David Foster's hanging out with another RHOBH cast member: Lisa Rinna

$

Lisa Rinna may be trying to take Yolanda Hadid’s life. First, her daughter signed a modeling contract, just like Foster’s daughter, Gigi Hadid, and now she’s hanging out with David Foster — Yolanda Hadid's ex-husband. Rinna posted a photo to her Instagram that featured her husband, Harry Hamlin, hanging out with Foster in Muskoka, Ontario, Canada.

Rinna was very cryptic with her caption. She said, “Life just gets fucking weirder and weirder. It's a small world after all.........#HandsomeDudes #Lakelife about last night at David's Charity Event.”

Rinna, herself, wasn't in the picture, but that didn’t stop people from calling her out for being a bad friend to Hadid. One fan wrote, “David's just an egotistical A-hole that only cares about himself. Jerkoff!” While another chimed in with a simple, “Not cool.”

Rinna isn’t known for being particularly nice to Hadid. In fact, she spent most of her time on last season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills talking about Hadid and accusing her of faking her Lyme disease. She went so far to "diagnose" Hadid with Munchausen syndrome — a psychiatric disorder in which a person fakes illnesses for sympathy and care from others. It's not clear whether those who have Munchausen are aware of what they're doing or why. But then, Rinna isn't a psychiatrist either.

It was really a mess, and it took a long time for Hadid to even be in the same room with Rinna, let alone trust her. Could this picture be just another sticking point in their relationship?

More: Yolanda Foster responds to Lisa Rinna's ugly accusations

It’s totally possible that Rinna and Hamlin have been friends with Foster for years and they are able to be friends with both him and Hadid after the divorce. But commenters don’t seem to think Rinna is totally innocent.

More: Yolanda Foster believes Lisa Rinna is 'stuck in the darkness'

What we do know is there will probably be enough drama and backstory in the next season of RHOBH. Until then, I suggest reading the comments of her post. They’re totally hilarious.

11 hypoallergenic dog breeds that will save you from a whole lot of sniffles

Allergies are on the rise, especially among children, which makes it even harder to bring home a fluffy ball of fur as a family pet. If you're looking for a furry friend who doesn't trigger an allergy attack, we have 11 adorable nonallergic breeds for you to choose from.

While these low-dander dogs are friendly to most allergy sufferers, it helps to visit and spend time with a particular breed to see if it causes an allergic reaction before committing to a pup.

11. Bichon frise

Bichon frise
Image: AL_HikesAZ/Flickr

Don't let the puffy coat fool you. These little marshmallows are jolly, easy to train and don't shed. As long as you brush their curly tresses, they won't shower dander and dust. The bichon frise is great for a family wanting a small, cheerful dog as an easygoing companion.

Perfect for apartments, they tend to max out at a petite 12 inches tall and weigh only 7 to 12 pounds but can generally get plenty of exercise indoors. They also live a very long life, at 15 or more years.

Next Up: Schnauzer

{pageBreak}

10. Schnauzer

Schnauzer
Image: _Bunn_/Flickr

These shed-less pups are great for the owner who loves to be the center of attention — or the kid who loves playing follow-the-leader. The schnauzer loves his owners so much that he won't let them out of his sight, so expect to have a buddy by your side at all times. He does need a firm hand, though, to balance his stubborn, energetic and protective temper. Schnauzers come in three sizes: standard, giant and miniature.

While you can pick your size, do know that the giant model, as a larger dog, may not live quite as long as smaller ones (though not by much).

Next Up: Yorkshire terrier

{pageBreak}

9. Yorkshire terrier

Yorkshire terrier
Image: iamhenry/Flickr

Don't have a big yard? Then a Yorkie is perfect for you! They are content playing and cuddling with you indoors. This pup doesn't shed or have a lot of dander. She does require heavy grooming, however, so keep the brush in hand when she paws at your lap.

Most people love this breed for its adorably tiny size — at just about 7 pounds and 6 or 7 inches tall, she's for sure a purse-size pup.

Next Up: Bedlington terrier

{pageBreak}

8. Bedlington terrier

Bedlington terrier
Image: Cloganese/Flickr

Although at first glance he looks more like a lamb than a dog, the Bedlington terrier could be the perfect canine addition to a laid-back family. These do not shed and are very mild-mannered.

Maxing out at 17 inches and 23 pounds (with males and females being far closer in size than many other breeds), they do very well in apartments as long as there's plenty of room to play.

Next Up: Shih tzu

{pageBreak}

7. Shih tzu

Shih tzu
Image: Beverley Goodwin/Flickr

Despite those long, silky locks, this breed sheds very lightly. Although they need a lot of grooming, they are affectionate, kind and easygoing. But be wary: Shih tzus tend to become jealous of babies and toddlers, so protect your other little loved ones from their insecurity. Even though they're only up to 11 inches and 16 pounds, they may not be the best fit for families with small kids who don't know how to act around dogs (or if your dog isn't properly obedience-trained).

These pups are also prone to a host of health problems that can add to the amount of maintenance they require (especially as they get older), but if you're like many dog lovers, showering your baby with affection is your favorite hobby anyway, right?

Next Up: Poodle

{pageBreak}

6. Poodle

Poodle
Image: Deb Watson/Flickr

Like the schnauzer, the poodle comes in three sizes: standard, miniature and toy. They do not shed, but they do require a lot of grooming and care. They're easy to train, but the smaller ones can get a little yappy. That said, poodles of any size are remarkably intelligent and typically very strong at any size.

Poodles too prissy for your liking? Try a labradoodle. They have the hypoallergenic coat of a poodle, but on a Labrador's body.

Next Up: Cane Italiano!

{pageBreak}

5. Italian greyhound

Italian greyhound
Image: Melissa Ross/Getty Images

Perfecto! This little Italian has a thin coat, so he barely sheds, and it's easy to keep him clean of allergens. The breed is very playful and loyal and does not need a big yard. They're extremely sensitive to cold, though, so this isn't a good breed for a family living in a chilly climate. In many climates, they're the perfect dog if you need justification to dress your pet in cute sweaters.

Much smaller than the greyhounds that usually come to mind, this little cutie maxes out at about 15 inches high and 10 pounds.

Next Up: Basenji

{pageBreak}

4. Basenji

Basenji
Image: kanonn/Flickr

No, not Benji from the movies, but even better. These pups don't shed or bark, they have very little dander, and they're darling, so they're a great choice. They do sometimes make an odd yodeling noise, and they can be hard to train (like most hounds). But this stubborn demeanor comes packed with a lot of lovable personality.

