Meatless Monday: Stuffed mushroom caps

Sitting down with a group of friends to watch a game or an awards show on TV? Make a classic, meatless appetizer to enjoy!

Stuffed Mushrooms

This recipe for stuffed mushroom caps makes a great appetizer for a Meatless Monday! Instead of using traditional cheese to make this dish, we use Daiya pepperjack style shreds, a dairy-free cheese alternative. There are many varieties of Daiya product to choose from, but the pepperjack style shreds add a bit of a zing to the mushroom caps.

Daiya is a great substitute for people who follow a vegan lifestyle or those who have food allergies or sensitivity to dairy.

Stuffed mushroom caps recipe

Serves 3

Ingredients:

  • 6 small-sized portobello mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more to brush over the mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup diced onion
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/8 cup pine nuts
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/8 cup white wine
  • 2-3 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 2 fresh basil leaves, minced
  • 2-3 ounces shredded Daiya pepperjack style shreds

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Clean the mushrooms by brushing them, trim off the stems, and dice the stems.
  2. Use your fingers to lightly oil the tops and bottoms of the mushroom caps, place them in a round baking dish, bottom side up, and set them aside.
  3. Add the 1 tablespoon of olive oil to a medium saute pan over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the diced mushrooms and cook for about a minute, then add the onion and cook for 3-4 minutes longer.
  4. Add the garlic, pine nuts, salt and pepper, and mix well. Add the white wine, breadcrumbs, and fresh basil.
  5. Remove the mixture from the heat and use a spoon to stuff the mixture into the mushroom caps. Pack the mixture down, then sprinkle with the Daiya pepperjack style shreds.
  6. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until they are warmed through and the Daiya has melted.
  7. Serve warm.

Tip your hat to these stuffed mushroom caps!

Will I be single forever?

Taylor Swift admitted in a recent interview that she's worried about being single forever. Let's just say that I can relate.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's love life is a punch line now, but perhaps her serial dating might stem from her fear of being alone.

At least that's what seemed to emerge from her interview for Wonderland magazine.

"I have no idea if I'm going to get married or be single forever or have a family or just be on my own,"Swift said in the interview. "You know, paint in a cottage by the ocean by myself. I just have no idea and I'm kind of into that. You can make a board for all the goals you want in your life with the pictures on it, and that's great, daydreaming is wonderful, but you can never plan your future."

I totally understand the feeling, Tay Tay. The problem? I'm a few years older than she is, and it seems like my future is almost certain to revolve around solo trips to the grocery store and sympathetic nods from my married friends.

It all came to a terrifying head a few weeks ago. I mean, I've always had the thought of "OMG I'm 30 and 100 percent single," in the back of my mind, but somehow I always avoided worrying about it.

Until I went to a new doctor.

"So, you're not married?" the doc asked, trying to get to know me as a new patient.

"Nope," I replied.

"No husband or kids or anything?" he continued with a hint of surprise in his voice. Was the surprise that I'm so awesome and he can't believe I'm not attached? Or that he can't believe anyone my age is actually single? I couldn't decide.

"Uh no, buddy," I thought about saying. Instead, I pulled out my default response of "Someday!" and he finally dropped it.

Panic set in after that conversation. The vast majority of my friends are married with children, but I'm completely single with no real prospects on the horizon.

Am I really that weird to be single?

Did I mention I'll be 31 in less than two months? Yeah, so there's that.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not desperate and won't make any rash decisions just to have someone in my life. I've never been that way. Still, I can't help but have that feeling at the back of my mind like "When's my turn?" or "Will I ever have a turn?"

At least Taylor Swift knows how I feel.

New mysteries unfold when Norman Bates discovers a kidnapped girl in Deputy Shelby's basement in the creepy fun new series on A&E.

Norman uncovers a dangerous secret

It's safe to say things have not been going well for young Norman Bates who is fleeing Arizona with his mother . Aside from covering up the murder of his mother's rapist, he has now discovered a kidnapped young girl in the basement of a local police officer's home. The very same cop, Deputy Shelby , who has a thing for his dear mom.

Former child star turns into psycho for Bates Motel>>

Danger certainly lies ahead when he tells his mom about his discovery and she refuses to believe him. It's a pretty horrific thought, but I think she may have a thing for the handsome young lawman that she's not admitting. It looks like things are going to get pretty steamy between the two this season, but is she just using him for protection? And is Norman going to freak the freak out when he finds out about the couple? He does seem to have an unhealthy infatuation with his mama .

Enter the Bates Motel>>

Worse yet, when Norma does go to explore Deputy Shelby's basement she doesn't find any signs of a kidnapped, drugged up teen. Did Norman dream the whole thing? He has been having some crazy hallucinations lately. Maybe he convinced himself it was real because he's been on the hunt for the missing Asian girl from the pornographic diary he found.

Or, maybe the innocent-faced Deputy knew Norman was snooping around his apartment, feared he found the girl and got rid of her. Ah the mysteries!

Unless you have a toddler who’s a divalicious model-in-training, you’re probably dealing with a camera-phobic, always-in-motion, strong personality. Unless you have a toddler who’s a divalicious model-in-training, you’re probably dealing with a camera-phobic, always-in-motion, strong personality. You can get frame-worthy, professional-looking shots with less frustration and more fun.

