Power-generating snacks that will keep your young athletes running

$

0

Whether you're feeding your own student athlete or it's your week to bring the team snack, it's important to remember that kid athletes have some extra nutritional needs above your average kid's. And most store-bought "healthy" snacks are often hiding a dark secret — they may be packed with sugar, or they may not have enough of the nutrients young athletes need.

According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, "Young athletes need to learn what foods are good for energy, when to eat certain foods, how to eat during an event and when and what to eat to replenish after activity." And the NCAA Sport Science Institute says, "Sensible whole foods and adequate fluids contribute measurably to athletic performance and health, notably before student-athletes' activity and in the recovery periods immediately following intense exercise."

But we don't have to convince you — what you really need are some snack ideas, right? Here's a dozen to keep your kids going through the season.

More: 22 healthy, high-protein snacks you'll actually want to eat

1. Hard-boiled egg and multigrain crackers

A hard-boiled egg is a great source of protein, and a single serving of the right unsweetened multigrain crackers will provide complex carbs. If your kids won't eat plain hard-boiled eggs, you could try deviled eggs.

2. Dried fruit and nuts

On game day, 1/2 cup of dried fruit and 1/2 cup of nuts are great for energy. For additional fuel, you could add string cheese.

3. Half a whole-wheat bagel with jam

Add a schmear of cream cheese or natural peanut, almond or coconut butter if your kids need a little extra energy after a tough practice.

More: After-school snacks your kids can prepare, because they've got hands, right?

4. Yogurt parfait with fresh fruit and honey

If you can get away with it, use a plain (unflavored, unsweetened) full-fat or Greek yogurt. After the game, kids can add a tablespoon or 2 of Grape Nuts, low-sugar granola or rolled oats plus some chopped or puréed fruit.

5. String cheese with nuts

String cheese is packed with protein and calcium. A handful of nuts will up the protein factor and help fill athletes up. If their blood sugar is low after the game, add apple slices or even a healthy cookie.

6. Fruit smoothie

These work for post-game snacks too. Kids probably won't want more to tide them over on non-game days, but if they find that's not enough, try adding some silken tofu or natural peanut butter to the mix. For the ultimate high-protein, nondairy add-in, try Ripple milk or Orgain almond milk.

7. Carrot sticks with hummus and baked pita chips

A serving of each should get them through practice, but adding a handful of grape tomatoes or some celery sticks never hurt anyone.

8. Pretzels and grapes

A serving of pretzels and grapes will keep kids' energy up during the game. Add a few baby carrots and an ounce of cubed cheddar cheese if the snack is after strenuous activity.

9. Popcorn, raisin, dried apricot, peanuts and sunflower seed trail mix

Mix natural popcorn with the other ingredients, and serve a cup of the trail mix before the big game. For extra energy after the game, go with 1-1/2 cups.

10. Peanut butter-banana crackers

Slather multigrain crackers with natural peanut butter, and top it with a slice of banana. If your kids need more, a handful of cubed pineapple is a good complement.

More: 10 wholesome snack ideas with ingredients you don’t have to be ashamed of

11. Granola bars (with a caveat)

Some granola bars have as much sugar as chocolate cake, so look for low-sugar versions with healthy fats (from nuts, seeds and grains), or make your own at home. But even if you make your own, try reducing the amount of sweetener, even if it's maple syrup or honey.

12. Cheerios with milk

A single serving (or individual-size box) should do. Add banana slices for potassium and natural sugar.

Pre-game snacks should be eaten about 60 to 90 minutes before the game. Note that kiddos may also be hungry after games or practice, so these make good post-game snacks when the next meal is still a few hours away.

The America's Got Talent judges owe Tape Face an apology

The judging on America's Got Talent has often been questionable this season. Simon Cowell predictably favors singers, Howie Mandel praises everybody (as always), and even the lovely Mel B and Heidi Klum have had their moments. But everything we've seen thus far from the judges pales in comparison to their behavior tonight, which was unprofessional and unacceptable.

More: America's Got Talent gets too real with crossbow stunt gone wrong

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a fan of Tape Face. I typically love physical comedy, but I don't find his act particularly entertaining. I have no idea why everybody loves him so much and am annoyed that so many better acts have been shoved aside in his favor.

Tape Face
Image: NBC

I might not get the whole appeal of Tape Face, but I do believe that, like all contestants, he deserves a modicum of respect from the judges. Yes, even from Cowell. Unfortunately, respect was in short supply while Tape Face was on stage tonight.

More: Grace VanderWaal's song tactic on America's Got Talent definitely worked

The problems began right after Tape Face's act ended. The judges were asked for feedback and, as expected, Cowell offered up a few harsh observations. He claimed, "I think, like Mel, you have the ability to do something stupid and be interesting at the same time."

AGT judges

OK, that's a fair comment, especially from the notoriously abrasive Cowell. But Mel B took issue with Cowell's comment, and not because she wanted to stick up for Tape Face. She stood up to chastise Cowell, grabbed Klum's drink and proceeded to toss it at her nemesis judge — and at the audience! She apologized to the viewers and then returned to her chief mission of soaking Cowell. Meanwhile, Klum and Mandel were left to discuss the act as best they could.

More: Jon Dorenbos has a future in magic after tonight's episode of America's Got Talent

There's nothing wrong with the judges goofing off, but they definitely crossed the line tonight. They failed to provide any meaningful feedback for Tape Face, who, in my opinion, could clearly use it. They also hogged the spotlight during what was supposed to be the contestant's big moment.

I get that the judges play a huge role in getting viewers to tune in, but I don't want to see them being ridiculous. I want them to give actionable advice based on their years of success in the entertainment industry. And I want them to treat the show's hardworking contestants with the respect they deserve. Apparently, that's too much to ask.

What did you think of the judges' response to Tape Face on America's Got Talent? Comment and share your opinion below.

