What we can learn from Middle Eastern women about fighting for reproductive care

$
0
0

On Nov. 9, I woke up and called my gynecologist's office to ask about IUDs. My friends who went to the same left-leaning women’s college in New England as I did flooded my newsfeed with articles about the end of Roe v. Wade wedged between donation links for Planned Parenthood.

While the reality of our situation was painful to come to terms with, it reminded me of how women in the Middle East, including Turkey, where my family is originally from, have been dealing with these kinds of restrictions for decades. When visiting Istanbul, I was shocked to find even the most basic of birth control methods, like condoms, locked behind cash registers at pharmacies. Getting access required proof of age and an unavoidably awkward conversation with a pharmacist.

More: No, Republicans: Defunding Planned Parenthood definitely won't save money

While the shared experience doesn’t make the taste any less bitter, there are some lessons to be learned here while we head into what is sure to be a harrowing time for women’s rights.

On abortion…

In Egypt and Iran, abortion is illegal except in cases where the mother’s life is at risk. A committee of doctors must agree that the abortion is legal, which in many cases is another example of a bunch of men huddling together to decide what a woman should do with her body. On this issue, Turkey and Tunisia are among the most progressive countries in the Middle East, as abortions are permitted within the first 10 to 12 weeks of pregnancy, respectively.

In the United States, 22 states impose abortion limitations after a number of weeks of gestation. Fifteen of those states draw the line at 22 weeks of pregnancy (a pregnancy is considered full-term at 39 weeks). A pregnant woman’s fate depends almost entirely on her state’s laws. Ohio’s most recent motion to limit a woman’s right to choose at just six weeks into pregnancy (a point at which many are not even aware of a pregnancy) foreshadows a dark future for abortion rights across the country.

More: Kentucky lawmaker tells women that unplanned pregnancies are "opportunities"

What lessons can we learn?

The value of organizing: Over the years, Turkish women have rallied together in protests to show the government that their rights shouldn’t become political bargaining fodder. Abortion remains legal in Turkey today, and while it’s a stretch to say these protests have secured abortion access, it’s certainly a lot harder for the government to legislate against women when they won’t just go quietly into the night.

The scores of women’s marches that are planned for Trump’s inauguration day across the country bear strong resemblance to this kind of pressure through civic engagement, and with any luck, will remind the incoming administration that women are a force to be reckoned with.

The value of giving: Women in countries like Turkey, Iran and Tunisia have continued to receive access to contraception and reproductive health services thanks to volunteer-based organizations like Women on Waves and the International Planned Parenthood Federation. Now more than ever, it’s worth supporting organizations like Planned Parenthood, Emily’s List, NOW and NARAL in the United States (both by donating and by showing up as a volunteer). For now, American women enjoy freedom of speech and expression — rights many of their Middle Eastern counterparts don’t have. Organizations like these may be common in the US, but women around the world aren’t so lucky to have established bodies that lobby and advocate for their interests.

On access to birth control…

In many countries in the Middle East, hormonal birth control is less popular than natural methods. This means guesswork and timing sex to a woman’s ovulation cycle are preferred to condoms, IUDs and hormonal birth control pills. However, hormonal and physical birth control methods can be very expensive, which is another limiting factor for many women in the region.

More: 69 percent of Americans oppose overturning Roe v. Wade

In the United States, education and access to birth control methods vary widely from state to state. In many states, abstinence-only sexual education leaves students with a woefully limited understanding of the prevention methods that are out there and the pros and cons of each. Luckily, under the Affordable Care Act, many American women currently have access to free birth control.

What lessons can we learn?

The value of an economy that caters to the needs of women: Now that the Trump administration has promised to repeal the ACA and this critical provision, it’s crucial that American women take advantage of startups like Nurx, which is currently providing free birth control to women in California, New York and Washington D.C. It’s also worth noting that expanding coverage for birth control to the Midwest and South should be a priority as a precaution against conservative state legislators in these parts of the country.

The value of education: Organizations like Karaz have aimed to create resources for men and women looking to become more informed about contraception, sexual health and access to services. Supporting nonprofits with similar educational goals (not to beat a dead horse here, but Planned Parenthood... again) is absolutely critical. An educated electorate is so much less likely to make decisions that endanger the rights of half of its population.

It doesn’t make the situation any better to know that women on the other side of the world have gone through the challenges that likely await American women with this new administration. But paying attention to how women in the Middle East have coped by organizing protests, by relying on volunteer-based international rights organizations and by producing art that challenges the submissive second-class role society has assigned to them can offer hope in challenging times. We can learn by example and we can band together: They’ve been doing it across the ocean for quite some time now.