Creativity is in order, as well as patience and the acceptance that you may have to take 50 shots to get one good one – but it’s just that one magic image that matters, right?

Toddlers are busy people with more important things to do than stop and pose for your camera. But it’s not impossible to get an amazing photo. Be appreciative of the stage these little ones are in and be inspired by it. “Two- and three-year-olds have the best natural energy and follow their own impulses,” says professional photographer Sarah Sloboda. Follow their lead, mellow out and get silly. “Your toddler feeds off your energy. If you act like it's all play, it will be,” she says.

Check out these multitasking cameras for active families>>

Some parents may think they don’t have the artistic eye to get a good shot of their toddler, but you don’t have to be a professional photographer to snap that magical photo. Just follow some simple dos and don’ts, and always remember that technology is on your side.

Look at these great photography apps for the iPhone>>

What not to do when taking photos of your toddler

Child in a tree

Don’t go to the playground: Moving swings, distracting jungle gyms — playgrounds make for complicated compositions. “Simple backgrounds are excellent for toddlers — then their rambunctious energy is the star of the photo, instead of a bold, red monkey bar,” says Sloboda. Aim for wide open fields or a deserted part of the beach.

Don’t be the adult: “Always get down to their level by sitting on the floor or grass,” says children’s photographer, Maureen Ford. “Playing with your child before you try to take a photo is a great way to change a ‘no’ attitude to one that yields genuine smiles and expressions.” Jump in the puddles, splash the paint — go ahead and get messy. It can also help to have an “assistant” along to engage your child while you snap away.

Don’t be a director: “Don't ask your toddler to smile, sing a song or look at the camera. Ask a question and they'll look right at you. Follow them around and document what they find interesting,” says Sloboda. Avoid trying to pose your kids too. "The more you try, the more they’ll resist and do exactly the opposite. Leading them works much better,” says photographer Deborah Israeli. Simply talking to your child, singing songs or asking questions about her favorite things will animate and delight her.

Don’t ignore the light: “Deciding how to use light is a huge part of what gives photos their vibe,” says Sloboda. “The angle of the light should be at your back, not the child's.” Natural light is your BFF, so head outdoors for a variety of stimulation and photo ops whatever the season. “If photographing in your home, try to use a big window for good light — west-facing window in the morning, east-facing window in the afternoon,” recommends Israeli.

Must-dos when taking photos of your kids

Adorable toddler

Do hold still: Your toddler’s in constant motion, so it’s your job to master the art of keeping the camera steady to avoid a blur. “I take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds while snapping several frames, bracing my elbows against my body,” says Sloboda. “This keeps my wrists loose to change angles quickly, without straining, stretching or creating camera-shake.”

Do stash the toys: A home with a toddler is a home with lots of stuff, but those beloved items can ruin a good photo. “Shoot with a clean background. Don’t have a mess of toys or clutter in the background,” says Tiffany Angeles, professional children’s photographer.

Do bend the rules: Never let your kids climb the furniture? Photo time may be just the occasion to let mischief reign. “Have them stand on something a little higher but safe — like the couch — or step into a basket or sit on a big ball,” says Ford. “This will hold them in place a little longer for you to grab your shots, as the child will be busy thinking about what he or she is doing.”

Do get silly: “Giving kids the ‘wrong answer’ is usually good for a laugh,” says Angeles. “’Does a duck say meow?’ or ‘Is my hair pink?’ Having a wand or long toy in one hand and bopping yourself on the head with a loud ‘ouch’ almost always gets a giggle. You can also play peek-a-boo and get great shots when they come around the corner.”

"Simple, wooden toys make great photo props and toddlers will love playing with them..."

Do go for the action shot: Be ready to photograph your child quickly and continuously as they run toward you and away from you. “These action scenarios can yield great photos while showcasing what this stage of life is about — fast, fun energy!” says Ford.

Do use props: “Props can help your child relax and keep him or her busy while you take photos. Hand over a favorite teddy bear or toy,” says Ford. “Simple, wooden toys make great photo props and toddlers will love playing with them, allowing you to capture some natural, enthusiastic images and create a controlled environment. A large, colorful candy lollipop makes for a great prop at the end of a session, when everyone is getting cranky,” says Israeli.

Do get stealthy: Israeli has two words for the parent of a really uncooperative toddler: Scotch tape. “Taking a piece of clear plastic tape and putting it on the palm of their hand will stop them in their tracks.” It’s not visible and you can snap your toddler in a moment of intense and sweet concentration.

Technology is your photo friend

If your smartphone is attached to your hip just like your toddler, it’s time to make that machine really work for you.

Download all the free photo editing apps you can find — they’ll allow you to edit even a mediocre shot into a work of art, whether you want vintage, modern or otherwise. Photographers and parents alike recommend Pixlromatic, Pixlr Express, Pic Stitch, InstaCollage, PicsArt, and, of course, Instagram .

If you are considering becoming a serious mobile-photography parent, the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone offers image stabilization, low light performance and the photo apps Fhotoroom and Apict.

Sloboda is a big fan of the iPhone, which is low-light friendly, has no delay, offers rapid-fire shooting abilities and accommodates accessories like the olloclip photo lens which attaches to your phone and lets you take fisheye, wide-angle and macro shots.

"Just remember," says Ford, “It's not about the perfect pose. It's about capturing the energy and personality of your little one at this moment in time."