Starting Sept. 1, Baskin-Robbins is giving summer the send-off it deserves by unleashing their new Dunkin' Donuts ice cream sandwiches upon the world. Pick your jaw up off the floor — you read that right. Dunkin' Donuts made sweet love to Baskin-Robbins and created a food baby.

This means that any hungry soul looking to double down on their ice cream consumption before fall hits (ahem, me) can walk (run?) into Baskin-Robbins, select their favorite ice cream flavor and enjoy it scooped between a powdered Dunkin' Donuts doughnut in the ultimate expression of summer decadence. You can also get your sandwich topped with hot fudge, sprinkles, or any of your other favorites. And since doughnuts are technically breakfast food, who's to say this isn't literally the best-ever way to start your day?

Baskin-Robbins has been seriously upping their game lately. When I was a kid it was just your basic scoop shop, but now they serve up things like Warm Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches, Polar Pizza (dessert pizza topped with ice cream!) and now this glorious brand mashup with its sister chain Dunkin' Donuts.

Summer may almost be over, but there's still time to get your fill of ice cream, and for me that probably means trying at least one totally loaded Dunkin' Donuts ice cream sandwich.

Or you could make your own doughnut ice cream sandwiches because they're so dang easy!

DIY scented candles in the colors and scents you've been dreaming of

$

If you've had it up to here with candle parties, or if you simply can't afford your pricey department store candle habit anymore, we feel you. (Boy, do we feel you.) But contrary to popular belief, living life as a candle lover doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. You can learn how to "hack" your habit and make your own super-yummy-scented candles at home.

Where to begin? Start by following this easy tutorial to learn how to make your own candles. Then you can blend your favorite scents and colors to come up with your own one-of-a-kind candle concoctions. The best part? They're perfect for decorating your own home, and they make beautiful personalized gifts.

How to make scented candles

Supplies:

  • Wax flakes
  • Pre-waxed candle wicks
  • Containers for candles
  • Nontoxic crayon or candle color block
  • Essential oils
  • Glass container
  • Saucepan or pot
  • Skewers or chopsticks
  • Tape
  • Stove
  • Scissors

Directions:

Note: You’ll want to start off by cleaning your glass containers. Using regular dish soap will do the job; just make sure you dry them thoroughly when you’re done.

Step 1: Setting up your wicks

DIY scented candles: Setting up your wicks
Image: Eileen Chow/SheKnows

To set up the candlewicks in your containers, you’ll want to lay the metal piece flat against the bottom. Then, use your chopsticks/skewers to hold up the wicks, and tape the ends of the chopsticks to keep everything in place.

More: 11 hacks to make your home smell fresh and clean

Step 2: Measuring the wax flakes

DIY scented candles: Measuring wax flakes
Image: Eileen Chow/SheKnows

Measure out the amount of candle wax flakes you’ll need for each of your containers. The rule of thumb is two times the amount of wax flakes to fill each container.

Step 3: Melting the wax

DIY scented candles: Melting wax
Image: Eileen Chow/SheKnows

Fill a saucepan with water to about the halfway mark. Place your measured amount of wax flakes in the glass container. Then place the glass container in the saucepan. Be sure the water level is low enough, so it won’t splash into the wax flakes when it starts to boil. Turn your stove on to medium-high, and use a metal spoon to stir occasionally.

Step 4: Adding color to your candles

DIY scented candles: Add color to your candle
Image: Eileen Chow/SheKnows

This is an optional step. Your candles will come out a naturally milky white, but if you’d like to add a little color, you can use a nontoxic crayon or candle color block. I typically use 1/8-inch of red crayon per 16-ounces of wax flakes to get a soft pastel color. Want a brighter color? Use a little bit more, only adding color a bit at a time. Like food coloring, a small amount goes a long way. Simply melt your color along with your wax flakes. Warning: The color will look a lot brighter in the melted mixture but will turn a milky color as it cools.

Next Up: Add scent

{pageBreak}

Step 5: Add scent

Add scent
Image: Eileen Chow/SheKnows

Once all the wax is completely melted, remove the wax mixture from the stove. My rule of thumb is 10 drops of essential oil per 16 ounces of wax. It makes for a moderately scented candle. Use less or more depending on taste, and feel free to experiment and mix oils to create a scent of your own. Add the measured amount of essential oil to your wax mixture and give it a good stir to make sure it’s well mixed.

Step 6: Pouring the wax

DIY scented candles: Pouring wax
Image: Eileen Chow/SheKnows

Make sure your containers are in a good location where they won’t need to be moved for a few hours. Then slowly pour your melted wax mixture into your containers.

Step 7: Setting your candle

Image: Eileen Chow/SheKnows

Allow 3 to 4 hours for your candles to cool and solidify. It’s best to let them solidify at room temperature, so the cooling process is gradual. This prevents cracks in the wax.

What's all this talk about Doris Day saving her son from Charles Manson?

Doris Day followed her motherly intuition back in the '60s and pretty much changed the course of history by doing so, according to a new tell-all book written by Mike Love of the Beach Boys.

In Good Vibrations — which hits stands on Sept. 2 — Love writes about how Day urged her son, the late record producer Terry Melcher, to move out of his Benedict Canyon home in Los Angeles and into a home owned by her after Melcher had angered Charles Manson by refusing to aid him in his music career, according to People magazine.

How dare he, right? From the way Love makes it sound, Manson — who also used to hang with the Beach Boys — might have actually been triggered by Melcher's denial to help him make music.

More: Charles Manson calls off wedding after fiancée's creepy plans revealed

"Manson wouldn't stand for it," Love writes in his book, via People. "Consumed by rage and seeking revenge against a corrupt society, he convinced his followers that the apocalypse was coming in a bloody race war, at the end of which he and his disciples would take over."