U.S. abortion rates at lowest since Roe v. Wade

$
0
0

So much of the rhetoric surrounding the federal defunding of Planned Parenthood centered around the fact that 3 percent of the services the organization provides are abortions — which, fun fact, are not eligible for federal funds anyway. On top of that, a report released today indicates that the number of abortions in America has dropped to well below 1 million — the lowest level since 1974 when the historic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case was decided.

In addition, the abortion rate continued to decline, dropping to 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 — the lowest rate ever recorded and a 14 percent drop from 2011 according to the Guttmacher Institute report.

More: Last night's Senate Obamacare repeal vote was terrible for women

Although it is difficult to pinpoint specific reasons behind the decline, the authors of the report suggest two major possibilities.

First, the increased access to contraceptives — potentially thanks to the expanded reproductive health coverage of Obamacare — resulted in the decline in unplanned pregnancies in the United States.

So just to recap, the same reproductive health coverage that Republicans are so eager to take away is a driving factor behind the decline in abortions.

More: No, Republicans: Defunding Planned Parenthood definitely will not save money

The second possibility is that the influx of abortion restrictions passed at the state level during the past five years could have contributed to the decline because it was harder for women to access the necessary services in parts of the country with strict laws and fewer clinics.

“Restricting access to abortion may force women to delay the procedure or carry unwanted pregnancies to term,” says Megan Donovan, Guttmacher senior policy manager. “Instead, we should focus on increasing access to the full range of contraceptive methods, as well as to abortion services. Empowering women to prevent unintended pregnancies and plan their families is both a human rights priority and smart public health policy.”

Young royals urge people not to 'keep quiet and carry on'

Prince William, the former Kate Middleton and Prince Harry gave a powerful speech about mental health in London on Tuesday.

The young royals, who are passionate advocates for mental health, joined forces to unveil the next phase of their Heads Together campaign at the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

More: Weeks later, the royal family finally releases their Christmas card

The Duke of Cambridge took to the floor first, saying, "Mental health matters to each and every one of us. It matters just as much as our physical health."

The trio emphasised the importance of talking about our mental health and any struggles we might be facing. "It is no exaggeration to say that conversations — simple conversations — can be life-changing: in a workplace, in your kitchen at home, with a friend, family member or colleague," said William. "And that's what Catherine, Harry and I want to do — we want more people to be having those conversations."

More: Meghan Markle's birthday gift to Kate Middleton is just dreamy

"We have seen that two heads are better than one when dealing with a mental health problem," said Kate. "Yet, the challenge that so many people have is not knowing how to take that first step of reaching out to another person for help. Admitting that they are not coping. Fear or reticence or a sense of not wanting to burden another means that people suffer in silence — allowing the problem to grow larger and larger unchecked."

More: Celebrities who openly struggle with depression

Heads Together was launched by William, Harry and Kate last year in partnership with eight leading mental health charities and three founding partners. The charity has been chosen as the Charity of the Year for the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon, with a team of over 500 Heads Together runners raising funds and "leading by example by starting conversations on mental health with their families, friends and colleagues."

People of Britain, it's time to loosen those stiff upper lips and start talking about mental health without fear of being judged. It could help save a life.

And not that we had any doubt as to the seriousness of this relationship, but according to the publication, Markle has been using her time in London as an opportunity to get to know Prince Harry's family better, namely the former Kate Middleton. The two women are believed to have spent time together (along with Princess Charlotte) at Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace.

A source previously told the publication that Markle is loving "getting to know more of Harry's nearest and dearest," and that the meeting went well.

This report makes us even more convinced that the couple is headed for an engagement in the near future. And an insider has reportedly told Us Weekly that they see them getting engaged by spring, adding, "He's head over heels."

Sophie the Giraffe isn't the only toy with mold inside

Sophie the Giraffe is no longer simply the world's animal-themed teething toy of choice since 1961. Sophie, it appears, has been hiding a dark secret.

There's every chance that inside Sophie's 100 percent natural rubber casing lies a thick coating of black mold.

More: Honest Company recalls baby powder

Last year, an Amazon reviewer posted a picture of the insides of Sophie, writing, "Beware! If you have a drooly baby, moisture will get in the hole and you'll end up with mold! We've had ours for two years and the entire inside is coated with black mold!"