Linda Cardellini on her shocking Mad Men appearance

Almost unrecognizable beneath vintage styling and a wig, Linda Cardellini of Freaks and Geeks and ER landed on Mad Men's sixth season in a role that horrified fans. Beware: Spoilers ahead.

Linda Cardellini at the Independent Spirit Awards show

Linda Cardellini was on Sunday's Mad Men. But you shouldn't beat yourself up if you didn't recognize her.

The formerly fresh-faced lead of cult TV series Freaks and Geeks, and Nurse Samantha Taggart on ER was buried under heavy period eyeliner and a poofy wig, and not even her friends and family members had been told she was going to be on the show.

Her role? A real heartbreaker: A neighbor and seeming pal of Don and Megan, who, it turns out, has been sleeping with Don for some time.

Oof! Don's cheating again!

Guess which Mad Men stars are engaged>>

Cardellini told Entertainment Weekly that she hoped fans wouldn't hold her role against her. "You know, the hard thing about audiences not liking what a character does is that they sometimes take it out on the actor personally and that's something that you know when you become an actor or actress, but it's always hard to deal with when it actually happens," she said.

Yep. Just ask Larry Hagman of Dallas fame, or, you can't actually ask him because he's passed away, but he famously told a story about being smacked in real life by a female fan who took offense to his double-dealing character J.R. Ewing in the 1970s.

Jockey offers Jon Hamm free undies for life >>

Cardellini felt at home on the Mad Men set because she'd been in movies with Vincent Kartheiser and John Slattery , but she knew her role would upset fans, just as she did with her part on Boy Meets World, as a girl who comes between Cory and Topanga: "I hadn’t really watched that show. I was just so excited to have a job on television and I really didn’t realize how vehemently people would react to my breaking them up. People are still mad about it!" she told Entertainment Weekly.

She also noted that unlike other shows where the atmosphere would be looser and a certain amount of improv was the done thing, that's not the case on Mad Men: "It's very precise, and you may not even understand the part that you’re playing in the bigger picture. You do precisely what is instructed in terms of what is worded perfectly and what is in the stage directions."

And she didn't know where her relationship with Don is going any more than the audience does: "Matt never gives it away! The secretive part isn’t only for the audience. It’s for everybody around set," she said. "There are not that many jobs as an actor where you don’t get to know what [your] character will be doing from episode to episode. It’s sort of a giant unknown and you go along and trust. I think that’s what’s really special about Mad Men."

Trisha Yearwood's figure steals the show at the ACM Awards

Trisha Yearwood showed up at Sunday's ACM Awards with a new figure and outlook on life. While she is watching what she eats, she isn't staying away from the Southern food she loves so much.

Trisha Yearwood

With all the glitz and glamour of the Academy of Country Music Awards, a surprise guest stole the attention away from many country and music stars. Country singer Trisha Yearwood had everyone looking with her new slimmed down look.

Top performances of the 2013 ACM Awards>>

The weight loss wasn’t by accident though. Yearwood has become somewhat of a food connoisseur. She hosts a show, Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, on the Food Network and has written multiple cookbooks. She recently said that she tries to avoid sugar, but does let herself eat mac and cheese “once in a while.”

Yearwood spoke with People back in February at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival about her weight loss.

"I've been dieting and exercising and I've lost about 20 pounds," she told the magazine, according to USA Today.

Trisha Yearwood goes from singer to foodie>>

The important part of Yearwood’s plan is that she knows she is just human, and does what she can to not overindulge, while still enjoying food.

"Real people battle their weight," she said. "We all struggle between eating healthy and falling off the wagon. That's how I live!"

Yearwood’s husband Garth Brooks performed at Sundays ACM Awards along with George Strait, and he is a supporter of her new career. He will join her on her TV show Thursday, April 11.

“One of the ways she has done that is by mixing it up and making exercising fun,” Yearwood’s spokesperson told the L.A. Times. “As the host of Trisha's Southern Kitchen, she still makes her traditional recipes like mac and cheese and country quiche, but those dishes are balanced with the moderation she has always spoken about."

Lots of sparkle and shine at the 2013 ACM Awards>>

The country singer’s body-hugging dress was designed by Stella McCartney for the ACM Awards show. But after the ceremony is over, she will return to her day job, teaching America how to enjoy what you eat, even while watching your weight.

Nanny share

Want a nanny, but without the burden of the expense? Consider a nanny share! In most cases, a nanny share is when more than one family uses a nanny to care for their kids at the same time.

Sharing a nanny
with another family

With a nanny share, one nanny could watch your 2-year-old and another family's 2-year-old together at one of your houses. Find out more about nanny shares and hear from two families who did and did not have a nanny share work as a childcare solution.

How a nanny share works

There are a couple of ways that people use the term "nanny share." On occasion, a nanny share is when two families essentially time-share one nanny — for example, our family uses her for our children on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and your family uses her on Tuesday, Thursday. However, the more common way a nanny share is used is when two families combine their childcare efforts, hiring one nanny to watch a combination of children from those families, at the same time. For example, one nanny would watch both of our 2-year-olds, at the same time, usually on the same schedule.

"As easy of a solution as having a nanny share may seem, it takes mindful planning to be successful."

Nanny shares have become increasingly more popular in the past five years, with a turn in the economy. People who want to have a nanny for their child , but who can't necessarily afford to carry the burden themselves, have found nanny shares to be a good solution.

