Tara Reid either needs a lot of help or is a secret genius

$

On last week's episode of Marriage Boot Camp, fans were pretty sure that Tara Reid and Dean May's relationship was fake and that the truth would be revealed this week. It did not happen. What did happen: My confusion about whether Tara is in need of serious help or whether she's actually a super-calculating genius has reached new levels.

More: Forget the cheating — Michelle Money's Marriage Boot Camp attitude is even worse

I'm kidding, but only kind of. Tara's been a terrible participant on Marriage Boot Camp; she picks fights with the other couples, she refuses to participate and she's more often than not ranting about... nothing? On tonight's episode, she seemed drunk, at one point talking about not wanting to hurt her "children." There is a point at which this behavior stops being good TV and starts being disturbing, and I think we've passed it. If Tara is actually in control of herself and has lured us into her search for an Oscar, she might have jumped the shark(nado) in her attempt to entertain us. It's sad watching her lash out at people and cry every week, and I no longer care whether she and Dean are in a relationship anymore. It's ceased to be about Dean and become the Tara Show, which, if that was her intent, well done.

More: Sundy Carter's Marriage Boot Camp confession receives outpouring of support

But seriously, if Tara isn't acting — if this isn't all an elaborate ruse put together by Tara, her agent and her publicist (let's pretend Dean is an unknowing accomplice) — she needs help, and letting her put herself in a situation in which she loses control on television every week is beyond awful and cruel. Who is actually supporting Tara in her real life? After this week, when Dean yelled at Tara in front of everyone and earned himself a literal timeout (complete with jail cell and blanket), it's hard to imagine him being on her side. Maybe he's just at the end of his rope.

Twitter is sick of Tara's behavior, and people aren't afraid to tweet it every Friday night during the show. For the most part, they aren't exactly extending kindness and generosity to Tara. However, some on Twitter have stated that it's clear she needs real help with a one-on-one therapist, not the kind that's being offered on TV in front of other couples and a million viewers.

I know: It's TV. It's reality TV. People having meltdowns is part of the point. But this is so not funny anymore. Here's hoping that Tara has a breakthrough next week, or gets sent home to get some actual help, or reveals that this has all been part of her grand plan for world domination.

It doesn't matter if Farrah Abraham's stint on Matchmaker was all a front

Farrah Abraham is really good at getting on reality shows – she's done Celebrity Big Brother UK, Couples Therapy, Teen Mom, of course, and now, Million Dollar Matchmaker, the WE tv reincarnation of Patti Stanger's Millionaire Matchmaker, which used to live on Bravo. Since her relationship with Simon Saran ended, Farrah's kept any other relationships she might be in on the down-low, although the rumors about her still being with Saran never quite stopped. On Friday's episode of Million Dollar Matchmaker, she appealed to Patti Stanger for help finding a "Christian man" who would be a good father to her daughter, Sophia.

More: Farrah Abraham and Nicki Minaj go head-to-head in heated Twitter clash

Slut-shaming Farrah has basically become a national pastime, especially on social media, but on Friday, Patti proved that such behavior is not only toxic and awful, but useless. She was firm with Farrah about her need to come to terms with her past traumas, as well as her time spent in the porn industry, and told Farrah that her pursuit of fame and money was not going to help her find a good relationship. Farrah, of course, protested, but she wasn't, shall we say, her usual Farrah self. Patti told her she was ready for love, and reminded her that she did what she did, re the porn, because she wanted to provide for Sophia, but that work didn't define her and she didn't have to keep doing it.

More: Lisa Vanderpump just harshly put Farrah Abraham in her place

In the end, Farrah met a dude! Ryan! He seems reasonable, and as though he actually likes her! Is it all a front? Maybe! (Probably?) But it doesn't bother me if it is. I might be so numb to Farrah's shenanigans at this point that her stunts cease to disturb me, but it was really nice to see a softer, more receptive and reasonable Farrah, and to see someone take her to task for her actions, while not degrading her as a human being. Who knew you could do both of those things at the same time?

Patti's behavior towards Farrah wasn't perfect, by the way. I'm not crazy about her equating porn with shame – Farrah shouldn't have to be ashamed of doing porn, and porn doesn't equal a miserable life and weak morals, but that's going to take a while to drum into people. And while it's possible that Farrah's tired of all the hate she gets and is trying to turn over a new leaf, what difference does it make if it means we get to see a new Farrah, even if it only lasts for the duration of an episode?

Rihanna will take on one of the most iconic roles in film history

She didn't even have to be physically present at Comic-Con in San Diego to become the most talked-about celebrity at the expo. During the A&E show Bates Motel's panel, Rihanna announced via video that she is joining the cast of the popular TV show. But, because Rihanna never does anything unless she does it all the way, the singer revealed that she hasn't been cast for just any old role on the show — she's going to play Marion Crane, one of the most iconic characters ever in film.

How adorable, delightful and excited is RiRi in this clip?

rihanna bates motel

rihanna bates motel

The role of Crane was originally played by Janet Leigh in the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho. Yep, she's the one who checks into the Bates Motel, agrees to have dinner with Anthony Perkins' creepy Norman Bates and makes the grave mistake of suggesting he put his mother in a mental institution. Bates, of course, loves his mother more than anyone on Earth and proves his loyalty by stabbing Crane to death in the shower scene to end all shower scenes.

More: Rihanna and Drake are back together because he never stopped loving her

Don't expect Rihanna to re-enact that exact scene, however. When the character finally appears in the last season of the show, she'll have an entirely different background and "her story will play out in a different way," according to the show's creators. RiRi is already something of a Comic-Con darling whose song with Sia, "Sledgehammer," appeared over the closing credits of Star Trek Beyond — this announcement only increases her insane star power.

Seriously, is there anything she can't do? She and Jimmy Fallon have such hilarious chemistry together that they should get their own variety show, and Rihanna has appeared as an actress in projects like Battleship, Annie and the upcoming film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

More: Rihanna is definitely going through something tough but keeping it under wraps

At a time when celeb feuds and drama are at an all-time high — there's no doubt you've heard everything about Kim Kardashian exposing Taylor Swift and Khloé Kardashian and Chloë Grace Moretz sparring like boxers in a ring — it's really refreshing to know one that of the biggest celebs on the planet chooses to keep her focus on her work. Despite having her (prosthetic, probably) naked body featured in Kanye West's controversial music video for "Famous" (the same song at the center of the Kanye/Taylor/Kim feud) and being the featured singer in Calvin Harris' "This Is What You Came For" (the same song Swift's people say she wrote), Rihanna hasn't commented on a damn thing. Not a word. Nada.

Know why? She's too busy working her tail off, both as a singer and an actress, to hold onto her reign as the most intriguing celebrity on the planet. Bravo, RiRi! Even if you are eventually, in a shower or elsewhere, killed off in Bates Motel, you earned your spotlight the honest way.

Junk food confessions: America's best hot dogs

$

I love hot dogs. I don’t care if they’re full of snouts and anuses. Hell, they could be all anuses — I’d eat them voraciously like Trick Daddy on his birthday. Hot dogs were nose-to-tail dining before it was cool. We eat more hot dogs in New York than any other place in America does — they’re as much a staple of our diet as pizza and bagels are. When I was growing up in the old version of Brooklyn, there were only a few truly acceptable ways to eat a hot dog: mustard, mustard and sauerkraut or mustard and onions. No ketchup. Ketchup is an abomination that can stay with French fries, where it belongs.

More: 30 mind-blowing toppings for your hot dog

As I entered adulthood, the new version of Brooklyn emerged, and suddenly I was greeted by a multitude of new and exciting hot dog options. Immigrant communities aren’t as scared of trotting out their national versions, not fearing that they could possibly face a 20-minute lecture from a stranger on the virtues of Gulden’s Spicy Brown. Hot dog bars began to pop up featuring dozens of regional American variations. Marijuana possession laws have been relaxed, and people are starting to put Cheetos on everything.