But it's Dana Chianese, a pediatric dentist from New Jersey, who's had all parents of drooling infants looking at Sophie in a whole new light this week. The mom of two told Good Housekeeping that she found "a science experiment" living inside her son's Sophie after she noticed the air coming out of the hole smelled musty. "Smelly, ugly mold [was] living in my infant's favorite chew toy!" she said.

In a statement to Good Housekeeping, a Sophie the Giraffe spokesperson said the toy's cleaning instructions should be carefully followed.

"We recommend to clean the surface of Sophie la Giraffe with a damp cloth," said Laurie Schraenen. "It should not be immersed in the water nor rinsed off to prevent water from getting inside, as she may become damaged."

It's easier said than done to keep teething toys dry — the whole point of them is to be sucked, chewed and drooled on. Despite the spokesperson's claims here, if you want to keep your kids' toys mold-free, you have to clean them. You don't have to be a scientist to know that mold is likely to grow wherever moisture accumulates in an enclosed space. And a damp cloth isn't going to cut it.

These baby-safe cleaning tips are appropriate for bath toys, teething toys and any other toys your kid likes to gnaw on a regular basis.

1. Boiling water

Place the toys in boiling water. Squeeze out any disgusting stuff from the insides with tongs. Leave them to cool, then dry thoroughly.

2. Dishwasher

The simplest way to sanitize bath toys and blast any mold that might be growing is to run them through the dishwasher.

3. Vinegar

Mix 1 gallon of water with half a cup of white vinegar. Let the toys soak in the solution for at least an hour. Once the mold has loosened, scrub them clean. Leave them to dry and if they still smell of vinegar, rinse them before returning them to your child.

Depression is more likely to cause cardiac arrest than high blood pressure

Is depression just as bad for your heart as obesity and high blood pressure?

New research from a 10-year German study suggests so, asserting that depression causes 15 percent of cardiac arrests. To put this in context, 21 percent of heart attacks are caused by obesity, and 8.4 percent by high blood pressure.

More: How birth control may be affecting your sleep

According to the World Health Organization, depression affects around 350 million people worldwide. And while we shouldn't have to establish a link to cardiac arrest to make people take mental illness seriously, this new research adds weight to the argument that depression is (for some people) just as much of a physical illness as a mental one.

How did the researchers arrive at this conclusion? Over the 10-year period, a team from the Technical University of Munich, led by Professor Karl-Heinz Ladwig, analyzed data from 3,428 male patients aged between 45 and 74 years old. They assessed the impact of depression on the heart compared with the four most common risk factors: obesity, smoking, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Their results showed that depression was the root cause for 15 percent of the deaths (557 people died during the course of the study.)

Further research is required to determine how much of this is down to physiological factors such as increased stress hormones (which may increase plaque formation in the arteries), higher levels of cortisol and higher glucose levels and an increase the production of free radicals and fatty acids, which damage the lining of the blood vessels.

The study acknowledges that cardiac arrest may also be the result of the poor lifestyle choices people with depression may make, for example alcohol and drug use, smoking, a poor diet and lack of exercise.

"The question now is, what is the relationship between depression and other risk factors like tobacco smoke, high cholesterol levels, obesity or hypertension? How big a role does each factor play?" Professor Ladwig said in a press release from the research center.

8 ways Season 6 of Grimm is basically Harry Potter

$

Despite this being the last season of NBC's Grimm, there are so many amazing elements coming out of it. For example, Season 6 is basically Harry Potter. Yes, that's correct. Grimm = Harry Potter.

More: Grimm: 5 things Nick and Monroe's Black Forest discovery could mean

If you consider yourself a huge fan of both Grimm and HP, then you have most certainly noticed just how much the drama is like the famed book and movie franchise. We're only two episodes into the new season and there have already been so many similarities.

Who knows if Grimm will continue down the Harry Potter route, but we certainly hope it does. There's no doubt the show stands out in its own way, but it's hard to ignore the commonalities shared. With that said, take a look for yourself.

1. The Stick

Grimm's stick and Harry Potter's elder wand
Image: NBC, Warner Bros.

The mysterious healing stick Nick has his hands on absolutely resembles the Elder Wand. Both are beyond powerful and here's hoping the stick is once again hidden far away from Nick and anyone else who knows about it. It's power is all-consuming, which isn't a good thing. Maybe the stick should just be broken in half like the Elder Wand?

2. The Stick's Effect

Nick Burkhardt and Ron Weasley

As stated above, the stick has a ton of power. In Season 6, Episode 2, Nick started showcasing a dangerous connection to the stick. He can't seem to stay away from it. That sure sounds like when the horcrux began taking its toll on Ron and Harry. Fans know how that all played out, so let's hope Nick can keep his distance and use the stick responsibly.