As easy of a solution as having a nanny share may seem, it takes mindful planning to be successful. Not only do you want to make sure that you have a nanny that can handle multiple children, from multiple families at one time, making sure that the kids are a good fit and that your parenting philosophies line up with the other family's parenting philosophies are key. In addition, logistical details such as whose house they'll be at, what happens if one child is sick and vacation time need to be discussed before launching into a nanny share relationship with another family.

Let's talk money

Financially, there's no doubt that sharing a nanny with another family will benefit your pocketbook. While the nanny may be getting paid more to watch multiple children — for example $15 an hour to watch two kids, instead of $12 to watch one — you'll still be paying less because you'll be splitting the new $15-an-hour fee with the other family, making your share $7.50 an hour.

Keep in mind that the split in cost may not always be equal with another family. If you have two children being cared for, and they have one, you'll need to carry two-thirds of the cost. Or, if you have an infant and they have a toddler, you should be pitching in more Sometimes, the family whose house is used pays less as well and same goes for the family who may offer up their car for the nanny to use to drive the children to the zoo or preschool in the afternoons.

Don't forget to discuss employment taxes with the other family — depending on where you live, the rules about paying for childcare in your home vary and the way the taxes need to be paid each month, year or quarter may also vary depending on if you or a parent in the other home is self-employed. There are services to help you navigate these complicated waters, such as The Nanny Tax Company.

Why a nanny share worked for us

The first family we talked to had been in a nanny share situation since their first daughter was an infant and although they are using a different nanny now, they are still in the same nanny share relationship with a family that they met at the park .

"I think the success in our nanny share comes from not being best friends with the other family."

Now, five years later, their nanny share situation includes their two kindergarteners , a 3-year-old brother from one family and an 18-month-old sister from the other. "I think the success in our nanny share comes from not being best friends with the other family. For us and for them, this is more of a business relationship than anything," the mom shares. "The kids, on the other hand, certainly are best friends — more like siblings, really — as they have spent nearly every day of their lives together."

Why we left our nanny share

"It just wasn't for us," a different mom candidly tells us, regarding the nanny share that her family was using. "Although it seemed like a great idea, both financially and for our kids to have built-in play dates, I didn't feel like I had enough control over the direct care of my children." She explains that they came into a nanny share that was an already established nanny-family relationship. The other family had an older child starting elementary school, as well as a 2-year-old and had a pre-existing nanny who had been with them for years. "I felt like the nanny put the other children first, since she'd been with them longer and that since we were the ones who came in later, it was hard to change the ways that they were already doing things to fit the needs of my kids as well." In addition, this mom shares that being at someone else's home all day was just too stressful on her young children.

Jackie Robinson revealed: 42 Facts about #42

The cinematic life story of legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson hits theaters today in the film 42, just a few days shy of April 15's "Jackie Robinson Day." In celebration of the barrier-breaking Major Leaguer, we dug up 42 facts about baseball's iconic #42.

Trophy at the Jackie Robinson Awards Dinner

1. This Southern boy was born in Cairo, Georgia, on Jan. 31, 1919.

2. Jackie wasn’t always such a straight arrow — he joined a neighborhood gang when his family moved to Pasadena, California, and began acting out. Ultimately, his mentors helped him see the error of his ways.

3. Go Bruins! UCLA counts Jackie as an alumnus… almost. Financial hardship forced him to drop out shortly before graduation.

4. Coming from a family of sharecroppers, Jackie was hard-wired for hard work.

5. Got mail? Jackie was the first Major League Baseball player to grace a U.S. postage stamp.

6. Jackie met his wife, Rachel Isum, while at UCLA.

7. Jackie’s number — #42, of course! — was the first one retired for every team by Major League Baseball. The honor occurred 50 years after he became the first African-American major leaguer.

8. When Jackie won MLB Most Valuable Player in 1949, it was no joke. That year, he led the National League in both batting average and stolen bases, helped the Dodgers win the pennant and was tapped for his first All-Star game.

9. No lefty here… Jackie batted and threw right-handed.

10. Jackie owes much of his success to his mom, Mallie, who raised Jackie and his four other siblings singlehandedly.

11. His athletic prowess wasn’t limited to baseball — he was the first four-sport varsity letter winner in UCLA’s history. His sports? Football, track, basketball and, naturally, baseball.

12. In 1955, Jackie contributed to the Dodgers winning the World Series.

13. Batter up! The infielder retired with a career batting average of .311.

14. Before making it to the big leagues, Jackie played semi-professional ball in Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Honolulu Bears.

15. Jackie’s middle name is downright presidential — it’s Roosevelt!

16. Jackie served his country as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1942–1944.

17. It was during his stint in the Army that Jackie was arrested and, subsequently, court-martialed for taking a stand against segregation on a bus during training.

18. When Jackie first started playing professional ball in 1944, the popular pastime was still segregated.

19. His first team in the “Negro League” was the Kansas City Monarchs.

20. Branch Rickey — played by Harrison Ford in the move 42— hand-picked Jackie from the Negro Leagues to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers, thereby beginning to integrate the Major Leagues.

21. Jackie and his wife Rachel bore three children: Jackie Jr., Sharon and David.

22. Jackie first hit the field in 1946 with the all-white Montreal Royals, Brooklyn’s farm team.

23. Here’s to you, Mr. Robinson! April 15, the date Jackie played his inaugural game for the Dodgers, has since been declared Jackie Robinson Day.

