Leggo your waffles, because there's a Kellogg Eggo recall

0
0

Welp, I fed my son a waffle this morning only to find out there's a massive waffle recall in effect. Kellogg is recalling 10,000 cases of its Eggo waffles in 25 states due to possible listeria contamination.

This isn't the company's first recall this year: Big ol' Kellogg recall could send you running for your kids' lunchboxes.

This is specifically for its Nutri-grain whole-wheat waffles. No other products are involved in the recall at this time, and no waffle-related illnesses have been reported so far. The recall was issued following routine testing.

More: Why all those huge food recalls are actually good news

The states involved in the recall are scattered throughout the continental U.S., so to find out if your state is involved and for details on the UPC code and best-by date, please see Kellogg's recall notice online. For questions, call 1-800-962-1413, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. ET.

The good news is, I buy a different brand of waffles (Van's). The bad news is, most people go with the Eggo, so check your freezers.

Bachelorette Emily Maynard Johnson's baby name keeps it in the family

Baby No. 3 has arrived for lifestyle blogger and former Bachelor winner and Bachelorette Emily Maynard Johnson.

More: Bizarre law just made it illegal to change a baby's diaper

Gibson Kyle Johnson was born Sept. 16 in North Carolina to Maynard Johnson and her husband, Tyler Johnson. He joins big brother Jennings Tyler, 14 months old, and big sister Ricki, Maynard Johnson's 11-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

Gibson means "son of Gilbert" and is an important name in Maynard Johnson's family. It's her own middle name, her mother's maiden name and also the name of a town in the couple's home state of North Carolina.

It's much more common as a surname, of course, but there's definitely a growing trend for last names as first names. Other celebrity offspring who've been given surnames as firsts include David and Victoria Beckham's son Cruz, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's daughter Monroe, Jackson Rathbone's daughter Presley, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's daughter Harlow and Kate Hudson's son Ryder.

Maynard Johnson announced her happy news on Instagram with a cute family photo, writing, "Ricki and I are officially outnumbered!"

When she announced her third pregnancy in March, the reality TV star described herself as "a glutton for punishment" for conceiving again so soon after having Jennings. "I guess I should’ve read that part in the baby handbook that says you’re super fertile after giving birth, huh?" she blogged.

After accepting a proposal from Brad Womack on The Bachelor, the engagement soon ended, and Maynard Johnson went on to star as The Bachelorette, where she became engaged to Jef Holm. They split in October 2012 after six months, and Maynard Johnson went on to date Johnson, who she actually knew from way before she became a reality TV favorite. The couple married in June 2014.

We bet Lionel Richie is rejoicing over Justin Bieber's relationship news

Justin Bieber and Sofia Richie's romance has come to an end, and we've got to say, we're actually pretty surprised.

More: Justin Bieber's fans were completely out of line for hating on his new girlfriend

Bieber genuinely seemed to be invested in his relationship with Richie: He invited her to jet around the world with him (including trips to Japan and Mexico, where she celebrated her 18th birthday); he was more than happy to post photos of her on Instagram, and even took a mini social media break to defend her honor. So, the reports claiming that the couple have since split are a little unexpected. However, according to an E! News source, we should all remember that, "They were never officially together, but more casual hanging out and having fun."

Bieber and Richie didn't try to hide their affections for each other, but their passion could actually have been their downfall, at least according to a source, who told E! News that their romance "was super-hot and heavy, and because Justin doesn't want a relationship right now, he wanted to cool things down." The source added that "it wasn't an intentional cool-off," and it "just sort of happened on its own."

Of course, we didn't exactly expect these two to get hitched or anything (and Lionel Richie is probably rejoicing that his teenage daughter is single), but Sofia's earlier comments about Bieber did suggest that they had a serious connection.

"We have a special relationship," she said during an interview with Billboard, adding, "Justin is very easy to talk to, and that's hard to find with people in Los Angeles." Well, maybe that connection will translate into a friendship in the future?

Vegan spinach and mushroom pizza that doesn't skimp on the gooey stuff

If you are human, you like pizza. But some humans are sensitive to dairy, which can sometimes make eating the world's most delicious food a little less enjoyable. If you're craving a slice but don't want to have your tummy turning, we found this delicious recipe from Kathryn Kellinger's Let's Make Pizza! cookbook that uses vegan and dairy-free cheese — just as good as the regular stuff. (The pizza cookbook is loaded with meat and cheese-lover's pizza recipes as well, so it's for everyone.)