I don't recommend getting a basenji if you live in tight quarters, as he's pretty active indoors, but it's great if you have a large apartment conducive to activity or a backyard. He may be only as big as 17 inches and 26 pounds, but it's not a good idea to trust him around non-canine animals or kids who aren't well versed in showing dogs they're the alpha.

Next Up: Chinese crested

{pageBreak}

3. Chinese crested

Chinese Crested
Image: hehaden/Flickr

The most efficient way to avoid dog-induced allergies is to get a dog without any, or with very little, hair. You can't go wrong with the Chinese crested; they barely shed at all. They do produce dander and can be a little clingy, but they're very good with children.

When you're searching for one, be advised that there's actually a powderpuff variety that does have hair, but they're almost equally allergy-friendly. They're just harder to care for because their fur can mat if you don't brush it properly. Both varieties need to wear sweaters in cold weather, but they're excellent apartment dogs, at 12 inches high and about 10 pounds on average, and need only frequent exercise rather than a backyard to frolic in.

More: 11 Reasons small dogs are better than big dogs

Next Up: Smile like Sam

{pageBreak}

2. Samoyed

Samoyed
Image: VirtualWollf/Flickr

The Samoyed is a sneezing owner's dream come true. This breed does shed, but you'll find no doggy odor or dander, making these dogs the perfect option for people with allergies. They're known for being laid-back, gentle and "smiley," so they're great around kids.

They're usually around 21 inches tall and about 40 pounds, and they're very active indoors. Apartment life is OK as long as they get plenty of exercise, but make note that unlike many of the other dogs on this list, Samoyeds have a nice, thick coat of fur, so they love cold weather (and cuddling... in fact, they're bred to do it!).

Next Up: Maltese

{pageBreak}

1. Maltese

Image: Pixabay

What do Britney Spears, Halle Berry, Eva Longoria and Elizabeth Taylor all have in common? These mega-celebs have all owned at least one adorable Maltese in their lives.

The Maltese may be small in stature, but don't let their size fool you — these pups come with a whole lot of lovable personality. Known to have a calm and gentle nature, Maltese pups make excellent family dogs. They have long, silky hair that does require a bit of extra attention, but running a brush through their luxurious locks once a day will prevent any grooming issues.

If space is an issue, this breed may be for you. Maltese generally weigh about seven pounds and don't require a huge yard to run around in. They do need a few brisk, daily walks, but they prefer to spend the rest of their time cuddled up next to their favorite human.

Allergies are different for everyone, so do your research. Check out WebMD for details on the causes of dog allergies. Also check out the official AKC-approved list of hypoallergenic breeds, or visit the Breeder Retriever for tons of breed information and puppy-parenting tips.

Making a Murderer's Brendan Dassey is a free man: Is Steven Avery next?

Justice has been served. Making a Murderer’s Brendan Dassey, Steven Avery’s nephew, will be released from prison in the next few months. Dassey’s conviction for the murder of Teresa Halbach was overturned by a judge today.

According to People, Judge William Duffin made the decision due, in part, to the “misconduct” of Dassey’s first attorney, Len Kachinsky, which he described as “indefensible.”

More: Making a Murderer Season 2 will give new hope to Brendan Dassey supporters

The court documents that explain the decision said, "The investigators repeatedly claimed to already know what happened on Oct. 31 and assured Dassey that he had nothing to worry about. These repeated false promises, when considered in conjunction with all relevant factors, most especially Dassey's age, intellectual deficits and the absence of a supportive adult, rendered Dassey's confession involuntary under the Fifth and 14th Amendments."

Of course, now that Dassey’s ruling has been overturned — thanks in large part to the Netflix documentary series — the next question is whether or not Avery’s conviction will be overturned.

More: 7 things you should know about Teresa Halbach from Making a Murderer

Avery’s new attorney, Kathleen Zellner, told People, "We are thrilled for Brendan Dassey that his conviction has been overturned. We fully expected this outcome from an unbiased court that carefully examined his confession."

The decision gave new hope to Zellner and Avery. She said, “We know when an unbiased court reviews all of the new evidence we have, Steven will have his conviction overturned as well."

Of course, some people aren’t totally convinced that Avery will get the same judgment. There’s no doubt that he was treated unfairly and there is definitely reasonable doubt in the way his case was handled, but since the documentary has been released, other evidence has surfaced that’s made it harder to think Avery is totally innocent.

More: 7 things to expect in Making a Murderer Season 2

Whether or not he gets the same decision, though, Avery deserves a fair trial, and Zellner is undoubtedly the best at what she does.

We’re just glad to see Dassey get some justice, and we hope that he can quickly transition back into his regular life.

Baking tips that take your fruit pie from good to blue-ribbon sensational

$

My grandma taught me to make my first pie when I was 8 years old. More than 20 years later, it’s still my favorite dessert. Some of these tips are a century old, passed on from my grandma to my dad to me. And some are fresh from two decades of cooking pies. Either way, they’re sure to make your next pie your best yet.

More: 18 blackberry dessert recipes worth staining your fingers purple

1. Use shortening and butter in the dough

An age-old pastry argument is whether shortening trumps butter or vice versa. Settle the debate by using both. A combination is best because butter gives you flavor, while shortening makes for a flaky crust.

2. Hands off!

The most common pie-baking tip is keep your hands off the dough. For good reason — chilled dough performs best, and your hands are too warm. Use two knives to cut up the shortening and butter. Use waxed paper when handling the dough. If you want a flaky crust, keep your hands to yourself.

3. Lemon juice will wake up your fruit filling

No matter what fruit you choose for your pie, a tablespoon or 2 of lemon juice adds tanginess and complexity. As a finishing touch, take a lemon quarter (free of seeds), and squeeze the juice conservatively over the pie filling. It’ll wake up the natural sugars in the fruit and enrich the overall flavor of the pie.

4. Butter, butter and more butter

When it’s all said and done and the fruit is glistening up at you from its doughy home, dab butter on top of the pie filling. Just 5 to 6 small teaspoons of butter will do. Butter adds richness and lushness. It's not to be missed.

More: 20 sweet fresh cherry recipes that sing summer

5. Don’t be afraid to go rogue

Surprising fruit combinations often make for the best pies. Don’t be afraid to spruce up classic fruit pies by pairing one fruit such as apple with something unexpected like blueberries. Another great pairing? Peaches and raspberries. Or try shaving fresh coconut on top of a rhubarb pie. Or better yet, go rogue and use three different fruits, like apple, peach and cherry. Be bold. Reinvent a classic.