24. It was the first time an African-American had ever played in the major leagues.

25. By the close of Jackie’s first season, he’d already racked up the title of National League Rookie of the Year.

26. At the time of Jackie’s debut in the Majors, #42 was 27 years old.

27. Who’s laughing now? When Jackie first began playing, he suffered harassment from spectators and even his teammates.

28. Not to mention the competition! Ben Chapman, manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, joined his team’s players in yelling derogatory terms at Jackie.

29. Hey, not all managers gave the sport a bad name! Dodgers’ manager Leo Durocher remained steadfastly loyal to Jackie throughout his career.

30. In a gesture of kindness now famed in baseball’s storied past, Dodgers shortstop Pee Wee Reese put his arm around Jackie in a show of solidarity when fans were harassing #42.

31. A lucky dozen, indeed! Jackie hit 12 home runs in his very first year in the major leagues.

32. Did you see Jackie Robinson hit that ball? That popular song could also have been titled, “Did you see Jackie Robinson steal that base?” The speedster set a league record with 19 career stolen bases.

33. Jackie was the precursor for today’s big-ticket baseballers: During his heyday, he became the Dodgers’ highest-paid athlete in the franchise’s history.

34. A civil rights activist, Jackie filled his time with much more than baseball. He spoke out openly against discrimination— including calling out the Yankees for being all-white years after he broke the color barrier.

35. Jackie played in the Major League from 1947–1956.

36. No ifs, and, or nuts about it: The American hero most definitely went to work as an executive for Chock Full O’ Nuts coffee company after retiring from baseball.

37. In 1962, Jackie enjoyed another first — becoming the first African-American inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

38. Jackie’s legacy lives on through the Jackie Robinson Foundation started by his wife, Rachel, to help provide scholarships and mentoring to youths in need.

39. Sibling rivalry, anyone? Jackie wasn’t the only athlete in his family — brother Matthew won silver in the 200-meter dash at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

40. In his career, Jackie racked up 1,518 hits and a whopping 137 home runs.

41. Jackie formed a special bond with a rival player — Pittsburgh Pirates' Hank Greenberg. The two related to each other over their shared struggles — Hank, the first major Jewish major league player, suffered anti-Semitic abuse.

42. An inspiration to this day, Jackie believed in making his life count. He is famously quoted as saying, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."

Rumor has it Holmes plotted the split for months while pretending everything was right as rain in her marriage while Cruise was around. The reason? Cruise was purportedly ready to fully indoctrinate their daughter Suri into Scientology, and Holmes was not having it.

After their lawyers breezed through negotiations, Holmes wound up with custody of Suri in exchange for receiving very little, if any, of Cruise's vast fortune.

Nicole Kidman opens up about Tom Cruise: "I was naive">>

But Cruise, who was also married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman , says it's all par for the course in this theatrical production we call life.

"Life is a challenge," he said. "To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you — that's what life is… Life is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humor."

May we have a show of hands for those of you who are secretly crushing on Kid Rock? Okay, so maybe just my sister and I have our hands in the air. But if you agree with Sis and me, you have one more reason to fall in love with KR.

Hookin' a sister up

Read about his big announcement, and why it may piss off some of his contemporaries…

Kid Rock is kicking off his Rebel Soul tour like a devil without a cause. He’s sticking it to the system and in an unprecedented act of loyalty to his fans — who he knows may be suffering from difficult economic times — he's setting his summer concert ticket prices at $20. Our favorite “Lowlife” told Billboard, “Artists demand so much money, and you have to set ticket prices at [a certain level]. Everyone's fighting the system, and it's really been all of our faults. We're all fortunate to make as much money as we do, and I can surely take a pay cut and help out in these hard times.” These deeply discounted seats will apply to anywhere in the venue, and Kid isn’t stopping there. He’s lobbying for $4 beers and $20 t-shirts. It seems KR hasn’t forgotten what it’s like to struggle financially, though some of his peers may have.

Just because a gal has broken up, AH-gain, with her bad-boy boyfriend Chris Brown doesn't mean she can't make boatloads of cash. If you want to see RiRi this summer, you'd better hurry. Her last U.S. stop is Boston on May 6, and shows are $80–$400.

Justin Timberlake, the delightful piece of man-candy that he is, is another musician we do our hair and makeup for if we know he's going to be on TV. For now, we'll have to stick to watching him on YouTube because his summer concert ticket prices range between $115–$1675. I guess we could always not eat or pay our bills for a month.

It's not a question of whether or not we love Pink. She's got attitude, kick a** music, and Try may be one of the coolest videos made in recent history. Most of Pink's tour doesn't get underway until October 2013, but if we want to make her August 3 show in Troutdale, Oregon, at $80–$210 a pop, we'd better start saving now. We can see KR four times at least at that price!

Ever since Justin Bieber started collapsing on stage and canceling concerts, we're not sure we'd be down for paying $75 – $3000 for a ticket to one of his shows. Interestingly, the bulk of Justin's tickets fall in the $75–$90 range, but how much can 12-year-olds be expected to pay to see the Biebs? That's a whole lot of babysitting money right there.

How to explain autism to curious children

Child with autism

What’s wrong with her?