Manson had picked Melcher's home to be the first residence stormed by the Manson Family and planned to murder everyone living there in January of 1969, but because of Day's quick thinking, the family ended up killing the occupants of Sharon Tate's home in August of that same year, according to Love.

"Terry, Doris' only child, was extremely close to his mom," Love says in the memoir. "He had told her about Manson — and about some of his scary antics, his brandishing of knives, his zombie followers — and that Manson had been to the house on Cielo and she insisted he move out."

Doris Day and Terry Melcher

"A mother's intuition, perhaps, and it may have saved his life," continues Love.

So basically, if Melcher hadn't told his mom about Manson, he might have been murdered in early '69 — but Tate, her unborn child and the other victims that night in August might have lived, provided that Manson and his family had been arrested after Melcher's hypothetical killing. Trippy.

Turn your dinner leftovers into a lunch you'll be happy to eat

$
0
0

Buying lunch can be expensive, but eating the same thing for lunch that you had for dinner the night before isn't so fun either. So what do you do? I always try to create something new out of my dinner leftovers. I turn steak with chimichurri into a salad or build a fish fillet sandwich with leftover orange-pepper fish fillets. Lunch doesn’t have to be super repetitive — get a little creative. These ideas will get you started.

1. Steak into salad

Dinner: Steak with chimichurri

Lunch transformation: You can do more with steak and chimichurri than just throwing it into a bowl for lunch the next day. Chop your leftover steak into bite-size pieces, and make a salad. Grab some precut lettuce, tomatoes, avocado and red onion, toss them together with your leftover steak, and have your chimichurri serve as a simple and delicious dressing.

2. Chicken and rice into a burrito

Dinner: Arroz con pollo

Lunch transformation: Make a burrito from your leftover arroz con pollo. Take the meat off your chicken legs and thighs, and add that to a tortilla with a little rice, avocado, beans and corn if you have some in your pantry.

More: Easy lunch ideas your kids can make themselves

3. Pork chops into a hero

Dinner: Pork chops with ranch mix rub

Lunch transformation: If you have leftover pork chops in your fridge (whether or not they're spiced with tangy ranch rub), debone them, and make a sandwich for lunch. Grab a sesame seed loaf, add in your chops, and top it with lettuce, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese.

4. Roast salmon into chopped salad

Dinner: Lemon-roasted salmon with asparagus

Lunch transformation: Break up your salmon into big chunks, and combine it with bib lettuce, avocado, tomatoes and asparagus. You can run to your local salad shop and grab some lemon dressing, or make a five-minute vinaigrette yourself. You've just transformed dinner into a whole new meal!

5. Fish fillet into a sandwich

Dinner: Orange-pepper fish fillet

Lunch transformation: Your fish sandwich is going to be way better than a McDonald's Filet-O-Fish. Grab some sliced white bread, add your leftover fish to it, and top it with some arugula — Mickey D’s has nothing on you.

6. Put an egg on it

Dinner: Kale and quinoa salad with pine nuts and Parmesan cheese

Lunch transformation: Add a poached or hard-boiled egg on it. Adding an egg on anything turns it into a whole new meal (especially when grains are involved). We recommend going with a boiled egg (rather than poached) if you can't keep your lunch in a refrigerator.

7. Chicken bites into salad

Dinner: Sticky Asian chicken bites

Lunch transformation: You can make this leftover transformation three ways. Make a salad with an Asian dressing; make some orzo pasta, and serve the leftovers as a cold Asian-style salad; or serve the rest of the leftovers with white rice.

8. Salad with a protein boost

Dinner: Tomato and avocado salad

Lunch transformation: You can revamp your dinner salad by simply adding a protein. Make some grilled chicken (which literally takes five minutes), toss it in with the salad, and you’ll have yourself an effortless lunch.

More: 10 fun lunch ideas that don't involve sandwiches

9. Chicken and salsa into nachos

Dinner: Pineapple salsa chicken

Lunch transformation: You have to love a good salsa, and if you’re in the mood for Mexican, then this is the way to go. This idea combines salsa with shredded chicken for a killer dish. For lunch you can bring along some tortilla chips and make yourself some nachos. You can also make pineapple salsa chicken tacos or a burrito bowl. No matter what leftover option you choose, you’ll be winning.

10. Soup into sauce

Dinner: Black bean soup

Lunch transformation: Having soup two days in a row is a little boring, but you can always incorporate your black bean soup into other dishes. Make some chicken enchiladas, and pour a little bit of your black bean soup over them. You can do the same for tacos, burritos and more.

11. Chicken salad any way

Dinner: Chicken salad

Lunch transformation: Make a chicken salad sandwich, and enjoy it with chips, or have your chicken salad with lettuce cups. Another idea is to add spinach, tomatoes and avocados to your chicken salad sandwich.

12. Meatballs with salad or subs

Dinner: Slow cooker meatballs with side salad

Lunch transformation: For lunch, make a meatball sub with a baguette and leftover salad greens.

We’re pretty sure we know what Perez Hilton’s role will be on B&B

Hilton shared the big news in a video on his site.

“I am going to be a guest star on more than one episode in a role that’s going to shock people," he said in the video. "The Bold and the Beautiful is my favorite soap opera, and it’s aired internationally, so I’m so happy that people all over the world are going to watch me in this. Stay tuned.”

That little tease was all we needed to know. Given Hilton’s real-life job as a gossip columnist scooping the latest dish, we figure he is going to jump into the mix over at Forrester Creations.

More: B&B’s Karla Mosley is incredibly brave for revealing a dark part of her past

Quinn Fuller (Rena Sofer) is jumping back into the fray over at the fashion house, and fans know this isn’t going to be an easy return for her. With plenty of people like Ridge (Thorsten Kaye), Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang), Rick (Jacob Young) and Pam (Alley Mills) on hand to foil her fresh start, could Hilton somehow be in the mix?