6. Make 3-step cinnamon rolls from leftover dough

There’s always some unusable dough left over when making a pie. Take whatever’s left, and instead of storing it for future use, roll it out in a long, rectangular shape. Spread butter generously on top. Sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar on the buttered dough (4 parts sugar to 1 part cinnamon). Roll up the dough like a yoga mat, and slice into rolls. Bake for approximately 30 minutes at 400 degrees F. Serve the cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing.

Find out what happened to the Marriage Boot Camp couples after the show

$

Well, here we are at the end of another season of Marriage Boot Camp. (For those of you who are already experiencing withdrawal, a new season will be starting in October and will include Karen Gravano from Mob Wives.) In tonight's finale, we saw the final ring ceremony, when the couples decided whether or not they were still going to attempt a relationship. There was one surprise along with some distinct non-surprises. It turns out, though, that more went on after the show was over.

More: What the heck are Michelle Money and Cody Sattler doing on Marriage Boot Camp?

Last week, Tara Reid finally admitted that she and Dean May were never actually in a romantic relationship and were on the show purely for fame (probably also money). Hosts Jim and Elizabeth Carroll were understandably super peeved and sent them both packing, thus ending our long national nightmare. I still have questions as to why Tara and Dean didn't just keep their whole thing under wraps until after the show was over, but I've never lied to get on a reality show, so what do I know? Dean apparently has a girlfriend now, and she isn't Tara.

Michelle Money and Cody Sattler, who went from making us ask why they were on the show in the first place to hating each other to processing their issues (cheating) and working together well, decided to make a new start. Michelle literally introduced herself to Cody as if they had never met. However, the two are broken up now, according to a video message recorded later.

Lisa D'Amato and Adam Friedman, whose main problem seemed to be that Adam was a doomsday prepper and therefore didn't want to have another baby, decided to stay together — even though Adam went out on "singles night" and blacked out, and Dean had to stop him from bringing a girl back to the house. In spite of Adam's shenanigans, the couple remained together, and Lisa is expecting their second child in September.

In spite of repeated infidelities revealed over the course of the season, Lorenzo Gordon and Brittish Williams also re-committed to one another, although Brittish admitted that she questioned their relationship and Lorenzo's trustworthiness.

Probably the biggest surprise of the night was Memphitz and Toya Wright. The couple fought throughout the season about the "hall pass" Toya had given Memphitz, which allowed him to sleep with other women. At the ring ceremony, Toya told him she wanted to stay married, but he was going to have to surrender the hall pass and let her move to California with him. Memphitz's response was to show Toya an empty ring box. Twitter responses were in agreement that this was probably the best possible scenario. Toya has had enough heartache in her life and deserves better.

It does seem like the group, sans Dean and Tara, formed good relationships with one another. This is definitely better than past seasons, when everyone wanted to kill each other. So... good work, Marriage Boot Camp?

Saying you 'regret' having kids isn't the same as regretting your kids

$
0
0

This morning, my 2-year-old grabbed my face between his soft, dimpled hands and pulled me toward him for a sloppy toddler kiss. It's something he does at least once a day, and my heart explodes each time, because it makes me feel exactly how I always imagined motherhood would feel: joyous, special and full of love. In those moments with my son, I feel completely fulfilled, but as any parent can tell you, raising kids isn't always like that.

I became a mom for the first time in 2011. Like other expectant moms, I read all the birthing and parenting books at my disposal, and I joined every new-mom Facebook group and message board I could find. The message I got over and over again from all those books and online postings was that motherhood is life’s greatest gift — that it’d have hard parts, but they’d be worth it when compared to the all-encompassing love and gratitude I'd feel for my child.

More: OMG! How does Michael Phelps do it all with a baby?

After nearly five years as a mom, I can tell you that gratitude gets harder to find at 3 in the morning, when your nipples are cracked and the baby is still screaming to use you as a human pacifier. It's harder to find that love when you have postpartum depression or to feel #Blessed when you're pumping breast milk in a bathroom stall at work after your too-short maternity leave. There are parts of parenthood that are so difficult they sometimes make me question whether I even made the right choice in having kids. And as hard as that is to admit, it’s a feeling I know many other parents share.

A survey of German parents by YouGov found that, out of 2,045 moms and dads polled, around 1 in 5 said they regret having kids. Lest you think these people are monsters, you should know that 95 percent of them said they love their kids without question. Still, 52 percent of them feel their lives are limited by their children, and 44 percent of mothers said they probably would’ve done better in their careers if they hadn’t chosen to have babies.

“Regret” is a strong word, but the truth is, a lot of parents feel blindsided by how difficult it is to raise kids, and there’s still so much shame in talking about that. As a society we do a good job of telling people all the wonderful things about being parents. We post glowing breastfeeding selfies and sweet videos of our babies hitting their milestones with a smile. We fill our Pinterest boards with beautiful nursery decor and talk about how we’ve never known a love like what we feel for our kids.

More: This isn't what I expected when I forced myself to wake up an hour before my kid every day

We all struggle with the monotony, sacrifice and hardship that goes into being a parent, but we don’t say it, because it’s taboo. We don’t want to seem ungrateful for our kids or get judged for being unhappy. Parenthood has an ingrained culture of silence when it comes to discontent, and it’s hard for anyone new to the game to get a good sense of what parenthood is really like when all they’re ever exposed to is other parents’ highlight reels.

As a parent, you never, ever stop loving your kids, but you also miss out on important events and big promotions. You spend thousands of dollars a year on child care and have almost zero maternity (or paternity) leave at most workplaces. You’re exhausted, you can’t take care of yourself the way you used to, sometimes you’re anxious or clinically depressed, you gain weight, and the concept of free time or a day off is about as realistic as the Easter Bunny.

There are moments when parenthood is downright awful. And as with any big decision, there will be times when every parent questions themselves and thinks, “Holy shit, what have I done? Why did I get myself into this? This is so not how I thought it would be.” We should be able to talk about those feelings just as often as we talk about first words and which brand of diapers we’re using.

More: My adopted kids are never going to know how much they 'cost'

It’s not so much that parents regret their children. Rather, we’re overwhelmed by the feeling that we had no idea how much our lives would change, how much we’d be forced to give up and how hard we’d have to work once we had kids. Parenthood is wonderful, joyous and magical, but it’s also the hardest thing most of us will ever do. And maybe fewer people would feel blindsided by the reality of having kids if it were more acceptable to admit that everything is not always perfect.