If your child stares, points or asks indiscreetly, “What’s wrong with that kid?” don’t feel ashamed. April is Autism Awareness Month so instead of shrinking with embarrassment, take advantage of that teachable moment and turn awkward exchanges into awareness-raising opportunities for our youngest generation.

“What’s wrong with her?” As a mother of a child diagnosed with severe autism, I am asked multiple variations of this question by other children regularly, usually to the mortification of their mothers.

If your child inquires a bit too loudly about another child’s differences, the reflexive response may be to duck the conversation, mumble an apology, reprimand your child’s poor manners, or whisk them away nonchalantly. Trust me — the awkwardness becomes more magnified for the other parent whose child is under scrutiny. Additionally, the message you’re conveying to your child is to avert his or her gaze and ignore the people we don’t understand; pretending they aren’t there.

Our own comfort level around neurodiverse individuals speaks volumes to our children. Mothers of all children can turn these missed opportunities into teachable moments that foster understanding and acceptance by using the tips below.

Take the lead

If possible, initiate an interaction when your child is curious. You will be amazed at how mutually beneficial and gratifying this first step can be. Simply start the conversation the way you would with anyone; people are people!

Be respectful

Remember, there are no universally-accepted rights and wrongs because everyone has different personalities. What one mother might appreciate, another mother could take offense to. Therefore, just be respectful and sincere. Almost all mothers appreciate any attempt as long as it’s born of kindness.

Make some acknowledgment

The goal is not necessarily to “say the right thing” but just say something. The parent of a child with autism often feels marginalized, misunderstood and/or judged when in public. Therefore, any eye contact, acknowledgment and positive conversation is typically welcomed.

Foster a connection

Introduce the two children. Encourage a greeting, even if it ends up being one-sided. Face-to-face interactions demystify all perceived differences.

Focus on the similarities

More important than identifying the diagnostic label is our ability to focus on strengths and commonalities rather than deficits and differences. Point out a pretty hair bow, a cool pair of light-up sneakers or other trait or interest. “Oh look, he likes the slide too! Maybe you can show each other how fast you each slide?”

Be sensitive

Choose your words carefully. Blogger and author Stephanie Nielson, scarred from burns on over 80 percent of her body, tells a story of a man who approached her with his child asking bluntly, “My son wants to know what’s wrong with you.” The man likely thought he was doing the right thing, yet his brash manner left Nielson feeling humiliated and sad.

Debrief privately

Talk to your child afterwards, perhaps in the car on the drive home. It’s important to educate young children on social etiquette, especially if he or she was pointing or staring or asking questions loudly. This conversation should be instructive, not punitive. Offer alternative suggestions for next time he or she sees someone different and has questions. Practice with a fun role play.

Creating meaningful interactions between typical children and their neurodiverse peers fosters a community that embraces differences and teaches acceptance to our future adults. The more positive we make these interactions, the more we all learn to celebrate and embrace the uniqueness of everyone.

Kanye West sued for "Gold Digger" sample

Nope, it's not the estate of Ray Charles that's suing Kanye West for building a song around Charles' 1954 hit "I Got a Woman." Listen carefully and you can hear the object of the suit in the 2005 recording of "Gold Digger."

Kim and Kanye West in black

The offspring of a musician sampled in Kanye West's 2005 hit "Gold Digger" are suing the singer for damages and want an injunction to stop the sale of the song.

And no, it's not Ray Charles' kids, even though the soul singer's "I Got a Woman" is the front-and-center sample used in "Gold Digger." You know, it's the "she gives me money… when I'm in need." That sample's not in dispute, although one could argue that the Ray Charles estate had a case against the daddy of Kim Kardashian's baby.

Trena Steward and Lorenzo Pryor are the offspring of late musician David Pryor, who recorded an obscure song called "Bumpin' Bus Stop" with his band Thunder & Lightning in 1974, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's new love shack>>

West hasn't admitted sampling "Bumpin' Bus Stop," but if you listen to both songs, it does sound like Pryor's voice echoing "get down" after West croons the lines "Get down, girl, go ahead, get down" and Charles' voice calls back "I gotta leave."

Why did the Pryor family wait eight years to launch a suit? No one's telling. Kinda seems like it would have made sense to do this back when "Gold Digger" was a number-one hit.

Kim Kardashian talks about raising a biracial child>>

Sampling has been an area of controversy in the musical world for decades, with some judges ruling that even extensive sampling is fair use, as when the 1980s band 2 Live Crew used parts of Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman." In other cases the defendants of sampling suits have been ordered to pay damages, like when Vanilla Ice had to give songwriting credit to Freddie Mercury and David Bowie when he used their "Under Pressure" to create his 1981 song "Ice Ice Baby."

What makes a great lobster roll?

Don’t ever accept a lobster roll on an un-toasted bun. Never take a bite of a lobster roll that has less than an inch of height from top of lobster chunks to roll. Never eat a lobster roll on anything other than a buttered hot dog bun? Never add anything to a perfect lobster roll, not even Sriracha.
Lobster roll

The simpler, the better!

We've heard it all: Never eat a lobster roll on an un-toasted bun. Never take a bite of a lobster roll that has less than an inch of height from top of lobster chunks to roll. Never eat a lobster roll on anything other than a buttered hot dog bun. Never add anything to a perfect lobster roll, not even Sriracha.