More: 10 times this vegan fried 'chicken' hack totally blew our minds

Kellinger writes that pizza doesn't necessarily have to have cheese, but this vegan pie is for those people who crave something creamy with their veggies.

More: 27 insanely good vegan pasta recipes you'll make again and again

Vegan spinach and mushroom pizza

From Let's Make Pizza!

If I'm making a vegan pizza, I'm happy to skip the cheese entirely, as vegetable toppings can be fully magnificent on their own. For others, the need for cheese can run deep. This pizza joins the melt of vegan mozzarella and the taste and texture of cashew cheese for the best of both worlds: meltability and a rich, fat-filled flavor. The onions go on raw, charring in the oven to provide a little peppery bite.

Makes 2 (12- to 14-inch) pizzas or 4 personal pizzas

Ingredients:

  • Cornmeal or flour for dusting
  • 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided, plus more for brushing
  • 2 cups sliced cremini mushrooms (baby bellas)
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 4 cups baby spinach, stems removed
  • Pizza dough
  • 1 cup pizza sauce
  • 1/2 cup grated vegan mozzarella (may substitute cheddar cheese)
  • 1/2 cup cashew cheese or other nut-based dairy-free cheese
  • 1/4 cup sliced black olives
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, sliced thin

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven and pizza stone (if using) to 500 degrees F. Dust a pizza peel with cornmeal (if using pizza stone), or brush two baking sheets with olive oil.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil until it shimmers. Add the mushrooms and salt, and let the mushrooms sit undisturbed for 2 minutes. Give the pan a shake and continue cooking for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms have taken color but are still firm and vibrant. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the mushrooms to a medium bowl.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the skillet, then add the garlic and red pepper flakes. Swirl the skillet to flavor the oil, then add the spinach. Use tongs to turn the spinach, watching it decrease in volume. Cook the spinach for 2 to 3 minutes until it's wilted but still has structure. Remove the skillet from the heat.
  4. Roll out one of the dough balls to the desired size, and place it on the pizza peel (if using a pizza stone) or on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Leaving a 1-inch border, spoon half of the sauce onto the dough, spreading it evenly. Top with half of the vegan mozzarella and cashew cheese. Scatter half of the spinach and mushrooms over the pizza, followed by half of the black olives and sliced onions.
  6. Transfer the pizza to the hot pizza stone or oven rack, and bake until the crust is golden and the cheese has melted, 5 to 7 minutes on the pizza stone or 7 to 10 minutes on the baking sheet.
  7. Remove the pizza from the oven and transfer it to a cutting board. Let it rest for 5 minutes. Slice and serve.
  8. Repeat with the remaining dough ball and toppings.

EXCLUSIVE: Now you can watch Zac Efron & Adam DeVine ugly cry for a solid minute

Zac Efron and Adam DeVine are so stinkin' cute you'd never expect to see their names in the same sentence with the word ugly — but good god can these boys ugly cry.

In an exclusive clip from the extended scenes in the bonus features of Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates, Efron and DeVine breakdown into a disgusting heap of blubbering tears after causing the cancellation of the wedding of their sister, Jeanie Stangle.

"We got selfish, we got distracted," says Efron as Dave Stangle to DeVine as his brother, Mike Stangle. "I don't think we were #DoingItForJeanie at all."

More: Someone tell Taylor Swift we had dibs on Zac Efron first

"F***! Our little sister! Our little Jeanie beanie weenie," Dave exclaims before choking up.

Watch the exchange at your own risk. Be warned: There is some serious snot involved.

Major props to DeVine and Efron for pulling off this scene with actual tears. It took some real discipline to film that scene without breaking out in hysterical laughter.

Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates — which is now out on Digital HD and on Blu-ray, with 4K Ultra HD and DVD coming out on Sept. 27 — is the best gross-out comedy since Van Wilder.

More: Just so you know, Simone Biles finally got that kiss from Zac Efron

Here's what DeVine had to say about it: "Bring a nose plug because people are saying that they are SHITTING their pants from laughter. Personally I'm like control your bowels but I'm happy people are liking it," he wrote on Instagram.

Seriously, though, this movie is golden. In addition to DeVine and Efron, it also stars Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick — and you can't beat that with a stick.

John Stamos loved every second of getting naked for his Scream Queens debut

If being giddily excited to see John Stamos take a shower is wrong, then we don't want to be right.

Stamos has been hyping up his steamy shower scene in Season 2 of Scream Queens, and now that the season premiere is upon us, we're pretty much bubbling over with excitement.