Leaked video shows Johnny Depp yelling at Amber Heard and throwing her phone

$

0

A new video obtained and released by TMZ shows Johnny Depp screaming at Amber Heard in a fit of rage while slamming kitchen cabinets, filling his glass with red wine and, ultimately, throwing Heard's cellphone when he realized she was recording the incident.

Heard, who obtained a restraining order against Depp in May after alleging domestic abuse as the reason for their divorce, secretly recorded her ex in what appears to be a state of extreme anger. It's unknown what happened before this scary kitchen scene, which reportedly took place months before the actress claimed he had been abusing her and had struck her in the face.

Heard apologizes to Depp as he storms around the kitchen: "I just woke up and you were still asleep," she tells him. "We were not even fighting this morning. All I did was say sorry."

Depp asks Heard if she wants to see "crazy" and then says, "I'll show you crazy. Here's fucking crazy," before filling his glass with red wine and slamming the bottle of wine down on a table. Heard asks Depp if he drank the entire bottle of wine that morning. The actor then notices Heard is recording the entire thing and says, "You've got this going?" The video gets fuzzy as Depp grabs her phone and hurls it across the room.

Johnny Depp video

Johnny Depp video

More: Johnny Depp isn't letting Amber Heard's domestic abuse accusations go so easily

It's difficult to watch this video clip and not think that Heard must have planned to record it because this probably wasn't the first time an incident like this happened. Was she frightened and attempting to gather evidence in case something even more serious took place that would force her hand in demanding a divorce? If her goal was to provide proof that could be used in court, she may have thwarted those efforts by recording Depp without his permission.

Sources connected with Depp also told TMZ that the video is heavily edited and that Heard can be seen "egging on" her ex-husband and even smiling in some portions of the video. Yet again, we have a classic case of he said/she said, with Depp's folks insisting that Heard attempted to set him up with this video.

More: Johnny Depp & his team reportedly have new evidence against Amber Heard

One thing is certain: This video is only going to make Heard and Depp's divorce proceedings even messier, if that's possible. Since day one, Depp has denied abusing Heard and has fought tooth and nail to have the restraining order removed because he fears it can hurt his career. After a 15-month marriage, the couple announced their divorce in May, when Heard accused Depp of attacking her and hitting her in the face with a phone. Heard's legal team is now fighting to force Depp to provide the court with financial records needed to resolve their divorce, while Depp's people have made it clear they'll only oblige if Heard quits talking to the press about their relationship (and agrees to pay a $100,000 fine if she does reveal more info).

Heard and Depp are due back in court on Aug. 14 and 15. Things can't possibly get any worse for them, can they?

Tyga reaches settlement with landlord — but it could cost Kylie Jenner her car

It sounds like he still needs to get his priorities straight, but for the time being, Tyga is out of legal trouble. His arrest warrant will be canceled now that he and his former landlord have reportedly agreed on a settlement over money Tyga owed for a Malibu property he rented back in 2012. Tyga skipped out on a court date and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest, but the landlord's attorney confirmed that a confidential settlement has been reached this week and Tyga is off the hook.

The rapper apparently broke his lease early on the property and failed to pay a month of rent — which, at $16,000 a month, wasn't exactly affordable for most people. But hey, it's not like someone forced Tyga to choose this particular mansion over more humble living accommodations.

The landlord claims that Kylie Jenner's on-off boyfriend left the apartment in pretty bad shape after installing a stripper pole in the bedroom, disconnecting the intercom system and damaging the shower, hardwood floors and gate opener. The total damages came out to $480,285 — an amount Tyga claimed he couldn't pay because of poverty, which is an excuse that doesn't hold up in court after you go and buy your girlfriend a new $200,000 Mercedes-Maybach for her 19th birthday, as Tyga did earlier this week.

kylie car

kylie car

More: If you thought Tyga was going to propose to Kylie Jenner, think again

Jenner has been celebrating her birthday in the Turks and Caicos Islands with friends this week, and rumor has it that Tyga skipped his court hearing to temporarily live in the lap of luxury alongside her. That little detail, along with the fact that Tyga splurged on a wildly expensive gift for Kylie without first settling his own debt, might lead you to believe that the rapper still has a lot to learn about responsibility.

More: Kylie Jenner should return her new car to Tyga if arrest rumors are true

The good news is that some of this drama is behind him and that Tyga has agreed to fork over whatever amount of money the landlord needs to make this legal hassle go away. The landlord's attorney made it pretty clear that Tyga would be forced to pay up in any way he could — even if that means returning luxurious gifts or money he has doled out to other people. Luckily for Kylie, another wildly expensive car is just a drop in the bucket, and she won't miss her hot ride one bit. A better gift for the teen would be a boyfriend who handles his business and responsibilities.

The Bachelor star Renee Oteri Maynard gives baby No. 3 two sweet names

Proving, yet again, that losing as a contestant on The Bachelor was the best thing to ever happen to her, Renee Oteri Maynard gave birth to her third baby — a healthy boy — an experience so nice she decided to name her baby twice.

Maynard married childhood crush Bruce Maynard after being eliminated by Juan Pablo Galavis in Week 8 of The Bachelor Season 18. She gave birth Wednesday to a baby boy they've named Alex Jay Maynard, but they plan on calling him A.J. And, because she's an awesome open book who won't make fans wait for the goods, Maynard has already posted a photo of her little angel.

More: The Bachelor star Renee Maynard reveals third pregnancy with stunning picture

Maynard is already mom to two boys. The former reality TV star has an 11-year-old son named Ben from a previous relationship, and she and Bruce welcomed son Jaxon in 2014. She has this whole "raising boys" gig down to a science, but one thing she and Bruce didn't have? A baby name!

"The name was decided after birth, which is something we have never done before," Maynard admitted. "Let's just say there was a minivan on the line. Serious terms. Haha!"

So, yes, Renee and Bruce struck up a sweet deal whereby he gets to purchase a minivan if she got to give baby No. 3 a traditional name. And it looks like the family will be packing themselves into a minivan before you know it because the name "Alex," which is Greek in origin and means "helper and defender of mankind," is as classic as you get. I also love the idea of giving her new baby a name that can easily be turned into a nickname with the initials A.J. There's something mysterious and fun about the name A.J. — and both his full name and nickname will carry over well into adulthood.