Setting the record straight

Countless pieces of advice could be given on what a lobster roll should and should not be and we're here to set the record straight. There are two traditional rolls: butter-based and mayonnaise-based. History says that the butter-based rolls are the original lobster rolls, starting after 1912 when the first soft buns made their debut at state fairs. Warm lobster meat tossed in drawn butter and served on a hot bun is called a "lobster roll" and when the cold lobster meat is folded in with mayonnaise and served on a warm, buttered bun, it is called a "lobster salad roll."

Choose wisely

When choosing your lobsters, make sure to give them a good squeeze. Soft-shell lobsters mean that they have recently molted, will have less meat and will most likely be waterlogged. Squeeze them and find the hard-shells for a meatier creature. Pick the liveliest of the bunch, the ones that will fight for their lives; these are most likely the newest in the tank.

Steam or boil?

Try steaming to prevent getting more water in them. This will also result in firmer, large chunks of meat. Cook them, season while still warm and chill. Ideally you'll be served cool, sweet lobster meat on a hot, buttered hot dog bun . Serve with chips and a cold Sam Adams brew, and you're ready to start your summer season!

Seasonal eats

Restaurants on Cape Cod serve up lobster rolls by the thousands by the time the season ends in October. The amount of lobster meat that has been cooked, cleaned, tossed and served has to be in the hundreds of thousands of pounds. One of the most well-known lobster rolls on Martha's Vineyard can be found at Grace Church in Vineyard Haven. Starting May 1 and serving rolls all the way until the end of September, it was been voted the No.1 place by islanders for many years! Sale of lobster rolls is Grace Church's primary fundraising activity for local outreach ministries. Oh, and guess what? Grace Church only uses three ingredients in their rolls: lobster meat, mayonnaise and white pepper! Next time you're on Martha's Vineyard, head to Vineyard Haven and delight your senses with a few rolls!

What do others have to say?

We went to Twitter and asked chefs and food bloggers about their ideal lobster roll. Here are their delicious answers, in 140 characters or less!

  • @RichardBlais: hot toasted overly buttered roll, knuckles only, mayo, tarragon,  celery, lemon, s&wp!
  • @chefmingtsaiMaine lobster, wasabi aioli, crunchy celery, scallions, lemon juice s&p Keep it simple!
  • @HungryNative: A buttered & griddled New England style hot dog roll overstuffed w/ lightly mayo'd lobster meat, light in the claw meat please.
  • @freshnewengland: plain & simple: fresh lobster w drawn butter on a homemade roll

Chris Brown and Rihanna both partying after breakup

The controversial romance between the two singers is reportedly on hold as both Rihanna and Chris Brown go out clubbing and flirting.

Rihanna leaving a clothing store

Both Rihanna and Chris Brown had a great weekend, apparently. They just didn't have it together.

Brown told a Los Angeles radio station DJ in March that he and Rihanna were no longer together, and Page Six reports that over Easter weekend he met a "beautiful New York waitress" at NYC nightclub Finale.

A source told Page Six, "They hit it off and headed out together. They also spent Easter Sunday together."

Chris Brown hopes no one else is "hitting" Rihanna>>

An entirely different waitress, this one in Los Angeles' Playhouse nightclub, was photographed over the weekend holding Brown's hand, but she told TMZ that she's just Brown's waitress. "Nothing has ever happened. I just work there. In the photos, he was handing me a bottle to drink out of. Of course people are going to twist it another way. I don’t go for black guys."

She also says she's not racist, it's just a "dating preference." Um, yeah.

Meanwhile, Rihanna was photographed in the chichi Greystone Manor Supperclub in West Hollywood Monday night. TMZ reports that she arrived at 1 a.m. with her assistant and security guard, hung out by herself for a while, and then left after about an hour.

Chris Brown booed at New York Knicks game>>

The morning after she posted a photo of her legs in bed, wearing the same Tom Ford shoes that she'd been out in the night before.

She gave the photo the caption, "Evidence of an epic night!!! #wokeupinmyTomFordes," the New York Post reported. Now if that's not a barb to an ex, I don't know what.

Brown also appeared in court Friday, accused of not completing the community hours required when he pleaded guilty to felony assault of Rihanna. The matter's been put off until June 10 so attorneys can gather more information. Rihanna, who attended his last court date, was absent this time, the New York Post notes.

And the Rihanna and Chris Brown show grinds on.

4 Stress-less tips for working moms

Stressed? Feeling guilty? These feelings are just part of being a mom — especially if you are working full time. But there is no need for you to let your worries or feelings of guilt get in your way of being both a great mom and employee.
Working mom with baby

Stressed? Feeling guilty? These feelings are just part of being a mom — especially if you are working full time. But there is no need for you to let your worries or feelings of guilt get in your way of being both a great mom and employee.

Managing family
and work

It's no surprise that moms who work full time jobs feel the strain of their extra-busy lives. In fact, 99 percent of working mothers say their schedules stress them out.

It is natural to feel guilty about leaving your kids with a caretaker or to feel overwhelmed about keeping your boss, clients and family happy. Take action to stomp out some of that stress and manage your guilt during Stress Awareness Month and all year long.

1

Share the load

More often these days, dads are stepping in to take on parenting duties. A recent study by the Families and Work Institute found that fathers spend an hour more a day with their kids than dads did 25 years ago. Dad's participation can come in especially handy when the kids get sick or when you just cannot make that parent-teacher conference. So when it comes to parenting, don't hesitate to share the load of responsibilities with your partner.