We think the disher of gossip is going to play a scandalous version of himself, perhaps delivering some spicy news about Quinn, who swears she’s turned a new leaf. While she admits to her shady past, it’s possible that Hilton’s character won’t let her forget anything she’s trying to put behind her.

More: Not to be mean, but the Demi Lovato and Perez Hilton Twitter feud is pitiful

It would be the perfect role for Hilton, since he’s found himself in plenty of hot water with celebs over the years for situations like outing former ’N Sync member Lance Bass and for posting a link to an upskirt photo of an underage Miley Cyrus. Since he knows how to handle scandals when they get hot in the kitchen, we think B&B is the perfect place for him to land.

It's a bit slanderous for Prince's ex to be discussing his 'cocaine-diet' now

Prince's ex-girlfriend, Charlene Friend, just came out of the woodwork to put in her two cents about the news that prescription drugs were recently found hidden in a bottle of Aleve in Prince's bedroom — and we're just over here wondering, "Why?"

Friend, who dated Prince decades ago, somehow felt it appropriate to come forward with information pertaining to Prince's alleged drug use, even though she insists she never witnessed him do any drugs herself. She now claims Prince's half-brother, Duane Nelson, told her years ago — after she had split from Prince — that Prince was able to keep his energy up using a "cocaine diet."

"It was shocking to me to hear that," she recently told People magazine. "He hid it so carefully. I never saw him take even an aspirin. He seemed so health-conscious, always taking vitamins like echinacea and goldenseal."

More: Madonna's tribute to Prince didn't win over everyone — especially not BET

Friend says that Nelson — who died in 2013 — and other people close to Prince have filled her in over the years about Prince's use of downers to help him adjust coming off stage, in addition to his cocaine use.

She also adds that she only wants to remember "the good things" about her former love and that she wants "to respect his memory."

So basically, what Friend is trying to say is, she never personally witnessed drug use, but she's just here to spread some gossip about a man no longer alive to defend himself, something that she heard from a man who is no longer alive to confirm or deny his alleged statements. But... she only wants to respect Prince's memory.

We'd hate to accuse Friend of using her decades-old relationship for financial gain, but there's also the fact that Prince actually sued her back in 2003 for selling belongings that he had gifted to her, according to People. It's pretty obvious Friend is not above using Prince as a payday.

Look, I get it. Prince was a celebrity and people are going to say things about him — good and bad — even after his death. But for an old flame to come forward to relay he-said-she-said information about Prince's drug use, well, it just feels like pure slander at this point.

12 simple ways to make your laundry smell fresh as a spring morning

$
0
0

When clean laundry comes out smelling bad, you know something ain't right. Most of the time, smelly laundry has little to do with the type of detergent you use and everything to do with a buildup of bacteria and mold in your washer and dryer.

But really, it happens to the best of us, and it's only a matter of time before you'll need a few deodorizing tricks to get your laundry smelling oh-so-fresh again.

Step 1: Don't delay drying

Don't leave clean laundry in the machine after the load has finished washing — especially not overnight. With a nice warm, dark environment like a closed washing machine, bacteria and mold both thrive.

Step 2: Avoid the damp

Never put damp laundry in the washing pile. If you can't wash wet or damp clothes and towels immediately, pre-treat as needed and then let them dry to avoid getting smelly.

Step 3: Dry well

Thicker towels and heavy clothing such as jeans take longer to dry, so be sure to dry them thoroughly each time.

More: 18 house cleaning hacks for people who hate to clean

Step 4: Get a clothesline

Hang your laundry outside to dry. The sun can help keep mold at bay — just be sure to dry everything completely (even if it means some time in the dryer inside).

Step 5: Soften carefully

Avoid using liquid fabric softener in the washing machine, as some people have experienced a buildup of "gunk" from its use. (Vinegar is said to be a natural fabric softener.) If you do use store-bought fabric softener, dilute the mixture with water before adding it to the machine, and realize that the softener can make laundry harder to dry.

Step 6: Try different washing machine additives

There are many different laundry additives you can try — get some suggestions below. But be aware that these measures are guidelines only, and effectiveness will depend on many factors, including the size of the load, water temperature and the amount of water used, the origin of the bad smell, etc.

Next Up: Non-toxic/natural solutions

{pageBreak}

Step 7: Nontoxic/natural solutions

Try allowing each load of smelly laundry to pre-soak for at least 15 minutes in hot water, using one of these additives per load to see what (and how much) works best for you: borax (about 1/2 cup), vinegar (3/4 cup), lemon juice (about 1/2 cup), baking soda (3/4 cup), hydrogen peroxide diluted to 3 percent (1/2 cup).

Step 8: Commercial cleaning products to try

Try running your stinky wash loads with the addition of one extra cleaning product at a time, such as Clean Control, Simple Green or Pine-Sol (1/4 cup — and only if you can handle the scent).

More: 22 miraculous cleaning products that practically do all the work for you

Step 9: Common household products — but beware

You can try using 1/4 cup of bleach (add it to the wash water and make sure it has been diluted significantly before adding smelly laundry, and never use bleach with any other additive besides regular detergent). Another option is to add 1/2 cup of ammonia to a load of laundry, but be sure not to use with bleach to avoid creating dangerous fumes.

Step 10: Detergent with a bonus ingredient

Try a commercial laundry detergent that has an odor-removing additive, such as Febreze or Renuzit.

Step 11: Go with hot water

Use hot water to wash loads that smell.

More: Cleaning your bathroom sucks — but these hacks make it better

Step 12: Wash the washer

To help keep your smelly laundry problem from returning, you may need to give your clothes washer a deep clean of its own. Find out how to deodorize your smelly washing machine here.