More: That was fast — Bachelor finalist Renee Oteri is married

Renee also admitted — and I love this — that the moment she saw her baby's face, she knew he was an "A.J." For all the moms-to-be out there struggling to come up with the perfect name, Maynard is a role model for not stressing about it. Your baby might just inspire you with his or her beautiful little face! Congrats to this couple and their gorgeous, growing family.

The way this restaurant treated my breastfeeding has made me a fan for life

$

When my son and I started our breastfeeding journey together, I wasn't quite sure what to expect as far as reactions in public. (OK, as a first-time mom, I wasn't sure what to expect, period.) Like everyone else, I had heard the horror stories. There were parents out there who were just trying to feed their kids and found themselves shamed, ridiculed and even kicked out of restaurants and other establishments for doing so. While none of my parent friends have, to my knowledge, experienced anything quite that dramatically awful, many of them have endured dirty looks from strangers that made them wish they'd just stayed home.

More: OMG! How does Michael Phelps do it all with a baby?

The first few times I breastfed in public, I was extremely nervous. But over time, I found myself getting over that. I may have just gotten lucky, but I found that most people didn't respond in any way at all. Sure, it’s still not a “normal” part of our culture for a woman to whip out her boob in public to feed her kid, but it seems like most people at least understand that she’s feeding her kid and that it’s best to keep their opinions to themselves.

Yet despite all that, on the day of his first birthday, I still found myself worrying about possible breastfeeding reactions. We were in a crowded restaurant for his birthday lunch (avocado sushi, his favorite), and there was already quite a lot of attention focused on our table. Plus, he’s large for his age, and I tend to see more negative reactions to people breastfeeding older babies than younger ones. For just a second, I wondered if it might not make more sense to tell him he had to wait, then pack up, head home and nurse him there instead. But after he finished his meal and went through the indignity of being wiped up, he desperately wanted to nurse, and it was his birthday, and I wasn’t about to deny him just to make other people more comfortable. So I took a deep breath, and we just went for it.

And just like almost every other time I have nursed him in public, there was no reaction. Or, I should say, there was no reaction I was aware of at the time.

More: You don't need to strip naked to breastfeed but kudos to the mom who did

However, a few minutes later, when I paid the bill, I received the following note from the staff:

breastfeeding note
Image: Katherine Clover

Breastfeeding can be such a fraught subject in our culture. On the one hand, new moms are under immense pressure to breastfeed, with constant “breast is best” messages from doctors and popular culture. But on the other hand, new parents receive almost no support when it comes to breastfeeding. We’re told that we should manage to breastfeed with little to no parental leave, limited pumping options and in a world that is, frankly, set up for bottle-feeding. Then we are told that if we “fail” (aka not breastfeed for as long as someone else thinks we should), then it is our fault. It’s deeply unfair. And on top of all that, many of us don’t feel comfortable and secure nursing in public, so we’re faced with choosing between denying our children nourishment and just staying home all the time.

No restaurant can stem the tide of all that, of course. However, motions in the direction of breastfeeding acceptance and support can and do help. On a personal level, I felt really touched when I read that note. It’s hard to overemphasize how powerful it can be, as a breastfeeding parent, to not only not be judged but to be outright congratulated for public nursing. It felt like acknowledgment of all the hard work I go through to feed him, work that usually goes unnoticed and unappreciated.

More: You're darn right I ate my placenta!

But that’s just me. The really powerful thing happened when I shared the note on Facebook. Even on my small friends list, it quickly racked up nearly 100 likes, and folks asked for a public version so they could share it on their own pages. People were really excited and happy to see breastfeeding supported in such a direct, no-nonsense sort of way. And much to my surprise, that excitement extended far beyond just breastfeeding parents themselves. In fact, a lot of friends who I may have assumed didn’t have any opinion on public breastfeeding liked, commented on and shared the image of the note. Giving folks the space to talk about it amplified the support and made me realize just how many people want to make public nursing safe and comfortable — for everyone.

And hey, we’ll definitely be eating there again.

How pressure-cooking is different from slow-cooking

$
0
0

Pressure cookers are becoming more mainstream, and slow cookers are here to stay. Here's what makes them different from each other and how it's possible now to save time, money and kitchen counter space with all-in-one vessels.

More: 12 reasons pressure cookers are the new slow cookers

Slow cookers are ideal for cooking at low temperatures for three to eight hours. They're great for:

  • Soups
  • Stews
  • Overnight breakfasts
  • Yogurt
  • Tamales
  • Pasta
  • Foods you don't need to eat right away
The inserts inside a slow cooker are usually ceramic. That, for me, is the biggest deterrent to using my slow cooker. I can't sear, brown, sauté or pan-fry in a slow cooker. The newer electric pressure cookers, like the Instant Pot, have a stainless steel insert, so you can sear, brown, sauté or pan-fry in them.
A pressure cooker builds up pressure to a certain point, increasing the speed at which its contents are cooked. When the pressure is built up, it’s slowly released (or sporadically released in some models). They're most often used for speed-cooking foods that normally take a very long time, for example:
  • Lentils and legumes
  • Bone broth and stock, especially if you want to use it in a recipe the same day
  • Meats you want browned then braised
  • Steel-cut oatmeal the morning of
  • Soups
  • Stews
  • Tamales
  • Pasta
  • Foods you want to eat very soon
I like to brown some meat and onions in my electric pressure cooker, make a little pasta sauce, add dry pasta and water, and voilà — I have al dente pasta in six minutes. Yes, six minutes. As you can see, there's overlap between the two kinds of cooking. In many cases it's all about whether you're a last-minute cook or a plan-ahead cook. Of course, there are now multifunction electronic units that do it all — slow-cook and pressure-cook and more.

People in the Instant Pot Facebook group I follow (not affiliated with the company, 100,000-plus members) have been giving their vessels a name as if it’s a pet or member of their family. Some have bought additional pots, cooking entire multicourse meals in them. One comment I recently saw wondered if people were this excited when the microwave was invented. Who knew a kitchen appliance could create such community?

My mom’s 20-year-old stovetop whistles on every day as she prepares basmati rice, lentil curry (dal) or dhoklas and other farsans (steamed Indian savory cakes). My heart is with mine too, as comfortable and easy as it is, but my adventurous spirit lies with the Instant Pot, a seven-in-one pot.

I just adore it for its multiple features, huge support groups with tested recipe files and its easy-to-clean aspect. I can’t help but want to experiment more and get to know it. The question is, what do I name it?

