Go ahead, spoil your sweetie on Valentine’s Day. But consider making one of these romantic treats with lower calorie counts!

Healthier options
for Valentine's Day

When it comes to romance, SheKnows really takes the cake! This year, instead of treating your sweetie to the usual romantic goodies that can be high in calories, try one with fewer calories. That’s got love written all over it!

Breakfast out vs. breakfast in bed

Breakfast in bed can be romantic and rewarding. Not only will you avoid the crowds, but you might avoid extra calories, too! Before you jump out of bed, think about this: One waffle, like the kind served at a national breakfast restaurant, will set you back about 465 calories and about 13 grams of fat. And that’s without butter, syrup or whipped cream!

Serve breakfast in bed for your sweetie! SheKnows owes this decadent recipe for vanilla-ricotta stuffed crepes with orange-maple syrup to celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito. He created this delightful dish with a tally of only 108 calories per serving. It's the perfect low-calorie, breakfast-in-bed treat!

Lifestyles of the rich who each rich candy

Almost any gal would consider herself lucky to receive a box of fancy chocolates made by a well-known chocolatier. To some, that’s the epitome of romance. Your notion of romance might change when you consider this: Two truffles from a box of high-end chocolates will set you back about 210 calories . That really adds up!

The folks at DietsinReview.com suggest following the lead of the contestants on The Biggest Loser: Try an indulgent treat of two very large, ripe strawberries generously rolled in melted dark chocolate. The total: about 91 calories. How romantic is that?

Swooning over sundaes

A sundae on a Monday with your sweetie can be a lovely treat. However, if you indulge in a medium-sized sundae from your local frozen treats shop, get ready for more than just a brain freeze: You’ll be adding about 234 calories to your day. Now is that really swoon-worthy?

Instead, DietsinReview.com suggests this recipe for frozen hot chocolate. It’s a version of one served at a popular New York restaurant. The good news: Instead of 340 calories like you’d get in the Big Apple, this version is only about 140 calories.

Reconsider eating your cake

Most of us want to have our cake and eat it, too. This romantic and tasty cake might break your heart, though: One serving of chocolate molten lava cake has approximately 390 calories !

Avoid a breakup and try this smooth and rich SheKnows dessert that allows you to indulge wisely. Not only is this recipe for warm chocolate pudding easy to make, but the calorie count is relatively low: 164 calories . Serve this with fresh fruit or even a bit of shaved chocolate on top for an extra-special treat.