Being in a relationship when you're famous has got to suck (bye-bye, any remaining privacy!), especially if the other person in the relationship with you is also famous, so you can't really blame Rihanna for wanting to keep whatever she's doing and whoever she's doing it with under wraps. For a while now, there's been a ton of speculation as to whether or not she's in a relationship, and if she is, if it's with Leonardo DiCaprio or Drake. On Sunday, both Drake and Rihanna appeared at the VMAs, and after he made a lovely speech about how fabulous she is, and gave her a truly excellent gift, he tried to kiss her on the mouth, and she gave him her cheek instead. (To be clear, she in no way owed him a public kiss, but the lack of one led everyone to believe the two were not, in fact, together.)

But wait! On Tuesday night in Miami, the pair was spotted at a club celebrating Drake's sold-out show at American Airlines Arena, and they acted like a full-on couple, complete with kissing, dancing and neck rubbing, apparently uninterested in hiding their togetherness. According to a source, Rihanna seemed "totally comfortable and natural" with Drake, and the two stayed out until 4 a.m. with their famous friends, including Flo Rida, Future and Lil Wayne.

While this isn't the first time they've been spotted being affectionate in public (they behaved similarly in Miami earlier this year when Drake supported Rihanna at the after-party for her concert), it's the first time in a while, and it pretty much confirms the rumors that the off-and-on couple are back on. Whenever these two have performed on stage together, folks have remarked on how much natural spark is between them, and it looks like those who dreamed of a reunion between the performers have gotten their wish.

Warning! Do not Google Gabby Douglas' unique medical emergency

You might have noticed that Gabby Douglas was the only member of the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team's Final Five (which includes Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman) who didn't make an appearance at the MTV VMAs on Sunday, Aug. 28. Douglas posted a picture of herself on Instagram recuperating from home after a medical emergency, and now we know what was up.

"I had a complication from a prior injury that caused a cyst to grow on a bone in my mouth," Douglas explained on Instagram next to a photo her in a dentist's chair. Apparently, while her teammates were prepping to present Beyoncé with an award, Douglas was hospitalized for the infection that stemmed from the injury, which resulted in swelling. The gymnast also suffered adverse reactions from medication she was taking to treat the condition.

More: Natalie Hawkins could learn a thing or two about family support from Gabby Douglas

In spite of the fact that Douglas won a gold medal in the team competition at the recent Rio Olympics, things weren't exactly going smoothly for her before her dental emergency. In addition to people continuing to be jerks about how her hair and skin looked while she competed at the Olympics (are you kidding?), Douglas also got a tremendous amount of (ridiculous) flak when she didn't put her hand on her heart during the playing of the U.S. National Anthem at a Rio medal ceremony. Douglas took to social media to clarify things: "I always stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played," she wrote on Twitter. "I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone." Here's hoping that the gross bullies back off Douglas, and that her health improves quickly. She's a national treasure, after all.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. These are just a sampling of the celeb couples we are constantly gushing over — and rightfully so, because they are all pretty darn cute.

But how come we're never paying attention to the marriage of Benji Madden and Cameron Diaz? Madden just posted the most adorable birthday message to his wife on Instagram that got us wondering why they don't get more love from the public.

"Happy Birthday to my beautiful Wife," Madden captioned a silhouetted pic. "You're my best friend and I'm so thankful for you, sometimes I just want to tell the world... Generous, Kind, Compassionate, Selfless, Humble, Thoughtful, Patient and Loyal. Just a few of the qualities I would use to describe who you are, consistently, everyday. Thanks for being you, I'm a lucky guy... Here's to many more... I love you @camerondiaz."

Somebody call a dentist, cuz these two are giving us a toothache. How are Madden and Diaz not constantly talked about as a celebrity couple fave?

Maybe it's because they have both gotten pretty skilled at maintaining a low public profile since they got together. They're rarely captured by paparazzi and they keep things private. It is, after all, the Hollywood couples who manage to stay out of headlines that usually end up in it for the long haul.

But that doesn't mean they aren't all about supporting one another, either. In addition to the cute birthday post above, Madden also gave an Instagram shout out to his sweetheart back in April, when her book The Longevity Book was released.

Your friends might be right about your bad relationship

We have all seen this in our own lives: You meet somebody new, but your friends see red flags. Why do we never seem to heed the advice of our friends?

It's no different on reality television. The twins on ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise told their good friend Amanda Stanton to be wary of Josh Murray’s intentions and about the book that was written about him. They tell her to be careful in this developing relationship. Amanda approached Josh about the issue, but they remained together. On The Real Housewives of New York City on Bravo, Bethany warned Luann de Lesseps’ about her fiance and told Luann about the questionable text message and photo that she received. Likewise, the New York Housewives chimed in about Luann’s situation, but Luann decided to stay despite their concerns. We also saw a similar situation in The Real Housewives of Orange County when cast member Vicki Gunvalson dated a man named Brooks, who her friends had warned her about. They did not end up together, but not because of Vicki following her friend’s advice.

More: Married at First Sight couples have it rough when it comes to arguments

In all three cases, every woman continued to have a relationship with the men despite their friend’s warnings and advice. Now, of course we do not know how long these relationships will actually last or if they end up in marriage, and itis up to the individual to decide for themselves what is best for them. But the question is: Do your friends know better than you when negative signs arise in relationships because they are more objective? Well, I think the answer is possibly yes.

More: I'm actually kind of bored with the fairy-tale endings on The Bachelorette

As a marriage and family therapist, I know that in order to tell if you are in a healthy and harmonious union you have to know yourself well. Knowing how to manage your wants and feelings and being able to realistically understand the other person’s actions is key. Being able to create a positive relationship together means knowing the difference between healthy and unhealthy behaviors. Part of that may come from being open to hearing the opinions of those who love you, because they want to help if they notice things that are not so great.

Sometimes, advice given by family or friends won't be what you want to hear, but it may be what you need to hear.

Often people have to learn for themselves if they made or did not make the right choice in their relationships. They will discover the answer to this as time progresses in the relationship. If you always seem to fall for the same problematic people, it might be time to seek therapy to figure out why these patterns occur for you.