The Milwaukee rioting does not excuse your racism

Locals in Milwaukee found their city turned upside down overnight as rioters set fire to local businesses, destroyed police cars and threw rocks at the police, injuring one officer on Saturday night. Rioters were protesting the police shooting of an armed black man and were captured on video shouting "black power." Following Saturday night's violence, several people — mostly white men — have used the Milwaukee riots to justify racist comments on Twitter, insisting the Black Lives Matter movement is full of "terrorists." Given that we need #BlackLivesMatter more than ever right now, in this current time of racial inequality in the United States, that's just not OK.

Eliana tweet about racism

Eliana tweet about racism

For instance, one man tweets: "Congrats #BLM for once again acting like violent barbarians. You've proven your point: you're violent, racist, scum." Another white guy tweets: "#BLM is an awful group. They only encourage hatred and division."

More: Top 5 things people always say when someone says they're racist

It's distressing to see how many people are dismissing the Black Lives Matter movement following the Milwaukee riots, ignorantly labeling it a terrorist organization, given how needed Black Lives Matter's message still is. The Black Lives Matter movement explicitly states on its website that it is working toward peace: "We are committed to embodying and practicing justice, liberation and peace in our engagements with one another."

More: Kids talk openly about race — and it's eye opening

While there's no justification for destroying local businesses and we should oppose violence in all its forms, the frustration many feel in Milwaukee stems from a deep place and is understandable. Milwaukee is the most racially segregated city in America, and its black residents face a slew of disadvantages. When it comes to education, black children face serious setbacks — Wisconsin has the biggest achievement gap of any in the country, according to NAEP testing data. And black men in Milwaukee are also more likely than white men to spend time behind bars; by the time they enter their 30s and 40s, over half have served time, according to a report by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

After the Milwaukee riots, the Black Lives Matter movement is facing increased criticism. Co-founders Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi spoke at the BlogHer15: Experts Among Us conference about launching the movement to channel their grief and anger when George Zimmerman, the man accused of shooting teenager Trayvon Martin in 2013, was found not guilty. Tometi spoke about the fact that they're often critiqued for focusing on black lives, not all lives. "We know that all lives matter, we're well aware of that," she said. "But the reality is that anti-black violence is killing our people and it's undermining our lives at every corner, and we have to get very real and precise about what is taking place."

Don't use the Milwaukee riots as an excuse to dismiss the Black Lives Matter movement and its positive aim of ending the racial inequality and oppression black people still face in the United States. Instead, non-black people have the opportunity to be allies and support Black Lives Matter's commitment to positive values such as restorative justice, diversity and building strong families.

Man gets stood up by online date, ends up staying at the airport for 10 days

Dating can be full of disappointments.

Just ask Alexander Pieter Cirk. The 41-year-old man traveled from the Netherlands to China to meet a girl he met online, but she never showed up. According to the BBC, Cirk landed at the Changsha airport and waited for a woman named Zhang — and waited. And waited.

More: People 'fess up to the one thing that killed their crush for good

He eventually spent 10 days in the airport before he was taken to a Chinese hospital.

"Doesn't he know that everything in China is fake?" one person wrote on social media of Cirk. This wasn't an epic case of catfishing, though: The woman is real, but she had no idea he was coming and was away undergoing plastic surgery at the time.

"We had advanced our romantic relationship but later he seemed a little callous towards me," Zhang told Hunan TV about their months-long online relationship. "One day he sent me a photo of air tickets abruptly and I thought it was a joke. He didn't contact me later."

More: If you thought ghosting was shitty, benching is its older, meaner sibling

So, it sounds like Cirk just flew thousands of miles, expecting Zhang to be there.

There still might be a happy ending to this story. Zhang said she'd still like to meet her online suitor after she heals from her surgery.

Let's just hope they actually communicate about travel plans before he boards a plane this time.

ARIES (March 19 - April 18)

You're totally on your own. Whether it's leaving the nest, launching a business or taking over a position where you call the shots, it's clear that you are totally in charge of your life and the direction it's taking. So why does it feel so scary? The guilty secret of every Aries is that you like to take orders, not give them. The fact that so many eyes are on you now means that the pressure's on and that you could crumble. Thankfully, you were born under Mars, the planet of "never say never." If anyone can rise to the occasion of herself, it's you.

Be careful who you're getting into bed with business-wise on Aug. 17, when Venus trines Pluto. The planet of the Underworld, Pluto is often associated with Faustian bargains, those deals with the devil we feel we need to make in order to get ahead. You've had your fill of those lately and aren't looking for any repeat performances. Yet Pluto also rules over seeds, those kernels of potential that lie buried deep in the earth, waiting to bloom and flourish one day given the right care. This could be what you're looking at, and if so, it will be worth everything you invest in it.

People want to give you money now, and it's not for what you think. A remarkable Venus/Pluto trine on Aug. 17 shows that a client, investor or backer is convinced that you really are going places and he wants to help you get there. Hopefully, you have a product or business plan in place so you can tell him exactly what you need. And if not? You'd best come up with something because it will be a long time before the planets align as seamlessly as this again. Bear in mind that Mercury turns retrograde on Aug. 30, so you'll have to work fast.

Developments are afoot that will push you to the head of the line. It looks like a superior has overstayed his welcome, a boss has proven ineffectual or a manager will finally call it quits. In any case, you can expect a lot of shake-ups around Aug. 18. Hopefully, you want to take over the position of leadership. Not only are you a natural for it, but your name is on everyone's lips. If, however, you are feeling ambivalent about this next step up, then say so now, while there's plenty of time to search for another replacement. There will be no hard feelings.

This is the perfect time to do something out of the ordinary. Go somewhere you've never been before, sign up for a course of study you've always been curious about or embark on a new spiritual path. The Sun/Uranus trine on Aug. 16 supports any departures from the norm and encourages explorations that lead you far from the same old, same old. It may seem frivolous, but you'll actually get a lot of this. Not only will you prove to yourself that you're as adventurous as ever but you'll expand your horizons, too. The experience will prove enriching and fulfilling. What could be better than that?

A curveball from out of left field throws you for a loop on Aug 16. It's so unexpected that your first reaction will be to toss it back. You had your mind set on a certain outcome, and you aren't interested in pursuing alternatives at this point. But rethink that. The stars are giving you a unique opportunity to try something new and different, and by that, they mean spontaneous and in the moment. Put expectations aside and follow your intuition. You'll be surprised by what an extraordinary co-pilot it can be when you score a major prize or deal on Aug. 27.