And apparently, so is he.

John Stamos Instagram

Besides posting unabashedly sexy photos on social media, Stamos also recently talked about how much he enjoyed stripping down for the show — even though his costar, Taylor Lautner, got to remain fully clothed.

More: John Stamos sends a big F-you to Fox after Grandfathered cancellation

"The first script there was a locker scene, where I took my shirt off and changed it real fast and he [Lautner] had a whole shirt-off scene. Somehow his got rewritten, where he’s wearing this kind of stuff,” Stamos said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, referring to Lautner's modest outfit. "And then mine turned into a big shower scene, where it’s slow motion with the sponge and water. I felt used and I loved it. So that was my first week of work there."

Scream Queens veteran Lea Michele was also on hand at the EW interview and jumped in with her approval of Stamos strip-down, as well.

"Well, it’s about time, because you know it’s the girls all the time, so let’s put the guys to work," said Michele.

More: Wait, were John Stamos and Ashley Benson ever really a thing?

"Well, it’s Taylor’s turn next," Stamos answered — and we're gonna go ahead and second that motion.

Stamos was so amped for his big scene, that he even tried to get none other than Jamie Lee Curtis in on the action.

How to break your child's soda habit

0
0

There's no denying that sodas are addictive. It’s hard to resist that deliciously sweet fizziness.

Although it tastes good and can give you an extra energy boost, sodas offer no nutritional value whatsoever. Studies have shown that its consumption is linked with Type 2 diabetes and obesity, and it may be bad for growing bones.

It's also horrible for teeth. The sugar in soda mixes with the saliva in your mouth to form acids that weaken tooth enamel and may lead to decay.

So you have a kid that’s addicted to soda? The good news is that it's possible to break the habit, but it won’t be easy or quick. Here are a few ways to help break your child’s soda habit.

Educate

It's time for a talk about healthy choices, mama. All your kids probably know is that soda tastes good, which is why it's their favorite drink to reach for. While that may be true, it's important to let them know that's it's not the healthiest beverage choice, and there are lots of alternatives out there — that they'll find just as tasty.

Make it a family affair

No soda for kids doesn’t mean a free pass for Mom and Dad. You can control what comes in the home; make cutting a soda habit a family affair. The easiest way to break a habit is to have everyone on board. Kids will follow by example. If they see their parents opting for healthy drinks, they will be sure to follow. Plus, not having soda in the house at all makes it less tempting. Also, when you are eating out, don't order it. Your kids will see you making healthy choices, and they will too.

More: Kids are eating their weight in sugar, and a new app could help

Wean slowly

Like any addiction, cold turkey may not work for everyone, especially kids. If they are used to the caffeine and sugar boost from their favorite soft drink, then stopping it all at once can lead to crankiness and caffeine withdrawal symptoms. Wean them slowly. Start by limiting when they can have soda. Let them have it only with certain meals. Reducing soda intake slowly will help you get the sugar and caffeine withdrawal under control. Just like when you have to break your baby’s Binky or thumb-sucking habit, patience and consistency work best.

Soda alternatives

When you start to wean, try substituting with natural sodas. Natural sodas have fewer artificial ingredients. They don’t contain high-fructose corn syrup and generally contain less sugar than the big brands do. They’re an overall healthier choice, especially if you’re drinking them only occasionally. Diet sodas, however, are not a healthier option. Studies have shown that drinking diet soda actually leads to weight gain. Better yet, try introducing your kids to fruit-infused water. Add citrus slices, berries, watermelon or fresh mint to a pitcher of water, and keep it in the refrigerator. Encourage your kids to drink a glass of the fruit-infused water first, before they have a soda. Keep in mind, though, that with fruit you're still at risk for acid erosion, and consider drinking through a straw to help protect your teeth. Balance out that healthier choice by using a toothpaste that protects their enamel.

Praise

Once you see that your kids are putting forth a good effort to reduce their soda consumption, remember to praise them. Kids like to know when they are doing a good job. Offer to take them someplace special, or give them one-on-one time doing something they like. A little acknowledgment for a job well done goes a long way.

More: 20 crazy ways we show love to our kids

Special occasions

Finally, if your kids still can’t completely kick the soda habit, it’s all right to let them have it in moderation. Limit their soda intake to very special occasions. Honestly, you may be able to control the soda intake in your home, but what if they are at a birthday party or with friend at a movie? Hopefully as they grow older, they will make responsible decisions for their health. Until then, a soda every once in a while won’t ruin all your efforts. Keeping them few and far between will help you keep them on track.