Come on, Andi Dorfman, give us all the dirt on the new Bachelor Nick Viall

ICYMI, Nick Viall has officially been named the star of the next Bachelor. Woohoo! Oh... I mean... that's cool if you're into that kind of thing.

Who am I kidding? I've been high-key crushing on Viall this season on Bachelor in Paradise (and, if we're really being honest, long before then), so I'm pretty pumped.

Nick Viall

More: Forget Bachelor in Paradise news, Nick Viall is the next Bachelor

Of course, Viall isn't without controversy. After being dumped by Bachelorette Andi Dorfman for Josh Murray, Viall became the unofficial villain of the franchise when he called Dorfman out for sleeping with him — on the After the Final Rose special, in front of millions of viewers.

He then went on to crash Kaitlyn Bristowe's season, a move that seriously ruffled feathers among the existing contestants. Alas, he walked away heartbroken once more... a harsh reality that has been referenced more than once on this season's Bachelor in Paradise.

Viall's past became particularly publicized when none other than Murray showed up and "stole" the very girl Viall had been courting, Amanda Stanton. From that moment on, anytime Murray hasn't been sucking face with Stanton (which isn't very often, tbh), he and Viall seem to clash or have practically palpable tension.

The source? At first, Stanton. But the subject that really rubs Murray the wrong way is any mention of Dorfman's tell-all, It's Not Okay: Turning Heartbreak into Happily Never After.

This has led many a viewer to tweet that the big winner of this season is actually Dorfman, whose book sales had to have spiked from the curiosity all of this idle chatter piqued. I'm not ashamed to admit I've been dying to know what the ex-Bachelorette had to say about Viall — after all, he has asserted more than once that most of what Dorfman wrote about him is true.

More: 7 things to know about The Bachelor contestant from a polygamous cult

So, without further ado, let's take a look at a few of the things Dorfman said about Viall in her salacious and brutally honest book.

1. He was inappropriate on their overnight date

Bachelor
Image: Giphy

Apparently things did not go well during Dorfman and Viall's Fantasy Suite date. Sure, they had sex (we all know about that, thanks to Viall), but that doesn't mean it was good. "As he opened his mouth to speak, I was certain he was going to tell me he loved me. But instead, he asked, 'Would you rather?…' 'Ummm, would I rather what?’ ‘Would you rather make love... or f***?’ he asked without hesitation or the slightest sense of how bizarre this conversation was." When Dorfman replied she preferred to make love, Viall apparently responded with, "Well, If I had four times, I'd like to f*** the first three times and make love the fourth." Personally, I think Viall's question was legit, but as they say, different strokes for different folks.

2. His charisma did not translate in the bedroom

In what Viall has since called a "blow to the ego," Dorfman did not mince any words when it came to describing what her night with the two-time runner-up was like... and it ain't good. "All of the kissing and groping and chemistry we had atop the sheets just wasn't the same underneath them," she revealed, also noting that the sex wasn't "mind-blowing." Nick, my man! Say it ain't so.

3. He misrepresented that night when he "slut-shamed" her on TV

Although Dorfman did a pretty good job of keeping her composure when Viall questioned why she had sex with him during her season, she was actually filled with rage. "This motherf***er! Really? You want to confirm to the world what they probably already know, which is that two consenting adults who had been dating for seven weeks spent the night together without cameras and whaddaya know, had sex?... every part of me wanted to go all Georgia girl cray on his ass and fire back with some snarky response like, 'Oh really? Is that what you're calling it now, because I'm pretty sure you called it 'f***ing' when you were on top of me.' But I didn’t. Instead, I held back for one reason and one reason only: my fiancé."

3. He apologized for the whole debacle eventually

After the series aired and Dorfman was officially engaged to Murray, the couple wound up in Chicago one weekend. Viall apparently texted her and asked if they could talk, so she agreed. "Seeing the hurt in my face, he tells me he was angry that he had tried to reach out to me so many times before, and he felt hurt that I refused to see him. This was true — he had, and I had refused both times and told producers that he would have his chance to talk to me at the finale. Turns out that had been a terrible idea on my part, though I think the conversation would have been the same no matter where we had it." OK, so this isn't actually an accusation, but it merits mentioning. #TeamNick

5. She considered having sex with him again (after the show)

Again, not quite an accusation, but c'mon — this is juicy stuff and it brings up a salient point that I'll soon make. So, when Dorfman agreed to meet Nick at his apartment to talk, she had a little time to mull over the possible outcomes on what she calls "the longest elevator ride in history." But by the time they actually reached his floor, she'd never really gotten past one pressing thought. "I'm not wondering how the conversation will go or what he will say; I'm wondering if I'll have sex with him again," she said. "I know, I know! That's a terrible thought, and I don't know why my mind even goes there, but it does." Here's my point, then (told you I was coming around to it): If the sex was so awkward in the first place, why would she be considering more? Me thinks Viall was better in bed than Dorfman let on.

6. He exaggerated his lifestyle

andi dorfman
Image: Giphy

Before all of the drama and broken hearts and baggage, there was a spark — those first few moments Dorfman spent with Viall that drew her in. And part of what impressed her so much about him in those early days was how he spoke of his swanky lifestyle in Chicago. However, when Dorfman visited, she was underwhelmed, in a word. "I had envisioned high ceilings, exposed brick, a view of downtown, a bike on the wall, and contemporary artwork, but it [was] just a garden-variety bachelor pad. And in the shallowest of ways, being in his apartment [gave] me relief that the fantasy I had envisioned [wasn't] reality." Yowch. To her credit, at least she was aware of how shallow that sounded.