This week is all about making people keep their promises. There's been a lot of vacillation lately and you've bent over backward to be accommodating, and of course, the more you accommodated, the more noncommittal others became. Interestingly, it will be someone reneging on a pledge that pushes you to hold everybody else's feet to the fire. This will have the surprise effect of prodding them into action. Perhaps zero tolerance was something you needed to practice all along. In any case, you will hear back from that person who left you holding the bag. He'll want to make it up to you.

Volatile circumstances at work are either pushing you up or pushing you out. It's hard to tell which is which when Uranus is involved because its energy is always unpredictable. Sometimes you're more principled than you want to be. It's a dilemma you'll face this week, when you're presented with the answer to your problems as long as you forfeit a claim, disavow a friendship or look the other way. Most people would happily sign on, but you were born under a moral sign. You can't help but do what's right — but even this strikes you as unfair because the cost outweighs what's at stake. Thankfully, the solution to your predicament is to give both sides some of what they want but not all. It's not the most conscionable thing to do, but it's clever.

Gabby Douglas' mom says bullies need to lay off her daughter — and we agree

U.S. Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas may have won gold medals for her country, but bullies won't give her a break.

The gymnast's mom, Natalie Hawkins, says they've been "brought to tears" over cruel comments people have made about Douglas: "She's had to deal with people criticizing her hair, or people accusing her of bleaching her skin. They said she had breast enhancements, they said she wasn't smiling enough, she's unpatriotic. Then it went to not supporting your teammates. Now you're 'Crabby Gabby,'" Hawkins told Reuters. "You name it and she got trampled. What did she ever do to anyone?"

More: Gabby Douglas replaces a boyfriend with a kitten — no, really

You have to wonder how much the bullying has affected Douglas, who just finished seventh in her final performance at the Olympics, following a mistake performing her first handstand. The bullying is nothing new. Despite the fact that Douglas was the first African American to win the individual all-around event back in 2012, many people decided to shame her over the state of her hair instead of giving her the congratulations she deserved.

Writer Tiya Miles wrote an editorial for CNN's In America in 2012, commenting on the fact that she was saddened by what came up when she googled "Gabby Douglas hair" following Douglas' gold-winning performance:  "I was dismayed to find a string of posts by African American women and men debating Douglas’ hairstyle and the perceived imperfection that while her hair was straightened, parts of it had turned visibly kinky during her performance." She stresses that people ought to have focused on the amazing feats Douglas had accomplished rather than whether or not she'd conformed to so-called beauty standards.

But many don't seem to have learned from their mistakes. Douglas is getting bullied about her physical appearance yet again as she wins another gold four years later with her team in Rio. People started trolling her once again about her hair — her edges in particular (which looked fine to me, but then again, I was more focused on her performance, because isn't that the point?).

Hawkins also called out bullies who called her daughter unpatriotic at the Olympics four years ago because Douglas stood at attention during the national anthem, but she didn't put her hand on her heart. Hawkins stressed that Douglas grew up in a military community and some of her family members have spent years serving their country in the military. "Because of that, it was so insulting that they would accuse my daughter of being unpatriotic when we are so tied to the military family," Hawkins said, adding that during the "Star-Spangled Banner," "most military members either salute or stand to attention," as opposed to placing their hands on their hearts.

Gabby Douglas tweet

It's great to see a mom going to bat for her daughter against bullies who seem to focus on everything but Douglas' history-making successes. She pointed out that those attacking her daughter have no idea just how much Douglas has on her plate: "They keep attacking her about not smiling but they don't know what she is dealing with. If they did, this would not be a conversation. They would [understand]. But this is not the time or place to tell that story."

Douglas speaks about her mother's impact on her in a tweet sponsored by Gillette Venus: "l'll never forget when my mom told me to ignore nervous energy & let my inner fierceness shine!" Those sound like great words to live by. Let's hope Douglas continues to stay focused on her goals and not the words of people who have nothing better to do than troll her from the safe comfort of their couches.

It's probably dawned on you by now that you're going through a dry spell. And even if you do have someone in your life, you'll notice that there's a conspiracy of circumstances dead set on keeping you apart despite best efforts. What's an Aries to do? Well, the reason for the incongruity is Uranus in Aries. It's the planet responsible for all the fly-by-night encounters, on-again/off-again romances and soul matings where it's all talk and no play. You can't fight the energy, but if you can accept the planet for what it has to offer, you can enjoy electrifying encounters of the exhilarating kind.

Listen: Everyone's used to you bringing home emotional strays, questionable types and hopeless cases, so can you blame them for being happy when you find someone who's truly good for you? Try tuning into what they see. You might like it.

Kevin Hart's bride gives us some serious wedding dress envy

The Internet's buzzing about Kevin Hart and Eniko Parrish's glamorous wedding, but the real showstopper is Parrish, who wore not one but two luxurious wedding dresses from Vera Wang.

Parrish looked stunning in a custom Vera Wang gown on her wedding day in Santa Barbara, which featured hand-embroidered French Chantilly lace. She wore a unique take on the "naked dress" trend, as the top of the dress looked like the revealing "naked" silhouettes we've seen on runways and rocked by celebs like Kim Kardashian. The bottom of the gown was solid silk, billowing out into a dreamy tulle skirt.

The bride also wore a beautiful custom dress by Vera Wang to celebrate after the nuptials. "For her reception, she wore a custom long-sleeve light ivory sheer lace gown with sumptuous hand-placed French Chantilly lace appliqué artfully contoured along the entire gown," wrote @VeraWangGang on Instagram. And let's hope she doesn't just pack this gorgeous gown away and preserve it, because it deserves to stay on rotation in her closet!

The "naked" wedding dress trend is definitely gaining momentum. Vera Wang has created several other breathtaking gowns with see-through details with varying degrees of modesty for their Spring 2017 Bridal Collection.

And we're not just seeing "naked" wedding dresses at celebrity weddings and on red carpet events. "This is what brides are asking for," Kleinfeld Bridal's fashion director Terry Hall told StyleCaster. “I think the days of the bride wearing her mother’s old wedding dress are over." He added, "Brides really want their own red carpet moments."

Parrish certainly had her own red carpet moment this weekend. The happy bride shared her excitement on Instagram, writing, "Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this."

RHONJ's Teresa Giudice will probably drive Melissa & Jacqueline apart

You can always count on Real Housewives of New Jersey's Teresa Giudice and Jacqueline Laurita to have an epic fight. That's exactly what happened in tonight's episode, when Teresa and Joe headed over to Jacqueline and Chris' home for dinner.