Trevor Walker is no saint, but Kelley Johnson was out of line on Below Deck

0
0

Bravo has had its fair share of bossy reality TV stars in recent years, but who would have thought that a new control freak would emerge on a show like Below Deck? What should be an enjoyable experience as a crew member on a luxury yacht is anything but that for bosun Kelley Johnson, who treats the whole ordeal as though he's commanding Marines in the Middle East.

More: Trevor Walker and Kelley Johnson need to get it together on Below Deck

After last week's debacle involving deckhands Trevor Walker and Nico Scholley, it was up to Johnson to smooth things over. Instead, Johnson "killed a mosquito with an axe" by making a huge deal out of two guys just blowing off steam.

Kelley Johnson
Image: Bravo

Things would have been fine if Johnson had just let sleeping dogs lie, but he escalated the situation the next morning by stripping Walker of his senior deckhand position and threatening to kick him off the boat if he acted up again.

More: 7 reasons Chef Ben Robinson makes the Below Deck shows worth watching

While Walker has proven to be more than a handful (especially after yet another drunken lapse in judgment this week left him slurring and stammering his speech), he doesn't deserve to be completely dismissed by Johnson just yet. After all, Johnson himself complained about a charter being shorthanded if he had to let Walker go.

Kelley Johnson
Image: Bravo

With Walker being in no rush to help out and Johnson not wanting his help in the first place, it was up to Johnson and Scholly to set up an incredibly annoying inflatable pool for the charter guests. Things would have been a lot easier if Walker had been around to lend a hand. Johnson's sarcastic comment about the guests only using the pool for five minutes proves that he's not exactly having a lot of fun in his role either.

More: Trevor Walker is Below Deck's best villain yet

We've seen Johnson show his softer side, especially during the scene in which he shared a laugh over the hot tub incident with his sister. And we know he thinks his other two deckhands are great. So what's keeping him from smoothing things over with Walker and having a full crew of happy, reliable workers? It just might be that Marine Corps mentality that Johnson needs to throw overboard.

What do you think of Kelley Johnson's management style on Below Deck? Did Trevor Walker deserve that demotion? Comment and share your opinion below.

Child star Billy Gilman is ready to make his comeback on The Voice

0
0

Big names frequently appear on The Voice, but typically, these stars take the stage for guest performances and nothing else. This time, however, a familiar face is stepping into the spotlight in hopes of reigniting his already impressive career. He looks a bit different these days, but former child star Billy Gilman is as charming as ever. Believe it or not, he's 28 years old and ready to make his mark not as a child star but as a full-grown, sophisticated singer.

More: Ladies, we need to talk about Alicia Keys' The Voice debut

Shattering that child star perception can be tricky (as countless musicians have discovered over the years), especially after suffering the natural vocal changes that accompany puberty. Prior to his performance on tonight's episode of The Voice, Gilman offered some insight into the struggles he's faced and how he's dealt with multiple personal and professional setbacks.

Billy Gilman
Image: NBC

Clearly, Gilman's goal is to use The Voice as a launchpad for his big comeback. It's actually a really smart idea; waltzing into a new record deal is easier said than done, but he'll be a lot more convincing with a larger (and younger) fan base and, better yet, a reality TV victory. Although people are already claiming that he has an advantage over the other contestants, I'm convinced that he'll have to work super hard to prove that he's not just a has-been. After tonight's episode, he's well on his way.

More: Miley Cyrus' outfits aren't the point of The Voice

The first step to a reality TV-based career comeback, of course, is impressing the coaches. Before they turned their big red chairs, they had no idea that the guy on stage was once a country music sensation. They might not have recognized his voice or his face, but they did recognize his name!

Billy Gilman
Image: NBC

The judges were full of praise for Gilman and his rendition of Adele's "When We Were Young." Adam Levine — who was the first to turn around — claimed that Gilman could "be the guy" to win the entire season. Levine's predictions frequently prove correct, so I will not be at all surprised if Gilman walks away with a Season 11 victory. If he does, however, it won't just be the result of his childhood fame — he'll earn that victory with his spectacular voice and charming personality.

Counting On needs more appearances from Flame

Courting and engagement and babies, oh my! While the Duggar gals seem like lovely people, there's only so much of their antics I can take week after week. Perhaps there is something to be said for the petty drama of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and the Real Housewives after all.