3. Evil Renard

Sean Renard and Voldemort
Image: NBC, Warner Bros.

Renard is now pretty evil and also the villain of Grimm. He definitely resembles You-Know-Who. His end goal is to take down Nick, which is like Voldemort going after Harry. So far, Renard doesn't seem to be as dark and terrifying as Voldemort, but he could easily go down that road.

4. The Cloth

Grimm cloth and Marauders Map
Image: NBC, Warner Bros.

The cloth wrapped around the stick is giving us vibes of the Marauder's Map. They're both magical, have interesting symbols and even sometimes invisible to certain individuals. To learn more about the cloth, maybe they need to say, "I solemnly swear I am up to no good," and they'll figure out its true purpose.

5. Transformation

Grimm Renard, Harry Potter polyjuice
Image: NBC, Warner Bros.

Grimm characters turning into other people isn't something new, but in Season 6, it sure looks like Nick is going to turn into Renard (above). That sure is an awful lot like whenever any Harry Potter character drank polyjuice potion and turned into someone else. The only major difference here is that the process on Grimm seems to be more painful.

6. Trust Me Knot

Grimm's trust me knot, Harry Potter's unbreakable vow
Image: NBC, Warner Bros.

In the second episode of the final season, Adalind performed a "Trust Me Knot" spell, aka a blood oath, binding Renard and Nick to one another. If one or the other didn't follow through with the terms, then they would die. In Harry Potter, there is the Unbreakable Vow, which involves two individuals making an oath to one another. Like the Trust Me Knot, if either of them breaks the vow, then they will die.

7. The Tunnels

Grimm Tunnels, Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets
Image: NBC, Warner Bros.

Every time Nick and his friend enter the tunnels underneath his loft, does anyone else think of the Chamber of Secrets? They're both dark, filled with the unknown and a map is needed to help people get around.

8. Diana

Grimm's Diana, Harry Potter
Image: NBC, Warner Bros.

There is still a lot unknown about Diana, but one thing remains certain. She resembles Harry Potter in many ways. They are both powerful, not to be messed with, magical and hold the key to many unsolved mysteries. Who knows if Diana will end up saving the day like Harry, but there's a chance.

We told you Grimm is just like Harry Potter, so you should probably most definitely check it out when it airs Fridays at 8/7c on NBC.

Meryl Streep is doing another thing that's probably going to piss off Donald Trump, only this time, she brought backup.

More: Here’s why Planned Parenthood is important to moms

Streep is one of a long list of celebs who took part in creating a quick history video about how Planned Parenthood came to be. At just shy of 7 minutes long, it's a great watch for taking a break at work today, and you'll learn a ton. Trust.

Streep was joined by Lena Dunham, America Ferrera, Mindy Kaling, Jennifer Lawrence, Hari Nef, Andrew Rannells, Cecile Richards, Gina Rodriguez, Amy Schumer, Tessa Thompson, Constance Wu and Sasheer Zamata to make the video. It was directed by Dunham, and produced by Jenni Konner, who has worked with Dunhame for years on her series Girls. Fun.'s Jack Antanoff and J.J. Abrams made the music.

More: Celebrities speak out for Planned Parenthood

What's especially great about this video is that it doesn't shy away from the uglier parts of Planned Parenthood's history, like when founder Margaret Sanger aligned herself with the eugenics movement. It also doesn't worry about getting a little braggy about Planned Parenthood's massive accomplishments and its goal to make sure reproductive healthcare stays safe and accessible for all people.

As Republican lawmakers are working hard to repeal the Affordable Care Act and strip federal funding from Planned Parenthood, reproductive healthcare is facing more opposition than it has in a decade. Videos like this one, that highlight the important work Planned Parenthood does to provide safe, affordable care to people from all backgrounds, are going to become more and more important as the fight continues.

Meet the politician who ‘loves this new world' where he can pinch a colleague’s crotch

$

Because apparently some people still need a reminder, it is not OK to grab another person by the genitals without their consent.

At this stage, you’d think that we’ve moved passed this, but last week a Republican politician from Connecticut was arrested for calling a woman a “lazy, bloodsucking union employee” and then allegedly reaching between her legs and pinching her crotch.

More: Maybe parents can put an end to sexual assault after all

The politician in question, Christopher von Keyserling, 71, has served on the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting board since 1985 according to News 12 Connecticut.