While my favorite is still a Nathan’s Famous with brown mustard and sauerkraut, my eyes — and stomach — are now open to dozens of varieties. Here are my favorite American regional specialties, ones I’ve tried so far.

New York System wieners

ny system hot dog

ny system hot dog

These are not from New York; they are a specialty of Rhode Island. I don’t know what “system” they are referring to. Subway? Digestive? Regardless, they’re good topped with a chili-esque meat sauce, onions, mustard and a touch of celery salt and served in a side-split steamed bun. I’ve been told that the fact that it’s a side-split bun is important. I don’t understand what the big deal is — cut bread is cut bread — but if you say so, Rhode Island.

Baltimore dogs

Rosenfeld's Jewish Delicatessen/TripAdvisor

A fried hot dog, wrapped in fried bologna, slathered with mustard on a soft, squishy bun. I will take this over a bacon-wrapped hot dog any single day of the week. Bologna is just a gigantic hot dog all sliced up, so this is really a hot dog wrapped in a hot dog cloak. It’s the Buffalo Bill of frankfurters. The fried bologna component segues nicely into our next variation...

Chicago dogs

Image: Jeffreyw/Flickr

Famously “dragged through the garden,” Chicago dogs have way too much stuff on them: raw onion, pickled sport peppers, tomato slices, sweet relish, whole pickle spear, yellow mustard and celery salt. See? That’s just insanity. I also can’t eat them without making a huge mess, likely because they are served on a specialty roll that’s not available where I live. But I’ve found a solution!

As I mentioned above, bologna = gigantic hot dog sliced up. If you get it sliced super thick, you can grill it and make hot dog burgers (this is a major discovery for people such as me, who are in the “Burnt Is Better” camp). You can also engineer an excellent Chicago-style “hot dog burger” on a hefty poppy seed kaiser roll, with double patties and proportionate toppings. Also, you can now easily wrap a Chicago dog in foil and keep it in your purse for emergencies.

Sonoran/Mexican dogs

sonoran hot dog

sonoran hot dog

Again, way too much stuff on a hot dog. The dog is bacon-wrapped, grilled and topped with pinto beans, grilled onions, tomatoes, tomatillo salsa, mustard, mayonnaise, relish and heaps of shredded cheese (give or take this and that). Obviously it’s served in a gigantic, heavy roll, because no average bun can handle this, and even then you will get it all over you. Eat them naked. Problem solved.

Chinatown buns

milkbread

milkbread

You don’t grab these from a cart or restaurant — you’ll find them in every Chinese bakery from San Francisco to New York City, and they are a masterpiece of cheap eats. A hot dog bun is like a gigantic pig in a blanket, but the boring biscuit dough is replaced by Asian milk bread. I’m still confounded as to how milk bread is not a major thing in the States, as it’s so delicious that it’s impossible to eat less than an entire loaf in one sitting. It’s also one of the easiest breads you can make at home, so go do that the second you’ve finished reading this, then come back and tell me in the comments how I was right. I don’t care if it’s the middle of July — this is important! Put on a bikini, and get into the kitchen!

Kansas City Reuben dogs

Another thing lifted from New York, but I won’t complain. It’s our own fault that we were too dumb to think of this. It’s genius, and we need to accept the fact that we got gamed.

Bagel dogs

And on this one too. Goddamn it.

It’s a hot dog served in a baked potato. What did you think it was going to be? It’s even got sour cream and chives, for Chrissakes. Maybe this is how they serve all their food there. Then again, can you really blame them? I’m having a harder time thinking of things that I shouldn’t put in a baked potato.

Seattle dogs

Seattle hot dog
Image: bhofack2/Getty Images

Seattle tops its dogs with cream cheese, which is an acquired taste. I know, I thought it was impossible to create a situation where one would not welcome cream cheese, but then this happened. It took some time, but eventually I caught on to the brilliance of it. The cream cheese isn’t just for flavor; it acts as an adhesive. Smear it on both sides of the bun, and press on whatever you want, like crumbled potato chips or bacon bits. Then cradle your hot dog in there, and pour whatever toppings you’d like on top. Cream cheese is, by far, the most liberating addition to my hot dog repertoire. There are no barriers that can't be broken, no foods that can’t be added! Doritos! French fried onions! Skittles!

Have a cool hot dog in your neck of the woods that I haven’t heard of yet? Leave it in the comments. I haven’t met many hot dogs I haven’t loved, and I look forward to eating yours.

5 fabulous books that remind us vulvas are awesome

Content Warning: Body talk, links to NSFW images

Ah, the vulva. The beautiful female vulva. Something artists have drawn (hello O'Keefe) and poets have pondered for millenia. And now we have so many new ways to honor them.

It is extremely important to note that not everyone with a vulva identifies as a woman, and that not everyone who has a vulva wants to celebrate it. I love these books because they seek to undo some of the harm done by societal taboos on bodies in general, and vulvas specifically; that does not mean they are all for everyone, or that there are not complex layers of oppression at play in any body negativity. Body positive resources are not always inclusive of transgender people, though some of these books are. Please hold that in mind as you read, or stop here if needed.

I’ll Show You Mine

Wrenna Robertson spent 18 years as a stripper, and found herself increasingly frustrated with trends of body negativity and body alterations. She especially noticed the increasing popularity of labiaplasty, a cosmetic procedure that changes the appearance of the vulva—usually to make it more closely match a shell-like ideal typical of mainstream porn. She collaborated with photographer Katie Huisman to showcase a range of 60 vulvas of many shapes, sizes, colors, and ages. Their mission is to normalize and celebrate diverse bodies and diverse genitals, as well as to lift up the stories and sexualities of the people photographed. A percentage of all proceeds go to women’s charities.

From Wrenna Robertson:

“I recognized that there was a dearth of resource material which allowed women to view other women’s genitals. […] I decided to make a book which would display life-size and full color photos of a diverse range of vulvas, all shot from the same camera angles and in the same lighting conditions. I also recognized that this was an incredible opportunity for women to share their experiences surrounding their bodies and their sexualities. I believe our inability to share openly about this part of our body is a very large part of the problem. I saw this as an opportunity to encourage women to examine how they feel about their bodies, about their sexuality, to uncover the root of those feelings. I recognized that being able to glimpse into another woman’s experience can be such a powerful way to learn about ourselves and the way society has shaped our feelings and beliefs.”

Petals

Similar to I’ll Show You Mine, erotic photographer Nick Karras’s collection of 48 black and white photographs aims to celebrate the vulva and push back against trends of vulva-focused body negativity including labiaplasty. But where I’ll Show You Mine works to maintain full realism and defines itself as educational, Petals balances between art and realistic representation. It’s a beautiful collection—as long as you can get past the vulva-flower metaphor, and the consistent language equating having a vulva with female/feminine identity. It also led to a documentary, Petals: The Journey of Self-Discovery, about the creation and reception of the book, and a “sequel” book in full color called I Love My Petals.

From the creator’s website:

“Petals was created to encourage self-love to a world of women inundated by false messages from the media of unattainable ideals. Fewer and fewer magazines are acknowledging the inherent beauty of the feminine, utilizing Photoshop to create Barbie-like standards. Petals takes a stand for women everywhere, revealing that they are sacred, ravishing, and powerful just the way they are.”

Vulva 101

Photographer Hylton Coxwell came up with the idea for his collection of 101 full-color vulva photographs while on a nudist beach. He has spoken about our society’s harmful taboos as evidenced by the plethora of euphemisms for vulvas, in comparison with the total acceptability of saying “penis.” His mission, similar to the previous two books, is to break down taboo and bring forward a variety of images and narratives.