More: Counting On reveals Jeremy Vuolo had a bad-boy phase

Thankfully, after several weeks of hearing the word "babe" way more than I ever anticipated on a Duggar show, Counting On is exploring other themes. Yes, Jinger and Jeremy continue to take center stage, but there's somebody far more interesting entering the picture: a rapper!

Duggars
Image: TLC

Yes, Flame is a Christian rapper, but aside from his faith, he has little in common with the Duggars. He's urban, he's overcome poverty, and — elephant in the room — he's black. This is not the first time the Duggars have spent time with black people, but it does appear to be the first time most of them have encountered rap, as evidenced by their laughable attempts at defining the music genre last season.

More: Jim Bob Duggar went too far when grilling Jeremy Vuolo

The story line with Flame seemed very contrived, as is true of many plotlines on this show. But contrived or not, it was interesting. I already knew how Ben and Jessa Seewald (and the adorable little Spurgeon) would behave around Flame after seeing him last season, but I was eager to see other members of the Duggar clan interact with him as well.

Flame on Counting On
Image: TLC

Although Flame predicted a "culture clash," things went well, for the most part. He had to change his outfit and help the Duggar menfolk outside. They managed to avoid saying anything overly offensive, but did seem a bit patronizing at times. Ultimately, he decided that, while there are merits to the Duggar approach to life, he prefers living in the city.

More: The Duggars aren't amused by Jinger's overboard infatuation

Even more interesting than Flame's appearance on Counting On? The response he generated on Twitter. Viewers raved about the rapper, with a few going so far as to ship him with Jana... and Jessa!

Flame and Jana tweet

Flame and Jana tweet

I very much doubt a Flame courtship is in Counting On's future, but that would be interesting. Until then, I'm just glad to see something, anything, that even slightly alters the Duggar family's very limited worldview.

All of our Stranger Things/Parks and Rec crossover dreams just came true

0

Of all the crazy theories to come out of the Netflix sensation Stranger Things, the hypothesis that the character Steve Harrington is actually the father of Parks and Recreation's Jean-Ralphio Saperstein seemed to be the most far-fetched.

I mean, Stranger Things is a spooky, cerebral science-fiction thriller produced by Netflix, whereas Parks and Rec was a silly sitcom on NBC. The two shows are worlds apart — basically, in Stranger Things speak, Parks and Rec would exist in our dimension, while Stranger Things would be in the Upside Down. It seems ridiculous to believe that the two could possibly be connected.

In case you missed it, the fan theory postures that Jean-Ralphio is the spawn of Steve because of Steve's age around the time Jean-Ralphio would have been born, as well as the striking resemblance between the two.

More: The Stranger Things kids saved the 2016 Emmys with their nonstop coolness

In an appearance on The Late Late Show, Ben Schwartz, the actor who portrayed Jean-Ralphio, joked that Steve and Stranger Things' Nancy were, indeed, Jean-Ralphio's parents, but it didn't really seem like he was serious.

Also, the creator of Parks and Rec tweeted this:

So, really, it seemed like the theory was way off base and one big joke. Until now.

Schwartz once again gave credence to the theory that Jean-Ralphio, Steve and Nancy are swimming in the same gene pool with a series of Instagram posts that are seriously toying with our emotions.

Check it out.

Forget about Jean-Ralphio and Steve being related, we're now completely convinced that Schwartz and Joe Keery (the actor who plays Steve) are brothers. They're, like, identical.

But, sadly, we still kinda get the feeling Schwartz is taking the piss out of us. We're not going to be 100 percent confident this theory is true until we see Jean-Ralphio show up in Stranger Things seasons 2 through 100.

How about you? Do you think there is a real link between Stranger Things and Parks and Rec?

Unique baby names for boys and girls we wish we'd thought of first

0

When it comes to baby naming styles, we'd like to point out that there's a big (huge) difference between baby names that are trendy and unique. Trendy names are fun, but they've also been the source of baby naming regret when parents choose a name that's a little too "out there." According to a recent MumsNet survey in the UK, up to 18 percent of parents regret the baby name they picked. In some cases, it was because the name was too common, while other parents pegged their regret on a "shift in public perception." Connecting the dots, we can only assume there's a way to choose a baby name that's just right — special enough to be unique, without coming off as a passing trend.

With that in mind, we found more than a few unique or weird baby names destined to be the coolest names in preschool (and beyond). Did you love Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald's choice of Spurgeon for their son while others were raising their eyebrows?