More: Joe Gorga’s belittling of Melissa Gorga on RHONJ needs to stop, stat

It was supposed to be a get-together to reconcile and start anew, but that definitely didn't happen. Unlike Chris and Joe, who were having a fabulous time bonding over some homemade wine, Tre and Jacqueline fell back into their old habit of arguing over little things that don't even matter anymore.

Similar to the conversation she had with Melissa Gorga (she brought up the past), Teresa just couldn't help but rehash what happened five years ago regarding those tabloids Jacqueline wanted to discuss on her deck. RHONJ fans remember that, right? I thought so.

Really, Teresa needs to stop bringing up the past and move forward rather than backward. However, it doesn't seem like she can help herself. While discussing the opening of Melissa's boutique, Jacqueline expressed her surprise over the fact that there wasn't any drama. Teresa was confused by her remark, and Jacqueline explained that whenever they all hang out in a group setting or at an event, something bad usually happens.

Her comments led Teresa to voice how she doesn't want toxic people in her life. Out of nowhere, she brought up her fight with Jacqueline over the magazines, how she felt like Jacqueline and Caroline ganged up on her and that her "real" friends would never have questioned her.

In typical Jacqueline fashion, she did not bite her tongue and instead defended herself. Should Jacqueline maybe have tried to shut Tre down right there and been like, "I'm not going to talk about what happened five years ago, but let's start with a clean slate"? Possibly, but she doesn't want to sweep anything under the rug and she refuses to not express her opinion. I can't blame her there. Her fights with Teresa are getting old real fast, though. Too bad they can't keep on trucking in a positive direction.

More: Siggy Flicker is the change RHONJ needed

You know it's bad when Joe Gorga is brought into the mix. That's right: Teresa said her brother told her not to trust Jacqueline back in the day. How did Jacqueline respond? By saying Joe told her not to trust Teresa. It didn't stop there, however, because Jacqueline called him for clarification. He said that he couldn't remember what he said but that it's now up to them to work everything out.

Things continued to go downhill from there, with Jacqueline saying she would have never filed a "fraudulent bankruptcy" like Teresa. That was all Teresa could take before she told Joe they were leaving. Once again, Joe and Chris go into a separate room and have a great time while their wives get into a huge argument that can't be solved.

It's clear that "Lucy and Ethel" aren't going to ever be friends again, or at least, it will take a while before they can find some common ground. Plus, this whole fight is probably going to cause even more drama. Now that Teresa and Melissa are trying to move forward, I have a feeling Jacqueline and Tre's contention will drive a wedge between Jacqueline and Melissa.

Melissa may very well choose to side with her sister-in-law and stick by her family, which then means bad blood between the Gorgas and the Lauritas. It will be too bad if that does happen, especially since Melissa and Jacqueline are pretty good friends. Based on the promo for next Sunday's episode, there is tension between Melissa and Jacqueline as they discuss the fight.

More: Teresa Giudice's RHONJ homecoming is far from sunshine and rainbows

All of this is putting Melissa in a bad position because she's trying to keep things cool with Teresa, not to mention her husband and the entire family. Plus, Jacqueline is her friend. Will she choose her friend, choose her sister-in-law or refuse to take sides and stay true to both?

Whatever happens, it's going to be messy. Would you expect anything less from Jacqueline and Teresa? Yeah, me either.

Sounds like Mark Consuelos wants Kelly Ripa to host Live! With Kelly solo

Live! With Kelly fans are anxiously waiting to see who Kelly Ripa and producers name as the new permanent on-air replacement for former co-host Michael Strahan. However, it sounds like Ripa's husband Mark Consuelos thinks she would be better off just hosting the show solo.

More: Leave it to Kelly Ripa to subtly ask JoJo & Jordan about their sex life

During a recent interview at a red carpet event, Consuelos was asked if he knew any inside information on who Live! With Kelly is planning on hiring to replace Strahan.

"You have a feeling that I know about 'Live!," Consuelos said. "No, I have no idea!"

More: Live! knows more about Kelly Ripa's future co-host than they're letting on

The actor, who has appeared a guest co-host with Ripa several times, then dropped the following interesting piece of information.

"Sometimes I think that, um, they could just ... she could," Consuelos hesitated. "I don't know. I don't know. I really don't have a clue."

It sounds like Consuelos was going to say that he thinks Ripa could just host the show solo! While letting Ripa host the show alone would differ from the program's original co-host format, we definitely think Ripa could handle hosting it all on her own.

More: Kelly Ripa finally shared the Live! spotlight with a woman — what took so long?

However, it sounds like Live's producers do want to hire a co-host and they're taking their time with the decision in order to find someone who is the perfect fit for the job.

"It's a highly coveted job. There's no other show where the co-host gets to have their name in the title of the show — you don't get that kind of prominence," an inside source told Page Six. "Just being in the mix is helpful to their careers and reputation."

According to this inside source, Live! has taken some names off the table of people who have additional commitments they might prioritize over the show, as they want someone who can fully commit to Live! for the long haul.

"Rob [Lowe], Jeff [Gordon] and Mario [Lopez] are not getting the job," the source revealed.

The Duggars' devoted followers are like no other fandom. The show has loyal fans who have watched every episode, read every blog and know all kinds of trivia about the family. But they're also some of the family's most voracious critics, worried about everything from the proper courting rituals to the treatment of the babies in the family. Now, fans are crying out over the "laziness" of the Duggar men.

More: The Duggars' first public mention of Josh since rehab didn't go well at all

As The Inquisitr points out, we rarely see the Duggar men or those who marry into the family — Josh Duggar, Ben Seewald, Derick Dillard — engage in something we all can recognize as a job. So aside from their can't-be-that-lucrative TV gig, how does this family make money?

Fans reacted to a Facebook video encouraging them to exercise, wondering when Joseph Duggar had time to become a fitness expert. "Looks like these strong and able men hang out all day and do not work. Get a job and be productive," a commenter named Jennie Jennie writes on Facebook. Catherine Cunz agrees, "Seriously, do any of these people work?"

More: Jessa Duggar just stepped into another parenting controversy — let's dive in

Before his summer of scandal, accusations of molestation and shipment out to rehab, Josh Duggar did have a job. He worked as a lobbyist for the conserative Christian organization Family Research Council. He had to resign — and there's no word on what he's doing now. As we prep for the new season of Counting On, fans seem to be wondering: How exactly are these people spending their time?