2

Make your schedule flexible

If you're feeling super stressed, ask your employer about rearranging your schedule so that you work four days instead of five, or have every other Friday off. This may incur a pay cut, but it might be worth it to strike that delicate balance between your career and kids. But if a flexible schedule is not feasible, try to pick one evening or weekend day when you can focus solely on your family. That means turn off the laptop, leave your cell at home and hit the playground. In addition to being a stellar mom, this play time away from the job will recharge your batteries, and you can return to work fresh and less stressed.

3

Find perspective

If you are at work right now, you're probably wishing you were at home. But guess what? You may not be that much more satisfied if you stayed at home full time. According to Dr. Leon Hoffman, director of the Pacella Parent Child Center, many working mothers wish they were home with their children, and while at home, wish they were back at work. Bottom line? Being a mom is a tough job, no matter how you slice it. But if you gain perspective on your situation and are confident about why you're working , you can get through even the toughest days with less guilt.

4

Stress less for the kids

Here is some good news for working moms. Research shows that children who go to daycare are not destined for delinquency. A study measuring the development of more than 6,000 children found that those with moms who work outside the home experience no permanent damage because of the maternal absence. And according to Ellen Galinsky, president of the Families and Work Institute, more kids prefer to have their parents be less stressed out and tired than actually with them 24/7.

In a recent issue of The American Psychoanalyst, Galinsky writes,"Does this finding mean that children do not care about time? No. Children care about parents being less stressed because they do care about the time spent together." So instead of worrying about the number of hours you spend at home, focus instead on having fun with your family when you are with them.

Robsten & other 2013 MTV Movie Awards snubs

$

The 2013 MTV Movie Awards definitely demonstrated that a new guard is being ushered in. After years of dominating the show, the Twilight cast finds themselves with only one nomination this year.

When the nominations for the 2013 MTV Movie Awards came out on March 5, there were a lot of fans screaming about the snubs this year, particularly for the Twilight cast. The Twilight movies have ruled the MTV Movie Awards for years now, so it is proving that the guard is changing as the epic series comes to a conclusion.

SheKnows takes a closer look at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards snubs:

Robsten

MTVMovieAwardsTwlight

Better known as Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, this real-life and film couple is always a shoo-in for Best Kiss. This year, movies like Django UnchainedMoonrise KingdomSilver Linings PlaybookThe Perks of Being a Wallflower and Ted scored the big nominations in this category. Could the real life drama with the on-again, off-again situation between Robsten and the Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders have affected their nomination chances? Fans are still speculating as to why this snub happened at all.

Magic Mike

MTVMovieAwardsMagicMike

While the film received three nominations including Best Musical Moment and Best Male Performance, how is it that only Channing Tatum received a nomination for Best Shirtless Performance? Did MTV miss seeing the rest of the cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello and Matt Bomer, without their shirts on? The whole hot male cast should have swept this category, hands down.

The Amazing Spider-Man

MTVMovieAwardsSpidey

It seems like the heat between real-life couple Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone did not translate onscreen for MTV. Back in the days of Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire in the title roles, the actors always warranted a Best Kiss nomination. Garfield and Stone didn't merit a nomination even though Stone was last year's Trailblazer recipient. Perhaps the reboot of this webbed superhero came too soon for fans to embrace?

Michael J. Fox's big television return

One of America's favorite sitcom stars, Michael J. Fox, is returning to television this fall on his old stomping ground, NBC. His show will be based loosely on his personal battle with Parkinson's Disease.

MichaelJFoxTV

One of television's favorite sitcom stars will be returning to America's living rooms next fall on a very familiar network, NBC. Michael J. Fox, who starred on the peacock network for seven seasons as Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties, is slated to appear in a new comedy that is loosely based on his own life.

Fox, chatting with Access Hollywood, talked about his return to Hollywood and his personal battle with Parkinson's Disease.

His new show will feature the former teen dream as an NBC anchorman whose personal and professional life are affected when he is diagnosed with Parkinson's.

When asked by the entertainment show why he was so willing to put his personal life out into the public, Fox had a pragmatic answer.

He said, "Well, I don't have a choice... But my personal life — you can sit and project out and say, 'Oh, I'm going to have this and it's going to be like this and I won't be able to do that.' But it's much more about right now. 'What can I do right now?' Right? I just thought, I love to do this and as much as anyone will let me do it and give me their time to do it — I should do it. And so, I'm doing it."

The former Spin City star is drawing a line, though, to protect his four kids, so they don't worry that their entire life is being written into the show.

Fox shared, "It's based loosely on my experiences. And I don't want to say too much because I don't want my kids to think every time a kid does something goofy on the show that it's a reflection on them."

Michael J. Fox warns Taylor Swift to stay away from his son>>

For fans that grew up with Fox, they might be pleased to hear he's still a magazine cover boy, except the demographic has really changed. Instead of a teen magazine, he is on the cover of AARP.

The actor laughed, "I went from Teen Beat and Tiger Beat... to AARP. There's some great tips about colon health!"

Michael J. Fox reveals alcoholism battle>>

While the subject matter has changed, Fox's sense of humor certainly has not.

More news regarding his sitcom will be announced at the network upfronts on May 13.