You'd have to pay Bethenny Frankel to get her to LuAnn de Lesseps' wedding

The Real Housewives of New York's Bethenny Frankel and LuAnn de Lesseps are definitely not friends, in fact, their feud has been one of the main storylines of Season 8. But have they since forgiven each other and moved on with their lives?

More: RHONY's LuAnn de Lesseps & Bethenny Frankel need to stop fighting dirty

We'd like to say yes, but the answer is clearly no, as Frankel recently revealed during an interview with People magazine. She said, "I haven't strangled her and I haven't spoken to her, so she's still alive and I hope she is happily engaged. And no I haven't spoken to her."

The feud came about when Frankel told de Lesseps that her fiancé, Tom D'Agostino, Jr., had allegedly made out with a Playboy model at New York's Regency Hotel, just one day before the couple's engagement party — and according to Frankel, the messenger always gets shot.

More: RHONY's LuAnn de Lesseps has shoot-the-messenger syndrome

"In the end, really, because I was the messenger and you know people want to kind of get the stain off of them and just throw it onto someone else. I presented something that represents the truth and LuAnn, like I said, isn't a very good friend of the truth," Frankel explained.

However, things between de Lesseps and D'Agostino, Jr. continue to blossom, and the pair are all set to marry on Dec. 31, even if Frankel won't be celebrating their happiness. Well, that's not entirely true, there is a chance that Frankel would attend the nuptials, but only if her condition was met: "I would go to LuAnn's for a very steep appearance fee."

More: The hate Bethenny Frankel is getting on Instagram is the worst we've ever seen

Yep, we don't see that happening, and really, we don't think Frankel would be too welcome at the ceremony anyway.

Do girls need a board game to teach them about periods?

Do young girls really need a board game to teach them about periods? Absolutely, say Rhode Island School of Design students Daniela Gilsanz, 22, and Ryan Murphy, 23.

More: 8 big reasons your period's gone MIA

Gilsanz and Murphy created The Period Game for their 2014 Design and Play class and are now looking for the backing they need to get it into the homes of tweens and teens.

We know — it's hardly The Game of Life or Electronic Dream Phone, but let's give it a second.

The whole point of the game is to teach young girls about periods in a different way. Or to provide a way to teach them in the first place, because sometimes it just doesn't happen. Which is crazy, considering the average woman endures around 456 periods in her lifetime (that's roughly 2,280 days — or 6.25 years — on her period).

When I got my period at 13, my mum gave me a sanitary pad and explained how to use it, but that was pretty much it. We got zero period education at school. It really wasn't until I left home and went to university that I understood what periods were all about — why we have them and what to expect from them.

It definitely shouldn't be like this, and it's very different for girls nowadays thanks to the wealth of information at their web-surfing fingertips — and to innovators like Gilsanz and Murphy, who devote time and energy to finding creative ways to make learning and talking about menstruation less awkward.

More: Periods don't stop women from becoming leaders — negative stereotypes do

While there's still a massive, crazy stigma around periods, times are changing — slowly, but changing nonetheless. From the recent Bodyform ad "Trapeze," the first ever to feature a real sanitary towel, to Olympic swimmer Fu Yuanhui talking about her period during a live TV broadcast, there are people and companies trying to put an end to menstruation-shaming.

Some 25 years after I failed to get any education on periods whatsoever, the school my teenage niece attends teaches girls and boys about menstruation as part of their sex ed classes. My niece was happy to discuss periods with me — something that would have made me die inside at her age. But when I asked her if she'd want to spend time playing The Period Game? "Nah," she said. "I'd rather play Monopoly."

So maybe The Period Game isn't for everyone. But if it gets us talking about and normalizing periods, we've gotta get behind it.

Maybe parents can put an end to sexual assault after all

There are few things scarier for a parent to talk to their kids about than rape. It's violent. It's dehumanizing. It's everything we want to protect our kids from. And yet something as simple as how you're talking to your kids could be making the problem that much worse.

We're now living in a country where an estimated 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted by the age of 18. Every two minutes, another American is sexually assaulted. And our college kids are at a heightened risk — 11.2 percent of all students (undergrad and graduate school) experience rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence or incapacitation.

And every day, our kids hear excuses for the perpetrators, accusations hailed at the victims.

What were you wearing that night?

She's such a tease.

And on it goes. That's why SheKnows' Hatch program has partnered with the Ad Council to take a look at the conversations we're having with our kids, to really look at what it is our kids hear day in and day out.