7. He was to blame for her breakup

Or, rather, she openly admits she felt that way after Viall outed her. "Sure, I was mad at him, but I never felt like he owed me anything. Did I feel betrayed by him? Absolutely. Did I think that his revelation caused my breakup? At times. But the truth is, while what he did had a damaging effect on my relationship, he wasn’t to blame. If it wasn't his revelation, it would have been something else down the road. God knows Number Twenty-Six [Josh Murray] always seemed to find plenty of ammo for our fights."

So maybe there is one time when it's OK to judge another mom

$

Hop onto social media for five minutes, and you’ll see a ton of articles, blog posts and status updates about mom-judging. Mom-judging is bad, we should refrain from jumping to conclusions and finger-pointing, we don’t know the other side of the story, yadda yadda yadda.

But moms love to judge other moms. Well, maybe we don’t love it, but we do it, if we’re all being honest with one another. Sometimes it’s almost instinctual, right? We want to judge the hot mess mom with the crazy hair, wearing pajamas in public. Seriously, why couldn’t she put on some pants and drag a comb through her hair?

More: Meet a mom who moved clear across the country to escape Zika

Maybe we want to judge the mom whose kid is having an epic temper tantrum on aisle nine because she won’t give in and buy those Batman fruit snacks. What’s wrong with her? Why can’t she control her kid? Your 3-year-old has a pacifier? Your kindergartner isn’t potty-trained? You feed your kids Lunchables? Judge, judge, judge.

We all parent differently, and we don’t know what we don’t know. The pajama-wearing train wreck might have been at the ER all night with a sick kid. The kindergartner who isn’t potty-trained might have some medical issues we don’t know about and that are frankly none of our effing beez.

Judging is bad. Except when it isn’t. Except when it’s warranted.

Maybe the pendulum has swung too far. Maybe our hesitance to judge another mother’s actions has the potential to put (or leave) a child in a harmful situation.

If you see a mom stagger out of a bar with a baby on her hip, plunk the kid in the back seat of her car and drive away, that's when it’s OK to judge her. Don’t judge her for having too much to drink "on the mom clock." Don’t judge her for taking her baby into a bar. I mean, neither of those things screams “awesome parenting,” but judge her for putting her child’s life at risk.

If you see a mom dash out of her car, leaving the engine running while her 2-year-old peacefully slumbers in the back seat, and run into the drugstore for “just a minute,” you should judge her. Yes, we get what a nightmare it will be to wake up that cranky kid, take her into the store and then strap said cranky kid back into the car seat again, but leaving a child unattended in a car should never, ever happen.

More: I hired a birth photographer, and it was worth every blessed cent

If the kids next door are showing signs of abuse or neglect, then hell yes, you should judge their parents. And by signs of abuse or neglect, I don’t mean the mom lets the kids wear shirts that don’t match their shorts and gives cheese puffs instead of kale chips for snacks. There’s a difference between abuse and being a slightly lazy (or maybe just tired) parent, and we’re all smart enough to know where that line is drawn.

But do more than judge. Get involved. Speak up. Say something. Call someone. You might not be comfortable approaching an intoxicated stranger and questioning her about her fitness to get in the car with her child, and that’s OK. But you’re capable of writing down a license plate number and making a phone call.

More: Why I told off a stranger for being mean to her kid

There’s a line between mom-judging and being the bystander who fails a child. When a mom puts her child in physical danger, you bet your ass you should judge her. The mom who is turning a blind eye to her kid’s grocery store meltdown needs to be treated differently than the mom who left her kid in the car alone.

And we need to know the difference.

How to get the mix-ins-loaded ice cream of your dreams without a machine

$

Tell me, are you one of those people who gets a pint of ice cream and commences digging out all the bits of candy or chocolate or pretzel or caramel or what have you? Because I am, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. But I am disappointed when my pint turns out to be a desert of mix-ins. Like, if I wanted to eat just ice cream, I would have gotten a plainer flavor. Where are the cherries? The bits of dark chocolate? The blobs of cookie dough I was promised?

The ice cream struggle is real, but there are a few solutions, even if you don't own an ice cream maker. I invested in one years ago, and after a summer of creating exotic ice cream flavors no one but me wanted to eat, I abandoned it in the cabinet to collect dust for several years. I gave it away just before I moved house a couple of months ago.

More: 15 super-easy ice cream recipes you could make with your eyes closed

1. Make it in a plastic bag

Just about every parent of a school-age kid knows the ice cream-in-a-bag trick. Basically you put milk, sugar and flavoring into a plastic bag, and then put that in a larger bag filled with ice cubes. Shake, shake, shake, shake until your arms fall off, and eventually you will have ice cream. This usually works for single-serving sizes, so manage your expectations. Add your mix-ins right before serving.

2. Disturb the cream

Another method is the freeze-mix-freeze-mix-freeze-mix-for-eternity method. Mix together your ice cream ingredients, and pour them into a shallow pan. Let it start to freeze. From there, you're going to spend the rest of the afternoon stirring and refreezing your ice cream until it's done, so I hope you're not planning anything else that day. Add mix-ins toward the end of the process.

More: 2-ingredient ice cream will change your life

3. Use a Curious Creamery mix

curious creamery
Image: Curious Creamery

The Curious Creamery sent us samples of its ice cream kits, which we tried out almost immediately. Use a hand or stand mixer to whip up a liquid of your choice with its packet of magic ingredients,* adding your mix-ins at the very end. You can use cow's milk, coconut milk or pretty much any other liquids (including booze). They even give you the container to keep it in.

When I made this with my son, we used so many chopped strawberries, peaches and thick ribbons of caramel sauce it was practically all mix-ins, and we're not sorry. The next batch will be a sick combination of chocolate, hazelnuts and Frangelico. I will eat it, and then I will say, "Thank me! I'm welcome!"

*Glucose syrup solids, palm kernel oil, sugar, ultra-filtered skim milk powder, maltodextrin, sodium caseinate, distilled mono and diglycerides, guar gum, locust bean gum, gum Arabic and salt.

Yes, that's a long list of ingredients not everyone wants in their family members' bodies (see below). But it's a pretty fun and easy alternative for those of us who want to try making our own ice cream every once in a while but don't want to — or can't — buy an ice cream maker.

Jinger Duggar confesses she isn't following courting rules on Counting On

Keeping in mind that "extreme" in the Duggar universe means something very different than in the rest of the world, Jinger Duggar revealed on Tuesday's new episode of Counting On that her plans regarding courtship rules in her relationship with now-fiancé Jeremy Vuolo aren't exactly traditional.

More: Leader of Duggar family ministry sued for sexual abuse

Jinger, who is super-duper in love, so much so, in fact, that she's lost her appetite for ice cream (that's how you know it's serious), went to visit Jessa and Ben, along with Jeremy and, not surprisingly, Jim Bob. After the two announced that they were courting, Ben asked them if they had thought about the restrictions they'd be putting on their relationship during this time. Jeremy told the room that he'd like to save the physical part of things for marriage (Ben: "Good answer."). In an interview, though, Jinger explained that people aren't all the same, and so she and Jeremy aren't going to have a list written up of things they can and can't do. Instead, they'll have a general idea of how they want to conduct themselves and let the people around them know. And pray about it, obviously.

More: Is Michelle Duggar able to give birth to a 20th child?

We've already seen Jinger and Jeremy fly in the face of Duggar propriety with their rampant frontal hugging, but this business of recognizing individuality is basically the equivalent of cutting your hair and going to secular college. (Kind of.) Of course, Duggar history is littered with evidence that although one might claim anything is possible for these girls, we actually know it isn't. Still, Jinger's declaration that she and Jeremy won't be adhering to the long list of Duggar courtship rules is a pretty big deal, although, theoretically, courting couples seem to be allowed to develop their own relationship guidelines. You have to wonder if the engaged Duggar couples actually do follow the rules they make up when the cameras aren't around (although the presence of the cameras didn't stop Jinger and Jeremy, or Jill and Derick, who also totally frontal hugged before they got married), or if it's all a lot of talk for the cameras. I'm inclined to think that they do follow their own rules, but it does make you question what really goes on when there's so much emphasis on not doing things and avoiding temptation.

There are those of us still holding out hope that Jinger will be the Duggar who will throw off the mantle of expectation and run far, far away, but the likelihood that that's actually going to happen is becoming less and less likely. Toeing the line in regard to courtship rules might be as good as it gets. (Still, though, #FreeJinger.)

Jessica's Suits exit is clearly coming, and Suits without Jessica will suck

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Is Jessica Pearson going to leave her own law firm? Wednesday's episode of Suits sure makes that seem like a possibility.

More: 11 reasons a Donna and Harvey relationship on Suits is way overdue

In addition to Mike finally closing Cahill's deal and seemingly getting out of prison for good, Jessica came face-to-face again with her old flame Jeff (played by D.B. Woodside). The two parted ways after Jessica confessed Mike's fraud and told Jeff she needed time to clean up the mess. Well, she's still trying to pick up all of the pieces, but that didn't stop the two from reconnecting over dinner.

Clearly, the chemistry between Jessica and Jeff is still there, not to mention the fact that they still very much love one another. Unfortunately, Jessica is focused on turning around Pearson Specter Litt. That's only a small hurdle, right? They can get past that. Well, not if Jeff leaves New York City for Chicago.

Sadly, Jeff is probably going to head to Chicago for a new job. His potential new company called Jessica for a reference and after giving a glowing recommendation, she discussed Jeff's opportunity with him. He doesn't have the gig just yet, but it sure seems like he'll score it. As much as Jeff wanted to ask Jessica to go with him, he knew it wouldn't happen because of Jessica looking after her firm.

By no means did he try to guilt trip her, either, but absolutely respects Jessica for being an amazing lawyer and trying to turn her firm back into what it once used to be. That's one of the many reasons Jeff is perfect for her. I'm sure somewhere deep down Jessica wants to go with Jeff, but she also has her business to fix.

Here is where my paranoia and anxiety come into play. This could be Suits' way of planting the seed for Jessica's exit. No, it has nothing to do with that former announcement of Gina Torres (who plays Jessica) nabbing a role in a new ABC pilot, because that pilot is not going forward.

More: Suits’ Mike & Harvey have never been more vulnerable than they are right now

Suits, Gina Torres

Suits, Gina Torres

Why I'm worried is due to some cryptic Instagram photos Meghan Markle (Rachel Zane) shared in August. As you can see above and below, not only are the pictures themselves telling, but Markle's captions sure sound like goodbyes between Torres, Markle and Sarah Rafferty (Donna Paulsen). Why would she use the word "goodnight" and the hashtag "#friendsforever"? Also, is that some type of goodbye meal?

Suits, Gina Torres #2

Suits, Gina Torres #2

It sure looks and reads like a permanent goodbye. Yes, Rafferty could be the one exiting, but seeing as Torres is looking and booking other roles (like the now-dead ABC pilot), my money is on her departure. There is a good chance she wants to leave Jessica behind and start pursuing other projects. She has been with the series for five years, so maybe Torres needs a change.

Or maybe Jeff saying he would love for Jessica to come with him to Chicago means nothing at all. Though, I highly doubt it, because my gut is telling me to. If Jessica does choose to leave with Jeff, it could simply be a twist for the end of Season 6 and then she could easily return come Season 7.

But let's say Torres is leaving Suits after Season 6. It's definitely going to be hard to say goodbye. Jessica is one fierce character who deserves to shine, and a Suits without Jessica won't be the same. However, if Torres wanted to leave to further her career (and to finally anchor her own show as the lead, because she totally deserves for that to happen), I can't argue with her there and wish her nothing but all of the luck in the world.

I guess Suitors will have to wait to see what comes of Season 6 and if this is the last season for badass Jessica Pearson.