From Hylton Coxwell:

“Designed to help society overcome its fear and shame regarding vulva, Vulva 101 features closeup photos of one hundred and one women’s vulvas, ranging from 18 to 65 years old. Each page focuses on one woman’s vulva from three different angles. It also highlights the thoughts, feelings and experiences of the women involved, and the natural, unique beauty of the female form.”

The Cunt Coloring Book

What would this list be if it didn’t include some of my favorite coloring books? Adult coloring books are a popular trend at the moment, but vulva coloring books have been around since at least 1975. That’s when lesbian activist and artist Tee Corinne created The Cunt Coloring Book, which is now available once again from Last Gasp Press. The images are detailed and accurate, and the best part is that you get to color them in however you choose!

From Tee Corinne:

“In 1973 I set out to do drawings of women’s genitals for use in sex education groups. I wanted the drawings to be lovely and informative, to give pleasure and affirmation. I organized the drawings into a coloring book because a major way we learn to understand the world, as children, is by coloring. As adults many of us still need to learn about our external sexual anatomy.”

The Vaginatastic Coloring Book of Vulvas

Maria Fernanda’s more recent vulva coloring book is not only available for free online through the intersectional anti-oppressive publication bluestockings, but also includes images, awesome anatomy lessons, and myth-busting points of information! This might just be my favorite find in the world of vulva imagery—it’s celebratory, educational, radical, liberating, and accessible.

From Bluestockings:

“We seem to know so much about the penis and how it functions while completely neglecting the vagina and its companions. Furthermore, what we do know about it tends to be based on pornography and the constant image of one ‘ideal’ type of vulva. This coloring book aims to demystify this anatomy while also providing fun to its reader, or in this case, new vulvatastic artist! I put forward colorable images of many types of vulvas, with their differing labial and clitoral sizes, colors, piercings, amounts of pubic hair, and the like.”

Let’s normalize and celebrate sexual and body diversity—vulvas first.

Chrissy Teigen's 'clean eating' posts piss off everyone on Twitter

Supermodel, talk show host and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen never claimed to be a nutritionist — but when she talks about food, everyone seems to listen. Maybe it's because she doesn't deprive herself of tasty treats and still gets to look svelte. Perhaps folks just want to feel that if they have to suffer for a trim waist, damn it, so should Teigen.

But the new mama doesn't play that game. When Teigen took to Twitter to ask her followers what they think the theme of her next cookbook should be, some demanded to know why she won't just come out with the "diet" book of their dreams. Her response was healthy and refreshing, but because she's Chrissy Teigen, it was met with the kind of criticism we don't even reserve for political figures.

So, here's her reason for not wanting to write a diet cookbook:

teigen diet cookbook

teigen diet cookbook

So far, so good. But then Teigen explained a bit more about what she considers "clean eating":

teigen clean eating

More: How to eat like Chrissy Teigen

So, the next thing that happened was that Teigen got a bit of a schooling on what "clean eating" is and isn't — those who take the term seriously apply it when speaking about whole, real foods like vegetables, fruit, whole grains and plant and animal-based proteins, nuts and seeds. But they're also using "clean" to refer to foods that are not packaged and are minimally processed. Forklift Nutrition tweeted the following to Teigen: "'Clean' doesn't = healthy. Clean eating is a myth. No scientific support or objective definition."

That's when Teigen made it clear that she isn't applying a scientific definition:

With that out of the way, she continued to express her frustration with the Twitter police:

And then, because she's awesome, she went on to provoke the trolls by insisting that potato chips can totally fall into the "clean eating" category if she says they do.

Oh, and for good measure, she even covered her tracks by giving Velveeta some love — because, I guess there are a lot of intense Velveeta fans just waiting to slam anyone who dares speak ill of their beloved not-quite-cheese:

teigen velveeta

The only thing Teigen can be accused of is wanting to make her followers happy by taking their needs into consideration before releasing another cookbook. She loves food and makes no bones about it, which is refreshing, especially for a swimsuit model who makes a living from being in shape. Give Teigen a break and either join in on her fun, potato chip-filled ride or stop following her on social media.

Don't shush your kids when they ask about my dwarfism

$

It happened again. I was at the movies with my son. A little girl looked at me then asked her mom, Is she an adult?

We were all about to see the same movie, Finding Dory. It was the perfect setting, I believed, for a great teaching moment. She could have explained we are all born in different shapes, colors and sizes, and the lady you're asking about has dwarfism. She could have said, Yes, Honey, we are not all born the same and that's OK. But, the little girl's mom did nothing. Worse yet, she said nothing. Literally, she pretended as though she never heard it.

The little girl asked again. Louder this time. She needed an answer. I wanted to answer the poor girl: "Yes, honey, I am an adult, my bones are just short and sometimes I wish I were a little kid."

More: These parents are calling out the "sham" of perfect parenthood with photos of their kids

With children it really is just that simple. They don't want ridiculous details. They want their answers like they want their Kool-Aid. Straight up.

This sort of thing happens more often than you might think. I have diastrophic dysplasia, one of the rarest forms of dwarfism. In short (no pun intended), my long bones simply just don't grow. No matter if I'm in a public bathroom washing my hands, standing in line at the movie theater, or even grocery shopping, a child will more than likely ask about my stature. And per the norm, their parent will become too embarrassed to respond, and they'll ignore it entirely. What parents don't know is that not responding is the worst response. Ever.

I heard it. You heard it. We all heard it! Mom and Dad, stop making things awkward. Here's how you talk about it.

First, remember the questions your child asks about someone's disability have little (if nothing at all) to do with the actual person. They are no different than asking why the sky is blue or why a dog has fur. Take their questions at face value. And let them know it's OK they asked. If your kid asks why someone uses a wheelchair, keep the answer simple, "Good question! Some people have trouble walking and the wheelchair helps them move around." The same can be said for someone who is deaf and uses their hands to speak or blind and needs to use a walking stick — praise plus the answer in its most simple form will do fine.

More: Please stop worrying about what my vegan kids are eating

One day, while at my son's gymnastics lesson, a little boy near me asked his mother sweetly, "Can she do gymnastics with her cane?" This little boy didn't care that I used a cane. He wasn't interested in why I used a cane (though I've been asked that before, too). He simply wanted to know if there was anything I could do in the gym. But, his mom froze in place. I had to chime in.

I asked the little boy, "What do you think I could do while using my cane?" And his response shocked me.

"I think you could do the rings, because you can just hang on to those like you do your cane." How adorable. How brilliant. And in his own way, how incredibly inclusive. In my mind, he deserved a damn medal for it. His mom smiled. Since then, he always says hello to me and makes an effort to say hi to my son as well.

Sure, I could have snubbed his curiosity. I could have easily been annoyed, offended or insulted, or just ignored him altogether. But, he deserved an answer. Children deserve answers. They're trying to make sense of the world we live in. They simply want to know how something works. Or doesn't work. Either way, I feel like it's a responsibility to help parents find a response that, well, works. And that means chiming in when they can't seem to find the words. In many ways those with a disability are setting a precedent with the way they respond. If we're mean, nasty or condescending, a child may assume all those with a disability are mean, nasty or condescending. Really, it does take a village.

The second worst thing a parent can do when their child asks about the obvious is apologize.

"Oh God! I'm so sorry! We're still learning manners!" One father cried out when his daughter asked why I was so small. His reaction perplexed me while her question was understandable. As a parent, questions should never embarrass you. They should be embraced, because they come from a very genuine place. I'm not sorry I'm handicapped (though it does certainly suck sometimes). So, don't be sorry your child is noticing differences in the world. It's natural.

It's also a cue that now is the perfect time to talk about the beauty of being different. It's time to make a comfy spot at home, sit down and explain how absolutely boring life would be if we all looked the same. Use your child's dolls as examples. Son, imagine if all your dinosaurs looked alike. Honey, imagine if every Barbie had only blonde hair and Skipper never existed. Imagine if there was only one toy in the whole world. That wouldn't be fun, would it?

More: Finally there's some good news for kids who suck their thumbs

If there's one thing I've learned about kids, it's the art of the deal. Like, when your kid falls, they look at you first and wait for your reaction before they react. The less of a production you make it, the less of a production they'll make it. The same goes for those off-the-cuff, wildly unforeseen questions kids ask. When a child wonders about my height, I would love for that child not to be reprimanded and then swooped away as if I were contagious. I would love to hear their parent open up and begin a conversation with me. I would love the opportunity to introduce myself after they have said, Yes, sweetheart, she is small. But, so are you and so is Mommy compared to, say Daddy or Uncle Tom. People come in all shapes and sizes.

I'll let you know if that day ever comes...

What women need to know about Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton's new running mate

$
0
0

With a few days left to go before the Democratic National Convention, Hillary Clinton has selected Virginia senator Timothy Kaine as her running mate and the possible next vice president of the United States. Her choice wasn't completely shocking; many say Kaine is a safe bet and a politician who was at the top of her list from the start of her campaign.

The first thing he has going for him is that he hails from a swing state and has served as both governor of Virginia and mayor of Richmond. Second, Kaine is a media-savvy, Spanish-speaking candidate who was the chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011 and one of the first to endorse President Obama during his run.

Third, Kaine isn't going to shake things up the way that, say, Senator Elizabeth Warren would have (which is a good thing). But his track record on women's issues is strong enough to appeal to many Democrats — that is, if you can overlook one or two facts that make some a little nervous.

Let's back up.

The first thing that needs to be said about Kaine is that Planned Parenthood gave him a rating of 100 percent on its 2016 Congressional Scorecard. The scores are given based on elected officials' votes on legislation related to women's health care and rights. Here are some of the important stands Kaine has taken in support of women:

  • He voted against eliminating funding for Planned Parenthood.
  • He voted in support of a bill that banned employers from refusing to provide any health coverage, including contraceptive coverage, to women.
  • He voted for the Women's Quality Access to Health Care amendment.
  • He voted against an amendment that would allow health professionals to deny women health care, including abortions, because of the health professionals' religious or moral convictions.
  • He voted against an amendment (proposed by Ted Cruz, FYI) that would have withdrawn U.S. participation from the United Nations, which would have undercut U.S. influence in promoting women's rights around the world.
  • He voted in favor of restoring funding for Planned Parenthood.
  • He voted against the "Pain-Capable Unborn Child Act," which required survivors of sexual assault to undergo compulsory medical treatment or counseling 48 hours prior to an abortion.

More: Hillary Clinton running for president is the best thing for my sons

But Clinton's choice isn't pitch-perfect.

Here's the thing about Kaine that might make some women worry: He describes himself as a devout Catholic who is personally opposed to abortion. In 2005, while running for governor, Kaine pledged to reduce the number of abortions in Virginia by promoting adoption and abstinence-focused education. Kaine supported the Hyde Amendment, which prevents Medicaid recipients from using federal funds to fund abortions, and he supports parental consent for mothers seeking abortions. At the same time, he told CNN that he supports Roe v. Wade and refuses to refer to himself as "pro-life" because "I've never embraced labels," he said.

That might seem wishy-washy to some, but Kaine insists that he is one of the few politicians out there (my words, not his) who can actually separate his personal beliefs and religious convictions from those that best serve his constituents.

"I have a traditional Catholic personal position, but I am very strongly supportive that women should make these decisions and governments shouldn't intrude," Kaine told CNN. "I'm a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade and women being able to make these decisions. In government, we have enough things to worry about. We don't need to make people's reproductive decisions for them."

More: Donald Trump's VP Mike Pence scares the bejeesus out of women, and he should

Some politicians, including Senator Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and even Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine, have either implied or come out and said plainly that Kaine is the real deal: a person who has well-thought-out positions on issues and is able to take public policy positions that conflict with his own personal beliefs. And this is only the beginning. Over the next few days, the country will learn a great deal about Kaine and why he is Clinton's No. 1 choice for running mate. As far as women's issues are concerned, he's got at least one thing going for him: He's no Mike Pence.

Motherhood should not be a detriment to women entrepreneurs

Discrimination is a nebulous creature. It comes in a variety of ways. It peeks out at us when we see the Lean In message splashed across corporate walls and flies out in the moments when we see pregnant women receive sideways glances or get passed over for promotions.

For all of the growing focus on diversity, here's something we should all know about women entrepreneurs.

1. Women are the rising tribe of entrepreneurs

Economists agree, "Economic empowerment of women across the rich world is one of the most remarkable revolutions of the past 50 years." Women contribute $3 trillion to the economy. Women own 36 percent of all businesses. American Express’s State of Women-owned Businesses Report shows that the number of women-owned businesses grew by 54 percent in the United States in the past 15 years.

In short, the golden age for women entrepreneurship has begun.

2. Poor family policies are a big factor

One of the big reasons for this growing phenomenon is that women do not find the flexibility they need to come back to work while raising a young family. Nearly 43 percent of women quit the workforce after having made the decision to start a family — no matter how smart or productive they are. A growing number of women are returning to work as mompreneurs.

3. Women are far less likely to raise capital

According to the American Express report, women only pull in 5 percent of all equity capital in the U.S. despite the fact that women own 30 percent of businesses. Ninety percent of all startups that raised Series A funding do not have a female founder. Women start with almost six times less capital than men do. The estimate is that women receive $33 million less capital than men for their ventures.

4. Women are more likely to persevere

Companies with at least one woman on the board are likely to outperform others by almost 66 percent. Women-led businesses tend to perform three times better than the S&P 500. Women also tend to be more innovative in their approach.

5. There are several companies dedicated to helping women succeed

Even though there are several systemic social and financial challenges that women have to face while starting their own businesses, many companies have dedicated themselves to the cause of helping women succeed. Here is a list of 25 companies that are seeing women through several stages of growing a business.

The surprising list of things that can keep your teen from getting pregnant

$

Rates of teenage pregnancy in the U.S. may be at their lowest for 40 years, but are still among the highest in the world's most developed nations. While being pregnant isn't the worst thing that could happen to a teenager, most parents agree that having a baby is best done later in life. Life experience, financial stability and secure relationships all make that parenting journey much easier.

More: My extreme adventure trip with my tween is nothing compared to what's ahead

So how do we stop the one in six 15-year-old females who currently give birth by their 20th birthdays? Shaming and stigmatizing teenage parenthood in the name of "prevention" might stop some teenagers from having sex, but is this the right approach? Bearing in mind changing attitudes towards sex, what really prevents teen pregnancy?

1. Let them hang out with teen parents

A recent study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, suggests that girls whose friends have become teen parents are less likely to get pregnant themselves. Of the 595 teenage girls from across the U.S. who were interviewed several times over a number of years, those whose friends became teen mothers were less likely to have sex, get pregnant or get married as teens, and more likely to get a college degree. Rather than want to follow in their friends’ footsteps, it seems that teenage girls are learning from their friends’ mistakes — when it comes to teen pregnancy, at least.

The researchers believe that exposure to the realities of pregnancy and parenthood — stigma, ostracization from society, and an adverse impact on education and social life — is more effective in preventing teen pregnancy than reading about it in books or hearing it from an adult.

2. Let them watch Teen Mom

Watching the lives of teenage mothers on the TV screen could help prevent your own teen from becoming pregnant, according to a 2014 study carried out by the National Bureau of Economic Research that claimed the MTV show 16 and Pregnant and its spinoff Teen Mom reduced teen births by nearly 6 percent in 2010. The study also asserted that the rate of teenage pregnancy declined faster in areas where teenagers were watching more MTV shows.

Whenever the shows air, MTV promotes a website called StayTeen.org that "encourage[s] you to enjoy your teen years and avoid the responsibilities that come with too-early pregnancy and parenting" and provides information about birth control and STDs. Of course, watching the teenage moms-to-be cope with the challenges of pregnancy, child birth and parenting could be the reason teen viewers decide to postpone parenthood until later life.

3. Limit — but talk about — sexual content on TV

On the other hand, watching sexual content on television may be connected with higher rates of teen pregnancy. A 2008 RAND Corporation study suggests that adolescents who watch a lot of TV shows with sexual content are twice as likely to become pregnant, or impregnate someone, as their peers who watched fewer shows of this kind. The lead author of the study recommended that parents use sex scenes on TV as a "teachable moment" — so rather than stop your teen watching this type of program altogether (an impossible task), take the opportunity to sit down and watch it with them, and discuss what they've seen and how their teen could learn from it.

4. Enroll them in sports

One of the simplest ways to reduce risky sexual behavior and pregnancy rates in teenage girls may be to encourage them to participate in sports, says the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF). In 1995, the WSF conducted a "Youth Risk Behavior Survey" in U.S. high schools, asking questions about sports and risky sexual behavior. It found a correlation between young females athlete and lower teen pregnancy rates, a later age of first having sexual intercourse, a greater likelihood of using contraception and fewer sexual partners over the course of a year. Of course, this isn't the same as causing lower teen pregnancy rates, but with all the other benefits of physical activity (such as improved self esteem, reduced stress and anxiety and a healthier body image), encouraging your teen to participate in sports can only be a positive thing.

5. Talk about sex

Talking to your teen about sex isn’t always easy, for the parent or the child. But overcoming communication barriers can be instrumental in preventing teenage pregnancy. According to The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, teens say their parents influence their decisions about sex, love and relationships more than their peers or the media. Sex is a topic that should be spoken about openly, without judgment or reproach, long before a child becomes a teenager. And it shouldn’t be thought of as just one "talk," but rather an ongoing conversation over many years.

6. Make sure they know masturbating is OK

Preventing teenagers from engaging in all sexual behavior could actually lead to a greater chance of teen pregnancy, according to 2009 data from the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NSSHB.) The research found that boys (but not girls) who masturbate regularly are more likely to practice safe sex. The distinction between male and female adolescents may be down to the possibility that girls are more reluctant to talk about masturbation. The message for parents is clear: masturbation is a natural part of adolescence and shouldn't be treated as unhealthy or taboo.

7. Give them condoms

For the teenagers who don't decide to abstain from sex, educating them about the different contraceptive methods is imperative. Teenage boys and girls need to know what options are available to them, such as condoms, birth control pills, the patch, the vaginal ring, the IUD and injectable birth control. In one study, when mothers discussed condom use before teens initiated sexual intercourse, young people were three times more likely to use condoms than teens whose mothers never discussed condoms, or discussed condoms only after teens became sexually active. Additionally, young people who used condoms the first time they had sex were 20 times more likely to continue to use condoms than other teens.

As a parent, the responsibility for preventing your teen's pregnancy is firmly at your feet. Get the conversation started early, remove the stigma attached to sex and sexuality and provide all the practical information in easy-to-digest language.

10 super easy ways to work exercise into your busy life

$

In order to stay healthy and happy, we all know we should follow a lifestyle that includes a well-balanced diet and exercise. We already know how beneficial physical activity is for our health, but the problem occurs when people believe their busy schedule doesn’t allow them to work out. Luckily, it’s possible to get exercise into your life. All you have to do is get smart about how you find time.

More: 8 things you can do to make your dreams a reality

1. Turn your commute into a workout

On days when you’re super busy, you can still sneak exercise into your commute. For example, you can ride your bike to work or jog (unless you work in a different town or on the other side of your town). If driving to work, you can park farther away than you usually do, and walk to work. Use the steps instead of the elevator.

2. Change your diet

Diet and physical activity go hand in hand, and it’s impossible to have one without the other. Exercising regularly and being more active also call for some adjustments to your dietary pattern. There’s no one-size-fits-all rule, but the best diet plan always includes the exclusion of foods with low or no nutritional value and an increased intake of healthy, nutrient-dense items.

It’s always better to cook your lunches and dinners for yourself instead of ordering take out or eating out because you’re more likely to eat healthier. However, when you’re busy, the last thing you want is to spend too much time in the kitchen. You should try meal prepping and freezing meals, or you can find some super delicious yet healthy and easy-to-make recipes online.

3. Set your alarm early

Can’t fit your exercise later in the day? Then why don’t you try exercising before you go to work? Exercising early in the morning means you get to cross your workout off your to-do list. Plus, workouts boost your energy levels, thus making you more productive throughout the day. Does this mean you should sleep less? No, of course not! Sleep is very important for your overall health and well-being, and you should establish a regular sleep pattern. Try going to bed an hour earlier than usual so you can wake up earlier as well.

4. Sneak in a workout during your lunch break

If you don’t want to wake up an hour earlier to work out because you barely get some reasonable amount of sleep as it is, that’s not a problem. You can use your 60-minute lunch break to hit the nearby gym, go for a walk or pretty much do anything else that doesn’t include sitting. Is there a park nearby? You can jog, or simply take a walk with your friends. There are many things you can do during that hour and still manage to eat and catch up your friends. So on your lunch break tomorrow, get up and move!

5. Walk

If your activity level is low, you can start the easiest way possible: walking. Start with the brisk walk for 10 minutes, and gradually increase the time as you get used to it. You can also get a pedometer to count your steps, or download a walking app onto your smartphone. Ideally, you should aim for 10,000 steps or more a day.

6. Care for your joints

Healthy joints are necessary for flexibility and mobility. Unfortunately, most of us don’t pay attention to joint or cartilage until it’s too late. To avoid decreased mobility and troubles walking, you should get a supplement that delivers a variety of nutrients your joints need. There are numerous supplements nowadays, and you just have to choose the one that is right for you. When buying these products, always make sure they’re manufactured by a reliable company, read the list of ingredients and look for experiences of other users.

7. Exercise at work

Did you know you can get your daily dose of exercise at work? It’s possible! There are many exercises you can do in your office, cubicle and behind your desk, and you can also use the perks of stairs in the office building as well.

8. Exercise while watching TV

Just because you’re catching up with the latest developments in Game of Thrones doesn’t mean you should turn into a couch potato when you’re home from work. You can do squats, lunges and many other exercises while watching your favorite show at the same time.

9. Write a list

Write a list that includes everything you’d like to do in your free time. Once you’re done, number each activity regarding how important it is to you (i.e. prioritize them). In the end, you’ll have a detailed insight into activities that you value the most. Make sure exercising is always in top three activities.

If you’ve ever wanted to exercise but thought you were too busy, this article showed you smart ways you can sneak in more activity into your lifestyle. Getting more exercise is all about being wise and making smart choices, such as exercising at work, using stairs, walking, etc. Your activity at work will also inspire other co-workers who’ll want to do the same.

5 ways to successfully make a massive career pivot

$

Merriam-Webster describes a pivot as “the action of turning around a point.” Myriad business pivots make up some of the most popular technologies and services we’ve come to know today.

More: I am being micromanaged like a child while doing two jobs at once

PayPal began as Confinity, a cryptography company designed for exchanging money over Palm Pilots. Flickr started as Game Neverending, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that ran from 2002 to 2004. And Groupon was initially The Point, a website intended to bring groups of people together to solve social problems.

Personal pivots, however, are often times murkier to maneuver and happen organically. It’s not necessarily as easy to distinguish in one’s career, and you don’t know where you will end up. It’s the decisive point where one shifts his or her planned journey to another, often unexpected, one.

That’s what happened to me before becoming executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Altify (formerly The TAS Group). My story is one of a pronounced career pivot and offers some valuable lessons for those nearing similar circumstances.

Lesson 1: Welcome constructive feedback

As a fashion design student, I was driven to incorporate brand with design. I began my career with a keen sense of design and vision but with a portfolio not exactly up to par for an aspiring designer. After interning with Nicole Miller, I was hired on the condition they never had to see the drawings in my portfolio again. I had the right vision but could not execute them with my drawing abilities.

This is where being open to constructive feedback is critical. Portfolio aside, I was hired as the second design intern in a small, close-knit design team. I thrived in the fast-paced environment but believed my strengths would shine brighter, and be better leveraged, in the corporate world.

After doing some research, I decided to target a job at Levi Strauss & Co. My education and experience fit the fashion industry, and the culture was very corporate. Most importantly, Levi’s was a pioneer in driving a strong values-based culture that honored diversity. I was moved both by the business opportunity and by the company’s aspirations statement. This combination of values and business would become a theme throughout my career.

But first I had to break into Levi’s, which was not easy, as they were on a company-wide hiring freeze when I graduated from college in 1993. I tell this story in this article that appeared in The Economist.

“Every day on my lunch break from a mundane job in retail, I’d go to the local Levi’s office and ask the receptionist if there were any open jobs,” I wrote. “Every day, she’d recommend I check the bulletin boards in the restrooms. So every weekday for a month, I’d march into the ladies’ room.”

One day, it occurred to me that the hiring managers were likely to be men, so instead of going into the women’s restroom, I snuck into the men’s. Right in the center of the board was the job I had been seeking. I walked into the hiring manager’s office and was made an offer on the spot.

Lesson 2: Know your strengths well enough to know how to reapply them

We are all in the business of solving problems for consumers rather than selling to them, just as we are all in a consumer-centric global culture where brands are the universal language, explains William D'Arienzo in his book Brand Management Strategies. The same is true in Silicon Valley, where everything is tech. You’re either in the industry, or you’re out of it.

Having secured my job at Levi Strauss & Co. in Chicago and been promoted to a role at their headquarters in San Francisco, I saw another tech boom arising in the world’s tech hub. I decided to make the move from Levi’s to one of Silicon Valley’s technology darlings, database leader Oracle. Because ultimately, it doesn’t matter what industry you’re in if you understand why a product appeals to its audience; you just need to adjust your message to the audience.

Success here is found in reapplying the marketing principles of one industry into another. For me, that proved effective in transitioning from merchandise manager at Levi’s to business development manager and ultimately marketing director at Oracle. An integral part of this discipline is in knowing and willingly accepting your strengths and managing your weaknesses.

Lesson 3: Learn from great mentors

Seventy-five percent of private sector executives surveyed by the American Society for Training and Development said that mentoring had been critical in helping them reach their current position. In fact, corporate mentoring is frequently recognized as an essential strategy for attracting, developing and retaining top employees. A healthy, valuable exchange of ideas and inspiration is made possible when an experienced person helps another individual develop professionally.

My first mentors — Pamela Truswell, Mark Newton and Jeb Dasteel — helped shape my career in the early days at Oracle. They helped me develop the confidence I felt in my abilities. During those same years, Oracle, a male-dominated company in a male-dominated industry, appointed their first female chief marketing officer, Judy Sim. Sim was a great marketer and leader, and more importantly, she was the first woman I’d heard of who become a CMO.

Lesson 4: Embrace big opportunities

Often times, the biggest opportunities in a career pivot arise years after your first shift. Having worked for reputable brands including IBM and Microsoft after Oracle, growing my level of responsibility and productivity along the way, the biggest opportunity of my career came more recently.

More: My boss is using the office as her personal day care

Today, I’m driven by the challenge of taking the Altify brand and its sales transformation platform and making it more broadly known and adopted. This is a brand with established revenue and a portfolio of clients that reads like a who’s who of top performers. Still, I came into the organization to elevate it in the market to garner the visibility it’s worthy of.

Lesson 5: Don’t be afraid of failure

Comedian George Burns once said, "I honestly think it is better to be a failure at something you love than to be a success at something you hate." To discover the difference, once must have the openness to take on new things.

Fortunately for women in business, the road has been partially travailed by the progress of prior women. The opportunity exists today because a group of incredible women very deliberately made their way forward and took themselves seriously enough to influence others to do the same. It’s a message I always enforce with the young women I mentor because I think it’s one of the most important.

Final thoughts

Oscar Wilde wrote, “To expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect.” The key is in embracing it. Know your skills, trust your choice and yourself, and your path may divert as mine has. In the end, only you are responsible for carving out your unique path.

18 ingenious ice cream sandwich hacks that will keep you chill all summer

Summer is the prime time to have ice cream sandwiches. I love the classic: chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream and maybe a few chocolate chips around the edges. If you love the classic too, then that’s totally fine, but there are so many other variations you could try. Think waffles, pancakes, muffins and so much more.

However you spin it, here are our favorite ice cream sandwich hacks.

More: We turned s'mores into ice cream sandwiches, and we want s'more!

1. Swap cookies for brownies

Instead of using chocolate chip cookies, try brownies. Slather ice cream between two brownies, and you've got there a dessert from heaven.

2. Just waffle

If you love brunch, then you're going to love this ice cream sandwich. Grab your favorite ice cream and two waffles, and make the most delicious ice cream sandwich ever.

3. Doughnuts!

Doughnut ice cream sandwich. I will say it again — doughnut ice cream sandwich. Cut a glazed doughnut in half, add two scoops of ice cream, and enjoy!

More: Hello, doughnut ice cream sandwiches — welcome to our summer party

4. Hand pies

Once you've tried the brownies, waffles and doughnuts, it's time for something more adventurous. Try making an ice cream sandwich with hand pies. What! This can work with strawberry, blueberry or rhubarb pie; add some ice cream in the middle of the two hand pies, and you are all set. Oh, grab as many napkins as you can.

5. Invite the Girl Scout Cookies

When Girl Scout Cookie season comes around, make an ice cream sandwich with your favorite. It will be the best ice cream creation of all time.

6. Hot and cold

How hot are the cookies in your ice cream sandwich? Not warm at all? Why is that? Don't you know? To make the perfect ice cream sandwich, you’ll need warm cookies and super-cold ice cream. The warm cookies will slowly melt the ice cream, so you’ll have the perfect dessert.

7. The ice cream disk trick

Here is how you get a perfect round for your ice cream sandwich. Put your ice cream into plastic cups, freeze, and slice with a serrated knife. This will give you perfect little rounds for your ice cream. Or! Spread the ice cream on a cookie sheet, and cut out rounds with cookie cutters.

8. The healthy thing — womp womp

If you want to feel you're eating a little healthier, then instead of using cookies for your ice cream sandwich, use slices of apple or apple chips. But come on, who are you fooling with that apple ice cream sandwich, really?

9. Cinnamon rolls — now that's more like it

The next time you're going to make cinnamon rolls, cut them in half right after you take them out of the oven, and use them for your ice cream sandwich.

10. Pancakes and maple syrup

Love a decadent breakfast? Then go a step further, and use pancakes as the sandwich base. Mix your vanilla ice cream with a little maple syrup, and make the perfect breakfast-dessert hybrid. Throw in some bacon if you're nasty!

11. The bigger disk

If you’re making a huge batch of ice cream sandwiches, then you can cut perfect rounds by cutting horizontal slices right into the ice cream pint. Once all the rounds are cut, then you can push out the ice cream and make your yummy sandwiches.

More: Make an ice cream sandwich postcard

12. Froyo it

Ice cream sandwiches don’t always have to be made with ice cream. Use your favorite frozen yogurt — it tastes just as delicious, and it’ll be healthier. It’s a good day when you can have a “healthy” ice cream sandwich.

13. Strawberry short-cream

I’ve always been a huge fan of strawberry shortcake, and what better way to enjoy it during the summer than making a strawberry shortcake ice cream sandwich. Start with a sugared biscuit or angel food cake, and add fresh strawberries and strawberry ice cream for strawberry-filled goodness.

14. Chipotle ice cream sandwich

Healthy ice cream sandwiches do exist. You can make cookies with black beans and serve them with avocado ice cream. Healthy and delicious all in one bite does exist.

15. Churros

If you're looking for a fun project, then make churros from scratch (in the shape of a square or circle), and fill them with sweet caramel ice cream. It will be the best batch of ice cream sandwiches you’ve ever had.

16. The great chocolate dunk

Dip your ice cream sandwiches in chocolate — lots and lots of chocolate. Just make your ice cream sandwich as you normally would, and dip half of it in melted chocolate (you can even drizzle the chocolate if you want).

17. Ice cream sandwich pops

Ice cream sandwich pops are super easy for kids to manage. Instead of giving your kids a full ice cream sandwich, cut a full sandwich into quarters or halves, and add a lollipop stick to the bottom of each piece.

18. Blueberry muffin stuffin'

If you're out of cookies, you can use anything you have on hand. Have blueberry muffins on your countertop? Go on, make ice cream sandwiches with that. Cut off the muffin top (have that as a snack), then cut the middle of the muffin in half, and use that as the base. It’s unusually delicious!

ARIES (March 19 - April 18)

Mars's prolonged stay in Scorpio has really put you through the wringer this year. You've been thrown more obstacles, challenges and emotional curveballs than anyone should have to manage, yet it's also been an enlightening journey. At first you thought you had to rise to the occasion, but as things got more extreme you began to see that acceptance — rather than resistance — was the way to go. This isn't something that goes over well in the Aries playbook. However, it does lead to true empowerment. A tree that bends in the wind is less likely to break than one that's rooted to the spot.

It feels counterintuitive to walk away from a confrontation on July 29, but that's exactly what you must do. Yes, it's true that you needed to expose the problems and faults in a work situation, but if you don't give a client or superior an opportunity to rectify matters, then you really are forcing his hand. You will remind this person of hidden resources that lie buried beneath and, in the process, you might even remind yourself of your own treasured qualities as well.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 17)

This is a difficult time when what you are called upon to do professionally flies against your personal feelings of friendship and loyalty. Nevertheless, it will be clear on July 31 that you will have to do what's best for the company, and this won't go over well with certain people who were relying on you to promote their interests. You can try explaining yourself, but it will probably fall on deaf ears. Give people time and space to process things in their own way. They may never like what you did, but they will come around to understanding your reasons for doing it.

Uranus in retrograde on July 29 brings a downshift in gears. It's aggravating considering the time spent getting your information in order for a review, application or interview. Does this mean that the whole thing's off? Let's say it's not the burning priority for the other side like it once was. This is good news if you were on the wrong end of an inquiry, investigation or lawsuit, because the whole thing may blow over. And what if this was something on which you pinned your hopes? Start looking for another door to knock on because the one you're standing in front of won't be opening any time soon.

ARIES (March 19 - April 18)

This is a strange time to be falling in love. You have so many pressing concerns in other areas of your life that romance, frankly speaking, doesn't exactly top the list. Being a true child of Mars, your impulse will be to beg off. You don't need any distractions as you battle the demons and dragons that have overrun your life. But where does it say you have to go it alone? Is it such a bad idea to come home to someone whose main purpose is to provide you with a pleasant diversion? A little light in your corner won't make you soft.

As Venus moves ahead of the sun (you can see her in the nighttime sky right after sunset), you will feel once more like you're being recognized, loved and appreciated. It's a good thing too because you tend to get snarky when you sense that you're being ignored or neglected. Negative attention is better than no attention at all. However, you will be called out for comments made in the past and for actions that really weren't all that well thought out. Is it enough to derail a hope, project or aspiration? It all depends on how gracious you are about saying "I'm sorry."

Is he playing with your head again? That's what you'll be asking yourself this week when an off-and-on love interest or former spouse makes a surprise reappearance. The conversation will seem casual but you can tell that something's up. You learned a long time ago how to read between the lines and fill in those pregnant pauses. Nevertheless Saturn's anchoring presence shows that he truly is sincere. The question is, do you really want him back? It will be nice to know that the ball is in your court and that this time you get to choose whether to pass or return serve.

You will never grow jaded. And it doesn't matter how many times you've been led up the garden path and right into a brick wall. There's something about your heart that can't be broken. Hearts aren't like willpower. They're more resilient because they grow back. They grow as much from hurt and sorrow as they do from joy and hope. This week you'll meet someone who will change the way you look at men. He won't sweep you off your feet or rock your world, but he will surprise and delight you in ways that you didn't believe you'd ever experience again.

Mars, the planet that's been making your family life a living hell, is close to leaving that part of your solar chart that pertains to hearth and home. And it's usually when a planet is poised at the threshold that you're most at risk of being blind-sided. On July 29, Mercury squares Mars. This is bound to bring some kind of news, challenge or ultimatum that will make you see red. You need to remember that an opponent only wins if he succeeds in bringing you down to his level. Continue to travel the high road and you will be home free on Aug 2.

Virgo isn't the first zodiac sign that comes to mind when people think of mistresses. And Virgos like it this way. Let everyone believe you're a prude who turns up her nose at anything untoward. It makes it easier to cover your tracks. Now Virgos don't really go out looking for these sorts of relationships. You want a man to call your own. But you also know you have an unfortunate tendency to let a partner take over your life once you're romantically involved which is why you opt for "otherwise engaged" paramours. This ensures you can have your cake and eat it too.

It's been a long time since you felt "special" and you have ruling planet Venus in Leo to thank for it. Venus is at her most golden when she's in this sign, and you've probably noticed by now that guys are falling over themselves to please and appease you. It also looks like your partner has noticed as well and you can expect some tense exchanges. This could spell trouble if you're not careful. Venus can make you feel special but you're the one who has to believe that you truly are special. And that's the gift that Venus in Leo has to bestow.

It's hard to admit but love doesn't work for you in the way that it used to. You're accustomed to falling in love with unobtainable men who were just too perfect, married or gay. Obsession used to fuel your passion but not anymore. Maybe you've been disappointed too many times or maybe you're just getting wise. Mars going back and forth in Scorpio for as long as it has can have that effect. Don't mistake disillusionment for jadedness. You're growing and evolving in mysterious ways and the result will be a richer and deeper love life — preferably with someone who wants to be obtainable.

And as he narrates his plans to pack up his things, leave his relationship and move in with you, you'll find yourself strangely disconnected. Are you in shock about things working out or are you terrified at the prospect of actually getting together? Clearly this is the time to take things slow. Don't respond to ultimatums on July 29 when tensions in your relationship spike thanks to the Mercury/Mars square. This is all talk and posturing, but you don't want to escalate matters because you hurt his pride. If anything you want to talk him down off that emotional ledge. What you'll come to discover is that his freakout is more existential (i.e., "what am I doing with my life?") than it is personally directed at you. It's easy to act out with loved ones which is why it's important for loved ones to redirect frustrated energy toward addressing real issues and not the decoy ones.

Now most people would be hurt and offended by what comes out of his mouth, but you've been listening to love partners tell you what to do with your life since you first started dating. If anything you've developed a sense of humor about it. And besides: He's cute. Whether he's a keeper or not remains to be seen but continue to let him believe that you're open to his input. In time he'll relax and he may even grow to recognize that there's nothing to improve upon. You're as good as it gets!

Siggy Flicker is the change RHONJ needed

Yes, Real Housewives of New Jersey is still the Teresa Giudice show, but thankfully Sunday's episode changed it up a bit with the addition of relationship expert Siggy Flicker.

More: Teresa Giudice's RHONJ homecoming is far from sunshine and rainbows

Viewers only got a quick glimpse of Siggy in the Season 7 premiere, but she was a little more front and center during Episode 3. In a season that is all about Teresa and her return home after serving almost 12 months in prison, it's nice to have a breath of fresh air, which is definitely Siggy. So far, she is drama-free, positive and overall hilarious.

I mean, you know she's a much-needed addition when you forget about Teresa's story line because you're just that captivated by Siggy's shining light. Plus, when Siggy busts out a fan (not an electric one) to cool herself off during a hot flash, you know Bravo picked the right woman to join the hit series.

Oh, and let's not forget about that moment when Siggy pulled slippers out of her purse to ease the pain from her high heels. She is living life the right way.

More: Teresa Giudice’s RHONJ return will make you feel things — trust us

Seriously, what have I done to deserve such a treasure? She is becoming my favorite Real Housewives star, and that's only after three episodes. Yes, Siggy is that fantastic. I have no doubt that she will keep being all-around amazing and continue to hold a place in my heart.

Here's hoping she continues down the beautiful road that is Siggy because I need more. It's nice when any of the Real Housewives series takes a break from the negativity and drama for a little fun.

Siggy is exactly what RHONJ needed, especially to counterbalance the tense situation surrounding Teresa. Siggy couldn't have said it better when she declared that everybody needs a little Siggy in their life. Damn straight we all do.

With that, whoever can create a gif of Siggy fanning herself and wearing her slippers for me stat, I will cherish you forever.

Real Housewives of New Jersey airs Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo.

Calvin Harris just can't seem to stop sending sly digs Taylor Swift's way

In the words of Kendrick Lamar, "You forgive, you forget, but you never let it go." Calvin Harris just can't seem to let his newly found "Bad Blood" with ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift go, as he keeps sending sly digs her way.

More: Taylor Swift responds to Kim Kardashian turning the internet against her

After World War III broke out between Swift, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian last week, when Kardashian posted the video of Swift and West's now infamous phone call discussing his "Famous" lyrics on Snapchat, Harris has decided to take a side. The DJ posted his own video singing along to West and ScHoolboy Q's track "That Part" on Snapchat.

This isn't the first time Harris has used West as a means of sly digging Swift. He was also spotted wearing sneakers from West's Yeezy collection for Adidas right after the first photos of Swift and new boyfriend Tom Hiddleston were released.

More: Taylor Swift's having a tough year — everything that's happened in 2016

Not only did Harris post a shady Snapchat, he was also spotted partying with Kardashian. Harris attended Jennifer Lopez's 47th birthday party in Las Vegas, and was photographed posing with Kardashian, Lopez and French Montana. Montana posted a photo of the fab foursome on Instagram.

More: Yes, Calvin Harris' new song "Ole" is about Taylor Swift — hear me out

Despite Harris buying Swift an olive tree for Christmas, their split has been anything but peaceful. Taking Harris' anti-Swift Twitter rant into consideration, none of Swift's ex-boyfriends have ever dug at her the way Harris has since their breakup.

Why is Harris still so angry at Swift? Is he just that immature, or is there more to this story than we're being told? We'll probably never know for sure.

How to use your Pokémon Go obsession to find love

Finding a date online is like finding a Magmar: You search and search for that elusive character that'll make your game complete, but all you end up finding is a bunch of Pidgeys that aren't that special.

More: You'll score in more ways than one if you have sex before playing sports

The best way to catch the best dates? Find one that caters to your PokéObession. And yes, one exists!

PokéDates is one of the many businesses that have popped up to take advantage of the Pokémon Go phenomenon — and it's pretty brilliant. Created by the brains behind Project Fixup, PokéDates finds you someone to play the game with, and it's more like a matchmaking service.

It's pretty easy, too. First, you have to sign up for a Project Fixup account, then "tell us about yourself and what you seek in a PokéMate. One of our specialists will review your PokéProfile," according to the website.

"Let us know when you’re free and we'll start searching for someone you can explore and battle with," it continues. When you're matched, all you have to do is "show up at the right place and time and you can catch ‘em all together on your PokéDate!"

The first PokéDate is free, and then it's $20 for every date. If the match isn't your type? At the very least, you can get a few tips from another player — and maybe even find a few of the rarer Pokémons. Win-win.

The $100,000 Pyramid just gave a down-on-his-luck contestant new hope

I would be ecstatic if every single contestant on The $100,000 Pyramid went home with a six-figure prize, but unfortunately, big wins can sometimes be far and few between. That being said, the rarity of $100,000 prizes makes it that much sweeter when a celebrity and his or her partner manages to snag big money in the Winner's Circle. And if the contestant is in desperate need of cash? Well, that's the game show jackpot!

More: The best and most questionable $100,000 Pyramid stars yet

Johnny Tammaro
Image: ABC

It's not too often that a game show gets me right in the feels, but The $100,000 Pyramid certainly did tonight, when Johnny Tammaro emerged victorious. Obviously, anybody who competes on the show could use those six figures, but Tammaro needed the money more than most. During the show's introductory segment, he said that he had previously had an awesome job at a toy store in Times Square, but when the store closed, he became unemployed. He didn't make a huge deal of it, even admitting that he's really enjoyed having more time to spend with his son, but it was obvious that he could really use that $100,000.

More: Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg are too chill for $100,000 Pyramid

A quick win would have been very satisfying, but instead, Tammaro went the delayed gratification route. He did well in both rounds but did not win big until paired with Fresh Off the Boat's Randall Park, and then he won with time to spare! The look on his face was one of pure delight — talk about a gratifying moment!

Johnny Tammaro
Image: ABC

So, now that he's a big winner, host Michael Strahan asked, how is Tammaro going to put his windfall to use? He said that he would probably use his winnings to put a down payment on a house and to buy his wife, son and mom a few special gifts.

More: The world still loves Robin Roberts after her epic $100,000 Pyramid fail

I am always pleased when somebody wins big on The $100,000 Pyramid, but tonight, that was an understatement. I am so happy for Johnny Tammaro and his family. I am also happy that the show's revival isn't turning out to be as celebrity-focused as I initially feared it might be. Strahan and the celebrity guests may add a little flavor to The $100,000 Pyramid, but ultimately, victories like Tammaro's are what the show is all about.

What did you think of Johnny Tammaro's big win on The $100,000 Pyramid? Comment and share your opinion below.

Jon Gosselin's upset someone spilled the beans about his T.G.I. Friday's job

Don't expect to find Jon Gosselin working at a local T.G.I. Friday's anytime soon. Just two days after news broke that Gosselin was working as a cook at a T.G.I. Friday's in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he said he's quitting.

More: Jon Gosselin works at T.G.I. Friday's for... fun?

As soon as word got out that Gosselin was working at the restaurant, many were quick to assume that the former reality star needed the money to support his family. However, Gosselin says he just took the job to help out a friend and actually donated the money he made to charity, according to E! News.

While Gosselin said he loved the job, he quit for good after a co-worker sold a photo of him at work.

"I'm not going to work there anymore because now the trust and the teamwork is gone," Jon told Dallas radio station 103.7 KVIL FM. "Because now someone took a picture of me and sold it to TMZ. Thanks a lot, man! Now I gotta go through all of this stuff and now I gotta leave a job that I was passionate about."

More: Jon Gosselin may not be the kind of parent you think he is

Gosselin also revealed that he "really didn't make a lot of money" at T.G.I. Friday's. He said the job gave him something to do when he didn't have his kids or a DJ gig.

"I just went in and did my cooking," he said. "I loved going to work, because when I don't have my kids, I don't really do anything other than DJ and work."

More: Jon Gosselin reveals horrible fallout with his family since divorce (VIDEO)

Page Six spoke to the restaurant's general manager, Scott Trompeter, who revealed, "He works here because he likes to cook. He cooks during the day for me and sometimes here and there. He’s done a great job the last couple of months. He's part of my Friday's family."

Trompeter also said that Gosselin donates the money from his paycheck every week.