It's On Us

It's On Us

Moms, Dads: It's on us to change the conversation. It's on us to tell our kids who's really to blame for rape (the rapists) and who's never at fault (the victims). It's on us to talk to our kids in a way that stops rape culture in its tracks and truly protects them.

Stop playing the blame game in Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie's divorce

0

If there's one divorce that we didn't see coming it was Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's. While the world is shocked by the fact that Jolie filed for divorce, we think the reports that have been coming out about what went wrong are extremely insensitive.

More: No one deserves the kind of hate being spewed at Marion Cotillard right now

The decision to divorce was undoubtedly one that Pitt and Jolie did not take likely — even more so because they share six children together — so the last thing that anyone needs is to start discussing who's to blame for the split. Yet that is exactly what has been happening, with a new report suggesting that Jolie's control issues were the cause.

"Angelina [Jolie] was controlling and that too led to the end of her relationship with Brad [Pitt]," a source told HollywoodLife, adding, "She wanted to control every aspect of Brad‘s life and when he ignored her demands, it would drive her mad."

And that's not all, the source also went on to paint Jolie in a very unpleasant light, commenting on how she was wanting to take the lead in all aspects of Pitt's life.

More: A timeline of Brangelina's divorce: Why did Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie split?

"Angelina was frustrated she could not control Brad. She tried to control his friends, who he hung out with, and where he went. Most of all, she wanted to control how he parented their kids," the source told the publication. "She even wanted a say in what roles he took and what projects he chose to put his energy into. She wanted to control his personal life as well as his career. But Brad would agree with her in person and then when she wasn’t around he would do whatever he pleased and when Angelina found out, as she always did, it made her feel frustrated beyond no end [sic]."

Apart from the fact that this source paints Jolie as incredibly needy, demanding and an absolute control freak, it also places the blame of the divorce solely on her shoulders, and do we even need to get into why this is so unfair?

More: Let's stop blaming Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's divorce on the kids

We'd like to remind everyone that it takes two to tango, regardless of the issues this couple had in their marriage — on Monday, Sept. 19, Jolie filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences" — no one should be playing the blame game and trying to find fault. Pitt and Jolie enjoyed more than 12 years of happiness together, and just because it's come to an end now, doesn't give anyone the right to judge the reasons why.

I can't believe Rick Perry survived Week 1 of DWTS

Well, it's the end of Week 1 on Dancing with the Stars, and there have already been some pretty big shockers this season.

More: Dancing with the Stars got scary very quickly for Ryan Lochte

Aside from Ryan Lochte's protesting scare during the first show, tonight's episode saw an unexpected elimination.

I was pretty convinced Rick Perry would get the ax Week 1 of the show, but he's lived to see another week, while The Fosters' Jake T. Austin was sent packing.

My political views aside, Perry wasn't hitting it with his dance steps or his charisma on the stage, and the judges responded accordingly, giving him the lowest scores of the bunch.

More: DWTS literally has the craziest roster of contestants this season

Still, the American public seemed inspired enough to give him a second chance, so it'll be interesting to see how Perry brings it back in Week 2.

Even judge Julianne Hough acknowledged that Perry got lucky having pro Emma Slater as his partner.

“Based on scores, Rick and Emma, they were the lowest. But I think that’s what this competition is about,” Hough said. “I think it also doesn’t hurt that Rick has Emma, who’s pretty fantastic.”

Maybe the sad truth about Perry's survival on the show hinges on the fact that he was memorable for being so bad, while Austin, who fell on the lower end of the middle, was forgotten in the shuffle of other stars.

More: Ryan Lochte wants DWTS to fix his image, but Hope Solo fans aren't having it

So while Perry will dance to see another week, I still maintain that he won't be dancing for long. Though America does love a good comeback story, Perry's already had his chance in politics.

Are you surprised Rick Perry wasn't eliminated on Dancing with the Stars Week 1?

Angelina Jolie's kids are going to be just fine, thank you very much

0

Of all the responses to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's separation, the most ridiculous isn't the slew of Jennifer Aniston-themed memes and GIFs invading my Facebook timeline. I can live with those (although FYI, people — Aniston and Pitt split up 11 years ago; let it go). What's really pissing me off are the comments slating Jolie for doing the wrong thing by her kids.