If we as a society have learned anything from the October release of the 2005 Access Hollywood tape starring Donald Trump and featuring Billy Bush, it’s that a man can openly brag about sexually assaulting women and not only get away with it, but go on to be president of the United States.

Like other misogynists, von Keyserling may feel emboldened by the Trump-era pivot back to more of a widespread acceptance of violating women’s bodily autonomy.

According to the Greenwich Daily Voice, pre-vag grab, von Keyserling discussed politics with the 57-year-old woman, and she told him that “it was a new world politically” and that he had to educate his fellow politicians, the warrant said.

More: If you read one thing today, make it Viola Davis' speech about surviving sexual assault

To which he allegedly replied: “I love this new world, I no longer have to be politically correct,” according to the warrant.

She responded by saying that if he was “proud of that I can’t help you,” at which point he called her a “lazy, bloodsucking union employee,” the warrant read. She left the room, he followed her, then he allegedly “pinched her groin area” as she went to exit the room again. The woman threatened to punch him if he ever did that again, and then moved forward with her complaint against von Keyserling.

She said that she had heard of von Keyserling acting similarly toward other employees and referring to the incident of sexual assault as a “joke” so she felt obligated to file a complaint in order to prevent this from happening to other women, according to the warrant.

Phil Russell, von Keyserling’s attorney referred to the sex crime as a “misunderstanding,” saying that his client “playfully gave a lady who he knew for 30 years a pinch” and yet “somehow, everybody’s wringing their hands and carrying on that this is a crime, and it just isn’t.”

Except that it definitely is.

Deploying a favorite technique of sexual assaulters, von Keyserling allegedly told the woman that “it would be your word against mine and nobody will believe you.” While he does have a point regarding people traditionally not believing women who have been attacked, it won’t cut it this time: Police said that video footage from a surveillance camera operating the day of the alleged incident is consistent with the sequence of events described by the woman.

Katherine Heigl has a baby boy, and we're ready to be happy for her

Things are coming up roses — and diapers — for Katherine Heigl these days, and we’re glad to hear it.

Heigl gave birth to her baby boy, Joshua Bishop, in December 2016. The little guy has two big sisters: Heigl and her husband Josh Kelley adopted daughters Naleigh and Adelaide in 2009 and 2012, respectively.

Motherhood seems to suit Heigl, who grooves on sharing cute photos of her family on Instagram and posting on her lifestyle blog, Heavenly Days. (Katie, next time you start a lifestyle blog, maybe let us name it.) She’s also starring in a new legal drama, Doubt, on CBS that's generating a good bit of positive buzz. All of this has us asking the most important question: Is it time to ditch the grudge that everyone's been holding against her?

More: Katherine Heigl is basically apologizing for all the drama she's caused in her career

We can barely remember what Heigl-gate was all about. Totally kidding! We remember everything. Heigl infamously withdrew from the 2008 Emmy race because she didn’t think writer Shonda Rhimes’ material on Grey’s Anatomy was enough to “warrant an Emmy nomination.” Oof. (Again: Katie? Next time, CALL US BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING.)

Needless to say, Heigl's stone-cold rejection of her Emmy nomination did not go over well with Rhimes or the rest of the Grey’s cast. (Cue a set full of Grumpy Cat faces.)

Oh, and then there was that other thing. You may recall that Heigl also made some less-than-flattering remarks to Vanity Fair about Judd Apatow’s film Knocked Up, calling it sexist and saying that the script “painted the women as shrews, humorless and uptight.” We kind of think that was a fair assessment, actually. But the statement sealed her reputation as a difficult actor in entertainment circles, and just like that — boom — Heigl found herself on the extreme outs with Hollywood. Like, extreme.

Heigl has said that she apologized directly to Rhimes for her Emmy comments and that she wished she had just kept her mouth shut. Understandably, all the drama, the blacklisting and the nasty comments took their toll on Heigl, who eventually started therapy to try to shake it off, Tay-Tay-style.

“I was not handling it well. I was feeling completely like the biggest piece of shit on the bottom of your shoe," said Heigl. "I was really struggling with it and how to not take it all personally and not to feel that there’s something really deeply wrong with me.”

More: Why I don't think Katherine Heigl owes anyone an apology

For the record? We think there should be a statute of limitations on everyone hating you because you said something dumb. She said what was on her mind, she said she was sorry and she cried a lot in therapy. If that's not relatable, we don't know what is. Therefore: We hereby declare this Forgive Katherine Heigl Day. You're absolved, Katie. Mazel tov on the beautiful family, BTW.