More: Let's stop blaming Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's divorce on the kids

According to the judgy McJudgers of the internet, Jolie should stay with Pitt because they have six kids together. (I'm not sure whether the number six is significant, but "SIX! SIX!" people are shouting from behind their keypads. Would it be OK for her to file for divorce if they had only one child together? Or two? What about four kids?) These people think Jolie should just put up with whatever isn't working in her marriage — whether it's Pitt's fondness for a spliff at the end of a hard day, his tendency to flip his lid or any of the other unconfirmed "reasons" for their split — because they are parents.

Oh, and some of the commenters haven't got kids and have never been married. Um, sorry not sorry... No children, no opinion.

It's no surprise that so many people (women mainly, sadly) have unearthed their grubby old #TeamAniston T-shirts from 2005. Any excuse to bash Jolie the homewrecker, right? But whatever you may think of her as a wife, as a woman, as a man-eater of the highest order, there's not one shred of evidence that she's not completely devoted to her children.

Why can't we accept that she believes divorce is the best option for her family and is therefore doing the right thing by her kids? Don't all parents try to do just that? We take what life throws at us and do what we think is best for everyone.

More: Here's how moms with 3+ kids actually get things done

The belief that divorce is a one-way ticket to an unhappy childhood needs to be shut down — now. Because it's simply not true. There's a ton of research showing that it's more harmful for kids to grow up in unhappy homes than to see their parents go through divorce, but I don't need to talk about that. I have all the proof I need under my own roof.

I don't have a $400 million fortune and global property empire. I don't, thankfully, have the world's media camped outside my front door (or doors, as the case may be), demanding to know why I'm divorcing my husband. I don't have six kids. But I have two, and just like Jolie, I chose to divorce their dad.

This is not a decision any parent takes lightly. It's huge. And although I know differently now, at the time, I was consumed by guilt that I was in fact wrecking my young kids' lives. They'll hate me forever. They'll hate their dad forever. They'll hate themselves forever. They'll start cutting at 10 and taking drugs at 12 to forget about their broken home. They'll never, ever be able to have a happy, healthy relationship. This was the kind of crap running through my head as I packed up our stuff and prepared to split up our family.

I'm not going to say it was all plain sailing. It was tough — for a long time. But a few years after we split, I can look back and say without a single doubt that I did the right thing for my family. I include my ex-husband in that family, because he's still my kids' dad and always will be. Life's not perfect, but we are — all four of us — for the most part content, happy and secure.

More: It took becoming a stepmom to finally understand my own

The key to not letting divorce ruin your kids' lives is simple: Always put them first. Leave your arguments and resentments and complaints at the door — or at least scream at each other when the kids are someplace else. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have all the money and resources they could possibly need to make their split as pain-free as possible for their six children. So quit hating on this mom for making a difficult decision that could actually turn out to be the best call for her kids.

  • 1/4 cup plus 9 teaspoons milk chocolate chips, divided
  • 1/4 cup white chocolate chips
  • M&M'S

Place the jars into a baking dish, and bake for about 16 minutes or until the cookies are slightly browned.

2. Fill with chocolate chips, and freeze

Place about 1-1/2 teaspoons of milk chocolate chips into each cone, over the cookie. Then carefully insert a lollipop stick into the chocolate and cookie.

Immediately freeze for about an hour or until the chocolate and cookies are set.

3. Cover with melted chocolate

Melt the remaining milk chocolate chips and white chocolate chips separately. (Check out this tutorial on how to melt chocolate.) Hold each cone by the lollipop stick, and coat in melted chocolate. We used a frosting knife to evenly distribute the chocolate.

Decorate the cones, working quickly so the melted chocolate doesn't dry.

Classic American names patriotic parents are going gaga over

What's as American as apple pie? A baby name that hails from the good, ole US of A. When the first settlers arrived several hundred years ago, they brought some solid baby names right along with them. And as pioneers moved through the country and began to blaze new trails, the popularity of these ultra-traditional baby names grew.

If you're looking for a "salt of the earth" name built on hard work, home and patriotism, these early American boy and girl names will deliver.

American names from the 1600s

The legendary ship, the Mayflower, departed English shores in September of 1620. Aboard were 102 passengers, about half of which were known as separatists (or pilgrims) and they arrived in Cape Cod in November. One baby was born during the voyage and received the suitable name Oceanus. The trip was arduous and while only one person died during the voyage, many more died soon after arrival as during the harsh winter they stayed aboard the ship and disease broke out. Names from this time period were often Biblical in origin (as well as what are known as Puritan names) and this trend continued throughout the next few centuries. Here are notable boy and girl names from the passengers of the Mayflower:
